Club changes name and accepts women WHEN Probus was originally formed in England in 1966, the clubs were designed as a haven for Rotarians who had retired from the professional and business world. Only the fourth club to be chartered on the Mornington Peninsula, the Rosebud Probus Club was formed in 1984 and still has some of its foundation members among its members. As the formation of the ladies clubs began to increase, the members of the club voted to add the word “Men’s” to the name. Like all Probus Clubs, it grew to around 100 members and then a slow decline in membership started as medical problems began to affect the members. On numerous occasions, attempts were made to remove the word “Men’s” from the name. They all failed as it was necessary to have 75 per cent of the members vote in favour at a time when the club was lucky to have 70 per cent of its members fit enough to attend meetings. In 2017 the club was informed that it was against Victorian law to have a gender specific title. It is also against the law for anyone to be refused membership of any organisation on the basis of gender. Nigel Edwards, JP, a long-time member of the club investigated and found that in accordance with the Equal Opportunity Act Section 64 “that membership must be

At Patchewollock.

The group pictured at the silo art in Rosebery.

At Rapanyup.

Silo brilliance in the Mallee THREE clubs - The Combined Probus Club of Maroondah, Croydon Park Probus Club and the Croydon Ladies Club - enjoyed a trip on the Silo Art Trail. The Silo Art Trail is Australia’s largest outdoor gallery, stretching over200 kilometres, linking Brim, Lascelles, Patchewollock, Rosebery, Rupanyup and Sheep Hills. It provides an insight into the Wimmera Mallee area - recognising and celebrating the region’s people, through a series of large scale mural portraits painted on grain silos. A team of renowned artists visited the region, getting to know the locals and transform each grain silo into an art form telling unique stories about the host town and its area. On the way to the Silo Art Trail, members visited St Anne’s Winery at Myrniong for some wine sampling, before visiting the first silo at Rupanyup (artist Julia

Volchkova) completed in 2017. Then visiting Sheep Hills (artist Matt Adnate) completed in 2016 and lastly Brim, completed in early 2016 ( artist Guido van Helten). The silo at Brim shone a spotlight on the Wimmera Mallee region and inspired the establishment of the Silo Art Trail. It is over 30 metres high. After an overnight stay in Horsham, the group visited Rosebery (completed in late 2017 by Kaffeine), Patchewollock (completed in late 2016 by Fintan Magee on a 35 metre tall silo). The last silo visited was at Lascelles, completed mid-2017, where artist Rone depicted a local farming couple, whose family has lived and farmed in the area for four generations. Leaving Swan Hill, on the final day, members headed into Boort to visit Simply Green Tomatoes, sampling foods made from green tomatoes. The group then travelled to John Piccoli’s amazing Star

At Sheep Hills.

The Spanner Man near Boort.

Spanner Sculpture Garden, near Barraport, where there are many life sized and larger than life size sculptures all made from spanners - including a shearer, a Mallee bull and a pair of fighting stallions. For lunch members enjoyed a feast at the Logan Pub in the Scrub - situated by

crossroads in the bush! Population in the area is about 15. This trip was such good fun, thanks must go to the convenor, and Riverina Bus Lines, who organised it and to the members from the three clubs who participated and had such a good time.

Learning about the outback A group of 67 enthusiastic Bunyip Garfield Probus Club members and friends headed for Deniliquin for a caravan and cabin holiday to the Big 4 Holiday Park. Happy hour of cause was the first gathering to collect the itinerary for the organised activities for the week before going off to dinner at the local golf club. Tuesday morning members awoke to the park owners cooking bacon and eggs for breakfast, then it was off to the 'Old Police Residence' and Peppin Heritage Centre, which also doubles as the information centre. Originally this building was a school, but it was renamed after the Peppin family to honour the influence it had on founding of the Australian Merino industry. A permanent exhibition called Squatters, Surveyors and Selectors, which covers the history of stations along the Edwards River, was also included. A happy hour on the banks of the Edward River topped the day off, before dining at the Sportsman's Arms Hotel and returning to a warm campfire and music at the park. Wednesday the group boarded a bus to hear a local historian talk of the area on the way to visiting a rice farmer named Rob. He explained what was involved in growing rice and the need to be diverse in farming these days. Lunch was enjoyed at the Long Table Cafe, a unique on-farm dining experience. Stephens Weir was the destination on Thursday for a spot of fishing. A reasonable sized carp was caught by one of the ladies, much to the disgust of some of the men folk.

PROBIANS warm to

FELLOWSHIP The President Joan Vogels

Returning to town, many discovered the bakery and other cafes and took the opportunity to visit the beautiful Civic Park. It was an early rise on Friday to travel to Hay along the Cobb Highway to Shear Outback, to witness a shearing demonstration and hear about the important role sheep had in our outback history. The Australian Shearers Hall of Fame is an innovative monument to our legendary and best loved characters in shearing over the years. The Hay Gaol was an interesting place and others also visited Bishops Lodge Homestead.

Hello Probians, Despite the cold weather, Probians are out and about having a great time. There have been special anniversaries, not only enjoyable but which need congratulations for keeping their club’s pulse racing. Christmas in July has become very popular and so many venues are catering for this. Certainly the best time of year to feast on all that type of food! Friendship Days are amongst the most enjoyable events. With our secretary Rodney doing all the preparations, all we have to do is turn up and enjoy. The Golf Tournament will be held in October, details are in the Probian. The Probian is a great means of communication. Please read the adverts as these businesses are supporting us and we should be returning the favour. Send any club contributions to probian@starnewsgroup.com.au Yours in Probus Friendship Joan Vogels OAM

The weekend came at a slower pace to take in the laste sight-seeing places in Deniliquin. Members challenged themselves to lawn games along the riverfront at the park, with plenty of competitiveness on display. A barbecue dinner presented an opportunity for the meat tray winners to share their spoils. The farewell dinner was enjoyed at the Coach House Hotel and, with an outback theme, many dressed for the occasion. The usual fun awards delivered plenty of laughter. Thanks were given to those who organised the fabulous week.

Remo’s last hurrah OCEAN Grove woke to grey fog furring the boundary lines between the magnificent ocean and the houses of the township, but this didn’t deter the enthusiasm of the 35 caravaners and cabiners as they set off for the Cobram RACV Resort. It was the end of April and this was the last trip organised by Remo Bianco, a founding member of the Ocean Grove Surfside Probus Club. As usual this affable octogenarian had spruiked up the destination so all who booked a site or a cabin were assured of a great time. Remo still retains that twinkle in his eye and a readiness to engage you in conversation, a legacy of a seasoned raconteur and something that would have stood him in great stead in his professional life as a bank manager. Within the club, we all know of course that Remo wouldn’t have been so well prepared or organised without the help of his dear wife, Naomi. Together they would travel Victoria and pre-visit the caravan parks, or resorts as they have now become. To be considered, the parks had to have enough cabins (important because cabiners always seemed to outnumber the caravaners two to one), dog friendly caravan sites, a recreation room and tennis court, good eating places and coffee shops nearby, local shopping opportunities and a golf course in the vicinity. The 9.15 morning briefing has been the only mandatory activity and this, Remo explained, was so everyone would be party to what was planned for the day. There are many happy memories of great dining, farm and winery visits, bike rides, boat trips, lots of walks and of course great fellowship

In fact more than half the club have participated in at least one caravan trip, a reflection of just how popular they have been. Remo’s last hurrah, the trip to the Cobram RACV Resort, by all accounts did deliver on his promise of a great time. However those Probians present couldn’t let 16 years of organisation pass unacknowledged. Remo and Naomi were thanked and presented with a miniature of a car towing a caravan. The Sherlock Holmes cast.

Far from elementery THE Combined Probus Club of Knox celebrated its 20th anniversary with a special lunch at the Stamford Hotel, Rowville on Tuesday 5 June 2018, which was attended by 78 members and guests. To help the club celebrate were Foundation President Wally Fordham and ex-Knox Rotary Club President Peter Headlam, who together were instrumental in the club’s formation in June 1998. Life Members Anne and Laurie Patterson, Maureen and Graeme McEwin

and Doug Whan, who made a special trip from the Bellarine Peninsula, were also in attendance. Following lunch, the committee provided entertainment in the form of a nautical themed Sherlock Holmes murder mystery sketch titled ’The Melodramatic Murder Mystery of the Murdered Master Mariner at Midnight on a Misty Monday in Mid-Atlantic with a Mayan Machete’. After much hilarity and mis-pronounced words the culprit was apprehended and

safely locked up for the remainder of the voyage. While there may have been no Oscar winning performances, the audience showed their appreciation with a generous ovation at the conclusion. Following the sketch Wally and Peter were invited to cut the cake which was quickly demolished by the members. It must soon be time to start planning for the 25th anniversary.

Wally Fordham and Peter Headlam cut the anniversary cake.

Celebration of mothers THE Probus Club of Kingsbury celebrated Mother's Day at its meeting on 7 May, with the clubrooms decorated in pink. The morning tea table was laden with cakes of all shapes and sizes and all had pink icing. The members were asked to wear a touch of pink and all did - including the men. The guest speaker shared some interesting facts about women's football and even sceptics were won over by the talk. An enjoyable evening was had by all and congratulations went out to all the mothers in the world.

It was particularly gratifying that nine foundation members, many past presidents and other committee members, who had served the club over the past 25 years, were able to attend. A very special event took place at the meeting when the daughter and son-in-law of one of the inaugural members, Barbara Campbell, were inducted into the club at this meeting. To have two generations as members is a unique occurrence for the club. Two of the foundation members, Barbara Jenkins and Ian Shand, spent many hours writing a history of the club and a copy was given to each member at the end of the

The support from her office in printing the monthly newsletter and now this history is very much appreciated. Mont Albert Probus Club has always had an active membership and for many years a waiting list for new members. The success is mainly due to the wide range of activities offered each month, the willingness of members to be active in the organisation and the spirit of friendship. Members spent a very pleasant few hours reminiscing, enjoying the food and wine with a little fun thrown into the mix. Driver safety in focus ROAD safety is a very relevant subject to all of us and particularly to elderly drivers.

radar available so always ensure you drive within the posted speed limits.

At the Inverloch Probus Club’s June general meeting the guest speaker subject was Elderly Road Safety presented by Bass Coast Shire Road Safety Program Coordinator, John Ernst.

Chait Takkallapally of Inverloch Pharmacy talked on the Power of Medication.

John introduced three specialists in the field of Road Safety; Sergeant Peter Pierce of the Wonthaggi Highway Patrol Group, Chait Takkallapally of Inverloch Pharmacy and Chet Cline, a long time truckie from Air CTIO. John first pointed out that we all should be aware that driver quality generally starts deteriorating after the age of 55 and injuries in older people are much more serious and longer lasting than younger drivers/passengers.

freeways now and ever increasing traffic, merging into freeways correctly and safely is vitally important.

John emphasised that it is very important to plan your trips in advance and where possible to avoid peak times. Most people would have forgotten 40 per cent of the road rules and there are always new rules to be aware of. You may think that you are a competent driver but it is important to get feedback from friend and family and to take advice when appropriate.

Ensure that you are up to the traffic speed before merging and that indicators are on. When preparing to exit a freeway, get into the correct lane well in advance and be aware of the exit speed requirements. To increase road safety, barriers are continually being erected to stop motorists hitting immovable objects (trees/posts) and more roundabouts are being erected at dangerous intersections.

Sergeant Peter Pierce, Sergeant in Charge of Wonthaggi Highway Patrol Group, talked of the many dangers that are on our roads and emphasised that with so many

Chait advised that the side effects of many medications can make you drowsy and it is important to talk to your pharmacist/doctor about them particularly when starting new medications. Side effects are usually more prominent when first used and the timing of side effects can stay in the system for different times. Strong cough mixtures can also cause drowsiness. If you are feeling drowsy, don’t drive. Drowsiness can sneak up on you so always be aware of the medication you take. If taking several medications always check with your pharmacist/doctor to ensure there is no conflict that could cause driver drowsiness. Chet Cline has been a long time truck driver and has seen it all. He emphasised that trucks take longer to slow or to stop suddenly and longer to get back up to speed. They are also much less manoeuvrable and drivers should be aware of this particularly at speed on freeways. Chet said to keep in mind that these trucks are usually delivering items for your wellbeing so please be courteous to them.

Sharpening up the skills Members at the Old Castlemaine Jail.

Club honours Barbara AT the Maryborough Ladies Probus 2018 annual meeting, current secretary Barbara Betts was presented with her life membership badge by president Jill Morse. Serving more than 17 years in the club she has occupied the position of president, secretary on two separate occasions and several other positions on the committee. Barbara is a highly respected member with all her years of service and very deserving of the award. The club enjoyed a day out sight-seeing around the Goldfields area.

First up was a trip to Mount Tarrengower to enjoy the view, a stopover at the Maldon gardens for morning tea and then a tour and lunch at the Old Castlemaine Jail. It was then off to the Grand Bazar situated at the old Castlemaine Mill to check out the second hand wares. Before returning home members visited the Skydancer nursery near Harcourt enjoying a lovely afternoon tea and a few were unable to resist purchasing some plants and goodies.

Barbara Betts is presented with her life membership badge by president Jill Morse.

MITCHAM Nunawading Probus Club has started a photography club, which has grown from an original four members to nine members over the past 12 months. It started in 2017 because a number of members agreed that, while they did not want to necessarily become professional photographers, they all wanted to take better photos of the grandkids, and they also wanted to make better use of their cameras while on holiday. Convenor of the group, Michael Ransom, said: “It doesn’t matter whether you have an expensive SLR camera or you prefer to use your smart phone, learning to take better photos is fun, and we all learn new skills together.” The club has a group photography outing every second month, and meets in a local hall every alternate month, where they have developed a standard critique form to look objectively at the photos they took the previous month. 12372387-EPJ09-18

Discussion over dining THE Dine and Discussion Group of Heathmont Ladies Probus enjoyed a scrumptious lunch at Tokars Restaurant in Healesville. It was a wonderful way, in beautiful surroundings to end the year. The D&D group meets each month, for two of those meetings in someone’s home. They discuss current topics as decided by the hostess. All members have the opportunity to express their views. The third meeting is dining. The group looks for a restaurant, bistro or tea-room within the proximity of Heathmont. This is a happy group of Probians who enjoy Fellowship, Friendship and definitely Fun. Thanks to Anne Greenwood who organizes the group so capably.

Puffing Billy delight ON 30 April ladies and men from the Heathmont Probus clubs enjoyed a train ride on Puffing Billy. The old train left from Belgrave Station and travelled to Lakeside as members enjoyed a delightful meal. The journey through the Dandenong Ranges is spectacular. Volunteers, in appropriate uniform, are in charge of the train and station. As the driver sounded

the whistle, large puffs of smoke wafted through the trees (taking many back to the days of steam trains.) At Lakeside the group walked along the station platform, where the path led to the lake. Returning to the train, they were served Devonshire tea while travelling back to Belgrave. It was a wonderful Probus outing.

Ringwood clocks up 11 ON a chilly May day Ringwood Clocktower Probus Club celebrated its 11th birthday at York On Lilydale in Kilysth. The event was well attended by 100 people including members, visitors and guests who enjoyed the fun and friendship. On arrival at the venue members and guests were able to view a magnificent display of photographs taken and presented by the club’s Digital Photography Group and some historical photos from the club’s archives. Club President Yvonne Davies welcomed the members and guests and presented nine of the club’s past presidents led in by piper John Wicks.

The organising committee had excelled at their tasks including visiting many local traders to obtaining a large selection of gifts and vouchers which were won by members. Following a most enjoyable meal the past presidents gathered for the cutting of the birthday cake made by member Victor Jeynes and decorated by Anne Oughtibridge. Heidelberg celebrates 35 years HEIDELBERG Men’s Probus Club celebrated its 35th anniversary on Tuesday 8 May 2018 with a luncheon held at St Georges Anglican Church Hall, East Ivanhoe. Club president Geoffrey Pearce welcomed 58 members and guests. Club historian Graeme Ratten spoke of the foundation of the club under the auspices of the Heidelberg Rotary Club, of the club members and guest speakers who have entertained and educated members and of the external activities undertaken during the 35 years. A document listing the speakers and club activities during the last five years was provided to members, this being the second addendum to the previously published book An Historical Salute - the Probus Club of Heidelberg - 25 years 1983 -2008, which presents the history of the club and its activities in detail. Guest speaker, Banyule City councillor Peter Castaldo, spoke briefly of the history

of the council and of the way it endeavours to meet the needs of the community. A musical interlude provided by singers Beverley Ratten and Nicola Ramsay accompanied by pianist Val Eagling was appreciated by all present.

MP honours top volunteer LOUISE Staley MP, Member for Ripon presented the 2017 Ripon Volunteer award to Pat Nolan at the Probus meeting on Tuesday 12 June at the Town Hall. He was nominated by the Combined Probus Club of Clunes. Late last year, the office of Louise Staley called for nominations from organisations and clubs for a member who had demonstrated the following criteria: “The Award recognises the selfless contributions volunteers make behind the scenes; have helped shape the organisation for the better over the years who often go unrecognised and in many instances play an integral role in (the) organisation”. The committee of the Probus Club had no hesitation in putting Pat Nolan forward for this award. Pat has given freely his time and efforts in the running of our club since first joining. He’s always the first to arrive, ensuring that everything is set up for our meeting and clearing things away afterwards including sweeping out the supper room. He’s always to be found helping in the kitchen with morning teas, looking after our sound system and heating and has taken it upon himself to organise the pickup and return of the keys to the Town Hall before and after each meeting. He does all this quietly in the background with no thought of reward or thanks. It’s just his way of contributing to the club. He took on these tasks voluntarily and the club now rely on his

President Leigh Condon and Roma Mawby cutting the birthday cake at Fawkner Merlynston Probus Club. contributions every month. It has not gone un-noticed however and the members of the Clunes Probus Club are delighted that Pat has been acknowledged in this way. Pat demonstrates the Probus values of “Friendship, Fellowship and Fun” admirably.

THE Probus club of Bentleigh East is a dynamic and forward-looking club for retired and semi-retired men and women of all ages. It provides regular activities for the active and not so active. The club regularly has one day outings to gardens, museums and other places of interest and also provides multiple day trips, usually within Victoria, for the benefit of our members. Other regular activities include scrabble, canasta, coffee and chat and dine out as well as theatre groups and morning melodies. The club has a hard-working committee and many coordinators to assist with these activities. It recently conducted a survey of members to determine if they were satisfied with the current running of the club or if they wanted to see some new initiatives or changes to existing ones. Overall, there was a high degree of satisfaction with the club. Some of the results of this survey pointed to support for a new activity - walking groups and the

committee is currently arranging for this to be included. There was also an indication that some members wanted to participate more in regular monthly meetings. The committee is looking at ways of achieving this without getting members out of their comfort zone. Our regular meetings consist of brief reports from our many coordinators followed by a morning tea break where members can get together for friendship and fellowship. The club then usually has a guest speaker that cover topics such as health issues, food bank, past celebrities and technology. New members are always welcome at monthly meetings. These meetings are held at the Bentleigh Club, 33 Yawla St Bentleigh at 9.45am on the second Tuesday of each month (except January). Please call our membership officer, Sue on 0429 508 881 or just come along to our next meeting, obligation free, and see if it’s the type of organisation that you’d like to be part of.

Terrific tour of Tasmania ESSENDON Central Probus Club organised a trip to Tasmania, in conjunction with Spirit Travel and Tours, from 24-30 May. Forty-seven Probus members were picked up at their homes and transported to board the Spirit of Tasmania. The excellent organisation by secretary Margaret Egan and tour host, Tony Balcombe, ensured a no fuss boarding onto the Spirit. Members were allocated their cabins and enjoyed familiarising themselves on board with meal and entertainment options. As the ship left Port Phillip Bay through the Heads, some were brave enough to venture onto the deck. It was very cold and windy, just a little rough but one did need to hold on tight! The bunks were quite comfortable and we were all up and ready to disembark very early. The bus driver for the next five days, Teddy was waiting for us in a brand new, comfortable bus. Tony and Teddy organised the luggage and off we went. Our first stop was at the Elizabethtown Bakery. At 7.30am, the place was rocking and that was before the Essendon Central Probus Club invaded. A huge breakfast was provided. Our tour hosts took us to some sensational places such as “Yarns” at Deloraine, Woolmers Estate at Longford and the Tasmania Gourmet Sauce Company at Evandale. Late afternoon we booked in at our outstanding accommodation for the next four nights at the Launceston Country Club Villas.

Cataract Gorge.

The club secretary Margaret Egan runs into My Kitchen Rules' heart throb, Henry the truffle farmer at Salamanca Market. The following days of touring was most enjoyable - including a day trip to Hobart for the Salamanca Market. This was a highlight with our secretary being photographed with “My Kitchen Rules” heart throb, Henry the truffle farmer.

Tours along both sides of the Tamar River, the Beaconsfield Mine tour, Ashgrove Cheese and Cataract Gorge, plus on our final day, a visit to Cradle Mountain all added up to a most successful trip. The weather was fine and sunny but for

Cradle Mountain whereby it was wet and cold. The overnight Tuesday trip back across Bass Strait was a little rocky for a short time, but we arrived back in Port Melbourne all very pleased with an excellent six night trip of fun, fellowship and friendship.

Striking gold in Walhalla

Due to popular demand Thursday 29th November

OUR SPECIAL CHRISTMAS SENIORS DAY SHOW

12394259-CB32-18

ON a fine autumn day in May, more than half of the 90 members strong East Malvern Combined Probus Club departed at 8am for a day-trip to the old gold mining town of Walhalla. The 56-seater coach was generously provided by the East Malvern Branch of the Bendigo Community Bank. A couple of members provided the morning tea in Yarragon before driving on to Thomson Station. The trip organiser and vice-president, John McBeth, had arranged for us to travel by the little, narrow-gauge train through the narrow Stringer’s Gorge to Walhalla, about a 20minute ride. This train is operated by a group of volunteers, normally only on weekends, so this was a real bonus as was the great lunch; the group booked out the entire hotel dining room! After lunch they all did some sightseeing around this small, historic town, before returning to Melbourne by 5pm. A great trip was enjoyed by all.

Fawkner toasts birthday and service

President Leigh Condon and Roma Mawby cutting the birthday cake at Fawkner Merlynston Probus Club.

FAWKNER Merlynston Probus Club certainly enjoyed its 16th birthday in style, starting with a yummy birthday cake baked by Roma Mawby for morning tea. This was followed by an hour of jokes, a singalong, hand clapping and toe tapping music played by the Huffers and Puffers Musicians Retirement Band. It was great to enjoy music from bygone eras as well as more modern tunes. Celebrations were then topped off with a delicious Pancakes on the Run luncheon enjoyed by club members. Science trip fun and educational TWENTY-FOUR members of the East Malvern Combined Probus Club enjoyed an outing to Scienceworks, where they mingled with busloads of school children and participated in the interactive displays that tested the fitness and strength of their bodies. A highlight was the guided tour of the pump station that provided sanitation in Melbourne from the 1920s - a magnificent building for such a dirty job. The group then had a leisurely lunch at a local hotel. It was a most enjoyable outing, both fun and educational.

Belgrave does Bright “LET’S go and see the autumn colours,” started the planning of a four day trip to Bright in May for 15 members of Belgrave Probus Club. The colours were at their best and the weather was perfect so everyone returned home feeling that they had a wonderful few days away. Most stayed at the Riverbank Park Motel with rooms overlooking the Ovens River while a small group stayed at a nearby caravan park. Activities included a visit to Nightingale Orchard, Wandiligong, Mount Buffalo, Ovens River canyon walk and, of course, around Bright.

The members did manage to fit in a happy hour (or two!) to ensure hydration was taken care of and this was outdoors in the sun and by the barbecue. Planning is now underway for our next few days away for later in the year. The club moved to a new meeting premises three months ago. It now meets at the Upwey Tecoma Community Recreation and Sporting Hub (UTCRASH), Chosen Avenue Upwey on the second Thursday of each month at 10am. Prospective members are welcome to join in.

Busy time for Knoxfield Ladies Ten members of the Knoxfield Ladies Probus Club, along with members of four other Probus clubs, enjoyed a lovely holiday in Bright recently, staying at the Bright Chalet with its warm beds and delicious food. The group was certainly well looked after. It was three days of bus trips to visit local endeavours such as the Pumpkin Seed Farm, the Stag Deer and Emu Farm, Alpine Apples, an Olive Grove, the Beechworth Honey Shop and a local winery, along with lunches and walks around Harrietville, Wandiligong, Beechworth, Myrtleford and of course Bright. The trees were exhibiting their finest colours during a week of cold mornings and nights, yet days of clear blue skies. Everyone was refreshed after staying in this beautiful area of Victoria. It was also fun to get to know and share those activities with the other Probus club members.

The group also enjoyed a beautiful student prepared and presented lunch at Zest Restaurant situated in the Holmesglen TAFE in Waverley Road, Glen Waverley. Definitely to be repeated. “Beautiful - the Carole King Musical” was attended by a large group of members who had a lovely time at the theatre. Five members modelled Black Pepper outfits to the rest of the members recently. They all paraded in a truly professional manner, showing off the wellmade clothing, tempting us all to consider buying the attractive outfits. Club members have also visited Cranbourne Botanic Gardens, had lunch at Wings and Fins, then inspected the Fisherman’s Cottage and Museum Complex at Tooradin. The club is looking forward to Harness Racing at Melton, a Mystery Tour, and Mornington Market with a ride on the Arthur’s Seat Eagle.

Ursula, Gwen, Jennifer, Rose, Elisabeth, Val, Denise, Elizabeth, Bev and Brenda at the Bright Chalet.

Members enjoyed a very interesting talk about the MCG and the various events and people associated with the famous Melbourne icon by Roger an MCC member, and now look forward to meeting Rosemary, a super Mum, to hear about her busy and fascinating life, as well as Karen who will advise about on-line safety and avoiding scams. It has been a busy and most enjoyable time.

Help for arthritis sufferers THE Bidet Shop customer Mabel suffers with arthritis and a painful back condition but has found a bidet has made the everyday task a much simpler. “It’s marvelous! I’ve always wanted a ‘paperless’ bidet in my bathroom and I wish I found it years ago!” Mabel said. ”The bidet simply replaced the existing toilet seat and automatically cleaned without toilet paper. The friendly staff explained that the bidet toilet seat has many health benefits as well as the comfort factors of a

heated seat and other features” she said. The bidet can be used in two simple steps. Press the bottom/feminine wash button and the bidet provides a stream of warm water to clean thoroughly. Then with just the push of another button, warm air gently dries without the need for toilet paper. Mabel said that although The Bidet Shop offered to send out a brochure pack, she decided to order a bidet straight away. Well it arrived a few days later. She installed the

seat herself easily and as she had been told, it fitted perfectly on her original toilet bowl. “It is the best investment I have made in my personal health and hygiene in years and no longer finds going to the toilet an issue”. “Give it a go!” She says. “I did and I couldn’t be happier”. For more information or to purchase call The Bidet Shop on 03 9081 0789. Vic Probian readers may qualify to have their Bidet fully funded. Please call us to ask how.

Oh what a day it was! WHERE to start when reflecting on the Geelong Central Probus Club’s 25th anniversary celebration? There were so many highlights. The venue at Truffleduck was excellent, with fine food, delightful entertainment and an atmosphere that was relaxed and friendly. The faultless planning by the anniversary committee was evident in each and every detail throughout the proceedings. Upon arrival, members enjoyed a pre-lunch drink while perusing an extensive collection of historical albums, newsletters and photographs from the club’s earliest days. David Barton’s display of photographs of previous outings and activities brought

responses like: “Oh look, remember that, - what a great time we had that day!” It was certainly a ‘trip down memory lane’ for many of us. There was also warm praise for our club historians, who have diligently archived these records since the club’s inception in 1993. The main program, opened by president Colin Chinn, with Eric Thompson as MC, acknowledged our foundation members, welcomed special guests, and thanked the generous sponsors for their contribution to the celebration. Guests and speakers included Probus Association of Victoria president Joan Vogels OAM, City of Greater Geelong mayor Bruce Harwood, president of Rotary Club of

Balmoral: The appeal of apartment living THE Australian dream is to own your own home. But as we reach our formidable years, that family home can sometimes become a burden - increased maintenance, high utilities costs and the like. And lots of unused space as kids move out. The options are many at that stage soldier on at home, downsize, rent, make a sea change or move to a retirement village. When choosing a village, the living options within the village can vary - eg. villas, units and apartments. Retirement living apartments can be a fantastic option. Balmoral Village, nestled in a private landscaped estate in Wantirna South, offers a range of living options (214 homes in all). Many residents, both new and from within the village, have chosen apartment living. With 17 independent apartments designed around a beautiful central courtyard garden, they can be an easy, low maintenance, convenient and affordable way of joining the Balmoral community and experiencing all the benefits of a thriving village. Margaret, the village’s newest apartment resident, was immediately attracted by the ambience and feel of the place. “After looking at other apartments, as soon as I walked into Balmoral, I said ‘I can live here’. My apartment has everything I need. I even have a beautiful garden area around my balcony. I’ve planted all my own plants and feel right at home”. And it’s not just new residents making the move. Barbara has lived in a larger two bedroom villa with garage at Balmoral since 1998. After 19 years, as circumstances changed (including the passing of her husband Ian), apartment living gained appeal. She made the transfer in 2017 and hasn’t looked back. “I walked into the spacious living area and was instantly taken by the stunning views, out over my balcony, to the Dandenong Ranges. It’s just beautiful. And the layout is fantastic, with all new interiors; and my ensuite is huge! I wish I’d made the move earlier.” At Balmoral, the village takes care to fully refurbish each apartment before a resident moves in, so it’s like a new home. The thought of downsizing to an apartment can be daunting for some. Not for Barbara. “It’s allowed me to declutter my life.

Barbara has lived in a two bedroom villa at Balmoral since 1998.

Many people say ‘I have so many things’ as a reason not to move. For me, it’s allowed me to pass on some family heirlooms to my kids, and see them enjoy them and appreciate them in their lives now. And because my apartment is quite spacious, I’ve been able to bring my favourite things.” This includes a stunning, polished wooden dining table and chairs that takes pride of place in her living area. Margaret agrees. “You can’t be a hoarder! I actually loved getting some new furniture and setting the place up just how I wanted it.” Adjoining the community centre, the apartments are a convenient gateway to everything on offer at Balmoral. As Barbara observes, “I’m only a short stroll to the hairdresser. I like to drop in every few weeks. The podiatrist and doctor are just

across the way. In winter, I can walk to the indoor pool for my weekly swim without going outdoors! And I can catch up with friends on the way back in the lounge and share a tea in front of the fire. For meals, I’m not a big cook, although my apartment kitchen is lovely, so I regularly dine in the Balmoral restaurant. I love a good roast. It couldn’t be more convenient”. The community centre is the ‘social hub’ of the village. As an active member of Wheeler’s Hill Probus, Barbara knows a thing or two about activities and functions. “There’s so much to do here. Whether its movie nights, line dancing, mini-market day, indoor bowls, choir group or trivia, the choice is endless. And for apartment residents, we organise a special monthly dinner just to catch up.” At the same time, the apartment complex itself is private and peaceful. So if you just want to relax in the comfort of your own home, that’s easy too. Margaret enjoys the serenity. “Living close to others [apartment living] was a new experience for me. I didn’t know what to expect. But my apartment just feels so private and homely. I have fantastic neighbours and everyone is very respectful”. “It’s the best of both worlds!” says Barbara. Security is also an important factor to many. And apartment living provides that peace of mind. “I feel very safe and secure in my place. It gives me great comfort. Also, when I go on holiday, I just let the girls in the office know, lock the door and off I go!”. As Margaret, Barbara and many other happy residents have done, it could be time for you to consider apartment living at Balmoral now. Balmoral Village is at Ridge Road, Wantirna South. Getting the most out of life BARBARA Byford knows that if she needs support at home, help is just a phone call away. Barbara lives in a Uniting AgeWell independent living unit, and the organisation has been supporting her with a home care package for more than five years. During that time, Barbara has received wide-ranging assistance, from meal delivery and domestic assistance to medical aids and equipment, and technology. “I started with just a little bit of help and it’s gradually increased,” she says. “I’ve had quite a few health issues recently. If I need something for my health benefit and my wellbeing I only have to ask and they are always obliging.” Barbara is an avid cook, but accessing her cooking utensils was a challenge until Uniting AgeWell stepped in. “I asked if it was possible to extend the kitchen bench and install a set of drawers so I could safely and easily access my baking things,” she says. A few weeks later, after an Occupational Therapy assessment, Barbara’s new kitchen drawers were installed. The not-for- profit organisation has also helped her with a new smart tablet and training, a supportive mattress and pillow, lift-up recliner chair and blood pressure machine. Barbara says the Uniting AgeWell team always goes above and beyond to make her life easier. The team even advises her on how she can use unallocated funds to get the most out of her package. Community Programs Coordinator Ing Tjahjano says Uniting AgeWell provides

tailored care to help older people keep doing what’s important to them at every stage of the ageing journey. This includes flexible home care packages, social support programs, allied health and therapy services, carer respite, independent living and more intensive care and support with residential aged care. “Because Uniting AgeWell offers the full continuum of care, people can choose the service that’s right for them, at the right time,” Ing says. “We have many people who began receiving services at home, then moved into one of our independent living units. When the time came, the transition to one of our residential homes was easy. They already had a relationship with the staff and trusted the organisation. “Our clients are at the heart of everything we do and we want to ensure everyone can live well with choice and peace of mind.” Uniting AgeWell understands how hard it can be to navigate the complicated aged care system and can help people through that process. Staff can step seniors through the Federal Government’s My Aged Care referral portal, explain the different government-funded aged care programs available and the programs and services offered by Uniting AgeWell. If you have received a letter from My Aged Care about a home care package, Uniting AgeWell can help you activate the services you want. For more information on how Uniting AgeWell can support you to live and age well, or for advice on the aged care system, call 1300 783 435.

Exhibition lights up Ballarat THE Art Gallery of Ballarat’s will follow its recent successful Eugene von Guérard exhibition with a stunning international exhibition, touring exclusively to Ballarat from the regional art museum in Douai in the Flanders region of northern France, the Musee de la Chartreuse. Titled Into Light, the exhibition tells the story of French painting in the nineteenth from the Classical to Post Impressionism through a selection 60 works from Douai museum’s collection. Exhibition curator Julie McLaren the Douai collection provides the perfect backdrop to highlight the breadth of the Ballarat gallery’s extraordinary collection of works by European and Australian artists. “Prominent among the works on display will be a rarely seen treasure of the Ballarat collection, Paul Signac’s 1923 watercolour, Fishing Boats at Lomalo,” McLaren said. The visiting international works will be complemented by a selection of key works from Australian collection by European and Australian artists such as E Phillips Fox, Ethel Carrick Fox, David Davies and Hilda Rix Nicholas from the National Gallery of Victoria, the Art Gallery of New South Wales and Bendigo Art Gallery. “As the title suggests, light is the central theme of our exhibition. Capturing light on canvas has entranced, eluded and obsessed countless artists, most famously perhaps by the Impressionists who sought to document the fleeting and transient effect of sunlight through short brushstrokes of pure colour,” McLaren said. Into Light shows how the impact of these changes was felt as far afield as

Eugène Isabey, Contrebandiers embarquant des marchandises, 1837.

Alfred Sisley, Meule sur les bords du Loing, 1890. Australia, where artists started imitating their French counterparts and took to painting En Plein Air. In the mid-nineteenth century, France was the acknowledged centre of the art world, as realist styles of painting were challenged by Impressionism. With the advent of photography many artists worked to imitate nature, finding new ways to celebrate light and colour as spontaneous ‘impressions’.

“The nineteenth-century wealth which the coal industry brought to Douai enabled the Musee de la Chartreuse to build an impressive collection, including French paintings from the eighteenth through to the twentieth century. For both Douai and Ballarat, nineteenth-century industry brought wealth, and investment in cultural institutions, so the collections are worth comparing,” McLaren added.

Paul Signac, Fishing boats, Lomalo, 1923. The exhibition will be accompanied by special guided tours at noon every Saturday, Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday during the run of the exhibition from 23 June to 9 September at the Art Gallery of Ballarat, 40 Lydiard Street North. Impressed by all that jazz OVER 100 music lovers and friends joined the Probus Club of White Hills for an afternoon of jazz featuring the ‘Hot B Hines’ jazz band at the Huntly Memorial Hall on 22 April. Band members David Hines, Ken Collins, Barry Curry, Wally Joosens, John Huf and Herb Matthews played a variety of instruments including banjo, guitar, trumpet, trombone, sousaphone, bass guitar, saxophone and drums. Their vocal prowess too was first class. It wasn’t too long before the audience became enthralled in the music with some singing along, tapping their toes or dancing. A delicious country style afternoon tea was served and a wonderful concert

was enjoyed by all. Many thanks to all who contributed to the day by setting up the hall, advertising, selling tickets or catering... it was a great team effort.

Probus club links run deep GREENWAYS Village has taken pride of place in the heart of bayside Seaford since its humble beginnings in 1976. As a pioneer of the industry, close to 500 happy residents have called Greenways ‘home’ over the years. With such a rich history, it’s not surprising that the Probus connections run deep here - both past and present. Just ask Village Manager, Lesley Hemingway. “Of our last seven residents moving to the village, five belong to Probus. They now have the best of both worlds!” It’s hard to know whether it’s the welcoming community, vibrant environment, great friendships, many activities on offer or the caring and supportive reputation of Greenways that attracts these new residents. For many, they’ve had the chance to experience village life before making the big decision. This is so important. “We’ve hosted joint functions with Probus at the village. Our Melbourne Cup Day event in September was a fantastic example. Residents and guests loved dressing up for the occasion, meeting new friends, and sharing a champagne (or three!), as the community centre was transformed for the Spring Racing Carnival.” Next on the event calendar - friends of Probus residents are invited to an upcoming Opera Extravaganza to be held at the village during Frankston Seniors Week at 2pm on Wednesday, 17 October. The village welcomes back John Carlo Bellotti, opera singer extraordinaire and Probus friends are welcome for an afternoon of songs, scones and cheerful company. And the connection works both ways. It is common to see Probus excursions and events advertised on the Greenways notice board for residents. Whether it be a trip to Lakes Entrance or a Mystery Tour (to Mount Macedon) residents are encouraged to participate. But it’s not only the active lifestyle that is a drawcard of Greenways. Speaking with Marilyn (secretary of Carrum Downs Probus and of the Greenways Residents Committee), she recalls what influenced her decision to move to the village in December 2016. “I was dropping a Probus newsletter to the villa of a friend at the village. As soon as I walked into her home, I just thought ‘this is perfect’ and I knew Greenways was for me.” She chose a beautiful two bedroom unit near the community centre with views of a neighbouring park. There are a range of options from one to three bedroom villas

and single bedroom apartments. At Greenways, the village takes care to fully refurbish each unit before a new resident moves in, so it’s like a new home. “What is so striking is how nice the interiors are. All new finishes, a modern kitchen, spacious bathroom, and open living areas - very impressive - and there are no worries about ongoing maintenance. After seeing this, I was then invited to come along to Greenways 40th anniversary celebration and was made to feel so welcome. It made my decision even easier.” Audrey (Seaford Combined Probus member and Greenways resident since March 2017) sees the personal touch and care of the Greenways staff team as something that sets the village apart. “I’m in the unique position of having lived in another village. Although I knew a lot of people at the village, I was a bit hesitant before the move. But Lesley and the girls made things so easy. I instantly felt at home and could see that the village was in good hands, with residents best interests at heart.” Barbara (Greenways resident and eightyear member of McCrae Ladies Probus Group) agrees. “We are just so lucky to have the care and support of Lesley, Sandra and Lee.” Financial security can also be an important factor. Greenways has been privately owned for four decades with a dedicated (and distinguished) board of directors actively involved. They are regularly investing in improvements and additions at the village for the benefit of residents. The village fortnightly maintenance charge remains very competitive and residents get a raft of services and benefits in return. And, at Greenways, residents can strike a nice balance between life at the village and life outside the village. You only need to look at Patricia (Greenways resident since January 2014) who is treasurer of the resident’s committee but also maintains strong Probus links, being treasurer of Victorian Probus and an active member of Langwarrin Ladies Probus Club! So, as Greenways celebrates the many connections with Probus past and present, it hopes that those connections continue and thrive into the future. Greenways Village is at 330 FrankstonDandenong Road, Seaford. Phone 03 9786 8679. Drop past anytime.

A Walk of Honour ON 11 November 2018 the nation will come together to commemorate the centenary of the end of World War I; dubbed “The Great War” or the “War to end all Wars”. On this special day, the community of Aintree in Melbourne’s outer western suburbs will bear witness to the official opening to one of Australia’s newest physical tributes to military sacrifice through the ages, with the official unveiling of the 500 meter-long Aintree Walk of Honour. Conceived and constructed by the Woodlea residential project which encompasses much of Aintree, the development of the Walk of Honour reflects a true community effort, including local history groups and schools. The principal military reference point for the walk has been the RSL and in particular, the Caroline Springs sub-branch. The Woodlea development off Leakes Road will eventually be home to around 20,000 people and is a joint venture of Victoria Investments and Properties and Mirvac. The developer’s significant investment in the Walk of Honour reflects a commitment to true, inclusive community development and the creation of a meaningful legacy for residents and the City of Melton. The philosophy behind the Walk is to not only honour the local fallen in a timehonoured manner but also to re-package tales of sacrifice, hardship and the ugly realities of war. The use of smart technology will enable visitors to become immersed in behind the scenes, web-based interpretation and perspectives through their personal smartphones.

My Word Laurie Barber

The Walk also aspires to promote a contemporary understanding of the stories of war in faraway lands that has led to the intake of refugee populations to Australia; people who now live as a part of local western suburbs communities. Caroline Springs RSL will hold their Remembrance Day ceremony on Sunday 11 November 2018 at 10.30am to coincide with the official opening of the Aintree Walk of Honour. In the lead-up to the event, the Woodlea project will host a series of “Remembrance Week” events. Caroline Springs RSL is currently immersed in researching the stories and people that will form part of the Walk of Honour. A key part of that research is a “shout -out” to communities for information about military servicemen and women with a local connection (ideally within a 20 km radius of Rockbank, Melton or Caroline Springs and especially those who did not return from their field of battle) with a view to selecting people and

family stories for incorporation within the Walk. The key research focus has now turned to the Korean War of the 1950s, through the Vietnam War of the late ‘60s and early ‘70s and right up to and including missions where Australian troops are still engaged. Furthermore, contributions from more recently arrived citizens with stories of their war experience in their country of origin are sought. This project has a lofty ambition to construct a commemorative symbol like no other, which engages across the generations and recognizes the global influences that shape our society. Caroline Springs RSL welcomes your contribution to the legacy that this project will leave, by sharing your stories and information about loved ones who have fallen. Please contact the Caroline Springs RSL on 9307 8072 or email admin@ carolinespringsrsl.com.au

An engaged pet is a happy pet Vets&Pets Dr Tristian Rich MOST pet owners do a great job of looking after their pets physical needs keeping them warm or cool, feeding them well and making sure they get plenty of exercise. But did you know you also need to look after your pet’s mental health? We call it enrichment - making sure your pet has a mentally stimulating environment in which to play, explore and learn. It helps them stay happy, and it can also help prevent them looking for their own fun by digging holes, shredding curtains or knocking over knick-knacks. All animals need enrichment, and there are many different ways to provide it. Here are some ideas to get you started. Your local vet can also offer some great ideas tailored to your specific pet’s needs.

Lort Smith’s Pet Legacy Program can provide you with peace of mind knowing that, should the need arise, Lort Smith will find your pet/s a loving home and provide for all their medical needs for the rest of their days.

DOGS Dogs are social animals that enjoy spending time with humans and other dogs. Always make time in your day to hang out with your canine friend, even just allowing them to sleep near you while you watch TV is a rewarding social interaction for your dog. If they have a doggy friend, let them get together a few times a week for a play session - or take them to a designated offleash area to help them meet a new friend. Most dogs are food motivated and enjoy food balls with hidden snacks they have to work to find. If your dog is really switched on and likes to work for their food you can try a puzzle game where they need to move things around with their nose or paw to get the treat. CATS There is often a misconception that cats are aloof and independent and just need to

30 The Victorian Probian Monday, 6 August, 2018

The threat of spiflication

be left alone. But while they can be more standoffish than a typical dog, cats still need mental stimulation and interaction. Cats of all ages especially love chasing things, so and old fashioned piece of string, or laser pointer, can offer a simple way for you to engage with them in a fun and stimulating way. There are now a range of puzzles and activities available which are specifically designed for entertaining cats. They often involve pushing a ball around a designated path, or other similar activity. The advantage of this type of cat toy is your cat will enjoy playing even when you are out of the house. If you have more space, you can get a cat-sized “hamster wheel” for them to exercise on, or large towers for them to climb and explore. RABBITS, guinea pigs and ferrets So called “pocket pets” often get left alone in a hutch out in the back yard, but rabbits and guinea pigs certainly benefit from social interaction and regular play. Some even enjoy a cuddle and tickle, but others won’t enjoy being touched. A good approach can be to offer feed pellets in treat balls and puzzles, similar to cats and dogs. This extra challenge helps keep them entertained while they eat, rather than just having easy access to a bowl of food. You can now get quality toys designed for smaller pets which are made out of safe chewable materials from most good pet shops. If you have a pet ferret, they really like running through long tubes and tunnels. So a visit to your local hardware store for industrial tubing can offer them plenty of entertainment. * Dr Tristan Rich is Unusual Pets and Wildlife Veterinarian at Lort Smith.

WHEN you were a child, did the grown-ups ever threaten to spiflicate you for some minor misdemeanour? Did you hide in fear of the punishment about to be meted out, or did you have a bit of a giggle and continue with your merry transgression? By coincidence, I heard the word used in my household recently as grandchildren sliding down the stairs ignored the threats that they were in danger of being spiflicated. Recollections of my childhood brought back memories of hearing adults say something like “I’ll spiflicate you if you keep doing that”. Of course, those of my generation knew that the threat was an idle one. But the threat of spiflication wasn’t always an idle one, and still isn’t if some dictionaries are to be believed. My Macquarie says it means ”to destroy utterly, hurt, punish or damage, destroy or kill”. An 1841 dictionary said that to spiflicate something was to do “some bodily injury”. Robert Louis Stevenson and Lloyd Osbourne had no doubt about the meaning of the word when they used it in Ebb Tide in 1894. But I’m not so sure about Charles Dickens. I think Dickens misheard the word somewhere and decided to use it in his novel Nicholas Nickleby. But Dickens didn’t use the word spiflicate. In 1839 he came up with something similar, smifligate. This confounded quite a few people, and conjecture expressed at the time was that smifligate and bloodshed must be one and the same thing. In 1839 Dickens wrote Nicholas Nickleby and he recorded: “Mr Pyke treatened with many oaths to smifligate A very old man” I understand, although I couldn’t confirm this, that an 1840 report of the Campaign of the Indus said some of the enemy were “cut down by the dragoons or spifflicated (with an extra l) by the lancers”. Where did the word spiflicate come from? Nobody seems to know, but a suggestion is that it was made up from the words stifle and castigation. My big dictionary says “humorous or colloquial”. The Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue had its own interpretation of spiflicate in 1785. Captain Grose, the author, said that to spiflicate was to confound, silence or dumbfound. In time, that became the accepted meaning, although the Americans decided that a person who was spiflicated was drunk. In 1927 the New Republic published a list of American words to mean drunkenness. The list included spifflicated (with an extra l). Four years later the Baltimore Sun bemoaned the fact that somebody else had provided a detailed list of words for drunkenness “except the excellent name of spifflicated”. My big dictionary says spifligate means to deal with in such a way as to confound or overcome completely, to treat or handle roughly or completely, to crush or destroy, or drunk. There is a word splification, which means “complete destruction”. But I remember splification. These days, when parents threaten to spiflicate little children, they aren’t suggesting the children be reduced to an alcoholic stupor, or even that some form of capital punishment is on the cards. If there is such a punishment as death by tickling, then the use of the word spiflicate would probably be close to the mark.
