Century’s tribute By Casey Neill
Mount Evelyn RSL's Bill Smart and Roger Boness hold a service for Frederick Jeeves. cross above my head than be one of those who could have gone and did not". Frederick's medical records show he was 167 centimetres tall and had blue eyes and brown hair. After training at Royal Park he was allotted to the 14th reinforcements for the 22nd Battalion. He left Australia from Station Pier, Port Melbourne, aboard the HMAT Themistocles on 28 July 1916. He joined the 22nd on the front line trenches on the Somme as the 1916-'17 winter started. Frederick was wounded in the chest in January 1917 when a bomb from a rifle grenade exploded.
He spent most of 1917 recovering from his wounds in hospital before attending retraining and re-joining his unit in December. In January he transferred to the 6th Field Company Engineers and was part of the force set up to defend Villers Bretonneaux. On 1 August 1918 he was killed in action during an artillery barrage, aged 30. Frederick is buried at the Villers Bretonneaux Military Cemetery in France. His lieutenant later wrote he was "absolutely one of the very best". A newspaper tribute from his wife and daughters read: "The German shrapnel did but kill the body, not thy spirit fine. That liveth still to work its will, within thy country's heart and mind."
A wreath for Frederick Jeeves, 100 years after his death.

It's been 100 years since Frederick William Jeeves died on a battlefield in France. Mount Evelyn RSL president Roger Boness and member Bill Smart honoured the Montrose man with a brief but stirring service at the Montrose War Memorial on the anniversary of his death. It's a ritual the Mount Evelyn and Lilydale RSLs started to mark the Centenary of Anzac, back in 2014. Mr Boness said they'd tried to track down and invite family members to each event, and some travelled from as far afield as Sydney to honour their ancestor's sacrifice. The RSLs will have paid tribute to about 60 soldiers by the time they wrap up in June next year, at war memorials in Montrose, Wandin, Mount Evelyn, Yarra Glen, Silvan and Lilydale. James Wallace and James Payne are up next up, at Wandin at 11am on 26 and 31 August respectively. Mount Evelyn secretary Anthony McAleer said the final service would take place in Mount Evelyn and would honour a submariner. He laid down on top of the submarine when it surfaced but fell asleep, and was killed when it resubmerged. "In 1912 he'd joined the navy - he was one of the first in the area to enlist," Mr McAleer said. Frederick Jeeves' death was far more brutal. He was born in 1886 at Mount Dandenong and walked down the mountain daily to attend Montrose State School. Frederick attended the Working Men's College in Melbourne to learn signwriting and at age 16 took up a contract with the shire to build a road at Kalorama. In his late teens he drove the Mountain Mail and Passenger Coach from Mount Dandenong to Croydon . He learnt all he could about the vehicle's mechanics, decided to become a motor mechanic and opened his own garage in Montrose. Frederick married Violet Vera Cazaly in 1913 and they had two daughters, Linda Maree and Edith Cavell. He enlisted on 1 February 1916 at the Melbourne Town Hall, and later wrote to his wife that "I would rather die with a little wooden

Danny Zemp's take on the Coles plastic bag backflip...followed by another backflip...
It's easy to take for granted our beautiful environment - the unpolluted air, the peace and quiet, and to forget our unfortunate others living an inner city nightmare of continual development, overpopulation, traffic chaos, and unrelenting background noise. How they dream of our 32-hectare park at Olinda (former golf course), a place of quiet and natural beauty. Many already escape to The Dandenongs on weekends. When Melbourne's population reaches an unthinkable 7 million, the pressure will make our park more popular and valued. But Parks Victoria, together with the State Government, have secretly planned a huge development - local people have been unable to get the detail, but Parks Vic have Olinda Golf Course Project on their website, with maps. What's happened to Parks Vic's charter and their commitment to: "Conserving Victoria's Special Places - We will aim to ensure that our valued parks, and the natural assets and cultural heritage they hold, can be enjoyed now and by future generations." Does Parks Victoria's funding now rely on doing the government bidding and entering into secret developments of crown land? Applications (YR-2018/509) and plans for stage one of the project are before the Yarra Ranges Council and a decision to go ahead with removal of the top of the hill and many trees (the habitat of koalas, birds, echidnas etc ... ) is imminent. Call to ban "horrible" poison A couple of days ago a little dog named Hilda suffered a truly horrific death from 1080 poisoning. Her owner, a single lady who has lost most of her possessions to a conman, was absolutely distraught with the loss of her companion. With lambing season fast approaching, farmers have to do what they can to protect their livelihood. In this instance the farmer had done the right thing with signs and personally contacting all neighbours. This poison, however, is indiscriminate and, in this case, probably resulted from a carcass that had been dragged or died on our property and that the dog discovered. I am no friend of the fox or the rabbit and only a week ago lost my complete coup of chooks to a fox. I have spent several years rabbit-proofing my house area as the only workable solution I could come up with to combat the massive damage caused by the rabbit plague. With the constant push for growth comes the desire for quick solutions to problems often without due concern to collateral damage. DDT, Agent Orange and asbestos come to mind as examples of accepted solutions to problems only to be found to have far-reaching, unacceptable consequences. Surely it is time we follow most of the rest of the world and ban 1080 and force the market and governments to come up with a far more acceptable solution to the control of these pests. The repercussion both directly and to friends and family of this one small incident when replicated all over the country surely provides sufficient evidence to ban this horrible substance. Help for homeless People sleeping rough will have better and quicker access to support services thanks to a partnership between Yarra Ranges Council and Anchor. They'll work together on a new rapid response model to help people sleeping rough in the shire. Yarra Ranges Mayor Len Cox said that Anchor housing support workers would be able to accompany council officers to offer support for people experiencing homelessness. "We previously could hand out some information about services, but that left rough sleepers in the place of having to get in touch and organise an appointment," he said. "Thanks to this new partnership, we'll be
able to chat to people with an Anchor worker present, who will be able to offer support and some intensive case management to help get them back on their feet." Cr Cox said Homelessness Week, which runs during the first week of August, was a reminder that anyone in the community could experience homelessness. "The issue of homelessness in the Yarra Ranges may not be completely hidden anymore, but there is still a stigma against people who are experiencing homelessness," he said. "The reality is that homelessness can affect people of all ages, genders, backgrounds and family situations. "People also need to remember that those
who are homeless or sleeping rough are just as entitled to be in public places and participate in public activities and events as anyone else in our community. "We have to all work together and support one another to find the best way to help our community members while also breaking the cycle that can push people out onto the streets." The council's partnership with Anchor will be funded through a four-year Community Partnership Grant, awarded last year. Call Anchor on 9760 6400, email anchor. admin@anchor.org.au, or visit the office at the Box Hill Institute Lakeside Campus, Building LA, Level 2, above the new Lilydale Library.
Mia’s heart for help just keeps on giving By Casey Neill A Montrose 10-year-old is helping to keep the Dandenongs safe from fire. The Basin Primary School student raised $250 for the Upper Ferntree Gully Fire Brigade. "It was for a school project and it's now become a thing," she said. By that, she means she'll now continue her efforts with a trivia night in September or Oc-
tober, with a lofty $1000 goal. "I think it's good and it helps out my community," she said. Mia, softly spoken, chose the brigade because "Mum and Dad have known them form basketball and Dad grew up in the hills". She's also supporting the nearby Willowbrooke Aged Care Home. Upper Ferntree Gully Fire Brigade Captain
Peter Smith welcomed the donation. He said it would go towards upgrading the brigade's two fire trucks. That project will cost about $120,000 "but every bit helps". The brigade is always looking for new recruits, as well as donations. Email psmuddy@gmail.com for more information.
IN BRIEF Mooroolbark death 'not suspicious' Police say a woman's death in Mooroolbark was not suspicious. They attended a Wyuna Walk home on Wednesday 1 August after a woman was found dead about 10.45am. Following the results of a post mortem, the 85-year-old's death has been deemed nonsuspicious. Police will prepare a report for the Coroner.
Call for mum to come forward Police are seeking a mother who was at Lilydale Marketplace with her two young children on Sunday 29 July. Lilydale Sergeant Ryan Wheeler said they're seeking to identify the woman in relation to suspicious behaviour by a man that occurred between 11.50am and noon that day. He said a witness had been in touch with police and an investigation was underway. Sgt Wheeler urged the woman to call Senior Constable Finter at Lilydale Police Station on 9739 2300 to assist with the investigation.
Charges over cafe break-in A teen bogged a stolen car while trying to avoid a booze bus in Montrose, police allege. They arrested the 16-year-old Bayswater boy on Friday 27 July and charged him with motor car theft, burglary and attempted burglary. Yarra Ranges CIU detectives allege he smashed a glass door to a cafe in Wray Crescent, Mount Evelyn, earlier that night and stole a cash register drawer. They said he also smashed a window at a hair salon on Mount Dandenong Tourist Road in Montrose but didn't gain access. He was remanded in custody.
Be aware Police are reminding motorists to be aware of pedestrians after a woman was stuck by a car in Upper Ferntree Gully on Friday 3 August. At 6pm, a vehicle struck her and knocked her to the ground while she crossing Burwood Highway at Dawson Street. The woman was crossing legally on a green pedestrian signal. The 26-year-old woman driving the car immediately stopped and rendered assistance. The collision occurred at low speed and the pedestrian was taken to hospital only as a precaution. She was later released having sustained minor injuries. Police issued the driver with a $282 penalty notice and three demerit points for failing to give way to a pedestrian. Police said there was no suggestion that the collision was intentional but believe it could have been avoided if the driver was taking extra care. “These types of incidents can be distressing for everyone involved: the victim, the driver, witnesses, as well attending emergency services personnel - take care on the roads and look out for pedestrians and other vulnerable road users,” Knox Highway Patrol said.

Lobbying for overtaking Back in 2007 I committed $10 million for overtaking lanes on Wellington Road between Clematis and Lysterfield. Only $2 million was ever spent and, annoyingly, the remainder was diverted by Federal Labor to projects outside the La Trobe electorate. This is a very important road - especially for the residents of Emerald, Gembrook and Cockatoo. And I know that residents of Belgrave South, Narre warren North and Narre Warren use this road. This road is zoned 80 kilometres an hour. A lot of heavy trucks and trailers use it each day. Also, very importantly, a lot of mums and dads and singles use it to travel to work. I have always been greatly concerned about the safety of this road. Residents have again asked me to do something about this road.
From my
desk Jason Wood MP
Federal Member for La Trobe
Annoyingly, to do something about this road is now likely to cost in the vicinity of $230 million. Therefore, I will endeavour to attract federal funding for Wellington Road. Meanwhile, the great news is that after listening to local residents and lobbying both the Prime Minister and the Treasurer, we have been able to secure $500 million of funding for work on the Monash Freeway.
Stage one of the Monash Freeway Upgrade between EastLink and Clyde Road is nearing completion. New lanes were opened in early May and new overhead freeway technology was installed in early June. The transformation of the Monash Freeway has reached another milestone, with expressions of interest now underway to build the $711 million second stage of the project. Stage two of the Monash Freeway Upgrade will add 36 kilometres of new lanes to ease the current gridlock motorists face every day. This is vital infrastructure for La Trobe residents because: The improvements to the Monash Freeway will make everybody's journeys quicker and easier, with an extra lane from Cardinia Road to Warragul Road;
The Minta Farm project will result in local people being able to work locally instead of driving on the Monash into the city; The completion of the new Beaconsfield Interchange will also facilitate the Minta City development; and This is an IT and advanced manufacturing employment precinct, which is destined to bring 10,000 new jobs to our local area. The Australian Government is contributing $500 million to the Monash Freeway Upgrade stage two with the State Government contributing the remainder. Major construction on the project is scheduled to start mid-next year. I hope you are as pleased about these outcomes as I am, and I look forward to delivering yet more wins for La Trobe on your behalf.

IN BRIEF
Oxfam trail change Dandenong Ranges residents love a good charity walk or run and now Trailwalker - one of Australia’s largest fundraising walks - is coming to town. On 1 August, Oxfam Trailwalker announced that for its March 2019 event, the 100km Melbourne trail had changed and would start in the heart of the Dandenong Ranges. The new trail will start at Emerald Lake and make its way over the Dandenong Ranges and through some of Melbourne’s leafy eastern suburbs including Mount Evelyn, Olinda and Lilydale. From there, it will travel down the line all the way to Fairfield. The trail change is the first in almost a decade, with the previous trail starting from Wheelers Hill and ending in Wesburn.
“After almost 10 years on the same trail between Wheelers Hill and Wesburn, Oxfam Trailwalker listened to feedback from some of our most dedicated Trailwalkers and decided it was time to improve and update the trail," Oxfam Trailwalker spokesperson Anna Wemyss said. "We want to give Melbourne something fresh. "The 2019 trail presents an exciting new challenge for our passionate returnees as well as for those considering taking up this fantastic team fundraising challenge - and the opportunity to help Oxfam’s work tackling poverty in communities around the world - for the first time.” Ms Wemyss said the new trail would give participants fantastic views of the city as they climbed over Mount Dandenong.
She added that the new trail could also have beneficial tourism impacts on the towns it passed through. “Trailwalker attracts a lot of people from far and wide, with participants, staff, volunteers and support crews often spending money in nearby towns on food and accommodation,” she said. “Oxfam Trailwalker economic analysis conducted on past events in Australia suggests just one team can bring in about $1200 in local economic benefits, through parks visits and buying goods." Hundreds of teams take part in the event ever year and with a new trail, the 2019 event is expected to be no different. The event will be held over 36 hours from 29 to 30 March and registrations for the event open on 7 August at trailwalker.oxfam.org.au.
Savings for the taking Yarra Ranges Council is inviting businesses and commercial property owners to save money and go green. Under Environmental Upgrade Agreements (EUAs) now available, they can apply to have building upgrades paid for with a long-term competitive loan secured on the property. Upgrades include solar power, energy and water efficiency and other environmental improvements. The owner will then repay the loan through their council rates, where council transfers the repayments to Better Building Finance. Yarra Ranges Mayor Len Cox said allowing building owners and tenants to pay their loans back at a low rate would result in immediate benefits from energy efficiency on their building. "We know that installing upgrades such as solar panels can be tough for small businesses, due to the upfront cost," he said. "Upgrading your building to improve energy, water, environmental efficiency and sustainability isn't just great for the environment, but it saves money in the long run, too. "Through the EUA, business owners will be able to reduce their carbon footprint and save money on bills, while property owners benefit from increased property values and a low interest rate on repayments. "I encourage all of our local businesses to read more about EUAs and to apply to get their project underway." Better Building Finance is powered by the Sustainable Melbourne Fund and is administering the EUA program for 21 councils across the state. "EUAs are saving businesses $2.8m annually," Building Better Finance executive manager Shay Singh said. "Victoria is the fastest growing EUA market in Australia and it is great to have councils like Yarra Ranges joining in to support the local business community." Visit betterbuildingfinance.com.au for more information.

Funding needed for early learning By Derek Schlennstedt Three-year-old kindergartens are under threat of becoming too expensive for parents due to a lack of government funding, say teachers. Currently there is no government funding for pre-school programs for three-year-olds in Victoria and teachers are saying the costs are too restrictive for many families. According to Cockatoo Kindergarten teacher Gill Birkett, the lack of funding is costly for both the parents and the kinder. “We have a four-year-old program of 15
hours per week and a three-year-old program of three hours per week because it’s all we can afford to do when it’s not funded by anybody but the fees that the parents pay,” Ms Birkett said. “It ends up becoming too costly for families, so 75 per cent of kids end up missing out.” In a review commissioned by state and territory governments this year, it was identified that quality early childhood education made a significant contribution to achieving educational excellence in schools.
The Lifting Our Game report found the case for three-year-old kinder “compelling” and that it would “make a real and cost-effective contribution to improving school outcomes in Australia”. La Trobe MP Jason Wood visited the Cockatoo Kindergarten on Tuesday 31 July to speak with Ms Birkett about her concerns. The Federal Government have committed about $870 million for pre-schools in 2018 and 2019, though this does not include three-yearold kinder.

Cockatoo Kindergarten is lobbying the government to fund three-year-old kinder and shared their concerns with La Trobe MP Jason Wood.
Shadow Minister for Roads and Transport David Hodgett and Member for Ferntree Gully Nick Wakeling announced on 31 July that the McMahons Road intersection at Burwood Highway, Ferntree Gully, will benefit from a significant road safety upgrade under an elected Liberal Nationals Government. They said that if elected to government in November, a Matthew Guy led Government will install traffic lights at the dangerous intersection. The announcement comes after local surveys determined that 90 percent of local residents supported the signalisation of the intersection. Mr Wakeling said that the upgrade will reduce the risk for local traffic entering and exiting McMahons Road via Burwood Highway. "Today's commitment to install traffic lights at the McMahons Road intersection in Ferntree Gully will deliver safer roads for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians in our local community," Mr Wakeling said. "I will work closely with the Knox City Council and VicRoads on the design of the intersection upgrades to ensure we get the best outcome for motorists and residents."

NEWS Breast cancer survivors, their families and supporters are urging Australians to Stand With Me at the G on Sunday 12 August as part of Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA) and Melbourne Football Club’s fifth Field of Women. Donna Cleeland-Carney, a breast cancer survivor from Emerald, told the Mail her remarkable story about cancer, caution and closure.
Every scar tells a story DCIS was found and removed, and an MRI concluded its extent. It was not only a shock to me, but the medical specialists were surprised to find that the cancer had been hiding inside my breast ducts. Soon after I underwent a mastectomy with immediate tissue expander and follow-up implant reconstruction. A year later, I was invited to the same fundraiser luncheon I had attended earlier, but this time as a guest speaker to share my own breast cancer story. In a period of 12 months my life had changed significantly, and so as I stood as a speaker in front of the same ladies I had sat with the year before I focused on the positives: on how the fund-raising does make a difference, and how the money raised does filter down to where it is needed most. Most importantly, I encouraged the ladies and anyone out there to trust their own intuition, question until the answers satisfy and never be afraid to source multiple opinions. Looking back, the core of my message is to trust your own instincts; my scars are a reminder of that. The field of Women event will be held on Sunday 12 August before the Melbourne Demons versus Sydney Swans AFL game. For more information, visit bcna.org.au/ fieldofwomen. All the money from each ticket sold goes directly to Breast Cancer Network Australia.

I am a 50-year-old mother of three children. Both my sons were born with a rare congenital heart defect so I am very accustomed and familiar with medical procedures. I am not intimidated or daunted by them, however nothing can prepare you for when you are diagnosed and hear that C-word. In 2016 I attended an annual local breast cancer fund-raiser luncheon and I was inspired and impressed with the organisation, and the generosity and spirit of the local community. At the time there was no knowing what lay ahead for me and in the following year I was diagnosed with ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) - a cancer in the breast ducts. My mother had breast cancer with a lump, though mine was irregular as I had no lump and historically unremarkable scans. While holidaying in Bali, my breast however suddenly looked distorted and became hot and sore. I also noticed other changes. On my return from Bali, I visited my local GP as I thought I might have an infection. After consecutive doctor’s visits and scans, the prognosis remained all clear. My intuition told me something was not right, so I pushed further for answers. I had a spontaneous fluid test which was atypical and I then decided to have surgery and genetic testing. Only then was the true situation revealed. During the procedure, 35 millimetres of

Michael Galea is the Australian Labor Party (ALP) candidate for the electorate and in the November State Election will run against Liberal Gembrook MP Brad Battin, who has held the seat since 2010. Mr Galea moved to the area when he was 10 years old and attended the local primary school. He attended Emerald Secondary College, before going on to study arts at Open Universities. On 1 August, his 26th birthday, Mr Galea took time to chat with the ’Mail’ about politics, his personal life and what drove him to become a candidate at such a young age. “When I was quite young I had the view politicians were all the same, but it was a campaign I ran as a teenager when I was 14 that changed my mind,” he said. “From Gembrook there was a bus to Belgrave but none to Pakenham, so I started a pe-
tition and got the local community involved. "Through that process I met with the then local MP Tammy Lobato and she really helped me get the campaign up and running and ultimately secure the bus from Gembrook to Pakenham. “That showed me that there is a real value in local community politics and its capacity to be able to get things done for the community, which has stuck with me and inspired me ever since.” While one point of difference is his young age, Mr Galea is also openly gay. “I think it is important that we have more young people in our parliament it’s important that we do represent the entire community and is imperative that people judge us not on our age or gender, but on what we can do for the community,” he said. “The main thing I really want to do is be a good local representative for the area. “I really feel that too often the hills communities get left to the end of considerations and coming from Gembrook itself I really want
Labor Candidate for Gembrook Michael Galea to drive to change that and make sure the hills are getting the service they need.” The Gembrook electorate takes in Avonsleigh, Clematis, Beaconsfield and parts of
Berwick, Emerald and Pakenham. At the 2014 state election, Brad Battin received 54.6 per cent of first preference votes, ahead of ALP candidate Ross Collins’ 30.6 per cent.
Outgoing CEO can see some future challenges ahead By Casey Neill
ernised" during his time there. "We've invested heavily in technology and digital initiatives to improve our interaction with our customers," he said. He said the council had also increased its capital works delivery, to a record $72 million this year. "We're more active and we're doing more and delivering more on behalf of the community," he said. Mr Patterson highlighted community hubs and recreation centres - like the Mount Evelyn athletics track - as key projects delivered during his tenure. "There's been a real splurge on that kind of
investment," he said. "We've also quadrupled the amount of footpath investment." He said Yarra Ranges had also improved its planning services under his watch, and increased its tourism pull. The region is now second in the state for visitation, up from fourth place 10 years ago. The new civic office is one of the projects he wished he could have seen through - it was on the radar when he arrived. "It's not been the most popular project," he said. But Mr Patterson said it would make a huge difference for the community and employees.

The outgoing Yarra Ranges Council CEO says housing, roads and drainage will be among the biggest challenges for his replacement. Glenn Patterson announced on Wednesday 25 July that he'd be leaving his job of the past 10 years to take on the same role at the City of Casey. "I still have the energy and the commitment, but 10 years is a decent stint in a role like this," he said. "It's good for me and the organisation to have a change." Mr Patterson said his replacement would implement a change to "activity-based work-
ing" when the council relocated to its new headquarters and that was "a key challenge". "There'll be all sorts of issues in terms of medium-density housing coming into urban area," he said. But there's also opportunity for investment in the Upper Yarra, including through the Mountain Bike Destination project. He said the new CEO would need to continue infrastructure upgrades, including aquatic facilities and pavilions, and deal with unmade roads and drainage solutions. "We're getting more extreme weather events," he said. Mr Patterson said Yarra Ranges had "mod-

Belgrave’s Woorilla winner The PAVE Woorilla Poetry Prize awards ceremony took place in Emerald on Sunday 29 July and, according to organiser Maria Millers, the event reflected its national status. The poetry event attracted more than 300 entries from all over the country, though it was a hills local who took out the open section. Belgrave poet Catherine Bateson won with her poem Green Light. It's a reflection by one woman on another - her mother. “It was really a teenage memory pitting my own memory of my life against what was going on in my mother’s life at the same time,” Ms Bateson said. “We used to live in the country and it was about a decision I made not to elope with a boy, but it also is a poem about my mother. “The event was fantastic; it was just a great

and warm event.” The runner-up for the open section was Brisbane-based writer and poet Mocco Wollert, for Possum Watch. Ms Millers noted that it was "particularly pleasing to see an increase in the number of junior entries". She said that judging by the surnames, many may not have learnt English as a first language. Wade O’Brien from Muirhead, NorthernTerritory, took out the youth award for his poem MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game), a poem that embraces digital gaming culture. On the night of the awards ceremony, eminent poet and judge Judith Rodriguez commented on having to make a difficult decision because of the number of fine poems.
Fun goes on By Derek Schlennstedt Sixty people attended Sherbrooke U3A s first meeting in 2007, and 35 of those applied to become a member. From those small beginnings the group was born and it has grown to more than 170 members. The Mail spoke to Sherbrooke U3A President Judith Patrick about the Sherbrooke University of the 3rd Age and its aim to make sure age remains just a number. It is growing, but all U3As are growing throughout Victoria - it s the fastest growing organisation in the state, she said. U3A provides educational, social and recreational programs and activities which promote life-long learning for members of the
community who are retired or semi-retired. It encourages groups of people in their third age - past retirement - to carry on learning, just because they can. Ms Patrick said there was a plethora of activities on offer from bushwalking to tai chi and that the Sherbrooke U3A was all about having fun. We do partnerships throughout the community with Upwey Tecoma Bowls Club, Ms Patrick said. We try to help out the community as much as we can and have a good time doing it. The fun never ends in U3A. Classes can be downloaded from www. sherbrookeu3a.org.au. To become a member call 9754 3339 or email office@sherbrookeu3a.org.au.
Cardinia Mayor Colin Ross watches a performance during the ceremony.

THREE … steps to keep your campfire safe
1
Use a purpose-built fireplace or light your campfire in a trench at least 30 centimetres deep. Ensure the trench is no larger than one square metre in size and the area around the trench is cleared of flammable material up to three metres in all directions, including above the campfire.
2
Branches and logs on your campfire must be less than one metre long - keep your fire just big enough for warmth and cooking.
3
Never leave a campfire alight or unattended. You must maintain a 50-metre line of sight of the campfire at all times. An adult must be present at all times when the campfire is alight. Ensure your campfire is completely extinguished using water, not soil.

Towards success together "Together" is the most important part of St Paul's Primary School's vision. Principal Michael Watt believes that parents and staff have the same goal - to support the students in becoming independent, resilient, lifelong learners and faith-filled global citizens. "St Paul's has a set of values which guide us," Mr Watt said. "These are the values we stand for at St Paul's: justice, respect, courage, responsibility, wisdom and knowledge. Every day we see our
students, staff and families enact these values, and we are often discussing examples of this with the students. In highlighting these values, we demonstrate the spirit being active in our lives." St Paul's also believes in teamwork and collaboration. "We work together to support student learning and life outcomes for all children. "At St Paul's we believe in consistency of approach. Our classrooms are not exactly the same, but they are consistent in their practice

and therefore we have created a settled learning environment for students. Staff work together on common goals for improvement and we learn with and from one another." Mr Watt explained that staff, students and parents are also involved and engaged in the school and wider community. "Reaching out to all begins with our Parish," he said. "We are linked to the Parish community and we enjoy a great relationship with our sister school - St Thomas More's Belgrave. Reaching out to all is evident through working with the MADCOW community group with Monbulk Care and Mini Vinnies and we continue to be involved in social justice initiatives through our Kitchen Gardens." "Our Parents and Friends are vibrant, strong and active in fundraising and our staff are the most open and welcoming group of teachers anyone could hope to find. Students from Mater Christi College in Belgrave are set to add some colour to the community on 17 August, when they celebrate Mater Day and raise money for communities in need. Bringing a fresh approach to their annual celebration, this student initiative will involve various on-site festivities followed by a Colour Run through Belgrave. About 700 students from the college will don white T-shirts sold especially for the day and walk to local parks where their peers will 'colour-bomb' them. "We are really excited about this year's Mater Day event," college captains Emily and Sophie said. "There will be an inter-house performing arts competition, a lunch-time food market and, of course, the opportunity for everyone to be colourful at the end of the day." Mater Christi College principal Mary FitzGerald said the event was a great opportunity for the college to celebrate the can-do energy of girls and support other communities. "We encourage our students to 'listen with the ear of the heart' and contribute generously to other communities where people experience hardship and/or conflict, she said. "Funds that are raised go directly to enable the activities of the Good Samaritan Sisters for the kindergarten in the Philippines, schools in Kiribati and Timor Leste, women's groups in Santa Teresa and closer to home, to the Good Samaritan Inn in Northcote." The students have planned the day carefully, gaining approval from authorities and ensuring the environmental credentials of the event. Eating habits and decay Eating habits play a major role in tooth decay. Sugars in food and drinks eaten are taken up by bacteria, producing acids that attack the outer layer of tooth enamel to cause decay. Saliva helps teeth recover from these attacks through a process neutralising the acids. However, if people frequently snack between meals, there is no rest period for teeth to undergo this recovery process, which means that over time a cavity forms as a result of these sustained acid attacks. But it isn't just the obvious sweet foods and drinks such as lollies and soft drinks that can cause decay. Frequent snacking on foods with hidden sugars like biscuits, crackers, cereals, chips and even dried fruit (these also break down into sugars in the mouth) can cause acid attacks on tooth enamel. Two teeth friendly habits people can adopt to reduce the risk of tooth decay include having three regular meal times a day, (rather than snacking and grazing) and limiting sugary treats to be part of a meal, rather than as a snack. It's also important to drink it up! It's calorie free, there are no ingredient labels to stress over, and it's almost free! Even better, tap water in most areas of Australia contains fluoride, one of the easiest and most beneficial ways to help prevent tooth decay. Making water the beverage of choice and regularly sipping it throughout the day, including with and right after meals, makes a real difference to the health of teeth. Chewing sugar-free gum (and that's the crucial qualifier, it must be sugar-free!) may not be the first thing that springs to mind when people think about good dietary habits to benefit their teeth. But studies have shown that chewing sugar-free gum for 20 minutes after eating can prompt mouths to produce

ENTERTAINMENT
Small play with big story By Derek Schlennstedt The year is 1833; two hundred young women immigrate to the Australian Colonies from England, but to claim their new life they must first survive the voyage. In the musical production Voyage, The Good Girl Song Project brings this story to life and is featuring the play at the Gem theatre in Emerald. Written by Helen Begley and based on the academic writings of Liz Rushen and others, Voyage speaks to the little-known history of Australian female migration. The script quotes directly from eyewitness accounts while the songs capture the humor and poignancy of everyday life aboard ship. Ms Begley said that the play was a chance to display those lesser known female stories which have faded into Australia's vast history. "I came across this little story in a book and it was just this little entry about a ship load of women who had been paid passage to come to Australia to work," Ms Begley said. "The first scene was of them being greeted in Sydney by 2000 men jeering at them." "It's a little known part of our history and a chance to show the female stories which are often a quieter story." Playing upon the historical importance of female migration stories, the cast are also inviting local people to a workshop beforehand to devise a new scene for the performance. Residents of Emerald are invited to bring along stories of female immigration from their personal and community history. These stories will be worked into a new scene which will be performed that night star-

lies and the wider community," Ms Begley said. The workshop will take place at the Gemco Theatre on 18 August at 3pm, with the perfor-
mance taking place a few hours later at 7pm. Tickets are available at www.trybooking. com.
Chew on this By Derek Schlennstedt Monbulk College is preparing for its production which has been described by students as a 'zombie romance'. The production is a classic girl-loves-ghoul rock and roll broadway musical set in the atomic 1950s at Enrico Fermi High, where the zany and tyrannical Principal Delilah Strict rules the roost. Pretty senior student Toffee has fallen for the class bad boy Jonny "No H" Warner, though family pressure forces her to end their romance resulting in Jonny charging off on his motorcycle towards a nuclear waste dump. He returns, glowing, dead and determined to reclaim Toffee's heart. Sarah Clark, a production assistant and Monbulk College graduate from 2010, spoke to the 'Mail' about this year's production which is called 'Zombie Prom'. "It's a black comedy about a boy and girl
This year's Monbulk College production is a romance but not as you know it. who meet and fall in love at high school, but it's a classic he's a bad boy, she's a good girl and there's pressure from her parents to break-up with him," she said."The boy in question then jumps into a nuclear reactor ... it gets quite bleak, but it brings the laughs and is quite funny." The show will play at the Monbulk College Theatre from 9 - 11 August. To book tickets go to trybooking.com.
It’s Clover-feeble this time By Seth Lukas Hynes The Cloverfield Paradox Starring Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Daniel Bruhl and Elizabeth Debicki Rated M The Cloverfield Paradox is what happens when sloppy execution clogs up a solid foundation. In a future beset by severe energy shortages, the crew of the Cloverfield space station find themselves marooned in another universe after testing their state-of-the-art Shepard particle accelerator. The Cloverfield Paradox has solid performances and arresting imagery within a contrived, undisciplined plot, jarring editing and gravely mismatched tones. Despite being grossly underwritten, the characters are still enlivened by the actors' charisma, and Gugu Mbatha-Raw, as communications officer Ava Hamilton, delivers a sombre, powerful central performance. The mailcommunity.com.au
film moves at a swift pace, but spends little time dwelling on each shocking detail, which dilutes the tension of the astronauts' ordeal. A tense thriller about astronauts being adrift in another dimension would have been enough, but The Cloverfield Paradox veers into pointless body horror at several points. The horror moments are visceral and confronting on their own, but make absolutely no sense within the film's own poorly-defined rules. The film also has an extraneous sub-plot involving Ava's husband (Roger Davies) on Earth, which serves only to flimsily connect this film with the original 2008 Cloverfield film. Well-acted and entertaining in chunks, The Cloverfield Paradox is a disjointed, poorlywritten whole. The Cloverfield Paradox is available for streaming on Netflix.

SPORT
Comp tightens at the top By Cameron Hutchison This week brought everything back to a level playing field. Division one has four sides sitting in equal top position (Olinda, Upwey, Woori Yallock & Wandin) with a total of 24.03 per cent separating them. The remaining four rounds are now vitally important. You would think the spot for fifth is only between Healesville, Mount Evelyn and Monbulk. Division two has Seville one game clear on top, Yarra Glen three games clear in second, Yarra Junction are safe in third. The battle is between Gembrook, Alexandra and Yea for fourth and fifth with three rounds to go. Division 1 Seniors Football (Round 14) Wandin 22.11.143 d Belgrave 13.8.86 Wandin got off to a blinder, kicking 8.1 to 1.1 in the first. SPORT
Weekend cross country By Jamie Strudley Several of the tougher members of Yarra Ranges Athletics made the long drive up to Ballarat for a race around Lake ‘Windoree’ - Wendouree - on Saturday 4 August. They were greeted with cloudy skies, strong icy wind and an understanding of why we only had a small team for this meet! The juniors had to complete one lap of the lake (6 kilometres). Harry Norman kicked Yarra Ranges Athletics off to a great start with second overall and Madeline Laven proved that broken bones couldn’t stop her, with a close-fought second place in the girls under-14. Next up was the open men and women who had to complete two full laps plus an out and back.
This meant three times running into a headwind that felt more like a brick wall. Seamus Dwyer lead Yarra Ranges Athletics home with a strong performance despite initial worries that he might not make it to the start, as his little pink watch couldn’t pick up satellites. Next in was Michael Clarke, who rose to the tough conditions and stormed through the field after lap one. Lauren Starr was first lady, despite sufferring with a stomach ache - next time she should follow coach’s advice and find a tree a puke behind it. James Anderson completed his first long run since the Gold Coast marathon and ran a controlled effort. Andy Searles made the wise call to pull out at 7km with a sore foot, although there are sus-
picions as this happened to be at the time his girlfriend passed him. Graham Coutts put in a strong effort despite a dodgy knee and the ever-consistent Bryan Ackerly was right behind him. Georgia Brock had a fantastic run, completing her longest road race in well under goal time and beating coach in the process. Jamie Strudley dodged a bullet and made it in under 70 minutes, confirming that he wouldn’t be hanging up the racing flats any day soon. Craig Hewitson rounded out the men’s team in stirling fashion, continuing his triumphant return to racing. Laura DiGregorio had a sensational run and Katie Clarke was just behind. A little more sun and less wind would be nice for next round at Anglesea in two weeks.
The rest of the Yarra Ranges athletes headed to Cockatoo to compete for the annual Hills Challenge trophy. The prestigious silverware has been with the club for the past four years. The weather had been kind to the venue so, by and large, the course was steady under foot. The late night rain did make some parts slippery. The event includes five races, from 500 metres to 3km, and each runner can run as many races as they want to help accrue points for their club along the way. Yarra Ranges had at least 50 runners, but many of its older and more experienced runners were away on other events and the club finished second to Pakenham. The club welcomes all athletes of any age or ability. Visit yarrarangesathletics.org.au.
Monbulk Junior Footy The Hawks are still in the hunt for the finals, with three teams working towards what will be hard-fought games this coming Sunday. The Monny Hawks under-14 boys, under-14 girls and under-16 boys are working towards a flag. UNDER-11S Woori Yallock 6.9.45 d Monbulk 2.1.13 The side played another strong game. It was pushed around in places but contested with effort and scored a couple of goals. Best: Rylan Kay, Jack Cotter, Alex Moore-Dennis, Monty Pithouse. UNDER-12S Wesburn 4.2.26 d Monbulk 2.0.12 The boys played well in the first quarter and kicked the first two goals. It was a hard slog from there and the opposition’s better players were just too good on the day. Best: Abel Teese, Todd Mackay, Jacob Defina, Ford ThomasTatti.
UNDER-14 BLUE Monbulk 7.8.50 d Olinda 1.2.8 The first final saw us up against an opponent that pushed us all the way in our last encounter. A complete focus on the first quarter was our aim and that certainly set up the rest of the game. Best: Nick Taylor, Logan Bright, Coby Passingham, Ben Smith, Riley Finlay, Mac Rouget. UNDER-14 GIRLS Worowa 8.19.58 d Monbulk 3.2.20 The side had one final home and away game before their finals series. The girls were lucky to have enough numbers to fill a side due to injuries. Worowa was very clean with its skills and fast on the field, which meant Monbulk played chase for most of the game. Hopefully most of the girls will be back to play in the side’s first final next weekend. Best: Charlie Bakker, Hannah Koolstra, Lexi Ratcliffe, Rihanna Kelly. UNDER-16 Monbulk 10.10.70 d Olinda 6.5.41
The Monbulk under-16s in action. Picture: ERIKA BEDYN Olinda was tough at stoppages and it forced the Hawks to lift their work rate. The side tried to stick to its team structures and the wind made that tough, but worked hard to the last siren. UNDER-18 GIRLS Blackburn 7.4.46 d Monbulk 2.6.18
This was the side’s first ever final and despite the final result the girls played their hearts out and had a really good crack at it. A fantastic last quarter was a great way to end the season and the improvement from each girl was outstanding. Best: Steph, Bec O, Indy B, Shayla F.
