THE LATEST IN FOOD
Most people in Noosa live in households of only a few people or even one resident. With each household having to meet the costs of living including food, power, transport and education, expenses are high and each household is burdened with the workload involved in maintaining their lives. For thousands of years humans lived communally, sharing costs, shelter, food, cooking and child rearing. For most of human history people were hunter gatherers living in tribal groups. A conference held in Noosa on Saturday raised questions about housing models, lifestyles and community connectivity. The interest in the community was shown by the hundreds of people who attended.Tiny houses, share houses, communal living are being seen as alternatives to homeownership in a market increasingly out

THIS WEEK WE’RE TALKING ABOUT…
NEW CALL FOR DYING WITH DIGNITY BY MARGARET MACCOLL Two women, Fiona Jacobs of Sunrise Beach and Tania Battel of Brisbane, are leading a call to the Queensland Government to begin an inquiry into legislation on voluntary assisted dying with a petition that requires an extra 8000 signatures to make 10,000 by 20 August in order to be received by the Health Minister. Fiona is a registered nurse with 35 years experience and Tania who was first diagnosed with breast cancer 20 years ago is now terminally ill with the cancer having spread to her bone and and liver. "I've seen a lot of people die," Fiona said. "The trigger was my mother dying last year. It was not a happy end. The sooner we get this legislation, the sooner we let people have better deaths if they choose it." The voluntary assisted dying advocate and Dying with Dignity Queensland member said the organisation were
becoming frustrated with the lack of progress on the government's part. "Queensland is the only state not to have considered this important issue," she said. Proposed new laws failed to pass narrowly in both NSW (November 2017) and South Australia (November 2016). The Northern Territory passed laws effective from 1996 that were later nullified by the fed-eral government using its overriding powers over territories. Victoria passed VAD laws last year after a parliamentary inquiry. Western Australia has a parliamentary inquiry underway that started in August 2017. Fiona said several surveys showed about 80 per cent of Queenslanders showed support for greater choices when it came to managing their end of life choices including palliative care and voluntary assisted dying. She believes Queensland needs a Parliamentary inquiry to start a conversation on the topic, hear expert
Fiona Jacobs. evidence and personal experiences and learn from legislation elsewhere. Fiona said interstate inquiries have taken up to 12 months. People like Tania have no time to delay. Fiona and Tania launched their
NOOSA SNAPSHOT OF HOW WE LIVE NOW Across Noosa Shire more people own their own homes, fewer are unemployed and more volunteer than on average across Queensland. A report providing a snapshot of 2016 census results combined with more recent statistics to provide an updated Community Profile was presented to council meetings this week. The report which updated a report prepared under Council contract by the Australian Electoral Commission in 2014 showed most people in Noosa lived in the hinterland (23,000) and the least from Peregian to Marcus Beach (3,875). It shows about 25 per cent of people are aged from 0-24 years and 30 per cent are 65 years or older. Couples with no children living at home make up 49 per cent of households, couples with children make up 34.5 per cent of households and 15.4 per cent are one parent families. The 2016 census results indicated there were 24,815 private dwellings in Noosa Shire, of which 4,671 were unoccupied on census night. Almost 80 per cent of occupied private dwellings were separate houses. In Noosa Shire 39 per cent of occupied private dwellings were fully owned. This is higher than the figure of 28.5 per cent for

COVER STORY
THIS SONGBIRD KNOWS All things are from another era for these two - even their childhood romance which is in its 35th year.
HOW TO FLY BY HOLLIE HARRIS ust when you think Noosa folks play it safe, in rolls a pink haired song-bird with the all the colours of the rainbow tattooed across her body on a pair of candy-pink skates. It's not a derby starlet, but local entrepreneur and performer Tanya Stevens and she is one hot mumma! This self-confessed rockabilly chick loves to make people smile. Her passion for all things fifties and sixties is drenched in every aspect of her life and her theatrical style is her trademark. "I most definitely get judged but I think it's mostly in a good way. I just think people are intrigued by the look, but are afraid to try something different for themselves," says Tanya. "That's why we love festivals because we don't get stared at, we get admired." The "we" would include her equally stylish rockabilly love, John. Still head over
J
heels for each other after 35 years, these two really are meant to be. Going out on their first date at 16, Tanya and John still date like teenagers today, and in style. Cruising down the highway in "Val," a 1967 VC Valiant Regal, with quiffed hair and Johnny Cash kicking over on the wireless, the pair make their way down to Greazefest in Brisbane to join their tribe. A weekend of cool cars, rockabilly bands, fashion parades, pinups, vintage bikes, lowrider cycles, custom art shows, pinstripers and tattoos, the Tewantin couple are heading 'home.' "We had always dream that of getting a classic car for a long time. I just love the shapes they are all so different and sexy," she says. "Val is just like the one my dad drove when I was growing up and I now I can drive her every day." The classic car came into their life after they endured a major setback with Johns health.
"John had a doctor's appointment for something completely unrelated and had full check-up while he was there. "Two days after we got a phone call saying that something unusual had showed up in a routine blood test. With just a simple blood test, John had been diagnosed with aggressive prostate cancer. Through surgery and a lot of help from family and friends and early detection, John has made a full recovery. The ordeal thrust Tanya into making her dreams a reality. They had always wanted a car to represent their love for vintage. "We just decided let's do it. You never know what's around the corner." They later added to their classic car collection with a very cool, rat rod style 1974 Ford pickup, which is parked outside their fifties inspired Tewantin house. Her love for rockabilly is threaded throughout her home; her walls, her
furniture, her instruments, her style, all look as if it they been painted with a vintage brush. Walking through Tanya's front door is like stepping into a time warp and arriving at the coolest little joint in town, with original furniture and treasures straight out of the sixties everywhere you look. More like a museum, everything is authentic and complete with all the little imperfections, bumps and scratches they have accumulated over the years. A record collection waits its turn on the vintage turntable and out the back. A genuine Tiki bar complete with a backyard tropical island lovingly created by the couple makes their pad the place to party - and soak in the oldworldly surroundings. "I have a love, as does my husband, of the fashion from that era as well, of course I add my own little twist. You could say we are the modern version of the sixties," Tanya says.

"I guess for me it was the fashion. The dresses were beautiful the hairstyles were immaculate, the guys were cool and the cars were sexy. Times just seemed so much fun and carefree. "I have always had a love affair of everything from the fifties and sixties but became a lot stronger around 5 years ago, when we found out about John. "I am happy to say my husband is a survivor and he also shares in my passion of the rockabilly lifestyle we now live and breathe." Tanya wears many vintage hats. Her other passion is performing on stage and she prides herself on the fact that she not only performs, but entertains and shares the experience with her audience. She truly is a 'Rockabilly Baby' that will just stand and deliver a song in her bold and sultry tone. Tanya has grown up on stage since she was 10 years old, winning many awards as a young upcoming artist and appearing in
talent shows on TV. "My roots in music started out with country. Performing at Tamworth and the Queensland Country Music Awards, I grew up singing at gigs alongside Keith Urban, Country Boys, Bobby Ricks, to name a few." She studied at the Young Musicians Academy in Ipswich for a few years and learned guitar, so at the age of 15, she became the lead singer of a rock band which went on to be huge throughout the pub and club scene. These days, you can still hear Tanya's gutsy tunes belting out of several local pubs where she has a gift for getting a crowd up dancing and breaking out in song. With her love for all things retro, Tanya herself is a vintage vision, seeming as though she has stepped straight from a 1950s pinup. A talented hairdresser for the last 18 years, she has recently opened her own boutique sixties salon, Liplocks Beauty Parlour, where she can express her creative
talents even further. And yes, Tanya also has a very cool hobby. Another one. Taking a childhood love for roller skating to a whole new level, she decided a year ago to create her very own skating team here in Noosa. The Tewantin/Noosa Rollers are an amazing group of women who meet every Sunday to roller skate just for fun. With lace up boots in pink, red, purple, green and blue, these rollers are uber-cool. The group skates at the Leisure Centre which is transformed into a giant skating rink every week. They invite all women to join in on the fun; they even hire skates and hold themed skate nights for ladies and lads, which feel like you're at nightclub with wheels on. I begin to wonder, is Tanya's life ever boring? "My love of the fifties and sixties inspired me to start skating again which I had done in my teens and had loved it. My sons bought me a pair of skates for a Christmas 2
years ago and I headed to an area to try and skate again. "30 years on it was a lot harder than I remembered. I got to thinking there must be somewhere safe that I could skate and the Noosa Leisure Centre popped into my head. "They said they would gladly let me roller skate there, but the cost to hire a court was a little bit steep for just me, so thanks to social media I advertised for likeminded ladies to join me and here we are nearly two years down the track, having a blast." So, this singer, hairdresser, beautician, queen of skating and mum of two young men is one busy, sassy lady! "I have built my life on my dreams, I suppose I'm a bit of a dreamer, which I'm sure can sometimes drive my family insane. Lucky they love me. "I'm not afraid to act on those dreams and make them my reality." â—?

NIPPERS FLOCKING BACK TO PEREGIAN BEACH REVIVAL More than 200 families have registered already to attend the Super Sunday sign on for nippers and lifesavers at Peregian Beach as the club gets set to revive its nippers program, and many more are expected this Sunday. Noosa Heads Surf Life Saving Club (NHSLSC) and Peregian Family and Friends Association (PF&FA) will host the event at the Peregian Beach Club House to learn more about Surf Life Saving. NHSLSC president Ross Fisher said the event would include a rescue demonstration by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter "which the kids will love" and the day to day activities of lifesaving volunteers will be explained. PF&FA spokesman Kane Livingstone said the group had raised more than $700 for the nippers at Peregian program. "We are thrilled to have local Ironwomen and Ironmen legends including Australian champion Lana Rogers, Jordan and Darren Mercer attend, to share their stories with our locals about their experience as lifesavers," he said. "The Hot 91 breakfast crew will be there too." Peregian junior activities coordinator Lyndon Forlonge said the group had been out and about conducting presentations in schools and community groups. "We hope to build upon the current level

After obtaining an extension from UNESCO to 30 September the Noosa Biosphere Reserve 10-year report is on the Noosa Council agenda this month with a schedule it be lodged with the DFAT by 15 August. The review is an assessment of the functioning, zoning, and scale of the biosphere reserve as well as the involvement of the populations living in the site with UNESCO primarily interested in the significant changes that have occurred over the previous 10 years, according to the council report. The Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation (NBRF) engaged a specialist consultant and established a Periodic Review Advisory Group (PRAG) to oversee the review process. The PRAG was made up of one NBRF director, two Noosa councillors, Noosa Council staff and one member of each Noosa Community Biosphere Association, Noosa Integrated Catchment Association and Noosa and District Landcare. The report can only be lodged with UNESCO by the Commonwealth Government through the Department of Foreign Affairs & Trade (DFAT) after review by the State and Commonwealth departments responsible for the environment and Professor Peter Bridgewater, Chair of the Man and Biosphere (MaB) Working Group Australia. ●

CATS IN COUNCIL’S SIGHTS Wandering cats risk being trapped and the owners fined in a clampdown by Noosa Council in response to "a growing number of complaints". A council spokesman said the complaints were received about domestic and feral cats killing native wildlife and even other people's pets. Council has issued a warning to cat owners to stop their pets roaming through natural bushland, neighbourhoods or other people's properties. To retrieve captured cats the owners will need to pay a $250 impoundment fee and an extra $261 infringement for allowing the cat to wander. "And if the cat isn't microchipped, which is required by law, the owner may be issued with an additional $261 fine," the spokesman said. He said microchipping not only helped staff reunite cat with owner, it distinguished a domestic cat from a feral one, which staff may euthanise. "Roaming cats can attack and maim local wildlife as well as other people's pets. The roaming cats themselves are also at risk of being attacked and injured by feral cats," he said For more information visit www.noosa. qld.gov.au/cat-ownership ●
BIOSPHERE CALLS FOR DIRECTORS
12395024-RA33-18
The Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation (NBRF) is calling for applications from people to join its board of directors. Chair of the board Dick Barnes said NBRF was seeking to fill three voluntary director positions to support its objectives under the Man and the Biosphere Program. The successful applicant will join a team that manages a charitable trust and facilitates science-based projects that have long-term benefits to Noosa, he said. The not-for-profit organisation was established by Noosa Council and pursues projects and activities aligned with the strategic objectives of the Noosa Biosphere Reserve. Directors of the board are required to have experience in not-for-profit organisations and governance. "The roles of the directors will be both challenging and rewarding so we are particularly looking for experienced individuals with skills in governance, philanthropic fundraising and communications," Mr Barnes said Interested applicants are invited express their interest by 24 August. SMALL SPACES, BIG AMBITIONS BY MARGARET MACCOLL The community interest in a sustainable and connected community living conference held in Doonan on Saturday overwhelmed organisers who anticipated 150 attendees and ended up with about 600. Co-organiser Jimmy Hirst said the western world was facing social disintegration and disconnection. People are unable to afford living expenses and home ownership and were looking for alternatives, he said. For the past six years Jimmy has travelled across the world looking at the way people are living in connected communities at places including the Findhorn eco-village in Scotland. Working with a project in Kenya he saw the happiness of people in other cultures that western society sees as inferior. "In the East they're good at connection, in the west we're good at disconnection," he said. "It's the disconnect that's bringing us undone. Feeling human value and feeling valued is the crux of it. A lot of people are waking up to it." Jimmy said the conference aimed to work collaboratively and inclusively to open a conversation on a system change. There were a number of tiny house exhibitors on site providing guests with an insight into living small. Ian Ugarte of Small is the New Big was given the challenge by Queensland
Housing to convert an old caravan into a tiny house at a cost under $20,000 and he managed it for $18,500. His 4.3m x 2.5m x 11m dwelling was cleverly constructed with foldaway tables and beds able to sleep seven people and includes a normal size bathroom. Bespoke Habitats directors Paul Brandenburg and Sandy Moore said since establishing four years ago they had been inundated with requests from people wanting shipping container units on their land or in their backyards. Built by qualified builders to Australian standards the units come self-contained requiring only a garden hose for water, a 240-volt lead and connection to sewerage with the model showcased costing under $20,000. Andrew McLean and Claire Ogden came to the event to talk about the Eco Village on the Gold Coast and the tiny, tiny house that provided them with a bedroom and kitchen in the community living space. Andrew said the community housing model enabled people to share larger spaces such as kitchens, laundries, living areas and even a permaculture garden while giving them their own space for privacy and retreat. The Smart Living Society came along to explore affordable living options. Director Max Dunn said Airbnb had taken over low cost rentals leaving little under $400 a week which was unaffordable for people on a pension.
Paul Brandenburg and Sandy Moore with a shipping container Bespoke Habitat. "We're trying to get rentals for a third of a pension," he said. Through grants, subsidies and corporate donations the group aims to secure low cost housing, particularly for the growing number of women over 50 years they were seeing who were living in cars or searching for shared housing with varying levels of success. Sharon and John Rodger of Beechmont told the gathering how they had to sell their business and five-bedroom home after the Global Financial Crisis hit.
After paying off their debts they were left with a 45 degree piece of land they couldn't build on and lived on it in a caravan for 10 years while they rebuilt their lives. They started working for Jardin Tiny House, built a tiny house on their block. The experience taught them a lot about what they valued most. "I don't care about my big house. It doesn't interest me at all," Sharon said. "We hung on to each other. We didn't blame each other. We learnt not to regret anything." â—?

It sounds as though you have some scars ... Both physical and mental! But I had a blast really. A newsroom is truly an exciting place to work; in my second book 'The Editor', my hero Jonno Bligh describes it thus ... 'a cauldron of creativity: stories breaking, phones ringing, keyboards clacking, voices rising in a cacophony of excitement and triumph. The atmosphere is thick with a heady, high-octane mix of inspiration, perspiration and desperation.' What was it like being a newspaper editor? After editing a few weekly papers, I graduated to editing metropolitan dailies when I was 32 - first in Yorkshire, then in my native Scotland where I was editor of the Evening News in Edinburgh. Then I became editor of the Daily Record, which was then Scotland's biggest newspaper and the UK's fifth biggest. Running a busy newsroom is a heady, pressure-filled, action-packed experience that is not for the faint-hearted. The average day boils down to two things: deadlines and decisions. We called it the 'Daily Miracle' - what else could you call putting together 100 pages of amazing stories and pictures from scratch every day, and then ripping it all up and starting afresh the next day? The first draft is of The Editor is written but not yet edited. Simon & Schuster plan to release it in 2019. ● 12396018-SN33-18

Long-time journalist and editor Terence J Quinn last week officially launched his first book, The Scoop, in a series of three action thrillers. Published by Simon and Schuster the series follows the adventures of Aussie journalist Jonno Bligh. Have you always been interested in books? Always. I was fortunate to be part of a family that encouraged reading from an early age. I cut my baby teeth on Enid Blyton's Famous Five series before progressing, in my early teens, to storytelling geniuses like John Buchan, Daniel Defoe and Robert Louis Stevenson. Then it was Robert Ludlum, John D. MacDonald and Steven King, Since then I have lived in a world of words. Did that spark an interest in writing? Without doubt. It helped that English was the only subject that I was any good at in school.Did you enjoy your time in newspapers? To paraphrase a far better writer than me: "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times." Overall, I had a wonderful career in journalism and was fortunate to work in a many countries in Europe, North America and Down Under. On the other hand, the higher one rises in the newspapers, the more dog-eat-dog it becomes - particularly, but not exclusively, in the UK. The upper echelons of what used to be called Fleet Street would make the Borgias look like Quakers.

THE REAL MANUS ISLAND EXPERIENCE Noosa teacher Gabby Sutherland will attend and appear in a film documenting the lives of asylum seekers on Nauru at a special screening on World Humanitarian Day on 18 August at 6.30pm at Event Cinemas, Noosa Junction. Gabby was a former teacher at the Nauru Detention Centre and will join film director Simon Jurian for a Q&A after the screening. The documentary tells the story of how politicians used three words, Stop the Boats, to "demonise people seeking asylum
on Australian shores, fleeing war and persecution; condemning them to indefinite offshore detention and torture in prison camps on Manus and Nauru". The stories of the experience of asylum seeking are told by people seeking asylum including children from within detention centres, secretly filmed in Nauru and Manus. The film features among others Kurdish Journalist and Manus Island detainee Behrouz Boochani, children

AN INSIGHTFUL WALK INDEED On Friday 27 July 259 teams making up 1036 trekkers, mostly women, joined Coastrek Sunshine Coast to walk 30km or 60km for fun, fitness and to raise money for the Fred Hollows Foundation to bring sight to people in third world countries. Coastrek is an initiative of Wild Women on Top, an organisation set up in 2002 by Di Westaway who discovered the personal benefits of physical wilderness challenges and found a way to assist other women to meet their own challenges. The Sunshine Coast event which ended in Noosa Woods raised about $700,000. Team MoGro led by Nicola Rivett and including Clare Robinson, Melissa Burgess and Julie Frausie was considered the event's most inspiring team. Nicola's son, Dane was born with a congenital cataract and had surgery to remove it when he was seven months old. As a result of this journey Nicola started a small business called Kids Eye Gear which sells orthoptic eye patches and other fun, colourful products to help support children wearing glasses and patches and make it fun for kids. nicola@kidseyegear.com.au 061414566894 Unfortunately Nicola was unable to take part in the event on the day as her mother was extrememly unwell but she made it to the finish line to congratulate her team. ●

BRIDGE CONSTRUCTION Construction will start on a $1.5m replacement for the Old Noosa Road Bridge at Cooran in mid-August. Council’s Infrastructure Services Director said the Bridges Renewal Program grant would contribute about half of the cost of this project. The current, single-lane timber bridge has a load limit of only 16 tonnes,” he said. “The new, single-lane concrete bridge will have a load-limit of 44 tonnes. It will be longer and wider than the old bridge. It will have safety barriers and it’s been designed to last 100 years.” During its four months of construction there will detours in place. THERE’S MORE TO CYCLING THAN SIMPLY RIDING A BIKE Sunshine Beach State School Year 3 and 4 students learnt a lot more than they expected about road safety and bike skills when instructors from Bike On visited for recent sessions, thanks to a state government grant to the P&C. A school spokeswoman said the sessions were a resounding success, with learners unanimously declaring that they didn't know learning could be so much fun. "Even reluctant participants came away smiling and feeling much more confident on their bikes," she said. "Children who had very limited previous experience on bicycles were beaming with the feeling of success by the end of the session. Key skills taught included how to do a quick take-off, cornering, obstacles, braking technique and optimal body positioning. "The sessions also included some road safety simulations including stop and give way signs and props to simulate practicing scanning safely for traffic whilst riding." At the conclusion of the session, students were keen to share their knowledge of the A, B, Cs of bike safety. 'A is for checking the air in your tyres, B is for checking your brakes, C is for checking the chain and D is for making sure the wheel will point in the right direction.' Year 3 student, Ella, thought that the program was fun and she has learnt that the

DOROTHY’S TRAVELS BEGIN AT 90 BY JIM FAGAN It used to be "Life begins at 40" and lately the medical profession has chimed in with the cheery "80 is the new 60." The Sunshine Coast's Dorothy Jenkins, however, has just provided the inspiration for a new catchcry - "90's time is travel time!" Dorothy, who lives in Tewantin, is 92 and she's come back from a month-long solo tour which took in Normandy, Brittany, The Loire Valley and a quick visit to Paris She then popped over to Edinburgh where she was born, then to Glasgow, where she went to school, as well as a brief look at Loch Lomond and the Scottish Highlands. And she did it without a laptop, a tablet or an iPhone. Just a little camera which she used for around 200 photographs. As she told Seniors, "All the tour guides were very nice. They used their phones to send messages to my friends in Noosa, so they could keep up with what I was up to." She's just celebrated her 92nd birthday and she's now back home full of memories of cathedrals, stately homes, art galleries, museums, World War 11 graves in Normandy, reuniting with old friends and, a highlight, visiting her old school, Hutchesons' Grammar, in Glasgow. "I left Hutchie 75 years ago in 1943. Everyone there was very kind. They took me to lunch and one teacher said he remembered some of my teachers." Asked why she decided on such a challenging holiday, she said she hadn't been back to Scotland since she and her late husband Jim came to Australia in 1974. They lived first in Sydney, then Adelaide and moved to Tewantin 15 years ago. "Jim died last year and I just had the feeling I wanted to see my birthplace in Scotland and not leave it any later. Going to France was a little icing on the cake." Does she have any advice for would be travellers nudging 90 and over? "Travel light. I had a small push case. Also, ask your travel agency to arrange wheelchairs and someone to push you at every airport. Airports are enormous and there are huge distances to walk. "And take a walking stick. I have a fold up one which fitted in my case. It was invaluable, but I admit it was a bit hard walking on the cobbled lanes of Paris." And what do Dorothy's ballet class and mah-jong friends say about her Yellow Brick Road adventure from Oz to the other side of the world?
Visiting her old school.
On her travels. "At first they didn't believe I would go. Now they think it's fabulous." Does she have any more travel plans? "I'm thinking of New Zealand. I've never been there." â—?

NOOSA ON SHOW AT EKKA The Noosa Shire will be well represented at the Royal Queensland Show (the Ekka) which begins in Brisbane tomorrow, running for 10 days and attracting about 400,000 visitors.
The Ekka showcases the best of Queensland, attracting more than 21,000 competition entries from woodchop to showjumping, 10,000 animals from beef cattle to cats and dogs, world-class live
entertainment and award-winning food and wine. Noosa residents will be showcasing their wares, animals and skills at the Ekka. Look out for them if you're heading for the iconic show, running since 1876. ●
BRIGHT STAR HAS THE LOOKS FOR THE SHOW BY MARGARET MACCOLL While juggling work placement, study and motherhood Laura Bleasdale-Adkins hopes this week to fit in taking her champion Hungarian Viszla to the Royal Queensland Show. Hungarian Viszlas were bred as a gun dog to accompany a hunter to flush out and retrieve prey. Having bred the breed for about eight years Laura plans to take her three-year old multiple award winner Australian Champion Canoz Roknrose Starbright, known to the family as Cassie, to the Ekka on Friday. Her father is a champion who lives in the UK and her mother is Australian and Cassie is a product of artificial insemination. Laura loves the breed she has been involved with for about 12 years and says they need time invested in their training. "They're a very sensitive breed," she said. "They're incredibly intelligent and used as assistance and service dogs." Cassie's sister is an assistance dog but Cassie has all the credentials to be a champion and the temperament to be a star performer. At home she happily bounds around the yard but having been trained since three months of age Cassie knows as soon as the lead is slipped over her head it's show time. It's clear the show ring is a role she's happy to play.Laura said shows can be very noisy, busy places and the dogs that take part need to be the right temperament to be able to handle it. ●
Prize winning Wroxton Phantom.
CHAMPION AMONG CATS Jo-Anne Clarke of Tewantin will spend Saturday, Sunday and Monday at the Royal Queensland Show with her magnificent ragdoll cats. The family's passion for cats developed out of their love for their first cat, a moggy that lived for 20 years and was just "a great cat". Now they breed and show award winning ragdoll cats. "It's very social. It's nice being with a group of people who share the same passion," she said. They will be showing cats and kittens at the Ekka, two females and two males including Wroxton Phantom who already caught the eye of judges, recently collecting a best in show award. Jo-Anne described the ragdoll breed as very laid back and tolerant and lacking in possessing the predatory behaviour and survival skills of most other cats. "They don't jump. They have no idea of cars. They would just go up to a dog to say hello," she said. "They are definitely an indoor cat." ●

Cooroibah potter Wendy Britton sent her pottery entry to the Brisbane Ekka a couple of weeks ago but won't know if it was awarded a prize until it returns in the mail. In past years she has received awards including grand champion. One year a friend spotted her piece on display at the Ekka and told her she had won a place but other times she waits to see if it comes back with a ribbon on it. This year her entry of a non-functional vase is in the "surface decoration" division. "It's not about the function but what the glace is and how you decorate it," she said. "It's pit fired with egg shells and has a really nice pattern." The busy ceramics artist has been supplying local businesses and showing her works since she completed a Diploma of Fine Arts in 2009 at the now closed Noosa TAFE. Wendy had no intention of becoming a professional potter. She went looking for a hobby at Wallace House one day and discovered pottery and it just felt right. ● noosatoday.com.au

Post your letters to: 36 Mary St, Noosaville, 4566 or email: newsdesk@noosatoday.com.au
NORTH SHORE EFFORTS ARE WELL UNDERWAY Thankyou (Name withheld, NT July 26) for your letter regarding the Noosa North Shore (NNS). Over the last four months efforts regarding the NNS and our river systems have included hosting a teleconference; bringing together frontliners and working with council and state departments to form a stakeholder group for short, medium and long term solutions to identified issues, that also feed into the Draft Great Sandy Management Plan. We have also been researching and working with the Department Agriculture and Fisheries and the Department of Environment and Sciences to address a number of other concerns, including historical question marks around potential chemicals and other pollutants in our waterways. Via parliamentary TV and Hansard, you can access my questions to Ministers during Budget Estimates to seek extra funds to accommodate increased monitoring and compliances of our river, beaches and within our National Parks. Regardless of who manages - state or council - they require increased resources. Our small team have also been pulling apart the Sustainable Fishing Strategies and Boating and Recreational Guides, as part of ensuring any reviews contain ‘Noosa centric’ concerns including a needed decrease in pippy bag limits. We always welcome extra researchers in these endeavours, so if you have some spare time, we would really appreciate it! ‘Name withheld’, I hope this information has given you some assurance that efforts are underway and encourage you and anyone else who loves Noosa as much as we all do, to just contact us with any concerns or suggestions, or drop in for a coffee and a chat! Sandy Bolton, Noosa MP
JUST DOING HER JOB I feel that Maryanne Degrassi’s letter (NT, 19 July) may err on the side of myopia somewhat. If Cr Jackson questions council procedure, or the amount of rates increase, then she is demonstrating the very reason she was elected to council, that is, to represent the ratepayers of Noosa Shire, and one of the requirements of our elected representatives is to ensure proper procedures are followed and necessary funds are available to ensure proper operation of services. I would also question the assertion that Noosa is “one of the most transparent in Queensland“, as a quick search on the internet will reveal multiple councils with very transparent websites. I wonder if Cr Jackson were in state or federal politics, would the same criticism be levelled at her for speaking her mind, or

Peter Smith took this shot of a Clearwing Hawk Moth “Which I discovered as I was about to remove a dead avocado tree from the garden. Luckily it remained in place long enough for me to run and collect my camera,“ Peter said. If you would like to submit a photo for Lenscape, email us at newsdesk@noosatoday.com.au would she be applauded as having the guts to question the decision makers? All that aside, I believe that disagreement and debate are signs of a healthy democratic process, at any level of government. A united council should not be comprised of sheep, but of diverse and differing individuals, who represent the diverse and different elements of the electorate that voted them in. Perhaps those who decry those that question should look back and consider themselves fortunate that people in the past had the courage to ask annoying and consciencepricking questions about development of Noosa’s natural wonders. What is good for the goose, should be good for the gander. Ken Coleman, Tewantin
ENERGY POWERED VESSEL According to our Green warriors, the Great Barrier Reef is under serious threat because of our reliance on fossil fuels including coal and oil - so naturally the Sea Shepherd vessel Steve Irwin received a warm welcome when it dropped anchor off Noosa on its voyage up the east coast to highlight the campaign for ’clean’ renewable energy. But hang on .... while it features a large skull image, unlike the pirate ships of old, there was not a sail to be seen - nor a power generating windmill or a deck covered in solar panels to power an electric motor for propulsion. So as the 59.5 metre vessel powers up the east coast with its 1017 gross tonnage and draught of 5.4 metres at a speed of 15+ knots, hopefully dodging migrating whales and coral reefs along the way, it’s a far cry from James Cook’s Endeavour, which relied solely on wind, tide and the captain’s skill. The obvious question for all the flag wavers at Main Beach, including Mayor Tony Wellington, is how many thousands of litres of CO2- producing fossil fuel is the Steve Irwin burning on just this latest voyage of environmental enlightenment? Some might suggest a tinge of hypocrisy, but nothing to rival Labor’s stance on the controversial Adani coal mine, which varies depending on how far north or south of the Queensland border Bill Shorten happens to be at the time. Just sayin’... John Mikkelsen, Castaways Beach

KEEP DOGS OUT OF NATIONAL PARK I feel very strongly about keeping dogs out of National Parks for the safety and preservation of these precious places. This week I witnessed in one week only, on three separate occasions, dogs running in the dunes toward and into the National Park at North Sunshine beach. The owners of two dogs called and whistled but were ignored by their dogs. The third owner went into the water to swim and had no idea what his dog was doing! These are uncontrolled dogs. The three dogs mentioned eventually wandered back at their leisure, some 10 to 15 mins later, and were praised by the owners with pats. So the question is: What do the dogs do in the National Park? Defecate? Sniff out and hunt small native animals? Or just enjoy all those interesting smells, as it is their apparent right and cause no harm or damage, as their owners would have us believe! Next question is: Why do we have a 'Dogs Off Leash’ zone bordering on Noosa National Park?? This is relatively small stretch of beach and it has a high concentration of dogs at popular times. It is an outrageous error of judgement and I call upon National Parks and Wildlife organisations to stand up against this decision. I ask for your guidance in achieving a relocation of the 'Dogs Off Leash’ zone. I will support, join and assist any action group suggested to help achieve this outcome. It has become apparent to me that if you approach the dog owners and question their ability to control their dogs you will be met with a belligerent barrage of “go to another beach" and “this is a dog beach". This the same bullying attitude is also directed toward parents with young children who are frightened by the dogs running near them as they play. Council could clarify this - a sign perhaps - ’Dogs get priority Beach. Enter at own Risk. Children not welcome’. I can only suggest that if it’s such a good idea to have 'Dogs Off Leash’ at North Sunshine Beach, let's share the joy! Declare all Noosa beaches ’Dogs Off Leash’ and you can all have your very own putrid ’Dog Sh** Alley’ and share the love fairly! It’s definitely not sensible to have 'Dogs
off Leash’ on a beach that borders a National Park and resolving this problem falls into the realm of protecting the area. I would be more than happy to discuss this further. Many thanks for the wonderful work done to preserve our National Parks and Wildlife. Sue Monticone, ratepayer for 37 years at Sunshine Beach.
PLASTIC BAG TURNAROUND Coles has done a Trump on its plastic bag ban. When Coles said it was banning plastic bags, they meant they actually weren’t. Reusable plastic bags will be offered to customers for free indefinitely. These bags are thicker and worse for the environment. When people don’t have to pay for them, it will diminish their perceived value and fewer people will re-use them. Bridge Muir, Cooroy
COUNCIL SUCCESS? Here we go again, Noosa mayor praising his council on a wonderful financial year, while the facts and numbers are indicating the opposite. Once again, even though they had to ‘delete’ many of the planned projects, they are yet to achieve full completion of their capital works. Their claim of unemployment being the lowest in Queensland is only due to unemployed not being able to afford to live here. Their recent solution to the parking and traffic nightmare at Noosa Heads, e-Noosa is a laughable dream, that doesn’t take into account the thousands of ratepayers who bothered sending in recommendations when Noosa Council consulted residents a few months ago about solving the problem, and beside, ignoring the most obvious fact, which was that the majority of Noosa ratepayers are not willing to give up their car to jump on an electric bus! And in their latest proposal, the 'Draft Noosa river plan’ this council is admitting that to fully implement their plan, they would have to charge ratepayers through general rates! Successful financial year ... what a joke! Dom Massoni, Verrierdale noosatoday.com.au

A sound feast for your ears
Macbeth by Jo Nesbo
Regurgitator - Headroxx
The unique and wonderful free entertainment event "Sound Feast" is back at The J, Noosa Junction on Friday 17 August from 6pm. This month's line-up announcements so far includes the return of UK based Z-Star Trinity who have blown the minds of Sound Feast attendee's in the past with their high energy driving rock. Zee's inimitable talent for improvising onstage is simply exhilarating to watch, inspiring standing ovations from music legends; Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin), Roger Daltrey (The Who) and Amy Winehouse. For the first time, Sound Feast will feature 'The Steele Syndicate' and 'SoLar'. The Steele Syndicate have got the groove, and it's infectious. ●
A clever take on Shakespeare's play. The familiar characters are all there. Macbeth is a flawed police inspector with his eye on the top position of power in town. His paramour, Lady, one time prostitute turned business owner of Inverness Casino is his conspirator, until her mind becomes unbalanced by the flow on of their misdeeds. Hecate heads organised crime and controls the drug market for his powerful product 'brew'. Duncan, Malcolm, Banquo, and Duff are members of the vice squad. Macbeth's paranoia for what he sees as rightfully his leads to the systematic framing and murder of those who stand in his way. Review submitted by Jenny Carter of Friends of the Noosa Library. ●
This is the band whose commentary on the music industry's evolution has previously seen them recording one album in a 'bubble' studio and releasing another as a wearable button badge. But as Quan Yeomans and Ben Ely drop their comparatively conventional ninth album, genres get characteristically spliced and diced while the lads seem to be having a shitload of fun. There's more going on under the surface though. Grafitti Is Coming Alive may well be a reaction to artist Ben Adams (aka Freak Street), whose cover image was inspired by the 'Gurge's initial album concept of constantly being under mental and social pressure, which in turn fueled the band to go even harder with its execution. ●

SEE ARTISTS IN CAPTIVITY Noosa Open Studios provides locals and visitors to beautiful Noosa with the unique chance to visit artists in their private studios over ten days in August. This is an annual free event, running from Friday, August 17 to Sunday, August 26. Building on the success of the past two years, in 2018 the event will have more than 60 artists participating. The first weekend will feature studios on the coast. The second weekend will see artists in the hinterland open their studios. Local galleries are also part of the event, with exhibitions and workshops being held throughout the ten day period. This will provide visitors with many opportunities to participate, whether by viewing art, buying it or making it themselves! All of it is a celebration of our
artists and visual arts across Noosa. Visitors will see a whole range of art, from drawings to paintings to ceramic art and sculptures, as well as glass art, textile art and installation art. Much of the art is available to buy, and many of the artists will be holding workshops and demonstrations throughout the event. It is a great way to get out and about and see more of our local talent and the hidden parts of Noosa. This is a creative community event, produced by artists for artists. It is supported by grants from Tourism Noosa and Noosa Council. To find more information about Noosa Open Studios and learn about the artists, go to www.noosaopenstudios.com. au. ●
STEVE TYSON & THE TRAIN REX
EUMUNDI KEEPS THE TALENT Byron Bay-based singer-songwriter Steve Tyson has traveled the world, taking his music to Europe on eight tours and playing at some of the great international folk and roots festivals. He’ll be taking to the stage in The Bunker on Friday 17 August with his band The Train Rex, supported by Sunshine Coast singer songwriter Noel Gardner. STEVE TYSON & THE TRAIN REX Tyson has released three critically acclaimed albums, scoring 4 star reviews in the national music press. His latest album is Wrong Train Right Station. Tyson delivers live with passion, soul, humour, and fine musicianship, joined on stage by his band The Train Rex featuring bass player John Barr, drummer Andy Kirkcaldy and guitarist Ian Shawsmith. NOEL GARDNER He has been called Australia’s Pete Seeger, and the Sunshine Coast’s
Paul Kelly - and like them, he is probably only appreciated fully by a small proportion of the general population. But that proportion is an important and growing one, and graces Australia’s national folk festival circuit. Noel is the only solo performer to have performed at every one of the 18 Maleny/Woodford Folk Festivals - and his music is as fresh and relevant now as it was in 1989, when he teamed up with Mark Gillett to record the iconic “Watching the Obi Flow’. His capacity to sing of both beauty and injustice is a refreshing reminder to keep thinking about what kind of world we want to live in - and what kind of world we want our kids to inherit from us. In concert, Noel is delightfully understated and it’s a welcome relief. TICKETS: $15 at www.imperialhoteleumundi.com.au. Doors open 8pm ●

SWIMMERS TRIUMPH IN NOOSA Personal best times were scored and records broken when about 400 young swimmers descended on the Noosa Aquatic Centre on the weekend to compete in the Wide Bay short course championships. Noosa swimming team coach Graeme Brewer said about 80 per cent of their swimmers had achieved personal best times at the end of winter event. He said about seven members of the team would be heading to Chandler aquatic centre in Brisbane in two weeks for the state championships. The team's fellow coach John Rodgers will accompany swimmers Nick Sloman and Karina Lee this month when they compete in the Pan Pacific Swimming Championships in Japan in the 10km and 1500m events. â—?

SWIM TEACHER MAKES QUITE A SPLASH AT AWARDS EVENT Noosa Aquatic Centre swim instructor Sarah Nobelius has been named Teacher of the Year in the Infant and Preschool Aquatics category of the Queensland AUSTSWIM Awards 2018. The category was hotly contested and Sarah will now represent the state at the National awards later in the year. "I am so proud to receive this award," Ms Nobelius said. "Just to be nominated by my supervisor was exciting enough, but teaching children to swim and stay safe around water - it doesn't get any better than that, I'm delighted." Noosa Aquatic Centre coordinator noosatoday.com.au
NAC staffers Stephen, Sarah and Rita at the pool. Stephen James said the award recognised Sarah's commitment to nurturing children's love for the water while teaching them the
confidence and skills to stay safe. "Sarah is a massive hit with the kids, their parents and the whole NAC team. She easily engages with children of all ages and abilities and she generally has such a positive attitude in all that she does," Mr James said. "Sarah started her swim teaching career with us six years ago and is a much loved and valued member of our Learn to Swim Team. "Sarah always gives her best and has the ability to get the most out of the children. She brings lots of patience, a great imagination and loads of fun to her classes."
AUSTSWIM accreditation is the industry standard for Teachers of Swimming and Water Safety. AUSTSWIM spokesperson Sarah Mansfield said the AUSTSWIM Awards were an opportunity to acknowledge the commitment, contribution and professionalism to education and safety of individual teachers. There are currently over 33,500 AUSTSWIM Teachers in Australia and internationally. "It's the first time a Noosa instructor has won this award so we are thrilled for Sarah," Mr James said. â—?

TRY THIS ‌ a little acting
AUDITION CALL FOR ALL THE ACTORS... BY HOLLIE HARRIS Calling all actors once again! There is another fantastic opportunity to take to the stage of the fabulous Noosa Arts Theatre and stretch your acting abilities. What The Butler Saw is a shameless comedy written by Joe Orton and directed by Tania Nash. Fallen trousers, a little blackmail, and a lot of innuendo abound in this chaotic romp of hysterically silly proportions. Dr Prentice is married to a nymphomaniac. When caught by his wife interviewing an attractive new secretary, he hides her in the office. Unbeknownst to him, Mrs Prentice is being seduced and blackmailed by a lusty bellhop who wants the same position. Throw in a government inspector, cross-dressing and slamming doors, and the laughs keep coming in this relentlessly funny comedy. Are you interested in playing a part? Auditions for What the Butler Saw are on Wednesday 15 August at 7pm at Noosa Arts Theatre. The information session is held on Wednesday 8th August also at 7pm at Noosa

HOSPITALS CUT OUT THE SUGAR
THREE … Health stories we're talking about
BY HOLLIE HARRIS
1
OSHER GETS RIPPED The host dropped a whopping 9kg of fat in 10 weeks, and gained 2.5kg of muscle by eating nothing but a plant-based diet and "training every day until I was a flat pancake on the gym floor." He started this transformation as a way to help him manage his mental health issues off of meds. "The mental health benefits are incredible," he said.
2
HEALTH RECORDS The digital record keeping system has caused controversy since Australians first learned in May they would have until October 15 to opt out of their record if they didn't want one. Around 20,000 Australians have opted out of the My Health Record so far.
3
STANDING DESKS ARE A THING Giving standing desks to 20 per cent of office workers would save $84 million in healthcare costs and 7,492 health-adjusted life years by preventing obesity, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease, according to the first evaluation in Australia.
The Queensland State Government has announced a ban on sugary drinks and unhealthy snacks from public hospitals and healthcare facilities. The ban will take effect by the end of the year and aims to tackle obesity. Queensland Health Minister Steven Miles has also called for a suite of actions to improve children's diets and prevent child obesity by reducing children's exposure to unhealthy food and sugary drink marketing. Heart Foundation CEO Stephen Vines commended the Queensland Government on the landmark decision to rein in the consumption of sugary drinks and junk food across the state while congratulating the Minister for a commitment to reduce children's exposure to junk food marketing. "Making the healthy choice the easy choice for patients, staff and visitors in Queensland hospitals and health care settings is immensely important to tackling obesity and reducing the risk of chronic disease,
including heart disease," Mr Vines said. "We know that 26 percent of children and 64 percent of Queensland adults, more than 2 million people, are overweight or obese. Although many factors influence obesity, research shows sugary drinks and energy dense foods play a significant role in driving up obesity rates. "It's too easy to grab junk food and sugary drinks from hospitals and we know these foods can come at a cost to health and are a major contributor to people's intake of sugar, saturated fat, salt and energy. "We congratulate the Queensland Government and the Minister for this milestone, which will make it easier for Queenslanders to make healthier choices." Heart Foundation, in conjunction with Cancer Council Queensland, is running an Everyday Health Survey on sugar-sweetened beverages, to identify consumer habits and assess support for actions to reduce consumption. Queenslanders aged 18 and over can complete the Everyday Health Survey: Sugar-sweetened beverages.

ABOUT FACES, NOT PLACES Through home stay journeys the Sunshine Coast branch of Friendship Force promotes understanding, cultural education and citizen diplomacy. Branch secretary Carol Harman said the not-for-profit organisation operates in 60 countries on six continents. "We travel all over the world staying in our hosts' homes," she said. "It is just like staying with friends. We become one of the family. Our hosts show us aspects of their culture that most tourists would not encounter. "In return, we invite travellers into our homes and proudly share with them our Australian culture and the magnificent scenery of the Sunshine Coast and its hinterland." Carol recently returned from a memorable journey to Canada. "I spent a week in Quebec where I attended a lunch at Parliament House," she said. "I also visited North Bay just out of Toronto, where I stayed in an amazing log cabin style house built around a school house which dated back to the 1760s. It was an amazing experience. I loved the lakes and learning all about Canada's logging and farming history." TOUGH GAMES PUSH EUMUNDI DRAGONS U9 Match Report by Dan Sparks After an exceptional game last week against St Andrews our under 9's were full of determination and confidence. So, however, were Noosa. After several unanswered tries by the Noosa Fins the boys quickly realised that they had a tough game on their hands and regrouped and dug deep. They responded to Noosa's consistent attack with exceptional close range tackling by the forwards such as Louis, Will C, Zac, Tristian and Alex B and cover defence by our backs including Alex E and Max who consistently shows no fear in pulling down boys twice his size. Our support play was also much improved with our usual line breaker Jet able to offload to the likes of Will, Jack, Eli and Tom who all had some strong runs. Three tries to Jet and one from Jack 'Flash' feel a touch short of Noosa's tally who put on a great display of accurate passing and running rugby - a good area for us to focus on next week. Our boys played gallantly however with excellent safe tackling and a never give up attitude. Coaches Bryan and Brendons hard work and commitment to the boys is evidenced in their consistent improvement and attitude during the games. Well done Dragons! Man of the match went to our new recruit Alex who was incredibly enthusiastic in his first ever game of rugby and shows great promise. Under 8s by Coach Will Vine Our under 8s had a very tough game

TEWANTIN NOOSA LADIES Cornered. against the mighty Noosa Fins team on the weekend. With the boys all working as hard as they could to break the Fins strong defence to eventually get a try in the second half. Even though the boys may have thought they were down and out there were a lot of positive things to come out of the game. Including the sense of mateship that came with sideline support from Jasper who despite being out of action came to support his teammates in Buderim. An effort that was acknowledged and appreciated by those on the field. Including by our player of the game Ted Wiles who earned the trophy for his exceptional concentration the whole game and bouncing back after a falcon (ball hit his nose). His effort to keep playing was another show of the true team spirit that our club is known for. Go Dragons! ●

MANGROVE JACK
PERFECT ANGLING WEATHER, FISH APLENTY
Ryder Worth with a nice Flathead taken down at Stummers Ceek near Coolum. noosatoday.com.au
With light breezes and little swell last weekend, anglers headed offshore in droves. There have been heaps of snapper and pearlies around the reef at the moment with North Reef, Chardon's Reef, Barwon Banks and the Hards producing some outstanding fish. Snapper have been well spread throughout most of the major reefs, with some bigger fish caught during the lower light periods. There has been the odd coral trout taken from Sunshine Reef. Fishing hard to the reef is the best way to come into contact with a nice trout. There're big cobia hanging around at this time of the year and they love nothing more than live bait on a slow sinking floater rig. With the smaller tides and less run try and get a good burley trail going, then send down a couple of light or even unweighted baits. The snapper will be drawn in the burley and hopefully find your baits. In the river; those cooler nights make fishing the Noosa River perfect if you are into chasing trevally and big tailor. These fish seem to revel in those cooler water temperatures and with the Noosa River being only one of two places in the world that has an everglade it has a great food source. These cold water predators love nothing more than forcing bait to the
surface to feed so casting surface lures can see some amazing results. For the anglers that are working the banks the river mouth and dog beach area has been producing great numbers of quality bream, whiting and flathead. Live worms and yabbies have been the best on the whiting while live herring have been standouts for the bream and flatties. For those of you without a cast net or yabby pump, pilchards and worms have been the favourite dead baits. The Gympie Terrace stretch of the river has also been producing with prawns and worms the favourite for the kids. Heading a little further upriver the Tewantin stretch and the first ski run has been producing Jew fish in the low light periods morning and afternoon. Noosa's North Shore has again been firing for tailor with quality fish coming from the area north of Teewah. This is that great time of the year where they start to school in large numbers so having plenty of angler fishing near you will tend to keep the school around. Another fish you find prevalent this time of the year are Jewies. These fish love nothing more than a fresh tailor fillet so if you catch a smaller legal tailor take the fillets off and run it down a set of 4/0 ganged hooks. The southern beaches around Marcus and Perigian have
also been seeing tailor and Jew activity, Just remember Jew tend to hunt more on the darker nights so the bigger tides around the new moon are the ideal times to target them. So on behalf of Jack Mangrove, best of luck on your fishing adventures! ●

TIGERS COMPREHENSIVE IN STRONG WIN Gun on baller Tommy Templeton has bagged five goals in a commanding performance to help the tigers to a comfortable 16 goal victory in Brisbane last weekend. It's actually the explosive on ballers third time in season 2018 that he has kicked 8 goals - an amazing achievement by a player who in two years has really made a stamp on the Division 1 Hart Sport competition The big win keeps the tigers safe in second place still half a game off ladder leaders Maroochydore. The game at Yeronga also acts as good practise for the Noosa
Tigers as it is on that ground that this year's preliminary and grand finals will be played. Templeton had plenty of helpers in the victory with Nick Hill (4 goals) back to his damaging best and Tyler Stack also gaining much of the footy. A massive night game awaits the tiger faithful this Saturday at Weyba road as the second placed tigers take on the third placed Caloundra in what should be an intriguing battle. Last year the game attracted a terrific crowd and I'm sure nothing will be different this weekend. Ex Sydney and Carlton champion David Rhys-Jones will entertain
us at our President's Dinner with plenty of great accommodation packages and auction items up for grabs .Also don't forget our $5000 dollar cash draw coming up on August 19th will be one not to be missed. There is plenty happening at the Rococo's Bar and Bistro Noosa Tigers over the next couple of weeks. See you at the club. Pittsy Junior Reports Noosa Under 14 - Div 2 Noosa Red Under 14's pulled off a great win on Sunday, defeating Gympie Pomona. The Tigers were a couple of rungs behind
the Cats on the ladder prior to the game however the Tigers came out of the gates early and were never headed. It was a great team effort in what was easily the team's best performance of the season. Erik Mahe was instrumental in the middle all day and along with Torin Flanagan, dominated the midfield. Noah Gipters returned to his best form and work tirelessly on his wing and Beau McWaters continues to show his potential and was great at centre half forward. The final score was Noosa 7.7.49 to Gympie Pomona 2.2.14. ●

EAGLES SCORE A WIN AND A LOSS BY REBECCA PETRIE The weather was perfect on Saturday. It was very nice to be out and about. U7 Gold had a fantastic game against Palmwoods winning 5-0! Congratulations team! Coach Bec was so proud at how well everyone played.Well done Sienna who defended so well on field, including taken a brave hit to the face! You kept on going and didn't give up. Also well done to Matthew, Cruiz, Zach for also defending and passing so well on field but also doing a great job in goals. Lastly, well done to Oscar and Myles for your great goals and again for showing great skill with your passing. Myles was named player of the week. A very exciting game for U10 Black this week who put up a great fight against Coolum. Unfortunately no win this week, with the score 3 -1 but defence worked very hard to help the goalie make sure that number didn't go up. Well done Iggy, who continues to do a fantastic job as goalie. Well done to Ella, Jaymie, Cooper and Dylan who did showed great skill in the defense. The midfielders ran hard up and down the field, doing the best to keep the ball at our end of the field, well done Baden, Cooper, Portia and great effort from strikers Barnaby and Rohnan! Barnaby got man of the match for his outstanding play. Well done Mate! â—?

GROWING OLD DISGRACEFULLY IN BALI

to chase some surf - or rather, to find somewhere the relentless swells that had been pounding the southern coast might find some grooming. We checked into the fabulous Bombora Wave Lodge at Medewi, a relatively mellow left point break I’ve been surfing since the late ‘70s, and since the Bombora opened right on the point a couple of years back, I’ve been a regular customer. Now it was time to share it with family, but the swell kicked again and we battled a mighty sweep and copped a few washthroughs on the head to get our meagre share. But hey, three generations of my family surfed one of my favourite waves in the world together. That was pretty special.
On the third day, when the swell jacked again, we called time on getting smashed at Medewi - in the surf that is, not so much at the poolside bar - and motored up the mountains to another favourite place, Bali Eco Stay Resort, to see old mate Johnny Blundstone, once Noosa’s most attentive waiter. I’ve written about Johnny’s piece of paradise in this space before, but I hadn’t visited in a couple of years so it was great to see the advances made in self-sufficiency, with the restaurant now almost 100 percent garden to plate, including farmed fish stock. Founding chef Mini may have retired, but her spirit lives on in the sensational flavours
emanating from her kitchen. It’s truly amazing what Johnny, wife Cath and son Hughie (now studying at Sunshine Beach High) have done on this rugged tropical mountainside in just a handful of years. Despite constant regrading after the wets, it’s still a bone-jarring ride up the hill to see them, but worth every second of discomfort. Take a day-trip for lunch (an hour and a bit from Seminyak or Ubud) or experience a night or two of magical tranquility in their superb bungalows, watching the fireflies over the rice paddies. Any week that starts with an earthquake is going to be interesting, but this past week in Bali has been a sequence of crazy scenes all meshed into a hell of a good time. And if it’s a signal that you’ve truly entered the golden years when your children start to have significant middle-age milestone birthdays, then at least we’re not going to go quietly! So we checked into a small hotel in Legian to prepare for Sam’s 40th birthday celebrations, and there, on the wall telly in our room, is an ancient surf dude puttering around the back streets of Kuta on a scooter, stopping here and there to scoff nasi goring at street stalls while dribbling on about how the fried egg must be placed on top of the rice just so. Yes, it’s me, your columnist, and it’s not pretty. “Rick Stein gone horribly wrong” is how one of my surf buddies described it. I’d all but forgotten that a year or so ago, along with Bali-based surfers Matt George and Rizal Tanjung, I’d given a day of my time for a film on Bali’s surfing history, being shot by a Singapore mob for distribution through the Accor hotel group, in return for my Bali book being promoted in the piece. Well, there was none of that, and very little surf history either, but they succeeded in making me and Big Matt look like a couple of old salts you’d run a mile from if you saw them propping up a bar. Only Rizal came out of it with selfesteem intact, as you would expect of Bali’s greatest surf champion. We then limbered up with a birthday-eve sunset beer with Matt Hoy and a goodly dinner with Simon and Sharon Anderson, in town for the Quiksilver Eco-Challenge, which was certainly that, with local Tipi Jabrik beating a star-studded field in solid Uluwatu Outside Corner. The day after the contest, both Mr Hoy and Mr Anderson seemed to have built up powerful thirsts, so I was well and truly acclimatized next day by the time we hit the sand at Mr Chocolate’s Beach Bar for sundown drinks and a sensational birthday babi guling (suckling pig). Our kids grew up on the beach in Bali, and it’s great to see them introducing their kids to the simple pleasures the island still has to offer - feet in the sand, cold beer, good tucker, a guitar or a uke or two and plenty of smiling faces - rather than the $20 cocktails of the doof-doof beach clubs. It was a great family time, but having loosened the belt buckle a few too many stops over a couple of days, we needed
