Timber Industry representatives and Coalition MPs at Parliament House.
Timber petition Kath Gannaway Timber Industry operators from across Victoria were in Melbourne today (Tuesday 7 August) as a petition signed by more than 2000 supporters was presented in Parliament. Deputy Leader of The Nationals and Member for Euroa, Steph Ryan MP, presented the petition which calls on the government to honour Timber Supply Agreements (TSAs) signed before June 30, 2017. The Mail reported in May that a group of six sawmill operators, including three in Central Highlands - Dindi Sawmill in Murrindindi, Kelly's Timber in Wesburn and Powelltown Sawmills - accused the State Government of shutting down extensions to existing timber supply agreements, ceasing tendering
contracts for wood supply beyond 2021 and placing a halt on renewing some harvest and haulage contracts in favour of propping up the Heyfield Sawmill in Gippsland. The State Government bought Heyfield, which was under threat of closing, in 2017. Both Sue McKinnell (Dindi Sawmills) and Harold Fox (Powelltown) spoke out at the time demanding security for the industry with longterm licencing. Richard Pelz, a haulage contractor from Gippsland was at Parliament House. He said the timber industry and the businesses and people that rely were calling on the government to save the jobs and livelihoods of the communities that surround Victorian timber mills he said were under threat. "I have been operating our haulage com-
pany for 35 years. We have survived droughts, the Global Financial Crisis and the rising cost of fuel but we cannot survive the government's inaction," he said. Mr Pelz employs 30 fulltime workers as well as six other subcontractors hauling all wood products across Victoria. Ms Ryan was joined by Member for Eildon Cindy McLeish MP and other Coalition MPs from around Victoria. She said the collapse of Victoria's $7.3 billion timber industry would be catastrophic for regional Victoria and accused the Labor Government of putting jobs at risk and leaving families, businesses and communities in limbo. "For over six months sawmill operators have been waiting for the government to pro-
vide some certainty, but they have been met with silence," she said. Responding in May to the same calls by the timber industry, a spokesperson for Agriculture & Regional Development Minister Jaala Pulford, told the Mail that the government supported the industry and was committed to jobs and investment in regional and rural Victoria. He said the government was investing in the long term future of the industry by diversifying and complementing the supply from native forestry. "We continue to work extensively with industry, local governments, local communities and relevant stakeholders to develop a plan for increased plantation supply that secures jobs in timber processing and benefits the State as a whole," he said.

SOCIALLY SPEAKING...
Covering the foothills of the Yarra Ranges & Murrindindi Shires
The editor’s desk "I haven't been to Healesville Sanctuary since I was a kid," is a sentence I've used many times since landing on a desk in our Healesville office. But it was only this past week that I wondered why, as I started bedding down our latest Tourist News magazine. I'd travelled across Australia and overseas since I'd last made the short drive to the uniquely-Aussie attraction; since I last took a Sunday drive through the Dandenongs; since I last visited the Tesselaar Tulip Festival. I'd been so eager to see the world that I'd forgotten about my own back yard. After compiling the spring magazine, the Yarra Valley spring racing carnival, the Mustard Tree Op-Shop and Café in Lilydale, and the Birdsland Reserve walking tracks are all on my must-see list. I'll be dragging friends and family with me to open their eyes to the possibilities on their doorstep. There's no need to travel to the other side of the city, the state, the country or the globe - the Yarra Ranges is rich with world-class attractions, events, food, wine, music ... While we target visitors to the Yarra Ranges with our seasonal snapshot, I do hope our local readers pick up Tourist News, too, and become tourists in their own towns. I'd also love to hear about where you send your friends or family when they visit the Yarra Ranges, so I share a few hidden gems in our coming editions and check them out myself! Casey Neill
WIN A NIGHT AWAY... PLUS BREAKFAST! Here is a great reader offer from Foothills Conference, Function and Convention Centre, the premier destination for Yarra Valley accommodation in Mooroolbark. More than just a conference centre, Foothills is on 20 acres of beautiful rustic surrounds, provides a comfortable and relaxing atmosphere with ample access to on-site leisure facilities, and is a gateway to all of the tourist attractions the Yarra Valley has to offer. WORKING TO REDUCE BUSHFIRE RISK IN YOUR COMMUNITY As part of the Victorian Government’s Powerline Bushfire Safety Program, AusNet Services is installing leading edge technology to reduce the risk of powerline related bushfires in your area.
The August-September issue of the Yarra Ranges Local (community newsletter) informs us that the Yarra Ranges Council is seeking to involve the Healesville-based Wurundjeri in the Warburton Mountain Bike Destination Project. The local Old Warburton residents vehemently oppose the council forcing this intrusive and damaging scheme onto our little settlement. We have been treated as if we don’t exist and therefore our needs and amenity can be ignored. It’s a case of a small, powerless community being trampled on by government. I hope this has not been lost on the Wurundjeri. I hope they will take the trouble to visit our community to hear the full story. They will be made most welcome. Shane Crowley, Old Warburton.

How the upgrade impacts your electricity supply As we start to install and test the technology, you may experience interruptions to your electricity supply. Planned outages are necessary to carry out the work safely. However, you may also experience the occasional unplanned outage as we integrate leading edge technology into the network for the first time. We would like to thank you in advance for your patience while we implement this important safety initiative.
We will do everything we can to make sure that any disruption is minimised.
Important safety information you should know Local residents and communities still need to ensure their Bushfire Plan is up to date and understood by everyone. While AusNet Services and the Victorian Government believe these upgrades to the network will make a real difference in reducing the risk of bushfires, it is important to note that the technology, known as Rapid Earth Fault Current Limiter (REFCL), does not eliminate all risk of bushfires from powerlines.

Sharing Aboriginal culture with kids
Gruyere property searched HICSA CEO Anne Jenkins, Cr Fiona McAllister, author Aunty Dot Peters, artist Miranda Madgwick and Aunty Dot's son, Andrew Peters. "It gives our kids and the wider community an appreciation of our cultural heritage. "The book will shape the way we view Badger Creek." The Eastern Community Legal Centre sponsored lunch at a launch for the book held at the Healesville Indigenous Community Ser-

Dialogue in the shed By Kath Gannaway Members of Badger Creek Men's Shed are putting their skills to work to help inform sighted people on what it is like to live in the dark. They are working with Guide Dogs Victoria to build two props for their Dialogue in the Dark experience at Docklands. In a role reversal, visitors are led through a space that is in total darkness where they learn to interact and communicate by relying on non-visual senses. With a low vision or blind guide by their side, sighted people are removed from their familiar world to become reliant on their guide to provide security and orientation as they travel through a world without imagery. "In this setting, guides open each attendee's eyes to show them that the world of low vision is in no way poorer - only a different way to experience an environment," GDV explains on its www.guidedogsvictoria.com.au/get-involved/dialogue-in-the-dark . Men's Shed president Mario Herodotus and member Jim Bray are on the team working on the project which involves working from designs provided by GDV for what they would only described as "like a puzzle".
Jim Bray is taking his cue from the ''secret'' design. 183923 "We don't want to give anything away," Mario said. To find out exactly what role the finished items play in the Dialogue in the Dark experience means venturing into the darkness. Jim said the team was pleased to have the opportunity to help. "It's a project that you care about specifically because it is for Guide Dogs," he said.

A new 170-room, six-storey hotel is set to rise from a former petrol station site in Lilydale. Barnes Capital director Martyn Barnes said the complex proposed for 487 Maroondah Highway would open in 2021 under IHG's voco label. The Mail understands the project does not yet have council approval and the land includes commercial and green wedge zoning. Mr Barnes said the "quirky" design would have the hotel building rise to six storeys at one end and taper to one storey at the other. He's proposed 20 cabins in addition to the 170 hotel rooms, an on-site gin distillery, a lavender farm, mirrored maze, an amphitheatre cut from natural ground, and a provedore to serve and sell Yarra Valley produce. Plans also include a large conference and meeting facilities, a gym, bars, an on-site family restaurant and kids' entertainment facilities. "As one of Australia's premier wine regions, the last thing people want when they arrive in Yarra Valley is a vanilla experience," Mr Barnes said. IHG has 48 other hotels in Australia under four brands: InterContinental, Crowne Plaza, Holiday Inn and Holiday Inn Express.

"You feel that you're doing something which is useful, but at the same time is not taking a job away from someone who makes a living from this type of thing. Mario said the Men's Shed was donating their time and the materials and the fact that the Dialogue in the Dark experience also produces funds for GDV was something they also appreciated about the project.
Police are investigating after a car was hit by a falling tree in Lilydale at 11am on 10 August. It is believed the maroon Holden Commodore sedan was driving west on Warburton Highway when a tree fell across the roadway and onto the car about 11am. The 33-year-old male driver and sole occupant of the car, from Wandin North, died at the scene. The exact circumstances surrounding the collision are yet to be determined. Anyone who witnessed the collision is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report online at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au

A new children's book will share and celebrate Wurundjeri history, spirituality and culture. Aboriginal reconciliation advocate and author Aunty Dot Peters launched a version of The Way Bunjil Flies for children aged five years and under on Wednesday 8 August. The book is set in Healesville and share the story of Bunjil, the spiritual totem of the Wurundjeri people. "This book will play a role in building cultural pride within families and communities and will promote reading within the Aboriginal and broader community," Aunty Dot said. Yarra Ranges Councillor Fiona McAllister said it was vital that the Yarra Ranges community continued to share Aboriginal stories. "There is a great need for more children's books that provide information specific to Wurundjeri history," she said. "We need to continue to teach young children to understand and respect Aboriginal culture, to learn local stories, and for all children to embrace and be proud of Aboriginal history." Wurundjeri elder Aunty Kim Wandin said the illustrations allowed children to enter the world of Bunjil and to use their imagination. "By sharing this story we are being taken on a cultural journey to preserve moral values," she said.

It's also important to make sure that trans fats, artificial colours, preservatives and food additives are avoided since they are pro-inflammatory and will affect concentration. Certainly, there can be other issues like malabsorption, leaky gut, nutrient deficiency and toxicity that may be present, and this should be assessed by a qualified heath practitioner. One in five school-aged children has a learning difficulty. This can be stressful for families and teachers but there is great potential with using a holistic approach. Poor attention span, brain fog, hyperactivity and poor short term memory are signs that the brain is struggling. When a child's brain is healthy, learning follows natural curiosity. A child can settle into reading a book or completing a craft project with little frustration or restlessness. This means more peace at home, in the playground and within the child. If there is tension in the mind there will usually be tension in the body.

Documentary makers are calling for people who've spotted big cats in the Aussie bush. On average, a big cat sighting has been reported every day in Australia over the past two years, producers of The Hunt said. "Panthers and pumas are alive and well in the Australian bush and big cat expert Vaughan King is on a quest to prove it," they said. "A recent research trip has uncovered some exciting new DNA, however there is still more work to be done and he needs your help!" Report sightings from the past two months to bigcats.com.au and King will investigate, filming along the way. "We don't intend to hurt these animals, we only want to see them protected and proven once and for all."

CFA Chief Executive Officer, Paul Smith said, "CFA is supportive of the bushfire mitigation measures proposed for Haining Farm and welcomes the significant investment from the state government to implement these measures before revegetation is established. "CFA is pleased that Parks Victoria will ensure that these measures are monitored and maintained for the life of the Farm." Yarra Ranges Mayor, Cr Len Cox said, "Council welcomes the State Government investment in Haining Farm to enhance the site for local access, tourism and habitat for the state emblems." The funding announcement coincides with the DELWP's release of the Haining Farm Bushfire Mitigation Measures report, which is supported and endorsed by the CFA and Parks Victoria. He attended the River of Light Festival in Warburton on Saturday 5 August. "Ned is reported to have said he had no time for 'bricks and mortar' banks these days (other than the Bendigo Bank in Warburton which he uses for his royalty payments)," the anonymous letter said. "Ned has resisted the temptation to use a secret Swiss account for his ever-increasing private fortune - contrary to advice given by his financial advisor. "With the wisdom of many years on the run and many successful bank robberies, he now finds the river bank the only bank worth exploring.

"Excuse me," a woman standing in line behind paramedics at a Yarra Ranges post office said, "thank you for what you do, do you a great job." The two paramedics returned a heart-felt thanks for her appreciation. Meanwhile, on Facebook, there was news that a very different kind of petrol bandit had struck at Caltex Lilydale. A woman reached out to thank the lady who paid for her petrol. "As you walked out the door you said 'have a nice day'," she wrote. "I thought you were talking to the cashier. "I go to pay for my petrol and you had already done it. "Your act of kindness bought me to tears. I thank you from the bottom of my heart. The Victorian Government has committed $670,000 to implement bushfire mitigation measures at Haining Farm in Don Valley. The funding is in addition to an ongoing $50,000 per annum maintenance commitment and will be used to establish a number of bushfire mitigation measures, including: a 20 metre fuel break around the area boundary; an internal track network to make the site easily accessible to emergency response vehicles; additional water points, and; an open woodland buffer. Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) Regional Director, Kelly Crosthwaite said the funding gives assurance to adjoining landholders and community in the area that all the necessary precautions are being undertaken to ensure there will be no increase in bushfire risk from the revegetation at Haining Farm. "Community safety has always been put first, above all objectives, in the redevelopment of Haining Farm. This funding is an assurance to the local community that the Victorian Government has a long-term commitment to the success and safety of Haining Farm." Ms Crosthwaite said the redevelopment of Haining Farm was an important component of the Victorian Government's commitment to establish the Yellingbo Conservation Area to conserve biodiversity, improve water quality, improve public land management across the landscape, and provide a recreation space for generations of Victorians to enjoy. Following the release of the Haining Farm Concept Plan by DELWP and Parks Victoria in September 2017, Parks Victoria is now under-

Maurie’s heart of a Lion By Kath Gannaway It came as no surprise to anyone that the songs and poem chosen to farewell Healesville's Maurie Gray were 'Love and Marriage', his and Mary's wedding song, the Richmond theme song, and 'Gone Fishin'. They topped and tailed a reflection of a life in which these things were important; but there was a whole lot more in between. Maurie was remembered as a man who loved his family and served his community. The youngest of Edith and Arthur Gray's four children, Peter Maurice Gray was born at Lilydale Bush Nursing Hospital on 11 December, 1930, and grew up with his brothers and sisters, Phil, Beryl and Bob. The family moved from Yarra Glen to Healesville when he was four and he went to Healesville State School, leaving at 14 after obtaining his Merit Certificate. His father worked for the MMBW and for Maurie that meant a leave-pass to fish in Maroondah Dam. Hitching a ride to school on the butcher's buggy was not only fun, as it turned out, it was a forerunner of the career he followed for most of his life. He had a number of jobs starting while he was still at school and including packing groceries, cleaning out chook pens, packing timber, working with the blacksmith at the dam, at a shoe factory and at Alec Christie Butchers. That job included delivering the meat on a horse and cart ... very possibly including the same round he travelled as a boy! In 1954 he was head-hunted to work in Sam Baird's new butcher shop and later bought the business which he ran for the next 32 years. It was an exciting couple of years for young Maurie. He met the love of his life, Healesville bank clerk Mary Richardson, in 1955 at the popular Mayfair Cafe and they married on the 12 of May at the local Methodist Church.
"We had 62 wonderful years ... you couldn't ask more than that," Mary said reflecting on their time together. The next era started with the birth of Russell in 1959, followed by Peter in 1961, when he also signed on as a charter member of the Lions Club of Healesville. Brian was born the next year and Cathy in 1963. When the doors closed around noon on Saturday, it was off to Eildon Weir with the family and friends for camping and fishing. Sport was a big part of his early life too. He played cricket with the Yumbunga Cricket Club in Chum Creek for a couple of years and played in the '51 and '54 premierships with Healesville Football Club. He enjoyed his footy as a supporter of both the Richmond Tigers and the Healesville Bloods and of his boys and grandchildren when they took up footy. Lion Bert Bresser spoke of his contribution to Lions as president and treasurer, as District Governor and national co-ordinator of the Lions Christmas Cake operation. He worked on projects including the Senior Citizens Club Rooms and the Maroondah Retirement Village, the Lions Picnic Area and revegetation of Coronation Park. Lion Elaine Dossor also paid tribute with a poem 'To Lion Maurie' which concluded "Our friend and dedicated Lion in heart, but now a Lion at large". Maurie enjoyed good health up until the last year or so and there was some consolation in the fact that he never lost his sense of humour and was alert to the end. Maurie died on 14 July, 2018. He will be missed by his many friends and Lions colleagues, and most of all by his loving family including daughters and son in law, nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren all of whom have a powerful and enduring legacy on which to draw.
Maurie was a popular Healesville butcher for 32 years.

The Memo, Healesville
Healesville High School is gearing up for another blockbuster production with Rock of Ages set to rock the Ion Whykes Performing Arts Centre from 23 to 25 August. The show, a 'must see' for anyone who lived through the '80s, is great entertainment for all ages. It's the tail end of the big, bad 1980s in Hollywood, and the party has been raging hard. Aqua Net, Lycra, Heavy Metal flow freely at one of the Sunset Strip's last legendary venues, a place where legendary rocker Stacee Jaxx takes the stage and groupies line up for their chance at an autograph.
Amidst the madness, aspiring rock star (and resident toilet cleaner) Drew longs to take the stage as the next big thing (and longs for small-town girl Sherri, fresh off the bus from Kansas with stars in her eyes). But the rock and roll fairy-tale is about to end when German developers sweep into town with plans to turn the fabled Strip into just another capitalist strip mall. Can Drew, Sherri and the gang save the strip -- and themselves -- before it's too late? Only the music of hit bands Styx, Journey, Bon Jovi, Whitesnake and more hold the answer. Rock of Ages follows a well-established tradition at Healesville High of high energy, high quality productions which provide a platform for developing and showcasing talents including music, singing, acting, lighting, set production and promotion ... and providing great entertainment for the school and wider community. Shows are on 23, 24 and 25 August at 7pm. Book tickets at https://www.facebook.com/ events/354637005054480/ or phone the High School on 5962 4088 for more information.

CELEBRATING HOLMWOOD'S NEW EXTENSION
Celebrating care for aged Holmwood Aged Care has been providing care and accommodation to the local community for nearly 40 years and now has a brand new extension. The extension opened on Monday 6 August and can easily accommodate an additional 40 residents in comfort and style. The new facilities have taken over 18 months to build and adjoins the existing home. The extension is split level with residential rooms and living on the upper level offering views of distance mature trees. The new building has been designed to encompass indoor-outdoor living so that residents can continue to enjoy the country surrounds. A key feature is the expansive outdoor terrace with seating. The building is set amongst neighbouring trees and there is a walking path. The high ceilings and large glass windows overlooking the terrace help to create a sense of openness, space and flow through the home. The central coffee hub provides a meeting point for residents and their family and friends to enjoy a cuppa and chat. The new residential rooms include a private ensuite bathroom, flat screen TV, built in wardrobe and face either a landscaped courtyard or gardens. Most of the rooms have their own outdoor patio area. There is a choice of single or double rooms so couples can stay together. There is also an impressive new entrance with a gas fire, a hairdressing salon, lounge and dining area, private dining room, coffee hub, activities room, separate sitting area, landscaped courtyard and an expansive outdoor terrace. SPACE APLENTY IN FABULOUS FAMILY HOME WITH a location that’s hard to beat, along with impeccable presentation, this wonderful home and it’s many features will surely impress you. Only a short stroll to Yarra Junction, this home offers heaps of room for the whole family with not one, not two, but three living areas. So, there’s space for everyone to have a little ‘chill out time’, for the kids to set up the Xbox, or even to be able watch the footy, or dare I say it ‘The Bold and the Beautiful’ in peace and quiet. Having said that, this home flows beautifully, and encourages family interaction and fun times. Being only one and a half years old, you’re getting all the good stuff: natural gas ducted heating, evaporative cooling, generous sized pretty much everything, including kitchen with stainless-steel 900mm oven and range hood, walk-in pantry, spacious laundry along with a double garage and then more off-street parking. Probably one of the favourite things about this place is the low maintenance gardens - a lovely little suntrap, and room for the barbecue, but there’s no mowing lawns every weekend here. Plus, you back onto an easement - perfect and safe for kicking the footy or a game of cricket. ●

Tribute song for veterans By Kath Gannaway Vietnam veterans were honoured with a tribute song written and performed for the first time in public by the Dandenong Ranges Music Council as part of Vietnam Veterans Day commemorations in Lilydale on Sunday 12 August. Forgotten Heroes, written by Cath Russell and Peter de Ryk, has a chorus that speaks of the experience and the legacy of the young men who were called to fight in Vietnam, reflecting much of what the day was about. “And you gotta understand They dragged us through a fire Burned innocence from our eyes Boys never came back And you gotta understand Who we were when we came back And who we are now Forgotten Heroes.” The song followed the DRMC's Bells of Peace project, which paid tribute to World War I veterans. “The Vietnam Veterans said ‘it’s great, but what about us?’,” DRMC's Bev McAllister said. Over four workshops with the veterans involving intense conversations about their time before, during and after the war, the song was written. Lilydale RSL hosted Vietnam Veterans Day this year, with the veterans marching to the Lilydale Cenotaph. Guest speaker, Major Kenneth Mackenzie OAM (Rtd), spoke of the battles and loss of life in Vietnam, the treatment of veterans back home throughout the war and on their return, and of the political environment of the day. “Like our fathers and grandfathers before us, we have not forgotten who we are or why we are here today,” he said. “Each and every one of you can be enor-

Top three locks in solidly By Cameron Hutchison AFL Yarra Ranges There are three rounds to go in Division 1 and it looks like Olinda, Woori Yallock and Upwey are set in the top three. Wandin could make it interesting sitting only one game behind in fourth, while Mount Evelyn, Healesville and Monbulk are all a chance for fifth spot. With two rounds to go in Division 2, Seville and Yarra Glen appear safe in first and second. Yarra Junction should stay in third and Gembrook should hang onto fourth. It will come down to Alexandra, Yea and Powelltown for fifth spot, with Powelltown and Yea both still to have their second bye and to play Gembrook. In Division 1 A-grade netball, Olinda, Belgrave, Woori Yallock and Wandin are playing finals but in what order they’ll finish is still open. The real interest lies with Warburton, Monbulk and Mount Evelyn vying for fifth spot. In Division 2 A-grade netball, Kinglake, Yea and Seville are the major contenders. Yarra Junction is safe in fourth but the battle is on between Yarra Glen, Powelltown and Alexandra for fifth, and Yarra Glen and Powelltown still each have a bye. A big congratulations goes to Mount Evelyn for back-to-back premierships in the veterans competition. They defeated Healesville 6.6.42 to 4.6.30. Division 1 Seniors Football (Round 15) Emerald 14.16.100 d Belgrave 1.7.13 Emerald best: J. Marshall, S. Kelleher, L. Sheppard, N. Jansen, C. Thomsen, J. Webb (2 goals). Belgrave best: C. Power, C. They maintained the pressure in the second and led by 40 points at half time. A big six goals to one in the third quarter and it was all over. Warburton won the last quarter by one point but lost the game by 75. Mount Evelyn best: R. Fooks, A. Chalkley (2 goals), J. Beamish (1 goal), T. Chalkley, T. Hallett-Tauali I (3 goals) J. Fellows. Warburton Golf Club’s competition on Wednesday 8 August was stableford. Having just returned from a stint overseas it was not surprising to see rain and soggy conditions for golf at the mid-week game. Nevertheless, 16 hardy souls (I was NOT one of them!) took to the course with the intent of besting their handicap. Only one member did, which means Neil Leckenby, with 37 hard-earned points, won the day. Neil has a very impressive “wet-weather“ record, which surprises no-one - he is, after all, a Scotsman. Andrew McMath at least “matched“ his handicap to snare the runner-up prize on 36. Balls extended to 34. Nearest the pins was taken out by Peter Fox on the third, and Captain Cross’s day was not wasted as he snared both the ninth and the tenth (on his second shot in). The Saturday 11 August contest was also stableford and it was another wet day, with heavy conditions underfoot keeping the field small. Tuesday, 14 August, 2018

Women’s footy kicking on Healesville Football Netball Club is latest AFL Yarra Ranges club to back senior women's football. The club is holding its first Come and Try Day for women between 18 and 40 at their Don Road grounds on Sunday, 19 August. It heralds an introduction to women's football for the club which this year celebrates 130 years in the game. Club president Greg Hay said the time was right. "The time has come to get this set up," he said. "We know that women have been playing in other areas for years but now's the time to come back and play for the hometown," he said. Greg said the club plans to bring all its efforts to support the women's team, with its history in supporting football development in the community. "It's been great seeing the incredible rise in girls' football. We are seeing young girls now who could be drafted to AFLW and we're keen to make sure that the first time they play at seniors level it is in Healesville," he said. Senior netballer, Ali Bryan, says the opportunity for women to play has been a long time coming. "Girls' football was something that I always looked forward to each year at high school, and going up to play in Darwin just made me love it even more," she said. "It's been a long time coming and is an exciting opportunity for girls to be able to play for their home town instead of travelling down the line to find a team. "The whole club is really getting around the idea and are excited to have a women's team joining their ranks. I'm really looking forward to getting the team up and running and creating a positive and supportive outlet where women can have a bit of fun while getting some physical activity into their day". Josette O'Donnell will be part of the team. The Badger Creek resident and mum of two
Charlie Warren, Tayla Pinkster, Josette O'Donnell and Ali Bryan are looking for women keen to join the ranks of Bloods football. boys said she can't wait. "If you were like me, an '80s child, footy just wasn't on the agenda," she said. "I used to wrestle my brother and it was strongly discouraged. Now I think I should have been directed to football ... I think I would have loved it as a kid. "I may be 38, but I think it's not too late for me to give it a go. "I'm stoked that the Bloods are keen to get
it happening and after watching it for years I'm looking forward to being on the field, playing it instead of just looking on." Women between 18 and 40 are encouraged to go along to the Come and Try Day. "You'll have the chance to hear from local players what it's like, to practise some footy skills such as handballing and marking, and get some tips on fitness for 2018 to be ready for the 2019 season," Josette said.

"This has got to be one of the best ways to get fit, have fun and meet a bunch of new women in town." She said the plan was to hold more Come and Try Days at the end of this football season and start training over summer. If you are keen to give it a try get in touch with the club on facebook, email Josette O'Donnell on josettemaree@hotmail.com or phone Greg Hay on 0408 370 815.

MOTORING
TRIP: the ambo’s story By Kath Gannaway Mobile Intensive Care Paramedic Jason Callanan's contribution to the fifth Teenage Road Information Program (TRIP) at Woori Yallock on Wednesday, 1 August, was a reality check. Walking among the 500 or so people, and with the sort of crash image you can see most nights on the news up on a screen at the front of the room, he told of what it's like at a crash scene, and gave an insight into the consequences for the people involved. TRIP is a combined response by Yarra Val-
ley emergency services - CFA, SES, Police and Ambulance to the tragic loss of young lives on Yarra Ranges' roads. The target audience is 16 to 25 year-olds and their parents, and there are no apologies for telling it as it is. "I'm not going to cotton-wool it," he said introducing himself as a paramedic who had "never been to an accident". "I have never been to one accident but I have been to hundreds of crashes," he said. "Every one I've been to, there has been a reason." He added ... "You can get up and
walk out ... there's no harm in doing that." No-one did. There were eight people in the car. Four were trapped and four thrown from the vehicle. Three were seriously injured, four relatively OK and one, the driver, was expected to die. "When I looked at them, so heavily trapped, I said in my head 'sorry, you're going to die'. "I'm going to treat everyone else and if you're still alive when I get back to you, say half an hour, 45 minutes later, then we will treat you. "That's triage; unfortunately that's the way we work in these cases," he said. He spoke of the resources that crash involved. - two MICA units (4 MICA Paramedics, 4 Advanced care ambulances (8 paramedics) 3 fire Units (7fire fighters) 3 police units (5 police officers) just for the first initial response. "What are the consequences for you," he said nodding to a person in the audience. "Your brother who is short of breath having an asthma attack, we can't get to him in time because we're dealing with this. To another. "You're baby sister who has croup, we can't get to her in time," and another, "Your mum or dad who has chest pain, or could be having a stroke, we can't get to them either, because we're dealing with this; and it's something that could have been avoided." There's a weary, matter-of-fact tone in his voice that says this is not a rare experience for paramedics. Then he talks about the injuries and the repercussions. A fatality gets headlines in real time and often for years as it goes through court, but injuries that can destroy lives and cost millions of
dollars, tend not to make the news. "First the girl in the passenger seat. She was standing up in the front seat screaming. We tried to treat her and she is punching; had serious concussion but she's still screaming because she's broken both ankles and she's standing on them; all her weight is on her legs." Punctured lungs, head injuries, fractured pelvises, lacerated, livers, ruptured spleens that's another passenger. Amputated toe, ruptured spleen, lacerated liver, broken neck and a perforated bowel. "She was ejected from the car," Jason says. He explains with no 'cotton wooling' what that means to have your poo leaching into your stomach. The girl underneath the car - the driver her injuries included most of the above and a spinal injury that left her in a wheelchair. "The consequences for her are a criminal record, she can't do what she wants to do, she lives in a nursing home, she needs a team of people to get her around ... right down to the fact that she needs someone to wipe her bum for her," Jason lays it on the line. "How would you like to have someone have to do that for you, or you to have to do that for someone in your family? "Simply because she made a mistake of getting in that car ... the wrong decision." "Any questions?" he asks. There are none. Jason also provides this talk among other challenging subjects to high school students through his program called ROADWhyz Victoria.
