Traffic congestion Streeton Way, Berwick and Soldiers Road roadabout. 183809 12392692-LN28-18

Our suburban arterials are woefully inadequate for the volume of traffic trying to take advantage of the new Monash lanes and speed limits. And there are few workable alternative routes for when the Monash is out of action. A recent crash on the Monash near Beaconsfield brought Melbourne-bound traffic to a stop, while outbound traffic came to a crawl as motorists slowed to cop a look at the wreckage. There is much work to be done. And we want your help in pushing government to commit to prioritising works in the South Eastern growth areas, where some of Australia’s fastest growing suburbs and municipalities are located. In the lead-up to the State Election on 24 November, we’re asking you to list the roads you consider the most congested in the South East. We intend to share your pain with the parties and contenders vying for your vote and ask what they intend to do about it. Each and every week until the election we’re going to share your stories, ask the hard questions of government, the parties and the candidates, and then share their responses with you. The South East needs a better deal on roads, deserves a better deal and must get proper and appropriate financial commitments from those who seek power in your name. We’ll do our best to find out what’s on offer, and your votes can help seal the deal. Turn to pages 4-5 for more.

In July, the State Government proudly trumpeted that the Monash was open for business - all lanes on the $400m revamp open and speeds were back to 100km/h … you could have been forgiven for thinking all our transport woes were solved. But ask any commuter in the South East who relies on access to the Monash, who weaves their way through suburban ratruns, cramped side streets and traffic bottlenecks to either start or end their daily commute or who try to get their kids dropped off or picked up at school times … the work on fixing our roads is far from finished. Congested feeder roads and side streets waste hours - and collectively, years - of people’s lives each week in an issue that has long been identified as critical to the productivity and prosperity of workers and businesses alike. Each working day in the South East, the stress is written afresh on the faces of thousands of annoyed and helpless drivers. In Pakenham, recent freeway works to install on-ramp signals has meant traffic in the morning peak is now banked up along Cardinia and McGregor roads - back to the Princes Highway at times - as commuters queue to await their turn at the lights. The on-ramp lights are an added frustration to motorists already fed up with having to negotiate the level crossings on those roads - a situation that is bound to get worse when the Metro Trains marshalling yards at Pakenham East are opened. Around Berwick and Cranbourne, roads which were built many decades ago and that were suited to orchards, market gardens, horse paddocks and hobby farming, are now asked to handle traffic from ever-expanding housing estates. Narrow, bordered by power lines and drains and the scenes of frequent accidents, roads like Clyde Road have been shamefully neglected in the haste for urban expansion. While in Lyndhurst, the increasing number of motorists on their daily commute means speeds along the ever-busy Thompsons Road drop to almost a third of normal travel speeds in peak times. Nearby Pound Road is little better.

IN BRIEF Helping those most vulnerable A successful suicide prevention program will be rolled out at Casey Hospital. Cranbourne MP Jude Perera announced on Tuesday 14 July the State Government's successful Hospital Outreach Post-suicidal Engagement (HOPE) initiative would be expanded to six new hospital and health service sites, including Casey Hospital. The HOPE initiative provides practical support and follow up for people leaving hospital after a suicide attempt. Assertive outreach workers also work with families, friends and carers so they can better support their loved one during this critical time. Mr Perera said "The HOPE program has already helped hundreds of Victorians who have attempted suicide and need an intensive response in the months following, which we know can be a period of heightened risk."

these kinds of offences are a priority for us and we have been putting a lot of resources into this operation," said D/ Insp Pannell. "We know these kinds of incidents can be a terrifying experience for anyone, which is why when they do occur we commit all of our efforts into identifying and arresting offenders. Casey cracks down on tobacco retailers The City of Casey has caught six tobacco retailers selling cigarettes to minors (a person under 18 years), as part of a test purchasing program undertaken by council's Environmental Health Team. These results are a substantial increase compared to previous years, with two sales recorded in 2017 and three sales in 2016. Retailers and person's selling tobacco to a minor who are found to be breaking the law risk receiving infringements ranging from $645 to $9671, prosecution in a magistrates court and/or a fine ranging from $19,343 to $96,714 and the loss of their right to sell tobacco. City of Casey Mayor Councillor Geoff Ablett said that council's Environmental Health Officers undertake routine tobacco test purchasing across the municipality, specifically targeting tobacco licenced premises and other venues to ensure strict compliance with the Tobacco Act 1987. "It is important to build an awareness with

our retailers, so they understand that not only is selling cigarettes to a minor breaking the law, but also that eight out of ten new smokers start as a child and are fifteen times more likely to die of lung cancer than non-smokers," Mr Ablett said. "All that retailers have to do to comply with the act is to ask a person for proof of age before selling to someone. "We were pleased to find that 13 retailers

approached during the program did not sell cigarettes to minors and were compliant with the act." Tobacco retailers are encouraged to review the tobacco retailers guide and resources available on the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) tobacco reform website to ensure they are aware of their responsibilities when selling tobacco in Victoria. People concerned about retailers selling to minors should contact council on 9705 5200 or the DHHS Tobacco Information Line on 1300 136 775. Information on tobacco laws is available at www.health.vic.gov.au/tobaccoreforms. DHHS provide funding to councils, via the Municipal Association of Victoria for this program. The Tobacco Test Purchasing Program is conducted by council's Environmental Health Services contractor, Kernow Environmental Services P/L.

Chaotic on Clyde Road By Jessica Anstice Clyde Road has been causing more and more headaches as time goes by with the terrible traffic congestion causing people to run late for work, appointments and school drop offs. Cybera Digital's manager of Projects and Marketing Michael Machado travels from Lang Lang to for work every day, along Clyde Road. "Every morning this week I have been late into the office because of the traffic on Clyde Road and I've definitely noticed it's gotten worse over the last few months," Mr Machado said. It usually takes Mr Machado around 35 minutes to get into work during peak time, for the last few weeks it has taken closer to 45/50 minutes, sometimes even an hour on a bad day. "Compared to during the day this is pretty bad. If I was to leave the office at around lunchtime when there is a lot less traffic, I can make it home in less than half an hour," he said. "Clyde Road seriously affects travel times. I usually work 8am to 4pm and I have to drop my son off at kinder on the way into work. "If I get to Clyde Road at around 8am, I fully expect that from Eden Rise onwards will add another 15 or 20 minutes to my journey. "It's just as bad on the way home too and I have often been reprimanded by my son's kinder for collecting him past the cut off time due to being stuck in traffic on Clyde Road." Mr Machado said he has tried a couple of alternate routes and some make a difference, some don't. "The main issues for me are that now that they have implemented the ramp signals to access the freeway, it builds up the traffic even more because you have access from Clyde Road in both directions. "I'm not sure what can be done to ease the congestion, perhaps adding another lane to

Berwick resident Matt McMaster is tired of the traffic along Clyde Road. He is pictured with his daughter Paige. 183935 Clyde Road, but this will obviously take time and money and is not a time-friendly solution. "It definitely has an impact on my other employees too, some of which live a 10 minute drive away." Mr Machado said it impacts his business somewhat as they have clients coming in for meetings and they have trouble accessing the building because of the traffic build up, result-

ing in them being late for appointments. John Batty, manager at Burdens Bathrooms said Clyde Road is effecting his businesses delivery times. "I have delivery drivers that go up and down Clyde Road every day and some days we have to add half an hour travel time to get out on time," he said. "We get deliveries banking up and I have

customers coming in store to buy things and when they get here they say, "It's taken me half an hour to get from the Princess Highway to here." It adds up. "It's madness, the train lines, there are way too many traffic lights, and being the biggest growing corridor of South East corridors, there is only one way in and one way out." Mr Batty lives in Berwick Springs, not even five kilometres from his work. He starts work at 6.30am, missing the morning rush. However he finishes at 5pm, which means he cops the worst of the traffic. It takes Mr Batty five minutes to get to work and to get home; it can take him up to 20 minutes. "Lots of us here at Burdens leave here at 5pm. One colleague lives in Cranbourne South and says Clyde Road needs to have double lanes all the way through to South Gippsland Highway," Mr Batty said. "People say it's the biggest growing housing corridor in the world and something needs to be done to take some congestion off this road. "The government needs to act now." Paul Williams commented on the Berwick Star News Facebook page, "Clyde Road is a no go zone from 8am until 9.30am and then from 3.30pm to 6pm." Berwick resident Kim Manson works on the corner of Clyde Road and Landmore Lane and lives four and a half kilometres from her work. "In peak hour, it's actually quicker for me to ride my bike to work rather than drive," Ms Manson said. "It takes about 20 minutes to drive the four and a half kilometres down Clyde Road." Another Berwick resident, Matt McMaster said, ""I prefer to take a one hour train ride to work rather than drive into the city. "I avoid Clyde Road whenever I can."

Need for flow on Greaves Road

Have your say on the state of local roads

By Jessica Anstice Greaves Road in Berwick during peak times is ruining neighbourhoods and preventing residents from leaving their homes due to heavy traffic congestion. John Batty works as the manager at Burdens Bathrooms, situated on Clyde Road, on the north side of the Monash Freeway. "To get home from work I turn right off Clyde Road onto Greaves Road," Mr Batty said. "Once I get home from work, I won't go back out until 7.30pm as traffic banks up along Greaves Road and it takes four or five sets of traffic lights before getting to Eden Rise. "The proposal for an on and off ramp for the Beaconsfield roundabout, that's going to come around the back of Kingsmere Estate and hook up to O'Shea Road will bring more traffic to Clyde Road and Soldiers Road." Mr Batty said the government needs to act now as Casey is the biggest growing housing corridor in the world. "They need to get rid of the level crossing," he said. "From Dandenong to Pakenham, we're still suffering with level crossing all the way through." At the beginning of March, City of Casey welcomed a VCAT order granting a permit for the construction of the Greaves Road roundabout. The development will upgrade the existing roundabout at the intersection of Greaves Road, Narre Warren South and Berwick Springs Promenade to accommodate increased traffic flows. The roundabout and associated works are integral to the upgrade of Greaves Road, allowing

for Vicroads to assume control of the road in the future and upgrade it to a four lane arterial road. As part of the roundabout construction, the Berwick Springs Estate entry feature will be relocated further south to accommodate the roundabout and associated works. City of Casey Mayor Cr Geoff Ablett said the current small scale roundabout at the entry to Berwick Springs estate was always intended to be an interim arrangement until the duplication of Greaves Road was scheduled to commence. "The installation of this larger roundabout will work to reduce traffic congestion for both Berwick Springs residents and the broader City of Casey commuters", he said.

"As a council we were aware of the community's attachment to the bluestone entry walls and we investigated the option of having the roundabout relocated further north to avoid impacting upon the entry, however it was deemed to not be a feasible option. "In June 2017, council held an information session that enabled residents to view the application document and interact with Council officers and representatives from Vicroads, Melbourne Water, the Victorian Planning Authority and the developer. "The proposal for the entrance will ensure that it is replicated and continues to comprise of two bluestone tiers and the planting of new oak trees to replace the boulevard canopy."

We’re asking for your help in getting local roads congestion on the agenda for this year’s State Election. A special poll is now open where you can nominate the worst congested road in your region. Visit starcommunity.com.au/competitions/ and then click on the link for ’Unblock the Gridlock’. In a few weeks, we’ll be compiling lists of the most congested roads and then asking you to vote for the one that needs fixing most urgently in your area. These lists will be put to the politicians and candidates and their responses printed in the paper before the election in November. Be sure to check out the poll, and if your nightmare road has not been listed here’s your chance to update the list. Keep an eye on our social media pages on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, too - we’ll be giving you as many chances as possible to nominate those roads. The South East deserves a better deal on roads, so make your voice heard.

SOCIALLY SPEAKING On the 13 August the Cranbourne Star News Facebook page shared a story about a Sudanese family celebrating the purchase of their very first home in Clyde North, thanks to the generosity of a joint partnership between the Jireh Foundation and the Bendigo Bank. Here is how some readers reacted online: Elizabeth Cooper: How wonderful what a great achievement Congratulations wishing them much love and happiness in their new home, their very own little piece of Australia Chantelle Renae: Happy for them all. Would love to see Bendigo Bank and all others involved contribute the same amount of money to our veterans who gave their all and receive little to nothing in return. Or maybe our farmers who are struggling and only being given a piddling loan of $12k from good ol' Turncoat. Hayley Iring: Awwww bless look how happy your children are. Mark Mathews: Good luck to them! And congrats. Mark Mathews: They have been here 12 years. I am guessing they work and have been saving also. And the grant has assisted them in getting into the house. I am guessing they also have to repay this money back to the church. Anyway as long as they are decent people which they look it from the photo and law abiding who really cares if the church assisted them? All everyone is worried about is what's in it for me? Why can't I get it? Which is sad really. Tammie Mckill: Good luck to them I wish them all the best. Is this purely just for the African community or can anybody apply? berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au

Children at risk By Jessica Anstice Berwick Chase Primary School currently has 888 students and even with new schools in the pipeline, the school is predicted to grow for the next few years. "We encourage our students to walk, ride and scoot to school where appropriate," principal Chris Short said. "As part of this commitment the school has allowed school children to enter and exit the rear of the school adjacent to Bernly Boulevard." The land between the school and the road is currently owned by the developer who is scheduled to hand the land over to the council shortly. "We have been working with the developer to put bollards in to ensure cars are parked appropriately along Bernly Boulevard," he said. "Initially they agreed that this was required and made a commitment to install the bollards. "In our most recent correspondence they informed us that City of Casey council had informed them that the instillation of the bollards is still required however it was not a priority as this was not integral to the council's plans." The developer now has 12 months to install the bollards. "We were also informed that in council's opinion there was no official gate so the fence would be re-instated and students would no longer be able to exit through the back of the school," Mr Short said. "When the developer asked on our behalf about the school's request to put in a gravel path for all weather access the developer was told that this is not in the plans and would not be approved." School council member Matt McMaster said it is a huge safety concern as parents are

Narre Warren South MP Judith Couacaud Graley MP has asked the minister for the prevention of family violence to meet with Casey Council to discuss what can be done locally to address family violence. The City of Casey has reported the highest number of family violence incidents in Victoria for the past six years, with over 4700 incidents reported in Casey last year. In 2016, the Royal Commission into family violence made 227 recommendations to deal with family violence, 90 have already been implemented by the Andrews Labor Government. The report recommended the state government examine how local council performance measures can be used to encourage the prevention and response to family violence. Ms Graley also spoke in support of the Prevention of Family Violence Bill 2018 that will establish a new family violence prevention agency Respect Victoria. "Though we have taken great strides in creating a system that supports and protects victims of family violence, we still have a long way to go," Ms Couacaud Graley said. "We need a united approach from all levels of government working with local agencies and community groups to reduce family violence levels in the Casey area."

Inspiring science A visit from a leading brain cancer researcher from the CSIRO has inspired students in Hampton Park to pursue their dreams in the field of science. Dr Lars Esser, a postdoctoral research fellow at CSIRO, who works in the field of brain cancer theranostics in collaboration with Monash Biomedical Imaging, dropped in to Rivergum Primary School on Friday 10 August as part of CSIRO's STEM in schools event. The day formed part of National Science Week in helping schools celebrate careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Federal member for Holt Anthony Bryne

also visited Rivergum Primary to engage with students about STEM careers and to learn more about Dr Esser's research. "The students and I were privileged to hear from Dr Lars Esser about his important research work with Nanotechnology to help find a cure for Brain Cancer," said Mr Byrne.

"We wish Dr Esser every success with his research and hope he finds a cure to this life-threatening disease. Hopefully after this event more students will be encouraged to learn more about different types of STEM subjects, and exciting STEM careers that lie ahead."

Brothers are aces By Jessica Anstice Berwick Tennis Clubs Munyimani brothers, Mudiwa aged 12 and Maiti aged 10, have number one rankings both in Victoria and nationally in Australia for their year of birth. The brothers are home schooled by their parents to dedicate the time needed for training and development. They train for many hours and are often practising up at the courts. The Berwick senior club champion, Andrew Diakoff, has been mentoring and hitting with the boys who have been part of the club since 2011. "It has been such a pleasure to coach Mudi and Maita for the past six years," coach Lois Plowman said. "Their passion for the game, amazing skills and work ethic combined with the determination to succeed is very rare at such a young age. "It has been a privilege to be part of their tennis journey as the boys are a coach's dream, hard workers and respectful." Ms Plowman said he encourages the boys to follow their dreams, continue to work hard, remain humble and success will follow. A few months ago club membership officer Helen Stewart proposed to the committee to implement an Elite Player Support package for the boys. The support package is designed to provide financial, training and marketing support to any Berwick Tennis Club member who meets certain qualifying criteria. In presenting the Elite Player Support Packages to Mudi and Maita at the Berwick Tennis Club's Annual General meeting recently, club president, Shane Fielding said having two players at the club that have the potential of Mudi and Maita happens once in a lifetime. "The time commitment and cost to make it to the elite levels in tennis is enormous and the Berwick Tennis Club is extremely pleased

to provide the boys and their family with as much support as we can throughout this part of their journey," Mr Fielding said. The boys' accomplishments are astounding. Mudiwa is currently ranked 477th in the Australian Men's official Tennis Australia rankings. In last 12 months, Mudi's played singles and doubles in more than 25 Under 12 and Under 14 tournaments around Australia. In that time Mudi has won eight singles and five doubles titles, including winning the 12 and under boys singles title at the Australian Grass court championships in April this year and the U14 singles and both the U14 and U12 doubles titles at the 2018 Tasmanian State Championships a few weeks later. He has also been runner up in six singles and two doubles tournaments.

Maita is currently ranked 1123rd in the Australian Men's official Tennis Australia rankings. In the last 12 months, Maita's played singles and doubles in more than 25 Under 12 tournaments. In that time Maita has won one singles and two doubles titles, with big wins in singles at the IMG Discovery Open in April this year and taking out the 2018 Tasmanian State Championships Under 12 doubles title with his brother Mudi a few weeks later. He has also been runner up in one singles and three doubles tournaments. The boys also pair together to make a successful and formidable doubles team. Maita and Mudiwa said they enjoy tennis because it is a fun sport and they both like competing and making new friends.

An elected Liberal Nationals Government will contribute over $660,000 towards stage two of the redevelopment of Narre Warren Football and Netball Club. Stage two of the upgrade will consist of asphalting the perimeter of the car park and the completion and fitout of first floor meeting and committee rooms. Functions including presentation nights are held at other venues as the club cannot accommodate for all their members in the small rooms they currently have. These new rooms will allow for more functions to socialise and network between both parents and players. "Sporting clubs are the hub of any community," liberal candidate for Narre Warren North Vikki Fitzgerald said. "By providing Narre Warren Football and Netball Club the funding they deserve, all teams participating in the local league can benefit from using these upgrades, as they will provide a safe playing and working environment for players and club officials. "If I'm elected as the member for Narre Warren North, I will continue to keep working hard and delivering positive results for my community." "Vikki Fitzgerald has been doing extensive work with the local community to secure this upgrade for Narre Warren Football and Netball Club and has advocated strongly for this funding," leader of the opposition Matthew Guy said.

Empowering young people creatively

To find out more about the FReeZA program, visit youthcentral.vic.gov.au/freeza. FReeZA also funds The Push which is an independent youth music and event management organisation, which helps young people organise their own live events. Young people are encouraged to participate and perform in FReeZA events, but also to get involved behind the scenes to learn skills that may lead to employment in the arts and music industry.

Organising FReeZA activities has given hundreds of young Victorians the opportunity to develop their skills development and workplace experience, so they can go on to gain further employment or education qualifications in similar fields. "FReeZA is a great way for young people to get hands on experience in setting up events whether it be live music shows, BMX expos or art and short film competitions but also to celebrate their talent," minister for youth affairs Jenny Mikakos said.

Successful sleepout The Casey Homeless Sleepout was held on Saturday 11 August at Cranbourne Secondary College during National Homelessness Week. Despite the wild weather, over 130 participants came together to help raise awareness of homelessness in the City of Casey. The City of Casey has over 1280 people experiencing homelessness. The Walker Brothers entertained attendees and Uncle Shane Clark gave a very warm 'Welcome to Country'. Wayss general manager Doug Paroissien, Ermha CEO Karenza Louis-Smith and Cranbourne Information and Support Services executive officer Leanne Petrides each gave a snap shot of what it is like working with people experiencing homelessness. "The event had a great turnout, with rotary on hand to provide a sausage sizzle, Rapid Relief Truck provided sandwiches and water, Seikh Volunteers turned up with some tasty warm food, Cranbourne Lions Club provided a delicious warm breakfast and the Mobile Coffee Mission were there with much needed coffee and hot chocolates," councils connected communities manger Kate Sieh said. Over $2420 was raised on the night for Ermha and Wayys, in addition to donations of non-perishable food items for the local CISS and sanitary items to be donated to the Share the Dignity Campaign.

Young people in Casey are getting a helping hand to build their confidence and explore creative careers thanks to funding from the Andrews Labor Government. Spectrum Entertainment, with the City of Casey, will soon receive a grant of $72,000 over three years to empower and support young people with youth focussed music and cultural events and the opportunity for young people to work collaboratively with other organisations, to increase connectivity and generate positive images of young people within the community. Minister for Youth Affairs Jenny Mikakos announced 77 local government and community organisations from across Victoria will receive funding as part of the $7.2 million FReeZA program, to be delivered over three years. "Congratulations to Spectrum Entertainment for its successful application to this funding round of FReeZA and I look forward to seeing the program continue from strength to strength," Narre Warren North MP Luke Donnellan said. "Programs like FReeZA open up opportunities for young Victorians in different ways by building skills, creating jobs and supporting young musicians and artists perform in their local communities." More than 150,000 young people from across Victoria attend more than 400 FReeZA events every year. FReeZA is an innovative youth development program providing opportunities for young Victorians aged 12 to 25 to enjoy musical, cultural, recreational and artistic events that are drug, alcohol and smoke free.

Three everyday heroes have taken this year's Westfield Local Heroes program as nominated by the City of Casey community. Westfield Fountain Gate will award $10,000 grants apiece to three winners from each organisation on August 13. The winners were Sukhwinder Kaur from Sikh Volunteers Australia, Leanne Petrides of Cranbourne Information and Support Service (CISS) and Sylvia Ryan of Berwick Secondary College. The grants will be put towards their community initiative within their organisation. The Westfield Local Heroes program recognises individuals whose work promotes social wellbeing and harmony across family, youth opportunity and inclusion. Ms Kaur spends about 16 hours a week, cooking meals for the hungry, delivering it to them every Wednesday and Saturday. As the director of CISS for 20 years, Ms Petrides has spent countless hours advocating on behalf of her clients, many of whom are poverty stricken or escaping domestic violence. Ms Ryan found her passion for volunteer work at age 15, when she was encouraged by her mother to find community work and began helping at an aged-care facility.

IN BRIEF Teens caught following robbery

Strength in design By Jessica Anstice Design Unity in Berwick received two awards at the annual Building Designers Association design awards on Saturday, 4 August. Design Unity was enlisted to design a home with intended dual purpose. Located in sleepy Merricks on Westernport Bay, the residence needed to serve for now as a weekend getaway. In the future, the owners intend to retire there and they hope the home will foster tranquillity and reflection. The family also wanted the home to have a modest footprint and blend into the natural environment. To accomplish this brief, the key design idea for the new home was to introduce a sense of verticality. Going up brings visual interest, a sense of the dramatic, and abundant natural light. To gain the strength required to create this verticality Design Unity turned to recycled steel, aware of the durability of the raw material but also its significant carbon footprint. "The structure is constructed from recycled steel members marked for the scrap heap when the factory they were intended for was not built," managing director of Design Unity Warren Jenkins said. "The industrial span of the steel allows for the amazing cantilevered forms and large clear spans through the external and internal living zones." Externally, to the rear of the home, this translates into a large louvered roof over an alfresco zone. It provides sun protection in summer, yet allows natural light to stream into the home in the winter months. Inside, a vaulted ceiling is the centrepiece of the living room with an open kitchen recessed alongside this space. Design Unity's scheme includes floor to ceiling glazing to enhance the indoor-outdoor connection with the trees. Key elements in the design were the orien-

Mr Jenkins describes this home as having both an 'industrial and organic feeling', a successful juxtaposition largely achieved through the use of the steel forms. Their second project which received an award briefed to create a generous rural family home, Mr Jenkins created a contemporary home with the lot. It boasts expansive spaces for shared living and entertaining; secluded spots for the quieter aspects of life; and ample luxury living. The location on a family farm allowed for generous scope to spread this impressive sprawling statement residence. Space was needed to accommodate a large blended family including four teenagers. The home also needed to serve as a multigenerational home and enduring base for this family into the future.

One of the key features of Mr Warren's Design Unity's design is the way the home provides multiple ways to engage or find privacy within its walls. There is space, privacy and autonomy for the growing-into-adulthood teens, a private space for their parents, and ample opportunities for the family to accommodate and entertain their extended network of relatives and friends. The design has been divided into three zones: teenager, parents and entertaining. In the teen's zone each teen has a large bedroom with dressing room and a bathroom shared. The parent's area is both separated from, and connected to, the main residence via a glazed breezeway. The entertaining zone features interconnected large free-flowing spaces, and a home theatre with high end tiered leather seating.

A 17-year-old Cranbourne boy was among three teens charged following an alleged robbery and car theft in Cheltenham on Tuesday 7 August. Investigators have been told a Bentleigh East man was approached by four males as he withdrew cash from an ATM on Chesterville Road just after 10pm, with the group allegedly assaulting him and taking off with his cash, credit card and Land Rover. Police arrested three males in Pakenham about 10pm on Wednesday 9 August after they were allegedly found in the stolen vehicle. A fourth teenager was arrested shortly after while boarding a bus at Pakenham Railway Station. A 19-year-old Officer man has been charged with theft of motor vehicle, handle stolen goods and unlicensed driving. He has been bailed to appear at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 8 October. A 17-year-old Cranbourne boy and 14-yearold Pakenham boy were both charged with two counts of theft of motor vehicle, aggravated carjacking, armed robbery and assault. They will appear at a children's court at a later date. A 17-year-old Dandenong North boy has been released pending summons.

Hoons no more Prospect Hill Road in Narre Warren is no longer a hoon hotspot thanks to City of Casey. The street was known for reckless drivers drifting, performing skids, drug dealing, vandalism, smashed glass, dumped tyres and burnt outs. "Council resolved in April 2018 to temporarily close this section of Prospect Hill Road for a six month period," councils city design and construction manager Trevor Griffin said. "The trial closure was installed in early July. It comprises of a series of bollards and locked gate for maintenance. "Once the trial is completed a further report will be presented to council." Resident Michael Presta said it's made such a difference. "There is no more burning rubber smell throughout our houses and no more donuts in the wet," he said.

Australia is currently experiencing a drought crisis and as part of the Fiver for a Farmer campaign, the students at Berwick Primary have raised money doing their part to help. The Grade one students have been inquiring into how weather can affect peoples' lives and the environment. They created posters and spread the word around the school to dress as a farmer on Monda, 13 August. A number of students even bought money in from their own personal moneybox. The school raised $3930. All money raised will go to Drought Angels and Rural Aid, which provide much needed assistance and relief for farmers in distress and poverty.

Skin care, laser therapy Dandenong Dermatology Centre has been providing dermatology care and laser therapy to the area for many years. The centre is headed by Dr Peter Fergin, Dr Olivia Milne and Dr Stephen Gilmore. The trio were recently joined by Dr Rebecca Nguyen. Laser treatments are provided by dermatology and cosmetic nurse Marie Lebrasse. Marie has many years of expertise with laser treatments and techniques. She regularly updates her laser knowledge and skills and adheres to all new standards and regulations. Dr Fergin says that with summer over, now is the perfect time to repair the freckles or pig-

mentation that appear on exposed skin on the face, chest and hands. “Photo rejuvenation is one of the newest therapies in laser, and gives great results with minimal down time. “Photo rejuvenation with radio frequency technologies applies small amounts of heat safely into the dermis leading to remodelling of collagen and elastin, which, in turn, leads to plumping of the skin. “The epidermis also tightens giving the treated skin a smoother, more youthful appearance." Dandenong Dermatology Centre is at 1/110 David Street. Call 9791 3455. The first cosmetic consultation is free.

Invisible braces, total care Each patient is given personalised care from Dr Andy Ong at Elite Orthodontics at Narre Warren South. The focus of the clinic is to bring the latest and best advances in clinical orthodontics including braces to the Casey-Cardinia community. Staff aim to provide caring and experienced treatment by a registered Australasian Orthodontic Board-certified specialist orthodontist. The practice encourages parents to be chair-side during visits to allow treatment progress to be discussed in detail. Operating for the past six years in the CaseyCardinia area, the practice offers a minimal waiting list and a scheduling policy which allows patients to start treatment when they want to. And patients only see one orthodontist with Dr Ong there from start to finish. Traditional metal braces, clear braces and even invisible lingual braces that are fitted

onto the inner surfaces of the teeth are available at the clinic. Staff also use Invisalign - clear, plastic, custom-fitted splints that fit over the teeth and help straighten them without the need for braces. But the main strength of the clinic is the use of state-of-the-art technology such as computer-aided visualisation software to demonstrate various treatments and their effects allowing patients to gain an in-depth understanding of the proposed treatment. There is also a flexible, no-fuss payment plan and costs of treatment and expected duration of treatment are always discussed beforehand, so there are no surprises. No referral is needed and before and after school appointments are available. The clinic at 236 Ormond Road, Narre Warren South, is open four days a week from Monday to Thursday. Phone 8790 6288.

While some smaller kidney stones may pass, South Eastern Urology Urologist Philip McCahy warned that others can be so large that they will not pass and require medical attention. “Up to 15 per cent of the population may develop these stones which can cause recurrent urine infections, and, if left untreated, kidney damage or failure,” Mr McCahy said. Mr McCahy stated that there are three main treatment options for those suffering from large kidney stones. The first is shockwave therapy, a process where external shock waves are focussed on the stone and break it up into small pieces. “We are lucky in the Casey-Cardinia region in that Casey Hospital offers a service unique to Australia with day case, no anaesthetic lithotripsy,” Mr McCahy added. The next treatment is Ureterorenoscopy, a procedure where a very small flexible telescope is passed through natural passages into the kidney where stones are vaporised with a laser. “The urologists at Casey Hospital have the most powerful stone laser available which significantly reduces surgery time and enables better clearance,” Mr McCahy said. Finally, the third treatment Mr McCahy uses is Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy, a process where a needle is passed into the kidney from outside and a special balloon stretches the tissues to allow passage of a special telescope into the kidney. “The stones can either be plucked out or broken up and removed,” Mr McCahy explained. “Casey Hospital has one of the largest experiences of these operations in the country and the leading surgeons have developed techniques that have reduced hospital stay significantly.

“There are pros and cons to all these treatments and a combination of procedures may be required to guarantee stone clearance. Discussion with a urologist with expertise in stone surgery is essential.” South Eastern Urology was established by Philip McCahy to provide consultant delivered local anaesthetic vasectomy service for the south-eastern suburbs. LIVE AMONG NATURE AT LEAFY KINGBIRD LOCATED in leafy Botanic Ridge, Kingbird Developments presents Kingbird Estate. Kingbird has shown sensitivity to the neighbouring Royal Botanic Gardens and the local fauna with open space throughout this new residential estate. With lots ranging from 281 to 1234 square metres, Kingbird has 514 home sites that will give its residents 14 acres of wetlands and open space, as well as large backyards that many other estates have moved away from. Kingbird Developments also appreciates how difficult buying your first home can be, so with this in mind they are offering a five per cent deposit on lots

within Kingbird, which is great news in this current market. This will enable more people to achieve their dream new home in a great suburb. Centrally located between the Mornington Peninsula, Phillip Island and Melbourne CBD, residents will have great access to the Monash Freeway, but it’s the weekend day trips and outdoors lifestyle at the neighbouring beaches and wineries which are only 20 minutes away that will really give residents the full lifestyle experience. Kingbird offers walking access to the Royal Botanical Gardens, a brand-new shopping centre and new primary school nearby.

The developer also understands its responsibility to work with partners, Taylors and Kiakura Land Sales, to provide a fantastic community that new residents will be proud to call home. Come on site and celebrate with family and friends Kingbird’s launch on 18 August,

at 11am. Jumping castles for the kids, coffee and doughnuts for the mums and dads - there will be something for everyone. Please feel free to call Heather on 0488 972 712 or visit the Kingbird sales office, at 95 Browns Road, Botanic Ridge, from Saturday to Wednesday from noon to 5pm. ●

A 39-year-old Narre Warren father is fighting a further jail term for sending a barrage of foulmouthed texts and threats to publish intimate photos of his ex-partner. A day after his release from jail in October, the man sent two photos of his “partially naked” ex-partner to her, with the message “not to f*** me around”, a court heard. He warned that intimate photos and videos of her would otherwise be spread on Facebook. On the same day, he texted her that the Department of Health and Human Services would “love” the photos of her. The man was on an 18-month community corrections order at the time, and also faced a driving-while-suspended charge in Noble Park in January. Pleading guilty, he told the court that his expartner had ground his business down while he was in jail. He was demanding the $30,000 that she’d “stolen” from the enterprise, he claimed. A defence lawyer said the man was trying to turn his life around, was complying “in large measure” with his corrections order and no longer using meth. “That relationship (with his ex-partner) is well and truly over,” the lawyer said. “It was a fairly destructive one for both of them.” The lawyer said “there was enough there” for the man to remain on an extended corrections order. “He’s approaching middle age, he’s not a young fellow. “He would be in a very difficult position when he’s released.” Magistrate Jack Vandersteen noted the man’s prior offences leading to his corrections order in 2016 were “not dissimilar” to his latest charges. On that occasion, the man had made comments for his ex-partner to jump off the West Gate Bridge. The latest abuse was “incredibly sharp and terse, to put it mildly,” Mr Vandersteen said. He cancelled the man’s corrections order, and resentenced him for prior offences associated with the order. The man was jailed for 90 days, but was soon after bailed to appeal the sentence at the Victorian County Court.

Riding with passion By Brendan Rees Without skateboarding, Jack may not have got through the hard times he's endured in life. Today, Jack, a young Victorian who is recovering from psychosis hopes a specialist program will be able to help other young people. "It always helps to speak to someone, if something is wrong then speak out to mates, family, any outreach," he said. Jack is now leading a new skateboarding program that creates a 'safe space' for teens and young adults to discuss their experiences with psychosis. The headspace Youth Early Psychosis Program (hYEPP) was launched with a skateboarding competition at The Shed in Cranbourne on Saturday 11 August - which was hosted by professional vertical skateboarder Renton Millar. "Being able to talk about mental illness is vital and can encourage young people get the help they need," said Jack. Once a week, Jack will lead skateboarding lessons and during the class there are opportunities for participants to chat about problems on their mind and be connected with headspace mental health experts. hYEPP Program Manager, and operations manager for the Alfred Child and Youth Mental Health Service, Glenda Pedwell said psychosis often emerged in adolescence, which was a critical time for young people in working out who they are, getting through school and entering the world of work.

Yoga teacher Karen Oakley will be taking a free yoga class at Berwick Healthcare Centre on 5 August.

Young people join in the skateboard competition at The Shed in Cranbourne. "hYEPP services help young people get back to school and work and doing all the things they love," she said. Headspace Board member and youth mental health campaigner, Professor Patrick McGorry AO, also attended the event to celebrate the inroads that have advanced with early psychosis services. "Expert help from special early intervention programs, such as hYEPP, can help young people get back on track with their schooling, their passions and their relationships with family and friends", Prof McGorry said.

Relax, rejuvenate, succeed By Narelle Coulter In meetings with male CEOs Melanie Gleeson, the founder of Endota Spa, will sometimes cheekily ask them how many loads of washing they put on at home before attending the meeting. The answer, unsurprisingly, is usually none. “I ask that question not to be obnoxious but just to get them thinking ’oh, I didn’t do any’. (Where as) I had to do all that and get here( to the meeting). “ Ms Gleeson used the point to illustrate the difference experiences of men and their female colleagues, most of who are torn between their paid work and their unpaid caring duties at home and not feeling they are “giving 100 per cent to either“. Ms Gleeson, a married mother of two boys, was guest speaker at the fourth annual Casey Cardinia Region Women’s Business Lunch on Friday 10 August. More than 350 women, and a sprinkling of men, listened to Ms Gleeson’s inspirational story of turning $5000 on a credit card into a business which today employs over 1000 people and turns over $60 million. “When I started Endota in 2000 one of the main drivers was to create spaces or havens where people could come to have some time, especially women because we do so much,“ Ms Gleeson said. “We really need to take time to stop and recalibrate because we cannot keep giving and giving and giving when we are not filled up ourselves. “In that process of being mothers and wives and daughters, and it’s the same for the blokes in room, we sometimes forget who we are, what makes us happy and what is really important.“ Ms Gleeson said Endota was born “out of a love for making people feel better“. “Long before I had Endota, somewhere in my subconscious I understood the power of healing and touch and energy transference and what that means.“ When Ms Gleeson embarked on her Endota journey the spa industry in Australia was “very small“ and little understood. “There were only four or five spas in Australia at the time. I was working in one and I would notice that people would rush in and their shoulders would be up here,“ she said, drawing her shoulders up beside her ears. “45 minutes after treatment this would happen,“ she said, slowly lowering her shoulders. “There was a physical change as well as an emotional change that came from slowing down and taking some time. I wanted to be able to take that feeling to more people.“ Ms Gleeson and her then business partner were 26 with “ no idea of what it meant to open your own business“. They attended as many networking events as they could and walked kilometres leaflet dropping trying spread word about their vision. The permit for their first salon on the Mornington Peninsula was knocked back by the local council because objectors thought it was a brothel. “Fast forward 18 years and wellness is big business,“ Ms Gleeson said. “Endota is not a beauty business, it’s a wellness business. We slow people down, we give them care and time and that’s really really important.“ Endota as a business really took off when Ms Gleeson and her partner decided to franchise the concept and “thank goodness we did“. Today there are 110 salons across Australia owned by individual business owners who are part of the Endota “network“. “I’ve been able to work with amazing business owners, the majority of who are women, but who share our values and have invested heavily in the Endota brand,“ Ms Gleeson said. “There is nothing better in your local community than when you have a local business owner who lives and works in the community and cares for that community. That is what has helped build the Endota brand to where we are today.“ She acknowledged some negative publicity Endota received during the recent federal government inquiry into the effectiveness of the berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au

She welcomed the inquiry as a “good thing“ which had to happen. She said franchising was like running a small business and “what you get out is what you put in“. “The inquiry is a great thing. Every day it reminds everyone to do business the right way“. She said shared values were central to franchising success, as was consistency. “The upsides of franchising as a business model have been amazing. A lot (of Endota franchisees) are multi-site owners. They nurture and care for their team. We also build

pathways for our team so not only can therapists become managers, but they can go on to build their own spas.“ She outlined Endota’s growth plans including new product ranges for babies and menopausal women, wellness colleges in Canberra and Docklands and a wellness hotel in Byron Bay. Ms Gleeson said she had learnt a lot about herself during her business journey. She described her stamina and resilience, how she enjoys change and surrounds herself with “amazing people“.

Star News advertising representative Kelly Price with Lisa Panjkov from Beaconsfield Dental, Sue-Anne Lewis from St Margaret's and Naomi Wright from Source Bulk Foods. 183861 She said she had also learnt that vulnerability is not a weakness. “I cry and meetings, I laugh at meetings and sometimes I get strange looks because of that. I think we are moving away from masculine values to get a better balance with feminine values. We are being more collaborative in our organisations, communicating better. We are starting to understand vulnerability is certainly not a weakness.“ A donation from the lunch was made to the Marnin Women’s Resource Centre in Western Australia. Thursday, 16 August, 2018

lours and personalities of the individuals who would come to make the piece, a manifestation of BPNH’s inclusive values. An open invitation to several free weaving workshops revealed an encouraging enthusiasm for this project by community volunteers. These workshops evolved into regular weaving working bees and satellite events, including at the Berwick Night Market. To complement this expression of the House’s values, an embroidery group who regularly meet at BPNH rose to the challenge of designing and constructing a banner, con-

tributing their deep expertise in textile design, quilting, and embroidery. Weaving volunteers are Casey residents from Australia, Sri Lanka, India, Korea, China, Japan, Lebanon, Chile, and the United Kingdom. Their shared love of creating this piece has surpassed language barriers, and community members have found in this group a safe place to tell stories about themselves and their cultures, and friendships have blossomed. The 200 circular weavings are formed using compact discs, repurposed into weaving looms. The discs - now an abundant waste product

in the age of digital streaming -were destined for landfill. The two works of art will be unveiled on Monday 27 August 2018 at 1pm, please call 0431 332 086 or email admin@bpnh.org.au if you wish to attend.

THE ANGEL OF AUSTRALIA - MIRUSIA TO PERFORM AT BUNJIL PLACE AND WE HAVE TICKETS!

By Jessica Anstice Team Hollows at Berwick College, led by coordinators Ms Deana Mihalos and Mr Matthew Oke, are running a week long fundraising activity called The Everest Climb starting on Monday, 13 August to Friday, 17 August. "Over the holiday break, a student directed initiative to plan positive affirmations and messages were created and installed up and down the stairs from C block to D block of the college," Ms Mihalos said. "This was a student run initiative to officiate The Everest Climb, to promote positivity and to contribute to permanent changes within our school based on our learning team and college values." Next week, the college will have over 150 students participating in the charity event. "We are asking our Hollows students to volunteer 45 minutes of their time during Hollows Week to climb up and down the steps from the bottom of the school to the top," she said. "The distance and incline will be measured for each student and the results will be collated and compared to climbing Mount Everest." Students have been raising money by asking friends, family and neighbours to support their Everest Climb. Students nominated and voted on the charity organisations that the raised money will go to. These include Headspace, Dolly's Dream and Cancer Council.

Australian-Dutch Soprano Mirusia has announced some special show dates that see her play at Bunjil Place on Sunday 26 August. Acclaimed as the ‘Angel of Australia’, Mirusia has gained worldwide fame as she featured as the soprano soloist with André Rieu and the Johann Strauss Orchestra for over 10 years, performing in front of millions across the world. Star News Group is giving 5 readers the chance to win two tickets to the 3pm Sunday 26 August performance. Mirusia’s career is now in full swing forging her own career as a solo artist. Her recent album ‘From the Heart’ and tour of the same name has received outstanding reviews and has touched the hearts of many audiences. Mirusia studied classical voice at the Queensland Conservatorium in Australia and at the age of 21 was announced as the youngest ever recipient of the prestigious Dame Joan Sutherland Opera Award. Her solo career has flourished with many extensive and successful tours of Australia and internationally and her solo albums always place highly on the Australian Aria Album and DVD chart rankings. “I’m proud to have been there from the start and to see her career take off. After having worked with this incredibly talented young lady I can only wish her all the best in her solo career.“ Andre Rieu Simply visit starcommunity.com.au/competitions now to enter.

The amendment removed the ‘Gross Leasable Floor Area’ cap imposed on the Eden Rise Shopping centre, which restricted the area of oor space allowed to be used for commercial uses to 6,000sqm. The amendment also introduced controls to protect residential amenity.

Please RSVP by Friday 31 August at www.trybooking.com/404526 For more information please call 9594 6199 or email communication@monashhealth.org

Removing the ‘Gross Leasable Floor Area’ cap implements State Planning Policy and has come at the request of Urbis on behalf of the Pask Group (the owners of the Eden Rise Shopping Centre). Controls protecting the residential amenity have been implemented in response to community consultation.

SPORT

Aarts brings the energy By Nick Creely Tackling, chasing and a ferocious, infectious energy at ground level - it's the mantra of Richmond's plethora of small forwards at both VFL and AFL level. For former Beaconsfield player, Noble Park listed player and emerging leader of the Tigers' VFL program Jake Aarts, he has all three components of his game in spades - it's the reason he is on the radar for many AFL clubs come draft night later this year. Hard work and an opportunity to grow his game at Punt Road for four years have now culminated in the dynamic forward being chosen as one of the 13 VFL prospects to take part in the state draft combine, which will be held in October. Turning 24 later this year, Aarts said he didn't expect to be chosen for the combine, but understands the footballing landscape every player pulling on a VFL jumper has ambitions to take the next step to the elite level. "It was pretty surprising at the time, to be honest - I sort of hadn't been thinking about it at all lately, and when I got the call from our footy manager, I was surprised, but it was a good result for sure," he said. "I wouldn't say it (getting drafted) hasn't crossed my mind at all - the last couple of years playing VFL I've thought about it more, but this year it's been more about the footy and trying to make finals. "I haven't really focused on whether clubs have been looking at me, but it's great, for sure." It's often spoken about that the culture down at Punt Road is rock solid, and that it allows each individual involved with the VFL and AFL program to flourish and play to their strengths - Aarts is testament to that, he lives and breathes it on a weekly basis. "The culture at Richmond has been really good since I got to the club - in my first year (2014), there was always got a bit of divide between the VFL and AFL boys, but each year I've been there it's got better and better - it's something we work on each year, and it probably started four years ago," he said. "It hasn't just started; it takes a long time to get a good connection which is something we talk a lot about with the AFL boys as well. When you get a good system, and a strong culture, everyone buys into it, and all the boys have. "With the success of the AFL boys last year, and to an extent the VFL boys, it's had a big impact on me, and it makes you want to keep playing, the hard work is all there is to it for us as a club." Aarts plays to his strengths; he applies extraordinary pressure with the likes of AFLlisted players Tyson Stengle, Shai Bolton, Liam Baker and Sam Lloyd often around him at ground level suffocating opponents with their intensity - it's the Richmond way, and Aarts is right at home. "The way I play my footy, it's not really changed since my junior days," he said. "I love bringing energy and tackling, and you've got to defend as well, it's not all offense, and being a small forward at Richmond, they

Beaconsfield's own Jake Aarts will be one to watch in the state combine this year. need that in our team defence - it helps the midfield and backline with our forward pressure, so that's what we work on. "Nothing's really changed for me, it's just how I play." In last year's state combine, the likes of Dom Barry (Port Adelaide), Bayley Fritsch (Melbourne), Zac Langdon (GWS Giants) and Liam Ryan (West Coast) impressed enough to earn an AFL opportunity. Aarts will use those examples, plus a number of others flourishing at AFL level, as inspiration for what's ahead.

"It sort of hasn't been until late I've realised (the impact of mature age players) - Lambo (Richmond premiership star Kane Lambert) obviously came into the system until he was like 23 and has had a big impact straightaway, and you look at Geelong with Tim Kelly, he's been amazing," he said. "Lately I've noticed all these things, and the impact they have at AFL level, so you do sit there and think that you could make an impact at AFL level, because you've already done the four years of playing at a high standard of footy, that's how I see it."

Picture: COURTESY OF CAMERON GRIMES In a recent game against Geelong at GMHBA Stadium, VFL coach Craig McRae praised the potentially AFL-bound Aarts in his VFL report. "Such a terrier. Low possessions, but just his tenacity was unbelievable. He's a really, really good leader in terms of his competitive nature. We love him in our team. He was one of our best players on the day," he said. It's been a strong four years for the Beaconsfield product, and in 2019, anything's possible for the tenacious forward.

The Magpies come together for VIP day By Nick Creely The Narre Warren Football Netball Club hosted its VIP day at Fox Road on Saturday, with politicians, sponsors, volunteers and local junior club members recognised for their support throughout the season. A large crowd gathered in the new social rooms at Kalora Park to celebrate the success of the club to date this season, and update members on how the teams are tracking as they enter finals, and to make some important announcements. Prior to the senior game against Officer - in which the Magpies eventually won 87 points - senior coach Matt Shinners addressed the crowd, talking about the growth of the club onfield this season, with the club sitting on top of the seniors, second in the reserves and second berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au

in the under 19s. Shinners praised the club for how it's handled not having lights at the ground all season, with the club having to train at junior clubs and various grounds throughout the season. Playing her 200th A Grade netball match that day, Magpies captain Erin Clark delivered an emotional address about what the club meant to her and everyone involved in the community, talking about her younger days at Kalora Park and how it has made her a better person and allowed her to meet lifelong friends. State Opposition Leader Matthew Guy and Narre Warren North Liberal candidate Vikki Fitzgerald then announced a $660,000 pledge if elected towards Stage 2 of the redevelopment of the club, which would consist of as-

phalting the perimeter of the car park and the completion and fitout of the first floor meeting and committee rooms. "Vikki Fitzgerald has been doing extensive work with the local community to secure this upgrade for Narre Warren Football and Netball Club and has advocated strongly for this funding," Mr Guy said. Fitzgerald said it was integral to get these upgrades for the club. "Sporting clubs are the hub of any community," she said. "By providing Narre Warren Football and Netball Club the funding they deserve, all teams participating in the local league can benefit from using these upgrades, as they will provide a safe playing and working environment for players and club officials."

Daniel’s Sports Quiz Daniel O’Halloran is an aspiring local sports journalist who is heavily into his footy, cricket, and tennis. Like anyone with a keen interest in the craft, he loves hearing and reading about other people’s stories. Researched from running a keen eye over Gazette editions of years gone by, this is his quiz: Who are we? 1. I won a Morrish Medal for the Gippsland Power before winning an AFL premiership with Collingwood just a couple of years later… 2. I’m the second cousin of one of Carlton’s best ever VFL/AFL players, and was a Pakenham local while playing for the Casey Scorpions… 3. Currently playing at Monbulk, I signed on to coach Officer (then ROC) for the 2009 Casey Cardinia league season… 4. We currently coach against each other in the West Gippsland Football Netball Competition, but previously served together at Mulgrave as coach and playing assistant… 5. I was a five-time leading goalkicker with Geelong in the AFL before my stint as a coach in the Casey Cardinia Football League… Daniel’s ANSWERS 1. Jaryd Blair 2. Alex Silvagni 3. Kris Fletcher 4. Hayden Stanton and Ben Collins 5. Ronnie Burns

3.

The Casey Cavaliers enjoyed a fruitful weekend of Big V finals basketball. Both the Division 1 and Youth League 2 women moved a step closer to realising their championship dreams, but there is still work to be done. The Division 1 women took game one on the road against Geelong in their semi final series on Saturday evening. Trailing by four points at the main break, the Cavs completely turned the tables on the Supercats in an impressive third quarter effort. Casey went up a gear and Geelong was unable to keep pace as Keeley Patterson caught fire from deep to hit three triples in a minute, helping the Cavs to a seven-point lead at the final break. The Supercats attempted a comeback in the fourth, but Casey answered every challenge as Jamie-Lee Jeffs controlled both ends of the court and Tarryn Wilkin made her presence known on the offensive end. The Cavs pulled away for an important win, 77-67. Jamie-Lee Jeffs (22 points, 10 rebounds, 3 steals, 3 blocks) was the dominant player on the court, while Tarryn Wilkin (15 points, 5 rebounds) and Keeley Patterson (15 points - 5/7 from three) provided vital buckets. Meanwhile, the Youth League 2 women booked their ticket to the grand final with a hard-fought win over Frankston at Casey Stadium on Saturday night. After a first-week finals bye, the Cavs struggled to find their groove early and only mustered 23 first-half points. Their offence had stalled, but crucially, their defence was still running hot and contained the Blues to just 24

points of their own. The Cavs didn't just break out of their scoring slump in the third quarter; they obliterated their opponents in a barnstorming 28-14 quarter. The usual terrific ball movement and fast break offence returned, while the hustle and defence remained. It was a tantalising quarter of basketball as Steph Leclerc wreaked havoc on both ends of the court with her speed and willingness to dive for loose balls. Stars Tess Young and Lauren Tuplin combined for 14 points in the quarter to lead Casey to a commanding 13-point lead with a quarter to play. The Cavs kept the Blues at arm's length for the remainder of the game to run out 74-62 winners and book their place in the grand final. It was a sublime team effort that got Casey over the line, led impeccably by Steph Leclerc's near triple-double of 10 points, 9 assists, 7 rebounds and 4 steals. Lauren Tuplin (18 points, 3 rebounds) and Tess Young (13 points, 11 rebounds) continued their fine seasons. This Saturday night at Casey Stadium, the Division 1 women host Geelong in game two of their semi final series from 8pm. A win will see them progress through to the grand final and a loss will see them return to action on Sunday in a do-or-die game three clash from 1:30pm at Casey Stadium. Meanwhile, the Youth League 2 women have the weekend off as they wait for their grand final opponent to be decided. Frankston and Pakenham will be battling it out on Saturday night for the right to face Casey in the grand final series.

Strikers push Doves in draw By Nick Creely FOOTBALL FEDERATION VICTORIA SOCCER WRAP - ROUND 19 The Casey Comets enjoyed a week off in State League 1 South East over the weekend, but Warragul United drew 2-2 with Mornington SC at Baxter Park. The Comets will return to the pitch when they take on the United at home on Saturday afternoon. In State League 2 South East action, Peninsula Strikers put in a sublime effort to draw 2-2 with ladder leaders Doveton on Saturday. The Strikers sit on almost opposite ends of the table to the Doves, and lead 1-0 before the Doves fought back in the second half. Berwick City also drew 1-1 with Knox City FC at Egan Lee Reserve, with the visitors scor-

ing the only goal of the second half through Jarod Blackbourn. In State League 5 South, meanwhile, Casey Panthers drew 2-2 with Endeavour Hills Fire at Prospect Hill. The Fire was down 2-0 after a blistering first half from the home side, but two late goals saved the day and helped them share the points. Chelsea FC picked up a win over Pakenham United 1-0, in a tough affair at Edithvale Reserve. And in other games, Rowville incredibly won 12-2 against Drouin Dragons, with Ruben Ichim scoring six and Louis Palmire four. The Eagles were simply unstoppable, but the Dragons managed to score two goals and battled hard. Bunyip District had the bye. berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au

The Eagles pass the test By Nick Creely SOUTH EAST FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE REVIEW - ROUND 15 The importance of a tough tussle on the eve of finals is invaluable for a side gearing up for a tilt at a premiership. Pakenham were never going to just hand Cranbourne the four points at Toomuc Reserve on Saturday, 13.6 (84) to 7.8 (50). The Eagles were made to work against an Ash Green side that has improved out of sight this season, but the class of Marc Holt (four goals) and Nathan Gardiner (three) down forward had the visitors hold sway and made the most of their opportunities after being starved early. After an even, contested opening half, the Eagles managed to get the break in the third term, booting away to a 26-point three quarter time lead after finally finding their run and dare that makes them one of the most exciting teams in the competition. With Anthony Vella once again eye catching, and the likes of young defender Corey Ellison, Jordan Bertand and Brandon Wapshott providing some class with ball in hands, Eagles coach Steve O'Brien was pleased to notch up the four points. "They make you earn it - they play a good, contested brand of football, so they don't give it to you easy," he said. "It was a good, tough contest." Heading into a final round clash against Beaconsfield with no change possible on the ladder and a final against Berwick looming, O'Brien said confidence is pretty high at Casey Fields. "Our results over the course of the year have proven that our game stacks up, and it's capable of beating anybody," he said. "We're pretty confident heading into finals. We haven't changed too much all year - one of our strengths all year has been our spread of goal kickers, so as long as that can continue, we'll kick a challenging score." On a promising afternoon from the Lions, Stephen Morey was once again superb in the backline, while Jeconiah Peni played a terrific game through the middle. Down at Holm Park Reserve, Beaconsfield continued to build a solid platform of form before finals with a massive win over TooradinDalmore, 16.12 (108) to 4.2 (26). Off the back of four goal hauls to young star Riley Verbi and spearhead Nathan Langley, as well as impressive cameos by Jesse Patullo (three goals) and Sam Merrick (three), the Eagles found plenty of avenues to goal, and worked the ball around expertly to control the game from the outset. Eagles coach Leigh McQuillen said despite the setbacks, he believes his side has turned a corner. "We feel like ever since being hit by a number of injuries and the loss to Pakenham, we've been able to play a solid brand of football," he said. "We're coming good at the right time of the year. "We are certainly gaining momentum so we'll keep pushing to improve and along the way and add in the returning players as we see fit. Those returning from injury will be ready to play." McQuillen pointed to his younger players as the most impressive aspect of the 82 point win, and praised them for seizing the opportunity as senior players continue to work back from injury. "Along the way we are bringing up a number of under 19s in Mitch Smith, Luke Bettio, Devon Smith, Jack Docherty, Jesse Patullo and more recently Sam Merrick," he said.

Jordan Bertrand finds some space and swings onto his trusty left foot. 183886 "They're all going to be great senior footballers for our club moving forward. With so many out it's given these guys the chance and they certainly haven't looked out of place. "So our biggest asset right now is confidence in our youth and the fact that with players returning selection will be tough." McQuillen said he was wary of the Seagulls, who have made a habit out of shocking teams and catching them off guard. "If you give them a start they can rattle sides. We certainly wanted to take them on with our ground and ball movement," he said. "There's a clear difference between our home grounds size. We knew we had a lot of speed and hard running players out there so you play to your strengths. "The inside stoppage work of Damien Johnson and Brad Homfray set us up as did the run and class of Verbi, Bromley and Bowd. "They're a physical side Tooradin and we knew we had to atone for our poor showing a few weeks prior in similar conditions against Pakenham. "Credit to the Lions they were too good for us that day but we certainly made that a focus pre-game to mentally prepare our side." Narre Warren, meanwhile, expectedly brushed aside Officer at Kalora Park, 19.15 (129) to 6.6 (42). With stars in Trent Shinners, Brad Scalzo and leading goal kicker Nick Scanlon all missing, Matt Shinners' side was certainly different, but no less effective. Pushing forward, Mitch Cox simply starred, running rings around the Kangaroos' defence to snare six majors in a best afield display. He was supported by Trent Cody, Nathan Foote and Aaron Wilson, who kicked seven between them as the Magpies took the game away after holding a 34 point quarter time lead. The Kangaroos fought back nicely to level out the second term, but the class of the Magpies' ball winners in Josh Tonna, and also Dylan Quirk, ensured they would coast through the second half with little trouble. There was, however, a moment to smile about for Kangaroos supporters, with skipper Matt Clarke producing one of the goals of the year, kicking the ball out of mid-air from 35 out, in a freakish effort.

Nathan Langley found some touch with four goals for Beaconsfield against the Gulls. 183887 Defender James Waldon was once again a shining light on a tough day to be an Officer defender, while usual suspects in Tyler Clark, Sean Roach and Stephen Heppel all battled hard. And finally, Berwick had an incredible 54 shots on goal to coast to a 222 point win over Doveton, 35.19 (229) to 1.1 (7). The Doves are battling to make it to the end of the year, and came face to face with a Wickers side hell bent on continuing their strong form. The Wickers gave no look in to the Doves from the opening bounce, leading by 106 at half time before launching a frightening 19

goal second half. All but securing second spot on the table, the Wickers didn't take the foot off even slightly, with the Doves not scoring until the last ten minutes of the game with a Matt Stapleton major. Harry Money surged to the top of the competition leading goal kicker award with nine goals, while the Wickers had seven multiple goal kickers and 12 individual goal kickers. Luke Sheppard and Madi Andrews ran rampant and racked up plenty of the footy, while Stapleton and young star Mitch Cotter did everything in their power to help the Doves.

Eagles soar atop Division 2 By Hayley Wildes and Nick Creely SOUTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 2 - ROUND 17 The Doveton Eagles easily accounted for Mount Waverley at Power Reserve to remain on top of the ladder. A barnstorming ten-goal to one opening term set the scene for a 19.20 (134) to 10.8 (68) win. Nick Battle and Nicholas Beer were best for the Eagles. In a top-four battle, Keysborough was overrun by Highett in the second half. The Burras led by 10 points at half time, but Highett used a dominant third term to run away with a 15.12 (102) to 13.6 (84) win. Chris Bryan booted six majors and took an absolute screamer that brought the crowd to their feet. DIVISION 3 - ROUND 16 Hampton Park led at every change to defeat Ashwood at Robert Booth Reserve. Cameron Williamson (four goals) was best on ground as the Redbacks claimed a 12.11 (83) to 6.7 (43) win. Hallam battled valiantly against Heatherton, but was unable to get the win, falling 10.9 (69) to 9.4 (58). Rory McIvor and Mitchell Lambert were superb for the Hawks, while Reagan Maddaford and Callum Cusack were dominant for Heatherton. Springvale Districts sent a message to the rest of the competition with a thumping win over the third-placed Endeavour Hills Falcons. The Dees' defence was stifling all game as they recorded a 13.9 (87) to 3.7 (25) win. Daniel Morris was best for Springvale Districts, while Daniel Morrison battled hard for Endeavour Hills. DIVISION 4 - ROUND 17 The top-placed Carrum Patterson Lakes ran riot against Sandown as Alex Wilson (six goals) and Brenton Rafferty (five goals) put on a show up forward. Sandown was never in the contest as Carrum Patterson Lakes ran out 24.16 (160) to 4.8 (32) winners. Andrew Curd was impressive for

The Doveton Eagles claimed another win and sit on top of the SFNL Division 2 ladder. 183665 Carrum Patterson Lakes and Scott Jackman was a warrior for Sandown. With just one round left to play, Carrum Patterson Lakes have officially sewn up top spot. The third-placed Frankston Dolphins showed they're a genuine premiership threat with a dominant win over the second-placed Lyndhurst Lightning at Overport Park. Frankston led at every change, eventually running out 13.11 (89) to 7.7 (49) winners. Sam Turner and Hayden Armstrong powered the Dolphins forward, while Josh Kerrigan booted four goals. Despite the loss, Jesse Walia and Jason Twite impressed for the Lightning. MORNINGTON PENINSULA NEPEAN DIVISION TWO - ROUND 18 Pearcedale finished off its season in disappointing fashion, falling by 107-points to finals bound Langwarrin at Lloyd Park on Saturday, 21.19 (145) to 5.8 (38). The Panthers stood no chance after cough-

ing up six unanswered first term goals, and saw their deficit blow out to 80 by half time, with goal machine Jesse Murphy (seven goals) running amok to be in for a big day. The visitors fought admirably to boot three goals in the third, but fell away again as the Kangaroos surged away to a mammoth victory. Luke Dalmau was a shining light - booting two of the Panthers' five goals - while Damien Scully was also solid. Devon Meadows, meanwhile, were no match for premiership fancies Red Hill away from home, 20.9 (129) to 5.4 (34). The win was set up from an astonishing 12 goal first term to the Hillmen, maintaining their 71 point quarter time lead to run out dominant winners. The Division Two finals kick off this weekend, with Red Hill taking on Karingal and Chelsea taking on Langwarrin. VAFA DIVISION 2 - ROUND 17

St Johns were comprehensively beaten by Whitefriars Football Club, set up by a 10-goal to two first half. St Johns were never in the contest as Whitefriars claimed a 17.16 (118) to 5.4 (34) win. Glenn Costas and Rohan Scott battled hard all day for St John's. VFLW - ROUND 14 The Casey Demons were no match for Melbourne Uni at Casey Fields on Saturday afternoon. A scoreless first quarter highlighted their issues and Melbourne Uni skipped out to a 33-point half time lead. After half time, the Demons came out strongly and matched Melbourne Uni in the third quarter. Unfortunately, Melbourne Uni slammed on four goals to zero in the final term to claim a 10.5 (65) to 1.6 (12) win. Darcy Guttridge, Bianca Jakobsson and Georgia McLean battled hard all day for the Demons, while Madelaine Shevlin kicked their lone goal.

Swans bring the changes with VP Wallace stepping up By Nick Creely A breath of fresh air is coming from Casey Fields as Casey-South Melbourne gears up for the Victorian Premier Cricket season. After a raft of changes both on and off-field, the Swans look settled, and primed to bounce back from last year's two win season that had them narrowly avoid the wooden spoon. Current first XI batsman and 2017/18 leading run scorer Michael Wallace will step into the role of vice-president, making him the youngest ever for the club at just 27. He will join Ross Hibbins - who has been re-elected as president, while the committee will also welcome in Craig Lambden onto the general committee. It's a role Wallace is looking forward to, and wants to make an impact as his club looks to build sustainable success both on and offfield. "It wasn't necessarily something I've been aiming for, but the opportunity presented itself and I'm happy to do that work for the club," he said.

Michael Wallace has stepped into the role of vice president at Casey-South Melbourne. 163770 Picture: GARY SISSONS "I've enjoyed the support I've got from my friends and everyone around the club, and the role really shows how much they care, so I want to give back as much as I can." Wallace will learn off Hibbins throughout the season while also juggling his playing commitments, in a relationship he believes will benefit the club.

"Ross has been great to learn off, with the amount of work he puts in - for me, game day and training I'll worry about playing, and then outside of that, I'll help as much I can," he said. "We've got a great understanding in that I'm a player, and he's been great in dealing with it all, but it's great to learn from him. Ross Moore, Laurie Stevens, those kinds of people, have always been a great help for me too." With the Swans deep in pre-season and with less than two months away before the start of the season, Wallace said the club has focused heavily on a key area he believes will propel the players forward. "Pre-season has been really strong so far, and we've had a heavier focus on fitness, which all the boys are enjoying, and we're being pushed probably more than we have in the past," he said. "But it's what we need - last year we could compete in games at times, but it was a mental, physical or a bit of both that let us down, so a bit more hard work will help us push over the line more in games." Driving the Swans is the disappointment

of last year, but they are determined to turn things around with a different approach. "Last year was disappointing for everyone at the club," he said. "It'll turn around with hard work on the field, and hard work off the field. The challenge is there in front of us." Wallace pointed to the batting depth as a key area of improvement, with the signings of Englishman Luke Wells and also young star Ryan Quirk a big tick, while in the bowling department Josh Dowling should help off-set the big loss of Brendan Rose. "If you look back at our games last year, it was probably our batsmen that didn't quite step up and get us over the line, so it was definitely a focus (in recruiting)," he said. Brendan is (also) a big loss, and he's not an easy replacement - it's an opportunity for others to come through, but we've still got Nathan Lambden, Jackson Fry, Dylan Hadfield, so the quicks are still there, and we've got Jonah Serong as a spinner and (Lachlan) Sperling as well."

Casey’s Dee-lightful dozen puts the VFL on notice By Hayley Wildes They were challenged, they had their backs against the wall, but the Casey Demons responded and powered away from the Sandringham Zebras on the weekend to claim their 12th win on the trot. On Saturday afternoon at Casey Fields, the Demons produced perhaps their worst first quarter of football for the season; held goalless and in a 22-point hole at the first break. The Zebras simply outworked the Demons, but despite the bad start, there were three quarters of football left for the Demons to turn things around. And they did just that. Will Stephenson put through the Demons’ first major of the day three minutes into the 46 STAR NEWS

second quarter and when Dean Kent kicked truly at the nine-minute mark, the deficit was just seven points. The Zebras responded with a goal of their own, but majors to Tim Smith and Sam Weideman had Casey trailing by just three points at half time. Declan Keilty, Josh Wagner and Tom Bugg were massive in helping the Demons wrestle their way back into the contest. Seemingly possessing all of the momentum, the Casey boys quickly found themselves on the back foot once again as Sandringham came out of half-time with a real thirst for the contest. The Zebras booted two goals in the first three minutes of the quarter and had Casey searching for answers. The answer came in the

form of a Mitch King major. Goals to Cory Machaya and Kent in time-on were worth their weight in gold and at the final break, scores were level with the game there to be won. The Demons’ fourth quarter performance was one that summed up their incredible season to date; gritty, determined and a playing with real desire to win each and every contest. With captain Jack Hutchins leading the way, Casey held Sandringham scoreless and majors to Weideman, Kent and James Freeman saw the Demons record a gutsy 21-point win, 10.15 (75) to 8.6 (54). Skipper Jack Hutchins was sublime all day in a best on ground performance, while Tom Bugg (28 disposals), Josh Wagner (25 dispos-

als) and Jay Lockhart played pivotal roles. Dean Kent (three goals) and Sam Weideman (two goals) ensured the scoreboard kept ticking over at vital stages throughout the game. Meanwhile, St Kilda AFL-listed players Hugh Goddard and veteran defender Sam Gilbert were best for the Zebras. The win not only sees Casey (14-2) boast an incredible dozen wins in a row, they also claimed top spot on the ladder with two rounds to play. The Demons will look to record their 13th win on the trot when they face the Box Hill Hawks at Box Hill City Oval on Saturday afternoon. With the Hawks sitting fifth on the ladder, a great test awaits the Demons as they build towards a big finals campaign. berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au
