MORE TO LOVE The editor’s desk On a morning walk along the ocean beaches about 8am last week we came across a boy of about 12 or 13 who was visiting the area from China. He had gone for a walk on his own and was completely lost with no idea of how to find the beach side unit where his parents were staying. Not being familiar with the ocean he told us how he had taken note of the "water puddles" when he arrived on the beach, but they had disappeared (when the tide went out), everything looked the same to him, his phone didn't work and he was visibly distressed. Luckily he spoke English and we phoned his parents using the Chinese area code and with GPS walked him back home. We wondered with the airport expanding and international flights set to increase would more directions be required. ● - Margaret Maccoll

NO MINES ON OUR COAST BY MARGARET MACCOLL The residents of Cooran wrapped up and folded away a fabric black hole on Saturday to symbolically show future coal or gas mines were not welcome to leave such a scar on their landscape. They also presented Noosa MP Sandy Bolton with a signed declaration that she will present to Queensland Parliament to ensure the region will remain free of future mining applications and the current mining exploration licenses that are set to expire in November will be extinguished. The action followed a survey conducted by community group Cooran Earth Rights of 1000 of its 1600 residents which found 99 per cent did not want future coal or gas mining in the region."It's the purest form of democracy that can't be ignored," spokesman Malcolm Pollack said. Noosa Council deputy Mayor Frank Wilkie told the gathering the council was with them and did not support any future permits for coal and gas exploration, saying it was incompatible with Noosa's assets and lifestyle. He said he applauded the spirit of the Cooran community and their determination. Cr Wilkie said Noosa was working toward being carbon neutral by 2026 and creating a less polluted future for future generations. Ms Bolton said the people of Cooran had sent a clear message to the Minister and she was waiting assurance the Noosa electorate

"You showed a united and collective voice is very powerful."Cooran Earth Rights is now working with Geoff Acton and Michael Davis from Zero Carbon Noosa (ZEN) on a Repower Cooran project to help the community find affordable, accessible alternatives to fossil fuels. "Our aim is to set a precedent for other localities, by becoming one of the first net zero emissions villages in Australia," Cooran Earth Rights spokesman John Esson said. ●

NIPPERS DRIVE SUPER SUNDAY SUCCESS BY MARGARET MACCOLL About 100 Nippers signed on at Peregian Beach on Sunday in a recruitment drive held by Noosa Heads Surf Life Saving Club to revive the program at Peregian Beach. The event included demonstrations of life saver activities including beach games and a staged Westpac helicopter rescue of club president Ross Fisher. Children and parents queued from 10am to noon to sign on for training to become a surf life saver. With qualified adult supervisors needed in about a one to five ratio to the Nippers parents were encouraged to sign on with their children to train. Steve Tindal of Noosa SLSC said the training program included information of benefit in general life such as first aid, CPR and surf theory.
Eye on the target.

He said Noosa would support the club initially but the aim was for the club to have enough members to be sustainable. NHSLSC president Ross Fisher said it had been a wonderful day with plenty of positive feedback from Peregian residents and he expected more would sign on to the program in coming weeks.
"I've never seen that many people on the beach at Peregian in the middle of winter," he said. Ross said a program would be be built around the numbers and ages of those who signed on and he was confident of it continuing to grow. ●
Noosa Care Carramar are disappointed they will be forced to cut 16 beds from their proposed 48-bed dementia unit on Cooroy Noosa Road Tewantin to meet Noosa Council development approvals. A spokesperson for the not-for-profit organisation said it was also disappointing their outdoor space would be reduced as the gardens formed part of their dementia model, but generally it was an acceptable outcome. "Our model is best practice for dementia care," she said. "We will follow best practice in our development." The centre's dementia unit currently has 50 people on its waiting list and the cut back in beds will also mean a cut back in proposed staffing. The retirement and dementia care facility was built on a former pineapple farm which had been gifted to the council in the 1970s on the proviso it would be gifted by council for a retirement and dementia facility. The development application was discussed at Noosa Council's General Meeting on Monday. Council's approval recommendations include the dedication of site land as reserve and ongoing work to protect wetland vegetation and habitat including the protection of the area's endangered species of crayfish. Council will decide on the application at its Ordinary Meeting this evening. ●

COVER STORY The documentary Stop the Boats describes the reality on Nauru.
SET THEM FREE N BY MARGARET MACCOLL
oosa teacher Gabby Sutherland was employed by Save the Children as a Design and Technology teacher in Nauru from October 2014 to November 2015. Back in Australia, the experience of these refugees has had a lasting impact on Gabby and other teachers who had to leave them behind. She has since been a whistleblower and advocate for those who remain there even though speaking out may incur penalties for her.
Nauru lies 42km south of the Equator and is 21 square kilometres in size, smaller than Melbourne airport. Gabby described it as an environmental catastrophe composed of phosphate rock where food can't be grown and there's no natural water. The island is so uninhabitable in the 1980s Australia offered the people of Nauru an island in south east Queensland to live on but wanting their independence they refused, she said. When Gabby was there the island had a population of about 13,000 mostly
indigenous Nauruans and about 700 permanent refugees including 128 children. The Australian Government first sent asylum seekers who arrived by boat to be processed in Nauru in September, 2012. Among the reasons the government provided for off shore processing of boat arrivals included the removal of a financial incentive for people smugglers, to secure Australia's borders and to prevent people embarking on a voyage across dangerous seas and face the risk of death. "Some were processed quite quickly
but have been there for five years," Gabby said. "Children have been born on Nauru. When I came to school there were 29 unaccompanied minors aged 14-15 living in the community. Now they're all over 18 so they're unaccompanied adults. They want to be settled in another country. A lot are separated from family." Gabby taught classes from the RPC1 school in an air-condition building which also contained administration and the teacher's accommodation. Their students lived in RPC3.

"When I arrived on Nauru, I was horrified when I saw how people were residing in the RPC3 camp," she said. "The first area I went into was the only air-conditioned accommodation area in the camp - it was for families with babies age four and under. The ground was covered in sharp white rocks. The area in its entirety was unsuitable for a baby's physical development. The shelters, were huge, excessively mouldy tents, made of thick white plastic, internally divided by tarpaulins into tiny compartments for beds. There was no shade in this area and the outside heat was extreme and debilitating. "Over time, I went into other areas of the camp, including the non-air-conditioned family areas and SAF areas. The closest comparison I can make after spending time inside these living quarters is standing, sitting or sleeping inside an industrial strength garbage bag in the middle of the Australian desert from dawn to dusk, for 12 hours. If a child in Australia was sleeping in these conditions their parents would be charged with abuse and neglect. People were not allowed to have food, water bottles for vessels or chairs in their rooms. Raids were carried out and contraband items were confiscated. "Whilst many things have changed in Nauru, these areas remain the same today, only with further deterioration." The teachers would pick the kids up in the morning often to discover they'd had a rough night. They'd have trouble sleeping or they'd hear cries at night from people depressed or suicidal. It was an abhorrent environment for children to be in, she said "The kids loved coming to school," Gabby said. "There was about 93-95 per cent attendance. They got away from the camp. School was their escape." The teachers followed the Australian curriculum and Gabby taught them life skills such as cooking, sewing and enterprise creating through jewellery-making that they would be able to use when they left the camp. "Once they got refugee status and moved into the community they'd have to learn to survive on their own," she said. They set up a café the Red Rose Café, which the children loved. They cooked and waited on tables. It was like a piece of real life for them. But the café was shut down by the authorities. Gabby said in the camp their lives were completely controlled. They were told when to eat, shower, how long they could shower. They had no money. The security was very tight and the children were scanned going in and out of school. As time went by the conditions at the camp affected the kids. In addition to the appalling living
Gabby Sutherland shows the faces of the children detained on Nauru. conditions, other factors that lead to selfharm can be attributed to the constant torment, extreme confinement, and denial of civil liberties. Kids have seen people die, people set fire to themselves. "They can't handle the situation any more," Gabby said. "These people have come from traumatic backgrounds." "During the school day there were multiple issues. Some students had selfharmed, some had sewed their lips together, some were put on anti-psychotic drugs to deal with the situation. Kids would come in dehydrated. They'd have dengue fever, sores on their legs. There's no running water. They have to walk a long way for water. We had kids on bean bags at the back of the classroom just crying. Those people have been there too long. There's a lack of knowledge of when they're going to be free, when they're going to be settled.

Gabby said 90 per cent of refugees agreed to go to the US and while some did go the US deal to accept Australian refugees in offshore detention too a long time and during that time Trump banned certain ethnic groups. "Eighteen months after they were told they'd be settled in the US they were told they can't go because they're Iranian or Sudanese," Gabby said. "Many became depressed because of the indefinite detention". Gabby said because they're hidden away on a remote island people in Australia don't have a connection with them and compassion to understand the situation. "We have to start questioning why we put them on remote islands to live in plastic tents. It's not healthy," she said."And the costs of keeping them there are astronomical. Everything has to be shipped in - food, building materials, school supplies. When I was there 25,000 water

bottles a fortnight were sent." According to the Refugee Council of Australia in 2017-18 $714 million was forecast to be spent on offshore processing but the estimate was doubled to $1.48 billion and was forecast to halve in 2018-19. "I've been quite a whistleblower since I came off Nauru," Gabby said. "As an advocate I try to give a voice to what's happening now. It's still horrendous and people are desperate to get out. They need to be reunited with their families and get on with their lives." On World Humanitarian Day on Saturday 18 August at 6.30pm a film titled Stop the Boats which documents the lives of asylum seekers in Nauru and Manus Island will be sceened at Event Cinemas, Noosa Junction. COMMUNITY CALLS HALT ON HEIGHT BY MARGARET MACCOLL Thousands of residents descended on Tickle Park, Coolum on Saturday morning to rally against what they regarded as the continuing approval by Sunshine Coast Council of "inappropriate development" outside the guidelines of its planning scheme and resulting destruction of flora and fauna. There were numerous placards including some saying "This wouldn't happen in Noosa", community organisations set up information stalls and signatures were collected on petitions calling for development in line with the planning scheme. "We're not against development," Friends of Yaroomba spokeswoman Julie Faloar said. "We're against inappropriate development." Julie said the rally had brought together a variety of community groups and the group's Facebook page had 18,000 supporters. "A lot of people feel strongly about this," she said. "We expect council to abide by the Sunshine Coast planning scheme 2014. The document cost $15m to put together and gives us an assurance of what will be built in the community." Sunshine Coast Environment Council spokeswoman Narelle McCarthy said there had been "a litany of developments approved" that had gone against the planning scheme. "The impacts of
these decisions will have widespread repercussions," she said. Narelle described the rally as a watershed moment. She said there had been enough development approved to accommodate projected population increases and called for more community engagement. "Our strength is in our assets," she said. Organisation of Sunshine Coast Residents Association (OSCAR) president Greg Smith said the diverse demographics of the rally showed the breadth of concern expressed by the community. ●

The coast was treated to a festival with rides galore and delicious foods catered for by Sunshine Coast food trucks. The rides entertained children well into the evening until the spectacular fireworks completed the successful day. P&C Secretary Jill Jerrom said the food fair was not held as a fundraiser. "We just wanted everyone to have fun," she said. Students responded with one saying "it was like being in Disneyland".The school's P&C committee ensured that the event catered for all members of the school and wider community. The school is an accredited International School that makes an appreciation of new cultures a part of the learning process. To the surprise of many parents, children sampled foods that they had never tried before with the encouragement of international students. ●

PROVIDING SOME INSIGHT INTO POLITICS BY CAROLYN MEDLOBY (YEAR 12 STUDENT) Noosa District State High School Year 12 Social and Community Studies students welcomed Noosa Councillor Jess Glasgow and Noosa MP Sandy Bolton to their classroom last week. The special guests shared stories from their lives and insights into their essential roles working in the local and state government. Cr Glasgow and Ms Bolton also assisted the students with their assignment on planning a community event. Ms Bolton discussed some difficult topical issues that will be matters for review and debate in parliament including the decriminalisation of abortion, legalisation of medicinal marijuana and the provision of voluntary euthanasia for terminally ill Queenslanders . Ms Bolton said voluntary euthanasia was a matter that was very important to her Noosa constituents. "This is about being a humane and fair society and by giving terminal patients a choice," Ms Bolton said. Ms Bolton told the students how she had to leave school at 14 to work as her mother couldn't afford to keep her in school. "I lived in poverty and it was hard living in financial hardship, but it forced me to take on a lot of responsibilities early on," Ms Bolton said. Ms Bolton is currently the only
Noosa MP Sandy Bolton with students. independent member in the Queensland parliament. "I chose to be an independent as I felt as though all the other political parties were failing us. I wanted to have my own opinion and help the community in my own way instead of towing a party line and specific agenda," Ms Bolton said.
Cr Glasgow shared his experience of working with the Noosa Council and told students the top complaints the council receives are regarding parking fines and barking dogs. "As a councillor, we don't work for ourselves, we work for the community," Cr Glasgow said
Cr Glasgow attended Sunshine Beach State High School, and he attained an interest in politics when a politician visited his school and spoke to his class. "I knew then that I wanted to become a politician myself," he said. ●

RON LANE’S PEOPLE
RON LANE
Nick Farr-Jones, Tom Lawton, Micheal O'Connor and Donald McKill.
DOLPHINS JUST LOVE A LONG LUNCH It was indeed another day with the Noosa community at its best. With a day that can only be described as being touched by the Hand of God, some 170 plus, supporters’ sponsors and players gathered for yet another famous Dolphins Rugby Union (fund raising) Long Lunch. Following close on the heels of the Noosa Prostate Association Fund Raising Lunch, these functions have shown us that not only does our community have a big heart but it is also in the right place. In his opening address of welcome President Donald McKill thanked all for attending in particular those who travelled some distance to be present. He then went on to acknowledge the achievements of both the players and coaching staff and in particular the dedication of the dirty dozen, those tireless workers who exist in every
club and silently go about their business of making their club one of the best . He then went on to acknowledging his major sponsors Ray White, Madills, Doonan Sand and Gravel and Bedarra Island Resort. Regarding sponsorship he made an interesting comment when he said, “It is interesting to note that these people and our other sponsors also make outstanding contributions to other clubs and organisations throughout our community; it is not just to us here at the Dolphins Rugby Club. This I feel we should publicly acknowledge.” In a very touching and sometimes emotional recognition of the contribution made by members now deceased, club man Shane Raison came to the speakers lectern and recited his poem entitled The Dolphins In The Sky ; indeed a very fitting
tribute- well received. Following this Sam Robinson was introduced to the guests. It is this man who is the driving force behind Hearts in Union, a charity organization which has been formed to give every possible assistance financial and other, to former rugby players who suffered spinal and other crippling injuries. Apart from supporting the Dolphins club this was the major reason for the luncheon. Robinson first thanked the host club for last year’s donation of $3,500. He then explained their work ; helping with the recovery programs, housing problems, purchasing suitable vehicles and on a social level getting them, whenever possible to major rugby games- in particular the Internationals. ‘’This,’’ added the President, ‘’gives us the opportunity to keep them
within the Rugby community.” After an excellent meal complemented by a nice bottle of red and the pleasant voice of singer Brad Schultz in the background, the guest speakers (all of legendary status) were introduced; Michael O’Connor dual international (union and rugby league) who was to act as M.C. for the discussions, Nick Farr- Jones former Wallaby captain, who played 63 tests for Australia and Tom Lawnton who played 41. To finalise the fund raising an auction of nights’ accommodation at various tourist resorts was conducted and under the control of Ray Whites auctioneer Justin Sykes, it was indeed very successful. The club extended their sincere thanks to all resorts that made the donations possible; a great ending to yet another very worthy community charity luncheon conducted by- our people. ●

ARE YOU SICK OF HAVING DIFFERENT CARERS ARRIVE? Home Care Assistance provides in-home support for people aged over 65 or with a disability. They pride themselves on being on the forefront of industry reform, by offering clients choice and control over their services and delivering a high quality, personalised service with lower fees. One of their main focuses is carer consistency - having one or two carers that you know well, and that know your routine and wishes. If you want to contact Home Care Assistance you can call any time of day or night. 24 hours per day, 7 days per week there will be a friendly voice to answer your query and support you needs. A big focus of service delivery is consistent carers so you know who is coming and they get to know your routines and wishes. Home Care Assistance has very high rates of client satisfaction. One client recently spoke and said “with our old provider I was banned from
being present at the services. I felt sick ringing them because of the way they treated me. Since March when we changed to HCA, we are stress free and so happy. The quality of life has returned for both of us and we want to tell the world.“ Home Care Assistance has moved away from the traditional way of delivering home care services that is very task based, to a more holistic model where social connections, brain health, nutrition and personal happiness are focuses of care planning. Home care is very much about supporting you to have quality of life and achieve the things YOU want, not about someone coming in and taking over. Home Care can support you with anything that relates to your care. Value for money is also important at Home Care Assistance with lower fees, and no entry or exit fees. This means that there is more money for you to spend on the things that matter to you. ●

COMPLEX HEALTH BY HOLLIE HARRIS As the number of older people increases in Australia, so too does the complexity of the management of chronic health concerns. As general practitioners, our challenge is to provide appropriate care of the highest quality to older people regardless of where they are living. General practitioners working collaboratively with other health providers play a key role in delivering high quality primary care to older people living in residential aged care settings. There are increased opportunities for improving quality of care for residents by all members of the multidisciplinary team. Australian Government initiatives provide for general practitioners to carry out comprehensive medical assessments and contribute to residents' care plans. There is also provision for residential medication management reviews, and referrals to allied health and dental services. Advance care planning and access to new models for end of life care are also included; stressing the importance of the involvement of the resident, their family and residential aged care facility staff. Skin Cancer Diagnosis and Management "Approximately, two in three Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer by the time they are 70, with more than 750,000
people treated for one or more nonmelanoma skin cancers in Australia each year. Non-melanoma skin cancer is more common in men, with almost double the incidence compared to women." Cancer Council Australia The sooner a skin cancer is identified and treated, the better your chance of avoiding surgery or, in the case of a serious melanoma or other skin cancer, potential disfigurement or even death. It is also a good idea to talk to your doctor about your level of risk and for advice on early detection. It's important to get to know your skin and what is normal for you, so that you notice any changes. Skin cancers rarely hurt and are much more frequently seen than felt. Develop a regular habit of checking your skin for new spots and changes to existing freckles or moles. Dr Desh Jayasinghe Is committed to the early detection of skin cancer and as such utilises the Gold Standard of care in skin cancer detection. Fully trained in cross polarised dermoscopic skin examination, dermascopic digital photography and both simple and complex skin cancer surgery. Desh is accredited with the Skin Cancer College of Australasia. To book an appointment, please call 5449 7600 or go to our website www.noosaclinic. com.au to book an online appointment. ●

ASK AND YE MAY RECEIVE It is perhaps hard not to be cynical when one reads the call for three specifically qualified community volunteer directors for service with the NBRF. Given what I and others have written about, as our opinion, of a living unfolding tragedy, the news that expertise is sought in governance, philanthropy and communications could easily be decried as an admission of guilt of past inadequacies. So let’s hope they get what they ask for and that fresh, determined minds, change the leopard's spots. As Brutus said sardonically, “So let it be with Caesar.” To such candidates we offer these simple suggestions, apart from what your own due diligence and discovery might reveal. Challenge, question and query to get to the best decisions for our biosphere. Seek to make a beneficial difference. Now to the matter of the 10-year Man and Biosphere Review. Been left a bit late, hasn’t it? Good heavens! Something as important as one's licence to operate is not a last-minute thing. So, a rush! A consultant's job. No community consultation to point to. A narrow focused set of forward criteria. I am reminded of Alice when, in her travels in Wonderland as she reached a fork in the road. Pondering, she asked the Cheshire cat, “Which way should I go?" to which the cat replied, “That depends a good deal on where you want to get to.” Looks like the foundation is equally confused and undecided if it's left the story of 10 years of effort to the last. It should make interesting reading if ever made public. Michael Donovan, Noosa

COAL CONTINUES The latest battle over energy policy is a reminder that Australian environment policy has been long broken. In 1992, Australia signed and ratified the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), but it became evident that that Australia’s National Greenhouse Response Strategy was not worth the paper it was written on. This document contained only voluntary measures, and did not drive emis-

If you would like to send us your landscape, wildlife or lifestyle shots, email us at newsdesk@noosatoday.com.au sion reductions. In fact, emissions grew and more coal-fired power stations were developed. Since 2014 and the demise of Julia Gillard’s carbon pricing scheme, Australia has been in an environmental policy paralysis and any decisions that have been made were shambolic or resulted in reactionary backflips. The Clean Energy Target proposed by scientist Alan Finkel proved too hard for government implementation. Now, Federal Environment Minister Josh Frydenberg is championing his National Energy Guarantee (NEG). This new energy policy requires the support of all the states
and territories, and this seems unlikely. Some members of parliament have made it very clear that they will not relinquish Australia’s ties to the coal industry, with Nationals George Christensen MP leading the charge with a visit to Japan in search of new money for coal power. Many are also very critical of the NEG’s shortcomings as a tool to drive down emissions and prices. Unfortunately, there is no credible alternative to the NEG and it certainly needs more work as there are major concerns that it does not genuinely address the issue of climate change.
Both major parties in Australia will never risk the introduction of an environmental policy that will have effectual, lasting and immediate reductions in emissions due to the ramifications this will have on Australia coal industry and Australian economy. The NEG is simply a perfunctory gesture, which allows for the continuation of the depredation of finite resources and the ruination of the environment. Bridge Muir, Cooroy

Recent landscaping work has given lot 12 an outstanding outlook over the 17th green, lakes and fairways.
TAKE A SWING AT HEAVEN WHEN the remaining three blocks in The Oasis precinct are sold, the Noosa Springs residential community - 20 years in the making - will be complete. All 270 prestige home sites in this remarkable settlement, surrounding the Noosa Springs Golf and Spa Resort, will have been claimed. A month ago, five Oasis blocks were still on the market. But, inevitably, home sites of this quality will be snapped up by buyers keen to take up residence in a secure, gated precinct, with easy access to the resort facilities. Bob Goode, who is responsible for marketing the remaining blocks, described them as being large, with commanding views over the golf course and tropical woodlands. “Lot 17 is considered ‘the’ block if price isn’t a barrier,” Mr Goode said. “It has a panoramic outlook over water, the golf course and other villas in the district. “Lot 19 embraces the golf course atmosphere, but is far enough away to offer privacy. It’s a larger block with views of the 11th green and 12th fairway. “Lot 12 has the lowest price entry. Recent landscaping work has resulted in an outstanding outlook over the 17th green, lakes and fairways. If buyers decided to build a double-storey home the views would be even more extensive.” Builders are currently working on six new homes in the exclusive Oasis precinct, which comprises only 27 sites. Although an integral part of the Noosa Springs community, The Oasis has its own body corporate, dedicated to the management and maintenance of its parkland and streetscapes. The homes already completed comprise a mix of a single storey and double storey. Most have at least four bedrooms, 24 NOOSA TODAY

SOCIAL SCENE
HATS ARE OFF TO TOP CHEFS The idea to celebrate the talents of Noosa’s top chefs culminated last Thursday in Hats Off, an event that brought together five of the best local chefs to deliver a five-course dinner at Noosa Waterfront Restaurant and Bar, Noosaville. All chefs have been awarded a Chef Hat by the Good Food Guide. They were Zeb Gilbert (Wasabi), Josh Smallwood (Rickys), Chris Hagan (Long Apron), Nick Blake (Wild Forage Australia) and Andrea Ravezzani (Noosa Waterfront). The dishes were topped off with matching wines by Hay Shed Hill, presented by owner and winemaker Michael Kerrigan. The laughter and conversation in the restaurant was testament to the enjoyment of the evening while in the kitchen it became a chef ’s club with each sharing their cooking secrets and helping each other deliver the dishes. Each dish arrived on the table looking like a work of art and composed predominately of local ingredients prepared in an array of complicated and technical methods. From the Noosa Scallops and Mooloolaba seafood to the pecan smoked Angus ox heart and slow cooked mutton
Winemaker Michael Kerrigan. each was a taste sensation explained by the chefs before serving. Zeb Gilbert told the guests of sourcing ingredients from their own Honeysuckle Hill farm. Andrea Ravezzani spoke about doing something different and creating

The new EP sees Greedy and Martin trading songs in their time-honoured tradition. Martin is currently off the road but Greedy and he are still creating new songs with that unmistakable unique Mental flavour. Greedy: "Martin and I have spent our lives competing with songs. The Black Sorrows have earned the reputation as a dynamic live act and they are coming to the Tewantin Noosa RSL Sunday 26 August. There is a level of accessibility to The Black Sorrows that can appeal to the newest of fan. At the helm, Camilleri steers the band through an energetic interplay of solid grooves and well-crafted songs that mix those well-worn ingredients of blues, soul, R&B, gospel, country and even Brill Building pop. Spontaneous (forget set lists) and emotionally driven, Joe ensures that no two performances are ever the same. Camilleri's mantra is simple "we come to play and leave the audience feeling exhilarated." And play they do; Joe Camilleri and The Black Sorrows backed up their late 2016 60-date national tour promoting The Sorrows' 18th album release Faithful Satellite with a 2017 summer tour then shows in the UK and Europe. Never being one to sit still Joe and his long-term writing partner Nick Smith at it again getting ready for a new release. The Black Sorrows continue to be one of Australia's most enduring touring bands and a festival favourite. Membership in The Black Sorrows has always been loose and fluid with Camilleri being the only constant.

"I'm sure it will be the same for the folk who come to hear us. "I've always been a great fan of Frank Sinatra. I've just loved his swing and his swagger and it's a thrill to be able to join with the choir and our two wonderful musicians, Adrian King and Janet Brewer, to sing songs like "New York New York" and "I've Got the World on a String" in our special six-song tribute to him. "Melbourne singer Juliarna Clark has become a Noosa favourite with her Noosa Alive appearance last year and her concerts with us.

Nigel Date and Peter Locke are Sydney musicians, husband and wife, James and Juliarna Clark and Rodney Gilbert from Melbourne and Paul Williams from Peregian. FOCUS ON … Pengari Festival
SCHOOL PLANS ZERO WASTE TO LANDFILL BY HOLLIE HARRIS Noosa Pengari Steiner School are set to host a super clean and environmentally friendly Children's Festival this year. With a vision of creating a "zero waste to landfill" event and with some well-established sustainability practices developed over the past 3 years, the Festival Team are very driven to achieving this goal. "Everyone involved in the preparation of the festival is focused on sustainability and that is what makes this school's sustainability plan work. A significant aim for Pengari Festival for 2018 and beyond is to create zero waste for landfill" says Sustainability Coordinator, Bernadette O'Grady. In efforts to achieve this goal the festival will be plastic free and all cutlery, plates and cups provided on the day will be compostable and can be placed after use into large compost bins which will be positioned at numerous bin stations throughout the festival. Every effort is put in place in the preparation of the festival to ensure that on the day the vast majority of waste created will be able to go straight back to the earth right at the school. "The compost created from last year's festival is now in use and composting materials are being prepared in readiness for making this years festival compost heap. The compost heap will rot down in place in the months that follow the festival and later, Noosa Pengari school
children will make use of the compost in their gardening classes. Many months after the festival the energy from the festival will be able to be used again in a new form at the school" says O'Grady. Pengari Festival's focus on sustainability makes a significant contribution to the festival's overall "feel good" factor on festival
day. The children will be able to be creative making crafts from natural materials at numerous craft stalls, families will be able to eat delicious wholesome home cooked food, cakes will be predominantly organic, adults and children will be able to enjoy live music, and all activities will be focused on creative fun through nature. So if you are interested
in a clean, green, family day out then make your way to Noosa Pengari Steiner School's Pengari Children's festival. You will be able to enjoy taking part in an event that cares for nature from start to finish, from preparations months in advance, to the evening after festival when the compost heap begins. ●

BY HOLLIE HARRIS Noosa Pengari Steiner School is situated on 25 acres in Doonan and has been in operation since 1996. As with all Steiner schools, staff endeavour to educate equally the areas of academia, artistic expression and practical skill, (the head, heart and hands) in an integrated way. The teachers are inspired by the work of Rudolf Steiner, encouraging them to assist the children to develop a lifelong love of learning, a reverence for life and the courage to live fully. The social education of children is enhanced through deepening their relationships with peers and teachers with whom they work and grow developing an atmosphere of support, co-operation and commitment. Steiner was a pioneer in developmentally based, age appropriate learning, which acknowledges that children of different ages learn in different ways. Thus, in Steiner schools, not only the curriculum but also the way that information is brought to the child, needs to change to suit their age-related needs. The preschool child learns by doing and by imitating the deeds of those around them. They need rhythm, purpose and
time for creative play. Children of this age are not too quickly dragged out of the dreamy world of childhood - they are allowed to be children. From age seven to fourteen, the focus changes to the rich life of the imagination and heartfelt feeling. Children study each curriculum area in Main Lesson blocks for a solid two hours every morning for three weeks, enabling them to totally absorb themselves in the excitement and wonder of a topic. Artistic expression of the students is nurtured as an integral part of their academic learning. The high school curriculum is designed to challenge students, to build skills and knowledge, to encourage a continual love of learning in the young adult. At this age, students deepen their understanding of the world and of themselves. Noosa Pengari's aim is to guide into the world students on the brink of adulthood - confident in their ability to learn in whatever direction they take; flexible and resilient when life takes its unexpected turns and loving and compassionate to those who they interact with in life. "Waldorf education is not a pedagogical system, but an art- the art of awakening what is actually there within the human being." Rudolf Steiner ●

2017'S Australian Craft Beer Survey by Beer Cartel WAS the largest, publicly available, study of Australian craft beer trends. 17,000 craft beer drinkers took part in providing an extremely accurate birds-eye view of this young and exciting industry. Key findings from the research include: · Brewery ownership is important: 64 percent want to know who owns the beer they're drinking. · There is a strong preference for craft beer from independently owned Australian breweries: 99 percent are happy to buy craft beer from an independent Australian owned brewery. In comparison just 23 percent are happy to buy craft beer from a large multi-national company and 32 percent from super market owned brands. · There is strong interest for a seal to identify whether a beer is from an independent Australian brewery: 82 percent indicated that an independent brewers seal would have a medium to large impact on the craft beer that they purchase. · Pirate Life is Australia's best craft brewery: voted number one by Australian craft beer drinkers, ahead of Feral Brewing which took out the top position in last year's study. · Pale Ale reigns as Australia's most consumed craft beer style: Pale Ale is enjoyed by 92 percent of craft beer drinkers Australia-wide. ●

HIKING WITH A TREKKING COACH BY HOLLIE HARRIS Hiking takes us places on foot that are pristine, untouched and beautiful. It also takes our minds to a similar kind of place. That's why it's so addictive. Being out in nature, discovering new places, experiencing the buzz of climbing your first summit, or reaching the end of a long trail you have been hiking all day, is a feeling that stays with you. It's a mind-body-spirit experience for sure! Whatever that feeling might be for you, it's one of adventure, awe and fulfillment. It reminds us of being a child again. It encourages us to look after
our bodies and minds, to aim to be strong, fit and able bodied so we can get out there and adventure for many years to come. But local Trek Coach Lisa Marshall say "This isn't something we should wait to do "one day" or "when I'm older," No way - hiking is for all ages, and the sooner you start, the more you will get out of it," says Lisa. Hiking is different to walking round the block. Hiking on uneven terrain challenges our bodies more, so our metabolic rate goes up and we burn more calories. We are also required to focus more, because the terrain is constantly changing, and this means being
more present. The mental health benefits are far reaching too. Psychologist have even established a specialised area of their practice called Adventure Therapy. There are countless studies showing the mental and physical benefits of Green Exercise. Adventure Travel is one of the fastest growing sectors in the travel industry, as many seek to escape their every day life, or to find that "something" that they feel is missing. They want to have an active goal to get fit for, rather than sitting by the pool drinking cocktails for a week and feeling awful at the end of it. Trek Coach specialises in showing you how to make Adventure a part of your life. Lisa Marshall has over 12 years experience in Adventure Fitness, and has coached people all over the world to take on treks like climbing Mt Kilimanjaro, hiking the Kokoda Trail, trekking across Corsica on the GR20, walking 100k endurance events and many more local Australian and NZ
treks. Lisa has trekked all over the world and taken on many ultra endurance walking events. If you want to add some weekly adventure fitness to your life, or you have a bucket list trip you want to train for, come and join Lisa in Noosa on Wednesdays and Fridays 9-1.30am for a Fitnesstrek session. First session free! www.trekcoach.com.au/fitness/ You can also join Trek Coach teams for upcoming Adventuretreks both near and far. Lisa is currently training teams to walk the Scenic Rim Trail in September - there are 3 spots left. www.trekcoach.com.au/ project/scenic-rim-trail-september-2018/ and The Great Noosa Trail Walk in October. Lisa prepares you for your adventure with expertise on what to wear, the latest gear info, how to train for altitude or endurance hikes, what to expect on your first trek, how to take care of your feet on long distance hikes, cold weather tips, hydration and more. ●

DRAGONS ARE REALLY FIRED UP BY SCOTT GRIGGS, COACH
Keith Bremner and Noel Ross
TOP RIDE FOR MATES For the past five years Keith Bremner and Noel Ross have come to Noosa from the Gold Coast to cycle in the Strade Bianche, regarded as Australia's premier vintage cycling festival for steel-framed bikes with downtime shifters. Conducted in the vein of the famous L'Eroica in Italy the event includes a vintage bicycle show and three rides through the Noosa hinterland at distances of 33km,
82km and 135km. Noel said it was the friendly atmosphere and the camaraderie that kept them coming back. He praised the restaurants and cafes that came on board and provided coffees and meals along the journey. "It's a very special thing," he said."We've got guys who come from Perth and Darwin." Keith who took part in the 135km ride said it was a tough ride with the challenge of
BOOST FOR SOFTBALL In a huge boost to the Noosa sporting community, the Noosa District Softball Association (Softball Noosa) has been successful in obtaining significant funding to upgrade their facilities and amenities under the State Government's Female Facilities Program. "The injection of nearly $200,000 makes for a much-improved venue that ultimately means more residents and visitors will be able to participate in sport and be active which contributes to our community's health and well-being," Noosa MP Sandy Bolton said. Under the funding approval, Softball Noosa will receive $199,946 for the upgrading of two change rooms to include eight unisex toilets, seven unisex showers, noosatoday.com.au
three unisex change rooms, one toilet for people with a disability, parents' room, and construction of an undercover area. As well the installation of safety lighting to support female participation. "We want and need more girls and women, as well boys and men, to engage in sport. With these improvements, that is made possible, and there is also opportunity for the club to attract regional events that also supports our businesses through grassroots, community events. This is a great outcome in multiple ways" she said. Noosa District Softball Association president Richard Wakeham said these funds would be very warmly welcomed at the Noosa District Sports Complex located on Butler Street. ●
plenty of steep inclines and declines, many on gravel roads. Keith's company Jakazni each year creates exclusive bike wear for the event. Strade Bianche organiser Warren Smith said about 300 participated in the rides and about 2500 came to see the show at the Noosa Marina and enjoy the music and ambience. He said while bike display numbers were down on last year, riders were on the increase. ●

The U7s played their best game yet against the Noosa Dolphins. With great team work and elusive running and timely passing from all of our players. Brodie picked up man of the man for an all round performance. We are starting to get a great understanding of the game and improve each week. Under-9s By Scott Long After a challenging game last week against the Noosa Fins the dedication of both the boys and the coaching team shone through for the last home game of the 2018 season against Maroochydore. It was a fantastic match-up to watch. The first half was a tight battle with both teams tackling and running the ball hard. Maroochydore led by one try at the half which fired up the home team! After another close battle in the second half the game ended up a draw with both teams scoring 6 great tries. The Dragons notched up a fantastic tackle total of 61 with standout tackling from Craig, Jack S, Patrick, Tom and Jett. The forwards shone today at the breakdown showing hunger for the ball with great driving support. Jett capitalised on the strength of the forwards scoring some outstanding tries. Jack S won Man of the Match for a combination of both intimidating defence and offensive runs. Tom also stood up today with some great runs and aggressive defence. The boys did themselves, their team, their coaches and their parents proud on the last home game of the Season. ●

Seniors Match report The Rococo's Bar and Bistro Noosa Tigers have gone down by the smallest of margins in front of a strong Sunshine Coast following under lights last Saturday night. Our second night game of season 2018 attracted a fantastic 1300 plus crowd who witnessed a see-sawing battle between Suncoast rivals Noosa and the young and vibrant Caloundra Panthers. The home side jumped the young Panthers in the first quarter with superior ball movement and some excellent finishing work up forward to lead by just under 4 goals at the first break. From then on it was a much more desperate and hard working Panthers outfit who clawed their way back and over the middle two quarters began to have an obvious advantage in general play. With the final stanza to play it was Caloundra by a couple of goals and looking ominous. The last quarter was a thrilling affair as Noosa made a late charge and were even pushing forward in the dying seconds only for the siren to sound and go down by a solitary point. The 34 minute final quarter had the entire gathering on the edge of their seats and whilst the loss was disappointing to the Noosa faithful; most there were impressed by the way the Steve Moody coached the Panthers. The two sides look like meeting again in a fortnight when 2nd hosts 3rd in a major qualifying final which again will be held at Weyba Road.
However it's Burleigh away this Saturday to finish the season on a positive note for the 2nd placed Noosa Tigers. The best on Saturday night was Kent Delbridge who bagged six goals after missing the past five weeks in a great performance with Jai Fitzpatrick. Skipper Aaron Laskey battled hard for his team the entire night whilst on-baller Tyler Stack and Nick Hill tried in vain to get the Tigers across the line. No massive concerns over the loss, however maybe just the hiccup we need before finals begin in two weeks. A massive President's Dinner was had by all for season 2018 with many thanks to ex Carlton and Sydney champion David Rhys Jones for his presence and also a big thank you to all those who donated auction items for our gala auction; which again was a great success. Good luck to all Tiger teams on the weekend Cheers Pittsy JUNIOR REPORTS Noosa Under 12 - Div 1 With a few key injuries we had to ask everyone to step up this week and create the momentum coming up to finals. With the assistance of young Riley Mackay in his first game in under 12s coming from the under 10s, he certainly didn't look out of place and held his own. On a windy day the emphasis was on backing our skills and hard work. Everybody stood up with a convincing win over Coolum. Our usual suspects once again had outstanding games, Josh, Ethan S, Luke, Jordy, Cooper, Zac and Jago. It was great having Beau back and Ben Allen was

outstanding. But what really impressive was those who played above their normal standard showing their improvements every week, Drew, Ethan D, Tom and Saxon. It was great to see our defence holding up with Harry and Ben strong all day, and Toby showing great poise and making smart decisions. Jada tried hard on one leg again, Kai and Sam ran hard all day. Thanks to all the parents that assisted especially Phil for umpiring. Let's keep up the momentum for our last home and away next week. Coach Ray Noosa Under 14- Div 2 Despite a gallant effort, Noosa Red fell just short of an upset win when it took on the Coolum Breakers on Sunday. The Tigers went in as massive under dogs against the second top team however held their own for the entire match. The boys should be proud of the significant improvements they have made during the season and have developed into a great team. In tough and windy conditions, the final score was Coolum 4.8.32 to Noosa 3.4.22. Nick Cuthbertson was superb all day and did not stop trying to get his team over the line. Similarly, Liam Switzer took on the solo ruck duties and tried his best all game. Arkie Thorson played his best game of the year and picked up a heap of possessions on his wing. The Tigers take on top team Caloundra in their last home and away game this Sunday. Youth Girls Report Two girl's games played last Sunday both on the back oval at Weyba Road. Our under 13 girls came up against a very well drilled and tall Maroochy Flyers who dominated the match after a very even opening quarter. They eventually ran out six goals victors above our girls. Jemima Ward was the best for the Tigers whilst Charli Brown, Kaiya Hides and Natasha Monaghan battled on well for the second placed tigers. The under 15 girls followed on the back oval against a strong and confident Kawana outfit with the Noosa girls just outstanding in the second quarter kicking six goals to zip to set up their victory. The tiger girls eventually ran out 10 goal victors to finish the day on a high. Maggie Harmer and Hannah Mckenzie were the catalysts behind the victory with both deserving best on ground honours. Imogen Van Der Vegt (six goals) and Keana Welsh were not far behind them. The win cements the Noosa girls spot in second place and a definite double chance come finals. Well Done girls! Go tigers ●

LIFE OF BRINE
PHIL JARRATT
PARADISE IS WHERE YOU FIND IT
Beach construction site. world countries where they operate, which is a noble but increasingly difficult prospect on Bali, a small, once-rural island where every construction of a resort hotel diminishes the land stock for agriculture. Farmland has been disappearing for tourism projects at a rate of 3000 hectares a year for the past 15 years, and as local produce becomes scarcer, more overladen trucks rumble along the two-lane highway from the Java ferry to feed the tourists. Bali now imports more than 600,000 tonnes of rice a year from Vietnam, India and Myanmar. It's a dire situation, made worse by the fact that tourism developers get tax breaks while the disappearing farmers get no subsidies. When it comes to working the family land for peanuts or selling it to a developer, it's a no-brainer. As I've said in this space before, after 45 years, we're joined at the hip to Bali, its people, its culture, even its nowcrowded waves. But maybe it's time to look further afield. This past week I also had an interesting conversation, via a crackly Skype that kept dropping out, with old mate Martin Daly, the Australian surf charter skipper who has discovered more perfect waves than anyone on the planet. Tiring of jockeying for an anchorage at many of the surf breaks he found a generation ago,
Small, fun, glassy day at our river mouth local, now known as “Bulldozers."
Martin’s slice of paradise. Photo courtesy indiestrader.com
Martin has set up home in a most unlikely paradise. Beran Island is a tiny atoll in the Marshalls archipelago, about 300 nautical miles from Bikini Atoll, chiefly famous for being the testing ground for American atomic and hydrogen bombs in the 1940s and '50s. The Marshall Islands has the twin distinctions of being the only country in the world that is de-populating (its residents decamping for the American Midwest as soon as they are able) and the country least visited by tourists. It's also the world's largest shark sanctuary and, at less than two metres above sea level at its highest point, the country most susceptible to inundation from rising sea levels. The capital and only supply station, Majuro, is a 20-hour sail from Beran and, according to Daly, is
mostly crumbling huts and graveyards for pickup trucks. Perhaps not surprisingly, Martin runs the country's only tourist operation, taking divers, scientists and surfers on atoll runs from his deepwater dock at Beran. He told me: "Beran is quite remote and hard to get into, so hopefully it'll stay unpopulated for a long time. And we've made it really comfortable. Every morning I wake up here I go, how the hell did this happen! From my bed I'm looking at blue water and a beautiful point break with no one on it. So the plan is to sail off into the sunset here, hopefully getting a few waves for as long as I can, then sit in a rocking chair next to my wife and watch them peel by empty while I work on my shell collection and she knits pullovers for the grandkids." ●

The pounding beat of "progress" has finally caught up with us in the village that has been our Bali haven these past seven or eight years. The bulldozers are on the beach, the dump trucks hurtle down our lane day and night. Of course we always knew that this was going to happen, that it was only a matter of time before the ugly urban sprawl of the Kuta/Legian/Seminyak/Canggu megapolis spread its tentacles over the simple family compounds, temples and warungs of our neighbourhood. But it doesn't make it any easier to watch it happen. It's just eight months since our last visit but the pace of change has accelerated so much that parts of the village are almost unrecognizable. Having lived through the sealing of the Legian road, the introduction of electricity and refrigeration, a road being built into Uluwatu, the substitution of plastic bags for banana leaf wrappers, and the first glass windows in shops, I should be impervious to culture shock, but I'm not. It pains me to see the blind corruption that allows development on land zoned "green corridors" and the demise of another 20 rice fields between us and the beach, where a massive rock-based beachwalk is being constructed to allow access to still more over-priced doof-doof beach clubs at the probable cost of the rock and sand-based surf breaks out in front. We could move a little further west, of course, to the sprinkle of untouched villages closer to Tanah Lot, but Trump interests in conjunction with some local wide boys are about to unleash an even bigger monster in sight of the holy temple - a massive resort development that will compound traffic havoc over the 30 kilometres from the airport. It seems we are caught in a wedge. But let's look on the bright side. Trendy cafes are springing up all over, where once were hard-bench warungs serving three varieties of nasi goreng. Now it's a short walk to a chic Brazilian fish joint, a cool sushi bar and lounge, and an Italian with a decent wine list. We've tried them all, with some success, but guess what? We're back at the corner warung and the great comfort, not to mention attractive price, of fried rice and cold beer. This week I had an interesting lunch with a woman who is the head nutritionist for one of the world's most luxurious hotel groups, including two properties in Bali. We talked about this group's commitment to sustainable food sourcing in the developing

KARATE NATIONALS A SUCCESS FOR NOOSA BY RON LANE For our local Martial Arts Sunshine Coast Club the recent Australian championships held in Caloundra over a three day period, proved very successful and with a total of 750 athletes competing the standard was very high. From a team of 28 representing Noosa they returned home with a total of 13 medals; 2gold 3 silver and 8 bronze. On the administration side the club made a fine gesture of supplying 10 volunteer officials and 1 referee, thus making their overall involvement one to be proud of. Amongst their achievements was the outstanding performance of the junior girls in the 14 to 17 age division. Competing for Queensland in the National Championship Kata Team Event (3 girl team) the Noosa girls won gold. "We are very proud of this," said head Sensi (coach) Bryan Dukas "This is the first time that Queensland has won the gold in this event. The team which consisted of Isla Corbett, Keely Menere and Gemnna Whyte, were outstanding." Another good effort came when Dannica Starey. Competing in the 11yr. division for the third year in a row she won the gold in the Kumite (sparring) event. "To win this once is good but to take the title three years in a row is outstanding," said Dukas. Competing in the
veterans division for the first time, the three Noosa team members, Nicole Thornton (kata) Maria Suarez and Chris Gaughan (kumite) all came home with medals. "Away from the competition arena," said Dukas, "the manners and good conduct of all team members was highly commended; add to this the family support and overall we indeed had very successful titles." The next major event for the club will be in October when the Good Shepard College will play host to the Queensland School Karate Championships. With the college being the current holders of the trophy for the best karate school in the state a good tournament is assured. Then to finish off the year in November visiting South African Sensi, Mike Dukas Black Belt 8th Dan, will conduct a seminar at the Noosa club and later black belt gradings will also be held. "At present our membership is 120 and is still growing. For interested parents we have a kindy program with membership starting at 4/5 years of age," said Dukas. It is interesting to note that despite the lack of publicity and promotion for the sports of amateur boxing and martial arts within our community, (both of which will be contested at the Tokyo Olympics) the number of state national and Commonwealth champions that we have produced in our small town (and are

MANGROVE JACK
PLENTY OF ACTION IN THE NOOSA RIVER With the breezes coming up early on the weekend anglers tended to use the hit and run approach when it came to fishing offshore, North Reef was good for Pearl Perch and quality Snapper, Spangled Emperor and Venus Tusk Fish. Constant burley trails using block pilchards cubed up and tuna oil have been the best technique in getting the schools of snapper closer to the boat. Lightly weighted whole pilchard baits used in conjunction with the burley trail, seem to be raising the bigger snapper. Sunshine reef was good for Coral Trout, Snapper and Sweetlip with the odd winter longtail tuna thrown in. Halls Reef saw Grassy Sweetlip, snapper and some nice cobia. Working small jerk shad type plastics has been the go to technique for this area. Metal slugs up to 40g working very well on the odd tuna schools, Spanner crabs have been in numbers in the shallower sandy areas. We are starting to see a few good tailor schools moving up the beaches at the moment, schools aren't big but there has been some quality fish over 50cm in length. The Noosa River mouth right up thru Teewah Beach has been really starting to fire due to the water temperature dropping a couple of degrees. Good tailor were landed in the deeper gutters with the run in tide being the most productive. Pillies were the bait of choice as well as mullet and bonito fillet. Large winter bream were also in the mix with fish report up to 35cm with the run in after dark the better time. For the younger anglers there have been some dart noosatoday.com.au
and whiting in the closer gutters with both species taken on beach worms and pippies. Jewies have favoured the night time bite, especially near the top of the tide on the open beach gutters. Best baits have been live beach worms, mullet fillet, good local squid and pilchards. In the river the tailor are in good numbers throughout the river especially around the frying pan and river mouth areas. Live herring and small whole pilchards on ganged hooks has working well on the larger fish. Casting surface lures around Woods Bay area and on the sides of the Jet Ski Zone have produced the bigger tailor as well as fun sized choppers! Good bream and whiting have come from the River mouth, Frying pan, dog beach and along the Tewantin stretch of the river, smaller surface lures are always good fun on the whiting, for the Bait anglers, live worms, yabbies and prawns have been the best baits along with whitebait working well for the bigger bream. Early morning and late afternoon around the deep channels of the Frying Pan and near the council chambers in Tewantin have been producing a variety of trevally species. Surface lures and Soft Plastic lures have been working well loaded when scent. Mangrove jacks have been in lower estuary and between the lakes. Taking a wide range of live and dead baits, fresh mullet strips, live herring and live winter whiting. So On behalf of Jack Mangrove, best of luck on your fishing adventures! ●
