CLUB BRINGS RESIDENTS TOGETHER WHEN Villawood launched its $5 million residents' club at Delaray in Clyde North last week the star of the show was 79-year old great grandmother Marlene Nealon. After 15 years in Berwick, Marlene, who has six sons, six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, moved to Delaray in January. Marlene and her beloved dog Sooty featured in a promotional video shown to guests at the club opening. "I feel so comfortable here, it's the whole community feeling," Marlene said. "I take Sooty for a walk every morning. People are working in their gardens, you can stop and talk to them. "There is nothing I like more than taking Sooty and my great-grandchildren to the

park. There are kids of all nationalities and everybody is playing. It's just beautiful." At an age when most people would be moving into a retirement village, Marlene said she wanted to live "where I had lots children around me". "I have five or six backyards which back onto mine. I sit out and listen to the chidren playing. It's wonderful." The residents' club was also one of the reasons Marlene was attracted to Delaray. The architecturally designed residents' club features two swimming pools, a fullyequipped gym, function room and theatrette, library, parents' lounge, community garden, men's shed and tennis court. A cafe will open in the next few month, while a

childcare centre is planned to be built on land next door. Villawood Properties CEO Phil Hanna said the clubhouse model was a way of promoting social inclusiveness and cohesion. He said the club was the "heart and lungs of the community". "By giving our residents more opportunities to connect, through structures such as Club Delaray, the more familiar they become with the people living around them and it fosters a sense of safety, a sense of shared ownership and ultimately a strong

and genuine sense of community." Mr Hanna said Club Delaray represented a $5 million investment in the community. Villawood Properties doesn't make any profit on the facility and the club will become common property once it is completed. It will then be owned by the Owners Corporation. For her part, Marlene said she was looking forward to the cafe opening, borrowing books from the library and meeting even more of her neighbours. "I think I've got a new life in Delaray. I'm not moving from here. I'm happy." ●
