Diggers honoured on pair’s Kokoda trek Berwick's David Mounsey and Michael Molloy have decided to walk the 96km Kokoda trek in honour of our WWII heroes who went over to Papua New Guinea to defend our country from the Japanese infiltration back in 1942 and to raise money for a number of charities. Shocking losses Punters in the City of Casey have fed hundreds of millions of dollars into pokies - prompting a leading anti-gambling campaigner to say the "blight" needed to be fixed. The latest figures from the Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation revealed City of Casey ranked second worst council for gambling losses, behind Brimbank. Players forked out a staggering $131 million with 913 gaming machines at 13 venues between July 1 last year and June 30. The report also showed gamblers poured $18.94 million into pokies at the Berwick Springs Hotel, $3 million at the Cranbourne RSL, $9 million at the Berwick Inn Taverner, $12 million at the Hampton Park Tavern and $7 miilion at the
Amstel Golf Club in Cranbourne. Casey acting city planning manager Kathryn Seirlis said council's preferred position was for no further growth with the number of existing or already approved Electronic Gaming Machines (EGMs) within the city. "Council is naturally concerned about gambling losses being experienced by Casey residents," she said. She said council wanted the State Government to extend a cap that limits the number of EGMs across the municipality. "A city-wide cap would provide certainty to the remaining parts of Casey to keep the EGM density consistent across the municipality. "Council is committed to minimising risk and harm from problem gambling," Ms Seirlis said.
"It is significant to note that Council was recently successful in opposing an application by the Lynbrook Hotel, which is in the capped area, for an additional 25 EGMs." City of Casey Deputy Mayor Amanda Stapledon said: "While we can't prescribe how people live we have a responsibility to minimise harm." "I realise how much damage this causes families and communities. I think Casey is really strong in this area, we've got to have more support from authorities," she said. The Alliance for Gambling Reform director and spokesman Tim Costello said Casey councillors needed "to get serious" with tackling the issue of problem gambling. "It is disappointing that City of Casey hasn't joined with 19 other Victorian councils and become a financial member of The Alliance for

Gambling Reform for 2018-19 given that their community suffers the second highest losses of any council," he said. Mr Costello suggested councillors could do something pro-active during the upcoming inaugural Gambling Harm Awareness week in October. Cranbourne Information and Support Services executive officer Leanne Petrides said more efforts needed to be made with promoting counselling for people who wish to stop gambling. "We know that it is far more likely that their money will be lost, and they and their families become victims of gambling related harm," she said. "People find it very hard to talk about gambling addiction - they are extremely embarrassed."

THREE ‌ secrets to good living
1
Following Your Passion The first secret of leading a good life is finding and following your passion. Dr Francis Macnab, Professor Emeritus, and founder of The Cairnmillar Institute, has given years of study to the special psychological needs associated with ageing.Psychology and psychoanalysis have been mine for more than sixty years. What a privilege it has been to meet with the large numbers of people who have experienced the challenges and traumas of life and transcended them.
2
Creating Joy An important secret of living well is finding and creating joy. I find joy in writing words. I take words and they begin to form a theme, not premeditated, but rather streams of consciousness, a flow of words. Move one word, change another, the theme takes its shape, tell its story.
3
Fulfilling Moments Another secret is creating fulfilling moments. It could be discovering someone you have not seen for years. They were always a good presence in times past. The present and the past come together, and create a wondering about a future where joy is present once more.

Still on the search Council will continue its search for a suitable site to name in honour of one of Berwick's most loved citizens, the late Mick Morland. The decision of Council to not proceed with a proposal to rename Pioneers Park after late former Casey Mayor follows a consultation period in which the community no strongly supported retaining the current name. City of Casey Mayor Geoff Ablett said Council would continue to consult with Mr Morland's widow Kay and examine suitable alternatives. "The Berwick community's connection to Pioneers Park is strong and we need to listen to their views and honour Mick's legacy in a way everyone can support," Cr Ablett said. "We'll continue to work with Mick's family to find a place worthy of bearing Mick's name." Casey Council recently unveiled a plan to rename the central Berwick Park to Mick Morland Reserve to pay tribute to Mr Morland, who died when tragically struck by a car on 24 June 2017. In June, a member of one of Berwick's founding families was opposed to renaming Pioneers Park. Geoff Hudson, a former Berwick resident it was not easy to speak against honouring Mr Morland who had given "long and valuable community service". But he said it was important to remember that a "concerted public campaign" helped create the park, he argued. "Pioneers Park commemorates all the people of Berwick, not a single individual." Mr Hudson said the park existed because his parents Bill and Helen Hudson proposed the former Berwick Primary School site should be retained for community use. Cr Ablett said while Council received 55 submissions, of which 52 opposed to the proposal, virtually all submitters recognised the esteem in which Mick was held by the Casey community. Council will also apply to have Pioneers Park formally registered with the Registrar of Geographic Names. First elected in 1992 to the City of Berwick
Casey council will explore other places to honour the late Mick Morland after the community strongly supported retaining Pioneers Park. Mick served six terms as a Councillor, including on the inaugural City of Casey Council elected in March 1997.
He was elected by his peers to the position of Mayor of the City of Casey twice - in 2001/02 and again in 2014/15.
Casey’s artistic flair By Brendan Rees Casey's talented artists and photographers have showcased their creativity during an exhibition held on Saturday 11 August. School students and adults displayed their inspiring works of art at Hampton Park Community House. The event featured more than 65 entries across Casey, with many entering for the first time to compete in the $1000 cash pool of prizes. Gift vouchers were presented to the best entries for children. Coordinator of the art and photography show Heather Sheppard said the event was an opportunity for people to showcase their work to the public and help them understand how to present their pieces.
"It was lovely to see some smiles on faces and getting some recognition for their work," she said. "It's a really good jumping off point for local people to showcase their talent. "It's a small show that locals feel comfortable entering their work," she added. Art pieces included all forms of mediums from pencil to water colour, pastels and more while photography submissions included portraits, landscapes, nature and still life. The exhibition was a part of the Winter Arts Festival which celebrates the arts in the City of Casey and runs every June, July and August. The festival gives local artists and arts groups' exposure and recognition while encouraging the community to participate and appreciate the fantastic local arts in Casey.

The City of Casey is reminding residents what to expect on their 2018/19 rates notice when they start to arrive in mailboxes next week. Ratepayers should not expect their rates notice to rise by exactly the forecast inflation rate of 2.25 percent. Council has complied with the Victorian Governments rate cap, which applies the cap to the overall increase of applicable rates and charges council collects. The rates and charges of properties may have increased or decreased by different percentage amounts for the following reasons: • The valuation of the property relative to the valuation movement of other properties within the municipality. • The inclusion of other rates and charges not covered by the Victorian Government's rate cap. As stipulated by the State Government, Casey undertook a general revaluation with the relevant date of 1 January 2018. Under the requirements of the Valuation of Land Act 1960, council is required to conduct revaluations of all rateable properties every two years. From 2019, the State Government will require council's to revalue properties annually. City of Casey Mayor Cr Geoff Ablett said that revaluations do not generate extra revenue for council and are undertaken in line with the State Government Valuer-General specifications, which is a legal requirement for all councils to comply with. "Rates are distributed across the municipality based on the individual valuations of each property," Cr Ablett said. "Revaluations do not alter the dollar figure that council raises, the total combined general rates remain the same. "When the total value of all properties increases the rate in the dollar is adjusted to compensate, there is no gain for council." "The value placed on each property by the valuer is current and closely reflects market values (as at 1 January 2018). Cr Ablett said all valuations are reviewed taking into account the latest market evidence (sales and rents) for each type of property and each area within the municipality. "When you receive your rates notice, it is important not to add your Capital Improved Value (CIV) and Site Value (SV) together as this is not how rates are calculated," he said. "Rates are calculated by multiplying the rate in the dollar by the Capital Improved Value. "The State Revenue Office uses site values to assess land tax under the Land Tax Act 2005 and to issue land tax for the same period." Residents have two months from the rate notice being issued to lodge an objection against their valuation. For further information on submitting an objection please contact council on 9705 5200.

Casey is measuring satisfaction across all services if offers. The City of Casey is undertaking a data collection project across all of its 66 services to gain a better understanding of the levels of service and satisfaction being provided. The project will provide valuable insights into each of council's services and will be used to inform services planning, continuous improvement opportunities and to improve the overall customer experience. New Focus, a specialist in customer surveying and data analysis, has been selected by Casey to undertake the survey on its behalf. City of Casey Mayor Cr Geoff Ablett said we are wanting to hear directly from customers who have recently used our services to identify areas for improvement. "Council is committed to designing our services with our customers in mind and want to know how the community could see us improving," said the Mayor. "The survey will include both a mix of online and telephone surveys, with a cross representation of all council services (both internal and external) being surveyed as part of the project. "We are encouraging all residents who receive the survey to complete it and help council to understand if we are meeting our customers' expectations to inform future service improvements.

Friends of Clyde North Community Group run events, and currently, organise a regular monthly walking group for the neighbourhood. Here they invite people to friendships and a 'restoring' presence in Clyde-North. The group meets socially and allows people to find their own connection through conversation. "Our stories are filled with vibrant messages about residents forming new rhythms in Clyde-North and creating a sense of their own belonging," group member Gerard Ferron said. "We stand for all abilities and, we are pleased to welcome new residents to connect with our events, via Facebook." Last Sunday, August 12, starting at Selandra Community Hub, the group walked the streets of newly developed Clyde North for about thirty minutes. "All the way we chatted, took the time to know each other while embracing the unexpected sunshine that greeted us with its warmth," he said. "It was the first leg of our Historic Clyde Walking Group event. "A short drive later we arrived at Clyde and parked at the Clyde-Cardinia Fire Brigade which has been active as a volunteer rural fire station since 1944." There they were met by captain Andrew, who had generously prepared a Clyde Information Pack for them. Their conversations were about the local heritage listed homes, the General Store and the demolished 1888 Clyde Railway Station. Our next steps took them on a tour of the village. Debra Palmer, a local resident of Clyde for the past 25 years was their host and tour guide. Strolling down Railway Road, they arrived at the narrow Clyde Bridge constructed in 1915.
From left, Chris Santos, Chloe Elizabeth, Maddi Albon, Liane Barry-Ferron, Carolyn Kempson, Sarah Peterson, Holger Pyritz and Evelinda Santos participated in the Historic Clyde Walk. "Clyde is a peaceful place, where cows can be sighted through the foliage of aged gums trees that line the old Clyde railway track," Mr Ferron said. "We discussed the coming changes and local history as we meandered the quiet stretch of Ballarto Road before walking past the 1928 Public Hall and Mechanics Institute. "To think, in days gone by these halls held the local library, they were a place for community celebration, an epicentre of rural life." At their final destination, they gathered at the 1905 general store and post office. The group met with liberal candidate for the seat of Cranbourne Ann-Marie Hermans. "We appreciated them making a personal commitment to our region, and for discussing their proposed new railway system with us locals, and our hopes for connecting Cranbourne to Clyde," Mr Ferron said. "We want to thank all the participants, and especially our walkers, for generously giving up their time to enjoy an everyday connection. "You raised the value of our Clyde North community as a safe and friendly place to live and belong. 12388226-CG22-18
The Kokoda Track has been on Berwick's Michael Molloy and David Mounsey's bucket list for several years, so when the Association of Financial Advisers (AFA) decided to coordinate this trek they decided to jump on board. The AFA Foundation also supports a number of charities including Legacy, The Black Dog Institute, MS Organisation and the Make a Wish Foundation, and the two men thought these organisations were very worthy recipients of the publics' very kind donations. They have also decided to walk the 96km Kokoda trek in honour of our WWII heroes who went over to Papua New Guinea as young men and women to defend the country from the Japanese infiltration back in 1942. This trek will be led by Brian Freeman, world adventurer and founder of the carrying 41 Tribute which raises awareness of veteran suicide and PTSD. There are 12 trekkers together with 25 support staff and porters (Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels) going on this trek. Mr Molloy has previously done the 100km Oxfam walk through the Dandenong's which took about 24 hours to complete. "It was very gruelling, but I think this Kokoda trek will be a lot harsher due to the humidity and very steep harsh terrain," Mr Molloy said. "The 96km Kokoda trek will take us approximately seven days to complete and our only goal is to finish." Initially the 12 trekkers set a target of $40,000 for the four charities noted, but the support from the public has been overwhelm-

Get it right Before you embark on a campaign to ’Unblock the Gridlock’, (Berwick Star News, Thursday, 16 August), perhaps you/we need to correctly identify the most major road in the region! The Monash Freeway ENDS at Princes Highway in Narre Warren, from there it is called the Princes Freeway (East) all the way to and past Nar Nar Goon, towards Traralgon. Once we can all agree on that fact, perhaps we can then consider what needs to be done. I have always said that the Princes Freeway should have had an extra third lane both ways from Clyde Road to at least Kooweerup Road. Secondly, I have always said that the diamond interchange at the intersection of the Princes Freeway and the Princes Highway and the O’Shea Road non-extension east from Soldiers Road, should also be completed. Once these main roads are completed you can then work on the many other roads that either need building or duplicating. These would include building in part and duplicating, Glasscocks Road from the Western Port Highway all the way through to Clyde Road, to give a second east-west option to Thompsons Road. Building the Cranbourne bypass, which has been on the drawing board for more than 40 years! Duplicating Hallam South Road from the Princes Highway to Pound Road and also duplicating Pound Road from Hallam Road through to Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road. Duplicating Greaves Road and O’Shea Road from the Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road, all the way through to the Princes Freeway diamond intersection and duplicating the Narre Warren Road south from Thompson’s Road through to the Cranbourne bypass referred to above, which should be duplicated all the way to the South Gippsland Highway, along what is currently Cameron Street. While these above suggestions are really only playing catch-up, there are still more local roads that also clearly need attention as well. Terry Walsh, Narre Warren South.

Christopher Emolution Brent: What a joke he probably forgot to put it out on time or put it somewhere the truck couldn't get at the council doesn't owe him shit he chose to take the bin to the tip instead of contacting Casey council to arrange to have his bin emptied or discuss why it wasn't collected. Christopher Emolution Brent: Probably expected the truck to come out just to empty his bin. He isn't the only person who has missed bin day or for whatever reason his bin hasn't been collected but he expects the council to reimburse him for him choosing to go to the tip when anyone else would have had the common sense to call the council but no he didn't. Leanne Woodman: Very occasionally trucks forget our little court. All I had to do was ring the council and they came within 12 hours and emptied the bins. Gabriela Juncal: Even if they missed his bin, couldn't he just take it back in and put it out again the following week? Louis J. Russell: Truck didn't collect our bin - rang council the next day and they had sent a truck out to collect within an hour. Needed a new lid on a bin - sorted by the driver the following week. I don't like Caey council much, but they do their rubbish well....... Gillian Crosby: What a whinger, all he had to do was call the council. They quickly rectify the problem and there's no issue. It’s all lies
Fix the roads
Council want to take all the praise for getting a crossing across Pound Road near the Seniors Club. It’s all lies, the River Gum councillors didn’t know about a crossing the Seniors Club have been fighting for 18 years but got nowhere. My wife Angela who was the secretary came and told me they were getting nowhere so I took it up with my local MP and that got the ball rolling. Work is due to start this month. D. Gardner, Hampton Park
The worst roads in my area are Shrives Road and Pound Road from the Hallam Road lights to Vanessa Drive.
Advocate for housing It would be good if our councils and papers somehow were able to advocate for, or do something to advocate for, including Social or Commission Housing in the growth of this area. There is a waiting list for such housing and it doesn’t assist or help these people to have increasingly expensive homes for sale in the area. A number of Hampton Park and Doveton houses were built by the Housing Commission, but have since been sold. Karen Young, Hampton Park
Pound Road between the hours from 5.10am to 9am going west and from 3.30pm to 6.30pm going east is chaos every day plus it's made worse just past the Hallam Road lights where the road goes from three lanes into one lane. Traffic would be a lot better if Casey Council and VicRoads pulled their socks and reopened Central Road from Shrives Road to Hallam road just get the creek bridge repaired and put traffic lights at Hallam Road. It would take a lot of traffic away from Shrives Road because drivers on Fullard Road could go on Central Road and not turn left onto Shrives Road; Central road was closed because the creek bridge was unsafe. I just say to the council and VicRoads - fix it. D. Gardner Hampton Park

Miguel had two warrants for failing to appear at court on bail on 3 August for disqualified driving, drug-driving and drinkdriving. She had also been on bail for allegedly stealing $3800 of jewellery and three gift cards from a Berwick house during her work as a house cleaner last year. She allegedly pawned off some of the valuables. On 18 July, Miguel allegedly stole cuts of beef, dips, a cream pie and an apple pie from a chest freezer during a home burglary in Narre Warren South. According to a police remand summary at court, she made full admissions. She stated to police she was high on Xanax at the time, and woke up the following morning to find the food in her fridge, the summary stated. Miguel also allegedly admitted to stealing a pensioner's handbag while the victim walked away from her walking frame to dry her hands in Dandenong Plaza toilets on 12 July. The handbag contained the victim's medication and disabled label, the summary stated.
Miguel was also accused of robbing a woman on Newton Lane Dandenong in the early afternoon of 9 July. After a short struggle, Miguel stole the woman's handbag containing her phone, purse and bank and personal cards, according to police. She allegedly told police she used $80 from the purse to buy heroin at a nearby house, and loaned the phone to a pawn shop for $70. Miguel told police that she supplied drugs to friends and associates, as well as servicing her own $100-a-day heroin habit. Defence lawyer Duncan Fowler said Miguel's offending was fuelled by a "serious drug addiction". She had been assessed as suitable for a CISP bail program to treat her drug issues, Mr Fowler said. She was remorseful, insightful and now aware of her family's support for her. Miguel had successfully overcome her addiction in the past, Mr Fowler said. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said he was concerned about the escalating thefts in July, as well as "comments about drug use" at Miguel's share-house in Endeavour Hills. Despite the CISP and family supports, Miguel failed to establish 'exceptional circumstances' for bail and was an unacceptable risk of reoffending, he said. "It's all too serious, Renee," Mr Vandersteen told her. Miguel was remanded to appear at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 24 August.
Jail for two-month crime spree By Cam Lucadou-Wells A 24-year-old Narre Warren drug user has been jailed over a two-month spree of thefts throughout the South East in the summer of 2017-18. Joel Luke McCarthy pleaded guilty at Dandenong Magistrates' Court to 33 charges including the theft of a car, handling stolen goods, assaults, driving disqualified, speeding, failing to stop for police and running a red light. He handled stolen items such as a handbag, wallets, passports and number plates as well as using stolen bank cards to make purchases. More than 40 charges were withdrawn, EUROPE HIGHLIGHTS • DAY 6 with an arson charge shifted for trial at a higher Paris court. The mounting charge list across a host of suburbs in Melbourne's South East and East had not been finalised until recently. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen noted the sheer volume of offending and locations had at least partly contributed to the delay. "He certainly knows he caused a lot of trouble in a few months," a defence lawyer told the court on 20 August. "He is willing to do the time he deserves." At age 8, McCarthy had endured deep family tragedy without grief counselling or treatment. Afterwards, he was raised by his grandparents.

McCarthy had graduated from cannabis use at 14 to being "controlled" by drugs such as ice and 'juice' (GHB) a decade later. He moved out of home due to his drug-fuelled "lifestyle" stressing his grandparents, the court was told. Over the past six months, he had been in remand custody. During that stint, he'd undertaken Narcotics Anonymous and Alcoholics Anonymous courses as well as vocational training, the court heard. At one point, McCarthy seemed taken aback when shown a photo of his former drugabused self soon after his arrest on 7 February. "It's shocking," he told the court. Magistrate Vandersteen told McCarthy: "I don't think I'd recognise you now." Mr Vandersteen took into account McCarthy's limited prior history, age, show of insight and the developmental impediment caused by his uncounselled childhood grief. Jailed McCarthy for six months, declaring his time had been served in remand. McCarthy was however remanded for a committal mention for arson at Melbourne Magistrates' Court on 28 August. He was disqualified from driving for 12 months.

The Casey Multifaith committee: Jim Reiher (outgoing president), Kathy Burgstahler (president), Meha Nanthie (vice-president), Pam Mamouney (treasurer), Elizabeth Hanley, and Casey councillor Damien Rosario.
Striving for peace ahead By Brendan Rees Kathy Burgstahler has taken over the reins as president of the Casey Multi-Faith Network. She was welcomed during an Annual General Meeting dinner held on Thursday 16 August. "As president, it is my main goal to drive the group into the future and ensure that our directive is to promote peace harmony and understanding within our community, said Ms Burgstahler. The Casey Multi-faith Network is a representation of various religions and faiths committed to working together toward the promotion of peace, harmony and understanding within the community Jim Reiher stepped down as president after many years to give others a chance to step up and to carry the baton while Meha Nanthie, who has had experience with the Cardinia interfaith group was elected Vice-President. Ms Nanthie has a vision to drive the group into the future and to ensure that their directive to promote peace harmony and understanding are met. Ms Burgstahler said "This is a big change for the Casey Multi-Faith Group as it signals a
new era of promoting the longevity and long term success of the group." As vice-president last financial year Ms Burgstahler helped introduce an annual fee of $10 per household to boost their membership. "This not only assisted with funding but created a greater sense of ownership and commitment amongst the group. We also introduced a mix of day and night time meetings to ensure all ages, all demographics, can attend." Ms Burgstahler also said the wording of the Multi-Faith Statement, which is read out during council meetings will also be changed, to make it more inclusive of the entire community Casey councillor Damien Rosario said the group worked collaboratively to educate each other on their beliefs and to promote peace and harmony. "I see the value in having a place where new migrants can come and be welcomed, to see other the cultures and religions that we have in Casey, and to show them the very best of what we have to offer as a community and country," he said. "Couldn't be more prouder to be a part of this group."

feeds into mortgage stress, family violence and children who don't see their parents. "Traffic congestion should not be used as an excuse for family violence, indeed, family violence is likely to be present before stress due to traffic congestion," Together We Can's collective impact facilitator Fiona Cost said."Family violence occurs when a perpetrator exercises power and control over another person. It involves coercive and abusive behaviours designed to intimidate, humiliate, undermine and isolate. "People who get stressed in traffic, particularly with children in the car, may benefit from talking to someone who can support them to identify stress triggers and how best to respond in stressful situations." Mr Mumford said his motorcycle is the only reliable way to get to the CBD. "Soldiers road is ridiculous," he said. "Travelling south to north from Clyde to Berwick could take a car 30 to 40 minutes at 8:30 on weekdays." Soldiers Road in Berwick is causing havoc for drivers trying to commute to and from work and to and from schools. Berwick resident Sven Kerslake said during school hours Soldiers Road is heavily congested due to overpopulation and people trying to use it to avoid Berwick's Clyde Road or Kangan Drive. "From Narre Warren South to Dandenong South for work, for example, takes 15 to20 minutes in regular traffic and anywhere between 45 on a good run or one hour to an hour 20 on a bad run," he said. "I would like to see better infrastructure in our small inner suburbs but it is hard to do this without destroying more land which is never great, but what do you do with this mess that they've made? "No wonder everyone is moving further out." Mr Kerslake added he would also like to see stricter policies for international licenses used in Australia and he agrees with the tough policies on drink driving. Eden Rise Estate Berwick resident Earl Mumford travels into the city on his motorcycle most days. He said he can travel to the city in 50 minutes via motorcycle during peak hours. "The trains are often replaced by buses and it took me 1.5 hours via the bus, train debacle," he said. "There are a number of houses for sale around the proposed Minta Farm estate off Soldiers Road. If you cannot get to work in a timely manner this has social and family time consequences." Mr Mumford said he suspects travel stress

Libs public safety push By Brendan Rees City of Casey could be earmarked for new CCTV cameras in a bid to boost community safety, the Liberals have promised if they win the State Election. Casey Council will be able to identify areas within their community such as park edges and shopping areas that attract a higher rate of crime and implement measures to stop antisocial behaviour. The Liberals have promised grants of up to $250,000 which will be made available to Casey Council to develop public safety and security infrastructure like CCTV systems, improved lighting and creating local solutions to local crime. The announcement follows other community focused crime prevention measures announced by the Liberal Nationals including: Establishing highly visible Police shopfronts in 12 major shopping centres. Re-establish a 'Police in Schools' program, to allow police to better engage with young Victorians. Fund the establishment of a Victoria Police Mobile CCTV camera rollout and;
· · ·
$2 million over four years to Neigh· Commit bourhood Watch for local crime prevention initiatives. Leader of the Opposition, Matthew Guy said: "This election Victorians will have a choice between more of the same soft approach from Daniel Andrews or the Liberal Nationals zero tolerance approach to violent criminals." However, Minister for Police Lisa Neville said the State Government had increased funding in this year's budget with an additional $25 million towards crime prevention projects including lighting and CCTV. "Crime rose every year when the Liberals were last in Government. We are only now beginning to turn around the six year crime wave, which started in 2011 when the Liberals decided to not fund a single new police officer," she said. "Our investments in new police, technology and in community crime prevention are already having an impact with crime rates across the state continuing to decline." The State Government invested $2 billion which is currently delivering an extra 3135 officers across the state.

Get ready to revisit an era of neon leggings, big hair and bold colours in what's shaping up to be a big fundraiser party in Cranbourne. Assisting Casey Education (ACE) Foundation, which provides a helping hand to disadvantaged students across Casey, is inviting the community to step back in time for an '80s themed event at Cranbourne Turf Club on Saturday 20 October. Money raised will go towards children to overcome hurdles in their educational pursuits by providing free eye tests with optometrists in Casey, meal replacement drinks and reading books. Live and silent auctions will take place throughout the night with a treasure trove of donated items and experiences up for grabs. The foundation's chair, Dr Leon Shapero, said the night will be perfect for guests to light up their dancing shoes and help raise money to improve the lives of young people. "We have about 100 different silent auction items for bidding on but we also have some public auction items," he said. "The main public auction item for bidding is two business class return tickets to London
provided by Singapore Airlines. They're valued between $13000 and $14000. "We can say hand on heart that every dollar that we get in reaches a child," he said. More than 450 children have been provided with glasses since the Foundation's free eye testing program started two years ago. "It's so easy for kids to fall off the radar and not be able to see well," Dr Shapero said. Members of the Foundation also visit schools across Casey once a month to deliver 2500 meal replacement drinks. Zoe Warren from Cranbourne Park Shopping Centre and Casey Stadium have also assisted the the ACE Foundation in supplying donation bins whereby the public is invited during August to donate Up and Go meal replacement drinks for the 'Feed Hungry Minds' program. Every prep student in government schools are also provided a reading book by the Foundation to kick-start their learning development. Tickets ($120 per person) for the fundraiser dinner can be purchased via the ACE Foundation Facebook page. Cost includes food, alcohol and entertainment. The night will run from 6pm-midnight. berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au

Look after yourself, look By Russell Bennett One key message came through loud and clear when close to 500 men came together for the fifth annual Cardinia Casey Biggest Ever Blokes Lunch at the Cardinia Cultural Centre in Pakenham on Friday: Look after yourself, and look out for your mates. A record crowd posted a record profit for the event, with $130,000 raised in the afternoon for prostate cancer research and awareness, as well as local men’s health initiatives. That takes the total raised over the event’s five-year history to $460,000. Organising committee chairman Garry Howe was thrilled with the success of the event. Mr Howe said it was not all about the money and that attracting that many men in the room to talk about their health issues was a greater achievement. “Blokes are generally not good at looking after themselves and getting to the doctor to have a check-up,” he explained. “I think a lot more are aware of their health now that we’ve been lecturing them for a few years and hopefully the local clinics are seeing a bit more of them now.” The huge crowd - the biggest to ever attend the event at the Cultural Centre - heard from Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia’s state chief executive John Strachan, Berwick-based urologist Shekib Shahbaz and local prostate cancer survivors Roger McGill and Troy Apthorpe. Mr McGill, in his 70s, spoke about just how close he came to losing his life through his battle with the disease, and emphasised the importance of regular check-ups. “I was a bit unlucky - they did lose me on the (operating) table but that doesn’t happen to everyone, don’t worry about that, and they brought me back,” he said.
“I did have a very aggressive cancer.” Mr Apthorpe also spoke of his own battle, having been diagnosed in his 40s. “The biggest thing I was told after I was diagnosed was to get the message out there, and the message is we all find time to catch up with our mates, or go to work, or get our kids to footy - please take the time once a year on your way home or on your way to work, or even take a sickie, to go and get a check-up,” he said. “It’s that simple. I’m 50-years-of-age in November, and I’m pretty lucky ... I probably shouldn’t be sitting here today.” The men’s health message was also rammed home by keynote speaker, Essendon Football Club legend James Hird. He spoke of his mental health struggles through a particularly tumultuous past five years as football’s ‘supplements saga’ engulfed not only the game and the club he loved, but also his own private life. “I don’t know how many people here have been through depression, or had a brother, a sister, a wife, a mother, a daughter, a father or a friend who’s been through it - but it’s the worst illness you could get,” he said. “I got my face smashed in Perth and got 10 metal plates through here and I almost lost my eye in 2002 from this knock, and I thought that was the most horrendous pain I could go through. “I’d go through that every day of the week before I’d go through the depression I went through. “If you know anybody (battling mental health issues), or you’re there yourself, you’ve got to rely on people and if you know people in that position go and help them - talk to them. They probably won’t ring you back. They won’t respond to you because they’re in such a dark place, but you have to help and keep contacting, and contacting, and contacting them.”
James Hird won over the crowd with his honesty and humility. 184158

This mum means business By Jessica Anstice Berwick mum Carmen Williams, 33, has been selected as a finalist for the 2018 AusMumpreneur Awards in the service category with her business, Strategic Action Consulting. It all started with a nose ring. Living a conservative life by 'other' people's rules is the way many people live including Ms Williams until she decided to throw out this rule book and ignore the limits. Having just found out that her mum was dying she unearthed an increased appreciation for the value to time. This combined with the emergence of the rebel within Ms Williams agonised over the decision to get a nose ring. She weighed up all the pros and cons, asked for people's opinion, and stressed about it before she did it. Some people had opinions but she found that she could handle this with ease. With her nose ring in place she continued to attend a course, where she not only learnt coaching skills but cultivated a strong belief that she could do anything that she put her mind to. Surprisingly to everyone including herself and her teacher, she secured her first client. Now she was a business woman. Feeling so revved up from the last couple of day of the course, her new nose ring and a client under her wing, she commenced the walk from the car park into work. This heavy feeling came over her she even forgot her password to the computer and she realised that now was the time. She called her director and negotiated to walk out at lunch time that day. When she told her colleagues, they said that they didn't know she was going, she said that until that morning she didn't either. It took her longer to decide to get a nose ring. Ms Williams has since gone on to estab-
lish a profitable business transforming health care for the community, opened her mind up to new possibilities, ran a half marathon, surrounded herself with friends and mentors and showed her children that anything is possible. The AusMumpreneur Awards recognise Australian Mums in business achieving outstanding success. "Being selected as a finalist means so much to me because I love being a woman who is running a thriving business and raising two thriving children," Ms Williams said. "Although I have very strong internal motivation, it is nice to receive some external validation every once in a while. "I appreciate the recognition and would like to use it as a platform to demonstrate to other aspiring Mumpreneurs what is possible." Ms Williams said if someone had told her at the start of last year that she was going to run her own consulting firm that was transforming the health industry she would have laughed at them. "When I found out I was a finalist, I was excited to me recognised but also sad that my mum wasn't there to celebrate," she said. "I was nominated by Maureen Pound, who is an amazing coach who now teaches others. "It was Maureen's course that gave me the courage to take the leaps into my own business and I simply would not be in business if it was not for Maureen." It can be challenging to run a successful business whilst raising a family and Ms Williams gives this advice for others thinking about starting their own enterprise, "If you are ready for continuous learning and hard work, just do it, don't wait."

Zumba for farmers
Two trapped
By Jessica Anstice
It is believed a car was turning right onto Princes Highway from Lauderdale Road when it was struck by an oncoming vehicle about 10pm.
Carmen Get Fit is holding a Zumbathon to raise money for our Aussie farmers on Friday 24 August at Hillcrest Christian College in Clyde North. "I have been seeing the effects this drought has been having on our Aussie farmers through the media over the past few months and it's heartbreaking," event organiser Carmen Charlton said. ""These people work so tirelessly and are doing it so tough through no fault of their own, which made me wish there was something I could do. "It really does seem helpless when you feel like 'just one person'; like anything you do won't be enough." Ms Charlton said her husband suggested they make a donation. "Again it seemed like such a drop in the ocean, although every dollar counts," she said. "Therefore we decided that perhaps I should hold a zumba masterclass so we can make a bigger donation and involve the community in a fun activity while doing so." Ms Charlton has been teaching zumba in the City of Casey for over eight years, and in that time she has held many fundraisers for various charities. "It's a such a fun thing to do and exercise that doesn't feel like exercise," she said. "It's always a fun event that anyone can join in with. All ages, all fitness levels, male, female; there is no coordination required if you're willing to have a laugh at yourself sometimes and everyone has a ball." The event is being held from 7:30 to9pm. The cost is $15 per head and all proceeds will be donated to our Aussie farmers. Bookings can be made via www.carmengetfit.com.au or for any enquiries contact Carmen on 0432 543 347.
Emergency services responded to a two-car collision in Narre Warren on Friday, 17 August.
A man and woman in the turning vehicle were trapped for some time and taken to hospital in a serious condition, however the extent of their injuries is not known at this stage. The driver and sole occupant of the other car, a 24 year old Officer man, sustained minor injuries. The exact cause of the collision is yet to be established and the investigation is ongoing. Anyone who witnessed the incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report online at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.
Speeding driver caught By Brendan Rees A Berwick man was allegedly caught rocketing down Berwick-Cranbourne Rd, Clyde North on Friday 18 August. Cardinia Highway Patrol intercepted the 24-year-old's 2017 BMW Coupe about midnight after being detected traveling at 128km/h in an 80 zone. The vehicle was impounded for 30 days at a cost of $1038. The driver will be summonsed to court at a later date.

The Australian Taxation Office is launching an extensive data-matching program to identify taxpayers receiving income from short term rentals. Information from online platform sharing sites for around 190,000 Australians will be examined to identify taxpayers who have left out rental income and over-claimed deductions. Assistant Commissioner Kath Anderson said the ATO is aware that some taxpayers are not declaring all their short-term rental income and "therefore we are launching an extensive data matching program to identify taxpayers who have left out income or over claimed deductions". "The availability of short-term rentals has exploded thanks to the online revolution, and there is evidence that some taxpayers don’t understand their taxation obligations," Ms Anderson said. "The ATO will now source information from online rental platforms and match it against the information included in tax returns. This new data complements data the ATO has been obtaining for some time in relation to long-term rentals. "Where a discrepancy is identified, the taxpayer will be given the opportunity to explain and if necessary, lodge an amendment. "While improvements in technology are helping people find ways to make extra money, technology is also assisting the ATO to obtain and analyse large sets of data to identify noncompliance. "As well as looking for undeclared income, we will use the information to identify taxpayers who use sharing economy platforms to list a property that they actually have no intention of renting out, so that they can claim deductions that they are not entitled to."

ON THE COVER
PERIOD CHARM WITH MODERN TOUCH EXUDING timeless elegance, The Camberwell by Premier Builders Group is for buyers who love period features combined with open plan living and modern conveniences. The Camberwell pays homage to the Californian Bungalow style of housing built between the wars in suburbs such as Camberwell, Hawthorn and Surrey Hills. The facade, a mix of brick, rough render and wood trim, features an attractive porch distinctive of the Californian Bungalow with a low front wall, curved brick work and decorative leadlight glass in the front door and framing the top of the front window. To the left of the entrance is a formal sitting room with gas log fireplace and matching built-in bookshelves. The clean lines of the single storey Camberwell are accentuated by the artdeco inspired cornice and the beautiful decorative ceiling roses. To the right is the master bedroom suite, with sleek walk-in robe, elegant ensuite and separate toilet. The ensuite has a frameless double shower and matching square basins. At the end of a short hall the Camberwell opens to reveal a luminous open plan kitchen, meals and family area all complemented by a butler's pantry and laundry with double garage access. A smart timber deck runs along the side of the Camberwell, with sliding door access from both the main living area and the theatre room/rumpus room. The floor plan includes three more bedrooms, all with built-in robes, family bathroom and separate toilet. Premier building and design consultant
Sharon Crawford-Jones said the Premier team was immensely proud to bring this stunning design to the market. "We have built something really special

Charity starts in the home Paul Furlong and his family use the profits from their aquarium business to fund an extraordinary charity helping some of the poorest people in the world. Paul, his wife Julie and sons Caleb and Benjamin operate Lots of Fins Aquarium in Narre Warren. Profits help support the family's charity, Revive the Kids. Paul travels to the poorest countries around the world and rescues slave families, orphaned children and desolate villages from desperate situations. He started his charity work about six and a half years ago and since then has built 23 orphanages that help with kids’ training and education. He has also freed over 400 slaves and helped to re-home and educate about 250 orphans in countries such as Africa, Nepal, Pakistan, Burma, India, and the Philippines. Paul started Revive the Kids in a reaction to other charities that he saw as ineffective and bloated by administration and operational costs that stopped money from going where it was most needed. “If I see a desperate need, my heart just melts and I can’t leave without doing something,” he said. “I work with someone I trust and I set up a freehold for families of slaves, help in businesses, build orphanages or schools, I’ve had a few sewing centers and training centers. “I take kids of the streets and give them
Attention to perfection Artelia is a second generation jewellery house founded on a passion for unique, personal and exceptional quality jewellery. Owners Roberto and Maria Ulas have a background in jewellery manufacturing, with generations of experience in creating the highest quality pieces which are designed to last a lifetime of love and affection. “Artelia was founded as a way for us to create a connection with the people who love and wear our jewellery and the memories that our designs come to represent,” Maria said. “We believe that jewellery is personal, sentimental and emotional - working with individuals rather than only other industry professionals means that we can now finally enjoy the connections that make jewellery so truly special.” The Artelia bespoke approach means that cli-
ents are given flexibility in the design process as Maria and Robert allow them control over every element of their piece. Their direct relationship with manufacturing means that they can offer greater flexibility throughout the design and manufacturing process. “All of our jewellery is manufactured at our workshop in Mulgrave,” Maria said. “We believe that to make the highest quality product every element of the manufacturing process should be done with care, respect, and the utmost attention to detail. We exemplify those values in our work ethic, our passion and our final pieces.” Artelia is located on level two within Westfield Fountain Gate in Narre Warren. I leave the artistic side to Jim and I do all the organisation and keep things ticking over.“ Kay said they confine most of their business talk to work hours and couldn’t run their business without the help of long term employees Michelle and Jen. “There are hiccups here and there, but we have two wonderful staff who are excellent and a great back up for Jim and I.“ As for retirement, Kay and Jim have no firm plans, despite Jim preparing to celebrate his 80th birthday next year. “We still enjoy it, “said Kay. “The regulars say ’You can’t retire yet, Jim’.“ However, Kay says they would welcome enquiries from qualified jewellers interested in helping Jim ease into retirement.
Dr Robert Panjkov established Beaconsfield Dental 30 years ago in 1988. Now, three decades on and a new location later, he works alongside his wife Lisa, their two daughters Melissa and Jacinta, and an experienced team of dentists. In 2015, Beaconsfield Dental made the exciting move to new state-of-the-art facilities. But the move - which took the team from a two-chair practice to a seven dental room practice - required some more hands on deck. “Up until the new practice I had been behind the scenes,” Lisa said, who is now the practice manager. “I used to manage everything at home - it was smaller but now we have a large team and it’s a lot more work. Our daughter Melissa is the assistant manager and helps out with reception and our other daughter, Jacinta, also helps out in-between study.” But despite the change in location, some things, such as the Panjkov’s dedication to environmentally friendly dentistry and their general love for their work, have remained the same.
“We enjoy our work and we want people to feel comfortable here,” Lisa said. “We’ve always been a family oriented business and we wanted to be welcoming because so many people have a genuine fear of the dentist. “Our job is people related and what Robert really loves is that he’s got third generation patients. He loves the relationship he’s built up with people and in all our married life I’ve never once heard him say ’I don’t want to go to work’ - he just loves it.” Beaconsfield Dental provides all aspects of general and advanced dentistry including regular dental check-ups, emergency dentistry, cosmetic dentistry, tooth whitening and bleaching, composite and porcelain veneers, extractions, wisdom tooth removal, root canal therapy, minor orthodontics, full and partial dentures, crowns, bridges, implants and x-rays and much more. Beaconsfield Dental is located at 1-3 Cardinia Street in Berwick. For more information, phone 9707 3508 or visit beaconsfielddental.com.au.

Communication is the key to a successful personal and working relationship according to Kay Drysdale, who with husband Jim, has run Drysdale’s Berwick Village Jewellery since 1984. Jim is a master jeweller who has been honing his craft since 1956 when he started in the industry as a 17 year old apprentice. “He spent a year in his youth thinking he might be a panel beater, but he has always been a jeweller,“ said Kay. The couple moved their business from Noble Park to Berwick in 1984, occupying a shop previously devoted to clock making. Thirty four years later Drysdale’s Berwick Village Jewellery is an institution. The couple’s adult son Raymond, who has special needs, is also a familiar site at the shop and around Berwick, cheerily greeting the many people who know him. Jim and Kay also have a daughter and two grandchildren. Before meeting Jim, Kay was a medical receptionist at Murray House in Dandenong. Their romance was kindled when Kay was bridesmaid for her friend who was marrying Jim’s brother. Earlier this year the couple celebrated their golden wedding anniversary with a “marvellous“ flight in an old crop duster over the Great Ocean Road. Kay said after so many years she and Jim operate like a well-oiled machine. “Jim is the jeweller and I do all the buying and organising. I deal with the reps and the selection of jewellery. I take care of the business

Driven by the success Many readers will be familiar with the Autobarn store in Narre Warren. But what readers may not know is that this fantastic local retailer is a proud family business with a long history in the automotive industry. In fact, the family connection goes right back to before Autobarn existed. In March 1977,Graeme Sheedy opened his own automotive parts store, known as Warragul Auto Accessories. In August 1985, Graeme and 9 other like-minded automotive retailers came together and decided to create a buying and marketing group, this was the beginning of the Autobarn. Graeme’s son, Gavin, started working alongside his father at Autobarn Warragul in 1990 and continued to do so until Graeme sold the business in 1993. However, Gavin wasn’t done. He continued with his passion for all things automotive and moved into a role with Autobarn head office as part of the merchandising team. Gavin then spent the next 6 years travelling to many destinations Australia wide setting up new franchise stores. Gavin met his wife, Nicole, while setting up a country store. They married in 1999 and Gavin decided to transfer from his head office role to the newly established Narre Warren store later that year. Since then the store has gone from strength to strength and continues to be a leader within the Autobarn group, collecting several prestigious awards along the way. In 2004 Gavin and Nicole welcomed their daughter Ashley and became owners of the Narre Warren store in 2005.
Gavin and his father Graeme in the early days of Autobarn.
We’ll take life’s journey with you...
The new generation: Gavin and daughter Ashley. Ashley gained exposure to the operations of the store through many years of visiting her father at work and finally joined the team in an official capacity earlier this year. Gavin and Nicole’s son Joshua was born in 2007 and like his older sister has gained exposure to the business on the regular visits. Joshua is also sure to be part of the Narre Warren team in the future. Gavin attributes much of his success to what he learnt from his parents and his time in the shop when he was younger. He believes that no matter what Ashley and Joshua choose to do in the future, the skills they learn from retail and customer service will give them a very good start on the road to success.

Proud publishing history Star News Group, publisher of this newspaper, has a proud family history of its own. Star has been owned and managed by four generations of the Thomas family. The business was founded by Albert Edward Thomas in Berwick in 1909. Albert had begun in the newspaper profession in Avoca in 1881 and later moved to Melbourne, where he worked for several city newspapers. Albert married Elizabeth Cox Southern on 13 April 1900 and they had two children, Beatrice and Herbert. The family moved to Berwick in 1909 to start their own newspaper. The office was just opposite St Margaret’s School on Gloucester Avenue and the family lived in Rutland Road, off Peel Street. Herb Thomas began working with his father by the time he was 12, the year the Great War broke out in 1914. The worth of the Berwick Shire News and Pakenham and Cranbourne Gazette newspaper became widely known and a group of Pakenham business people persuaded Albert to move his business there in 1917. The masthead turned around to the Pakenham Gazette and Berwick Shire News and was produced out of an old wooden building in Main Street. By this stage Herb was firmly entrenched in the family business and had unknowingly embarked upon a long and dedicated service to the Pakenham community. Herb’s son Ian joined the business in 1951, attending the Melbourne College of Printing in Latrobe Street to learn to operate a linotype machine. Ian and his wife Dorothy became the third generation of the family to head up the business when Herb died suddenly in 1979.

John Hill (pictured) and his and wife Susan started Fountain Gate Bingo Centre 28 years ago. 184056 Picture: ROB CAREW
Couple’s full card of fun Susan and John Hill have been the proud owners and operators of the Fountain Gate Bingo (FGB) Centre for the past 28 years. Venue Manager James Rooney explained that Susan started bingo fundraising at Springvale City Soccer Club in 1982 to assist her son and all playing at the club. "Having the experience of conducting bingo, Susan and John found that bingo sessions were a fantastic way of fundraising for their clubs as a social and entertaining night out," James said. "On Saturday 15 December 1990 they started the FGB and have seen many changes in legislation, the operation of bingo and the introduction of Electronic Bingo, which has been a vital factor in keeping bingo in the forefront of modern gambling. "Susan and John are proud of what they have achieved at the FGB Centre, employing up to 30 of the most professional and competent staff in minor gaming (bingo) in the Melbourne metro area."
Fountain Gate Bingo is one of Victoria's leading bingo centres offering over $125,000 in prize money every week. "For as little as $10 you can spend up to four hours and win as much as $10,000 in one game of bingo," James said. "Fully catered and air-conditioned for your comfort, bingo at Fountain Gate is the most social form of gambling and is the best value for money." By law, bingo in Victoria must be played on behalf of a sporting club or community organisation. Fountain Gate Bingo raises funds for 10 sporting clubs within the City of Casey including the Doveton Eagles Football Club, Langwarrin Soccer Club and Narre Warren Junior Football Club. Fountain Gate Bingo is open Tuesday to Friday from 10am to 3pm, Saturday 10am to 11pm and Sunday to Friday 6pm to 11pm. SPORT
A-League at Casey Fields? By Nick Creely Casey Fields will play host to the majority of Team 11's home games in its debut A-League season if it is granted a licence to join the national competition. The sporting precinct - which plays host to a raft of sports and is the home of Melbourne Demons' AFLW side and also has AFL pre-season matches at the site - will give Team 11 an readymade local option to host matches while the construction of a rectangular stadium next to Dandenong Train Station is completed. The build time for the boutique stadium would be approximately two years, subject to A-League entry and State Government funding, meaning that Team 11 would need to find an alternative. City of Casey Mayor Geoff Ablett confirmed that they will host the Team 11 side for the majority of their matches. "Casey Fields is already the premier regional sport, recreation and play precinct in Melbourne's south-east, known widely for its size and success in providing such a diverse mix of quality facilities for a range of sports and recreation opportunities," he said. "We are confident that the intimate capacity, uninterrupted sight lines and ample standing room around the venue will provide a unique and enjoyable experience for A-League fans in the early evolution of Team 11." Team 11 project officer Matt Windley said that it was extremely important to keep matches in the south-east. "We are a club that will be representing a specific part of the state. Why would we take our games away from that region when many of our potential fans are telling us that distance to the city is one thing preventing them from
becoming hard-core followers of Melbourne's existing clubs," he said. "In an ideal world we would be playing out of Dandenong Stadium from day one, but the reality is stadiums are not built overnight. "For the sake of football's future 10, 50, 100 years from now, we think the potential of having a boutique rectangular stadium in the middle of one of the country's major population hubs is an

exciting proposition worth waiting for." In a show of support for the progress of Team 11's bid, a large host of local south-east clubs gathered at Casey Fields on Tuesday 14 August to brainstorm about the bid, and to find out any further information. Power clubs in the region such as Dandenong City, Berwick City and number of others were in attendance, as the excitement builds
ahead of some key deadlines. Final bids are due by 31 August, and the announcement of the two successful bids is expected by 31 October. There are currently 10 active bids (including Team 11) across Australia, with South Melbourne FC and Western Melbourne the other Victorian regions looking to obtain an ALeague licence in 2019/20.
The Cavs are primed for Big V grand final action.

Grand final time at the business end for Cavs’ season By Hayley Wildes With a spot in the Big V Division 1 women's grand final up for grabs, it was the Casey Cavaliers' defence that got them over the line and into the big dance. They join the Cavs Youth League 2 women - who booked their place in the grand final a week earlier - in the Championship round. Taking on the Geelong Supercats at Casey Stadium on Saturday night, the Cavs were at their suffocating best, limiting the Supercats to a measly six points in the first quarter. Despite not being able to take full advantage of their defensive work due to their inefficiency on offence, the Cavs five-point quarter berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au
time lead was increased to 10 at half time. Loni Jeffs scored 10 vital first half points and was the one player able to find her offensive rhythm early. The third quarter was when Casey's offence returned to normal programming as they opened the second half on an 8-0 run and held Geelong scoreless for the first four minutes of the quarter. Steph Pal lit up the third quarter with eight points and with a quarter to play, the Cavs had a massive 20-point lead. With the game all but over, the Supercats outscored the Cavs 19-14 in the final quarter, but it mattered little as the Cavs booked their
place in the grand final with a comprehensive 64-49 win. Casey's defensive work was the highlight as they held Geelong to just 26% shooting from the field and never allowed them back in the game after jumping out to an early lead. Loni Jeffs (16 points, 5 rebounds) led the way for the Cavs and produced big plays when no one else could. Tarryn Wilkin (10 rebounds, 9 points) and Jamie-Lee Jeffs (10 points, 8 rebounds) were important, while Stephanie Pal (10 points, 5 rebounds) provided a nice boost off the bench. Looking ahead, it would be an understatement to say it's going to be a massive
two weeks for both the Division 1 and Youth League 2 women's teams. With Championship glory on the line, both tip-off their respective best-of-three grand final series on the road this weekend. The Division 1 women make the long trip over to Warrnambool to face the Mermaids on Saturday from 6pm, while the Youth League 2 women will take on the Blues in Frankston at the same time. After finishing on top of their respective competitions, both Cavs teams have homecourt advantage, meaning games two and three (if necessary) will be played at Casey Stadium the following weekend. Beaconsfield’s super day By Hayley Wildes One might think football careers end when your mid-30s roll around, but Superules football is proving you can play well into your 50s if the passion still burns. Superules is football for the over 35s and recently Beaconsfield - in the last round of the season - celebrated what may just be the most impressive games milestone haul in a single match ever. Col Cameron (200 games), Peter Lowe (150 games), Collin Ross (150 games), Paul La Roche (100 games), Shaun Stirton (100 games) and Darren Hansen (100 games) all reached major milestones on August 12. With 800 combined games played, it was a moment to savour for the club. Football has brought those involved with the Beaconsfield Superules together, but it's about much more than the game that keeps everyone coming back. It's the comradery and mateship that makes the group special. Cr Collin Ross, Mayor of the Cardinia Shire Council, has been involved with the Beaconsfield Superules since 2004 and he has seen the positive physical effects firsthand. "I think a lot of guys that have played football earlier in their lives really enjoy that team and club atmosphere," he said. "We're a long time retired from football, so when you can keep doing an activity with people that you enjoy being around, it's a whole lot easier than trying to go out there by yourself - it gives a purpose to keeping fit and active." He also talked about the importance of Superules for mental health. "A lot of guys go through divorce, partners who pass away or family members going through tough times, and the comradery

The partnership between Casey Basketball and the YMCA Open Doors program may be a new one, but the positive effects are already being felt within the City of Casey. With Casey Basketball getting behind YMCA Open Doors - an initiative that provides full or subsidised access to YMCA programs and services to people in need - the program will be able to provide even more programs to those in the local community that need them most. "Our association embraces worthy causes, and are proud to support the YMCA Open Doors Program," Casey Basketball general manager Tammy Bower said. "We see first-hand the benefits this program has made in the local community, and look forward to future opportunities to work together." Casey Basketball's connection to the City of Casey is immense and with this new partnership, that connection becomes even stronger. YMCA Open Doors aims to help as many people as possible and the $992 raised by Casey Basketball - through hosting multiple sausage sizzles, a raffle and a Big V round - will help four people undertake swimming lessons for nine months. "Within the Casey municipality, we have a lot of kids that don't have much experience with water," YMCA community engagement coordinator Tori Norris said. "Because of this, one of our big focuses is helping kids gain basic water safety training and making sure that, if the situation occurred, they could get themselves out of danger." Norris has seen the positive effect the program has on those involved. "It's unbelievable and this might be something that some of us take for granted, but they've got something to go to school and talk about," she said. "It gives them the ability to be more inclusive with other kids. "The power of sport blows me away each

Wickers apply the heat By Nick Creely SOUTH EAST FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE REVIEW - ROUND 16 Berwick and Narre Warren may have had their eyes firmly fixed on what's yet to come, but Saturday provided a fascinating glimpse into the mindset of both clubs entering finals. With notable outs including Madi Andrews, Jo West and Michael Riseley for the Wickers and Brad Scalzo and Nick Scanlon sitting out for the Magpies, depth was on display, and the Wickers proved too strong, 8.19 (67) to 4.6 (30). Perhaps their only blemish was their goal kicking, but it was nonetheless an impressive performance driven by a class display from Bryce Rutheford, who was simply sublime. The Magpies' defence was certainly under its fair share of duress across the day, but despite the Wickers' dominance, they could only hold a nine-point lead at quarter time. At quarter time, Wickers coach Stewart Kemperman lauded his side for its 12 inside 50 tackles, saying "we're on boys, I can feel it." They certainly were, producing a quality second quarter to extend their margin to 26 at the main break, a lead that the Magpies were unable to claw back from. Rutherford's presence was immense, offering plenty from the inside before bursting away to be a menace with his run, and his teammates lifted with him, with the likes of Luke Sheppard, Luke Jellyman-Turner and Reece Piper finding a stack of the footy to give their forwards plenty of looks at goal. After struggling to deal with the wave of pressure supplied by the Wickers, the Magpies could only add one major in the third term courtesy of a cracking running goal by Jake Richardson, and starred down the barrel of a heavy defeat. Magpies coach Matt Shinners issued a challenge to his players ahead of the final quarter, staring his players in the eyes and delivering a message. "We haven't really worked for each other let's see if we can work to instruction," he said. "Let's at least try and win this quarter, and finish it off." They did win the last quarter, snaring two late goals, with Dylan and Ryan Quirk once again prominent, while Joel Zietsman was once again impressive in defence. But it was a quality effort from the reigning premiers, who have hit top gear at exactly the right time of the season. "I'm certainly happy with our effort, and our application to the contest, and I suppose we didn't execute as well as we would have liked," Kemperman said of the game.
Beaconsfield's Tylah Stokoe runs into goal on Saturday against Cranbourne. 184189 Pictures: ROB CAREW "But there are plenty of areas of improvement." Down at Frenken Homes Oval, Beaconsfield gained a huge confidence booster with a gritty win over Cranbourne, 8.10 (58) to 6.8 (44). Now with three wins ahead of finals, it's the perfect preparation for the Eagles, who have built steadily after a raft injuries. Leading at every change, the Eagles showed great maturity, with the likes of Tylah Stokoe, Matt Homfray, Damien Johnston and Jake Bowd leading from the front to claim a late season scalp. "My boys really enjoy playing them, it's always a challenge and the players have a great amount of respect for each other from both clubs," Beaconsfield coach Leigh McQuillen said of the match. McQuillen believes his side was even across the board, and was thrilled with how his group
matched up on the Eagles' quality forward line and midfield. "(It was) very pleasing - it's two pronged as you not only have to get your match ups right on their key targets but you also have to win more of the midfield battle," he said. "We believe we did well in both areas after they defeated us at their home ground earlier in the year. "They're a good side and they do play an extremely attacking brand so we invested the time into them earlier in the year knowing we had them again and possibly in the finals." For the Eagles, usual suspects Brandon Osborne and Michael Wenn were terrific. And Tooradin-Dalmore held on to register a nail biting win over finals bound Officer in their final game of the season, 11.16 (82) to 12.7 (79). Down by the Westernport and with a stiff breeze, the Seagulls held the Kangaroos score-

In a see sawing final half, the Seagulls once again used the wind to their advantage to work out to a 29 point lead with a quarter to play, and despite being held goalless in the final term, held on to win narrowly. Andrew Dean finished his strong year off with three majors next to his name in a quality display, while Luke McKenna, Nathan Goodacre and Jake O'Donnell all played well. For the Kangaroos on a disappointing day, Tyler Clark, James Waldon and Will Hanson were all important contributors. In the final game of the round, Pakenham finished the year off on a high with a comfortable win over Doveton, 14.9 (93) to 5.9 (39). The Lions and Doves were neck and neck for the first half, but Ash Green's side powered away with a 12 goal to three final half.
Eagles’ main man signs on By Nick Creely
201807161888_1-RA31-18
Cranbourne coach Steve O'Brien has been locked away, with the Eagles' main man signing a contract extension to the end of the 2020 season. After a review of the football coaching appointments for 2019, a unanimous vote of confidence was given towards the re-appointment of O'Brien, with the club announcing on Thursday 16 August to its members that he will stay on for a further two years in a sign they are looking for stability into the future. O'Brien has brought through plenty of youth in his first season in charge, but has his side well and truly in the premiership frame to challenge after finishing in third spot on the SEFNL ladder.
Football director Manny Vella is thrilled with the signing of O'Brien, and said it was important for the future of the club as it embarks on a new challenge in 2019. "The club is now well positioned to continue its growth on and off the field and we look forward to the likely move to the MPNFL in 2019," he said in a statement. Vella said that O'Brien has exceeded all expectations in his first year, stripping things back and backing in his style, something that has made them one of the most eye-catching sides to watch. "We're extremely happy (with O'Brien's progress) - on field, we're probably 12 months ahead of where we thought we'd be," he said. "Our average age has actually gone significantly down, so we're extremely pleased."

Bulls score upset win over Hawks
By Hayley Wildes
By Hayley Wildes and Nick Creely EASTERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 1 - ROUND 17 Noble Park came to play against Rowville and delivered a thrilling upset win over the Hawks at Seebeck Oval on Saturday. A five-goal to one second term set up the win for the Bulls as Jake Gains, Cosimo Anagnostou and Piva Wright (three goals) played pivotal roles across the ground. The Hawks came storming home in the final term, but were unable to pull off the comeback, falling short by 10 points - 11.13 (79) to 10.9 (69). Aaron Bond was impressive for Rowville in a disappointing day that now sees them fall to fifth with a round to play. A win against the lowly East Ringwood Kangaroos on Saturday will guarantee the Hawks a finals berth. SOUTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 2 - ROUND 18 On the eve of finals, the Doveton Eagles sent an ominous warning to the rest of the league as they claimed the minor premiership with a brutal 103-point win over the fourth-placed Keysborough, 23.16 (154) to 8.3 (51). A barnstorming nine-goal second term set up the win as the Eagles - led by Darren Sheen (seven goals), Russell Robertson (four goals) and Nick Battle - flexed their muscle. Riet Pal stood up for the Burras. DIVISION 3 - ROUND 17 Endeavour Hills took care of the lowly Black Rock with an 11.9 (75) to 4.5 (29) win. Nathan Reid and Byron Hoe were dominant for the Falcons. Hallam came agonisingly close to claiming its first win of the season but fell 7.4 (46) to 5.9 (39) against Ashwood. Rory McIvor and Dylan Thompson almost got the Hawks over the line with superb performances. Hampton Park's dominant season continued with a demolition of South Yarra. A ninegoal to one opening term had the game all but won at quarter-time and the Redbacks went onto win 22.18 (150) to 3.8 (26). Michael Henry was sublime for Hampton Park. Springvale Districts claimed a win over Heatherton, 13.15 (93) to 4.3 (27). Mladen Josic was best for the Dees, while Justin Whyte was strong for Heatherton. DIVISION 4 - ROUND 18 In the final round of the season, Dandenong claimed its fourth win of the season with a solid performance against the bottom-placed and highly inaccurate Sandown Cobras. The Redlegs led at every change as Michael Scott's fine season was completed with another striking performance, which included three goals. Dandenong claimed the win, 9.8 (62) to 3.13 (31). For the Cobras, Nathan Isles and Shane Cosstick were best.
Demons’ streak snapped
Noble Park's Luke Nelson (7), Luke Bull (2), and Ali Zijai (64) celebrate the win over Rowville on Picture: ROB CAREW the final siren. 184232 Carrum Patterson Lakes - who had already wrapped up the minor premiership - were beaten by Frankston in an absolute thriller. It was a back-and-forth battle all day, and with the Dolphins leading by one point at the final break, they held on for a classic win, 7.6 (48) to 7.5 (47). Carrum Patterson Lakes were led by Toby Darma and Liam Hickman. Lyndhurst was a class above Moorabbin as they held the Kangaroos scoreless for the first three quarters, eventually running out 17.16 (118) to 1.1 (7) winners. Jarrod Murphy (five goals) was dynamic for the Lightning. Cerberus completely dominated Lyndale from start to finish to claim a massive 17.16 (118) to 1.1 (7) win. The Pumas had no answers for the offensive weapons that Cerberus possessed. MORNINGTON PENINSULA NEPEAN DIVISION TWO - WEEK 1 FINALS Red Hill powered away to a barnstorming qualifying final win against Karingal at Somerville on Saturday, 8.11 (59) to 3.9 (27). The Hillmen were up by seven points at three quarter time in a slow scoring encounter, before slamming the door shut by kicking four unanswered goals in the final term. Down at RJ Rowley Reserve on Sunday,
Langwarrin knocked out Chelsea from the premiership race in a tight elimination final, 9.15 (69) to 8.9 (57). The Kangaroos got the jump to lead by 28 at quarter time, and managed to hold off the Seagulls, who came close to running all over the top of their opponents with a gallant final term. Dromana will take on Red Hill in the second semi-final at Hastings on Saturday, while Karingal get another chance on Sunday when they do battle with Langwarrin. SOUTH EAST WOMEN'S FOOTBALL DIVISION 1 - WEEK 1 FINALS Cranbourne's finals dreams are over after they were unable to kick a winning score against Mornington at Holm Park Reserve on Sunday afternoon. The Eagles trailed by just two points at the main break, but the Bulldogs scored two vital third-quarter goals and despite kicking with the wind in the final term, Cranbourne couldn't find the goals they so desperately craved. Mornington claimed the win, 3.7 (25) to 1.6 (12). Alicia Heins starred for Cranbourne in a dynamic display, while Brooke Campbell and Shani Dixon battled hard all day.
Riding a 12-game winning streak, the Casey Demons came crashing back to earth over the weekend as the Box Hill Hawks thoroughly outworked them. In terrible conditions at Box Hill City Oval, the Demons were unable to work their way into the game as the Hawks simply wanted the ball, and the win, more. Although it was an even first quarter, the Hawks dominated proceedings in the second term and then kicked away with a brutal third quarter performance. With the wind and rain playing havoc, Hawk David Mirra was one of the few players able to navigate the conditions and he looked a class above from the outset. Despite trailing by just 13 points at halftime, 4.7 (31) to 2.6 (18), the Demons were thoroughly outplayed and it all fell apart in a devastating third term display from the Hawks. Dangerous Hawk small forward James Murphy booted two goals, helping his side to a seven-goal to three third quarter. For Casey, the likes of Corey Wagner, Declan Keilty and Jay Lockhart were working hard but there simply wasn't enough help around the ground. The Demons trailed by 37 points after three quarters and despite the win likely being out of reach, Casey still had plenty to play for as percentage may become a factor in the race for a top-two finish. Casey limited the bleeding in the final term, eventually falling by 45 points, 13.13 (91) to 6.10 (46). Corey Wagner's relentless attack never wavered - he and Tom Bugg collected 28 disposals each - while Jay Lockhart (22 disposals, 2 goals) never gave up. Tim Smith missed his chances in front of goal, but he presented well and gave a contest in the air all day. On an otherwise dour day for Casey, former Dandenong Stingray Tom Freeman made an impressive VFL debut. He competed hard and his second and third efforts stood out in the trying conditions. Entering the final round, Casey (14-3) sits on top of the ladder, but a loss to Williamstown (12-5) on Saturday afternoon at Casey Fields could see the Demons drop to third. In what is an extremely tight top-three, a win will guarantee Casey the minor premiership, but if Richmond and Geelong win and Casey lose, the Demons will fall out of the allimportant top-two.
The Rays score a perfect 10 By Hayley Wildes It wasn't easy, but when the game was there to be won, the Dandenong Stingrays answered the challenge and claimed their 10th win on the trot in typically tough Ballarat conditions on Saturday afternoon against the Geelong Falcons. The Falcons came out firing and had the Rays on the back foot as their aggressive attack on the ball paid dividends early. Uncharacteristically, the Rays were unable to lock down in defence and at quarter time, trailed by three goals to one. Dandenong peppered the goals but couldn't convert its early second quarter dominance, and when Oscar Brownless kicked truly at the 16-minute mark of the term, the Falcons held a two-goal lead. Second-gamer Cody Weightman slotted a set shot from a tight angle - his first goal in TAC Cup footy - with just over four minutes remaining in the term to give the Rays an important lift heading into half-time. 48 STAR NEWS

The Rays finally kicked into gear in the third term, playing the type of attacking and ruthless football fans have become accustomed to this season. The leaders stood up as Campbell Hustwaite and Bailey Williams took control of the game. Hustwaite continued to throw his body at the footy relentlessly and did plenty of heavy lifting at stoppages. Dandenong owned the third term; holding the Falcons goalless, while scoring three of their own. Majors to Zac Foot, Sam Sturt and Finlay Bayne had the Rays 12 points up at the final break. The fourth quarter was a battle of attrition as neither team was able to score the goal they so desperately craved. That was until Falcon - and possible number one pick - Sam Walsh stepped to the fore and put through a classy goal from just inside 50, reducing the margin to six points. With the game on a knife's edge, the crowd was treated to the 'Sam Sturt Show' in the final
The Rays recorded their 10th win in a row over the weekend. 181553 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS three-and-a-half minutes. In just his second game of TAC Cup footy, the surprise-packet forward proved to be the game-winner. Two goals - a roving snap, followed by a set shot after out-marking two opponents - in less than two minutes gave the Rays an 18-point win, 7.13 (55) to 5.7 (37). Captain Campbell Hustwaite, Lachlan Young and Bailey Williams impressed, while
Sam Sturt's three second-half goals were ultimately the difference. The Rays (14-1), who boast a 10-game winning streak and the minor premiership, incredibly haven't lost a game since April. In what should be a great test on the eve of the finals, Dandenong faces the third-placed Sandringham Dragons at Trevor Barker Beach Oval on Saturday morning. berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au
