Running for life By Cam Lucadou-Wells
Brad Scicluna with his family Charlotte, Olivia and Catherine. 184199 He’s still worked - but wound it back to 40 hours a week, cut out sugars in a healthyeating regime, and taken family holidays with wife Catherine and daughters Olivia and Charlotte. In September, Brad and Catherine will renew their vows.

The family had cancelled a dream trip to Hawaii and then Disneyland due to Mr Scicluna being unable to get travel insurance. “We just should have done it earlier,” Ms Scicluna said. “People should just do things - don’t put them off.

Nothing will stop Lynbrook husband and dad Brad Scicluna from running. In fact, the 41-year-old engineer at Dandenong bus manufacturer Volgren believes that exercise has been a tonic after a devastating diagnosis of stage-4 gall bladder cancer a year ago. It’s a rare cancer that means Mr Scicluna is without any PBS-listed treatment options such as immunology. He discovered that not all cancers are equal. There’s a potentially life-extending medication Herceptin that is available on the PBS for breast cancer patients but not gall bladder cancer, Mr Scicluna says. The treatment cost would be a prohibitive $70,000 a year. A specialist told him “the more money you have the longer you live.” It’s a form of discrimination that Mr Scicluna is challenging. He’s put his name to a National Oncology Alliance campaign on behalf of more than 6000 Australians with cancer without PBS-listed medications. He will be attending a Canforum in Canberra in September, in the hope of putting his case to Health Minister Greg Hunt. Before June 2017, Mr Scicluna - a nonsmoker, light drinker and avid runner - had rarely seen the inside of a hospital. He complained to a doctor of a sore back while he was boundary umpiring in the Casey Cardinia Football League. It was discovered that he had cancer that had spread to his lower vertebrae. Since months of chemo and radiotherapy, Mr Scicluna’s condition has fortunately stabilised. He has had no treatment for two months and run well past his expiry date - at least the one that doctors expected. And continued running about six kilometres a day, with a view to running 10 kilometres at the Melbourne Marathon in October. “It’s a bit of a miracle,” Mr Scicluna said. “The oncologist has only seen one other case like me. You wouldn’t know there was anything wrong with me.” Mr Scicluna believes exercise helped ward off the side-effects of chemo and radiotherapy. He’d work out for 30 minutes before chemo, and for 30 minutes after.

Ram-raid thieves flee
Singer is on song By Cam Lucadou-Wells Aspiring singer Tusi Matia, of Keysborough, is a man of many voices. Country, rock, funk, reggae, metal, blues he revels in the nuances of each and every variety. "With country, you get into a nice groove. Rock and metal, I extend and project my voice so eventually it becomes natural. "With the others, I learn techniques like when to stop and pause. "In the end, I integrate all that I learn into one." He is one of a handful of students taking classes in all six music genres at his Diploma of Music Industry studies at Kangan Institute. Singing was a passion that he only recently discovered, as he pondered on what to do after Year 11 and a short-lived try at a gaming course. "I found myself listening to a lot of music. I'd have my headphones on and getting lost. "I thought to myself it could be an option." He'd never sang, never played a musical instrument. Yet, Mr Muti successfully auditioned for the Kangan Institute Course. From birth, Mr Matia was afflicted with hearing and vision loss due to Crouzon Syndrome. But from an early age, he enjoyed the smorgasboard of musical tastes delivered by his mother (a fan of the 1950s and 1960s "old school", and classical music) and his uncle (rap). Recently, Mr Matia was awarded an $8000 Vision Australia bursary. It has allowed him to buy cutting-edge technology for his studies. He's replaced his desktop with a laptop, so he can now work on the long train to Broadmeadows. He uses an ingenious reading-camera that
By Cam Lucadou-Wells Thieves have tried to steal an ATM during a ram-raid at a Keysborough shopping centre. A stolen truck rammed the front of a lottery outlet near the corner of Kingsclere Avenue and Corrigan Road shortly after 5am on 21 August, a police spokesperson said. “At least two offenders attempted to take an ATM machine but were unsuccessful before fleeing in another vehicle, described as a green Holden Commodore.“ Police believe the truck was stolen from a property on Hammond Road, Dandenong earlier that morning. Hours later, a morning shopper Mark said he was shocked by the sight of the “huge flattray truck” fully immersed in the building. “It’s gone right through the double-sliding doors - it’s the whole length of the truck. “There’s a lot of carnage and debris there and a whole bunch of police officers there.” Police had still cordoned off the area at mid-morning, Mark said. “It’s the weirdest way to start your day. “You don’t expect to see this at your local shops.” Any information to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or crimestoppersvic.com.au.

It has essentially meant Mr Matia no longer depends on a note-taker in class. Mr Matia has written several songs, and is preparing to perform and record an album
with his class late this year. After that, the aim is to go out and do gigs, he says. "I want to branch out. I know it will take a while to get where I want to be. "Start small and dream big."

IN BRIEF Two men charged over armed carjacking
Fake-bomber on ice By Cam Lucadou-Wells A man who used a cocktail of 'ice' and psychiatric medication threatened to detonate a device from his belt and turn Dandenong PSOs into "pink mist", a court has heard. Damien Elfring, 42, of Doveton, had taken issue with four PSOs following a group of people on 28 January, namely that one of the PSOs was armed with capsicum spray. He became aggressive in several exchanges over the next 40 minutes. At one point Elfring pulled a small black item from his belt and told the officers that it was a bomb, the court heard. On his arrest, officers seized a pocket-knife, a container of razor blades and deal-bags from Elfring - who described himself as a "doomsday prepper". He had intended just to antagonise the PSOs, not to carry out the threats, Elfring later told police. Elfring told Dandenong Magistrates' Court
on 20 August that he needed to take 'ice' to "motivate" himself, to counteract his medication's sedative effects. "I'm not motivated to do anything, I put on excessive amounts of weight and I don't even enjoy watching TV," he said. "I'm just a zombie." With ice, he had the will to exercise and lose weight, he told the court. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen warned Elfring that the consequences were harmful. "Damien, you need to listen to the mental health team. When you're taking the depot injection, it is not a good idea to take ice. "Ice is a very dangerous drug. You should not be taking it - no one should be." Elfring pleaded guilty to all charges, including grabbing his neighbour in a tight headlock and telling him to "go to sleep" during a confrontation outside the victim's house in March. The victim told police he struggled as he lost consciousness. At one point, Elfring jumped
on top of the victim lying on the ground. A personal safety intervention order was issued to protect the victim, who suffered minor cuts to his buttock, face and body. Elfring hadn't since breached the intervention order, the court heard. He was also charged with shoplifting at bottle shops, a supermarket and Target store, as well as possessing a Stanley knife as a controlled weapon and failing to answer bail. Mr Vandersteen noted Elfring had been on a community treatment order for complex mental health issues over the past year, and was distressed by his dog going missing several months ago. Elfring's long criminal history had gone quiet in the past several years, Mr Vandersteen noted. Mr Vandersteen remanded Elfring to undertake a community corrections order assessment to address his drug and mental health issues.
Reaping for our growers at dress-up day Students have raised amazing feats to bail out drought-stricken farmers. At Harrisfield Primary School, student councillors recently dedicated their term fundraiser to helping out the nation's food providers. They organised a farmer dress-up day, raising upwards of $1600. "It's important that we all realise our main food source is provided by Australian farmers," staff member Cathy O'Brien said. At St Anthony's Primary School, teacher Deana Portia said students were moved by the stories of farmers struggling to feed their livestock - and even their families. Students, teachers, support staff and parents cooked up hot dogs and African cuisine for lunch, as well as cupcakes, friendship bracelets and bookmarks. Over two weeks, they have raised nearly $3000 for the fundraiser Buy a Bale.
Two Dandenong North men have been charged following an alleged carjacking in Melbourne's north. They were among five people arrested by Special Operations Group and Fawkner Embona Taskforce police at an address at Tylden Place, Westmeadows about 4.30pm on 20 August, police say. Two firearms were allegedly seized during the arrests. Police say that a 46-year-old man was carjacked by two men both armed with a gun as he sat in his car in a supermarket car park in Blair Street, Dallas just after midnight on 19 August. The men demanded the victim get out of his Mercedes, in which they drove off followed by another vehicle. The victim was not physically injured, police say. A 27-year-old Dandenong North man has been charged with aggravated carjacking and remanded to appear at Melbourne Magistrates' Court on 21 August. A 19-year-old Dandenong North man was charged with firearms offences and remanded to appear at Broadmeadows Magistrates' Court on 21 August. Two other men and a woman were arrested and released pending further enquiries, police say. The Mercedes has been recovered. Any information to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or crimestoppersvic.com.au.
Children spotted at fire Children in school uniforms were seen fleeing from a series of deliberate fires inside a house in Springvale South. Multiple fires were deliberately lit in the unoccupied premises at 15 Wardale Road about 4pm on 14 August, Greater Dandenong CIU police say. During the fires, a gas canister exploded and damaged several windows. There was otherwise minor fire damage and no injuries, police say. Springvale CFA extinguished the fires. Any information to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or crimestoppersvic.com.au.

Two people have been hospitalised after a twocar crash on Cheltenham Road, Keysborough. Paramedics and a CFA crew were called to the collision near the EastLink intersection about 5.55am on 22 August. A woman in her 20s suffered abdominal injuries and grazes, an Ambulance Victoria spokesperson said. A man in his 20s suffered facial injuries. They were both taken to The Alfred hospital in stable conditions.

The Caulfield to Dandenong Level Crossing Removal project has been nominated as a finalist at the Premier's Sustainability Awards 2018. The project is one of three finalists in the Built Environment category. According to the awards website, the sky rail project embraced "holistic sustainability" in design, construction and operation. It has removed nine level crossings in the Dandenong rail corridor and created 22.5 hectares of linear parkland under the structure.

Firey alert on gridlock By Cam Lucadou-Wells
a minimum of three metres clear road space when their car is parked to allow emergency vehicles to access the street. “If these road rules are not being adhered to and cars are being parked illegally then enforcement action can be taken to encourage compliance.” Nearby residents have spoken to Star News about their neighbourhoods being swamped with traffic and parked cars. Wei-Ling Tan says large trucks are using Perry Road as a rat-run through Somerfield Estate. “Historically speaking, it was used as a truck route before the houses came in. “But now we need the traffic to slow down where we have children walking, riding and playing.” Bangholme resident Alan Hood said there was a “big wave” of heavy-vehicle traffic still to arrive as an earmarked industrial zone near Corrigan and Greens roads develops. He says the housing estates shouldn’t have gone in the former Green Wedge zone in the first place, but felt sorry for the new suburbs of residents. “On the one hand, they’re innocent. They’ve been misled.” Greater Dandenong councillor Matthew Kirwan says there has been a “failure of plan-

He organised a recent road-safety forum in the suburb, where there was “clear support” for a pedestrian signal crossing at Tyers Lane and Perry Road. It would reduce speeding, enable pedestrians to cross to Clarendon Drive park and encourage heavy traffic to instead use Greens Road, Eastlink and Springvale Road. Ms Reid of Greater Dandenong Council said the council was reviewing potential treatments to ensure heavy vehicle volumes did not increase excessively.

Keysborough’s CFA brigade is feeling the crush of growing traffic and suburbia. At peak-times such as school pick-up next door, the station’s driveway on Chapel Road, Keysborough South is blocked by a slow-moving stream of cars. It’s something that worries the brigade’s captain Paul Townsend, who has noticed fire truck response times begin to slow and traffic increase “quite dramatically”. “On the double lane roads (like Perry Road), we can get through. People can pull over and let us past. “But with the single lanes and the increased traffic flow, that really affects us.” In recent years, the suburb has transformed in front of his eyes. There’s a new shopping centre, next door is Sirius College and the 50-year-old egg farm nearby has been sold for housing. Mr Townsend says many residents’ cars are clogging the side streets outside town houses, units and dwellings due to minimal on-site parking. “Every family has at least two cars, but they can only fit in one car in their driveway.” When cars are parked on both sides of narrow streets like Tyers Lane, there’s little room for a fire truck to get past. He fears it might lead to the brigade being blocked from reaching a unit on fire by parked cars. “The issue doesn’t seem to be getting much traction. I hope it will take a major issue like us not being able to get to a fire.” Greater Dandenong engineering services director Julie Reid said all the roads were designed to meet “appropriate and approved standards”. “The road rules require motorists to leave

Outcry over velodrome The daughter of Noble Park sports legend Maurice Kirby has spoken out against draft plans to demolish a velodrome named in his honour. Gayle George told Star News the family was not consulted by Greater Dandenong Council, which had proposed to remove the Parkfield Reserve cycling track for a shared cycling path, soccer fields and cricket nets. "The first I heard of it was when I was recently messaged on Facebook. "I was very disappointed." Her larger-than-life father Mr Kirby ran a cycling shop in Noble Park, was a sports caller and set up the enormously popular Pedals Club for hundreds of children in the 1950s. "Dad was interested in helping kids. He had a heart of gold," Ms George said. Tom Ortenburg was one of many children that benefited from Mr Kirby's kindness and passion for cycling. "Where are the facilities for riding? A place where you can ride around and teach the children in a safe environment. "People are riding bikes more and more. And we're taking facilities away." Meanwhile, cyclists are opposing the notion that the Maurice Kirby Velodrome is 'disused', as described in council documents. They are being backed by Cycling Victoria, which insists it is a required facility, though no formal cycling club is based there. Cyclist Kim Nguyen, of Springvale, says he trains at the track because it is a safer alterna-
tive for riding fast than on roads or bike paths. A Strava app lists the venue with the best times of up to 19 riders who train at Greater Dandenong's only velodrome. "Sometimes I reach speeds of up to 50km/h. You can't do that on bike paths where there are joggers, kids and cruising cyclists. "You need infrastructure to provide for cycling as a sport." Cycling Victoria chief executive Paul Jane said the velodrome was "an important community asset that has not been maintained to an acceptable standard". He said there was a widespread fear of riding bikes - 93 per cent of the population according to a state transport study - that could be overcome by safe places like velodromes. "Places like the Noble Park Velodrome provide and are free on any other conflicting users that you may find of an off road trail." Acting city planning director Ben Jackson told a 13 August council meeting that the velodrome was at the end of its life, and would require significant works to comply with current standards. He said there would be a move to recognise Mr Kirby at the site, if the removal went ahead. Engineering services director Julie Reid told Star News that a draft masterplan was created last year through "extensive" community consultation. "No final decision has been made in relation to this reserve," Ms Reid said. "Council has recently sought community feedback on the draft masterplan and is reviewing this feedback at the moment."

20 August 1968 The case of the missing Whistle
Sir - On behalf of High School committee we desire to make an appeal to the public for funds to assist us in liquidating the expenditure to be incurred in the erection of the High School at Dandenong. We have to raise £1000, and to do this, we appeal to all those who are interested in the advancement of education in Dandenong. There are many residents who are not property owners, and are therefore free from taxation, who are able and willing to assist, and this will give them an opportunity to help in so good a cause. Any donations left with the proprietor of this paper or the undersigned will be acknowledged.

A Dandenong bound train lost its whistle last week and dozens of travellers were lat getting into the city. the train on its way from Melbourne to Dandenong was scheduled to leave Dandenong for the return trip at 10.24am. It never made it to Dandenong while commuters sat wandered, cursed or wondered, the train waited patiently at Oakleigh Station - minus it's whistle. The whistle mechanism failed just before the train arrived at Oakleigh. Railway Department officials decided that because of the number of open level crossings between Oakleigh and Dandenong the train should not be used on this section of its scheduled journey. Would be train travellers at Dandenong were put aboard a bus to join the whistle less conveyance at Oakleigh for the remainder of their trip to the city. Be-
cause the bus stopped to pick up other passengers the train finally made it into Melbourne after noon.

Dec Serg Peter Stirling Springvale CIB said that many stores had accepted false $50 notes in the past fortnight. "It is just crucially important that all store owners are aware of what is happening and they are vigilant when it come to accepting money" Sg Stirling said "I would describe the current batch of notes as being a reasonable quality, so shopkeepers will need to stay alert".

19 August 2013 Police have their number Five drivers will face court following a police crackdown in Dandenong on August 8. The Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) operation lasted six hours and detected seven unregistered vehicles, one unlicensed driver, two learner driver offences and two un-roadworthy cars. Each received on the spot penalty notices. The disqualified drivers who were detected will face court including one whose car was impounded and two other drivers over interlock device offences. Dandenong Acting Sen Serg Duncan Bartley said the results served as a reminder that impound laws affected not only hoons and that having a licence was a privilege.

Discoveries everywhere The late Jack Johnson was the author of When The Clock Strikes, a fascinating account of growing up in Dandenong, his years tending to the city's pipes and drains as a plumber and bringing up a family with wife Frances in their beloved home in Macpherson Street. We entered the old O'Brien property at 59 Walker Street through a cast-iron and wire farm gate which opened into a paddock on the left of the house block. Next door to that paddock, at number 57, was the Doody's house. Buggy wheel tracks ran past the O'Brien house to the barn at the rear. That driveway ran alongside the low wire fence of the house and the single wire gate into the paved area between the two sections of the house. On the other side of the driveway were two plum trees, which when in season were laden with large blue plums.
JACK LOOKS
BACK JACK JOHNSON
Next along the driveway were a blood plum, a greengage plum and a nectarine tree all of which we were allowed to help ourselves to at any time. Between the fruit trees and the barn were the huge hollowed-out red gum vampire bat tree and the two beautiful willow trees. We also discovered that the ghost of Wiggy Walsh's grandfather did not haunt the loft of their old barn and the only vicious creatures in there were the occa-
sional horse, and the greatest variety of different breeds of chooks ever seen in one place outside of the Dandenong Show. When they were let out to feed on the green grass of the paddock we tried to count the many breeds. This we found impossible as they did not stay in one place long enough and the diversely coloured plumage was too great to remember. Over the back fence in 40 Clow Street, we only had white leghorns in our own chook shed and yard, whereas the chooks in the O'Brien barn were black, red, white and brindle and every other shade and speckle you could imagine. Mrs O'Brien sold both eggs and flowers to the public, and friends were allowed to safely park their horse and buggy in the paddock when they arrived in Dandenong on market days.

Off-duty PSO in bashing
Haileybury scoops the pool in awards Haileybury College has scooped the inaugural Australian Education Awards, including the top award of School of the Year. The college, which is based in Keysborough, also won the Non-Government Primary School of the Year at the awards in Sydney on 17 August. Haileybury chief executive Derek Scott said the awards reflected the college's outstanding teaching, hard work by students and great support by families. "Schools exist for one reason only and that is to deliver great education outcomes for students. "It also reflects the hard work of those students who do a wonderful job." Mr Scott was a finalist in the non-government school principal of the year section, as was Robert Johnson in the department head of the year award. Haileybury was also a finalist as non-government secondary school of the year. For the college, it was an endorsement of its Explicit Teaching Model that reaped great outcomes in its primary school. The model has also improved results in remote and disadvantaged schools. The college consistently ranks in the top 0.5 per cent of NAPLAN scores in the country. In 2017 VCE, three of its students achieved 99.95 ATAR scores. There were 39 perfect study scores of 50 across 11 subjects. The awards were organised by The Educator magazine. Its editor Brett Henebery said the night celebrated excellence as well as encouraging
By Cam Lucadou-Wells An off-duty Protective Services Officer (PSO) has been allegedly bashed in front of his sixyear-old son by a group of males at Parkmore Shopping Centre, Keysborough. The man was approached outside Nandos restaurant about 1.20pm on Sunday 19 August by a male demanding a cigarette. After refusing, the victim spoke to the male for several minutes, Greater Dandenong CIU police say. He was then pushed in the chest by a second male. The first male punched the officer in the face, causing a severely cut lip. The victim’s son was metres away, waiting just inside the shopping centre entrance. Police believe there was a third male nearby who was associated with the two offenders but wasn’t involved in the bashing. The three males were described as being of Pacific Islander appearance. Afternoon tea for the ages There's a nice custom going on between a childcare kindergarten and a neighbouring retirement village in Endeavour Hills. About once a month, Rose Garden Childcare and Kindergarten children pay a visit to View Hills Manor. Children sing songs, bear gifts and mingle with the retirement-home residents. "The children enjoy these events so much and talk about it for days to come," assistant director Tammy Ross said. In a reversal, the children got to host their elders on 9 August. The place was "filled with excitement", as the oldies and the youngies dug in for a special afternoon tea. It's a special relationship that develops the children's "sense of belonging" in the community and "awareness of the wonderful world beyond", Ms Ross said. History is a steel By Cam Lucadou-Wells Entries are still open for inclusion in Noble Park's 20-year stainless steel time capsule. As part of the elevated rail project, locals can contribute momentos such as voice recordings, old photos and drawings to the soon-to-be entombed capsule. Noble Park Girl Guides sent in their certificates, records and the Guides pledge - which will soon be buried and then resurrected in 2038.
A resident contributed family photos taken near the sky-rail's construction site. The capsule helps mark the momentous change of elevated rail bridges replacing Noble Park's elevated rail crossings. Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams said the capsule was about "capturing the past as we start a new chapter in Noble Park's history". "We are making Noble Park a better place to live, work and move around, and it's absolutely fitting to mark that transformation with
a time capsule." A Level Crossings Removal Authority spokesperson compared the transformation to dirt roads and paddocks making way to suburban streets. "(It is) bringing about more rapid change to the landscape, opening up new public space and ways for people to move around the suburb." Submit entries to contact@levelcrossings. vic.gov.au
The afternoon tea visit was great for a laugh.

Drug driver hits family By Cam Lucadou-Wells A 32-year-old disqualified drug-driver who crashed at high-speed into a car containing a family of five has been told by a judge that she was lucky not to have killed someone. Kayla Popowski, of Dandenong, was observed driving an unregistered vehicle "too fast" and out of her lane while travelling from the CBD to Warragul on 2 July 2017, Dandenong Magistrates' Court heard. At Mulgrave, her car collided with a Jeep containing a husband, wife and children aged 12, 3 and 5 months. The family's car rolled as a result of the crash, coming to rest in the far right lane. The family were trapped and had to be cut out of the car by emergency services. Popowski pleaded guilty to charges including reckless conduct endangering serious injury, dangerous driving, drug driving and driving an unregistered car arising from the Mulgrave crash on 2 July 2017. "You were very lucky that you and other people weren't seriously injured or killed,"
magistrate Jack Vandersteen said during sentencing on 20 August. Popowski had faced possible jail, but was given a longer-than-usual corrections order due to some mitigating factors, he said. Popowski was assessed as low functioning to the brink of being intellectually disabled. Jail would have been very onerous on her, Mr Vandersteen noted. At the hearing, Popowski was 32 weeks pregnant, and reported using drugs. She was couch surfing and hoping to find accommodation with homeless services provider WAYSS. He also noted her early guilty plea, as well as her selling her car and refraining from driving since the incident. Popowski had a limited history of driving offences in Victoria, though she'd also offended interstate including Tasmania. She was sentenced to a three-year supervised community corrections order with drug, maternal and mental health treatment. She was disqualified from driving for 30 months.
$1m ice seized in intercept A 26-year-old Noble Park man has been arrested after police allegedly seized more than $1 million of ice during a random intercept. Police allegedly approached the man getting on a BMW motorbike in Ashwood about 3am on 22 August. He allegedly fled on foot, throwing a backpack into a residential front yard.
After a search involving Oakleigh and Boroondara police officers, the man was found and arrested. More than 5 kilograms of the drug 'ice' and more than $3000 was allegedly seized from the backpack. A records check found that the motorcycle was allegedly stolen.

The line-up of vendors include Curry Up Now, Delicious Mauritius, Babaji's Kitchen, Taka Taka, Mobile Chakula and Hells Breath. "Dandenong Market is a multicultural hub offering authentic tastes from across the globe
A smorgasbord of curries are on offer at Dandenong Market's newest festival. - including several different curries cooked fresh on the spot from homemade recipes." Foodie Trails founder Himanshi Munshaw
Luhar said it was an event for "any foodie's calendar". "This is a wonderful opportunity for visi-
tors to try a range of curry delights paired with unmissable entertainment from countries that favour curries." Jail for two-month crime spree of thefts in South-East By Cam Lucadou-Wells A 24-year-old Narre Warren drug user has been jailed over a two-month spree of thefts throughout the South East in the summer of 2017-18. Joel Luke McCarthy pleaded guilty at Dandenong Magistrates' Court to 33 charges including the theft of a car, handling stolen goods, assaults, driving disqualified, speeding, failing to stop for police and running a red light. He handled stolen items such as a handbag, wallets, passports and number plates as well as using stolen bank cards to make purchases. More than 40 charges were withdrawn, with
an arson charge shifted for trial at a higher court. The mounting charge list across a host of suburbs in Melbourne's South East and East had not been finalised until recently. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen noted the sheer volume of offending and locations had at least partly contributed to the delay. "He certainly knows he caused a lot of trouble in a few months," a defence lawyer told the court on 20 August. "He is willing to do the time he deserves." At age 8, McCarthy had endured deep family tragedy without grief counselling or treatment. Afterwards, he was raised by his grand-
parents. McCarthy had graduated from cannabis use at 14 to being "controlled" by drugs such as ice and 'juice' (GHB) a decade later. He moved out of home due to his drug-fuelled "lifestyle" stressing his grandparents, the court was told. Over the past six months, he had been in remand custody. During that stint, he'd undertaken Narcotics Anonymous and Alcoholics Anonymous courses as well as vocational training, the court heard. At one point, McCarthy seemed taken aback when shown a photo of his former drug-
abused self soon after his arrest on 7 February. "It's shocking," he told the court. Magistrate Vandersteen told McCarthy: "I don't think I'd recognise you now." Mr Vandersteen took into account McCarthy's limited prior history, age, show of insight and the developmental impediment caused by his uncounselled childhood grief. jailed McCarthy for six months, declaring his time had been served in remand. McCarthy was however remanded for a committal mention for arson at Melbourne Magistrates' Court on 28 August. He was disqualified from driving for 12 months.

Popping up for seconds Inner Dandenong's popular sports courts are set to 'pop up' at a new, permanent home. Pop-Up Park was first conceived as a temporary court that outlived its expected lifetime opposite Dandenong railway station. It will re-open at a vacant site on the corner of Cadle and George streets by the end of 2018. The park, designed by local firm Playce, will cater for futsal, basketball and netball. The park will be funded by the state body Development Victoria, and maintained by Greater Dandenong Council.
Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams said the original court was a "great public place" embraced by locals. "I'm delighted we've been able to find a new, permanent home just around the corner. "Parks are a great public space which encourages community members of all ages and from all walks of life to come together and participate in sports."Greater Dandenong mayor Youhorn Chea welcomed the State Government's commitment to a permanent park in the revitalisation precinct. "The new location will benefit both local residents and businesses and will also be accessible to the broader community."

WE’RE POWERING FORWARD MAKING ENERGY MORE AFFORDABLE Free check-ups BreastScreen Victoria's pink van is on its way to Palm Plaza, Dandenong. The van offers free 10-minute screens for breast cancer for women over 50 - with no requirement for a doctor's referral or Medicare card. "Bringing the van to Palm Plaza will make it easier for women to screen," BreastScreen Victoria chief exceutive Vicki Pridmore said. "Women will be looked after by our welcoming female staff." Women aged 50-74 years are advised to have a breast screen every two years to detect breast cancer early. The van is at Palm Plaza from 14-27 September. Bookings: 13 20 50.
As Australia’s energy system transitions the Australian Government is making energy more affordable. We’ve turned the corner on electricity prices and reined in the power of the network companies. We’ve secured agreements with retailers to give customers a better deal – saving you hundreds of dollars a year. And we’ve ensured there’s enough gas for Australians before it’s shipped off shore.
Snapchat slapdown A woman in the public gallery at Dandenong Magistrates' Court got a stern word of warning about illegally filming court proceedings. While her brother appeared for his hearing, the woman was allegedly scanning the courtroom with her mobile phone. An eagle-eyed staff-member approached and claimed to see her hastily deleting a video file from Snapchat. Despite her denials, the magistrate ordered for PSOs to escort her out and check her Snapchat phone for messages. "I didn't delete it," the woman insisted after the PSO gave the phone the all-clear - and warned of the consequences if anything was found on her Snapchat account.
It’s actions like these today that power a more affordable energy future.
In the bag There's a nifty new idea to save shoppers who forget to bring reusable shopping bags. Parkmore Shopping Centre has introduced a bag library for shoppers to borrow a bag. On the other hand, shoppers who are storing up a surplus can leave their spares at the library.

The bizarre and tense struggle for the Prime Ministership has certainly seemed to put federal MPs through the wringer. The closing down of a Parliament sitting, three declared challengers to Prime Minister Turnbull, and Labor MPs putting on a united front - putting their own not-so-distant leadership turmoils behind them. At one point on 23 August, Hotham Labor MP Clare O'Neil extorted on her Facebook page: "Just call an election, for God's sake. Time to let the people decide."On the same day, Holt Labor MP Anthony Bryne posted a photo of him putting a hand on the upper arm of the Prime Minister in the House. FOCUS ON … TAX TIME
Clothing claims put through the wringer this tax time A focus on work-related clothing and laundry expenses this Tax Time will see the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) more closely examine taxpayers whose clothing claims don't suit them. "Last year around 6 million people claimed work-related clothing and laundry expenses, with total claims adding up to nearly $1.8 billion," Assistant Commissioner Kath Anderson said. While many of these claims will be legitimate, we don't think that half of all taxpayers would have been required to wear uniforms, protective clothing, or occupation-specific clothing." With clothing claims up nearly 20% over the last five years, the ATO believes a lot of taxpayers are either making mistakes or deliberately over-claiming. Common mistakes include people claiming ineligible clothing, claiming for something without having spent the money and not being able to explain the basis for how the claim was calculated "Around a quarter of all clothing and laundry claims were exactly $150, which is the threshold that requires taxpayers to keep de-
tailed records. We are concerned that some taxpayers think they are entitled to claim $150 as a 'standard deduction' or a 'safe amount', even if they don't meet the clothing and laundry requirements," Ms Anderson said. "Just to be clear, the $150 limit is there to reduce the record-keeping burden, but it is not an automatic entitlement for everyone. While you don't need written evidence for claims under $150, you must have spent the money, it must have been for uniform, protective or occupation-specific clothing that you were required to wear to earn your income and you must be able to show us how you calculated your claim." Ms Anderson said the ATO also has conventional clothing in its sights this year. "Many taxpayers do wear uniforms, occupation-specific or protective clothing and have legitimate claims. However, far too many are claiming for normal clothing, such as a suit or black pants." For more information about work-related expenses, visit ato.gov.au/deductions and to find out about myDeductions, visit ato.gov.au/ mydeductions.

The City of Casey propose to amend the 58 Doveton Avenue, Eumemmering Development Plan (The Development Plan). The Development Plan covers the area that was the former Eumemmerring Primary School, in between Frawley Road, Doveton Avenue and Waygara Street. The Development Plan is a strategic planning document that guides the development of the former school site. The proposed amendment will allow for residential development in the centre of the site to go to a height of three storeys, where the height was previously restricted to two storeys. The amendment also introduces further direction as to the siting and sustainability requirements of any proposed residential development.

The grand rise of Gahan By Hayley Wildes In a season full of positives for the Dandenong Stingrays, the play of Matthew Gahan - in his first season of TAC Cup football - has certainly been a pleasant surprise. The 18-year-old played his junior football at Balnarring and was planning on playing senior football for Red Hill in Division 2 of the Mornington Peninsula Nepean Football League this year, but after locking down a role in the Rays' rock-solid defensive unit, Gahan's plans quickly changed. "At the start of the year I never would've thought I'd be in this situation, so I'm just stoked to be where I am and with the team going so well," Gahan said. "I feel like I have found my role. Each game I gain more clarity in my role and what I have to do for the team." Gahan has relished the opportunity to learn and develop in the Rays' elite environment and credits the coaches for helping him make a smooth transition. "I've never been involved with the TAC Cup through any of my football career, so coming in now has been great," he said. "After playing local footy my whole life it was a big shock to come into a place where the professionalism and intensity was all different - it was a bit to adjust to, but it's been good. "The coaches have been really supportive and when I wasn't getting a game in the first two rounds, they were there for me, telling me what I needed to improve and what I needed to do to get a spot in the team." The Rays head into finals having claimed the minor premiership and that's a credit to a team that is on the same page and a defence that thrives on intercepting opposition forward thrusts and hurting them on the other end. Gahan has been a key cog of that defence and his ability to read the play, intercept and then attack has been impressive to watch. "I've only been a backman for about two
Matthew Gahan attempts to burst away from two Geelong opponents. 182660 years and it's been good this year at the Rays," he said. "We've been really strong down back and to think back to the start of the year to where we are now, there's been a huge improvement. "We're just really strong as a back six and hopefully we can get stronger to help our team even more in the finals." His play has caught the eye of scouts, so much so that earlier this month he received an
AFL State Combine invite. "It was definitely a shock when I found out," he said of the combine invite. "I didn't really expect it to be honest, but it's really exciting knowing that I can show my abilities to clubs and that there are a few clubs interested." With the Rays' incredible home and away season complete, their attention now turns to finals - which kick off on 8 September 8 - and
Pictures: STEWART CHAMBERS Gahan can't wait for his first taste of TAC Cup finals football. "Everyone is in good spirits at the moment coming into finals, so hopefully we can keep it going," he said. "It would be awesome to win it all. The group of boys we have at the moment are the best bunch of blokes, so winning it with them would be really special."
An intriguing WNBL season for Rangers edges closer By Hayley Wildes The Dandenong Rangers will be looking to bounce back in season 2018/19 of the WNBL and that path has been set out with the release of the fixture last week. After finishing the 2017/18 season with a disappointing record of 7-14, the Rangers have built a team that appears well-placed to make plenty of noise this season. The Rangers will tip-off their season on the road; facing the Fire in Townsville on Sunday 14 October, before returning to Dandenong for their home-opener against Sydney Uni on Friday 19 October from 6.30pm. Dandenong has a roster boasting plenty of stars, including the likes of Tessa Lavey, Rachel Jarry, Bec Cole, Sara Blicavs, Carley Mijovic and Tayla Roberts. Also joining them will be guard Amelia Todhunter. Todhunter re-signed with the Rangers last week for what will be her 12th season in
Amelia Todhunter in action for the Rangers last season. 175963 the WNBL and seventh with Dandenong. Last season, Todhunter averaged 5 points, 3.8 rebounds, 1.6 steals and 1.5 assists per game.
Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS
The Rangers' new-found depth will be tested greatly over a gruelling 10-day period to end 2018. Dandenong has three road games - in Canberra (21 December), Melbourne (23
December) and Perth (28 December) - before returning home to take on the Canberra Capitals on 30 December. With just one rest day, which will include the flight back from Perth, before taking facing Canberra it will be vital that every single player stands up and plays their role over that tough period. Highlights of the schedule include two homes games against the cross-town rival Melbourne Boomers. The Rangers will welcome the Boomers to Dandenong Stadium on Saturday 3 November from 3pm and in their final regular season game on Saturday 19 January from 6.30pm. On Sunday 13 January, the Rangers will face the reigning Champions, Townsville Fire at Dandenong Stadium in what is sure to be a cracking contest. With 21 regular season games and a new and improved roster, there is plenty to look forward to for Rangers fans in season 2018/19.
DDCA girls set to shine in a bigger, better competition By Nick Creely The Dandenong District Cricket Association will introduce an inaugural girls competition in 2018/19, with the competition open to all DDCA clubs. As one of the most powerful cricket associations in the south-east, female participation has been high on the agenda, with the new competition set to bring more talent, and an exciting local pathway for young females. The matches -which will be played on Tuesday nights - will be split in two seasons, with two six week blocks. While the finer details are still yet to be finalized, there will be a pre-Christmas season which will kick-off on 13 November, and will be completed on 18 December. The second season will then commence on 22 January 2019, and will be completed on 26 Feburary 30 STAR JOURNAL

2019. This new system will allow clubs to continue recruiting new players during the season and therefore more teams and players will become available for the second season. The DDCA has made the recommendation that if clubs don't have enough players to register a team, they should band with another club to create a combined team and work towards recruiting more players for the second season. The game format will follow the Junior Stage 1 rules - which is similar to the under 11 junior rules - and will be played at venues where several games will be played at the same time. DDCA junior vice president Steven Richards said the new competition is testament to the rise of female cricket in the region.
Monday, 27 August, 2018
"We have been talking about having a girls' competition for a few years now, and we thought this year was as good as any to start," he said. "Female participation in sport is at an alltime high and cricket amongst girls is getting popular. "Myself, the DDCA junior committee and Adrian Jones have worked tirelessly over the past two to three months. Also appointing girls cricket coordinators has helped speed up the process." Richards said that there has been positive feedback to the new competition, and has a great deal of confidence that it will be a raging success, and give opportunities for female cricketers. "At this stage, we are confident of having five or six teams for the first part of the season," he said.
"I'm extremely confident that it will be a success as we have the right people involved to ensure that this works now and in the years to come." The DDCA is looking for clubs within the association to register interest by 27 August, where they will supply lists of girls and their ages to start the developmental process of the competition. The date, however, may be extended to coincide with junior registration at several clubs. As excitement builds for the inaugural season, a junior girls lightning premiership competition will be run for all clubs registered with a team on 6 October, but further details will be released to clubs as they come hand. For further information, contact junior vice president Steven Richards at juniors@ddca. com.au or Rebekah/Tara Hill on juniorgirls@ ddca.com.au dandenong.starcommunity.com.au

Hawks set for finals footy By Hayley Wildes
Mark Seedsman, pictured recently against the Bulls, is set for finals action with his Rowville teammates. 184232 Lakes - having won the minor premiership was thoroughly outclassed by Lyndhurst at Keysborough Reserve in their semi-final clash. The Lightning - who finished a win behind Carrum Patterson Lakes in second position - went goalless in the first term thanks to inaccurate goal kicking, but promptly turned
things around in the second quarter. Despite more poor goal kicking, Lyndhurst dominated proceedings in the second term to hold a slender 11-point lead at the main break, 3.9 (27) to 2.4 (16). Carrum Patterson Lakes struggled to get anything going offensively and managed just three goals in the second half,
Rays win again, finals next on the agenda By Hayley Wildes The Dandenong Stingrays will enter the TAC Cup finals as the team to beat, riding an unbelievable 11-game winning streak after taking care of the Sandringham Dragons in the final round of the home and away season on Saturday. The Rays put the game to bed in the first half as their defence - which has been stifling all season long - once again proved too much for the opposition, holding the Dragons to just one first-half goal. While the defence was impressive, three goals in the opening 10 minutes of the game - via Finlay Bayne, Bailey Williams and captain Campbell Hustwaite - had Sandringham immediately on the back foot. The second quarter was more of the same as Sam Sturt kicked his first major of the day, before Bayne and Williams booted their second goals of the contest.
Having put on three goals in the second term and holding the Dragons to a solitary behind, the Rays held a comprehensive 33-point lead at the main break. The likes of Matthew Cottrell and Matthew Gahan were asserting themselves on the contest, while Campbell Hustwaite was his usual dominant self around the ground. The Dragons came out with real fight in the third quarter and with three minutes remaining, the Stingrays had kicked just two goals for the term. But as good teams do, Dandenong made Sandringham pay for a small lack in concentration as the Rays, through Cottrell and Lachlan McDonnell, slammed on two goals in the final three minutes of the quarter. At three-quarter time, Dandenong’s lead was 46 points. The fourth quarter saw plenty of free-flowing football as the game started to open up. Both teams booted four goals for the term with
Stephen Cumming kicking two, while Sturt and Bayne converted their third majors for the day. Dandenong claimed the win, 14.9 (93) to 6.10 (46), and officially took out the minor premiership. Cottrell was instrumental for the Stingrays, while the trio of Sturt, Bayne (three goals each) and Williams (two goals) were dangerous all day up forward. Gahan played another fine game off halfback and Hustwaite was a monster at stoppages. The Stingrays finish the home and away season with an incredible record of 15-1, having not lost a game since April. It was a truly remarkable season and, with finals ahead, there is plenty to look forward to in September. With the wildcard round taking place this coming weekend, the Stingrays will have the weekend off before finals officially kick off on 8 September.
while Lyndhurst booted six to run out 9.10 (64) to 5.9 (39) winners. Hamish Browning (six goals) was a force up forward, while Jesse Walia dominated around the ground for Lyndhurst. Aaron Guy and Matthew Ryan were best for Carrum Patterson Lakes on a disappointing day for the club.

Rowville got the win over East Ringwood on Saturday, 15.10 (100) to 9.5 (59), and with that claimed fourth spot in Division 1 of the Eastern Football League. Matthew Traynor was impressive for the Hawks, while Riley D’Arcy booted five goals. Rowville will take on the fifth-placed Blackburn in an elimination final on Sunday 2 September at Central Reserve, Glen Waverley in what promises to be an enthralling contest. Noble Park’s impressive late-season form continued with another win - its fourth in the last five games of the season. The Bulls kicked six goals to one in a brutal final term to run out 14.6 (90) to 11.12 (78) winners. Ryan Morrison was best for the Bulls and Ali Zijai kicked four goals. In Division 3 of the Southern Football League, Springvale Districts locked up top spot with a massive win over Hallam, 17.18 (120) to 5.5 (35). An eight-goal to one third term did the damage as Lachlan Morrey (five goals) ran riot for the Demons. The Hawks - who finish the season without a win - were outclassed, but Daniel Gentile battled hard all day. Heatherton’s season came to close with a loss to Black Rock on the road. Heatherton fell behind early and was unable to find its way back into the contest, falling 15.12 (102) to 8.12 (60). Cameron Moon and Reagan Maddaford were best in a disappointing day for the team. Hampton Park wrapped up a second position finish and sent a message to the rest of the league on the eve of finals with a comprehensive win over the third-placed Endeavour Hills. The Redbacks opened up a four-goal advantage at quarter-time and came away with a 14.9 (93) to 5.10 (40) win. Aaron Holden, Taylor Rainey and Luke Nunan were sublime for Hampton Park, while Nathan Strom and Daniel Batson were in fine form the Falcons. In Division 4 action, Carrum Patterson
