MORE TO LOVE The editor’s desk I had the opportunity to go on a tour of Warwick's new Regency Park aged care facility with Churches of Christ Queensland board members for this week's cover story (see pages 4 and 5). If you didn't make it to the recent open day but you have family members who may be looking at aged care options, Regency Park management will happily show you around, and I can assure you it's well worth a look. This $32 million facility is about to start making the first round of 128 new residents welcome, and comfortable they will be - it's like a five-star resort. I was truly impressed by the commitment shown by Churches of Christ - which operates both the aged care and retirement accommodation at Regency Park - not only to ensuring the physical comfort of aged care residents, but also to their overall philosophy. The residents' rooms are not where they will spend their lives - they're simply "bedrooms" in a larger "cottage" environment, where they'll have access to outdoor activity areas and facilities including a gym, cafe, auditorium and even a hair salon. This is a huge addition to Warwick and I think we as a community need to acknowledge the investment Churches of Christ has made here. As well as providing state of the art aged care, it also means new jobs for locals. Truly a 'win-win' all round. ● - Jeremy Sollars

WATER FIGHT - IT’S NOT OVER YET Residents of the village of Karara west of Warwick have not given up their fight to retain their council-supplied water and will take their case to the Queensland Ombudsman. As previously reported, Southern Downs councillors voted in a confidential session at their June general meeting to cut off the water supply to Karara. No reason was stated in the minutes of the meeting but Mayor Tracy Dobie told a public meeting of residents in late July the council was concerned about health impacts on residents drinking the water, despite them only using it for non-consumption purposes such as flushing toilets and watering gardens. The council proposes to give each of Karara's 11 residences a free 5000 gallon water tank and will provide a free once-off fill, and donate Karara's water system to the local Rural Fire Brigade. The current system pumps from Canal Creek to an elevated header tank and the water is gravity-fed to local homes, costing residents around $800 each per year. Karara residents have repeatedly stated that all they wanted the council to do was to install a floating foot valve in Canal Creek to minimise mud and debris in the system.
Resident Kerry Wilson told the Free Times this week due to the drought some residents were using the Canal Creek water for showering and washing clothes, but none were drinking it or using it for kitchen purposes. She said they had told Cr Dobie they are willing to pay for a restricted flow town water supply from Warwick but the mayor said it would be too expensive to set up. She also said residents had offered to buy the existing pumping equipment off the council and run the system themselves but the answer was also a "no". Cr Dobie conceded after the public meeting that she uses water from a dam on her own property for domestic purposes. The council has removed charges for the water from the current round of rates bills but is yet to announce a date for the water to be turned off. It is believed the decision to cut off Karara’s water could be linked to risk management studies the council has performed across all areas of its operations, fearing litigation from residents – in the case Karara, legal action against the council if residents became ill from drinking the non-potable water. ●
TRANSPARENCY IN QUESTION BY JEREMY SOLLARS Questions are being raised about the use of ’briefing sessions’ by Southern Downs councillors to make decisions, rather than at formal monthly meetings. As reported last week the Stanthorpe Sports Association (SSA) recently asked the council to waive a $1730 building application fee it was charged for construction of a new announcer’s box at the council-owned McGlew Street sporting complex. The council’s chief executive officer David Keenan wrote to the SSA saying the council would reduce the fee by half in line with its policy on charging not-for-profit groups and that decision appears to be standing. After the SSA responded to Mr Keenan pointing out that it had spent $30,000 on the announcer’s box to improve a council facility - funds sourced from a gaming grant - it received a second response, this time from Mayor Tracy Dobie, that the 50 per cent is the best the council can offer. But the mayor’s letter points to a wider issue of the transparency of decisionmaking by councillors, with Cr Dobie confirming councillors discussed the SSA’s waiver request at a briefing session and not at a council meeting, where requests for fee reductions or waivers would normally be discussed, voted on and minuted. Councillors’ briefing sessions are closed to the public and no agendas or minutes are published. Briefing sessions are held in the three
weeks leading up to the monthly meeting and are followed by a ‘Professional Development Session’ the week before the monthly meeting. The Queensland Ombudsman raised question marks over similar meetings held by Cairns Regional councillors - called ‘premeeting meetings’ - in a report on conflicts of interest released last October. The Ombudsman found that the lack of minutes of these sessions means “it is not possible to confirm retrospectively whether conflicts of interest are being dealt with appropriately in that forum”. “The evidence is that robust discussions occur from time to time regarding various issues, however, there are never what could be described as disputes in the council chamber,“ the Ombudsman’s report states. “It would appear that this is because the real discussion regarding each item of council business takes place behind closed doors during the pre-meeting meeting. “What happens in the council chamber, for the benefit of the public, could therefore be described as a presentation of the conclusion reached following that discussion. “In my view, this practice places council at significant risk of failing to comply with the local government principle of ‘transparent and effective processes, and decision-making in the public interest’.“ To see the full Queensland Ombudsman report visit www.ombudsman.qld.gov.au and click on the ‘Improve public administration’ and ‘Investigative reports’ tabs. ●

RESTRUCTURE IN THE WINGS? Three new senior executives at the Southern Downs Regional Council will be on salary packages of around $230,000 each, the Free Times has been told. The council is recruiting for the new departmental heads following the departure of two long-time directors earlier this year, as part of what appears to be a significant restructure of the top management level. Former Director of Engineering Services Peter See and former Director of Planning, Environment and Corporate Services Ken Harris both left the council in recent months and the council has been using national recruitment firm McArthur to source replacements. The council changed Mr Harris and Mr See's former job titles and descriptions, and added a third, all-new director's position. The current vacancies are for a Director of Corporate and Community Services, a
Director of Infrastructure Services and a new Director of Sustainable Development. Sources told the Free Times this week the individual salary packages would be worth in the vicinity of $230,000 each, with interviews understood to have been conducted at the Coachman's Inn in Warwick on Monday and Tuesday of this week. All three senior executives, once appointed, will report directly to the council's chief executive officer David Keenan, who in July commenced a new four-year tenure after councillors voted in favour of extending his employment. Job descriptions on McArthur's website appeared to outline a significant executive role restructure, summarised as follows Director of Corporate and Community Services - responsible for finance, IT/GPS, governance, customer service, property management and all commercial and business activities across the council,

COTTAGES
FULL OF CARE A BY JEREMY SOLLARS
s the Free Times went to press this week Regency Park was welcoming the first residents of its new, $32 million aged care facility based on a "cottage" style model of care. Churches of Christ Queensland - which operates the facility and the adjacent Regency Park retirement village - has a strong focus on quality of life for those in aged care. It's all about being as active as possible, rather than being confined to a bed, and the facilities at the new complex are highly conducive to that. There's accommodation for a total of 128 residents, along with a Community Hub, Warwick Aged Care Service, Warwick Home and Community Care - formerly based on King Street and providing inhome care services around Warwick - and Warwick Church of Christ.
The 'cottage model of care' has each 16room 'cottage' set up as a warm, home-like environment that promotes independence. The 'cottages' are named after some of the historic pastoral runs in the region, including Canning Downs and Rosenthal. Churches of Christ Queensland Executive Director of Services Bryan Mason said residents will be encouraged to take part in everyday activities, including meal preparation and personal laundry. "This empowers residents to be independent and complete activities they would have done at home," Bryan said. "Within each cottage, residents have a private bedroom and ensuite bathroom. "The central living, lounge and dining spaces feature plenty of natural light and are furnished to enable residents and family members to select breakfast options and prepare tea and coffee. "Each cottage will also have a number of smaller, quiet areas for relaxation or reading.
"Residents have access to stimulating outdoor environments for enjoyable activities such as gardening or walking to help retain mobility and strength. "Residents across our aged care services have experienced good outcomes through as much supported activity as they are comfortable with. "They have access to a gym, including physio support, and exercise classes. "This also encourages social connections and helps prevent falls, improving positive well-being." Alongside the aged care service, the 'Warwick Campus' has a community centre, hair salon and cafe, which will all open to residents and the local community. There's even a chook run and veggie gardens, but most importantly Churches of Christ is determined to make Regency Park affordable for all. Bryan Mason said 50 per cent of the rooms will be set aside for those on low incomes and with minimal assets.
"This is a state of the art facility which is as good as anything you'd find in Brisbane or other big cities," he said. "But people shouldn't feel that because of that it's out of their reach. "What we will do is sit down with a person and their family and work out a financial arrangement - it may be a combination of an up-front lump sum payment and then an ongoing daily fee. "We will look at everyone's individual circumstances and see what we can come up with for them." Local families with loved ones looking at aged care options still have plenty of time to check out Regency Park - and the staff will happily take you on a tour. Staffing-wise, the new 'Warwick Campus' aged care will eventually employ between 130 and 150 staff - including registered nurses, personal carers and maintenance, laundry and hospitality employees. About 30 staff are already on deck and recruitment is ongoing. â—?

ASBESTOS INVESTIGATION WIDENS BY JEREMY SOLLARS
It is understood asbestos may have been detected at the Allora Waste Facility. A section was cordoned off by Workplace Health and Safety Queensland officers last weekend, with the hi-vis bunting visible in the photo.
Contractors ripping up the oval at Warwick Central State School last Saturday.
WHSQ UPDATE ... In a statement released last week by Workplace Health and Safety Queensland a spokesman said four other locations in addition to Collegians and Warwick Central State School had been found with the same contaminated topsoil material, but did not disclose where. WHSQ had neither confirmed nor denied to the Free Times if asbestos has been found at the Allora Waste Facility by time of printing this week. "Workplace Health and Safety Queensland (WHSQ) is working to determine where the asbestos material has come from, and where it has been supplied to," the WHSQ spokesman said. "In the meantime, if we suspect there is any chance of soil being contaminated with (asbestos) we are taking direct action to prevent its further distribution.
"The supplier involved in this matter has been issued a notice to cease supplying and moving any soil while this matter is being investigated. "The Collegian Junior Rugby League Club leases two fields from the Southern Downs Regional Council and sub-leases one of those to the Warwick Touch Association. "WHSQ was originally notified of asbestos found on these fields on 16 August. "Assessments of the two Collegian fields, as well as one at Warwick Central State School on 17 August, revealed minor fragments of asbestos containing material. "WHSQ found that the pieces of asbestos material were bonded, and could not be crumbled, pulverised or reduced to powder by hand pressure. "It is important to note that asbestos does not pose any significant threat when in a bonded, non-fibrous state, and is not airborne.
"The club and the school have cordoned off the playing fields and are keeping the soil wet, and engaged licensed asbestos specialists to remove the asbestos from the soil, overseen by WHSQ's Asbestos Unit. "WHSQ has commenced an investigation of the supplier of the contaminated soil. "A notice is in force preventing the supplier from distributing anymore of the soil. At this stage, four other locations have been identified as having received the contaminated soil. "Sample analysis at three locations was positive for chrysotile asbestos. Analysis of soil sample taken at all four locations was negative for asbestos. "Property owners have agreed to wet down and/or tarp the soil pending further advice from WHSQ. "It is illegal to supply asbestos containing materials and therefore there is no license applicable to this." ●

As investigations into asbestos found on the Collegians Junior Rugby League playing fields and the Warwick Central State School oval continue, it is understood asbestos may also have been found at the Allora Waste Facility. As reported last week topsoil or dressing provided by a supplier to Collegians and the school was found to be contaminated with asbestos, after a tip-off the Queensland Rugby League - which has been handling comment on behalf of Collegians - says was provided by an as-yet undisclosed "third party". The Southern Downs Regional Council has not commented publicly as to the presence or otherwise of asbestos at the Allora Waste Facility but the Free Times can confirm Workplace Health and Safety Queensland (WHSQ) investigators were onsite there last weekend, removed material for testing and shut down a section of the facility. The council did issue a statement last week saying operations at the Allora Waste Facility were "changing" due to "onsite capacity" but said nothing about asbestos. "Allora Waste Transfer Station is unable to receive the following waste streams until further notice - any timber wastes, metal and steel items and concrete and demolition wastes," the statement said. "Please transport these items to Warwick Waste Facility. "Suitable green mulch is unavailable from this site (Allora). "General domestic waste, drum muster, and green wastes are still accepted at the facility and hours of operations remain the same." Meanwhile asbestos contractors spent the weekend ripping up the oval at Warwick Central State School which will be replaced as a precaution, with the school stating no asbestos in a fibrous state - meaning fibres small enough to be inhaled - had been found on the oval and none had been detected by air monitoring. The Free Times this week asked the QRL if the Collegians playing fields would similarly be ripped up and replaced, with a spokesman saying the club "is currently working with the (Southern Downs Regional) Council to determine what needs to be done to make the field usable again". ●

WORK PROGRESSES ON NEW CENTRE BY JEREMY SOLLARS A new childcare centre in Warwick's south is poised to take in its first youngsters in 2019 - along with recruiting for staff. Gold Coast-based business partners Karl Kraus and Nikki Collins are behind Whispering Gully Childcare, which currently operates two centres on the Coast. The duo are in the process of building Whispering Gully Warwick - on land at the corner of Bracker and Homestead Roads, which will also be the site of a convenience centre planned by local developer Nicola Beggs. The Free Times recently caught up with Karl and Nikki, who are excited to be in the Rose City. Their childcare centre is being built by Adam Nielsen of Rose City Constructions and other contractors, and they're not the only locals who will benefit from the project. Whispering Gully Childcare is expected to open by January and will provide 75 places for children aged from infants to six year olds. It will also generate between 14 to 16 new local jobs, a mix of full-time, part-time and casual. "We'll be chasing an experienced manager and great staff," Nikki Collins said. "We're really excited to be in Warwick - we wanted to look at opening a centre outside the heated-up metro areas, somewhere regional. "We did our research and we could see

"The council has a positive attitude and a vision for the future." Nikki and Karl have been making regular trips to Warwick from the Gold Coast and are pleased with the progress. They'll be actively recruiting for staff in the coming months and aim to complete construction by the end of the year - if not well before - with a planned opening in mid-January.
INTEREST IN NEW CENTRE Nicola Beggs is seeking an 'anchor tenant' for the new convenience centre she's developing adjacent to Whispering Gully Childcare Warwick. She said she'd had some interest from convenience chains who are on a watching brief with the advent of seven-day trading in Warwick, along with interest from other potential new retailers. "I'm looking at possibly five or six tenancies - there's been interest from a bakery, a bottleshop, a cafe, a real estate agency and a chemist," Nicola said.

"I just need to identify an anchor tenant such as a convenience store, or another alternative. "I think when the childcare centre is up and running the interest will increase - right now you're looking at a construction site. "I'm definitely open to all offers at this stage - it's a good location and there's a need for a convenience centre in this part of town." Nicola said construction of car parking for both the childcare and the retail tenancies was proceeding. Interested? Call Nicola Beggs on 0427 910 236. ●

GENEROUS GIFT FOR OUR CONSERVATION A Gladfield family has made a generous gift of three parcels of land totalling 390 hectares to be added to Mount Dumaresq Conservation Park between Warwick and Cunninghams Gap. Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) Deputy Director-General Ben Klaassen thanked the Brown family, represented by Frank and Pam Brown last Thursday 23 August and presented them with a plaque acknowledging the family's land donation. "The land on a spur of the Great Dividing Range will be managed by QPWS for conservation," Mr Klaassen said. "The donated land supports some great stands of white box eucalypts that are habitat for the endangered regent honeyeater. "It also has a substantial tract of semievergreen vine thicket, which is a vegetation type that is considered 'of concern' and is not well represented within the existing protected area estate in south-east Queensland. "The Brown family says this type of ecosystem is known locally as 'Glengallan Scrub'. "Queensland's vine thickets are known to be home to a great variety of snails and insects. Protecting the vine thicket on the donated land will help preserve and maintain unique invertebrate biodiversity. The ecosystem is also home to many species of birds and skinks, and
habitat for two rare plants." Mr Brown, a committed conservationist with over 50 years' membership with the National Parks Association of Queensland, said the property was in very good condition, with only some parts of the property having been lightly grazed. Mr Brown said the donated property had been in the family for three generations, with the original lot coming under the Brown family name in 1908. The family had always tried to keep it in a natural state. The Browns said they offered the land with its interesting ecological composition, wildlife, steep catchment protection and scenic value "as a gift from our family to the people of Australia". ●
RISE AND ‘SHINE’ FOR PREPS BY NATASHA SHEAHAN Warwick West State School has no fewer than three Prep classes with a total of 73 students in 2018. A typical day for the Preps includes ... · Students start the day by singing the 'Good Morning' song followed by telling any stories they would like to share. · Jolly Phonics - sound program, study of sound incorporating physical actions, songs, writing down sounds and use of the smart board. · Reading - Warwick West State School has a large focus on reading - students are placed into groups to suit their varying levels of reading ability with a trained teacher or teaching aide. · Writing - activities to foster engagement using sounds and themes. · Maths - hands-on learning with investigations, counters, blocks and games.
· Science, History or Geography - currently in science the students are studying the needs of plants and animals. They have planted a garden on the schools grounds and are using the designated prep iPads to take photos to monitor and record the stages or the growing plants in the garden. Other weekly activities include Languages Other Than English (LOTE) - 45 minutes a week, the students are currently learning French - as well as Music and PE. Warwick West's School Motto is 'S.H.I.N.E.' - Security, Healthy relationships, Integrity, Nurturing and Excellence. The 2018 Prep Orientation day for Warwick West State School is next Thursday 6 September from 10am to midday. This day is to show parents what West has to offer - but more importantly for the children enrolling in 2019 to meet and get to know the teachers to aid in a smooth transition into Prep. ●

The period during which Australians can opt out of a new government push to have personal medical records accessible online closes on Monday 15 October. The My Health Record System is designed to provide ease of access to patient information by hospitals and other medical providers, but sceptics have raised questions over the potential for privacy violations involving sensitive medical details about individuals. ●
BIG OPENING
Stanthorpe's latest visitor attraction will be officially opened this Saturday 1 September. The 'Big Thermometer' in Rotary Park has been proving a huge hit with both locals and visitors alike since it 'went live' a few weeks ago. Opening celebrations will kick off at 3pm on Saturday with a sausage sizzle, facepainting, balloon-twisting, fairy floss and photo opportunities. The official opening ceremony will take place at 5pm. Steering Committee chair - and Stanthorpe and Granite Belt Chamber of Commerce Vice President - Mick Spiller told the Free Times last month he was blown away by out of towners who had made the trip to Stanthorpe just to see the new attraction for themselves. The overall project cost was $150,000, with $90,000 of that coming from the Southern Downs Regional Council. ●

FESTIVAL TO PAY TRIBUTE TO SLIM The 2018 Bony Mountain Festival will honour Slim Dusty by totally featuring a Slim Dusty theme - dedicating the whole weekend to remembering the man, his life and his legacy. Anne Kirkpatrick, Dianne Lindsay and members of Slim's Travelling Band - Rod Coe and Mike Kerin - are all attending and will perform two shows during the weekend, on the Saturday night from 7pm and on Sunday morning from 11am. There will be two exhibitions, one with donated and on-loan items from private local collectors in the Bony Mountain Gallery, and another mobile exhibition to be very kindly presented by Dudley Monament from the Sunshine Coast which includes an original 1935 touring caravan owned by Slim and including a wonderful collection of memorabilia. Festival organizer Norma O'HaraMurphy is very grateful for the interest and for the wonderful response from so many people who love Slim's music. "It is a unique opportunity to be able to bring you this exhibition and especially Slim's own wonderful family, with two great showcases," Norma said. "The highpoint will be on Saturday 15 September when we will unveil the big sandstone memorial to Slim, beside our big stage here at Bony Mountain. NEWS
COUNCIL TAKES LEYBURN RETIREES TO COURT BY JEREMY SOLLARS The Southern Downs Regional Council is taking a Leyburn couple to court claiming they are building their home on a floodplain, despite an independent tribunal ruling the project is able to proceed. As reported in the Free Times in February of this year, the council rejected an application by Robert and Cheryl Newman to construct a kit home on their 4.5 hectare rural block with frontage to Canal Creek on Tummaville Road, just outside Leyburn. Councillors at their January meeting voted against approval of the Newmans' home leaving their builder aghast, who said the highest predicted flood level for the block is just 500mm, with the floor level of the house - on steel stumps - set at a comfortable 1.5 metres. To make matters worse construction of the house was under way, with the council having issued a plumbing approval for the site in September last year, leading the couple and their builder to believe they were able to proceed. It was unclear at the time what triggered council officers to later require the couple to submit a full-blown 'material change of use' application for their home, on which they had already spent close to $70,000. The Newmans lodged a legal appeal to have the council decision overturned and at a hearing held in Warwick in June the Development Tribunal ruled in their favour, subject to compliance with their submitted plans and the preparation of an "emergency evacuation plan for flood events". Despite the Newmans’ successful appeal the council lodged its own court action against building certifier Homeworthy Inspection Services – as agents for the Newmans - in the Planning and Environment Court of Queensland on 16 August, turning the couple’s win into despair. It's unclear if the council is seeking to have the Newmans' home demolished or moved but it is understood the council is concerned about future liability claims related to flood damage or injury. But the Newmans and their builder - John Biles of TJS Building Group in Toowoomba - are adamant that only a small portion of the block is subject to flooding, and that the home is located on the highest point of ground and would not itself be flooded, even in a major '1 in 100 year' flood scenario. They also maintain that exiting the block during a flood, even if it were necessary would be straightforward and safe. Speaking to the Free Times in February Mr Biles said he could not understand why his lodging of a plumbing application did not flag that the Newman's land is under the 'flood hazard overlay'. He said his firm had built similar houses on flood-affected land in other council areas - including one at Katherine in the Northern Territory that was up on stumps at
A retired Leyburn couple is being taken to court by the council over flooding claims related to their planned home, which they say are incorrect. 2.7 metres and one in the Somerset council region at 1.7 metres, both well above worstcase scenario flood heights. He also pointed out that in recent years the council had approved new homes in Warwick on the Condamine River flood plain also raised well above the flood line on steel stumps, such as two residences at the northern end of East Street - not to mention approving a new Bunnings outlet. "It's as though they (the council) don't have any faith in their own flood warning systems," Mr Biles said at the time. "We know how long it takes for a flood to reach Warwick from Killarney and how long it takes to get to Leyburn. "But in the case of this house you could be sound asleep and wake up in the morning to find a flood has come through, but it's not going to be any more than 500mm. "So you wouldn't even need to evacuate. "The nearest house to the east only had 200mm in the 2011 floods.
"It's not a high flood risk area." The Newmans' town planner who put together the material change of use application was allowed a five-minute address to councillors at the January meeting but it was to no avail. "You could tell they (the councillors) had made up their minds before the meeting," Mr Biles said in February. "The planner circulated the report to the mayor and all the councillors prior to the meeting, but you could tell by their comments they'd put little effort into reading it. "We accept that we shouldn't have started (construction) as quickly as we did but we were acting in good faith and (the Newmans) needed a house built." ●
COUPLE DUMBFOUNDED Cheryl Newman told the Free Times she and husband Robert were stunned the council had chosen to take them to court.
She said they were considering a counteraction to sue the council for the financial and emotional stress they are being put under. "We won the case at the Development Tribunal - why would they then turn around and go with an appeal against that ruling?" she said this week. "We just want to have a nice, peaceful life like everyone else. "We're retired, we don't have millions, we chose this spot because it's affordable - we were on the Sunshine Coast previously - and we wanted our daughters to be able to come and visit us. "We feel there's no problem with floodwaters - a lot of places get flooded, it's life. "The council approved the new Bunnings on the floodplain - I guess money talks. "It's ridiculous, the stress we're going through - it's like the council just wants to have the final word on everything." ●

THE SPIN
WEARY WANDERER’S GRATEFUL STOP Another - and perhaps my final Wanderers Tour done and dusted. Home after 12 days on the road and after having umpired eight consecutive games you cannot begin to imagine what a relief it was to arrive back in Stanthorpe. The touring party survived but only just without our long time Tour leader Lew Cooper and fortunately returned with the same number of players and tourists that we left with. The Wanderers team lost just one of their games on tour and in a first for the tourists played under lights at Roma. It was also the first time Warwick players Mitch Darton and Pat Bourke played under lights and for the pair it was one of the highlights of the tour. In another first Pat Bourke scored his maiden century against Emerald adding to an impressive tour performance. Unfortunately for Bourke - who had to forgo the 2017 tour after coming off second best in a run-in with a cow and a fence - he suffered a nasty hamstring tear during the game in Springsure and missed the final couple of tour games. His Maryvale team mates will be hoping he has a speedy recovery before the start of the local cricket season. They will also be hoping that Mitch Darton repeats the same great form he showed on tour. He added to an impressive tally with a four wicket haul in the final game at Calliope. On the bigger stage, I am sure all rugby league fans are relieved to hear the NRL has finally come to its senses and appointed Graham to a senior position in their ranks. Finally someone with some footballing nous. Annesley who was the NRL chief operating officer from 1998-201 has defected from the Titans where he has been CEO for the past five years. Let's hope as head of elite football operations he will bring some sanity and common sense to the NRL circus. For now, I am to put my very tired feet up this weekend and enjoy watching JT, a true champion of the game in what will be his final appearance for the Cowboys. Meanwhile someone in my household is agitating for the Cowboys to be parachuted into the finals to replace either the Dragons or the Panthers. Giddup. - Casey CONSTABLE AND PARTNER IN CONTROL Scott Constable continued his excellent form last Saturday when he and playing partner Chris Fittock combined to return a winning score of 49 points in the Stanthorpe Golf club's medley 4BBB Stableford competition marking the end of August. Constable recorded five birdies for the round while Fittock chipped in with a birdie and a handful of three pointers in his round. The pair was out with 22 points and back in with an excellent 27 points. Keith Allen and Mark McCosker filled the second spot with a score of 45 points. The pair scored 23p points on the front nine but after rain delay midway through the game the pair lost a little momentum on the homeward journey. Not that anyone was complaining about the interruption - it was rain glorious rain. Thanks to the sponsors Howard and Sons who supplied some great prizes. I hear the runner's up were especially pleased with their trophy. Matt Waterworth collected pin shots at three and 12. No surprise that Scott Constable collected the pin at 17 and the pro-pin at 5/14. Eric McLellan held the pro18 SOUTHERN FREE TIMES

There were winners for the Ladies pins however Margie Locke had best approach at 17. The Birdies nest at eight proved popular. It was shared by Mick O'Brien, Rob Reeves, Scott Constable and Keith Jones. The teams of Tom and Trish Fittock and did Rino Piovesan and Mark Hendry finished with 44 points and collected a ball each in the run down. We launch into September on Saturday and that can only mean the Monthly Medal and putting competition. The event will be sponsored by Aqua Rural Supplies and play commences at 11.00am. As usual there is a time sheet on the board at the clubhouse. TIME TO PREPARE FOR FOURSOME The Stanthorpe Golf club's annual Foursome championship is just around the corner. The popular event has been scheduled for Sunday September 9. The men's foursome will be sponsored by Andersens. Sponsors for the Ladies event are local players Mandy Benussi and Lynn Ludlow. The event will be played over 27 holes and a time sheet has been posted on the notice board at the Stanthorpe Golf club. Time to organise your partner and get those names on thee time sheet. Best advice for this event I'm told is, "If you don't play a good shot - it doesn't matter, someone else has to play the next shot". TANNY TURN OUT FOR TRIPLES There was an excellent turnout at the Tannymorel Bowls club recently for the club's monthly triples sponsored by long

time club supporter Ray Bunch of Warwick. 14 teams faced the starter and there was some excellent bowls played with the green in tip top condition for the event. It was a group of marauders from Warwick Dougy Miller, Ed Welsh and Steve Tyter who skipped away with the event. Flying the flag for the locals were runners up, the ole foxes Gordie Assay, Toucha Tuck and Tadpole Banditt. Bringing up the rear was another local group, Ian Thompson and Trevor and Al Buse. In Round one the eventual winners had a 32-5 win over their opponents and wrapped up the win in the Skips only round when Steve Tyter downed Walshy 18-3 giving the Warwick boys a comprehensive win. ONLY THE DUCKS AND ROOS ON COURSE Sporters went from one weather extreme to another in the space of a week. On Sunday it was only the Ducks and Roos on the course enjoying the much needed rain after play was cancelled. Yet the previous week only Eskimos and the dedicated but perhaps slightly crazy Sporters were out in the elements. Conditions could hardly have been more unpleasant that morning for the earlier than usual tee off time to accommodate play in the Landmark Invitation Day. The freezing conditions did little to deter the hardy or crazy Sporters crew especially winner Dave Gillam who had a good round in testing conditions. Matt Waterworth grabbed the runners up spot with freezing hands and also returned the Best Gross of the day.
The Run-downs went father and son duo Paul and Cody Leotta. Paul Leotta also claimed the Pin Shot at the 12th while Mark Lynam was on target at the 17th. Dave Gillam wrapped up a good day when he and Ray Thorn won the meat trays on offer. After enjoying the sound of the rain in the roof last Sunday, Sporters will be happy to hear that the forecast this Sunday is for a balmy 19 degrees but there may be a bit of wind to contend with. SOUTHGATE ON SONG Bronnie Southgate showed plenty of natural ability this week on the court this week during the Golf Croquet games. In the opening game of the morning Southgate shone scoring 10 hoops in the first game of the morning. She and playing partner Shirley Page had a 13-12 win over Kath Hopgood and Bev Sullivan in a game that developed into a very close finish. Marian Castles played two balls and played the combination of Dianne Wren and Justin Liddy. Despite making seven hoops Castles was defeated 13-7. After the break Justin Liddy and Bev Sullivan played Dianne Wren and scored a 13-7 win. The combined top scorers for the morning were Bev Sullivan and Justin Liddy, who each scored 13 hoops. THREE TIMES A CHARM As a kid playing rugby league in Stanthorpe and Warwick, Mick O'Keefe grew up dreaming of wearing the green and gold jersey for Australia. He has now realised that dream not once, not twice but three times. After taking a break away from the game, last weekend he had the privilege to pull on the Australian jersey for the third time when he was selected as fullback to play for the Australian Police Rugby League team. The game played at Mt Smart Stadium was the curtain raiser to the Warriors and Panthers NRL clash and the Australian side came away 24-16 winners. O'Keefe previously represented Australia in the2017 Universities Rugby League World Cup. Australia won the Championship and O'Keefe was the Top Point Scorer in the tournament. He had previously played in the Australian Universities side in 2015 when Australia won a test series against New Zealand. In the second Test of the series at Greymouth he was named Man of the Match. O'Keefe has been working full time for the Qld Police Service for the past four years and says playing with the Police Rugby League this year has reignited his passion for the game. He has played alongside another Stanthorpe local Mathew Hendry representing the South East Qld Muddies Police Team and from there was selected for the Australian side. Having rediscovered his passion for the game, O'Keefe has been playing for the Brighton Roosters in their 50th year Foundation celebrations at the Jim Lawrie Oval. There is no doubting O'Keefe's talent and there are plenty more opportunities available to him if he chooses to pursue them. In the meantime, three times is definitely a charm when it comes to Australian jerseys and O'Keefe is now preparing along with his Queensland Team mates to play in the annual 9/11 game against the Queensland Firies. freetimes.com.au

Rugby League supporters should be salivating at the prospect of the 2018 TRL grand final this weekend after Minor Premiers Wattles set up a much anticipated grand final clash with arch rivals Valleys after their win over Highfields in a Preliminary Final cliff hanger last Sunday After a week of turmoil and disruption which saw their co-captain Matt Duggan fail in an attempt to overturn a three week suspension for a dangerous throw, it was a gutsy win by the Minor Premiers. It was a controversial decision which could have derailed Wattles Premierships aspirations but under the guidance of Travis Burns Wattles rose to the challenge. Burns stepped into the halfback role and his contribution to the win cannot be understated. He played a hand in two tries and scored a spectacular try in what was undisputedly a man of the match performance. The Wattles forwards deserve much of the praise. Led by Dale Perkins they laid the foundation for the win. Wattles had to play at their best to book their place in the big dance and opened the scoring with a converted penalty. However it was Highfields that had all the early running taking an early 10-2 lead after tries to Denzel Burns and Conor Nolan. Wattles lost star Mitch Konia to a dislocated shoulder after 11 minutes and was a spectator for the remainder of the game. Wattles dug deep and in the space of five minutes Burns set up two tries for Tye Gardener to level the scores at 10 all. Burns added the extras to give Wattles a 12-10 lead. After another successful penalty conversion Wattles snuck ahead 14-10. In the shadows of half time Highfield's Denzel Brown made it a double and levelled the scores. Jared Lee converted right on half time to give Highfields a 16-14 lead at the break. The game anyone's to win or lose in the second half. Burns certainly showed he is a player for the big occasion playing arguably his best game of the season. Five minutes into the second half he dived over for a try and the successful conversion swung the game back in Wattles favour. It was the first of three Wattles tries with Green and Gaulton in quick succession. Not only was Burns kicking in general play creating problems but he certainly brought his kicking boots and his successful conversion rate gave his side a 32-16 lead midway through the second half. Highfields have been the inform club of the finals and they were never going to give up. Jared Lee scored and converted his own try to narrow the margin to 32-22. There was a sense of a grandstand finish as both teams raided the each other's try line only to be turned away by desperate defence. A try to Hargraves broke the deadlock and gave Wattles a 16 point buffer with six minutes left on the clock. Highfields threw everything at their opponents trying to get back into the

Winners are grinners - the Australian Police Team celebrate after defeating their NZ cousins. game and late tries to Ingersole and Loxley narrowed the margin to 38-32 but despite their late charge the siren beat them. Highfields managed to keep Jackson Green, the Webcke Price Medallist quiet in the first half but he stamped some authority with a good individual try in the second half. There was no surprise when Burns was named Hutchies Player of the Match after a dominant performance and although after the game he was full of praise for his forward pack and team mates there was no doubt about the value of his contribution to the win. Wattles 38 (Ty Gardner 2 Travis Burns, Jackson Green, Nathan Gaulton, Jake Hargreaves tries Travis Burns 7 goals) Highfields 32 (Denzel Burns 2, Conor Nolan, Tom Ingersole, Sean Loxley, Jarred lee tries Jarred Lee 4 goals) And so it is on to the main even this weekend when the top TRL protagonists meet in the grand final many were hoping for. If previous clashes are any yardstick, this is sure to be a high class encounter with no quarter given. The game kicks off at 2.00pm at finals headquarters Glenholme Park following the grand finals of the other three grades. Reserve Grade: Gatton v Pittsworth (1.15pm) Under 18: Highfields v South's (11.30am) Second Division: Warwick v Pittsworth (10.00am) TRL GRANDFINAL TRIVIA Since 1919 Valleys have won 35 Premierships
Since 1967 Wattles have won 4 Premierships While sections of the media might be claiming, Eleanor Carey is from Bundaberg her mother, Sandra is loudly and proudly singing the praises of , to use her words her" STANTHORPE, QLD born & bred daughter " after she and two English team mates Megan Hoskin, Cazz Lander rowed from California to Hawaii in a 7.6m ocean rowing boat named Danielle. After a 62 day feat of endurance and survival on the North Pacific Ocean, Eleanor was greeted by family and friends when she and her teammates made land fall in Hawaii. It's not a trip many would have on their bucket list, taking on leaping sharks and big waves in a tiny vessel with no privacy and a bucket toilet as you navigate the 4000klm journey. It was however a world record setting voyage Eleanor was determined to complete. The journey took the trio, who rowed for up to 13 hours a day, 62 days, 18 hours and 36 minutes. The adventurers are now waiting for world records as the first team of three to make the crossing, and the youngest female crew of three to row any ocean in the world to be verified. Eleanor Carey became a member of the crew Pacific Terrific after being inspired by a Netflix documentary about four women who rowed across the Pacific Ocean. With very little rowing experience, Carrey set about finding team members to join her on the challenge and so began her began the epic journey. She says one of the biggest challenges was seasickness. "It weeks before I ate a
proper meal," she said. She feared she might be medically evacuated and there were a few times when that option was very close. Despite her early bouts of seas sickness Ms Carey was determined to complete the challenge and says there were moments of beauty and self-revelation as her health improved. She said, "Here I was in the middle of the ocean and I just felt completely calm, completely in control and just empowered. If I can do this, I can do anything." Well no one can argue with that. Since returning to Bundaberg where she is a teacher, Ms Carey has received The Spirit of Hinkler Award. The Award celebrates exceptional pioneering attitude in innovation and adventure, and is named after Bundaberg's legendary aviation inventor Bert Hinkler. She received the award at a function attended by family, supporters and received video messages from around the world. Eleanor Carrey is an inspiration to us all and although she now lives in Bundaberg the Stanthorpe community should proudly recognise the remarkable achievement of one of their own.
