Overdose threat treatment service, said Benzos and painkillers were widely prescribed. "Having pain or stress or not being able to sleep requires a more complicated response than a pill. "They're widely prescribed by doctors because they are the main medical treatment for common conditions such as anxiety and insomnia and chronic pain. "Doctors are getting more educated and getting more conscious ... I do think we need to change our views on what is the answer to these common problems." Patients also needed to rethink their expectations about getting a quick, prescription fix, he said. "What makes them an issue is they're basi-

cally sedating drugs." For example, chronic pain or anxiety could be addressed by changed lifestyle, diet and activity, physiotherapy and psychology. "Though it's not as immediate as taking a tablet, we know they work. And they don't carry the risks that these tablets will carry." The Penington Institute is calling for the Federal Government to review of the soaring prescription levels for the painkiller, fentanyl, and to substantially increase drug treatment. Mr Ryan noted that drug use was a health issue more than a law issue, due to most overdoses involving pharmaceuticals. "We need more education. "We desperately need more support for families." 12398773-RA37-18
Greater Dandenong has claimed an unwelcome title as one of the fatal overdose hotspots in Melbourne, according to newly-released research. It sparked a warning about the deadly rise of pharmaceutical drugs such as sleeping tablets, anxiety pills and painkillers. In a five year period ending in 2016, 86 people succumbed to a drug-related death in Greater Dandenong, according to research by the Penington Institute. This is up from 74 deaths a decade earlier. "This part of Melbourne is behind only the Port Phillip area when it comes to drug overdose deaths and they are heading in the wrong
direction," Penington Institute chief executive John Ryan said. The biggest killer drugs in the region were opoids - illicit drugs and pharmaceutical painkillers - such as codeine, heroin, oxycodone and fentanyl. On the rise, nationally, however were deaths involving sleeping and anxiety tablets, also known as 'Benzos' or benzodiazepines. In 2012-16, there were 2177 Benzo-related deaths across Australia. Amphetamines including the drug 'ice' rose to being the third most common substance in overdose deaths (1237 in 2012-16), overtaking alcohol. "It seems with more apartments, the more we lose a sense of community. "The closer people live to each other, the more they shut themselves away - they are a bit more fearful, a bit more isolated." Both sites were well smaller than the council's minimum 2500-square-metres for new parkland. However, Cr Matthew Kirwan said parks smaller than this threshold were already being enjoyed in other parts of the municipality. "Residents asked me why would sell land that we already own? "Why would we give away potential open space that we already have? "When land prices rise we won't be able to buy it back. Make sense to me." Cr Sean O'Reilly - who favoured the land sales - said there were existing parks within walking distance of the sites.

Cr Tim Dark said the sell-offs would have gone towards the council's affordable housing fund. "Surely, affordable housing takes priority over surplus land."
Rising above the low times By Cam Lucadou-Wells Once a victim of bullying, Arzum Caglayancay is now making a stand for others. The 31-year-old public servant is a finalist at the 2018 Mrs Australia Globe beauty pageant, making it a platform for her fight for mental-health awareness. The event staged in Melbourne on 15 September focuses on charitable and philanthropic acts by women over 25. Ms Caglayancay's nominated charities are Project Karma and Lifeline - the latter of which helped her through her darkest days. Extensive bullying and depression once drove her to several suicide attempts at high school and university. When she emerged the other side, she dedicated herself to helping others as a public servant.
"Never judge a soul, lend a hand where you can, pick up someone who has fallen, and unify," is her personal motto. "Unity and people power cannot be purchased but felt within your heart and soul, then comes the changes we all thought were never possible." She advocated for a headspace office in Dandenong offering mental health services for young people. Also, she has helped organise forums on mental health with Holt MP Anthony Byrne and Orygen Youth Health. The cause of Project Karma is one that's close to her heart. "Child prostitution and displacement is still a topic of social neglect," she says. "It is a global matter that all humans are aware of. However, the stigma of not wanting to know it exists is still very strong."

Two disused kindergartens could be set to become 'pocket parks' after a stunning reversal by Greater Dandenong Council. At a 27 August meeting, councillors overturned council officers' recommended sell-offs of the Gove Street, Springvale and Fifth Avenue, Dandenong West sites. It was a victory for people-power, with a petition of 42 signatures from a nearby school as well as emails and texts flooding councillors' inboxes after the agenda item was publicised days before. Dandenong West resident Peta Rose said the Fifth Avenue site was required open space as more residents squeezed into higher-density apartments without backyards. It would be a small, quiet park option for families with young children. In contrast to the bustling nearby Hemmings Park with skate facilities or Greaves Reserve that's the other side of a busy highway. "I've got neighbours who have two young children just playing in the driveway." The nearby pre-school and child-care centre, as well as a keen group of elderly walkers, could also utilise the potential 'pocket park'. It would be up to the community - but possible uses include a community garden or a playground, Ms Rose said. Had the site been sold off, it would have been an opportunity lost, she said. "We would have to wait so long for this sort of land to be available for a park. "It's a great outcome for the community." Mark Dalton, of Springvale, said the Gove Street site would provide a park for residents who couldn't access Warner Reserve across the highway. "There's a nice tree in the middle (of the site) - put a couple of chairs and a rubbish bin there... "It doesn't worry me what now goes in there. As long as it's green and somewhere to sit in the sun." Silvia Mastrogiovanni, of the Dandenong Community Association, said public open space was becoming more of a necessity as a common
A man has been awoken by an armed intruder during an aggravated burglary in Springvale South. The 29-year-old victim was sleeping on a living room couch in the Altair Street home when the male burglar has forced open the front door about 2.25am on 28 August. When the intruder opened the living room’s sliding door, the awoken victim asked who it was. The victim noticed a hammer-like implement in the intruder’s hand, Greater Dandenong CIU detectives say. A 44-year-old occupant came out of her bedroom, challenged the burglar and followed him out the front door. He told her to get back inside the house and walked away from the scene. NEWS
It’s a vicious cycle By Cam Lucadou-Wells Greater Dandenong Council has defended its plans to demolish a Noble Park velodrome named after sport legend Maurice Kirby. The council had come under fire from cyclists, Cycling Victoria and Mr Kirby's affronted family - the latter of which had not been consulted on the demolition. Recently, the council made overtures to negotiate with Mr Kirby's daughter Gayle George. It has offered to reinstate a mysteriouslydisappeared sign that recognised the former sport broadcaster and Pedal Club founder at the site. Ms George told Star News that she was disappointed that the sign had been apparently gone for several years. "There's a sign up there at the moment that makes no mention of the Maurice Kirby Velodrome." Under questioning at a 27 August council meeting, city planning director Jody Bosman said there were no registered cycling clubs in Greater Dandenong and "no known demand" for a competitive cycling track. No organised groups used the velodrome in Parkfield Reserve, there was minimal support for the facility and no requests for an upgrade for the facility, he said. If retained, the "sub-standard" velodrome would need to be demolished and re-constructed . Mr Bosman said based on "historical usage", retaining the velodrome would be unlikely to encourage the "greatest level of extra cycling" compared to other infrastructure. There were also "risk factors" due to soccer and cricket being played on fields inside the track. He was asked by Cr Matthew Kirwan how the council would foster cycling as a sport - as stated in its own cycling strategy - without the

Kim Nguyen on the Maurice Kirby Velodrome track. 184380 region's only velodrome. Mr Bosman took that question on notice, as well as questions on the cost of demolition. Springvale cyclist Kim Nguyen who is heading a campaign to save the track, said he doubted claims the entire tarmac track needed replacing. "It's far from a professional standard but no one has complained about its standard." He said the most degraded bumpy parts were present only in a small southern section of the track. A recent resurfacing of a Hawthorn velodrome with fine asphalt by Boroondara Council cost $50,000, he said. The track still suited the needs of training lap cyclists, and families wanting a safe area to teach their children how to ride.

"People ride bikes to be fit and healthy, but don't necessarily want to be involved in a cycling club." The track had suffered from under-promotion, including a lack of way-marking signs to the venue, he said. With no final decision yet made on the track's future, Mr Nguyen said there were community moves to reintroduce a cycling club and to promote the velodrome. Cr Roz Blades said consulted residents had told the council they don't use the track and saw it as an "impediment". She said there was still a "long way to go" to reconcile the council's draft masterplan with the track cyclists. "There's two sides to every discussion and it's up to us to listen to both sides."

Soft-spoken priest Matt Scheffer says the boxing ring is a metaphor for life. "Don't be afraid to get in the ring - and have a go." He is one of a group of 'fighters' hopping in the ring as part of an eight-week Fight Club challenge at UrbanGYM in Hallam. The course culminates in a 'Fight Night' on 26 October - a sparring session and celebration of the participants' achievement. The event also raises money for charity as well as mental health awareness. Mr Scheffer said he took the challenge to get more fit, but also to remind himself that often our biggest battle is our own fears. "Life is like a boxing ring - it doesn't matter how many times you're hit, it's how many times you get back up." At his St James' Anglican Church in Pakenham, he often sees people struggle with mental health issues. Proceeds from the Fight Night will go to local charities as well as to the overseas work of Extending Hands for Cambodia. The Fight Night is on Friday 26 October, 6pm at UrbanGYM, 94 Abbott Road, Hallam.

Commuter reeling from ‘over-defensive’ punch By Cam Lucadou-Wells An “over-defensive” transgender adult has taken offence at another train passenger and punched him hard in the face, a court has heard. The victim and his friends had got aboard a commuter train at Sandown Park railway station and started talking quietly amongst themselves about 10pm on 4 April, police told Dandenong Magistrates’ Court. The 18-year-old accused, who had been sitting nearby, approached the victim, told him he “shouldn’t talk s***” and thumped the window next to him. The victim apologised and said he meant no disrespect. He was then hit in the face with a clenched fist - leaving marks that led magistrate Jack Vandersteen to comment at the hearing that it was obviously a forcible blow. An apologetic accused, of Endeavour Hills,
later told police that it was a “stupid” act, the court heard. Defence lawyer Nick Power said the accused had been subject to continual bullying due to her gender identity issues. She had identified herself as transgender for the past three years, with the support of her parents, Mr Power said. However, she had never had counselling or intervention from doctors. “I think there’s almost a predisposition she has that people are speaking negatively towards her, because that’s been a pattern since her teens.” The “remorseful” accused realised that was no excuse for the assault, Mr Power said. Mr Vandersteen noted her youth, guilty plea and lack of priors. “This was completely unnecessary. As the man said, they meant no disrespect to you.” She was sentenced to a 12-month good behaviour bond.
Oil slick found in waterway An asphalt processing plant in Springvale has been fined over illegally spilling oil into a local waterway. Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) fined Fulton Hogan Industries Pty Ltd $8060 over the spillage into Mile Creek. EPA southern metro manager Marleen Mathias said an oil heater at the site boiled over causing a discharge into a stormwater system leading to the creek. “Sampling by EPA officers confirmed that Mile Creek was impacted by oil and it had come from Fulton Hogan’s Springvale premises,” Ms Mathias said. “Oil affects aquatic life in waterways by re-
ducing oxygen levels. It directly smothers anything living in the waterway and creates a toxic environment in water.” The business responded immediately by reporting the matter to the EPA and installing booms in the creek to prevent further spread of the oil, Ms Mathias said. “The company also engaged a contractor to remove oil from the creek and the stormwater drainage system. “(It) has since taken remedial action by sealing the onsite stormwater drainage pit where the spill entered and are installing containment controls around the oil heater to prevent any future spills of this kind.”
New trial is set against youth crime By Cam Lucadou-Wells New teams of police officers and youth workers are patrolling the South East every night to help break the cycle of offending among young people. The Embedded Youth Outreach Project (EYOP) is a 12-month trial program pairing Youth Support and Advocacy Service workers with Victoria Police officers. It was rolled out in Greater Dandenong, Casey and Cardinia police areas from 29 August. Police and YSAS have stressed that the program is not a substitute for law enforcement. Arrests and remands will still be made. However, the program enables youth workers to connect to young people at "sliding doors" moments, YSAS chief executive Andrew Bruun said. It is a time that the young people can be immediately referred to services to help. Such as counselling, drug and alcohol and employment services. These were the times when they could "really turn their lives around" and choose to become "constructive members of their family and their community", Mr Bruun said. Previously, when police came across young people at night, there were no youth workers
on hand. Youth services and other agencies were closed. So there was a long gap in time between police contact and referral to agencies. Sometimes the young people were referred to the wrong place. Dandenong YSAS manager Warren Eames says having a youth worker "on the ground" and in "real time" allows them to get a connection during a "fateful and critical moment". The young and at-risk were typically "highly disengaged from the community", he said. This could be caused by early departures at school, poor job prospects, family violence or breakdown and traumatised childhoods. Police Minister Lisa Neville said the EYOP would not "in any way undermine" police operations. It was an "additional tool" to reduce the rate of youth offending. Southern-Metro police region's Acting Commander Paul Hollowood said the YSAS workers would play an important role breaking down barriers between police and young people. ""This pilot will also aim to hold young people to account for their actions, where necessary, but also provide a timely and targeted approach to address underlying issues."

LOOKING BACK 100 years ago 5 September 1918 The New Recruiting Campaign Already the local recruiting staff have made elaborate preparations in connection with the big recruiting effort that is to be made throughout the Commonwealth in the "drive" for men for reinforcements.
A special feature is to be introduced by the Government in the form of a voluntary ballot, which is being launched as the last resource, and no stone is being left unturned to make this appeal reach every citizen - not only to secure recruits for the army - but also to stimulate them to greater effort in matters pertaining to the prosecution of the war, and to sire up enthusiasm, and so present a united front to our enemies, and obtain that much sought after and a lasting peace. Captain Bruce MHR and Cr Groves MLA

Some old items which has been stored in the shop's ceiling were a 1924 Table Talk magazine and part of a 1925 daily newspaper. The newspaper showed pictures of Jack Gregory bowling in the 1925 Test matches against England. Another memento of the good old days was an advertisement for the latest in record players. The price ... nine dollars!

On Friday the animated icon received its own welcome home. More than 30 people turned out at 7am on a damp overcast morning to see the famous sign light up the central Dandenong sky, facing Lonsdale Street from atop the Dandenong Market. "The Dany pig will now be part of Dandenong's bright future for many years to come" said Mayor Angela Long.
Cycling club legend There's a larger than life figure recognised by the under-threat Maurice Kirby Velodrome in Parkfield Reserve. On a post on the Save Noble Park Velodrome page on Facebook, the spotlight has turned onto who is Maurice Kirby. Mr Kirby was well known for establishing the popular Pedal Clubs of Victoria in the 1950s, which got 50,000 children across the country on their bikes. He ran a bicycle shop for decades in Noble Park, and was a popular, versatile sports broadcaster on radio station 3XY and Channel 9. He called greyhounds at Sandown Park, 'Golden Gloves Boxing', basketball at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics as well as trots, futsal and wrestling. As the founder of Channel 9-YoorallaSportsmen committee, he raised thousands of dollars for the charity Yooralla.
WHAT’S IN A
NAME Raised by his grandfather and step-grandmother, Mr Kirby's generosity was legendary. He and his wife Eileen supplying lunches and lending bikes for many of the kids at his free Pedal Club events. The club passed on the edicts of bicycle culture such as road rules, bike maintenance as well as organising competitions and social activities. It had a regular spot on TV's Happy Ham-

Bells toll for gates By Cam Lucadou-Wells
“This precinct is growing. There’s more heavy traffic, more workers, more business productivity. “In terms of congestion and moving heavy vehicles, this is one piece of the puzzle.” The next project at Remington Drive had been identified as the most significant road project by local industries, she said. And what’s to come in solving the bottomless pit of road snarl points in the South-East? There’s a commitment for a level crossing at South Gippsland Highway in the next Govern-

Abbotts Road’s traffic-clogging boom gates have been dismantled with a new rail overpass set to open for use on 8 September. Crews removed the gates and signals on 29 August, with further finishing touches to come on the new 410-metre rail bridge. During a 10-day rail shutdown in the area, the new bridge’s track was to be connected to the existing track, overhead lines re-positioned and the redundant ground-level track removed. Buses will replace trains between Cranbourne-Dandenong during the final phase. As well as being a congestion point, the crossing had been a notorious black-spot. Most notably when a truck crashed into and derailed a commuter train, killing a train passenger and injuring six others in November 2012. Roads and Road Safety Minister Luke Donnellan said the level crossing’s removal would cut travel time for about 22,000 vehicles a day in the busy Dandenong South employment precinct. Coupled with funding for an overpass from Remington Drive to Pound Road West, it would significantly ease truck freight movements, he said. “It’s all about making life easier getting goods in and out of the industrial area. “It’s not so much for the local community but more so for the local businesses.” The level crossing removal was one of an “unprecedented” 29 removed by the Government by October. “Each level crossing we remove is another necessary step towards safer, more reliable road and rail journeys.” Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams said the level-crossing had been “hugely problematic” for the industrial community.
ment term, Ms Williams said. Another priority raised by businesses was the eastern extension of Dandenong Bypass. Over coming months after the Abbotts Road project, authorities will observe the altered traffic movements in Dandenong South and identify the area’s clogging points, she said. Mr Donnellan noted the Government’s election pledge of a $750 million duplication of the Cranbourne railway line, with “more to say” on upcoming level-crossing projects in coming weeks. The priority was to increase capacity on Monash Freeway, rather than widening local roads, he said. The second stage of the Monash Freeway upgrade, including extra lanes between Eastlink and Warragul Road, and Clyde and Cardinia roads, would help take trucks off local roads and smaller arterials, he said. The Government also committed to $1.2 billion of road upgrades in Melbourne’s South East, including Pound West Road and Remington Drive, Dandenong South.

Market’s blueprint for strong growth
Three men that police wish to speak to in relation to the attempted aggravated burglary in Noble Park.
By Cam Lucadou-Wells More festivals, more visitors from across Melbourne, a possible night market and better parking - these are the planks of Dandenong Market's upcoming plans. The market has unveiled its next five-year strategic plan to build on its swelling success, on the back of visitor figures topping 5.4 million a year. General manager Jennifer Hibbs said the core of the plan was retaining the market's "family, community vibe" and its alluring cultural diversity. "It's that delicate balance of getting more people through the door and not changing the character of the market. "Over the next five years, we want to position Dandenong Market as an authentic food and retail hub in the South-East. "There's no one quite like us." Its recent success stories include the introduction of Sunday trading, and regular vibrant events such as the Full Moon, Halloween and Diwali festivals. The market - which has just organised its inaugural Curry Festival - plans to further bolster its events calendar, Ms Hibbs said. It will soon launch Dandenong's first Makers Festival in partnership with Southern Migrant and Refugee Centre. The festival's stalls will feature traditional works from locals from all over the world. It may be a stepping stone for the 'makers' to establish long-term stalls at the market, Ms Hibbs said.
Three men near a white Hilux van at the Bloomfield Road house.
Armed men swarm in By Cam Lucadou-Wells
Jennifer Hibbs reveals Dandenong Market's vision for continued success. There are also plans to strongly publicise the stories and wisdom of its diverse 200-plus traders, and emphasise the community roots of the 152-year-old market. "It's the personal contact that you get - you can't replicate that on-line." Under its strategic plan, the market will advocate to its sole shareholder Greater Dande-
nong Council to improve parking, traffic flow and pedestrian access in its surrounds. Other possible upgrades include more seating, play areas, entertainers and parents rooms. The market will also investigate opening at evenings, including a possible night market, to cater for more local shoppers.
Three men armed with a meat cleaver and a gun have tried to force their way into a Noble Park home, according to police. The masked men parked a white Toyota Hiace van in the house's driveway at Bloomfield Road about 3.20am on Sunday, 26 August. At the front door, the trio yelled for the male occupant to come out of the house and unsuccessfully tried to force the door open. The offenders, who were described as Asian appearance, fled in the van from the house. Greater Dandenong CIU detectives have released images of three men who may be able to assist their investigation. Casey Cardinia Libraries to expand service hours
Dev Sharma gets style advice from Jo Blankfield, watched by son Anirudh. 184318
Special day Dev Sharma had an extra special Father's Day thanks to his wife and Dandenong Plaza. Preety Sharma nominated Connor as her husband's favourite store in a Father's Day competition jointly sponsored by the Plaza and the Dandenong Journal. As the winner Dev received $500 worth of Dandenong Plaza gift cards and a two hour styling session with fashion stylist Jo Blankfield worth $300. Ms Blankfield said flowers, checks and windbreakers were all hot in men's fashion this spring. "We are seeing florals of all sizes and styles in men’s shirts and t-shirts and also in a range of colours from brights to black and whites," Ms Blankfield said. "Even the tropical shirt is making comeback! "Tonal dressing is also making an appear-
ance, with layer hues of neutrals and softer pastels such as blues, greys and pinks prominently featured." She said checks were still a "men’s fashion favourite". "Expect to see it not only in shirts, but in pants and outwear too in a range of shades from neutrals to bold reds and blues. "The 80s comeback is still full swing ahead, with windbreakers being key for the spring weather. Practical, lightweight and comfortable, this season's take is a bit more shaped, features more neutral and balanced colours rather than the 8s fluros and comes in both a pullover and jacket style." She said street style was another key trend. "Expect to see the side stripe that has dominated women’s fashion step across to men’s styling for spring. It’s refreshing to see a season where men’s fashion is really coming into its own with exciting updates on past trends."
Casey Cardinia Libraries (CCL) will be extending opening hours on a trial basis beginning Saturday, 1 September 2018. The trial will see all branches open at 9am every weekday and remain open until 9pm on Thursdays. The extended hours will allow the community to access their local library at different times of the day and provide a more consistent service across the whole region. "Casey Cardinia Libraries welcome more than one million visitors every year and with this, things can get a little hectic at times. By opening for longer we will make it easier for the whole community to access our services,' CCL Chief Executive Officer Chris Buckingham said.
"The community have repeatedly told us through surveys and anecdotal feedback that they would like us to be open for longer. "We believe the extra library time will enable parents to visit straight after morning school drop off, give local students another place to study and provide local businesses and job seekers better access to our resources." CCL will provide additional free activities and programming on Thursday evenings to encourage people to use their local library outside normal hours. The trial will run for six months from Saturday, 1 September 2018 until the end of February 2019, before a comprehensive review of community uptake.

The Rays are finals ready By Hayley Wildes DANDENONG STINGRAYS TAC CUP FINALS PREVIEW It's TAC Cup finals time. After what was a dominant home and away season, the Dandenong Stingrays head into finals as the team to beat, boasting a stunningly consistent group of players. The Rays won 15 of their 16 games; three more than the second-placed Gippsland Power, and finished the season with the massive percentage of 210, some 60 per cent more than their nearest rival. Dandenong claimed the minor premiership and will kick-off its 15th consecutive finals campaign this weekend - all in search of what would be an historic maiden TAC Cup premiership for the club. Coach Craig Black has his team flying and it's their willingness to take the game on and work for one another - rarely does a player record huge disposal numbers, rather a total team effort is required - that makes them so great to watch. Having ticked off their initial goal of finishing top four, there are now much bigger objectives on the agenda for the Stingrays. "We wanted to finish top four, which is a goal the players set at the start of the year," Dandenong talent manager Mark Wheeler said. "We know our best football is competitive against any of the teams in the finals, we look forward to the challenge in a week's time in a hope to stay alive for another week." Having not lost a game since April, the pressure is on the Rays to deliver at the business end of the season and this squad has shown all season long that it's not afraid of the big moments. The Rays were challenged by the Geelong Falcons in their second last game of the season, but found another gear when it mattered most, powering away to an 18-point win after two clutch goals from Sam Sturt in the final four minutes of the game. Dandenong's depth has been the difference between it and the rest of the competition - it boasts bonafide stars on every line, combined with a unique mix of players who understand and relish their role within the system. The backline - led by Matthew Gahan, Matthew Cumming, Lachlan Young, Hayden Young and Will Hamill - has stood tall all season. They routinely beat their opponents oneon-one, but also launch many of the Rays' attacking forays with their slick ball movement out of defence. Their defensive system is smothering and the want to help each other out is visible every time they play. In what was a massive pre-finals boost, cocaptain Mitch Riordan returned to action in the final game of the season - his first game with the Rays since 7 April - and he will be one to watch this finals series. He fitted back into the team seamlessly against Sandringham and a big finals campaign will see his already high draft stocks rise even further. His ability to win his own ball and take strong intercept marks will be key to the Rays' September dreams. The midfield engine room runs deep, but is led by the tireless work of co-captain Campbell Hustwaite. Hustwaite is one of the hardest workers in the TAC Cup competition, highlighted by being top five in clearances and tackles. In the Rays' final game of the season against Sandringham, he laid a whopping 15 tackles and was involved in everything. Alongside Hustwaite, there is plenty of class that rolls through the midfield with the likes of Zac Foot, Toby Bedford, Jamie Plumridge, Sam Fletcher, Matthew Cottrell, Jake Frawley and Jai Taylor all spending time in the middle. The Rays' tall stocks are led by Bailey Williams (18 goals) and Riley Bowman (13 goals) - both possible first round draft selections who, along with Bailey Schmidt (13 goals), drift forward when not in the ruck. The trio routinely causes headaches for opposition defences, which struggle to cover three highly-skilled talls on the ground at once. With Williams, Bowman and Schmidt either clunking big marks or bringing the ball 24 STAR JOURNAL

The play of Sam Sturt - a draft bolter who has kicked seven goals in three games since his TAC Cup debut earlier this month - alongside Finlay Bayne (10 goals), Corey Ellison (17 goals) and Lachlan McDonnell (12 goals) has been just as crucial to the Rays' success. The one suspect aspect of Dandenong's game has been its inefficiency in front of goal. Since the beginning of June, the Rays have kicked 116 goals and 134 behinds in their nine

games played. With the entries coming in thick and fast, it hasn't cost them yet, but it is one of very few question marks surrounding Dandenong. The TAC Cup finals are brutal and unforgiving. Despite having finished on top of the ladder, the Rays don't have the luxury of a second chance. One slip up and it can all be over. With history on the line, the Stingrays will kick off their finals campaign on Saturday 8 September at IKON Park.

Hallam claims state title By Hayley Wildes After claiming the Herald Sun Shield in early August, the Hallam Secondary College senior girls football team tasted even more glory last week. With a spot in the School Sports Victoria (SSV) state finals up for grabs, Hallam played two games on 17 August and took care of business to book its place in the big dance on Thursday 30 August. The girls’ first match-up was a quarter final test against Box Hill Secondary College. Box Hill came to play and claimed an early lead, but Hallam was determined to not let the opportunity slip and fought back to lead by four points at half-time. Having nullified Box Hill’s offensive threats, Hallam delivered a game-winning five-goal to zero term. The side dominated the centre clearance battle and its willingness to take the game on and play an attacking brand of football paid dividends. The final quarter was a tight battle, but Hallam was always in control and claimed a strong win, 10.8 (68) to 4.6 (30). It was a game that seemingly unlocked Hallam’s offensive potential and in the second match of the day - a semi final clash against Yea - the side was irresistible. In a devastating first-quarter of football, Hallam kicked 10 goals and kept Yea scoreless. Hallam’s ball movement and teamwork was the difference as the side ran riot up forward and made Yea pay for any defensive mistakes. Hallam continued to pile on the pain and eventually ran out big winners, 18.6 (114) to 2.0 (12). Brooke Struylaart, Emily Browning, Courtney Jones, Lucy Grocock, Shaneece Stratton and Jess Lidsey starred for Hallam over the two games. Hallam quickly turned its attention to the state final; played last Thursday in Craigieburn against Sunbury Secondary College. Heading into the final, Hallam was aiming
Hallam Secondary College’s senior girls football team claimed a state title three-peat last week. to create some history by winning its third SSV state title in a row. It was a final that certainly lived up to the hype. In wet and windy conditions, it was a hard-fought opening half, with both teams kicking two goals. Hallam owned a narrow one-point half-time lead. The third quarter was owned by Hallam,

but the side was unable to make the most of its opportunities. A wayward five behinds for the quarter saw Hallam hold a slender five-point lead at the final break, with Sunbury to kick with the wind in the final term. Despite fighting against the wind, Hallam stood tall - it was a gallant effort that ultimately
landed the side its third state title on the trot. Having held Sunbury scoreless in the final term, Hallam claimed a thrilling 2.8 (20) to 2.3 (15) win. Siaan Timoney was awarded the best on ground medal for a dynamic display, while Shaneece Stratton and Emily Browning were also dominant.
The Doveton Eagles soar into grand final By Hayley Wildes The Doveton Eagles, in their first season back in Division 2 of the Southern Football League, will be playing off in the grand final after a big semi-final win over Highett on Saturday afternoon. A barnstorming first quarter set up the Eagles’ win as they piled on 6.7 (43) to 0.0 (0) to have the game all but over at the first break. Highett simply had no answers for Doveton as former Melbourne Demons high-flyer Russell Robertson (five goals) dominated, while Nick Beer, Nick Battle and Darren Sheen (three goals each) also fired up forward. The Eagles eventually ran out 18.20 (128) to 10.9 (69) winners and will have the chance to make it back-to-back premierships in two weeks’ time. In Division 3, minor premiers Springvale Districts won through to the grand final courtesy of a stirring come-from-behind win over
Hampton Park. The two top teams of the competition put on a show, battling out what was a close encounter all day. The Redbacks held a slender one-goal lead at the final break, but the Demons came roaring home booting five goals to one in the final term to claim a 9.7 (61) to 6.7 (42) win. George Angelopoulos (three goals) was best in a dynamic display for Springvale Districts, while Lance Baptist and Mitch Betson (three goals) were also impressive. Hampton Park was led by Harley Primrose and Jackson Fry. The Redbacks will have another chance to make it to the grand final in this weekend’s preliminary final. In a stunning fall from grace, Carrum Patterson Lakes - the Division 4 minor premier - was booted out of the finals in straight sets after falling to Lyndhurst in week one of the finals, and Cerberus on Saturday. Cerberus came to play from the outset and
after holding Carrum Patterson Lakes to just one goal in the first term, the side went one better in the second and held the top team scoreless. A 32-point half time lead was a valuable one, but it was far from over. Carrum Patterson Lakes fought hard in the third term, slotting five majors, but Cerberus kept pace with four of its own. The final term turned into party time for Cerberus as the side scored five goals to two to book its place in the grand final with a 14.14 (98) to 8.2 (50) win. Jimmy Miller (seven goals) was unstoppable up forward for Cerberus, while Sam Corcoran and Michael Schwarz drove their side forward all day. Carrum Patterson Lakes, in a bitterly disappointing day for the club, was led by Mitchell Swinton and Aaron Guy.

GROW BUSINESS … Casey Cardinia Region
Maria’s passion shines By Rebecca Skilton “Choose a job you love and you will never work a day in your life.“ Those are the wise words that CEO, creative director and lead designer of Fountain Gate’s Artelia Jewellery, Maria Ulas, is living by. But as the now businesswoman and jewellery designer explained, her life wasn’t always so, with a number of “trials and errors” leading to her dream career. “I did biomedical science at university and majored in microbiology and I was actually working at Monash Medical Centre but it was very hard-hitting,” Maria said. “I studied for five years before I realised, ‘oh my god, I’m just going to shrivel up if I stay here ... this isn’t me’.“ Having always considered her drawing and creativity “just a hobby“, Maria never considered her passion as a career path - until she met her husband, Robert. “(Robert) kept saying to me ‘you’re so creative’ and I would say; ‘no, I’m not...I’m supposed to be a doctor or a scientist, I’m not creative’,” Maria said. “He’s a master jeweller and it wasn’t until he went to Italy and brought back some enamel (that I considered it as a job). He literally came home and said; ‘design me a range, just try it. Just give it a go and see what happens’. So I did. “I designed this range and we took it to the Sydney Trade Show and it went absolutely crazy. It was overwhelming; the factory couldn’t keep up with the demand to get these pieces out. “It was that moment where I said, ‘okay, I see what you’re saying, let’s do this’. And the rest is history.” Following her decision for a career change, Maria worked alongside Robert at his jewellery
CEO, creative director and lead designer of Artelia Jewellers, Maria Ulas. 181676 Picture: GARY SISSONS manufacturing business, TWM co, but admitted something was still “lacking“. “I’m a very emotional person - I really go by energy and the meanings behind everything. “A family recipe and a piece of jewellery are really the two things we take with us in life from generation to generation - (that love) was one of those things I felt like I wasn’t getting when I was creating for business to business. So I thought, something’s calling me and I really need to do this,” Maria said.
‘This’ would become Artelia, which opened on 28 May 2017. Alongside her team, Maria offers “the finest diamonds, pearls and precious stones,” and considers the Artelia team to be the wedding and engagement ring specialists. Maria prides herself on the store’s bespoke approach and the fact that all pieces are designed and created in-house by herself and Artelia master jewellers. “(In the beginning) a lot of people would say; ‘have you got competition? How are you
going to do this? How are you going to do this being a mum with kids?’ But I honestly don’t consider this work. When there’s enough of a drive to do something, it’s not work. There’s no other alternative at this point; this is where my heart is. My heart sings when I’m here,” Maria said. “I used (my two kids) younger years to prepare - people are always really surprised, especially family and friends. They’ll be like ‘where did you come from?’ and I say, ‘well this is what I’ve been up to in the last five years’. “But it’s taking every opportunity and not thinking ‘I’m just going to sit here,’ which isn’t in me anyway. I used (the baby and toddler years) to my advantage, and then, when the time was right, I was ready to go.” Eager to keep learning, Maria is also studying gemmology with the Gemmological Association of Australia and dedicates more than three nights a week to her studies. She divides her time between her professional and personal life but does believe the love of her career has a positive influence on both herself and her family. “This is my weakness; the obsession. But I honestly think if you’re happy and your heart is singing, your kids’ hearts will sing with you,” Maria said. “My advice to other women would be to not only live your best life but to bring out the best in yourself. “It’s so much easier to not do anything and sit back and take the back seat whereas we’ve got so much to give. We’re so special and we’re so hardworking, it’s ingrained in us. If there’s a dream, don’t waste time. And if you’ve got young children and you feel like right now I can’t, you can. All it is is mindset. If there’s something they want to do or a business they want to go for or achieve, just go for it.”
