Beards of Hope By Casey Neill
Emily Ward takes great pleasure in removing husband Robbie's beard. teer organisation of professional photographers who gift photoshoots to families who've experienced stillbirths or premature births, or have children with serious and terminal illnesses. "We've got some good memories," Robbie said. Emily is fund-raising for Cuddle Cots, so other parents can have the same opportunity to capture their precious, short time with their baby.
"They're like an electric blanket but they're cold," Robbie said. "They sit underneath the baby's cot. "It allows the parent to keep the baby with them for as long as they want. "It preserves them so you can keep the baby with you." There are only six in the state and each kit costs about $6000. "Only tertiary hospitals have got them," he said.

The Wards spent just over 24 hours with their little boy. "He didn't leave the room. Others aren't lucky enough to have that," Robbie said. A grieving couple is using the pain of losing their baby son to help other bereaved parents. Mount Evelyn's Business Dragon Tattoo Co supported the Ward family's Beards of Hope fund-raiser. Barber Bec Campbell performed cut-throat shaves for Robbie Ward, Shaun Panayi, Chris Reid and Stefan Wassnig on Friday 31 August. They started growing beards on 1 June, just days after Robbie and wife Emily lost their son, Samuel Robert Douglas. Sam was born on 16 May, just over 21 weeks into Emily's pregnancy. He had a chromosomal abnormality called Patau syndrome. Children born with the condition live for only a few days at best. "He lasted with us for 24 minutes, which was very precious," Robbie said. A scan at 17 weeks as part of a medical training program picked up the issue by chance. "From there it snowballed pretty quickly," Robbie said. They had an amniocentesis, which tests amniotic fluid for abnormalities. "That's a more conclusive diagnosis," he said. Robbie said the chance of having a baby with Patau was one in 28,000. "It's no one's fault," he said. "We couldn't do anything to change what happened. "We had a little service for him at Helen's Hill Estate." The Wards have two other sons, aged 2 and 5 years. "He knows he's got another little brother who's not with him," he said of the five-yearold. The hospital alerted them to support services, including Bears of Hope Pregnancy and Infant Loss Support and its Beards of Hope fund-raiser. "I've never grown a beard before," he said. "It was itchy as to start with. "The last three months has opened our eyes to a lot of great organisations. "Red Nose was great. "For three weeks they rang Emily once a week to see how she was going and let her know when counselling sessions were on." They also encountered Heartfelt, a volun-

Covering the Dandenongs in the Yarra Ranges & Cardinia Shires
The editor’s desk Our nation's leadership feels like a running joke that's passed its use-by date. We're now up to six Prime Minister switches in eight years. If you're struggling to name them all - let alone remember them in order - I'm sure you're not alone. (For the record, John Howard lost to Kevin Rudd at the 2007 election. Julia Gillard successfully challenged Rudd for the leadership in 2010. Rudd reclaimed the position in 2013 but lost the election to Tony Abbott later that year. Abbott lost a leadership challenge to Malcolm Turnbull in 2015, and he lost to Scott Morrison last month.) Like the state-level political sniping I wrote about back in July, this in-fighting and power-grabbing is causing voters to tune out. The round-the-clock coverage on our television screens isn't helping. A new titbit of gossip becomes an hours-long discussion in a bid to find a new angle and keep the story ticking along. Reporters appear to be grasping at straws, desperate for a fresh take while they wait for some genuine news to emerge. Politicians are at pains to stress their "full support" for whoever's at the helm, before bringing out the knife days later. How can voters believe anything they say? Politicians at all levels are being tarnished, as Yarra Ranges Councillor Tony Stevenson pointed out at last week's council meeting. Our representatives in Canberra need to get on with the job of actually representing their constituents, and not their own aspirations and allegiances. - Casey Neill

LETTERS Trashing a symbol I have read about the intended festooning of Puffing Billy with 10,000 poppies and the celebration as it steams into Emerald at 11am on 11 November to mark the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I. Remembrance Day has always been significant to me, more so than Anzac Day, because it commemorates the many thousands who died needlessly. It has in my time always been a solemn occasion with the single symbolic red poppy placed on the lapel or in a button hole. The decorating of Puffing Billy with 10,000 poppies turns this into a festival event which detracts from the traditional theme of remembrance. It trashes the symbol of remembrance and becomes a publicity stunt for a commercial tourist operator. I'm most disappointed. Those souls buried in France gain no solace. Their mothers and fathers and brothers and
sisters suffered the loss of their loved ones and have all passed on themselves. Just who is it that benefits from this circus act? I would prefer to see the anniversary respected in the quiet solemnity of tradition. Do we have to turn every last thing into entertainment? Even our war-dead? C. Williams, Gembrook.
Violence over vaccines Parents who decline to inject their children with vaccines have held a number of rallies in Flagstaff Gardens to protest against the laws that discriminate against their children by depriving them of early learning and preventing them from enrolling in day care. After one of these rallies a group marched down Elizabeth Street holding banners that made it obvious that they are not fans of mandatory vaccination. Three times during this march, the marchers were attacked and assaulted by members of the
public. One attack involved a man riding his bicycle into the crowd and injuring a woman; another involved a man punching a 10-year-old girl in the head, and the other involved a man grabbing a poster from a woman and knocking her over. We presume that the attack on the 10-yearold girl was prompted by the man's belief that the girl had not been injected with all 39 vaccines on the pre-school schedule, and consequently was brewing dangerous diseases. The irony of this is that the attacker has himself not been injected with 39 vaccines, because there were not 39 vaccines on the schedule when he was a child. So according to his rationale, he is as much of a threat to the public as the girl is. The parents of the girl considered laying charges against her attacker because they know that the street is covered by CCTV, and they know that the police do not behave in a bigoted manner towards people who do not believe in the religion of vaccination. However, they decided not to proceed with
laying charges because of the bullying that the girl would be likely to face if the matter became publicised. The politicians who in their ignorance voted in favour of the No Jab No Play law have created a social climate in which a man feels justified in punching a girl in the head, and the parents feel too frightened to seek justice. One politician who voted in favour of No Jab No Play did not know that a vaccine for hepatitis B vaccine exists, let alone that it is made of genetically engineered yeast and is injected into babies on the day of birth. Another such politician was surprised to learn that MMR is not the only vaccine on the childhood schedule. Ignorant politicians feel they have the right to do away with known medical contraindications, to deprive children of early learning, and to make people give up their jobs and go on the dole because they can't access day care. Keeping an eye out By Effie Caloutas Mount Evelyn Neighbourhood Watch notched up 15 years of keeping an eye on the community. About 20 people, including members and police, celebrated the anniversary at the Mount Evelyn RSL on Monday 13 August. Yarra Ranges Mayor Len Cox presented certificates of appreciation to members who had given 10 years and 15 years or more of exceptional service. Mount Evelyn Neighbourhood Watch chairman Geoff Welsh said it was an excellent day for all. The group works with local police to create a safer and more secure community. Volunteer walkers distribute quarterly newsletters with information on home and personal safety and crime statistics to 4200 homes in Mount Evelyn. "I love being associated with Neighbourhood Watch because Mount Evelyn is a very robust community itself," Mr Welsh said. "Being with Neighbourhood Watch is also great because they provide residents with various community activities." 12398635-RA37-18

By Casey Neill Rotarians and Yarra Valley farmers have now sent 120 hay bales to drought-affected farmers in East Gippsland. The Mail reported on 21 August that the Rotary Club of Lilydale was sending 78 bales of hay to Bairnsdale plus $6000 in grain and fuel vouchers. President Ron Haines said that with help from the Rotary Club of Healesville and Yarra Valley farmers, that number had grown to 120 bales. "The Rotary Club of Lilydale has also donated a further $6000 for grain and fuel vouchers, with several transport companies donating their trucks for transportation of the hay - this has been a huge saving." The Rotary Club of Bairnsdale is co-ordinating the donations, which have reached farmers in Orbost, Buchan, Marlo, Cabbage Tree and Orbost. Mr Haines received a report from Bairnsdale Rotary secretary Gillian Reeve that the donation had been warmly received. "As Gillian stated, the extent of the drought cannot be underestimated as some farmers have now run out of feed and they now see some of the cows walking away from their calves due to lack of feed," he said. "Farmers are dealing with no feed, cattle starving, drought conditions, and the mental health issues that all go along with this." Call Mr Haines on 0412 252 344 to support the relief effort. "Every dollar we receive goes directly to the farmers in East Gippsland," he said.
By Effie Caloutas Mount Evelyn pastry chef Samantha Butler has been selected to compete for the World Trophy of Pastry, Ice Cream and Chocolate. The 23-year-old will take part in the Australian selections finale from Monday 10 to Wednesday 12 September at the food industry's largest trade show, Fine Food Australia. The three-day competition will see some of Australia's best pastry chefs travel to Melbourne to battle it out for one of the top spots. The competition is separated into three categories and Samantha is competing in the pastille and gelato discipline, where her creations will be plated up to a panel of judges, including Jessica Pediment, Luigi Stivalette, Adriano Zumbo and Barbara Castiglione. "I have done a lot of practice," Ms Butler said. The winner of each category will travel to Italy next year to represent Australia at the World Trophy of Pastry, Gelato and Chocolate in Milan. "I haven't done anything like this," she said. "Hopefully, being young, my ideas will come across and they will like it." While at TAFE she was a finalist for the Fonterra Proud to be a Chef competition, for which she cooked a seasonal dessert showcasing pepperberry and macadamia as natives. "I was captain of the winning team for the state finals for the Victorian TAFE cook-off," she said. "I was a finalist for the Thierry Marxs apprentice competition. "I was awarded second prize for a cake in the Lilydale Show themed cake competition." Now a qualified Chef, Ms Butler said one of her greatest achievements was being a finalist for the Appetite for Excellence competition this year. "It was a really good experience where we

Keeping your pets safe At Animal Aid we know that the best way to keep your pets happy, healthy and safe is to ensure they are secured in your property. We regularly encounter members of the community who believe that cats who aren't able to roam freely outdoors aren't content and don't live fulfilled lives. This is simply untrue. Many indoor cats enjoy longer, healthier, stress-free lives when compared to their outdoor cat counterparts. It must also be noted that many local councils require your cat to be confined to your property at all times or during the evening and night. Outdoor cats can have territory disputes
can all be easily avoided by keeping your cat safely contained on your property. Young cats and kittens generally adapt very well to an indoor lifestyle. Some adult cats may initially be uncomfortable with the change but by providing an enriching environment that allows your cat to play and explore, you will give your cat the best chance of a happy, healthy and safe life. Depending on your property, cat proofing your fence could be a great option to give your cat outside access. There are a number of changes you can make to your fences that will prevent your cat fleeing, but be sure to trim overhanging trees and shrubs and remove objects from the fence line that could be used as escape routes.
If altering your fence isn't an option for you, an 'attached enclosure' could make for an ideal solution. This enclosure would give your cat access to its favourite spots whilst retaining the ability to retreat inside via a window or cat door, to escape the weather or any potential threats. This can be constructed from a light frame covered by netting or purchased ready-made. Do ensure your cat is microchipped and registered with your details up to date - if by chance your cat does escape the Animal Aid team will be able to quickly get in contact and get your precious puss home. Call the Animal Aid Cattery team on 8756 1300 with any questions.

Knitting for kids By Casey Neill Knitters filled the Silvan Hall with hand-made toys and clothing bound for war-ravaged Syria. Aussies Knitting for War-Affected Kids members from around Australia had been sending their finished woollen pieces to a coordinator in Belgrave South. A small team converged on the hall last Wednesday 29 August to sort through the garments and toys, and package them for children in need. "Last year we shipped over 700 hand knits," Marg Willis from Ferny Creek said. "This year we expect to nearly double that number." The Australian Syrian Association Victorian branch will transport and distribute the items. "Many of our knitters are regular prize winners at shows around the country," Ms Willis said. "You're always looking for somewhere for it to go, to do some good. "Syrian winters are brutal and these children are usually living in tents. "Generally their only source of warmth is kerosene heaters so it is important to use natural fibres that will not melt if they come into contact with a flame." Liz Irving made the trip over from Adelaide to prepare the shipment. The project started with a message to an online knitting group. She was heading to Kurdistan for work and had room in her suitcase. "People are generous and caring and feel that they want to express care for kids in other parts of the world who have suffered so greatly," Ms Irving said. "This is a tangible way that they can do that. "We are a group that's been going for about 15 months."
Gold for the hills at Wushu The peaceful surrounds of the Dandenongs provide a perfect backdrop for practicing the ancient arts of tai chi and qigong. Students from Chi Generation, which runs classes in Upwey, Belgrave and Tecoma and weekend retreats in Warburton, were among the winners at the 20th Wushu Tai Chi and Qigong Festival held at Monash University in August. With local and interstate competitors from 15 schools, ranging in ages from 8 to 84 years old, the festival aimed to develop tai chi and qigong, the martial and healing arts across Australia. "It is a really big challenge to a lot of people to get up on a stage and compete but it gives a big boost to their confidence and self-esteem," Su Rule from Chi Generation said. Her school entered students in group and individual events and came home with three gold and one silver medal for their performances. These skills are usually practiced in quiet settings, so Ms Rule said the festival's noisy atmosphere was a strong test of the entrants' ability to maintain focus and concentration.
Twins Kai and Madi, 6, with brother Riley, 10, from Silvan Primary School. Last year they prepared the shipment from a member's Belgrave South home. "In the 10 months since then we have just snowballed," she said. "We needed more space. "We wanted to get together as a group to sort it, and to put it on display." They invited community groups, including Silvan Primary School, to take a look at their work and hear their story. "These kids have suffered terribly," Ms Irving said. "They deserve our very best efforts now." Visit www.akwak.org to get involved.

Emerald Secondary jumps for joy The Emerald Secondary College sport aerobics squad flew to Queensland to compete in the National Championships on Thursday 9 August. The Federation of International Sports Aerobics and fitness competition attracts athletes from all over the country and despite a tough year, the Emerald Secondary solo team placed eighth in their division and won the National School Spirit title. The school’s solo athlete also competed against a number of state champions to become the National Solo Champion. Coach and principal Jodie Doble said she was extremely proud of the girls and explained the hard work the team had put in in the leadup to the event. “Sports aerobics involves competitors performing continuous, complex and high intensity movement patterns to music,” she said. “There’s high level competitive skills involved...they have to do straddle jumps, angel jumps, tuck jumps, wolf jumps."
IN BRIEF
An elected Liberal Nationals Government will contribute $600,000 towards Stage 2 of the redevelopment of Monbulk Football Netball Club. Stage 2 of the upgrade will consist of fitting out the existing pavilion and community hub, constructing a new car park and asphalting the perimeter, relocating the playground and upgrading the skate park. "Monbulk Football Netball Club is an integral feature of the community," to Liberal Candidate for Monbulk, John Schurink said. "These upgrades will provide the players, supporters and volunteers a safe environment to be able to play and work in." "If I'm elected as Member for Monbulk, I will continue to keep working hard and keep delivering for the community."

Parks Victoria is encouraging people to visit gardens in the Dandenong Ranges this spring. Parks Victoria area chief ranger Craig Albiston said visitors came from far and wide to see the floral displays in the hills. Parks Victoria manages seven gardens in the region, including the Dandenong Ranges Botanic Garden filled with rhododendrons and azaleas that bloom until November. Other gardens include the George Tindale Memorial Garden, Pirianda Garden, Alfred Nicholas Memorial Garden, William Ricketts Sanctuary, RJ Hamer Arboretum and Mount Dandenong Arboretum. By Casey Neill Yarra Ranges Council's Meals on Wheels provides so much more than food. The program helps recipients to stay healthy through nutrition-guaranteed meals and provides priceless social contact for the isolated. Mayor Len Cox and Councillor Tony Stevenson met Meals on Wheels volunteers the council's Lilydale depot on National Meals on Wheels Day, Wednesday 29 August. They joined them on the road for their deliveries. Rosemary and John Haysom from Mooroolbark learn a lot about the lives and families of those they deliver to. "I think the important part is the contact," John said. "A lot of them are on their own. "They don't see anyone else." Rosemary got involved when she retired in 2003, and she and John both hit the road each Wednesday. "It's how we tell what day of the week it is!" John laughed. David Gibson from Mooroolbark retired at 63 and started volunteering with Meals on Wheels to qualify for Newstart Allowance. "I had friends who'd been involved with Meals on Wheels in Knox," he said. That was six years ago. "At 65 I didn't even bother stopping," he said. David enjoys meeting people. "I know two or three people that I'm the only person they see," he said. "But the biggest issue with our meals service is getting people to know about it and understand what our service is all about," she said. "They are so many meal services out there but they don't cater for dietary requirements." Ms Larner said people aged 70-plus years needed three times the protein they did when they were younger. She said not getting enough protein led to muscle-loss and can be a factor in dementia. "So many elderly people are malnourished," she said. She said this could lead to falls and hospital admissions. "If people are healthy and active, it's priceless," she said. Prospective Meals on Wheels recipients must register with My Aged Care for assessment.
Reduce your power bills Energy expert Tim Forcey shared a tip with the Dandenong Ranges Renewable Energy Association for coping in a cold snap. Pump up the heat and save, was his advice. “As reported by the University of Melbourne and others, heating with a reverse-cycle air conditioner can be far cheaper than heating with gas,” he said. “A reverse-cycle air-conditioner is a heat pump that is able to collect free heat from the air outside your home. He said the leadership changes from both sides of politics over the past 10 years “doesn’t reflect well on this nation”. “It does diminish the way people see the value of elected officials such as ourselves,” he said. “We’ve got a very special set of people here. “The councillors I have the honour of serving with have a completely different attitude when it comes to their community.”
Asked and answered Lillydale Lake, Shire of Lillydale, Lilydale the suburb ... ever wondered about the difference in spelling? A poster on a local Facebook noticeboard did, and other members were able to offer up an explanation. The Mail checked it out and found the same answer. The suburb was originally named after Melba Highway resident Lilly de Castella, and the second ‘L’ fell away some years later. Why the lake and shire held onto it - that’s still unclear.

Olivia sings again By Michael Doran Upwey South Primary's Olivia Hibbins is preparing for her fifth consecutive year of performing in the annual Victorian State Schools Spectacular. The Year 6 student will step onto the Hisense Arena stage in a cast of 3000 young performers assembled from more than 200 Victorian schools. This year Olivia will be singing in the select 44-member performing arts unit choir, having emerged through a selection process that started with 350 aspirants. She started performing in these shows in Year 2 and told the Mail that what she enjoyed most was "hearing all the harmonies come together on stage, as well as making lots of new friends who have the same passion as me". Talking about how she has progressed over the years, she said: "I started in the mass choir which had 1500 people, and that was very different to the choir I am in this year. "We have 24 songs to sing and have been rehearsing every Saturday for three hours since February." Olivia added that the rehearsals were a lot of fun but heaps of hard work, and she would miss it when she moved to senior school next year. With 31 students in the production, teacher Penelope Lang said Upwey South Primary and its community strongly valued its association with the arts. She said there were "many learning benefits that come with stimulating the brain through the arts". "Working through the production process develops qualities like resilience, patience, cooperation and the value of hard work," she said. This year's production is titled With the Beat and there will be two performances on

The 1st Ferny Creek Scouts received a cheque from the Dandenong Ranges RSL to help them join the Australian Jamboree next year. The jamboree is a 10-day adventure to be held in South Australia in January. The scouts received the cheque in July during an evening at the RSL, and also learnt about what the sub-branch does for the community. Dandenong Ranges RSL president Bob Richards also shared with them his personal story, as the former captain of HMAS Cerberus, and the story of his grandfather's service in World War I. Mr Richards said the RSL was grateful to have the opportunity to return the support the scout group had provided the RSL over the years. "When we heard of the difficulties faced by one of their troop we knew we had to help out where we could," he said. "The annual scout jamboree is a fantastic opportunity for the local kids to attend and further develop the values they share with the RSL of citizenship, community support and respect." Dandenong Ranges RSL vice-president Keith Baker said that as a committee, they supported the whole community. "One of the kids in the scouts group's dad recently passed away," he said. "We made sure we covered all of his costs for the jamboree, so he could enjoy his time at the event." Mr Baker said the scouts took a real interest in Mr Richards' story and the RSL during the evening.

LOOK GOOD FEEL GREAT
Most foot and leg concerns can be addressed relatively easily and effectively with appropriate treatment.
Foot, knee or leg pain? Feet and legs are vital for mobility and balance and are the basis of most daily activities, so its no wonder most people suffer foot, knee or leg pain at some point in their lives. The experts at Foot and Leg Pain Clinics recently shed light on common foot and leg concerns, naming the most common concerns as knee pain, injuries and arthritis, heel, shin and forefoot pain as well as ankle and achilles concerns. "Many conditions are misdiagnosed and incorrectly treated, so it's important to find an experienced musculoskeletal or sports podiatrist to assist," the experts at Foot and Leg
Pain Clinics said. "Bad foot posture can continually pull your body out of alignment, which can contribute to postural aches/pains and undue stress on joints and tissues." Early symptoms for diabetes, arthritis, nerve and circulatory problems often show themselves initially in the feet. "Traditional treatments such as cortisone, anti-inflammatory medications and joint arthroscopies are now outdated for conditions such as foot and leg pain and arthritis, and have been found to delay healing and cause

further tissue damage in many cases," the Foot and Leg Pain Clinic experts said "We now have effective, natural medical alternatives and treatments for such conditions. Regenerative therapies such as Prolotherapy and PRP (platelet rich plasma) are helping many to heal injuries and assist degeneration." Experts warn that foot and leg problems left untreated usually do get worse, however, most foot and leg concerns can be addressed relatively easily and effectively with appropriate treatment. "By combining regenerative therapies with
a sound knowledge of musculoskeletal medicine, biomechanics, foot mobilisation techniques and load management strategies to assist stresses through joints and tissues, we can aid or eradicate pain, increase mobility, repair injury, heal and regenerate soft tissues without the use of medications," the experts at Foot and Leg Pain Clinics said. For assistance with foot or leg pain, Foot and Leg Pain Clinics have convenient clinic locations across Victoria including Boronia. Mention this article for $50 off initial consultations. ENTERTAINMENT
Country bands get behind SES funds By Kath Gannaway The Upwey Country Music Club returns to Healesville on Sunday, 16 September, for the Annual Healesville SES Fundraiser Show. The show has been a great crowd-pleaser for almost a decade, and raised valuable funds for the Healesville State Emergency Service. The UCMC house band, Up Country Band, will lead a program of artists including The Reflections, Pott Luck, The James Gang, Harmonics, Grandsons Of The Pioneers, Leanne Le Frantz and Movin' On for a packed afternoon of country music. Band member Graham Chasemore said the event is a favourite with the UCMC band and with other country music performers. "We go to the RSL in Healesville every year with continuous music from 12.30pm to 5pm which includes classic country, some bluegrass and some folk; it really depends on the artists who come along on the day," Graham said. As the event has cemented itself in the local country music circuit, the audience has grown in popularity with Yarra Ranges country music enthusiasts as well as drawing keen fans from the suburbs. Graham said the club enjoys the opportunity to help local organisations such as the SES doing shows on a regular basis for other emergency services, at nursing homes and at other charity fundraisers. The Upwey Country Music Club meets on

Entry to the Annual SES Fundraiser Show is $5 with the opportunity to help raise even
more dollars for the SES with lots of raffles during the afternoon. The RSL bistro will be open for meals. Phone 5962 5017 to book.
Kids helping other kids By Alice Rennison Kids will have the opportunity to run alongside Thomas the Tank Engine in the annual Kids Fun Run with Thomas. The Rotary Club of Emerald and District organises the event, which is open to children aged from three to 12 years. They can run courses from 150 metres to 1200 metres on 25 November. Kids Fun Run with Thomas chair John Henderson said the run was about kids helping kids. He said children understood other children might be less fortunate. "It's encouraging children to become good citizens and to give back to the community," he said. "Registrations and donations have been open for a week now. "One girl has already donated nearly $400 already." This year the run is raising money for the Monash Children's Cancer Centre, which provides a range of services to treat childhood and adolescent blood diseases and cancer. "We contacted 10 primary schools in the region and they voted for the centre," he said. "The kids fun run raises money for different charities, nearly every year." It has raised more than $575,000 since it started in 2002. "In our first year we had 250 children participating," Mr Henderson said. "In 2017 we had 600 children participate and raised $43,000." Mr Henderson said the event was also lots of fun.
Disco queen’s on her way
12398482-EPJ37-18
By Alice Rennison The queen of disco is coming to Upwey. Singer and performer Marcia Hines will perform at the Burrinja Cultural Centre in Upwey at 8pm on Friday 21 September. Ms Hines' career spans five decades, including releasing 22 albums and selling 3.6 million copies. She has performed in theatre productions including Hair, Jesus Christ Superstar, Big River, Are You Lonesome Tonight? and Jerry's Girls. She was also on the television shows Countdown and Australian Idol. Burrinja Cultural Centre executive director Ross Farnell said the performance would bring together Ms Hines' whole career. "She'll have back-up singers and dancers," he said. "We're hoping for disco balls to the extreme. "It's going to be a lot of fun and a lot of noise."
Crazy Rich Asians is an energetic and uplifting film about love's resilience in a daunting new culture. Chinese-American economics professor Rachel Chu (Constance Wu) travels with her boyfriend Nick Young (Henry Golding) to Singapore to meet Nick's family, who - unbeknownst to her - are the wealthiest family in Singapore. Rachel must prove herself to Nick's affluent social circle, especially to Nick's sceptical mother Eleanor (Michelle Yeoh). Wu and Golding have warm, natural chemistry together, and Yeoh delivers a performance of remarkable dignity and nuance. While Eleanor is ostensibly the film's primary antagonist, as she disapproves of Rachel |
Tuesday, 4 September, 2018
Mr Farnell said he would be hoping for the event to sell out. "Marcia has had a long career and appeals to everyone of all ages," he said. Visit www.burrinja.org.au for more information.

Marcia Hines.
for being a foreign commoner, she doesn't reject her out of malice. Eleanor is a staunch traditionalist who believes that Rachel isn't strong enough to satisfy Nick or be part of such a powerful family. Featuring vibrant cinematography, opulent art direction and soaring music, Crazy Rich Asians is a dazzling celebration of Asian culture. The film has plenty of funny moments derived from culture shock and bombastic side characters, but never veers into stereotypes. Rachel and Nick are deeply devoted to each other, but the film maintains strong personal tension through the obstacles pushing against their love: family disapproval, harassment and the heavy expectations Nick must face as the heir to his family empire. Crazy Rich Asians is an endearing and deeply-moving romantic drama. - Seth Lukas Hynes mailcommunity.com.au

Raptors’ remarkable run By Judy Kennedy The Monbulk Rangers Raptors finished the season just one point behind the Under-12 Wallabies Boys East winners Mooroolbark Soccer Club in an exciting climax to their first year in professional Football Federation Victoria (FFV) competition. The Raptors, coached by Rob de Wit, scored 74 goals to Mooroolbark's 71 but lost one game to end on 41 points, just one behind Mooroolbark's 42. De Wit, who also plays in the successful Monbulk Rangers Knights team in the Victorian Churches Football Association (VCFA), said he was proud of his team's efforts. "We had half a dozen boys who had played together as under-11s in the VCFA competition last year but the rest of the team were new and they came together really well," he said. "It's a fantastic result in our first season, to come second by a point in a division with 13 teams."
In the FFV Boys East Under-13B division, Monbulk Rangers Lions also lost only one game for the season but the competition was so tight that they came in third, behind the winners Ringwood City FC and second-placed Manningham United. On Sunday 2 September the Lions held Ringwood to a 1-1 draw, the only team to do so in the season. "You know the competition is tight when there's only five points covering the top three teams," coach Tony Briggs said. "Our only loss for the season was to Manningham United 0-1 in the final two minutes of our game, and that's testament to the Lions' strength and determination." In the Saturday VCFA competition, Monbulk's under-17 Salamanders clinched the championship by defeating Maroondah 4-1. Monbulk's under-13 Tigers and under-12 Wizards both won cups in the C-division, while the under-10 Wasps took home the cup for B-division.
Rob de Wit’s Monbulk Rangers Raptors finished their first FFV season just one point behind competition winners, Mooroolbark SC.
