A SPRING DAY IN MOUNT EVELYN

EXPLORE MOUNT EVELYN IN A DAY BY DEREK SCHLENNSTEDT NESTLED between the flowing creeks of the Yarra Valley and the towering peaks of Mount Dandenong, the quiet village of Mount Evelyn is a winning combination of coffee, crafts and cafes, which make for a memorable day out. 9AM A big day out requires a big breakfast and with so much to see and do, the village centre is the best place to find one. The many cafes dotted around Mount Evelyn deliver a beautiful and serene place to enjoy a delicious meal, so be sure to start your day by walking into one of the many terraced kitchens that are offered in Mount Evelyn. With creamy eggs on toast and, of course, sublime smashed avocado a regular cafe delicacy, each cafe has a range of delicious goodies and will leave you content and raring to go. 10AM

NOON After brisk walk it’s time to head back to Mount Evelyn to reinvigorate those muscles and treat the tastebuds. Indulge and sample fare from one of the many eateries in the township which include an award-winning bakery in the main street, and a unique food concept restaurant and gourmet cake cafe with an open fire. A little down the way in Wandin, wine lovers can taste local wines and enjoy a fine dining experience in a boutique-inspired winery overlooking the Yarra Valley. 2PM No visit to Mount Evelyn would be complete without a trip to the Treasure Corner Opportunity Shop. The op-shop offers a fantastic assortment of trinkets and treasures. Each item has a vivid history and story to tell and 100 per cent of the profits go directly back to the local community.

4PM Only a five minute drive from leafy Mount Evelyn is the Montrose imaginative community-built playground which will keep both little and big kids entertained for hours. Located within Montrose Recreation Reserve which also contains sports ovals, sports pavilion, open space, bushland areas, tennis courts and netball courts, it's well worth the five minute drive. A unique benefit of the playground is that it’s next door to the Hahndorf’s Fine Chocolates and you can easily walk to the chocolate shop via a sensory nature garden on the edge of the playground, making it feel like a little adventure. 6PM The golden hour for photographers is also a golden, opportune hour for bird-watchers. Mount Evelyn is home to more than 60 varieties of birds including the endangered powerful owl. The vast array of birds and wildlife can all be viewed best at sunset when many nocturnal animals come out to explore. Take a walk around the trails at the Olinda Creek Mount Evelyn Recreation Reserve and be delighted to see many wildlife species such as wallabies, echidnas, platypus and owls.

CRYSTAL BROOK

Most are accessible to prams and wheelchairs and offer a wide variety of flora and fauna.

WANDIN-SILVAN FIELD DAYS

THIS FARM FESTIVAL'S A FIELD DAY BY DEREK SCHLENNSTEDT THE Yarra Valley: the premier tourist destination in Victoria is known for its fresh produce, delicious wine and breathtaking natural attractions. In addition, the town’s year-round events draw hundreds of visitors each year. One of those unique and memorable events is the Wandin-Silvan Field Days, which is held over two days in October and features more than 200 presenters. The event has exhibitors showcasing the latest in horticultural, agricultural and farming equipment and industry practices and the popular agricultural show includes open stalls which feature livestock. Visitors can explore the exhibition’s other stores and stalls showcasing art and crafts, clothing, fragrance products, confectionery and toys - all perfect for a family outing. A true traditional Australian show, the Wandin-Silvan Field Days originated from Elmore in 1964 and today the event is held over several locations in the Yarra Valley with thousands of visitors each year.

The event’s wide arena includes an impressive range of agricultural displays and exhibits which is why many farmers and agricultural employees consider this the pre-eminent farming festival. Visitors can interact with the farmers and learn about the machinery and agricultural practices used today and the event also offers some informative and educational seminars that provide useful information about the new technologies ranging from farm machinery, light industrial equipment, motor vehicles and motor bikes, irrigation equipment and water tanks, to information on the latest pest and weed control, fertilisers and chemicals. The 2018 Wandin Silvan Field Days will be held on Friday 12 and Saturday 13 October at the Wandin East Recreation Reserve. The entrance fee for 2018 (which benefits local CFA Brigades) is $15 per person and children aged under 15 years enter free of charge. EFTPOS facilities are available at the entry gate and an on-site mobile ATM is also available.

SPRING IN THE DANDENONG RANGES

The new 100km Melbourne trail will commence at the beautiful Emerald Lake, with walkers spending their first 35km surrounded by the lush temperate rainforest of the Dandenong Ranges.

OXFAM TRAIL HEADS FOR THE HILLS ONE of Australia’s largest fundraising walks is heading for the hills.

“We want to give Melbourne something fresh.

The 100 kilometre Oxfam Trailwalker event in March next year will start in the heart of the Dandenong Ranges.

“The 2019 trail presents an exciting new challenge for our passionate returnees as well as for those considering taking up this fantastic team fundraising challenge - and the opportunity to help Oxfam’s work tackling poverty in communities around the world - for the first time.”

The new trail will start at Emerald Lake and make its way over the Dandenongs and through some of Melbourne’s leafy eastern suburbs including Mount Evelyn, Olinda and Lilydale. From there, it will travel down the line all the way to Fairfield.

Ms Wemyss said the new trail would give participants fantastic views of the city as they climbed over Mount Dandenong.

The trail change is the first in almost a decade, with the previous trail starting from Wheelers Hill and ending in Wesburn.

She added that the new trail could also have beneficial tourism impacts on the towns it passed through.

“After almost 10 years on the same trail between Wheelers Hill and Wesburn, Oxfam Trailwalker listened to feedback from some of our most dedicated Trailwalkers and decided it was time to improve and update the trail,“ Oxfam Trailwalker spokesperson Anna Wemyss said.

Hundreds of teams take part in the event ever year and with a new trail, the 2019 event is expected to be no different. The event will be held over 36 hours from 29 to 30 March and registrations are available at trailwalker.oxfam.org.au.

It’s a cathartic and exhilarating experience that not only moves the body but also the soul. Instead of travelling in a car removed from the outside world, you are a part of the environment around you, taking in each item of information and scenery as if seen through a new perspective. There is nowhere better to enjoy this new perspective than the renowned Dandenong Ranges and Yarra Valley. On most weekends motorcycle riders flock to the Yarra Ranges and often stop at the many beautiful townships, such as Olinda. They travel for the variety of roads the region has to offer two-wheel enthusiasts. From tight and twisty apexes to long and gentle sweepers, the Yarra Ranges has it all.

Awaiting those two-wheel enthusiasts and only one hour form Melbourne is Mount Dandenong ... and yes you did read that right - an entire mountain. Mount Dandenong offers riders a plethora of roads that branch off the popular and relaxing Mount Dandenong Tourist Road. A 30-kilometre trip, Mount Dandenong Tourist Road winds its way up the Dandenong Ranges and gives riders brief panoramic views of the eastern suburbs. Riders can stop at the Kalorama lookout for a view of the Warburton Ranges and Silvan Reservoir, or head off along Ridge Road to the Mount Dandenong Observatory for stunning views of the city. With plenty of quaint little towns dotted through the ranges, riders can stop for a coffee and relax in the shade of Sherbrooke Forest. Its natural beauty, panoramic views and flowing corners are the perfect entree for riders seeking an easy and relaxing ride, or can be used as the perfect starting point for riders who want to continue on to greener pastures in the Yarra Valley.

SPRING IN THE DANDENONG RANGES

WALK THIS WAY FOR A TASTE OF BY DEREK SCHLENNSTEDT WITH well over 200 kilometres of walking trails in the Dandenongs, who needs to go further afield for a great day out? No matter what level of walk visitors are seeking - a short, brisk, or challenging one - there are plenty of incredible options in the Yarra Ranges. Surrounded by native bushlands and forests, it’s simply a must for any local or visitor to venture outdoors and discover a favourite trail. Whether it’s the challenge of scaling the 1000 Steps, or wandering throughout Birdsland Reserve, there is inspiration aplenty.

1. BIRDSLAND RESERVE A great little option for those seeking some time away from the ’rat race’. Birdsland is a 75ha bushland reserve which opened to the public in 1984. The area comprises many walking, riding and mountain biking trails, including the Dargon Trail which connects trail-users to Lysterfield Lake Park. More than 130 different native birds have been identified in the reserve, including the wedge-tailed eagle and powerful owl.

The best way to see the the Dandenong Ranges is on foot.

A VISIT to Grants on Sherbrooke is always a pleasure. Located in the Dandenong Ranges this well known refreshment icon has catered to tourists and locals since the 1950s. Owner/operators, Cheryl and Geoff Campbell completed refurbishments late in 2005 doubling the size of the original building. Grants specialise in Australian seasonal cooking and guests can dine in air conditioned comfort indoors or by the cosy log fire in winter. In summer, guests can dine alfresco among the natural bush setting.

Browse in the Gift Shop, which has one of the largest ranges of quality Australiana Gifts and Souvenirs east of Melbourne.

Our services include: • New Menu • Licensed Café • Functions - from 15 to 120 guests • Devonshire Tea

2. 1000 STEPS This hugely popular exercise option gives participants a little taste of the exhaustion endured by Australian soldiers who followed the Kokoda Trail, in Papua New Guinea, in World War II. Through the many tree ferns and manna gum, walkers work their way through some incredible scenery to the top of the hill. The steps themselves are steep and are not recommended for those with medical conditions. For those who can, make sure to observe the plaques that honour those who fought and died during the Kokoda campaign.

The floor to ceiling windows in the restaurant allow patrons to view the natural Australian bushland with rosellas, kookaburras, lyrebirds, cockatoos, wallabies and even the occasional echidna wandering around. Grants is the only place in Victoria where visitors are permitted to hand feed the native birds. 9am to 5pm in feeding area only.

SPRING RACING

YARRA VALLEY RACING'S A TREAT BY CASEY NEILL TAKE a pinch of glam, a handful of rural character, a plate of farm-fresh produce and a bottle of local wine - that's Yarra Valley racing. Cox Plate Day is the kick-off party for this year's spring racing carnival at Yarra Glen. The Saturday 27 October race day will be the first thoroughbred meet of the season and promises a great atmosphere filled with live music, ample hospitality and options to suit every guest. From a track-side work party to a day out with the kids, Yarra Valley Racing Club can cater for it all. Early bid admission for Cox Plate Day is $15, adult tickets are $20, and children under-18 attend free of charge. "It's really quite affordable for a family," Yarra Valley Racing Club marketing manager Tanya Sprague said. "It's a viable option for a whole day's worth of entertainment. "You can even bring your own food if you want to." But the course offers dining and hospitality packages ranging from chefprepared picnic hampers to a catered buffet lunch. Picnic hampers feed 10 people and include gourmet cold meat and salads, rolls, antipasto and cheeses. In the Yarraview Dining Room, chefs hand-pick the Yarra Valley's freshest produce to create a seasonal three-course menu. In-between are beverage packages and cheese platters, which guests can devour from their own fold-up chair or picnic rug, under a trackside umbrella from $40 per person, on a home straight picnic table or in a mini marquee. The VIP lounge offers a touch of luxury, with gourmet canapes, boutique wines, a dedicated mixologist and a DJ. There's also a zone especially for kids, with inflatables and more. The Moonee Valley Cox Plate will be on the big screen so punters won't miss a thing from the Melbourne meet. Fashions in the Yarra Valley are a bit more relaxed than the Flemington or Caulfield catwalk. It's about style and stunning outfits, not stressing over designer labels or this season's latest couture. As well as the catwalk, there'll be a touch-up booth, an exclusive cocktail and champagne bar, and pop-up photo studio. Melbourne Cup Day on Tuesday 6 November and Oaks Day on Thursday 8 November wrap up the spring racing calendar, but major meets on 1 December, 21 December and 17 March will follow. Free car parking is available at the course and a courtesy bus will run from Lilydale Railway Station. Gates open 11am and the last race runs between 4.30pm and 5.30pm. Visit yarravalleyracing.com.au or call 9730 1332 for more information or bookings. 14 SPRING 2018

SPRING IN THE YARRA VALLEY

KEEP THE VALLEY FRUIT FLY-FREE KEEP the Yarra Valley fruit fly free over this spring period! As many come to the region from interstate, visitors are being asked to help keep the Queensland fruit fly away. Northern Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland are all areas in which the fruit fly is prevalent. So visitors from these areas who enjoy fruit are reminded not to bring any to the Yarra Valley. Fruit damaged with fruit fly can be hard to identify. But Queensland fruit fly regional co-ordinator, Bronwyn Koll, said action could be taken. “If you suspect you have fruit fly-infested fruit, seal it in a double bag and treat it using the freezer, microwave or sun for an extended time, and place it in the normal household rubbish bin. Do not compost infested fruit,” she said. Ms Koll said it was important for people to maintain their backyard while they were away, too. “Please invite a neighbour or a friend to harvest your ripening fruit in your home garden while you’re away on holiday,” she said.

“Removing all ripening fruit reduces the risk of fruit fly establishing in the Yarra Valley.” The Queensland fruit fly is a devastating horticultural pest. Presently, the Yarra Valley does not have fruit fly. But fruit fly populations can increase very quickly, with the damage extending into neighbouring properties, or even across the region. The Yarra Valley is a valuable fruit fly-free horticultural production area and is home to great edible gardens - both worth protecting! For more information, visit www.fruitflyfreeyv.com.au or www.agriculture. vic.gov.au and search Queensland fruit fly. Everyone can help to keep the Yarra Valley fruit fly-free.

SPRING IN THE YARRA VALLEY

DRIVE ALONG THE ACHERON WAY

Walk among the tree tops. The highlights are quite simply the journey itself. Drivers should take their time, stop only where it’s safe, and enjoy being surrounded by tall trees and magnificent tree ferns. They should also keep their eyes out for wildlife - both for the adrenalin rush of spotting a local, and because they don’t always look left, right and left again! Travellers will come soon enough to the Marysville Road where they can extend their road trip by turning right and heading into Marysville, or left to take them through Narbethong and down the Black Spur to Healesville. The Narbethong Forest Reserve is a beautiful shady parkland with excellent facilities including barbeques and a playground. Road-trippers can stretch their legs on the 800 metre loop nature trail or one of the other walking tracks. The historic Black Spur Inn was a welcome sight for many a traveller making their way to the goldfields of Woods Point back (way back) in the day, and it’s still a cosy and welcoming place to enjoy a meal or a drinks break. Further along, Dom Dom Saddle, Fernshaw and Graceburn Weir offer opportunities for some more bush walking before arriving in Healesville, renowned for its great cafe culture, boutique shops, wineries and distilleries. Spring is a magnificent time to travel through the forests of Yarra Ranges, still damp and cool with mountain streams bursting with the snow melt from the surrounding peaks. Enjoy the ‘Sunday drive’ any day of the week!

12375854-EPJ15-18

BY KATH GANNAWAY ROADTRIP!! It’s in the Aussie psyche to get out in the car or on the bike and explore. It used to be somewhat condescendingly called the family “Sunday drive” but admit it - we love it. And, if you can do it as a round trip (who wants to see the same thing twice in one day?) so much the better. That’s why you should check out the Acheron Way. It’s one of the little-known ‘short cuts’ between Narbethong and Warburton (or, obviously vice-versa) but it’s a seriously beautiful and undervalued tourist experience for anyone who loves a good drive with plenty of options for sight-seeing, happy-snapping, picnicking or otherwise refuelling along the way. This brings to mind one potential drawback for the traveller. They need to have a plentiful supply of petrol before they head out, either from Healesville or Warburton - just to be sure! Back on track. Starting from Warburton - where they may have been tempted to drop into one of the excellent cafes to jump-start their trip - drivers should make their way along Donna Buang Road to the Rainforest Gallery. A 40-metre long observation platform - one of only three of its type in Australia - takes visitors into the rainforest canopy 15 metres about the ground. Down below, a 350 metre-long elevated walkway takes visitors deep into the Rainforest Gallery where 65 metre-tall old-growth mountain ash trees and ancient myrtle beech trees, many 300 to 400 years old, share gallery space with ferns, mosses and other plants that make up the verdant, damp rainforest along the Cement Creek. Continuing along the Acheron Way (route C507) the 38 kilometre stretch is a mix of sealed and unsealed road winding its way through the Great Dividing Range through State Forest. At its highest elevation, Acheron Way is 832 metres with some steep inclines. Although it’s narrow and twisty, it’s generally a good gravel road, but not recommended for caravans.

Sculptural and functional - the Maroondah Highway Overpass in Lilydale. Pictures Kath Gannaway

TALE OF A TRAIL WITH A PAST IN RAIL BY KATH GANNAWAY Years ago, many of the passengers on the Lilydale-bound train, stayed on. They might have broken their journey for 'light refreshments' at the charming refreshment rooms* before they chuffed along to Mt Evelyn and the other stations along the way to Warburton. These days, Lilydale is the end of the line for train travellers, but not for walkers and cyclists who can still make their way along the 40 kilometre long former railway line with Lilydale station as a starting point. The trail begins at the rear of the railway station car park from where you enter the recreation reserve and cross the Olinda Creek bridge to start your journey. Head out past the old turntable and continue on to the 'new' Maroondah Highway Overpass. The overpass replaced the original railway bridge over Maroondah Highway and for anyone who loves a bit of industrial engineering, it's an early highlight of the trip. As you head into Mt Evelyn you'll come across another unusual bit of engineering quirkiness, the corrugated iron tunnel under Hereford road, reminiscent of the old nissan hut design.

Following the Trail it's worth taking time as you travel through vineyards, beautiful mountain scenery, farmlands and forests to imagine the rhythmic clackity-clack of the train wheels on the rails and the passengers peering through the windows as the changing landscapes flashed by. It's all about leisure these days, and the pace on foot, on wheels or on the hoof, is much more conducive to appreciating the landmarks and taking in the Valley's fresh air. The trail crosses a number of restored bridges and meanders past remnants of the former station platforms, including the original 1882 railway station at Yarra Junction which now houses the Upper Yarra Museum. The Rail Trail's gentle gradients make it ideal for all levels of fitness including families. Visit www.yarraranges.vic.gov.au for information on the various stages of the Trail which range from 2.4 to 6.8 kilometres, and for details of facilities such as car parking, toilets, water stations, bike racks, shelters, horse yards and picnic areas and nearby townships. *The Victorian Railways Institute opens the now historic Refreshment Rooms on Fridays for 'refreshments'. If you're starting or finishing your Rail Trail experience between 3pm and 9pm, pop in and enjoy a bit of rail history.

You can find purposebuilt shelters at various points along the trail.

Tunnel vision can be a plus.

GARDENS

GARDEN HOPPING A SURE BET BY KATH GANNAWAY Warburton Garden Club is taking a punt on good weather and big crowds for their Open Garden Weekend having this year moved the event to the Cup Day weekend in November. Visitors looking for an escape from the spring racing frenzy will be on a sure bet with club members opening six very different gardens from Launching Place through to Warburton East and featuring a range of additional activities. Shirley and Kari Lahtinen’s garden in Launching Place, for instance, has book sales over the weekend. Others have plant sales, sausage sizzles and other refreshments. But always, the highlight of this popular annual weekend garden extravaganza is the gardens and the gardeners. Shirley and Kari’s garden is a great example of courage in the face of a garden that just doesn’t work for the gardeners. They have converted what was a garden of conifers and diosmas into a mixed garden that showcases seasonal interest and pleases their own gardening style. An extensive display of exotic shrubs share the space with a vegetable garden, fruit trees and a developing native garden. This year’s gardens range from small to large and offer a beautiful opportunity to stroll among some of the Upper Yarra Valley’s most interesting private gardens. Shirley is typical of the gardeners who work for months to ensure their gardens are at their very best, but somehow still manage a friendly welcome to visitors and jump at the opportunity to share their knowledge and joy of gardening. “Yes, you enjoy it, but you do end up totally exhausted after two days of pretty solidly walking around your garden,” Shirley says of the experience. “But, it’s really just lovely when you see people enjoying your garden.

The gardens will be open on Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 November from 10am with last entry at 4.30pm. Entry passes are available at all the gardens except the Yarra Junction garden and are $20 for a six-garden pass, $5 single garden visit. Children under 16 are free entry. Gardens are at 75 Heath Crescent, East Warburton; 9 View Street, 24 & 20A Warburton Road and 19 Marlino Avenue in Warburton, 12 Valley View Court, Yarra Junction and 17 Cairncroft Avenue, Launching Place. For more information visit www.upperyarravalleygardenclub.com . 12393713-DJ36-18

“When someone looks at something you’ve done and takes the time to tell you “that’s a good idea; I could use it”, it’s nice to give people ideas and see that they appreciate what you’ve done.”

FLOWERS, FOOD AND FRIENDS BY DEREK SCHLENNSTEDT MELBOURNE’S lesser-known private gardens often don’t get the credit they deserve. They often linger in the background of people’s houses, unseen and undeterred. But the Dandenong Ranges Secret Gardens event brings them to the fore. These secret gardens are often brimming with personality and beauty, and it is only for the Dandenong Ranges Secret Gardens event that one can venture into these private spaces, owned and maintained by devoted gardeners whose work is a true labour of love. That love is on show for all to see. Garden lovers can fill their senses with unforgettable sights, gourmet foods and the scent of spring, while botanical tour guides Eddie Wasbutzki, Margi Petzke and the garden owners themselves share their expertise and the stories behind the gardens. New additions to the tour include the Philip Johnson garden, with a focus on sustainable habitats that help to heal the earth and create spaces to completely unwind; Bickleigh Vale Village, the original 10-hectare village, built and landscaped by Edna Walling; and The Underground House, an earth-sheltered home nestled into a gently-sloped garden connected to a system of ponds. Previous favourites from last year's program will return - The Keatings, Joost Bakker and Mernda Heights. With so many destinations to choose from, each day offers a different program. This year’s spring program also extends further than ever before, with a selection of four different dining experiences to complement a visitor's day. They can indulge in a gourmet picnic lunch at the Ferny Creek Horticultural Society, taking in their expansive lawns, banks of colourful azalea, rhododendrons, pacific coast iris and views of the nearby hills and the Great Dividing Range. Visitors could also treat themselves to the fine dining experience at Coonara Springs and delight in contemporary Australian cuisine.

SHOPPING

THE INCIDENTAL TOURIST ATTRACTION BY KATH GANNAWAY THERE are op shops...and there are OPPORTUNITY shops! The opportunity to pick up a bargain, to discover some unique pieces of jewellery, grab a magazine to read during travels, or just to browse among the racks and the shelves. For some tourists they’re the accidental discovery as they make their way between galleries, wineries, festivals and other events and attractions. For die-hard op-shoppers however, they are ‘the destination’. Almost every town or village in the Dandenong Ranges and Yarra Valley has one or more opportunity shops supporting their local communities, schools, churches, hospitals and other worthy causes. They plough hundreds of thousands of dollars back into local economies and provide an affordable alternative for anyone finding it hard to make ends meet...but they are also a growing attraction in their own right. An op-shop bargain is no longer hidden away...it’s to be celebrated as a great buy, a rare find or a chance to reuse or recycle. No two are the same and visitors just never know what they'll discover, but a stand-out in the Yarra Ranges has to be The Mustard Tree Op-Shop and Cafe in Lilydale.

Book yourself a rare find!

Tucked away at the end of an industrial laneway off John Street and run by the Lilydale Baptist Church, this gem of a shop is a little hidden away - but no shrinking violet! It’s about retro, about creativity, about turning ordinary bits and pieces into magical decor - and about all sorts of sustainability. With a cafe and a philosophy of giving to the community in a myriad of ways, The Mustard Tree is a must-visit for anyone planning an op-shop tour of the Yarra Ranges. One of the unexpected consequences of popping into a local op-shop is that you can almost guarantee the staff - mostly local volunteers - will be able to let you in on some other ‘best of’ attractions - the best walk, the best cafe, the best lookout...the best of everything! Going retro is easy.

Located at the foothills of the Dandenong Ranges and Gateway to the Yarra Valley. 40 accommodation spa suites Tranquil views Club 4 Kids Indoor and Outdoor Play Equipment Entertainment lounge Swimming pool Tennis court Cocktail lounge and function rooms available for all occasions Walking tracks Close proximity to the Yarra Valley Wineries and scenic attractions of the Dandenong Ranges. Q&A WITH TONY INDOMENICO Situated on the slopes of the Yarra Valley at Coldstream, Many Hands Winery is a family-owned and operated boutique vineyard. Planted 36 years ago, the well-established vines, hand-harvesting and ageing in French oak barriques are just a few of the things that make Many Hands' wines unique. Tourist News did a Q and A with owner and wine-maker Tony Indomenico. How long have you been in the industry? As young as five, it became an adventure; the whole family in the FB Holden driving up the line to Nyah West, and the journey began. In a nutshell from grapes to wine, wood fired ovens for pizzas and a feast of fresh food. And what prompted you to start Many Hands? Great wines begin in the vineyard. Much like a cook and his wood-fired oven and the quest to create great wines from this great vineyard (established in 1982) and beautiful landscape and soil. You’re a boutique winery - where do boutique wineries fit into the Yarra Valley experience? It’s a craft, understanding the art and science. Wine-making is a process of passion from grapes and working with flavours, aromas and barrel-ageing. It’s a pathway from soil to the grapes to the bottle. What is your most memorable meal? This is serious stuff. A traditional wood oven will bring out the great taste of fresh food - pizzas, calzones, vegetables, meats and fresh in-house Italian sausages. It’s what’s in season in the valley that makes it the most memorable meal. What makes for a memorable Yarra Valley dining experience? lovely wood-fired calzone with fresh Yarra Valley produce and a lovely salad with a glass of wine. What qualities do you look for in hospitality staff? They must be friendly, have a real passion for the food we serve and it’s important to have good knowledge of our wines. How important is it to a winery restaurant to have a good barista these days? Fresh 100 per cent Arabica beans, grounded fresh, real coffee and a choice of style depending on what mood you’re in.

From soil to the bottle, Tony's passion is abundant at Many Hands. 183130 Picture: Rob Carew. What is the biggest challenge in establishing a new winery? Grapes from the vineyard, ageing after fermentation and Mother Nature, that’s the biggest challenge. The rest is the beginning of a great adventure. What do you enjoy most about your job? Passion, love and the freedom of the valley. You’ve invited friends to join you for a picnic lunch at one of our many beautiful parks in the Yarra Ranges. What Yarra Valley wine would you take along? I’d take a chardonnay and a cabernet blend...and a smile, just to love it and enjoy. Keeping in mind that you ARE on a picnic...is it ever acceptable to drink wine from plastic? Drink in moderation, stay safe and do it your way. Drink your wine from paper cups, not plastic and enjoy. If you’re serious about the flavours, a curved-rim glass top helps to hold the aromas, swirling the wine improves the tasting of aroma, its acidity, sleekness and astringency by mouth feel. Then, taking in the air and be kind to each other...you’re on a picnic!

WINE COUNTRY

Celebrating - Dylan McMahon and Dr Peter McMahon enjoy a very good wine.

SEVILLE MAKES A GREAT COMPANION SEVILLE Estate has been named Winery of the Year by leading wine expert James Halliday at the 2019 Halliday Wine Companion Awards. The winery was founded in 1972 by Dr Peter and Margaret McMahon and has been at the forefront of the modern Yarra Valley wine movement for 40 years. While other wineries have planted in proven grounds, Seville Estate’s roots are set in the soil of the Upper Yarra Valley at an elevation of 200 metres, away from the valley crowds. The cooler climate is expressed in its signature Shiraz, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines. Today the winery is owned by wine retailer Yiping Wang, but the McMahon connection remains in chief wine-maker and general manager, Dylan McMahon, who joined Seville Estate in 1998 and is following the passion ignited by his grandparents a generation before. Each year James Halliday and his tasting panel determine the best from a pool of several thousand wines featured in the annual Halliday Wine Companion Guide, which is recognised as the industry benchmark for Australian wine.

In addition to the prestigious Winery of the Year award, Seville Estate’s 2017 release includes 10 outstanding wines awarded with 95 points or more including its signature Shiraz, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay ranges. Mr McMahon said he was honoured to accept the award which was presented at the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne on Wednesday 1 August. “Seville Estate has been consistently producing great wines ever since my grandfather Peter McMahon first planted the vineyard," he said. "I feel the success is attributed to a combination of factors, location, vine material and a good understanding of the vineyard that can be translated into the wine-making. “My grandmother Margaret chose this site for its sheer beauty and it was Pete’s drive and determination to make great cool climate wines from it. "Our team work hard to ensure this vision continues.” The Seville Estate 2017 wine release was produced from 26 acres of estate vineyard and will be released on allocation from Friday 5 October.

Discover the secrets of the shed.

Fabulous wines from across the Yarra Valley.

SHED WINTER BLUES AT SHEDFEST VINEYARDS, restaurants, perhaps a cafe, a cellar door...visitors might find one or all these things when they visit the wineries of the Yarra Valley.

Sunday 14 October this year to house fabulous food, fine wine, live music and entertainment.

But they shouldn't forget the sheds! All wineries have sheds, usually housing crushers, barrels, tractors and other equipment vitally important to the production of fine wines, and on the second weekend in October each year those sheds shine as part of Shedfest.

Those who like a festival where they can take it easy, taste local produce, experience the charm of small vineyards, be captivated by stunning views, chat to the owners and winemakers, tap your toes to some fine tunes, take croquet lessons, play lawn games and watch the kids have fun, all while sipping delightful wines...they're going to love Shedfest Wine Festival.

The festival, now in its 16th year, was established to showcase the unique charm of family-owned wineries and vineyards in the Yarra Valley, and it does it with fun and style.

Another great reason to enjoy Shedfest is a portion of the proceeds from the sale of the Shedfest souvenir wine glass goes to a local community group, CFA or SES with more than $35,000 raised since 2009.

Growth and success of the Shedfest event has led to its expansion across the entire Yarra Valley with smaller wineries participating along the Warburton, Maroondah and Melba highways.

A $20 entry fee covers the souvenir glass, a voucher for one glass of wine and access and tastings at all participating wineries over the two days.

Twelve Yarra Valley wineries will open their sheds on Saturday 13 and

FARM FRESH

Raspberries are ready for picking in spring.

BERRIES ARE RIPE FOR THE PICKING Fruit fresh from the farm gate is hard to beat. Opportunities to get out into orchards, among the vines or down in the strawberry patch are ripe for the picking in the Dandenong Ranges and Yarra Valley during spring. The U-Pick season varies according to the fruit and there can be a limited window of opportunity to indulge in some, so planning farm yard forays is the best strategy to be sure to get a taste of all that's on offer. Visitors who don't have time this season to pick for themselves can grab freshly picked fruit straight from buckets, barrels and bins at many farms and orchards. Fruits and berries on offer include strawberries, blueberries, boysenberries, currants, raspberries, cherries, loganberries, youngberries, a wonderful

variety of stone fruit...and even lemons. Each farm has its own flavour and facilities. Visitors can linger in farm cafes and take home some home-style jams, sauces or chutneys to extend their experience or as a unique gift for family and friends. Some farms even offer bottling workshops. Different farms have different payment structures so it's a good idea to phone ahead to be sure of fees and payment options available. Sensible footwear, a hat and sunscreen are a must, and for those picking or buying fresh, a cooler bag will ensure the fruit survives the drive home in top condition. Information centres can recommend U-Pick and farm gate sale locations.

FARM FRESH

SHOP AND DINE FOR THE SEASON SEASONAL food is better - it's a fact. During spring in Victoria there's a huge variety of fruit and vegetables ripe for the picking. Most can be found in the Dandenong Ranges and Yarra Valley, with dozens of farms selling direct. From artichoke to asparagus, beans, beetroot, broad beans, broccoli, capsicum, carrots, cauliflower, chillies, cucumbers, leeks, lettuce, onions, parsley, parsnips, peas, silverbeet, snow peas, spinach, spring onion, squash and zucchini, there's no shortage of vegies available at their peak. When it comes to spring fruit, berries, grapefruit, lemons, imperial mandarins, rhubarb and strawberries are all at their best. Seasonal food is better for the climate, according to Environment Victoria. When food travels around the world to get to reach its consumer, it uses lots of energy which means lots of greenhouse gases. And it's not just the distance - it's also the refrigeration along the way, the energy that goes into packaging the food for the journey and storing

it when it arrives. Produce that is transported a long distance has to be harvested early so it doesn't rot during transit. Harvesting early doesn't allow the taste or nutrients to fully develop, which means that while consumers can buy tomatoes all year round, a winter tomato is pale, flavourless and doesn't have the full nutritional content. The alternative - eating local, seasonal produce — means that produce is picked as close to the time it will be eaten as possible, which means lots of flavour, colour and nutrients. Buying local seasonal produce also means consumers don't foot the bill for the transportation and storage. When summer arrives, apricots, basil, beans, beetroot, berries, capsicum, carrots, cherries, chillies, corn, cucumber, eggplant, figs, grapefruit, grapes, leeks, lettuce, melons, onions, Valencia oranges, parsley, peaches, pears, peas, plums, potatoes, rhubarb, silverbeet, spring onion, squash, strawberries, tomatoes and zucchini should be in shopping baskets and on meal menus. Raspberries are at their best during spring.
