MORE TO LOVE The editor’s desk On a recent trip to Japan I couldn't help but marvel at the public transport system. Granted it's population is much greater than ours and its geographical space much smaller but we could certainly learn a thing or two from their examples. The boutique buses Noosa Council recently mooted for the region that can be tracked with an app that operates in real time is running smoothly in the resort town of Matsumoto. And anyone who's ridden Japan's bullet trains, known there as the Shinkansen, will appreciate their efficiency and luxury. We traveled over 1000km one day for lunch. It took about the same amount of time as it used to take me to commute from Noosa to Brisbane on our trains but was far more enjoyable. I particularly liked the coffee cart. It seems the Japanese can eat and drink on trains without making a mess. ●

THIS WEEK WE’RE TALKING ABOUT…
ROLL UP, ROLL UP BY MARGARET MACCOLL Show steward Kieth Humphreys is approaching this year's Noosa Country Show with a tinge of sadness for the loss of so many of the area's dairy farmers to drought and financial ruin resulting from the drop in milk prices. Kieth has been the show's horse steward and ringmaster and now as dairy cattle steward he has watched the numbers of dairy farmers at the show dwindle. "The dairy industry is in financial turmoil. We used to get 30 to 40 dairy farmers. I'll be lucky to get 10," he said."I don't reckon people know how much they're hurting." Kieth praised the stoic group as he readies for the dairy cattle judging on Friday morning at this year's show. As steward in addition to providing a running commentary during the event it is Kieth's job to ensure the judges are ready and the show runs smoothly. "The dairy people are lovely people. They're the salt of the earth," he said. "They're so used to adversity if the judge doesn't like their cow they don't care." Kieth said he was pleased judges backed up their decisions on the winning cows with
Show bags and rides will be on offer.
Local livestock will be judged. an explanation for their choice. Beef cattle, dogs and equestrian will also be judged at the show as will arts and crafts, horticulture and cookery. This year's country show promises a range of events, activities and animals. Show spokeswoman Mia Hacker said the young farmers challenge had been a popular event last year and would be extended with even more challenges this year.
They'll be rides to enjoy.
The animal nursery is always a popular event.
There will be rides and amusements, performances, the animal nursery and fireworks on Friday evening at 7pm.
The Noosa Country Show will be held this Friday and Saturday at Pomona Showgrounds. ●
BRAVERY ACKNOWLEDGED
ROAD SAFETY GROUP EFFORT
Two Noosa police officers were presented with Queensland Police Bravery medals last week for their actions in 2014 taking into custody an armed man without anyone being harmed. Senior sergeant Ben Carroll said the extraordinary event in November 2014 began for senior constable Adam Tickner and sergeant Dean Holmes when they were called to a serious assault. The officers found a woman with serious injuries and set about trying to find the man who had inflicted them. Snr sgt Carroll said a television cameraman became caught up in the drama when he crossed paths with the assailant who stole his car at gunpoint. The event came to a head at the petrol station on Eumundi-Noosa Road, Doonan, after the man crashed at high speed into a gas tank. When it didn't ignite he went looking for a cigarette lighter at the store but the quickthinking attendant locked the doors. Snr sgt Carroll said the officers were able to talk the man down and take him into custody. The gun was later found to be a replica pistol.
Through a program involving engineering, education and enforcement Noosa and Cooroy police, Noosa Council and the Department of Transport and Main Roads are joining forces to try and improve road safety and reduce the number of accidents in the region. Noosa Heads senior sergeant Ben Carroll said in the past two months there had been 42 accidents reported to police just in the Noosa Heads region which doesn't account for accidents which don't require reporting where there are no injuries and only minor damage. Of the accidents reported 13 involved people receiving injuries from minor to severe. Fourteen of the accidents reported were classed hit and run with most occurring in car parks where someone has damaged another car and "cleared out". Snr sgt Carroll said working together the group discussed traffic issues and responded with police enforcement, education or engineering initiatives. He said in one instance the road surface
Senior constable Adam Tickner being presented by Assistant Commissioner Central Region Clem O’Regan. Assistant Commissioner Clem O'Regan and Superintendent Darryl Johnson congratulated the officers who were among 85 officers, staff and residents to be recognised for their "outstanding commitment to serve the Queensland community". Sgt Holmes, snr Const Tickner along with senior constable Peter Low, senior constable Michael Grigalius and Peter Steer were acknowledged for their bravery in the incident. ●
One of Noosa's many roundabouts. at a roundabout on Eenie Creek Road had been scraped to improve the texture, resulting in a reduced number of accidents. On other occasions police have acted on complaints received from the public of speeding or hooning. Snr sgt Carroll said a lot of accidents occurred at roundabouts with the large number of visitors to the area an unfamiliar with the roads a contributing factor."It all comes back to driver behaviour," he said. "You must give way to vehicles on roundabouts." ●

Jesus 28, rings his bell like a town crier notifying residents to bring out their rubbish for collection. Jesus was beaten and left to die in a alleyway in an apparent Mexican gang attack. He was found and taken to hospital but died on the operating table less than a few weeks after Dean Saffron took this series of photos, leaving behind a widow and two young children.
FRONT ROW SEAT BY HOLLIE HARRIS
A
documentary photographer film maker has the privilege of expansive knowledge of the world, cultures, the processes of technology and business, and the small, yet magical moments of daily life. They experience exquisite beauty, both of the natural world and within human nature, but also witness pain and suffering, hatred and violence; an intoxicating mix. As readers, we admire the candid intimacy of a beautiful image and rest our thoughts on the journalist who bears witness to the moment which is otherwise be inaccessible to us. Rarely do we get to understand the consuming need to capture this intimacy or the process behind it. Multi award-winning documentary photographer film maker Dean Saffron has seen things; things that fade away a little when he's surfing his 10 foot Tully St John plank in the Laguna Bay. He peels back the layers of a mysterious career with me and the consequences of having to vanish into the background. "As an established commercial
photographer shooting fashion, resorts, lifestyle and food, I was also shooting a lot of nude art for exhibitions and Black and White magazine. Since I was very young I have had an awareness of the randomness of where you are born dictating life circumstances and trying to understand the question of why other citizens can't access necessities. This led to me focusing on human resilience and engaging with my responsibility of being a global citizen." Immersing in aid-work projects with World Food Program, UNICEF and UNHCR back in 2007, Dean felt compelled to dig deeper. This lead him into many world food projects, including a vast refugee camp on the Myanmar border and also a cholera unit in Dakar during an outbreak. "While shocking on some level, this work was so important to bear witness to suffering. It serves as reminder of the importance of immunisation and sanitation," he says. The cliche of wanting to be a "fly on the wall" is necessary for journalistic documentary work. Dean is humble about his skill of blending in. He has quietly witnessed and immersed in such heinous crimes, so I assume
the trauma must run deep. To observe, without disturbing the world you are trying to capture, I ask him, do you eventually begin to disappear in your own world? "You do eventually become a voyeur in your own life. The heavy work and the negative stories are a horrific reminder of what mankind is capable of. There is a level of PTSD, but it's part of the work-life," he says. "You just have to focus on all the wonderful things in the world and embrace people's interest in your stories. It's an opportunity to open up a discussion about global issues." In 2011, Toowoomba, Grantham and several towns in Queensland's Lockyer Valley were hit by deadly floods. Dean was flown in first on the scene. Not for the short-lived gratuitous media coverage, but as documentarian. Jumping out of a helicopter and spending the next two weeks living on the ground, he not only documented unthinkable atrocities but worked within the community making food and helping survivors to cope. "I have to feel and live every moment as the subject," he says.
Dean's work has appeared in numerous publications including The New York Times, The National Geographic Traveller China Edition, Black and White Magazine, Sydney Morning Herald, The Australian Newspaper and The Australian Geographic - just to name a few. He is a man who respects the responsibility of being a global citizen and appreciates the privilege of being invited into people's lives. This ability to bear witness to moments that would otherwise be inaccessible to most of us has forged him an incredible career. As a young boy existing through a traumatic childhood, Dean recalls the father returning home, heart filled with hatred after enduring horrors of fighting in the Australian contingent of the Vietnam War. "His job, saved for men young and lean enough to fit into the enemy tunnels, was commonly known as a rat boy and the psychological terror of being the first down a dark and narrow hole to identify and disarm sources of danger has never left him. Not to mention the oozing cankerous sores on his back from Agent Orange exposure that still weep to this day."

Salt of the Earth; a mini documentary on surfboard craftsman Tom Wegener has won best film at the International French Film Festival of Anglet. "Like so many soldiers, my father married almost instantly after his service and set to work on creating a family in the hope of carving out a new purpose," he says. Both Dean and his brother were born with severe and complex illnesses and so hospitals were a common theme throughout the first few years of their lives. "I knew from a very early age that I wanted to understand other cultures. In essence I think that is why I probably I became a documentary photographer." Dean recalls his experience shooting The Waste Pickers - a 2017 image series exhibiting this month in the National Gallery of Human Rights in Mexico City. The exhibit is a tribute to the unofficial, unrecognised and often unpaid labour that enables the massive urban sprawl of Mexico City to function. "The constant scrutiny of locals signalled to me that it is not normal for photographers to be walking around in the most dangerous part of Mexico. This was apparent by the looks through windows and twitching of curtains which fuelled my desire to capture daily life. "One vivid memory I have is that a black utility pulled up less than 40 meters from a garbage truck that I was filming. Three doors opened and revealed three men wearing immaculately tailored suits which was such a juxtaposition to the urban grittiness of rubbish recycling. "One fellow with stereotypical gangster features followed his minder into a house where he remained for about 5 minutes. During this time, the guard stationed outside the house revealed his Uzi machine gun in the interior of his jacket and I gesticulated that my interest was only in
"I live to create, to surf and to love my wife. That's it really."
"The work goes on up to 18 hours a day, shooting out, hauling-in, eating on the run, and, of course, barely sleeping. In such close quarters you need a big heart and a sense of humour." - Life on a longline fishing boat by Dean Saffron.
Saffron in his happy place. Photo: Richard Ennis recording the daily grind of seeking out a living through waste picking, rather than documenting crime syndicates. "He then calmly closed his jacket realising that my interpreter and I were nonthreatening." This year, Dean shot a mini documentary, Salt of the Earth about Noosa surfing legend, Tom Wegener. It's been a career highlight for Saffron and earned him the best short at the International French Film Festival of Anglet. "I have always had a fascination with organic craftsmen, driven to keep practicing their art and learning from process while developing a relationship with an object that in turn becomes the subject and vice versa. So, when I can across a guy making finless surfboards out of wood, I had to meet him. "Enter Tom Wegner. When I met Tom, I was impacted by his pure stoke, his zest
for life and commitment to green surfing. When I arrived at his workshop it was everything I thought it would be, rustic and character laden. Filming in his studio was one of the great filming highlights I have had due to the authenticity and ambience." Salt of the Earth will screen locally at Australia's premier surfing film festival the Noosa Surf Film Festival in October. Do yourself a favour and head along to the festival, if only just to watch this exquisitely joyful four minutes of film. For now, Dean will head back to Mexico to open The Waste Pickers exhibition and to participate on a panel. While he's there, he will patiently wait for more stories to unfold around him. "My stories have always found me," he says. After Mexico, he will sink his teeth into tuition workshops to encourage all levels of photo enthusiasts to enhance their skills
further on a National scale, sharing his wealth of knowledge with kids workshops, documentary workshops and fine art nudes. (Expressions of interest are welcome via email on his website) The infectious fun and zest for life that spills out of Saffron is quite a gift to those around him. The juxtapose of a complex and inquisitive mind ticking away behind this vibrant smiling face is unique. Again, the man has seen things. "I have to do this because I give images a voice. I get to bring other people into the experience and then delve into the journey it takes them on. It's so important. "I have to give a voice to those who have none." SURF CLUB MARKS 90 SAFE YEARS BY TESSA MAPSTONE For 90 years Noosa's surf lifesavers have been keeping beach goers safe. As the Noosa Surf Life Saving Club prepared for a huge weekend of birthday celebrations from 14 September, club president Ross Fischer said the club's success was easy to measure. "All those 90 years we've had zero deaths between the flags that we patrol, and we're very proud of that, that's something that we stand on," he said. Formed in 1928, the club's first meeting was held at Cooroy, and the first patrol was at Castaways Beach, before it was moved to Noosa Main Beach. "Back in those days it was probably just sand dunes and Noosa was probably just some fishing shacks," Ross said. "People from Gympie used to come down for holidays by the river and go fishing." Much has changed over the years, but the commitment of the club's members has remained. To mark the milestone birthday, there will be a weekend of festivities, which will coincide with the completion of the supporters' club's new refurbishments. Past and present members, or anyone who has had an association with the club, is invited to register for an evening of celebrations, looking back on the club's history through photographs and speeches, with finger food, live music and, of course, birthday cake.
The surf club was once a shack on the beach.
The 90th Birthday organising committee are long-standing member Jean Irvine, life member Tim Irvine, patrol person and masters competitor Julie Fidler, president and life member Ross Fisher, supporters club general manager Anton Mogg, life member and first aid team coach Lenore Grice, deputy director of the JAC Committee Sacha Poxleitner, and lifesaving committee and patrol captain's representative Michael Geary.
Keeping Noosa's beaches safe through the years.
Registration and a general get together will be held at the club on Friday 14 September. Across the weekend members of the public can get involved with the celebrations. The Seahorse Nippers Program will be on the beach on Saturday morning, and a sand sculpting competition for children
"It's one of the few times you will see a march-past on Noosa Beach," Ross said. "We'll finish with a social hour back at the club to say goodbye to old friends before they head home." For the full program and more information go to noosasurfclub.com.au/ life-saving-noticeboard ●
5-10 years, and 10 years plus will be judged by acclaimed artist Dennis Massoud. On Sunday morning former Australian Champion surf lifesaver Darren Mercer will host a range of water displays and demonstrations of rescues and surf sports between 9-10.30am, before the club's senior team and two nipper teams perform a march past and presentation at 10.30am.

ALL TAFE OPTIONS ARE ON THE TABLE BY MARGARET MACCOLL Noosa Councillors decided at a special meeting called last Friday to continue negotiations with state government on the future of the former Tewantin TAFE site including its purchase price. Councillors drew no conclusions on the potential use of the 11-hectare site after discussing the options raised in a report put together by council officers and consultant David Thomas who council had engaged in April. The report raised various community and commercial options for the use of the site which operated as a TAFE college from 2006 until it closed in 2014 due to reducing student numbers (from 700 to 200) and "an agenda to rationalise training assets". At the time courses were transferred from Tewantin to Nambour and Mooloolaba campuses. Mayor Tony Wellington said council had three options. "We can do nothing ... we could purchase the site and rent it out to a commercial or community enterprise ... we could purchase it, develop the site for a specified purpose, and then on-sell it," he said. Uses for the site suggested by the report included community facilities, cemetery expansion or for a bus depot. It could be leased commercially for an education facility, aged care, church or for mixed use. Despite discussions with potential tenants the project officer was unable
The unused TAFE site. to identify an anchor tenant or major commercial interest and the report noted there was plenty of commercial and community space available in the shire. Cr Wellington said even under a bestcase scenario, with Council purchasing the site and leasing the buildings at a reasonable
commercial rate, the net outcome could still result in an overall loss to Council. "There are repair, maintenance and depreciation costs to consider, as well as possibly refitting the buildings for a new purpose," he said. The environmental value of the site was
also discussed and identified as containing endangered vegetation and bush identified as habitat for koalas, the glossy black cockatoo and the wallum rocketfrog. Any final decision regarding possible purchase of the site will come to council for determination, Cr Wellington said. ●

TIME TO SIGN ON FOR NDIS BY MARGARET MACCOLL The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) can be life changing for people with a disability according to Sunshine Butterflies CEO Leanne Walsh and now is the time to register for the scheme which will be rolled out across the Sunshine Coast in January. "The traditional model had block funds going to organisations and people being part of the organisation," she said. "The new funding goes to individuals. They need to think what to do with it to have a good life. They will have the choice of where they go and what they want to do. The NDIS gives families a real opportunity to provide their child with the future they have always dreamt of. We want to help families achieve their goals." Sunshine Butterflies, which is an official NDIS provider, has brought together more than 25 local disability service providers and will next week host an open day to help individuals and families explore the opportunities on offer. "People are very confused about what the NDIS is, how it works and what it can offer them," she said. The NDIS will also affect the way providers operate and the way they will need to market their services to clients. People eligible for the scheme need to fill in a detailed form which they bring
with them to an interview in order to obtain their financial support. Leanne said Sunshine Butterflies had already had experience dealing with the NDIS in delivering services to people from Sydney or Melbourne where the scheme has been operating for some time. On Tuesday 11 September Sunshine Butterflies will be conducting two free NDIS Information Sessions at 10.30am and 12.30pm at the Open Day being held from 10am-2pm at

SLEEP ROUGH FOR CHRISTMAS JOY Each Christmas Lorraine Kenway and her group of Santa's Classy Helpers supply needy families with food, clothing and toys for the children that the group gather together throughout the year. This Saturday Lorraine and two others will spend the night sleeping rough to gain a taste of what some of those needy families endure and to boost the coffers for Santa's Classy Helpers 2018 Christmas shopping day. Each year the Santa's Classy Helpers, founded by Lorraine, ensures that over 300 local needy families in Noosa and surrounds has a great Christmas by inviting them to the shopping day held in early December at The J. Each family is given a shopping trolley and is helped to shop by one of Santa's Helpers. They receive loads of packaged food, fruit and fresh vegetables, along with clothing, pyjamas and toys for the children. Lions also help out on the day by supplying a sausage sizzle to those waiting in the queue to get into The J. Lorraine said this year was particularly difficult as there are so many charities in need. Through the combined Rotary clubs of Noosa, all left-over goods from the shopping day will be taken to farmers in some of the worst affected areas. So, if you are out and about on the evening on Saturday 8 September call past Classy Lady Boutique on Gympie Terrace, Noosaville and encourage Lorraine and her friends by throwing some money in the hat to help those less fortunate. ●

THE LOWDOWN
DUO RIDING HIGH BY MARGARET MACCOLL Noosa businessmen Scott Macken and Carl Burroughs and a group of about 14 friends are heading to the world’s highest passable road to ride their Royal Enfield motorbikes and support a couple of charities along the way. Carl, who owns dental practices in Woombye and Beerwah, said like other motorcycle enthusiasts they support Noosa’s annual Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride which raises awareness and money for men’s health issues, in particular, prostate cancer and mental illness. “This year we want to ramp up our efforts and raise a more significant amount of money for this very worthwhile cause,”

he said. “We had the idea last year after riding around Nepal with a group of friends, who agreed that if we are going on such adventures we should use these adventures to raise money for charity. We all blog and use Facebook to tell our friends how we are going, so extending this to get a broader following just makes sense. “Also, the charity we support does amazing work in the area of prostate cancer and men’s mental issues and due to men’s inherent nature not to talk about health and mental issues, we don’t think these issues get anywhere enough funding and publicity. Prostate cancer is the number one cancer in men with over 300,000 men dying from it each year. Mental health is an even bigger killer with over 500,000 men committing suicide each year - that’s one a minute.” Scott, who owns Scooter Style in Noosaville, will turn 50 during the ride and said he had a personal connection with the charities. He said he had a couple of friends suffering prostate cancer and like many small business owners had a couple of mental health issues. “I take an anti-depressant and antianxiety pill every day to keep myself balanced,” he said. Last year the charity raised more than $10m worldwide with more than $1m spent in Australia on suicide prevention and prostate cancer research. SPORTING STARS PAY NOOSA A VISIT From playing local junior club touch football in primary school to representing Australia on the world stage, for Rachel Walsh and Ali Bakhach the days of playing in the U10s seems so long ago. Having honed their skills with local clubs through their junior years, to representing the Sunshine Coast region at school and club level, and then Queensland at a national level, the two young locals recently returned home as world champions having represented their country at the 2018 Federation of International Touch Youth World Cup in Malaysia. After attending the national selection trials in Sydney earlier in the year, Rachel from Marcoola and Ali from Sunrise Beach both received a call up to don the green and gold at the international level. Rachel (U20 Women) and Ali (U20 Mixed) joined the Australian squads and headed to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to pit their skills against the best in the world. Going into the event, New Zealand had a hold on the Cup, so the challenge was there for the Australians to bring their A games, and that they did. Nine countries attended the event including New Zealand, South Africa, United States, Malaysia, Singapore, India, China, Hong Kong and Australia. Most teams played 3 games per day from
August 8-11 in very hot and trying conditions, so it was an enormous achievement to bring the World Cup home to Australia. Rachel and Ali received incredible support from the local Touch Football community with both Coolum and Noosa Touch Football clubs providing financial assistance to the players. Rachel, a second year university student, also received very generous support from the Sunshine Coast Regional Council and many Marcoola businesses got behind her in a raffle and with donations. “There were so many local businesses that supported me, I want to thank them all for their generosity!” Rachel said. “The experience was incredibly special and the community support was overwhelming. We live in a truly amazing and very special part of the world” she said. Coolum and Noosa Touch Football Clubs have Open Men’s and Women’s, Mixed and Junior competitions. Interested players can contact the clubs via email at coolumtouch@gmail.com or noosatouch2012@gmail.com. ●

Dorothy's at it again! This time Tewantin's travelling Dorothy Jenkins is painting for charity and her art group's art show at Tinbeerwah. Readers will recall our story recently about how 92-year-old Dorothy had just come back from her month-long trip to Normandy, the Loire Valley, Paris, Glasgow. Edinburgh and the Scottish Highlands—made without an iPhone, a tablet or a computer and all on her own. She's been back two months now and the amazing Dorothy—in between ballet classes, mah-jong with her mates and 5K walks twice a week with her Tewantin Tickers walking group has also found time to pick up a paintbrush. For three days starting on Friday, September 14, Dorothy and the other 39 artists in her class will open their hearts and their talents to Katie Rose Cottage Hospice with a share of the sales of their works at their annual show plus a gold coin entry fee and the raffle of a painting by former TAG tutor, Lyn Fraser-Roberts. In recent years the group has given more than $5000 to local charities, including the War Widows Guild, Thursday Girls and Katie Rose Cottage Hospice The art show is dedicated to the memory of the late Gwen Blair, who founded TAG in 1994, making it one of the longest established art groups on the Sunshine Coast..

ODE TO ENERGY He brought coal into the parliament To show he’s not afraid To destroy our sustaining atmosphere. How much, I wonder, to be made?

The drought is now his first concern. A big band-aid will be applied. Global warming is the exacerbator, But this will be denied. The merry lads of Canberra, So far from being “the adults”, Will let the NEG expire, And claim these are good results. Oh, woe is to Australia, The land of wind and sun. Our power could be free by now, If the coal in coalition didn’t chum. Steve Hall, Cooroy
CHURCH MESSAGE UNDER QUESTION In his recent letter Brian MacRitchie attempts to blame child abusers and those who covered up their actions for all the problems besetting the Catholic Church. Brian conveniently fails to mention many of the other controversial aspects of the Catholic Church that dog its reputation, such as: The Pope telling parents to send their LGBTI kids for psychiatric help, the church as employer legally fires single mothers, Catholics want canon law to take precedence over Australian law, bishops calling women who have terminations nazis, the church’s antiquated view on divorce, contraception, marriage equality, celibacy and women in the priesthood. And then on top of all of this the church demands it pays no tax on its business ventures. Perhaps Brian should carefully consider the message his church is sending to modern Australia before embarking on any “missionary zeal” he recommends in an attempt to restore his faith and ”to make Christianity commendable to everyone”. Robin Bristow, Noosaville.

ANOTHER SPEED LIMIT There is a call to sign a speed petition. This time for David Low Way near the Coolum Sports Centre. Mind you, this is a very good road, nice and wide, almost straight, no obstructions and not a single dwelling on the ocean side. Really, the speed limit could safely be raised to 100 km/h from Stumers Creek right up to the motorway. A few lines on the road for turning lanes

would facilitate traffic in and out of the sports centre. The cost of the measure would be similar to the cost of erecting speed signs. Speed limits are mostly nothing more but cheap band-aid solutions. A recent survey found that 75 per cent of motorists disobey - at least sometimes -
speed limits. Why is that? Three quarters of the population are not all crooks. They resent speed limits that evidently just don’t make sense, such as long stretches of road marked “road works” when clearly no work on the road is made. There may be road plant rumbling some-

DAD’S DAY AT GARDENS WAS A REAL WALK IN THE PARK The Noosa Botanic Gardens Plant Fair was enjoyed on Sunday by plenty of dads and their kids as well as other family members who took the opportunity to spend a few hours pottering around the plants, checking out the classic cars or having a bite to eat. Noosa Botanic Gardens Friends president Jill Brownlee said attendance increased this year with attendees taking advantage of the gardening information sessions, stopping to watch sculptor Shane Christensen carve a native bee habitat from a felled tree and filling their boots with purchased plants. She said proceeds from the event would be redirected back to the gardens. ●

LIVE
CRAZY GOOD FUN BY HOLLIE HARRIS Louis Nowra's darkly funny 1992 play Cosi occupies a special place in Australian Theatre History. Noosa Arts Theatre's Jane Rivers is directing a spectacular version of this much loved Australian classic. The play, which sees a young director's attempt to stage Mozart's Cosi fan Tutte with the patients inside a mental health hospital, has been revived many times, was turned into a successful film, and has been on and off the school syllabus in the decades since its premiere. Jane has great vision for this incarnation and is loving working with the talented cast to create a vibrant production Cosi. 'Laughter is the best medicine' and Noosa Arts Theatre's version of Cosi certainly promises there will be no shortage of guffaws, giggles and hearty explosions. A realist drama set in the 1970's, Cosi explores interactions between a young theatre noosatoday.com.au
director and a group of asylum patients. The play is described as 'funny, warm and wonderfully mad' but it can be argued that its highlights are in fact the insights it offers into the lives of those who are no longer considered 'normal' by society's standards. Cosi is Australian theatre's great take on madness, filtered with a distinctly local sense of place and of humour. Noosa Arts Theatres production in September is not to be missed. WHAT’S ON
NEWS
CRAFTY COTTAGE
Local legend Jan Croft.
JAN STILL BREAKING RECORDS - AT 75! It’s 57 years since Jan Croft broke her first Australian swimming record as an 18-yearold prodigy. Now she’s broken her latest - the Australian Masters 1500 metres Freestyle. At the recent short course meet at Brisbane’s Valley Pool, Jan set a new mark of 26 minutes 37.22 seconds. There was just a fingertip touch in it, as she sliced a miniscule 0.19 seconds from the old record for the 75-79 age group. Even more remarkably, the old record had stood for seven years, set by Miami’s legendary Masters swimmer Denise Robertson. Jan, of course, is Noosa’s own legend.
Today, she is a leading coach for Masters and adult squads at the Noosa Aquatic Centre. Squad members feel a mixture of admiration and awe, knowing they’re reaping the benefit of Jan’s impressive pedigree - from teenage national record holder in 1961 to FINA Masters World Champion in the 3000 metres open water event in 2014. And, in 2018, breaking records again! Jan now has her sights set on the 2018 Pan Pac Masters Championships at the Gold Coast in November. ●
It has long been known that the Buderim Craft Cottage is one place to go to exercise one's creativity and for those looking to purchase local artisan crafted special treasures and gifts, look no further. The Buderim Craft Cottage is opening its doors and inviting the local community to come along for its "Spring Open Day" at the Atrium Gallery, Buderim Craft Cottage on Saturday 8 September from 10am 2pm. This is a great opportunity to enjoy the display of art and craft while chatting to the artists and watching them create their masterpieces. Featured artists include representatives from many groups, including multi mixed media art, patchwork, fabric art, painting, pottery, silversmiths and yarns and fibres. Along with exhibitors there will be some fun craft activities. Buderim Craft Cottage was started by a keen group of artists meeting in homes and rented rooms around Buderim. In 1967 Buderim Craft Cottage was officially formed. Over the 50 years the membership has grown to 13 individual groups and over 300 members. In 1975 they moved to their present location. The Cottage has had many additions and improvements over the years and this, now, provides a beautiful setting for annual or biennial group exhibitions, Buderim Craft Cottage Winter School as well as the well- known community Buderim Easter and Christmas Fairs. Among the group is silver artist Carolan Ciot. Carolan began working with silver over 30 years ago taking weekly classes
Buderim Craft Cottage in Wollongong NSW where she then lived but stopped the craft for a period of time when the rigors of life as a working Mum took precedence. Upon retiring to the Sunshine Coast, Carolan's former hobby quickly developed into a passion after discovering the Buderim Craft Cottage where she resumed working and experimenting with silver and participating in varying workshops at 'The Summer School' in Toowoomba and with local Artists and Jewelers. "I have always been interested in all aspects of design and I love and appreciate beautiful things," she said. "I am inspired by nature, colour and texture and working with silver and stones encompasses all of this. I really enjoy the journey that creating each piece takes me on. What starts as one idea generally develops organically into something quite different which I find really exciting.". Each piece that Carolan creates is unique and is made from the finest quality silver and gemstones. For further information phone 5450 1714 or head to the website at www.buderimcraftcottage.com.au ●

WHAT’S ON SINGER SONGWRITER SUPREMO JEFF LANG TO TAKE TO THE STAGE Jeff Lang has earned worldwide acclaim as a virtuosic guitarist, a dynamic songwriter and a startlingly unique live performer, and he's heading to The Imperial Hotel Eumundi on Saturday 15 September. Blending rock, roots, folk, blues, ballads, instrumentals, improvisation and a devastatingly high level of musicality, Jeff Lang is a singularly unique performer in our world. With a back catalogue of 16 studio albums and his music released in China, Europe, USA and Japan, Jeff has toured the globe for years playing the world's major festivals, clubs, venues and major performing arts centres. He's repeatedly graced the many stages of Australia, New Zealand, USA, Canada, Japan, China, India, Reunion Island and many countries in Europe. Over the years, Lang has built up a devoted, almost cult-like following with his live performances. Working without a set list and allowing the unique energy of each night to shape the songs, Lang's live shows have become much talked about, always taking the audience along for the ride. Throughout his career, Jeff has been showered with achievements and awards - the most outstanding would be his seven ARIA award nominations, as well as his three wins in 2002, 2010 and 2012. His album, 'Carried In Mind' won the 2012 ARIA award for 'Best Blues & Roots', was awarded 'Album
of The Year' by Australia's roots music bible Rhythms and won the 'National Folk Recording Award' presented by Australia's National Film and Sound Archives. Always one to experiment with genres and instrumentation, Jeff's world music project Djan Djan won the 2010 ARIA for 'Best World Release'. His latest album, 'Alone in Bad Company' was released in 2017 by ABC/ Universal to rapturous media reviews. His most recent world music collaboration is 'Maru Tarang' with Asin Langa and Bhungar Manganiya from Rajasthan and Australian-based Indian tabla player Bobby Singh. This group combines ancient Rajasthani folk music with Jeff's individual sound of 'Disturbed Folk". It's been widely acknowledged that Jeff Lang is an extraordinarily individual musician. What enhances his unique nature is his steadfast adherence to a prolific and diverse musical palette and output. A songwriter, a collaborator, a guitar virtuoso and a stunning lyricist, Jeff Lang crafts songs as novellas - rich with depth and vision, yet with an open breathe for individual interpretation. TICKETS: Pre-sale $25 (+ booking fee) through Oztix or at the Imperial Hotel (Ph: 5442 8811). $30 at the door Doors open 7.30pm ●

NOOSA UNDER A WICKED SPELL Get set for a thrillifying experience, as Little Seed Theatre Company presents Wicked at the J this weekend. Wicked, one of the longest running Broadway shows of all time, has captured the imagination of audiences around the world. Now, it's coming to Noosa as we gear up for the Noosa Show long weekend. The original production of Wicked, starring Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth, premiered on Broadway in 2003, and broke box office records around the world. An alternative telling of the Wizard of Oz, Wicked shares the enthralling story of Elphaba (the Wicked Witch of the West) and Galinda (the Good Witch of the North). Elphaba (played by Abigail Waugh and Emily Potts in double casting), was born with emerald green skin. She's is smart, passionate and misunderstood. Galinda (Angelique Turner and Jacqueline Elley) is beautiful, ambitious and popular. Their initial rivalry turns into the unlikeliest of friendships until the world decides to call one good and the other wicked.
Among the show-stopping numbers are No One Mourns the Wicked, Popular and the spine-tingling Defying Gravity. The powerhouse team behind Little Seed's production includes creative director Johanna Wallace, director David Williams, musical director Connie Groves and choreographer Kim Abbott. David has directed an extraordinary 66 musical productions during his long career. David says Wicked has been a huge challenge, but the audience can expect to see "six months of hard work by a creative and highly-skilled team". Connie originally hails from the United States, where having Disney World on her doorstep shaped her career. She says Wicked is a "dream musical" for vocalists. "I have never worked so hard on a musical while smiling so much," Connie adds. The production features a large ensemble cast of almost 70 young performers, including double-casting of the principal roles. Johanna Wallace says the Sunshine Coast is a "breeding ground for amazing talent".
"As the curtains rise on Wicked, we hope you will love your journey to Oz. We also hope this show inspires our young cast and audience alike to dream big - to 'defy gravity' and soar!"
Tickets for Wicked almost sold out, so book your seats at The J from Friday 7 and Saturday 8 September at 2.00pm and 6.30pm. Tickets are available from www. thej.com.au â—?

When it comes to health, many women are great at caring for others but often put themselves last. Jean Hailes for Women's Health will be helping women to put their own health first during the 2018 Women's Health Week, 3-7 September. This year, we are encouraging women to make time to better care for their health. Research tells us the biggest barrier to a woman maintaining a healthy lifestyle is lack of time. "We can be so busy taking care of others that we can fail to find the time for our own health," says Janet Michelmore AO, Executive Director of Jean Hailes. "Many of us need reminding that sometimes we have to put ourselves first to ensure we are able to look after others. "We're encouraging all women to put themselves first by signing up to the week to receive our free health information, including some simple steps to help pave the way to positive health outcomes." We also want women to set aside some time during the week of 3-7 September to focus on their health. Here are FIVE simple things you can do for yourself during Women's Health Week: Here are FIVE simple things you can do for yourself during Women's Health Week: Make an appointment with your GP for a health check and ensure you are up to date with any preventive screenings, such as cervical cancer and breast checks Spend at least 30 minutes a day doing
moderate activity such as walking. Three 10-minute sessions are just as effective as 30 minutes of continuous activity Invest time in your nutrition by shopping fresh and preparing your meals at home, or swapping unhealthy snacks for healthier options (such as your afternoon biscuit for a piece of fruit) Nourish your emotional wellbeing. Do something during the week for no other reason than it makes you feel good, such as reading a book, watching a funny movie, or catching up with a friend Try to change at least one unhealthy habit such as smoking, snacking when you are not hungry, spending too much time sitting, or skipping breakfast. Jean Hailes for Women's Health also invites women to host their own Women's Health Week event. It could be a morning tea, a fun health information session, a workplace gathering, a book club session, a bike ride, or even just a walk with friends - whatever you like! It's easy and fun. Visit the Women's Health Week website for more details and, like last year, you could be one of more than 1500 events around the country celebrating women's good health during the week of 3-7 September. Go on - put yourself first. By investing in yourself, you'll be better able to look after those you care about. For more information on Women's Health Week and for inspiration on fun events you can join in during the campaign, go to www.womenshealthweek. com.au ● noosatoday.com.au

NEIGHBOURHOOD VISION Inspired by their surroundings a group of neighbours living on a Tinbeerwah street have united to explore their interest in art and will this week hold their inaugural exhibition. It was through surprising revelations at neighbourly BBQs and inside artist jokes that the former strangers realised their shared passion for art.'A Street Shows its Art' is the work of neighbours Monika Juengling, Lily Hass, Tammy McGarry, Pamela Mitchell, Kurt and Heidi Becker, Pauline Ramsay-Murray, Heidi Woodman and Chantal Desplat. Opening at Corooy's Butter Factory Arts Centre this Saturday the exhibition is an immersive cross section of painting, ceramics, printmaking, jewellery and
sculpture - all made on good ol' Gumboil Road. Painter Tammy McGarry has lived on Gumboil Road in Tinbeerwah for the past 10 years and said it offers abundant inspiration. "Every one of us lives surrounded by stunning rainforest, creeks, lakes or dams, fabulous greenery with regular wildlife visitors passing through," she said. "As artists it was no accident that we all chose to live here." 'A Street Shows Its Art' opens 5-7pm on Saturday 8 September at BFAC in Cooroy. Free entry. All welcome and cash bar available. The exhibition continues until 16 October. â—?

DOLPHINS TO TAKE IT ALL THE WAY? Noosa Dolphins The Noosa Dolphins are extremely proud to have our Under 14's Dolphins and Under 16/17's Reds through the 2018 SCRU Grand Final to be hosted at Stockland Stadium Kawana this Sunday. Both squads are extremely tight and worked hard all season to get the results needed to make the final. This takes a strong commitment not only from the players but also their parents who support in the background, to help achieve the goals needed to play in both strong competitions. I would like to acknowledge our fantastic coaches and managers who equally give up hours each week to not only impart the skills of the game of rugby but perhaps most importantly the mentoring, the teamwork dynamics and the life skills guidance that these outstanding volunteers give to the boys and girls who play at Dolphins. The Noosa Dolphins wish you all the very best of luck. Under 14's: A place in the grand final marks another successful season for this age group most of whom have been Dolphins together since 2010/11. The 5 players new to the squad this year have been welcome additions, earning the respect of their team mates through dedication, hard work and impact on the paddock. Each year is a step up in both quality and physicality and despite some major injury setbacks to the squad, the boys have remained united to the cause, bonded by attitude, discipline and the true mate-ship code of conduct. Well done and congratulations U14s, you can all be proud.

· Tane Smith (U13) · James Auckland (U13) U 17's: The Noosa Red U17s team are delighted to be playing in the Grand Final on Sunday 9th September at the Sunshine Coast Stadium. Mateship is what we are all about and we have had to dig deep over the season with many a game played without a bench due to a plethora of injuries. We are fortunate enough to have 4 key coaching staff and support who have shaped and guided us to the team we are today. One of the highlights of the seasons was Nick Far-Jones offering us some words of wisdom after a game. "Don't die wondering boys if you have reach your full potential. Go for it". Hopefully the boys can take that on board and can end their junior careers on top of the mountain. Players · Max Abbott

BURNING BRIGHT - TIGERS OFF TO THE BIG DANCE AGAIN BY JULIAN PITTS The Rococo's Bar and Bistro Noosa Tigers have secured a grand final berth at Yeronga on Saturday 15 September after a super impressive victory over arch rivals Maroochydore at Fishermans road last weekend. Right from the start the pressure and attack on the footy from Noosa was just awesome in a game that featured much attack and was of a very high standard. Conditions were perfect for footy and that's exactly what the strong crowd was getting. Noosa took a 17 point margin in the opening break on the back of some well organised defence and a terrific opening stanza by coach Sammy Faure The Tigers received the spark they needed with Will O'Dwyer adding some real cleverness up forward as he booted two goals in the
quarter. The second quarter was all the tigers as big Liam Kenny began to make his mark on the game attacking everything in the air and even more importantly with his forward pressure as the ball was leaving the area. At half time it was noosa by 7 goals. Straight after the main break the defending premiers booted three goals in three minutes before the Tigers tackling pressure again shifted into top gear with Noosa's ball movement and kicking skill on show once again. Gun on-baller Tommy Templeton was having a profound influence up forward as was Connor McDonald as the Tigers took a 57 point lead into the last break. Eight goals to one in the final quarter had Maroochydore storming home against some tired and weary Tiger legs on a very warm day. However the Tigers held on to
book their place into a second consecutive grand final with an 11 point win. It was such a terrific team performance by the Noosa boys who I'm sure will use the week off to rest up before fronting up to either Maroochydore or Caloundra in the big one. Plenty of great players for the Tigers however full forward Liam Kenny (6 goals) was my standout. Tommy Templeton (4 goals) and Jai Fitzpatrick were very influential at crucial times whilst the running and pressure of Stack again was a highlight. As mentioned earlier senior coach Sammy Faure got belted from pillar to post but continued to put his head over the footy the entire day whilst Hill and Trompf 's experience to break even at least in the middle was more than important. Joel Lambourn, Jack Gleeson, Riley O'Dwyer
and Aaron Laskey mopped up everything all day to be all among the best with young Will O'Dwyer also terrific with his decision making and poise for a young player. Well done to all players: it was just awesome to watch. The Reserves also head to the big dance with an amazing second semi final victory over the much fancied Maroochydore Reserves. And don't forget our Colts who had a fantastic first semi final win in Brisbane last Saturday and front up in a preliminary for a chance to join the seniors on the big stage next week. All the best to our under 13 and 15 girls who play in grand finals at Maroochydore Friday night and also to our under 14 Division 1 boys who play in the grand final also at Maroochydore on Sunday. What a big couple of weeks for the Tigers, can't wait! ●

LIFE OF BRINE

NO RULES SURF ZONE The last time I was in Figueira Da Foz was 45 years ago and, if I'm not mistaken, there was a lot less of it. That's what I kept telling myself as I got hopelessly lost in a maze of cobblestoned back streets in the old town: it's not me, it's the place! It was the same driving through the high plains of Spain to get here. Relying on 15-year-old memories, I thought I'd drive straight to the beautiful old town of Salamanca, but they've built an ugly new town all around it, and it took two hours and a lot of cursing before I found somewhere to park the Fiat 500 and walk to our tiny hotel, just off the fabulous Plaza Mayor, with its vast spaces, 18th century baroque architecture and endless tapas bars. There are many such plazas in Spain, but Salamanca's is the most beautiful I have seen, and next time I hope I can remember where they hide it! We crossed into Portugal the next morning and drove through the high mountains that form the border, and immediately fell victim to another aspect of modernization - automatic toll collection. Yes, just like ours, except they don't go overboard in telling you how to pay. Okay, there may have been a small sign advising foreigners to pull over and register their cars, but the Fiat was moving so fast down the mountain that it was just a blur, and two visits to the post office, an on-line fail and a pathetic attempt to make a phone call in Portuguese later, I'm still none the wiser. Anyway, it doesn't matter because we're at the Gliding Barnacles Surf Festival where nothing matters. No rules, no heats, no schedule, everyone just goes surfing together and drops in endlessly, and drinks free beer on the beach. Oh, and every day they grill a million sardines on the plancha to be eaten whole with crusty bread, and every mouthful takes me back to our free camp by the rock wall at Peniche all those years ago, when we grilled and ate free sardines for three meals a day for a solid month. Ah Portugal, what's not to like? Gliding Barnacles is the hipster surf fest to top them all, and I don't mind admitting I'm a bit like a fish out of water. At least I have my Noosa beach mates Doc Bexon and Sam Crookshank here to share the beers and the general bemusement with the experience. The Barnacles have been gliding in Fig da Foz for five years or so now, courtesy of founder Eurico Goncalves,

Kapitan Madi and me and the event seems to have found a niche for itself in the curious world of alt.surf events that are not really contests at all but gatherings of the tribe. I'd like a buck for every hipster I've shaka'ed, bro-shaked and man-hugged since I've been here. We're all in love with surfing and each other, man, and we share the waves, like 20 of us at a time, and we jump on each other's boards and high-five each other as we fall into the water and let our heavy logs roll through the hordes of children splashing on the shore. God, it's fun! My cultural guide through all of this is the estimable Kapitan Jose Pedro Esteves Marcos, known as Madi.

Sammy C confessed to me this morning (read midday) that his eardrums couldn't go the distance. But it's morning now, and with a drop in decibels, we did make it through a good show at the garage, with a wine tasting and an exhibition of local artists. Sam won some money and plonked it on the bar, as you do on these occasions. Then we finished in the early hours drinking cognac at a street bar, watching the revelers still heading out for the all-night party. Today we point the Fiat south, headed for surf capital Peniche and more misty memories revived. If the liver holds out I'll report next week. ●

Madi has been a regular at the Noosa Surf Festival for several years now, and insisted that I join him at the Barnacles to experience a surf festival Portuguese style. Unfortunately, as guest head judge, I eliminated him from the final prize money cut this afternoon, so I guess I'm picking up the dinner tab, when we finally get there around 10pm, after several bar stops on the way. After that, no doubt Madi will try to drag us kicking and screaming into the Barnacles nightlife centre, which is a great space, a converted garage in the middle of town, unfortunately dominated by mega-decibel thrash Nordic punk bands. NOOSA SEAHORSE STRONG AS EVER On Noosas Main Beach early Saturday morning the tents went up, the beach was marked out and the volunteer red and yellow army of lifesavers once again assembled for what was to be the start of their sixth season of working for the members of the now famous Noosa Seahorse Nippers. It was in April 2013 that this organization under the leadership of Steve and Niki Mawby and their support team, undertook the challenge to give children with special needs the chance to enjoy what a lot of us take for granted. A morning of fun in the surf and sand of Noosa Beach. Once again the Noosa Shire Council gave their support by providing parking space near the club house thus making access to the beach easy for parents whose children require total support. Bus shuttle was again supplied for those parking in the adjacent Lions Park and all was under the guidance of lifesaving parking attendants. For the Seahorse Nippers their water activities were slightly restricted owing to the choppy sea conditions which saw their activities confined to a limited area; and as usual their games were under the strict supervision of qualified lifesavers. Once again that happy ever smiling individual wheel chair member Rohan McDonald, who has been a member since day 1, was again present. As the clubbies gathered to say hullo he informed them that he has also started to play wheel chair basketball. To be in the presence of this little man plus young Jack Gietel also a wheel chair member makes it all worthwhile. ''We are very happy with the way things are going and in particular with the continued support of the lifesavers, parents and local council," said Steve Mawby. "To make something like this succeed you have to have a great and dedicated support team and this is exactly what we have; people that are second to none. Today we have some 30 Seahorse members in attendance
Top job. and this Saturday another 4 are expected to join. Anyone who has just learned of our organization is most welcome this Saturday morning at 8am." With this being the 90th year of the Noosa Heads S.L.S.C. it is without a doubt one of the clubs greatest and proudest achievements; an organization which is no longer restricted to just Noosa but also to many other suitable beaches around Australia. Take a bow organisers and support team of the Noosa Seahorse Nippers -you have done us proud. Over the hill at Sunshine Beach Surf Club the planning process for the building of a new club is definitely in a positive state
Great day on the beach.
Riding it in.
of mind. If this trend continues and all goes well February will be the start of this major project so we now take this opportunity to wish the Sunshine team all the very best during the hard long hours ahead. Down at Peregian a Sunday morning
sign on for the restructure of the Peregian Nipper Club went well. We look forward to better things and happy times for this organization that is generally looked upon as a breeding ground for our lifesavers of tomorrow. â—?

OFFSHORE WINDOWS OVER THE WEEKEND The Noosa River has been really firing over the Father's day weekend, good numbers of quality whiting being taken on live worms and yabbies along Gympie Terrace and around the dog beach. Whiting have also been taken on surface poppers and walkers. The Frying Pan and the shallows of Weyba Creek are perfect places to try this technique. Heading up the river large flathead still dominate most reports with the mouth of the river performing well at the change of the tide. For good quality flathead try drifting lightly weighted baits like frogmouth pilchers and fresh mullet strips. Trevally are also feeding on small bait fish brought in on the tide. With the water being so clear fishing the low light periods is preferred. Mangrove jacks are starting to come on line with plenty of fish reported from around structure and up between the lakes. Trolling the area around Johns Landing has seen some good results. Jew fish numbers have been great in the river with plenty of fish on offer, most fish are noosatoday.com.au
under legal but still put up a great fight on light gear. Vibes and large paddle tail lures are perfect for the lure anglers while live baits have been the go for the bait anglers. There are still plenty of quality bream in the system with lightly weighted prawns and wriggles tail soft plastics claiming some nice fish, concentrate your efforts around structures to get the bigger fish. For those heading out to the beaches, there have been some lovely whiting coming from the gutters along the Noosa North Shore, fresh baits like sandworms, yabbies and pippies have been working well. Cast your bait to the back of the gutter and slowly roll it under the white water. There have been good quality tailor with the area from Teewah up to Double Island Point producing some great fish. Flathead have also been in good numbers in the gutters, small fish baits like prawns, white bait and hardy heads have claimed the better fish. On the offshore seen; The close in reefs like Sunshine have seen some quality trout,
sweetlip and venus tusk fish and snapper and as we say every week burley is key. Getting a good berley trail going will greatly improve your catch rate. Reports from North Reef has included some big sweetlip and the odd jew fish. Tuna have also been on the radar for most reefs where pilchard floaters and slugs have been working well. There was a bit of a weather window on Sunday that saw some of the bigger boats head a little further afield, Double island produced snapper, hussar, venus tusk fish, pearl perch, grass sweetlip and quality red emperor. The Hards also scored some quality reefies including bigger snapper cobia and pearl perch. The pelagic's season is just around the corner so now is the time to stock up that tackle box, slugs and stick baits have been very popular for the crew that love to chase the bait balls while diving lure are working well with the trollers. So on behalf of Jack Mangrove, best of luck on your fishing adventures! â—?
