“When a fit, healthy and energetic martial arts instructor forgets the names of his family and how to instruct his classes, alarm bells start ringing.“ “Then comes the dreaded diagnosis of a brain tumour with the words terminal cancer attached, and you suddenly find yourself on the hardest, most terrifying ride of your life, and all you long for is the train to STOP so you can all get off.” The precede from author Heather Roberts’ book All Aboard describes a journey of love, loss and peace. The book is about well-known Mount Evelyn martial artist, Kyoshi Andrew Roberts, who at age 53 died in his Lilydale home on Tuesday 22 November last year following a year-long battle with brain cancer. Written in a series of diary entries, it is a poignant look into the journey that Ms Roberts and her family underwent while caring for her husband. Ms Roberts said the book was a story of love and hope, and of a family uniting to keep their loved one at home where he belonged. “I thought it might make a good little book as a resource for people who are going through something similar, so they feel like they are not alone,” she said. “It’s about how we were losing him while he was still alive, and how we fought to keep him home as well.” Ms Roberts started writing the book when Andrew was diagnosed in June 2015 and she said reflecting and revisiting the diary was hard to do. “Sometimes I was strong enough to do it,” she said. “There were times, and probably two months ago I just went into a bit of a hole while finishing off. It got to me a bit, but it was also cathartic to look back upon it.” Since Andrew’s death, Ms Roberts has spent her time writing the book and co-ordinating the Kyoshi Andrew Roberts Foundation, which aims to help families who would like to bring their loved one home instead of spending their final days in a hospital. Families who bring their loved ones home might need shower rails, wheel chairs and hospital beds, which the foundation helps with. The money raised from the book will go to
SOCIALLY SPEAKING...
Career a happy accident Well, after the longest apprenticeship in history, I signed off on Friday 7 September after 20 years with the Mail. It was an accidental career in two parts the first with the marvellous Mardie Lambert from 1985 to 1994 with Mountain Views, and a return bout from 1998 to 2018 with Mail News Group. No-one was more surprised than I was when Mardie offered me a job at Mountain Views, or that her new editor, Veronica Groat, went along with it. As a quite talented stenographer/bookkeeper turned not-so-talented kiosk operator, it was an incredibly brave leap of faith on their part. I might have exaggerated my experience with a camera but, to be fair, the job description of " ... two or three days covering community news - babies, school news, events..." wasn't exactly how it panned out either. So, I think we're even. What a privilege it's been to share so many people's stories and their lives in so many different ways. I will be forever grateful for the trust that people have put in me to tell those stories. Some of it has been heart-breaking, a lot of it has been inspiring, bits of it have been just plain bizarre and some of it, I hope, has made a difference. In fact, I know it has made a difference, and that is rewarding. I've worked with some of the best people, and in a tough, fast-changing industry, some of the most dedicated and resilient - and funny (in lots of ways). And, I've been especially blessed to work with a generation (maybe two) of young journalists who have had to work so hard in a fiercely-competitive space to chase the career

The editor’s desk Kath Gannaway says her 20-year career in journalism was an accidental one. Her success in community news, though, has been no accident. She finished up with the Mail on Friday 7 September. Kath has been utterly dedicated to the community throughout her time reporting on the Yarra Valley, and the Yarra Ranges more widely. She shows genuine care and compassion for her readers, and does her best to assist them whenever possible. From promoting a fund-raiser for a cause to advocating for legislative change, Kath has done it all. She was awarded for a campaign in the Mail challenging family violence, back before the issue hit mainstream headlines. Kath

they aspired to. There have been times when I've pinched myself at my good fortune at working in such a beautiful environment as the Yarra Valley and among such genuinely beautiful people. I will miss so many aspects of my accidental job...but not the deadlines, and, not emails that don't have contact phone numbers on them! Just saying! Thank you for all the beautiful messages, and hugs I've received over the past week. - Kath Gannaway was instrumental in driving the series, and shared deeply personal stories with heart and determination. Awards aside, Kath has also seen results from her reporting. A well-written piece highlighting an issue can so often instigate change, sparking action where dormancy had set in. Her warmth and thirst for justice encouraged her interview subjects to open up on topics many journalists fear to even broach. Kath wore her heart on her sleeve and was never afraid to speak her mind, which also earned her a great deal of respect. While the Mail won't be the same without Kath, we will continue her community commitment. We're a small team with our readers at heart. We haven't had the time to foster quite as many community connections as Healesville-local Kath, but we're always happy to lend an ear, share successes and call for change. - Casey Neill

Top drop launched Mount Lilydale Mercy College students have launched their 2017 vintage. The secondary students produced the cabernet sauvignon reserve and unveiled the drop in the school's Centennial Hall on Friday 7 September. The McAuley Park cabernet sauvignon has a reserve title for the first time. Reserve wines are typically held back from general market release or given a higher price due to exception quality, considered better than the average vintage. The 40 students who created the wine took part in the launch, and other students provided the food, hospitality and entertainment. Students manage the vine canopy and check for pests, take yield estimates, monitor sugar, flavour and acid levels, harvest through the school holidays, bottle the wine and design the wine labels. The vineyard has been at the school for about 20 years, but this is the fourth year of the student-created wine program and the fourth vintage produced. The 226 plants on about half an acre in the school grounds yield about 300 bottles annually. Yering Station supports the project by supplying wine analysis and barrels. Its chief winemaker, Willy Lunn, hosts tours of Yering Station to link the students' classroom learning about biosecurity and the full winemaking process. The partnership has allowed students like Abigail Van Bergeijk to explore future careers while completing school. She's in Year 11 and works in Yering Station's cellar. "Motivated young people add energy to the industry," Mr Lunn said. "Investment in youth is a vital step for any

Ivy Ferguson-Mayer is another Year 11 student taking part in the program who has industry connections. Her parents operate Bloody Hill Wines in Healesville and her father, Timo Mayer, was once a winemaker for De Bortoli and Gembrook Hill. Ivy said she aspired to use what she'd learnt at the school farm, McAuley Park, beyond the
college, and enjoyed the teamwork. "Everyone gets excited and we are never short of a helping hand," she said. "From students, to teachers, even parents. It produces a great community." Mount Lilydale's wine won a bronze medal for its 2016 vintage at the Victorian Wine Show, up against more than 80 wineries. It also won bronze at the Eltham wine show, the largest amateur wine show in Victoria.
Police arrested three men following an alleged assault in East Melbourne that left a Mount Evelyn man in hospital. They said the 45-year-old and his friend, a 61-year-old Rosebud man, were walking along Wellington Parade about 12.10am on Thursday 6 September when three men approached. Police said the men were trying to catch a taxi home. They said a verbal altercation took place and the trio allegedly then physically assaulted the victims. Paramedics took both men to The Alfred hospital for treatment. Detective Senior Constable Ashlee Bull from Melbourne CIU said the Mount Evelyn man suffered a broken arm and facial injuries, and his friend had a fractured cheekbone and other facial injuries. Witnesses filmed the assault on mobile phones, and a passer-by helped the pair. Police released footage from the incident in the hopes of identifying those responsible. On Friday 9 September, they arrested a 27-year-old and 24-year-old, both from Fitzroy North, and a 27-year-old East Melbourne man.

Fighting plantar fascitis Plantar fascitis is a common and often disabling foot condition that affects many Australians, yet recent evidence shows increased hope for sufferers in the form of strengthening and postural and gait retraining. The plantar fascia is the strong connective tissue that makes up the arch of the foot and helps with the propulsion of walking and in shock absorption of the foot. Plantar fasciitis is an overload soft tissue disorder whereby increased load has been repetitively placed on the fascia. The condition has little or no inflammation and resembles the degenerative effects of chronic tendon damage (tendinosis), hence the name fasciosis being more widely and correctly used now. Typically, the condition affects women slightly more than men, and more commonly

Physiotherapist, Dandenong Ranges Physio, Olinda in the 45-64 age bracket, though it can occur in adults of any age. Risk factors of poor footwear, flat feet and running have been known for a while. More recent evidence tells us of the importance of general posture and stride length
as causative factors. Increased loading onto the ball of the foot (metatarsals) occurs when we stand in a hipsforward posture and when over-striding in walking or running. Both of these can and should be retrained in the early stages with simple cues, awareness and postural strengthening, particularly at the hip and pelvis. In addition to postural and stride retraining techniques, separate new research shows that strengthening of the calf and foot region, done in a specific and measured way, can have significant effects on pain and function in the three to 12 month stage of the injury, when it is generally at its worst and hardest to treat. A number of other modalities have been shown to offload the fascia and assist management: orthotics, footwear modification will
help, rest from or modifying weight-bearing activities. Other options can help some sufferers anecdotally but there is little evidence to support their use: ice, stretching, and passive stretching devices (socks or boots). Cortisone injection can help with shortterm pain relief in non-responders but is linked to tears or ruptures in chronic conditions, and surgery has poor results and is associated with poor short and long-term outcomes. This new evidence is particularly exciting for clinicians and sufferers alike and should drastically change how the condition is treated from now on, with more research needed about the combined effects of calf/foot strengthening with gait and postural retraining.

IN BRIEF Don’t leaf it too late
Stairway to funds By Derek Schlennstedt Ferntree Gully CFA raised $17,000 following the Melbourne Firefighters Stair Climb - $6000 more than their effort last year. The station raised the most in the state and received a trophy for its troubles. Twelve firefighters from the brigade signed up to climb 28 storeys at the Crown Metropol Hotel on 1 September to raise awareness for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) - the highest turnout of any brigade.
All money raised went to LifeLine and The Black Dog Institute. Ferntree Gully CFA Captain Seamus Smith said he was extremely proud of his members. “It was a super effort and we had a lot of good contributors who donated to us - we had people doing tin rattling down around the town and people were really generous,” he said. “We only had 11 who started on the day, but all 11 started and finished in good spirits and negotiated the stair climb successfully.
“PTSD, depression and suicide prevention is extremely important and as firefighters we work in quite a stressful environment. "These services that the climb raises funds for are amazing and it’s great that we can contribute to that and support the worthy cause.” Capt Smith said the members were committed to returning next year and raising even more money. “One hundred per cent, we are committed to coming back again next year and we’ll have another go,” he said.
Emerald leads solar race - buy a panel! The Emerald Village Bakery and Cafe is the seventh business in the town to install solar panels. Manager David Granieri said the main reasons for the move were to cut power bills and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Peter Cook from the Emerald-based Dandenong Ranges Renewable Energy Association (DRREA) said Vibe Fitness Gym in Emerald would soon follow suit. He said the group had been encouraging residents, community groups and business owners in Emerald to install solar since 2008 through its Emerald Going Solar program. "At least 478 buildings - mainly houses - have solar systems in the Emerald post code area," Mr Cook said. In another first for Emerald, its soonto-be-built community hub will have a charging station for two electric vehicles. "This means visitors to the town will be able to charge up while enjoying a stop in Emerald," Mr Cook said. Other Emerald businesses that have embraced solar include Emerald Co-op Mitre 10, Emerald Village Meats, Emerald Medical Centre, Emerald Produce, Emerald Fuels Plus and Emerald Custom Picture Framing.
Nominations for Cardinia Shire Council’s Significant Tree Register close on Tuesday 18 September. Anyone can nominate a tree of significance for inclusion on the register, which will help to protect them for the benefit of the environment and the enjoyment of the community. Nominated trees will be professionally assessed for their significance and value, and eligible trees will be added to a recommendation list, with the potential to be appropriately protected through the Cardinia Planning Scheme. Trees on private or public land may be nominated for historic, cultural, horticultural or aesthetic significance; for rarity, location or age; or for curious growth form or outstanding size. Nominations can be submitted at www.cardinia.vic.gov.au/TreeRegister.
Primary school break-in Police charged a Cockatoo man over a breakin at a local primary school last month. They alleged the 27-year-old man broke into a staff room at Gembrook Primary on Friday 24 August, but said he didn't steal any property. Police arrested him four days later and charged him with one count of burglary. He was bailed to appear at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 31 October.

Thieves stolen thousands of dollars in garden maintenance tools from the Yarra Ranges Council depot. Yarra Ranges CIU is investigating the 30 August break-in at the Nelson Road site. Detectives said the bandits entered through the rear of the property about 2am and broke into 10 vehicles. They piled leaf blowers, brush cutters, chainsaws and more into a trailer and fled along Trafalgar Crescent, towards Nelson Road. Police are appealing for witnesses who saw a car towing a trailer around that time to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

A safe roads boost Yarra Ranges Council will receive $684,900 to boost road safety at four intersections. The cash will come from the Federal Government's Black Spot Program 2018-'19 funding round. Projects at Lusatia Park Road in Woori Yallock and Myers Creek Road in Healesville will each receive about $280,000. About $50,000 will go towards improving Glasgow Road, Kilsyth, and $80,000 to The Crescent, Sassafras. Yarra Ranges Mayor Len Cox said these projects would reduce the likelihood of serious crashes and fatalities on Yarra Ranges roads. "The Black Spot program targets locations where crashes are taking place and allows local government to install traffic signals and roundabouts," he said. "Lives will potentially be saved and serious injuries and loss will be prevented as a result of improvements going ahead."
The council said 10 crashes, including five serious ones, took place on Myers Creek Road between 2012 and 2016. The crashes involved seven motorbikes and occurred during the day in dry weather. All motorbikes had left the road at bends, indicating that speeding might have been the dominant factor. The council said improvements would include guard railing, and sealing the section between the sealed and gravel roads, to reduce the risk of slipping on the bend. Speed limit and warning signage are already in place and clearly visible. Council will build guard railing at three locations along Lusatia Park Road, between Teeses Road and Eacotts Road, to stop cars from colliding with trees or power poles. During the same five-year period as above, five crashes occurred on this road, resulting in one fatality and three serious injuries.
Six crashes took place on The Crescent between Mount Dandenong Tourist Road and Perrins Creek Road in Kallista, including one fatality and three serious crashes. The council will install boundary measures, including raised reflective markers for night driving and guide posts, which aim to prevent motorists from leaving the lane and provide a greater opportunity to be aware of upcoming bends. Six crashes, including three serious ones, occurred on Glasgow Road between 2012 and 2016. They happened while it was raining, which the council said suggested low visibility for drivers entering the curve. The shire plans to install a skid-resistant overlay to the road, edge line marking, signage to ensure people are aware of the upcoming bend, and raised reflective markers. Visit investment.infrastructure.gov.au/ funding/blackspots/ to nominate a black spot.
Swap those yabby nets Recreational fishers with opera house nets can swap them for wildlife-friendly open-top lift nets free of charge at 45 tackle stores throughout Victoria. Agriculture Minister Jaala Pulford said the initiative would start on 7 September and would help to raise awareness of the impending ban on opera house nets in all waters from 1 July next year. The program makes it easy for thousands of keen yabby fishers to swap up to three opera house nets for three open-top nets. Opera house nets are associated with drowning wildlife such as platypus, turtles and native water rats, which can be avoided entire-
ly if open-top nets are used instead. Unlike opera house nets, open-top nets feature a 20 centimetre by 20cm gap at their top, which enables air-breathing animals such as turtles to escape. Victorian Fisheries Authority (VFA) research has shown open-top lift nets are very effective at catching yabbies. The VFA is distributing 10,000 open-top lift nets for the yabby net swap program and is encouraging people to take up the opportunity to swap their old nets before stocks run out. For more information including where to find participating tackle stories, visit vfa.vic. gov.au/yabbynetswap.
Reflecting on the past Knox Historical Society is releasing a new book to document its history through photos. Former MP Hurtle Lupton will launch Knox Reflections: A Pictorial History at Ferntree Gully Library on 13 October. KHS historical researcher Ray Peace compiled the book, which takes a look at how the district developed from a remote rural locality to the bustling urban municipality of today. “It’s taken near enough to a year to complete,” Mr Peace told the Mail. “I hope the book will bring pleasure to the people who see it and let them remember things that are no longer there. “It was very interesting because some things that used to be there, people had no idea about. “There used to be orchards in this area and now they are all gone.” The book features a number of before and after photos, and a rare colour photo from 1923. “We came up with a series of aerial photo of Knox in 1969 in colour - they went up in a light aircraft and took them so that was fantastic - and we have another photo from a photographer which was process-coloured and is from 1923. “It may be the oldest processed colour photo in Victoria.” Many of the photos have never been previously published, including historic colour photos and some line drawings. The book costs $19.95, plus $5 postage and handling. Visit www.khs-relics.com or call 9758 6722.

BEST PRICE, BEST TANKS WITH A LIFETIME GUARANTEE
12399357-RC38-18
Ring Terry Miller direct for the the best best prices prices
It’s time to catch it, order and build your concrete tank NOW!!!
Ph. 0260 267 021 Concrete tanks built correctly will last a life time! Terry Miller has been in the concrete tank building business for over 30 years. Being from country North East Victoria himself, Barnawartha, Terry realises the importance of good water storage systems. Concrete water tanks built correctly will last a lifetime. They keep your water cool, clean and algae free. This is because the tanks have 5-inch walls and a six-inch base, and are poured with 40-mpa strength concrete not 25 or 30 mpa. We also use plasticiser to keep up the strength in the tanks instead of water. And after 28 days curing the strength of the concrete will be between 48 and 52 mpa. And each tank is poured individually on site. These tanks come out white, which is a sign of the strength in the tanks. The MPA is a measure of how much concrete there is as parts per 1000. The walls of the tank are vibrated all around to ensure that there are no air bubbles and that the concrete is compacted down. Terry generally builds tanks in three sizes, 50,000, 105,000 and 120,000 either with a silo roof, concrete top or open top tanks. The tanks will not blow away or fall apart, and this is particularly important in areas where there is high wind, or fire prone districts. In the event of a fire, a large tank (120,000 litres) can supply water back up to the main house. By setting up a petrol powered generator and pumping water up onto the house directly, via a reverse water sprinkler system, homes can be kept cool and wet. Or if need be, the tank can be used as protection to keep cool from flames and radiant heat. Water is our most important resource, and we cannot have too much of it! So for all your water storage needs when you are thinking of installing your next tank, please call Terry for a quote on 1800 267 696 or check out our website, www.terrymillerconcretetanks.com.au. And in light of fire prone districts, we can highly recommend if you are considering your own on site water, choose a well constructed concrete water tank, as tin and plastic tanks will melt during fires!

A comedy about Claude Dandenong Ranges comedian Jess Pearman will debut her comedy show Patchouli at the Melbourne Fringe Festival. The 32-year-old will perform at the Highlander Bar on 14 and 15 September alongside other Melbourne-based comedians. Ms Pearman has been doing stand-up comedy for three years and frequently performs at venues around the hills. She also runs her own open mic comedy night every second Sunday at the Whole Lotta Love bar in Brunswick. Ms Pearman said she'd always been a bit of a class clown and described her act as traversing a range of topics with tongue-in-cheek wit. “There are lots of hypothetical situations...I like talking about psychology, and idiosyncrasies and things that people do when they don’t know they’re doing it,” she said. One of those tongue-in-cheek topics is Jean Claude Van Damme. “One of the first jokes I wrote was this fantasy - it’s a naughty fantasy with Jean Claude and ended up becoming an ongoing thing,” she said. “I guess I’m the comedian who has a crush on Jean Claude, but the '90s version." Ms Pearman said that "if you like jokes that explore gender stereotypes, small-town social dynamics and detailed fantasies about Jean Claude Van Damme, come and see the show". Visit www.freecomedy.com.au for more information. The Melbourne Fringe Festival runs from 13 to 30 September. Question of peace occupies church By Lindy Schneider The Tecoma Uniting Church (TUC) will hold a mini-festival called Can we Make Peace? on Saturday 22 September from 1pm. The event on International World Day of Peace is a first for the TUC, which hopes to make it a regular feature of its community outreach and social justice program. The festival is open to all members of the community. "The festival has been developed in response to requests from the broader Tecoma community," church committee member Shakti McLaren said.
Activities on the day will include a 90-minute Q and A panel on the question 'How can we make peace?' Paul O'Halloran will moderate the debate between a range of community members representing diverse religious and social groups. Kids activities with local artist Joy Serwylo will include art-making, treasure hunts and other peaceful activities. Throughout the church and gardens there will be five-minute meditations, crystal bowl sessions and garden walks. Peace-themed short documentaries will be shown in the chapel and a peace choir, led by
Barbara McFarlane of Vokallista, will be performing. Afternoon tea will also be served. "We want people to leave after the closing ceremony with their questions answered, a deeper understanding and a sense of hope," Ms McLaren said. The organising group said: "We hope this is the beginning of many great forums and events in TUC that will be both thought-provoking and edgy." The TUC is at 1566 Burwood Highway, Tecoma. A $5 donation is requested for entry to Can we Make Peace?

Free workshops to help our aspiring musicians
The Wife Starring Glenn Close and Johnathan Pryce Rated M
The Push and Music Victoria have announced a series of free regional music industry workshops, including one for Upwey. This Must Be the Place events aim to provide musicians and their communities with tools and valuable information on social media and online music streaming, and feature music industry representatives from Parlour, Bolster, The Push and Music Victoria. The Skylark Room will host a workshop on 1 October featuring two separate interactive presentations. The Push CEO Kate Duncan said the workshops were there to educate up-and-coming musicians about effective marketing. “The way in which artists are able to use data
Adapted from the novel by Meg Wolitzer, The Wife is a quietly harrowing film that shines a stark spotlight on unequal relationships. In 1992, Joan Castleman (Glenn Close) finds herself reevaluating her unfulfilling life, as a wife and muse, after her egocentric husband Joe Castleman (Johnathan Pryce) is awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. The Wife may be one of the purest examples I've seen of suspense derived solely from character, powerful acting and tight direction. Close delivers a career-best performance of solemn, dignified melancholy tinged with wry humour. You feel her repressed resentment rise to the surface, as the adulation lavished upon Joe in Stockholm highlights how much

to tour directly to where their fans are situated, as well as engaging and building relationships with audiences through online platforms, is something we as a broader industry need to be supporting professional development and a greater understanding of,” she said. “These workshops will provide artists with a practical insight into this ever-evolving digital landscape.” Ms Duncan said the workshops were a rare and exciting opportunity for like-minded individuals from the music community to come together and learn about ways to reach and engage directly with their own fans. Artist Khristian Mizzi will host the Upwey event. Visit musicvictoria.com.au for more information or to book.
Local Jesss Pearman will be debuting her comedy show Patchouli at the Highlander Bar on 14 and 15 September.
Joan has stifled and suppressed herself in service of Joe's life and career. Joe seems like an affable, doddering figure, but as the film progresses, you are shocked at his multiplying acts of carelessness toward Joan and their son David (Max Irons). As these microaggressions mount in the present, steady flashbacks (featuring Annie Starke, Close's daughter, as young Joan) further illustrate Joe's controlling nature and the unbalanced power dynamic their relationship has always contained. These flashbacks seed a twist that is both grimly unsurprising and deeply shocking. The Wife is a masterfully-crafted and searingly-relevant drama about the toxic foundation behind so many loving relationships. - Seth Lukas Hynes Tuesday, 11 September, 2018

The first quarter was tough, with neither side able to kick a goal. They both kicked three in the second but the advantage was Wandin's, by five points. Olinda took control in the third and led by nine points at the final change. Wandin really turned up the burners in the last and held Olinda to just one goal, but kicked six themselves. Gembrook came out a different side in the third, and Yarra Glen went missing as Gembrook kicked six goals to one to reduce the margin to seven points as they headed for home. Lauren Bennett put up 25 goals in her side's win against Wandin. Pictures: BETHANY HUTCHISON They await the result of the game between Yarra Glen and Seville next week. The first was an even hit-out with both sides kicking four goals, but Junction had their noses in front by one point at quarter time. Co-ordinator Greg Moody puts a record number of potential players through their paces at Monbulk Rangers Goalkick sessions.
Future soccer stars shine By Judy Kennedy The future of Monbulk Rangers Soccer Club looks to be in good hands if the record numbers attending this season's Goalkick program are any indication. Co-ordinator Greg Moody said a record 33 children aged from five to seven years registered for 10 weeks of Goalkick, with many expected to return to the club for the Summer
Round Robin series starting in early October. Goalkick is designed to prepare the young players to enter competition in under-8 teams in 2019, with several Monbulk Rangers senior players teaching skills and drills to the youngsters. "This winter we started 35 players in four under-8 teams in the Victorian Churches Football Association (VCFA) competition and having done Goalkick in 2017, they were well-
prepared for match play," Moody said. "Another positive is having the older junior girls and boys helping me with the clinic, which shows the little ones what they can achieve if they play for Monbulk." The club registered 596 players this season and expects this number to grow again in next year as families flock to the new $10 million club complex with two synthetic pitches. The success of Monbulk's senior men's
team will further boost its reputation, after they finished the season with an exciting 3-3 draw against Middle Park FC on Saturday 8 September, giving them a promotion to State League Division 2 next year. A large crowd turned out at the pitch to celebrate goalkeeper David Milne's last game for the club and he didn't disappoint, with a thrilling save in injury-time before being chaired off by his team mates.

Car raffle a funds drive By Kath Gannaway Vicki Harrison, like many people, is always willing to support a local charity raffle but sees it as a donation rather than a chance to win ... in this case, A NEW CAR! Vicki, the long-time co-ordinator of Seville Community House, was astounded when she received a phone call to tell her she was the winner of the Great Community Raffle 2018 and the new owner of a $30,000 Holden Equinox. "It still doesn't feel real," she said of her good luck. The raffle is run by the Rotary Club of Emerald and Ferntree Gully Motor Group which comprises Nissan, Volkswagen, Holden, Suzuki, Isuzu and LDV dealerships along the Burwood Highway in Ferntree Gully. Over the past eight years the raffle has raised $1,388,000, including $177,696 this year, benefiting 115 organisations including primary schools, sports clubs and community groups. The Ferntree Gully Motor Group finances the while package - car, on-road costs and printing of the raffle tickets - with 100 per cent of the proceeds going to the organisations that sell the $2 tickets. Vicki said she was astounded when she got the call telling her she had won first prize. "This is the third year we've participated and it's a pretty hard sell up here, so ultimately our committee members and myself buy most of the tickets," she said, adding it was a better option than doing a chocolate drive and eating all the chocolates yourself! She said for smaller groups in particular the raffle was a fantastic opportunity with the car dealerships covering everything and Rotary Club members doing all the legwork delivering and picking up tickets, making it a

"They bend over backwards to make sure the process is smooth and easy," Vicki said. "A lot of community groups don't have lots of paid staff and run on a small volunteer base and Rotary just make it doable, along with the generosity of the dealerships which is an ex-
traordinary contribution. Wandin Rotary help out with the Yarra Valley groups including a number of schools from Dixons Creek through to Yarra Junction and the Joy Avenue Kindergarten in Mount Evelyn. Emerald organisations include fire brigades and SES, and schools, sporting and commu-
nity groups across the Dandenong Ranges. Emerald Rotarian Lorna Shaw said the raffle would not be possible without the generosity of the Ferntree Gully Motor Group who she said also sponsor local junior sport in the area. "We couldn't do it without them; they are very community-minded," she said.
Making young drivers safer There are interactive learning studios so they can complete practical tasks that link with their health and science curriculums. Students in Years 9 and 10 will start visiting the Road to Zero in term four, with more than 20,000 students expected to flock to the complex in its first year. A regional outreach program will ensure students across the state who are unable to access the complex in Melbourne don't miss out. Road to Zero is the cornerstone of State Government's $146 million Young Driver Safety Package, which aims to reduce road trauma among young people and cement Victoria as a leader in road safety education. The TAC developed the complex in partnership with Museums Victoria and co-designed it with road safety and teaching experts. "The earlier we can start a conversation around road safety - in classrooms, on-road or amongst friends and family - the better equipped young Victorians will be to drive

TAC CEO Joe Calafiore said young drivers in Victoria were almost four times more likely to be involved in a fatal or serious injury crash during their first year of driving than more experienced drivers.

Victorian students will start their journey to becoming safer drivers well before they hit the road. Roads and Road Safety Minister Luke Donnellan joined the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) and Museums Victoria to officially open the $55 million Road to Zero Education Complex at the Melbourne Museum on 28 August. Young people are some of Victoria's most vulnerable road users so it's critical to find new ways to get them thinking about safety before getting their licence. TAC research showed drivers aged 18 to 25 accounted for 24 per cent of deaths on Victoria's roads last year. The complex will feature the latest in visual and digital technology to help students and the wider community understand their own vulnerability, the role of speed in crashes and the importance of safer vehicles. It's designed to make sure students don't feel like they're stuck in a classroom.
