MORE TO LOVE The editor’s desk Finally the people of Peregian Beach have been given some resolution on the future of its surf club after negotiations last week resulted in Surf Life Saving Queensland taking on the lease and responsibility for its ongoing operations. While the surf club enters this new chapter in its operations they have reached this point only thanks to the assistance given by Noosa Heads SLSC who supported Peregian Beach both financially and operationally and are continuing to offer help. It's a top effort from NHSLSC which this weekend celebrates its 90th anniversary. Also happening this week in Peregian Beach was a workshop on innovative ways to initiate employment and careers for local youth sponsored by Noosa MP Sandy Bolton and attracting the attention of Innovation and Tourism Minister Kate Jones. Looking outside the box to find a solution for a longterm problem in the area is worthy of our attention. ●

IT'S UNCANNY 80s pop/rock sensation Uncanny X-Men original lineup reunite, on their 'Cos Life Still Hurts', national tour from September, 2018. They can't wait to get back on the road and perform for their loyal fans and play their chart-topping album 'Cos Life Hurst' Cover to Cover! The idea was spawned from a one-off performance back in March, when they realised the magic was still there and, it was like they had never stopped performing together. Back in the 80's there wasn't a pop/rock radio station that didn't play there smash charting hits '50 Years', 'Everybody Wants To Work' and 'Party'. No. 3 ARIA charting album 'Cos Life Hurts' reached double platinum and 'What You Give Is What You Get' went Gold, cementing them on the pub rock scene. We have a double pass up for grabs to see this iconic Aussie band play at the V Room, Villa Noosa on 29 September at 8pm. 90 YEARS OF THE SAFEST SWIMMING FOR NOOSA

PAVING THE WAY FOR YOUTH

BY HOLLIE HARRIS

Innovation and Tourism Minister Kate Jones dropped into the Peregian Beach Digital Hub on Tuesday to hear from local leaders on their innovative approach to solving the issue of local youth unemployment. In a pilot project local leaders were brought together to develop their ideas in a one-day workshop and forum during which they were tasked with designing solutions to the issue and pitching a solution to the Minister later the same day. "This pilot is about the process of designing solutions, and delivering on them. I am honoured to have so many 'game changers' from Noosa and the wider region come together and give of their time and knowledge to utilize this process to help us solve a critical issue - ensuring our youth have clear pathways and future job and career prospects in our major and emerging industries," Ms Bolton said. Ms Bolton said the complex issue required multiple contributors and the solution would require multiple components. "This pilot and the ensuing actions will provide a working template for Noosa to tackle other issues - as well the opportunity to refine the process along the way," she said. "By having the Minister for Innovation and Tourism present we can demonstrate first-hand how innovation is much broader than often perceived. 'Outside the box' thinking and human-centred design processes can connect the dots to deliver real outcomes for communities, as well as government." She was pleased the Minister was available to offer feedback on the outcome of the workshop and potential funding. Ms Jones also spent her visit testing a solar powered bike with local business Ecotekk and lunch where Tourism Noosa executives and Mayor Tony Wellington discussed future tourism events. ●

This weekend, the Noosa Surf Lifesaving Club will celebrate nine decades of service. Protecting our beaches and keeping swimmers safe for 90 years is milestone Noosa lifesavers can really rest their cap on. With a brand new refurbishment to show off, the Surf Club will come alive from Friday evening for a general get together, followed by a the Seahorse Nippers program on the beach on Saturday morning and a sand sculpting competition for children 5-10 years and then 10 years and over will be judged by highly acclaimed sand artist Dennis Massoud. Sunday will kick off with former Aussie Champion Surf Lifesaver, Darren Mercer will host a range of rescue demonstrations, water displays and various surf sports from 9-10.30am. Be sure to witness the full march-past at 10.30am when, in a rare event, the senior team and two nippers teams will join together to march the beach. BATON PASSES AT PEREGIAN BEACH SURF CLUB Surf Life Saving Queensland Sunshine Coast branch has taken over the lease of Peregian Beach Surf Club from Noosa Heads SLSC and have vowed to work with residents on the future of the club. The decision was reached following a meeting last Wednesday between SLSQ, Noosa Heads SLSC, SLSQ Sunshine Coast Branch and Noosa Council. Noosa Mayor Tony Wellington said SLSQ were committed to using the existing building which is intended for surf life saving activities. Noosa Heads SLSC will provide a volunteer patrol service at Peregian on weekends and public holidays for the forthcoming patrol season under the oversight of SLSQ. SLSQ's professional lifeguards will continue their mid-week and winter service, ensuring the popular beach remains patrolled 365 days of the year. In addition, a dedicated Nippers program will be launched and based at Peregian this season, along with increased opportunities for community volunteers to patrol the beach. SLSQ CEO John Brennan said the

organisation's key priority was the safety and wellbeing of beachgoers. "Importantly, this outcome will ensure that a high level of beach safety will continue for many years to come," he said. NHSLSC president Ross Fisher said it was an ideal situation for everybody. "It's fantastic the governing body will take over.

It bodes well for the future," he said. Cr Wellington said the outcome of the negotiations ensured that the Peregian community could be involved in the future direction of the club. "In the long term, what we all want to see is a local club operated with local input," he said. "Now that the issue of the building tenure is resolved, Council can proceed with undertaking emerging maintenance work on the building. "From Council's point of view, this is a new era for surf lifesaving at Peregian Beach. Council has an excellent working relationship with SLSQ, and we feel confident that the new lease arrangement will see the existing building utilised in ways that genuinely suit the residents of Peregian Beach." He said the lease arrangements of the surf club were still being negotiated but the tenure was likely to be for a few years. Volunteer surf lifesavers will return to the beach on Saturday 22 September when the summer season officially kicks off. ●

COVER STORY A 300-ton natural coloured sand sculpture in China.

Victory against Noosa National Park development.

ENTER THE SAND MAN BY MARGARET MACCOLL

H

e's regularly mistaken for rock star Alice Cooper and his life story reads like a movie script but master sculptor Dennis Massoud is

a Noosa icon. Growing up Dennis Massoud lived an idyllic childhood filled with music and the freedom to explore his environment. "The Massoud family pioneered tourism in the region," Dennis said. They ran coloured sands tours to Rainbow Beach, fishing charters and operated Maisies cafe on Gympie Terrace in Noosaville. The extended family lived on land between Gympie Terrace and Elizabeth Street. In the middle of the compound was a big family home that served as a common space and also a hostel for guests. During the day there was fishing and adventure with his siblings and cousins and there was plenty of good food and music.

One of his uncles was a trained opera singer, another made musical instruments and built Dennis his own fishing boat. "The Massoud family home was an entertainment hub in Noosaville," he said. "I have a lot of happy memories from it. It was so quiet and beautiful here then. "At the river front jetty we used to lie on our stomachs on the jetty and look at the butter bream and trumpeter fish swimming underneath. I used to carry an oyster knife. While we waited for the bus to school we'd peel off the oysters." "Michael, Peter and myself - we were a deadly trio," he said. "We got into a lot of trouble." The boys built themselves a tree house on the Noosa Sound Island, now Witta Circle, where they would chase black bream into the mangroves that grew around it and catch them in their bare hands. "When we were children we were hunters," he said.

Dennis was one of the youngest people in Queensland at the time to possess a commercial fishing license and regularly fished with his father. But by the age of 17 he had rethought his life, gave up fishing and hunting, got rid of his weapons and became a vegan. After his father's death the family property was sold and the Colonial Resort now occupies the land where the family home once sat. "In the 70s I would visit people's houses and see windows and French doors recycled from the house," he said. After finishing school Dennis moved to Brisbane to study photography. As an A-grade photographer he worked for a company based at West End shooting aerial, commercial, industrial and school photography. The company employed eight photographers and had 20 staff including his sister Lyn who he described as the glue that held it together.

But Dennis didn't like the Brisbane life and returned to Noosa where he took up a building apprenticeship, putting in his time largely at Little Cove working on a number of architecturally designed residences. A stint in Papua New Guinea to do some voluntary work was cut short when he contracted malaria which left him suffering malaria flashbacks for the next 23 years. Back in Australia Dennis immersed himself again in the photography business, with other family members. He was working seven days a week when one day he realized he was missing his family and the life of his three-year-old son Luke. From then he vowed to spend the weekends doing whatever Luke wanted. As luck would have it Luke just wanted to go to the beach and make sand castles. This father and son activity continued until Luke was about 17 years old and the sand sculptures improved over time and attracted growing public attention.

A plane filled with passengers for Qantas.

David in sand. The 1970s was a time noted for its public protests and government corruption. The Queensland Premier was Sir Joh Bjelke Petersen was vehemently opposed to protests and street marches. Protests against the Vietnam War, uranium mining and the right to protest became commonplace and ended often with violent clashes with police tasked with halting them. This social movement activity spread and resulted in many reforms in society and politics. The environment movement won many victories especially in the area of nature conservation and Dennis was right behind it. When the government decided to allow a large development at Noosa Heads National Park he headed up a local group to oppose the move as many people did in the region. Calling themselves the Noosa National Park team they obtained signatures on petitions and made their protest known to the Minister of Environment. New members had to don a sandwich board and walk up and down Hastings Street for two weeks to raise awareness of the project and to collect signatures, he said. His actions resulted in death threats forcing out of his home and costing him his marriage, he said. There have been a few setbacks in his life including several serious accidents over which he has prevailed. He fractured vertebrae in his neck when a desk fell on him but recovered through exercise and determination. He was the victim of a serious head on crash while in driving a car with his son Finn which left him with numerous broken bones and other injuries.

Luckily his last-minute swerving to the left saved Finn who suffered only minor injuries. The photography business went bankrupt due to poor financial decisions out of his control. So, Dennis decided to take up sand sculpture full time. One day a French woman approached him at the beach to see if he'd like to enter an international sand sculpting competition in California. He didn't think much of it at the time but a couple of weeks later she returned with airfares and accommodation and entry to the competition in San Diego. When he arrived he discovered a very different type of sculpture - one using 150 ton of sand for an 8-storey creation involving concrete and road compactors. "I'd never seen anything like it," he said. There were 14 in the competition representing countries around the world. The theme was California Dreaming. "They said there's your pile. You could walk on every level. I thought this group is going to laugh at me. I don't know what to do. I'm out of my depth. I started from the top down. I just watched what everyone else was doing. "I carved spiraling dolphins, two mermaids and a woman praying. We had seven days to create the sculpture. I came sixth out of 14. They were carrying me on their shoulders. I said what are you doing I didn't win. They told me they needed someone from the southern hemisphere to be an international competition. Normally you need six years experience to do that type of sculpture. They said people had been betting heavily on me. A lot of money

Sketch She. was bet on whether you'd give up, whether you'd come last, they said." For seven years after that Dennis travelled the world in countries including China, Holland and Denmark, competing in sand sculpture. He returned to Noosa and his sculpture became popular in Asia and Australia where he continues to work widely, mainly in the corporate world. Dennis has built sculptures for Google, Microsoft, Qantas, Telstra. In October he will create a sculpture for the National Portrait Gallery. He remains a staunch advocate for Noosa National Park and is concerned about the effects of increasing visitor numbers and vandalism including graffiti and the moving

of rocks. He said the fairy pools have become polluted and destroyed by overuse with about 80 per cent of soft coral dead. "It's a privilege to enter a national park," he said. "There's a need for more national parks. People are going to be faced with more development from the Gold Coast to Noosa. If they don't have release cells like national parks their lives are not going to be worth living. Noosa is unique because of the people who stood up for it in the 70s, 80s and 90s against corruption and wanting a decent lifestyle." Dennis can be seen this Saturday leading sand sculptures workshops at Noosa Main Beach as part of the Noosa Heads Surf Life Saving Club's 90th anniversary celebrations. WALKING FOOTBALL ARRIVES IN NOOSA BY THE BOOTLOAD Older people in Australia and overseas are taking to the field with a version of soccer that suits them walking football - and it's about to take off in Noosa. Walking football organiser Dom Massoni believes this new sport will be a big hit with the area's active retirees. Walking football is exactly as the name suggests, he said. There are six players a side, 20-minute halves and no physical contact. It's played on a smaller than standard soccer field or indoor court and players (men and women) walk instead of run. The emphasis is on getting active and having fun and its popularity in

Australia is expected to follow the United Kingdom which already has 800 clubs. After launching pilot programs Football NSW now has more than 7000 registered players. The sport began in Brisbane in January this year and has already attracted 65 participants. Dom said the game would suit both older players who have given up the game or novices who want to give it a try. He plans to set up teams in age groups over 40, 50 and 60s and games can be organised at times to suit participants. Getting older does not mean you have to stop doing the things

Dom Massoni wants people to join in walking football.

you love. And health experts say sports such as this, which build fitness and balance, can actually help prevent chronic illnesses, injuries and even dementia. As well as better health walking football is a social game, where participants can meet new people and avoid isolation, Dom said. TIGERS SET FOR FINAL - VERSUS ARCH RIVAL MAROOCHYDORE BY JULIAN PITTS The Rococo’s Bar and Bistro Noosa Tigers play arch rival Maroochydore in the Hart Sport QFA Division 1 Grand Final at Yeronga this Saturday. Whilst the Noosa side had the advantage of a bye last weekend following their stirring second semi final win, the defending champions Maroochydore were far too good for Caloundra in last weekend’s preliminary final. The Tigers had a light training run last Saturday before heading down to watch the preliminary final and venture into the big dance at full strength. A huge crowd will be down at Weyba road tonight to watch our

premiership hopefuls go through their paces prior to the big day. Tonight also coincides with our junior presentation night so plenty going on at Tigerland. The senior team seems very settled with only footy manager Mitch Woods’ inclusion a certainty after missing the major semi with general soreness. Woods is definitely one of several key Tigers who will be looking to perform well after another very consistent year. Noosa will again look to the class of blokes like Laskey, Stack, Templeton and Fitzpatrick to bring home the holy grail whilst the guile and competitiveness of Trompf, Hill and power forward Kenny will hopefully again expose the 2017 premiers. But most of all it

will be the team first and ‘in your face attitude’ Noosa showed two weeks ago that will go a long way to bringing home the bacon. It was manic pressure at its best and expect nothing else this Saturday. The reserve grade also host the Maroochydore Roos in their grand final so a massive day for our footy club. The Reserves boast legendary tiger names like Bovalino, Duke, Isles, Wallace and Winter with hopefully a few Colts rising stars in Maher, Mckenzie and Pettigrove to add to a very formidable outfit. All the best to all involved! Supporter bus information can be found on the Noosa Tigers website or ring footy manager Mitch Woods at the club.

Commiserations to our brave and gutsy Under 18/Colts who lost their preliminary final last Saturday on the Gold Coast. With limited numbers due to several serious injuries, the players performed bravely with our future looking really promising. Also bad luck to our Under 14 Divison 1 boys and Under 13 girls who both lost their grand finals last weekend but a big congratulations to our Under 15 youth girls who again delivered on the big stage to make it back-to-back flags and produce an outstanding brand of girls footy on the biggest day! Go tigers ! ●

REMEMBERING WWI’S 100TH

CLEAN UP REWARDED

BY WENDY BIRRELL From 1914 to 1918 when Eumundi and the surrounding area was just starting to develop and had a population of around 500, 104 local men enrolled to fight for King and country in WW1. Of those men, 20 did not return and Eumundi's Main Street (now Memorial Drive) and Gridley Street was planted with 20 Memorial Trees each with a plaque which remain to this day to remember them. This year will see the 100th Anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended WW1 on November 11, 1918 at 11am. Remembrance Day will be commemorated by the Eumundi Historical Association in a number of ways before and on the date including a supper dance reminiscent of the WW1 era. Back in 1918 Eumundi had a 'Welcome Home Committee' that held many social functions in the School of Arts hall in honour of local returned soldiers. Many of the returning soldiers took over a year to finally make their way home, and the welcome home functions continued until the end of 1919. In the spirit of the 'Welcome Home Committee' in commemorating and celebrating the return of the 84 who survived the war, with many returning to Eumundi, and to mark the 100th anniversary of the Armistice, the Eumundi Historical Association felt it only fitting to honour these men again with a Supper Dance in the

Eumundi School of Arts. heritage listed School of Arts hall. The Eumundi School of Arts hall now in its 106th year played a pivotal part in Eumundi's participation in WW1, with many events held in the hall to raise money for the 'war effort' and the WW1 Roll of Honour still takes pride of place in the hall, by the stage for all to see. The Eumundi Historical Association, which is the trustee of the hall for the community, has recently undertaken some major renovations of the hall. With it looking its best, the Association president Donata Page believes 'it's time to put on a get together, to not only honour those who returned from WW1, but to also honour the hall, which over its many years has weathered many storms and still remains'. Polish up your dancing shoes and bring out your glad rags to enjoy what promises

to be a great evening with some nostalgic old time melodies from the 10 piece Pete Kelly Swing Band, ably supported by singers Melissa Isles and Carl Beck and a fabulous supper is planned by chef Peter Wolfe of Free Ranging Chef included in the ticket price. Tickets for the Welcome Home Remembrance Supper Dance to be held at the Eumundi School of Arts on Saturday 13 October are $40 early bird until 24 September and $50 after this date, includes supper and entertainment There will be a licenced bar. Surfrider Foundation Sunshine Coast has hit on a winning way to clean up Peregian Beach and reward participants by hosting the event prior to the Peregian's Originals music session held on the second Sunday of the month. Last Sunday a group of people collected about a dozen bags of rubbish from the beach and sand dunes area at Peregian Beach. Michelle Previti and her son Liam went along and brought with them a number of international students from Lexis English Noosa to help out. Michelle said cigarette butts and empty bottles scattered about the dunes made up the bulk of their rubbish find. She said the group aimed to share the conservation work with students who could in turn share information about environmental practices in their countries. ●

THE LOWDOWN

FOOD AND FASHION A WINNING MATCH A bit of rain did nothing to dampen what was a fantastic Food and Fashion event at Peregian Village last week. The annual show organized this year by a committee led by local dynamo Robyn Walter of Peregian Beach Business Association brings the village together to showcase its spectacular food and fashion. Committee member Janelle Leaman of Pink Lotus said it was also a social occasion for a number of residents who arrange to meet annually at the event. Janelle said everyone in the village pulled together to set up for the event and make it happen. With a bit of rearranging the models were able to showcase the fashions between rain showers and everyone was kept dry, she said. "We were really happy with the numbers," she said. "It was a wonderful day." This year for the first time the event went plastic free and everyone took home a souvenir drink container. â—?

GREEN TICK FOR FOOD AND WINE FESTIVAL From a roving team of Waste Warriors to clever collaborations with eco-friendly suppliers, 2018 was a standout year for the Noosa Food & Wine Festival for its green initiatives. This year the Festival run by Tourism Noosa invested in and delivered green initiatives that will now provide a blueprint for other festivals in Noosa wanting to be eco-friendly and significantly reduce their environmental footprint. Through the implementation of these green initiatives 18.3-tonnes of waste was recycled and composted, saving 15-tonnes of general waste. This is the equivalent of more than half the waste being recycled. To achieve these impressive results, the Festival partnered with Plastic Free Noosa to introduce a roving team of Waste Warriors, who worked hard to sort the rubbish into compostable and general waste to ensure best practice in waste disposal. Festival director Alesha Gooderham said respecting the environment was a core value of the Festival and green initiatives were an important part of operations and planning. "We will continue to work with Plastic Free Noosa and share our learnings to support other Noosa events," she said. Initiatives instigated throughout the festival included a ban on plastic straws throughout the Festival Village which was supported by a social media campaign called "Sip Don't Suck" promoting a straw-free festival. Alesha said every exhibitor in the Festival Village was provided with a guideline of fully compostable products for use on their stall. From

Chef Matt Golinski cooks at the festival village. food containers to napkins and service cutlery, the festival team negotiated a special exhibitor rate on supplies to encourage and support the switch to fully bio-degradable items. A team of volunteer Waste Warriors were on hand throughout the Festival, stationed at the 30 bins to help educate visitors on how best to dispose of their waste. This initiative was combined with a dedicated back-of-house area where staff could sort rubbish by hand to limit contamination of compostable waste. The festival also invested in 12,000 recyclable, polycarbonate glasses to remove single-use plastic glassware and a cashless payment system was introduced to remove paper ticket stubs.

Chef Miguel Maestre at the Food and Wine Festival Village. The effects of the green focus and the relationships built throughout the festival have been ongoing with venues such as Bistro C determined to extend their commitment to reducing waste. When the restaurant recently closed for refurbishment, Bistro C's fresh ingredients were donated to OzHarvest. OzHarvest's Michele Lipner said the

donation was due to "a great partnership with great results". "Noosa Food & Wine 2018 may be over, but it's a gift ... that keeps giving," she said. Michele highlighted fundraising efforts from Bistro C and also Wasabi Restaurant and Bar, saying their valuable contribution means OzHarvest have been able to deliver almost 10,000 meals to people in need. ●

NOOSA SHOWS ITS COUNTRY SIDE BY MARGARET MACCOLL It was a stunning half dozen eggs that earned Noosa District State High School first prize in the best egg section at this year's Noosa Country Show. Round at the bottom, pointy at the top, consistent in colour, size and shape, and absolutely egg-like. As the crowds built on show day judging was in full swing Friday morning. The cooking, art, crafts and produce had been decided early but the pets and farm animals were being put through their paces for the hotly contested awards. In the dog tents Maria was teasing Lennon's hair into a favourable buffon in readiness for his showing. The old English Sheepdog which was both an American and Australian grand champion and whose show name was Wynsilot n Larame Come Together, was lapping up the attention. Erica Lestin's pup Goldie was very excited to be at the show while Airedale Terrier, Archer, looked like an old hand, sitting quietly for a brush up. Weighing in at 28 kg a seven-month-old British Bulldog was a newcomer to the show world, while Amanda Cooney expected big things from her Petit bassett griffon bendeen name Piper whose uncle recently won best in show at the Brisbane Ekka. By far the horses were the dominant animal at the show. The ring was filled with a variety of breeds from the very small to the large and some temperamental. Chief horse steward Christine Allen said judges were looking for a good example of its type when they surveyed the breed as well as good manners. She said the Noosa show brought in horses every bit as good as those seen at the Royal Brisbane Show and there were also categories for harness, riding, hacking and showjumping. "People love it," she said. One of the more unusual breeds was an Icelandic horse imported by Estelle Hobbins from New Zealand. With a wonderful temperament and with multiple strides including an ambling trot it was already a winner for her. â—?

MOVE COUNCIL TO TAFE There is a simply solution to the TAFE situation or problem - Think about what I have to say before you jump down my throat - the NSC really needs to negotiate with the State Government over how much money the unused TAFE is worth - tell them NSC will buy the premises providing the money we pay goes towards fixing Beckman’s Road. Purchase the property, then move the council chambers to the TAFE site. It will need an upgrade that’s for sure, but that can easily be fixed. Then sell the present council chambers to a big developer for millions and allow them to put in a MCU to build a mega resort with a ground floor car parking for both resort and public - extending right down to Harbour town - allow them the height restriction that was allowed for the Sheraton - at least two stories or more of luxurious apartments (holiday letting only). Give them permission for a helicopter pad on the roof top. Make allowances for seaplanes to land to deliver patrons. It would be beneficial for the resort to arrange a shuttle bus service for Noosa Main Beach and Hasting Street, Sunshine Beach, Hinderland Tours, in fact tours to Fraser Island, Australia Zoo and anywhere else. Allow above street walk ways across to the RSL, down to the main street, to the RSL park and to the marina. Make sure our local boaters still have access to the boat ramp and parking - utilise the little riverside wading pool could be open to the public and maintained by the resort as an asset of the resort, either move the art gallery or negotiate with resort developer to leave it where it is - it too re-built, could be an asset for a resort. Tewantin businesses would be become part of a boom town - think of the jobs and money it would create - might have to build around Ray Scholes' home if he will not sell. Move the River way walk a bit closer to the river and make it safe and secure - with maybe a couple seating or fishing platforms on stilts. Think of what it would do for all those concerned - the fishing charters, ferry service to Hastings Street, the marina shops and markets, river cruises, everglade trips, the news agency, the bakeries, coffee shops, bottle shops, RSL trade, Royal Mail trade, restaurants in fact name a business that wouldn’t benefit. The potential goes on and on, while man can live in his environment as part of the biosphere. Bob Jarvis, former Noosa councillor.

LENSCAPE

Kevin Long from Sunshine Beach encountered this beautiful Coastal Carpet Python in Noosa NP near Sunshine Beach. "My Go Pro 5 camera mounted on the end of an old broom stick took this ground-level photo as the snake slithered past, apparently unconcerned," said Kevin. the Tewantin Tafe and move into it. This would allow them to sell that highpriced riverfront property that they now occupy. They could also sell the part of the 11 hectares that they don’t need. Wonder what that would do to our rates? Hubert Gibson, Tewantin

TEWANTIN TAFE Much has been said and written in regard to Noosa Council purchasing the Tewantin TAFE property. Council has advised that if they were to purchase this property from the Queensland State Government then ratepayers would face a rates rise in the order of plus 2.5 per cent. This rates increase would be on top of significant rates rises that are no doubt coming in the near future due to: 1. Noosa ratepayers for the past three years since deamalgamation have had rates increases far lower that CPI and below the LGAQ recommendation. The rates increases would not cover council's cost increases over this period. 2. Council's capital infrastructure costs have increased dramatically from the council's prediction to QTC April 2015 of 2019 capital expenditure $22.6 million to a current council budget of $31 million. 3. Council has reported that three major bridges are facing significant repair costs which perhaps are not included in current budget predictions. 4. Council is facing major drainage issues along Gympie Tce the repair cost yet to be determined. 5. Council is currently undertaking camera inspect of all shire drains and a council staff member advised at a council meeting that numbers of drains would have to be unblocked in order to introduce the camera into the drain. Costs for repairs yet unknown. 6. Nearly all council ventures such as the J complex, Noosa Leisure Centre, aquatic centre, Peregian Digital Hub are all revenue negative for the council. 7. Council currently has a debt of $33 million with QTC. Where is all the money coming from? Can Noosa ratepayers expect significant rates increases to cover near future costs even without the purchase of the Tewantin TAFE property? Do Noosa ratepayer wish to take on another Council venture that is revenue negative? Perhaps we are a low rates based community living and dreaming beyond our financial capabilities. Jeff Nuske, Noosa Heads

ATTENTION AND TRAINING IS KEY I agree to a point with J. Konrad (NT 6 September) re: speed limits. The Eumundi - Noosa Road was 90km/h a few years ago (now 80km/h with further speed reductions sought) and the Yandina - Coolum Road was 100km/h a few years ago (now 80km/h). The engineering of these roads has not changed. The reason for the many crashes (NOT accidents) on these roads recently appear to be predominantly caused by lack of attention, instead of concentrating on driving the vehicle. mobile phones, GPSes, and other distractions are often the cause. Driving concentration is secondary. The situation is getting ridiculous to the point that the knee jerk reaction to crashes is a speed reduction. Speed is not necessarily the cause of ‘most’ crashes, it is lack of attention. Another issue is the substandard skill level of today’s drivers. What is required is proper driver training on a test track so beginners (and existing drivers) can learn how to handle a vehicle in emergency situations and understand vehicle dynamics. Speed limits are being unnecessarily reduced to serve the lowest common denominator of driving skill and inattention. Until the distractions issue and driver skill levels change, we will continue to see an increase in ‘crashes’. Mark Jones, Doonan

SPEED SHOULD BE LIMITED In reply to J. Konrad (NT, 6 September) of Peregian Beach wanting the speed limit raised to 100km/h along David Low Way between Stumers Creek and the motorway. This person has obviously not seen the disabled young man, school children and the elderly trying to get to and from the bus stop across David Low Way near Tritonia Drive, Emu Mountain Estate. I commute this stretch of road on my push bike to go to work at Coolum and after seeing so many near misses and accidents, I agree the speed limit should be lowered. Katrina Bowman, Noosa

KNOCK IT OFF Another speed limit, J. Konrad? Motorists with J Konrad’s attitude (NT, 6 September) really pee ( that’s speed without the s and d ) me off. What’s this obsession with speed these days? Obviously he/she has never gone past Coolum sports centre on a Saturday morning, cars and children everywhere both sides

of the road, personally I think police should be there and it should be a 40 zone on a Saturday when sport is on. Are cars and speed more important than people's lives in this mad rush to the grave? I also think it should be 40 all the way through Coolum. I also wish the police would police the 40 zone going through Peregian village. I’ve been involved with motor sport one way and another most of my life and without question speed kills. Speed limits are there for a very good reason, for safety, if you really need so desperately to speed join a car club and get out on the track or go play on the motorway where there are no pedestrians, children, cyclists, etc. Roads are arteries for getting from A to B, not for getting from A to B as fast as is possible. Stuart Bradbury, Peregian.

RECONSIDER BAITING Every year, twice a year councils drop a 1080 poisoning baiting program all over the area with baited meats that attracts many animals, not only the considered unwanted animals, and creating a nightmare of agonising deaths for many species. Sunshine Coast Council and Noosa Council started their baiting program this week (it runs for next four weeks). This year for the first time I have noticed more Brahminy kites, also known as the redbacked sea-eagle, circling around over and near the Sunshine motorway. Sadly these beautiful magnificent, quintessential, Australian hunting birds will die. If they don’t take the poisoned baited meat then they will eat parts of the dead animals who have succumbed to the deadly 1080, poisoning unawares that the dead animal will kill them also. Especially in these dry conditions where the 1080 poison will remain in the carcasses for months. These Brahminy kites and also many other hunting birds may have arrived here from the drought affected areas desperate and hungry, it would be a horrible tragedy if they then die from 1080 laced meats. I would ask these councils to re-consider the use of 1080, which can also kill many pet dogs - it’s a deadly nasty poison that has no antidote. Marie-Louise Sarjeant, Peregian Springs

RETHINK DOG BEACH I totally agree with Sue Monticone (NT, 9 August) on dogs off leash adjacent to Noosa National Park. We have experienced the unwelcome sniffing from dogs on the stairs down to North Sunshine Beach and dogs running at us, only to be arrogantly told by their owners ‘get over it, you’re at a dog beach’! This is the only southern beach access to the NP. The decision allowing this beach to be used as a dogs off leash area must be revisited. Agree with the belligerent ‘go to another beach’ attitude of many dog owners. We have also seen doggy bags full of dog poo left on the beach near the high tide mark. This is absolutely disgusting. What must visiting tourists think of the lack of respect for natural areas and all the dog poo? I for one don’t want to swim in it! What damage are these often uncontrolled dogs doing in the National Park to wildlife and vegetation, not to mention their faeces? I call on National Parks and Wildlife organisations and Noosa Council to reverse this bad decision. Dog owners over representatively have carte blanche with dog beaches on the SSC. Enough is enough! COASTAL LIFESTYLE, HINTERLAND HEIGHTS ATMOSPHERE is an exclusive new estate nestled ideally between Coolum Beach's unparalleled coastline and the Sunshine Coast's glorious hinterland. Situated in the foothills of Mount Ninderry, with amazing views and surrounded by a protected nature reserve, this land is one-of-a-kind. There are just 17 lots in the estate, each more than 6,000 sq m, offering residents a unique place to call home. A secure, gated entry offers peace of mind, while a recreation pavilion with panoramic views is available for residents' exclusive use. With 14 lots sold since the estate was completed in February, these perfectly placed parcels of land are proving to be in high demand. Just three remain available now. This is a testament to Atmosphere's quality and location, as well as the strength of the Sunshine Coast property market. Atmosphere offers the best of both worlds, combining coastal lifestyle with hinterland tranquillity, only 10 minutes from Coolum Beach. The location is ideal for accessing many other popular destinations such as Noosa Heads, Maroochydore Town Centre & Airport, Mooloolaba Esplanade and Maleny. What makes Valdora so special? With a population of just over 500, it's little wonder so few people have heard of Valdora. This tiny suburb is situated just north of the Maroochy River in the foothills of Mount Ninderry. With the majority of the area zoned rural residential, and large sections of

protected native bushland, Valdora has retained its unique charm and serenity. Future land releases in Valdora are unlikely, making land in this area especially rare.

For a limited time, the developers of Atmosphere are offering a free solar and Tesla Powerwall battery package valued at $19,500. This offer includes a 6.6kw system and

Tesla energy storage system, making your new home virtually self-powered. If you'd like to know more call David Hughes on 0491 115 144 to arrange an inspection. â—?

PROPERTY NEWS

WATERFRONT APARTMENTS’ HEALTHY SALES OFF the back of record sales across four sites adjacent to the new Sunshine Coast University Hospital, RGD Group has launched its latest healthy investment opportunity, SOUTHBANK at Oceanside. Over the past two years, the Sunshine Coast-based company's projects in the Birtinya health precinct - NORTH SHORE Oceanside Kawana, SALT at Oceanside, WATERLINE at Oceanside and AQUARIUS at Oceanside - have all sold out prior to completion, with a combined value of $120 million. RGD Group managing director, Ron Grabbe, said the $2 billion, 450-bed Sunshine Coast University Hospital and the 200 bed Sunshine Coast University Private Hospital had a positive impact. "We've had great demand from astute investors and owner occupiers from around Australia and overseas who saw the growth potential and convenience of owning waterfront property adjacent to these world class medical facilities," he said. "Much needed accommodation for thousands of hospital staff and visiting families is now a reality and our apartments are proving to be one of the healthiest investments available in Australia right now." RGD Group designs, builds, sells and manages its projects. Sales and marketing manager, Gail Hunter, said a lot of residents living in the already completed apartments worked in the hospitals. "With vacancy rates on the Sunshine Coast tightening, the region experiencing one of the fastest population growth rates in Australia and significant infrastructure

projects just completed or underway such as the new hospitals, the Maroochydore CBD and the expansion of the Sunshine Coast Airport and University of the Sunshine Coast, our waterfront apartment developments are ideally positioned to realise great returns and lifestyle benefits for both investors and owner occupiers," she said. Newly launched, SOUTHBANK at Oceanside will feature one, two and threebedroom apartments in the heart of the

booming Health Precinct. All apartments face the water or parkland, which provides a tranquil and relaxing home for those working in or visiting the hospitals. Owner occupier will find comfort in living close to the world-class medical facilities, the new Birtinya Shopping Centre currently under construction, coffee shops, public transport and waterfront walking and cycling paths. "SOUTHBANK at Oceanside will provide

the opportunity for medical professionals and savvy investors who may have missed out on our previous projects to secure a waterfront apartment to cater for the thousands of hospital shift workers needing accommodation close to their work," Mr Grabbe said. PLAN FOR BUYING THE RIGHT BUSINESS BY MANNI RIBEIRO

from friends and family are firm before you start negotiating and include these people in the process as appropriate. Define and refine your interests, capabilities and budget in advance, so you'll recognise the right opportunity when it comes along then act! 5. Be patient. Negotiating the right deal takes time and effort, typically some two to six months. Commit the time to

accomplish the many tasks. Don't get discouraged if the deal doesn't work out. You may need to find more than one business to pursue. 6. Don't over spend. Negotiate only for terms that you can realistically afford. Don't overstretch yourself to your financial capacity. Leave sufficient rainy day and transition capital to ensure a cushion of safety.

12383586-CG14-18

RUNNING your own business can be rewarding, but it's important to make sure you buy the right business, for the right price and terms. 1. Purchase a business that you will enjoy. Realistically assess what you enjoy, your personal goals for the coming years, your personal strengths and your weaknesses. Make sure the day-to-day effort in your business will be fun for you. Getting up every morning and being excited about the coming day makes the work load seem light. 2. Never confuse a business that doesn't show a profit for tax purposes with a business that isn't profitable. Private businesses prepare tax returns to minimise taxable income. The taxable income reported on a small business tax return is rarely an indicator of the true earnings realised by the business owner. 3. Expect and respect confidentiality. Knowing that a business is for sale can set off alarms with employees, customers and suppliers and do permanent damage to an operation that might become yours. Customers and skilled staff could go elsewhere, reducing sales and profits. If you're dealing with a business broker, you'll be asked to sign a non-disclosure/ confidentiality agreement (NDA) protecting confidential and proprietary information about the business for sale. 4. Be prepared. Timing is everything, so be prepared in advance to make a serious offer once you have found what you are looking. Get financial and credit facilities in order before you consider buying. Make sure that "soft" financial commitments

7. Choose the right professionals. Every buyer needs a good lawyer and accountant on their team. Find experts who have experience in buying and selling businesses and who understand their role in the process. Most solicitors and accountants are not entrepreneurs or business experts. Their job is to protect your interests against all conceivable risks, and the safest recommendation they can make in every situation is to not take a risk. Remember that you are ultimately the one who makes the business decision based on your talents, expertise, instincts and entrepreneurial goals. 8. The terms of the deal are always more important than the actual purchase price. Understanding your seller's objectives and reason for selling is a critical part of finding the right opportunity and structuring the right deal. Above all, do NOT take the negotiating tactics of the seller personally, or get caught up in the emotion of the situation. Rely on the professional expertise of your intermediary to negotiate well and create win-win terms that work for both parties. 9. Secure a non-compete/non-solicit agreement and a training and transition program. You want to keep the seller around long enough to train you and to ensure a smooth transition for clients, suppliers and staff. If seller training is critical to your success, protect yourself by putting life and critical illness insurance payable to the business in place for the required training and transition period or use the seller financing to self-insure. 10. Last but not least, find a broker that you feel comfortable working with.

POACHED SALMON WITH GARLIC COOK

These beautiful salmon fillets are baked in a bed of garlic, basil and olive oil and served with a tangy and fresh fennel salad. INGREDIENTS ¡ 8 x 120g salmon fillets, skin removed ¡ 1 1/2 cups grapeseed oil ¡ 8 cloves garlic, peeled and bruised with knife ¡ 1/2 cup basil leaves ¡ 1 small bulb fennel, trimmed, finely shredded ¡ 1 bunch coriander, leaves picked ¡ 1 teaspoon white sugar ¡ 1 lime, rind finely grated and juiced METHOD Step 1 Preheat oven to 90C or 70C fan. Pull out all the fine bones from the salmon fillets with clean fish tweezers or household tweezers. Step 2 Pour oil into a large baking dish. Lay salmon in oil in a single layer. Top with garlic and basil and season with salt and pepper to taste. Cover with plastic wrap and bake for 30-35 mins until the salmon is firm. Remove from oven and set aside to cool to room temperature. Step 3 Meanwhile, toss together fennel and coriander. Combine lime rind, juice and sugar. Add to fennel and toss to combine. Chill. Step 4 When ready to serve, remove salmon from oil

bath and arrange on serving platter. Add 1 tablespoon of oil from fish to fennel mixture and toss to combine. Pile fennel salad over top of salmon fillets. Serve at room temperature.

Tip: You can prepare this dish on the morning of your party. Cover, chill then bring back to room temperature before serving. At low temperatures in an electric oven plastic

wrap won't melt and is used to enhance the texture of the salmon. However, if you have a gas oven use foil to cover the salmon. â—?

ASTHMA WARNING OUT THIS SPRING

rates in the world, with an estimated 2.5 million people affected. More than 400 people die each year from asthma-related incidences - and Dr Chris Moller, from Ochre Medical Centre Sippy Downs, says the onset of spring, coupled with the lack of rainfall, could lead to a higher-than-average spike in asthma attacks.

With extremely dry conditions across large parts of Queensland, and the early arrival of the bushfire season in some parts of the state, one local GP is warning asthmatics to be on high alert, as they may be at greater risk of acute exacerbations. Australia has one of the highest asthma

In spring, the presence of dust storms and higher pollen counts can trigger hay-fever related allergies, which may mimic or exacerbate asthma. The epidemic thunderstorm asthma event that hit Melbourne in November 2016, which was caused by a potent mix of airborne pollen, weather conditions and rain, left 10 people killed and saw many others suffer from acute asthma-like flare-ups. According to Dr Moller, people should assess their risk to certain environmental irritants that can make them more susceptible to an attack. "Dust storms from a lack of rain, windborne pollen, and the risk of living in a high bushfire zone are common environmental asthma triggers that can cause serious flare-ups. Children are often the first to feel the effects of smoke and particle pollution, and parents need to take extra care." A further 80 per cent of asthmatics have seasonal allergens - especially in regional and remote areas, where the prevalence of asthma is higher than in major cities. Dr Moller is encouraging Australians to take extra preventative measures during spring. "As asthma triggers are varied, it's important to take preventative measures first. When pollen levels are high, dry bed linen indoors, re-circulate the air in your car, and use your prescribed medication before going outdoors. The right medication, knowledge and a written Asthma Action Plan can help keep asthma under control." Dr Moller explains five things you need to know about the link between seasonal allergens and asthma: 1. Know the four steps of asthma first aid. As most people know of someone affected by asthma, it's important that not only asthmatics, but their friends, family and work colleagues, learn the four steps of Asthma First Aid: sit the person comfortably upright, give them four puffs of a blue/ grey reliever through a spacer if it is available, then wait four minutes. If the person still cannot breathe normally, call an ambulance immediately and keep giving them the reliever every 4 minutes. If the person is experiencing severe shortness of breath, or their lips are turning blue, call the ambulance

immediately and give them their reliever every 4 minutes. When exercising avoid cold, dry air if possible. As exercise is an important part of good asthma management, don't let challenging environments stop you from being physically active - it's important to treat the cause of asthma, not just the symptoms. Use your reliever before exercising if you need to. If you're exercising in cold weather, try to breathe through your nose to help warm and moisten the air before it reaches your airways. Warm up before any strenuous activity and avoid environments with high levels of allergens, pollution or irritant gases. Reduce outdoor activities where pollution and pollen levels are high. Smoke, dust and increased air pollution from bushfires can trigger asthma symptoms, such as wheezing, breathlessness, coughing or tightness in the chest. On high-risk days, remain indoors with the doors and windows closed. If you're driving, ensure that you're using re-circulated air in the car. Know what triggers your asthma. Asthma can flare-up as a response to different triggers in different people, so it's important to know what allergens - house dust-mites, smoke, pollen, mould, or pets - trigger your asthma, and how to limit your exposure. Mould exposure can be reduced by sealing leaks in bathrooms and roofs, removing indoor plants, and by using high-efficiency air filters, for instance. By knowing what triggers to avoid, it is easier to prepare for an asthma flare-up. Have an Asthma Action Plan. To be prepared, have a personalised Asthma Action Plan ready to use whenever symptoms worsen. Spring can see a rise in influenza and hay fever, so it's important to talk to your GP and adjust your plan according to the seasons. Your plan should include a list of your usual asthma medicines, instructions on what to do when your asthma is getting worse, and what to do in an emergency, to ensure that you're prepared for any unexpected flare-ups or respiratory viruses.

FRIDAY FORUM

BOOMERANG BAGS

Just a few years after Australia's first colony was established, settlers became aware of a small, semi-aquatic animal inhabiting creeks and billabongs. Amazingly, this creature had the body and size of a mole or water rat but the bill of a duck. Specimens sent to England for study puzzled even the most experienced taxonomists. It was of course the platypus. On September 14, Noosa Parks Association member and keen amateur naturalist Kon Hepers will enthral the audience at Friday Environment Forum with his insights into the life of that shy little creature, the platypus. Learn about the anatomy, reproduction, habitat and distribution of this Australian icon at the Environment Centre with the forum commencing at 10.30am. Coffee and a chat will be on offer from 10am and to join the Interpretive Birding group meet Valda in the car park at 8.30am. All are welcome. Visit www.noosaparks.org.au for more information.

TIME TO PAD UP

OUTSTANDING WIN TO GIRLS

As the warmer weather approaches, sporting endeavours turn to all things cricket. Tewantin Noosa Cricket Club is encouraging all those who live in the Noosa area and surrounds to take part in the upcoming 2018/19 season. Tewantin Noosa Thunder is one of the leading cricket clubs on the Sunshine Coast and our junior program and senior teams are second to none. There is the Girls' Tewantin Thunder League for 6 years and up on Thursday evenings, also on Thursdays our Junior Blasters Competition caters for our youngest and newest players from 5 to 8 years of age. Master Blasters on Friday nights caters for our 8 to 10 year olds and competitive cricket for Under 11s to Under 16s on Saturday mornings. The first of three come and try sessions for women who may have never picked up a cricket ball was held last Sunday and proved a great success according to the Club's Amanda Tie. "It was great to see so many women who had never held a cricket ball before having a go at throwing, catching and batting." In its second year the women's competition consists of only 50 over matches and played every fortnight, with a

The Rococo's Bar and Bistro Noosa Tigers Under 15 Youth Girls have brought home the premiership flag after a comprehensive 46 point win over Kawana Park last Friday night at Maroochydore. The Tiger girls were simply outstanding with their pressure and team orientated football wooing a strong crowd at Fishermans road. For many it was their second flag in as many years however it was the way in which the girls performed throughout the entire night that had the strong Noosa faithful in raptures. Hannah Mckenzie just shone from start to finish with her cleanness and running ability to be easily the best player on the ground. Mia Woodburn again dominated through the middle the entire game gathering heaps of the footy and tackling her heart out whilst the strength and courage of Queensland schoolgirl representatives Maggie Harmer and Keana Welsh was certainly on display. Co-captains Emma Benjamin and Teesh Fox lead from the front with terrific games whilst power forward Imogen Van Der Vegt (four goals) as usual had a big influence on the game. Down back not much got passed Lauren Vaughan and Sari Abbott in what was the best defensive effort the girls have produced all year. Kate Roberts, Kalinda

The winners were Robyn Pettman (Nambour) who claimed first place with 33

Caligari, Kaitlin Carney and Milly Ellis played their part down back whilst small forwards Chloe Pitts, Ella Reddaway and Scarlett Tait were busy and had a hand in several goals. Charlotte Sipp battled hard in the ruck all night in what really was just a terrific team performance on the big stage. Well done girls, it was a pleasure to watch! Our Under 13 Girls unfortunately went down to a very different but powerful Maroochydore Flyers outfit but should hold their heads high on a fantastic year. The much younger and smaller Tigers were well served by usual suspects Kaiya hide and Poppy Tindal with Natasha Monaghan again showing us how much she has improved. Zoe wood and Sarah O'Connor battled hard for the runners up with so much promise to look forward to in the future. ●

LIFE OF BRINE

PHIL JARRATT

THE BROKEN HOUSE OF AZENHAS DO MAR "Would you like to see our broken house?" Asked Rudi Craven-Bennett, our gorgeous three-year-old friend, as we strolled up the cliffs of Azenhas Do Mar on the Sintra coast of Portugal after a long and lovely lunch at a beachfront cafe. You bet we would! And when we finally arrived at the top of the hill and took in the magnificent ocean view from the two-acre derelict estate, Rudi bounced inside and proudly showed us the cracks that runs from front to back, ceiling to floor in this 1850s mansion gone horribly wrong. Rudi's dad Deano, who I mentored in his postgraduate days almost 20 years ago, shrugged his shoulders and grinned as we made our way outside to the camp kitchen to crack another bottle of the cheap and excellent vinho de casa. As the sun fell low over a stormy Atlantic and the village of Azenhas Do Mar began to glow, Dean Bennett and his wife Alex Craven told us about their crazy dream while we sat on logs and sipped wine from jam jars. Deano was a dreamer when I first met him, while guest lecturing at Plymouth University's pioneering surf science faculty. Later I helped him get a job in surf marketing, and we've been firm friends ever since. But Deano's ambition was bigger than surfwear, particularly when he hooked up with childhood sweetheart Alex, and the two created one of London's most vibrant and successful fashion PR outfits. A couple of years ago, when they sold up, as you must when you toil in fields of bulldust, they knew they'd end up in Portugal, after surfing their way around the world, and dropping in to see us in Noosa. Last week we repaid the favour, although Deano had been quick to explain that if we wanted to stay with them, we'd have to bring our own tent. We settled for a cosy hotel room down the road at Praia Das Macas, where the tramline that used to bring the royals and the rich merchants down to the seaside from the mansions of Sintra ends just below our window. Deano and Alex hunted around for a house with land, close to a surfable beach and where they could instigate the reverse cycle of their frantic London life, growing

their own food and living off the grid as much as possible. Of course, they fell in love with the crumbling mansion on the hill. How could you not! But what a mighty mission they've taken on. When we arrived, Portugal was just getting back to work after the summer break, and slowly at that, but with winter closing in already, Deano was trying to talk sense to a builder about making a halfburied servants' quarters at the back of the property habitable before the first frosts. It's not as easy as it sounds. Patrimony legislation means you cannot knock down a wall of a historic building, you have to build around it. "Yes!" he shouted happily, running down the steps to join us for a farewell coffee in the late morning sun. "I've made a deal and they'll start work next Monday. Next time you come, we'll have a room for you." And I hope it will be soon. Great people, magical stretch of coast. Being quite close to Lisbon, we dumped the Fiat Bambino at Sintra railway station and trained it into town for a city hit,

climbing the stairs to gaze out over this magnificent city from the rooftop bar of our hotel, The Independente. After dinner we set out to find the magic of authentic Fado music. I've been in love with the melancholic, sometimes almost mournful sounds of Fado since hearing it performed by a brilliant family band from Flores, one unforgettable night on the sands of Turtle Island in Bali. The music originated in Lisbon in the 18th century and was carried around the world to Portuguese colonies. It reflected the uncertainty of life for the great navigators. Would they ever see their loved ones again? Well, we found a restaurant with a family band that was just perfect, and sang along with the old songs until the wee hours. Next night it's another party, this time in Lisbon's rival for Iberia's hippest city, Porto. This was a place I had not visited for 45 years, and what a stunning mix of old charm and new energy it's become. After a city tour, we were hosted by the Porto longboard community for an afternoon and evening of fun and frivolity at the Hang Five

Surf Culture Shop, which ended with heroic consumption of sushi, beer and wine at a long table set outside the shop on a warm Porto evening by the beach. And Portugal, that's a wrap, although I will be back in a week for the Azores Masters just offshore a couple of hours. Obrigado! Jury still out on Surf Ranch Pro As I write, the first artificial wave pool world tour event in 30 years is just hours old. Many words have been written already, of course, but I've yet to see how the public voted with their Facebook viewing. For mine, from the bits I was able to watch on phone and laptop while on the road, as a viewing spectacle there was simply too much dead air while waiting for the machine to reload. The WSL team has to work out how to fill it with interesting analysis rather than endless promo guff. As far as the results were concerned, disappointing (and possibly fatal) for Julian Wilson's world title campaign, considering his incredible form in the pool. ●

BETWEEN THE FLAGS

RON LANE

NEW SEASON BEGINS - IT’S PRE-SEASON With the 2018/19 Surf Life Saving season just weeks away pre-season checks are the order of the day in both club life activities and competition. Sunshine Beach Surf Club last weekend saw a massive working bee during which all gear and equipment was double checked prior to the commencement of patrols. "It was well attended," said club vicecaptain Bill Twigger. "Happy to relate the findings were very good with very little maintenance required. Also for the Emergency Response Team (volunteer 24 hour call out members) there were only two minor incidents during winter. With regard to membership the number is slightly up and patrolling rosters should be should be as required." A highlight of the winter months for Sunshine was the presentation of a Special Recognition Award for a major rescue in the very dangerous Alexandra Bay during last season. This occurred when a small number of patrol members responded to an emergency call from the Bay; and as stated by witnesses, "If it was not for the quick response of the lifesavers some people would have died." Regarding the building of their new clubhouse Sunshine Beach this week is expected to announce the name of the successful applicant for the project. In the words of a club spokesman Warrick Redwood, '' All is going well and our progress is on line for the planned February start.'' We wish them well. At Noosa Heads the club is also on the move with the pre-season Patrol Captains and Vice Captains gathering for their annual breakfast and meeting. During this the Club Captain Roger Aspinall bought all captains up to date with any alterations to

patrol regulations. "The meeting was well attended with a combination of veteran members and new comers," said Aspinall, "and all indications are that we will have the necessary numbers for full patrol rosters. In the area of surf sports Noosas boat section is definitely looking at a very busy season with a possible ten crews competing. With last years success of junior crews in both boys and girl divisions, all are again keen to get going. Boat coach and sweep Dave Tomba said, "With a possible ten crews we are in for a very busy season; last years success at the National ASRL Championships has been noted and rowers are making inquiries about our club. It is all good and very positive." Another very important move was made when Noosa Head Coach Darren Mercer took a team of 6 long course competitors for training and familiarizing session over the Coolengatta Gold course. This was in preparation for the annual Coolangatta Gold event which will be contested on the 6/7 October. This race which is contested over a distance of 42 kl, starting and finishing at Coolangatta, is regarded as one of the toughest in Australia. Under the supervision of Coach Mercer, former Iron Man legend, the team could not wish for a better preparation. Ably supported by his daughter Jordan an Iron Woman champion competitor, all aspects of the preparation has been very positive. Noosa Old Boys are reminded that this weekend is your clubs 90 year celebration and reunion. If unaware or you have been away please ring your club on 5448 0900. ●

Jacks are an ambush predator hiding under ledges and in mangrove roots waiting for a passing morsel of food. Suspending lures are a favourite as well as soft plastics and live bait. Quality trevally seem to be everywhere in the river with quality golden trevally taken off Gympie terrace as well as in Woods Bays and around the back of the sound. Good sized bream are still in good numbers with quality fish from the sand bags, Gympie Terrace and the river mouth. Tailor are also in the mix, coming in on the high tide. Quality whiting have been taken around the frying pan and this may mean the start of the summer run. A great way to fish for summer whiting is to use surface walkers and poppers while using an ultra-light finesse rod and reel. Floating leader is a must because fluorocarbon line sinks which can interrupt the action of the surface lure you are using. Flathead numbers are great ant the moment with plenty of quality fish on offer, fishing the run out tide seems to be the most productive with plenty of good fish nesting up around the sand bars and noosatoday.com.au

mud banks around the Tewantin stretch of the river. For the angler that love the sand between their toes, the beach seen is really starting to fire. Tailor are still on the move with the stretch between Teewah and Double Island producing some quality greenbacks. Quality pilchards, mullet fillet and bonito fillet have all been prime baits. If you get onto a good school of fish make sure you get those slugs out on a fast retrieve. The closer gutters have also had plenty of action with flathead, bream, whiting and the ever-present dart feeding in close, best baits have ben worm, pippies, yabbies and prawns. With the wind up for most of the last week, offshore report have been mostly from the larger vessels. Even with the sloppy conditions the angler that did get out managed to get some great results. North Reef was one of the destination with good results, pearl perch, snapper, venus tusk fish, moses perch and spangled emperor were all accounted for. North is one of those great reefs that having a good burley trail going really pays off, fishing floater through that trail will get the fish coming up the trail to eventually find your bait! For the anglers in smaller craft that ventured out to hang on the closer reefs, Sunshine was one of the main reefs on the

jigs and slow trolled hard bodies paid off. So on behalf of Jack Mangrove, best of luck on your fishing adventures! ●
