A range of fund-raising activities are happening, right down to Daniel pounding the neighbourhood pavements selling chocolates. “Some people have been really happy for me and bought lots,” Daniel said. It is a family affair, with David, wife Belinda and daughter Madison organising barbecues, cinema nights and trying to get a Bunnings sausage sizzle happening. The Mount Evelyn futsal centre is support-

Mount Evelyn Primary School student Daniel Fowler will travel to Barcelona in March for an elite futsal camp - but he needs some help to get there. “I was really surprised I got picked because only a few get to go to the camp in Spain,” the11-year-old told the Mail. He was selected in the squad after training at an Elite96 training clinic, run at Mount Ev-
elyn Futsal Centre. “Only 12 from each age group in Australia are selected and they will train with kids from Spain, Brazil and the USA in Barcelona for eight days,” his father, David, said. Elite96 is a futsal talent identification program and the Mount Evelyn clinic was in the hands of a professional coach and a player from Spain, supported by local coaches. “The whole family is really excited for Daniel and now we are working hard to raise the

IN BRIEF
Growing suburbs in $8.5 million boost By Derek Schlennstedt The Ridgewalk Trail is one of four projects that received a substantial cash boost from the State Government’s Growing Suburbs Fund. Monbulk MP James Merlino and Local Government Minister Marlene Kairouz announced $8.75 million for four Yarra Ranges projects at Karwarra Australian Plant Garden in Kalorama on Wednesday 12 September. They announced that $2 million would go towards the 26 kilometre Ridgewalk - a cultural and heritage walking and cycling trail to connect towns through the hills. The added cash boost means work is expected to start in August next year and the opening is pegged for 2021. Ms Kairouz said she looked forward to seeing it completed. “This $9.8 million project will wind through the Dandenong Ranges, including Upwey, Tecoma, Montrose, Ferny Creek, Sassafras, Olinda, Mount Dandenong, Kallista, Sherbrooke, Kalorama and Upper Ferntree Gully,” she said. “The trail will connect townships throughout the hills and lead people through natural sites and heritage interpretation, art and sculptures. “I’m very excited for the Yarra Ranges com-

Another $3 million will help the council to deliver the Warburton Mountain Bike Destination, and Esther Park in Mooroolbark will receive $1.25 million towards a multi-pitch synthetic soccer facility with lighting, which will cater for junior and senior competition soccer. Mr Merlino spoke about the benefits that
completing all four projects would bring to the region and said “they go to the heart of building what families need in our community”. “Five hundred and thirty-five jobs, an additional 757,000 visits to the Yarra Ranges and an economic impact of over 80 million dollars,” he said. “These are really important projects.” Yarra Ranges Mayor Len Cox said this was one of the largest funding boosts the shire had received through the Growing Suburbs Fund, and that the support would ensure the projects became reality. “These projects are all-important, not just for our region as the number one tourist destination in Victoria, who will be able to explore and experience their own region in different ways and to access world-class destinations and opportunities for physical activity at their doorstep,” Cr Cox said. Since 2015-‘16 the Growing Suburbs Funds has supported 10 of Melbourne’s Interface Council which are considered growing suburbs and include; Cardinia, Casey, Hume, Melton, Mitchell, Mornington Peninsula, Nillumbik, Whittlesea, Wyndham, and Yarra Ranges. Together, these council areas will accommodate 46 per cent of the state’s population growth until 2031.
Turnaround a bright idea for our safety A new turnaround area will boost safety on Margaret Road, Mount Evelyn. Yarra Ranges Council made the space in August following consultation with residents. Mayor Len Cox said the turnaround was a priority for the council because waste and recycling trucks were reversing down the road during weekly collections, which could be difficult for drivers and pose safety risks for pedestrians. "Reducing the amount of reversing our trucks undertake improves safety for both the drivers and our community, and will help to give residents peace of mind, whether they're driving or watching their kids play," he said. "Our staff worked closely with residents on Margaret Road to make sure these works would leave them better off." Cr Cox said the council identified the opportunity to remove some pine trees to improve visibility and access for drivers and residents. "The residents have then been able to use the felled tree for mulch and firewood, and have responded very positively to the works," he said. "I'm proud of what we've been able to do here and that we've been able to work so closely with our residents to find a safer solu-

Visit to Len’s back yard Spring is well and truly here, providing us with a wonderful excuse to get together as a community to celebrate what we love about the Yarra Ranges. Everyone in the community is invited to our free annual mayoral event, Len’s Backyard Open Day, held from 10am to 2.30pm on Saturday 20 October at Montrose Town Centre. Montrose Town Centre is a wonderful, modern venue and meeting spot to socialise and connect with community groups, and to take part in programs and workshops. Getting this piece of community infrastructure built has been one of my greatest achievements. Located in an attractive garden setting, you can hire the rooms for meeting and functions or enjoy concert series, movie

I have been the ward councillor for Walling Ward for more than 30 years and lived in Montrose for most of my life. Some of you will know the Irish strawberry tree which stands outside the Montrose
Town Centre. For me, the Irish strawberry tree is iconic to Montrose and highlights the history of the area, connection to the orchards of the Yarra Ranges and to the festive season. It’s fair to say I consider it to be part of my back yard! I encourage everyone to come along to the event, and to bring your family and friends, and meet outside the Irish strawberry tree to connect with different areas at Yarra Ranges Council. You can meet up with council teams including staff from Karwarra Garden at Kalorama, and enjoy family activities and entertainment from a very talented magician, circus performance and theatre. Children will be able to climb onto the tractor, get a photo and hear from the out-
door team about what they’ve been up to. The council’s safer communities team will be there to talk about being fire ready for the fire season and it’s likely there will be a visit from the Montrose CFA, too. Entertainment will be provided with help from the Dandenong Ranges Music Council, and there will be story time for the younger children with Eastern Regional Libraries (ERL). There will be plenty of parking at the venue, including spaces at Montrose Recreation Reserve over the road. The festival will be fully accessible to people living with a disability. The centre is at 935 Mt Dandenong Tourist Road, Montrose. Visit yarraranges.vic.gov.au for more information.

In previous years, Quilts for Orphans has hosted a two-day annual quilt fair on the former founder’s property in Monbulk. But the sale of her property and corresponding loss of the ’home base’ at the end of last year means it will now be held at Mont De Lancey Historical Homestead. The festival displays beautiful quilts that are created to express the ongoing labour of love from one country to another. Most quilts are for sale and the proceeds go to support children at home and in countries less fortunate. The festival will take place from 9 to 18 November.

Planned burns ahead
Councillor Mike Clarke with infrastructure staff.
On the double The Eastern Transport Coalition is asking Yarra Ranges residents to support a push for a second rail line. The ETC is advocating for better Belgrave and Lilydale line service ahead of the November State Election. It joined with Yarra Ranges Council on a video campaign featuring Lyster Ward Councillor Mike Clarke. Last year, almost one in five peak services on the Belgrave line were late by more than five minutes - the second worst result on the entire network. "With frequent cancellations and unreliable services, commuters are fed up with a service that just isn't up to scratch," Cr Clarke said. "Part of the problem with the Belgrave line
is the single track section from Ferntree Gully to the end of the line. "When trains are delayed the single track causes major delays, and the Belgrave line is one of the worst affected on the entire network. "That's why the ETC is calling for the line to be duplicated." Cr Clarke said duplicating the line would mean more trains and less congestion, fewer cancellations and a better commuting experience. "If you've ever been on a packed train to Belgrave or Lilydale with barely enough room to breathe, it's probably because the lines had the equal highest number of overcrowded or 'crush load' services on the entire network last year," he said.
"Adding your voice to the digital campaign is quick, easy and shows politicians that commuters on the Belgrave and Lilydale lines won't be ignored at this year's election." Visit etc.org.au/trains to get involved. The ETC advocates for sustainable and integrated transport services to reduce car dependency and secure economic, social and environmental well-being in Melbourne's east. It aims to work with the federal and state governments, and is made up of Melbourne's seven eastern metropolitan councils: Greater Dandenong, Knox, Manningham, Maroondah, Monash, Whitehorse and Yarra Ranges. The ETC represents more than one million people, and counting.
Forest Fire Management Victoria and the CFA have started planned burning across Victoria to reduce bushfire risk before summer. Forest Fire Management Victoria (FFMVic) chief fire officer Chris Hardman said they were focused on high-risk communities. "Planned burns throughout spring will be small, discrete operations that can be undertaken in a one or two-day period, rather than larger burns over a longer period of time," he said "You may see and smell smoke from these planned burns, and some roads and parks may close." Mr Hardman said underlying dryness across the state and the potential for an early fire season would limit burning opportunities. "We will be working closely with the Bureau of Meteorology to assess weather conditions, such as humidity, temperature and wind speed, and will only carry out burns when the conditions are suitable," he said. "Working with CFA is a vital part of our planned burning program, ensuring that we are using local knowledge to manage bushfire risk together." Visit www.ffm.vic.gov.au/plannedburn or call 1800 226 226 for information about planned burns.

Coalition in RSL pledge
Don’t be alarmed, but magpie swooping season has officially started. The black and white winged avians have already claimed one victim - Mount Evelyn woman Therese, who on Sunday 9 September posted a photo of her bloody forehead after a run-in with a magpie while walking along the Warburton trail. Facebook has since been beset with similar survival stories warning people to stay away from certain locations around the Yarra Ranges. Speaking to the Mail, Therese said she regularly walked along the trail and that this was her first experience being swooped. “I was just running and then he came from behind me and I didn’t see him coming,” she said. “He was in and out of my head before I knew what happened. “He actually pecked me, I was quite surprised I didn’t think they actually attacked you, just swooped.” A small nick from the bird’s beak caused blood to run over her forehead and a nurse who was walking along the trail came to her aid. “I put my hand on my head and I had blood everywhere,” she said. “The photo didn’t do it justice, a lot came out.” According to wild natives manager Falk Wicker from Healesville Sanctuary, magpies swoop only during mating season in spring when they basically become over-protective parents. The mating season can vary from state to state but is generally between late August and November. Mr Wicker said that magpies swooped because they were trying to deter others from entering their territory and coming close to their young. He suggested that the best response to being swooped was to maintain a normal walking or
A Liberal Nationals State Government would contribute $35,000 to upgrading Sassafras RSL. Liberal Monbulk candidate John Schurink said the upgrade would build on previous improvements, which had brought focus to the poor state of the remaining facilities. “Local RSLs are the lifeblood of our communities,” he said. “The local community have given an enormous amount of time to achieve this outcome, and I am thrilled that they have been rewarded with this funding commitment. “When I’m out in the community, I continually hear from locals that the Sassafras RSL needs these vital upgrades and now I can say a Liberal Nationals Government will deliver it.” He said the pergola area was run-down and needed replacement, and work on the toilets needed to be completed. The proposal also includes a built-in barbecue area, which is a much sought-after facility for younger members and their families. A Garden of Reflection would mark 100 years since the end of World War I. Shadow Minister for Veterans, Danny O’Brien, said that over the past four years the Sassafras RSL had tried hard to make its clubrooms a more attractive meeting place for members and their families. “The Dandenong Ranges RSL Sub-Branch has limited resources and revenue and this investment into a community asset will provide a great sense of respect and commemoration for our veterans," he said. “John Schurink has been a passionate advocate for this project and a Liberal Nationals Government will continue to support proactive RSLs with investments that benefit them and the wider community.”

protect their nest, and they do that by letting you know that you’re on the wrong track.” The best advice is to also avoid areas where swooping magpies are on watch, but the interactive Swooping Magpie Attack Map at MagpieAlert.com shows precisely where previous swooping has occurred. Mr Wicker suggested that hats, sunnies and attaching cable ties to helmets can all help to prevent magpies from swooping.

Lanyard of communication By Casey Neill A colourful new lanyard is helping people with autism to better communicate. Yarra Ranges police are distributing the jigsaw-patterned lanyards with an information card, free of charge. It can help people on the autism spectrum to alert others to their needs, likes and dislikes. Leading Senior Constable Linda Hancock said the idea came from the Chinese community in Box Hill, which implemented a similar project. She said the lanyard was an optional identifier, like a medical alert bracelet. "It can be displayed, or tucked away with the person referring to it in times of need," she said. "It helps them to supply information they may not be in a position to give themselves."
The jigsaw is the international logo for autism. Wantirna mum Elizabeth Curran has worked with Lead Sen Const Hancock. She has two sons with autism, now aged 25 and 26. She said the lanyard was about helping other people to realise they're on the spectrum in a discreet way. "Children with autism, there's nothing recognisable," Ms Curran said. "I think it's going to help to really complement a lot of the work that's been going on for a long time. "This is a link to help them communicate. "Some have verbal skills, some don't." She said the lanyards would be of particular help on public transport, and in instances where authorities requested identification. "The beauty now is there are so many peo-

"Sometimes their behaviour in the public can be very challenging or disruptive. "They might think they're on drugs or something like that." The lanyards can help not only police, but other parents. Ms Curran has offered to help parents experiencing a meltdown from a child on the spectrum. "Autism is always about a communication issue," she said. "Usually the person with autism doesn't have the skills at the time to communicate about it." Bev’s garden bursting with life in a rich tapestry of Oz By Derek Schlennstedt Over the past 15 years, Bev Fox has transformed a traditional suburban lawn and flower garden into a gentle garden featuring a tapestry of Australian plants. With a deep knowledge of indigenous plants that informed her plant selection and design, she has slowly added more and more to her colourful garden. This September, garden lovers have the opportunity to experience Bev’s little garden of bliss through Open Gardens Victoria. She said it was her love for the bush that inspired her to create an Australian-style garden that features rocks, curved paths and a cute frog pond. “I’m trying to really make it a bushy garden and give it a bush feel, but I like colour,” she said. “They come from all over Australia so it’s quite colourful.” The garden has an easterly aspect and features a large eucalyptus nicholii, commonly known as the narrow-leaved black peppermint or willow peppermint. Both sides of a central path are filled with a variety of small, colourful plants such as chorizemas, grevilleas and hibbertias. The nature strip has an ironbark eucalypt as the street tree and an acacia boormanii that came up as a seedling. Low growing daisies, grasses and other hardy plants create a hardy understorey. Bev said she wanted to create a garden which

Although featuring only indigenous plants, Bev said there was plenty of colour with banksias, prostantheras, and boronias making up the back garden. It has a naturalistic feel evoking the bush, Bev
has also used repetition of planting and design features that give complexity and overall unity. The garden will be open on 29 and 30 September as part of the Open Gardens Victoria and is at 6 Camellia Crescent, The Basin. Entry is $8.

Thanks, Kath! Acting Yarra Ranges Mayor Tony Stevenson paid tribute to retired Mail reporter Kath Gannaway at the Tuesday 11 September council meeting. He described her as an outstanding member of the local community, a champion of local causes, and a friend to many who helped to glue communities together. "I think she was very generous in sharing her local knowledge," he said. "She did hold us and other authorities to account. "On behalf of the people of the Yarra Ranges I wish to extend our thanks for all the work she has done." Cr Stevenson wished her a long and happy retirement.

Hay to help Lilydale Rotary Club has raised $16,200 for struggling farmers in Bairnsdale. "Every single dollar of this money has been used to purchase hay, grain and fuel vouchers," president Ron Haines said. "Furthermore, farmers in the Yarra Valley have donated some 27 round bales. "As well, all the transport costs have been donated by trucking companies - a saving of some $8000."
Hedge will grow on Yarra Ranges Council is looking to widen a Healesville footpath rather than cut back a 100-year-old hedge. It's received complaints about trimming the Crowley Road hedge from pedestrians, but cutting it back could destroy it. Environment and engineering director Mark Varmalis told the Tuesday 11 September Yarra Ranges Council meeting that "the best option is to not trim the hedge, but to widen the footpath". His team is now working with the property owner to make it happen. "We recognise the heritage value of it and will work with the property owner as best we can," he said. mailcommunity.com.au

NEWS
Active aged Mount Evelyn's Roger Boness is encouraging seniors across the state to get active. He won the Veteran Community Award at last year's Victorian Senior of the Year Awards. This year he's promoting the Victorian Seniors Festival, which is returning for its 36th year from 7 to 14 October. The event celebrates the one million-plus Victorians aged over 60 years who make a significant contribution to society. It will include more than 2500 events and activities to bring older Victorians together. Mr Boness improves the well-being of older and retired RSL members. "I do a lot of hospital visits, and do lots of hands-on work, like putting in wheelchair ramps at people's houses, cutting down dangerous trees, delivering wood or taking people shopping," he said. "Sometimes I just go and buy morning tea and sit with them." He was conscripted for national service in 1966 served in Vietnam. He's actively worked in his community to help veterans through the Mount Evelyn RSL. "We're a traditional sub-branch. We consider ourselves an important part of the community," he said. "We don't have any poker machines, so we have to find revenue through other means." Mr Boness was active in building a memorial garden on the Lilydale to Warburton Rail Trail at Mount Evelyn. He said up to 5000 people attended a dawn service there each year. Serving others is a theme that runs throughout Mr Boness' life. He was heavily involved in the union movement, where he went from being a carpenter's representative to becoming an Australian Workers Union organiser and working for the Community and Public Sector Union.
Roger Boness. He said his drive to help others came from his mother. "I'm just following her example. She was very active in the community," he said. His secret to living a good life is to live with purpose. "Be organised. You've got to have an agenda," he said. "Get up in the morning knowing that you've got something to do. Stay active, and get out and do it." From learning about Facebook and how to communicate with loved ones online, to awakening the body and soul with belly dancing and tai chi, the Victorian Seniors Festival offers an opportunity to try something new in a positive and safe environment. This year's festival theme, Get Social, promotes inclusivity and diversity among older Victorians. Regardless of background, experience or mobility, everyone is encouraged to take part in the festival to learn new skills and make new friends. Visit www.seniorsonline.vic.gov.au, pick up a free Victorian Seniors Festival program at any Coles store, library, council office or neighbourhood house, or call 1300 797 210.
The celebrations for the centre's 40th anniversary.
Four decades in Upwey Upwey's Buddhist Discussion Centre celebrated its 40th anniversary with guests from across the state. It's been at the same location - 33 Brooking Street - since the late John Hughes founded it on 9 September 1978. Exactly four decades later, the centre hosted 21 Buddhist monks and nuns from many of Melbourne's Buddhist Temples and about 60 guests from the Thai, Vietnamese, Sri Lankan, Taiwanese and Cambodian Buddhist communities from around Victoria. Yarra Ranges Councillor Noel Cliff was also an honoured guest.
The centre launched its first published book, Bringing Wisdom to Life, during the event and guests received free copies as part of the celebration. The centre recently interviewed past and present members to produce an oral history. The Buddhist Discussion Centre offers free classes and courses on Buddhism and this year ran its first classes for children to learn about Buddhist values for living a happy and peaceful life. ENTERTAINMENT
Hines brings boogie By Michael Doran Marcia Hines is bringing a night of Boogie Fever to Burrinja Theatre in Upwey on Friday 21 September. “It’s me and three other guys on stage for a song, a dance and a whole lot of fun,” she said. “Memories are the tapestry of life, so we like to do plenty of the up-tempo songs from the disco era, like Superstar, Got the Music in Me and You, and also some newer stuff as well. "Like any creative artist, you need to evolve and grow with the time and that’s what I am doing. “I’m continually re-inventing myself and I was blessed to have seven years judging on Australian Idol which introduced me to a whole new and younger audience. "They’re in their twenties now and I see them at my shows alongside those who grew up with me from the early days. “This show is something different as we interact a bit with the audience, have a bit of a chat, and a former Idol contestant is singing with us as well. "Music exists to bring joy into people’s lives no matter what age they are, and that’s what I am always trying to do.” Marcia is returning from a successful run with Velvet, an Australian musical partly based on the famous Studio 54 disco in New York and a concept she was involved in developing. It opened at the Adelaide Fringe Festival in 2015 before touring Australia and New Zealand and playing at the Edinburgh Festival during it’s18-month season. At just 16 she left the US to come to Australia and star in the musical Hair and with a career spanning four decades and sales of 2.6 million copies, she shows no signs of slowing down. “I’m better when I am busy," Marcia said. "I like working and will keep doing it for as long as I can. “I’m looking forward to singing at Burrinja and giving everyone who comes along a great night out.” Tickets are available from www.burrinja. org.au and showtime is 8pm.
The Waifs - Donna Simpson, Josh Cunningham and Vikki Thorn.
The Waifs on the road By Casey Neill
Marcia Hines is performing at Burrinja on 21 September.
The Waifs' Josh Cunningham is promising "lots of audience interaction" when the band plays in Upwey. The folk rock trio will bring their 25th anniversary regional tour to Burrinja on Thursday 11 October. "When I was a little kid I lived in the outer eastern suburbs of Melbourne," Cunningham told the Mail. "My family used to go the Dandenongs." The Waifs released their eighth studio album, Ironbank, to mark their quarter-century together. "We'll be including quite a bit of material off that album," he said. "We'll be dipping into that extensive back catalogue. "Songs drift in and out as they find favour with the band. "Sometimes it just comes down to what songs have been rehearsed. "We have had those experiences where we've tried to honour a request from the audience and someone's forgotten the lyrics. "Those moments actually make for something special, something memorable." Cunningham refers to Up All Night, which featured well-known track London Still. Visit www.burrinja.org.au for ticket information.
Linking art and nature creates real force Prey tell tale Leading visual and performing artists will unleash a Force of Nature in Lilydale. The exhibition will run until Sunday 14 October at Yarra Ranges Museum. Force of Nature considers relationships to local environments and imminent issues on a global scale. Artists Marnie Badham, Peter Fraser, Myfanwy Hunter, Gabrielle New, Jill Orr, Gulsen Ozer, Laki Sideris, Melinda Smith, Gretel Taylor, Tammy Wong-Hulbert and Tony Yap will feature. They’ll respond to environmental change, the influence of nature on their lives and arts practices, and ideas of post-nature. Curator Gretel Taylor has a background in dance and site-responsive performance. “We want viewers and audiences to feel, sense, move with, think about, question and connect with nature,” she said. “Tactile, embodied art can bring us to that connection.” Force of Nature will present lively art that inspires engagement with nature while fighting for it, mourning its loss, beckoning for connection and imagining future possibilities. It asks viewers to slow down to appreciate new perspectives and engage with nature as a profound experience in its own right. On Fridays throughout the exhibition, from 11am to 4pm, artists Marnie Badham and Tammy Wong-Hulbert will facilitate public participation in their cartographic - or map artwork. From 10am to 4pm on Sunday 7 October, Environmental Performance Authority codirector Peter Fraser will host a nature dancing workshop at Eagle Nest Picnic Ground in Olinda. Tickets are $45 to $55 and bookings are required at www.nature_dancing.eventbrite. com. mailcommunity.com.au
The Predator Starring Boyd Holbrook, Jacob Tremblay and Olivia Munn Rated MA15+
Curator Gretel Taylor appears in a video performance as part of the exhibition. 184775 Picture: ROB CAREW Lillydale Lake will host Picnic at the Lake, an art and nature forum, from 2pm on Saturday 13 October. Artists, Indigenous and scientific guests, and the public will discuss the state of nature
and potential roles of art and performance in facing challenges, plus there’ll be performances and installation art. Register at www.picnic_artnatureforum. eventbrite.com.
The fourth instalment in the Predator film franchise, The Predator is a highly-entertaining yet sloppy ride. Quinn McKenna (Boyd Holbrook), an elite sniper, joins forces with his autistic savant son Rory (Jacob Tremblay), a band of misfit soldiers and a biology teacher (Olivia Munn) to fight a deadly extraterrestrial hunter. The Predator's action scenes are visceral and creatively-staged, and are very effective in developing the film's quirky ensemble of main characters. Writer-director Shane Black also develops his characters through their humorous interplay. Many of the jokes feel strained or out of place in the first act, but the humour soon finds a more natural equilibrium. The Predator is a gory, thrilling action romp full of personality, but suffers from some severe plot and structure issues. Quinn's initial act of mailing sensitive alien equipment to his son makes no sense, and it takes much of the running time for the heroes to find a clear objective. The film has very erratic pacing, with rushed, poorly-established transitions between set-pieces and some shockingly bad editing. Every main character has heroic moments, but Casey (Munn) endures an irritating double-standard in the comedy. She receives far more belittling humour than the rest of the (predominantly male) cast, including a semigag in the first act that forces her into being naked and vulnerable around the Predator. The Predator is an exciting, ultraviolent ride burdened by messy structure and inept editing.

They’ll keep you moving By Rebecca Skilton Belwey Motors Upwey offers car and 4WD servicing and mechanical repairs including brake, clutch and cooling system work. Geoff and Jenny Ratcliffe have owned and operated the business since May 1996 and pride themselves on aiming to do repairs/ maintenance once and correctly. “One of the features of our small business is that we are able to offer personal interaction with our customers in regards to their motor vehicle repairs and maintenance requirements,” Geoff said. Geoff and son Simon, along with team members Liam and Sean, speak to customers and take into account their individual circumstances and vehicle requirements prior to and after services. “Quite often in the Dandenong Ranges we are dealing with steep and dusty roads, therefore creating the need, for example, to check filters more often than logbook guidelines and being super vigilant with checking brakes,” Geoff said. “We offer good workmanship - not gimmicks - to attract and retain customers. “We only use parts from known sources and are very particular with the quality, also taking into account the price which we consider important to our customers.” While Geoff has 54 years’ experience as a motor mechanic, including 25 years in the RACV Roadside Service, Simon has 29 years’ under his belt and Sean, who has worked for Belwey Motors for three years, has 15 years’ experience. “We are able to offer a high standard of workmanship given the staff we have and pre-
