Healesville’s attack of holiday art Healesville's budding artists can work with a professional to transform Healesville's streets. The It Takes a Town Project aims to make Healesville a better place for young people. As part of it, artist Gulsen Ozer will work with high school-aged youths to create temporary public art for the town's streets. Free school holiday workshops will start on Monday 24 September. Let there be light By Casey Neill Coldstream's Killara Road-Maroondah Highway intersection will get traffic lights if a Liberal Nationals Government is elected in November. Roads and Infrastructure Minister David Hodgett and Liberal Evelyn candidate Bridget Vallence met locals at the site on Friday 14 September to announce the $4.4 million plan. They'd met at the same spot back in April to discuss community concerns about the junction. Since then, Coldstream Voice's Kevin Ryan collected more than 1000 signatures on a peti-

tion calling for traffic lights. He's lived in the town for nine years, and said there was a fatality at the intersection just last year. "The traffic out here is increasing exponentially," he said. "The worst time is of a weekend." Mr Ryan said locals events and long weekends exacerbated the situation further. "You can't get out of Killara Road," he said. "The amount of near-misses that happen ... " Mr Ryan said a new housing estate about to spring up in the town centre would increase

traffic even further still. He said many drivers waiting to turn right from Killara onto Maroondah Highway resorted to instead turning left and performing a Uturn at Station Street. The Coldstream Fire Station has been on Killara Road since 1962. "This is the perfect spot for them," Mr Ryan said. Coldstream CFA captain Sean Bethell said it was impossible for his crew to get onto Maroondah Highway during peak times "even with lights and sirens going." The brigade has been advocating for lights for 10 years.

"This road network has got busier and busier," he said. Mr Hodgett said he tabled the Coldstream Voice petition in Parliament last week. Ms Vallence said the lights would improve safety, ease congestion, and provide CFA volunteers the ability to quickly and safely travel through the intersection in times of emergency. "If I am elected to represent Evelyn, I will continue to work closely with the local community and VicRoads to ensure we get the best outcome for motorists and residents," she said.

IN BRIEF

McKern lends hand By Michael Doran Healesville firefighter Tim McKern has returned home after a five week deployment fighting wildfires in the US. “This was my first deployment to the US but I have previously worked on fires in British Columbia, Canada,” he said. “This time I was stationed in Washington State, south-east of Seattle.” Australia has resource-sharing agreements in place with the US, Canada and New Zealand that allow the exchange of personnel, knowledge, skills and equipment in times of emergency. “Basically once one of the agencies reaches their capacity they will reach out for help," Mr McKern said. "Generally it is in middle-management, supervisory or strike-team roles that they request help. “In this fire I was working as a field safety officer, ensuring the systems were in place and functioning to ensure the welfare of the crews on the ground.” When asked about adjusting to the US environment, he said “there is a consistency in tactics, firefighting methodology and equipment but in language and terminology it gets a little bit trickier”. Mr McKern said that the big difference was the actual fire behaviour, with the different vegetation types producing a different type of fire than in Victoria. “In the US the fires are exceptionally intense and burn for longer, things like the pine trees and needles on the ground mean the fire holds its heat longer," he said. "Temperatures in the low 40s and very low humidity were also factors. “These fires were in very mountainous areas and the steep terrain meant there was not much scope for vehicle access, leading to a

Police arrested a Lilydale man over deception and drug offences. They executed a warrant at the 45-yearold’s house after he allegedly used stolen credit cards to buy power tools and other items at a Bunnings store. Police said they located stolen property at the address, as well as 27 grams of the drug ice. They charged the man with deception and trafficking a drug of dependence. He was bailed to appear in Ringwood Magistrates’ Court on 30 February.

Generators stolen Thieves took two generators from a shipping container office on a Coldstream construction site. Police said they broke into the Killara Road site between 4pm on 7 September and 6.50am on 10 September. The generators would have taken two people to carry, and were valued at $1500.

While Mr McKern has returned, the fires he left behind are still raging more than two months after starting. “It is all about containment now given the scope and terrain involved, and they will keep burning until the snows arrive in the next month or so,” he said. He has returned to his day-job as a fire behaviour analyst working from CFA headquarters.

Police arrested a 27-year-old Cockatoo man over a break-in at a Woori Yallock petrol station. Yarra Ranges CIU detectives allege he was involved in stealing lighters from the Warburton Highway store on 7 August. They executed a warrant at his home on 5 September and released him pending summons. Police are still investigating thefts from petrol stations in Healesville and Wandin North during August and whether they’re all linked.

“Some of the best learnings I got come from the relationships I formed with people doing similar roles in such a different environment,” he said, reflecting on his time in the US. Mr McKern's first involvement with the CFA came when he joined the Lilydale brigade some 20 years ago, and he has a close association with the Healesville brigade, having been a member for 10 years. He lives in Healesville with wife Nicole and children Tasman and Caitlyn.

The deadly sisters of Worawa speak out Thirteen young women from Worawa Aboriginal College in Healesville launched a self-written book in Federation Square. The 5 September launch coincided with Indigenous Literacy Day, which celebrates Indigenous culture, stories, language and literacy. The young women of Worawa wrote Deadly Sisters of Worawa with authors Dr Anita Heiss and Shelley Ware in just one week. It showcases stories about themselves, their families and sacred places, and what makes them proud to be deadly Indigenous women. Dr Heiss and Ms Ware joined the girls at the launch and introduced each one individually, praising the students and the special traits that helped to produce the remarkable book. Cheyenne Hayes and Jessica Byford, two of the student authors, read from the newlylaunched book. Jessica told the audience to “speak up,

cerns for the land and how she wanted to be a voice of change for Mother Nature. The book features these topics as well as powerful and moving poetry, and artwork is presented alongside the stories. It all combines to reveal how deadly these Worawa sisters are. The authors spoke to the Mail about the book's title, and the significance of presenting it to a crowd of 300. “We chose that title as it represents us all,” they said. “We wrote about our sacred place, and where we’re from, and our family and what we’re proud of. “It was a good experience, working with awesome people and meeting awesome people. “We had to sign the books and get photos... it was good...I actually felt like I was important and noticed for the first time in my life.”

Thieves forced a roller door to the canteen at Hoddles Creek Primary School just after 3am on 6 September. Police said they opened cupboards and left food on the floor, but didn’t steal anything. At Yarra Hills Secondary College in Mooroolbark, thieves did the same about 5.40am on 9 September.

Thieves strike twice Police believe the same thieves could be behind two incidents in Main Street, Lilydale. Someone stole an Oroton purse between 3pm and 6pm on 4 September, and used credit cards inside at Ozmosis in Lilydale Marketplace. Between 4pm on 3 September and 7am on 4 September, thieves forced a temporary lock on fencing around a building side and took a spray gun and other painting equipment and chrome towel rails, all valued at $9500. Call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 with any information.

Harvest run road closures Police are reminding residents that road closure will take place on 22 September along Healesville-Yarra Glen Road, as part of the Harvest Run. The 5.3km course is an out and back course starting on the Yarra Glen Racecourse. Participants will do a lap of the track before running out to Armstrong Grove and onto Healesville-Yarra Glen Road.

Summer reminder Healesville police are remaining people preparing for summer to remain vigilant of their equipment. Healesville police Sergeant Stewart Thomson said they seasonally saw an increase in trailer and water pump theft in the lead-up to summer.

Visit to Len’s back yard Spring is well and truly here, providing us with a wonderful excuse to get together as a community to celebrate what we love about the Yarra Ranges. Everyone in the community is invited to our free annual mayoral event, Len’s Backyard Open Day, held from 10am to 2.30pm on Saturday 20 October at Montrose Town Centre. Montrose Town Centre is a wonderful, modern venue and meeting spot to socialise and connect with community groups, and to take part in programs and workshops. Getting this piece of community infrastructure built has been one of my greatest achievements. Located in an attractive garden setting, you can hire the rooms for meeting and functions or enjoy concert series, movie club, speaker

series, performance platform concerts, term classes and school holiday activities. I have been the ward councillor for Walling Ward for more than 30 years and lived in Montrose for most of my life.

Some of you will know the Irish strawberry tre which stands outside the Montrose Town Centre. For me, the Irish strawberry tre is iconic to Montrose and highlights the history of the area, connection to the orchards of the Yarra Ranges and to the festive season. It’s fair to say I consider it to be part of my back yard! I encourage everyone to come along to the event, and to bring your family and friends, and meet outside the Irish strawberry tre to connect with different areas at Yarra Ranges Council. You can meet up with council teams including staff from Karwarra Garden at Kalorama, and enjoy family activities and entertainment from a very talented magician, circus performance and theatre. Children will be able to climb onto the

tractor, get a photo and hear from the outdoor team about what they’ve been up to. The council’s safer communities team will be there to talk about being fire ready for the fire season and it’s likely there will be a visit from the Montrose CFA, too. Entertainment will be provided with help from the Dandenong Ranges Music Council, and there will be story time for the younger children with Eastern Regional Libraries (ERL). There will be plenty of parking at the venue, including spaces at Montrose Recreation Reserve over the road. The festival will be fully accessible to people living with a disability. The centre is at 935 Mt Dandenong Tourist Road, Montrose. Visit yarraranges.vic.gov.au for more information.

IN BRIEF

Growing suburbs in $8.5 million boost The Warburton Mountain Bike Trail is one of four projects that received a substantial cash boost from the State Government's Growing Suburbs Fund. Monbulk MP James Merlino and Local Government Minister Marlene Kairouz announced $8.75 million for four Yarra Ranges projects at Karwarra Australian Plant Garden in Kalorama on Wednesday 12 September. More than $5 million of that will go towards projects in the Yarra Valley, with $3 million for the Warburton Mountain Bike Trail. Another $2.5 million will go towards the Yarra Valley Trail, to help Yarra Ranges Council deliver the project's 11.5km first stage. At the Growing Suburbs Fund announcement, Mr Merlino spoke about the benefits that completing all four projects would bring to the region. "Five hundred and thirty-five jobs, an additional 757,000 visits to the Yarra Ranges and an economic impact of over 80 million dollars," he said. "These are really important projects." "People who ride bikes - they spend money. "I go to Bright every summer and it's a huge part of that local economy. "This is really exciting for the local community in the Warburton and Upper Yarra Area and can be quite transformational." The announcement has overshadowed a pledge in May from Eildon MP Cindy McLeish and Shadow Environment Minister Nick Wakeling that a Liberal Nationals Government would provide $3 million towards Warburton Mountain Bike Trail's first stage. Ms McLeish responded to the announce-

Yarra Ranges Councillors Noel Cliff, Len Cox and Terry Avery, Monbulk MP James Merlino, Local Government Minister Marlene Kairouz and Councillor Tony Stevenson at Kawarra Australian Plant Garden. ment and said that "It looks like Labor are playing catch-up again." "The Liberals made a commitment to Warburton Mountain Bike Destination project 4 years ago prior to the 2010 election. We made that same commitment in May this year because we understand the value this project will bring to the Upper Yarra" "I've brought this project to the attention of the government having raised this project several times in Parliament and had an on-line petition." Recently Ms McLeish requested the Minister for local government to provide funding for the Warburton community recreation precinct through the Growing Suburbs Fund. The Warburton Mountain Bike Destination will involve more than 150 kilometres of mountain biking trails connecting Mount Donna Buang to the Warburton township and the surrounding mountains. The Yarra Valley Trail is an all-ages, accessible walking and cycling trail that will link Lilydale to Yarra Glen.

The Yarra Valley Trail will then join the Warburton Rail Trail and intersect with several visitor destinations. Yarra Ranges Mayor Len Cox said this was one of the largest funding boosts the shire had received through the Growing Suburbs Fund, and that the support would ensure the projects became reality. "These projects are all-important, not just for our region as the number one tourist destination in Victoria, who will be able to explore and experience their own region in different ways and to access world-class destinations and opportunities for physical activity at their doorstep," he said. The further two projects include a multipitch synthetic soccer facility at Esther Park in Mooroolbark, which will receive $1.25 million, and the 26-kilometre Ridgewalk in the Dandenong Ranges, which will receive $2 million. Ms Kairouz said it was important to support the interface councils,. "We know that Melbourne's outer suburbs are growing fast, that's why we're investing in local projects that local residents will benefit from for years to come." Since 2015-'16 the Growing Suburbs Fund has supported 10 of Melbourne's growing suburbs including Cardinia, Casey, Hume, Melton, Mitchell, Mornington Peninsula, Nillumbik, Whittlesea, Wyndham, and Yarra Ranges. Labor Candidate for Eildon, Sally Brennan was delighted at the announcement and said in “order to support local jobs” it was important to “develop new industries just like this.” “We need to be supporting nature based industries that showcase the beauty of our local region.”

Remembering Black Saturday The State Government is offering grants of up to $5000 for community groups in 21 municipalities affected by the Black Saturday Bushfires in 2009. The grants opened on Monday 10 September through the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning's (DELWP) 2009 Victorian Bushfires Commemoration and Community Development Grants Scheme. Councils will collate and submit eligible applications to Local Government Victoria by Monday 15 October for final funding approval. Visit vic.gov.au/2009-bushfires to check eligibility and apply at yarraranges.vic.gov.au/ bushfiregrants. Grants of up to $8000 will soon be available through Regional Arts Victoria's Community Arts Grants Program. The round is expected to open in mid-October and close on Thursday 31 January. Email the council on emergencymanagement@yarraranges.vic.gov.au or call 1300 333 368 with any questions.

Planned burns ahead Forest Fire Management Victoria and the CFA have started planned burning across Victoria to reduce bushfire risk before summer. Forest Fire Management Victoria (FFMVic) chief fire officer Chris Hardman said they were focused on high-risk communities. "Planned burns throughout spring will be small, discrete operations that can be undertaken in a one or two-day period, rather than larger burns over a longer period of time," he said "You may see and smell smoke from these planned burns, and some roads and parks may close." Mr Hardman said underlying dryness across the state and the potential for an early fire season would limit burning opportunities. "We will be working closely with the Bureau of Meteorology to assess weather conditions, such as humidity, temperature and wind speed, and will only carry out burns when the conditions are suitable," he said. Visit www.ffm.vic.gov.au/plannedburn or call 1800 226 226 for information about planned burns.

Hedge will grow on

Acting Yarra Ranges Mayor Tony Stevenson paid tribute to retired Mail reporter Kath Gannaway at the Tuesday 11 September council meeting. He described her as an outstanding member of the local community, a champion of local causes, and a friend to many who helped to glue communities together. "I think she was very generous in sharing her local knowledge," he said. "She did hold us and other authorities to account. "On behalf of the people of the Yarra Ranges I wish to extend our thanks for all the work she has done."

Yarra Ranges Council is looking to widen a Healesville footpath rather than cut back a 100-year-old hedge. It's received complaints about trimming the Crowley Road hedge from pedestrians, but cutting it back could destroy it. Environment and engineering director Mark Varmalis told the Tuesday 11 September Yarra Ranges Council meeting that "the best option is to not trim the hedge, but to widen the footpath". His team is now working with the property owner to make it happen. "We recognise the heritage value of it and will work with the property owner as best we can," he said.

This is simply even nuttier than the PCridden AFL's (under the leadership of PC Royal Family member Gillon McLachan) 'genderless' toilets at a St Kilda game this year, where little girls had to share the same toilets with men of all ages! As a young bloke I was in the cubs and then boy scouts at a time when we had the brownies and girl guides for girls; and believe you, me: I don't remember anybody of any gender/sex wanting to suddenly change camps, even on the wettest nights in the leakiest tents! If you're born with male DNA, forever a

bloke you should stay! Howard Hutchins, Chirnside Park.

Anthem opposition a 'stunt' The alleged spontaneous demonstration against our national anthem by a nine-yearold school girl was an obvious set up. How else would the story have seen the light of day? What was it all about? It is inferred that the words 'We are young and free' are disrespectful to the 40,000-year indigenous history of our nation. So let's change it to 'We are old and in jail'. How would that go down? A national anthem is marketing - a puff piece to make us all feel better. Young and free is a great way to be. Stanley R Burgess, Healesville.

Sanctuary Lanyard will Healesville marks birth of new baby communicate Healesville Sanctuary is celebrating the birth of an endangered Goodfellow’s tree kangaroo - the first ever to be born at the sanctuary. Mani and her breeding partner Bagam were successfully paired at the beginning of 2016 and after a routine pouch check earlier this year; keepers discovered Mani had a tiny joey growing inside. The joey spent six months in the pouch before tentatively poking its head out for the first time on a recent chilly winter’s morning.

By Casey Neill A colourful new lanyard is helping people with autism to better communicate. Yarra Ranges police are distributing the jigsaw-patterned lanyards with an information card, free of charge. It can help people on the autism spectrum to alert others to their needs, likes and dislikes. Leading Senior Constable Linda Hancock said the idea came from the Chinese community in Box Hill, which implemented a similar project. She said the lanyard was an optional identifier, like a medical alert bracelet. "It can be displayed, or tucked away with the person referring to it in times of need," she said. "It helps them to supply information they may not be in a position to give themselves." The jigsaw is the international logo for autism. Wantirna mum Elizabeth Curran has worked with Lead Sen Const Hancock. She has two sons with autism, now aged 25 and 26. She said the lanyard was about helping other people to realise they're on the spectrum in a discreet way. "Children with autism, there's nothing recognisable," Ms Curran said. "I think it's going to help to really complement a lot of the work that's been going on for a long time. "This is a link to help them communicate. "Some have verbal skills, some don't." She said the lanyards would be of particular help on public transport, and in instances where authorities requested identification.

Keepers said that over the coming months, the youngster would continue to venture out of the pouch, becoming more independent as it learnt from its parents. The wider conservation community has welcomed the new addition, with only 14 species of tree kangaroo recorded and most populations in decline. Mani, Bagam, and their yet to be named little joey are all on display in the Kangaroo Country exhibit.

The autism lanyard is available from police. "The beauty now is there are so many people wearing lanyards," she said. "There's nothing highly unusual about the lanyard. "People in authority will start to learn to recognise that's what the symbol is. "Sometimes their behaviour in the public can be very challenging or disruptive. "They might think they're on drugs or something like that." The lanyards can help not only police, but other parents. Ms Curran has offered to help parents experiencing a meltdown from a child on the spectrum. "Autism is always about a communication issue," she said. "Usually the person with autism doesn't have the skills at the time to communicate about it." To obtain a lanyard, call Leading Senior Constabl Lisa Brooks on 9739 2385 or Lead Sen Const Linda Hancock on 9739 2386, or email lisa.brooks@police.vic.gov.au or linda.hancock@ police.vic.gov.au.

Swooping in By Derek Schlennstedt Don’t be alarmed, but magpie swooping season has officially started. The black and white winged avians have already claimed one victim - Mount Evelyn woman Therese, who on Sunday 9 September posted a photo of her bloody forehead after a run-in with a magpie while walking along the Warburton trail. Facebook has since been beset with similar survival stories warning people to stay away from certain locations around the Yarra Ranges. Speaking to the Mail, Therese said she regularly walked along the trail and that this was her first experience being swooped. “I was just running and then he came from behind me and I didn’t see him coming,” she said. “He was in and out of my head before I knew what happened. “He actually pecked me, I was quite surprised I didn’t think they actually attacked you, just swooped.” A small nick from the bird’s beak caused blood to run over her forehead and a nurse who was walking along the trail came to her aid. “I put my hand on my head and I had blood everywhere,” she said. “The photo didn’t do it justice, a lot came out.” According to wild natives manager Falk Wicker from Healesville Sanctuary, magpies swoop only during mating season in spring when they basically become over-protective parents. The mating season can vary from state to state but is generally between late August and November. Mr Wicker said that magpies swooped because they were trying to deter others from entering their territory and coming close to their young. He suggested that the best response to being swooped was to maintain a normal walking or

Emergency Management Commissioner Andrew Crisp, Wurundjeri Elder Dave Wandin, and teachers Kylie Schabel, Hayley Bawden and Rob Fallon with students Lily, Emmy, Matty, Brody, Aidan and past student Connor.

Students show resilience By Michael Doran Therese from Mount Evelyn was swooped by a magpie while on her walk along the Warburton trail. riding pace and leave the area. “There are different strategies with birds; some birds hide, some try to camouflage but all have very different responses to potential predators,” he said. “With magpies, they are a big black and white bird and are out in the open - their response mechanism cannot rely on camouflage or hiding, so they go right the other way. “They don’t want to hurt you but they want to protect their nest, and they do that by letting you know that you’re on the wrong track.” The best advice is to also avoid areas where swooping magpies are on watch, but the interactive Swooping Magpie Attack Map at MagpieAlert.com shows precisely where previous swooping has occurred. Mr Wicker suggested that hats, sunnies and attaching cable ties to helmets can all help to prevent magpies from swooping.

Dixons Creek Primary has won a state award for resilience. It was the Victorian winner in the school category at the Resilient Australia Awards, and is in the running to win the national award in November. The Australian Institute for Disaster Resilience awards recognise individuals, groups or organisations that demonstrate excellence and innovation in projects and initiatives that support communities to be better prepared and more disaster-resilient. The 2009 Black Saturday fires had a large impact on the school community, with about half of its families directly affected and some students losing their homes. "After Black Saturday, two of our parents had been working with Wurundjeri elders to learn about Indigenous burning practices and decided to attend the National Indigenous Fire Workshop in Cape York in 2016," teacher Hayley Bawden said. "This seeded a project of engaging with the school in order to help the local community deal with fire again."

In essence, the project is about learning the lessons of traditional Indigenous programs used to keep the bush under control through planned burning. Students from Grades 3 to 6 spent time with local and visiting Aboriginal elders learning about the impacts of fire on flora and fauna and then used what they learnt to produce a book, Parent Trees are Talking. The students have spread their message of how fire can be used in a safe and good way to other schools, at conferences and at a Kids teaching Kids seminar at Edendale Community Environment Farm in Eltham. Four students made a presentation at Reconciliation Day celebrations in Healesville and the project was presented to a Disaster Resilient Australia-New Zealand School Education Network meeting. Ms Bawden said the children made speeches about their past and present experiences with fire and how they were trying to educate other community members about Indigenous burning methods. Year 5 and 6 teacher Kylie Schabel is one of project's drivers and will be in Brisbane for the national awards announcement.

World-class concert here Yarra Valley ECOSS will host the Stringmania Camp finale concert. The event will feature musical talent from Scotland, the USA, Canada, China and Sweden as well as Australia. Stringmania is a week-long music camp held in Warburton, now in its third year, where stringed instrument players can explore musical genres with high-calibre tutors from Australia and around the world. This concert is the culmination of the camp, featuring world-class performances from tutors, showcasing what participants have learned during the week, and supporting the Warburton Fire Brigade through donating part of proceeds. “I’m really excited to be bringing such incredibly talented and culturally significant artists from around the world together in Warburton for this camp,” camp co-director Chris

Stone said. “I just couldn’t pass up the opportunity to share these musicians with the local community. “It also gives the camp attendees the opportunity to perform and share some of the music they’ve learnt, and also the energy and passion that flows through this camp. “I love the buzz that an end-of-camp concert like this creates - everyone’s so musically, emotionally and creatively charged!” The concert will feature Scottish fiddle legend Alasdair Fraser and acclaimed cellist Natalie Haas (US), along with Victoria’s own Kavisha Mazzella (song), Greg Sheehan (rhythm) and Emily-Rose Sarkova (tango). Warburton fiddle player Sandi Blake said last year’s Stringmania Camp was so uplifting and nurturing.

“To have such an amazing group of enthusiastic people from all over the world coming to our little town Warburton to create such beautiful music within a week is an outstanding achievement,” she said. The concert will be held at ECOSS, Old Warburton Road, Wesburn, from 7.30pm on Saturday 6 October. Tickets are $15 concession, $20 for adults and $45 for a family, and under-10s can attend free of charge. Tickets are available from www.trybooking. com/416696. All ticket holders are invited to participate in a music workshop at the concert venue at 4pm. Musicians and non-musicians are welcome, and are encouraged to bring along an instrument.

Curator Gretel Taylor appears in a video performance as part of the exhibition. 184775 Picture: ROB CAREW Parking is available across the road at the Wesburn Football Oval. Call 0402 442 511 or visit www.stringmaniacamp.com with any inquiries.

Linking art and nature can be a force Leading visual and performing artists will unleash a Force of Nature in Lilydale. The exhibition will run until Sunday 14 October at Yarra Ranges Museum. Force of Nature considers relationships to local environments and imminent issues on a global scale. Artists Marnie Badham, Peter Fraser, Myfanwy Hunter, Gabrielle New, Jill Orr, Gulsen Ozer, Laki Sideris, Melinda Smith, Gretel Taylor, Tammy Wong-Hulbert and Tony Yap will feature. They’ll respond to environmental change, the influence of nature on their lives and arts practices, and ideas of post-nature. Curator Gretel Taylor has a background in dance and site-responsive performance.

“We want viewers and audiences to feel, sense, move with, think about, question and connect with nature,” she said. “Tactile, embodied art can bring us to that connection.” Force of Nature will present lively art that inspires engagement with nature while fighting for it, mourning its loss, beckoning for connection and imagining future possibilities. It asks viewers to slow down to appreciate new perspectives and engage with nature as a profound experience in its own right. On Fridays throughout the exhibition, from 11am to 4pm, artists Marnie Badham and Tammy Wong-Hulbert will facilitate public participation in their cartographic - or map - artwork.

Prey tell of The Predator By Seth Lukas Hynes The Predator Starring Boyd Holbrook, Jacob Tremblay and Olivia Munn Rated MA15+ The fourth instalment in the Predator film franchise, The Predator is a highly-entertaining yet sloppy ride. Quinn McKenna (Boyd Holbrook), an elite sniper, joins forces with his autistic savant son Rory (Jacob Tremblay), a band of misfit soldiers and a biology teacher (Olivia Munn) to fight a deadly extraterrestrial hunter. The Predator's action scenes are visceral and creatively-staged, and are very effective in developing the film's quirky ensemble of main characters. Writer-director Shane Black also develops his characters through their humorous interplay. Many of the jokes feel strained or out of place in the first act, but the humour soon

finds a more natural equilibrium. The Predator is a gory, thrilling action romp full of personality, but suffers from some severe plot and structure issues. Quinn's initial act of mailing sensitive alien equipment to his son makes no sense, and it takes much of the running time for the heroes to find a clear objective. The film has very erratic pacing, with rushed, poorly-established transitions between set-pieces and some shockingly bad editing. Every main character has heroic moments, but Casey (Munn) endures an irritating double-standard in the comedy. She receives far more belittling humour than the rest of the (predominantly male) cast, including a semigag in the first act that forces her into being naked and vulnerable around the Predator. The Predator is an exciting, ultraviolent ride burdened by messy structure and inept editing.

NEWS

Des's stories will live on By Kath Gannaway William 'Des' Morrish's account of the devastating 1939 bushfires still makes riveting reading. Des told his part of the story 70 years after the event at a commemoration of the fires in Warburton in January 2009. He was just 19 at the time, but that experience, turning out with the then captain of the Warburton Fire Brigade, Mac Spark, was a defining event in his life. He said the weather was punishingly hot and as he was in the fire brigade, he didn't go to work that day. "We had the fire engine up on the aqueduct that went from the O'Shannassy to Silvan and early that morning Harry Martyr, Mac Spark and me had the fire engine up there. "What we thought we were going to do is pump out of the aqueduct and put the bushfire out - that's what we thought we were going to do," he said. "But nothing known to mankind could have stopped that fire on that day." Looking back, it was a chilling premonition of the Black Saturday bushfires that swept across much of the same Victorian landscape just a month later and which led Des to make a submission to the 2009 Bushfire Royal Commission. Bushfires were just a part of his life however. The bush, and in particular the timber industry was his livelihood and his passion from an early age. Des left Warburton to live in Dandenong in 1955, but he was born and bred Warby and returned often. It was almost mandatory that his farewell on 26 July was from Heritage and Heritage Pioneers Chapel in Woori Yallock where photos pay tribute to the sawmillers, fallers, log carters and truck drivers of the timber industry. "This area is Des's old stomping ground ... this was very much part of Des's core," his

Des Morrish in his Dandenong home in 2015. 141676 daughter Judy Brown said. She said he was very proud of the timber artifacts and photos. "Wild horses could not stop him from coming to be a guest speaker at the annual commemoration services held here each year." Des was born on 28 January, 1920, to William and May Morrish and had a younger sister, Ida. He went to Warburton State School, leaving school at 14 during the great depression to work in the local grocery store for 12 shillings and sixpence for a six day week, and long hours. At 16 he went bush - getting a job in a sawmill eight miles from town carting saw dust by wheel barrow. After four years he went into the tall timber country as a high lead rigger, climbing to the top of trees 250 feet high to cut the top off and

He was ambitious and studied during this period to get his steam engine driver's certificate, an important qualification in the industry. After 10 months in the Army during WWII, he was discharged to continue to work in the timber industry, designated as an essential service. Des's son Norm said his dad was a pioneer of the industry. "He would take eight hours to climb 300 feet to cut off all the branches, then lop the tree top off to make a central winching spar tree for the high lead logging system operated by a steam winch," he said looking over the climbing belt he used in the 1940s at the New

Federal Mill near the Ada tree. "Dad was the last survivor of the pioneer logging era, prior to chainsaws and bulldozers." On Saturdays, Des would work in the bush until lunchtime and hot-foot back to town to play football for Warburton. In fact he was a keen sportsman throughout his life participating in bike-riding, woodchopping, athletics and water-skiing as well as lawn bowls later on. Over the years he moved camp several times working on the Acheron Way, in the Mansfield region and in the Dee Valley where his father had logged before him. Des was 24 when, on 23 December 1944, he married local beauty and champion tennis player, Sadie Hook. It was a whirlwind romance and the date fitted in with the Christmas break from working in the bush. They had Norm and Judy, and were together for 64 wonderful years together. They had a busy social life in Dandenong with the Masonic Lodge, and Bowls and Probus clubs, family holidays in the early days and caravanning later in life. Living alone after Sadie passed away Des met a lovely woman, Carma Keast, at the Dandenong Club. They made an impressive couple and found happiness and a renewed zest for life which brought joy to their family and friends. In many tributes, Des was remembered as a man who was an innovator and an adventurer, a hard-worker and a bit of a dare-devil, a gentleman and story-teller, much loved husband, father and grandfather and a loved and respected friend and colleague. He was competitive and would have loved to reach the magic 100 - but it was not to be. Des died on 17 July, in his 98th year. He is survived by Norm and Judy and their families...and his stories will live on.

Hawke is Mr Consistent

Running on the Tan By Jamie Strudley The XCR18 finale was held around the Tan Track in Melbourne on Saturday 15 September. After nine fun rounds of cross-country and road running, the season culminated with the Tan Relays around the famous 3.8 kilometre track. Yarra Ranges Athletics had 10 teams entered in open men, open women, under-18 men, under-18 women and under-14 women, competing alongside 300 other teams from throughout Victoria. Conditions changed throughout the event, providing additional challenges to all athletes. Stars of the show for Yarra Ranges Athletics were its under-18 and under-14 womens teams, which dominated their respective age groups to record convincing wins. The fastest club athletes were Harry Norman (12.08), Dean Tromp (12.40) and Seamus Dwyer (12.56) in the mens teams and Lauren Starr (14.11) and Georgia Laven (14.15). Club results are: Men Division 3 - 3rd Dean Tromp 12.40, Seamus Dwyer 12.56, James Laven 13.22, Max Saville-Bentley 13.24. Men Division 5 - 7th Graham Coutts 15.13, Jamie Strudley 14.57, Bryan Ackerly 15.15. Men Division 7 - 6th Craig Hewitson 16.38, Andrew Searles 14.20, Maxim Somerville 17.02. Men Division 5 - 7th Graham Coutts 15.13, Jamie Strudley 14.57, Bryan Ackerly 15.15. Women Division 2 - 10th Lauren Star 14.18, Sarah Love 17.12, Katie Clarke 18.56. Women Division 4 - 11th Laura Di Gregorio 19.15, Kate Van Dureen 21.25. Women Division 5 - 8th Veida Somerville 15.14, Hannah Wells 20.46. Men Under-18 - 4th Harry Norman 12.08, Harrison Van Duuren 12.59.

By Ron Hottes The Warburton Golf Club competitors had another tough day for scoring on Wednesday 12 September. Kevin Conway headed the field with a creditable +1. Steuart Hawke is the Mr Consistent of the regular Wednesday crew. He snared another runners-up prize by 'squaring' with his handicap. Balls went down to -2. There were only two nearest the pin winners - John Robinson on the ninth and Ossie McClay on the 10th. A match was played on the day; a semi-final to see who would continue onto the final of The Harry-Martyr next month. Tex Van Der Kooi defeated Ken Barratt, 4 and 3. Tex will now play his good friend, Neil Leckerby, so the sparks are likely to fly on that day. On Saturday 15 September, only a smallish field played in the club's stableford competition so there was only one winner - Simon Spenceley, with an impressive 40 points. Nipping at his heels was Junior Kempton, with 39. Those who scored 29+ can collect a ball the next time they are in the clubhouse - 29 is very low for a ball rundown, indicating that the course is clearly winning at this stage of early spring. Nearest the pin balls went to Happy on the third, Junior Kempton on the fifth, Lance Atwell on the ninth, and the inspirational Meredith Nursey on the 15th.

Lauren Starr in the Division 2 Women's competition. Women Under-18 - 1st Georgia Laven 14.15, Grace Muller 15.03. Women Under-14 - 1st Indi Linde 15.00, Kiara Flavel 14.35. Next up is a Yarra Ranges Athletics come and try day on Saturday 22 September from 9am. The club welcomes all athletes of any age or ability. Visit yarrarangesathletics.org.au.
