its history - was intense, finals footy laced with the right amount of class. After a third premiership in four years, the word ‘dynasty’ is deservingly being bandied around, and for good reason. The Wickers have a stranglehold over the south-east region - they’re relentless, driven by success and are always chasing their next challenge. It’s the cornerstone of all successful sporting clubs. While the weather may have been arctic in their 51-point win over Narre Warren, the Wickers put in a magical performance befitting of a champion team in the midst of a golden era. By late on Saturday afternoon, the scoreboard at Garfield’s Beswick Street ground had people headed straight to the history books... for all the wrong reasons. Kooweerup entered the senior West Gippsland Football Netball Competition grand final against Phillip Island as the underdog. The Demons had defeated the Bulldogs twice in the home and away season, but lost by 10 goals to them in the semi-final stage. So the boys from the Island deserved their favouritism, and Saturday’s result - a premiership win - would have surprised no one. It’s the margin that set tongues wagging, as the Bulldogs won by 99 points and kept the Demons goalless in the process - 14.18 (102) to 0.3 (3). It led to the questions: ‘When was the last time a senior side was kept goalless in a grand final?’ and even ‘Had it ever happened before?’ To say it was an utter annihilation somehow doesn’t do it justice. For the Demons, it was an unmitigated disaster. After the season they had, finishing level with the Island as part of a four-way share of the ladder lead, they didn’t deserve the humiliation of the final result. But that’s football - often harsh, often cruel, always ruthless. Sadly for the Demons, the decider was as non-competitive as the scoreboard indicated particularly over the final three quarters. The boys from the Island - captained by former Narre Warren and Cora Lynn gun Brendan Kimber - dominated in all facets of a clash that sent shockwaves through the west Gippsland footy community. Yet Kooweerup still had reason to celebrate on Saturday night, and no doubt right through to Monday, with its reserves side claiming its second straight premiership, and the fourths also emerging victorious. Meanwhile, in the South East Football Netball League decider, Berwick’s intensity from the opening bounce until the final siren simply couldn’t be matched. The Wickers’ premiership victory against Narre Warren on Saturday - giving the club back-to-back flags for just the second time in
