After three premierships in four years, Berwick are enjoying their most successful era. 185297 Picture: ROB CAREW
Berwick’s belter Berwick's intensity from the opening bounce until the final siren simply can't be matched. Their premiership victory against Narre Warren on Saturday - giving the club back-toback flags for just the second time in club history - was intense, finals footy laced with the right amount of class. After a third premiership in four years, the word 'dynasty' is deservingly being bandied around, and for good reason.
The club has a stranglehold over the southeast region - they're relentless, driven by success and are always chasing their next challenge. It's the cornerstone of all successful sporting clubs. While the weather may have been arctic in their 51-point win over Narre Warren, the Wickers put in a magical performance befitting of a champion team in the midst of a golden era. From the superstar Travis Tuck, who came to the club with a high expectation that has
now culminated with a best on ground medal in a grand final, to their champion skipper Madi Andrews, dynamic forward Harry Money, gun midfielder Bryce Rutherford and reliable defenders Jo West and Michael Riseley, the Wickers possess remarkable star power. "We pride ourselves on our relentless approach," Berwick coach Stewart Kemperman said in the aftermath of another premiership win. And as for Kemperman, he couldn't have a dreamt of a start to his senior coaching career

- two premierships in two years. Not only is the former Noble Park champion blessed with an incredible squad, but he's a forward thinker, a modern day coach with an incredible tactical nous. The foundations are set, and as the club embarks on a new era in AFL Outer East, it seems the Wickers show no signs of slowing down. Turn to sport for more about a golden day for the Wickers in the final ever grand final of the South East Football Netball League.

THE LOWDOWN With Peter Dumesny, Narre Warren gardener and landscaper
What is something people don't know about you? I have an identical twin brother. What was your most memorable moment? The birth of my two children. What's the best thing about gardening/landscaping? Working outdoors.
THREE … ways to quit smoking
1
Build a plan Set a quit date and use that as your target. It helps to have a clear goal in your mind; one that you can remember. As the date approaches, do a cigarette detox of your personal and home environments. Round up all the ashtrays, all the loose cigarettes, all the lighters and throw them away - remove any reminders of cigarettes from your life.
2
Consider risky situations Understanding your triggers and the situations that drive you to cigarettes will help you to quit successfully. If you're used to having a cigarette with a wine, avoid Friday night drinks to begin with. Swap your habit of smoking with a good habit - when a craving strikes instead of lighting up, go for a walk, grab a glass of water, or call a friend.
3
Choose your methods Decide on the quitting approach that will work best for you. There are heaps of products, books, courses and methods out there. Quit Victoria recommends combining a nicotine replacement therapy patch with another nicotine replacement therapy product such as lozenges, spray or gum and also coaching from Quitline 13 7848.
What is your favourite movie? Terminator 2. If you were PM for a day, what would you do ? Give public schools more resources. At school I...... At school I was a great cross country runner. Where is your favourite holiday destination? Great Barrier Reef. Which six guests dead or alive, would you invite to dinner? Greg Norman, Princess Di, Tiger Woods, Tom Cruise, Jon Bon Jovi and John F. Kennedy. What's your favorite book? The Adventures of Tintin. Best concert you have been to? AC/DC.

College gets $3.9m upgrade promise
By Cam Lucadou-Wells An ice user who embarked on a month's spree of armed robberies in the South East has been jailed. Christopher Randell, 31, pleaded guilty to five armed robberies and two attempted armed robberies in July and August last year. Often wearing a dark hoodie and sunglasses, Randell wielded a blade, such as either a tomahawk, box-cutter knife or black-handled kitchen knife, the County Court of Victoria heard. The robberies occurred at so-called "soft targets" - Subway restaurants at Berwick and Hallam, tobacco shops at Cranbourne and Hallam, a newsagency at Pearcedale, a toy store at Ferntree Gully and a video outlet at Beaconsfield. During each hold-up, Randell demanded and took cash ranging from several hundred dollars to about $1520. On two occasions, attendants yelled for help and he fled without money. He was arrested after police identified his father's registered vehicle at one of the robberies. During sentencing on 19 September, Judge Julie Condon noted that Randell claimed that he had been trying to repay a drug debt. He was feeding a $300-a-day 'ice' habit at the time, the court heard. Judge Condon noted Randell's early guilty plea, stated remorse, his family's support on release and that he'd find prison more onerous because of his mental illness. Randell was jailed for up to five years, four months - including 411 days in pre-sentence custody. His non-parole period extends for three years, five months.

Works on new sports pavilions kick-off The City of Casey has this week celebrated the start of construction on two projects that will deliver new and improved pavilions at two of Casey's sports reserves. Council, the state government and members of the associated sporting clubs came together at Jack Thomas Reserve in Narre Warren North on Wednesday, 12 September and Sweeney Reserve in Berwick on Thursday, 13 September to officially kick-off major redevelopments of the sports pavilions at each location. The $2.9m Jack Thomas Reserve project will deliver a much-needed new pavilion for Berwick City Soccer Club including six change rooms, a social room, amenities, kitchen, office, referee and storage spaces and undercover spectator viewing areas. The $2.01m Sweeney Reserve project will demolish the existing softball pavilion and build a new and improved facility with a community room, four change rooms, associated amenities, public toilets, referee rooms, storage facilities, office, kitchen and first-aid room. City of Casey Mayor Cr Geoff Ablett said it was great to see these projects get underway. "Both of the existing pavilions at these reserves were out-dated and no longer met the needs of the Berwick City Soccer Club and Casey Softball Association, who have both experienced huge growth in members and par-

"These new and improved pavilions will help these clubs better cater to growing demand in their respective sports, support participation particularly for women and girls, help the clubs continue to thrive and provide a more welcoming environment for their members. "It was great to officially celebrate the start of construction on these two projects and hear the excitement from the clubs that these much-needed new facilities are on the way." Both projects are jointly funded by the council and the state government.
The state government contributed $1.73m under the Growing Suburbs Fund and $100,000 from the Female Friendly Facilities Fund towards the Jack Thomas Reserve project, with the council funding the remaining $1.075m. The Sweeney Reserve project also received $1.21m through the Growing Suburbs Fund and $100,000 from the Female Friendly Facilities Fund, with the council contributing $703,000. "Council thanks the state government for their contribution towards these projects, ensuring council can get on with delivering them for the community," Cr Ablett added.

Have a great night out and help the community at the same time. That’s the premise of the Casey Cardinia Foundation’s annual charity dinner, to be held this year on Friday 12 October at the Cardinia Cultural Centre. Renowned as one of the region’s best nights out, the charity dinner this year features the amazing Baker Boys band. Foundation chairman Paul Thomas expects this year’s dinner to be another great night. “Guests enjoy an evening of great live entertainment, while making a difference to the community at the same time,” Mr Thomas said. “Their support helps the Casey Cardinia
Foundation reduce the community’s disadvantage, poverty, distress and growth challenges.” The Foundation has presented the “not to be missed” program of entertainment since 2004. In that time it has raised more than $550,000 for the local community and over $67,500 in 2017 alone. By attending the evening, guests help the Foundation raise funds to support local community groups in the Casey Cardinia region, to make a real difference in the lives of many. The evening features something for everyone, with an assortment of major auction items plus a silent auction and raffle. The annual charity dinner will be held on
Friday 12 October at the Cardinia Cultural Centre, with guests arriving at 6.30pm for a 7pm start. The cost is $135 per head or $1350 for a table of 10. To purchase tickets online, go to www.trybooking.com/357084

Prep students at Berwick Lodge Primary School had the chance to do some planting with Kasandra from Bunnings on Friday, 14 September. They planted different seedlings in the schools beloved Community Garden - a garden specifically made to encourage and teach students about sustainability. With spring and planting season finally here, the preps were really able to get their hands dirty. "Planting was so much fun," prep student Declan said. Student James said, "I'm really looking forward to seeing them all grow." This term the prep grades have been learning about sustainability in a unit called 'I'm a Planeteer'. With 'Eco Warriors' advocating for a clean school during lunch times, their mascot 'Wilbur the Worm' visiting homes to discover sustainability, and recycling old supermarket boxes and containers to make into toys or different projects, they have had so much fun. Student Jonoel said that he loved the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) activities that used recycled materials and student Joshua enjoyed reusing old things for building because he wants to be a construction worker. "With one week to go, term three is nearly over and our Berwick Lodge Planeteers will be reflecting on what they have learned," prep teacher Carla Conway said. "From their actions it really makes us think about what we are doing to help our planet and gives us time to remember those famous words made popular by Dr Seuss' The Lorax, 'Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not.'"

Casey Cardinia Libraries have joined Victoria's Public Libraries and State Library Victoria in a new campaign to highlight the economic and social benefits that libraries bring to communities right across the state. 'Libraries Change Lives' is designed to build community support and attract additional state government funding for the state's 272 public libraries, which receive more than 30 million visitors a year. New economic modelling demonstrates that every dollar invested in Casey Cardinia's public libraries generates $5.00 benefits for the state (SGS Economics Libraries Work! The Socio-Economic Value of Public Libraries to Victorians 2018). CCL CEO Chris Buckingham said: "More than 1.2 million people visit our branches ev-

ery year. More people are using public libraries than ever before. We now have more than 120,000 members in the Casey Cardinia Region." It's still news to many Victorians that public libraries offer free access to the internet, e-books and online magazines, newspapers, Wi-Fi, computers, meeting rooms, literacy support, English language classes and in some locations even recording studios. Public libraries offer an incredible breadth of services to support community members at every stage of life. Cr Wayne Smith, chairman Casey Cardinia Libraries said, "No other institution offers the same personal help, equal and free access to information, social engagement, and sense of safety and belonging.
"Libraries are facing escalating demand for space, longer opening hours, expanded programs and access to online services. "We want to meet those community expectations, but we need more State Government funding to do it." The Libraries Change Lives campaign launch for the Casey Cardinia region will be held at Bunjil Place Library on Thursday, 4 October at 10am. Everyone is welcome, the event will include an interactive expo on the amazing programs and services Casey Cardinia Libraries provide the community. There will also be opportunities for attendees to share their stories on how libraries have changed their life. For more information go to ccl.vic.gov.au. berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au

Berwick massage banned A Clyde North/Berwick massage therapist has been banned from providing any general health services for up to 12 weeks while an investigation is conducted. Health Complaints Commissioner Karen Cusack said separate 12-week Interim Prohibition Orders were made against Michael Sergides, trading as 'Mobile Just Massage', and his company, Regtan Nominees Pty Ltd, in order to protect the public while a full investigation was carried out. The investigation was launched following a complaint made to the Health Complaints Commissioner (HCC) earlier this month. Mr Sergides received the ban under the general code of conduct that applies to all health
service providers outside the national registration scheme, including massage therapists. The general code of conduct contained in the Health Complaints Act 2016 closed the gap in regulation for healthcare where alternative practitioners could not be held accountable for failing to provide services in a safe and ethical manner. Ms Cusack said that while she couldn't release details of the complaint for confidentiality reasons, she felt it necessary to ban Mr Sergides from providing any general health services in order to protect the public. "I don't issue these orders lightly but I'm satisfied that this was necessary to avoid a serious risk to the health, safety or welfare of Victori-
ans," Ms Cusack said. "The interim prohibition orders prohibit Mr Sergides and Regtan Nominees Pty Ltd from advertising, offering or providing any general health service, paid or otherwise, in a clinical or non-clinical capacity while we conduct a full investigation into the complaint we've received." If you have quality or safety concerns about a massage therapist, or any other health service in Victoria, contact the HCC on 1300 582 113. "Along with complaints resolution, one of the ways the HCC supports safe and ethical healthcare in Victoria is by investigating providers who pose a serious risk to the public," she said. "We rely on Victorians to come forward with
their concerns so that we're aware of possible breaches of the general code of conduct. We can then work independently and impartially to establish the facts and understand what measures, if any, should be taken to protect the public." Minister for health Jill Hennessy said, "Patients put their trust and faith in their health services provider and anyone who breaches that privilege must be stopped in their tracks. "We've established the Health Complaints Commissioner and beefed up her powers to ensure anyone who flouts the rules or misuses their position of power are weeded out and met with the full force of the law."

Berwick Pharmacy and Eden Rise Pharmacy got behind the footy colours day on Friday, 7 September. "We all had our usual great fun and our fundraising continues on beyond the day, with raffles, jelly bean competition and the design your footy jumper competition until the AFL grand final day," Berwick Pharmacy and Eden Rise Pharmacy retail manage Jaki Crow said. During the month of September, Aussies are encouraged to show their true colours in support of kids with cancer. With more than 800 Australian children and young people diagnosed with cancer every year, Footy Colours Day raises much needed funds for Fight Cancer Foundation's education support programs across Australia.

Sleep Apnoea is a condition that is extremely common in today’s society. 80 per cent of people suffering from the affliction go undiagnosed. There she discovered her love for problem solving and innovative thinking. Talented people hack it GovHack met members of the Casey community over a three day even held in Narre Warren. Around 50 people attended over the three days including participants, mentors, volunteers and Council officials. There were seven teams competing this year, many of whom took on the Casey 'Movers and Shakers challenge'. Some notable projects included students from Federation University who won the 'Best of Casey' award for their work completing a project on road maintenance that could utilise Internet of Things devices. A team of talented students also attended from Haileybury College and these students created a neural network for making efficient decisions on how to increase local employment. Another team created a portal for correlating disparate data sets and trending the data in Power BI. "Enthusiasm was very high when the participants, mentors and volunteers arrived for the launch of GovHack Casey 2018," City of Casey transformation office manager Clint Allsop said. "This year's participants came from a variety of industries and institutions including entrepreneurs, developers, data analysts, engineers, designers, digital media creators, artists, film makers, story tellers, academics, researchers, youth and civic enthusiasts. "After a weekend of working with government data to invent and create, all participants managed to lodge a project by the 5pm deadline on Sunday which is a fantastic achievement." Mr Allsop said for Council to operate as efficiently as possible while delivering for such a large and growing municipality, they must evolve and use data as effectively as possible. "Hosting GovHack and being a state sponsor enabled Council to gather talented people to collaborate, share ideas and propose solutions to local Casey community challenges," he said.
The Whole Hackers team. 184946 GovHack is a huge international event that brings people together to innovate, collaborate and apply their creative skills to open government data. It is run in a number of different locations across Australia and New Zealand. The City of Casey is one of them. Haileybury's ICT Explorers swept the competition at the 2018 Young ICT Explorers State Final held recently at Deakin University. This is the third year in a row that the Years 9 and 10 team have won their division. The Year 9 Boys team placed first with their life size version of BB8, the popular robot from Star Wars. BB8 has an Arduino brain equipped with the Google Assistant AI and is bluetoothed controlled via an android app with internal rollers for movement. The Year 7 Girls team also won their division with their design for an interactive baby high chair featuring a heat sensor, light up buttons, light sensors and an Arduino electronic platform. These elements achieve an engaging environment for young children to play and eat. The temperature reader detects the temperature of the food on the child's plate to ensure that they are not eating food that is too hot. Haileybury was the largest represented school at the competition, with a total of 50 students from the Keysborough and Berwick campuses. The Young ICT Explorer competition enables students to apply what they learn in Computing and Digital Technologies classes to develop a technology related project of their choice. The aim of the challenge is to encourage school students to not just use technology but also become creators and innovators of

digital technology. Year 7 student, Neeraja Ahielan was shocked by the win and grateful for the opportunity to explore technology topics. "The experience has definitely improved our view on technology in the real world and its impact on our generation," he said. "After winning this competition we have learned to appreciate other inventions and how they help our daily life." Haileybury also placed second and third in the Years 7 and 8 division and third place in the Years 9 and 10 division. The winning teams will compete in the National Finals in Sydney this December.

Expert treatment for foot, knee and leg pain Feet and legs are vital for mobility and balance and are the basis of most daily activities, so it’s no wonder most people suffer foot, knee or leg pain at some point in their lives. Dr Paul Dowie, one of Australia’s leading musculoskeletal podiatrists, foot and leg pain expert and founder of Foot and Leg Pain Clinics, recently shed some light on common foot and leg concerns. “Foot, heel, ankle, knee and hip pain, injury and arthritis are often misdiagnosed and incorrectly treated, so it’s important to find an experienced, designated musculoskeletal podiatrist to assist,” Dr Dowie said. “Bad foot posture can continually pull your body out of alignment, which can contribute to undue stress on the feet and other joints and tissues within the legs, knees and hips.” Dr Dowie explained that even long-term injuries and degenerative conditions can now be successfully treated, without medications or surgery, thanks to natural regenerative treat-

anti-inflammatory medications and joint arthroscopies have been found to delay healing and cause further tissue damage in many cases, so it’s important to get accurate advice from someone who particularly specializes in foot and leg biomechanics and musculoskeletal medicine,” Dr Dowie said. “By combining the very latest medically researched treatments with a sound knowledge of musculoskeletal and regenerative medicine, lower limb biomechanics and load management strategies, we can assist stresses through joints and tissues, aid or eradicate pain, increase mobility, repair injuries and regenerate tissues - safely and naturally. “Foot and Leg Pain Clinics have treated some of the world’s best athletes and thousands of people of all ages suffering foot and leg pain.” To book an appointment with Dr Dowie at the Foot and Leg Pain Clinic in Berwick, call 1300 328 300.

Wrinkles often appear around the forehead and eyes when we smile or frown and these areas can be treated along with crow’s feet, using a well studied safe medication that suits all skin types, administered only by our qualified medical professional.

Skin Needling: Skin needling is a skin rejuvenation treatment that helps stimulate collagen and elastin to promote smoother, healthier skin through a natural healing process. This treatment is suitable for all skin types and is designed to support skin regeneration to help conditions including acne scars, surgical scars/scarring, stretch marks, fine lines, pigmentation, enlarged pores, blackheads and mild textural irregularities and is suitable for treatment during the summer months.
Doveton Medical Centre
Laser, radio frequency and intense pulse light: Laser, radio frequency and intense pulse light is used to treat conditions related to skin damage and premature aging such as fine lines, wrinkles, redness, acne scars, broken capillaries, pigmentation, melasma, age spots and general photo rejuvenation. Non ablative skin rejuvenation uses radio frequencies to improve the appearance of wrinkles, brown spots and minor scars by creating heat in the skin with out injuring the surface of the skin. The heat generated promotes collagen production which results in tighter, healthier, younger Iooking skin. Treatments are suitable to most skin types. Free men’s health event It's one of those things that can be difficult to talk about, embarrassing to address and sometimes easier to leave untreated. Men's health issues - erectile dysfunction, enlarged prostate (BPH) and urinary incontinence - are often brushed under the carpet and ignored, yet they can cause many difficulties in day to day life. But St John of God Berwick Hospital is making it easier for men to learn more and to get help. Mr Shekib Shahbaz and Mr Tony de Sousa, Urological Surgeons at St John of God Berwick Hospital, understand this reluctance to seek medical advice and are hosting a free men's health event to create a safe and comfortable environment for men to learn more about these issues. The session will be held on Monday 22 October at Harkaway Pubic Hall (56-58 King Road, Harkaway) and will focus on erectile
dysfunction, enlarged prostate (BPH) and male urinary incontinence. "It may be reassuring for men to know that what they are experiencing is common and that they are not alone. Presenting this sensitive health information to a group can help to normalise topics which in the past have been taboo and associated with shame or embarrassment," Mr Shahbaz said. Mr de Sousa echoes this sentiment. "This forum enables men to reach out for advice and expert medical opinion. We don't want men and their partners suffering in silence," he said. Those wanting to learn more are invited to come along to this free men's health seminar and meet Shekib and Tony. Both Urologists are based in Berwick working from St John of God Berwick Hospital and Casey public hospital. Please call 1300 427 332 to register interest.

Beware of new treatments Urologist Philip McCahy of the South East Vasectomy Clinic says that there are commonly seen situations that should raise alarm for any patients seeking surgical treatment. Mr McCahy explained that the first is when a new treatment, be it for cancer, hernias or prostate problems, is announced with great media fanfare. "This can happen either because said treatment has been presented at a major international meeting or because the sponsor of the treatment has asked for some publicity," he said. "Most of the time any results are very early and there has been no peer-reviewed publication - the gold standard in medical research. "There are countless examples of these new wonder treatments that have not stood the test of time and been eventually abandoned. The announcements cause confusion for patients and frustration amongst doctors as patients often ask for the new, unproven treatment." The second scenario is when a new technology seems to make certain treatments easier for the surgeon. "The treatment is then enthusiastically taken up by specialists who did not, or could not, use the old technology because they were either not trained or had no special interest in that area. "In these circumstances, the overall results of treatment are often worse, with many patients being inappropriately advised by specialists who are not in possession of all the facts. "As this is not a new treatment, but a variation on existing practice, there is no need for clinical trials and it may take many years before the results of comparison trials are available that may show the new technology has

tection for you and your partner." It is estimated that around one in every six people will get an STI - and most don't even know it. Chief preventive health officer Dr Bruce Bolam said STI Testing Week - with the theme Talk, Test, Treat - is a timely reminder for sexually active people to be aware, to take action and help stop the spread of STIs. "If you're having sex with a new partner or don't always use a condom, it's recommended that you get an STI test," Dr Bolam said. "STIs often have no signs or symptoms, and testing will ensure you and your partner don't have to live with potentially serious, long-term consequences from a treatable infection." "This week we are highlighting the importance of regular STI testing, where and how to get treatment, and how to take a proactive approach to sexual health to help prevent STIs. "It is important to let your sexual partner or partners know if you have an STI so that they too can be treated. This discussion is a vital step in preventing further infection in the community." STI testing is available from your local doctor, family planning clinics, community health services, Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations and specialist sexual health clinics. Tests are quick, easy and confidential. For more information visit www.betterhealth.vic. gov.au/STI

We welcome all individuals and families to our practice.
A surge in sexually transmissible infections (STIs) in Casey is prompting calls for locals to look after their own sexual health and get tested. To mark the second STI Testing Week, 9-15 September 2018, the Department of Health and Human Services is encouraging all Victorians to start talking about STIs, to get tested and to seek treatment. "The last decade has seen record increases in STIs such as chlamydia, gonorrhoea and syphilis, here and across Australia," deputy chief health officer Dr brett Sutton said. "In 2017, Victoria had the highest number of STIs reported since records began in 1991." Between 2012 and 2017 in Casey, population rates of gonorrhoea have risen by 209 per cent. "While this can be associated with more testing, improved testing technology and a growing population, this rise is also linked to changing sexual behaviours," Dr Sutton said. "In particular, social media, dating websites and apps are changing the way we meet, connect and form relationships. "There are many types of STIs. The good news is most are curable and all are treatable. If left untreated, they can cause long term effects on the body, including infertility. "STIs don't care about age, sexuality, income or where you live. If you're having sex, the best way to prevent STI transmission is to always use a condom - they are the best pro-

The boys from back-to-back South East Football Netball League senior premier Berwick celebrate in the rooms after their big win over Narre Warren. 185297
Pictures: ROB CAREW
They’re kings of the SEFNL By Nick Creely SOUTH EAST FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE REVIEW - SENIOR GRAND FINAL It was a magic performance befitting of a champion team in the midst of a golden era. Back-to-back premierships, and their third flag in four years - for just the second time in the Wickers' history - are now in the hands of the mighty club at Edwin Flack Reserve. While the weather was stifling, the Wickers refused to let the conditions dictate them - they played like a side that ignores the external noise and only focuses on what they can control. They brought the heat early against Matt Shinners' Narre Warren, with competition leading goal kicker Harry Money using his class to snap the first major of the afternoon. Despite the Magpies peppering the goals early but crucially unable to capitalise, the Wickers remained calm and quickly asserted control over the contest, with the key midfield battle already being dictated by the likes of Travis Tuck, Madi Andrews, Bryce Rutherford and Bailey Asher, who were winning the ball at the coalface. While Andrews clearly wasn't at his best after a delayed end to the season, his class was evident with many little kicks to break the game open. A 50 metre roost from gun playmaker Ash Smith gave the Wickers the only other goal of the first quarter, and they went into the first break holding a nine-point advantage. But the Magpies actually had an equal amount of scoring shots, and did look dangerous going into attack, and only needed to clean up their conversion on goal and work on bringing the ball into dangerous spots and they would be right in the contest. As dynamic in the wet as he is in the dry, Tim Gunn used his goal nous to quickly find the big sticks twice early in the second, and despite Aaron Wilson slotting the opening major for the Magpies, the Wickers controlled the tempo of the game, and crucially, were able to put it on the scoreboard. A factor in the slippery conditions, Tuck's hands in tight traffic were a joy to watch, and he pushed forward in the latter stages of the second quarter to thread the needle tight up against the boundary to help his side take in a 29-point lead. For the Magpies, they were simply kicking the ball long under extreme pressure, and it was easy pickings for the likes of Jo West, Michael Riseley and Reece Piper, who were stationed in the perfect position to intercept, and 44 STAR NEWS

pivotally attack from the back half. As the wind picked up, and the rain remained relentless, so did the pressure of the Wickers across the ground, but they couldn't quite put the nail in the coffin after play resumed in the second half, scoring nine points for the quarter despite completely blanketing the Magpies' run. While a lot of the points came from difficult shots in the conditions, it kept the door slightly ajar for a charge from Shinners' group. After the Wickers kicked three unanswered majors in the final term to push the margin out to 51-points at the final siren, 8.25 (73) to 2.10 (22) coach Stewart Kemperman praised his side for its intensity all day. "We pride ourselves on our relentless approach," an emotional Kemperman said in the rooms after the game. "We got that level right today, and clearly our execution in front of goal wasn't great, but to get the opportunity to score comes as a result of our application and intensity." On another golden grand final day for the Wickers, Luke Jellyman-Turner, Brody Connelly, Michael Riseley, Will Arthurson, Ashley Smith and Bryce Rutherford were all superb throughout the contest, and provided plenty of drive all over the ground.
"I'm obviously happy, but I'm really proud of the guys - they're incredible, a great bunch of blokes," Kemperman said of his playing group and football club. "I'm privileged to coach these guys, I really am, and I don't take that for granted. "I was a bit emotional on the bench late in the game, to be honest, and I'm absolutely over the moon. It's a wonderful feeling. "For them to get the result, not only for me, but for Glenn (Gambetta) after the game is incredible - he does an enormous amount of work for our football club. "As a president with a small committee, it's great we can get the win for them and the club, it's really, really pleasing. "Seeing the supporters, and the delight it brings to them, and seeing the emotion that it brings our amazing president, and everyone that works so hard and puts in so much work, that's what gives me the most satisfaction as the coach. "For me, looking around the room and seeing all the smiles, it's the culmination of all the hard work that's been done around the place, that's why I do it, and that's why I will continue to do it in the future." It was truly the year of the Eagle in the other grades, with Cranbourne securing a surprise
but incredible reserves premiership and Beaconsfield going back-to-back in the under 19s, rubber stamping themselves as arguably the most exciting group of players to come through in recent memory. The dominance of Luke Young's highly talented under 19 squad once again proved too much to handle for Berwick in almost torrential conditions, claiming back-to-back premierships in the comfortable 10.8 (68) to 4.5 (29) victory. Impressive youngster Cody Weightman was duly awarded the best on ground medal for his tremendous display in trying conditions. A few hours later, Cranbourne pulled off a stunner, snaring a reserves premiership from the highly fancied Narre Warren, 8.4 (52) to 3.8 (26). The Magpies finished three games clear on the home and away ladder, and in the early exchanges, it seemed a formality that Paul Hamilton's well drilled side - who were riding a wave of finals momentum - would be too classy and experienced. In a superb game of football after an early health scare in the season, the young Nick Darbyshire was a worthy winner of the best on ground medal, in a sensational individual effort.

Molineux - one of the finest female products to come out of the Gippsland region and one of the Panthers’ gun players in the Women’s Premier Cricket competition - has been chosen as one of five Victorians in the 13-player squad to take on New Zealand in a three-match Twenty20 series starting on 29 September. The 20-year-old - who was born in Bairnsdale before joining Dandenong ahead of the 2013/14 season - has scored 738 runs at 28.38 in her time at Shepley Oval, and has also contributed 29 wickets at 16.76 with her left arm orthodox. Just last season, Molineux scored a brutal 115 as skipper of the Panthers in a match against Melbourne, and topped the runs for her home club in a brilliant year that also included three Twenty20’s for Australia. The first match will be played on 29 September at North Sydney Oval, followed by a match on 1 October at Allan Border Field in Brisbane, finishing with a clash on 5 October at Manuka Oval in Canberra. Siddle, 33, also a Gippsland boy after growing up in Morwell, has been a Dandenong legend since joining the club in 2001/02 at the age of just 16, and has carved out an extraordinary career at Premier, Domestic and International levels. As a Premier cricketer with the Panthers, Siddle was one of the greats before elite commitments made his appearances rare from 2008 onwards, taking 154 wickets in his 86 matches while also contributing 369 runs.
Last year, Siddle snared 6/45 in Dandenong’s premiership win against Fitzroy-Doncaster, his first game in almost four years at his home club, a special performance from a man that loves to give back to the club that gave him a start in his career. Known for his lion-hearted bowling style in his 62-game Test career, Siddle returns to the national set-up ahead of an away Test series against Pakistan, in what will be his first game in almost two years of toiling away for Victoria. The Aussies will kick off their tour in Dubai against Pakistan on 7 October, before playing a second match against them on 16 October at Abu Dhabi. In other cricket news, Cricket Victoria will adopt a similar style to the Big Bash League in the inaugural Victorian Super Slam, with clubs in the Victorian Premier Cricket able to boost their squads for the Twenty20 tournament with a draft-life recruiting policy. All players who want to be a part of the tournament - whether at Premier or local level - will need to register and indicate the side they wish to play for, before each club will submit a 15-man squad for the tournament and have until 1 October to put together a desired Twenty20 team. Any unsigned players are then available for clubs to select from if their squads are incomplete. The Super Slam will be split into two conferences, with Casey-South Melbourne part of the Melbourne Stars conference that will include Kingston Hawthorn, Camberwell Magpies, Dandenong, Ringwood, Frankston Peninsula, Monash Tigers, St Kilda and Prahran, while the Melbourne Renegades conference will be made up of mostly city-based clubs. Both conference winners will then go to a national competition.

Casey’s tilt at flag glory By Hayley Wildes The Casey Demons are off to the big dance. In what was a thrilling encounter at North Port Oval on Saturday afternoon, the Demons were able to get the job done when it mattered most against Essendon. In wet and windy conditions, it was a battle of epic proportions and Casey's trademark pressure and work around the contest proved to be the difference. Jeff Garlett - who was dangerous all day got Casey off to the perfect start with a set shot goal just one minute into the contest, but the Bombers responded with the next two. In a tough first quarter, with neither team taking a backwards step, Bernie Vince - in his return from a shoulder injury - slotted a fine running goal to have Casey one-point in front at the first break. The Demons dominated general play in the second quarter but despite their 17-3 inside 50 advantage, only managed two goals to Essendon's three in the term. At the main break, scores were locked at 39all. The work of Tom Bugg, Bernie Vince, James Munro and Corey and Josh Wagner was crucial in the first half as they drove the ball forward, despite the poor efficiency once the ball got inside 50. After two early Essendon goals, the game turned into a complete arm-wrestle in the third quarter. It took a Cam Pedersen onehanded mark and goal at the 22-minute mark of the quarter to break the deadlock. It was a welcome goal for Casey fans after enduring 34 minutes of play without a major. The Demons faithful didn't have to wait long for their next goal as Garlett snapped a beauty one minute later. The Bombers answered, but at the 28-minute mark of the quarter the momentum shifted in Casey's favour when a deliberate rush be-
hind from Essendon handed Pedersen a set shot from a tight angle, which he calmly put through. Casey's fight back saw them trail by just one-point with a quarter to play. James Munro - who thrived in the testing conditions - got Casey off to a brilliant start with a goal just 45 seconds into the fourth quarter. The next 20 minutes of football was exactly what finals football is all about - tough, uncompromising and completely enthralling. It was Garlett who stepped up and delivered when the game was there to be won. A set shot goal at the 22-minute mark had Casey leading by 13 points. A late goal to Essendon's Dylan Clarke gave his side some hope, but Casey booked its place in the grand final with a hard-fought eightpoint win, 10.13 (73) to 10.5 (65). VFL-listed players Corey Wagner and James Munro were enormous in the wet conditions, while Jay Kennedy-Harris, Bernie Vince, Tom Bugg and Jeff Garlett (three goals) kept their names in discussion for an AFL call-up as Melbourne pushes deep into the AFL finals. Casey's attention now quickly shifts to Box Hill, which earned its place in the decider with an intense one-point win over Williamstown on Sunday. The Seagulls had a chance to win the game with the last kick of the day, but Jaylon Thorpe's set shot from a tight angle just drifted wide. Sunday's VFL grand final kicks off from 3.20pm at Etihad Stadium and both teams will enter the decider with confidence. Casey's road to grand final has seen the side defeat Geelong by 91 points in the qualifying final, before taking care of Essendon on Saturday. Box Hill's path has been more difficult; a rare overtime win against Port Melbourne in an elimination final, a 29-point semi-final victory over Geelong, and then the thrilling one-
Captain Jack Hutchins will lead Casey out in Sunday's VFL grand final. 182653 point win over Williamstown. Casey captain Jack Hutchins will lead his team out in the big dance and dreams of lifting that trophy on Sunday afternoon. "It would certainly be the dream, that's for sure. It's the reason why you play footy; for the mateship and the chance to win premierships," Hutchins said.

"We came really close in 2016 but fell just short and that will always sit with you - no matter where you go that doesn't change and you've got to deal with that. "To give ourselves the opportunity this year to have another crack at it is definitely exciting."
Casey Demons granted state league netball licence By Hayley Wildes In what is an exciting development for netball in the local community, the Casey Demons have been awarded a licence to play in the Victoria Netball League (VNL) from 2019. The VNL is the premier netball competition in the state and earlier this month the Demons were among 10 clubs granted licences to compete from season 2019, with the licences valid from 2019-2023. Netball Victoria CEO Rosie King welcomed the Demons and talked about the importance of the league to netball across Australia. "We are pleased to accept the applications of nine current clubs and look forward to welcoming the Casey Demons to the league in 2019," King said. "The success and importance of the league is evident in Suncorp Super Netball, arguably the world's best domestic competition, with 18 Victorian athletes, nine Victorian training partners, 11 Victorian coaches and five umpires participating in the 2018 season." The VNL season kicks off in April 2019
and Casey recently announced the appointment of Robynn Pym as head coach for the Demons' inaugural VNL season. Pym has enjoyed an accomplished netball coaching career thus far and will be looking to add to that when she leads the Demons in 2019. She has been involved in the VNL/ State league for over 25 years, coached junior Victorian teams and was an assistant coach with the Victoria Fury. Her involvement with the Victorian junior netball talent pathway and local leagues make her the perfect person to lead Casey forward and grow the sport in the region. Most recently, Pym was the senior coach at the Berwick Netball Club in season 2018. Last week, Robynn Pym, Casey Netball board members and Casey VFL representatives gathered at Casey Fields to celebrate the successful licence bid. Registration is now open for selection to join Casey Demons Netball in the VNL in the 19-and-under, Division 1 and championship teams for season 2019. Open and 19-and-under trials are taking place on Sunday 21 October and Sunday 28 October at Casey Stadium from 4.30-7.30pm.
Cindy Bell, Corey Wagner, Debbie Schramm, Holly Booth, Robynn Pym, Jade Rawlings, Jay Lockhart, Rebekah Bogos, Sue Booth and Peter Maynard celebrate the successful Casey VNL licence bid. 185127 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS There is also a screening day for open and 19-and-under players on Wednesday 3 October from 6.30-9.00pm at Casey Stadium. The screening day is for players who have
not played VNL in 2018. Registrations for the screening day and trials are available via trybooking.com/ book/search. Search for 'Casey Demons.'
Cranbourne Bowls open for business By Russell Bennett Another year of bowls is about to begin at Cranbourne, but a lot of activity has already been happening around the club. Club member Frank Coulter has put together a comprehensive history of the Cranbourne Bowling Club, which was presented to the club on season opening day, 1 September, and attended by a large number of club members and special guest, City of Casey Deputy Mayor Amanda Stapledon. Using photo albums and old newspaper clippings, a total of over 1000 historical photos were captured on computer and presented and viewed by all who attended on the day. berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au
Frank Coulter went on to say: "It all started with the inaugural meeting held in the Cranbourne Public Hall on Friday, 7 December 1962 at 7pm with 20 interested residents attending in an endeavour to form a bowling club in Cranbourne. Mr Bill Forester took over the chair, becoming foundation president and the ground work started on setting up a bowls club. There is also a video clip of members having a roll up sometime in 1963 and a game being played around the time of official opening day that being held on Saturday, 7 March, 1964 at 2pm where the then current Shire President, Mr Norm Brunt opened the clubroom doors." History records some great team pennant
wins for the club over the years but a few individuals stand out with outstanding results including life member Elsie Anderson who has won the ladies club championship five times and current ladies champion Lynne Wood who has won this title four years running. Life member Stan Burnett also has a fantastic record with four club championships, while life member Hans Worstelling was an outstanding long-time club president and committee man of the club. The club has also opened its new synthetic green and two green dedications were made to Stan Burnett and Hans Worstelling for their many years of service and dedication to the club.
