MORE TO LOVE The editor’s desk I caught up with the Christensen family of Freestone for this week's cover story (see pages 4-5). They're just one of the many local farming families who are doing their best to stay positive during this horrendous drought. While their story is not unique, they are an example of the resilience of farming people all over this country - they still manage to smile and look ahead, despite being financially crippled by the feed bills for their dairy cows. They - and other dairy farmers around Queensland - may be forced to exit the dairy industry and pursue other options to turn a dollar, but they're not giving up the fight just yet. It may seem a trite statement, but this drought will end. I'm following a Facebook page at the moment called 'One Day Closer To Rain' and it's a good way of looking at it. We as a community must stand strong until that rain comes - even if you're not directly involved in farming, any agricultural downturn has a flow-on effect that eventually reaches everyone. My thanks to the Christensens for sharing their story of drought with readers this week - their good humour and unfailing optimism is an inspiration to all at this time. Jeremy Sollars

ALL GAVE SOME - SOME GAVE ALL Work has begun on a new war memorial dais and walls in Warwick's Leslie Park, after safety fencing went up last week near the Cenotaph. The project will result in a permanent platform - made of sandstone - for dignitaries during Anzac Day and Remembrance Day services, as well as commemorating every conflict in which Australians have been involved. The project has been driven by the Warwick Community Development Anzac Memorial Committee which raised around $93,000 - through a combination of gaming and government and council grants and donations from veterans' and other community groups and the general public. The dais will be officially opened at 10.45am on Saturday 3 November, in time for Remembrance Day on Sunday 11 November which will mark the 100th anniversary of the armistice when ended the First World War. While the memorial wall and features may not be completed by the time the dais is officially unveiled the new feature in Leslie Park will provide a focal point for this year's

Warwick Community Development Anzac Memorial Committee members (from left) Kev Neal, Jimmy O'Leary and Johno Felton at the site of the new dais in Leslie Park. Remembrance Day commemorations. Addresses will be given by Victoria Cross (VC) holder Dan Keighran, Major Grant Prendergast and Fr John (Jack) Hammer. In mid-November work will commence on a new 'memorial space' for the famous Warwick Dungaree marchers, just outside the Leslie Park Cenotaph gates.

A Southern Downs Regional Council spokeswoman said the dais project is being managed by the council on behalf of the Warwick Community Development Anzac Memorial Committee. She said construction of the Dungaree Memorial Space will be carried out by Taddio Building Group - which is also

constructing the dais - with completion of that project anticipated at the end of December. "The Queensland Government's Works for Queensland Grants Program has funded $135,000 towards the project, with council contributing approximately $30,000," the spokeswoman said. ●

TIGHTER WATER RESTRICTIONS TO COME As water supplies across the region continue to drop, the Southern Downs will move to high level water restrictions if we receive no significant rainfall in the coming weeks, the council has said. A statement released last week said based on the "extremely dry conditions brought about by drought, current dam levels, and seasonal rainfall projections for the region, the Southern Downs will move from medium to high level water restrictions in early November". Mayor Tracy Dobie said the community must play its part in helping reduce the region's water consumption. "The Southern Downs is drought declared and until we get decent rain to replenish the dams and our water supply, we all need to be working together to reduce our usage," Cr Dobie said. "The region is currently using over its consumption targets and so I'm asking everyone to be aware of what the tighter water restrictions mean and to assist in stretching our water reserves until we received much needed rain. "Be mindful of your water usage, adhere to the restrictions and use water efficiently and responsibly both at home and at work.

The council says the region will move to high level water restrictions in November if no "significant rain". "We are in a severe drought and our water supplies are low, so we need to work together to conserve the precious water we have. "It is going to be a warm, dry spring and the reality is we may not get decent rain until early next year." The Bureau of Meteorology is currently predicting a drier and warmer than average

spring which will likely intensify existing drought conditions. High level water restrictions outline a maximum consumption target of 170 litres per person per day, or around 18 buckets per person per day. The restrictions will mean outdoor water use - garden watering - will be restricted to: · One hour on allocated days (even number calendar days if you have an even number house and odd number calendar days if your house number is an odd number or if there is no number) · Watering restricted to between 5pm and 6pm from October to April (inclusive) and 5pm to 6pm May to September (inclusive). · Lawns may not be watered. · Use of sprinklers and fixed irrigation systems prohibited, one hand held hose is allowed to be used per premises or buckets may be filled directly from one tap. SDRC officers are patrolling the region in a bid to help educate the community on current water usage and to ensure residents are complying with restrictions. For information and tips on how to be water wise visit seqwater.com.au or qld.gov. au/environment/water/use/community. ●

BRIDGE GETS GRANT CASH The Southern Downs Regional Council has obtained grant funding for the upgrade of the ageing Palmer Bridge on Freestone Road. A statement released this week said the first step in upgrading the bridge is to conduct "preliminary investigations" of the site, including community consultation "with members of the community who have an interest in the project". The council will hold a Community Consultation session to be held from 11am to 1pm on Wednesday 3 October 2018. The event will be held at Clyde Simon Park on Freestone Road next to the bridge. Council consultants will be present for this two hour period. Freestone Road is an important connector route between Warwick and the wider region and the Cunningham Highway, with Palmer Bridge currently only a one-lane bridge. If you are unable to attend but would like to make your views known contact project manager Sean Rice on 0488 715 700 or email sean.rice@sdrc.qld.gov.au. ●

COVER STORY Phil and Karen Christensen keep smiling - but say their "positivity" is starting to run low.

POSITIVE BUT REALISTIC P BY JEREMY SOLLARS

hil Christensen is a realist. While he loves being a dairy farmer - it's the only life he's ever known - he also knows that if it doesn't rain this summer, enough to break the drought, his dairying days are very likely to be over. While calls continue for a 10 cent levy on every litre of milk sold across Australia while the drought persists, Phil and wife Karen and their family also continue to milk their 215-strong herd twice a day, while forking out big money for feed for their cows. With a monthly feed bill of $17,000, not to mention power and fuel costs and council rates, the situation Phil and other dairy farmers find themselves in becomes more dire by the day. A 10 cent levy would cover the Christensen's hay costs alone - which Phil says would be a significant help but without that kind of government

intervention, and if the dry persists past Christmas, their operation will finally become unsustainable. As Phil says, "that's just the reality". If you include Phil and Karen's grandkids who help feed the calves, no fewer than seven generations of Christensens have worked in dairying at Freestone north of Warwick. The first arrived in the district from their native Denmark, with the farm's name - chosen by Phil's grandmother 'Marella' meaning 'Viking woman'. At a time when the children of many dairy farmers are pursuing careers well away from dairying, Phil and Karen are fortunate enough to have two of their adult children - Jason, 30, and Nicole, 23, - who are "mad keen" about milking cows and are full-time on-farm. Indeed, Phil says if it weren't for the enthusiasm of his kids he'd probably "sell up, apart from the house, and go travelling". But in the worst drought in their own

farming memory, the present generations of Christensens are staying positive and are still making plans for the future. "We've put in for (Queensland Government) low-interest drought loans and the bank has been kind enough to let us go interest-only while the drought is on," Phil told the Free Times. "What we'd like to do is put in some more silos so we can buy grain in bulk at harvest time and store more. "We're also looking at putting in a back-up bore - the one we have is flowing well and isn't pumping any air yet but a back-up would be good to have. "We're staying positive but our positivity is running out. "I've been through droughts before like 1991 - but this is the worst we've been hit financially, with the cost of feed. "If we don't get rain over summer that'll be it for us - we'll have to sell the cows and they'll only go for meat, not as dairy. "We've already sold two Kubota

tractors and we're selling other vehicles and we've had to cut wages for Jason and Nicole and our part-timers. "But all that's really only going to get us through to Christmas. "We're dryland here, but even the fellas who irrigate are finding it tough. "A levy would definitely help us - (local federal MP and Agriculture Minister) David Littleproud has been very vocal and I congratulate him, but is anyone else listening?" Along with selling the herd, if the worst comes and the family has to abandon dairying, Phil's plan is to sell off some of his land and machinery and look at converting to a beef cattle operation, and Karen will likely look at going back to working off-farm in town - options neither would prefer but they're being realistic. Eldest son Jason - who has four young children with partner Kristina - and Nicole would also have to pursue other employment options.

A family affair at ‘Marella Farms’: Eldest son Jason (left) pictured with Phil and Karen. Of the couple’s other adult children, Nicole works on the farm with Jason, while Andrew is an IT engineer and Luke an accountant. And even without the cows, their ground, like everyone else's, will still take time to recover back to productive capacity when the drought breaks. Phil also predicts that if it doesn't break this summer - and the government doesn't step in with a levy - he could be among anywhere up to 100 dairy farmers in Queensland who will exit the industry. With dairy consumption increasing in the Sunshine State consumers will find themselves drinking a lot more milk from Victoria - not quite as fresh after it's been in a tanker on the highway for up to 30 hours. ●

TALK IT UP ... Despite the stress, the ever-affable Phil Christensen still manages to smile and knows he's lucky to have a supportive family, as well as a network of mates, like former Freestone local Simon Goddard, and his Vanderfield agent Ben Collins. He says the latter "doesn't just come to try and sell us a tractor, he drops in for a yarn and to see how we're going". Phil also jokingly points out that he "doesn't have a ticket" for anything outside

dairying and left school at 15 after some years spent "wagging so I could drive the tractor". But deep down he admits he's "fearful" about the future, and while a few beers with a mate will help to manage the stress, he concedes other forms of assistance are also useful. After initial reluctance, Phil reveals he's been going to sessions with a professional counsellor, particularly to help with stress-interrupted sleep. "We grew up in an era when you thought you had to be tough," Phil laughs. "It (counselling) does help with things like sleeping - learning how to relax and breathing exercises. "It helps keep you positive." His advice to other producers - dairy and otherwise - is to seek professional help if they're at a low point mentally, and to "keep talking". ●

ABOUT THE CHRISTENSENS’ DAIRY OPERATION ... · Current herd of 215, mainly Aussie Red

Eyes on the future - what does it hold? and Swiss Brown cows, both of which are smaller and sturdier than the traditional Friesians, and calve more easily · Stored hay on the farm is being mixed with "tops and tails" of sugarcane brought in from the coast; the family also buys hay from the Freestone area but supplies are gradually dwindling · Grain for the herd - such as wheat and barley - comes in from as far as Western Australia via the Port of Brisbane

· The herd produces around 4000 litres of milk daily - Parmalat pays just under 60 cents per litre, but to cover their costs the Christensens' need closer to 80 cents per litre. ●

WHAT YOU CAN DO ... Sign the online petition calling for a 10 cent levy on every litre of milk to go to producers - visit www.change.org and type 'Milk Levy' in the search field ... ●

My Health Record – a step forward in healthcare for over 50s

8 SOUTHERN FREE TIMES

Thursday, 20 September, 2018

Over 50’s fitness expert Bill Hardy believes My Health Record is the way of the future

as current medications and Advance Care Plans to provide appropriate treatment quickly. • You don’t need to remember the dates of tests, medicine names or dosages. • Because healthcare providers have better access to clinical information, they have a more detailed picture to make decisions, diagnose and provide treatment. • You can control what information goes into your My Health Record and restrict who is allowed to access it. • For those that require assistance accessing your My Health Record, you can nominate someone to act on your behalf or ask healthcare providers involved in your care to add information to your record. • My Health Record has multi-layered security processes and strong safeguards in place to protect your information. By the end of 2018, a My Health Record will be created for every Australian, unless they choose not to have one. If you don’t want a My Health Record, you can opt out by 15 November 2018. For more information visit myhealthrecord.gov.au or call 1800 723 471.

If you had to describe Bill Hardy’s passions, they would be fitness, health and travel. After completing a Diploma of Fitness five-years ago, the 70-year-old Queenslander now runs over 50s fitness classes. “I have always been interested in health, which is why I started training mature aged men and women in strength and conditioning. It’s so important that as people get older, they keep active and look after their health.” Bill’s passion for health extends to My Health Record, where he is one of six million Australians who keep a summary of their important health information securely online and can choose which medical professionals can see it. “I think My Health Record is a great step forward in healthcare,” Bill said. “I’m going to India on my next holiday so I will need cholera, diphtheria and typhoid injections. This information will go on My Health Record, so I know when my immunisations are due again as they can be very hard to remember. Bill is also having ongoing checks after he was diagnosed and treated for prostate cancer. “I know I can go to a doctor or hospital at any time, located anywhere, and they will know my health problems and what medications I am taking. This makes the whole process much easier and is particularly beneficial when you are travelling. I can even view My Health Record when I am overseas.” Some key things to remember about My Health Record: • Your important healthcare information is available in one place and accessible by your doctors, specialists or hospitals. • When moving interstate or travelling, your information can be viewed securely online. • In emergency situations, treating doctors can view information such

MORE GLENGALLAN HISTORY UNEARTHED Relics of an 1850s orchard are being uncovered as a long-awaited orchard re-creation project comes to fruition at Glengallan Homestead, north of Warwick. Vegetation clearing has already revealed steps from a stone terrace to the remains of the massive greenhouse seen in late 19th century photographs and where orange trumpet vine still heralds the arrival of spring. Glengallan Homestead Trust chair Donna Fraser said site manager Terry Weier and volunteers have started clearing the orchard site of rounded stones, believed to have been cobbling removed from the original avenue and used as fill in eroded gullies. An overgrown platform on the creek bank now identifies the site of a huge boiler that once supplied the homestead and adjacent buildings. Donna Fraser said the team hoped to locate a well, described by former Glengallan Station owner Roy Smith as south-east of the homestead building, suggesting it may have supplied water to the orchard and gardens. Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) funding for the project is being matched by private donations which will enable planting of early varieties of grapes, citrus and stonefruit as weather conditions improve in the wake of prolonged drought across the region. Donna said the orchard re-creation,

A community-based project many years in the making came to fruition with the launch of The Flora of the Granite Belt book at Ballandean last Sunday 16 September. Published by the Stanthorpe Rare Wildflower Consortium, the book is the first comprehensive guide to the unique plants of the Granite Belt region. The enormous range of habitats in the region due to its elevation, topographic variation and granite geology has resulted in a profusion of flowering plants with diverse forms and habits, colour and structure. Group secretary Liz Bourne said more than 900 species of flowering plants were covered in the book, complemented by stunning colour photographs of over 700 of them. "This project has really been a labour of love by members of our Consortium over many years and we are proud the book has finally been published," Liz said. "Our group was formed in 2004 and since then we have produced a range of publications to help promote enjoyment and understanding of our local flora. "However, this book is the icing on the cake for us, combining local knowledge from a range of botanical experts plus some stunning photos." Liz said the book contains a full index of common names and scientific names, as well as keys and indexes for the major plant groups which made it easy to navigate. "We hope it will be treasured as an indispensable resource by plant enthusiasts,

A STICKY SITUATION? One of the issues Southern Downs Regional Council may wish to contemplate regarding the Invasive Pest Management Scheme is the mandatory nature of its implementation. A recent court case in the United States, brought by a man suffering terminal nonHodgkins lymphoma, found the chemical giant Monsanto, the manufacturer of Roundup, legally responsible for his illness. To the tune of $289 million. The decision will probably be appealed but there are an estimated 4000 cases waiting in the wings in the US alone. If the case stands however, then it may not be long before similar cases are tested in an Australian court. As Roundup is one of the cheapest herbicides on the market it is likely that it has been widely used by ratepayers in an attempt to comply with the Council's pest management scheme. This is where it may get a little sticky for Council. The scheme is mandatory so people have to comply or suffer a financial loss. What if in the future, a ratepayer brought a case against Council claiming damages for negligent conduct causing injury because they were forced to comply with a scheme that required the use of a herbicide that they

may not have used in other circumstances? It may be that the punitive, mandatory nature of this scheme places the Council in legal jeopardy. Michael Gooding Cannon Creek

QUESTIONS NEED TO BE ASKED In response to 'Don't look sideways and be quiet' (SFT 13/9/18), I find this story very alarming. A lot of questions should be asked about this disturbing behaviour. Were the mayor and councillors aware of this type of conduct being exhibited from two of their most senior staff members of SDRC? Why are these staff recording community members activities who are just going about their daily business and then lodging the notes as incidences in the SDRC ECM? These community members allegedly were completely unaware they were being observed and noted at the time the information was collected so was this information actually collected legally? Are the alleged incidences as the staff called them proven, or are they just observations of these community members that may or may not be true? What purpose were the notes collected for? Will notes continue to be collected about members of the community without

their knowledge? At what cost to the ratepayers does this behaviour cost the community? This opens the door for us all to take notes about people on the basis of 'he did, she did or he said, she said'...and whether it is true or not...is another question. (Name withheld)

LAUGHABLE IF NOT SO SERIOUS I come under the cover of darkness, wearing my hat, trench coat and dark glasses to deliver this letter, in response to information on pages 6 and 7 in the Free Times 13th September. Our respected Editor is as honest as the day is long, but is this for real? It can't be true. I checked the calendar, no it's not April Fools' Day. We thought it was hilarious, and rolled around on the floor, exercising our bellies with peals of laughter. Maybe it was free entertainment to try to make us forget about the increasing charges of water, rates, waste disposal services to pay these ridiculously overpaid people who seem to have little to do, and have time to indulge in such childish behaviour. Maybe that explains why so many people walk around, eyes downcast, looking at rectangular objects in their hands. Looks could kill, words are weapons, don't go near anyone speaking to another, you can't be cer-

tain what they are saying. All the time, 24/7 closed circuit television is active, recording your every move. Big Brother is watching, be careful, be alert, you never know. Now I fear the dreaded knock on the door. Please don't send me to Botany Bay or Port Arthur. Maybe I will make a plea that I was simply exercising my demonstrative right for free speech, then I will only get life in Siberia. Long live the sushi. (Name withheld)

THE SPIN

A TRUE QUEEN OF THE TRACK her trainer, jockey, or fellow competitors. Just a true professional who knows she is a cut above the rest and then some when you look in her eyes. Perhaps this horse could teach a few superstars on two legs how to behave when you are at the pinnacle of your powers or are the queen of your sport - long gallop and reign the queen. - Casey ANOTHER TWO TO FALL The pointy end of the rugby league season is here and it starting to feel a lot like the 10 green bottles song as eight became six and then became four and the upsets and nail biters continue. The quality of foot ball we have seen in this NRL final unpins what a tough competition this is to win. The excitement level has been off the Richter scale and it would still be a brave person to tip who is going to ultimately lift the trophy in a couple of weeks. This week are treated to two more grandfinal worthy match ups when bitter rivals the Roosters and Bunnies go head to head and one the other one of newer rivalries but equally as bitter the Storm and Sharks. A large dose of Adam's Reynolds magic sank the Dragons chances and set up what is sure to be an epic clash on Saturday at Allianz. play despite ongoing shoulder problems. The Roosters favourites here. For what it's worth I'll be cheering on the Storm and the Roosters. Will we see a Cronk v Storm GF? BUSY WEEKEND FOR SHOOTERS AND CLUB Another busy weekend for the Inglewood SSAA as they hosted a SSAA Muzzle Loading Match last weekend. Tom Donald was successful in the 25 Metres revolver. He out-scored Glen Holmes and Terry Fairbanks. Glen Holmes found the Muzzle loading rifle freehand 50 metres more to his liking with a win over Terry Fairbanks with Valerie Fairbanks and Ray Dudgeon finished locked in a tie for third spot. There is a full weekend of competition coming up this weekend with events on both Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday the action kicks off at 10.00am with Lever Action Rifle Match followed by SSAA Action Pistol match at 1.00pm. On Sunday morning the opening event is SSAA Action Pistol Match at 10.00am. This will be followed at 1.00pm by Rimfire Rifle Visitors welcome are welcome to attend on either day to learn more about the sport and the club. playing fair they will allow Slater whose Dad is currently battling serious illness to bow out on grand final day and ideally with another GF under that dodgy wing. It would be a fitting end to a remarkable career. 2018 will surely be remembered as much for the many big name retirements as for the outstanding football we have seen. Bellamy looks likely to have a full complement of fit players to choose from for Friday night's game while several Sharks including Paul Gallen are racing the clock to recover from injury. Gallen's co-captain Wade Graham is one player who will be watching from the grandstand after suffering an ACL injury in the Sharks game last week. Melbourne is currently holding favouritism for this game. The Roosters have their own hurdles to overcome with Latrell Mitchell suspended. His duties to be taken over by Mitch Aubusson It has not been plain sailing for the Bunnies but there was good news for their fans early in the week when it was announced Greg Inglis will escape suspension for a crusher tackle last week. Sam Burgess is expected to play despite being finding himself at teh centre of a sexting controversy. H is brother George has recovered from a nasty head knock after a collision with twin brother Tom. Probably not the first time that pair have clashed heads. Hero of the Bunnies win over the Dragons, Adam Reynolds is expected to

I defy anyone not to have been moved to at least goosebumps, if not tears, as the mighty mare Winx chalked up a trio of George Main Stakes wins and took her unbeaten tally to 27 races and her Group One wins to a record 20. It is spine-tingling stuff watching this mare as she casually strolls up to the leaders and then puts paid to them in a couple of bounds. She is better than a V8 motor and who knows how many gears. Hugh Bowman nailed it on Saturday when he said in his post-race interview on his way back to the enclosure - "She's brought so much joy to not only those connected with her but far and wide across Australia and the world". We indeed have been privileged in recent years to see some amazing equine talent - all of them females. We will never forget the great Makybe Diva and her Melbourne Cup dominance and the courage of the sprinting sensation Black Caviar who stole our hearts, but this mare is certain to go down in the annals of Australian racing as an 'Equine Immortal'. She is a world superstar with none of the tantrums and bad behaviour we have recently seen from some of our human stars. She is just a lady going about her business. No prima donna, no women's rights issue here, no issues of being treated equally or otherwise. She simply breaks the heart and soul of any competitors, male or female, that cross her path. No histrionics at the stewards or from

LAST FOR FIRST It was a last for first for the winner of the Men's Single Stableford event, at the Stanthorpe Golf Club Charles Seeto. Seeto won the competition with a score of 39 points but it will be his last hurrah at the club as he is relocating due to a work transfer. It was a fitting result for his final competition in Stanthorpe. The club and members wish Charles and his family all the best in his new role. After a count back Mick O'Brien filled the runner's up position relegating Ian Pickering to the run downs after both players finished with 37 points. The close rivalry in the ladies competition between Lyn Ludlow and Nikki Waterworth continues. The pair finished locked on 35 points. This week it was Ludlow who nailed the prize after the count back - Nikki Waterworth settling for the runners up spot. Pin shots went to Eric McLellan at three, Ian Henderson at 12 and Greg Fraser at 17. Lyn Ludlow had best approach at 17. Pro-pins were claimed by Hayden Smith at 1/10, Barry Hughes at 5/14 and Matt Waterworth at 9/18. The birdies nest at 11 was popular and resulted in a three split. Scott Constable, Darryl Boekholt and Brendon Barker, each finished with a share. In the run down, Ian Pickering, Billy Webb, Matt Waterworth, Lorraine Evans and Madeline Jarman all left with a golf ball. The club thanks Ron and Annelle Batterham for sponsoring the competition and providing the trophies and post game refreshments. The club has scheduled another Single Stableford for this Saturday and tee off is from 11.00am. There is a time sheet on the board for this event which will be sponsored by club members Eric and Shaneen McLellan BETTER CONDITIONS; TOUGH COMPETITION The Golf Croquet group enjoyed conditions much more akin to spring when they took to the court last week. In the first game of the day, a triples match each hoop was so closely contested that the morning tea break was called four hoops earlier than normal. In the end it was the team of Justin Liddy, Liz Ellway and Bronnie Southgate who nosed in front and managed to score a 9-7 win over Elaine Brown, Shirley Page and Marian Castles. Welcome visitors to the club were Dianne and Brianna, sister and niece of club member Shirley Page. The pair joined Shirley and Bronnie Southgate in a game of doubles. The result went the way of Shirley and her sister Dianne 7-5. The visitors now considering beginning a Golf Croquet group when they return home to New Zealand. While Shirley's relatives were being introduced to the game Justin Liddy and Marian Castles scores a 7-5 win over Liz Ellway and Marian Castles. CUPS ACTION STARTS WITH ALLORA Racing swung into action on the Southern Downs last weekend. The Warwick Turf Club hosted the 2018 Railway Hotel Allora Cup meeting last weekend. The five event card heralds the start of the Cup's season on the Southern Downs with preparations in full swing for the upcoming Warwick, Stanthorpe and Clifton Cups. The Allora Cup meeting is a popular date on the Allman Park Racing calendar and patrons frocked up enjoying the local races. Toowoomba galloper, Unique Mustique took out the Allora Cup, the main event on the five race card. Trained by Mark Callaghan, the eight year old gelding who freetimes.com.au

Winners are grinners and the connections of Allora Cup winner Unique Mystique had plenty to grin about after the eight year old took out the Allora Cup at Allman park last Saturday. It was the second leg of a winning double for jockey Noriyuki Nishio.

Locally trained Angel's Love got local punters off to a promising start with a win in the first event on Allora Cup day. Connections of the galloper are pictured after the win. started at $5.50 gave jockey Noriyuki Nishio his second win for the day when he held on for a half length win over Champagne Rock ($2.70) and Dangerous Danica ($6). El Venetian started favourite at the short quote of $2.60 but finished a long way from the winner. Warwick trainer, Michael Hemmings opened the meeting with a win in the Purshouse Rural Warwick / Allora Class NB over 800m. Angel's Love enjoyed the 3kg claim for apprentice Minehiko Shimodaira. The mare started at the good odds of $8 held on for a narrow win over First Bid and Mighty Roller. Favourite Gold Monarch who finished fourth in the race suffered interference at the 600m mark and had to be steadied on a couple of occasions in running when Shadwell Flyer shifted ground. Melissa Cox copped an eight day suspension for careless riding at a subsequent inquiry. Rosexcel raced by Optima Thoroughbreds and trained in Toowoomba by Tony Webb provided Cup winning Jockey Minehiko Shimodaira with the first leg of a winning double when he saluted in the second event a 1350m Class B, sponsored by Invergarry Equine Centre / Allora True Value Hardware. Starting equal favourite ($3.20) with third place getter, locally trained Nareema, the winner put the writing on the wall with an eye catching trial recently. Punters who backed the Ben Robinson trained You'll Beatem ($11) in the third event the Blue Cow Hotel / Wattles RLFC had to survive a protest from the rider of the second horse Catena alleging interference at the 600m mark before they could collect. The six year old was having his first start in Queensland since transferring to Robinson's Beaudesert stable from Victoria. The meeting wrapped up with a win for the connections of the Sunshine Coast

visitor Dave's Valor in the Warwick Painting Services / White's Garage Class 3 over 1100 metres. Ridden by Hannah English the Darryl Hansen galloper drew barrier one and franked good recent country form and his liking for the Warwick track with a six and half length win. The successful meeting gave local racing enthusiasts a taste of what is on the racing calendar in the next few weeks. SPORTERS WIN FOR LEOTTA Sporters Golfers are also enjoying the better conditions. On Sunday it was Cody Leotta who left with bragging rights after his winning round relegated Tony Steele to the runners up position. Leotta also collected the Pro Pin. Paul Armstrong and Mark Lynam cleaned up elsewhere. Armstrong finished with the Best Gross score and along with mark Lynam who took the Pin Shot at the third figured in the run downs. Leaving with smiles on their faces were Shane McLaughlan and Paul Byrnes - the lucky Meat Tray winners. Tee off this Sunday is between 7.308.00am and visitors or prospective members are always welcome. HAVE A GO The 2018 cricket season is just around the corner and the Warwick Cricket Association Juniors are preparing to host a sign day at Slade Park on October 6. Young cricketers are invited to the Warwick Junior Cricket Association Cricket Muster Day Junior Blaster / Master Blaster / Junior Cricket Juniors are welcome to 'Come and Try' cricket, register for the upcoming season and meet new friends. You can come and go anytime from 9.00am to 11.00am on the day and there will be plenty of information available for parents. For further information regarding the

morning contact Troy March 0432 791 696 or troy_march@hotmail.com CAPTAIN KEEPERS After the turmoil that marked the end of the t summer of cricket for the Australians a new look side is preparing to take on Pakistan in the UAE. It will be a new look Aussie side, under a new Coach and it appears a new outlook on the game and how it is played. Ironically both sides will be under the guidance of their glove men. It is something that is not often seen in cricket at the International level. I cannot recall an international game where both sides have been captained by their respective keepers but I believe it has happened on five previous occasions Pakistan skipper Sarfraz Ahmed says he is 'happy' to see a fellow gloveman in the leadership role in the Aussie team and expects a tough series when the two teams face off. Pakistan, led by Sarfraz, will welcome the Australians to their adopted home in the United Arab Emirates for a two-Test series in October. Ironically Paine and Sarfraz debuted against each others countries only months apart - Sarfraz against Australia in Hobart in January 2010 and Paine against Pakistan at Lord's in July later that year The pair has only ever crossed paths on field in 2009 in a series between Pakistan A and Australia A which was played in Queensland but each has a healthy respect for the others ability. Almost 10 years on, they are set to S renew not only their rivalry with the gloves but as captains of their countries. EXCTING CHANGES FOR STANTHORPE CUP Excitement around the upcoming Stanthorpe Cup is building and the Stanthorpe Jockey Club has unveiled new sponsors for the Stanthorpe Cup which will be run on October 20. Bill and Melissa Kerr from K & A Building will sponsor the race for the first time this year after the pair has supported and sponsored other races for many years. The Kerr's are better known these days in Polocrosse circles however for many years Bill Kerr acted as race starter. He is unsure of then exact number of years but thinks it may have been around 20 years so his links to the turf club are very strong. President of the Stanthorpe Jockey Club Neil (Chips) Brunckhorst said he was thrilled to have the Kerr's on board as the major sponsor of Cup taking over from Central Motors and the Reeves family. The Turf Club President thanked the Reeves family for their support of the Stanthorpe Cup in recent years. Mr Brunckhorst said there has already been plenty of work done in preparation for the annual race day. In an exciting development, the meeting this year takes on greater significance on the Queensland racing calendar this year .Queensland Racing has announced the Stanthorpe Cup as one of 16 Cup races to be included in a Queensland Country Cups Challenge. The Country Cups Challenge is recognition of the contribution of country racing to the industry as a whole and Mr Brunckhorst said it was a coup to have the Stanthorpe Cup included on the list of qualifying races. The inclusion of the Stanthorpe Cup will see the winner, if eligible progress to the $70,000 Challenge final to be run at Doomben on December 1. It is sure to lure an even strong field to Stanthorpe for the 2018 Cup. Now can we please just order a drop or two of rain to top off the condition of the track before October 20.
