Homeless crisis A void of affordable rental properties has driven Greater Dandenong into the top tiers of homelessness rates in Victoria. The state seat of Dandenong - with 1158 people experiencing homelessness - ranks second behind the Melbourne electorate, according to analysis by Council for Homeless Persons (CHP). Adjoining seats of Keysborough, Mulgrave and Clarinda are among the ‘top’ 20. The CHP released a blueprint for action by the major parties ahead of November’s State Election. Chief executive Kate Colvin said “political leadership” was required to fix homelessness across the suburbs, which was clearly “not just a city problem”. “Skyrocketing rents and a lack of social housing is driving homelessness in every
electorate in Victoria. “With the right measures in place, we know we can prevent most homelessness, quickly rehouse people who do lose their homes, and keep people housed long-term.” Dandenong was an example where people on low-incomes were being priced out of the soaring rental market. An influx of people attracted by the mix of good jobs and public transport options had created a lot of pressure on rental properties, Ms Colvin said. Ms Colvin also called for more social housing in the area, especially given the dearth of affordable one- and two-bedroom dwellings. In the latest Rental Report, there were 71 lettings in Greater Dandenong that were affordable to people on NewStart benefits. None were one-bedroom residences, just 28 were two-bedroom properties. Ten years ago, the median rental rate was

$120 a week cheaper. There were more than five times the number of affordable rentals. A Tenants Victoria spokeswoman said that 16 per cent of households in the Dandenong electorate were paying unaffordable rents. That is, more than 30 per cent of their income went to their rent. “The figure is rising every year. “Those who are not able to afford to rent in the private market end up turning to public and community housing.” With more than 80,000 Victorians on a public housing waiting list, it was “no surprise” that vulnerable tenants wound up homeless, the spokeswoman said. The recent Residential Tenancies Amendment Bill was a positive “first step” towards more affordable rentals, she said. “Multiple changes need to be made on a state and federal level to combat this heartbreaking issue.”

John Farquharson, of the Salvation Army’s Project Hope, said: “There’s just enough housing. There are services like WAYSS and Launch Housing doing great work but there’s not many options. “One of the problems is that in Casey and Cardinia, homeless people need smaller dwellings but just larger houses are being built.” Mr Farquharson said it was the wrong approach to put homeless people in temporary housing and then try to solve underlying issues such as mental health, drug and alcohol issues. “It isn’t working. The easiest way is to get people in permanent housing first. “Stable accommodation is your first building block.” The State Government and the Opposition were contacted for comment on the CHP plan. Neither responded before deadline.

Long stretch of paralysis By Cam Lucadou-Wells The traffic paralysis on Heatherton Road, Endeavour Hills can often drive motorists to despair. In the case of Heather Pereira, the morning peak was so bad she pulled a U-turn and went home. On her commute to her work at Glen Waverley, Ms Pereira says the build-up of westbound cars waiting to turn onto Monash Freeway or Stud Road is often unbearable. "As soon as you come over the hill, you see it. Your choice is either the freeway or Stud Road which is not much of a choice." On a good day, her 15-kilometre trip takes 20 minutes. But several days a week, it takes 50 minutes - despite leaving at 9am to avoid the worst of the morning traffic. It can often take 15 minutes to turn right onto the freeway slip lanes and make it onto the freeway, she says. The PT options in Endeavour Hills are poor. A trip to work would take about 90 minutes. There's a feeling of being trapped in your own suburb. Ms Pereira would plan a trip to
Chadstone by leaving after the 10am morning peak and returning before the 3pm afternoon crawl. "It's a shame because it stops me going out when I want to." Alan Gordon hits a wall of traffic on his drive to work from Endeavour Hills to Sandown Park railway station, followed by a train to Docklands. "Most mornings on Heatherton Road, traffic is banked from Stud Road back halfway toward the Monash Freeway. "And that's at 6.40 am each morning." It's the same quandary driving back home in the evening. Some good news is the upcoming replacement of the bottleneck roundabout at Heatherton and Hallam North roads with traffic lights. Up until then, it had made Lisa Bonner's drive to drop off her daughter to after-school classes in Narre Warren "absolutely horrendous". A stretch of less than 500 metres east on Heatherton Road up to the roundabout would take up to 20 minutes alone, she said. The total drive would be about 40 minutes. As part of the project, a 1.5-kilometre section of Hallam North Road will be widened from two to four lanes. "It's only 20 years too late," Ms Pereira observed. "Heatherton Road is such a major road that passes through major suburbs ... It's bad planning - to build how many homes in Berwick, Officer and Pakenham but the roads haven't changed."
Mikaela Eldridge with her upcycled fashion designs.
Rags to runway, old into new By Cam Lucadou-Wells It's kind of a rags-to-riches transformation. Dandenong North fashion student Mikaela Eldridge has a way of turning an opp shop's damaged and old stock and recycled materials into high-end garments. She and 19 other Kangan Institute students created their 'upcycled' designs for a sustainable fashion parade, appropriately dubbed Rags to Runway - Great Southern Style. It's hard to imagine from the end results that the materials were just saved from going to landfill. Her 1970s-style business lounge attire featured flared pants, an open-back top and exaggerated sleeves with detailing.
They were deliberately "commercial" designs - "you would not know the difference between old and new," she said. "It was such fun. We all were bouncing ideas off each other." Ms Eldridge intends to further pursue this growing 'repurposed' fashion movement. It's a sign of a growing community commitment to sustainability. She'd also like to breathe more life into plus-size fashions. "It's mainly in black-and-white. There's not a lot of variety. "The plus-size market in Australia is growing, which mightn't be what people think as luxurious."

IN BRIEF Easing the station squeeze
V8 ute hoon now drives Ford Focus By Cam Lucadou-Wells In an apparent act of penance, a driver who raced his V8 ute at up to 147km/h on Princes Highway, Springvale has since swapped to a Ford Focus, a court has heard. James Rory O'Connell, 32, had been intercepted by police after appearing to race sideby-side with a Porsche on the public highway shortly after midnight on 24 February. Highway Patrol members drew up next to O'Connell's ute at 147 km/h. The Porsche allegedly accelerated away at up to 169 km/h, the police took chase and intercepted it. O'Connell later told police the Porsche had "provoked" him into the duel.
"He was trying to intimidate," he told Dandenong Magistrate's Court on 17 September. "He was speeding up and backing off, trying to get me to race with him." The Porsche lost control and nearly struck his car. O'Connell indicated and changed lanes to keep his distance. He accelerated to try to get away from the Porsche; it would have been wiser to have braked, he reflected to the court. O'Connell pleaded guilty to driving at dangerous speed as well as performing an illegal U-turn against a red light shortly before the speedy encounter. O'Connell's car was located at his home address by police and impounded for 30 days. He told Dandenong Magistrates' Court it cost
him $405 to free the car, which he later sold off. He also renounced ever visiting again "organised enthasiasts' car clubs" - like the one he had attended earlier in the night in question. Magistrate Simon Zebrowski noted that at that speed, any slight error could send O'Connell's car off the road and striking pedestrians or motorists. "That rate of speed is too fast. "I don't care how good a driver you think you are. "The best case scenario (in that situation) is you just kill yourself, and not someone else driving or walking along the road." O'Connell was convicted and fined $1000, disqualified for the mandatory-minimum 12 months and ordered to attend a safe-driving program.
Cage-free campaign changes the game By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Bangholme egg farmer concedes cage-eggs are becoming a hard sell, with a number of big food retailers going cage-free. Andrew Postregna, who owns Tamarix Egg Farm, however remains defiant about the benefits of keeping his 70,000 caged hens.Mr Postregna argues cage eggs are cheaper. At his farm, the stress-free hens are penned in a healthy and hygienic environment, he says. They're kept at up to nine birds per square metre. "I think there's a place for all systems. People need to have a choice. "Not all people can afford those expensive free-range eggs." On 19 September, RSPCA Australia announced a list of big supermarkets and food brands who have signed onto its Cage Free And Proud campaign. Big food chains such as McDonald's, Subway, Grill'd and Nandos are on board. Supermarkets Aldi, Woolworths and Coles have agreed to phase out eggs in coming years. RSPCA Australia humane food manager Hope Bertrand said the move was the "next frontier", pushed by a change in consumer behaviour. Cage-free eggs lead the market-share in supermarkets. Now, cafes, restaurants and food manufacturers such as Arnott's were following the same lead, she said. "There are still more than 10 million hens whose entire lives are spent in a barren wire cage, with space around the size of an iPad. "Australians expect animals to be given basic care: to be able to move, to stretch, to socialise, to behave naturally - essentially, to have a life worth living." Ms Bertram said the future of egg production was "definitely cage-free".
An extra 150 car spaces have been pledged at Dandenong railway station by the State Government. As a re-election commitment, the Government announced 11,000 extra car spaces at stations across Victoria over four years. It also includes 135 more spaces at Lynbrook station and extra parking in Cranbourne and Pakenham. Premier Daniel Andrews said the initiative was in response to commuter frustration. "We know how frustrating it is to get to the train station but not be able to find a car park." Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams said parking pressure would be reduced along the whole rail corridor. "This will mean fewer people driving into Dandenong just to find a park and less competition for local commuters." Liberal South-Eastern Metropolitan MP Inga Peulich said the Government's "poor planning and neglect" resulted in car parking ranks "busting at the seams". The Opposition has promised 1600 new parking spaces across Melbourne, at a cost of $42.6 million. Ms Peulich said the Coalition was expecting to announce new outer-suburban station car parks in coming weeks, on top of extending the Cranbourne line to Clyde. "Only the Liberal Nationals can deliver congestion-busting infrastructure without blowing the budget, while Daniel Andrews is talking about a few carparks at Dandenong and a $70 billion tunnel to Broadmeadows sometime after 2050."
Tools and coins stolen in burglary Greater Dandenong CIU detectives have released images similar to several distinctive items stolen in a burglary in Springvale. The break-in at the Webb Street property occurred between 5pm, Friday 12 September and 5pm, Saturday 13 September. The items include power tools, and specialedition coins and metal bars from Royal Perth Mint. Any information to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or www.crimestoppersvic.com.au. Quote incident number 180313886 Caged hens at the Tamarix Egg Farm in 2016. "The commitment from these major brands shows there is no excuse for the continued use of battery cages." But Mr Postregna says big companies were being influenced by "animal activists". "They tarnish their brand if they don't do as (the activists) say. "The animal activists have hijacked social media. You don't get the understanding of what the caged system is." The industry was forced to upgrade its equipment with law changes a decade ago, he says. His chickens are housed in a shed, under constant temperature, are checked up to three times a day, get fed and watered and their manure is removed by conveyor belt. Born into the egg industry, Mr Postregna says he'd long noticed that caged hens were healthier. "There's a pecking order in a cage. You get six to seven chickens together - they know each other and the stress in these birds is very minimal." Chickens in barns or free-range are exposed to more external problems, such as mites, lice,
Power tools similiar to these were taken during a burglary in Webb Street, Springvale. Andrew Postregna argues caged-egg systems have been given a bad rap. worms, viruses and bacteria as well as pecking their own faeces, he says. "There's a lot more problems with alternative systems than what people realise. "Personally, I'd prefer a caged egg." Facing a changed market, Mr Postregna is considering the addition of a free-range egg farm. At his Bangholme shed, 30 per cent of his chickens are cage-free. The caged industry, though still sizeable, is shrinking, he says. "You get disheartened telling people all the time. "People are very passionate about it - you try to explain it and they don't want to listen."

A “highly intoxicated” driver who reversed over a woman standing behind his van and then drove forwards back over her has been jailed - and will be likely deported. Mairown Sahhitanandan, 37, pleaded guilty in the Victorian Supreme Court to dangerous driving causing serious injury to the victim. On the evening of 25 October 2016, the pair had fiercely argued at a drinking party at Fotheringham Reserve in Dandenong West. The 35-year-old victim stood about a metre behind the accused’s Hiace van. Sahhitanandan reversed at fast speed, striking her at fast speed. A witness said the van “slammed into reverse and just bowled her down”. “Her whole body disappeared under the car and he drove forward again three to four metres.” Then Sahhitanandan reversed again and drove away from the scene. In sentencing on 20 September, Justice John Champion said he couldn’t be satisfied beyond reasonable doubt that the accused knew the woman was behind the van. The critically injured woman was placed in an induced coma at The Alfred hospital’s intensive care unit. She was on a life-support ventilator for several weeks. Justice Champion noted the “devastating” injuries included two collapsed lungs, 10 broken ribs and fractured vertebrae, shoulder blades and collar bone. Two years on, she could barely walk to the letter box, and was wracked by pain. Sahhitanandan was jailed for two years and four months, with a non-parole period of 18 months. It included his 166 days in pre-sentence custody.

It was time for a group of 20 Gleneagles Secondary College students to shine. They had just performed a rousing blast of Pasifika song and dance on stage, which included a magnificent haka dance. It electrified an audience of 500 peers and proud family members. This was no ordinary school concert but a culmination of a youth leadership program for students of Maori and Pacific Island background. The aim was to help them belong, enjoy and thrive at school. The 12-week program was run in partnership by the college and the Centre for Multicultural Youth, with the guidance of mentors Temese Leilua and Paora Te Paki. At the ceremony, the students took the microphones to tell of what they learnt. They sung together in soothing harmony, received their certificates and prayed. They had grown up in confidence, been instilled with tools for leadership. As adults, that’s when responsibility kicks in, Mr Leilua told them. “That’s when the rubber meets the road.” Mr Leilua told Star News that it was a thrill to see the students find out what they’re capable of. They had stepped out of their comfort zone. The program is dubbed Le Mana - which means ‘empower’. The students build up selfesteem, self-expression and peer relationships, as well as their connection to their family, heritage and school. Cultural understanding is key. “You don’t know where you’re headed in the future if you don’t know where in were in the past,” Mr Leilua says. Le Mana is believed to be the only one of its kind for Pasifika youths in the South-East, who

Dandenong CWA’s helpers need help
By Cam Lucadou-Wells
By Cam Lucadou-Wells Dandenong's once-thriving Country Women's Association branch - that has supported so many in need - is on its knees. The institution, that did a roaring trade at its tearooms opposite Dandenong Market some decades ago, is down to just six members. It's not too late for people to pitch in and revive the branch, says secretary Lorraine Trickey. Not to mention, to join a place of fun and enduring friendship. "The branch is close to closing unless new members can be found," Ms Trickey said. "The city of Dandenong will lose a part of a much-needed service that has provided so much for so long." Over its 86 years, the branch has helped an array of causes - charities, scholarships, local schools, Dandenong Hospital, Olivia NewtonJohn Cancer Centre and the creation of Drum Theatre. Its members produce loads of hand-knitted crafts, such as Trauma teddy bears and premature babies' beanies. They have held stalls and barbecues to raise funds to give back to the community. "Whatever we make financially at the CWA, everything is given back. That is the beauty of it. "Where there's a need for support, we'll be there. "And that is what Dandenong still needs." The CWA branch was once synonymous

As the area has welcomed a world of cultures, many now seem unaware of the branch's existence, Ms Trickey says. "We just love people when they come and join us. The friendships you establish here are just fantastic.
"People enjoy it - and that's what it's all about." The CWA is Australia's largest women's organisation, helping improve the lives of country women and children. The female-only group meets monthly. Details: Lorraine, 0428 426 850.
Labor and Liberal MPs have traded blows over each other’s illicit drugs policies after Greater Dandenong was seemingly overlooked in the latest round of Ice Action Grants. Liberal south east metro MP Inga Peulich said it was “disgusting” that the Government failed to fund new initiatives to tackle ice use and addiction in the region. “The Andrew Labor Government’s soft on drug policy and failure to acknowledge the scourge of Ice and recreational drug use in the City of Greater Dandenong is disgusting." Her “appalled” colleague and Keysborough candidate Darrel Taylor concurred. “Despite high levels of drug-related crime, the Labor Government refuses to intervene even in Daniel Andrews’ own electorate of Mulgrave, or in Keysborough, part of Attorney General (Martin Pakula's) seat.” In response, the Government stated that the City of Greater Dandenong did not apply for the Ice Action Grants round. The Government claims it has provided an extra $11.7 million for expanded alcohol and other drug services in the South East over the past four years. Mental Health Minister Martin Foley said a “record amount” had been invested in rehab services across the state to clean up the previous Liberal Government’s “mess”. “What is truly disgusting and unforgiveable is the former Liberal government only opening two residential rehabilitation beds in their last term and leaving the sector in complete disarray following their botched recommissioning process,” Mr Foley said. Mr Foley denied that the Government had plans to expand the injecting room to other locations.

LOOKING BACK 100 years ago 26 September 1918 The Influenza Epidemic Influenza in severe form is still very prevalent. A peculiar feature of the sickness is the suddenness with which it claims its victims. A person may appear to be in perfect health, and yet half an hour latter will suddenly faint away, later developing a high temperature, accompanied by violent headache. A medical officer of standing mentioned that the present influenza germ seems to affect the heart, which is the reason why many victims suddenly faint away.

Ms Sorensen's journey began in May and by the time she reaches Sydney in late October she will have covered about 5000 Kilometres. Where possible she is

5 years ago 23 September 2013 Traders fear Myer's loss Dandenong Plaza traders fear Myer's departure next month will destroy the struggling shopping centre. A Myer spokeswoman said the Dandenong store represented less than 1% of central group sales and most customers were instead shopping at the new Fountain Gate store ... ... .The Plaza shop was expected to close in late October and all staff would be deployed. JB HI FI, Trade Secret, and Aldi are to take Myers

"We anticipate that the introduction of the four powerhouse mini-majors will draw significantly more people and drive higher sales" Dandenong Plaza centre manager Mark Tannahill said. Construction works are to begin before the end of the year with the four new retailers to open late next year. Mr Tannahill said centre Management was "well aware of the importance of activation and marketing strategies."
Huge crowds welcomed shopping emporium Thousands flocked to McCrae Street to watch Dandenong mayor Keith Miller open Myer's doors on 4 November 1974. "And they even drank coffee as they waited for the store to open" The Journal reported. The 10 million complex was touted as "four levels packed with values and excitement and dominated the Dandenong skyline.
Memories of the doctors The late Jack Johnson was the author of When The Clock Strikes, a fascinating account of growing up in Dandenong, his years tending to the city's pipes and drains as a plumber and bringing up a family with wife Frances in their beloved home in Macpherson Street. The gate of the paddock-like driveway where we came in and out of O'Brien's was almost opposite Westwood which was Dr Boileau's house and medical practice. We went there as kids, which was not very often, unless mum thought we had some serious disease. Westwood was a large house on the southeast side of Walker Street between Rudduck Street and McCrae Street. The old O'Regan home was next door. Westwood had also been the house and practice of some of the very early doctors of Dandenong.
JACK LOOKS
BACK JACK JOHNSON In its later life it became the first major club rooms of the Dandenong RSL. As kids we were fascinated by the fancy red lights doctors had over their front gates. They reminded us of the oil lamps on the tabernacle or sanctuary at St Mary's church. Today this section of Walker Street is no longer a through road from McCrae to Clow Street. It has vanished beneath the Dandenong Plaza complex. Rudduck Street, where we once lived, is no
longer a street and has become part of the realignment of Stud Road into Foster Street. Dr Boileau's house was not the first doctor's house we went to with Mum. The first was a lovely old ivy-covered, handmade brick, Victorian one on the corner of Foster and Langhorne streets opposite the old St Mary's church. We saw Doctor Frost or Doctor Taylor. That house was later demolished and replaced by the first modern Langton Medical Clinic. The building is now a court house and Langton Medical Clinic has moved further down Langhorne Street, beside a chemist shop. The site of the new clinic once contained the Mitchell family home (our baker) and later the Whitney family home (butchers). Their spruce tree still stands in the council car park.

Lowest crime rate By Cam Lucadou-Wells Official crime rates in Greater Dandenong have dropped to the lowest levels in four years. According to Crime Statistics Agency figures, the area’s offence rate dropped 9 per cent during the 12 months up to June 2018. There were significant drops in assaults (by 9 per cent), sexual offences (10 per cent), burglaries (21 per cent), theft (11 per cent), deceptions (18 per cent) and weapons offences (18 per cent). Overall, the crimes against the person rate was down by 7 per cent - though robberies were up by 1 per cent. Recorded family violence incident rates were down 5 per cent . Police Minister Lisa Neville noted Victoria’s crime rate had declined for the fifth consecutive report. It showed that the trend was “not a blip” but “sustained change”. The state’s crime rate had reached its peak in 2016, Ms Neville said. Deputy Commissioner Shane Patton, of Victoria Police, noted there were 24,000 less victims
of crime across Victoria in the past year.. He said record numbers of arrests at nearly 175,000 for the year were achieving results. More visible police patrols, proactive policing and the targeting of high-harm, high-volume offenders would also help restore public confidence. “We’re removing them as a threat, remanding more people than ever before,” Dep Comm Patton said. He acknowledged there were still “feelings of a lack of safety in the community”. Police had targeted “networked” youth offenders - resulting in fewer young criminals. But there was still an active “cohort” of wayward youths, Dep Comm Patton said. In Greater Dandenong, the crime rate was at its lowest since June 2014. Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams said an “unprecedented” investment in Victoria and more frontline police hitting the streets was making the difference. “There’s still more work to do - we want to drive the crime rate down in Greater Dandenong as low as possible.”
Soberingly in raw figures, there were 18,382 offences committed between July 2017-June 2018. There were 1732 assaults - nearly five a day, 1443 burglaries - about four a day, and 5596 thefts - about 15 a day. More than 2400 family violence incidents were recorded in Greater Dandenong - about seven a day. South-Eastern Metropolitan Liberal MP Inga Peulich pointed to a surge in raw numbers of offences in Greater Dandenong since the Government took office. In the past year, there were a record 18,342 offences - up 2405 from December 2014. “Daniel Andrews has abandoned community safety and presided over a 15.05% increase in crime in the City of Greater Dandenong,” Ms Peulich said. “This isn’t just a crime wave, it is a crime tsunami. “Daniel Andrews promised to smash the violent youth gangs running rampant across our state, but these statistics prove he hasn’t even made a dent.”
More police on the beat for Dandenong By Cam Lucadou-Wells Twelve extra frontline police officers are about to start in the Dandenong region, with more to come. On top of the latest boost, another 34 Police Academy graduates are expected to arrive in coming months. "This is another major community safety boost for Dandenong," MP for Dandenong, Gabrielle Williams said. "Our community can expect to see more
dandenong.starcommunity.com.au
police on the street, more proactive patrols and even stronger enforcement over the next 12 months." The deployment of 50 new local police in 2017 had made an impact on the crime rate, she said. According to official crime statistics released on 20 September, the offence rate in Greater Dandenong had dipped by 9 per cent. It was the fifth consecutive quarterly decline. Ms Williams attributed the results to the Government's $2 billion investment in police resources as well as toughened powers and laws.
The former Liberal Government slashed the Victoria Police budget and failed to invest in "one single additional" officer, the State Government claims. South-Eastern Metropolitan Liberal MP Inga Peulich described the latest extra police as a "token gesture and election sweetener". "(It) will not change that fact that Dandenong is in a crime tsunami. "In the four years of the Andrews Labor Government violent crime is up but frontline police numbers are down."
Rider’s crash in pursuit By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Noble Park man has crashed an unregistered motorcycle after fleeing police at high speed through several red lights on a late Sunday morning, a court has heard. The unlicensed Matthew Lawrence-McGrath, 20, had taken flight after a police patrol car stopped behind him at a red right-turn arrow light on Waverley Road, Mt Waverley about 11.21am on 26 August. The accused fled through the red arrow, travelling up to 130 km/h in a 60 zone on Forster Road. Police activated lights and sirens to intercept Lawrence -McGrath, who accelerated through three further red lights. The pursuit was called off due to the danger posed by Lawrence-McGrath's riding in heavy traffic, Dandenong Magistrates' Court was told. Lawrence-McGrath crashed his bike at the corner of Ferntree Gully and Clayton roads, and ran from the scene. Police found him hiding in a nearby backyard. They seized knuckle-dusters from his jacket pocket. He was transported to Dandenong Hospital, complaining of neck pain. McGrath-Lawrence had once held a learners permit, but was unlicensed at the time. He was also two months into a supervised community corrections order. During a police search of his home, a stolen registration plate was found under his mattress as well as .22 cartridge ammunition and stolen identity cards. Police seized suspected stolen goods such as women's jewellery, hand tools and power tools. He pleaded guilty to five charges, including dangerous driving whilst under police pursuit. Magistrate Barry Schultz jailed the accused for two months, including 20 days in pre-sentence custody.

A cancer survivor has been overwhelmingly backed by friends and family during an inspirational 32-kilometre walk in the South East. Denise Lyons's attempt at completing her second Annie's Walk was cruelled by an excruciating foot-ligament injury, plantar fasciitis. Ironically, the Dandenong Hospital personal assistant's condition is a side-effect from cancer-preventing medication. Despite chronic pain, Ms Lyons still managed to walk 10 kilometres of the fundraising trek on 8 September. In support, she was joined by a flock of 35 walkers. "I had a bit of sadness I couldn't do the whole walk. "But it was nice to be a support person - to support those who were supporting me." Six completed the whole route - her son Sam, nieces Greta, Jenny and Louise, sister-inlaw Lucy and friend Candice. Many had never walked anywhere near the distance, and sported painful blisters by journey's end. "You can't underestimate what each of them had achieved." She marvelled at her walkers' enthusiasm including Jenny taking a pre-dawn train from Geelong to reach the start line, and others who trained for weeks. All of her children took part - perhaps a sign of the deep impact Ms Lyons's illness had on them. Each walker waited and then crossed the finish line as a pack at the gates of St Kevin's church.
Denise Lyons, right, and walkers head off from Nar Nar Goon. 184968 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS "Five of the six ended up with terrible blisters but at the end of the walk, there was so much joy. "Despite it being a difficult task, you know that you're making a difference for someone's cancer journey." Ms Lyons finished the inaugural walk in 2017, in memory of her late sister Annie who succumbed to cancer. The walk traced Annie's life - starting at the family home of her childhood Nar Nar Goon and ending at the place of her funeral St Kevin's Catholic Church, Hampton Park. Through the two walks, Ms Lyons has raised more than $8000 for Cancer Council Victoria. To donate, go to the Cancer Council page https://myownway.everydayhero.com/au/ annie-s-way-2018

Get on board, save a life By Cam Lucadou-Wells
Cr Roz Blades with radiologist Olivia Larsen at the breast-cancer screening van. 185152 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS
A 10-minute free check-up can save your life, as Greater Dandenong councillor Roz Blades can attest. Cr Blades helped launch the visit of BreastScreen Victoria's bright-pink mobile screening van in Dandenong. It will remain parked in Palm Plaza, providing free breast screens for women aged 50-74 until 27 September. The tests are recognised as the best way to detect breast cancer early - and to improve the chances of successful treatment. In Cr Blades's case, she had no obvious

symptoms when she was diagnosed at 53. A regular breast-screen detected a "lump" - which was a cancer - thankfully at an early stage. "It wouldn't have been picked up except by a mammogram," Cr Blades says. There's no downside for taking the quick test, she argues. "If there's nothing wrong, you don't have to worry about (another screen) for two more years. "If they find something, it can be fixed. And the earlier, the better. "I'm hoping my story will encourage women from Greater Dandenong to get a breast screen because it could save your life." The van is part of a concerted effort to boost screening rates across Greater Dandenong's culturally diverse communities. The van has been heavily promoted at community health services, neighbourhood houses and community groups. Visitors don't require doctor's referrals or Medicare cards. To book at the breast-screen van, contact breastscreen.org.au or 13 20 50.

Award spat Not everyone was happy about Clarinda MP Hong Lim receiving parting recognition at the Victorian Multicultural Commission's Awards on 12 September. In State Parliament on 20 September, opposition multicultural affairs spokeswoman Inga Peulich called for the withdrawal of Mr Lim's Acknowledgment of Service award due to him being a "factional ally" and "former employer" of Multicultural Affairs Minister Robin Scott. She tweeted: "Give the award back, Hong Lim!" A Government spokesman later came to the defence of Mr Lim, who retires after 22 years in Parliament this year. The spokesman said: "Hong Lim has worked tirelessly for decades promoting and strengthening multiculturalism - contributing more to Victoria than Inga Peulich will in her entire life."

A magistrate was gob-smacked by a gaping loophole as he sentenced a serial drug-driver. Due to state laws, the judge was unable to do any more than fine the recidivist for his third offence in the past year. He could not even force the accused on an unpaid work order the accused didn't give consent, claiming he had no issues with drugs. The judge mused that a truck driver could be caught a dozen times with drugs in their system - "and the best we can do is a fine". The driver was convicted and fined $1500. dandenong.starcommunity.com.au

Three-course challenge There was plenty cooking between business leaders and jobseekers in the Chisholm Institute restaurant recently. Taking part in the Kitchen Challenge, the participants served up restaurant-quality meals for 50 guests on 14 September. It was the last step in a leadership development program that's based around a commercial kitchen cooking challenge. Half of the participants were business leaders, the other half were young culturally-andlinguistically-diverse (CALD) jobseekers. They learnt teamwork, leadership and empathy skills, as well as mental resilience.

Hustwaite’s Dandy dream By Hayley Wildes
The Dandenong Stingrays have won their first ever TAC Cup premiership.

Dandy celebrates by Rays-ing the Cup By Hayley Wildes The Dandenong Stingrays are the 2018 TAC Cup Premiers. After 27 years and five grand final losses, the Stingrays finally claimed their maiden TAC Cup Premiership at IKON Park on Saturday afternoon. With the rampant Oakleigh Chargers standing between them and the trophy, the Rays rose to the occasion when it mattered most. Riley Bowman booted the first goal of the game after a tremendous second effort tackle for which he was rewarded with a shot on goal. Despite the best efforts of Lachlan Young and Daniel Frampton in defence, Oakleigh held a seven-point lead at the first break. The second quarter was when the Rays made their premiership move. Of course, it was co-captain Campbell Hustwaite who led from the front.
He was on the bottom of packs, running out of packs and tackling as if his life depended on it. Bailey Williams put through his first major of the day at the four-minute mark, then the speedy Jai Taylor inspired his teammates with a chase down tackle in the middle of the ground, leading to a Toby Bedford goal. Just two minutes later, Hustwaite ran through the middle of the ground, drove the ball deep forward and Ed Cahill snuck through another Dandenong major. It was a four-minute stretch of football that gave Dandenong the confidence it could execute its game plan against the loaded Chargers. The Rays held a 14-point lead at half time, 38-24. Oakleigh kicked a goal just one minute into the third term, but the Rays responded. Finlay Bayne got on the scoreboard, and
then 40 seconds later Lachlan McDonnell slotted a beautiful running goal to have Dandenong 21 points in front. The third quarter turned into a complete arm-wrestle and with 25 minutes of football left in the season, the Rays had a 23-point lead. With 12 minutes to play, Dandenong held a 29-point lead, but the Chargers weren’t done and after a Jack Ross goal with five minutes left to play, Oakleigh was just 12 points adrift. Oakleigh’s Dylan Williams snapped a goal with two-and-a-half minutes remaining and it was just a goal the difference. The final couple of minutes were frantic, but Dandenong’s defence stood tall and simply wouldn’t allow the Chargers to get the goal they so desperately craved. The Rays held on for a thrilling six-point win, claiming their maiden premiership in the club’s sixth grand final appearance, 12.8 (80) to 11.8 (74).
“It’s one of the things that I’ve had pencilled into my mind since the start of the season. Having the co-captain tag with Mitch Riordan, we just want to make history and it would be pretty special to captain the Stingrays to their first premiership.” Back in early July, that was Dandenong Stingrays co-captain Campbell Hustwaite’s response to what it would mean to co-captain the Rays to a maiden TAC Cup premiership. Fast forward almost three months, and that goal is now a reality. “It’s ridiculous. It was a bit of a dream, but now that it has happened, it’s amazing and the feeling for the next few days just won’t go away - I won’t be able to wipe the smile off my face,” Hustwaite said after leading his team to the 2018 TAC Cup Premiership on Saturday afternoon. It’s been a season that saw Hustwaite finish equal third in the Morrish Medal (the TAC Cup best and fairest) after a stunningly consistent season, yet in a blow that many at the Stingrays couldn’t believe, he was overlooked when combine invites were announced in July. He didn’t dwell on that disappointment. Instead it just drove him to work even harder. Now he is a premiership co-captain after playing a starring role in the biggest game of the Rays’ proud history. Coach Craig Black spoke about Hustwaite after Saturday’s grand final win. “After the setback he got in not getting a combine invite, his character around the club has been incredible - and we knew that internally - but he’s gone and played some super footy,” he said. “Hopefully clubs can see the character of the young man; he’s just a heart and soul player and we couldn’t have asked for better leaders at our club.” Hustwaite admitted those final frantic minutes went on forever. “I was trying to get the clock to speed up, it was playing tricks on my mind,” he said. “I’m just stoked. We were able to fight and scrap and do all the little things - I think it was the mateship that got us over the line; all 23 of us putting in work, instead of just one or two.” He finishes his time at the Rays having left quite a legacy.
Black’s Stingrays swansong ends in glory By Hayley Wildes Heading into the big dance with a 0-5 record in grand finals, this Dandenong side was determined to write its own history. It was reward for a truly incredible season from the Stingrays. Just one loss all season was credit to the teamwork and desire to work for one another. Whenever they were challenged throughout the season - including, most importantly, in the grand final - they responded. The likes of co-captain Campbell Hustwaite, Ed Cahill, Riley Bowman, Bailey Wiliams and Zac Foot were sublime on the biggest day of the year. The defence was steadfast against an Oakleigh forward pack that boasted speed and class. Lachlan Young simply wouldn’t be beaten, while Daniel Frampton, Lachlan Stenning and Will Hamill were absolutely crucial down the stretch. But in fairness, it was a total team effort; all 26 STAR JOURNAL

23 players played their role and now they are all premiership players. For coach Craig Black - himself a former Stingrays player - in his final game with Dandenong, it was a fitting way to finish his time at the club. He has driven standards and developed some of the finest players in the land over his time with Dandenong and he heads to Collingwood in a development role as a TAC Cup Premiership coach. After the game, Black spoke about his nerves in those thrilling final minutes. “I was getting really nervous late, as you could imagine - I was counting down every second, but credit to the boys to be able to dig deep in a couple of really important moments,” he said. “I thought we set the game up in that second quarter and luckily we were able to hold on. “Will Hamill and a couple of the defenders just halved key contests and allowed a couple

of stoppages late - I was about to run over and push the siren!” From Black’s perspective, Dandenong’s maiden TAC Cup premiership is reward for everyone involved. “It’s a great reward for not just this year, but the people who put in a lot of hard work over 27 years - for our club to finally have success is outstanding and unbelievable,” he said. The play of Riley Bowman and Bailey Williams - two key pillars who will be highly sought after in next month’s AFL Draft - was crucial. “You just ask your big men to compete and I thought they both did that,” Black said. “Riley in the ruck competed really well, which allowed us to use Bailey forward a bit more and a couple of time he just willed himself on the contest and he took a couple of important marks, which was fantastic.”

A Dee-lightful premiership By Hayley Wildes
The premiership-winning Springvale Districts SFL Division 3 team. "In Round 8 I broke my leg on the Saturday when I was a playing assistant and on the Tuesday the coach resigned," Thompson said. "So three days after breaking my leg, I was announced as senior coach. I had surgery on the Friday and then on the Saturday I coached my first game and we won. "I had to move on really quickly - it was a real challenge taking the team over mid-week, but it was good and we ended up winning six games." Despite winning six games for the season, due to the re-structure within the league, the Dees were relegated. Whilst the club fought against being relegated, their enthusiasm wasn't dented in the slightest. With a committed club and playing group, 2018 was never going to be a wasted season for Springvale Districts. "We re-signed every senior player from last year and then we brought in roughly nine top-end quality players - we targeted certain people and we really strengthened our list," Thompson said. "Going down a division with the same team

we had before and adding in nine quality players, we knew we were going to be a good side." Having taken all before them in Division 3, the Springvale Districts will return to Division 2 in 2018 with their sights set on taking it right up to those in the higher division. "We re-signed 26 senior players before the grand final and I re-signed in grand final week, so next year we're going in with the same list back into division 2," Thompson said. "I've been around the club for a long time and I've never seen a group this close. They're all still young - most are between 25 to 28 years old - so they're at the right stage in their careers to go back into Division 2 and a lot of these guys have played Division 2 before, so they know the standard. "With keeping the same side it's another year under the belt of learning the game plan and all our structures and I think we've just about mastered that now, so we're ready to go back into division 2 and give it a crack." With a Division 3 premiership cup in their trophy cabinet, Springvale Districts won't be content on just making up the numbers in 2019.

Springvale Districts had a point to prove. Having been relegated to Division 3 of the Southern Football League this season, the Dees were on a mission to prove their worth and put their best foot forward to claim the flag. "We would've loved to stay up; we tried everything as a club to stay in Division 2, but we had sort of lick our wounds and go back," Springvale Districts coach Kris Thompson said. "We were always really confident and even from the start of preseason we set our goal to win two premierships (senior and reserve grade) and I was happy for us to talk about that throughout the year; that it's okay for that to be our goal. "But if you're going to do that and talk about it, you've got to do everything to back it up with no excuses throughout the year and no cheating each other. I can honestly say we did that." After claiming the minor premiership with an impressive 16-2 record, the Dees entered the finals as favourites and sent a message in their semi final against the second-placed Hampton Park Redbacks. Having beaten the Redbacks by 19 points, they were through to the big dance and after Endeavour Hills bounced Hampton Park out of finals in straight sets, the Dees would meet the Falcons in the decider. Holding onto a seven-point lead at half time, the Dees powered home in a rampant second half that was fitting of their dominant season. A six-goal to one second half saw the Dees claim premiership glory. "We probably should've had them at half time, but our inaccurate kicking in front of goal cost us," Thompson said. "I just knew at some stage we were going to break them, but to their credit, Endeavour Hills didn't go away and they're a really good side." Led by captain Todd Wills - who was awarded the best on ground medal - the Dees had players all over the ground stand up in the biggest game of the year. The likes of Thomas Wilkinson, Matthew Thompson, Ben Stacey and Nathan Brown all fought tooth and nail to help their side take home the cup. For the club and coach it was a season of reward after a tough 2017. Thompson took over head coaching duties in the most trying of circumstances, but all along it was about the club - not himself. "I played about 10 years of senior football at Springvale Districts, then I went to Frankston where I was an assistant with the VFL for a couple of years and then I came back as a playing assistant," he said. Having returned as a playing assistant, Thompson was quickly thrust into the deep end when the head coach quit mid-way through the 2017 season. To make matters even more complicated, Thompson took over the coaching reins having just broken his leg.
