Shock footy move a sadness to be leaving behind a "wonderful playing group". "I'm incredibly grateful for the opportunity I got at the club to start my coaching career and develop myself- I have enormous admiration for the players and how they've sustained a successful period for the club," he said. "I'm internally grateful for the committee to make this club better each year and create a culture and place that's the envy of other clubs. "I'm also grateful to the family to allow me to put the time in to coach." Kemperman also said he is exploring his options at local and elite level and that his two premierships has only fuelled him to continue working on his coaching.

coach a third year and understood the club's stance, and swiftly denied that there were any issues with Kemperman and the playing group, reiterating that it's all part of the transition back to Nisbet. "We asked for the players' input, and they were happy with whatever way we went - it wasn't about them voting him in or out, so there was no issues at all," he said. Kemperman ends his time at Berwick with a magnificent 92-percent strike rate, having coached the club to 34 wins from 37 outings, including an unblemished record of five wins in finals. He told the News that it was a mutual parting of ways, and he understood that it was always going to be transition when he signed up for the role two years ago. But he said there was

One of the key architects of Berwick's back-toback SEFNL premierships, dual premiership coach Stewart Kemperman, has parted ways with the club after just two years in the job. The former Noble Park champion signed on with the club in his first senior coaching role in 2017, and guided the Wickers to back-to-back flags for just the second time in the club's illustrious history just days ago at Edwin Flack Reserve against Narre Warren. Club president Glenn Gambetta confirmed the massive news on Tuesday afternoon to the News after a series of meetings, and said that they have parted ways amicably after discussions with Kemperman about the future direction of the club.

Gambetta also confirmed that Rhys Nisbet, the 2015 premiership coach, will coach the club from 2019 as it enters 'AFL Outer East', describing it as a "transition". "Obviously it's a very difficult decision to end Stewart's time at the club, but the original plan was to offer him a two-year contract with the option of a third year," Gambetta said. "The transition from Rhys to Stewart was a smooth one, but we were always aware that Rhys was keen to return to the fold after a twoor-three year hiatus. "Rhys is now fully committed to returning to the fold, he's a Berwick boy through and through, and we're delighted to have him back on board." Gambetta said Kemperman wanted to

Principal Rob Duncan from Narre Warren South P-12 College has been nominated as a finalist in the Outstanding Secondary Principal category in the 2018 Victorian Education Excellence Awards.

Rob’s a stand-out By Jessica Anstice Narre Warren South P-12 College Rob Duncan has been nominated in the Outstanding Secondary Principal category and the school has also been nominated in the Oustanding School Advancement Principal Class Team for the 2018 Victorian Education Excellence Awards. Mr Duncan believes there is no greater purpose for a public school than its contribution to the lives and outcomes of its local community. As principal of Narre Warren South P-12 College, Mr Duncan has led the transition of his school since 2015 to become a leading and thriving centre of education excellence. "I am proud of the achievement of our college and pleased that the work that many people have put in over the past few years has been acknowledged in this way," Mr Duncan said. "I work with some exceptional educators in a great school where students come first. "It is a great acknowledgement for the college leadership team, teaching and support staff, parents but most importantly students, who are re-

ally proud to be students at Narre Warren South P-12 College." Under Robert's leadership, the school has made significant progress in programs that will have lifelong outcomes for its growing population of students. Empowering students through viable student pathways matched to their aspirations has seen the school's highly successful VCAL, VET and VCE programs delivering great destinations for Narre Warren South students moving from school into work, training and higher education pathways. Major growth in literacy and numeracy has also been achieved through data-driven teaching strategies to support students with additional needs and those from migrant backgrounds. In addition, Mr Duncan has forged schoolcommunity partnerships and led key funding initiatives that will extend the reach and value of the school, including a soon-to-be constructed joint-use state of the art soccer pitch and a performing arts centre. His vision for sustainable school improve-

ment embodies everything that impacts student learning and outcomes. From resource management, facility upgrades and leadership development to parent engagement and community partnerships - Mr Duncan says he is proud to work with a team of exceptional educators delivering the very best for his whole school community. "Our school's results have been exceptional with great VCE and VCAL results and a huge improvement in NAPLAN data," he said. "In addition we have outstanding student survey results which indicate a high level of connectedness to school. "We are one of the very few 'Influence' schools in the state and we have over 320 students enrolled for Year 7 next year. In fact we have become so popular that we have had to enforce our designated neighbourhood boundary." All finalists will attend an award presentation ceremony on Friday 26 October at the Plaza Ballroom in Melbourne where the winner will be announced.

Opposition kicks in for Berwick soccer An elected Liberal Nationals Government will contribute $600,000 towards a new synthetic soccer pitch for the Berwick Churches Soccer Club (BCSC). The BCSC is a Christian based soccer club, administered by volunteers. It fields teams in Kick Start, all junior age groups and both men's and women's seniors in the Victorian Churches Football Association. "Sport and recreation play a vital role in the Berwick community," Liberal candidate for

Narre Warren South Susan Serey said. "As the local candidate, I am very pleased to make this election commitment to help local clubs develop better recreation facilities and provide more opportunities for local residents to play and enjoy sport. "This upgrade will ensure that the Berwick sports precinct can be enjoyed by the local community for many years to come." The philosophy of the club is not to turn members away and in particular, it wishes to

reach out to the South Sudanese youth and local community who love soccer. A synthetic soccer pitch would enable the club to cater for more players, games and teams. "The Liberal Nationals have long supported the fantastic sporting achievements by Berwick Churches Soccer Club and are committed to working with local councils, clubs and communities to develop good quality, local facilities that bring more people together through sport," shadow minister for sport Danny O'Brien said.

Trio arrested

Rising rugby stars Kilberry Valley Primary School boys' rugby team made it into the state finals and the girls rugby team received a 'wild card' and are also playing in the state finals. On Tuesday 18 September the Pakenham Eels Rugby League team hosted the Billy Slater Qualifier in Pakenham District, and many City of Casey and Cardinia schools participated in the event. "Our students were amazing on the field and off the field showing great sportsmanship and teamwork," physical education teacher Lachlan Clydesdale said. "Well done everyone involved especially parents and school community who supported both teams."

Three men have been arrested after being spotted in an outstanding stolen car in Malvern East on Thursday, September 20. Police were called to a service station on Warrigal Road following reports of the men acting suspiciously in a Mitsubishi Pajero just after 11pm. A number of police units attended and the trio were arrested as they attempted to flee on foot. A 25-year-old Endeavour Hills man, a 28-year-old Noble Park man, and a 31-year-old Berwick man, all remain in custody and are assisting police with their enquiries.

Trolley push for the kids

Kilberry Valley Primary School girls rugby team.

This week, Coles team members will push a trolley across Victoria to raise enough money to fund a team of Doctors at Victoria's only children's hospice run by Very Special Kids. For the second consecutive year, team members from Coles Services will take turns to push a giant modified trolley into towns across the state to raise funds for the important cause. To coincide with the trolley push over the next two weeks, Coles will also sell $2 donation cards at 69 supermarkets in Victoria to support Very Special Kids including at Coles in Casey Central, Endeavor Hills, Fountain Gate and Berwick Central. Casey will be four of 44 locations across the state to host the trolley as it makes its way to more than 35 towns and suburbs across Victoria. Very Special Kids runs a children's hospice and specialised family support services from diagnosis to bereavement, supporting over 900 families who have a child with a lifethreatening condition in Victoria.

Let there be light

Need for more

We are disturbed to read that the Pakenham public celebration of the Diwali Festival of Lights is under threat because of bureaucratic red tape. We attended the inaugural festival last year in P.B. Ronald Reserve. It was a great occasion, an opportunity to meet the shire’s Indian community and see something of its culture on display, a variety of high quality food and a stream of enthusiastic dancers. The event was also attended by Cr Brett Owen, at that time the mayor, and Cr Michael Schilling. Cr Owen, resplendent in traditional white Indian clothing rather than his mayoral gowns, showed every sign of enjoying himself as he circulated in the crowd and danced to the music. According to Star News of 20 September, the festival is organised entirely by volunteers from the Indian community, through the Indian Association Casey Cardinia (IACC), and they have already spent $10,000 to meet council criteria for venue hire. Now they have been asked to produce a “comprehensive traffic management report”, at their own expense, before council will approve the venue. This is threatening IACC’s ability to hold Diwali. Last year’s event attracted almost 1000 people. Was this even allowed to proceed without a “comprehensive traffic management report”? If so, how is the situation different this year? We wonder if similar restrictions are imposed on other voluntary events in Pakenham, such as Yakkerboo, which surely faces a greater “traffic management” issue in closing off several streets for the annual Yakkerboo parade. Also, the council donates $15,000 to the Pakenham Racing Club each year for its Kids Night Out event. In our understanding, the Racing Club is not a not-for-profit community group. Every community on this planet, both large and small, relies on regular events to celebrate community spirit and bring people out of their homes to gather together. In mainstream Australian culture, events such as Christmas and the AFL Grand Final serve such a purpose. People from other cultures, migrating to Australia, bring us their joyful celebrations as well as their tax dollars. Surely few find it strange that the German Oktoberfest and the Greek Glendi Festival, to name only two, are now a familiar part of Australian culture, and can reasonably be called mainstream. By accepting these festivals and celebrations, we are welcoming those members of our community, and celebrating the acceptance of diversity in Australian culture which most people readily acknowledge to be one of its most vital features. Is our council showing a welcoming attitude to the Indian community by imposing restrictions such as Diwali faces? Or is the council prepared to support the community spirit by getting behind Diwali, rather than extinguishing the Festival of Light with a blanket of paperwork? Span Hanna and Cheryl Gosling, Pakenham.

I have been informed our local council does in fact advocate and lobby the State Government for Housing Commission and other types of shelter. I am informed that there’s a waiting list over 400, for local Commission Housing: and back in 2016 it appeared there were over 1000

Thursday, 27 September, 2018

people in the City of Casey only, who have no homes, as such, but are couch surfing, sleeping in makeshift accommodation, and sleeping rough also. This does seem like 1000 too many: and housing for people who have money is evidently not a solution for this. Karen Young, Casey.

Retracing a life’s journey By Cam Lucadou-Wells Denise Lyons' grand plans to reprise her inspirational 32-kilometre charity walk in memory of her late sister Anne has taken an unplanned detour. But she and the walk, which supports research into the 'forgotten cancers', are still steaming ahead on 8 September. Ms Lyons, a personal assistant at Dandenong Hospital, had become an avid walker despite the "daily reminders" of her own cancer survival. However at the start of the year, her daily walks were cruelled by a painful foot-ligament injury, plantar fasciitis. "I'm absolutely hating it," she says. "The doctors say the only treatment is rest. It's a slow process." Last year, she raised $4200 when she trekked from her childhood home in Nar Nar Goon to Hampton Park. She travelled via Pakenham, Officer, Beaconsfield and Berwick to St Kevin's Catholic Church, Hampton Park - where her sister Anne's funeral service was held 16 years ago to the day. The walk, in a way, covers the geographical arc of Anne's life. Next month, Ms Lyons is aiming to cover about half the trip - as well as giving strong support to her son Sam and other family and friends over the remaining 16 kilometres. In the leadup, it's been a chance to delve through old photos and remember her effervescent, life-loving sister. Anne was just 30 when first diagnosed with pancreatic cancer - the same illness that claimed her father. She still loved life even while living with the illness for seven years, Ms Lyons said. "She could tell a story with her hands. "She was full of life, energy and fun."

Daily, she endures lymphoedema and the occasional stinging pain. She has to avoid cuts, and take daily medication.

But she considers herself one of the lucky ones. And along the way, she fell in love with walking. "When you walk you solve all the problems of the world.

"It's a quiet time to think through all the things in your life. "You see so much when you walk." To donate, go to the Cancer Council page https://myownway.everydayhero.com/au/ annie-s-way-2018

Sir Zelman Cowen Centre at Victoria University ASPIRE program and a recent grant to hand the project over to the Muslim Community.

Sir Zelman Cowen Centre awarded innovation grant Victoria University is proud to announce that the Sir Zelman Cowen Centre has been awarded a $280,000 grant from the Lord Mayor's Charitable Foundation, one of Australia's leading philanthropic organisations proactively supporting Melbourne and its community. The grant was awarded for the project Aspire: Young Muslim Women's Governance and Leadership Training Program. Supported by the Islamic Council of Victoria, the Aspire program has run for two years, engaging 32 high achieving Muslim women who work within the Muslim community to improve organisational governance while simultaneously developing individual leadership skills. Aspire is about opening professional doors to young Muslim women who may not otherwise have the networks and career enhancement opportunities. The Lord Mayor's Charitable Foundation Scaling-Up Innovation Grant will devolve responsibility of this highly successful program back to the Muslim community itself. World Game Funds boost Member for Narre Warren North Luke Donnellan MP was thrilled to join with President Rocco Rullo and Treasurer Niki Rovinson from the Endeavour United Soccer Club to announce funding of over $102,000 in World Game Funds. The funding is to enable the provision of new and upgraded floodlighting at their Reema Reserve home grounds in Endeavour Hills. This World Game Grant will strengthen Endeavour United Soccer Club and support the vital contribution they make to grassroots sport in this area.

cess further training in project management, facilitation, event management and marketing so that they can progressively assume responsibility for subsequent iterations of the program in 2019 and 2020. The Sir Zelman Cowen Centre is honoured to receive this grant from the Lord Mayor's Charitable Foundation, which will empower the outstanding young women in Aspire to take ownership of the program, to shape their communities from within. Narre Warren's Aya El Kady, one of the participants in the Aspire 2018 program, observes that, "What makes Aspire unique is that it really challenges ostracised, young Muslim women to traverse beyond their comfort zone, requiring them to demonstrate exemplary governance and leadership skills through a train-thetrainer approach, which obliges them to share their skills with their communities. "Aspire provides a voice to the voiceless, by empowering Muslim women to be a force of change in our communities and in wider society."

MARKETING AWARDS FOR TEAM FACEY FACEY Industrial Commercial has been judged the leaders in marketing for the third consecutive year at the REIV Commercial and Industrial Marketing Awards. The Facey team took home two awards at Watermark in Docklands on Thursday 13 September. The successful campaigns were for the sale of a commercial property at 15 Langmore Lane in Berwick and an industrial property at 1,2 and 3/5 Berends Drive in Dandenong. Facey was also a finalist for the campaign run for 11 Levinda Drive in Carrum Downs. Director Mark Bond was thrilled with the success and paid tribute to the dedicated team. “This year’s double win, along with wins in two previous years, cement Facey Industrial Commercial’s position as the most innovative and strategic marketers of commercial real estate in Melbourne’s great South East,” Mr Bond said. REIV president Richard Simpson said the awards are a great opportunity to recognise the increasingly innovative and tailored campaigns. “Each year, the judges are blown away with the level of consideration and attention to detail that goes into these campaigns: this year we’ve seen dedicated websites, a film series and drone photography as well as traditional print advertising, signage and brochures.” ●

HOME FOCUS

THE GRANGE: A HERITAGE CLASSIC THIS historic tri-gabled Victorian homestead (circa 1885) set amidst four hectares (10 acres) of elevated land is a rare heritage offering. Introduced by an avenue of majestic oaks and elms, the first owner of this magnificent country residence was John McMahon, the Lord Mayor of Fitzroy and founder of the Fitzroy Football Club. Most likely his weekend retreat, its plantings are thought to be of a similar age to those in the Fitzroy Gardens. The structure of the home remains true to its origins, with modern concessions and today is a comfortable, well appointed family home with inclusions such as reverse cycle air conditioning, a superb country kitchen with Paul Bocuse oven and beautifully appointed living rooms with harmonious connections to garden terraces and beyond. The homestead is further complemented by a cottage, thought to have been the original home/ stables, divided into two self-contained guest suites. These would perfectly suit a bed and breakfast venture, house a live-in manager or provide extended family/guest accommodation. An impressive drive-through stable complex has been constructed sympathetically to the homestead and is finished to a very high standard. It comprises four stables, tack/feed, loft and hot/cold wash.

Further improvements include a magnificent alfresco pavilion with built in fireplace and views to Westernport Bay. Other features of the property include a fully tiled inground swimming pool, a 60m x 20m show jumping arena and a spring fed dam.

The gardens at The Grange are something to behold! Framed by 130-yearold exotic trees, they include sprawling lawns, clipped hedged borders and colourful beds that burst forth in an everchanging display of seasonal colour. The Grange is within commuting distance

of Melbourne via the Monash Freeway, five mins drive from bustling Pakenham and a short drive to an excellent range of private and public schools. As either a weekend escape or permanent home, its enormous character and charm will afford years of enjoyment. ●

From Tuesday 25 September to Friday 28 September (10am to 12noon and 1.30pm to 3.30pm) and Saturday 29 September (10am to 12noon), kids aged 2 to 12 years can take part in the Garden's Paper Planet free activity. Children's imaginations will run wild in this planet made of paper and natural materials from Cranbourne Gardens. Enliven the space with handmade creatures and critters, vines and flowers, costumes and constructions. During this installation, participants are invited to continually add to the forest and build whole communities. Theatre and play merge as children discover an imaginative world for adventures in this forest of their own making. Paper Planet is an experience that all ages will find inspiring and utterly blissful Then, on Tuesday 2 October and Thursday 4 October at 10.30am, children aged 5 to 12 years (and accompanied by an adult) are invited to go on the Manna Discovery Walk. Go on this school holiday adventure and discover a slice of Cranbourne Gardens' bushland. Be led by an experienced guide along the Manna Walk and seek out the mysteries of the native environment. Get in touch with the land through nature play and a hands-on activity. Pack a picnic and explore the rest of the Gardens after the tour. Bookings are essential and tickets are $5 per person.

The Cranbourne Gardens are bursting with a variety of free and affordable activities these school holidays. Hustwaite’s Dandy dream realised By Hayley Wildes

The Dandenong Stingrays have won their first ever TAC Cup premiership.

Picture: COURTESY OF AFL VICTORIA

Rays-ing the Cup By Hayley Wildes The Dandenong Stingrays are the 2018 TAC Cup Premiers. After 27 years and five grand final losses, the Stingrays finally claimed their maiden TAC Cup Premiership at IKON Park on Saturday afternoon. With the rampant Oakleigh Chargers standing between them and the trophy, the Rays rose to the occasion when it mattered most. Riley Bowman booted the first goal of the game after a tremendous second effort tackle for which he was rewarded with a shot on goal. Despite the best efforts of Lachlan Young and Daniel Frampton in defence, Oakleigh held a seven-point lead at the first break. The second quarter was when the Rays made their premiership move. Of course, it was co-captain Campbell Hustwaite who led from the front.

He was on the bottom of packs, running out of packs and tackling as if his life depended on it. Bailey Williams put through his first major of the day at the four-minute mark, then the speedy Jai Taylor inspired his teammates with a chase down tackle in the middle of the ground, leading to a Toby Bedford goal. Just two minutes later, Hustwaite ran through the middle of the ground, drove the ball deep forward and Ed Cahill snuck through another Dandenong major. It was a four-minute stretch of football that gave Dandenong the confidence it could execute its game plan against the loaded Chargers. The Rays held a 14-point lead at half time, 38-24. Oakleigh kicked a goal just one minute into the third term, but the Rays responded. Finlay Bayne got on the scoreboard, and

then 40 seconds later Lachlan McDonnell slotted a beautiful running goal to have Dandenong 21 points in front. The third quarter turned into a complete arm-wrestle and with 25 minutes of football left in the season, the Rays had a 23-point lead. With 12 minutes to play, Dandenong held a 29-point lead, but the Chargers weren't done and after a Jack Ross goal with five minutes left to play, Oakleigh was just 12 points adrift. Oakleigh's Dylan Williams snapped a goal with two-and-a-half minutes remaining and it was just a goal the difference. The final couple of minutes were frantic, but Dandenong's defence stood tall and simply wouldn't allow the Chargers to get the goal they so desperately craved. The Rays held on for a thrilling six-point win, claiming their maiden premiership in the club's sixth grand final appearance, 12.8 (80) to 11.8 (74).

"It's one of the things that I've had pencilled into my mind since the start of the season. Having the co-captain tag with Mitch Riordan, we just want to make history and it would be pretty special to captain the Stingrays to their first premiership." Back in early July, that was Dandenong Stingrays co-captain Campbell Hustwaite's response to what it would mean to co-captain the Rays to a maiden TAC Cup premiership. Fast forward almost three months, and that goal is now a reality. "It's ridiculous. It was a bit of a dream, but now that it has happened, it's amazing and the feeling for the next few days just won't go away - I won't be able to wipe the smile off my face," Hustwaite said after leading his team to the 2018 TAC Cup Premiership on Saturday afternoon. It's been a season that saw Hustwaite finish equal third in the Morrish Medal (the TAC Cup best and fairest) after a stunningly consistent season, yet in a blow that many at the Stingrays couldn't believe, he was overlooked when combine invites were announced in July. He didn't dwell on that disappointment. Instead it just drove him to work even harder. Now he is a premiership co-captain after playing a starring role in the biggest game of the Rays' proud history. Coach Craig Black spoke about Hustwaite after Saturday's grand final win. "After the setback he got in not getting a combine invite, his character around the club has been incredible - and we knew that internally - but he's gone and played some super footy," he said. "Hopefully clubs can see the character of the young man; he's just a heart and soul player and we couldn't have asked for better leaders at our club." Hustwaite admitted those final frantic minutes went on forever. "I was trying to get the clock to speed up, it was playing tricks on my mind," he said. "I'm just stoked. We were able to fight and scrap and do all the little things - I think it was the mateship that got us over the line; all 23 of us putting in work, instead of just one or two." He finishes his time at the Rays having left quite a legacy.

Black’s Stingrays swansong ends in glory By Hayley Wildes Heading into the big dance with a 0-5 record in grand finals, this Dandenong side was determined to write its own history. It was reward for a truly incredible season from the Stingrays. Just one loss all season was credit to the teamwork and desire to work for one another. Whenever they were challenged throughout the season - including, most importantly, in the grand final - they responded. The likes of co-captain Campbell Hustwaite, Ed Cahill, Riley Bowman, Bailey Wiliams and Zac Foot were sublime on the biggest day of the year. The defence was steadfast against an Oakleigh forward pack that boasted speed and class. Lachlan Young simply wouldn't be beaten, while Daniel Frampton, Lachlan Stenning and Will Hamill were absolutely crucial down the stretch. But in fairness, it was a total team effort; all 36 STAR NEWS

23 players played their role and now they are all premiership players. For coach Craig Black - himself a former Stingrays player - in his final game with Dandenong, it was a fitting way to finish his time at the club. He has driven standards and developed some of the finest players in the land over his time with Dandenong and he heads to Collingwood in a development role as a TAC Cup Premiership coach. After the game, Black spoke about his nerves in those thrilling final minutes. "I was getting really nervous late, as you could imagine - I was counting down every second, but credit to the boys to be able to dig deep in a couple of really important moments," he said. "I thought we set the game up in that second quarter and luckily we were able to hold on. "Will Hamill and a couple of the defenders

just halved key contests and allowed a couple of stoppages late - I was about to run over and push the siren!" From Black's perspective, Dandenong's maiden TAC Cup premiership is reward for everyone involved. "It's a great reward for not just this year, but the people who put in a lot of hard work over 27 years - for our club to finally have success is outstanding and unbelievable," he said. The play of Riley Bowman and Bailey Williams - two key pillars who will be highly sought after in next month's AFL Draft - was crucial. "You just ask your big men to compete and I thought they both did that," Black said. "Riley in the ruck competed really well, which allowed us to use Bailey forward a bit more and a couple of time he just willed himself on the contest and he took a couple of important marks, which was fantastic."

Final report handed down By Russell Bennett The creation of one competition featuring the Alberton and Mid-Gippsland clubs is still on the cards after AFL Gippsland released its Leagues and Competitions Review Final Recommendations Report on Friday night. As part of the final report, there is a recommendation for all current Alberton and nine of the 10 Mid Gippsland clubs to participate in the one competition. The remaining Mid Gippsland club - Yarragon - seems destined for the Ellinbank and District Football League (and Ellinbank and District Netball Association). After feedback provided to AFL Gippsland on the draft recommendations tabled last month, member clubs of the new competition (the ‘Central and Southern Gippsland Competition’) will have the opportunity to determine the governance and administration structure moving forward. A 20-round home and away fixture has been designed, which AFL Gippsland’s report says will “provide old rivalries an opportunity to continue, and alleviate the burden of travel”. Sides would play each opposing team once from Round 1 to Round 15 (including the bye), with Round 16 to Round 20 the ‘rivalry rounds’ over a five-week period (including another bye). Therefore an 18-game home and away season would run over 20 weeks. A top eight would then contest the finals. The first rivalry group would be: Hill End, Newborough, Thorpdale, Trafalgar, and Yallourn-Yallourn North. The second group would be: Boolarra, Yinnar, Mirboo North, Morwell East, and Meeniyan Dumbalk United. The third group would be: Fish Creek, Foster, Stony Creek, Tarwin and Toora. The report states that a one-off cash subsidy of $3500 would be offered to one club within acknowledged jumper clash match-ups. That would go towards the purchase of new playing uniforms across all grades. The acknowledged

According to a statement provided to the News, the AFL Gippsland commission “deemed structural change necessary following Alberton clubs expressing grave concerns about their viability in the current six-team competition”. AFL Gippsland region general manager Ben Joske said the commission had a responsibility to ensure every person in Gippsland had “the opportunity to engage with a stable, vibrant and viable club”. “The AFL Gippsland commission is firmly of the view that for football to flourish in the region it requires a whole-of-region approach,” Joske said. “The future of the six remaining Alberton clubs is dependent on a willingness for the Gippsland football community to embrace change and work together.” Another recommendation from the Final

Recommendations Report is for current South East Football Netball League (SEFNL) club Tooradin-Dalmore and Ellinbank and District Football League (EDFL) outfit Warragul Industrials to join the existing 10 West Gippsland Football Netball Competition (WGFNC) clubs from 2019. A further recommendation from the report is for the development and implementation of “an underage structure that meets the requirements of clubs to field a full complement of teams, whilst giving clubs the best opportunity to retain juniors and transition them into senior footballers”. Originally, AFL Gippsland’s Leagues and Competitions Review Draft Recommendations Report (released late last month) included the introduction of an under-17 age group in place of existing age group structures (typically under16s and under-18s) in all but two of the region’s senior competitions for 2019. The fourth recommendation of the final report now states that in 2019 Ellinbank and

West Gippsland (among others, including the Gippsland League) would retain their under-16s and under-18s. The report states: “A set of draft recommendations were tabled throughout the consultation process which included a move away from U16 and U18 age groups to U17. Following extensive feedback, it was decided that further consultation was required before implementing this across Gippsland, however a trial will be adopted in the East Gippsland Football Netball League in 2019”. The News has been contacted by a number of current West Gippsland clubs who were vehemently opposed to a move away from under16s and under-18s, while many current Mid Gippsland clubs have made it clear through social media that they want no part of the proposed Central and Southern Gippsland Competition. The seventh recommendation of the report is for a junior football structure to be developed in West Gippsland “that is aligned with the demographic and growth expected throughout the region in years to come”. AFL Gippsland will also open discussions with Gippsland League clubs to explore the possibility of an East/West conference structure to be implemented in the future (potentially as soon as 2020). Open dialogue will also be held with AFL South East, AFL Outer East, and interested clubs. AFL Gippsland will now work with clubs and leagues on an implementation strategy for the recommended changes. Any affected stakeholders wanting to appeal against the implementation of the review recommendations must have their applications received by AFL Victoria by 28 September. The WGFNC is set to now include: Bunyip, Cora Lynn, Dalyston, Garfield, Inverloch Kongwak, Kilcunda Bass, Kooweerup, KorumburraBena, Nar Nar Goon, Phillip Island, TooradinDalmore, and the Warragul Industrials.

The Casey Demons have fallen at the final hurdle for the second time in three years. Taking on the Box Hill Hawks in the VFL grand final at Etihad Stadium on Sunday afternoon, the Demons got off to a tremendous start, but were overrun in the second half. The Demons' inaccuracy in front of goal ultimately cost them as they were unable to take full advantage of their dominance when they possessed the momentum for large parts of the game. Within three-and-a-half minutes of the first bounce, Casey had slammed home two goals - a Mykelti Lefau beautiful set shot snap from the boundary, followed by a Tim Smith major after a strong contested mark. It was 15 minutes until another goal was scored. Jay Kennedy-Harris got on the scoreboard with a major, before Jay Lockhart drove the ball deep forward to a running Cory Machaya, who put through another goal. After 20 minutes, the Demons boasted a 26-1 lead. Box Hill kicked their first goal of the game in the 24th minute, but Casey held a convincing 28-7 lead at quarter time. After both teams combined to miss five shots in the first half of the second term, Hawk Dylan Moore finally broke through to goal, cutting Casey's lead to 14 points. A minute later, the Demons responded as Tom Bugg slotted a terrific running goal. It was a quarter of missed opportunities for Casey though, managing just one goal and five behinds. To make matters even more frustrating, Moore slotted his second major after the siren to give the Hawks plenty of momentum heading into the main break. A 17-point half time lead didn't do Casey's dominance justice - they had their chances to put Box Hill away, but were unable to convert. The third quarter got off to a brilliant start for the Demons when Lockhart goaled less than three minutes into the half. Mitchell Lewberwicknews.starcommunity.com.au

is replied a few minutes later with a goal and halfway through the term, when Dallas Willsmore put another one through, Casey's lead was just seven points. Cam Pedersen lifted his team when he kicked truly after taking a big contested mark, but Oliver Hanrahan replied for Box Hill just minutes later. Casey's Angus Scott produced a brilliant running goal after roving the pack, pushing the lead back out to 15 points, but a late Tim O'Brien goal had Box Hill just nine points adrift, 59-50, with one quarter to play. Box Hill captain Andrew Moore inspired his team with an early goal as Casey was left clinging to a two-point lead. Two missed shots on goal for Casey were compounded when Kieran Lovell slotted a running goal to give his side their first lead of the day at the 13-minute mark of the final quarter. Casey couldn't get the ball out of their back half and when Dylan Moore kicked his third goal of the game at the 25-minute mark, the Hawks were 10 points up. Bernie Vince had a chance to trim the lead with just minutes remaining, but his long bomb hit the post in a cruel ending for the retiring Melbourne star. Box Hill claimed the premiership with a 10.12 (72) to 8.14 (62) win. In the big moments, Casey failed to convert; a goalless last quarter and just 4.10 (34) after quarter time was evidence of that. Bailey Fritsch (20 disposals), Corey Wagner (21 disposals, 7 tackles) and Tom Bugg (24 disposals, 7 tackles) were sublime for the Demons, while the backline was led manfully by Declan Keilty, Harrison Petty and Josh Wagner. Despite a heartbreaking end to the season, Casey's fine season can't be overlooked. Under new head coach Jade Rawlings, the Demons played a ruthless style of football and will be back again next year for another tilt at the flag.

Berwick City wins it all By Hayley Wildes The Berwick City Tigers under-14A soccer squad has been playing together for three years and is showing no signs of slowing down. The 2018 campaign was a season of development and achievement for the all-conquering Tigers team - undefeated on the pitch, with players growing into their roles as they worked together to dominate their opposition. Playing in the Football Federation Victoria (FFV) Metropolitan Boys South under-14A competition, the Berwick City side took all before it - scoring an incredible 80 goals in 20 games (including finals), while only conceding eight. In the grand final, played on 16 September in Burwood, the Tigers took on the best team from the West; the North Sunshine Eagles. As it had done all season, Berwick City played with a steely resolve and when chances to attack presented themselves, they took their opportunities. North Sunshine was no match for Berwick City as the side was crowned state champion with a 3-1 win. It capped off not only a remarkable season for Berwick City, but a remarkable three seasons. With the majority of the squad having been together since the under-12s in 2016, the players have showcased their abilities on the state and national stage. Since the beginning of the 2016 season, the team has played 52 matches, scoring 169 goals and conceding just 34 - an almost unheard-of efficiency on both ends of the pitch. Over that time, the side has claimed eight major trophies from various tournaments and championships.

The Berwick City Tigers, from back left: Ollie Pivac (assistant coach), Joel Bandaranayake, Ashton Felix, Joshua Dell'Aquila, Bol Ter, Filip Mihajlovic (captain), Ryan Stephenson, Luka Pivac, Akbar Mohammad, Ali Hallak and Milan Mihajlovic (head coach). Front, from left: Angus Robertson, Dean Garofalo, Darcy Hanna, Omar Wahidi, Adrian Jankovski, Ryan Crasto and Hamish Berreen. Picture: HAYLEY WILDES Head coach Milan Mihajlovic spoke about the way he wants his team to play. "My philosophy is to play an attacking style, keep possession and be compact in defence," he said. The attacking style of play has clearly paid dividends over the past three seasons and in

2017, the team won the Australian Football Skool International Tournament in Shepparton. With 100 teams from across Australia and overseas competing, the then under-13 Tigers team won a thrilling grand final against Sunshine George Cross. With scores locked at one-all at full time, a penalty shoot-out was needed to determine

who would take home the trophy. Neither team gave an inch in the shoot-out, but the Tigers held their nerve and claimed the championship with a 7-6 penalty shoot-out win. With more major tournaments on the horizon, the Berwick City Tigers might be in the market for an even bigger trophy cabinet in the not too distant future.

The Casey Friendship Trophy was presented by Cranbourne chief John McKenna to some of Cranbourne's winning participants.

Cranbourne is ready to take on the best After last year's historic Division 1 Pennant victory, the Cranbourne ladies bowls team has been training hard over the off-season in preparation to take on the best teams in the state. The revised premier league competition has been incorporated into two super leagues, dividing Melbourne metropolitan into two groups - which ultimately means less travel time. Nonetheless, the standard of this competition will be very strong and the Cranbourne ladies are up for the challenge. The first game was scheduled against last year's premier league runner-up Clayton, playing away - a test that the ladies could re-

ally look forward to. The first home game will be in Round 2 on 2 October against Doncaster, starting at 10.30am. The club encourages both the Cranbourne and general Casey community to come along and support the local side. Midweek bowls also starts this week, with three sides competing this year. Division 2 plays at Pakenham, Division 3 plays at home against Berwick, and the six-aside outfit plays at Keysborough. During the pre-season the Casey friendship competition took place with final results being: 1st Cranbourne 664 shots, 2nd Narre War-

ren 600 shots, 3rd Hampton Park 555 shots, 4th Cranbourne RSL 518 shots. The friendship trophy was organised to enhance club camaraderie and bring some fun into bowls. Besides playing bowls, players enjoyed additional fun - engaging in trivial pursuit, picka-box, and charades after each game. Each team took turns hosing the games over four months and a range of prizes were given out after each event, which were all well catered for by the host club. All clubs agreed that it was a great concept that will be an ongoing event.
