NEWS TOURISM APPOINTS A NEW LEADER
CHURCH SAVED FROM FIRE BY MARGARET MACCOLL Quick action by firefighters to halt a bush fire at Grasstree Court Sunrise Beach last Thursday afternoon prevented what could have engulfed a nearby church and residence or spelled disaster for a nearby aged care centre. Noosa Heads fire station officer Matt Phillips said a call was received about 2pm from the Sunrise Beach Uniting Church about smoke coming from neighbouring bushland. With several crews attending a large bush fire near Gympie they grabbed what they could. "We had eight crews there from Noosa, Nambour, Coolum and Buderim and three from Parks and Wildlife," he said. "By about 3.30pm we had it under control." Officer Phillips said thick bushland made
access to the fire difficult. "It started to flare up into the trees," he said. "If it crossed the path the church and residence would have been under threat. "Our concern was it would head for the police station and care centre. We were lucky the wind was going to the east." Uniting Church Reverend Leonie Gaffel said parishioners maintained a fire break between the church and bushland but they had been concerned about the fire load for a while. She said a number of trees had been knocked down during Cyclone Debbie last year, adding to the dry fuel. Officer Phillips said the region was drying out and on Thursday the fire risk was rated high. There are a number of bushland areas carrying a lot of dry fuel and firefighters have been assessing the fire risk and putting together local action plans in the event of a fire, he said. ●

COUNCIL VOTES ON REPORT NOT RECORD Noosa Councillors last week voted not to agree to a proposal put forward by Councillor Ingrid Jackson to video record and live stream Council meetings but did support the preparation of a report on "technical options". Councillor Ingrid Jackson said she would have preferred a decision in principle to give the community the ability to watch their Council's deliberations using the internet as more than 50 other Councils in Australia have already done and she would
be dismayed if it didn't happen at all. "I was pleased that most councillors responded positively to the idea of perhaps doing this sometime in the future," she said. Councillors at last Thursdays Ordinary Meeting voted to ask the CEO to investigate and recommend the most cost-effective technologies, including the possibly of just using audio. The CEO is to report back to Council by late December. "I have researched the costs of doing this at other councils and found they have
achieved live web streaming and recording from as low as $2000," Cr Jackson said. "The recent Queensland Crime and Corruption Commission's Operation Belcarra, which recommended significant changes to local government laws, enunciated four key principles that should apply to local government activities: equity, transparency, integrity and accountability. "Furthermore, the Queensland Right to Information Act makes it clear that the default position of local councils should be to maximise disclosure." ●
NO TIME TO BE BORED THESE HOLIDAYS The Booin Gari festival on Tuesday gave residents and tourists an insight into the local Aboriginal culture. The festival was one of a range of activities on offer in Noosa during the school holidays. There are music events, log rolling, sand castle making, sailing and don't miss seeing author Chris Collins and his funky chicken and gang of puppets at Peregian Beach village at 10am on 1 October. Tourism Noosa have appointed Mantra Group general and area manager Steve McPharlin as its new CEO after he was selected from about 200 applications received across Australia and overseas. The former owner of Noosa Boathouse has more than 25-years experience in the hospitality and tourism industry, working within both the domestic and international markets. He has held senior executive roles with companies including P&O Resorts, Best Western, Voyages Resorts and Coles Group. Tourism Noosa deputy chair Elizabeth Reynolds said Steve's appointment was made unanimously by the Board of Tourism Noosa which reflected his skills and knowledge. "Steve has been working closely with the Tourism Noosa team for the past seven years as Chair, and in various management roles for many years across the tourism, hospitality and accommodation sectors," Elizabeth said. "He is in a unique position to hit the ground running and an initial 12-month contract will commence on October 29, with a focus on meeting a range of strategic short-term goals." Mr McPharlin said "I am thrilled to be stepping into this role and am passionate about ensuring we have a sustainable tourism base that is prosperous and progressive for the Noosa region." Noosa Council Acting Mayor, Frank Wilkie, welcomed the news saying he, along with Councillors and staff, had a positive working relationship with Steve and shared mutual goals of a sustainable tourism industry to benefit the Noosa community. Steve has been living in Noosa since 2008 with his wife and two children. ●

COVER STORY Cooroora Woodworkers Club president.
On patrol
ONE MAN’S MISSION BY MARGARET MACCOLL
A
recipient of both the Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in 2007 and Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in 1989, John has that rare gift you associate with a born leader - a charisma, an ability to make you feel at ease, that you have his full attention. As we walk around the Cooroora Woodworkers Club, of which John is now president, he takes more than a passing interest in members, introducing everyone and chatting about their skills, projects and families. He is very comfortable in his new surroundings but it is a far cry from his former role. John began his military career as a private, joining the Australian Army in 1974. He and his wife of 41 years, Jane, met while they were both privates in the Australian Army in their 20s. They became corporals together. John excelled early in his career, making sergeant in his early 20s, which was uncommon. Then he applied for officer training and worked his way up the ranks to become a General, a rare achievement. He commanded troops at every level including Deputy Chief of the Army. He saw combat action in the first Gulf War in 1991 and spent a further year on
operations in Iraq with Coalition forces in 2006, where he became the first Australian in more than 60 years to be promoted to the rank of General while on combat operations. To say his achievements are impressive are an understatement. As the Director of Strategic Operations of the Multi National Forces in Iraq in 2006 he was awarded the United States Legion of Merit. But the war took its toll on John physically and mentally. In 2006 he returned to Australia "very unwell". "I had pneumonia, I'd been knocked around in an explosion, and I had a busted bone in my shoulder," he said. "It was the worst years - 3000 Iraqis were being killed every month by other Iraqis in an undeclared civil war. (Militant Sunni Islamist organization) Al Qaeda was killing 100 a month. I lost a good mate over there. It was very sad ... I was heartbroken." The scale of horror he witnessed is unimaginable. On his return home John and Jane took a holiday booking into a unit on Hastings Street for three weeks. "I loved it - to be back in Australia, back on the beach. It was a lovely restorative holiday," he said. In 2009 he was attached to the Victorian Government as Interim Head (and later,
Chief of Operations) of the Victoria Bushfire Reconstruction and Recovery Authority, coordinating all Commonwealth, State and nongovernment efforts to recover from the deadly Black Saturday fires. In 2010-11 he returned to the battlefield in the role of commander of all Australian forces in Afghanistan and the wider Middle East area of operations. For his work he was recognized with the Distinguished Service Cross for leadership in action. John had worked hard to keep safe those he was responsible for as commander in Afghanistan but 10 men were killed and 64 wounded - horrible life-changing injuries, limbs lost, eyes lost. "I knew them well," he said. "I spent a lot of time with them. I did patrols. I was ordered by (former Chief of the Defence Force) Angus Houston not to do patrols - it was an order I couldn't comply with. "Because I started in their ranks I had an affinity with soldiers." John returned overcome by grief and guilt which overrode any sense of his achievements. "I came home suffering PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder). It had been accumulating over 20 years," he said.
He spent time seeing a psychiatrist and continues to deal with the issue. "I'm not right now, I never will be," he said. John was being considered to be Chief of the Army. The top job came down to a choice between him and David Morrison. But John retired from the Army in 2012 after 38 years of service. When Jane suggested an overseas holiday he said, "I've used up all my decisions - why not go back to Noosa". "To fill in a rainy afternoon we drove out to an attractive house in a place we'd never heard of - Cooroy." They've lived there now for six years, the longest of any of their 23 homes. Since leaving the army John has been a prominent advocate for the care of veterans, police and other personnel suffering emotional trauma resulting from their service. As a high-ranking officer his words hold merit. "I did hundreds of talks lobbying for change," he said. "I was one of many people who raised the issue. 201721004-LB21-17

"It was met with resistance from defence. They put their heads in the sand - they were not geared up for it." The suicide rate for veterans under 30 years is 2.7 times the national average, John said. "More than 230 Afghanistan veterans have taken their own lives," he said. "Fortyone were killed in action. The war hasn't finished for many veterans. John said much had changed with the government now investing millions of dollars on counselling and care and many non-government organisations operating programs to assist. "People are now aware of the issue, it wasn't in the public dialogue before. "I'm proud of that and I'm glad the government has responded," he said. "Australians do admire army personnel - they may not agree with the politics. Veterans coming home from Vietnam did not have that. It wasn't their fault, most of them were conscripted. That's changed." John discovered woodwork when he was struggling with the effects of military service. "I was feeling pretty blue about four years ago and my wife asked me to do a box for her," he said "As soon as I started doing woodwork
I thought this is terrific. I'm making stuff instead of blowing things up. "It was a lovely feeling - that release. "Woodwork is very distracting. When I'm upset and distressed I can go to the workshop. Just the smell of sawdust - I know I'm making something. "It's a tremendous thing. I've seen that with other veterans taking on other pursuits like painting or owning a dog. "I have a well-equipped shed at home but I do love coming down to the shed with other blokes." "We've got some really talented turners, cabinet makers, carvers here (at the Cooroora Woodworkers Club)," he said. "I've been taught woodworking here and now I can teach others. "There's a real sense here of how can I help you." John is a sought-after speaker, an occasional media commentator and the author of two best-selling books, "Exit Wounds" (on his struggle with the emotional wounds of combat service) and "Leadership in Action". John and Jane are the proud parents of two sons and have three granddaughters, so far. â—?

THE BOLTON REPORT
SANDY BOLTON, NOOSA MP
WE CAN CREATE OUR REALITY OURSELVES Noosa has long known how to take its future into its own hands. Just look at history. Whenever there was a gap in our community services or the collective vision at risk Noosa men and women have worked hard, at times in conjunction with Council or organisations, other times alone; to create solutions to our issues or needs. Community kindergartens, respite care, housing for domestic violence victims, conservation land, all the way to the formation of a variety of sporting and educational facilities. Look at recent activism. The Free Noosa campaign against amalgamation. The deamalgamation. The purchase of Yurol State Forest. This is community activism, and I believe our dictionaries need to be updated as they still have a narrow definition of what this is! This old/new form of community activism is morphing and evolving with new twists as part of the social, economic and environmental innovation realm. It is becoming prevalent as a method to address continued crisis that are not being addressed sufficiently by all levels of government. This includes housing affordability, homelessness and unemployment. So what does the new form of community activism look like? It is where communities are taking their specific issues, and look to 'outside the box' solutions to resolve them through innovative processes and partnerships, open forums, social enterprises and NFP's. A small sample of these 'tweaked' not-for-profits include Sundale and Coast 2 Bay, Sunshine Butterflies and Katie Rose
Cottage, who work in community models to provide solutions to needs. As reported previously, I showcased to the Minister for Innovation and Tourism Development a process involving 30 community leaders and stakeholders in response to the challenge of youth unemployment. This event, and the actions arising, is another example of
community activism. 'If it is to be, it is up to we'. A full report and video of this process can be viewed at www.sandybolton.com Recently there were a number of Facebook discussions in response to the possible purchase by Council of the decommissioned TAFE site. It was surprising how many 'threaders' did not have any knowledge of the
history given extensive media and lobbying over the years. This highlights the importance of new ways to engage residents. To clarify for newcomers to this issue - All efforts by stakeholders and representatives over 5 years to two sets of government failed to see the TAFE reopen, as with other campuses across QLD that were closed. Whether it was right or wrong now becomes irrelevant - it is how we respond that matters. The question at the beginning of my term was simple - allow Noosa to be at the mercy of Government and/or political decisions, or be proactive and empower Noosa by providing alternate pathways to succeed, and in this case - take control of a site? Council, being the community facing level of government was the logical first step in these efforts, and it was vital they had these past 6 months to do their due diligence on behalf of residents. We all look forward to an outcome on this in the next month as part of creating Noosa's vision. Community activism at its best, and I hope you will join in these efforts. In the meantime - for those that would like to keep up to date and obtain facts versus misinformation - just log on to Noosa 360 where updates are posted weekly, or subscribe to our newsletter. You will be invaluable in helping to inform others, whether on FB or otherwise, as well ensuring your MP's office is utilising limited resources wisely! Until next time, enjoy this beautiful spring! ●

STUDY SHOWS ROAD DANGER BY MARGARET MACCOLL A four second gap may be all the time a driver has to find an escape route when they're facing a hazard on the road but learning to identify the hazards and potential escape routes is one way of keeping safer on our roads. At the University of the Sunshine Coast Dr Bridie Scott-Parker has been working with a group of 120 drivers aged 60 to 94 years in a study aimed at building situation awareness skills. Dr Scott-Parker said some people are unaware of the hazards or don't realise they may be the risk to other drivers. Through her study at the USC Adolescent Risk Research Unit (ARRU) she had divided the drivers into two equal groups, an intervention and control group. Using a driver simulator the intervention group has been building their awareness skills. They may identify a hazard or an escape route such as driving into another lane or down into a field. Go Pro cameras in their cars can track their driving skills on real life roads. "With any skill if you're not using it you're losing it," Dr Scott-Parker said. The study has found the training has been effective and Dr Scott-Parker believes it should be shared with other seniors She said 45 minutes training could make such a difference. AN OLDIE BUT A GOODIE An historic brew has been revived by Copperhead Brewery and Restaurant at Cooroy and will become a fundraiser for the Noosa Shire Museum after it was launched yesterday. Copperhead Brewery general manager Matt Cook said a little research led to the discovery of a golden ale that used to be served to travellers at the Settlers Rest, the halfway mark between Brisbane and Gympie. Wanting to give back to the community which has embraced their premises Matt said they hit upon a good recipe for golden ale which will be on tap next week with 50 cents from every beer to be donated to the musuem. "We brewed up 300 litres. It should be really popular and generate some funds quickly," he said. The brewery had just passed its first birthday and were looking for a way to be more involved in the community when the museum approached them looking to generate funds. Matt said they planned to maintain the tap as a charity tap for the region. â—?

CENOTAPH FACELIFT FOR THE CENTENARY OF ARMISTICE BY JIM FAGAN It's taken 96 years but the Tewantin Cenotaph in the town square is getting its first facelift and the aim is to have it restored and ready for the Centenary of Armistice commemoration on Sunday, November 11. The Cenotaph was commissioned 1922 and is carved in sandstone. Over the years several coats of paints have been applied, hiding detailed work of the statue. "We are now removing the paint, installing a new rifle and repointing damaged lettering," Mick Reid, president of the RSL Tewantin Noosa Sub Branch, told Noosa Today. "This year is the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Armistice and with the help of the State Government we are restoring
the Cenotaph to its original form. "While the Cenotaph is a community asset, it is the responsibility of the Veterans of the RSL Sub Branch to maintain." Plans for the Remembrance Day centenary are well advanced and Mr Reid said schoolchildren will be very much involved in the Commemoration Service which will start with a Parade at 10.40am This will include four Light Horsemen in World War 1 uniform who will be the Catafalque Party to man the Cenotaph and a horse with boots reversed on the saddle to symbolise those who had fallen. "My aim is to include students rather than a guest speaker," Mr Reid said. "They will sing the Australian and UK National Anthems and we'll have Jack Frey of St Theresa's Catholic College who this year
was a Premier's Anzac Award recipient and toured the battlefields of the First World War. "He told me how in France he found the gravesite of a 16-year-old soldier and I have asked him to talk about the experience and what it meant to him standing beside the grave. "At 11am we will observe a minute's silence and The Last Post and then six schoolchildren will give a snapshot of the six names on the Cenotaph who did not come back from the First War. "At 11.35am the War Birds, a flight of veteran aircraft from Caboolture, will come up the river and then bank and fly overhead "Council takes over at noon with its Looking Forward to Peace event." â—?
Cenotaph facelift underway.
ELMES EYES COUNCIL RUN Rumours that former Noosa MP Glen Elmes will run in the next Noosa Council election in March 2020 may not be far off the mark. Mr Elmes wasn't ruling out a political come back at local government level when asked last week but said he` would put off making a firm decision on it until about a year out from the election next March. "I've been thinking about it," he said.
"I've had any number of people coming and talking to me about doing it." After a stint in hospital earlier in the year to have his gall bladder removed Mr Elmes declared himself now as fit as a Mallee bull. He said he was happily working at building up his own business, Strategic Pathways Consulting, and a few other projects including Chinese tourism. â—?

WOODIES DO IT FOR THE COMPANY BY MARGARET MACCOLL Each of the Cooroora Woodworkers Club's 100 members has their own reason for being there but all agree that "it's a terrific club." "It's the company of the people. You're always learning something," Yugoslaviaborn retired cabinet maker Simon Haricek, 86, said. "One of the things I like about it is it provides for a lot of community members - it gives them a choice of something to do and somewhere to go," club president John Cantwell said. Wood turner Dennis Donnelley added "a lot come along for coffee and a chat". Men and women aged from their 20s to 90s sign on to a six-day roster to use the club's resources and engage in its companionable environment. Wood carver Jeffrey Fraser creates spoons from sticks, each one a unique artwork. Jim Pound spent many hours making a blanket box which he has donated to the club to be raffled at the show. Members range in skill set from beginners to master craftsmen, the best in their fields. Since the clubs incorporation in 1989 members have made furniture for their houses, wooden toys, jewellery boxes and more than a few have renovated caravans. Andy Esworthy describes it as "the greatest club I've ever been a member of ".

Andy Esworthy gains a helping hand. "Everyone's so welcoming, everyone's willing to share information and help out," he said. Andy's muscular dystrophy prevents him from lifting heavy timbers and restricts his activities but "there's always someone to help, without even asking". This weekend the club will host its annual Woodcraft Show to demonstrate woodworking skills and timber milling, showcase and sell their products and most importantly raise money to fund the club's ongoing operation. "It costs $32,000 just to stay open. We have to make additional funds to buy new machinery and for maintenance. We're always trying to raise money," John said. The club's workshop operates from
Woodturner Dennis Donnelley. a heritage-listed building in Cooroy's Lowermill Precinct keeping alive what used to be the drying kilns of the old timber mill. A wide range of machinery including lathes, drop saws, table saws, planers, jointers and routers plus a myriad of handtools are available to members. The club's milling team collects suitable logs from the district from residents who gift it or want it removed. They cut these into slabs, turning planks and lumber to sell to members of the club or public. The Woodcraft Show will be held from 8.30am on 28 and 29 September at the Cooroy Memorial Hall. BRIDGE WELL USED Just a few notes disputing Tony Wellington’s comments about the use of the Gumtree Drive bridge, Cooroy. This was used by residents of Gumtree Drive, Pine Tree Drive, Grevillea Lane and Swift Park. Prior to closure, this bridge was used extensively by runners, walkers, cyclists (avoiding the main road), viewers of the platypuses and horse riders. In addition, it allowed access to the park via Gumtree Drive for picnics and street parties without having to access it from Cooroy-Noosa Road, thus less traffic and parking which could also be a danger. I think I read that a new bridge would cost approximately $400,000 which seems exorbitant for about a 30-metre span. Can these costings be made available, as I believe a much cheaper option can be achieved? All we need is a pre-fabricated structure about 1.5 metres wide (enough for two persons abreast), an open grid deck in case the creek is in flood and probably two piles each end to stop uplift. Noosa councillors, please take these comments into account before making a decision. Paul Norton, Cooroy
THE GOOD AND THE NOT SO GOOD... There is a lot to be said about the Noosa Council lately, so let’s start with the good. - Their decision to limit parking to four hours at the National Park was more than welcomed, if anything overdue, as four hours is ample time for a surf, run, or walk. - Still on the national park subject, their lack of consultation about that rock wall didn’t reflect well with the local community. Surely expert advice from the likes of Dennis Massoud and co would have been very beneficial. - Now let’s move on to that TAFE nightmare. This council is incompetent, and at a complete loss on that one, and the admission by Mr Wellington that he has no ideas how to deal with it, is the last thing that ratepayers want to hear. - And now to the not so good ... how on Earth this council has managed to fool the majority of their ratepayers by claiming that they have achieved for the first time in three years to complete their capital works? They didn’t - what they actually have done is to come up with a ‘loophole’ by overlapping the capital works schedule over a period of

three, five and 10 years, which makes it impossible to work out what has actually been achieved in a year. Dom Massoni, Verrierdale
COUNCIL BEHIND ON BUDGET Can I refer you to the agenda for this month’s general council committee meeting (17 September) where under Item 6 Financial Report there’s a heading Capital Program: ’Actual Expenditure (excluding commitments) $4.1 million (YTD budget $7.5 million).’ This report continues council’s inability to complete projects within budget timeframes; council has only completed 54.6 per cent of year to date (YTD) budgeted capital works - after two months they are 45.4 per cent behind their yearly budget. John Lobb, Peregian Springs.
GIVE THE IDEA A GO It has been a great pleasure again to read Bob Jarvis in Noosa Today’s Letters. He is the only one I’ve read lately that’s come up with a “win win“ scenario for all mentioned parties in the TAFE saga, including flow-on benefits to the entire local community. As regards the negative comments to come from Tony Wellington and Susie Ormaston, c’mon ... is that all you two have to contribute? Instead of being negative and using the argument that it’s state land and Bob’s proposal will never ’fly’, why not say his ideas have merit? After all, it’s our land anyway ... state or local. Who paid for it originally? WE DID! Our rates and taxes purchased that land back in 1980 with State Government backing. If we can overcome amalgamation because of state political and bureaucratic policies, and redefine what it means for a local council to maintain its identity and future by DE-amalgamation, then surely we can find away to solve such a nexus. Isn’t the Qld State Government AND the elected councillors of the NSC here to represent the wishes of its constituents and help look for solutions to problems? You are NOT elected to put roadblocks in front of great ideas...you are elected to find solutions that benefit us all. Bob Jarvis has a great solution. Find a way to get it done and stop looking for excuses. Mark Griffin, Tewantin
NEWS
THINK OUTSIDE THE SQUARE I read the mayor’s negative response to my idea for the TAFE site. He states correctly that the council is the biggest employer in town - but to “increase business you need to broaden your market“. If these council employees where to be moved to a new location - “where would they go to purchase and spend their wages“ - OK, the Saint Andrews Drive shop would surely benefit. They are also part of the Tewantin businesses - but a great majority of the staff would still be loyal to those that have served them for years and would not worry about being “just down the road“. A pathway through the bush would make a nice healthy walk to the shops. Or, run a lunchtime electric shuttle bus to the CBD. In Europe where biospheres are successful, the word in biosphere “reserve“ means “money reserve“. Here in Noosa the NPA have twisted the word to mean “conservation reserve“. Your letter says “refitting the buildings would come at a significant cost to ratepayers“. Mate, that would be covered by the new rate base collectible from a mega resort in time, not to mention how the council could inject income into the pockets of local tradies and jobs. Excuses, excuses. The community got together and de-amalgamated. Why not arrange and send a delegation to George Street? Tell the State Government what you want, why and how it would benefit all - tell them the tourism advantage for Queensland somewhere for international travellers to the new airport to go and stay. Tell them how it would help traffic problems in Hastings Street - the list goes on and on. Think outside the conservation square. A resort in Pelican Street would only need to worry about accommodation - the town of Tewantin could cater for the rest - like bars, entertainment and food. Do a land swap with state - give them John’s Landing. Instead of thinking why it will not work - try your guts out to make it work. For all those greenies - this idea would not change your environmental footprint one inch. If you can’t sell it, have a look at a long-term lease. I am a strong believer man can live in his environment - the man in the biosphere concept“. Bob Jarvis, Ex- Noosa councillor (with no ntention of re-standing)

CAPSULE SHOWS 25 YEARS OF CHANGE BY MARGARET MACCOLL A quarter of a century old time capsule dug up at Eumundi State School last week showed a time when pens and pencils, textbooks and exercise books were the most important items in a classroom. School principal Mark Kross said 1993 school captains Sacha Sanders and Jessica Howie who were there went it was buried were present to dig it up and tell present day students about their school days. The time capsule opening, which was held to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the naming of the Sunshine Coast, was attended by several past teachers and pupils including a current teacher at the school who was a Year 6 student at the time. The contents of the capsule will be on display at Discover Eumundi Heritage and Visitor Centre for the next three months. Time capsules containing items from the upper and lower grades were then buried and a plaque and stone created by Eumundi Rotary Club laid to mark the spot. Mr Kross said it difficult to decide what to place in the latest capsules. With technology changing so rapidly they decided a USB or digital camera from today would probably be obsolete when the capsule was removed. ●

NOW, ONLY ONE HOME SITE REMAINS
12395178-SN32-18
ONLY one home site remains unclaimed within the remarkable Noosa Springs residential community. It is only a matter of time before the final block in the last precinct is sold, bringing to fruition a dream that began 25 years ago when the Starkey family bought a plot of bushland on the banks of Lake Weyba. The one remaining home site is Lot 12 in the Oasis precinct - an 800sq m level block overlooking the 17th green on Noosa Springs' championship golf course. Like all the Oasis blocks, it boasts commanding views over the golf course, lakes and woodlands, and is only a short stroll to Noosa Springs' clubhouse, spa,

restaurant and resort facilities. It's on the market for $745,000 remarkable value considering the limited number of spacious, golf-frontage sites available on the Sunshine Coast. And while the chance to buy land and build at Noosa Springs become fewer, the good news is two superb villas have just come to market in The Oasis precinct. Two of the first homes to be built within The Oasis, the villas are spacious houses with in-ground pools, floodlit gardens and spectacular views over the golf course. The two-storey home at 13 Springs Crescent has five bedrooms and five bathrooms. At present the fifth bedroom is
fitted out as an office with its own ensuite. The house occupies 523.65sq m of the block's 802sq m area, has ducted airconditioning and a gourmet kitchen with stone benches and a butler's pantry. The home is fully furnished, and the owner will consider selling it complete with its Coco Republic furniture. It is for sale at $2.35 million. Nearby is 17 Springs Crescent, another two-storey villa with five bedrooms and six bathrooms. The open-plan home has an in-ground pool, an outdoor kitchen and, of course, panoramic golf course views. It has European appliances, including a
coffee maker, ducted air-conditioning and Travertine floors. It is listed at $2.175 million. Situated within a secure, gated precinct, only 3km from Hastings Street and close to Noosa National Park and the region's spectacular beaches, The Oasis has its own body corporate dedicated to the management and maintenance of its parkland and streetscapes. PROPERTY NEWS
GAINING INDUSTRY INSIGHTS NOOSA PRESTIGE
THE dynamics for auctions has never been better. With tight supply and huge demand continuing to drive the local property market, auctions now make up an increasing percentage of overall listings and sales. Nearly 40 local real estate principals and agents had the chance to stay abreast and skilled on auction methodology and gain valuable market insights at Noosa Today's real estate seminar held last Friday. The first in a series of three seminars featuring The Auction Group founder Gordon Macdonald, agents were given the foundation to master the fundamentals of the auction method, from listing, to selling under the hammer and more. Special guest, Paul Bevan was able to offer the gathered property professionals market insights. National sales manager of RealEstateView - one Australia's largest online property portals - Mr Bevan was also able to answer a key question: How do you know who is actively looking to sell their property?
NOOSA has become Queensland's most prestigious property market. The latest data from the Real Estate Institute of Queensland revealed Noosa's annual median house price rose 6.9 percent over the year to June to $695,000, and unit prices grew 10.2 percent to $540,000.
Property prices have eclipsed Brisbane and the Gold Coast, where the median house prices was $673,000 and $540,000 respectively. REIQ chief executive officer Antonia Mercorella said Noosa had all the ingredients for price growth. "This is a highly desirable part of the world, with stunning natural features, world-class beaches, beautiful climate year-round, outstanding shopping and dining precincts, and, crucially, exclusivity," she said. "There is limited housing supply being added to Noosa and competition is obviously driving price growth. "Looking forward, once the Bruce Highway upgrades are completed and commuting to Brisbane becomes more feasible, it's likely we'll see added demand for Sunshine Coast living. "This area would benefit from greater supply levels, undoubtedly." The Sunshine Coast region delivered similarly strong results for the year to June 2018, with the median house price growing 6.5 per cent to $575,000. â—?
The Auction Group founder Gordon Macdonald.
View is one of the top three property portals in Australia, offering competitive pricing and the innovative Property 360 tool, which offers price estimates and suburb data for agents, vendors and consumers. Gordon McDonald will facilitate two more auction training sessions for agents, on 19 October and 16 November, from 8.30-10.30am The Boathouse, Gympie Terrace, Noosaville. â—? RealEstateView national sales manager Paul Bevan addresses agents and principals at the Noosa Today real estate seminar.

Some blokes are happy to stick to the online dating scene and it can work for some, but so many complain that it's a long drawn out process which invariably results in no connection once they meet face to face. Local introduction agent, F2F provide a much-needed alternative for the growing single population of the Sunshine Coast by throwing fun, friendly get-togethers with wall to wall singles. The point is to cut through the online facade straight away and enjoy a night out at one their classy little wine bars meeting new people, having a few drinks and perhaps, finding a great connection with someone. F2F host Hollie says the men are more nervous than the women. "It surprises me. Brisbane men are not the same as Noosa men. Our guys are quite nervous and although they are really over the online let-downs, they need that little nudge to take themselves out of their comfort zone," she says. "I work closely with my members and guests who are coming to the events. I'm the wingman. It gives me a great deal of satisfaction to ease their minds and get to know them enough that it feels like a get-together with friends on the night. Most people are relieved to have a friendly face they can trust in their corner, and then after a few minutes, the nerves are gone and they are all over it." "I'm here for questions, advice and of course, I am always thinking a few

steps ahead with some potential pairings. I can't say specifically who for these events, but I can certainly place people in the same room and make it a comfortable and fun night where the possibilities are endless," she says. "This will be a great opportunity to get out on the town for a lovely night with new friends. I have a lot of fun doing this and my guests sure do too. I can't wait for October 13 to roll around and see what unfolds. I'm hoping to have 40 singles which is enough for everyone to blend in a little." Hollie also provides a more tailored service for date coaching for those who need a little extra support to get back out there. Everything from conversation, confidence, dressing, texting, online profiles, advice and etiquette, Hollie is genuine and knows her what she's talking about. Follow F2F on Facebook and enjoy all the advice and articles to help you on your way as well as event alerts. Embassy XO Private Wine Bar provides the perfect venue for the next Singles Evening on Saturday 13 October. Ages 35-55 (ish). If you are outside this age range, send through your details via the website so Hollie can curate an evening for you. If you want to meet that special someone, this is your best shot! If what you're doing isn't working, then what have you got to lose? Get tickets and find out more about the date coach services at www.f2fintroductions.com ●

A TRIUMPHANT RETURN FROM HEART BY HOLLIE HARRIS After an outstanding program delighted Gympie residents and Michael Caton last year, the program for Heart of Gold, which runs from the 4-7th of October, had big shoes to fill. Yet again they have made a triumphant return, boasting a line up of 120+ short films that celebrate the human spirit. Film lovers of all ages; from families, weekenders and students, will flock to the Gympie Civic Centre to watch the outstanding program of short films - 83 of them screening in Queensland for the first time! Heart of Gold is the biggest short film festival in Queensland and is known for its unique mission and structure. Films screened at the festival are there because they have the ability to deeply resonate with the viewer in an inspiring, heartwarming or thought-provoking way. This year, Heart of Gold moves into its second decade as a festival, and the Artistic Director, Emily Avila, shares that is has no plans in slowing down.
"This year's program continues to grow Heart of Gold's reputation for outstanding short films - we have the Queensland premieres of Cannes, Sundance and Berlinale winners, plus the Australian premiere of DreamWorks' animation Bilby", says Avila. Everyday there is something different for audiences to experience. As usual, the festival opens with a party - an exciting selection of shorts, a fire ceremony and musical legends Hat Fitz and Cara. Friday hosts Irish Shorts, where hungry viewers can enjoy the famous Heart of Gold Irish stew beforehand, as well as Late Night Comedy, a raucous session that never disappoints. Saturday is the best chance to meet
the filmmakers behind these short films and help them celebrate with live music and high tea at the Awards Ceremony. Leonie Kingdom, a musician on the rise from Hervey Bay, will be returning to the festival to play at the ceremony. Saturday will also host the feature film Backtrack Boys, a documentary sharing the true story of a legendary dog jumping team in Armidale, providing the space three boys need to turn their lives around. On Sunday, the Backtrack team from the film will be hosting a dog jumping display for all the families and friends at the festival, along with a Q+A about the program. It is all part of the Family Day Sunday, which will include sessions of
shorts especially curated for kids, as well as a range of interactive workshops and activities. Highlights in the Sunday program include Bluey, a Queensland made animation from LUDO, which is set to fill lounge rooms with joy when it joins ABC Kids. A very special screening of Bilby, a DreamWorks's animation set in Australia that has its Australian Premiere at Heart of Gold will also be a highlight. The energy at the festival will be truly electric; filled with eager audiences, as well as filmmakers from all around the world coming to this regional arts hub to celebrate their film's selection, and to meet the people who connect to their films. Sensational events, inspiring guests, as well as a competitive program of quality short films, the 11th Heart of Gold Film Festival is not something you want to miss, so book now and prepare to be amazed. When: 4 - 7 October 2018 Where: The Gympie Civic Centre, 32-34 Mellor Street, Gympie QLD 4570 Tickets: www.heartofgold.com.au ●

Artist Pam Taylor will be guest tutor at Art After Dark.
ART COMES OUT AFTER DARK It might sound a bit like a pick up line but Art After Dark is really an initiative of Noosa Arts and Crafts to bring budding artists together in a social setting. Spokeswoman Tricia Bradford said people come along to Wallace House for a night of champagne, snacks and a whole lot of fun then take home a canvas of their efforts. On September 27 guest instructor will be award winning artist Pam Taylor whose aim is to inspire artists to create their own impressions of old Queenslanders. "An interpretation of Pam's paintings will take you down memory lane of Queensland houses in Brisbane and the surrounding hilly suburbs at sunset, using colourful paint tones and lots of patterns, stamped with stencils," Tricia
said. "Tall palm trees and violet jacarandas often completed the vista around these colourfully painted homes. Simple blocking in of colour, detail and foliage are styles a novice will be able to achieve, she said. "Her paintings usually start with a colour idea, and then evolve into compositions in which colour becomes the primary subject," Tricia said. Art After Dark nights are held on the last Thursday of each month. In October the group will have life drawing with another award winning artist, Wendy Epp. Phone 5474 1211 or email create@ noosaartsandcrafts.org.au to book for the event from 5.30-9pm on Thursday 27 September at Wallace House, Wallace Park, Noosaville Cost is $60. â—?

Sunday's Noosa Beach Classic Car Show will have a distinctly British flavour this year. Cars from the Old Country are being celebrated for the 30th anniversary show, so organisers are expecting a large contingent of Brit metal amongst the 300 expected cars on display. Noosa's Lions Park is set to buzz with millions of dollars' worth of classic cars. The annual event always attracts large numbers of local and visiting enthusiasts as part of the long weekend. Members of the Noosa Beach Classic Car Club showed off some of their rare British beauties last weekend ahead of the show, all displaying the design elegance associated with 1950s vehicles. Gathered were a 1953 Bristol 403 - one of just 281 built - a 1953 Riley 2.5-litre RMF, 1950 Riley Drophead Coupe 2.5-litre RMD and 1955 Riley Pathfinder.

GOING FULL TILT AT THE MASTERS Columnist presents the Noosa Today perspective to Portuguese TV.

history as the first women's masters world champion and seems uncharacteristically jumpy, while Gary "Kong" Elkerton, who's already got three master's titles, tells me he's lost 20 kilos in training for the event and desperately wants to win again. Even drywitted Simon Anderson is deadly serious, restricting himself to a meagre half dozen glasses of the excellent local vinho branca. The sight that greets us for the contest start the next morning is a bit of a shock. A couple of A-frame beachies ribbed by clumps of reef, the Santa Barbara lineup turns from do-able to washing machine every 15 minutes or so, as rival swells push around the point and head sideways down the beach. Combined with the high tide backwash, conditions are, um, interesting. The general rumble is along the lines of, you brought the best senior surfers in the world all this way to surf this? But Santa Barbara goes from zero to hero in a nanosecond, as we are soon witnessing. And out in the shifting peaks there are shocks and surprises. Early heats reveal Shane Beschen as the form surfer of the Masters, Layne's only likely rival is multiple world champ Frieda Zamba, and chunky Rob Bain is on fire in the old farts. Last man invited, somewhat controversially, the affable Bainy might go all the way. But what is this piece of crap Tom Curren is riding and why? And why can't Kong catch a wave?
Two of the greatest surfers of their eras are really struggling with their equipment choices. The bars at the beach and at our hotel in town are full of bonhomie and clinking of glasses, but by the second night there is serious friction in the camp. The old boys might be here for the fun but they're also here for the money, and a ridiculous format has resulted in a competitor revolt. In the Grand Masters, the Simon Anderson camp wins, at the expense of Hawaiian Michael Ho's real shot at taking the title. The passion's still there and so is the fire in the belly! Michael is crying on the terrace while Simon is looking unshakeable on the other side of the competitor area. Since I'm close to both, I hide in the bar. One of the most likeable guys on tour in the '90s, and a serious contender in the Masters of the early 2000s, was WA's Dave Macaulay, whose daughter Bronte is now on the world tour. I've always liked Macca and am stoked to see him make the final cut, alongside Sunny Garcia and Derek Ho. But from the bottom of the pack, it is Macca who looks like a contender. So finals day in marginal surf and it's an Aussie trifecta - Bainy takes Cheyne in the Grand Masters, Layne takes out Rochelle Ballard in the WoMasters, and (unbelievably) Macca takes out form surfer Beschen in the Masters.

The plane dips a wing and we drop through the cloud cover to catch our first view of the island of Sao Miguel, a green and pleasant coast of rugged cliffs and little coves, dotted with colourful farmhouses that reminds me of Jersey and Guernsey. Plop! I'm in the tin shed airport where there's no one to meet me, so I let a cab driver rip me off for a 10-minute run into the city of Ponta Delgado, whose architectural epicenter is not the Hotel VIP Executive, a steel and glass palace on a roundabout above the old town. My name is not on the rooms list. We're not off to a good start, me and the Azores Islands. Then suddenly I'm grabbed in a bear hug from behind. I'm about to be dragged into an alley and have my body parts stolen. But no, it's Kirk Pengilly with a smile beaming below his pencil thin moustache and we adjourn to the bar while the reception staff sort it out. From this point, this dot in the mid-Atlantic begins to look a whole lot better. I'm here at the invitation of the local tourism authority as one of four international journalists covering the WSL World Masters Surfing Championships, staging a comeback after a seven-year gap. When I ran the event 20 years ago the Masters were aged 35 to 44, the Grand Masters 45 to 55, and there were no women. Now there is a women's division, the Masters are 45 to 54, and the Grand Masters are 55 plus, with Australia's Simon Anderson and Terry Richardson the codgers of the comp at 64 and 63 respectively. When I'm finally connected with the rest of the media contingent - Julio from Brazil, Joao from Portugal and old mate Jamie Brisick from Malibu - we are whisked out to the contest site above the town of Santa Barbara for a sunset press conference, at which the irrepressible former Masters champ Cheyne Horan, who was once married to a Brazilian, delivers a hilarious welcome speech in Portuguese. At the dinner that follows, all the good old boys seem to be relaxed and happy, although I detect some nervousness from unexpected places. Layne Beachley, who has nothing left to prove, wants to make

CHARITY GOLF DAY - SMILES ARE PAR FOR THE COURSE A good day of golf and the chance to help sick and disadvantaged children had members of clubs across Noosa heading in droves for the Noosa Golf Club last Friday. More than a decade since it was begun by Glenn "Puck" Puckeridge the Smile for a Child charity golf day aimed to raise another $25,000 to add to the $350,000 already donated to charities including Sunshine Butterflies, Starlight Children's Foundation, SunnyKids, KIDS Foundation, the Australian Himalayan Foundation and Noosa special case individuals. In 2007 Puck took the idea of combining forces to the managers of the Noosa Combined Clubs and now there are five clubs involved: Sunshine Beach Surf Life Saving Club, Noosa Heads Surf Life Saving Club, Noosa Yacht and Rowing Club, Tewantin Noosa RSL and Noosa Golf Club. "It's important for our clubs to show that they are beneficial to the community," he said. Puck said it wasn't hard to get the community on board and now the players and sponsors keep coming back year after year with a little help from "Little" Jo Power and a team of volunteers who donate their time to round them up. Each year the five clubs and Smile for a Child patrons Evonne Goolagong Cawley and Roger Cawley convene to determine where the money will be allocated. ●

BETWEEN THE FLAGS
RON LANE
BUSY SEASON AHEAD ON THE BEACH If the increasingly large crowds of people on our streets and beaches are any indication then 2018/19 season will be a very busy one indeed. Last Saturday morning at 7am the flags once again went up on beaches around Australia and our lifesavers again relieved the professional lifeguards of their weekend duties. For Sunshine and Noosa both clubs reported good patrol attendance. To all beach goers don't forget those people in the red and yellow uniforms are your friends so don't be afraid to ask for advice regarding adjacent beaches; in particular those unpatrolled beaches of National Park and the very beautiful but dangerous Alexandria Bay. Always remember when you see those wearing the red and yellow uniforms they are not strangers their just friends you haven't met. The winter months have been both busy and successful for our clubs. At the recent Endurance Championships held at Alexandra Headlands Noosa and Sunshine did well; both coming home with medals. The most pleasing aspect was that they were won in events covering all aspects of lifesaving. Being endurance and not just short course gives a better indication as to their level of fitness. For this we extend a well done to all coaches in particular Head Coaches Daren Mercer (Noosa) and Josh Minogue (Sunshine). For Josh a virtual new comer to the world of coaching his results have been outstanding: his being named Sunshine Coast Rookie Coach of the Year was well
Henry Young deserved. Regarding Darren since taking the position of Noosa Head Coach his coaching over the years has taken the club at
both state and national titles to levels never before imagined. Well done to both. This Friday 28 at Woombye family
HOOK, LINE & SINKER PLENTY OF FISH IN THE RIVER With windy conditions prevailing for most of the weekend only the larger craft made the run outside, up on North Reef where Maori cod, moses perch, tailor, snapper, coral bream and sweetlip have been taken. Live baits have been working well fished hard on the bottom with plenty of jewies also on the chew. Ganged pilchards on 4/0 gangs have been great on the snapper fished through a burley trail. Sunshine Reef has seen some nice Venus tusk fish, squire, pearl perch, Maori cod and the odd long tail tuna. Halls reef has been good for grassy sweetlip, snapper and Maori cod. Strip baits of slimey mackerel, bonito or mullet fillet have worked extremely well. Working curly tail plastics hard against the bottom has also been a great option in this area. The four and five inch size smeared with a scent has been working well. Make sure your jig heads are heavy enough to get you to the bottom and let the motion of the ocean do the work. On the beaches: Noosa's North Shore has been packed with four wheel drivers making their way up for the school holidays. There is plenty on offer for beach anglers with tailor and jew both taken north of Teewah. Big baits of mullet or pilchards have been enticing some nice fish, with most of the bigger units taken on the larger evening tide. For the kids, light surf running ball sinker rigs have been working well on the whiting and dart using fresh worms and noosatoday.com.au
small peeled prawns as bait. Cast to the back of the gutter and slowly work across the bottom should see a result. On the southern beaches jewies have been caught fishing at night on live baits and fresh dead baits down around Stummers Creek and the rocks at Yaroomba. The river has been really firing with some quality flathead having been caught throughout the entire system. The lower reaches of the river proving to be the stand out on the run out tide. Drifting live herring has worked well along with soft plastics. For the whiting anglers Weyba Creek, Munna Point and the Dog Beach have been producing a number of fish. Live worms and prawns have been the best baits for bream and whiting using size 6 Bloodworm hooks. Tewantin Marina, the first ski run and the Munna Point camp grounds have been producing a variety of trevally species. Surface lure like walkers and poppers have been great first thing in the morning. Soft plastic lures have also performed well. Trolling hard bodied lures has also been working well when trying to find the schooled fish. The sort after mangrove jack have been taken around the mouth of Lake Cootharabah and the Weyba Bridge area. Live baits of herring or poddy mullet have been the go to bait. So On behalf of Jack Mangrove, best of luck on your fishing adventures! â—?
friends, life members and club mates will gather to say good bye to Life Member and club mate Henry Thomas "Campbell" Young of the Noosa club. Henry who died after a long battle with cancer, joined in 1956 obtained his bronze in 1957 and in the years ahead achieved the rank of Chief Instructor (Chief Training Officer) a position he held for several seasons. Apart from training rookies for their bronze medallion to me his greatest attribute was his service; first his service to the community of Noosa as a patrolling lifesaver and second and above all as service to his country as a professional soldier—a Digger. With service in Malaya, Thailand and two tours of duty in Vietnam—no one could ask for more of any man. On 29 September this year lets us all stop and spare a thought for those who did not make it home. I am of course referring to our members of that organization that we too often take for granted, the Queensland Police Force. In particular those "who gave their lives while protecting our community." In our surf clubs we have indeed been blessed, for despite many members joining the Force none as yet have paid the supreme sacrifice-- and pray God they never will. To all families of those who have, we extend our sincere condolence and best wishers. For our clubbies who have joined the boys in blue we also extend our best wishers and take pride in the fact that they have passed our way. To one and all we say-- Via Con Dios. â—?
