Out of apparent boredom, a Noble Park man has wielded a silver dessert spoon as he held up a local service station and bottle shop, the County Court of Victoria has heard. Robert McLeod, 47, pleaded guilty to two counts of attempted armed robbery as well as the theft of three Crunchie chocolate bars from the servo in the early afternoon of 25 September 2017. At first, the servo worker who knew McLeod as a regular customer thought the accused was joking. That was before McLeod held the spoon to the worker’s face and repeated his demand for cash. McLeod then walked back to his home at a supervised residential care facility, and ate the Crunchies in his room. The same afternoon, at a nearby bottle shop, he demanded money and held the spoon up so the handle was displayed. The frightened worker thought it was a knife. The worker and a customer fled, and McLeod remained pacing through the shop for a while. He was arrested at his home at the facility that afternoon. He told police he took the spoon from a drawer at the facility and attempted the robberies out of boredom. He didn’t enjoy living in a supervised residential care facility, apparently with little to do except watch TV, Judge Gabriele Cannon noted in sentencing on 26 September. McLeod was said to have preferred jail where he enjoyed companionship and being the “centre of attention”. Judge Cannon said it was of great concern

that McLeod had committed similar offences in the past, including ordering meals at restaurants and then threatening staff with knives and demanding money. He’d received community corrections orders and jail terms of up to 35 months. “While your offending in some ways has been rather pathetic, it’s been also very frightening for the people you’ve threatened. “At the very least you’re a nuisance. “At the most, you’re someone who behaves in a very frightening way to people who are trying to do no more than do their job.” It was no comfort to the victims that McLeod was not motivated by “money, greed or drugs”. However, McLeod’s moral culpability was reduced by his moderate intellectual disability, which had a “great deal to do with your offending conduct”. Prior to sentencing, an extensive support and supervision plan was devised by DHHS and Corrections Victoria to occupy McLeod. He had “fairly poor” rehabilitation prospects, Judge Cannon said. “The problem is you appear to offend to entertain yourself, to get attention and also because you prefer life in jail to life in the community.” Declaring she couldn’t “warehouse” McLeod in jail, Judge Cannon sentenced him to a three-year supervised community corrections order including mental health treatment and a justice plan. He was also jailed for 366 days, already served in pre-sentence remand.

IN BRIEF Senior fights off home intruder

Fake cop accused over fake ‘arrest’ An man has been refused bail after allegedly impersonating a Dandenong-based police member with the same name to threaten his own ex-partner and her friend. The 33-year-old took photos of the unsuspecting family violence unit officer's identity card and badge while being served a full family-violence intervention order, police told Dandenong Magistrate's Court on 24 September. After the encounter, he rang his ex-partner on a private number, the court heard. The man claimed to be the police officer who shared his name, and that she was under arrest, remand liaison officer Sergeant Chris Marlow told the hearing. The man repeated the threat by text message, adding “get on the ground, stay down, stop resisting”, according to police. Then followed further private number calls and Facebook messages. In one, the man claimed he was going to take a “box of pills”, the court heard. He had recently threatened her that if she

was seeing anyone, he would break the “f***ing c***’s legs”. On a private number, the man allegedly called the ex-partner’s friend. Pretending to be the police member, he told the victim to “get down on the ground, c***”, Sgt Marlow said. “Stay away from (the ex-partner).” He later sent the victim a photograph of the police member’s waist band kit including his gun, holster, badge and photo, police alleged. In a police interview, the man denied impersonating the officer, the court heard. He initially denied he had the offending photos before he showed them on his phone to police, the court heard. Sgt Marlow said the man’s “unpredictable” behaviour and “complete lack of respect” for the intervention order was of “serious concern”. “If he was placed on bail, it would place the victim and her daughter at risk of repercussions.” The man from Officer had just been released from serving 14 months jail for family violence against the same ex-partner, the court heard. His previous convictions included failing to

stop a vehicle despite police directions, burglary, breaching bail and resisting police. Since being released from jail, his mental state had “deteriorated”, defence lawyer Bridie O’Malley said. If bailed, the man would be taken straight to Dandenong Hospital mental-health ward. He offended soon after being discharged from a seven-day stint in hospital, seemingly after failing to follow his “treatment schedule”. His landlord had since revoked the man’s tenancy, the court heard. Magistrate Pauline Spencer ordered for a Forensicare psychiatrist to liaise with custody staff to ensure the man was correctly medicated while in custody. She refused bail due to the unacceptable risk of reoffending, and of endangering the victim and the public. The prosecution case was “straight-forward” and “strong”, she said. “The safety of the victim is very important.” The man was remanded to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 9 October.

Our councils are prepared for anything Four councils have joined forces on water and bushfire safety ahead of the summer season. Greater Dandenong will join with Kingston, Frankston and Mornington Peninsula to launch Operation Emergency Ready at Harmony Square, Dandenong. The event on Saturday, 13 October will include safety demonstrations and interactions from CFA, SES and MFB members. The campaign includes booklets, eight preparedness videos and an interactive website to help people make emergency plans. Greater Dandenong mayor Youhorn Chea said the awareness-raising was necessary, given a quarter of residents in the four council areas had arrived in Australia only in the past decade. "This event is not only an opportunity to learn more about what these services do but also a chance to learn more about the role everyone can play in being emergency ready," Cr Chea said. Having an emergency action plan helps families to know what to do in times of emergency, Kingston mayor Steve Staikos said. "It's always better to be safe than sorry." The need was demonstrated earlier this year when a bushfire caused a community evacuation in Carrum Downs. We don't know how we will react in an emergency until it happens," Frankston mayor Colin Hampton said. "But having everything you need ready to go means that you can grab what you need most, without wasting time by over thinking it." Operation Emergency Ready is a free event. It runs 10am to 3pm on Saturday, 13 October.

Greater Dandenong CIU detectives have seized allegedly stolen property including an Audi vehicle and a rare racing motorbike during a raid of a Noble Park North residence. The Audi was allegedly stolen in a burglary in Balaclava in August, the bike from a burglary in Ashwood, police say. The raid was part of an investigation into numerous deceptions involving stolen credit cards, Detective Senior Constable Bree Jarvis said. A 46-year-old Noble Park North man was arrested at the scene. He has so far been charged with 29 offences, including theft, obtaining property by deception and handling stolen goods. As part of the raid, police made "subsequent enquiries" and also seized stolen car parts from a neighbouring unit. A 25-year old man, who occupied the unit, was wanted on several outstanding arrest warrants. He was charged with vehicle theft and drug offences. Both men were bailed to appear at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 26 November. A 27-year-old female occupant at the unit was also arrested on outstanding warrants. She was bailed to appear at Ringwood Magistrates' Court on 26 February.

A smart bus connection By Brendan Rees A $500 million bus network that will see a huge investment in bus links in the south-east would be in place by the end of 2019 - if the Greens have any say after the State Election in November. The plan, announced on Tuesday 25 September, included upgrading some of the south-east's busiest bus routes to SmartBus. This will increase some priority routes to 10 minute frequencies, with longer hours of operation, real-time information at bus stops, direct routes and electric buses. The Greens will also instigate a metropolitan wide bus review to provide more frequent and direct services and expand coverage to public transport dead zones. Victorian Greens MP for the South-Eastern Metropolitan region, Nina Springle said "big promises" had been made by the Andrews Government recently that will "take 20 or more years to take effect".

Victorian Greens MP for the South-Eastern Metropolitan region, Nina Springle plans to increase bus connections in the south-east. 185695 Picture: ROB CAREW "It is absolutely imperative that we properly invest in a decent and reliable bus network so that cars are not the one and only option for getting around," she said. "Estimates suggest SmartBus services remove several thousand vehicles from Melbourne's roads every day; as they are a fast and

frequent alternative to car use." The priority routes in South-Eastern Metropolitan are: Route 708: Carrum to Hampton via Southland Shopping Centre. Route 788: Frankston to Portsea via Dromana, Rosebud, Sorrento. Combine routes 791 and 841: Frankston, Cranbourne, Narre Warren. Route 824: Moorabbin to Keysborough via Clayton, Westall. Route 828: Hampton to Berwick Station via Southland Shopping Centre, Dandenong. Victorian Greens MP and public transport spokesman Sam Hibbins said: "For too long Labor and Liberal have neglected Melbourne's buses, despite so many people relying on them." Minister for Public Transport Jacinta Allan said the Greens announcement was "just more hot air from the do nothing Greens political party - you can't trust them to deliver anything".

· · · · ·

"We've added new bus routes, improved connections and updated timetables on almost 70 services across the south east," she said. "From removing level crossings, adding hundreds of additional train, tram and bus services and building the Metro Tunnel - we're getting it done." Ms Allan said the State Government had invested more than $200 million to improve Victoria's bus network and continue to work with local communities to deliver better routes and more travel options. Opposition public transport spokesman David Davis said as Labor had been in power for 15 of the last 19 years that "(the) failure to invest in buses is largely their fault." "They are a tired Government; they've run out of ideas." He added the member for Narre Warren North, Luke Donnellan lived in Fitzroy "so will never have to catch a local bus." "In the case of the Greens it is a little bit of fairies at the bottom of the garden."

MPs pledge homeless fix in lead-up to state election By Cam Lucadou-Wells

12400611-CG41-18

What are state political parties promising to fix the alarming state of local homelessness? Greater Dandenong has been recently identified as one of the homeless hotspots in Victoria and Australia. The electorates of Dandenong, Keysborough, Mulgrave and Clarinda are among the 'top 20' in the state, according to analysis by Council for Homeless Persons (CHP). The Dandenong seat alone has an estimated 1100-plus people experiencing homelessness. The CHP is calling for more social housing

to address the lack of affordable one- or twobedroom dwellings in the area and to reduce an 80,000-long public-housing waiting list across Victoria. The State Government argues it is planning to build 2,200 social housing homes in five years, with help to community housing providers to build more. In Dandenong, the Government is also building homes for supportive housing, as part of a $45.5 million 'sleeping rough' plan. Under the program, assertive outreach teams will help people sleeping rough. They are housed in supportive housing for

two-year periods, and helped to overcome complex underlying issues such as mental health, domestic violence, family background and alcohol and drug battles. The Greens have upped the ante, with a policy of 40,000 new public housing dwellings over the next six years. Greens South-East Metro MP and deputy leader Nina Springle said it would be the "biggest investment in the public housing system in decades". "(It) is exactly what is needed to start addressing the homelessness crisis." Dandenong Greens candidate Rhonda Ga-

rad said the lack of affordable rentals and public housing had a dramatic effect on homelessness rates in Greater Dandenong. "Only the Greens are taking the issue seriously, and have a plan to fix it." The Government provides more than $18 million for homelessness services in Southern Melbourne Region, including $2.9 million for youth homelessness assistance in Dandenong. It also supports more than 4700 people with private rental assistance to keep a roof over their heads. Liberals housing spokeswoman Georgie Crozier did not respond by deadline.

Stop-starts: the agony By Cam Lucadou-Wells For many commuters, there’s unfortunately no avoiding the notoriously choked arterial, the South Gippsland Highway. Even when Mark Lanyon leaves home at 7am, his work commute from Noble Park to Lyndhurst is overwhelmingly congested. Within 20 minutes, he reaches Dandenong Bypass. Then the last few kilometres via the Bypass and the South Gippy takes at least another 20 minutes. That’s on a good day. At worst, the trip has taken Mr Lanyon 100 minutes. The afternoon peak on the highway starts as early as 2.30pm, when the early-morning shift workers head home. “You’re just going nowhere and just burning fuel. “By the time you get to Greens Road, you’re just finished.” Mr Lanyon believes the highway’s bottlenecks need to be eliminated. It needs to be widened to three lanes “all the way to Cranbourne” - replicating the recent upgrade of the Pound-Abbotts roads section. The level crossing boom gates near the intersection of Princes Highway also has to go. For Greg Hardy, it’s hard to nominate which of the five or six arterials are worse on his way from Cranbourne to his Keysborough workplace. In the afternoons, he grinds to a halt on the South Gippy as it floods with traffic from the adjoining freeway. “It’s annoying as hell. “Sometimes you’re sitting there stationary for five minutes at a time, doing nothing.”

Maree Davenport and Keysborough Liberal candidate Darrel Taylor. 185712

Mr Hardy hopes that the completion of the Thompson Road upgrade will take traffic off the highway. Kerry Ford’s commute from Cranbourne to Mentone takes up to two hours on weekdays. On Saturdays, it’s usually just 35 minutes. “By the time you get home, it’s like working a 12-hour day.” Over the week, it can be up to 20 hours extra on the road. “I try to use my NavMax every day to try to get an edge - it will pick up if there’s any accidents and I’ll try to get another way. “But it doesn’t matter which way you go the traffic still banks up.” Ms Ford says better public transport would entice more commuters out of cars and onto trains. “I don’t think the roads have grown as fast as the developments have. “I’ve lived all over Melbourne and I’ve never encountered traffic like it. “I wouldn’t have moved out here if I knew it was that bad.” Name your dud road at https://starcommunity.com.au/competitions/14-08-2018/ ublock-gridlock-reader-poll/

Mulgrave intersection vow By Cam Lucadou-Wells A third grade-separated intersection on Springvale Road has been pledged by the Liberal Party ahead of the State Election. The intersection at Springvale and Wellington roads, Mulgrave will be removed by constructing an underpass, with slip turning lanes. It was one of 55 intersections identified by the Liberal-Nationals Coalition as the "most dangerous and congested" in Melbourne and Geelong. According to the Liberals, traffic has increased through the intersection by 1953 vehicles on a weekday and 2322 on a weekend day since 2015. The Coalition had already promised to remove the Springvale Junction of Princes Highway and Springvale, Police and Centre roads - which channels about 132,000 vehicles a day as of last November. The Springvale and Ferntree Gully roads intersection in Glen Waverley has also been targeted for grade-separation.

Opposition leader Matthew Guy said the project would mean "commuters spend less time with their families and loved ones. "Labor has been ignoring Mulgrave for too long and now local streets are becoming car parks." Mulgrave Liberal candidate Maree Davenport said local residents and businesses told her of worsening traffic congestion impacting on their daily lives. "Removing the intersection at Springvale Road and Wellington Road will help residents get around our local area and ease the congestion crush." Roads Minister Luke Donnellan said the "so-called plans" were "completely irrelevant". "They are just talk." He pointed to the Government's removal of 50 level crossings, upgrading the Monash, building five new railway stations and a "record" $4.1 billion Suburban Road Upgrades program. Only Labor can be trusted to deliver the congestion busting road and rail projects people need to get them home sooner, and safer."

Real change in estate life By Brendan Rees For the past three decades Daryl Rayner and his business partner Tony Rachele, the directors of McLennan Real Estate, have seen the industry they love change enormously. Back in the 80s before the internet had evolved, Mr Rayner remembers and cutting and pasting together adverts for the Dandenong Journal. “Now everything is done online,” he says. “We do it all ourselves now and send it to the Journal. It’s not proof read any more because we do it all ourselves.” Today, McLennan Real Estate is proud to be celebrating a milestone of 30 years in business partnership on Monday 1 October. The McLennan name, originally registered as R. K. McLennan and Sons by the late Keith McLennan in 1936, has become a household name in the community for buying, selling or renting property. The business opened in 1936 at 244 Lonsdale Street in Dandenong - where the office remained until four years ago. Just after World War II, Mr McLennan’s son Merv took over and helped people buy and sell property until his death in the early 1990s. Mr Rayner worked with Merv as a salesman prior to Mr Rayner and Mr Rachele buying the business in 1988. The original office in Lonsdale Street became too small for the expanding company and it is now located in the prominent offices on the corner of Langhorne and Walker Streets, diagonally opposite the Drum Theatre - Town Hall. McLennan’s employs 20 highly trained staff and offers excellent customer service and professional service. “The demographic has changed in Dandenong over the past 30 years from predominantly Anglo and European and Russian

People from all over the world settle in the Dandenong areas making it one of the most multi-cultural parts of Australia,” Mr Rayner says. Mr Rayner can remember selling houses in Doveton for around $25000. “Similar houses are now in the half a million dollar mark,” he says. The main changes for the real estate business, Mr Rayner says, is the dynamic changes in technology and keeping up with them. “The next few years will see enormous changes to the way we do business. Although technology has its benefits, we are losing some of the personal relationship building aspects of the past. Everyone is so busy these days,” he said. Mr Rayner and Mr Rachele love providing

LOOKING BACK

Compiled by Dandenong and District Historical Society

100 years ago 3 October 1918 The War The president of the shire (Cr Abbott) made reference at the war lecture in the Dandenong town hall on Tuesday evening last to the splendid war news which had come to hand during the day. He stated that Bulgaria had agreed to an unconditional peace with the Allies which with the news to hand from the Western Front was practically the brightest for us since the war had started, and was on the way to victory and soon ... .he hoped ... we would have peace. Lieutenant E.W. Dixon of Dandenong obtained the DSO: for conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. During an attack the enemy in turn counter attacked on the flank of the battalion. Dixon

at once grasped the situation, took command of more than 200 men of various units and held on to a positon of rising ground which was vital to the whole positon. Having driven off the attack he remained in command of the hill for two days, and the retention of this vital point was almost entirely due to his personal example and courage.

50 years ago 1 October 1968 Timber is a vital industry The timber industry is a large and vital segment of the Australian economy. Apart from any other consideration, its positon as a supplier of the largest proportion of materials required by our top priority housing expansion programs gives it prime importance. It is also one of our largest employment industries, a valuable customer for many other Australian industries from which

it buys machinery equipment, material and an industry with a large and increasing capital investment. This industry in Australia is based on both local and imported timber.

20 years ago 5 October 1998 All Shaken Up Windows rattled, cookery rocked and houses shook as some Melbournians breakfasted on Monday. An earthquake measuring 3.8 on the Richter scale rumbled across the suburbs from an epicentre about six kilometres north east of Portsea as the quake moved 14 kilometres below the earth's surface. Reports were received from people living in the Mornington Peninsula and extending as far as Cockatoo in the Dandenong's. Experts at the Seismology Research Centre said the quake was normal for Australia

however it was a little larger than had been experienced in the past couple of years.

5 years ago 30 September 2013 Students turn the tables Students turned teaches at Silverton Primary School this month. The Noble Park School was among hundreds across Australia taking part in Kids Teaching Kids Week 9-13 September. It hosted eight schools including Dandenong North Primary School, St Elizabeth's Woorana Park and Rosewood Downs, Dandenong Primary School, Dandenong High School, and Carawatha College in Noble Park North. They used workshops in propagating plants, making badges, designing a message to go on templates for storm water drains. Also activities making nesting boxes and more to share in the information.

Tall hopes for Palm Plaza By Cam Lucadou-Wells

WHAT’S IN A

NAME it as part of the "resurgence of Dandenong". Then-mayor Ian McDonald wrote in The Journal on the eve of Palm Plaza's opening: "Dandenong's future is looking very bright and exciting". It enhanced what was the largest metropolitan retail and commercial area outside of Melbourne CBD, Cr McDonald wrote. "Council realises that the (CBD) of the city is under increasing pressure from free standing shopping centres in close proximity to it and it therefore provide a different type of shopping experience in order to assist this continued prosperity." 12388226-CG22-18

Gazing at the double-rows of tall trees lining Palm Plaza, there's no great secret where the name came from. However, it's interesting to recall the great fanfare when the mall off McLeod Street in central Dandenong mall opened in April 1991. Palm Plaza - with its transplanted mature palm trees - was seen as a beacon of hope by retailers hoping to re-entice shoppers to the area. The $4.3 million development was envisaged as a pedestrian precinct between Dandenong Market, The Hub arcade and what was then Myer. It was a city first at the time - a mall for shoppers to relax and stroll in a quiet landscaped area without traffic. It was opened with a three-day festival of entertainment such as country-and-western, rock-and-roll and square dancing at The Hub, furry celebrities like Humphrey B Bear and Fat Cat ... and three days of Scrabble competitions on a giant Scrabble board. At the time, David Phillips, of the Dandenong Chamber of Commerce and Industry, declared

The City of Dandenong was also embarking on beautification works in Lonsdale Street, and examining improving safety and amenity in Foster Street, Thomas Street and "problem areas" like Dandenong railway station. Cr McDonald forecast that the council wanted to have the general CBD area redeveloped. Since then of course, part of Walker Street made way for what is now Armada Dandenong Plaza shopping centre, on the fringe of Palm Plaza. And Dandenong was figuratively turned upside-down by Revitalising Central Dande-

A special lift-out in The Journal heralded the Palm Plaza's opening festival. 185817 nong works - with a radical makeover of Lonsdale Street and reconfiguration of the surrounds to Foster Street. Since its opening, the exquisite diamond paving has suffered uplifting. In much the same way, the area has experienced ups and downs - such as Myer closing its doors five years ago.

Tennis gets a welcome serve A $1 million pavilion at Endeavour Hills Tennis Club has been officially opened by Casey Council. The project at Sydney Parkinson Reserve includes a new clubhouse with a large social room, covered veranda, built-in barbecue, office, storeroom and a paved pathway to the eight tennis courts. It also provides amenities for males, females and all-abilities. The club's former 'log cabin' pavilion has been relocated to the Old Cheese Factory in Berwick. Casey mayor Geoff Ablett said the council was thrilled to deliver a modern tennis facility in Endeavour Hills. "The City of Casey is committed to providing access to a range of sport, recreation and leisure opportunities for our community," Cr Ablett said. "One way we do this is by investing in in-

BUSINESS IN FOCUS

Nation needled in a strawberry stack Although first reported to be found in strawberries sold by Woolworths in Queensland, the nation has been the ultimate target in the fruit tampering saga. And it's not just strawberries that have been affected. Isolated cases of sewing needles have also recently been found in mangos, bananas and apples. In just over one week, there were a total of 100 cases of fruit contamination. Personal injury lawyer Linda Hanley said that consumers who have suffered an injury through a defective product may sue for compensation under the Wrongs Act 1985 (Vic) or Australian Consumer Law and Fair Trading Act 2012 (Vic). "Injured consumers are able to pursue compensation under both Acts, however, if successful, they would have to elect between the two available remedies under each of the Acts," Ms Hanley said. "The type of claim our clients proceed with ultimately depends on their individual circumstances and what would be most advantageous to them. "In either type of claim, the injured consumer can recover compensation for their pain and suffering, loss of earnings, medical expenses associated with treatment and the cost of care needed by reason of the injury. Injured consumers have three years from the date of injury to bring a claim." Ms Hanley explained that both types of claims are made against the supplier of the fruit and the retailer who sold the contaminated fruit. Further, the relevant legislation requires that the injured consumer demonstrates that they have suffered an injury to a required level of severity

Adviceline Injury Lawyers are urging those that have been "a victim of fruit contamination" to contact them for expert legal advice. in order to qualify for compensation. "The highest amount of compensation that a successful claimant would be awarded for pain and suffering damages also differs between the two types of claims," she said. "Under the Wrongs Act, the current maximum amount of damages that can be awarded is just over $598,000. Under the Australian Consumer and Fair Trading Act, the maximum amount of damages that can be award-

ed is just over $334,000. "To ensure that injured consumers obtain the best outcome possible, it is imperative they seek expert advice prior to proceeding with a claim. "If you have been a victim of fruit contamination or have suffered from a similar incident, call Adviceline Injury Lawyers on (03) 9321 9988 for free information about your rights and entitlements."

Connection for children Dandenong Home Interaction Program for Parents and Youngsters (HIPPY) are launching their very own book, Peekaboo's Book of Creatures. HIPPY Dandenong parents and children worked with a trained local artist Reeham to create this colorful, imaginative interactive book for parents and children. The book explores the emotions and differences that make people unique. HIPPY Dandenong is a culturally and linguistically diverse group of parents with preschool age children. Kids' Own Publishing proposes to work with a group of parents and children from HIPPY Dandenong to write, illustrate and publish a book from their own perspective. Kids' Own Publishing's mission is to harness the power of books and the publishing process to connect children, families and their communities. Over six sessions, participants had the opportunity to explore their own voice and to tell their own story which is now published into a 20 page, full colour paperback book for all families and friends to read. The program used both digital and handson techniques to explore different ways of telling stories. The theme and storyline of the book is decided by the group. The group developed a collaborative text and all illustrations. HIPPY is a two year, home-based early childhood learning and parenting program that empowers parents and carers to be their child's first teacher. Parents and children will learn simple book making skills which can be used at home. Parents and carers build the confidence and improve skills of how to create a positive home learning environment. Children are given the opportunity to be active participants and creators of their own books and become drivers of their own literacy learning.

FACEY Industrial Commercial has been judged the leaders in marketing for the third consecutive year at the REIV Commercial and Industrial Marketing Awards. The Facey team took home two awards at Watermark in Docklands on Thursday 13 September. The successful campaigns were for the sale of a commercial property at 15 Langmore Lane in Berwick and an industrial property at 1,2 and 3/5 Berends Drive in Dandenong. Facey was also a finalist for the campaign run for 11 Levinda Drive in Carrum Downs. Director Mark Bond was thrilled with the success and paid tribute to the dedicated team.

“This year’s double win, along with wins in two previous years, cement Facey Industrial Commercial’s position as the most innovative and strategic marketers of commercial real estate in Melbourne’s great South East,” Mr Bond said. REIV president Richard Simpson said the awards are a great opportunity to recognise the increasingly innovative and tailored campaigns. “Each year, the judges are blown away with the level of consideration and attention to detail that goes into these campaigns: this year we’ve seen dedicated websites, a film series and drone photography as well as traditional print advertising, signage and brochures.” ●

Meaning of home 'Home' is a simple word with profound meaning for every person. Six artists from refugee and asylum-seeking backgrounds have reflected on the word in an upcoming Greater Dandenong exhibition Home. It features the paintings of Tadros Hanna, photographs from Zia Atahi, masks in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition by Lobsang Dhoyou, pyrography by Mirwais Janbaz, installation art works by Adelaide-based Elyas Alavi and prints and drawings from Amir Tehrani Homa. The artists were selected through an extensive submission process, and individually mentored to develop professional pathways. Greater Dandenong Mayor Youhorn Chea said the exhibition reflected the council area as Australia's most culturally diverse. "It is a vibrant and welcoming place and for many refugees and asylum seekers Greater Dandenong is the first place they call home after arriving in Australia. "For this reason Home seems like a fitting title for an exhibition which celebrates the positive influence refugees continue to have in our community and others." IKEA Springvale, as partner to the exhibition, provided $1000 to each artist. Store manager Julian Pertile said the exhibition played a "vital role in helping asylum seekers and refugees establish themselves as artists in Australia". Comedian and writer Sami Shah is the exhibition ambassador. He will attend the opening night. Home opens 6.30pm on Thursday 18 October at Walker Street Gallery and Arts Centre in Dandenong. It runs until 24 November. IKEA Springvale will host an artistic workshop including live painting on furniture, some of the Home artworks, food tastings and live cultural music. It is on 11am-2pm on Sunday, 14 October.

Riding fights kid poverty By Tanaka Nyamvura

Zia Atahi's untitled digital image artwork is part of the Home exhibition. Exhibiting artist Mirwais Janbaz with his pyrographic work.

Cyclist Leonie Hussey and 15 colleagues from Wurth Australia Dandenong are joining 10,000 bike riders in Australia's biggest bike ride United Energy's Around the Bay. This will be Leonie's second time participating in the 100km Melbourne to Frankston return ride to be held on the 7 October. Leonie will be raising money to support the one in seven young Australians currently living below the poverty line. The money raised will help young people in need with practical support for their education. These items will include books, uniforms, shoes, and access to out of school learning and mentoring programs. "Education makes such a difference in young people's lives, so we can't wait to show our support next month by riding strong for kids in need," Leonie said. Leonie says she has been impressed by how many of her colleagues have taken up the charge. "They saw us ramping up our training, heard about the great cause, and said to themselves I'll have a go, she said. In order to raise more money for the foundation Leonie and her colleagues are also selling boxes of socks. "Every dollar raised by riders will help the Smith family reach more young people in need with practical support for their education," Leonie said. Anton Leschen, the general manager from The Smith Family foundation, congratulated Leonie and her colleagues for their generous commitment. "Our nationwide Learning for Life program helps break the cycle of disadvantage for tens of thousands of children in need , and the more money riders raise, the more we can help", he said.

SPORT

A fierce season to come Summer's favourite sport of cricket will return to the local area on Saturday, with the Dandenong District Cricket Association set to kickoff. With the competition re-structure, the Turf 1 grade is set to be fierce, and the quality will rise to yet another level. Can Mordialloc claim a three peat? Or will another challenger emerge? NICK CREELY takes a look at how each side could fare. BERWICK Coach: Will Carr Captain: Matthew Chasemore Last Season: 5th Most Runs: Nathan Pilon (404 runs at 36.73) Most Wickets: James Wilcock (34 wickets at 12.18) Ins: Brendan Rose (Casey-South Melbourne) Outs: James Wilcock (Dandenong), Jarrod Armitage (Springvale South) Home Base: Arch Brown Reserve, Berwick Turf 1 premierships: 6 Most recent premiership: 2011/12 First Match: vs North Dandenong, Arch Brown Reserve, 6 October. How far can they go? Berwick's list is undoubtedly glittered with talent, and they possess some of the finest local cricket names such as Nathan Pilon, Jarrod Goodes and Matt Chasemore. But their gap between their best and worst has been an issue for the last couple of years, and need an overall improvement across the board to climb back into finals. The addition of former Casey-South Melbourne club champion Brendan Rose certainly helps, but the losses of James Wilcock and Jarrod Armitage see them lose two of their top four wicket takers from last year. The one thing that the Bears do have in spades is depth, and they will also back in some of their youth and emerging senior players to take the next step. Finals is within reach, but can they play more consistently as a team? BUCKLEY RIDGES Coach: David White Captain: David White Last Season: 3rd Most Runs: Daniel Watson (746 runs at 62.17) Most Wickets: Jurgen Andersen (29 wickets at 16.9) Ins: David White (South Africa), Chanaka Silva (Moonee Valley), Gayantha Wijethilake (North Dandenong), Yahas Alwis (overseas), Rob Peat Outs: Lukas Hoogenboom Home Base: Park Oval, Dandenong Turf 1 premierships: 2 Most recent premiership: 2012/13 First Match: vs St Mary's, Park Oval, 6 October. How far can they go? A shock preliminary final loss could take nothing away from what was a brilliant Turf 1 season for the club, who continue to set the standard in the DDCA. However, with the list they have, and some of the additions to the Bucks, they are in the premiership window and must capitalise on their home and away dominance from the previous two years with nothing less than a grand final appearance. South African A player David White is a massive in and he'll frighten some of the seasoned Turf 1 bowlers, while Chanaka Silva and Gayantha Wijethilake are stars and should slot in brilliantly in the side. Spots will be hard to get, which is a perfect problem to have for a club that is certainly primed to go one better on last year. HALLAM KALORA PARK Coach: Panel including Steve Gilmour, Ben Hillard, Craig Hillard and Ciaron Connelly Captain: Ciaron Connelly Last Season: 4th Most Runs: Leigh Booth (565 runs at 51.36) Most Wickets: Jordan Hammond (24 wickets at 12.46) Ins: Peter Sofra (Casey-South Melbourne), Jaime Brohier (Frankston-Peninsula) Outs: Thalaivan Sargunam (overseas) Home Base: Hallam Reserve, Hallam. Turf 1 premierships: 2 Most recent premiership: 2001/02 First Match: vs Heinz Southern Districts, Reedy Reserve, 6 October. How far can they go? 28 STAR JOURNAL

DANDENONG DISTRICT CRICKET ASSOCIATION

TURF 1 SEASON PREVIEW

Springvale South and Mordialloc will once again be the teams to beat this season. 178833 Picture: ROB CAREW The Hawks have been one of the most consistent Turf 1 sides for the past two years, but have been unable to take that next step when it comes to finals. Their list, however, is shaping up nicely and they'll be confident they can make a deep run into finals. The addition of seamer Peter Sofra will help add to an impressive bowling group, while Jaime Brohier is a run machine who has had a successful stint with Frankston Peninsula after making piles of runs for Lyndale. The improvement of their core list, and ability to retain their stars should see them as one of the teams to watch this season. They also welcome a new Turf 1 skipper, with Ciaron Connelly set to take on the big job. HEINZ SOUTHERN DISTRICTS Coach: Rob Davies Captain: Trevor Davies Last Season: 8th Most Runs: Michael Davies (468 runs at 42.55) Most Wickets: Michael Davies (35 wickets at 10.23) Ins: Cameron Dinger (Casey-South Melbourne), Suraj Randhiv (Sri Lanka), Justin Davis (returning) Outs: Matthew Cox (Ashburton), Brad Downe (retired), Ricky Johnson (Doveton), Zahoor Sarwari (Endeavour Hills) Home Base: Reedy Reserve, Hampton Park. Turf 1 premierships: 0 First Match: vs Hallam, Reedy Reserve, 6 October. How far can they go? Some key ins, but some equally key outs, the Cobras will enter the season as one of the genuine unknowns. One thing is almost certain, their bowling attack stacks up with any Turf 1 side, with Cameron Dinger and former Sri Lankan test player Suraj Randhiv giving the side the best spin combination in the competition. Adding to the usual suspects in Michael Davies and Kaushyla Weeraratne with the new ball, and they look formidable. But can they score enough runs as a batting group? The losses of former skipper Matthew Cox and veteran opener Brad Downe leave the side a bit vulnerable. Only played in a grand final two years ago, but may be battling to be in the race for finals. MORDIALLOC Coach: Adrian Jones Captain: Dylan Campbell Last Season: Premiers

Monday, 1 October, 2018

Most Runs: Ian Daniel (772 runs at 55.14) Most Wickets: Ian Daniel (30 wickets at 15.50) Ins: Nuwan Kulasekera (Sri Lanka) Outs: Stuart Squires, Jakob Woinarski (St Kilda), Chathura Athukorala (Tasmania) Home Base: Ben Kavanagh Reserve, Mordialloc Turf 1 premierships: 3 Most recent premierships: 2017/18 First Match: vs Springvale South, Alex Nelson Reserve, 6 October How far can they go? The reigning premiers are once again looming as a threat to claim their third consecutive Turf 1 premiership, in what would be one of the most extraordinary runs local cricket has seen in recent memory. Brilliantly coached by the highly regarded Adrian Jones, the Bloodhounds are well drilled, and each member plays their role. Young quick Dylan Campbell will take the reins as skipper, replacing club legend Stuart Squires who is taking some time off after being at the forefront of a golden era, while other bowlers in Jakob Woinarski and Chathura Athukorala won't be at the club this season. It won't matter, however, with Nuwan Kulasekera - who has taken 199 ODI wickets and 48 test wickets with Sri Lanka - signing on for the club. Adding to the star power of Ian Daniel and Damith Mapa Ralage, the Bloodhounds are primed to once again be in the top echelon of sides. NORTH DANDENONG Coach: Shane Lamour/David Bell Captain: Asfan Thajudeen Last Season: 7th Most Runs: Asfan Thajudeen (278 runs at 21.38) Most Wickets: Gayantha Wijethilaka (26 wickets at 19.19) Ins: Akshay Ballal (overseas), Charan Chahal (overseas), Dineth Silva (overseas), Matin Sultani (Dandenong West) Outs: Michael De Kauwe (Silverton), Nasrat Malikzada (Springvale), Clayton McCartney (McKinnon), Gayantha Wijethliaka (Buckley Ridges) Home Base: Lois Twohig Reserve, Dandenong North Turf 1 premierships: 2 Most recent premiership: 1997/98 First Match: vs Berwick, Arch Brown Reserve, 6 October.

How far can they go? The Maroons have lost some key players ahead of the season, with Asfan Thajudeen taking over the captaincy in what looks to be a new look side. Last year's leading bowler, Gayantha Wijethilaka, departs, and that should have an impact on their strike power with the new ball. But some strong overseas additions, such as Dineth Silva and Charan Chahal, should ensure they remain competitive, and they will be hoping that some youngsters can take their chances to shine when called upon. But they could be in the midst of a relegation battle, with the talent and improvement of sides around them almost certain to make it difficult. SPRINGVALE SOUTH Coach: Craig Slocombe Captain: Craig Slocombe Last Season: Runners-up Most Runs: Steven Spoljaric (457 runs at 45.70) Most Wickets: Malinga Bandara (37 wickets at 14) Ins: Jarrod Armitage (Berwick), Matt Wetering (Dandenong) Outs: Mitch Forsyth (Dandenong) Home Base: Alex Nelson Reserve, Springvale South Turf 1 premierships: 8 Most recent premiership: 2010/11 First Match: vs Mordialloc, Alex Nelson Reserve, 6 October How far can they go? The Bloods will be snarling after falling short in their Turf 1 decider to Mordialloc last year, and will be a side with plenty of motivation to upset the stunning run of Mordi. Featuring some brilliant names such as captain-coach Craig Slocombe, multiple Wookey Medal winner Steve Spoljaric, Former international spinner Malinga Bandara, the Bloods have no shortage of star power. Jarrod Armitage returns from a stint at Berwick and will be a crucial part of the side, while former junior Matt Wetering returns after doing some excellent work at Dandenong, and will be among the best quicks in the competition almost immediately. The depth is also an impressive aspect of the club, and plenty of kids and seniors will be pushing their case at Turf 1 level. They know what it takes to win premierships, and with Slocombe leading the charge, the Bloods will take some beating. ST MARY'S Coach: Kaushalya Gajasinghe Captain: Kaushalya Gajasinghe Last Season: 6th Most Runs: Kaushalya Gajasinghe (372 runs at 46.5) Most Wickets: Kaushalya Gajasinghe (31 wickets at 10.23) Ins: Luke Davis, Dan Davis (both England) Outs: Shakeel Ahmad, Adam Welcome Home Base: Thomas Carroll Reserve, Dandenong Turf 1 premierships: 7 Most recent premiership: 2002/03 First Match: vs Buckley Ridges, Park Oval, 6 October. How far can they go? The Saints were only a couple of games away from a shock finals berth in their return to the DDCA's top flight last year, and will be hoping that they can find some improvement within their list after a relatively quiet off-season to push for finals or at least make it hard for other sides around them. The class of the Turf 1 looks as good as it has ever looked, so it would be an incredible achievement for the club to break through and play finals. But with Kaushalya Gajasinghe still around and in the prime of his career, the Saints will internally be confident that they can be one of the surprise packets of the season despite a couple of losses in Shakeel Ahmad and Adam Welcome, who were both influential last season. Regardless of whether the club plays finals this year, the Saints are a proud club and will leave nothing in the tank. dandenong.starcommunity.com.au

the common goal of defending their crown. Dandenong skipper Tom Donnell will once again lead a group well and truly in their prime, and said that the feeling around Shepley Oval isn't any different after breaking through for the premiership last season. "It's pretty same same - there's probably less pressure because the guys have got a bit of success, but the feeling around the club is pretty similar, we're a pretty casual and upbeat group," he said. The Panthers have welcomed back seamer James Wilcock to the club after a stint at DDCA club Berwick, while Jak Jowett is the only noticeable loss from a first XI group that will stick together and look to build for another tilt at a flag. Donnell said the biggest positive for a stable off-season with little player movement was the chance to improve the overall depth and quality of a list that's been building for a few years. But as a result, will give the selectors plenty of headaches in picking the sides on Thursday. "We're trying to develop our own guys - our twos were really strong last year, and even our thirds, so it's a good chance for the club to promote their own, which leaves the whole club in good stead," he said. "If a batsman gets injured or a bowler does, we know we've got a replacement that can come in and do the job. "It is very hard and challenging (for selection), because there is so many guys around the mark, so there will be a lot of really unlucky guys come round one. It's a very long season, so they'll get plenty of chances to prove themselves and get to where they want to be.

"And the core group is still there from last year, and hopefully we'll see a bit of James Pattinson early on in the year, maybe as a batsman and maybe to bowl a bit, so we'll see on that one, but it'd give us a boost." While Donnell expects the usual suspects in veterans Brett Forsyth, Darren Pattinson and James Nanopoulos to be at the top of their game, he said that some of the club's most promising youngsters will get their chances to shine. "Dane Heverin did well on the weekend and will look to push through, he's a good bat. Another young opener in Andre Fernando will get a good chance in the seconds to do well, so guys like that - they'll have experience in Pete and Mick Sweeney around them pushing for first selection too," he said. "There is a couple of good leggies coming through - we've got some great youngsters, so there's some positives signs from those grades to do well this year and push for selection." The champion skipper compiled 752 runs last season, and said that as the leader of the batting group, they'll look to ensure they can emulate their stunning consistency, and once again pile on big scores. "One thing we did extremely well last year was spreading the load - we're looking to do that again this year, our batting's as deep as its been in my time at the club I believe, and it shows great signs," he said. "Ed Newman's playing well, LJ (Edwards) is an extremely good player, Nano (James Nanopoulos) as the all-rounder, and blokes like Cam Forsyth, Comrey Edgeworth and Josh Slater will get their chances. "If one person doesn't do the job, our main

And as they prepare to take on a fired up Ringwood - who will be looking to start the season off brightly after a disappointing 2017/18 - Donnell said nothing will change from his perspective, they'll play Dandenong cricket, and only be worried about things within their control. "Winning a couple of premierships, we know sides will come after us a lot more - we'll think about our own plans and how we play," he said. GROW BUSINESS … Casey Cardinia Region

Lean on clean for support Through her business Paleo to Go, Berwick’s Aarti Royan is striving to make clean, nutritious process-free whole foods easily accessible. Her mission comes following her past life as an ‘overweight, terribly lethargic desk junkie’ who climbed stairs like she was ‘climbing Everest.’ But that was years ago now. Today, Aarti ‘can’t even relate’ to the highly stressed and borderline majorly depressed person she once was. And she says it’s all thanks to her quest to live a ‘clean lifestyle.’ It started almost ten years ago when a colleague introduced her to the Whole30 program. Put simply, the Whole30 program is designed to change the way participants eat, think and feel in 30 days. Partakers cook their own meals where all inflammatory foods and beverages are removed. They eat three clean meals a day which are made with Whole30 approved ingredients (meats, seafood, veggies, and eggs). Admitting she had tried every diet under the sun, Aarti warmed to the program and confessed it improved her mental wellbeing substantially. She could ‘find no traces of her depression’ and even signed up to do the 100 kilometre Oxfam marathon. She finished the program having lost the final desired kilos and had gained a new mindset. But where to now? “Not long after (I finished the program) we went to Cape Bridgewater for a holiday and I was thinking ‘wow, it’s a six-hour drive.’ Usually, you would stop at McDonald’s and I was saying to my husband, this is really frustrating because I can’t get something to eat if I don’t pack anything. I have to be so organised,” Aarti said. “So that’s when I decided that I was going to start something. I had this vision that you’ve got to have clean food wherever you go, even if it’s just a little tub of something that’s process, grain and dairy free - something that people like me can eat no matter where they are. We have so many kiosks for unhealthy foods, why can’t there be something for clean food?” For Aarti, Paleo to Go was ‘the logical progression from the Whole30 Program’ and she now has three heavily researched, ready-to-go paleo products available to be purchased via her website. Her ‘Cleanola’ (a ‘clean’ take on granola) has been a standout, while her Mocha Hemp Balls and Turmeric Latte Blend have also proved to be crowd favourites. “The long-term vision is that I really want to have a lot of products but I’m really in the (developing stage) at moment,” Aarti said. “I’m doing a lot of research and I’m trying to get the products out there. But because it’s all process free, it’s very logistically difficult because I’m not adding a lot to the product so they have a shorter shelf life.” Adding to Aarti’s workload is her full-time job, training to become Australia’s first certified Whole30 coach and the upcoming release of her book, Paleo, The Indian Way. “The book is launching very soon - I’m so excited,” Aarti said. “I’ve got 50 paleo Indian recipes within the book but it’s not just about being paleo - (the recipes) are also all Whole30 compliant. “And they’re very doable - they’re not based on ingredients that aren’t in your pantry. I’m big on the idea that (diets) have to be sustainable and on a budget. And it’s Indian because a lot of the paleo eaters obviously want some variety in their food.” And while it may seem like she has a lot on her plate, Aarti admits it’s all a part of her masterplan to spread the clean eating message. “The ultimate vision with all of this is that the book and Paleo to Go is an offshoot of my Whole30 coaching,” “I want to take this Whole30 coaching to corporates and I want organizations and leaders to get into 30 days of committed, clean eating because it drives efficiency, productivity and clarity. And I think once people at that level do it, it cascades down into organizations.”

Paleo to Go Founder Aarti Royan is striving to spread the clean eating message. 182774
