Have you been swooped yet? If you've been the victim of a magpie attack you'll know what I mean. I've been hit a couple of times while cycling and the force of their impact is quite surprising. They seem to appear from nowhere and it's just that flapping of wings right before they hit that gives you any warning of what's about to occur. Luckily I've been wearing a helmet on each occasion and managed to escape unscathed.

WHAT WE'RE TALKING ABOUT ...
JOYFUL WALK IN RAIN AND SHINE BY MARGARET MACCOLL Walking through the forest in a thunderstorm was hailed by Great Noosa Trail walkers as one of the highlights of this year's events. As they relaxed at the Pomona Hotel on Monday at the end of their three-day traverse between the country towns of Cooroy, Kin Kin, Cooran and Pomona they reminisced on the experience. "It was a joy being in a forest during the thunderstorm. It heightened your senses. The trees became really alive. You could hear it coming closer and closer - thunder and lightning - very exciting," they said. Some walked the trail for fitness, some to be closer to nature and others to just appreciate the experience and enjoy the camaraderie. Almost 100 people signed on at the Cooroy Butter Factory Saturday morning for the annual walk which passes along dedicated trails through farmlands, natural forests and spectacular lookouts from the hinterland to the ocean. This year marked a changing of the guard as walk coordinator Shaun Walsh retires from the role, handing over the reins to Libby Hoskin and Jim Ennis of the Cooroy Future Group. Shaun believes the success of the trail walk lies in its relaxed attitude, the authenticity of the experience, the diversity of the country and the volunteers. "It's not just national park. It's the natural and cultural landscapes of Noosa," he said.
A walk with friends.
Sunshine Coasters Elise Hicks, Carol Vona, Marie Farrelly and Jane Sinclair came to enjoy what we have on the coast.
Trail walkers traverse through local farmland.
The trails had their beginnings in the early 1990s when Shaun was working as an urban planner for Noosa Council and the Sunshine Coast Tracks and Trails Association started using old road reserves for horse riding. "They put up arrows and introduced the tracks and trails," he said. When local subdivisions were planned trails were marked. Council obtained funding to create a network of eight trails which have now been in existence for about 20 years and are maintained by Council. Shaun began walking the trails regularly from his home in CooranWhen the Great Noosa Trail Walk began such was the
interest the event sold out in two days. "These trails between villages are very rare in Australia," Shaun said. "It's really hit a cord. "It's well organised but not that organised," he said. The community has embraced it and dwell time in the villages is an important part of the walk for both visitors and local businesses. Both Jim and Libby have done the walk previously and enjoyed the ethos and camaraderie. With a background in events management and with the help of volunteers from the Cooroy Futures Group they plan "to bring it to another level". â—?
Walk coordinator Shaun Walsh.
Eumundi Rotary hosted a pop up stop for walkers.
Phil Moran leads the tree planting on the trail.
COMMUNITY GROUPS GIVE TRAIL WALKERS AID TO SHADE Noosa trail walkers should enjoy more shade in the future after the planting of shade trees by Noosa and District Landcare on Saturday and more planned in the future."The aim is to do a lot of the network with a tree lined avenue," Landcare president Phil Moran said as he dug in six native figs beside a trail rest stop. "Figs are already endemic in the area. They love this soil. They have a good spreading and they're good for wildlife." Shaun Walsh has been the driving force in the project and secured some funding to plant a number of mature trees. Phil said a team of workers from a state government program called Skilling
Workers for Queensland which provides training for people aged from 17 to 54 years had brush cut the area in readiness for the tree planting. "The trail is quite large and hard to maintain," he said. "Some of the sites are steep, some don't have shade and there might be a need for water points. Several community groups are involved in supporting the Great Noosa Trail Walk including Eumundi Rotary which has operated a pop-up teahouse for the past two years. This year Sue Godwin made the cakes while other members donated other tasty treats. â—?

COVER STORY Vivienne Golding.
PAID TO WORK IN PARADISE BY RON LANE t was in the year 1994 that Vivienne Golding a retired Australian slalom white water kayak champion was hit by a truck and her life hung in the balance. However despite massive injuries by 2017 this lady with sheer determination and the heart of a lion had fought back and not only entered the World Masters Championships in New Zealand, but in contesting her favorite water events came home with not one but two gold medals.
I
The World Masters had been indeed a huge event with 27,000 participants arriving in Auckland to contest 28 sports; the largest multi- sport in the world. "I went to Auckland to do my best and also to catch up with my old team mates and friends. To top it off with not one but two gold medals was just incredible," she said. For Vivienne her medals came about when she won the over 50s C1 single canoe slalom and C1 team events. "It was tough going. Competing over a 400m 3-4 grade course was a real challenge," she said.
Despite not having competed since 2009, her work as the owner/guide of Noosa Everglades Kayak Adventures has Vivienne paddling kayaks every day as an instructor and guide. Despite paddling in calm waters as against the toughness of the slaloms course, it helped her maintain a high level of fitness. Now in 2018 Vivienne continues to live the perfect dream. In partnership with her friend of many years Kym McGregor, she works in what the Lonely Planet publishers describes as "one of the most pristine
wetlands in the world -the Everglades of Noosa". In 1963 Vivienne was born in the Queensland country town of Maryborough. However by the age of 18 months her parents moved to Brisbane where her father studied engineering and obtained his degree. With a desire to gain experience he shifted the family first to Mt Morgan then Marine and finally on to Townsville where Vivienne was to complete her education at Townsville Grammar going through to year 12.

Vivienne Golding water exercises in an Olympic Pool; it was during this time that I discovered reflexology. And this was to be a big help." It was in 2001 that Vivienne met Kym and a friendship started. "After some time we decided to travel and have a look around and during the next nine months we started to formulate some business ideas; and having visited Boreen Point I was keen to look at this as a business possibility. Our travels took us to Broome and while there Kym phoned Boreen Point and was told there was a house available. We had it put on hold, headed back, lived in a tent for a short time then moved into the house." Then in 2003 Kanu Kapers was formed.
For Vivienne with her background and attitude to team work and outdoor life, Kym was indeed the perfect business partner. With Kym's education in social work and self-development plus Vivienne background, this gave them the chance to combine both careers into a solid foundation. This they did and from that day on Kanu Kapers situated in the Noosa Everglades (one of just two everglades in the world) became a major tourist attraction; and in particular to tourists from overseas. "There is one question that I get asked a lot by tourists," said Vivienne. "What is Slalom Racing? Well canoe slalom
racing started in Europe in the late 1940s. Previously known as whitewater slalom it is a sport with the aim to navigate a decked canoe or kayak through a course (400m) of hanging down stream or upstream gates on river rapids in the fastest time." Prior to the launch of Kanu Kapers, Vivienne had since 1995 been selfemployed, so when in 2010 the opportunity to enroll in the University of Sunshine Coast and obtain her MBA (Master of Business Administration) arose she grabbed it. Then following this her beautiful little daughter Caroline came into her life. "For me 2010 was definitely a year to remember." Her enrollment at the USC was to expand her knowledge and understanding of business strategy, marketing management and leadership. Also during her studies she travelled to Germany where she visited major factories, European Central Bank and a prestigious business school. Then in 2012 she graduated with her degree in business. Her future in the world of business was now consolidated. Vivienne Golding has indeed lived life to the fullest. To fight back from a near death situation, then win gold at the World Masters Games was indeed a remarkable achievement. But to do so while at the same time consolidating a business venture and raising a beautiful young daughter, speaks volumes for the determination and character of this lady. Proud to say-- she is one of Our People â—?

"The years in Townsville Grammar had been good," she said. "I made a lot of new friends and also obtained work at Woolworths. This gave me the opportunity to start earning some money and also in 1978 while in year 10, I began white water canoe and kayaking. This we did on Wednesday afternoon and apart from learning to paddle on the Hubert and Tully Rivers we also learned how to build kayaks and canoes. "Some of the people we met were members of the Townsville Canoe club and had represented Australia at the World Titles; they were only too happy to help and their advice gave us a good start for what was to follow." On leaving high school she started working for Public Works. "Because some of us were earning money this gave us the chance to be independent of our parents, move around and visit such places as Atherton Tablelands and Barren River," she said. Her first steps into white water and kayak competition were under way It was about this time that Vivienne met a man named John Allaway and it was John who first introduced her to that very important virtue of training programs. Then in 1980 things started to happen when, as a 16-yr-old she attended her first Australian titles for kayaks held at Barren George Cairns, winning a silver medal in a women's team event. This plus her performance throughout the remainder of the year saw her, in 1981, selected in the Australian team for New Zealand. Future representation followed and two years on Vivienne was selected in the senior Australian team to contest the first World Titles in Italy. "This was in May 83 and for a 19-yr-old country girl, all self-funded, it was a pretty tough gig, travelling around and competing for four months. It certainly was a great experience." On returning home Viviennie moved to Tasmania and in partnership with a local, set up a training center; then finally in 1989 she returned to North Queensland with her mind set on instructing in kayaks and working as a guide for kayak tours. Then while riding a push bike in Townsville in 1994 she was hit by a truck. This resulted in her pelvis being broken in eight places. What was to follow was 10 weeks in hospital then years of physiotherapy. "These injuries would have killed a lot of other people but it was my fitness that kept me alive." she said. "When I came out of hospital I was a walking skeleton. For rehabilitation I planned on lots of walks plus

COUNCILLOR TRADES TREES FOR SURVEY Noosa Councillor Brian Stockwell says he’s not necessarily campaigning but is re-enacting a 1988 campaign by surveying hinterland residents to identify and compare what they see as the challenges facing the local area now and then. As he did back then, he is also offering free trees to those involved. “I am asking the same questions as were answered 30 years ago,” he said. “It will be interesting to see if the expectations of people living in the hinterland have changed.” He said at that time the Noosa Hinterland was one of the fasting growing areas in Australia, which resulted in 41 per cent of respondents considering ‘adopting a plan of sensible balanced development’ to be the greatest challenge facing the local area around Cooroy. At the time Cr Stockwell owned and operated a wholesale nursery and propagated 1000 native plants to give to participating residents. The results of the 1988 survey were encapsulated by then local cartoonist Kees Pel in a poster entitled “Concept 2000”(pictured). This long-term plan envisioned things that have long since come to pass, such as the tracks and trails network, a highway bypass of Cooroy; and at a time when fax machines were the latest technology and not even local schools had computers - a ‘satellite relay station’ on Black Mountain. However, other 1988 proposals are just as topical today, such as a community bus servicing
Brian Stockwell and cartoonist Kees Pel in 1988. the hinterland and a demonstration solar and wind farm. Cr Stockwell said he would collate the results of his survey and share the
information with his council colleagues. You can meet up with Cr Stockwell at the Kin Kin Markets 7 October, after the Pink Precinct Fun trail in Cooroy on 20 October,
and Pomona Markets 27 October. You can also complete the survey online at his facebook page https://www.facebook.com/ Noosacoastandcountry. ●

CALEB TAKES ON IRONMAN CHALLENGE
To put the upcoming KONA race in perspective, it entails a 3.8km swim, 180km bike ride and a 42.2km run (the run alone is the length of a full marathon!) Caleb automatically qualified for KONA after winning the Port Macquarie Ironman (one of the three key Australian Ironman events) earlier this year. He has also recently teamed up with Noosa-based professional Ironman Pete Jacobs (who won KONA in 2012) as a training partner and mentor. Caleb says The Imperial Hotel Eumundi's sponsorship will help make his Hawaiian KONA dream a reality. ●

In downtown Eumundi, 22 year old Caleb Noble is the friendly landscape gardener tending to the gardens in the grounds of the Imperial Hotel Eumundi but soon he will be taking on a world challenge. Imperial Hotel manager Paul Thomas announced this week that the hotel was thrilled to be sponsoring Caleb - not for his handy pruning work (he is good at that though!) but for his endeavours away from things horticultural. Caleb also just happens to be a superhuman Ironman. He is the current Australian champion - ranked in the top three in the world in his group (the 18 - 24 yrs category), and has qualified to compete at KONA, the IRONMAN World Championships to be held in Hawaii on 14 October. "He's so very humble about his standing as one of the top ironmen in Australia," Paul said. "And the dedication he has to training - after a full day's work tending to gardens is truly impressive". Caleb trains seven days a week, averaging 28 hours of training, and starting most days at 3.30am. "I'm averaging 25-26 kms a week swimming at Noosa Main Beach and at the Noosa Aquatic Centre; cycling about 400kms a week across the Noosa hinterland and down the Coast where there's no shortage of amazing spots; and I'm running 85 to100kms a week," Caleb said."My favourite spot to run is the Noosa National Park - such a special place.

CAR CLUB TURNS 30 WITH A SHINE BY MARGARET MACCOLL When the Noosa Beach Classic Car Club's 30th anniversary show decided their focus would be British classics they probably hadn't counted on them bringing English weather with them. A succession of showers and storms on Sunday dampened the event but with the aid of a few brollies enthusiasts kept fairly dry. Trevor Voevodin of Brisbane managed to keep under cover in his 2015 English Morgan 3-wheeler. Ian Henderson of Marcoola had to put the top up to keep out the rain on
his convertible, a 1950 Riley Roadster. The car was in a garage unregistered and deteriorating when he found it two or three years ago but the ex-engineer has been working on it slowly. "It was very bad when I bought it," he said. "I had to make it roadworthy." Ian likes working on the classic car he says being pre-computer is easy to fix to access parts through the Riley club. There were about a dozen Rileys at Sundays show and about 100 in Queensland. The British cars joined a wide range of classic vehicles on show at Lions Park,
Noosa Heads. The rain kept the usual mass of spectators away with gate takings about 70 per cent down on last year. Classic Car Show committee chairman Dave Dunwoody said it was sad news for the Noosa Car Club and the charities it supports. Some 200 rare, classic and valuable cars still made the trip to Noosa. People’s Choice award went to Trevor Jones and his 1962 MG ‘A’, Best of British was Jed Varn’s 1919 Essex and Best in Show was Ross Woodfield’s 1982 Chevrolet Corvette. ●

MONITOR AND REPLANT TO AFFECT DIEBACK "Many of the surviving mature pandanus are so damaged their fruit production is extremely low and the stress greatly reduces the reproductive capability," Joel said. "Most of the healthy plants found adjacent to beach access tracks were planted some 15 years ago, however they have not yet reached reproductive maturity." Joel's report noted pandanus leaf hopper induced dieback plus competition with invasive weeds and grass species have caused drastic changes to ecosystems and the abundance of native plant species. "The growth and spread of existing and newly emerging weed species far exceeds the amount that is currently being controlled. This is evident when you step into the untouched areas away from beach access tracks," he said. Joel's field surveys found the majority of original pandanus communities across the shire's coastal foredune areas were either decimated, reduced or compromised. "Previous sandmining, damage from fire events, high weed competition and two decades of unmitigated leaf hopper outbreaks has resulted in the loss of most naturally occurring pandanus," he said. Direct action mitigation methods of leaf stripping and natural biological control were undertaken across the shire to restore and prevent further damage. Jeol estimated losses of more than 50,000 pandanus across South East Queensland in the past six years. "Pandanus are more than just an
aesthetically pleasing coastal icon, they have a deep indigenous cultural heritage, provide incomparable habitat for wildlife and irreplaceable ecosystem services." Findings from this project will be contributed to ongoing research through online government database resources as well as a Pandanus dieback education Facebook page. Joel is hoping to gain funding to conduct bi-annual monitoring and a mass replanting exercise. The full report is available at www.noosabiosphere.org.au. ●

A project to research and protect Noosa's iconic Pandanus has prevented widespread dieback by combining science with community action. Coastal ecologist Joel Fostin received grant funding from the Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation (NBRF) to survey and treat Noosa's Pandanus population. A survey of the 4,200 Pandanus plants along the Noosa Shire coastal zone and Noosa National Park revealed low and decreasing population numbers and heavy leaf hopper insect infestations in high profile areas. Acting Mayor Frank Wilkie said pandanus in Hastings St, Noosa Main Beach and Peregian Village were especially found to be heavily affected by leaf hopper outbreaks. "Infection rates at Main Beach were found to have skyrocketed from zero trees in 2016 to 22 affected Pandanus in 2018," Cr Wilkie said. "All of which would certainly be in a critical state had it not been for Joel's intervention under this project put forward by the Peregian Beach Community Association (PBCA). "One of the great spin offs from this project has been Noosa Council funding Noosa & District Landcare to sprout hundreds of Pandanus seeds for future replanting to help restore populations." Dozens joined Joel in hands-on mitigation work with damaged plants, revegetation and regeneration work including plantings and direct seeding of over a thousand seeds. He said the resilience of the shire's pandanus population was largely due to the previous replanting efforts of local bush care groups.

NEWS SINGING A SONG OF PEACE
THE ENVIRONMENT NEEDS SOME IDEAS More than 20 community groups have had input into Noosa Council's new environment strategy which received more than 80 submissions from residents. A Council spokesman said all of the feedback would help inform a draft strategy. Issues raised included improved waste and stormwater managment to prevent pollutants entering waterways, greater protection of the environment from tourism impacts and strong vegetation management. "Strong vegetation protections, an emphasis on rehabilitating degraded natural areas and protections for additional habitat areas are among the issues the community would like to see prioritised," the spokesman said.
Also highlighted was the need to maintain the naturalness of open spaces and address longstanding management issues for the river through the Noosa River Plan. There was emphasis on developing strong partnerships with the community to reduce emissions, through business and household actions including increasing the take up of solar power. The finished strategy will guide priorities and future direction for managing and protecting the natural environment and for living sustainably in Noosa. Council hopes to present the draft strategy to the community for comment in early 2019. ●
The Palmwoods Singers, on 21 September, joined in the global peace initiative, One Day One Choir, to sing for peace. One Day One Choir is an inspiring global peace initiative that uses the harmonious power of singing together to unite people around the world on Peace Day. The event was a precursor to the singers involvement later in the year in the Palmwoods 100th Remembrance Ceremony on 11 November. Musical Director, Marjorie Murray said
with funding from a state government grant, the Palmwoods Information and Heritage Centre under the auspices of The Memorial Hall plan to stage a Welcome Home Parade. This will involve local school children carrying hand-crafted ceramic poppies bearing the names appearing on the WWI and WWII honour boards. Following a Remembrance Service, a commissioned stained glass window depicting Flanders Fields will be unveiled to take pride of place overlooking the Palmwoods Heritage Precinct. ●

GENTLEMEN JOIN THE RIDE FOR HEALTH BY MARGARET MACCOLL When Francis McLoughlan donned his suit to ride his classic Fatboy in the Distinguished Gentleman's Ride on Sunday it was to raise awareness of men's health issues and raise money for the cause. Francis who runs The Health Retreat at Kiel Mountain said by each participant talking to their friends about the need for men to seek help for mental health issues and prostate cancer the ride was spreading the message to hundreds of people. "It's about getting men if they have a mental health issue to get help," he said. "It's about men who are self-medicating with drugs and alcohol to get detox. "The quality of their life and the lives of their family depend on it." Francis suffered post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) following a fatal accident. "Someone was chopped in half and died in my arms," he said. He "found a way back" through a combination of medical and natural health treatment. Ferre De-Deyne has sponsored the ride since its inaugural event. "I'm an enthusiast and I'm involved because it's a good cause," he said. NEWS HOLD ON TOILET BLOCK AS RAIN HITS WILLING WORKERS BY MARGARET MACCOLL Every year a group of Lendlease staff from across the Sunshine Coast take a day off work and spend it helping someone in the community. Organiser Karina Brice said much planning, coordinating and tens of thousands of dollars in donations were invested in their annual Community Day. Last month a group of about 30 Lendlease employees descended on Sunshine Butterflies disability service with plans to complete construction of their toilet and shower block. "We came across Sunshine Butterflies and thought we'd give them a hand," Karina said. Sunshine Butterflies had begun work on their ablution block with a state government grant of $35,000 but the project had run out of funds and came to a standstill. Sunshine Butterflies founder and CEO Leanne Walsh said when Lendlease visited one day to say they would build it for them they were ecstatic. Karina said the project was one of the biggest Lendlease had undertaken and they had received donations from their suppliers and contractors. OH DEAR, WHAT CAN THE MATTER BE? I hate pouring water on an otherwise great parade but let’s consider the ramifications of the news that Tourism Noosa has appointed its chairman to the CEO’s job. I acknowledge the chairman’s experience, skills and dedication. No argument. He’s been a good chairman. But something’s not right. While the segue in roles seems to offer continuity, it may also be seen as a flaw; a recipe for keeping out fresh ideas. The truth is that new insights rarely come from long-term service. They come from fresh eyes that have had other experiences and picked up new capabilities along the way. I’m left wondering what is expected to change at Tourism Noosa that should already have been achieved under the same (former) chairman and now new CEO? The move seems to herald stagnation because the board has denied the entry of new intellect, knowledge, capability and experiences which would challenge or broaden existing thinking. All organisations benefit from a well-considered shake-up now and then, and this mostly takes the form of a change in leadership. The reforms thereby achieved, when guided by a talented new pair of hands, can improve organisational performance and outcomes. To go through a recruitment process aimed at renewal, gaining new perspectives and introducing new blood just to recycle the current chairman beggars belief. But the decision has been made, so let’s turn to a number of disquieting questions. Is it true the new incumbent will only occupy the CEO’s role for less than a year then take a sabbatical from which he is unlikely to return, thereby triggering a new search for a CEO? Is it the case that, as chairman, the new CEO sat in on the interview process of other con-

When was the chairman’s candidacy declared and did the board address what appears to be an evident breach of principles of good corporate governance? And what caused the nominations committee to suddenly move the chairman into poll position, having presumably gained inside knowledge of the other candidates and their pitches? If these are valid questions then, in my opinion, the process was flawed and gifted an unfair advantage to the then chairman. I need to declare that I’ve met and talked at length with one of the candidates shortlisted for the role. In my view, he would have brought fresh insights, creativity in marketing, outstanding digital knowledge and a huge wealth of regional, national and international experience in tourism marketing. These are all areas where new insights are
desperately needed at Tourism Noosa. Which leads to another question - has Tourism Noosa let better new talent walk away? In defence of the appointment, it has been suggested to me that a raft of necessary changes can now be implemented to benefit the organisation before a new search is initiated. But hold on! If that’s the case then, why were these initiatives not determined, applied and implemented under the self-same previous chairman and now CEO? I am left somewhat bemused and concerned. Michael Donovan, Former chairman Tourism Noosa
NAMING ROUNDABOUTS I went to Nambour to find the TAFE college - I pulled up for petrol in the main drag and asked the attendant “Where’s the TAFE
mate“ he said stay on this road and when you get to KFC turn right - go down the hill and turn left at ’Roy’s Roundabout’, right at the next roundabout and its along that road on the right“. No problems - but as I came to the named roundabout I remembered when I was a councillor on Noosa Council I put a plan up to name our roundabouts - I was shot down in flames. My plan was to help our economy and all motorists imparticular tourists by appropriately naming our roundabouts with neat “Noosa touch and feel (greenie colours)“ signs and a consistent roundabout symbol sponsored by the nearest business IE “RSL roundabout symbol“ “Madill’s roundabout symbol“ “Shell roundabout symbol“ and so on and so on. Helping the economy twofold (1) promote that business (2) have that business pay for the maintenance and up keep of that roundabout budgeted yearly and or added to their rates. If the nearest business was silly enough not to want the naming, ask an other nearby business - I know you would not have problems getting volunteers. Then when giving instructions to inquiring tourists “go right at the RSL roundabout - straight thru the Bowls Club roundabout - turn right at the Ivory Palms roundabout - straight thru the MacDonald’s, second exist on the left at the Harvey Norman roundabout - and left at the Caltex roundabout when you reach gridlock you know your at the beach. Ha! Ha! Thinking back to why I couldn’t get support from other councillors, it was because my idea was to simply and had too much commonsense. Relieving ratepayers of the burden of the cost of repairs and maintenance of our roundabouts, helping tourists to get about and promoting a business, surely must get a few pluses. Bob Jarvis, Noosa

FAMILY LIVING IN A PRIME LOCATION LOCATED in the heart of Noosa Heads, this large solid home offers a central elevated position so close to everything. Stroll to the Sunday farmer’s market, to the Noosa Junction night markets, the IGA and Coles, or any number of boutiques, doctors, delis, restaurants and funky bars. A five-minute drive will take you to any of the beaches, schools, river or industrial areas of Noosa. The Junction is undergoing a revival, and the surrounding neighbourhoods are showing strong capital growth and renewal. A sought-after estate, the Cooloola Hill neighbourhood has seen recent sales of renovated and newer properties between $1.5 and $2.5 million. Built in the ’70s and designed for a family with school-age children, it is constructed of rendered concrete block with concrete slab floor on both levels. It features a large living area, wide halls and an incredible amount of storage. For the car collector or fisherman, the ground floor has room for four cars, and a couple of trailers, and a tinny or larger boat, and more in the lock-up garage. On the lower level are a large bedroom, games room and bathroom, with separate entrance. It is the ultimate teenager retreat or guest suite that presents an opportunity for dual living if desired.
Surrounded by the tree canopy upstairs, you will be impressed with the massive, immaculate kitchen that has access to the rear garden and patio through the attached laundry. The master bedroom has walk-in robe and ensuite, with three other bedrooms and main bathroom on this level. The in-ground swimming pool, long disused since the children left home, has been decked over to provide additional alfresco options. It would not take much to restore the pool for family enjoyment should you wish. Some updating might be desirable to capitalise on a rising market but this is a very comfortable liveable home as is and a lot of house for the money. ●

1 Cambridge Court, Tewantin In one of Old Tewantin’s most coveted streets, this once grand home retains a regal air about her, & yet she is nearly dwarfed by her multi-million dollar neighbours, underscoring the opportunity presented. Her appearance may be a bit thread bare but the astute buyer will see that any expenditure on updating will be greatly rewarded. See past the old tiled loor & faded carpets & take in the voluminous crystal chandelier at the front entrance, the Bill Mackay painting on the living room wall & the ceiling height to appreciate the transformation a wellplanned makeover would achieve. There is no doubt she needs some work, but with character features throughout, great bones & a picture perfect high-value neighbourhood, this is the restoration project for which you have been looking. But it is the easy stroll of 200m that will take you to the river’s edge to put the paddle board in the water, that reiterates the power of location in real estate values.
A formal lounge sits behind a home ofice located at the front door, with adjoining dining room. The large kitchen & family room open to the covered patio & marvellous 12m lap pool. Upstairs you will ind a master suite that ills one side of the house with ensuite, oversized Juliette balcony, & dressing room. Three other bedrooms & main bathroom complete the upper level.

NEWS
A BIG OPENING FOR OPEN STUDIOS Noosa Open Studios seeks a new volunteer president and is looking toward next year's event with enthusiasm after being buoyed by favourable feedback received from hundreds of visitors to the event held in August. Comments like "fabulous", "beautiful friendly artists" and "love the sheer joy of the event - don't stop" were received about Noosa Open Studios which showcases the work and studios of many local artists to the public. Current president Sarah Therese said most visitors to the ten day event had their expectations exceeded, with all those surveyed willing to recommend Noosa Open Studios to a friend. "There is also a growing portion of tourists who are coming to Noosa just for the event, with one in four saying they are now planning their holidays around Noosa Open Studios in August each year," she said. Many visitors were interested to buy art whilst in the studios, while others enjoyed simply browsing and talking to the artists about their work. Meeting the artists themselves was a highlight for almost all visitors, allowing them to get to know the talented makers in their private studios. More than 70 artists throughout the Noosa shire participated in the event and also reported it to be a positive experience, enjoying selling their work, sharing their art techniques and receiving bookings for workshops. "Being part of Noosa Open Studios has given my claim as an artist validity, recognition and support," one artist said Sarah, who is stepping down at the end of this year after two years on the organising committee, said as a relative newcomer to Noosa the event provided her with a great opportunity to meet many new people across a diverse range, from local artists, to the media, to people working in our galleries and businesses right throughout Noosa. "The president does not have to be an artist or have experience in arts management. What we need is someone with strong organisational and communication skills, and some time to devote themselves to this worthwhile event," she said. Community art trails are growing in popularity across Australia, with increasing numbers in each state. "You only have to look at the success of Margaret River Open Studios in WA" said Sarah. "With over 130 studios taking part there this year and tens of thousands of visitors annually, it is now one of the biggest events on the WA art calendar." NOOSA’S BEST BUILDINGS ON SHOW The Peregian Beach Digital Hub is this year's newcomer to the Sunshine Coast Open House event which enables members of the public to view some of Noosa's exceptional architecture. Designed by Sparks Architects and completed this year by Hutchinson Builders the Digital Hub was designed to house multiple technology companies and individual workers in an open, modern environment suited to collaboration and co-working.The Open House event, which was launched last week with guests including Queensland noosatoday.com.au
Governor Paul de Jersey, Noosa architect John Mainwaring and Noosa Councillor Ingrid Jackson, will showcase about a dozen new and historic buildings in Noosa Shire and almost 20 in the Sunshine Coast Council area. Cr Jackson said Noosa's hinterland towns and villages originally had an inauspicious architecture but out of this developed some wonderful timber buildings. "Being built of wood, they were particularly susceptible to fire, but some fine examples of early settler architecture remain," she said.
"These include the Cooran Memorial School of Arts Hall which was the location for the first meeting of Noosa Council in 1910. "The council then spent 70 years in another beautiful timber building which is now the Noosa Museum in Pomona. "In 1980, as coastal development grew, the council moved again to its present brutalist-style building in Tewantin." Noosa is showcasing historic buildings which reflect its heritage. In Cooroy there is the butter factory (now a community run gallery) and the lower mill site with
its boiler house and kilns previously used for drying timber. In Pomona the Majestic Theatre, the fire and rescue station and the old railway station gallery will be open. Modern offerings include Cooroy Library by Brewster Hjorth Architects, Noosa Pengari Steiner School Hall by WD Architects, and houses designed by Bark Architects and Gabriel Poole. The Sunshine Coast Open House will be held on Saturday 20 October. Full details can be viewed on www.sunshinecoastopenhouse.com.au ●

NOOSA TODAY 33
LIVE CONCERT FOR THE FARMERS Tewantin Noosa Lions Club has adopted the town of Jericho to be the recipient of a Drought Fundraiser Concert it will host on Sunday 14 October in the Lions Park, Gympie Terrace, Noosaville from 11am - 3pm. The cattle producing town of less than 400 people lies about 490km west of Rockhampton and 85km east of Barcaldine and is reported to be facing some of the driest times it ever has. Jericho is one town involved in a Lions six-month campaign known as Adopt a Town, being conducted along with coastal Rotary clubs. All funds from the concert will be assigned to Jericho and a lineup of artists will be donating their time for the event. Among them are Better Together and The Crikeys. Kerri and Frank of Better Together have been in the entertainment world for over 20 years and have aspired to grand experiences in their careers. They now form a dynamic duo, performing golden oldies from the sixties and seventies. Kerri’s vibrant energy and Frank’s soothing sounds are a unique combination. As they bring back the sounds of that era they will have the audience up and
dancing, toe-tapping and singing-along. With their wide ranging repertoire Better Together can be found performing at clubs, hotels, festivals, private parties
and any occasion requiring good music and enjoyable entertainment.Adam O’Keefe and Haleigh Hing have recently united as an acoustic duo called The
Crikeys and are playing and singing their originals and covers that everyone knows and loves, both young and old. This duo sound absolutely amazing together and already have a large following. Adam is a very creative skilled guitarist, with several years’ experience, performing in many venues throughout New South Wales and now lives on the Sunshine Coast. Haleigh is a very talented singer/ songwriter, who is well established in the music industry and has a unique, distinct tone to his voice. The sonic landscape of their music is both unique and entertaining. All donations will be given wholly and solely to the people of Jericho who are crying out for necessities that the rest of us take for granted on a daily basis. We love our sunburned country, but our farming communities are fighting the most severe drought known. Every passing week without needed rains, brings another hurdle for them to jump. You can help during this tough time by donating to this cause and lift the morale of these struggling farming families who are in dire straits. ●

A GRAND OLD LADY OF THE COMMUNITY The Kenilworth Hotel will celebrate its 80th birthday in 2019 proudly acknowledging the charm and character it has retained and the service it has provided to the community since it was opened by Joseph Lane in 1939. The Mary Valley hotel was built in the art deco style and well maintained in its original condition with only a few changes over the years including the front verandah being covered around the turn of the century in order to better cater to locals and travellers.
Just 30 minutes drive from Noosa and on one of the Sunshine Coast's best tourist drives, Route 22, makes it an easy and popular destination. When we asked publican Steve Conway what has kept people coming back to the Kenilworth Hotel for the past eight decades we are told it simply offers all the services you would expect in a great Country pub."We have 11 accommodation rooms if you would like to stay the night as well as lock-up bike storage, so you don't have to
worry about anything. We have three dining areas, TAB, pokies, Keno and a Bottlemart bottle shop conveniently located across the road. "Check out our website or facebook to see what's happening at the Hotel. We have special events including a Classic Car Show in April and Bike Show in October and courtesy bus Friday and Saturday evenings, if you are in the area. "Our food is our business and our menu is something we take pride in. "We offer our signature Smoke Pack BBQ menu which is a mix of traditional pub food and our homemade American BBQ all
smoked on our premises from our smoker. We hand make all our rubs and sauces right here and we are smoking daily. We are very excited to announce that "Big Keg Brewery" will be launched in late 2018 which will mean we will have our own Craft beer brewed on the premises. "We have 12 beers on tap and also have a range of premium wine and spirits. "We cater for tour groups, social clubs or casual diners so make a booking on 5446 0206 or email kenilworthhotel@bigpond. com ●

In team events, USC's men's futsal squad finished third, as did the University's mixed fours beach volleyball team and its Cheer and Dance team. Just missing out on the medals, with fourth placings each, were USC's teams in the men's pairs beach volleyball and the women's futsal. WHY WE TRAVEL That's how I feel right now, and despite the increasing discomfort of long haul flights, the shorter fuse when driving on the wrong side of narrow, unfamiliar roads, and the apparent loss with age of a nearinfallible sense of direction, I hope the road goes on forever.
ANOTHER TRAGEDY IN THE RING OF FIRE No sooner had we returned to Indonesia last week than yet another natural disaster struck the archipelago, with a 7.5 magnitude earthquake near Sulawesi sending a devastating three-metre tsunami into the populous coastal cities of Palu and Donggala. At the time of writing, communications are difficult and, although it has already been confirmed at over 400, the death toll is expected to double, or even treble. Although Palu is becoming a popular tourist destination, and has a permanent population of 380,000, the nearest oceanheight monitor is 300 kilometres away, and after a reading revealed a movement of less than a few centimetres, Palu was given the tsunami all-clear. A few hours later a three-metre wall of water funnelled into the town's deep bay, decimating the coastline. It is believed a big music festival on the beach had resumed following the all-clear. It's only six weeks since our neighbouring island of Lombok was struck by a devastating series of 7-plus earthquakes that claimed many lives and basically shut down the tourism industry. Across the channel in Bali there was minimal damage, although we shared some nervous moments, running from shaking restaurants. This is what it's like, living in the Ring of Fire. You never know when the earth will move.

A tourist inside the beachfront Roa Roa Hotel captured this blurry video of the moment the tsunami hit.
RYAN'S EXCELLENT WEEKEND You could say that Newcastle tour battler Ryan Callinan had a Super Saturday last weekend. The 26-year-old talented goofyfooter, who has had a horror show couple of years - losing his dad, a well-known surfing administrator, and mum within 12 months, and slaving away on the qualifying tour with little to show for his efforts. But on Saturday in beautiful Ericeira, Portugal, the planets aligned and he got his smooth, vertical backhand attack on a roll. He rolled over world number two Gabe Medina in the semis, then kept the

Lounging by the pool, trying to recover from the jet-lag and the exhaustion of a wonderfully frantic month on the road in Europe, I was drawn back to the words of the greatest travel writer of modern times, Pico Iyer. Ross Phillips of Tropicsurf introduced me to Pico's work several years ago when he suggested we seek permission to publish his seminal essay, "Why We Travel", in the second Tropicsurf Annual. Pico was an easy get, and I was easily hooked. The essay reminded me of that golden era when great writers were given the space to describe the grand adventure of travel, not hired to gush about luxury spas between full page ads for same. From Dickens to Mark Twain, from Jack London to Hemingway, from Paul Theroux to Jan Morris, the tradition is not dead as long as there are Picos tapping the keys somewhere. I cleared my head with a few slow laps of the pool, then found Pico's essay on my laptop and sat back to read: We travel, initially, to lose ourselves; and we travel, next, to find ourselves. We travel to open our hearts and eyes and learn more about the world than our newspapers will accommodate. We travel to bring what little we can, in our ignorance and knowledge, to those parts of the globe whose riches are differently dispersed. And we travel, in essence, to become young fools again — to slow time down and get taken in, and fall in love once more. The beauty of this whole process was best described, perhaps, before people even took to frequent flying, by George Santayana in his lapidary essay, "The Philosophy of Travel." We "need sometimes," the Harvard philosopher wrote, "to escape into open solitudes, into aimlessness, into the moral holiday of running some pure hazard, in order to sharpen the edge of life, to taste hardship, and to be compelled to work desperately for a moment at no matter what." ... Romantic poets inaugurated an era of travel because they were the great apostles of open eyes. Buddhist monks are often vagabonds, in part because they believe in wakefulness. And if travel is like love, it is, in the end, mostly because it's a heightened state of awareness, in which we are mindful, receptive, undimmed by familiarity and ready to be transformed. That is why the best trips, like the best love affairs, never really end.

RAIN HELPS OUT THE RIVER ANGLERS Recent rains have led to a great improvement in the way the river fishes. Just that bit of colour from the recent runoff has seen the flathead and trevally on the chew in the lower reaches. The best baits have included prawns, pilchards, white bait and hardy heads. Live baits have also been prime baits with herring and poddy mullet getting smashed as soon as they hit the water. Lures and Soft plastics have also been outstanding with a lot of anglers having success with soft vibes. Good whiting are on the chew along Gympie Terrace and the Dog Beach flats. Fresh beach worm, pealed prawn and live yabbies are all working very well when fished on light lines and small fine worm hooks. Further upriver in the area between the lakes, mangrove Jack are responding to a range of soft vibes and suspending lures. On the crab scene: the recent fresh water will get the crabs up and walking. Mullet is still the standout bait - soak it in tuna oil to give it that added punch. Heading Offshore: larger craft have been doing the big steam out to the reefs off Double Island, the Barwon Banks and the Hards. All these reefs have produced quality snapper, jewfish, pearl perch, tusk fish, cobia and cod including a few solid red emperor from the northern reefs. Live baits fished hard on the bottom with heavy leaders of 40+lb and 7/0 octopus hooks have been working well as has Paternoster rigs in 5/0 and 7/0 sizes which let you fish multiple
big baits at different depths. Soft plastics have also been very effective at catching big snapper. Don't forget to use a good coating of scent as the fish love it! Sunshine and Halls reefs are working well with snapper, coral trout, sweetlip and big cobia getting caught on a range of baits and soft plastic lures. Fishing gang hooked pilchard floaters in a solid burley trail is still the best method to tangle with these fish. Fishing a lightly weighted soft plastic through that burley trail will also get results. In the Surf: the Noosa North Shore has been busy again with anglers enjoying tailor, bream, flathead, whiting and dart. Big baits and long surf rods have been producing some bigger tailor during low light times with gang hooked pilchard baits and fresh strip baits the better option. Fishing the close gutters with lighter gear is working well on smaller species and live beach worms, pippies and yabbies have all been prime baits on the whiting dart and bream. In the fresh: warmer weather has seen increased action on the surface. Lake Mac Donald and the Noosa Everglades have all been producing some healthy bass. Saratoga at Borumba are getting caught at first light around heavy timber with larger surface walkers the better option. Spinnerbaits, blades and plastics are great choices during the brighter times of the day. So On behalf of Jack Mangrove, best of luck on your fishing adventures! ●
