Sam bills us $31k mudslinging over the councillors.” Ratepayers Victoria vice-president Frank Sullivan said councils needed to be more accountable, with credit card spending to be monitored by the Auditor-General every three months. “It’s our money - ratepayers’ money and we’ve had massive rate increases at the moment and we’re very concerned about the accountability of the so-called rate-capping,” he said. An audit of council’s financial statements and performance statement was conducted by the Victorian Auditor-General’s audit service provider, RSM for the 2016-'17 year. Cr Aziz says he will not put his hand up for the mayoral election at the end of this year.

A Casey councillor has cost ratepayers nearly $31,000 in expenses on top of his annual $98,727 mayoral salary. Former mayor Sam Aziz’s expenses during the 2016-'17 financial year included more than $6000 in training and education, about $9000 on IT and communications, and more than $15,635 on a car and travel. The second most expensive councillor was Rosalie Crestani who claimed $8723, followed by Cr Wayne Smith ($7980). Cr Aziz defended his expense bill, saying “It was actually costing me more money to use my own car. “With my car I would be paying my own
fuel, maintenance, registration, insurance, the lease on the car - the whole lot but I would get an allowance. “It would not have cost the organisation any more had I used their car.” Cr Aziz said he paid extra $480 a month out of his “own pocket” to run his own car - which he says was not claimed. “My car did 65,000 kilometres in one year so it’s not just the running costs, but also the depreciation on the vehicle and none of that was factored in.” He said the rest of his travel expenses were related to trips to China “where we’ve actually secured two economic partnerships agreements. I make no apologies for that.” When asked about his expenses in IT, Cr

Launch for Casey writers story project
Lack of planning for local roads
Writers Victoria is launching its Casey Writers Project at Bunjil Place Library on Friday 12 October with 'The Art of Story', presented by acclaimed Australian author, Arnold Zable. "Writers Victoria recently surveyed residents of Casey about their writing needs and we have formulated a series of workshops to guide Casey writers through the development of their stories," Writers Victoria director Angela Savage said. "We're thrilled to deliver the workshops in collaboration with Bunjil Place Library." City of Casey mayor, Geoff Ablett, said council was proud to be able to support organisations to deliver arts opportunities and activities for the Casey community through the Arts Development Funding. "Council embraces arts and acknowledges the positive contribution that the arts make to creating vibrant, connected and healthy communities," he said. "We are excited to see how Writers Victoria put their funding to good use to encourage, unite and support our residents of all ages who love to write." The Casey Writers Project is a three-year series of workshops, clinics and salons. The first instalment of the project, 'The Art of Story', is a free, two-hour event, starting at 1.30pm on Friday 12 October at Bunjil Place Library. Upcoming workshops include 'Starting on the Path to Publication', on Sunday 11 November, and 'Beyond the 3 Act Structure', on Sunday 25 November. Workshops in the first year of the Casey Writing Project are free but bookings are essential. Head to the Writers Victoria website to book your place.
By Jessica Anstice Too much development and too little spending on infrastructure seems to be the main issue revolving around congestion on Clyde Road and surrounding roads. Hampton Park resident Angelo Groza and Narre Warren resident Zachary de Silva are sick and tired of the bottleneck along Clyde Road. Both are students at Federation University Berwick Campus and often find themselves caught up in traffic on their way to, and from university. "It just takes forever to move the smallest distance. They need to find a way to de-clog the road; it's absolutely atrocious," Mr Groza said. "It can be dangerous and unfair if someone is injured at either 9am or 3pm as it takes forever to get to the hospital if they need to travel along Clyde Road, it could be critical." Mr de Silva said, "Obviously the level crossing needs to be removed to start with and not just for traffic management control, it's also a safety issue. "A lot of people get hit and there are a lot of hear misses at level crossings. They need to
send the traffic either over or under; that's a logical solution. "The traffic also causes severe road rage. It's a big issue, a lot of people get frustrated and sometimes parents may take it out on their children." Mr de Silva said the traffic congestion can impact general wellbeing. "Productivity is important these days and people are wasting a lot of time stuck in traffic. It cuts out a heap of time," he said. Clyde North resident John Ramsey drives along Clyde Road to get to and from work most days. "We now have all these politicians saying they're going to fix the road but it should have been duplicated years ago before all of the housing development began," he said. "I ride my bike as well and there's no way I can ride it along Clyde Road, it's dangerous and everyone is in such a hurry.
"It seems like every second day there's an accident." Mr Ramsey shared his concerns about the O'Shea Road, Greaves Road and Clyde Road intersection, in front of Eden Rise Village. "The left turning lane from Clyde Road onto Greaves Road needs to be longer," he said. "You will get stuck behind traffic that is turning left and miss the green light if you travel in the turning lane when driving straight along Clyde Road towards Berwick. "The lights also take forever. There are nearly two sets of lights every 100 metres of each other." The bus stops along Clyde Road should also be factored in when determining the cause of the congestion, according to Mr Ramsey. "The bus stops are on the road which delays the traffic," he said. "They're fixing the road in stages but they should have done it all in one go. It's all about the politicians now."

Grand Prix Park gets tick Grand Prix Park at Frasers Property Australia's Berwick Waters community got a big thumbs up from families at a special launch event on Saturday, 6 October. Hundreds of residents, including youngsters on bikes, trikes and scooters turned out for the event, enjoying their first blast around the park's Grand Prix inspired bike track, playground and picnic facilities in perfect weather. Hungry crowds were kept well fed with food trucks and a sausage sizzle courtesy of the Berwick Scouts while children stayed entertained with a jumping castle and face painting station. Frasers Property Australia residential Victoria general manager Sarah Bloom said the day was a great success. "Creating an outdoor space that would really capture children's imagination and encourage them to get outdoors and be active was one of the aims of Grand Prix Park so it was encouraging to see so many children enjoying the track," she said. "The sunshine certainly helped make the day a real family-centred celebration." The park has been built in the community's College Green precinct and is open to Berwick Waters' residents and the wider area, with a variety of play and leisure spaces for children and adults. The track weaves through different 'experiences', from a race through the 'Black Forest' zone based on the famous Hockenheim F1 track in Germany's Rhine Valley, to a snake run zooming down the grassy hills in the northern reaches, and adrenaline-pumping dips across the start/finish line. The sprawling park also features a communal space for BBQs and picnics, grassy slopes overlooking the track, informal nature trails through existing trees and sensory plants, pedestrian paths and grassed kick-about spaces.

On 9 October the Cranbourne Star News Facebook page shared a story about City of Casey Cr Sam Aziz claiming $31,000 of ratepayers money in expenses on top of his annual $98,727 mayoral salary. Here is how some readers reacted online: Viraj Singh: Only $100 extra in rates per house. Jill Osborne: No wonder our rates are so high. Dianne Taylor: Here we go again that ex mayor should be ashamed of himself... A flagrant waste of rate payers money... He should pay it back NOW. Andrew Kozak: About the same as my expenses at work and my wage is pretty average. Hans Caspersz: Why is anyone surprised? Paul Williams: The gift that keeps on giving. Matt McMaster: "I get four or five emails per day from residents "... 4 or 5?!? How does he cope?! Jeffro Jay: Cr Sam Aziz you claim insurance, rego, fuel and a lease on a vehicle. Great steak When Cranbourne's Jason Campbell wants a really good steak he heads to Beaconsfield restaurant Georgio's Seafood and Steak House. Jason is August winner of Stars News Group's Best Restaurants and Cafes competition. Jason saw the competition advertised in his copy of the News and entered online. For his trouble he won a $100 voucher to spend at Georgio's. He said he likes the quality food and atmosphere at Georgio's. "Anything could be going on outside but you walk in there and it has a great ambiance. The staff are friendly and always smiling." Jason said he likes the generous portions and reasonable prices offered at Gorgios. He hasn't decided when he will use the voucher and even may use it as a gift to shout a
family or friend to a meal at Georgio's. Georgio’s Seafood and Steak House is a much loved Beaconsfield favourite which opened its doors ten years ago. Previous owner John Georgiou transformed what was once a video shop into the popular 100-seater restaurant. New owners Maria and Paul have over 25 years’ experience running restaurants. The pair owned a woodfire pizza restaurant in Carrum Downs for 10 years and also ran the East Malvern RSL restaurant for several years. There was a constant flow of people wandering through Narre Warren North Uniting Church's Spring Garden Plant Sale to raise money for farmers in need on Saturday. Throughout the day 150 to 200 people attended. The generosity of the visitors was one of the highlights of the day, along with many others. "When the visitors found out that the funds were going for farmer's relief many didn't want their change or they bought extra things," Bruce Crowle said. Mr Cowle said it was a spectacular effort by all concerned, from those who helped set up, the Community Garden Club members, the wonderful team of Tea Ladies, the blokes running the sausage sizzle, and the much loved op-shop volunteers, which enabled the church to raise nearly $1700. "The Uniting Church in Australia has had a long history of ministry in remote areas of our country, this particular arm of the church going under the name of Frontier Services," Mr Crowle said.
"As the current drought set in and forced many farming families into extreme hardship, it was recognised that something special needed to be done. "Narre Warren North Uniting Church has two plants sales per year, with the funds raised going to some local charity, however this time the Community Garden Club asked if the funds could go to the farmers, so it seemed natural to hook up with what Frontier Services were doing in their ministry with farmer's drought relief." The Community Garden Club has been active for over ten years. It is a community minded club and anyone interested in gardening is most welcome. Throughout the year, the garden's produce is often either donated to those in need or sold to church members on Sundays and the funds are given to charity. The group has been working on a newly consecrated sacred space in the garden for anyone in the community to come to any time of the day for some peace and quiet. The club runs Tuesday and Saturday from 9am to whenever, usually a couple of hours.

Libraries changing lives There was a beautiful gathering of library friends and family Bunjil Place Library on Thursday, 4 October to celebrate the role public libraries play in the community. Around 150 people helped celebrate the launch. Comedian and Author Alan Brough shared a heart-warming story about the positive impact public libraries had on him as a young man in New Zealand and reflected with joy on the way libraries have evolved over the last 30 years. The team at Casey Cardinia Libraries take great pride in the fact that everyone is welcome in their libraries and that their work makes a significant difference in the lives of 100s of people every day. #LibrariesChangeLives is a Call to Arms in

Students fund-raise to combat trafficking By Jessica Anstice Students at Federation University, Berwick are joining the fight against human trafficking and slavery. Two first year students, Zachary de Silva and Angelo Groza will be working with A21, an organisation that works to end human trafficking. The students will work with the A21 hosts of Walk for Freedom in Dandenong on 20 October, as well as raising $500. Zachary and Angelo will stand as marshals at the event. The Walk for Freedom is a silent march through Dandenong. "Our project is aimed at combating human trafficking locally and globally," Zachary said. "One of the ways we will be helping A21 is by letterbox dropping a number of pamphlets to houses in Hampton Park and Narre Warren.
"The goal will be to increase the amount of people who could possibly attend the walk or are aware of it." The A21 campaign develops global programs and initiatives to inform the general public about human trafficking, as well as encouraging the public to fight against trafficking in their own way. "We strongly believe that collaborations and connections are the best way that we can contribute to eradicating human trafficking on a global and local level," Angelo said. "The A21 organisation already works efficiently and effectively in the sector. "We were inspired to work in tandem via the community to support their important work to abolish slavery in the twenty first century." According to A21, there are millions of slaves in the world today, it's a $150 billion
dollar industry globally, yet unfortunately only ever one percent is ever rescued. Zachary said, "We aim to bring this serious global issue to the forefront of the community's mind in the City of Casey. "We believe that success is not just determined by money raised, but by creating a movement of awareness in the A21 organisation's important work, that everyday seeks to abolish human trafficking and slavery." The Dandenong Walk for Freedom will begin with free, family fun activities including live music, face painting and more. At 12pm, the Walk for Freedom will commence through Dandenong's CBD. The group will walk, holding signs and passing out flyers with the message of human trafficking. To donate visit: https://www.a21.org/fundraising-team.php?id=76973

Right lane truck ban on Monash goes permanent More relief is on the way for drivers in the south east, with the state government getting early works underway on the second stage of the Monash Freeway Upgrade. The second stage of the upgrade will see an added 36 kilometres of new lanes and is expected to save drivers an additional nine minutes in travel time when complete. There will also be a ban on trucks travelling in the right hand lane. Premier Daniel Andrews joined minister for roads Luke Donnellan on Wednesday, 3 October to announce the start of early works in Narre Warren. Smart on-road technology will be installed from the South Gippsland Freeway to the Beaconsfield Interchange, giving drivers live traffic information and managing lanes to get people where they need to go faster and safer. Drilling is taking place primarily on the Monash Freeway between the South Gippsland Freeway and Cardinia Road to review the ground conditions of where overhead Lane Use Management system gantries will be installed. The Labor Government has also announced that it will permanently ban trucks from the right-hand lane of the Monash, following a
successful six-month trial to improve safety. Since the trial ban was introduced crashes have reduced by almost 40 percent. “Early works are underway, the business case has been ticked off and we’ve shortlisted contractors to build this massive project we’re getting on with the second stage of the Monash Freeway Upgrade,” minister for roads and road safety Luke Donnellan said. “These right lane truck bans are reducing crashes, improving traffic flow and helping the 200,000 drivers that rely on the Monash to get home safely.” Restrictions will continue to apply to trucks travelling in both directions between Huntingdale Road, Mount Waverley and Jacksons Road, Noble Park. The second stage of the Monash Freeway Upgrade will cost $711 million and is being jointly funded with the Federal Government. Construction of the new lanes will start next year, with completion expected in mid-2022. “We said we’d deliver the first stage of this massive upgrade of the Monash, and we have,” premier Daniel Andrews said. “Now, we’re not wasting a moment getting on with the next stage of works so we can get more people where they need to be sooner.”

FIRE ACTION WEEK
7 - 14 October 2018 Stay informed
Message from the Premier This week is Fire Action Week, a time for all Victorians to start planning for a long and hot summer ahead. Low rainfall over winter has dried out much of the state and forecasts from the Bureau of Meteorology of a dry and hot summer means that we need to prepare for an earlier and longer ire season. Our dedicated emergency services are working with communities, businesses and local councils to reduce the risk for our state.
So please, talk to your family, friends and neighbours about your plans, and make sure you know when to leave and where to go to stay safe. You can also ind out more information, monitor warnings and check the daily Fire Danger Ratings at emergency.vic.gov.au Taking the right steps now could make all the difference.
Recent bushires – both here in Australia and overseas – remind us of the need to understand our own ire risk. Planning and preparing for ire is a responsibility that belongs to everyone.

1. Plan what you’ll do in the event of a fire, talk to your household and know where to access information on high risk days. 2. Keep grass short. Fire can ignite and travel quickly through long grass. 3. Get rid of dry grass, leaves, twigs and loose bark around your home. 4. Remove or prune shrubs near windows and under branches of mature trees.
5. Cut back overhanging tree branches close to property – no branches within 10 metres. 6. Keep gutters and roof areas clear of leaf litter (if you are physically able to). 7. Remove all materials from around the home that could burn, such as boxes, furniture and woodpiles.

FIRE ACTION WEEK
7 - 14 October 2018
Prepare for a long season Victorians have been urged to use this year’s Fire Action Week (7-14 October) to consider what an earlier and longer bushfire season could mean for them and their loved ones. CFA Chief Officer Steve Warrington said Victoria’s annual fire planning and preparation awareness week was a time to increase your understanding of the fire risk where you live, to prepare your property, and to talk to loved ones about what you’ll do to stay safe from fire. “Making informed decisions is vital to your safety during a fire. Now is the best time to understand your fire risk and get prepared,” he said. “This week, talk to your family, friends and neighbours about the fire risk where you live and make plans for what you’ll do on hot, dry, windy days.” Following Victoria’s second-driest September on record, forecasts show that there is potential for an earlier and longer fire season in Victoria. “Taking steps to get prepared before the fire season means you know what to do when you’re at risk,” Chief Officer Warrington said. “Preparing your property means you minimise the chance of property damage during a fire, even if you plan to leave early, so keep trees, overhanging branches and shrubs to a minimum near your home, particularly around and under windows. A big clean up before the fire season can make a huge difference to the safety and survival of your home in a bushfire. “You also need to plan and prepare for your safety. Pack important documents, photos, medications, money and clothes so you can leave easily before a fire starts. Understand your risk and plan ahead. Know what to do on hot, dry, windy days when fires will start and spread quickly. Plan for all situations by talking to your family and friends about how you’ll know when to leave, where you’ll go and how you’ll get there. “Make sure you know to check Fire Danger Ratings on the VicEmergency website and app and get into the habit of checking them daily to understand the fire risk in your area. “It’s up to all of us to stay informed by using more than one source of information, un-
derstanding the three levels of warnings, what they mean and what you should do.” Chief Officer Warrington said waiting until the Fire Danger Rating is Severe, Extreme or Code Red puts lives in serious danger. “Choose the safer option of leaving early and protect yourself and your family.” “Leaving early means leaving before a fire starts, otherwise you risk driving your through thick smoke, fallen trees and power lines, and face the threat of major delays, traffic collisions, being trapped or worse,” he said. The vast majority of people living in bush or rural areas should have a plan to leave early. “Unless your property is fully prepared, you are physically able to work in extremely hot and smoky conditions, you have a storage tank with 10,000 litres of water and special firefighting equipment, and you understand the danger you will face - you should simply not be there during a fire.” CFA brigades across the state will be talking to their communities about the local fire risk, how to prepare, and what to do to stay safe over summer. Check ’what’s on www.cfa.vic. gov.au/about/whats-on in your area. Visit cfa.vic.gov.au for more information about bushfire planning and preparation, and about leaving early.

Simple plan could save lives This Fire Action Week, follow some simple planning and preparation tips to make sure you’re ready for the upcoming bushfire season. Prepare your property; it can minimise property damage even if you leave early. Move furniture, woodpiles and mulch away from windows, decks and eaves; Prune tree branches so they are not overhanging the roof or touching walls; Keep grass shorter than 10cm. Regularly remove leaves and twigs; Don’t have plants higher than 10cm in front of windows or glass doors; Before you leave, make sure you remove all flammable items from around your home. Houses have been lost from things as simple as embers landing on a doormat; Check that your home and contents insurance is current and includes a level of cover in line with current building standards and regulations. Have a plan, make sure your family knows it, and stick to it. Check the fire risk where you live Decide which Fire Danger Rating is your trigger to leave; start checking Fire Danger Ratings daily.

tion, roads are blocked, someone is hurt or people aren’t where you expect them to be? When planning with kids, make sure you know your local school policy for fire risk days. Some schools close on Code Red days, it’s important to know so you can plan for all situations. Create an emergency kit so you are ready to leave quickly and calmly. Know how you will monitor for warnings and do this regularly on hot, windy days. Always use more than one source to monitor warnings; ABC local radio, Sky News TV, the VicEmergency App, emergency.vic.gov.au and VicEmergency Hotline on 1800 226 226. Defending your home requires at least two fit adults, at least 10,000 litres of water, protective clothing, and appropriate firefighting hoses and pumps. Most homes in high risk bushfire areas are not defendable on Code Red days. Defending your home is very risky - you could lose your life or be seriously injured.

Working together to reduce risk – how you can help Predictions are for an early bushfire season this year. AusNet Services is conducting helicopter inspections to get a clear picture of how the landscape is looking, but we need your help. If you have a private electric line, please ensure it is clear of vegetation to reduce bushfire risk. A registered electrician or certified tree clearer can help you clear your property of any unwanted vegetation. During a bushfire you may experience interruptions to your electricity and/or gas supply, even if your property isn’t directly affected. For this reason your bushfire contingency plan should factor in possible loss of gas and electricity. Now is the time to prepare for the summer ahead. FOCUS ON … BEACONSFIELD
Beaconsfield's Corner Post Cafe mixes the vibrant beauty of the town's history with gourmet food and excellent coffee. Built in 1878, the building was originally the town's Post Office and operated as such until 2001. Much of the original building is still intact today; a feature which store owner Stewart Saw says contributes to the cafe's homely setting. "This cafe offers a different setting to sit with friends or family and enjoy a meal and coffee," Stewart explained. "It has both indoor and outdoor seating and because it's an old house, you can sit in different rooms instead of (just) one." With an in-house designed menu, The Corner Post's chefs are renowned for taking great care in the preparation of each and every meal. And
with the cafe's head chef having international experience, customers are bound to find a menu that not only excites them but makes them feel good as well. "We offer table service dining of gourmet breakfast and lunch and we also have a wide selection of cakes and house-made scones and muffins to die for," Stewart said. "We also have a very large array of beverages including great coffee and our tea is brewed in a teapot with tea leaves and not tea bags!" Open from 8.30am to 4pm, The Corner Post Cafe is a licensed gourmet cafe located at 19-21 Woods Street, Beaconsfield and can be found online at facebook.com/thecornerpostcafebeaconsfield. FOCUS ON … SHOPPING IN BERWICK
Fashion fun in Berwick On Friday 19 October, High Street will come alive with fashion, fun and food thanks to the annual Berwick VIP Festival. Proudly presented by the Berwick Business Group, the fashion festival is firmly entrenced on the Berwick calendar. This year's festival has been extended to include a full day of sales and specials between 10am and 9pm. Enjoy workshops, shopping, indulge in lunch and sample what local traders have to offer. Don’t miss the catwalk action in Kempson Walk from 6.30pm, followed by a glass of Champagne and in-store sales. Spokesperson Magda D’Abaco said the jam-packed event was the ideal opportunity for locals to experience the unique and exciting stores Berwick has to offer. Ms D’Abaco said all the retailers come together to put on a great night out in Berwick. “(These events are) extremely important. We have to be competitive against other larger big retailer precincts like Chadstone and Fountain Gate so that the community knows they don’t have to go elsewhere to shop - they can stay in Berwick,“ Ms D’Abaco said. “There’s about 12 or 13 boutiques in Berwick and we all make sure everyone is catered for and anyone can find something in one of our stores.” Don’t miss out on this amazing night. Gather the girlfriends and make a night of it. Tickets are now on sale via eventbrite.

Inspired by the Big Apple Whether it's hair, beard or coffee - the team at New York Barbers has got customers covered. Having recently reopened in a brand new location, New York Barbers is back and bigger than ever. Continuing to offer haircuts, beard trims and cut-throat shaves, the new ten-seat barber is double the size of its previous premises and now offers barista made coffee. The slice of New York is led by veteran barber Mario Fallace, who has over 35 years industry experience. Working alongside him is his team of ten barbers - including son, barber and marketing manager, Dion Fallace. "We've only been open one week but everyone loves it. We had 130 people come in on our first day - that was the most we had ever done in a day," Dion said. "In the old shop, even though it was small, customers still really paid attention to the design and the theme, but now since we're in the bigger shop, everyone walks in and is just like; 'wow.'
There will be plenty of fashion action in Kempson Walk. 173277
Friday 19th October 10am - 9pm High Street, Berwick
"I think everyone's reaction is just (shock) ... they haven't really seen something like this around here before." Dion explained that New York Barbers' move was inspired by the team's devotion to their customers. The bigger premises has helped to cater for the growing customer base and has helped to cut down customer wait times. "In terms of barber shops, New York Barbers is one of the biggest in Australia," Dion said. "And there's still a lot more coming, so stay tuned." New York Barbers is open Monday to Friday from 8am to 5.30pm and Saturday 7.30am to 1.30pm. Please keep in mind that Ney York Barbers is walk-in only. New York Barbers is located at 30 Adams Lane in Berwick. For more information, phone 9707 2215 or find them on Facebook at www. facebook.com/newyorkbarbers or Instagram (@newyorkbarbers).

FOCUS ON … SHOPPING IN BERWICK
A natural and organic salon Allura Hairdressing Boutique began 17 years ago when Director Leiza Cester followed her dream of a complete one-on-one, natural and organic hairdressing day spa. "Research indicated clients' frustrations grew from their hairdresser lacking inspiration, being passed from one stylist to another, kept waiting and wondering if their stylist was actually qualified," Leiza said. "Clients indicated they were fearful that their hairdresser uses nasty chemicals that compromise the health of them, their hair and the earth. Through this research, and from humble beginnings, the Allura hair story began in 2001." Driven by Leiza's belief in seeking the finest natural and organic hair products derived from Australian sources and the power of giving back and pampering those in need, the first Allura hair was opened. "Clients deserve to receive the 'wow' experience yet often find their service was inconsistent. This is certainly not the case at Allura," Leiza said. "At Allura, our clients are our number one priority and we promise a 'touch of class with high quality natural and organic hairstyling for you'.

An incredible weekend of racing at the Cranbourne Racecourse will all begin in just a matter of hours. Last year's Cup winner, Godolphin star Folkswood, is set to have a tilt at back-to-back titles - this time with an Irish jockey on board. Folkswood backed up a stellar performance at Cranbourne last year with a third-place finish in the Cox Plate to legendary mare, Winx. Berisha, which finished second to Folkswood at last year's Cranbourne Cup, is also set to return for another crack at victory this time around. Group 1 New Zealand Derby winner Vin De Dance - trained by the legendary Murray Baker - is also set to line-up in Sunday's big race, as is local hope Sully, which ran second to Ace High in the Group 1 Victoria Derby last November. Group 2 winner Spanish Reef, trained by Ken Keys also out of Cranbourne, would be another particularly popular winner of Sunday's main event while the red-hot Furrion will be another to watch. Cranbourne Turf Club chief executive Neil Bainbridge expected that Folkswood's con-
nections again had the Cranbourne Cup lined up as part of another Cox Plate campaign. A whole host of leading trainers - including Charlie Appleby, David Hayes, Ciaron Maher, Darren Weir, Gai Waterhouse and Mick Price - entered horses for this year's running of the Cranbourne Cup once nominations opened, showing the esteem in which the race is held. "There's been a lot change here at the club over the past six months," Bainbridge said in excitement leading into the big day on Sunday. "There's been a lot of investment in the facilities so I think customers - when they arrive on course this weekend for not only Sunday's TAB Cranbourne Cup but certainly for the Inglis Pinker Pinker Plate on Friday night - will notice a very different-looking racecourse. "Our plan each year is to get better than we were the year before and continue to invest, so we've made significant investments over the past six months. "The club's got some exciting plans to get to another level again next year." The News understands that may include another jump in prizemoney up to around the half a million dollar mark. "From our point of view as a club, while this is probably the pinnacle for the year of what we do for the TAB Cranbourne Cup carnival, we've also got Melbourne Cup day to look forward to - so that's exciting - and the famous tri-codes event also happens in the Spring Racing Carnival on Saturday night, 17 November so to get four high-profile feature days for our club during the Spring Racing Carnival really entrenches us just on the outskirts of metropolitan racing," Bainbridge said. "It's the City of Casey's biggest sporting and social event, and it's event that caters for all families as well as racegoers."

Netball’s hardest workers By Hayley Wildes Within every successful sporting organisation, there are people who go above and beyond what is expected of them. These individuals do it for the love and the community. For the Casey Netball Association, Debbie Schramm and Sue Booth have done just that for over 20 years. Both were recognised for their tremendous contributions to the Casey Netball Association at the Casey Demons Netball Club launch recently. Having a Casey team compete in the Victorian Netball League (VNL) was the dream of both Debbie and Sue, so it was fitting that they received service awards when the newlyformed VNL club was launched. Both started their respective journeys with the Casey Netball Association (formerly Cranbourne West Netball) in the 1990s and both have worked tirelessly to help Casey become what it is today - a local netball hub with over 4500 registered players. The two met when Debbie coached Sue’s eldest daughter Rebekah (now Casey VNL president) in the late 1990s and the rest, as they say, is history. berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au
“That’s sort of how our friendship began,” Sue said. “There are so many parallels in our lives; we’re born four days apart, we’re both oneeyed Collingwood supporters, our mothers’ names are both Jean, and last Christmas we bought each other the same gift without knowing - just some real uncanny stuff.” Both were vital board members for the better part of 20 years and although they are no longer on the board, they remain key drivers for the Casey Netball Association; Debbie as general manager and Sue as operations manager. “You sort of just keep putting one foot in front of the other and you probably don’t think about it until you have a day like last Wednesday where you talk about it and start reflecting,” Sue said of her time with Casey. “We may be getting older, but we still have a lot of knowledge and I know people are grateful for us here and it’s a lovely feeling to feel so appreciated - the award was just lovely. “Obviously with what has happened at Casey with the VNL licence, it’s a time of transition and it’s a time for new beginnings, but I think the current board is trying to establish that there’s still room for everything and our

that our VNL dream is coming to fruition, we want to support that because that was our dream.” Speaking about the VNL licence, Sue can’t help but smile. “We still pinch ourselves to be honest,” she said. “(That first game) will be mind-blowing really.” Debbie and Sue have given so much to netball in the region and you can rest assured that they will be front and centre when the Casey Demons compete in their inaugural season of VNL in 2019. Demons are on the court By Hayley Wildes In what was a major milestone for Casey Demons Netball, the club officially launched its inaugural season with a celebration breakfast recently at Casey Stadium. Having successfully applied for a licence for the 2019 Victorian Netball League (VNL) season, the Demons will bring elite netball to Casey in the hope of growing the sport for all in the region. With representatives from the Melbourne Football Club, Casey Demons Football Club and many other key supporters and stakeholders from varying community organisations in attendance, the importance of this club to so many people was evident. Melbourne Football Club general manager of football operations, Josh Mahoney, spoke about the passion within the room and how he hopes that translates on court. "To be awarded this licence is a significant moment and if the passion that has already come out today is anything to go by of what this team is going to bring on the court, then I think we're heading for a very successful period of time," he said. "When we were asked to get involved with the bid, for us it was a no-brainer. "First of all it was about what we're trying to do in this region; it's a no-brainer because of the work we're trying to do in the community, it's a no-brainer because of the partnerships we've already got out here in the City of Casey, and it's a no-brainer because we want to build the best programs we can - the best programs and pathways for kids in this region, but also in elite programs." Inaugural head coach Robynn Pym spoke with enthusiasm about what the future holds for Casey Netball. "The opportunity to be a part of this, I just couldn't say no," Pym said.
Rebekah Bogos (Casey VNL President) and Cindy Bell (Casey VNL committee member) were driving forces in helping Casey gain a VNL licence. 185127 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS "It's going to be a really great environment and a great program. Registration for the screening day has seen 150 players register, so we're pretty excited." She also acknowledged what this program
means to the region and for the young netballers coming through the ranks. "What it means is that kids can actually be playing netball, playing the game they love and look for a local role model. When you ask
young kids about various elite athletes in the netball world in the Suncorp Super Netball, they don't actually know them personally," she said. "This gives them an opportunity to say 'oh, I saw her down the street at Woolworths and she buys the same things that I buy!' "I think it's really important to be getting girls on the move, getting them in the community and getting leaders out there. It's not just about what we do on-court, it's how we hold ourselves off the court as well and I think when kids can see that, we'll get more and more playing the sport." Pym has been involved with coaching netball for over 25 years and her involvement with the Victorian junior netball talent pathway and local leagues make her the perfect person to lead Casey forward and grow the sport in the region. Most recently, Pym was the senior coach at the Berwick Netball Club in season 2018. "There are so many talented athletes in this area and they're all doing it on their own without a huge, elite high-performance program," she said. "So joining forces with Casey Demons is giving them an elite, high-performance program - and not one where they just show up and play, but where they're actually getting as fit as they can be. "From an on-court perspective, I'm looking for excited players, I'm looking for determination and looking to build a really elite environment. "For me, I'm not just coaching because I want to coach netball, I want to coach for the community - it's just really exciting." With the season kicking off in April 2019, the Casey Demons are certainly already well prepared to make some noise in the VNL.

By Nick Creely The new look Casey-South Melbourne - featuring four debutants - had an edge about them in Saturday’s comfortable Victorian Premier Cricket over Frankston Peninsula at Casey Fields. They resembled the 2016/17 version of themselves, a well-drilled side that has plenty of strings to their bow. It was a slow deck on a glorious day to start the season, and the Heat wasted little time in winning the toss and batting. Frankston openers Tom Ewing and Tom Wood started steadily and managed to squeeze out 40 runs in the opening 11 overs. One of the Swans’ other new recruits seamer Josh Dowling (2/43) - got the ball talking and forced Ewing into a false stroke, with keeper Devin Pollock moving brilliantly, low to his left, to take a ripping catch. Wood and Liam Tonkin (56) built a platform to launch a massive total from, and combined for 86 runs between them, but the Swans were well placed in the field and more importantly, bowled tight lengths and often cramped up the pair. Tonkin eventually gave his wicket up to Dowling, with skipper Lachie Sperling taking a catch to leave the visitors 2/126. Two stellar bits of glovework by Devin Pollock - resulting in the stumping of Chris Dew and Gordon Waterfall off Sperling saw the Swans take control, with the Swans suffocating the Heat and slowly bringing down the run rate. Sperling, in particular was outstanding, finishing with 2/33 off his 10 overs, and was hard to play with his varieties and field placements. Wood continued to build his innings but couldn’t find a partner that was going to stick around long enough, and despite some majestic strokes and creativity, the Heat struggled to tick over the scoreboard. Late spells by Lambden (3/36) - who bowled with venom and energy - and Maxwell (0/35) were particularly damaging, with the Heat unable to put the pair away. In an entertaining final over, Lambden picked up two wickets in three balls and saw
Casey celebrate after taking the opening wicket of the match on Saturday. 185947 Picture: ROB CAREW his last ball edged through third man for four, with the visitors having to settle for 7/203. Debutants and new recruits Jared Maxwell (12) and Ryan Quirk (20) strode onto Casey Fields with formidable new ball pair Ben Ashkenazi and Nick Boland ready to take aim, and looked comfortable at the level immediately. Similar to the Heat, the Swans struggled to find boundaries and were cautious, but managed to tick over the score to 38 before Aidan Wheeler picked up Maxwell. Not long after, Quirk’s stay at the crease came to an end after dynamic all-rounder Brodie Symons (3/35) got through the gate, and after Michael Wallace also fell victim to Symons, it seemed like the Swans were falling into old habits. But skipper Lachie Sperling (69) and the dangerous Jordan Wyatt (55) lifted their rating, at first weathering the storm and steadying the ship, and then accelerating. The pair swiftly put on a match-defining 107 run stand, with Sperling contributing three maximums and Wyatt one, and knew just when to pull the trigger or knock the ball around for singles, and eventually the Swans crossed the Heat with four wickets and 11 balls to spare. Sperling - who will step down to vice-captain with the arrival on Englishman Luke Wells -told the News that their ability to maintain control came down to their mental side of the game. The Swans will take on Prahran on Saturday and Fitzroy Doncaster on Sunday. berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au

Bloods pile on the pain... By Nick Creely
DDCA
TURF 1-3
12401358-RA41-18
If the opening day of the Turf 1 season was any true indicator, it would be safe to say that Springvale South is looking even more formidable than first thought. While reigning premiers Mordialloc were without their superstars in Ian Daniel and Nuwan Kulasekera and had just one of their premiership bowling group available, the sheer dominance of the Bloods' batting group was evident from the outset. It wasn't the most ideal start with opener Liam Hamilton falling victim to new skipper Dylan Campbell (3/67), who enjoyed a strong opening spell. But aggressive opener Nathan King (61) was in no mood to simply see off the new ball, launching a tirade of sixes, and combined with Tim Ford (50), saw the home side quickly reach 1/90 as the lack of bowling depth for the Bloodhounds soon began a major problem. King's highly aggressive nature eventually brought about his wicket, but it was an innings breathtaking from the beginning, and a brief fight back from the visitors as expected saw them peg the score back to a respectable 3/125. That's until DDCA legend Steven Spojaric stepped up to the plate, combining brilliantly with returning all-rounder Jarrod Armitage to pile on 117 runs in good time, with Spoljaric carving 19 boundaries to the fence in a sensational performance. Arguably the greatest ever player in the competition's history, Spoljaric calmly passed yet another century, finishing on 107 before departing. Spoljaric's - a five time Wookey medallist shows no signs of slowing down at the ripe age of 41, and toyed with the Bloodhounds' fieldsman in a class display that has ominous signs of what he may achieve this year Armitage's classy 38 and skipper Craig Slocombe's entertaining 37 - that featured two sixes - saw the Bloods reach 7/313 in just 61 overs, before a declaration gave the home side just under 20 overs to play with. Brendan and Ryan Morris gave the Bloodhounds a fighting chance at stumps, helping the visitors reach 0/66 off 19 overs. Berwick, meanwhile, got going after a slowish start to reach 7/250 at Arch Brown Reserve against North Dandenong. The Bears didn't have it all their own way and at one point sat 5/106 with skipper and superstar Matt Chasemore back in the sheds after falling to spinner Akshay Ballal (1/86), before Nathan Pilon (58) and new recruit Brendan Rose (74 not out) helped steer the ship. The former Casey-South Melbourne club champion brought his good batting form from his last season of Premier Cricket to compile a classy half century, striking seven boundaries and also combining late with Jack Phillips (33) to reach a strong total. The Maroons withstood a heap of pressure to get to stumps unscathed, and will resume with all 10 wickets in hand after Syed Mehmood (6) and Austin Heldt (11) got the visitors to 0/17 at stumps. Overseas recruit Luke Davis, meanwhile, who last played for St Mary's in 2009/10, started his second stint with the Saints with a bang, carving 100 and helping his team post 7/283 against Buckley Ridges at Park Oval. Davis' last stint at the club yielded just 37 runs at 4.63, but showed great maturity this time around to make the most of his opportunities against a class bowling attack featuring Andersen, Daniel Watson, Chanaka Silva, Greg Todd and Wes Nicholas. Helped by a typically classy 76 by Ruwantha Kellepotha, the Saints - despite the best efforts of gun bowler Jurgen Andersen (4/52) - give

And Hallam Kalora Park racked up 7/257 against HSD at Reedy Reserve, with star recruit Jaime Brohier (30), Jagveer Hayer (64), Jordan Hammond (31) and Ryan Hillard making runs. In Turf 2, the sheer class and experience of Narre South captain-coach Scott Phillips was on show in a stunning bowling spell against Narre North on Saturday. Chasing the Lions' first innings score of 199 after late cameos by Rumesh Rangana (62), Brad Parker (38) and Senel Ekanayake (33), Phillips tore the Rams to pieces in the final hour before stumps, taking 5/3 off seven overs to leave the visitors reeling at 5/20. Phillips produced an unplayable spell that has almost certainly got his side on the back seat for an opening round win. Cranbourne, meanwhile, will be looking to avoid outright after a disastrous opening day of the season against Dingley at Souter Oval. Another sublime bowling effort - this time by Dingoes spearhead Andrew Dalby (7/23) saw an almost unrecognisable Eagles side skittled for just 60 in just fewer than two hours. Dalby ensured the Eagles couldn't find any momentum with the bat whatsoever, taking five of the first seven scalps to leave Matt Blackman's side 7/30, and eventually 8/33 when Dalby got through the gate of Luke Dinger. They clawed their way to 60. A couple of early wickets saw the Dingoes fall to 2/21 and brighten the prospects of the Eagles who had started brightly with the new ball, before gun batsmen Matt Hague (30) and skipper Corey Booth (45) ensured they could comfortably surpass the Eagles' first innings

total, eventually declaring at 7/103. The Eagles are 1/19 at stumps. In the other matches across the Turf 2 competition on Saturday, Parkmore Pirates are also heading towards a strong opening round win after a brilliant team display with the bat against Dandenong West at Greaves Reserve Batting first, the Pirates got off to a cracking start, compiling 64 for the first wicket, before new recruit Ammar Bajwa (78) and returning star Aditya Ganesh (69) punished the Westers, combining for 23 boundaries and three sixes to flatten the home side, before declaring at 8/309 and with 12 overs left to take some wickets. Despite an early wicket, the Westers fought hard, with skipper Matthew Collett (25) and Peter Atkinson (14) getting their side to 1/48. The match between St Brigid's/St Louis and Narre Warren at Bonbeach Oval was delayed until Saturday.
In Turf 3, Wickets tumbled at Perc Allison Oval, but Beaconsfield remains in a strong position to get its season off on a bright note. The Tigers lost the toss and fielded against Parkfield. Former Wookey winner Alex Roberts (2/15), long time stalwart Callan Tout (3/22), Bill Temby (3/3) and Jake Cutting (1/9) all bowled superbly, and despite brief fight from skipper Tony Payne (28), the Bears could only muster up 104 in 58 overs. The three late wickets for the Tigers had the home side in a spot of bother at 3/19, but Benbow (15) and Kevin Baldsing (14) managed to steady the ship and leave their side 3/48 at stumps, only 57 runs away from victory. Keysborough, meanwhile, posted a competitive 226 against Fountain Gate at Rowley Allan Reserve, Lynbrook carved up 5/290 against Silverton, while the match between Lyndale and Coomora was delayed until Saturday.

Cranbourne ladies shine Another game against a hot contender from last year's Premier League was no problem for the Cranbourne ladies bowls team, which claimed victory by nine shots against Doncaster. A home game with a number of spectators looking on initially had the home crowd in shock after Doncaster got off to a strong start. But the girls realised: "hey this is a tough competition and we need to lift our game". They did not disappoint, and by the lunch break they were within reach and after a little get together on the green they were reminded that Cranbourne had the momentum and with that all rinks fired up and got the job done. Skip Yvonne Van Der Wees and her crew of Sandra Mueller, Heather Witherden and Kath Dudink were simply outstanding - winning by 13 shots, which sealed victory for Cranbourne. Cranbourne ladies 59 (14 points) defeated Doncaster 50 (2 points) Other midweek bowls results this week were: Cranbourne 2 Div 2 Open 57 (2 points) was defeated by Keysborough 60. Cranbourne 3 Div 3 Open 38 (0 points) was defeated by Narre Warren 66. Cranbourne 4 Six-A-Side Open 55 (14 points) defeated Pakenham 25. Round 1 of Saturday Pennant started the week off with disappointing results for the top two Cranbourne sides, which went down by small margins. After a big build-up during the week, head selector Doug Boggie was not pleased with the result but was still very confident that the club would fight back quickly and get the season back on track. Side 1 Division 2 Playing at home, skip Barry 'The General' Thomas played very well with support from Vic Butera, Gavin Wright and the steady as always Peter Elgar - winning by six shots - while skip Ron 'Two Dogs' Lyfield just got home by a couple of shots
but they could not close the gap with the side going down in the end by eight shots. Cranbourne 70 (4 points) lost to Mulgrave CC 78 (14 points). Side 2 Division 3 It was much the same story at Keysborough, despite a great effort by skip Sue Hudson and her team of Frank Male, Lynne Wood and Roger Roscoe getting up by six shots but unfortunately that was not enough to save the day with the side going down by just five shots. Cranbourne 77 (4 points) lost to Keysborough 82 (14 points). Side 3 Division 5 At last some good news for the club with a fantastic victory for the next two sides. Skip Ron Shields and his crew of Bob Scott, Barry Graham and club legend Ray Boskell won by 17 shots, which was all that was needed to defeat Edithvale in the end by 17 shots. Cranbourne 84 (16 points) defeated Edithvale 67 (2 points). Side 4 Division 7 The big winners of the day were skip Frank Coulter and his crew of Brian Turton, Paul Males and John Forsyth. They took the prize of the day with an outstanding performance of 25 shots up. The overall winning margin was 38 shots with full points, which was quite amazing considering that one of the Cranbourne players had to retire from the game ill, leaving one rink with two bowls not played each end for half the game. Impressively, they still managed to win on that rink. Cranbourne 100 (18 points) defeated Dandenong Club 62 (0 points). Side 5 - Six-a-Side Side 5 suffered a seven-shot loss after a hard tussle all day with some great bowls played, particularly by skip John Gardner and his crew of Feeley and Williams winning by 11 shots. Cranbourne 29 (2 points) lost to Churchill 36 (12 points).

Barry 'The General' Thomas was in fine touch in the beautiful sunshine.
An impressive turnaround in form Narre Warren's midweek bowlers turned their results around with Division 2 and Division 3 both winning. At the Dandenong Club, Division 2 had a close eight-shot win. Alan Mark, Iain Stevenson, Rod Lane and Jim Millar had 18 shots on the card before their opponents scored, on their way to a 29-10 victory. Eric Sydenham, Wally Finlayson, Peter Hayden and Brent Hone followed suit with 11 on the card and won 2113. Geoff Ampt, Wilma Haringsma, Phil Howard and Wilma Stevenson could not buy a shot and went down 9-28. Narre Warren (1) 14-59 defeated Dandenong Club (1) 2-51. At Fountain Gate, the Division 3 team had a comfortable 28-shot win over Cranbourne. Stan Bulmer, Pauline Kempf, Joe McGuire and Judy Naughton won 25-10 and Pam Uren, Enid Gibb, Ernesto Vergara and Peter Groom won 23-13, while Janice Moran, Rose Rasmussen, Keith Mark and Geoff Miller had a close game, but still won 18-15. Narre Warren (2) 16-66 defeated Cranbourne (3) 0-38. Last week's winning team, Division 6A (sixa-side) suffered a loss against Hampton Park. Nancy Pugh, Helen McCarthy and Graham Peterson again won, 24-14, but Diane Peterson, Jeanette Cox and Brian Fraser went down 8-32. Narre Warren (3) 2-32 lost to Hampton Park (2) 12-46. Saturday Pennant resumed on the weekend. Narre Warren has four teams listed. The result was two wins and two losses. Division 3 played at Fountain Gate and had an all-rink win over Pakenham. John Wright, Tracey Storm, Brent Hone and Zak Storm was the strongest, winning 29-18, while Eric Sydenham, Zade Bulmer, Erik Luyters and Wilma Stevenson won 25-15.
