MORE TO LOVE The editor’s desk It was heartwarming to see the effort made by about half a dozen men on Monday to save a tiny baby bird no bigger than a cricket ball. And the joy on everyone's face when it was rescued and returned to its parents - priceless. There was no thankyou and it was agreed the parents would continue to swoop passers by but no-one cared. The dedication of wildlife carers around Noosa is to be applauded particularly in this their busiest time of year. Also look out in next week's Noosa Today for our house and garden magazine Inside Out Noosa. It'll be included in each paper. ● - Margaret Maccoll

THIS WEEK WE’RE TALKING ABOUT… TEEN’S PHONE TARGETED IN CYBERCRIME

Olive is thrilled to receive a photo of her dad and uncle at her 90th birthday celebration.

PARTY TIME FOR RSL’S OLIVE BY JIM FAGAN Olive Donaldson remembers when Tewantin's Poinciana Avenue was just a dirt track used by horses and wagons and the occasional car. She laughs: "It became a gravel road, later a one bitumen strip, then two and now it's multi-laned and impossible to get a car park." She's looked out on Tewantin's main road from the same house she was born in 90 years ago. The date was October 3 and last Wednesday she celebrated her milestone day with a birthday lunch at the local RSL. It's appropriate the club was the place for the party as working with the Sub Branch's women's auxiliary groups has been a major part of Olive's life. "My dad, Bill Ross, and his brother Ben came back from the war in 1919 and they wanted to do something for the Diggers

in the district. "In 1920, Harry Buchanan was State Secretary of the RSL which had just been formed. He came here on his honeymoon and he brought together Dad, Uncle Ben and other veterans to form the Sub Branch in August of that year. Uncle Ben died of war injuries in 1950. He was 68. "Dad was made a life member of the RSL in 1959. He had lingering effects from his gassing during the war but he managed a butchery at Pomona before starting his own business at Tewantin in 1945, WJ Ross and Sons. We had it for many years. I used to do the books and deliver the meat. Dad died in 1975. He was 78." Olive is patron and life member of the Women's Auxiliary of the RSL and works with War Widows and Legacy. She is a former Noosa Councillor (1985-94), patron and life member of the Tewantin Heritage and Historical Society and loves to welcome

tourists at the local Visitor Information Bureau. "We were always taught that what you get from the community you give back to the community. This was established during the war and Depression years. If people couldn't give with money, they gave with kind, like with their labours or something like that." "When new neighbours came to our area, Mum would send me round with a billy can of tea and plate of scones." Dean Harlow, RSL Sub Branch treasurer, was one of the 45 friends and family at the birthday lunch last Wednesday and he surprised Olive with a framed, restored photograph of her dad and uncle in their AIF (Australian Imperial Force) uniforms with text showing their war service history. Later he told Noosa Today: "It's just a small recognition by the Sub Branch of the work Olive has done for the RSL over the years. We wouldn't be where we are without the work of women like her." ●

Noosa Police were called to Hastings Street last Thursday by the family of a 13 year old girl who began receiving disturbing messages from a stranger on her mobile phone. The stranger threatened the girl with texts saying "we are coming for you", "if you go in the water I will get you" and "I'm five minutes away" and was able to use her phone to take photos of her surroundings and post them to her screen background and even speak to her. Noosa Police senior sergeant Ben Carroll said police believe the stranger accessed the phone's GPS data and contact list and was able to listen in to her conversations. The suspect texted the teen using names of the hotel and the beach where she was staying and asked questions about people she conversed with using their first and second names. The suspect played music through the phone and its remote speakers. The suspect even used an Apple translator to possibly translate and speak in an electronic voice to the informant. Police believe the suspect was from another country due to basic spelling errors and backward writing of letters. Police believe the girl may have unwittingly downloaded an App or a virus which has enabled full third party access to her mobile phone. The family was told to contact the Australian Cybercrime Online Reporting Network (ACORN), an Australian Government online reporting tool which advised her to complete a full factory reset which fixed the issue. The advice included NOT storing passwords within the mobile telephone for social media and banking profiles as it is believed they could be accessible as well. Police advise mobile phone users to review their App settings, particularly for location, camera and microphone settings and turn them off unless necessary, enable only trusted friends and family to see your profile and don't accept friend requests from people you don't know. ● 201721004-LB21-17

COVER STORY Cooroy Pink Precinct event last year.

BREAST CANCER MEN GET IT TOO BY MARGARET MACCOLL

A

bout 140 men a year are diagnosed with breast cancer in Australia according to the Cancer Council. Throughout October while the country is flooded with pink to raise awareness of breast cancer in women, Rod Ritchie, who was diagnosed with the disease four years ago, wears blue. The Cooroy Area Residents Association president and IT professional has become an avid campaigner for greater awareness of the disease in men. His efforts along with others working with Breast Cancer Australia, Cancer Council and online blogs have gained some attention with 18 October now set aside for breast cancer awareness in men. Rod is very active online to alert online sites advocating for breast cancer in women that the disease is not gender specific. The limited number of studies on men's breast cancer reveal men make up about 1% of all breast cancer diagnosis but men have a poorer prognosis. This is generally because men are more often diagnosed with an advanced stage of the disease, due to their reluctance to seek medical advice and nonrecognition of their symptoms. A 2012 US study of 13,000 male breast cancer patients found the overall 5-year survival rate in men was 84% compared to 90% in women. When Rod found a lump in his breast he was given the all clear on two initial visits to the doctor. On the third visit and with an inflamed chest he insisted on an ultrasound. Despite his mother having had breast cancer 50 years before and dying from it at the age of 40 he didn't suspect a connection. "When the sonographer's eyes nearly popped out of her head examining the 4 NOOSA TODAY

screen, I knew I was in for bad news," he said. But when his doctor phoned to say he had an aggressive Stage 3 Grade 2 inflammatory breast cancer it came as a shock. "I didn't ever realise men could get breast cancer," he said. Rod was treated with six does of chemotherapy, underwent surgery for a mastectomy then endured 33 doses of radiation as "insurance" and was lastly was put on the oestrogen blocking drug Tamoxifen to reduce the recurrence of breast cancer. He praised the health system and the treatment he received which was the same as that for a woman apart from one significant cosmetic difference, ongoing support and genetic screening for his male offspring. "I was lucky to have a very skillful surgeon, and she was bemused when I asked, "is there any reconstruction"? While it is possible to rebuild a facsimile of a guy's breast, she explained, the lack of extra breast tissue makes this difficult and actually inhibits the surgeon who really has to work hard to round up the affected tissue," Rod said. "So, like nearly all men with breast cancer I know, no reconstruction is our lot in life. No complaints, though, and I've never met one of these men when a scar comparison wasn't part of the greeting, along with a warm man hug." Rod said the stigma for men to have a women's disease was large, most men didn't talk about it and there was little in the way of post-treatment support apart from a couple of online groups. So Rod searched the Internet to discover what he could about his illness. "It's a dreadful disease," he said. "There is no cure."

Rod Ritchie with Queensland Cancer Council Sunshine Coast Coordinator Clare Howard. noosatoday.com.au

Rod Ritchie However with research and new treatments people are staying in remission longer, he said. Two years after his mastectomy Rod had a prostatectomy which was regarded as the sole treatment for an aggressive prostate cancer. By that time he had been tested for the breast cancer gene (BRCA) and discovered he had BRCA1 which makes Rod one in 400 in the population who carry a mutated BRCA gene. BRCA genes do not cause breast cancer. In fact they are tumour suppressor genes and their role is to prevent breast cancer by repairing DNA breaks that can lead to cancer. However, in some people these genes become altered or mutated and may no longer be effective at repairing broken DNA and helping to prevent breast cancer. Because of this, people with a BRCA gene mutation such as BRCA1 are more likely to develop breast cancer. Having the mutated gene meant Rod's children had a 50 per cent chance of it being passed to them. Rod said as a result his daughter was admitted to a high-risk public screening program, but his son, with the same genetic history, got no special screening. This further form of discrimination is something Rod is trying to address. He is also a participant in a Boston College Study to find out the differences between men and women's

experiences in having a high cancer risk due to BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene mutations. Research continues to lead to improvements in cancer treatment. "Treatment for mum 50 years ago consisted of a radical mastectomy and frighteningly high radiation doses that left her right chest horrendously disfigured," Rod said. "That was her full treatment, since chemo and hormone blockers were not then available. I realize I've been lucky to live in a wonderful medical era, and that I have benefited from many advances in breast oncology since then." Rod does not look forward to October and what it brings in the form of lighthearted treatment and sexualization of the disease by well meaning charities and commercial exploitation of the disease by many companies. He hopes breast cancer campaigns shift from awareness-raising to evidence-based information that does not trivialize the disease, that includes men and does more to help Stage IV people. "I'm determined to call out breast cancer groups that continue to ignore men," he said. "So that my buddies and those newly diagnosed, don't have to go through treatment alone." ●

HARDSHIP HUB IS BRINGING THE HELP BY MARGARET MACCOLL Jacob Mossop admits his life was "going downhill" before he found St Vinnie's who helped him turn it around. Jacob was camping at John's Landing, not working and "not hanging out with the right people". He is now living in share accommodation at Cooroy and has gone back to school to complete Year 12. His next goal is to find some work, graduate at the end of next year and get into the army reserve, and he'd like to travel. "They're lovely people. They helped me get back," he said of St Vincent de Paul staff. "I feel a lot better - doing things and succeeding." Last Thursday Jacob joined representatives from Noosa Council and not-for-profit organisations at the inaugural Social Services Hub Day, a fortnightly onestop-shop initiative to provide services for people who are facing hardship. Services involved in the Hub Day include Sunny Street mobile health service, St Vincent de Paul, Red Cross Employment Services and Orange Sky Laundry. St Vincent de Paul's Maureen Farrington said it was difficult for many people in need to access services and they often required a number of services. Maureen said St Vinnies had seen an increase in the numbers of people seeking help. "They are all age groups. There's no pattern to who we see," she said.

"Women in their 50s living in cars is becoming a trend. They don't have the longterm financial back up that men do. They're becoming more visible, more receptive to help. "They understand we're friends. The cost of living is a big part of the issues. Affordable housing is so important." Maureen said simple things like listening to people's stories and knowing someone cares about them was so important to them. Red Cross employment services team leader Gary George said his aim at the Hub Day would be helping clients with their individual needs and giving them the confidence to go back to work. The Hub Day will open Tuesdays from 9.30am to 1.30pm from 16 October at Tait-Duke Community Cottage, Earl Street, Tewantin. ●

NEWS HAIL HERALDS STORM FRONT

MOBILE MEDICOS COME TO THE RESCUE OF HOMELESS

If you didn't have a 'what if?' plan at the start of Get Ready Queensland Week on Monday it may already be too late - as hail rained down on hinterland areas leaving the hills looking like snowfields. Noosa Council is urging residents to prepare for upcoming weather events. Council's local disaster coordinator Carl Billingham said the plan should include strategies for dealing with extended power outages, property damage and loss of water supply in the wake of bushfires, severe storms and other disasters. "It's also important to consider pets as well as strategies you can employ in the event family members can't get home during a disaster," he said. Mr Billingham said a Red Cross survey revealed less than half of Australians have thought about their risk of weather emergencies. For ideas and tips visit getready.qld.gov.au ●

BY MARGARET MACCOLL Just over two months ago medical doctor Nova Evans and nursing director Sonia Goodwin decided to make an impact in the community and that needed some thinking outside the box. "We thought of the people who needed the biggest impact and the homeless statistics were quite alarming," Dr Evans said. Gathering a multidisciplinary team together Sunny Street, a free, mobile volunteer health service, is now making a difference to the health of the most vulnerable people on the Sunshine Coast. Operating from Gympie to Brisbane CBD Sunny Street has brought together hundreds of volunteer doctors, nurses, allied health professionals and administration workers to operate two-hour clinics each week. "A lot of people are experiencing hardship and don't have Medicare cards. There's a stigma of drug use, substance abuse. There's accessibility problems. They don't have transport," Dr Evans said. "A lot have a background of trauma and have a distrust of systems. "We come to them in the environment that they're comfortable in. "It's wonderful, incredibly rewarding

Dr Nova Evans with client Eldon Morse. work. It's quite overwhelming at times. One of the surprises has been people's struggle with weight and nutrition, not having access to good food and kitchens." Wound care was another area found to be much needed among people who were

vulnerable or homeless. Dr Evans said they found people just making do - wrapping their wounds in toilet paper - and they were able to offer them professional care. "It's wonderful having time to spend with patients," she said. ●

COUNCIL SIGNS OFF ON ‘ADVERTISING’ BY MARGARET MACCOLL Some Noosa business owners are at odds with Noosa Council on their interpretation of advertising, art and window coverings as these items come under fire while Council reviews business signage across the Shire. Poolside Noosa adorned the many windows in its Noosaville business with photos of people swimming and cloudy skies which they consider to be window coverings providing shade and security. Most face a private carpark although a couple are roadside windows but are obscured from view by vegetation. Some of the photos have the name of the company in relatively small lettering, some do not. Council says all of these are advertising and have to go. Council's Development Assessment manager said "a window sign that promotes what a business sells, including the services it offers or associated activities is considered advertising signage and is subject to the same rules as other business signage". "Where a business owner wants to create shade or privacy inside a shop, Council recommends the use of awnings or window tint instead of window signage," the manager said. "Noosa's local laws and the planning scheme clearly set out the size, type and number of signs each business is allowed. "It's important all businesses play by the rules to make it fair for everyone and prevent a profusion of signage across the shire." The manager said in many cases

Council says Poolside Noosa's window coverings have to go. "advertising" be removed. The town planner determined the window images were not considered or intended to be an advertising device and with the removal of two (1.8sqm) fence signs and one (0.6sqm) rear building

businesses with non-complying signs were given 6 to 12 months to make the required changes. Poolside Noosa owner Glenys Kesby enlisted the services of a town planner to respond to Council's demands the

PICTURE FRAMING

sign the building would meet Noosa Plan requirements. Glenys said Council gave her three weeks notice to remove the window images and one officer told her had they been pictures of fruit and vegetables they would have been OK. ●

WAYWARD CHICK RETURNED BY MARGARET MACCOLL With a storm fast approaching time was running out for one plover chick that had plummeted down a storm water drain in Noosaville on Monday, before the extraordinary efforts of Noosa firefighters and wildlife carer William Watson prevailed and it was reunited with its mother. Resident Deborah Hamilton rang WILVOS wildlife rescue after persistent chirping led her to the drain where the stranded chick would certainly have perished. Its parents were franticly pacing and screeching above their offspring unable to reach it. When William arrived and found the drain cover too difficult to move he called on the firies and they raced to assist. Wedged firmly down, the drain cover took much leveraging, pushing and pulling but they weren't about to give up and finally it relented. After firefighters checked the air quality William was down the drain to bring up the little bundle of feathers. A quick once over and with everything appearing to be in working order the chick was carried to a vacant block away from the drain. Within seconds the parents returned and what sounded like a severe scolding ensued before the mum fluffed out its feathers and sat on it. "Best way to warm it up," William said. A Noosa Council officer also turned up a little late but prepared with heavy equipment to break out the chick. ●

"The award is a great acknowledgement for our local tourism industry and we thank all the Refresh Noosa members and suppliers for being part of this project since its launch at the beginning of the year," she said. "It is a long-term strategy to ensure we continue to offer a high quality, competitive and value experience to our customers, and to continue to grow and adapt in line with market expectations." ●

NEWS

ONE HEIFER IS BRINGING THE HOPE When the Noosa Bridge Club raised funds for the Farmers Drought Appeal last month the story from a farmer named Andrew, of Cunnamulla, who is known to one club member, brought home the real situation facing western Queensland farmers dealing with the extended drought. "We've been to the drying dam daily to pick up any animals that are left behind," Andrew said. "About two days after the last of the water disappeared, we went to the dam for one last check. In the middle of the mud was a shadow of a heifer and a woody young calf. We pulled them out of the quicksand like mud, washed their faces, and left them to rest on the bank of the dry dam, they were both almost unrecognisable because they were exhausted and covered in mud. That afternoon we went back to the dam with water and cottonseed, only to find they had got up and wandered off. I went back again and again and searched but couldn't find anything. No water in the paddock and a warm week later, l figure they had perished. I just couldn't find them. So just move on, don't get attached, don't think about it, just walk away and move on. This morning I went out to cut a bit of scrub and put out some cotton seed for the cattle.

They all came running across the paddock when they heard the chainsaw start - to get a feed. I noticed an animal standing over near the fence but wasn't coming in for a feed. After a while I went over to check it out and here she was. After more than a week, and no known water, the heifer had found her way down to the other cattle in the neighbouring paddock. It took little encouragement to get her through the gate and onto the water trough and some well deserved feed. If we can keep her alive, it will be about a year before she will get in calf and then another nine months before she has a calf.It doesn't add up. She's only one heifer, not particularly good looking or well bred, half covered in dry mud, but to us she's a star, an inspiration to just hang on, don't give up and just keep going." The bridge club raised $2250 for the drought appeal. Members who could not attend donated funds and Jan Park, a farmer's wife for 47 years in drought prone Goondiwindi, who also worked as a minister within The Uniting Church, created a quilt to raise funds as part of the silent auction. The club holds regular charity days with its next fundraising day in November. ●

LETTERS GOOD FOR SOME, NOT FOR OTHERS As I drive into Sunshine Beach on another newly minted sealed road I always shake my head. What a wonderful job the Noosa Council has done maintaining the infrastructure in Sunshine Beach over the years, in fact if you go to the council website www.noosa. qld.gov.au/work-in-progress there are nine roads in this suburb alone being resealed by the end of the year. Also take into account the total upgrade of the Sunshine Beach Village footpaths/landscaping and viewing platform, it’s a beautiful place to visit. Another win for all the millionaires and real estate in the area. If you live at Sunrise Beach you won’t be too surprise to learn that this blue collar suburb has no projects on the boil with Noosa Council, there isn’t even a mention that Sunrise Beach exists on the council projects website. It’s a shame that the Noosa Council doesn’t seem to take this area seriously and think about investing in it . I am sure the 1721 private dwellings* at Sunrise Beach who pay the same rates as the Sunshine Beach private dwellings would appreciate it. Take the Sunrise Beach shops as a prime example. Owned by Noosa Council, this complex is supposed to be serving the local community of three schools, the NAC ,tennis club and the population of 3415 local Sunrise beach people* . Ever since the very old food store closed down, businesses are going broke and the ones left are only just scraping by. There is no convenience here for Sunrise Beach residences, only a sorry site which has been badly managed over the years. As the council rushes in to try and lease this important local space, people are beginning to scratch their heads. Will it be more of the same or are the council actually going to do something this time to improve the shopping area? If only the council had a plan and budget in place to improve this local amenity, to attract the big players with perhaps a new building or coat of paint, playground, extra seating more street appeal, then maybe they may find someone brave enough to put in a modern convenience store and produce good returns for council. Something the locals can get behind and support. In the meantime I’ll be supporting the Sunrise Beach shops as much as possible and will be watching closely what Noosa Council finally does to improve this very important local amenity. Sunrise Beach Local

the Noosa Shire, continue his obvious campaign of misinformation about the Noosa Council? His letter (NT, 27 September) stated that the council didn’t consult on the rock wall, whereas Tourism Noosa, Noosa Residents and Ratepayers Association, Hasting Street Association, Qld Parks and Wildlife Service, Noosa and District Landcare, Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation, Friends of Noosa, Noosa Parks Association, and others, all had input over the course of several meetings. Also, Dom obviously doesn’t comprehend how councils manage their capital works. Works are scheduled and completed on a continuous basis. No council artificially tries to finish large projects just because it is the end of the financial year. What is important is that priority needs are met and are they progressing to schedule. The council has continually improved on both these fronts since de-amalgamation. Tony Wellington has urged financial caution regarding the TAFE issue, and all councillors have voted to further negotiations regarding its purchase. This seems a very reasonable approach. So much for fake news. Julia Walkden, Cooroy

BY MARGARET MACCOLL There were 35 possums, four gliders, a couple of reptiles and too many birds to count but definitely more than 100 at the Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre at Eumundi on the weekend as staff work around the clock to treat and rehabilitate injured and orphaned native animals. It's spring - the time when animals are on the move, baby birds abound and the centre is at its busiest. Manager Vicky Toomey said each year the number of animals treated increases by 300 to 400. Last year 2710 visited the centre. "It's most important we assess the animals and those that have a good chance of returning to the wild we give them every opportunity," she said. The centre operates from a house converted into an animal centre by Gillian and Colin Brownhill in 1997 and now operated by the RSPCA. Vicky said they were lucky to have the

Many mouths to feed. opportunity to carry on the legacy of the Brownhills and have since added to it, bringing in veterinary care which provides the most ill or injured a better chance of recovery, medicine for a quicker recovery and for those unable to be saved, a humane end to their suffering. The centre operates on a daily roster with a paid staff member in attendance 24 hours a day and a team of about 30 volunteers who contribute four hour shifts a week. Each animal that comes into the centre is assessed on arrival and given medical attention and every animal is assessed by a veterinarian who visits 2-3 times a week. Some animals such as flying foxes, micro-bats and eastern grey kangaroos are sent to specialist wildlife care and koalas go to Australia Zoo as they are better geared up for them. Vicky's role includes coordinating the care of wildlife between various wildlife cares, local veterinarians and zoos. About half the animals are victims of car hits or attacks by dogs or cats, then there are orphans whose mothers were hit by cars or attacked and juveniles, particularly birds, are big at the moment.

By manufacturing most of their products in store, Tony and Susanne Cruise from Noosa Screens and Curtains can offer products best suited for the harsh saline conditions of the coast. Since taking over Noosa Screens and Curtains in 2013, Tony has discovered many interstate and city suppliers do not have options for components truly resilient against corrosion. SMOCKING - AN ANCIENT ART CELEBRATED AFRESH Smocking - an interesting and ancient practice dating back to the Middle Ages is still pursued at Noosa Arts and Crafts (NACA). Smocking is an embroidery technique used to gather fabric so that it can stretch. Traditional English Smocking was found to be practical for form fitting and flexible garments. Its name derives from a farmer's work shirt called a smock. Before elastic, smocking was commonly used in cuffs, bodices, and necklines in garments where buttons were undesirable. Through the ages it has enhanced babies, children's and adult garments as well as accessories such as cushions, pillow cases and other articles - all styles of which can now be found in the NACA shop. The smocking group at Noosa Arts and Crafts at Wallace House is still smocking with both traditional and modern trends. Spokeswoman Tricia Bradford said smocking was a challenge. "Each article is 10 November at Kandanga Farm from 9am to 12.30pm. $10. Book by email to office@ countrynoosa.com.

Oval. With a couple of players missing this week, all the remaining team contributed to an excellent victory. Openers Reilly Carroll (35) and Angus Hetherington (35 no) got the team off to a flyer, with Nathan Howarth and Jaxon Smith also batting through to retire not out, all contributing to a total of 4 for 141. In reply, tight bowling from Josh Plant (1 for 8 off 5) and some sharp catching behind the stumps by Nathan Howarth, restricted Tewantin-Noosa to 118 all out. U12 Green hosted Tewantin-Noosa Storm at our new junior ground at Eumundi State School. Batting first, CooroyEumundi were restricted by good bowling to 108 all out. It could have been a lot less without the efforts of Zac Harrison (38) and Clancy Young (29 no), who batted together for the last wicket from the 13th to the 28th over. They both displayed great discipline and patience in achieving a respectable team total. Fine bowling from Clancy Young (3 for 7 off 5) and 2 wickets from Henry Rudkin built pressure, but good batting from Tewantin-Noosa got them home with 7 wickets down. No games were possible in Senior grades, as the Weather Gods weren't quite as accommodating to the older players!

As the 2018 cricket season finally got under way, the Weather Gods smiled on Cooroy-Eumundi Cricket Club, as they managed to complete all junior matches prior to the rain rolling in. Better than that, they managed to notch up first round victories in the U15, U13 and U12 age groups, with only one narrow 8 run loss in the other U12 match. The U15's were at home to Flinders on the beautifully prepared turf of Sel Bonnel Oval. Bowling first, Cooroy-Eumundi restricted Flinders to 131 with great bowling from Brayden Forrest (4 for 11 off 4), and Lachie Harrison (3 for 13 off 5). In reply, Cooroy-Eumundi were 7 for 153 after their 30 overs, with Ryan Christensen hitting a fine 40, and Oscar Long 34. The boys looked good, and are looking forward to a successful season. In U13's, Yandina chose to bat first and posted a strong total of 157 runs. In the field, Eric Mahe stunned the Yandina team and the spectators with a side-on direct hit run out, from the out field. Cooroy's run chase got off to a shakey start until Marcus Morley and Zac Murray settled in and the runs began to flow. Following this partnership, Gus Gunton (9) and Joe Murray (retired 30 no) combined to get the run chase seriously underway. Marcus (30 no) and Zac (55 no) returned to the crease and remained unbeaten to close out the game for Cooroy with a final total of 5/167. NOOSA TODAY 31

LIFE OF BRINE

PHIL JARRATT

GETTING TO THE POINT - A SURF STORY Last week I wrote about why we travel, so I suppose this week I'd better write about why we come home, since that's where we'll be by the time you read this. As I write, however, I'm still in the throes of extracting ourselves from our adopted home, cleaning up, paying bills incurred around the 'hood, catching up for last drinks (for this season anyway) with friends, and clocking in lastminute meetings or Skypes on the ongoing projects. But then I looked at the swell map and saw the planets aligning for my favourite lefthander down the coast. In this part of the world during the dry season you look for the low points in the continual battering of swell, rather than the high. Or you do if you're my age, anyway. The direction was right and the swell's slow rise looked like it would deliver long-lining shoulder high waves the first morning and head-high to overhead the next, accompanied by sunny weather and light winds. Perfect. Time for one last surf adventure to see off the season. Travelling with friends who'd not experienced the many wonders of Johnny Blundstone's Bali Eco Stay, we made a last-minute decision to head down the coast a day early, and treat ourselves to the full garden-to-plate gastronomic heaven. Getting to Johnny's is the classic case of heaven and hell in one day on the isle of the gods. (Someone should write a book about that!) Hell comes first, as hundreds of overladen transports come teetering towards you as they overtake each other on the single lane inter-island trunk route, while pre-teen children on motor scooters weave in and out of the traffic while texting each other. Then we turn off the highway and climb into the lush rice-fields of the foothills, then steadily climb along a narrow and crumbling road that drops off to gorges on either side. But as the road gets worse, everything gets better. We're on our way to heaven. You've read here before about former Noosa waiter Johnny and the paradise he and wife Kath have created on the slopes of Mount Batukaru, Bali's second highest volcano, but suffice it to say that I never tire of breathing the cool, clear air, of eating the deliciously-prepared produce of the land, and of turning off all the lights before bed and watching the fireflies dance above the ricefields. Breakfast was so good that we were in

danger of missing the high tide at the point, but some skillful downhill racing on the part of our travel companion Michael got us there alive if a little shaken, and with several hours still to run out. We hit the water quickly and enjoyed a relatively uncrowded hour or so before the tell-tale clumps of rock began to appear above the waterline. The little Muslim fishing village that houses the point has changed little since I first visited in the 1970s, but progress, if such it is, is on the way. Our preferred hotel, right on the point, had no rooms left, so we are staying across the street at a newlyrenovated place that once was a bunch of shabby little rooms behind a high wall that blocked any view of the surf. Last week we

were led past a gorgeous garden with a huge pool at its centre, to spacious suites looking straight out over the waves and the sunset. If they had a wine list and could make coffee, they'd really give their neighbour a run for the money. As the tide started to rise again in the late afternoon, I paddled out and surfed until dark, as the water glassed off and took on the pink and purple hues of the sun setting hazily and lazily over the horizon. I've always thought dusk was the best time of day to surf, nowhere more so than here. And there's nothing quite like dropping your board and grabbing a cold beer as the last light of the day disappears. The swell charts had it right. Dawn

revealed an increased swell, with only a few surfers already on it. We paddled out just before the top of the tide and got the best conditions of the day, glassy and lined up from point to rocky shore. When we finally came in I ached all over and my feet were cut to ribbons from the sharp rocks, but I felt exhilarated beyond belief. Not because our pleasant surf sessions were world beaters, but because 44 years on I could still experience what I experienced back then. The point has changed, I've changed, but where it matters, we're just the same. I can come home happy now, delighted to see family and friends. A season has ended, another one begins. ●

MEDAL WIN FOR OUR LANA NOOSA PLAYERS MAKE IT BY RON LANE

For Lana Rogers last year's Coolangatta Gold had been a bitter disappointment. "I started my preparation too late and didn't perform as I should of. But this year I went in with a completely different approach and it certainly paid off." Classed as an Endurance Event it is made up of the following legs: the ski is 23k, run 2.1 k, swim 3.5k, board 6.1k, and the second run and last leg is 7.1. Total 41.8K Regarding her performance she talked me through the event. "Going into the race I was pretty relaxed and planned (mentally) to take one leg at a time. The ski leg was a bit down wind and heading towards Miami. By the time the 23km was finished I was 4th and the leaders had 2 minutes on me; I was happy with this but got in a bit of a panic when I dropped behind the leaders. However when I got into the next leg, the swim, I immediately calmed down as this was my strongest. I made up two places and was able to achieve this because of my strong kick; as a result I clocked the fastest time of the day for this leg. When I started the board Danielle McKenzie was right on my toes. The board for me was the worst as we had heavy winds that we were paddling into. Also I missed the gates cans at Burleigh and had to turn back 75 mts: I finished equal with Danielle. During the last run I was excited

as I had done a lot of running during my 16 weeks (program) but it didn't go to plan as I suddenly started to cramp, just 2 kl into the run and after passing McKenzie; this caused me to stop (for a short time). Overall

it was a close race and I couldn't be happier finishing on the podium in such a top field.'' The determination and courage of this young lady, proudly one of our people, is to be admired. ●

CRICKET SEASON BEGINS RANDALL WOODLEY

Rain interrupted first day of the season, saw all the local TNT cricket teams take the field with each of them batting first. The day finished with every one of them in positions that can be converted into wins next Saturday, if they bowl and field to their potentials. FIRSTS - The team traveled to Nambour to play their opening match. There is a very positive vibe about the team this season and on paper, it appears this could be one of the strongest group of players for many years, especially in the bowling ranks. Before the match, TNT First Grade numbered caps were presented to debutants, Scott Aufderheide, Tom Freshwater and teenager Sam Baker by previous premiership players. After losing the toss, the TNT boys were sent into bat in overcast conditions. Openers, Tristan Griffin and Chris Wright played patiently against a top-quality attack and when rain stopped play after 6 overs the score was 0-6. However, after a three-hour rain delay, both openers lost their wickets and it was left to the experienced pair of Jarrod Officer (41) and Andrew Kratzmann (30 no) to rescue the innings. Both their scores would have been higher except for the wet outfield. Between them, they scored 15 twos which on a dry day, most would have been fours. After Jarrod was dismissed, teenager Sam Baker came to the crease and stayed there until rain finished the day at about 3pm with the score at 3 for 87 after 29 overs. Sam looked solid and was 6 no at close. Next week the TNT will need to score quick runs and then put the pressure on the Nambour batsmen with their strong bowling ranks. SECONDS - The team led by new skipper, Robbie Payton were at home at Read Park to play Nambour. Rain delayed the start but on winning the toss the TNT boys batted first. A number of the players started well but no noosatoday.com.au

Three Noosa players have been chosen for the Queensland U19 Men's Softball squad after competing in the State Championships at Tewantin over the weekend. Dylan Todd, William Todd and Riley Murrihy will go into camp with the squad at the end of October where the Queensland team will be chosen to compete at national titles in Blacktown, NSW in January. Noosa hosted the State titles from 5-7 October, with 8 Queensland teams competing. Logan City who were undefeated throughout the titles won the grand final, defeating Caboolture 4-2. Noosa District Softball Association president Richard Wakeham said the young Noosa team played well. "Several of our players were competing in the Under 19 age group for the first time and will be back better than ever next year," Richard said. "It's been a great experience for them." Highlights included five home runs from Riley Murrihy, two from Callum Thiess and one from Dylan Todd, while Charles Schefe did well as catcher. "We're really proud of the entire Noosa team," Richard said. Queensland's best under 19 men's softballers competed at the championships, including members of the Australian team who recently won the World Championship in Canada, along with players from the NZ team. Noosa's summer softball season starts on Saturday 13 October with competition for boys and girls in under 13, under 15 and under 17 age groups, along with a senior men's competition and social softball for men and women. Little League for boys and girls from 4-10 years of age teaches basic ball and batting skills. Sign-on at the Noosa District Softball Association grounds at 31 Butler Street, Tewantin (off Cooroy-Noosa Rd) this Wednesday 10 October from 3.30-5pm or search for 'Noosa softball' online. ●

TNT teenage batsman, Sam Baker looking solid against Nambour last Saturday. one was able to post a sizeable score. Adam Curry top scored with 30 but the team will need to convert these starts to bigger scores if they are to remain competitive through the season. At stumps the home team were 8 for 153. Next Saturday the team needs to add 30 or 40 more runs which will hopefully set them up for a good total to bowl at and bring home a win. THIRDS - were away at Coolum. The pitch looked good and new captain Jason Toohey made the correct call and decided to bat. After a steady start a couple of quick wickets saw both openers out at 2-24. While not losing any game time, light rain did see the pitch get a bit slippery and an unlucky loss of footing saw Steve Gallagher out at the score on 3-45. Sam Forrest and Jason Toohey then combined for a great 96 run partnership with Sam dismissed for 68 just before the break. Will Gear then joined the skipper for another solid partnership of 84 before he was dismissed for 43 chasing some quick runs. Toohey was eventually out for a very patient 64. TNT finished with 9-231

and are set up well to push for victory next week. FOURTHS - Playing Yandina at Dale Officer Oval, the TNT team were asked to bat on a pitch that had balls sticking and popping, giving the early batsmen some challenges and resulting in a few lost wickets to have the home team 3-19 at drinks. Justin Talbot and Shane Gesell managed to stem the fall of wickets and put on a 54 run partnership before Gesell was bowled for 29. A brief shower had the covers on for an early lunch. Max Cooper joined Talbot to combine for a further 37 before Talbot fell on 53 with the score 5-110. A handy knock of 32 by Joe Jurisevic added some respectability to the final score of 157. Bad light stopped play early. Some work to do by the bowlers next week to ensure first innings points for the team. WOMENS CRICKET The TNT women's team will play their first match of the Sunshine Coast competition at Read Park, next Sunday 14th October. ●

AND IT’S BRONZE TO LANA In last weekend's Coolangatta Gold (long course endurance) Noosa's Lana Rogers competing in the Women's Open Elite Event won the bronze medal. To achieve this after winning the Open Iron Woman's Championship of Australia (short course event) is indeed a remarkable achievement. Also during the Coolangatta Gold two of our members one from Noosa and one from Sunshine Beach combined to make competition history. Competiting in the U/19 category Tex Dixon Noosa and Zachary Bromage Sunshine Beach won the gold medal. What made this an historic occasion was the fact that this two man team competed against other teams each consisting of four members; meaning that Tex and Zachery had to double up on events. Early in the day they decided that regardless of this they would compete: the race consisted of a10.5 ski leg, 2kl swim, 3kl board leg and a 5.5kl run. For the occasion Tex did the ski and board legs and Zachary the swim and the run. And not only did they win but also recorded the fastest overall time of the day, for both U/19 and open men's events. In beating all other teams from both Queensland and N.S.W they beat the best the states had to offer. This has been a truly outstanding performance. However when they stepped up on the dais to collect their gold medals they were not alone for standing in second place to

For Noosa Masters the Saturday Short Course Event saw a silver medal win to the Noosa Girls team and on Sunday the Long Course a bronze medal to the Divorcees. All in all a great result for both Noosa and Sunshine Beach. that our entire project is transparent to all members." Crossing his fingers and laughing Redwood remarked, "You could say that we are aiming for something quirky. A building that will give us an inner- city lane way bar feeling, something modern but will still have the surf club character. After some thirty years in this establishment it is time to modernize." We wish them well. Last Sunday it was another great day for the newly formed Peregian Nippers with 100 plus in attendance. Good luck to all involved. ●

''The process that we had in place to name the successful applicant was very thorougher,'' said Redwood. There were 22 submissions and this was then reduced to 10. "We conducted interviews and visited building sites, reduced the number to five then made our final decision. Now the successful builder has been named we will hold a club meeting where all aspects of the project will be fully explained: cost, dates for commencement and arrangements to cover storage and care of our equipment once the existing building has been demolished. RAIN BRINGS ON FISH - AND ANGLERS With the recent weather events it is quite obvious that offshore anglers have been a little challenged when it comes to getting outside. Most anglers have been getting out early to try and beat the breezes that has been springing up mid-morning. Sunshine Reef has still been producing the odd mackerel. It has also been a great spot for snapper, venus tusk fish, Maori cod, pearl perch, and tuna. The key to getting onto tuna is to cast your lure to the edges of the schools rather than right into the middle. The fish are taking a range of metal slugs on the cast. For the larger boats that have headed a little further afield, Double Island has still been fishing well for long tail tuna, gold spot cod, moses perch, sweetlip, pearl perch and good sized venus tusk fish. The Barwon Banks have also fished well for snapper, venus tusk fish, squire, hussar, Maori cod, red throat emperor, gold band snapper and the odd red emperor. On the Beaches: the odd tailor was on the bite in the gutters around Sunshine Beach on the morning tide over the last week. Flathead have also been in the gutters taking frog mouth pilchards on gang hooks, as well as fresh mullet strips. Dart are still spread all along the beaches with the top of the tide the most productive. Great fun for the kids! Great sized whiting have been coming from the beaches near the river mouths. Live worms, pippies and peeled prawns have been the bait of choice. noosatoday.com.au

In the river: with the water starting to colour up after the rains, the run-in tide has been the most productive. Whiting have been in particularly good numbers with the amount of bait in the river. As whiting are predominantly bottom feeders and with the amount of water moving through the system at the moment there is good amount of food for them to feed on. Trevally are also on the chew, and Woods Bays have been full of them! Schools of bait fish are regularly chased around by hungry trevally and are easily spotted by looking for splashes on the surface. Small surface popper and surface walkers have been doing most of the damage. Soft plastics imitating a prawn seem to be a very popular option at the moment as there are plenty of prawns starting to run. For the night angler creeping quietly around structures like Tewantin Harbor and the structures around the sound should see you tangling with mangrove jack. Fishing a slow rolled paddle vibes around the deep holes in the river will also give you a really good chance of tangling with one of these prized fish. If you love your bait then give free floating baits like frog mouth pillies, live poddy mullet, herring, whitebait and fresh mullet strips a go. For the crabbers the crabs are up and walking after the rains, try the deeper sections near mangroves. Of course the best bait is mullet. So on behalf of Jack Mangrove, best of luck on your fishing adventures! ●
