HOME OF THE FUTURE OPEN By Narelle Coulter ONE of Victoria’s first zero emission display homes was officially opened in Officer’s Timbertop Estate on Tuesday 2 October. The home was built by SJD Homes in collaboration with Curtain University, the CSIRO, Sustainability Victoria, SECCA and developer Parklea. Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change Lily D’Ambrosio cut a ribbon to officially launch the 7.3 star rated display. The display is part of SJD’s Z-Range. ZRange upgrades include double glazing to all windows, quality insulation, solar hot water, a 5 kw solar roof system, draft sealed exhaust fans and an upgraded five star energy rated ducted heating unit. SJD Homes sales manager Rod Fitzsimmons said the upgrades needed to produce a zero emissions home would cost buyers roughly $5000. “By using the northerly aspect and making a few changes, we have been able to make this home a zero emissions home and that’s something SJD has been very passionate about,“ Mr Fitzsimmons said. “A lot of the time in the past people were more interested in the 40 millimetre stone waterfall edging or the $15,000 of Miele appliances. That is now changing. With the massive increase in the cost of living people are really starting to change their attitude. “ We are excited that we are going to be building better homes. They may cost a bit more than standard, but if it is done smartly and correctly with the right research you can actually do it very well.“ Doctor Josh Byrne from Curtain University leads a national research project into zero energy housing. “Zero energy housing is about how we can design homes to be more efficient through looking at orientation, improved
