MORE TO LOVE The editor’s desk I paid a visit to the Warwick Aerodrome for this week's cover story (see pages 4-5) and it was a real eye-opener. There's been a considerable amount of activity and development at the Aerodrome in recent years and it may surprise readers to know a few people call it their permanent home. Warwick's Aerodrome is a true regional aviation hub and as well as the permanent residents there are plenty of folk from outside the region who house their recreational aircraft out at Massie and are regular visitors. The Aerodrome turns 60 this month and it was a pleasure to catch up with Dr Phil Goyne, president of the Queensland Recreational Aircraft Association/Warwick Aero Club. The group has planning well in hand for the anniversary celebrations on Saturday 3 November and the event will further recognise the efforts of the volunteers who cleared the land for the Aerodrome and established the runway and other facilities in the 1950s. The Aerodrome is yet another valuable local facility which was established and is maintained by a loyal group of stalwarts who volunteer their time, energy and resources - a true community effort, and asset.

Thoroughbred Breeders Queensland Association President Basil Nolan says he is deeply disappointed by Queensland Treasurer Jackie Trad's decision not to provide income to the racing industry from the new Point of Consumption tax. The PoC came into effect on Monday 1 October, with all bets in Queensland being taxed 15%. It's expected to raise almost $70 million in the first year alone. "In NSW and Victoria the revenue from this tax is reinvested in the racing industry and that was what Racing Queensland and the TBQA had been lobbying the Queensland Government for - or even a significant proportion of the 15% to be returned to the industry," Mr Nolan, of Raheen Stud at Goomburra north of Warwick, said last week. "Unfortunately, our efforts fell on deaf ears. "Instead of enabling the racing industry to become self-sufficient and sustainable, the State Government will simply cover a reimbursement for Racing Queensland to the TAB for its racing fees bill and write off RQ's $17.8 million debt. "RQ will also receive $20 million grant this financial year to be used on two new racing facilities in harness racing and greyhound tracks. "That's a one-off of less than $40 million dollars coming back to the industry which will be making a minimum $70 million per year for the Government. "A $20 million infrastructure grant for the dogs and trots is not going to assist the thoroughbred industry which is the most important gambling medium for the State. "What about a financial commitment moving forward? Is the Government simply planning to take this $70 million each year and put it in their coffers? Where is this money going to be distributed?" Mr Nolan said the tax is "a whole new revenue stream and will be generated solely from the racing industry". "It is only common sense that some of this revenue be returned to the industry to ensure that racing is viable and sustainable in Queensland," he said. ●

Warwick detectives are still investigating the serious assault of a woman in the Glennie Heights area of Warwick on the evening of Tuesday 2 October. Last week they released a 'comfit' image of a man who may be able to assist with their investigations (pictured). A spokesman for the Warwick Police Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB) told the Free Times at time of printing this week a "good amount" of information had been received from the public and investigations were continuing. The victim of the assault stopped on the side of the road in Rose Street at around 6.15pm on the day in question when her vehicle, a white 1998 Nissan Patrol, broke down. A man driving a white utility stopped in front of her vehicle and offered to help. They worked under the bonnet of her vehicle for a short period of time before the

investigating sexual assault. The man fled in his vehicle - a white single cab utility with silver tray back and sides. He has been described as Caucasian, aged between 30 to 40, with a chubby build, short dark hair and a full dark beard and was approximately 175cm tall. He was wearing a dark blue tradie shirt with sleeves rolled up, matching shorts and tradie-style boots. The woman was treated at Warwick Hospital that evening and later released. The assault occurred on the left-hand side of Rose Street about 50 metres past the intersection with Horsman Road, just south of the Warwick Golf Course. Anyone who may have noticed the vehicles on Rose Street or has any information which could assist with police investigations is urged to contact the Warwick Police Station on 4660 4444 or call Crime Stoppers anonymously on 1800 300 000. ●

A

passion for aviation drove a band of volunteers to establish Warwick's Massie Aerodrome almost 60 years ago to the day - and their efforts will be celebrated at an upcoming anniversary event in the next few weeks. The Aerodrome was built over three years, beginning in 1955, and was officially commissioned on 26 October 1958. Due to a clash with the Warwick Rodeo weekend the Aerodrome's 60th birthday commemorations will take place a week later, on Saturday 3 November - but Phil Goyne reckons it's near enough. Phil has been a stalwart of local aviation and the Queensland Recreational Aircraft Association/Warwick Aero Club and currently serves as its president, having previously held the role of secretary for 20-

plus years. Bob Keogh, also known for his long and strong involvement with the Southern Downs Steam Railway, is the current patron. Phil and other members have been busy preparing for the 60th anniversary, including commissioning the making of commemorative plaques to adorn a new sandstone plinth outside the Aerodrome's terminal. Local aviation legends like Gus Mauch will be front of mind on November 3, along with the many volunteers who laboured to clear the scrub on the Aerodrome block at Massie, which had previously been part of Toolburra Station. They constructed a gravel runway - which was eventually sealed in 2003 and the first basic buildings on the site, which today is home to a thriving aviation community, including several enthusiasts who live permanently on the Aerodrome in

their 'hangar-homes'. Indeed, building of new hangar and living and other facilities at Massie has taken a sharp upward curve in recent years and the Aerodrome is well-established as a regional aviation hub, utilised by locals and out-of-town recreational aviators alike. Phil Goyne - who along with wife Mary has clocked up around 650 flying hours on trips across the length and breadth of Australia - said the former Warwick City council called a public meeting in the mid50s to gauge the interest in establishing an aerodrome in the Warwick area. "It was a real community effort," Phil told the Free Times. "We think it's important to recognise the contribution of those first volunteers - I'd really like to put out a call to their descendants to come along and join us on November 3, and perhaps to say a few words." Phil's own interest in flying began in

the mid-1960s when he spent a year in Warwick after completing tertiary studies in agriculture and a mate offered to take him up in his light aircraft. Phil - whose father at one time worked for aviation pioneer Charles Kingsford Smith - was hooked and he began taking flying lessons, at that time provided by the Darling Downs Aero Club. The interest endured while pursuing a career in agricultural science in other places, including three years in the US where he completed his doctorate. The Goynes re-settled in Warwick in 1984 and Phil's passion for aviation and involvement with the aerodrome resumed. Since then Phil Goyne has seen the growth of Warwick's aviation facilities and community and along with other Aerodrome users is upbeat about its future. ●

A SECOND HOME ... Likewise upbeat about Warwick's Aerodrome are Toowoomba couple Danny and Lyn McCartin. The pair operate an earthmoving and construction training business based in the Garden City, but most weekends - and at times through the week - they can be found at their self-described "second home" near the runway at Massie. Their hangar houses three aircraft including a fabled Tiger Moth - and sits alongside their comfortable living quarters. "We love it out here - we've just kept adding to what we have here over the last seven or eight years," Lyn said. "We've been doing some landscaping of late - it's just so peaceful, a great place to be." Not only is the Aerodrome a place of 'R&R' for the McCartins, it's also convenient from a business perspective, with Danny doing a lot of travelling around Queensland. "If I want to get to Caloundra, let's say, it's actually cheaper and quicker to drive down here from Toowoomba and then fly

up myself," he said. "It takes over three hours in a vehicle from here it's about 30 minutes." ●

ABOUT THE AERODROME · The Aerodrome is also the home of the Warwick Gliding Club, whose active members are at Massie - just north-west of Warwick off the Allora back road - every other weekend · The Aerodrome is also a base for RAAF cadets, who can be found there most school holidays · As well as locals, aviation enthusiasts from across South East Queensland - including Brisbane, the Gold Coast and Toowoomba - base their recreational aircraft at Massie · The Aerodrome has a number of permanent residents, with some hangar/ home sites privately owned and others leased from the council Enquiries about the anniversary celebrations on Saturday 3 November to Dr Phil Goyne on 0417 761 584. ●

WIND IN THE HAIR ... Danny McCartin is scheduled to take his 1940 Tiger Moth on a flyover above Warwick as part of Remembrance Day centenary commemorations this year - on Saturday 11 November - weather permitting. More than 200 Tiger Moths were built for pilot training purposes by the RAAF at Mascot Airport in Sydney - with the engines built by General Motors-Holden. Danny's 'Moth' - a birthday present from wife Lyn a few years ago - has had a few owners, including his own brother in the early 1980s. The engine and wings have since been re-built, with Danny having clocked up around 36 flying hours at the controls. The Tiger Moth - which is started with a hand-spin of the propeller - can reach a speed of 155 knots. It can make around two-and-a-quarter hours of flight time on a tank of 94-octane (maximum) fuel, and has a reserve tank. ●

RADICAL WATER MEASURES ON TABLE BY JEREMY SOLLARS Southern Downs councillors appear to have baulked at a suggestion by council officers that a 'premium' rate for town water should be paid by residents who use in excess of the council's consumption targets. A report to the September council meeting by the council's Technical Officer Water and Wastewater suggested councillors consider not only a 'premium' rate but also replace existing residential water meters with digital 'smart' meters - connected to a central council IT platform - which would enable the council to monitor water use on a house-by-house and daily basis. As urban water supplies continue to drop across both the Warwick and Stanthorpe regions councillors at last month's meeting did vote in favour of requiring businesses which use more than 10 megalitres (ML) of water a year to submit a 'Water Efficiency Management Plan' to the council. They also voted in favour of moving to high urban residential water restrictions from Thursday 1 November. The officer's report states that with town water meter readings complete "residential high water users will be contacted to discuss water restrictions", but does not suggest or note any action the council might take. "No enforcement action has been

The Condamine River near the John Dee Abattoir last week. taken against non-compliant water users," the report states. "At present, SDRC does not have smart meters which allow access to information on daily current water usage per property. "Consideration should be given to installing smart meters and to the possibility of charging a premium rate for water used in excess of the water restriction targets. "Water restrictions are aimed at

residential water users; consideration should be given to promote water efficiency with the non-residential customers." Non-residential customers would include vehicle washing businesses, vehicle washing associated with motor dealerships, food transport vehicles, building construction and development, market gardens and commercial nurseries and travellers' accommodation.

The report to councillors also states there are 51 "raw water connections" across the region. "These connections are used both for business use (primary production) and domestic use," the report states. "The agreements for connection to Leslie Dam and Storm King Dam need to be examined and reviewed as they are out of date. "The agreements in place for Connolly Dam raw water can allow

WATCH YOUR OUTDOOR USE ... The council is urging residents to take note of changed times for outdoor town water use under the current water restrictions. As of Monday 1 October outdoor water use times changed to 6am to 8am and 5pm to 7pm on each property's allocated day. A property's allocated day is determined by the street address, not unit number - if the address is Unit 3/22 Walker St, the property would be allocated as an even number. Outdoor water use is permitted between the above times for •฀Odd฀house฀number/no฀house฀ number - On odd calendar dates only •฀Even฀house฀numbers฀-฀On฀even฀ calendar dates only The current target water consumption per person per day on the Southern Downs is 200 litres. Under high water restrictions, due to take effect on November 1, this target will drop to 170 litres per person per day, or approximately 19 household buckets.

Queensland Government water laws allow the council, as a 'water service provider", to direct certain customers such as commercial and industrial water users using over 10ML per annum - to prepare a Water Efficiency Management Plan or WEMP. Last month's report to councillors states there are seven businesses in Warwick and two in Stanthorpe that used more than 10ML in the last 12 months. "The large water users in Warwick are Polocrosse (who should commence using raw water soon), John Dee, Grove Juice, Wickham Freight, Coachman's Inn, Riverina, Frasers, and the Saleyards," the report states. "Stanthorpe's high water users are both accommodation providers, Top

of the Town Caravan Park and Murray Gardens. "A new position of Sustainability Officer was recently advertised and it is anticipated that once the role is filled, work will commence with high water business users to carry out water audits and assist with the development of WEMP." ●

PRIME RESULTS IN LAMB COMPETITION BY JEREMY SOLLARS Top lamb producers from around the region and beyond saw the efforts of their hard work rewarded with the winners of the 2018 Warwick Show and Rodeo Society Prime Lamb Carcass competition announced last Saturday 6 October. More than 80 lambs were entered in this year's 'hook' competition and the results impressed judge Brett Shelley, who had the tough task of choosing the winners at Carey Brothers Abattoir at Yangan late last week. Millmerran Dorper producers David and Robbie Curtis of Bellevue Grazing Company came away with the Champion and Reserve Champion Pens of Carcass Lambs and said the hook competition was always a good opportunity to learn more about what butchers and their customers are looking for when it comes to lamb for the domestic trade. "We don't often get to see ours on the hook so it's a learning opportunity for us, at the business end of the process, to look at things like fat-set," David told the Free Times. "This is a really well-run competition, particularly with the curfew on weigh-in, it means everyone's basically on an even keel. "The Dorper is proving its worth as a breed in the drought and we're seeing widespread acceptance of them - they produce a beautiful, nuggetty little carcass and we're really pleased with how we did in the competition this year."

Robbie and David Curtis of Bellevue Grazing Co at Millmerran took out a swag of Prime Lamb awards this year.

With daughter Sophie, The Curtis' currently run around 3000 Dorpers and White Dorpers on their property and experiment with the grain ration fed to finish their lambs. They held a stud ram sale in midSeptember at which 119 rams were snapped up and are holding up in the drought, despite having only received around five inches of rain over the last 12 months. David is a qualified Dorper and White Dorper Judge and Inspector, successfully completing his final Judge's exam in Britstown, South Africa, in 2010. He was one of two Australians who

passed that exam, making them the first two fully-qualified Australian Dorper Inspectors. Closer to home, long-time competitor Warren Schelbach from Sandy Creek west of Warwick was chuffed to win the Reserve Champion Single Carcass Lamb, which was finished on oats. Warren and wife Wendy currently run about 250 ewes. Brett Shelley was the successful tenderer for the lambs in this year's competition. Prime Lamb officials and entrants - and local media representatives - enjoyed a delicious barbecue lunch of lamb chops and

An interesting talk on the future of libraries in Queensland was presented by Sylvia Swalling from Ipswich Libraries on Monday in the Civic Centre. Much of what she had to say about the Ipswich situation was not very relevant to the question of whether a new Library building is necessary for Stanthorpe. We already have an attractive, welcoming library, well patronized. Although our current library apparently does not meet the guidelines in terms of size for our population, the only real reason for an upgrade would be need. Council officers have indicated that grants would be available for funding a new building and that Council would not be borrowing any money. However many grants have a co-contribution requirement and it could well be that Council would have to find 40-50% of the money from Council coffers, money which might more profitably be spent elsewhere. In terms of a library for the future, some emphasis was placed on digital technology and multi-media spaces. There is merit in considering provision for this, but given that there are other alternative spaces which could be looked at, and that the running of such space would require dedicated personnel with respect to maintaining the equipment as well as support for the activities, it does not seem a sufficient need for a new library building. Similarly the

suggested need for meeting rooms can be met elsewhere for example within the Civic Centre. Ipswich libraries were focussing on encouraging more people to use library facilities through use of outreach programmes, and easier access for checking library materials in and out. Our library is central, has easy parking and access and most people need to come into Stanthorpe at some time to access services, so there is little incentive to provide these additional services. However longer opening hours, especially on the weekend and into the evening would provide more access. This of course comes at a cost regardless of whether it is a new building or not. One very valid point was that librarians' time can be more properly used if they did not have to physically check library materials in and out. Self service check outs and returns available in many libraries would address this concern and would be able to be placed in the existing library. It also needs to be remembered that Library users have access to all the resources of the other libraries in the Southern Downs Council region. Council will be considering the future of the Stanthorpe library and the needs of the Art Gallery at their next Council meeting. From the information so far made available, it would seem there is no need for a new library building. Barbara Bowyer Stanthorpe

A FRIEND AND MENTOR TO MANY Local cattle identity Pat Flynn lost a courageous battle with cancer on Saturday 29 September. Pat was laid to rest at the Warwick Lawn Cemetery last Friday afternoon, with some of his beloved 'Droughties' there to honour him. The following is an extract of the eulogy given at Pat's funeral by Emma Thompson...

PAT'S LEGACY

Pat employment as a strapper - later leading to Pat's involvement as a strapper for the New Zealand show jumping team when they toured Australia. On the 30th June 1973, Pat married the mother of his children, Gloria 'Bulmer' Flynn. Over many years Pat and Gloria shared precious memories and cherished moments with the company of their three sons - Jason, Darren and Tim. In later years, Pat and Gloria welcomed the arrival of three beautiful grandchildren Toby, Hannah and McKenzie, children to Daren and Melissa. Soon after marrying, Pat and Gloria moved to Kentucky Station south of Grafton with their first-born, Jason. During this time, Pat and Gloria welcomed the birth of their second son Darren. Other employment highlights

Angus cattle to Beef Week in Rockhampton. But Pat believed the only breed docile enough to be around students was the Droughtmaster breed. After thought and planning, Pat approached the Rowe Family during Beef Week to ask if they would consider sending cattle to Warwick SHS for the students to show - this marked the commencement of the Warwick SHS Droughtmaster stud. Over the years of working with young people and the Droughtmaster breed, Pat assisted and guided many people to establish their own cattle studs. Pat was also an avid horseman, breeding and racing many successful thoroughbreds, a competitive campdrafter, a judge and and competitor in horse classes at agricultural shows, teaching youth at many pony club associations and even topped yearling sales when managing horse studs. Sadly, in 2016, Pat was diagnosed with cancer and he was advised to retire from full-time employment. During this time, Pat and Emma Thompson strengthened their friendship by maintaining a loving home and a Droughtmaster stud (Auzdown Droughtmasters) together. Although very sick, Pat set and achieved a goal of showing his own Droughtmaster cattle at Ekka 2017 and Beef Week 2018. Pat's passing is a significant loss to the agriculture industry - however, his legacy will be survived by the youth he mentored over many years. As Pat would say, "You are a good, poor bugger! By Christ it was helish'n good knowing you!" â—?

Patrick Michael Flynn was born on the 18th March 1948. First child born to parents Denis and Alice Flynn, Tenterfield. Brother to Neville and Jeffery. Raised on the family property, Pat gained a passion for the land and livestock through cherished moments working with black cattle, horses and his father Denis. Pat's kind nature and ability to respect and accommodate all people, was instilled by his loving mother Alice. Pat often spoke fondly of his mother, stating she was a beautiful person, who was loved dearly by all. Pat attended the St Joseph primary school and later transferred to the State High School. Midway through secondary school, after many incidents where a ruler found Pat's knuckles, Pat decided school was not his thing. With this decision made, during one detention, Pat climbed out of the school window and rode his horse home to start paid employment the next day. Pat tried his hand as a butcher and meat worker, however, his ability and interest for the land found Pat working for Midkin Station in 1962. Shortly after gaining station work, wellknown competitive show jumper John Kelly noticed Pat's capability with horses, offering

included working for Humberg Stud at Tabulam and with Mrs Headley of Coolabah Thoroughbred Stud, Beaudesert. During this time Pat's third son Tim was born. In 1982 Pat was employed by BoysTown as a farm hand, a venture contributing to his fourdecade commitment with the Droughtmaster Cattle Society, through the assistance of a commercial operation and stud herd. During employment with BoysTown, Pat was approached by respected and cherished friend and then employer, Brother Phillip, to prepare cattle for shows. Pat travelled many miles with the boys of BoysTown attending shows and sales. Pat was confident a Droughtmaster Stud would instil responsibility and accountability into the boys of BoysTown by creating a rewarding hobby that would generate life-changing opportunities for them. Pat's involvement with BoysTown ended in 1992 when the home was shut down. It was then Pat gained employment with Talgai Droughtmaster Stud and continued to show Droughtmaster cattle at shows. In 1998, Pat married Dorothy 'Hill' Flynn, affectionately known as 'Dot'. Pat and Dorothy shared a love of animals and met through mutual friends at the Warwick Rodeo. Pat and Dorothy shared many years together, building a loyal marriage and strong connection. Pat sadly lost Dorothy to illness in 2014. Pat continued his association with the Droughtmaster breed and working with youth when he gained employment with Warwick SHS as an Agriculture Assistant. In 2009, Pat took a team of students and

GARDEN TIME

BEATRICE HAWKINS

A GREAT CONTRAST OF COLOUR A flower that I love to use in flower arrangements is the red hot poker. It is hardy and does well in full sun and although it now comes in a range of colours from cream through yellow, green and orange, the common red one - from which the name is derived - is still my favourite. In an area where I used to live some years ago, they had been grown on small train stations and, even though the line had been closed for many years, there were still large clumps that produced an abundance of flowers over a long period. I used to help myself to these and combine them with blue gum branches, also gathered from the roadsides, in a large, old fashioned black boiler for a very dramatic effect to decorate the wool shed for our annual stud ram sale. The boiler was filled with wet sand to hold them in place and it looked spectacular on the old platform wool scales, providing a link with history as clients entered the ultra-modern, state of the art wool shed. At the moment I don't have any in my garden but do have a position in mind for some amongst the agapanthus as they provide a great contrast of colour and form. Another project for the coming months. I may have to take a shovel with me on my travels so that if I come across some feral roadside clumps I can help myself! As I have said in previous columns,

I like my garden to be planted with memories, and these are some more I wish to perpetuate. Another 'must-have' when I get my native garden organised is a banksia. It will have to be one of the old fashioned variety that has the "bad banksia men" seed stems from the 'Snugglepot and Cuddle Pie' stories as these were a childhood favourite and the type my mum grew in her yard. The tree was still there a few years ago when I drove past the old house and would be at least 60 years old. Mum was way ahead of her time in growing natives in her garden. There are so many wonderful varieties that have been developed and adapted for the home garden now that the choice

of size, shape and colour is almost endless. There are tall-growing, medium, dwarf and ground cover varieties. There are yellow, green, pink and bronze flower heads. There are short, narrow flower heads, long, thin ones and huge, fat ones both short and long. One beautiful bush I have seen growing in gardens in WA looks like a flock of Major Mitchell Cockatoos has landed in the tree - just spectacularly beautiful. They are such a versatile, longlasting, cut flower also but I must admit that one of my least favourite things is when they colour the beautiful blooms artificially and end up with bright purples etc - guaranteed to make me annoyed! Nature does it better! They also dry so well for use in flower arranging as well. Some years ago I attended a lecture by Angus Stewart, of the ABC gardening show fame. He, at that time, had an extensive native garden at his home near Gosford, NSW. Even though this was on Hawkesbury sandstone country where many of the species grew naturally, his suggestion was to always build garden beds up for growing natives. At least one species of wattle will also have to included and the one I'd like is a Cootamundra wattle, as this is the variety that grew at the end of the road where I grew up and from where, in later years, I caught the bus to school. For my early school years I was doubled

on the bar of my brother's bike and then graduated to my own bike until high school when the bus became an option. I loved that wattle tree with its silvery grey foliage and early spring blossoms. As a result of sharing these happy memories I was spoilt with a bunch of the first wattle to appear each year on our property. As September 1st was officially declared wattle day by the then Prime Minister's wife Hazel Hawke, it is lovely to see so many different varieties flowering in the bush at present. As there are so many varieties that cover such a wide area of our country, it is fitting that it should be our national flower.

THE SPIN

SPORTS FANS TURN FROM THE FOOTY The Rugby League and AFL seasons are done. Admittedly there is a Rugby League Test around the corner and the AFL trade season - that few north of the NSW border understand - it is that time of year when horse racing captures the imagination of the public. If last weekend's Turnbull stakes was the entree then I cannot wait for the main course. There are no adequate superlatives to describe wonder mare Winx who again stunned to come from what seemed to be a hopeless position in the Flemington straight to win the race for the third time by a convincing one length margin. Riders in the race admitted the obvious - you just know she's coming, it's just when then she's there and gone. And so for the best of the best it looks to be all systems go for Cox Plate No. Four and then I suspect a very lush retirement paddock and a string of stallion suitors. As enthralled as the public has been with Winx, the Everest/Opera House stoush has also been interesting. It has been arguably one of the most turbulent weeks in the career of the mastermind of the Everest race, Peter V'Landys, chief Executive of Racing NSW. As we finished this edition, I wondered if it was all a storm in a sail - the images were expected to be flashed across the sails as the barrier draw took place Tuesday night, including the Everest trophy, the colours of the horse and the barrier number, and all over in around 10 to 15 minutes. Trainer TJ Smith was a firm believer in "Any publicity is good publicity" - so this stoush must be pure gold for Sydney and NSW Racing. Unfortunately there is no gold on offer for Racing Queensland with news this week that racing at Eagle Farm headquarters may not fully return for three years. It follows the disastrous relaying of the turf track and a series of blunders that would be comical if not so serious. There are plans to run trials on the new turf in upcoming weeks and some racing is hoped to return by Christmas. It will be some tome down the track (no pun intended) before things return to normal - if ever. Added to the track the debacle is the growing discontent among key Queensland racing stakeholders around the distribution of the new betting new Point of Consumption tax. Representatives of the four bodies representing jockeys, trainers, owners and breeders will meet with the Racing Minister this week. Let's hope commonsense prevails because unprecedented strike action in Queensland (Cox Plate and Melbourne Cup meetings) is on the table. It's all roses and top of the mountain in Victoria and NSW. As the prize money gap between Queensland and southern states widens, Queensland racing looks to be stuck in a mire and going only one way - down. -Casey R 'N' ON THE RANGE Coastal Campers rolled into the Inglewood SSA for a weekend of R and R with a bit of shooting thrown in - another big weekend on the range. There were plenty of visitors however results went the way of thee locals for the most part. Iain Bowen was successful in the Single Action - his scores good enough to out point Glen Holmes ad Peter Solomon. The good recent form of Tom Donald 22 SOUTHERN FREE TIMES

One of the many signs in his home town Innisfail acknowledging Billy Slater prior to the 2018 NRL grandfinal - apparently a nod to the chant from his junior teammates when he got the ball in clear air in his junior days - 'See You Later Billy Slater' probably a few NRL opponents over the years said the same. continued with a win in the Clays. Graham (Scruffy) Morgan and Ben Groth filled the minor placings. In other news from the range there has been plenty of work done to prepare the clay target range for the Zone Five Stand Event while a big bore range is being marked out. 140 metres of pathway cut so far - only 360 left to do. CRICKETERS FEELING THE HEAT The new look Aussie cricket side has made an inauspicious start to the summer of cricket against Pakistan in the game currently being played in Dubai. In the hot and tough conditions at the Dubai International Cricket Centre the Aussie bowlers copped a hammering in the first innings but there was not an inch of sand paper to be seen. Aussie fans are not used to seeing their cricket side under this type of pressure but I fear we will need to get used to it as the team rebuilds. Revelations this week that the Australian players had been paid winning bonuses has drawn scorn from many players ex players and coaches. Some suggesting if cricketers need bonus incentives to win they are not worthy of the "baggy green". Former Australian coach John Buchanan has endorsed the decision to make the findings of the current review into Australian cricket public. He called for the review to be made as transparent as possible to help win back the support of the Australian public at all levels. Buchanan has a unique insight into the game at all levels. Once Australia and Queensland Coach he is currently coaching West's in the Brisbane competition. SOUTHERN STARS SHINING While the Aussie Men's cricketers are struggling the ladies team - the Southern Stars are going from strength to strength with significant wins over New Zealand in the recent 50 over series. Local product Delissa Kimmince has earned selection in the Australian Southern Stars sides for one day and T20 cricket. Kimmince did not get an opportunity to star with the bat in that series but her efforts with the ball went far from unnoticed bowling.

Thursday, 11 October, 2018

Her first delivery was rated by many good judges as one of the best of the series. She showed she is no slouch with the bat when she scored a century in club cricket last weekend. The Southern Stars take on Pakistan in a One Day series (three matches0 later this month and Kimmince is part of the squad of 14. She has also been selected in the side to play in the ICC Wold T20 series in the West Indies in November. ANOTHER BIG DAY AT TANNY The Burmester Memorial Day at the Tannymorel Bowls Club was a day that had it all. Good bowls, heaps of fun and rain glorious rain. The Memorial Day is held in memory of Jean Vern and Di Burmester who were not only great members of the community but also a very big party of the local community. Not surprisingly there was a huge roll up for the event. Jack Breen, Courtney Mikkelsen, Robyn Lechner and Col Grace took the honours on the green. Runners up were Mark Burmester, Damon Goodwin, Mitch Smith and Matty (no 1) Shepherd (or so he thinks). The winning team had a 17-6 win over Thomison Keogh Cooter and Lochy Boal. The runners up defeated Hannah Keogh, Matt roach, Blake Graham and Thommo 12-9. All other games were also very close none more so than the battle between the team of Robyn Mc Donald Blake Galvin Jen Crook and Croc who played out a nine all draw against Glen McDonald Ryan Boal Rob Burmester and Coire Burmester. Sue Burmester Ben Tasky Di Walsh and Tim Crook had a two point win over Aliza Shellbach Kyle Ragh Glen Boal and Rossco Burmester - final score 13-11. There was also only two points between Norm Mc Donald Kacie Crook Zoe Smith and Brian Walsh who played Damo Boal John Shellbach Jessie Wallace and Mick O'Leary. The score in this game 9-7. After the action out on the green the big crowd enjoyed baked meal and the Karaoke apparently was a hoot. The form tip after the Karaoke is that Coire Burmester should definitely not give up his day job.

Organisers of the popular Tanny Classic remind everyone that it is "on again". The opening round gets underway on Friday (12/8). Names are to be in by 6.00pm with bowls commencing at 6.30. Everyone is welcome - you don't need to be a bowler - come along and join the fun and perhaps even share in some of the spoils. THE DON AWARDS Eight of the best athletes in the country will be vying for the coveted Don Award on Thursday night. The eight nominees include international motor racing stars Daniel Ricardo and Will Power, the Matildas' Sam Kerr and Southern Stars record breaking Ellyse Perry, the inspiring Wheel chair athletes Kurt Fearnley (AO) and Madison e Rozzario, Triathlete Lauren parker and captain of the Australian Kookaburra's mark Knowles (OAM). I have been fortunate to meet several members of Mark's family while on holiday here in Cairns and they will be cheering loudly for their man. He is up against some strong opposition but, Knowles the Flag Bearer at the GC Comm Games retired as Australia's most decorated Hockey player with a legion of fans in that sport and a raft of honours beside his name. Should he get the gong I reckon you'll hear them in Stanthorpe. At the same Sporting Hall of Fame function Richie Beau will be named the 40th Legend of Australian Sport. Karen Maher (Basketball), Wendy Botha (surfing), Sam Coffa(weightlifting), Allan Moffat (motorsport) Harry Kewell (football) and one of Queensland's favourite sons Darren Lockyer (rugby League will join Gai Waterhouse as inductees in the Australia Sport Hall of Fame. GOOD WEEK FOR GOLF CROQUET Good conditions, good weather, good play and the company of some visitors made for a great day of Golf Croquet last week. Bev Sullivan bought along her grandchildren Aalliyah and Zayden and Marian Castle's daughter Ness was another return visitor. In the opening game Bev Sullivan teamed up with Zayden. The pair scored an 11-6 win over Liz Ellway and Aalliyah. Both visitors put in creditable performances scoring three hoops apeice. In the second group Justin Liddy, plyaing two balls proved too strong for Marian Castles and Ness. Kath Hopgood and Dianne Wren had a narrow in over Elaine Brown and Bronnie Southgate. The game was decided in a tie break - the final score 10-9. Following the break the youngsters played very well scoring eight hoops but were eventually defeated by the expeienced duo of Kath Hopgood and Bev Sullivan final score 12-8. The three player team played single. Final scores Justin Liddy 9, Marian Castles 8 and Ness 6. In the final game Dianne Wren and Elaine Brown had a 12-10 win over Liz Ellway and Bronnie Southgate. MILLS TAKES A WIN There were some new names in the winner's wrap of Sporters Golf on Sunday. Overall winner was Jake Mills ahead of runner up Dave Williams. Mark Lynam had the Best Gross for the round and he and Paul Leotta figured in the run downs. Pin shots went to Paul Byrnes (12) and John Rawlings (17) while Casey Leotta owned the Pro Pin. He was also one of the luck winners of a meat tray. The other meat tray winner, Terry Roser. Tee off this Sunday is at the normal time of 7.30-8.00am - hope to see you on the green. freetimes.com.au

ACCOLADE FOR WATERHOUSE As an amazing Spring of racing begins to unfold it has been announced that the First Lady of the Turf, Gai Waterhouse is to join her father Tommy (TJ) Smith in the Sport Australia Hall Of Fame. Waterhouse who was inducted into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame in 2007 said, "To join my father in The Sport Australia Hall of Fame is wonderful and such a huge honour. "It's very special to be recognised at this stage - especially as I'm still training. It is an amazing achievement for Waterhouse who now trains in partnership with Adrian Bott. Adrian Bott. Waterhouse worked alongside her father for many years before battling the AJC and establishment for her right to train on her own accord. It was a tough battle but I doubt any of those who worked so hard to keep her out of the industry in those early days had any idea of the resolve and tenacity of this lady. After a lengthy court battle Waterhouse was finally granted a trainer's licence in 1992. Since then, Waterhouse has trained 138 Group one winners, seven Sydney trainers' premierships and equalled her father's record of 156 Sydney metropolitan winners in a season in 2002/3. It is a rare achievement for a father and daughter to be inducted into the Hall of Fame and Waterhouse says, "I'm sure he is looking down and would be extremely proud." Those in the establishment who fought so hard to keep this lady out of the industry must once again be choking on their words following this latest accolade. RAIN AND A WINNING PARTNERSHIP Stanthorpe woke to rain wonderful rain on Saturday and golf gave way to the weather but really no-one gave a damm. The rain so badly needed in the district also great for the course itself so no one minded having a day off. The medal event which had been

programmed for Saturday will be held at a later date and players will be notified of that date when that decision is made. On Sunday morning, as play got underway for the Mixed Foursomes Championships the weather outlook was far more positive and conducive to golf. The championship is a twenty seven hole event in alternate shot format. At the end of the day not a lot separated the majority of teams. Defending Champions, Team Waterworth, Matt and Nikki, however proved too good for the remainder of the field taking the 2018 title with a score of 139. Their winning score was a few shot higher than last year but still two shots clear of runners up, Team Webb Kay and Billy. Lefties, Max Hunter and Lorraine Evans teamed up and complemented each other's game to come out on top of the nett event, well ahead of the next best nett score of 112 for runner's up Eric McLellan and Shaneen McLellan. Linda Kelly and Aaron Simmers also finished on the same score but had to settle for the rundown. The popular annual event was sponsored by nett the winner, Lorraine Evans. Her sponsorship is greatly appreciated. This week it's time to turn to all things "Pink". Saturday is Tee off for the annual Breast Cancer Research day, sponsored by the Stanthorpe Branch of the Heritage Bank. The theme of the day's pay is not surprisingly - "Pink" There will be awards for the most appropriately dressed "Pink Player" - even an award for the Best Dressed "Pink Cart". So Golfer and others - "Get Your Pink On." Oh, did I mention it is a Single Stableford competition with proceeds for the day donated to this worthy cause. Tee off is from 11.30 am. Organisers are expecting another bumper field for the annual Pink event and there is a time sheet is on the board at the clubhouse. It's a fun day for a very serious cause - nearly all of us have been touched in

some way by this disease so please support the day. TIME TO FROCK UP It's time to frock up, put on the glad rags and study the form because all roads lead to Allman Park this weekend. The Warwick Turf Club host the first of the Southern Downs Country Cup Race meetings on Saturday and nominations for the seven event programme are very good. The headline event the Warwick Cup over the 1500metre journey has attracted 21 nominations. One of the fancied runners is sure to be Alcazar, trained at Eagle Farm by Desleigh Forster for connections including the Nolan family from Raheen Stud. The five year old daughter of Captain Sonador from mare Sovereign Road has been racing over longer distances recently but is a last start winner at the Gold Coast. Toowoomba trainer Ben Currie has four horses nominated for the race and is sure to have a hand in the finish. His galloper Isn't she Elegant has been a model of consistency recently. She has won four of her last five starts in Toowoomba and the last three on the trot. The $25,000 Cup has attracted what looks to be a quality field; another with good recent form is the Tony Sears trained Wow Factor. Flying the flag for the locals will be the Norm Hilton trained Jim 'N' Andy and Kira's beat trained by Michael Hemmings. The other major race on the card is the 1100 metre Warwick Newmarket. With $20,000 up for grabs the sprint event has also attracted 17 nominations. Michael Nolan has nominated smart mare She's Right who is returning from a spell but in an open field local trainer Les Clarke will be hoping his mare Grandioso who is one of a number of runner sho have never raced on the track can open her winning account at Allman Park for her local connections. With good prize money on offer for all

seven races the club received a total of 139 nominations for the program. All the Cup action begins on Friday night at 6.30pm in the Member's Lounge at the Turf Club with the Warwick Cup Calcutta. Racing Nation's James O'Shea will be on hand to interview special guest, Blair "Gibbo" Gibson author of The Race Club. The pair is sure to help you find some winners. Saturday gates open early for the start of the Southern Events. Ladies and gentlemen don't forget the big Fashions on the Field competition with plenty of prizes on offer. A full ring of book makers will be on hand betting on local and interstate events. There are also tote facilities on course. - Good punting. CHEERS Last week Queensland Rugby League lost one of their best - former Test full back Ken McCrohn. McCrohn died at aged 86 and it was a good innings for the little bloke who saw the light and moved from Armidale to Brisbane in1954 to play for West's. McCrohn played alongside the great Duncan Hall that year in club land winning the premiership - a good year he often recalled. He signed for nothing with West's; they found him a job, won a premiership and got paid a whopping 29 Pounds and five shillings for the year. Money left over from the presentation dinner. He went on to represent Brisbane Queensland and Australia. After retiring he did a stint coaching in northern NSW returning to Redcliffe where he coached the Dolphins until 1962. I had the pleasure of Ken's company on many Wanderers tours where he was a font of knowledge about football back in the day. He was also a great bowls player. In true Ken fashion he requested there be no funeral as such just asked those that knew him to raise a glass in his memory. Ken old mate - it is with pleasure - Cheers for the last time.
