MORE TO LOVE The editor’s desk I caught up with both Warwick Campdraft Committee chairman Geoff Grant and new 2018 Warwick Rodeo Queen Lauren McKenzie for this week's cover story (pages 4-5). With our 'Rose and Rodeo' Festival kicking off this coming Monday much work is continuing behind the scenes to welcome thousands of competitors and visitors to Warwick, starting with campdrafters who will begin rolling in this weekend from across Australia. A band of volunteers has been labouring away at the Warwick Showgrounds to construct new stockyards ahead of the 2018 Warwick Rodeo and Campdraft. Spectators don't usually pay a lot of attention to these 'back of house' facilities but they are crucial in ensuring a smooth flow of both campdraft cattle and rodeo stock in and out of the arena during competition. And as the 'face' of our rodeo, Warwick Rodeo Queen Lauren McKenzie is proud to represent the Rose City and its most historic annual event both here, interstate and overseas during the next 12 months. A big congratulations to Lauren and to all of the volunteers who make this event possible - and get ready to put on a warm Warwick welcome for those coming to town next week. Jeremy Sollars

COURT CASE NOT COUNCIL’S BY JEREMY SOLLARS The Southern Downs Regional Council has issued a statement regarding the discontinuance of an action in the Supreme Court of Queensland in relation to the Stanthorpe Civic Centre fire in 2016. As reported in the Free Times on Thursday 4 October the council - listed in court documents as the plaintiff in a case with Northern Lifestyle Sports Floors issued a 'notice of discontinuance' of the proceeding against the company, alleged to have been responsible for the fire. Northern Lifestyle Sports Floors, based at Cleveland east of Brisbane, was commissioned by the council in November 2015 to install new timber flooring in the Civic Centre. Court documents detailed that the council was seeking almost $2 million in damages against the company, which was alleged to have acted negligently when an employee failed to "safely dispose" of the contents of a dust collection bag which spontaneously ignited around 7pm on the evening of Friday 18 March 2016, with the subsequent fire causing extensive damage to the building. But this week a council spokeswoman told the Free Times that despite the council being listed as the plaintiff in the matter -

Damage to the Civic Centre from the fire in March 2016. originally commenced in May of this year - the case involved insurance companies acting for both the council and Northern Lifestyle Sports Floors. "Southern Downs Regional Council was indemnified for fire damage caused to Stanthorpe Civic Centre in March 2016," the spokeswoman said. "Council was fully reimbursed all money it was entitled to under the relevant insurance policy by its insurer. "SDRC has not started nor discontinued any legal proceedings against Brisbane based business, Northern Lifestyle Sports Floors. "Legal proceedings in relation to Stanthorpe Civic Centre were instigated by and at the instruction of Council's insurer to
resolve insurance claim matters to recover lost funds from a third party insurer. "While SDRC is listed as the plaintiff on the Queensland Supreme Court Statement of Claim, Council's insurer exercised its right to action subrogated legal proceedings against the defendant, represented by its insurer, in order to recover the amount of the insurance claim paid to SDRC. "SDRC cannot provide further information as to why court proceedings were ceased as it was not relevantly involved in those proceedings and any settlement of the proceedings is confidential between the two insurers." Northern Lifestyle Sports Floors has not responded to any requests for comment from the Free Times. ●
NEW BUNNINGS RECRUITS ARE ON BOARD BY JEREMY SOLLARS Hardware giant Bunnings Warehouse says its staffing team for its new $20 million outlet in Warwick will number more than 85. The company released a statement this week saying 32 team members are "new recruits and will join the existing team from the current Warwick store who will transfer to the new Warehouse once complete". The statement said the new Bunnings Warehouse Warwick will be "double the size" of the current store and is set to open its doors in November. Bunnings Warehouse Warwick Complex Manager Dan Pfingst, who has been with Bunnings for 10 years, said he was "excited to welcome local residents to the new store as well as continue to lend a helping hand in the community". "Team members have supported community groups already, working with the Warwick Netball Club to refresh their kitchen area with a new coat of paint and painting their equipment storage garage," he said. "The team is also about to help the

"Several of the new team members are also qualified tradespeople with skills in horticulture and landscaping, alongside experts in store to help locals with their DIY projects. "Bunnings provides a wide range of meaningful career development options for all team members, and I'm confident our new recruits will relish the opportunity to learn and grow with us in this bigger and better warehouse store. "The new Bunnings Warehouse Warwick will continue to provide ongoing support to community groups to raise funds for a variety of causes by hosting the famous
Bunnings Sausage Sizzles. "Local customers will enjoy the convenience of an even wider range of home improvement and outdoor living products backed by the best service at the new warehouse location. The new Bunnings Warehouse Warwick is located at the corner of Canning and Condamine Streets, behind KFC and adjacent to Warwick East State School. Wild rumours have been circulating that BCF (Boating Camping Fishing) Australia plans to open an outlet in the soon-to-beformer Bunnings site on Palmerin Street. The Free Times sought comment from BCF this week but had not received a response by time of printing. ●
The Southern Downs Regional Council appears to have not made its mind up just yet about the future of the non-potable water supply for the village of Karara west of Warwick. Councillors voted at their June general meeting in a confidential session to cut off the water - which Karara locals use for flushing toilets and watering gardens as it is not drinking-grade standard - but are still deliberating the matter. They held another confidential discussion at the September general meeting with the minutes recording that "Council defer consideration to the October 2018 General Meeting". The council has been hedging on the reason behind the decision to cut off Karara's water but Mayor Tracy Dobie has previously told residents it's because of health concerns related to residents drinking the water and using it for cooking and washing purposes, even though residents are adamant this is not the case. The council has also previously referred to a survey last year which it has claimed showed many residents do not use the water at all, which they likewise dispute. Karara locals who spoke to the Free Times this week say they remain in the dark about the future of their water supply, having received no update from the council since a public meeting with Cr Dobie and council officers in late July, where they were told the decision would stand. They had previously been told the council would supply each of the village's 11 residences with a free 5000 gallon rainwater tank and a free once-off fill to replace the supply from Canal Creek, for which they pay around $800 a year. The Free Times this week asked the council for an update on the Karara water issue, with a spokeswoman stating that "Southern Downs Regional Council Officers will meet with Karara residents in the coming weeks to further discuss the future of Karara's water supply", but would not be drawn further. ●

TAKING TO THE ARENA BY JEREMY SOLLARS his coming Monday 22 October marks the start of the 2018 Warwick 'Rose and Rodeo' festival - a week-long celebration not only of top-level campdrafting and rodeo competition but also the long and rich heritage of the 'Rose City'. The roses themselves on the main street are taking a little longer to bloom thanks to the drought but preparations are in
T
full swing to welcome an expected 30,000 visitors to Warwick next week, culminating in a huge weekend of roughstock action on the last weekend in October. Last Saturday evening was the crowning of the 2018 Warwick Rodeo Queen and Warwick Rodeo Princess - along with the announcement of junior cowgirl and cowboy winners - at the Warwick Rodeo Queen Quest presentation evening and dinner at the Doug Feez Pavilion at the Warwick Showgrounds. Lauren McKenzie is our new Warwick
Rodeo Queen, while Tyler Aspinall was crowned Warwick Rodeo Princess. Lauren grew up in Darwin but has been a Downs resident since 2013, after her mother and stepfather, Patch and Danny Smith, bought property at Allora in order to semi-retire and to be closer to other family members. Those include Lauren's uncle and aunt Bill and Cissy Bright - who live next door to the Showgrounds - and her grandmother Patricia Bright, with other family not far away in Dalby and Chinchilla.
Action across the 2018 campdrafting events kicks off early on Monday morning.

Lauren won the 2018 Queen Horsemanship award, demonstrating her skills on the Warwick Showgrounds arena last weekend on her pony 'Boone' - a Valentine's Day gift from fiance Alex Mearns, who is a familiar young face on the rodeo bronc riding circuit. Lauren and Boone weren't fazed by the damp conditions at the Showgrounds last Saturday after a few days of steady rain. "I wasn't fussed over the wet - the grounds here hold up pretty well," Lauren told the Free Times. "My pony just did everything I asked of him - he really came through for me on the day. "I'm very excited to be representing this great and historic event for Warwick. "It's going to be a little strange not just being a spectator this year but I am looking forward to getting out and promoting the Warwick Rodeo." When they're not on the rodeo circuit Lauren and Alex operate their own business - mobile diesel mechanical repairs - with Alex, a qualified diesel fitter, out on the road and Lauren taking care of the administration side. • Pages 8 & 9 - more photos from the Warwick Rodeo Queen presentation evening · Pages 16 and 17 - Miss Rodeo Australia news and historic Warwick Rodeo photos in our 'Focus on Warwick Rodeo 2018' advertising feature
CATTLE ON THE WAY Around 4000 campdraft cattle will be trucked to the Warwick Showgrounds for next week's 2018 campdrafting action, including the 'Melbourne Cup of Campdrafting' - the coveted Warwick Gold Cup. With competitor nominations for this year's campdraft events up on last year, the Campdraft Committee made the call to restrict the number of first-round or qualifying runs to two for the Warwick Gold Cup Campdraft and four for the Canning Downs Campdraft. Committee chairman Geoff Grant said while the committee knew this wouldn't necessarily be to the liking of some competitors - most in the toplevel campdrafts like to do as many as 10 qualifying runs - it had come down to a simple matter of there only being so many hours in the day, and overall fairness to competitors. This year a total of 511 competitors will take to the campdraft arena, up from 429 last year, as the sport of campdrafting continues to grow in popularity nationwide. Also growing in the sport is a trend towards the owners of top campdraft horses employing paid trainers to compete on their mounts on their behalf, with Geoff Grant saying around 100 competitors will fall into that category
this year at Warwick. "We're finding that a lot of people want to be involved in campdrafting with a pedigree horse, but they don't necessarily want to compete on the horse themselves," Geoff said. "My wife Sonia and I use a trainer for a couple of our horses - the ones we want to see compete more seriously, as opposed to the ones we compete on just for a bit of fun. "I think it's an indication of the growing level of interest in the sport." Geoff said despite the drought there were no concerns about the quality of the campdraft cattle being used this year, which have come from as far as Roma, Bollon, Goondiwindi and Texas, with around a quarter coming from local suppliers. "The cattle are crop-fed and supplementary-fed and they'll be in good condition," Geoff said. "We like to have more numbers (of cattle) than we actually need, just to make sure we have some back-up. "And it allows us to pick and choose." Geoff said travel to Warwick this year would be easier for competitors, with the Chinchilla Grandfather Clock Campdraft brought forward a weekend earlier, rather than as previously held the weekend before the Warwick events commence. ●
HARD YARDS ... Campdraft stalwarts like Geoff Grant and Peel Tribe and a band of other dedicated volunteers have been working hard to construct all-new steel cattle yards at the Warwick Showgrounds, replacing the former ageing timber facilities in time for the 2018 Warwick Rodeo and Campdraft. Steel from local suppliers was purchased with a $35,000 Gaming Community Benefit Fund grant but the lion's share of the labour has been donated. The new yards replicate the old layout, with a single laneway leading from the holding pens at the western end of the Showgrounds to move cattle and rodeo bucking stock to the campdraft's 'camp' complex and the rodeo chutes respectively. Geoff Grant said the long-term plan was to divide the single laneway into a double, to make moving the stock easier and eliminate the current "one-way traffic". •ForthefullWarwickRodeoand Campdraft program for 2018 visit www.warwickshowandrodeo.com.au •Checkoutnextweek'sFreeTimesin print for previews of next weekend's Rodeo action, and check in with us online for more on next week's events at www.freetimes.com.au ●

SERVICE AND DINNER TO REMEMBER On the night of Friday 22 November 1968 Killarney was devastated by a terrible storm - so powerful it was later classed as a tornado. That evening, the school was having its annual Speech Night. Many of the town's residents were gathered in the Capitol Theatre to see their sons, daughters and grandchildren receive their academic and sporting accolades. The storm hit around 8pm and when people stumbled out of the theatre in its wake they were met by a scene of total devastation. There was rubble everywhere and no electricity to light the way. It was fortunate that so many people had been in the theatre that night. Locals had held the doors closed at the height of the storm, keeping the people inside safe. Most of the buildings in the town's main street had been destroyed - those that were still standing had received significant damage. All the churches, the Show Pavilion and most of the buildings along Acacia Street were completely flattened. In the light of day, the town looked like a war zone. In the aftermath, the community came together to rebuild their town. The Army, electricians, telephone workers and many volunteers came and started the mammoth clean-up. The Bowls Club became an outlet for food parcels and clothes, all of which had been donated. The Co-op repaired its damage and became a very important source of materials to repair Killarney. Over 50’s fitness expert Bill Hardy believes My Health Record is the way of the future
• You don’t need to remember the dates of tests, medicine names or dosages. • Because healthcare providers have better access to clinical information, they have a more detailed picture to make decisions, diagnose and provide treatment. • You can control what information goes into your My Health Record and restrict who is allowed to access it. • For those that require assistance accessing your My Health Record, you can nominate someone to act on your behalf or ask healthcare providers involved in your care to add information to your record. • My Health Record has multi-layered security processes and strong safeguards in place to protect your information. By the end of 2018, a My Health Record will be created for every Australian, unless they choose not to have one. If you don’t want a My Health Record, you can opt out by 15 November 2018. My Health Record is here and by the end of 2018, a record will be created for every person with a Medicare or Department of Veterans’ Affairs card, unless they choose not to have one. My Health Record is an online summary of a person’s key health information such as allergies, current conditions and treatments, medicine details, as well as pathology and diagnostic imaging reports. It allows your nominated healthcare providers access to a summary of your health record when they need to. Local community member Craig Lewis has a number of health concerns and knows first-hand the importance of having a My Health Record - he can keep all of his health information online in one place and can choose which medical professionals can see it. “My Health Record has been greatly beneficial to me and to the health professionals that I am in contact with. I see a wide variety of doctors both in hospital and private practice and it allows both me and them to easily see what treatments and medications each health professional has prescribed.” Craig has also travelled interstate and during these trips, his My Health Record has provided comfort and piece of mind knowing that all of his key information is accessible in the one place. “Having a My Health Record means that I know that no matter where I travel in Australia, if I get sick, my treating health professionals can view my record and make decisions about my care.” As a central repository of documents from different healthcare providers, My Health Record stores information that can be accessed at the point of care. Some key things to remember about My Health Record: • Your important healthcare information is available in one place and accessible by your doctors, specialists or hospitals. • When moving interstate or travelling, your information can be viewed securely online. • In emergency situations, treating doctors can view information such as current medications and Advance Care Plans to provide appropriate treatment quickly.

STANTHORPE CUP SET TO JUMP OFF The countdown is on to one of the Granite Belt's most eagerly anticipated sporting and social events of the calendar - the 2018 K&A Building Stanthorpe Cup this Saturday 20 October. Stanthorpe Jockey Club president Neil Brunckhorst says everything is coming to hand nicely for the race day. Following good recent rain the track and surrounds are in perfect condition. Recently retired from full time race calling widely known Paul Dolan will be on track to call all the local races. With the addition of the Country Cups Challenge Race Series, a top class field is expected in the $12,000 K&A Building Stanthorpe Cup over 1400 metres. The winner of the race will go on to the $70,000 final at Doomben on Saturday 1
December. A strong support card ensures a great day of racing. With plenty of TVs on track and a big screen in the field, punters will be well catered for and a strong bookmakers ring will also add colour to the day. The very popular 'Fashions in the Field' will attract many entries all vying for the great prizes on offer. Live Band 'Push' will play from 5pm until 8pm. Patrons are reminded under 18's must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Gates open at 10am with the first local race at 1.30pm. Crisps Coaches will run free services to the races from 11am and return to town from 5pm. Coaches leave from the loading zone opposite the Post Office. · For more details visit www.wineracing.org · Check out Casey O'Connor's races preview in Spin this week, pages 22-23 ... ●
Set to jump for a great day out.

Both the Warwick and Stanthorpe areas received good rainfall in recent days, with Stanthorpe having already exceeded its long-term monthly average for October. As of Monday of this week Bureau of Meteorology data showed Warwick had received a total of 55.4mm for October (recorded at the Hermitage Research Station) as against the long-term October average of 69.3mm. Stanthorpe (recorded at Leslie Parade) had received 101.3mm for the month as of Monday, well over its longterm October average, also 69.3mm.
Good falls have been recorded at the source of the Condamine River at The Head above Killarney but not enough to produce significant new flows in the river. Speaking to the Free Times on Monday of this week Rosemary Peterson of Oaklea Cottages Bed and Breakfast Farmstay at The Head said they had recorded 142mm so far for October. Despite the rain the Bureau of Meteorology continues to predict drierthan-average conditions for most of Queensland - including the Southern Downs and Granite Belt - from November through to January. But we live in hope ... ●
HORSE DAY CANCELLED The Heavy Horse Charity Day which was due to have been held this coming Sunday 21 October at Mick Bradford's property near Yangan has been cancelled. Mick is unwell at the present time and the wet weather of recent days has also hampered efforts to prepare for the day. ●

Warwick SHS staff and students who went on the trip to Charleville.
DROUGHT TREK TO CHARLEVILLE As part of Warwick State High School's Drought Relief initiatives the Community Service Committee, Year Level Coordinators and the Chaplain last term coordinated the collection of non-perishable food items, toiletries and other goods to support farming families severely impacted by drought in the Charleville area. These donated items were delivered to around 40 families during the SeptemberOctober holiday break. The response to the appeal from WSHS students and families was overwhelming and the school has thanked each and every family for their
generous donations. The school would also like to acknowledge and thank the 12 staff who made the trek to Charleville in their own time and at their own expense to deliver the support packages, and the school has also thanked the many Warwick businesses who donated items to the appeal. To support our local community, the school conducted a Farmer Hat Fundraiser at the end of term 3. All students were encouraged to wear a straw hat or an Akubra for the day. Donations collected were given to Rural Aid. ●

TopX Warwick agent George McVeigh shows off the lambs from Aramac.
Lambs in the consignment were of exceptional and uniform quality.
HUGE CONSIGNMENT HITS SHEEP SALE BY JEREMY SOLLARS A likely record was set at last week's Warwick sheep sale for a consignment of lambs from a single vendor. The Stent-Smith family of 'Shannonvale' at Aramac, north of Barcaldine, sent 1200 very well-conditioned White Dorper lambs to Warwick, with TopX agent George McVeigh describing them as "superb".
The grain-fed lambs were aged generally between five and eight months and their average weight was around the 35 kilogram mark, making them suitable for both domestic processing and feedlots. The majority of the lambs were sired by White Dorper rams bred by David and Robbie Curtis of Bellevue Grazing Co at Millmerran - who took out several awards the weekend before last at the Warwick
Show and Rodeo Society Prime Lamb Carcass competition. The Stent-Smiths have been using Bellevue rams for the past three years. George McVeigh told the Free Times it was "great to see quality in such numbers" at Warwick, Queensland's only sheep selling centre. "Good quality lambs will always sell well but a consignment this size from a single vendor is great for our Saleyards," he said.
The lambs averaged $118 each at last week's sale, Wednesday 10 October, with roughly half going to the domestic trade and the remainder to feedlots. The big Stent-Smith consignment was part of a total yarding at last week's sheep sale of 1978 lambs and hoggets and 324 sheep. The top lambs account was Bathampton Trust of Hannaford, selling for $192. ●
FUNDING POURED INTO EXPORT GRANTS The Federal Government says it is opening doors in China and the US for Aussie wine makers, by investing another $500,000 in the Wine Export Grants program. Minister for Agriculture and Water Resources and Maranoa MP David Littleproud this month said the extra money would make it easier to sell Australian wine to our largest trading partners. "Aussie wine is among the best and we want China and the US to know about it," Mr Littleproud said. "This will help our top wine producers
jump export hurdles in both countries. "Small and medium producers can claim up to $25,000 or 50 per cent of the cost of promoting their wine in either country. THE SPIN
This year the Stanthorpe Cup has been included in Racing Queensland's Country Cups Challenge. The winner of the 2018 race could be in line for a share of the $70,000 prize money on offer for the final of the Queensland Country Cups Challenge to be run at Doomben on December 1.
RECORD NOMINATIONS FOR FIELDS When nominations closed on Tuesday morning the Stanthorpe Jockey Club received 89 nominations for the five-event programme. A club spokesman said the strong nominations all but ensured races will carry capacity fields and there is sure to be some outstanding racing. A total of 23 runners are nominated for the main event on the programme, the K & A Builders Stanthorpe Country Cup and Country Cups Challenge run over 1400 metres. Deagon galloper Lands Office trained by Darryl Ward comes into the race with a recent win at the Sunshine Coast in a Class 5 over 1400metres. The seven year old will also handle softer going if there are any late showers. It is one of two runners he has nominated for the race. The Ben Currie trained Isn't She Elegant comes into the race highly rated with wins in Toowoomba at her past three starts and is sure to have plenty of followers. After a brief look at the nominations there appear to be plenty of chances and several runners will be unknown chances. A lot will hinge on acceptances and barrier draws as this will be the first time these gallopers have seen the track. There is an upside for punters. With such strong fields for the meeting it is anticipated there will be plenty of bookmakers on course.
