Greens cash call Greater Dandenong Council’s campaign for local asylum seekers facing destitution has received a shot in the arm - albeit from a ‘minor’ State political party. A month out from the State Election, the Greens have proposed $13 million emergency assistance to asylum seekers who are facing the total loss of federal Status Resolution Support Services (SRSS) payments. South East Metro MP Nina Springle called on the State Government to support the plan to cover the $35 a day payments. The “heartless” SRSS cuts have already rolled out - which is expected to impact on 800 asylum seekers in Victoria by the end of the year. Greater Dandenong has led a multi-Victorian council mayoral taskforce to lobby against the cuts. Next year, the cuts are set to strike asylum-seeker families, according to Greens councillor Matthew Kirwan. These families make up many of the 2000 asylum seekers living in Greater Dandenong, he said. Ms Springle said families with young children and pregnant women were facing potential homelessness. “The Morrison Government is telling people typically dealing with uncertain futures, language barriers and a lack of work experience in Australia to go and get a job as if it’s the easiest thing in the world. “We are appealing to Victorian Labor to show some compassion and cover this funding for the next eight months.” Friends of Refugees co-founder Sri Samy said the Springvale-based service was already stretched by the

immense need. Even on SRSS payments, people were sleeping on the floors, covering themselves with their home’s curtains in winter and eating just boiled rice, she said. “These SRSS cuts are going to see people literally sleeping on the streets, homeless with children struggling to go to school. “If even 100 people lose their income and if they come to our door we are not even in a position to support these 100 people.” Springvale Benevolent Society president Joe Rechichi said all charities in the South East would be “in strife” under the cuts. He called for more support to help asylum seekers land jobs, as well as more public housing to combat the “unaffordable” rental market. “We have to do something. “They’re integrated in the community now. They can’t go back.” Opposition multicultural affairs spokeswoman Inga Peulich said Labor and Greens’ policies drove up the cost-of-living and was “hurting families from all backgrounds”. “Under Labor, cost of housing is rising with many unable to afford to buy a house, rents are rising, our public housing is mismanaged and more and more people are finding themselves homeless. “Greens policies in particular are destroying family and community values while they pretend to care about our multicultural communities.“Greens policies are extreme policies and they will do nothing to help address the issues of homelessness across the south east.” The State Government did not respond to Star News Group’s enquiries before deadline.

Man jailed after drug death of girl By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Dandenong man has been jailed for supplying the drug GHB to a 13-year-old girl who suffered a fatal overdose. Driving a stolen car, Luke Darren Delphin and a male friend picked up the victim Alesha Fernando and her 15-year-old friend from a house at Narre Warren about 9pm on 19 June, 2017. At his apartment, all four consumed GHB as well as bongs of cannabis. Delphin drew up the amounts of GHB, handing each person a plunger of the drug. He kept handing more to the victim, who “kept taking it”, Judge Claire Quin said during sentencing at the County Court of Victoria on 17 October. Alesha consumed the most. Her friend estimated that Alecia ingested 6 millilitres, the judge said. She fell asleep, and was discovered unconscious and apparently not breathing by a friend about dawn the next day. Delphin’s friend administered CPR under the instructions of a triple-0 operator. “I can’t lose my apartment over this s***,” Delphin said. “It’s not worth it.” Alesha remained unconscious and died in hospital from GHB toxicity. Delphin, 20, pleaded guilty to two counts of supplying a drug of dependence to a child. He told police at the time that he believed the girls were both 17.

The accused also pleaded guilty to stealing two cars, stealing a set of number plates, a petrol drive-off, resisting a police officer and possessing cannabis, ice and GHB. In a victim impact statement at court, Alesha’s mother Katrina Gavan told of how “every day is like struggling through quicksand”. “It’s exhausting, relentless. It just can’t be true.” There was “no respite, no relief, no hope,” she wrote. Outside the court, she told reporters that everyone loved “beautiful, happy, adorable” Alesha. “That’s why (Delphin) took advantage of her,” Ms Gavan said. “He should have been done with rape, murder or manslaughter because I know his intentions that night.” Judge Quin noted Delphin’s “deprived” upbringing. He started drinking alcohol and chroming from nine years old, graduating to daily illicit drug abuse. He had a diagnosed brain injury as a result, as well as depression since 13, the court heard. Judge Quin declined to sentence Delphin to a community corrections order. This was due to the gravity of the crime as well as Delphin’s “significant” criminal history, she said. Delphin was jailed for up to three-and-ahalf years, with a two-year non-parole period. The term includes 346 days already served in remand.

IN BRIEF Woman injured in Dandenong home invasion A woman has been hospitalised after being assaulted and threatened with a knife by three intruders in her Dandenong home. The victim in her 30s woke to find the burglars inside her Birdwood Avenue home just before 2am on 16 October. The intruders assaulted and threatened her then demanded cash and jewellery. They fled on foot in an unknown direction. One of the offenders was described as African appearance, about 182 centimetres and wearing a blue-grey hoodie and dark jeans. Another was perceived as Maori appearance and a large build, the other was described as Caucasian appearance. The victim was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Any information to Greater Dandenong CIU on 9767 7487 and Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or crimestoppersvic.com.au.

Armed robbers target Noble Park servo Two men have threatened an attendant with a pole during an armed robbery at a Noble Park North service station. The robbers wielded the weapon and demanded cash at the front counter of the Princes Highway store just after midnight on 16 October, Victoria Police say. The attendant handed over the till. The offenders fled in a nearby black Holden Commodore sedan, which was later found in Koonung Park off Heppner Street, Blackburn North. Police believe the vehicle was affixed with false plates. The robbers were spotted running from the abandoned vehicle towards a nearby bowls club about 12.35am. They were described as Caucasian appearance, and wearing baseball caps and dark clothing. Any information to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or crimestoppersvic.com.au.

'Ice' seized from car wreck Police have seized a commercial quantity of the drug 'ice' from a car that crashed into a parked vehicle in Springvale. The car was travelling south when it crashed and rolled over on Springvale Road on 12 October, Greater Dandenong CIU police say. Paramedics were first to discover the drugs inside the vehicle as they treated the driver. Police allegedly seized 120 grams of ice as well as 200 grams of GHB, 1 gram of cocaine and 1.5 grams of cannabis from the vehicle. They raided the driver's home, where further drugs were found, police say. The driver was taken to The Alfred hospital with suspected soft-tissue injuries. He was expected to be interviewed by police upon his discharge from hospital.

Luke Delphin was jailed over the fatal GHB overdose of a 13-year-old.

A massive outpouring of generosity has surprised organisers of a Food for 400 anti-poverty drive. Springvale Neighbourhood House had set a target of 400 non-perishable food items to be distributed to local people in need. However donations tripled expectations - more than 1200 items have formed a momentous 'wall of food' at the neighbourhood house. "We thought we could store the food under our desks or on top of our cupboards," manager Melanie Virtue said. "But the food kept rolling in." On 17 October, the tonnes of cans, grains, feminine hygiene products, pasta and sauce, coffee and tea, cooking oil and breakfast cereal were presented to stalwart charity Springvale Benevolent Society. An overwhelmed president Joe Rechichi was grateful for the donation. His charity provides $50,000 of annual assistance without a cent of state and federal

funding. It delivers food vouchers, food, blankets and other essentials to the doorstep of single mums, single dads, bread-winners who lost their job, and asylum seekers battling on a fraction of the dole. Volunteers see for their own eyes what each household desperately needs. Mr Rechichi told of how as a child, he sometimes went to bed without being fed. For decades, he'd strived to ensure no local child went without food. "I know of children not going to school because they don't have food to fill a little lunch box. "It really hurts me when I have to attend these houses. I think why? What's wrong with us?" Greater Dandenong councillor Roz Blades, a volunteer with the charity, praised the kindness of the community. "In our lives we all have been in a situation where we don't have much food. "We know what it's like and we don't want other people to feel like that." Greater Dandenong was among the most

THURSDAY NOVEMBER 22

If Bradley Scicluna listened to his doctor, he wouldn't have attempted his Melbourne Marathon run on 14 October. But the engineer at Dandenong bus manufacturer Volgren has made a habit of defying medical wisdom. Ever since a devastating diagnosis of stage-4 gall bladder cancer more than a year ago. Lumbered by chronic pain, Mr Scicluna says he completed the 10 kilometre-leg of Melbourne Marathon in a "shuffle/fast walk". Days after, he still felt "a bit sore". "I was not meant to do it. The physio and the doctor said not to do it. "It was a bit of stubbornness on my part. It had been a goal of mine 10 or 12 weeks ago. "It was a great experience, finishing inside the MCG." Even after his diagnosis, the husband and father of two had been going on daily six-kilometre runs from his Lynbrook home. He regarded it as a tonic that helped ward off the side-effects of chemo and radiotherapy. Mr Scicluna had been treatment-free for months, running well past what doctors thought would be his expiry date. It was only a month ago that a bout of severe hip pain slowed him down. "My wife and some of my co-workers commented that it was still a good effort to do 10 kilometres (at the Marathon). "There's a lot of people who wouldn't have bothered." In the meantime, Mr Scicluna, his wife Catherine and daughters Olivia and Charlotte are getting away for regular trips away. "We're just doing things all the time. Every

Recently, he put his name to a National Oncology Alliance campaign on behalf of more than 6000 Australians with cancer without PBS-listed medications. There are no PBS-listed treatment options for Mr Scicluna's rare cancer. The potentially life-extending medication Herceptin is available on the PBS for breast cancer patients but not gall bladder cancer. It would cost him a prohibitive $70,000 a year. In September, the Federal Government announced $10 million for clinical trials for six rare cancers, as well as boosted funding for research.

By Cam Lucadou-Wells An "erratic" and "violent" man has kicked in a shop window, punched a bus passenger 11 times in the head and attacked a police officer in separate incidents, a court has heard. Police approached John Wotherspoon in response to reports of an erratically-acting man possibly armed with a knife near Cranbourne railway station early on 23 March. Wotherspoon, who was seen by running around in circles in the bus area, forcibly pushed against the police car's driver-side door to prevent an officer from getting out. He fled, pursued by a police officer on foot while another tried to cut him off in the car. When the latter police member stepped out of the car, she was punched by Wotherspoon to the side of her face. Wotherspoon was eventually restrained by both officers on the ground, while he "violently lashed out". The assaulted officer was treated by paramedics. Wotherspoon also faced charges due to repeatedly bashing a 'Good Samaritan' aboard a Dandenong-Doveton bus on 13 August. The victim had stepped in when he saw Wotherspoon yelling into an elderly man's face at close range. In order to protect the senior man, the victim grabbed the accused around the shoulders.

12402593-DJ44-18

‘Erratic’ man in bashing Wotherspoon struck the victim 11 times to the face and head, resulting in a severely bleeding nose. The accused then dragged him to the ground, ripping a centimetre of hair from his scalp. Several passengers eventually overpowered Wotherspoon until police arrived. He also pleaded guilty to kicking in a $2500 shop window of a Dandenong pawn shop on 4 August. He had been enraged after a passer-by refused his plea for money. Wotherspoon was well known to the court as well as frequently admitted to Dandenong Hospital's psychiatric unit, his lawyer Farah Banihali said. At the time of offending, he had been unmedicated with his community treatment order revoked, the court was told. Upon Wotherspoon's release from custody, he was set to be admitted as a hospital inpatient, Ms Banihali said. He would struggle to comply with a community corrections order, she said. Magistrate Doug Bolster noted that Wotherspoon's "very serious" mental health issues could be treated in jail. Wotherspoon was jailed for six months, including 63 days in pre-sentence detention. He was ordered to repay $2500 for the broken shop window, and to provide a DNA sample to police.

Parents go back to school

Sunday 4 November 10am – 4pm

By Tanaka Nyamvura Gleneagles Secondary College is opening the door to parents from culturally diverse backgrounds by running English classes once a week. Held on Monday mornings, the classes at the college are part of a new partnership with the Narre Warren Learning Centre. The main aim is to help parents navigate day to day life in Australia with a focus on conversational writing and reading techniques. "Practising English in this program helps me to feel more confident when talking in daily life," Mrs Akbhari, a parent at the school, said. The parents also have the option to do other self-improvement activities such as computer literacy and social skills. "Parents are learning to speak with their children's teachers and are becoming more aware of the college's processes and activities," Narre Community Learning Centre teacher Kai Ni Gu said. The public are cordially invited to view a great war propaganda picture under the direction of the Defence Department, which is to be shown at the Dandenong Town hall on Tuesday evening next 29th inst. The picture is entitled " With the Australians in Flanders", and is 3000 feet long. It is extremely interesting, and shows infantry going over the top, tanks crashing into enemy trenches, artillery pounding the Hun defences, Flying Corps eyeing the enemy movements. It is a thrilling picture and many of the boys can easily be recognised. In addition "The Kingdom of Hope," a war drama will also be shown. Admission is free but a collection will be taken up to defray expenses. Lieutenant Bolton is in charge of the arrangements.

Television clowns Zig and Zag and comedian Joff Ellen will be the main attraction at the Westall State School's fete next Saturday at noon in the school grounds and a further highlight will be a Miss Westall contest. Wheel theft puzzle A truck loaded with more than $45,000 worth of magnesium wheels was stolen when thieves robbed the Canterbury Tyre and Mags store overnight on October 14. The bandits used a sledge hammer or similar device to smash their way through a brick toilet block and entered Princes Highway Springvale store from behinds. They then cut the wires to the alarm system and loaded a truck on the premises with the expensive wheels. Many of the sets were valued at about $2000. The thieves also took a Shimanu impact gun which can be sued to attach the wheels to cars. The truck was located the following morning in Chute St Mordialloc. De-

Sweet taste of success By Cam Lucadou-Wells There's no mistaking what real honey tastes like. While some big companies are scandalised by alleged 'fake' honey, Dandenong Marketbased Joe Hart is true to his craft. He travels and works long hours, ensuring his mobile beehives literally follow the seasons. Through the year, he moves his 700 hives and 37,000 bees to where the gum trees flower across Victoria and Queensland. At the moment, it's the season for yellow box. Early December for red river gum, the New Year for stingybark and February-May for grey box. "Most beekeepers move their hives within a 500 kilometre radius depending on the flowering season." It's hard to describe the difference in flavours, though they undoubtedly tickle the palate in diverse ways.

DINE GLOBAL The orange citrus honey has a unique light zest and sweetness. Mr Hart's favourite, the river gum, has a deeper flavour. And even richer in texture is the dark, thick honey from the stringybark. Bee stings are part of the trade. Mr Hart estimates for every 50 hives he opens, he might hit an aggressive one. He's kept bees his whole life, following in the footsteps of his 90-year-old father who still

tends a few hives. The Hart's Honey outlet at Dandenong Market has served his native honeys for 17 years. Through that time, Australia produces the fourth-largest amount of honey in the world. Its bees have steered clear of the diseases that have wiped out swarms overseas, Mr Hart says.

Mr Hart says he'd prefer not to speculate on why some companies have contaminated their honeys with fake ingredients. "There's no reason for doing that. Australia is quite a rich environment for honey. "If you want to keep your customers happy, you should supply them a quality product."

Youth keep show fresh By Cam Lucadou-Wells The Dandenong Show must go on, and it's in the hands of the 'next generation' of organisers. Rachael Cochrane, Ricky Ferris and Kate Reedy are all steeped in the Show's rich tradition, but are also keeping an eye on the future. They're part of a loyal, hard-working band of volunteers - young and old - behind the 147th annual show. With cut-price tickets at the gate, much of the packed program of attractions are free. It includes a bevy of young, local musicians, singers and dancers performing live. And the expected thrilling rides, showbags, monster trucks, farm animal displays, milking and shearing demonstrations, arts, crafts and home-made foods. Ms Reedy, whose family's involvement spans four generations, has fond memories of entering competitions as a child. Her family clings onto their farm in Cranbourne South as housing estates creep ever closer. Part of the show's role now is educating children and adults who have never seen a farm and its animals before. Here they see milk squeezed from a cow, wool shorn from a sheep and spun into wool. "They see the value of something that they might have taken for granted," Ms Reedy said. "It's great to see a child to pat a calf or a goat and ask what is that? "We do this because we love it." Ms Cochrane and her family are preparing to 'break in' their Charolais beef cattle ready for the upcoming show. 'Breaking in' means to get cattle used to wearing a halter harness, so they can be led calmly for exhibition. While at high school she started volunteer-

She's also made enduring friendships, including meeting her husband James. The national drought is a real threat in Victoria despite the green hills around the family's Bunyip farm, Ms Cochrane says. "Grain prices are going up, hay prices are going up because there's no rain to grow crops." Three generations of Mr Ferris's family have taken part in the show. He manages a 1900-

acre cattle and sheep farm, Webb Pastoral, in Glenburn, north-east of Melbourne. Farming is still an attractive career option, he said. And winning show awards for prize livestock are a key way to make a name for yourself in the "industry". He first started showing cattle when he was 5. At the show, he's made friends all over the country and the world - even met his wife Melissa there. "If you do well in the ring, people see your

success. It's part of promoting your business and yourself." Mr Ferris has been on the show committee for 16 years. He wants to keep the event relevant to young people. "We dropped the gate (price) right back and hope to get a few more people through. "It's very good value for money. The Royal Melbourne Show is very expensive but we offer a similar experience for a lot cheaper cost. "We have something for everyone."

Australian Butchers Store is heading to Berwick. But for owner Eddie Travaglini, the store’s opening is more of a homecoming. The Travaglini name is synonymous with the Aussie butcher industry. For most, it’s linked to Tasman Butchers, while others will relate it to Brookmere Meats. Both are correct. Tasman Butchers opened in Berwick in 1991, the brainchild of Eddie’s father, Rino Travaglini. Having worked in the meat industry since the early 1960s, Rino knew a thing or two about the competitive business and the Enterprise Avenue store became a local institution, as well as one of the first ‘big-box’ Tasman Meat stores. Over time, the store traded as both Tasman Meat and Brookmere Meats, but upheld the same philosophy; “the service must be great, the quality must be perfect and the price must be low“. The Travaglinis remained a part of Tasman until 2013, when the company was sold. But unable to stay away from the industry for too long, Eddie and Rino opened Australian Butchers Store in Dandenong in 2015. Then, in September 2018, it was announced that Tasman Meats had entered administration and the Berwick store was up for sale. Eddie, who had expanded his Australian Butchers Store chain to include stores in Mernda, Boronia and Somerville in just three years, admits that he jumped at the chance to purchase the Tasman store and “return home“. “Berwick was the first of the big Tasmans,” he said. “I remember when there were paddocks

IN ASTRA VIRTUS

and an airstrip behind us. Where the university is there was an airstrip and we used to sit there at lunchtime and watch the planes come in over Clyde Road ... So taking it back is like the jewel in the crown. It’s an institution business and it’s something I’m really proud of. “It’s our grassroots, so getting it back means everything.” When Eddie reopens the store, it will trade as Australian Butchers Store offering premium quality wholesale meat, poultry, game and gourmet products. With roughly 106 employees, Australian Butchers Store supply products to chefs, restaurateurs, catering companies and local families. Eddie said he “absolutely“ learnt from his time at Tasman. “You’re always learning and you’re always looking to perfecting what you’re doing,” Eddie said. “The mentality (of Australian Butchers Store) is probably the same as we’ve always had, and the theory behind the business is the same, but what we offer is a bigger range. The range is everything as far as I’m concerned we try to offer multiples of everything. “Customer service is still number one; you look after them, they keep coming back.” Excited about the newest chapter in the Australian Butchers Store story, Eddie will take over Berwick Tasman on 29 October. The store will only be closed for a few days for refurbishment. “I just want people to know that we’re back and it’s going to reopen with a bang. We’re going to give the Berwick community back what they deserve.” To stay up to date with store information, visit butchersstore.com.au.

No bail for alleged ‘foul disobedience’ By Cam Lucadou-Wells A man defied police to the point of allegedly urinating on the floor of his Narre Warren police cell and defecating on a provided towel, a court bail hearing has heard. Neil Ashley McGrath, 48, of Noble Park, unsuccessfully applied for bail via prison video link at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 15 October. Police alleged that McGrath was set to be charged over his conduct in police custody in September - on top of 50-odd outstanding charges. The court heard McGrath allegedly stripped off his hospital gown in the back of the police divisional van. Police had to carry him to his Narre Warren police cell because he refused to walk, nominal informant Sergeant Daniel Justice told the court. McGrath claimed he was derobed because he had been assaulted by police, his barrister

Gordon Porter said. In the cells, he allegedly banged on the cell doors, swore, and threw wet paper towel onto the cell's camera and glass cell door. He urinated by the cell door, causing a puddle outside the cell. Then he tried to flush a blanket down the toilet, police claimed. After complaining about the cold temperature of his cell's shower, McGrath defecated on a towel and flicked faeces onto the cell door, police told the court. McGrath had been arrested at his boarding house on 3 September. He was wanted on eight outstanding bench warrants for not appearing at court over the past two years. The warrants related to eight separate criminal matters, including several incidents of alleged dangerous driving and being pursued by police.

He had 35 previous convictions for failing to appear on bail. Mr Porter said McGrath had forgotten one of his court dates because he had an appointment to collect his dentures on the same day. "He wants to be released on bail because half of his teeth are at home." Nominal informant Sergeant Daniel Justice told the court that such medical matters were irrelevant "given how serious the offending is". McGrath argued for his release due to his mental health issues, not receiving enough methadone in prison, a recent asthma attack the night before and his missing dentures. In refusing bail, magistrate Doug Bolster said McGrath failed to meet the 'exceptional circumstances' test, and was also an unacceptable risk of failing to attend court. McGrath was remanded to appear at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 24 October.

Man wanted over stolen credit cards Beth and Jim Wilson celebrate 65 years of marriage. 186318 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS

A toast to 65 years married By Tanaka Nyamvura Jim and Beth Wilson are still a picture of bliss after being married for 65 years. The happy couple met at a dance in Wollongong in the '50s and attribute their marital success to one thing, "Jim does as he's told," Ms Wilson said of her husband with a chuckle. Mr Wilson, who also celebrated his 91st birthday last week, says he knew he wanted to marry Jill only three months after meeting her. "She's so easy to get along with", he said. The couple - both members of Dandenong Workers Club - have three sons and one grandson who live in Wollongong. They are now retiring in a hostel in Dandenong.

Here they still enjoy little things like watching the children at the school across the road play or going for an occasional drink.

A man is being sought by police in relation to using stolen credit cards. The man was wearing a moonboot on his left leg when stolen bank cards were used at two businesses in Dandenong Plaza and Noble Park on 20 September. Stolen cards were also used nine times in Lynbrook and Cranbourne in early May, police say. The man is also being sought in relation to criminal damage at Lynbrook Hotel on 8 May. He is described as Caucasian appearance with a solid build and extensive tattoos on both legs. Any information to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or crimestoppersvic.com.au

They also have cute traditions, oten toasting before they have a drink or constantly finishing each other's sentences.

Police are seeking to speak with this man over alleged purchases with stolen credit cards.

"We have managed to stay happily married by learning to disagree and move on without sulking' Ms Wilson said. The couple continue to love each other by enjoying the simple things in life and being each other's best friend. "Love means putting the other person first all the time and being there for them," Ms Wilson said.

Funding is announced for The Greek Orthodox Community Hall on 11 October.

Ancient Greek hall gets modern By Tanaka Nyamvura Dandenong's Greek Orthodox community hall is set to receive a long-awaited $300,000 facelift. The refurbishment project which is still in the planning stages will see the 44-year-old building get an upgrade to its kitchen, audiovisual systems, foyer and toilet facilities. On 11 October, the State Government announced a $150 000 Multicultural Community Infrastructure fund grant - which is matched dollar for dollar by the Greek Orthodox community. "The hall which has been renovated twice already is tired, but we will be giving it a fresh modern look", Greek Orthodox Community of Dandenong and Districts president Steve Karamoschos said. As a result, the hall for more than 1000 community members will become more accessible. This starts with the installation of inside toilets. Some of the groups that will benefit from these changes are an elderly citizens club, Greek school and community fellowship which occurs once a month. "The grant will enable us to upgrade our community hall, providing better access to our members and the Greater Dandenong community," Mr Karamoschos said. A new community soup kitchen may also be a possibility. Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams announced the grant. "By working together with local multicultural communities, we can build a Dandenong where everyone belongs, feels accepted and can freely participate and contribute," Ms Williams said.

Family rocked by intruder By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Narre Warren South family have been terrified by an intruder who strode into their home in the middle of the morning, a court heard on 15 October. Ghok Yien Thiang, 20, walked in uninvited through an unlocked fly-screen door, causing alarm to several occupants in the house on 3 May. A mother hid with her nine-week-old baby behind a bed during the bizarre encounter, Dandenong Magistrates' Court was told She stated in her victim impact statement she was thankful that her husband was at home at the time to confront Thiang. "I don't know what he'd have done (otherwise)," she said. Thiang disregarded other female occupants who beseeched him to leave. One recalled that he "got in my face" when she asked him to go.

He told them he was looking for a person named 'Jackie', and made a phone call while standing out on the verandah: "I'm here. Where are you?" He held up the flat of his hand, warning a male resident not to "come near me". Thiang eventually left, driving away his brother's car. He was a disqualified driver at the time. In their victim impact statements, family members described not being able to sleep, being teary, fearful of noises at night and losing their zeal for social outings since the incident. Their close family unit had become fractious. They'd also upgraded home security with CCTV around their home. On 23 February, Thiang crashed while trying to pass heavy traffic on Narre-Cranbourne Road, Narre Warren. He swerved several times, narrowly missing

other vehicles. He veered onto the gravel verge, striking a roadside reflective pole and nearly flipping his car, police told the court. Thiang fled from the scene on foot, and was arrested in Narre Warren later that morning. He also pleaded guilty to smashing a window to break into a recently built Becon Home in Clyde North on 29 June. He later told police he slept there overnight because he had nowhere else to stay. He was also charged with shoplifting clothes worth $149 from Dandenong Plaza and threatening to send security guards "to their maker" with what appeared to be a 30-centimetre ivory tusk . After a struggle on the ground, Thiang fled on foot. He was chased for up to a kilometre by police before his arrest. An "extremely remorseful" Thiang - who was born in an Ethiopian refugee camp - had suffered a severe mental health breakdown

this year, his lawyer told the court. His "bizarre" behaviour at the Narre Warren South house stemmed from believing friends were waiting for him, the lawyer said. "He understands that was very terrifying for the people in the house. "He left when he realised it was not the correct house." Now in ongoing treatment, Thiang was "feeling a lot better and healthier in himself". Magistrate Doug Bolster said if not for Thiang's young age, unblemished criminal record and mental health issues, he would have been jailed. Thiang was convicted and put on an 18-month supervised community corrections order with 200 hours of unpaid work, drug testing and alcohol treatment. He was disqualified from driving for 12 months.

Hard road to make change More than 50 students and staff at Hallam Senior College hit the treadmill as part of a 24hour walkathon fundraiser. The personal development class raised $350 for Heavy Metal, which runs mens behaviour change and anger management groups. Over the day-and-night event, the team ran 134 kilometres. Seventeen of the students stayed up during what was described as a long, hard night. The college is also screening the powerful family-violence documentary Call Me Dad. The film delves into a local Heavy Metal mens behaviour change group, and how men are challenged to change their violent ways.

It screens at Hallam Senior College on 1 November, 7pm, followed by a Q&A with counsellors David and Jacqui. To book, follow the links on the Heavy Metal Group Facebook page.

VLocity trains now on order until 2021 The first of the new Dandenong-built Vlocity carriages passed inspection from Premier Daniel Andrews prior to their roll-out on regional rail services in November. The 39 VLocity carriages are being built at the Bombardier Transportation factory in Dandenong South. They include more seats and accessibility improvements, as well as mobile signal boosters to improve phone reception for passengers on the Bendigo, Geelong, Ballarat, Gippsland and Seymour lines. The company is also commissioned to build larger and modernised nine-car V-Line trains as part of the VLocity Refresh Project. Works on the new trains are expected to start mid -2019, and finish in 2021. The project has supported 45 local jobs on top off 500 created to build 87 new trains ordered by the State Government. Regional passengers are set to see the first of the new VLocity carriages from next month and a refresh of Victoria's regional train fleet paving the way for bigger trains, thanks to the Andrews Labor Government. Visiting the factory on 15 October, Premier Daniel Andrews said the project created Victorian jobs as well as bigger, better trains for more passengers. "We said we'd deliver the road and rail projects Victoria needs, and we are. "Whether it's delivering brand new regional trains or upgrading every regional passenger line, we're getting people where they need to go, sooner."

Morning of the melodies Music and a few smooth dance moves were in play at a Seniors Festival Week rendition of Morning Melodies at Keysborough Learning Centre. The 8 October event was hosted by Evergreen Seniors Group - a relatively new social group for seniors. The proudly multicultural group organises events such as Mothers and Fathers day lunches, bingo, singalongs, day trips and guest speakers. It meets on the third Friday of the month, 10.30am-1.30pm.

Horse welfare protest hits MP’s office By Tanaka Nyamvura The sight of collapsed horses on the streets of Melbourne has resulted in protests outside the Endeavour Hills office of Roads Minister Luke Donnellan's office on 12 October. Protesters came armed with 30,000 petitions, all with the central message that horsedrawn carriages should be removed from the streets. "This strong response is further proof that people are sick and tired of seeing horses used and abused in this way," Melbourne Against Horse Drawn Carriages campaign director Kristin Leigh said. "The Road Safety Act still considers horses as vehicles, with no more consideration than a car or a truck. That has to change," she said. Horse-drawn vehicle drivers initially had their permits revoked in 2017 after the Lord Mayor of Melbourne cited safety concerns for both the operators and animals. But according to the State Government, the only responsibility operators have is to

A Hallam Senior College student's bright, inspiring vision is set to adorn the side of Wallara Australia buses. Year 11 Visual Communication and Design student Matthew Chmait's inclusive image won Wallara's 'Picture This' competition, and will now be a "mobile billboard" for the disability service. His image depicted many hands around the Globe with a slogan 'Not Me ... But Us.' The competition is held annually at two South-East schools to inspire students to depict social inclusion. This year, Hallam Senior College and Alkira Secondary College were the chosen schools. More than 60 entries were submitted from the Hallam school alone.

Art a refuge

MANDELA MY LIFE - A RARE INSIGHT INTO THE LIFE OF NELSON MANDELA!

By Cam Lucadou-Wells The need for connection - it’s something that struck Dandenong North artist Amir Tehrani hard when he fled Iran to Australia five years ago. Mr Tehrani is one of six asylum seekers and refugees selected to showcase their works at the City of Greater Dandenong’s HOME art exhibition. “When I arrived here we had lots of problems in communicating with people. “Different language, culture, ideas around the world - it makes people far away from each other.” One of his featured works Thread 1 graphically shows the ‘threads’ of connection. “It explores the idea of trying to find and stay connected while there are pressures tugging at the threads to pull us apart and fray these connections.” The former architect fled Iran and a comfortable lifestyle with his mother and wife due to threats to his personal safety. “I was in trouble with the government. In my country, you have to be quiet about lots of things like the regulations and rules of the government.” Mr Tehrani, his wife and his mother took a treacherous but incident-free journey by boat to Australia. At first out of sheer boredom during detention on Christmas Island, Mr Tehrani started drawing and painting for the first time since he was a child. When he settled on the mainland, he found his architectural experience came to nought. To practise as an architect, he needed to study again from scratch, followed by an internship. That would have taken about 10

Even though we get a lot of help, it was hard to survive.” So instead Mr Tehrani is studying art at Swinburne University, while working several part-time jobs to support his family. He found that art connected across culture, language and religion. It was a way for him to express - whether it was social commentary or capturing a mood through vibrant abstract colour and texture. “Art doesn’t need language. Everyone who communicates with art doesn’t have that boundary.” HOME is open at Walker Street Gallery, Dandenong from 18 October-24 November.

Lavey chalks up her 150 By Hayley Wildes

Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS

Rangers victorious in home opener By Hayley Wildes On Friday night in their WNBL home opener at Dandenong Stadium, the Dandenong Rangers simply couldn’t get their offence going. Despite their best efforts, their shots weren’t falling and the Sydney Uni Flames - led by Belinda Snell and Alex Bunton - were making everything. Trailing by eight points at half time, 42-34, the Rangers had plenty of work to do. In a first half that was marred by offensive woes, Dandenong was struggling to get out and run. The only player who was making strong inroads was Bec Cole, who led the Rangers with 13 first-half points. “I think for us, it’s a bit of a challenge when we come out and start playing slow,” Dandenong guard Tessa Lavey said. “They obviously came out and played really hard and made a lot of shots, but we just had

to weather that storm and focus on our game.” In the second half, things turned around. “[In the second half] we got to run and that’s our game - that’s how we got ourselves back into the game,” Lavey said. Cole, along with Lavey and Betnijah Laney, were exceptional in leading the Rangers back in the contest. Despite still trailing by seven points at the final break, the Rangers had found their defensive intensity and the spectators could sense the fourth quarter was going to be a tight one. Laney was simply superb. Not just in the fourth quarter when it mattered most, but all night. Her intensity and ability to secure key boards made her the most important player on the court. Captain Amelia Todhunter started the fourth quarter and was vital in lifting the team

with her tough defence. An 11-2 run to begin the fourth quarter saw the Rangers take the lead, 55-53, with 6.30 left in the game. Cole’s impact on the contest was profound. As well as being a guard who can score in a variety of ways, her toughness and willingness to take the big shots in crunch time stood out on Friday night. With two minutes remaining, the Rangers held a three-point lead, 63-60. It was Cole, of course, who drained the biggest shot of the night - a two-point jump shot - with 37 seconds remaining to guide the Rangers home, 66-62. Laney (17 points, 12 rebounds and 6 assists), Cole (21 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals) and Lavey (13 points and 3 rebounds) were all massive down the stretch.

Dandenong Ranger Tessa Lavey’s WNBL resume speaks for itself and in her 150th game on Friday night, she did exactly what she’s been doing for the previous nine seasons; burning the opposition with speed and intensity. Lavey, who often finds herself as the smallest player on the court, never takes a backwards step and knows how to utilise her strengths - speed being one of many - to wreak havoc on her opposition. In Lavey’s 150th, the Rangers got the win thanks to a thrilling final quarter comeback as she recorded 13 points, 3 rebounds and 2 assists. After the game, she reflected on the milestone. “You obviously have your ups and downs, but for me it’s been really awesome - I’ve been able to travel the country and see a lot of things and make a lot of new friends and family,” she said. “I was really surprised when [the milestone] came up, I just play and I love it. I’m just happy to be playing for this club.” Lavey also spoke about being a part of the Opals squad that claimed a silver medal at the FIBA World Cup last month - an experience she won’t soon forget. “It was an incredible experience,” she said. “I think it’s going to be something I look back on and be like ‘yeah, I was a part of that,’ and to beat Spain in Spain was just next level - I just can’t explain that feeling, it was just really cool.” After last season’s disappointing results, Lavey knows banking early season wins is of vital importance in the run to finals. “Last year we were really disappointed with our result - we felt like we had a team that could’ve gone a long way and we showed that; we beat Townsville twice last year and they went on to win the championship,” she said. “I think it’s really important to get these early wins, especially the close ones, because when it comes down to it, you want these wins on the board as you head towards finals.” As one of the leaders of this Rangers squad, there’s no doubt that Lavey will have a huge say in Dandenong’s season. And that bodes well for a great season ahead.

Dandenong falls to Bendigo on the road By Hayley Wildes After two impressive wins to begin their WNBL season, the Dandenong Rangers struggled mightily against the Bendigo Spirit on Saturday night. In a tough back-to-back game, the Rangers’ offence stalled after half-time and the Sprit’s offence did the exact opposite. With three minutes remaining in the first quarter, the Rangers trailed 18-10, but an Amelia Todhunter and-one started a Dandenong revival just as it looked like the Spirit was ready to take the game away from the Rangers. At quarter time, Dandenong had cut the deficit to just one-point, 20-19. After Bendigo’s Rebecca Tobin scored the first bucket of the second quarter, Dandenong came alive on offence and went on a barnstorming 13-0 run. But the Spirit didn’t go away. Led by Tobin, Bendigo forced its way back 30 STAR JOURNAL

into the contest and at half time it was anyone’s game with Dandenong leading by three points, 38-35. For the Rangers, Kayla Pedersen was in fine form and pacing the offence, while Carley Mijovic was also playing a vital role. Bendigo’s Marena Whittle hit a triple on the opening possession of the third quarter and it was a sign of things to come. By halfway through the quarter, the Rangers were in deep trouble as the Spirit went on a 15-4 run to open the second half. The Spirit’s defensive intensity was forcing the Rangers into tough shots and turnovers. Finally - when Kiera Rowe knocked down a triple - the Rangers had produced buckets on consecutive offensive trips and trailed by just five points, 52-47, despite being completely outplayed. But Bendigo’s Nat Hurst answered with a triple of her own and it sparked a 9-3 Spirit run to end the third quarter. At the final break,

Monday, 22 October, 2018

Dandenong trailed 61-50 after being outscored 26-12 in the quarter. Needing a lot to go right in the fourth quarter to turn things around, the Rangers only dug themselves a deeper hole as the Spirit scored four quick points to force Rangers coach Larissa Anderson to call an early fourth-quarter timeout. The timeout did little to slow the Spirit as their staunch defence was leading to simply irresistible offence. The Rangers never found their way back into the contest as Bendigo outscored Dandenong 26-15 in the fourth to run away with a big win, 87-65. It was a disappointing second half fadeout from the Rangers, who now own a 2-1 record. Pedersen (15 rebounds and 13 points) did all she could for Dandenong, but there simply wasn’t enough offensive output across the board. The Rangers face the Perth Lynx on Sunday from 3pm at Dandenong Stadium in Round 3.

SPORT

Wintry weather returns By Russell Bennett

Dandenong Premier Cricket star Tom Donnell again made a start after play finally got underway on Saturday. awe-inspiring for the Southern Stars as the left-armer claimed the impressive figures of 4/14 from nine overs in Australia’s one day international victory over Pakistan in Malaysia on Saturday. Batting first, Australia posted 7/273 thanks in no small part to skipper Meg Lanning’s 12th

one-day ton and first since her return from shoulder surgery. Then it was Molineux’s turn to shine as Pakistan was dismissed for 123 - sealing an unassailable series win for the Aussies after game two of the three-game series. In the Dandenong District Cricket Associa-

Brown claims top honour Greyhound racing administrator and historian Neil Brown was awarded the Ken Carr Medal at the 2017/18 Victorian Greyhound Awards at Melbourne’s Crown Casino recently. Named in honour of the late Kenneth Russell Carr, a leading Victorian greyhound racing administrator, the Ken Carr Medal is considered the highest award for excellence within the Victorian greyhound racing industry. Neil’s contribution to greyhound racing in various roles over a 50-year period is almost unparalleled, including his current positions as publicity

officer for Greyhound Clubs Australia and the chairman of the Sandown Greyhound Racing Club. Meanwhile, Black Opium continued the electrifying start to her career with a breathtaking debut at Sandown Park on Thursday night. After dominating a Vic Bred Maiden series at Bendigo recently, she jumped as the near unbackable $1.30 favourite. Beginning well, she swooped around the field before unleashing down the back straight. Her winning margin was five-and-a-half lengths to Unique Edition in a fast (5.10, 18.76) 29.34. “To do what she’s done to-

night in her first look at the track is brilliant,” handler Brad Keel said post-race. Black Opium has now notched up four wins from just as many starts and is already performing in elite fashion at a youthful age of just 18-and-a-half months. The question now raised is whether connections will set her an aim for next month’s TAB Melbourne Cup. It’s a race her owners Serg and Bill Buccilli claimed in 2013 with Black Opium’s sire Black Magic Opal. “To be honest, we haven’t even thought about it. We’ll need to have a good think and assess the options,” Serg Buccilli said.

senior games - both synthetic and turf - were called off. Springvale South’s Round 2 showdown with Berwick at Alex Nelson Reserve will take place this coming Saturday, along with the rest of the round’s action.

While the wintry weather returned to wreak havoc on cricket grounds right across the south-east on Saturday, the incredible curators at Shepley Oval in Dandenong worked tirelessly in a bid to allow 48 overs to be bowled - despite play being delayed until just after 3.30pm. The Panthers were hosting Melbourne Uni in their Round 4 Victorian Premier Cricket clash and were sent in under ominous skies after losing the toss. The star opening batting combination of skipper Tom Donnell (25) and Brett Forsyth (12) combined for just 22 in their first wicket stand before Forsyth became the first of Steve Reid’s three victims - caught behind by keeper-batsman Jarrod Martignago. Donnell fell soon after at 2/49, bowled by AJ Gregory, and continued the tone of Panthers batsmen departing just when they’d made a start. No less than five Dandenong batsmen reached double figures throughout the day’s play, but Donnell and Lincoln Edwards (33) were the only two to pass 20. In fact Donnell has departed in the 20s in three of his four hits so far this season - the other being a stellar unbeaten 90 in Round 3 against Northcote. Edwards looked in fine touch on Saturday until he was bowled by Liam Scammell - the first of his two scalps as he finished with the impressive 2/8 from his five overs. It was Reid who was the biggest shining light in the Melbourne Uni attack as he finished with 3/27 from his 14 overs, while Wes Agar (1/29) was the other wicket-taker. It’s important to note that the Victorian Premier Cricket firsts, seconds and fourths will play a Rule 18 one-dayer next Saturday, while the thirds will continue their Round 4 twodayer. In other Dandenong Cricket Club news, young spinner Sophie Molineux was simply
