Local groups unite for secure future on Safe Plate Day
Local residents, police and community groups came together on Saturday at Berwick Waters for Safe Plate Day.
By Jessica Anstice The community event was coordinated by Casey Neighbourhood Watch, Frasers Property Australia and Sikh Volunteers Australia, who were on hand on the day to fit anti-theft screws to vehicle number plates. There was also a spotlight put on safety inside cars with free child car-seat checks and child safety restraint fittings. Representatives from the National Motor Vehicle Theft Reduction Council were on hand to install GPS anti-theft vehicle trackers as part of a joint initiative with Victoria Police.
Wet weather didn't deter more than 100 people from attending, with the Lions Club of Berwick and Lions Club of Narre Warren keeping them well fed with a fundraising sausage sizzle. The GPS trackers and child car-seat safety checks proved most popular. "It was great to see people come together on the day to support an important community safety initiative," Frasers Property Australia residential Victoria general manager Sarah Bloom said. "Safe Plate Day really highlighted how strong the local community is."
Lights unplugged ly working with the residents of Hugo Court over the past few months to assist them in establishing their annual Christmas lights event, due to issues experienced last year, which resulted in police shutting the event down. "Last year, traffic management was the main cause of concern," City of Casey's Active Communities manager Callum Pattie said. "In addition to visitors not abiding by parking restrictions and parking across other properties driveways, people consuming alcohol, public urination, litter, noise and disruptions to other properties adjacent to Hugo Court. "Earlier this year, council officers distributed a survey to residents in and around Hugo Court to ask them about last year's event." 121 properties returned the survey and stated that they were in support of the event, however approximately 80 percent of responses said that they had encountered issues as a direct result of the event. that the land between the road and up to and including the footpath is owned by the council. "Public liability is covered already by the local council. The road where cars park is owned by Vic Roads," he said. "Insurance for these is covered for the vehicles by their individual car insurance and for pedestrians by their individual car registration." Mr Kogtevs responded to the Hugo Court Christmas Lights post with, "You do not advertise the lights nor do you charge admission. "Provided you don't invite people onto your properties (which you don't) then the liability is not yours. "I would definitely seek legal advice as I don't believe the council can stop you individually from putting up lights. "Whether people walk your particular street is none of your concern." Mr Kogtevs encouraged the residents of Hugo Court to "Please fight this". City of Casey Events Team have been active-

The Narre Warren residents behind the scenes of the Hugo Court Christmas lights have announced the tradition will come to an end. With thousands of visitors from across the region and beyond mesmerised by the lights each year; it has become too big. The Hugo Court Christmas Lights Facebook page informed the community of their decision on 13 October, stating that due to the number of visitors the court attracts each year it is classed as an event. To run an event, they must supply traffic management and public liability insurance. The post stated, "As we do the lights for fun, for us to pay these costs it is no longer fun so unfortunately Hugo Court Christmas Lights is no longer. There will be no lights this year at all." In a post following, the Facebook page wrote, "To organize everything that we now have to do as an event is very time consuming,
we would have to basically form a committee, creating an official group to be able to apply for the insurances and to handle the money side of things. "We are all extremely busy and just don't have the time to organize all of the requirements. "Another reason is out of respect for our neighbours in the surrounding streets, they have to put up with not being able to get into their properties, noise, rubbish, people parking on their lawns even people urinating on their front lawns." The residents of Hugo Court received much support from the community, along with idea on ways in which they could keep the tradition alive. One user suggested the neighbours create a GoFundMe page and another suggested the neighbours could take it in turns by only decorating one house per year. Resident Aaron Kogtevs was supported by 350 reactions on this comment which stated

New off-leash dog park for the south-east By Jessica Anstice South-Eastern residents and their four-legged friends will have a new place to stretch their legs and enjoy the outdoors, with a new local dog park. A re-elected Labor government will invest
$5 million to build 15 new off-leash dog parks across Melbourne, and will work with Casey Council to identify an under-utilised park or reserve that is suitable for the new enclosed dog park. "This brand-new park will mean local families have somewhere they can enjoy get-
ting outdoors and letting their dog off-leash safely," member for Narre Warren North Luke Donnellan said. Member for Narre Warren South Judith Graley said, "Having somewhere safe to let our four legged-friends off-leash is so important."
Police believe the same vehicle was involved in a ram raid just minutes after at a liquor store on O’Shea Road, Berwick.
Ram raids in south Police are investigating following two ram raids in the south eastern suburbs last month. It is believed three masked men drove a Nissan Navara through the back of a hardware store on the South Gippsland Highway shortly before 5am on 29 September. The car drove through the store before exiting out the front entrance, however nothing was taken from the premises. Police believe the same vehicle was involved in a ram raid just minutes after at a liquor store on O'Shea Road, Berwick. The vehicle smashed into the store before driving away.

Fashion hits the streets Friday 19 October saw High Street came alive with fashion, fun and food thanks to the annual Berwick VIP Festival. Proudly presented by the Berwick Business Group, the fashion festival is firmly entrenched on the Berwick calendar. This year's festival was extended to include a full day of sales and specials between 10am and 9pm. Guests enjoyed workshops, shopping, indulged in lunch and sampled what local traders have to offer. Festival-goers were then treated to all the catwalk action in Kempson Walk from 6.30pm, which was followed by a glass of Champagne and in-store sales. Spokesperson Magda D'Abaco said the jam-packed event was the ideal opportunity for locals to experience the unique and exciting stores Berwick has to offer.
"The festival is all about bringing the community into Berwick to see what our amazing businesses can offer," Magda said. "We really want to show people that you can stay local and do all your shopping here." Ms D'Abaco said the Berwick Business Group was overwhelmed with the positive feedback the festival has received. "The feedback from the businesses has been overwhelming and it's great to see just how much locals are supporting the community and coming into (Berwick) to shop, browse and eat," she said. "All our gift bags were sent out which was great. We had anywhere from 400 to 450 ladies participating throughout the day but the catwalk at night was a complete success ... there was standing room only!"

Cranbourne-Narre Relay for Life is hosting the King of the Wing competition for the second year in a row. The participants are to eat as many wings as they can in 10 minutes at Casey Fields Athletics track on Saturday 18 November at 6.30pm.
Relay for Life set to really ‘wing’ it Cranbourne-Narre Relay for Life is hosting a King of the Wing competition which challenges Cranbourne-Narre Relay for Life participants to eat as many chicken wings as they can in 10 minutes. Relay for Life is a pro-health event and the committee stress that food eating competitions should be infrequent and in this case, only to raise valuable funds for the Cancer Council.
King of the Wing is not only fun but most importantly about the bucks not the clucks! King of the Wing participants will include representatives from the Cranbourne Police and Fire Brigade. The Cranbourne-Narre Relay for Life committee is ecstatic that the local community is getting on board to raise awareness and funds for the Cancer Council.
The King of the Wing event will be held as part of the Cranbourne-Narre Relay for Life at Casey Fields Athletics track on Saturday 18 November at 6.30pm. This year's Cranbourne-Narre Relay for Life event aims to raise $70,000. The current total is over $36,000 with their fundraising efforts including a recent tin-shake in Berwick.
From page 1. "The Events Team have been working with the residents to explore potential traffic management solutions, training for interested volunteers in traffic management practices and potential ways to run the event with the assistance of local community groups," Mr Pattie said. "The residents of Hugo Court determined last week that they did not wish to proceed in running an event this year. "The City of Casey is disappointed that the actions of some visitors last year has now resulted in the residents not wishing to proceed with what was considered a great community event." Cr Rosalie Crestani said she hasn't been approached by the residents of Hugo Court but the door is open to them. "I am willing to help them in any way I can," she said. "On a wider scale I'd like to see every home decorated with Christmas lights so that the whole city can celebrate. That would be up to each resident. "I'd like to call for a Christmas light extravaganza this year. With solar power and energy saver LED, it provides a low cost way to turn each home in to a sparkling reminder that we are in the season of hope." Cr Crestani said she was so proud to have her colleagues support in achieving a Christmas nativity scene and a 20 foot Christmas tree in the plaza at Bunjil Place that will be there annually, which will appear towards the end of November. "On top of that, we established an annual Christmas decoration fund to ensure we always have time and money for Christmas in our beautiful city," she said. "Casey Council and community are definitely in favour of Christmas celebrations. After all, we have been dubbed the 'Bible belt of the South East'."

IN BRIEF
Attacked own mum By Cam Lucadou-Wells A 15-year-old girl has pleaded guilty to a sustained attack on her mother for 'stealing' the girl's clothes, a children's court has heard. The girl, whose name and address can't be identified, was also facing six counts of failing to appear in court while on bail for the past 12 months. The court heard that the alleged assault happened when she returned home from school nearly a year ago. During her violent rage, she struck her mother with a photo frame. Then she threatened her with various makeshift weapons such as a chair, scissors, a metal pipe of a vacuum cleaner and a kitchen
knife, the court heard. During the struggle, the mother tried to ward away her two younger sons. She defended herself with a plastic box as the girl lashed out with the vacuum cleaner pipe. Police arrested her at the house. She made full admissions in a police interview, though denied she threatened her mother with a pair of scissors. "I wouldn't hurt my mum," she told police. "I lose control because she takes my clothes every day." According to state authorities, her father - separated from the family - had a history of inflicting family violence, the girl's lawyer told the court.
"It seems the family has been in some turmoil for some time." The magistrate noted the girl's lack of prior history and domestic upheaval. She was likely to be put on a court diversion program, the judge said. The magistrate noted her young age, available treatments and her continued attendance at school. She had been picked up by police in another suburb after she knocked on doors in a bid to charge her phone early that morning. "You would have been better off in bed and getting ready for school," the magistrate said. She was bailed to appear at a children's court at a later date for a diversion assessment.
Parents can now head back to school The successful English for Parents program started at Hillsmeade Early Learning Centre in partnership with Narre Community Learning Centre to meet the needs of parents of nonEnglish speaking backgrounds. 30 percent of the families who access the Early Learning Centre's services are from Afghanistan and speak Dari as their main language. The program provides a great opportunity for mothers to meet together to learn English, and as a result, feel more confident interacting with others. Eventually, as their English improves, these parents will be able to participate more fully in the life of the Early Learning Centre and consider study or entry level employment options. During the weekly session, a Dari speaking child care support worker is able to look after the children while their parents are studying. The teacher herself, Kai Ni Gu, speaks Mandarin as an additional language.
Man charged following Narre Warren sexual assault Transit Crime Investigation Unit detectives have charged a man following an incident on a bus from Hallam to Narre Warren last month. It's alleged a 17-year-old girl boarded a bus on Frawley Road Hallam just after 1.50pm on 17 September. A man allegedly approached the victim, removed her bag from the seat and placed it on her lap. He then allegedly sexually assaulted the victim before disembarking the bus. A 46-year-old Dandenong man was arrested today and has been charged with one count of sexual assault. He has been bailed to appear at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 20 December.
Dangerous ride leads to an expensive destination Members from Casey Highway Patrol intercepted a 2014 Yamaha XVS650 motorcycle on Golf Links Road, Narre Warren At approximately 6pm on Sunday, 14 October. The 30 year old male rider from Narre Warren South did not hold a motorcycle licence, was not wearing a motorcycle helmet and enquiries revealed the motorcycle he was riding was also not registered. The rider received a total of over $1600 in infringement notices and three demerit points, he was also arrested in relation to an unrelated outstanding warrant for which he was charged and bailed to attend Dandenong Magistrates' Court later this month.

Shiona Watsona and and Kai Ni Gu. The parents are very keen to continue their studies this year and next year. They are looking forward to being able to learn some computer skills, which will be in-
cluded in the program. For further information about the program, please contact Clea Nicol at Narre Community Learning Centre on 9070 3831 or 9704 7388.

THE LOWDOWN Q&A
with Arj Barker
How passionate are you about MotoGP racing? Well to be honest, I don't know a whole lot about it, but I think it's fantastic that these doctors are able to have an exciting hobby outside of their busy work hours. What are you looking forward to about the Cranbourne Wave Off? When they approached me, they asked if I was afraid of heights. So that tells me there are heights involved, and that's a lot different to the gigs I usually get, so I'm looking forward to getting high (literally - I know this is a family event!). Have you been to the MotoGP at Phillip Island? I have not, unless I have, but something happened that made forget, like an alien abduction, or a massive conk on the head. But I don't think so. You are appearing at Bunjil Place on October 26. What can fans expect? They can expect to laugh a lot and have a fantastic time, and thus remind themselves why they came along in the first place, sort of like a cool self-fulfilling prophecy. Will you include your GP wave off experience in your Narre Warren show? It's possible. It really just depends how the day goes, and if something funny happens. I'll try! What would you say to mums and dads who are going to turn out with their kids to see you wave off the riders? I will give them my word that I will keep the swearing down to an absolute medium. JK, I'll keep it clean. Can't speak for the GPs though - it's race day, and they've got an Rx for moto madness!
Arj Barker.
THREE ‌ fashion tips for horse racing carnivals...
1
Be strict about dressing for the season. There is always one main thing judges will look out for - and that is, wearing seasonappropriate fabrics, millinery and accessories. For spring/summer wear straw, silk, sinamay and any trans-seasonal fabrics.
2
Majority rules. When entering a fashions on the field competition there is often anywhere from three to five judges. The judges have to make a decision on who will win, which means they must agree on just one person. This is tough for entrants because you want to have your own signature style, but at the same time, if it's a little out there, you may not please the majority of the judges.
3
Research the judges. If you find a race-enthusiast-turned-judge, you can often tell what their personal style is. Are they more classic, fashion forward or vintage? If you know a judge and what styles they lean towards, you can determine whether to wear a certain style of outfit.

BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION THIS WEEKEND!
Ricky Sutton, Rino Travaglini, Eddie Travaglini and Rebecca Parker of Australian Butchers Store are Picture: GARY SISSONS excited to be heading home to Berwick. 186002
Australian Butchers Store is heading to Berwick. But for owner Eddie Travaglini, the store's opening is more of a homecoming. The Travaglini name is synonymous with the Aussie butcher industry. For most, it's linked to Tasman Butchers, while others will relate it to Brookmere Meats. Both are correct. Tasman Butchers opened in Berwick in 1991, the brainchild of Eddie's father, Rino Travaglini. Having worked in the meat industry since the early 1960s, Rino knew a thing or two about the competitive business and the Enterprise Avenue store became a local institution, as well as one of the first 'big-box' Tasman Meat stores. Over time, the store traded as both Tasman Meat and Brookmere Meats, but upheld the same philosophy; "the service must be great, the quality must be perfect and the price must be low". The Travaglinis remained a part of Tasman until 2013, when the company was sold. But unable to stay away from the industry for too long, Eddie and Rino opened Australian Butchers Store in Dandenong in 2015. Then, in September 2018, it was announced that Tasman Meats had entered administration and the Berwick store was up for sale. Eddie, who had expanded his Australian Butchers Store chain to include stores in Mernda, Boronia and Somerville in just three years, admits that he jumped at the chance to purchase the Tasman store and "return home". "Berwick was the first of the big Tasmans," he said. "I remember when there were paddocks
and an airstrip behind us. Where the university is there was an airstrip and we used to sit there at lunchtime and watch the planes come in over Clyde Road ... So taking it back is like the jewel in the crown. It's an institution business and it's something I'm really proud of. "It's our grassroots, so getting it back means everything." When Eddie reopens the store, it will trade as Australian Butchers Store offering premium quality wholesale meat, poultry, game and gourmet products. With roughly 106 employees, Australian Butchers Store supply products to chefs, restaurateurs, catering companies and local families. Eddie said he "absolutely" learnt from his time at Tasman. "You're always learning and you're always looking to perfecting what you're doing," Eddie said. "The mentality (of Australian Butchers Store) is probably the same as we've always had, and the theory behind the business is the same, but what we offer is a bigger range. The range is everything as far as I'm concerned we try to offer multiples of everything. "Customer service is still number one; you look after them, they keep coming back." Excited about the newest chapter in the Australian Butchers Store story, Eddie will take over Berwick Tasman on 29 October. The store will only be closed for a few days for refurbishment. "I just want people to know that we're back and it's going to reopen with a bang. We're going to give the Berwick community back what they deserve." RSL poppy sales help to support veterans, families In the next weeks Berwick RSL volunteers will be selling the much-loved, iconic red poppy. One hundred per cent of the proceeds will go to support current and former service men and women in need. Poppies were among the first plants to bloom in the devastated battlefields of France and Belgium, and since 1921, they have been used in remembrance of those who fell during war. "The Poppy Appeal holds a special place in the hearts of Aussies, and as we wear our poppy this year, we thank the men and women who fought for Australia 100 years ago and today," state president Dr Rob Webster said. "This year we commemorate the Centenary of the Armistice to end the First World War, where Australians gave their lives for the free-
dom we enjoy today." You can purchase your poppy from your local RSL, from volunteer collectors in your community, at Woolworths and Officeworks stores or donate online at poppyappeal.com.au.

Beaconhills College Year 9 students have taken the initiative to assist people experiencing or at risk of homelessness by creating care packages. One group of students made and sold cupcakes around the school yard and raised money to buy products to create 20 packs. Another group wrote to many manufacturers requesting donations and received an incredible number of products to make another 20 care packs, particularly for women. The last group decided that the pets of people experiencing homelessness also need support so they created 'Pet Care Packs' from donations from around the school. On Thursday 18 October the students pre-

FOCUS ON … BEACONSFIELD
History on a plate Beaconsfield's Corner Post Cafe mixes the vibrant beauty of the town's history with gourmet food and excellent coffee. Built in 1878, the building was originally the town's Post Office and operated as such until 2001. Much of the original building is still intact today; a feature which store owner Stewart Saw says contributes to the cafe's homely setting. "This cafe offers a different setting to sit with friends or family and enjoy a meal and coffee," Stewart explained. "It has both indoor and outdoor seating and because it's an old house, you can sit in different rooms instead of (just) one." With an in-house designed menu, The Corner Post's chefs are renowned for taking great care in the preparation of each and every meal. And with the cafe's head chef having international experience, customers are bound to find a menu that not only excites them but makes

Cardinia Beaconhills Golf Links recently celebrated its 70th anniversary. With recent renovations to the clubhouse and continual improvements to the 27 hole layout, the course and facilities have never looked better. Five of the fairways on the Lakes Nine have had couch laid and the Hills Course has had new cart paths installed, new drains laid and several bunkers renovated. Footgolf - golf that is played with a soccer ball into a large hole - has been up and running for three years now and proves a hit with the kids during school holidays. It’s also a pop-
ular activity for groups looking for something different to do to celebrate an occasion or a fun way to work on some fitness. With the weather warming up, the staff at Cardinia Beaconhills are ready for a busy summer with many local businesses holding Christmas functions at the course. Functions can include a game of golf or footgolf, followed by a beautiful meal and drinks after the round. Daylight savings also sees the bistro open on Wednesday evenings for a meal after twilight nine hole golf. Sunday sessions with tapas and live music on the deck is also back.

Lady with a big heart celebrated
By Jessica Anstice
By Brendan Rees A child educator described as a "woman with a heart of gold" has been honoured for dedicating half-a-century of teaching and bringing fun to children's lives. It has been 50 years since Judy Clarkson began looking after four children at her family home in Cranbourne - which became the birth of her kindergarten empire. Since then, Cranbourne Day Care and Kindergarten Centre have grown to include six centres catering for some 800 Casey families. Hundreds gathered on Saturday 13 October to celebrate Ms Clarkson's milestone in providing a fun, learning atmosphere for children. Daughter Sharon Smith said it all began from humble beginnings when her mother welcomed four children into her home in 1968 so her sister could have a "playmate" while she and her brother Howard went to Cranbourne North Primary school. She said this number quickly grew to registering 16 children by the end of the same year. "Alongside my dear father Ivan they both became a great team - working long hours together doing everything from cooking the hot meals for those in their care to even hanging out the washed nappies." Sharon said her mother felt it was important to be part of the Cranbourne community, adding their staff had "been a significant part of this amazing journey." By the 1970s, the centres had grown to care for 119 children. "I was at high school during this time and I recall ever so proudly telling my school friends that 'my mother owns the big-

Coordinator of the centre in Mundaring Drive, Cranbourne, Alison Marshall said Judy held "a special place in my heart." "Not only is she a smart, courageous and an incredible business woman, but also, a loving and caring mother, grandmother, great grandmother, friend and dog owner," she said. "Jude was the cook and created the ever popular sausage stew and mince steak that have stood the test of time." Casey Deputy Mayor Cr Amanda Stapledon described Judy as a "trailblazer." she has raised to be like-minded and just as committed, she is also a mother to so many in Cranbourne," she said. "Judy is a visionary, an entrepreneur and a woman with a heart of gold. She and her hard working family are providing quality and beneficial outcomes for Cranbourne." Cranbourne Day Care and Kindergarten Centre will continue their 50th anniversary celebrations with a family fun day on Saturday 24 November. The event will kick off at 11am-3pm at Pyrenees Road, Clyde (behind Shopping on Clyde). A new Headspace outreach program will be implemented in Victoria to boost access to mental health services. Headspace offers critical support to youths experiencing mental health or drug and alcohol issues but, especially for young people living in rural or remote Victoria, services can be out of reach. Shadow Minister for Mental Health Emma Kealy announced a Liberal Nationals Government will fund this. "If elected, we'll provide $1.14 million in grants over four years for Headspace to provide outreach services to communities in Regional Victoria and Melbourne," she said. "These new outreach services will make sure young people can get the help they need, close to home and break down barriers to access, especially in rural areas where there is limited public transport." Programs could include social events for young people or regular outreach health services in communities without a permanent headspace location. "Headspace has had great success in engaging youth with mental health and drug and alcohol problems, but we can do better in Victoria to support our young people," Ms Kealy said. "We must make sure all young people can get the mental health support they need - regardless of where they live." Local Headspace facilities are located in Narre Warren, Pakenham and Dandenong.

SPORT
Tom’s a real speed demon By Russell Bennett Tom Bramich pilots what are essentially rocket ships on two wheels, but there's so much more to his journey as a motorcycle racer than just outright speed. The Beaconsfield 21-year-old has composure, maturity, discipline, racing IQ and sheer talent in equal measure - all the ingredients of a champion. Testament to that is Bramich following in the footsteps of Aussie motorsport legends such as Mick Doohan and Daryl Beattie as winners of the coveted RK Chains Samurai Trophy. The annual award, presented earlier this month, recognised Bramich as Australia's most improved and outstanding young talent both on track, and off - during the 2018 Australian Superbike Championship (ASBK) season. The trophy - one of the most iconic in Aussie motorsport - capped off a remarkable season for Bramich, who earlier claimed the Australian Supersport 300 title. He races all around Australia at the nation's most iconic racetracks, and capped off his Supersport title in style last weekend with a win at Phillip Island. His remarkable consistency is one of his biggest strengths, but he'd be the first to make one key admission - there's no way he could achieve what he has to this point without his incredible support network behind him, including his family, friends, sponsors and crew. Bramich raced in two classes this year - Supersport 300, a premier class including a range of different manufacturers and bikes; and the R3 Cup, an incentive-based Yamaha cup. It was at South Australia's Tailem Bend where Bramich qualified in pole position, and picked up a pair of wins and a second-place finish - where he first started to believe he could be in contention for this year's Supersport title. Another key factor behind Bramich's success this season was Trevor Manley, who he worked with to continually improve his bike. "Trevor went above and beyond every single time to make our bike better and faster," he added. Not only did Bramich clinch the title at Phillip Island, he also picked up a race win to do so. He said simply focusing on winning the race kept any potential distraction of his place in the championship out of his mind. "The thing in our class is that you can't be conservative - you have to always try and at-
Picture: COURTESY OF RUSSELL COLVIN tack and go for the lead, otherwise you'll just end up nowhere," he said. "I think that really helped me narrow my focus because I just knew I couldn't think that way. It was actually easier to try and go for the win than to just try and conserve points. "Winning the championship, the main feeling was relief - and just feeling so happy for everyone who helped me get there; all my sponsors, Trevor, my mum and dad, and everyone else. "I get all the glory of being on the bike and winning, but without the people behind me and backing me it wouldn't be possible for me to even be there. "I was just so happy for the people who'd done so much to help me get there. Just having your team believe in you, no matter what, makes such a huge difference. It doesn't just all come together - you have to have the team, the bike, and then the rider." Moving forward, Bramich is weighing up his options - which could lead to competing in Europe next season. "I really hope it opens up a few opportunities to race in the World Championship - that's where I'd like to set my sights - or to race here domestically on a 600 Supersport bike," he said. "We've got a fair few options to consider and we have to work through those in the next few weeks." But he knows those options wouldn't even be possible if not for the support he's received along the way so far. "With a lot of friends and local businesses in the area, it made it possible for us to even race," he said. "They've been a great support, not only in terms of sponsorship, but just their support at the track.
Tom Bramich is a star on the rise on two wheels. "Just them being there means they believe in me, and when we win, we all win together and that's the fun part." His is an extremely expensive, logistically challenging sport to travel to, and compete, all over the country. "It's an expensive sport, and without people helping you it wouldn't be possible to do. It's just the nature of the sport," he said. When it comes to the key to his success in 2018, it's impossible to look past Bramich's remarkable consistency. He didn't finish off the overall podium at any one round, with third his lowest result.
Picture: RUSSELL BENNETT He also didn't have any race DNFs (Did Not Finish) to his name. He puts this, in part, down to his analytical way of thinking while riding, and his ability to execute a carefully-calculated strategy. "I don't think I'm the fastest outright rider, but I'm probably one of the smartest," he said. Bramich was keen to thank his sponsors in helping him achieve the remarkable in 2018. They include: Yamaha Motor Australia, JLT Sport, Nolan Helmets, Ricondi, Forma Boots, TM Performance, Nelsigns, Autobarn Narre Warren, Extreme Clean, Boardpro, SJG Plumbing, Northside Prestige, and Pablo's Motorcycle Tyres.
Meadows making it count By Russell Bennett For the Devon Meadows Cricket Club and its faithful, the unfurling of the Panthers' 2017/18 WGCA District division premiership flag on Saturday signified more about what's to come than what has just transpired. The Panthers are hell-bent on making their 50th season one to remember. Since last season it had been around 15 years since their last first XI premiership - with a number of disappointing finishes to promising campaigns along the way. And now that they're into the Premier division for the first time since the competition restructure, they're doing everything they can to stay there. "We've probably got a bit more depth this year, which you obviously need for the Premier grade," club president Mick Floyd said at the flag unfurling on Saturday morning. "A lot of clubs have gone up to Premier (from District) and either just held on or gone back down straight away for various reasons, so we were pretty determined for that not to happen with us. "We found before the restructure (from A Grade to Premier, District, Sub-District) that we were that side that would win three, four, berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au
or five games so we were never really in relegation danger but were never really a finals contender either. It doesn't improve your cricket if you're not playing in meaningful games for large parts of the season. "It was important in the off-season to add a bit of depth and not have to rely on one or two guys, because if they happen to have a bad day you could be in strife. "We've got a list with depth with bat and ball - we bat right down, with seven or eight bowling options as well. "We're a little on the older side - we're not shying away from that - but there are some good kids coming through as well. "The junior numbers are good - we've got five junior sides in - and we're starting to see some of the benefits now with good young players coming through. "We've added a fifth (senior) side for the first time ever in our 50th year too. We talk about it being a big year, and we've added another side - and we've got players spare. "It would have been nice to get into the Premier division a few years prior, but things have all worked out really well. But the Panthers, long viewed from the outside as a club that should have been mixing it with the big boys of Premier, aren't content with just making up the numbers in the WGCA's top flight. "We want to go up and ultimately win the Premier division," Floyd said. "Winning District is nice, but it's second
division. We've always considered ourselves as a Premier club - one of the leading clubs in the competition off the field - and now we've got the opportunity to do it on the field, and to prove it. "The number of well wishes we had after winning the flag last season was fantastic, but also the sentiment from a lot of people was 'it's about time'. It was, and now we're in the top grade it's time we make a fist of it there." Thursday, 25 October, 2018

Locals sweep key awards There was a strong local flavour at the 2017/18 Victorian Greyhound Awards at Melbourne's Crown Casino recently. In a great night for local greyhound followers, Sandown chairman Neil Brown was awarded the Ken Carr Medal for excellence within the Victorian greyhound racing industry, while breeder/owner/trainer Ashlee Terry was awarded the Ned Bryant 'Silver Fox' Award. The Ken Carr Medal is considered the highest award for excellence within the Victorian greyhound racing industry and Brown - a greyhound administrator and historian - has held roles in greyhound racing for almost 50 years. "I'm never lost for words but my family have kept a great secret here," Brown said. "I'll steal a word from the late Ron Nestor who said he got more out of the sport than he ever put in, and I feel the same." Brown has bred and trained greyhounds, been a member on the Victorian Greyhound of the Year Panel, the original Topgun Panel and still contributes greatly to the GRV's Hall of Fame Committee, as well as having held the position of CEO at Greyhounds Australasia. It was a chance introduction for Brown that started his love for greyhound racing. "I was waiting to buy footy finals tickets outside MCG, and a friend I was with said let's go across to Olympic Park and have a look at the races," he said. "From that moment I was hooked and, living near Sandown Park, I began going there every Thursday night, which I still do today." Terry, a 27-year-old greyhound breeder and trainer from Cranbourne South claimed the Ned Bryant 'Silver Fox' Award - recognising outstanding achievement in the training, breeding or promotion of greyhound racing. Terry claimed her first Group 1 win as a trainer with Maja Mahi Mahi in the 2017 Sapphire Crown and has had stunning success as
Neil Brown with the Ken Carr Medal. a breeder also. "I'm very honoured and very surprised and a little bit nervous," Terry said. "Andrew [Paraskevas] and I bred the litters together, and it's probably a bit more special when you breed them yourself because you've had them since they were puppies and you watch them grow up and race and be successful. It is probably something everyone in the sport dreams to do." Terry thanked Andrew Paraskevas, along with trainer and rearer, Karen Leek. "I've wanted to be a greyhound trainer since I was five years old and I think we've improved a lot since we've been trainers," she said. "I couldn't imagine doing anything else it's very much a passion of mine."

Wet weather hits WGCA cricket hard By Russell Bennett and Hayley Wildes WEST GIPPSLAND CRICKET ASSOCIATION REVIEW - ROUND 3 On a Saturday marred by wet weather, most games across the West Gippsland Cricket Association were abandoned. PREMIER Only Clyde's clash with Cardinia was completed, with the contest reduced to 35 overs per side. Batting first, Clyde was dismissed for 146 with - once again - a host of batsmen making starts but falling at inopportune times, often due to rash shots. Seven Cougars batsmen reached double figures, but only quick bowler Nick Sadler's invaluable 45-run cameo made any lasting impact, while Travis Wheller (3/16) and Matt Welsh (3/20) were the pick of the Bulls bowlers. Cardinia opener, skipper Alex Nooy, scored a quickfire 39 runs, before falling with his side still on just 3/47. AJ Walker also made a start, before falling to Shane White, but it was Wheller (48) who capped off his strong bowling effort with an elegant knock with the bat and essentially steered his side home. The Bulls (7/150) ultimately won by three wickets in the 32nd over - a result against a fellow finals aspirant that could prove crucial in shaping the eventual make-up of the top four. DISTRICT Cranbourne Meadows remain undefeated after proving to be too strong for the Bullants at Officer. Officer was sent into bat and contributions from Ash Smith (42), Peter Symons (26) and James Parnall (23 not out) helped the Bullants post a total of 5/136 in 27 overs. Ashish Uppal (2/26) bowled well for the Rebels.
AJ Walker punches this shot through the off-side in Cardinia's Premier clash with Clyde. 186615 Rebel opener Veerpartap Singh (47) guided his team's innings and was well supported by Kulith Rabel (25) as Cranbourne Meadows chased down the required runs in 26 overs. Cardinia claimed a home win against Clyde. Clyde's Warwick Weir (36 not out), Joel Avard (27) and Daniel Walton (26) kept the scoreboard ticking over, but Cardinia's bowling attack of Daniel Salvato (2/16), Josh Grogan (2/25) and Matt Thompson (2/40) all claimed key wickets as the Cougars posted a total of 6/134 off 35 overs. In reply, Cardinia's openers got off to a great start as Brad Remy (50) and Dwayne Doig (32) combined for an opening stand of 87. Despite the best efforts of Dean Williams (3/34), the Bulls chased down the total in 28 overs for the loss of seven wickets. Carlisle Park and NNG/Maryknoll was washed out, as was Tooradin and Emerald's encounter. SUB-DISTRICT Merinda Park defended a modest total against Kooweerup to claim the points at Donnelly Reserve.
At 3/6, the Cobras were in deep trouble, but solid contributions from Paul Wiles (32) and Amreek Mann (24 not out) ensured a disastrous total was avoided. Eventually, Merinda Park was dismissed for 121 in 28 overs as Jai Lewis (3/14), Arie Hazendonk (2/19) and Ron Bright Jr (2/21) bowled consistently for the Demons. The Cobras bowlers were simply superb as the Demons top-order faltered and found themselves at 4/20. Merinda Park's Agyapal Sidhu (4/12) and Amreek Mann (4/17) combined to rip through Kooweerup's batting line-up. Kooweerup was dismissed for 89 in 30 overs. Amreek Mann was the match-winner, contributing greatly with the bat and ball. Matches between Lang Lang and Gembrook, Pakenham Upper/Toomuc and Nyora, and Pakenham and Catani were all abandoned. On Saturday morning, just before the weekend's rain-affected round, the WGCA issued a statement on its website - in part saying: "Before any more people start complaining & blaming the Board for not calling this week's matches off due to wet weather, try reading the rules. All the current rules & by-laws are available on the website for everyone to see". The statement went on to read: "The Board can call rounds off, yes, but only after all the clubs have contacted the league & advised of their local conditions before 11am. If clubs fail to do this, then the Board cannot make the call. "The WGCA is one of the largest geographical associations around & weather conditions can be drastically different across the area the association covers, so without the cooperation of the clubs, such decisions are virtually impossible to make".
Local stars selected in AFLW Draft By Hayley Wildes In what was a remarkable day for football in the region, Tuesday's 2018 AFLW Draft saw two local stars taken with picks five and six, respectively. Dandenong Stingrays captain, Jordyn Allen is now a Magpie after Collingwood swooped on the talented midfielder with its first selection and fifth overall pick. One pick later, Gippsland Power captain and Cora Lynn product, Tyla Hanks was selected by Melbourne with the sixth overall pick. Both 18-year-olds were standouts in the TAC Cup Girls competition and at the national championships, where they played for Victoria Country. Hanks has been on the radar of AFLW clubs for some time and while her ability to play the game is tantalising, her leadership qualities and knowledge of the game is what sets her apart already at such a young age. Allen is also a terrific leader and possesses a great ability to burst away from contested situations and use her sublime skills to find a target when others would struggle. Both will slot straight into their respective teams and will be looking to have a big impact on the competition in 2019.
Where there’s a will, there’s a way By Russell Bennett

While the wintry weather returned to wreak havoc on cricket grounds right across the south-east on Saturday, the incredible curators at Shepley Oval in Dandenong worked tirelessly in a bid to allow 48 overs to be bowled - despite play being delayed until just after 3.30pm. The Panthers were hosting Melbourne Uni in their Round 4 Victorian Premier Cricket clash and were sent in under ominous skies after losing the toss. The star opening batting combination of skipper Tom Donnell (25) and Brett Forsyth (12) combined for just 22 in their first wicket stand before Forsyth became the first of Steve Reid’s three victims - caught behind by keeperbatsman Jarrod Martignago. Donnell fell soon after at 2/49, bowled by AJ Gregory, and continued the tone of Panthers batsmen departing just when they’d made a start. No less than five Dandenong batsmen reached double figures throughout the day’s play, but Donnell and Lincoln Edwards (33) were the only two to pass 20. In fact Donnell has departed in the 20s in three of his four hits so far this season - the other being a stellar unbeaten 90 in Round 3 against Northcote. Edwards looked in fine touch on Saturday
Dandenong Premier Cricket star Tom Donnell again made a start after play finally got underway Picture: ROB CAREW on Saturday. 186521 until he was bowled by Liam Scammell - the first of his two scalps as he finished with the impressive 2/8 from his five overs. It was Reid who was the biggest shining light in the Melbourne Uni attack as he finished with 3/27 from his 14 overs, while Wes Agar (1/29) was the other wicket-taker. Casey-South Melbourne's game against Melbourne at the Albert Ground was abandoned. It’s important to note that the Victorian Premier Cricket firsts, seconds and fourths will play a Rule 18 one-dayer next Saturday, while the
thirds will continue their Round 4 two-dayer. In other Dandenong Cricket Club news, young spinner Sophie Molineux was simply awe-inspiring for the Southern Stars as the left-armer claimed the impressive figures of 4/14 from nine overs in Australia’s one day international victory over Pakistan in Malaysia on Saturday. Batting first, Australia posted 7/273 thanks in no small part to skipper Meg Lanning’s 12th one-day ton and first since her return from shoulder surgery. Then it was Molineux’s turn to shine as Pakistan was dismissed for 123 - sealing an unassailable series win for the Aussies after game two of the three-game series. In the Dandenong District Cricket Association over the weekend, all junior games, and senior games - both synthetic and turf - were called off. Springvale South’s Round 2 showdown with Berwick at Alex Nelson Reserve, Mordialloc’s clash with North Dandenong at Ben Kavanagh Reserve, Hallam Kalora Park’s clash with St Mary’s at Hallam Recreation Reserve, and Heinz Southern Districts’ showdown with Buckley Ridges at KM Reedy Reserve will all take place this coming Saturday. Hallam Kalora Park, Springvale South, Buckley Ridges, and North Dandenong all recorded crucial first-up wins in the seasonopening round.

Cranbourne’s bounce back CRANBOURNE BOWLS Side 1 Division 2 After starting the season with two losses, Cranbourne is back on track with a win at home. All four skips steered their teams to victory by smashing Glen Waverley by 52 shots and picking up all 18 points. Skip Ron 'Two Dogs' Lyfield and his team won another close one to give them three wins out of three for the year so far. The team started slowly and had a few bad patches but Ron got them back in line to record another great win. Frank Byrne and his team of Neil Drummond, John McKenna and Graeme Wood were in hot form with a 20-shot win, while skip Barry 'The General' Thomas and his team of Peter Elgar, Gavin Wright and Garry Hunt were in sizzling form, winning by 27 shots. Thomas went on to say: "This is the biggest win I have been involved in for many years. Thanks to my team who all played some amazing bowls today". Recently promoted skip Sue Hudson had to get her team to dig deep to join the party. She was three shots down on the card with only one end to play so she gathered her team and asked them for one last effort for the day. Her team did not let Sue down and they managed to pick up an incredible four shots and won by one shot for the day to the loud cheers of the home crowd. Team manager Paul O'Day commented after the game that: "Picking up all 18 points for the club is simply amazing, this is the victory that was really needed to get our season going - a huge confidence builder". Cranbourne 116 (18 points) defeated Glen Waverley 64. Side 2 Division 3 Cranbourne went down in a thriller by only two shots to Narre Warren. Having every chance to continue their great work from last week, they just could not get over the line with two rinks doing well - particularly Skip Doug Boggie and his crew of Roger Roscoe, Lynne Wood and Frank Male, who won by 10 shots. Unfortunately they could not bridge the gap and went down by two shots in the end. Cranbourne 70 (4 points) lost to Narre Warren 72. Side 3 Division 5 Skips Cheryl Wright and Hans Worstelling and their teams both won by 16 shots each, which was enough to give the team a 31-shot victory and 16 points for the day. Cheryl is having a great year and was wellsupported by David Wilson, Harry Van Soest and Scott De Piazza while Hans was also well supported by Peter De Lisle, Sandra Mueller and A Cook.
Ron 'Two Dogs' Lyfield delivers a stirring motivational speech. Cranbourne 99 (16 points) defeated Berwick 68. Side 4 Division 7 Club Legend and life member Stan Burnett and his crew of Bruce Harper, Brian Legg and Norm Coley were the big winners, playing at Narre Warren winning by 19 shots and enabling the team to win overall by 47 shots and picking up 14 valuable points. Cranbourne 111 (18 points) defeated Narre Warren 64. Side 5 Six a side Skip Mick Feeley and his crew of Graeme Robinson and Dennis Tomlin had a relatively easy day, winning by 15 shots, which contributed to the 25-shot victory against a young Carrum side. Cranbourne 47 (14 points) defeated Carrum 22.
Midweek Bowls Cranbourne Ladies Division 1 Playing at Edithvale, skip Isobel Partington and her crew of Gwen Scott, Brenda De Lisle and Lois Brock were playing fantastic bowls and went on to win by 16 shots but they could not cover the other two rinks who were below par on the day and unfortunately lost overall by just two shots. After two wins and two losses the ladies are looking forward to turn things around this week and next week with two home games to be played in a row. Cranbourne Ladies 55 (2 points) lost to Edithvale 57. Other midweek bowls results this week were: Cranbourne 2 Division 2 Open 54 (two points) lost to Dandenong Club 55; Cranbourne 3 Division 3 Open 37 lost to Cranbourne RSL 98; and Cranbourne 4 six-a-side Open had a bye.
A strong week on the greens for Narre Tuesday was a particularly good day for Narre Warren with all three Midweek Pennant teams recording wins. Playing at Edithvale, Division 2 led all day for a comfortable 27-shot victory. The scoring was led by Eric Sydenham, Reg Young, Wally Finlayson and Wilma Stevenson, who won 29-11; while Alan Mark, Iain Stevenson, Rod Lane and Jim Millar won 26-16. Geoff Ampt, Wilma Haringsma, Colin Groom and Peter Hayden went down on the last end 17-18. Narre Warren (1) 14-72 defeated Edithvale (2) 2-45.
