MORE TO LOVE The editor’s desk It was a big week where the Federal Government said sorry to victims of child sexual abuse, the Queensland Government voted to legalise abortion and Prince Harry and Meghan dropped by to highlight the extraordinary natural beauty and value of our near neighbour Fraser Island. As we hurtle at break neck speed toward Christmas everyone's mind will turn to one thing - the traffic congestion around Hastings Street. Council has come up with a few ideas for tackling the issue based on the results of research conducted earlier in the year. I'm sure many locals will test them out while others will do their best to avoid the area for the duration. If you're looking for ways to avoid the traffic this week end why not catch a film or two - drop by the Noosa International Film Festival from 25-28 October. ●

ROYAL VISIT A BOOST FOR REGION The Duke and Duchess of Sussex waved to fans on a jetty on Fraser Island (K'Gari), north of Noosa, on Monday after Prince Harry dedicated a forest to the Queen's Commonwealth Canopy (QCC) and Meghan took a break from official duties. About 200 locals and guests greeted the relaxed-looking couple with gifts and well wishes. Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk joined the newly weds, describing the royal visit to the World Heritage-listed area as a boost to preserving the iconic region.

Prince Harry said the island needed to be saved for future generations. "At a time when there are so many natural world heritage sites under threat, it is more important than ever to protect this island," he said. Prince Harry toured the island meeting with local elders of the Butchulla People and National Park rangers to learn about the cultural significance of the world's largest sand island and its rich biodiversity. The couple planned to stay the evening on the island. ●

JOINT EFFORT TO OVERCOME COMMS BLACK SPOTS BY MARGARET MACCOLL Surf Life Saving Queensland (SLSQ) hope to hook into communication systems used by other emergency services, to overcome a communication black spot in Noosa National Park that is putting life saving operations at risk. On Friday a meeting was called between police, firefighters, ambulance, SES, National Park rangers and SLSQ on ways the organisations could work together to solve the issue. SLSQ spokesman Dave McLean said communication problems stretched from Tea Tree Bay in Noosa Heads National Park. "They're a real issue for us when we're trying to save lives," he said. He said while the national park beaches weren't patrolled by surf life savers

drownings had occurred in the area and when people got into trouble they went to their rescue. Queensland Fire and Emergency Services Noosa station officer Rob Frey said firefighters had access to the global wireless network operated by the State Government and used jointly by police and ambulance giving them effective communications throughout the national park, but external organisations were not on those bands. "It's all about a coordinated approach to bring together a communication network," he said. Noosa senior sergeant Ben Carroll said the meeting provided a great opportunity for the different agencies to talk and a joint exercise was being planned to occur in the national park to work out an effective means for all to communicate. ●

HIGH COST OF GOOD DEVELOPMENT BY MARGARET MACCOLL A development application at 215 David Low Way, Peregian Beach, that dragged on for 11 years has reached a settlement that has been hailed a win for all stakeholders but has come at a substantial cost of $850,000 to date to ratepayers. The settlement to Noosa Council's Planning and Environment Court Appeal was put forward during the final week of the trial by the developer the Scanlon Group proposing a 32-motel unit and 20-visitor unit development on the former caravan park site. "Importantly the design now meets the planning scheme's intention for this site, in that it supports the tourism industry and provides for a range of Noosa Shire visitor accommodation choices," Council's

Artists impression of the motel with views to Mt Cooroy. Development Assessment Manager Kerri Coyle said. "The new plans are also a better fit with the low density character of Peregian Beach, they provide for better landscaping, setbacks and general interface with surrounding properties."

Council refused the application in October 2017 and in December 2017 resolved to defend an appeal of that decision. Ms Coyle said Council met with the developer a number of times during the application assessment and in two mediations, facilitated by the Court registrar, where Council and its legal team clearly put its case to the developer. "Ultimately Council had a strong case and Council considered the developer did not have sufficient grounds to justify the proposal's conflict with the Noosa Plan." Scanlon Group managing director Tony Scanlon said their vision had "always been to provide the community with opportunities to prosper economically, whilst giving holiday makers a chance to appreciate the beautiful seaside village". ●

NBRF APPOINTS DIRECTORS Three new directors Rex Halverson, Deanna Lane and Greg Schumann were appointed to the Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation board after a public call to fill the positions, bringing the number of board positions to eight. Chair Dick Barnes said the new directors had experience in line with the board's needs of governance, fundraising and communication and would complement its expertise-based board. They will join existing directors Dick Barnes, Clare Cartwright, Dr David Dique, Dr Karen Hussey and Cr Frank Wilkie. THAT WE

MAY LIVE BY RON LANE

I

t is not that long ago that, believe it or not, in some cases laborers on the building sites of Hasting Street projects were earning more money than qualified Lifeguards. No responsibilities, no tough fitness tests against the clock, no advanced first aid training, and no radio or communication skills; and definitely no people skills required. But the biggest difference of all was that while working as a builders laborer, you would not be required to put your life on the line or make tough decisions that could mean the difference between life and death. "It's a bit sad you know but a lot of people have a pre-conceived idea about us," said veteran senior lifeguard Adam McKane. "They see us as young fit uneducated people who just sit around the beach watching the girls and telling people to get back between the flags." It was a Monday afternoon and as we sat and talked in the patrol tower on Main Beach other duty lifeguards went quietly

about their business. It was a rather sombre atmosphere for earlier in the day they had responded to a distress call from within National Park. This was to informing them that a body board surfer had been smashed against the rocks off Dolphin Point, possible serious head injuries had occurred and at that time an off duty lifeguard who had been surfing nearby was fighting to support the man in the surf and keep him away from the rocks. What was to follow is best described as S.O.P. (Standard Operational Procedure); quickly dispatch a rescue team, take the necessary gear, assess the situation and act accordingly. In this instant the injuries were to prove fatal. "I have been doing this for some twenty years," said Adam, "been involved in hundreds of rescue some like today were fatal and believe me it still shakes you up.'' Unfortunately we will soon be losing this well-educated, highly experienced and dedicated young man. Despite having earned degrees in Human Movement he will not turn his back on his life of a rescue specialist.

He will continue his calling, only this time he will be exchanging the sands of Noosa shire for the hard landing strips of our international airport at Rockhampton. His new designation will be that of Aviation Rescue and Fire Fighter. Thus he will continue his chosen path which is the protection of human life and being prepared, if necessary to go in harm's way. Born in Warrnambool Victoria Adam was educated at the Warrnambool High School and following this he enrolled at the Ballarat University and on completion of a two year course graduating with a Degree in Human Movement. It was in 1993 at high school his career in the life saving started when he joined the Warrnambool Surf Life Saving club. He started as a nipper, then at age 16 obtained his bronze medallion and this enabled him to obtain work as a lifeguard during the holiday breaks at Uni. "When I joined the surf club they had a very strong ski team; there were about 30 paddlers and many had won medals and

this set a benchmark for us young blokes. Apart from passing my bronze in 95, I also attended my first Australian Titles at Kurrawa and it was huge (surf). It was a real eye opener, it made me realise what lay ahead if I was going to make a career in life saving" From 1998 through to 2000 Adam held the position of Chief Instructor. "In those days," said Adam, "three or four of us all under 20 held the key positions; our club captain was only 19 and all the older guys stayed in the background as advisors. It was great; club life was a bit rugged, we were always struggling for a dollar and there were times when we had trouble paying our power bills. I also remember the time when during one school holiday we worked together to build a patrol tower; and if you went away to compete you paid your own way. But today lifesaving is totally different. Now we have supporter clubs and the whole thing is run as a business and rightly so."

During that era the role of Chief Instructor was all important. He had to organize basic bronze training, oversea competition, and be aware of the fitness level of the club member. "Then in the late 90s bronze training was introduced into the school system and teachers would encourage students to join the clubs and we would also go into the school rooms and assist with the teaching: the students would also be required to do 20 hours of patrolling." At this stage he had started ski coaching and as a result was sent to a seminar on the Gold Coast where he met a clubbie from Noosa Heads named Glen Gannon. Gannon sold him not only on the Noosa club but also the Noosa lifestyle. Then in 2000, he made the move; joined the club, assisted in Nipper and ski training as well as competing "For my first month in town I stayed in the bunk house, this was good as it gave me time to get to know people plus look for permanent accommodation." "It was totally different ball game: lots more competition, and a higher standard. You would get to a surf carnival and there would be Olympians like Grant Kenny and Clint Robinson on the line." But also on arrival he met up with a lifeguard who was to make a lasting impression. His name was Mark Jacobs. Affectionately known as Chicken Legs, Mark discussed the possibility of work. "I did a time swim and other tests and started as a lifeguard at Sunshine Beach. "Then" said Adam with a smile, "because I was so quiet he nicknamed me Rowdy. It stuck and

to this day I still get old hands calling me Rowdy." Once settled he also decided to further his education, enrolled at the Queensland University for a post graduate course and after three years, received his Diploma in Human Movement. Regarding experiences there was one that really shook him. "About fifteen years ago on North Shore Beach, a young couple in their early 20s got caught in a really dangerous hole. By the time we arrived it was virtually too late. We got the girl out ok but her friend was unconscious and while we were applying CPR she became hysterical. They were swimming together, got into difficulties she tried to help the guy but he was drowning her; she had to break away and leave him. We had to calm her and explain that she had no choice, if she had stayed both would have drowned; it was a really sad situation. The helicopter and paramedics arrived - it was too late; he was gone, the young woman was standing on the beach crying and blaming herself. That was an afternoon that none of us will ever forget." Considering that his life on the beach started soon as he could walk his decision to change his way of life was not easy. ''The main reason for the change was that I saw it as a complete new challenge -something new with different techniques and skills.'' So to Rowdy we say thanks for the years and Via Con Dios. ●

Police retrieve the bike from under the van.

CYCLIST IS STRUCK A 75-year-old Noosaville cyclist suffered gashes to his face and legs and complained of a sore neck after he was hit by a van at the roundabout at the corner Lake Weyba Road and Lake Weyba Drive about 9.30am last Friday. A woman who heard the impact was first on the scene and spoke to the cyclist named Barry. "I just heard this almighty noise. It was like a truck hitting a brick wall," she said. She said Barry told her he had just finished a training ride and decided to go a little further when the accident occurred. Police, firefighters and ambulance officers attended the scene and the cyclist was taken to Nambour Hospital for observation.

Cyclist is taken to hospital. The driver of the van who was visibly shaken said it was terrible thing to happen. The man who had been on his way to pick up coffee said he felt for the cyclist and hoped he wasn't badly injured. ●

NEWS FOAM AGAIN

Police want to speak to these girls in relation to vandalism.

Smashed windows in Noosa Junction.

GIRLS WANTED BY POLICE Smashing windows, destroying pot plants, tossing paint over buildings and floors and smearing faeces on toilet walls are amongst the acts of wilful damage that have cost traders in Noosa Junction thousands of dollars and have police calling for help to track down the culprits. Police on Friday released images of two young girls aged about 10 to 15 years who they believe are responsible for at least some of the vandalism.Noosa Heads senior sergeant Ben Carroll said police suspect the girls may be sleeping rough or on holiday as they haven't been locally identified.

"We're not sure what their circumstances are," he said. CCTV footage was captured of the girls in the area in the early hours of 1 October on the same night considerable damage was caused to plants and pots in Arcadia Way. In the evening of 25 September a cleaner caught two young girls vandalising public toilets in Lanyana Way, on the same night windows were smashed and paint strewn around. Snr sgt Carroll said the situation was very frustrating for police and traders who wanted to maintain an attractive, welcoming

environment for visitors. "They're decreasing the amenity of the area," he said.Noosa Junction Association representative Joel Laventure said businesses were working together to make the precinct as safe and clean as it could be. He said businesses were working with the police, gathering as much evidence as they could and keeping each other informed. "We're treating it as a community response," he said. Police are urging anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or Noosa Police on 5440 8111. ●

Next time you buy carpet underlay it may have once come from the mattress on which you slept. Resource Recovery Australia (RRA) which won the contract for Noosa Council's Resource Recovery Centre has salvaged 3.5 tonnes of foam from about 1000 mattresses processed since July and sold 90 per cent of it to Dunlop where is is sanitised and turned into new carpet underlay, RRA manager Matt Curtis said. In partnership with the University of NSW, RRA is developing ways to recycle the remaining 10 per cent of the material component of the mattress by turning it into acoustic panelling. The metal is melted down to be made into new products. The wood component is turned into woodchip. Noosa Council's waste and environmental health manager said RRA was also providing employment opportunities for those facing barriers to gaining employment. "In the past three months, three staff have gained forklift licences, five acquired test and tag licences, six completed fire warden training and two received first aid training," he said. ●

With domestic violence issues taking up to a third of police time and resources in Noosa Shire a group has formed urging others to take to the streets on Friday 23 November from 10am at Noosaville Lions Park to say NO to domestic violence against women as part of the White Ribbon Campaign. Founded in 1991 in Canada by a group of men after the senseless slaughter of female students at Ecole Polythechnique in Montreal the campaign is aimed at both raising awareness of domestic violence against women by men and looking into ways of breaking the cycle of domestic violence within communities. The campaign is active in more than 60 countries and held internationally on 25 November. Noosa White Ribbon committee spokesman Bob Birkhead got involved in the campaign in Sydney where he initiated a march that now hosts 10,000 walkers annually. A meeting coordinated by Bob brought together police, Noosa Council, Zonta, United Synergies, Free to Shine charity and a decision was made to hold a walk in Noosa. "Whilst domestic violence is not gender specific the level of reportable incidents is heavily based around violence in all its forms against women," Bob said Police Superintendent and Sunshine Coast White Ribbon ambassador Darryl Johnson said communities needed to change attitudes to domestic violence by owning, embracing and driving change.

Bob Birkhead, Margie Fisher of Zonta, Kylie Anderson of Free to Shine and Noosa Council's Alison Hamblin. "Domestic violence is a generational issue and one of the key aims of the walk will be to engage with young people from local schools and sporting groups as a means of providing peer group support to their friends who may be one of the one in four young people impacted by domestic violence," he said. "Police evidence shows that young people who are exposed to domestic violence are more likely to become perpetrators in the future." FUN TRAIL IN PINK BY MARGARET MACCOLL Clutching their passports and draped in pink about 200 residents and friends trekked a 2km path around Cooroy on Saturday to record pink items and one blue one stacked in store windows along the way as they took part in the annual Pink Precinct Fun Trail. The fun event and fundraiser for the National Breast Cancer Foundation was begun in 2010 by the Cooroy Library at the request of one woman who had breast cancer. Cooroy Chamber of Commerce member Carol Christensen has now taken charge and it continues to grow, this year attracting even more participants with a move from Thursday to Saturday. Carol said Cooroy was such a generous town individuals and businesses were only too willing to donate and join in. ●

NOOSA FERRY CLOCKING UP THE K'S BY HOLLIE HARRIS

"We subsequently sought permission to use the name from Maisie whose dad had the original Riverlight built in 1917. Maisie and the Massoud family have been great supporters of the whole idea and it was Maisie who launched the new "Riverlight" for us on behalf of the family on November 28, 1998 - 81 years after the original. There is such a strong sense of history, of boats and families on the Noosa waterway with the Massouds', Parkyns', Taits' and many others providing this wonderful link in the Noosa community and we thank them for including us," says Paul. The vessels are shallow draft and have a very small environmental footprint with

low wake characteristics. They use a single diesel, with free to air exhaust and feature keel cooling, which means that no liquids are exchanged into the waterway. Fun fact - The kilometres traveled over the past 20 years The Noosa Ferry would have circumnavigated the world nine times cruised more than 4,000 sunsets and carried more than a million passengers onboard the three classic riverboats. "From day one we have had great support from the established businesses, the accommodation houses and the locals who have helped us in the hard times and we can't thank them enough.

The ferries operate from Tewantin, include stops along Noosaville at the Yacht and Rowing club, Pelican Boat Hire, O Boat Hire, T Boat Hire, then on to the Noosa Sound restaurants at Q Place and then to Noosa Heads Sofitel Hotel Jetty. An "All Day Pass" has unlimited use throughout the day. No need to book just turn up, purchase a ticket from the place of departure or on the boat and away you go. The Noosa Ferry would like to thank the community for their support over the past 20 years as they "toot toot" their way into the future. Check out www.noosaferry.com or phone 5449 8442 for further information. â—?

12402902-RC44-18

"Discover Noosa the easy way" is their catchcry and The Noosa Ferry celebrates 20 years of serving the Noosa Community. Running three Noosa Ferry Craft, which are all named after early ferries that used to operate on the Noosa River - Riverlight, Miss Laguna and Miss Tewantin, the Ferry still follows the old riverboat route, stopping at jetties along the way, allowing passengers to hop on and off. But it's more than just a means of transport. With skippers providing a light-hearted commentary about the ever-changing Noosa landscape as they cruise leisurely up and down the river, this is an experience. In the 1920's many visitors came to Noosa Heads by the river, the most popular path to the Gympie goldfields, which is how Gympie Terrace, a world-class facility with landscaped walks, picnic areas and lots of great places to eat and being on the water gives you a whole new perspective of this area. Their first vessel "Riverlight" came into service in December 1998 to coincide with the relaunch of Noosa Harbour Marine Village (now known as Noosa Marina and originally Harbour Town) at Tewantin. It was their first design and build project by owner operator and boat builder Don McBryde. "For us it was the opportunity to build and place a vessel on the waterway that reflected the style and grace of the Noosa River. We had owned, refurbished alnd operated small commercial passenger vessels before, and had often looked to Noosa for just such an opportunity," says manager Paul Grossman.

ON TRACK TO DEFICIT The recent commonwealth Finance Department report shows that it is fundamentally dishonest for the LNP government to be claiming to have reduced the deficit. The 2018 Budget is on track to yield another deep deficit, despite record revenues flowing into Federal coffers. Total revenue for July and August was a thumping $76.3 billion. That is $5.7 billion higher than for the same period last year and up $15.2 billion on 2015. Yet still, the government can't produce a surplus. Net debt at the end of August was $352.5 billion. That is $20 billion deeper than a year ago. It is $96.3 billion more than when current PM Scott Morrison became Treasurer. And it's $191.3 billion - or 119 per cent - more than the level at the 2013 election. This debt has largely been incurred by selling government bonds. Australia has gone from being close to the best-performed economy in the OECD in 2013, to almost the worst now. Only Mexico's gross debt has deepened further than Australia's over the last five years relative to gross domestic product. The net debt data now shows similar dismal global comparisons. Only extreme incompetence should yield such results. Joy Ringrose Pomona

PEREGIAN BEACH IS NOT PART OF GREATER PEREGIAN Despite statements by the newly merged Peregian Family & Friends Association, that it will seek to lobby for a "greater Peregian", there is no way Peregian Beach locals will allow their village community to be classified as part of a "growth corridor". Peregian Beach residents have fought hard over many years, particularly through the efforts of the Peregian Beach Community Association, to protect and enhance the character and identity of their beachside community. It successfully lobbied to have what was then south Peregian included in the Noosa Shire. Since then it has had many successes in protecting and enhancing both the built and natural environment of this unique village community. In the last few days there has been a landmark victory for the Peregian Beach community and Noosa Council. The court settlement over contentious plans for the old caravan park site in the heart of the village ensures that development must be in keeping with the Noosa Plan. No name change will conceal the fact that the Peregian Springs Residents Association seeks to include Peregian Beach as part of its growth corridor plans. Peregian Springs may well be one of the fast-

est growing areas on the Sunshine Coast. All the more reason for Peregian Beach to maintain its unique selling proposition and to resist the "growth at any price" mantra of other areas. Peregian Beach residents, and those of us in Marcus Beach who see ourselves as an extension of the village community, do not want unplanned and uncontrolled growth and development in our beachside communities. That is why we are happy to be in the Noosa Shire. Peregian Beach and Marcus Beach are not part of a growth corridor and nor do we aspire to be part of a "greater Peregian" - that message needs to be conveyed loud and clear. John Hare Marcus Beach

CHANCE FOR REFUGEES

Dr Kerryn Phelps election into Parliament is the only real chance refugees and especially their children have in getting off Nauru and Manus detention centres. The Sunday Mail, Oct 21, P55 had a photo of a young child holding her doll for comfort sitting behind a wire fence in a detention centre on Nauru. With the head line. ALMOST A SMILE AMONG THE RUBBLE. What made this photo more compelling to me was it appeared she was sitting on a reduntant wall safe. Is this the nearest this young child and the others there will ever get to any form of safety. E. LIVE

NIFF BRINGS SHORT FILMS FROM AROUND THE WORLD TO NOOSA BY HOLLIE HARRIS This weekend's Noosa International Film Festival (NIFF) has plenty of short film screenings to choose from and with tickets selling fast, let's have a look at some of the highlights to choose from. Unfortunately, The Laugh Out Loud session, featuring twelve short comedies being screened at Land and Sea Brewery has already sold out, but there are still more than 60 other screenings to kick off your weekend-long short film binge. The first session at The J is at 10am on Saturday 27th and is dedicated to filmgoers who love to be thrilled and chilled. Wake In Fright is the theme featuring eight short films that will have you sitting on the edge

of your seat as you contemplate the impact of disturbed relationships, the recall of awful memories, demonic characters and hired killers, plus creepy house invasions to name just a few. Session 2 at 12pm is dedicated to Women & Film. Every one of the eight featured shorts are made by women or about women - designed to inspire, captivate, chuckle and intrigue through stories of friendship and love, both lost and found. From a humorous look at society's current obsession with mobile phones through to thought provoking drama involving a teen's dilemma of friendship vs conscience, these films will have you laughing one minute and quietly contemplative the next.

To add to the festival fun, in between the film sessions at The J, you can sit back and enjoy courtyard music and entertainment, food and coffee. Stories We Tell Parts 1 and 2 make up two short film screenings, the first at The J at 2pm on Saturday and the second on Sunday at Eumundi School of Arts Hall at 12pm. These sessions will delight those with a sense of fun, with subjects as diverse as action hero transformations, love and revenge, living with a guilty conscience and real life inspirations. In just one film, clever use of animation addresses our current obsession with technology and where social approval is mankind's latest drug. One of the films screening at Eumundi is that by local filmmaker, Gail Hewton with

her film, In a Different Space, celebrating elders, 60 to 101 years of age, dancing their stories in places of significance to them. Rounding out Saturday's screenings at The J at 4pm is Based on a True Story - a collection of shorts celebrating interesting locals, inventors, prime ministers, and artists. A number of colourful, enterprising characters share their lives with us. Saturday's program finishes with the NIFF 2018 Short Film Awards. This special event celebrates the filmmakers and is the best place to watch all 10 of the winning films of this year's festival. The Noosa International Film Festival runs from 25-28 October across Noosa and Eumundi. For events and tickets visit www. niff.com.au. â—?

WHAT’S ON FREE EVENING OF BANDS

ONE HELLUVA VOICE Saturday 3 November sees the phenomenal MOJO JUJU take to the stage at The Imperial Hotel Eumundi as part of her Native Tongue Album Tour. NATIVE TONGUE is a fitting title for the third studio album from Mojo Juju and it is her very essence laid bare. It is raw, honest, emotional and intrinsically political. It is also brutal and relentlessly real. Since cutting her teeth and making a name for herself on the Australian touring circuit in the late 2000s, Mojo Ruiz de Luzuriaga, a.k.a Mojo Juju, has been many things to many people. She's been a troubadour, a soothsayer, a shapeshifter and a darn good songwriter. Now, after a decade honing the art of story-telling, she's made the boldest move imaginable; she has decided to finally just be the story. 'Native Tongue' is exactly that. Through the telling of family history and her own personal experiences, Juju explores her relationships with elders and ancestry and how that informs her own identity. Contemplating her mother's Indigenous heritage, her father's experience as a Filipino immigrant and her own place in the cultural landscape of modern Australia, it is an album about self-discovery and it is her most sincere, heartfelt and personal offering to date. "One of the most crucial elements in order to know who you are is to know where you've come from, to know your roots. We've all heard it before but it really started to resonate with me. I started to think about

Mojo Juju comes to Eumundi with "Native Tongue" for an unmissable performance. the importance of oral traditions, how songs are such a huge part of that. I wanted to document these stories from my family, as well as my own experiences with identity and culture. So, delving into my family history is only the beginning of the story, but I think it's a very good place to start." Stylistically, Juju once again embarks on new territory through collaborations with multiple producers - Steven Schram (Paul Kelly), Joel Ma (a.k.a. Joelistics), jnbo (The Cactus Channel) and Jamieson Shaw (Netflix series 'The Get Down'), and includes a number of features from an eclectic array of guests; Hip Hop MC Mirrah (L-Fresh The Lion), Soul music royalty Joshua Tavares and spoken word artist Lay the Mystic.

The album opens with the latest single and title track to her new album, 'Native Tongue', and it cuts directly to the bone. Lead by an absolutely mesmerising beat (courtesy of Joelistics) and the haunting vocal work of the Pasefika Vitoria Choir, Juju treats these opening moments like a live exorcism; she takes a hand over either side of her chest and turns herself completely inside out, laying her innermost workings bare for all to see. She pulls no punches and offers no quarter, tearing at the foundations of the institutionalised prejudices she has had to face as a mixed race, queer woman, growing up in a country with no place for her, never feeling enough a part of any one community to be accepted. It is a song that manages to be so personal and painful, yet simultaneously empowering and anthemic, as though it were written for every mixed race or Indigenous person who has ever felt like they did not belong. This time around Juju has taken her eclectic influences and created a seamless and authentically original sound, continuing her dedication to bucking labels, bending genres and doing her own thing. Perhaps the manifold musical incarnations of Juju are symbolic of the manifold pieces that make up her identity. Perhaps this unique blend of Soul, RnB, Blues and Hip Hop is in fact her 'Native Tongue'. TICKETS: $25 available from the Imperial Hotel (5442 8811) or via Oztix. $30 at the door ●

Free entertainment for everyone - the wonderful Noosa community event 'Sound Feast' is on Friday 26 October at The J, 60 Noosa Drive, Noosa Junction. This will be the last Sound Feast of a very successful 2018. The line-up for Friday includes six-piece sensation 'Highlife' featuring South-African born, Hayden Hack and some of the very finest players around, laying down African grooves and an irresistible vibe of pure celebration. 'Jay Power' hails from New Zealand, currently touring Australia. Jay Power blends urban beats, funk and neo soul with soaring female vocals and guitar accompaniment. Brothers Aaron and Levi from the Northern Territory form 'VanderAa'. Their sound blends a mix of drum, djembe, beat boxing, didgeridoo, guitar and vocals. World-class harmonica player, Christian Marsh (N.S.W.) delivered a knock-out performance at Sound Feast over a year ago. He will be accompanied by the 'Swiss army knife' of the music industry, Paul Robert Burton (who plays everything at the same time, arms and legs-a-flailing). Opening the evening is local entertainer, Jaz McKenzie, starting early at 6pm. Jaz is gifted with a natural warmth that emanates and fills the room. A perfect start to a rather big night. The Jester Sisters, will also be at The J, offering colourful fun, from a greater height than most (on stilts!) Doors open from 6pm. ●

SIP AND SHARE JAPAN-STYLE BY HOLLIE HARRIS An Izakaya is a Japanese-style pub. This means you have alcohol as well as food, but instead of everyone receiving their own main dish, the standard procedure is for everyone to order lots of small, typically inexpensive dishes that are shared by everyone around the table, ordering subsequent rounds along with accompanying drinks. Welcome to Izakaya Ate on Arcadia Street. Noosa's newest place for tasty Japanese snacks and meals washed down with an impressive selection of sakes and Japanese beers. A place where you can dare try the famous sake bomb or indulge in a traditional Japanese whisky with your dishes. Growing up in Japan with a mother who was passionate about cooking and sharing secret family recipes with her daughter, owner Yuri Maekawa was destined to work with food. Running a catering business in Japan, Yuri knew she wanted to share her love of food with Noosa and jumped when the opportunity came knocking. Only open for one month, Izakaya Ate is already showing signs that they are here to stay. With many repeat visits from locals, the new restaurant must have something pretty special, so I headed in to see what all the fuss was about. Yuri loves traditional curries and her home-made recipes have found their way onto the extensive menu, which has been broken up into three sizes. Ate means small;

think snacks to go with your drinks, such as Edmame three ways or pork and edamame nachos. Ippin, means tapas style; such as teriyaki chicken wings or gyoza - perfect for sharing with friends and Shime are the larger meal style options like Yuri's mothers Japanese Curries and noodle dishes. I'm always looking for the dumpling perfection, so it was a no-brainer to try the coconut soup with pork dumplings. There is something so personal about the way dumpling wrappers cut, rolled, filled and folded, all by hand. I also ordered the soba noodle salad to cleanse. I over-ordered! The servings are hearty and filling. I was excited to bite into my first dumpling to find it was tender and juicy inside, with delicate flavours of ginger and pork wrapped in a perfectly silky casing. The dumplings are spot on. Gently resting in a clay pot of warm, coconut soup, this meal feels like home. The pork soba noodle salad was fun and fresh. A pile of soba noodles, pickled ginger, pork pieces mixed up with fresh salad made a great light lunch with a punch of zingy flavour. There are tasty little crunchy pops throughout the dish from fried onions and Spicy coconut soup with perfectly tender and silky dumplings and zingy soba noodles.

pork crackle as well as one of my favourites - crunchy egg noodles. Wonderful textures, colours and flavours in this one. While many of the dishes on the menu seem familiar, you will also find a few exciting additions to taste, such as the octopus karaage (if you're a chicken karaage fan, you need to try this one!) or sashimi carpaccio with their special house-made sauce and of course an intriguing selection of Japanese deserts starting from only $6! Grab a lunch special starting from $15 for a meal and $5 beer any day of the week except Wednesdays, when Izakaya Ate is closed. Dine outside or in around the beautiful bar lined with sake bottles and small bonsai, which make it warm and full of Japanese soul. Traditional and quirky paintings hang on the walls painted in duck egg blue bringing together a homey little space to settle in for a night of sipping excellent sake and sharing a selection of Ates. They are fully licensed and open for cheap eats and drinks from 3-5pm and then dinner from 5-10pm. 3/14 Arcadia Street Noosa Junction. Phone on 5448 0724 to book a table. â—?

COOK

TWISTED DAGWOOD DOGS Carnival food just went gourmet! Not just for kids - sausages wrapped in prosciutto and cheese-crusted pastry then baked in the oven. INGREDIENTS 2 sheets shortcrust pastry, partially thawed 1 egg, lightly whisked 30g (1/2 cup) finely grated cheddar 1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh rosemary 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika 6 gourmet sausages 6 thin slices prosciutto, cut in half horizontally 1 1/2 tablespoons maple syrup Tomato relish, to serve METHOD Step 1 Preheat oven to 200C/180C fan forced. Line 2 large baking trays with baking paper. Step 2 Place pastry sheets on a clean work surface. Brush with a little egg and sprinkle with the cheese, rosemary and paprika. Use a rolling pin to gently roll over the cheddar mixture to lightly press into pastry. Cut the pastry into 2.5cm thick strips. Transfer to prepared trays and place in the fridge for 15 minutes to chill. Step 3 Thread a thick bamboo or metal skewer through each sausage. Starting at the top of a sausage carefully coil 2 strips of the prosciutto around the sausage. Carefully coil 2-3 pastry strips around each sausage, pressing each strip together to seal. Place on prepared trays, seam side down, allowing a 4cm gap between each sausage. Bake for 40-45 minutes. Brush with maple syrup. Bake for a further 5-10 minutes or until golden and crisp. â—?

LIFE OF BRINE

PHIL JARRATT

THE GREATEST GARBO SINCE GRETA BY PHIL JARRATT Fairly predictably, I met Ian Keirnan, who died last week, over a few drinks. Make that a few dozen drinks. The occasion was the launch of radio station 2MMM's Spirit of Sydney campaign at Sydney's Cruising Yacht Club in 1986. We had a few mutual friends, among them the media tycoon Rod Muir, a yachtie tragic who was bankrolling the Ben Lexcendesigned Spirit's entry in the BOC Solo Round The World Challenge, with Keirnan at the helm. I began documenting the preparation for the race in the pages of The Bulletin magazine, and by the time the starter's gun went off in Newport, Rhode Island, we were good mates. In August 1987, a couple of months after Keirnan finished the BOC in sixth position, I had a phone call from the young PR wizard Kim McKay, who had masterminded the Spirit of Sydney media campaign. "Bicky's (Keirnan's nickname amongst close friends) trying to write a book and he needs help," she said. "He's no Hemingway." All he really had was a title - "Twice Around the Shark Pool", a reference to the solo race and his experiences as a builder/ developer during Sydney's property boom in the early '70s - so we used the project as a good excuse to meet regularly at the Mossman Rowers Club to shoot the breeze. We made some progress, but the book hit a stumbling block in the form of a mounting passion that would come to dominate the rest of Keirnan's life. Sailing alone on the Spirit in the Atlantic Ocean, Keirnan encountered for the second time in his life as a sailor, the mythical and magical Sargosso Sea, but this time he found it filled with rubbish. He had a nightmarish vision of all the world's oceans clogged with man-made waste, and resolved to do something about it. His mind went back to 1975, when he and some yachtie mates decided to clean up the filthy Ala Wai Canal in Honolulu and were inundated with helping hands. Back in Sydney, Keirnan and Kim McKay started working on a little project they called "Clean Up Sydney Harbour". Six years later, after the project had morphed into Clean Up Australia, then Clean Up The World, after Keirnan had been named Australian of the Year, been dubbed "the greatest garbo since Greta" by Phillip Adams, and helped save Prince Charles from an assassination attempt, we picked up the pieces of the book

again and publishers came running. But our chosen publisher didn't like the shark pool title. They also didn't like the title our Noosa friends, Helen and Tony Flanagan came up with after a gloriously long lunch - "What a Load of Rubbish" - so we went with "Coming Clean", with its nod to Bicky's preparedness to come clean about his early days as a crash or burn developer and his bawdy episodes as a tomcat sailor. In the interests of political correctness, however, several hundred one-night stands in exotic ports were distilled into one gorgeous creature we called "Leilani". On New Year's Eve, 1994, I flew down to Hobart to sail back to Sydney with Bicky following another bold showing in the Sydney to Hobart in his beloved Maris. Being fairly useless as a sailor, I was assigned galley duties, which consisted of scrambling eggs at a 45-degree list and making sure the "dog beer" was cold. For almost a week, Keirnan and I sat at the wheel drinking beer and talking into a tape recorder until the book was finished. Launching Coming Clean at Balmoral Beach in 1995, Prime Minister Paul Keating departed from his prepared speech to tell a wonderful story about jumping off the Manly Ferry as a kid and swimming to shore. In that moment, he actually became the man we were all there to celebrate - a great Australian, a true visionary, but above all else, just a loveably naughty boy. Vale Ian "Bicky" Keirnan, 1940-2018.

THE SPOILER OF PENICHE Few but the keenest of World Surf League followers would have heard much about France's Joan Duru until last week in Peniche, Portugal, when he eliminated world title contenders Filipe Toledo and Julian Wilson before going down to Brazil's Italo Ferreira in the final. The title race now goes to Pipeline, with Wilson hot on the heels of world number one Gabriel Medina. But it is the race to the bottom that concerns Duru, still fighting for a position on the tour next year, but in with a real shot after rocketing up the rankings to number 23, just outside the cut. I have to admit to conflicting loyalties as I watched the Frenchman take out our local hero, because I've also known Joan since he was a grommet just beginning to make a name for himself at the Hossegor beach breaks. Joan was a shy kid of 13, about a foot taller than his chirpy Quiksilver team-mate, Jeremy Flores, who was the leader of the

Joan Duru on fire in Peniche last week. Photo WSL. pack. As Quiksilver Europe marketing boss at the time, I was working on a pilot TV program for Eurosport called "Surf Stars", in which our crew followed the antics of the junior team as they competed on the pro junior circuit around Europe. I loved the spirit of those kids, their pranks and practical jokes in those pre-smartphone days, their raw emotions as they won or lost. When they grew up Jeremy became the star and Joan toiled in the qualifying series for a decade until finally getting his chance. He deserves another one in 2019. Allez, Joan!

DRAGONS MEET REPTILES FOR THE DAY In their off season time last Saturdayabout 40 of our Eumundi Dragons ( adults as well as kids ) enjoyed a Reptile Event, courtesy of the Yaxley family who won a a voucher for the show in a recent club raffle . Club president Doug Toms said the reptiles including pythons, lizard and tortoises, in the show were non venomous and very docile so all who attended had a great afternoon getting up close and personal with all of the animals, and a free sausage sizzle courtesy of the club. "It was an enjoyable afternoon for all who attended. The hope is that in the future we may be treated to the inclusion of a water dragon - emblem of our club. The people running the show did however point out that these creatures are hard to maintain in an enclosed environment," he said. â—?

TNT DEVASTATE CALOUNDRA WITH A WITHERING BLAST RANDALL WOODLEY For the first time this season the four TNT senior cricket teams were able to complete a day's cricket on dry wickets and fields. Three of the teams are well placed to register wins when the matches resume next Saturday. FIRST GRADE. Last Saturday, in one of the topsy-turviest games of cricket ever played at Read Park, saw the local team, Tewantin-Noosa Thunder ahead by 193 runs and 7 wickets in hand at stumps on Day 1. Playing Caloundra, the home team were sent into bat on what looked like a well-prepared pitch. Whether it was the pitch, good bowling or maybe a couple of doubtful decisions is anyone's guess but TNT wickets began falling regularly- 1 for 4 after 6 overs, 2 for 9 after 8 and eventually 9 for 63 in the 32nd over. The only batsman to put up a stand was ex-Scorchers player Joash Mathys, who scored 22. Then Lachie Gunner (18) and debutant Tom Stewart (5 no) put on 20 for the last wicket. It had been a disappointing morning for TNT scoring only 83 runs but no one could envisage what would happen in the next hour and a half. New team member, Scott Aufderheide from South Australia and teenager, Tom Stewart set about dismantling the Caloundra line up. Between them they bowled 15 overs and took 10 wickets for 26 runs. It must be one of the lowest First Grade scores ever registered in the S.C.C.A. competition. This was probably one of the most devasting bowling spells seen at Read Park for some years and no Caloundra batsman had any answers to their superb swing and pace bowling. Five of their batsmen registered "ducks". Scott finished with 7 for 9 off 8 overs and snared five wickets in his last eleven balls. In his initial First Grade match Tom took 3-14 off 7. When TNT batted again, the Caloundra bowlers had wilted and by the end of day's play, TNT were 136 off 34 overs for the loss of only 3 wickets. Andrew Kratzmann scored 42, Chris Wright 28 with not out batsmen, Jarrod Officer (25) and Joash Mathys (22) still there at stumps. Next Saturday the plan is to pile on some quick runs and then attack the Caloundra 34 NOOSA TODAY

SECOND GRADE were at Caloundra to play them in Round 2 and were greeted by a surprisingly dry field and flat dry pitch. TNT won the toss, decided to bat first but found the going pretty tough against tight bowling. Unfortunately, it was a similar situation to the last match with none of the TNT batsmen able to post any significant scores. Best scores were from Zac

Goodchild 24, Robbie Payton and Keegan Bean both 19. TNT finished to be all out on 144, at least 50 runs short of what they had targeted. Caloundra came out with a license to hit and piled on the runs and at stumps they were 1-108. 3 dropped catches made it harder for the Tewantin boys to gain the ascendancy and next week there is a big challenge for the team to save the match. THIRD GRADE played Palmwoods at Dale Officer Oval, Tewantin on Day 1 of

their fixture match. The TNT team scored 172 in their first innings and at stumps Palmwoods were 1 for 20. This puts the home team in a sound position for a first innings win next Saturday. FOURTH GRADE travelled to Nambour where the home side won the toss and elected to bat first. TNT were on top early, having Nambour 3 for 36 at drinks and then 4 for 70 at the next break, despite some missed chances. It turned out to be a slow and long afternoon with Nambour still at the crease at stumps on 7 for 104 after 83 overs. Wicket takers were Luke Anstey 2-13 off 15, Graham Chaplin 3-17 off 19 and Naveen Chand 1-4 off 8. Brendan Chaplain, returning to cricket after a few years off took 1-18 and the catch of the day with a low hard hit caught inches of the ground. Next Saturday the TNT boys will need to pick up the final 3 Nambour wickets and then set about scoring the necessary runs to register a first-innings win. WOMEN'S CRICKET The first of the Woman's Cricket fixtures will be played next Sunday, October 28. The TewantinNoosa Lightning team will host USCBuderim at Read Park at 9.30am and the Tewantin-Noosa Thunder women will travel to Wamuran to play their team. Locals are encouraged to come to Read Park to watch the first official cricket match for women being played there. â—? noosatoday.com.au

YOUNG GUNS IN TOURNAMENT BY RON LANE It is that time of the year again when the Young Guns of the Australian Amateur Boxing Fraternity will congregate in Cooroy for their annual tournament. This event which has now been held in the main hall of the Noosa District State High School Tulip St. Cooroy and hosted by the Impact Boxing Academy for several years, will see fighters from clubs all over Australia weighing in. This year we will have the added attraction of boxers from New Zealand on the program. All indications are that with the concept of an Australia Vs New Zealand Anzac Super Series now gathering momentum, visits of boxers from Kiwi Land could possible become a common occurrence. With the dedication and hard work of Impact Academy owner/coach Mark Evans and his support group, a visit of international athletes could become a common occurrence; so this Saturday 27 October starting at 3.30pm could be a step in the right direction. Another major factor of this tournament is that like the recent Queensland School Karate Championships held at the Good Shepard Lutheran College Noosaville, it is definitely a family affair; and to see the families that will support the Impact

Cohen and Paige Robinson. Academy on Saturday night is indeed a vote of confidence. Family support of our local sporting bodies cannot be

emphasized enough. On Monday Mark returned from an international tournament in Auckland

New Zealand in which a team of seven Australian fighters stepped up against a National representative team. Of the seven members of our Aussie team four were from our local Impact Academy; Paige Robinson, Cohen Robinson, Keana Welsh and Spencer Pardon. Of our four members Paige Robinson, age 11, won her bought as did as did Cohen Robinson aged 13. For Cohen this was a good result as in the previous tournament against the same opponent, a national champion, he dropped a close decision but this time saw Cohen take control in round one which resulted in him reversing the decision to get a well-earned points victory. For Keana Welsh and Spencer Pardon both were unlucky to finish on the wrong end of a split decision. "It was a good overall performance by our team," said Coach Evans. "A great evening well run and well supported." These young boxers getting international experience is a result of the Youth Development Program introduced and pushed by Evans. Working in conjunction with his Kiwi counterpart Regan Foley, in November this year we will have a visit from their national team for a major tournament in Queensland. â—?

MANGROVE JACK

CRABS ARE UP AND WALKING - SO KEEP AN EYE OUT ... With the swell and wind calming down, anglers were able to do the run outside. Snapper, grassy sweetlip and pearl perch have been the predominant species coming from North Reef. Whole ganged pilchards working the best for the snapper fished through a burley trail, rigging the baits on 3/0 ganged hooks using small ball sinkers to float the pillies down the burley trail. For the bottom basher's 60lb leader with a 6/0 octopus hooks on a paternoster rig and a 4oz snapper sinker has been the go-to rig for fishing the bottom. On Sunshine reef, venus tusk fish, squire, pearl perch, coral trout have all been boated. Live baits have been the key to getting the coral trout with slimey's and yakka's your best bet, also making sure the bait is fished hard against the bottom so sinker right down on the hook. Halls Reef has seen some nice grassy sweetlip, mac tuna and longtail tuna. With surf conditions also set to calm down a little we should see plenty of those sweet whiting. Light running ball sinker rigs with a size 6 bloodworm hook loaded with fresh worms or small peeled prawns is working well on whiting and dart. Flathead numbers are also good on the beaches on the Noosa North Shore. Jewfish and tailor have been caught on live baits and dead baits down on the southern beaches around Yaroomba and North of Teewah. Most fish have been taken after dark on the high tide. The Noosa River still has plenty of fresh water run off after the recent rains, some quality flathead have been caught in good numbers throughout the entire estuary system, with the mouth of Lake Cooroibah and Weyba Creek producing plenty of legal noosatoday.com.au

fish. Drifting with live biddies and large prawns has worked well along the deep drop offs along with soft plastics. Bream and whiting have come from the sand flats in the frying pan and the jetties along Gympie Terrace. Best Baits have been, live worms, fresh yabbies and frozen prawns. Inner Woods Bay and the first Ski Run have been producing a good variety of trevally species. Hard body lures and Micro jigs have been great when the fish are deep while surface lures have been perfect first thing in the morning and late afternoon. Mangrove Jack have been in good numbers around the mouth of Cootharabah, jetties along Sheep Island stretch and the mangroves in between the lakes, taking a wide range of live and dead baits, bonito fillet, live biddies and live poddy mullet. Crabs are also really starting to come on as the water warms and the influx of fresh water. Set your pots near mangroves in the deeper holes, fresh or frozen mullet is the perfect bait. Setting pots a little further down river will also see you with a feed of sand crabs. So on behalf of Jack Mangrove, best of luck on your fishing adventures! â—?
