MORE TO LOVE The editor’s desk Warwick people are justifiably proud of the reputation of our Rodeo as 'Australia's Most Famous'. There is a great deal of bush history and heritage associated with the Warwick Rodeo and so many legendary figures of both rodeo and campdrafting have written their names in the sands of the Showgrounds arena over so many decades. This year will be no different and there is no doubt that competition on both fronts will be fierce, for the right to be able to say you "won at Warwick". And once again, the event will be the result of countless hours of volunteer labour which makes the rodeo happen, both in the lead-up, during and afterwards. This year, with the drought, the rodeo will also be an opportunity for those off the land to get together and let their hair down - as well as the competition in the arena, it's also a huge social event. All of us here at the Free Times thank all of the volunteers for their tireless efforts, we welcome the many visitors to Warwick - and we wish all rodeo and campdraft competitors the very best for the big weekend to come. ABORTION DEBATE 'CONSCIENCE' VOTE BY JEREMY SOLLARS Southern Downs State MP James Lister last week spoke out in parliament against the Palaszczuk Government's new abortion law. State MPs were granted a 'conscience' vote on the legislation, which passed through parliament last Wednesday night, 17 October. Labor's 'Termination of Pregnancy Bill 2018' allows abortion to 22 weeks, and thereafter with the permission of two doctors. It will also enforce 150m 'safe access zones' to restrict protesters around
termination clinics and remove all references to abortion from the Queensland Criminal Code. In his speech on the bill last week James Lister pointed out that no convictions had ever been handed out under the previous abortion law in Queensland "in 100 years", meaning abortion had been effectively legal - and widely available - and therefore questioning the need for any new law on abortion. But he said he opposed Labor's bill, expressing concern over the ability it would give women to obtain 'late-term' abortions past 22 weeks of pregnancy, saying such a
scenario was "disturbing". He also said the law would increase abortions based on "sex selection". "We know there is evidence that at 22 weeks, or even at 20 weeks a baby can be viable," Mr Lister told parliament. "There was an instance where a pregnant woman was murdered and her killer was convicted on two counts of murder - and in that case the child was at 10 weeks. "And if a child is stillborn at 22 weeks a death certificate is issued. "That's formal recognition that we are talking about a person." ●

NO GO FOR TISSUE FACTORY BY JEREMY SOLLARS
Work on Terrain Solar farm just "preliminary".
RESIDENTS QUESTION WORKS BY JEREMY SOLLARS The Southern Downs Regional Council has advised residents at Sladevale just north of Warwick that work on a 154 hectare solar farm in their district has not commenced, despite work crews being on site in the last fortnight. Residents had questioned what appeared to be the start of construction of the solar farm by Terrain Solar when vehicles, machinery and workers turned up on site. Under conditions imposed on the project by the council work is not to commence until the council has received a report from Terrain Solar stating that electromagnetic radiation (EMR) levels from the solar farm will not exceed current health guidelines. Residents were advised via email by Mayor Tracy Dobie late last week that the work on site is "preliminary" and involves the "excavation of test pits and boreholes". Cr Dobie also stated that the EMR report from Terrain Solar had not yet been received. Terrain Solar will hand the project over to the University of Queensland when construction begins. The solar farm was approved by the council in June of this year despite

objections from Sladevale and wider Warwick area residents about its size, loss of prime farming land and the visual impact on the Sladevale and Campbells Plains district. It was revealed after the council approval that a prior deal had been done between Terrain Solar and the University of Queensland for the University to take ownership of the solar farm. Since the council's approval in June the Queensland Government released new guidelines on solar farm location which state that prime farming land should be avoided. The guidelines are seen by communities affected by solar farms as the government playing "catch up" with the burgeoning solar industry in Queensland. Councils elsewhere in Queensland and interstate have refused solar farms on highquality agricultural land in recent times, including at Kingaroy earlier this year and in Corangamite Shire in south-west Victoria just last month. In the Victorian case the Corangamite council also accepted arguments by residents about visual impacts, drainage, "glint and glare" and nearby property devaluations. ●

Toilet paper manufacturing giant ABC Tissue will not proceed with a manufacturing plant in Warwick, a company spokesman confirmed this week. The company purchased a number of vacant parcels in the Kenilworth Street industrial estate in late 2016 for an estimated $4 million, understood to be with the original intent of establishing a production site. But a spokesman from the company's head office in Sydney told the Free Times the plan was off the table and they would retain the industrial estate land acquisitions as "an investment". He said ABC Tissue was currently looking at a site in Melbourne to expand its manufacturing operations. The company's brands include Quilton toilet paper and it also manufactures facial tissues, kitchen towels and napkins. It has existing manufacturing facilities in Brisbane and Sydney and a current workforce of 600.
Previous published forecasts indicated ABC Tissue would be the largest tissue manufacturer in the Australia/New Zealand region by the end of 2017, producing some 140,000 tonnes of tissue product a year and would be looking at export opportunities. The company was established by former Hong Kong resident Henry Ngai soon after he arrived in Australia in the mid-1980s, originally working out of his suburban garage and importing tissue material from Hong Kong, before moving into a small factory in the Sydney suburb of Lansvale. ABC Tissue now reportedly turns over around $400 million worth of product a year. Between September and November 2016 entities associated with ABC Tissue are understood to have purchased five parcels of land in the Axis Industrial Estate off Kenilworth Street, home to Grove Juice and transport operator Qube Logistics. The sale price of one of the parcels was $2,564,000 while the other four were priced between $246,000 and $381,000. ●

IT’S CALLED
‘CATTLE SENSE’ W BY JEREMY SOLLARS
e know the cowboy enjoys most of the limelight when it comes to rodeo - but the protection bullfighter plays an equally important, if sometimes slightly overlooked role when the action fires up in the arena. As we prepare for a big weekend of bucking bulls and broncs on the sands of the Warwick Showgrounds - at 'Australia's Most Famous' Rodeo - the Free Times caught up with one of the legendary figures of rodeo in Australia, Graham Borghero. Graham, who resides at Rosenthal Heights where he has his own bullfighter training and roping arena, is one of Australia's - and the world's - best-known and most successful protection bullfighters and rodeo clowns. He began fighting bulls way back in 1977 and started doing his comedy clown acts two years later, and while he has well and truly "closed the door" on that career he still looks back on it with fondness.
In the earlier days of rodeo the clown and the bullfighter were usually one and the same - keeping the crowd entertained during breaks and keeping the cowboys safe - but in more recent years the roles have become defined quite separately, with the protection side of the job evolving into a skill set all of its own. In simple terms, the protection bullfighter's role is twofold - in the first instance it involves encouraging the bull to buck to his full potential, thereby increasing the potential score for the rider, and then to assist the cowboy to safety when the ride is over by distracting the bull sufficiently to allow a rapid getaway. It's a vital job which requires, as Graham puts it, "cattle sense" first-up, but also agility and fitness - and courage, as in one sense it's even more dangerous than riding the bull itself. Graham learnt his skills both on the Australian rodeo circuit and early on also spending several years in the late '70s and early '80s travelling between home - which in those days was Moree - and the United States and Canada, learning from rodeo
clown legends like America's Quail Dobbs, honing his trade and adapting comedy routines and ideas he saw into his own performances while working the North American rodeo circuit full-time. Eventually, the red tape of work visas and the wearying nature of constant overseas travel saw him confine his career to Australia and New Zealand, working the national circuit from the mid 1980s onward. At the time his 'day job' was working for a company laser-levelling cotton fields, who were generous enough to give him time off when show season was on. In the latter part of his career, as well as continuing to work the Aussie show and rodeo circuit Graham also began passing on his knowledge and skills to a new generation of protection bullfighters, running training schools in his home arena. "There's just so much talent out there on the rodeo scene today," Graham told the Free Times. "I've been fortunate enough to work with younger guys like Darrell Diefenbach and Phil Knapp, who've gone on to have successful careers in Australia and North
America, and earning big money too. "A lot of these guys have cattle experience when they start out - like helicopter mustering - so they've got good cattle sense to start with, and that's really important. "You've got to be fit as well. "When I was doing it I used to skip and run a lot, whereas guys like Darrell do lots of squats for exercise. "Looking back I wish I'd done that instead of running - my knees are worn out. "I also followed a pretty strict diet to keep my weight down - a lot of fruit - these days I can hardly stand to look at an apple. "When I was starting out I didn't have anyone to give me advice, which is why I really enjoy working with the younger guys now. "At the end of the day bullfighting is all about experience. "I'm probably a bit of a hard taskmaster but it's like anything in life - you put the effort in and you'll get the rewards out of it. "These guys will show me videos of them working and I'll point things out to them I think they can improve - if you want to be good you've got to be told the truth."

Graham says bullfighting isn't that dangerous - even though he's had his own fair share of gorings and tramplings - if you're confident in what you're doing. "I've jumped a lot of bulls and yes there is a dangerous side to it," he said. "But once you have experience and you're mentally confident in what you're doing and in your ability it becomes easy. "Safety for yourself always comes first - things can go wrong and that's were experience comes in." With Graham's bullfighting and clowning career now over, he's concentrating on his training programs, breeding Corriente cattle - a breed used primarily for rodeo - and his passion for roping, which will take him back to the United States in the near future. "When I close the door on something, that's it," he says. "But it was a lot of fun over a lot of years. "It's the ultimate adrenalin rush."

Residential water consumption in the town areas of Warwick and Stanthorpe continues to be significantly above the Southern Downs Regional Council's daily water target of 200 litres per person per day. Southern Downs councillors at their October general meeting held on Wednesday of this week, 24 October received the latest water use reports from council staff. The reports show that daily water use per person per day for the month of September in Stanthorpe was approximately 260 litres, while in Warwick it was just over 250 litres. Killarney and Dalveen residents also missed the daily target for September, both using approximately 350 litres per person per day for the month. All other towns using council water Wallangarra, Allora, Leyburn, Pratten and Yangan all used less than 200 litres per person per day - with Yangan's use the lowest of all at around 125 litres. Yangan and Wallangarra were the only two towns where the daily per person usage was below 200 litres for September 2017.

Around 600 landholders in the region will receive a 'supplementary rates notice' in November for failing to comply with the Southern Downs Regional Council's Invasive Pest Control Scheme (IPCS). A report to the October meeting of the council on Wednesday of this week states that "approximately" 600 landholders failed to submit a Control Works Form for 2018-2019 as required under the scheme. The forms outline the measures a landholder intends to take during the financial year to control pest animals and plants on their rural properties. The report to council states "IPCS information packs" were issued to 5309 landholders on 25 June 2018. "The submission period for Control Works Forms (CWFs) was extended to 10 August 2018 to act as a reminder for landholders to submit CWFs, to provide more time for staff to enter CWFs on Council's systems and to reduce the number of reminder letters required to be issued," the report states. "1,560 reminder letters were issued on 16 August 2018. "The submission period for CWFs closed on 17 September 2018. "As at 4 October 2018, 4,719 CWFs (89%) have been received, with fewer than 600 outstanding." The report says a "degree of leniency" was offered to landholders in the first year of the Scheme in 2017-2018 but that to "continue to build momentum and support for the IPCS it is imperative to enforce the provisions of the IPCS Policy". When the time comes, stop for a minute... BY JOHN SKINNER
Wherever they were, Australians stopped what they were doing and stood in silence for two minutes at 11am on November 11. This photo is from 1951.

Monash always praised their bravery. Now that the Germans were in full retreat the Australian diggers never allowed them to form any decent defensive barrier from then to the Hindenburg Line, known by the enemy as the Siegfried Line. The heads of the German military knew there were hundreds of thousands of American troops on their way to France and unless they were able to reach a peaceful settlement, their country would be invaded, so the call went out for an armistice.

Monash then planned a 'text-book' battle which resulted in the township of Hamel being re-taken from the Germans in 94 minutes. The Australians, backed by a British Division, then went on to defend Amiens from a massive German offensive - they then won battles at Peronne and Mont St Quentin which started the German army into a disorganised retreat. By having American troops under his command, Monash became the first and only foreigner to lead US troops in battle.
EP88666
At this time, 100 years ago, the German military machine was in disorder. Their massive defensive Hindenburg Line had been breached, their army had been unable to stop the rampaging Australian and Canadian divisions backed by fresh American troops and their morale and will to fight had taken a beating. The Australian troops, under Lieutenant General Sir John Monash, were being pulled out for rest after almost six months of non-stop fighting which had broken the back of the enemy and they were destined to stay in reserve for what was left of The Great War or the 'War to end all Wars', as it was to become known. The Australian victories had started in May 1918 when Monash's 4th Australian Division repelled the German offensive aimed at recapturing Villers-Bretonneux and the township was handed over to the British to defend. A short time later, another German offensive captured the township from the British, a bitter pill for the Australians to swallow after having so valiantly defeated the first German offensive. An immediate recapture was ordered and the Australian 13th and 15th Brigades made an unconventional night attack, one from the north, the other from the south, and surrounded the Germans, driving them from the village and adjacent woods.
The last shots were fired just before 11am on November 11, 1918 and Australia stopped to count the losses. A total of over 60,000 killed, 200,000 wounded or gassed and later, many, many more died as a result of the war after arriving home. That's why we remember them! Australia and New Zealand, per head of population, had more people killed than any other country and in an Australian population of less than 4.5million virtually every household had been touched by the war. It was called Armistice Day but after World War II and the Korean War it was changed to Remembrance Day. For many years, the nation stopped at 11am on November 11 for two minutes to remember those who had fallen. The time was reduced to one minute some years ago - now many don't even remember why services are held at Cenotaphs and War Memorials. In Warwick on Sunday 11 November from 10.15am, a memorial service will be held not only to remember those killed and wounded in World War I but 40,000 more killed in World War II and those killed serving Australia in wars since. When the sound of the bugle rings out across the town and in the shopping centre, those who appreciate the memory of those killed will stand motionless for one minute. ●

POLICE HUNT SUSPECT Warwick Police are still hunting for a man who assaulted a young woman on Rose Street in the Glennie Heights area of Warwick on the evening of Tuesday 2 October. The woman aged in her twenties pulled her vehicle over to the side of the road around 6.15pm due to engine problems, with a man stopping to assist her but later assaulting her by slamming her head against the vehicle. Police are also investigating a sexual assault. A spokesman for the Warwick Police Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB) told the Free Times police had staged a re-enactment of the incident at the Rose
Street location in the hope it would jog someone's memory but no-one had come forward as a result. He said police were still waiting on results of forensic testing. The man in question is described as Caucasian, aged between 30 and 40, approximately 175cm in height and of chubby build, with a dark, full beard and dark hair (police comfit image pictured). He was wearing a dark blue tradie shirt with sleeves rolled up, matching shorts and tradie style boots. His vehicle is described as an older white, single-cab, trayback utility. The victim's vehicle was a white 1996 Nissan Patrol wagon with a bullbar and raised suspension. People are urging anyone who witnessed the attack - including anyone with dashcam footage who may have been passing the scene to contact them. · If you have information call the Warwick Police Station on 4660 4444 or provide it anonymously to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
Starting in Wagga Wagga and ending in Sydney, the march spanned over 550 kilometres through hot sun, drenching rain and sleeping rough along the way. The free event on Friday 2 November will begin at 10:30am in the Warwick Library meeting room Register for catering purposes. For more or to register, call SDRC on 1300 MY SDRC (1300 697 372).
BUCKETS FROM COUNCIL
Warwick researcher and author Deborah Wheeler.
KANGAROO ANZAC The Southern Downs Regional Council invites all residents to join local author Deborah Wheeler (pictured) as she introduces her new children's book, 'My Pop was a Kangaroo Anzac'. Deborah will discuss how she came to write the book with Southern Downs residents at Warwick Library on Friday 2 November. The Regional Arts Development Fund helped fund the project which tells the story of William James Wheeler as he participated in the Kangaroo March, a journey many young men undertook in 1915 to enlist in World War 1.
The Southern Downs Regional Council is giving away free nine-litre water buckets to residents as part of water conservation efforts in the region. The free buckets will be available from next Monday 29 October before the region moves to high level water restrictions on Thursday 1 November. Residents can drop into the council's Stanthorpe and Warwick Administration Centres or the Allora office to pick up their free nine litre bucket or any of council's other water saving tools. The council's other water saving initiatives including the Water Tank Rebate, free shower timers and other free water saving devices such as showerheads and outdoor sprinklers. For more information on water restrictions and SDRC's water saving initiatives contact 1300 MY SDRC (1300 697 372) or visit www.sdrc.qld.gov.au

ALL EYES ON MOONEE VALLEY All eyes will be on Race Eight at Moonee Valley on Saturday afternoon to watch champion mare Winx aiming to win her fourth Cox Plate and a chance to rewrite the history of the race. Waller, Bowman and connections believe the seven year old mare is cherry ripe for the race. The popularity and pulling power of the mare is evident with Moonee Valley a sellout on Saturday. There are no certainties in life and racing but everyone will have their fingers crossed that the Winx fairytale continues on Saturday. With several international runners lining up there is an extra air of expectation around the race. I for one will be glued to a TV screen somewhere between Cairns and Stanthorpe so I don't miss a moment of this history making event. Even if you are not a racing fan this is one race you should not miss. - Casey STANTHORPE JOCKEY CLUB CHALKS UP ANOTHER SUCCESS The Stanthorpe Jockey Club committee breathed a collective sigh of relief after the weather gods smiled kindly on them last weekend. The Stanthorpe Cup meeting went off without a hitch and again proved to be one of the highlights of the year on the social and sporting calendar. Locals and visitors frocked up and trainers, owners and jockeys supported the annual race meeting. It again highlighted the importance of these days to the local community and the racing fraternity. Connections of the Tony Sears trained Well Sighted were thrilled with the win of the six old in the K & A Country Cups Challenge / Stanthorpe Cup. Despite beginning awkwardly and losing ground early the six year old Gonski gelding balance up well and ran home to win easily. Ridden by claiming apprentice Brooke Mackie, the Sear's trained galloper w on by two lengths from Calypso Bay who shifted out under pressure at the top of the home straight. In third place was another Toowoomba galloper Isn't She Elegant. The winner started at $5.50 and landed some nice bets. Favourite Lands Office finished a disappointing sixth. The win assures the gelding a start in the final of the $70,000 Country Cups Challenge at Doomben on December 1. President of thee Stanthorpe Jockey club, Neil "Chips: Brunckhorst applauded the Qld Racing concept saying the inclusion of the Stanthorpe Cup in the qualifying races was a real boost for the club. Punters got their day off to a flyer. The opening event was won by the $2.70 favourite, The Showman - the first of several runners leading trainer Ben Currie brought to teh meeting. The Stanthorpe RSL / MJ Cleaners Maiden was an action packed race. The Warwick trained Behind the Thistle bucked shortly after the start dislodging jockey Vanessa Johnston. Johnston was treated on course and stood down from her remaining rides. She was taken to the Stanthorpe hospital for observation. Oakey trainer Ben Waller saddled up two runners in the race and took home first and third prize money. The winner Kamilaroi started at the good odds of $11 and in a tight finish narrowly beat Yazzi Jean ($8) and stable mate Hey Doll ($6). The Queensland Country Credit Union QTIS Benchmark 55 was also won by an 22 SOUTHERN FREE TIMES

Brooke Mackie, Leigh Sears, Ian Brady, Bill Kerr, Neil Brunkhorst and Melissa Kerr. Photo - Stuart Rayner Oakey visitor. The Ben Park galloper, Mac's Gal ran right up to its recent good from and was well ridden by experience rider Paul Hamblin. The winner started $2.50 favourite at lumped 61kgs over the 1000 metre journey and won by 2.5 lengths landing some good bets. The meeting wrapped up with the running of the Crisps Coaches / Stanthorpe Border Post Handicap over the 1400metre journey. The winner Crafty Aquila ($5.50) is trained in Dalby by David Reynolds and was ridden by jockey Pietro Romeo. In a tight finish the winner beat Kastanos ($8) and Choppa ($8). Gatton galloper Rahadane looked a little unlucky after he was held up for a run in the straight and finished mid field. It was a day where punters looked to have finished second to the bookmakers but the party atmosphere prevailed with many patrons staying on for the post race entertainment. WATERWORTH WINS SPORTERS Matt Waterworth claimed a win at Sporters last Sunday morning when he relegated perennial bridesmaid Jim Mitchell to the runners up position. Matt Waterworth certainly had a great morning. In addition to the win he finished the round with the Best Gross and also took the Pin Shot at the 12th and the Pro Pin leaving not much else for the remainder of the field. Run-downs went to Paul Leotta and Mark Lynam and Len Leigh was fortunate enough to pick up the Pin shot at the 17th. The lucky meat tray winners were Terry Byrnes and Phil Zikan. Regular Sporters players are reminded that they can enjoy a day off on Sunday as the normal Sporters round makes way for play in the Stanthorpe Open. Sporters will return e following week at the normal tee off time between 7.30am 8.00am TANNY BOWLS BUSY 16 Teams filled the greens at the Tannymorel Bowls club on Thursday for the Monthly triples event. The weather was excellent, the greens in great shape and it was by all accounts a fun day for all especially the Ole Fellas from Warwick Trev Wright, Ed Welsh and Steve Tyter. Collecting the runners up prize was the local team of Sue Butz, Geoff Creighton and Grumpy. Round One results looked like this. The winning team had a 13-6 victory over Brian, Jo Strthum and Tony Shubert. Ron Philps, Marg Wright and Pedro Collis had an 11-8 win over Cita Weier, Greg Dent and Geoff Davies. Lyn Mulchay, Yvonne Campbell and Wendy Nerney had a 13 - 6 win over Ray Lawson and Julie and Allen Buse. Local team of Prickles, Paint Brush Davidson and Johno Johnson defeated arch rivals Bill Lee, Lorna R and Walshy 12- 7. Kay Bloomfield, Shep and Mick O'Leary
Thursday, 25 October, 2018
had a 13-6 win over Di Walsh Hal Catchpole and Ralph Tate. Other winners were P Seibelt, Doug and Bev Christensen. The team had a 14-5 Tom Seaniger, R Bean and Phil Wagner. Gordie Assay Tuck and Les Clark were 15-4 winners over Sue Butz Geoff Creighton and Grumpy. KEEPING POWDER DRY Down on the range at Inglewood they managed to keep their powder dry on Sunday for the monthly Muzzle Loading Competition. Goondiwindi's Terry Fairbanks took out the event with a score of 91/100. Breathing down his neck and finishing in second place was the inform Tom Donald with a score of 90/100. Filling third place was Rechelle Priverta from Coolumunda who was firing a .32 calibre Squirrel Gun. Rechelle scored a creditable 88/100 against her opponents who were firing 2 x .45 calibre Kentucky Rifles. Just proves how accurate these old times can be - no not Terry and Tom - the rifles they were using. This weekend the club is holding a Practical Shooting Match Pistol on Saturday at 1.00pm. On Sunday it is a 9.00am start for Rimfire Rifle and also Military Pistol Competition. The club welcomes visitors and Firearm Accuracy Tests may be done at the range. The cost is $50.00 per person. Please contact Tom Donald ph: 0439795919 for further details. Follow all club events on the Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/pages/ Sporting-Shooters-Association-of-AustraliaInglewood-Branch-Inc/253643571426626 TANNY CLASSIC ROUND 1 Round one of the current Tanny Classic was decided on Friday night and there was a big roll up. Players were keen to enjoy some fun, bowls, plenty of laughs and a top meal. First round winners picking up five points the leader board are Ryan Boal, Wayne Petersen and Coire Burmester The runner up, Damo Boal, Jimbo Lamb and Suzie Butz picked up four points are on the board. The winning team scored an overwhelming 18-7 win over Mogo, Scotty Petersen and Jessie Wallace. In other games Quinton and Lochy Boal teamed up with Walshy to defeat Ash Coleman, Glen Boal and Aaron 15-7. Abby Petersen Ken Armstrong and Thommo were 10-8 winners over Lyn Coleman Di Walsh and Rossco. The evenings runner's up had a 12-3 win over Liam McKinney Stu Hoffman and Shep Well done to all those who played but if you didn't get to roll a bowl down last week don't despair - It's not too late to join the fun. Simply nominate by 6.00pm on Friday evening and be ready to bowl by 6.30pm. You don't need to be a bowler - so why not get along have a game and stay on for the raffles and a meal.
MEN'S STABLEFORD Thirty players who obviously find golf more tantalizing than horse racing gave the race meeting at Armstrong Park a miss last Saturday preferring to hit the greens taking full advantage of the perfect weather conditions for golf. The winner of the Men's Stableford competition was Keith Jones. His score of 43 points got him past the post first. Keith's front nine produced the bulk of the score - 25 points. The remaining 18 points were scored on the run home. He also held the pro pin at 1/10. Runner up was Matt Waterworth (40 points). Waterworth also claimed the pin shot at 12 and the 0 Alan Kerr collected the pin at three with an accurate tee shot. He's hoping hope he remembers how he did that. Bob Thorne from Wantima GC, held the pro-pin at 5/14 and a ball in the run down. Scott Constable held 9/18 pro-pin as well as a ball in the run down. Things were a little closer in the ladies event where a count back was required to split Linda Kelly and Lyn Ludlow. It was Linda who got the nod from the judges. Helen Jones collected the pin at 3 and Trish Fittock had the best approach at 17. ATTENTION TURNS TO STANTHORPE OPEN CARNIVAL THIS WEEKEND It is a major event on the Stanthorpe Golf Club calendar and is sponsored by Maddie's Gift Gallery and the City Golf Club in Toowoomba. Stanthorpe Greenkeeper Bill Pyne has the course in near perfect condition following the recent rain. A small army of volunteers has been assisting Bill prepare the course for the weekend. The response to the Carnival has been excellent and it is booked out on both days. Visiting players from Clifton, Allora, Inglewood, Caboolture, Jindalee, Kooralbyn Valley, Gailes, Calliope, Maryborough, Millmerran, Texas, Tenterfield, Warwick and Toowoomba City will join local members in what should be a great weekend of competition. Saturday's competition is a medley four ball Stableford. There will be two shot gun starts, an early start for the morning players followed by an 11.45 am start for the afternoon group. It will be followed by a single stroke for men and Stableford for the ladies on Sunday. Players who have not yet nominated can add their name to the reserve list by contacting the Club Secretary. Please be aware of your tee times and arrive at least 20 minutes prior to tee off to help the event run smoothly. HONOURING ROSS The Rossow Family generously donated ten new flag poles to the Stanthorpe Golf Club in honour of Ross Rossow passed away in 2017. Ross Rossow was a great supporter of the club and last Saturday the new flagpoles were presented to the Club's Greenkeeper Bill Pyne and Club Captain Richard Reardon by Ross' daughter Nikki Waterworth. Ross' wife Glennis and three generations of the family, including son Brad and daughters-in-law Sherelle and Anealia and grandchildren Michael, Catherine, Imogen and Caitlin attended the presentation. The flagpoles with new flags will be in situ in time for the Stanthorpe Golf Carnival this weekend. freetimes.com.au
