Winner Successful Endeavours Finalists Ki Creative Marcomms Australia
Ray and Junette Keefe and the team at Successful Endeavours.
ENDEAVOURING TO BE THE BEST Successful Endeavours has a long and proud association with the Casey Cardinia Business Awards. In the program’s inaugural year in 2010 Successful Endeavours was named the Casey Business of the Year and was joint winner in the Business and Professional Services category and a finalist in the Manufacturer of the Year category. Successful Endeavours won the Business and Professional Services category in 2012, 2013, 2015 and 2016. It was also a nominee last year. This year that proud record continues with another win in the Business and Professional Services category. The Narre Warren based firm designs electronics based products that are intended to be manufactured in Australia. This encompasses infrastructure
grade industrial controls, power water and waste monitoring and management, electrical distribution equipment, telemetry devices including the Internet of Things (IoT), security systems, automotive controllers, communications equipment, and even a mobile phone. Founder Ray Keefe said the firm’s aim was to provide affordable, world-class product development services that allow customers to be locally and internationally competitive in their chosen market. Mr Keefe said clients get direct access to the potential for huge improvements in product function, reliability and margin through applying the right mix of electronics hardware and software to both new and existing market opportunities. “And we can also manufacture the
product for you if you want that too,” Mr Keefe said. Successful Endeavours was recently involved in helping develop an early detection system that detects equipment faults and vegetation ingress affecting rural powerlines. It helped start-up firm IND Technology with its Early Vegetation Fault Detection system for SWER (single wire earth return) systems. Based on state-of-the-art high speed digital signal processing technology and specialised RF antenna sensor technology, IND Technology designed an Early Fault Detection system that remotely monitors and detects partial discharges on overhead distribution lines and underground cable systems on a continuous 24 hour basis.
Mr Keefe said the the technology was “a world first developed in Melbourne”. “Every second, each device in the field sends a log of sophisticated mathematical data to the web services where it is stored and then passed through to a server cluster that analyses the data and determines the overall electrical health of the network as well as specific fault locations,” Mr Keefe explained. “The technology relies on the atomic clocks on board the GPS satellites as well as some high speed local FPGA processing.” Mr Keefe said EVFD was a great example of technology designed and made in Casey gaining national recognition. “The result is a Victorian based startup now positioned to take this technology nationally and then internationally.”

CRUISING TO ANOTHER WIN RETAIL Sponsor
Winner Davey Marine Finalists Berwick Auto Electrics and Mechanical In Beauty
Davey Marine has sailed away with the award as the Casey Cardinia Region’s best retail business. The award means back to back wins for Davey Marine, which took out the title of Best New Business last year. Davey Marine / Compleat Angler Pakenham is a one stop marine shop. A full workshop services the local, metro and interstate market, while the retail facility incorporates new/used boats, outboard engines, marine accessories and an in-house Compleat Angler bait and tackle store. Owner Adam Davey said his Pakenham business, which sells new and used recreational boats, prided itself on quality, whether it’s for an engine service, electronics upgrade or custom fit up of a new vessel. Davey Marine sells a select range of new and used boats and a full range of boating accessories and safety gear.
Staff are fully qualified and the mechanics are highly trained using the latest in diagnostic equipment. “Our key point of difference is our technical expertise and skill which translates into delivery of superior levels of workmanship and customer service,“ Mr Davey said. “To our customers this means reassurance and confidence in our workmanship and a reliable and consistent level of products and services, all of which ensures their time on the water is safe and enjoyable. Davey Marine operates in a niche market and goes to great lengths to build brand awareness, maintain brand recognition, build customer loyalty and differentiate themselves from their competition. The team works across a range of engines including Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki, Mercury, Mercruiser and Evinrude.

Raise a cheer for Evolve All Stars, winner of this year’s award for Best New Business. The Cranbourne West business was established by three sisters, Ascha Boag, Bronte Miles and Gemma Miles, who are passionate about all star cheerleading. All star cheerleading is an athletic sport that involves many components put together in a two and a half minute routine involving stunting, tumbling, jumping and dance. The sport requires a high level of teamwork while also relying on participants to execute their individual roles. Team members utilise their strengths to maximise the overall team performance. The sisters say they wanted to inspire future athletes by offering a fun, friendly and inclusive atmosphere. They say Evolve All Stars is a place where athletes can “evolve” their skills both on and off the floor. Their visions seems to be working with enthusiastic support from parents on the Evolve All Stars website.
THE BEST TURF ON EARTH TOURISM Sponsor
Winner Cranbourne Turf Club Finalists Safir Tours Exodus Travel Agency
The Cranbourne Turf Club has crossed the winner’s post in first place, picking up the award for best Tourism business. The turf club has evolved into one of the City of Casey’s premier entertainment facilities, with thoroughbred racing throughout the year and night race meetings running from October to May. The Cranbourne Racing Centre is the only centre in Victoria that conducts three codes of racing - thoroughbred, harness and greyhound. It has become a destination venue and not only for racegoers. The club also hosts many non-race day functions including birthdays, weddings, school formals and graduations, gala balls, conferences, product launches, carnivals, birthdays and Christmas celebrations. The Cranbourne Cup meeting is one of the district's premier sporting and social events - atttracting huge crowds and the cream of the racing crop. Last year the race was won by the world's biggest and richest racing stable - Godolphin - when imported galloper Folkswood saluted before going on to run third behind turf champion Winx in the Cox Plate. This year Folkswood returned but was denied by the Mick Price trained Octobello and ridden by local jockey Noel Callow, who always adds a bit of colour to the occasion. This year he did just that by performing a star jump made famous by champion British jockey Frankie Dettori - as he dismounted. The club has a long and proud history. Racing commenced at Cranbourne with a two day meeting on 22 and 23 April 1867. Racing ceased in 1941 resuming post World War 2 in 1947. When the club reformed there were 24 men elected to the committee, a marked difference to the nine currently serving on the Committee. The first Cranbourne Cup was won by Toryboy, who two years earlier had won the Melbourne Cup. Cranbourne's link to the most famous day on the Australian turf continues, now hosting a race meeting on Melbourne Cup Day. In 1947 bookmakers were the only ones taking on-course bets. On-Course Totalisator Betting did not commence until 1954. One of the champions of the turf, Manikato, won his first start at Cranbourne as a two-year-old in 1978. Manikato went on to win the Blue Diamond Stakes, Golden Slipper, Ascot Vale Stakes and the Caulfield Guineas all in 1978. From modest beginnings the turf club’s on course turnover has increased to one of the highest country clubs in the state.

Winner The Amazing Grace Finalists Settlers Run Golf and Country Club Brunch on McBride
Located in Cranbourne’s old St Agatha’s church, The Amazing Grace has established itself as the up and coming dining venue in the South East. That reputation will be further enhanced by news that The Amazing Grace is the winner of the Casey Cardinia Business Award for Hospitality. Owner Paul White and his team have poured new life into the old church, which dates back to 1929. He has created a series of beautiful spaces offering a range of dining and drinking experiences. The Amazing Grace offers five distinct areas. Inside the chapel, the bar features original and restored leadlight windows and has great acoustics for live music. The upstairs loft lures visitors into the church’s original, exposed cathedral trusses and is used for corporate events, exclusive functions and intimate dining. The newly built Greenroom perfectly juxtaposes the old with the new. Mr White said its earthy design with wall gardens and a fireplace appeals to spontaneous pop-ins by locals and casual nights out, offering space for a long lunch, family dining and cheeky late-night cocktails. The walls of the Greenroom open to a laneway creating a sanctuary for alfresco dining. The laneway wraps around St Agatha’s to reveal a beer-garden with solid hand-crafted red gum tables. Mr White has 25 years’ experience in the hospitality business, bringing energy to his venues that have made them successful in tourist hot spots such as Mt Hotham, Dinner Plain and the Mornington Peninsula. Waverley Industries’ dominance of the Social Enterprise category continues in 2018 with a fourth consecutive win. Director and chief executive Frank Cresia put the business's extraordinary success down to its people. “Our success is our people,“ Mr Cresia said. “That’s our essence and our growth - people with disabilities.” Waverley Industries is a not-for-profit organisation enhancing the lives of people with disabilities by offering them meaningful employment in a supported environment. Waverley Industries provides skills and experience in packaging and assembly, hospitality and catering, storage and warehouse, woodwork or gardening. It commenced operations in November 1984 with the aim of providing employment opportunities for people with special needs, in particular adults with an intellectual disability. The business employs more than 270 people at its Notting Hill site and at its packaging factory in Star Crescent, Hallam. Waverley Industries opened its 4000-square metre factory in Hallam in 2016, creating 40 jobs for people with disabilities. Mr Cresia said the expansion enabled the business to develop its accredited training programs to neighbouring special schools. Racing looks to future
Sandown Racecourse's future redevelopment is being discussed by the owner and Greater Dandenong Council. Both have stated there's not yet been a formal application to rezone the famous venue that is home to horse track meets, Supercars racing and a variety of festivals and events. But plans are believed to have been drawn up for a mix of high-rise apartments, town houses, homes, a medical centre and shops on the site. The owner Melbourne Racing Club stated it had presented concept plans and technical information for the "future opportunity" but no final decision had been made. "It is correct to state that MRC have been engaging with Council and other authorities such as VicRoads, Melbourne Water, the Victorian Planning Authority ... regarding a future opportunity for Sandown," MRC spokesperson Laura Golden said. "This has included providing them with information to allow their comment, feedback and input. "(This) is a normal part of any process leading up to a formal lodgement. "We will continue current operations for the foreseeable future." According to council reports, councillors were given an update briefing on the "redevelopment" of Sandown on 3 September. Greater Dandenong city planning director Jody Bosman said the MRC was working with council officers to develop a "planning framework". The MRC had advised that a "detailed com-
munity consultation process" will happen in the near future, Mr Bosman said. The MRC and the council had been tightlipped on the discussions until MRC member and former Greater Dandenong mayor Peter Brown revealed details of the redevelopment plan. Mr Brown said the club's committee and the council appeared to be "colluding" to present the racecourse's closure as a "fait accomplit" to MRC members. The track could be closed as early as 2020 when car racing ends at Sandown, he said. In September, Mr Brown unsuccessfully ran for a spot on the MRC committee on a platform of retaining the racecourse as its "jewel in the crown". "It is one of the most majestic race courses in Melbourne," he said - citing its clear sightlines, track quality, fairness for all competitors and its general use by a range of groups. The course had been bought and built in the 1960s as a buffer in case the club's tenure at Caulfield was not renewed, Mr Brown said. The MRC recently announced its Caulfield lease was renewed for another 65 years. Speculation had been rife after Sandown was conspicuously overlooked as the new home of Caulfield's training stables. On 22 October, the State Government announced the facilities and horse trainers would instead be relocated to further-flung tracks in Cranbourne and Pakenham from mid-2020. There was no mention of Sandown's future in the $40 million joint initiative of the Government, Racing Victoria and the MRC.

A full workshop services the local, metro and interstate market, while the retail facility incorporates new/used boats, outboard engines, marine accessories and an in-house Compleat Angler bait and tackle store.

SMILES FOR FOUR IN A ROW SOCIAL ENTERPRISE Sponsor
Winner Waverley Industries Finalist Casey Basketball Association
Across its Hallam and Notting Hill locations, workers specialise in packaging solutions, assembly work, manufacturing, mail outs and catering. Mr Cresia said that Waverley Industries was proud to play an

important role in the lives of its employees. “Their work enriches their lives and builds their self-esteem, knowing that they are producing things that we, as a community, need,” he said. Testimonials on the company’s website point to motivated and happy
workforce. “I like making new friends and learning new skills,“ said David Kingma, a catering apprentice. “Waverley Industries has given me the chance and are supporting me in my apprenticeship in Commercial Cookery. I feel really good that I am learning and
contributing.“ Jenny Waugh said she loves working at Waverley Industries because the people there are always happy. “I love coming to work every day. It makes me feel independent because I contribute to the community,“ Jenny said.

Lost for words after win By Mick Floyd Pearcedale local Brad Greenough was lost for words after his exciting chaser Often Imitated booked her place in the heats of the TAB Melbourne Cup following her Prelude victory at Sandown Park on Thursday night. The night before her second birthday, Often Imitated was backed into favouritism late and despite only stepping fairly at box rise, railed brilliantly to record her seventh career victory in 29.40 seconds - the fastest of the Prelude wins. Greenough, a third-generation trainer and grandson of leading conditioners Kel and Jackie Greenough, took out his trainers license just six months ago and registered a win with his first starter. Less than six months later, the 20-year-old will put the polish on his first TAB Melbourne Cup heat runner. The gravity of the achievement hadn’t fully struck immediately following Often Imitated’s win. “The Melbourne Cup heats - it sounds funny to say that really doesn’t it?” he said. “It’s an overwhelming feeling of achievement. I know it’s only a heat, but it’s a Melbourne Cup heat. It’s something I never though could happen so early in my career.” Often Imitated has developed an affinity for Sandown Park - six of her wins have come at the circuit - and encouragingly, Greenough believes that there is still improvement to come from his Cup prospect. “When we had her early days we brought her here a lot and that really got her used to this track, and obviously you want your dog’s running well at Sandown so it helps. “She looked like she came out ok but it’s not the best she can get out. On a nice warm night I think she could get down to 29.3 hopefully. If she can do that, you can win big races. It’s just a matter of her early race; if she can come out early, she’s usually a chance.” In other action on Thursday night at Sandown Park, star New South Wales sprinter Miss Splendamiro also booked her ticket to the TAB Melbourne Cup heats after winning her Prelude by three-and-a-half lengths in 29.46 seconds. It was her first start for new trainer David Geall after being transferred to his Lara kennel for a tilt at the Melbourne Cup. A well supported favourite, Miss Splendamiro was forced to work her way around the field after drawing Box 8 and did so impressively. “She was sent down to us in really good condition; very fit, very muscly. I know how good she was because I’ve raced against her a fair bit,” said Geall. “We expected her to go well; she had to because she is really, really fast. It is a relief that she’s gone well I can tell you.” Geall will have a three-pronged attack on the world’s greatest greyhound race with Up Hill Jill and My Redeemer set to join Miss Splendamiro in the TAB Melbourne Cup heats on Friday 16 November.
Trainer Brad Greenough with Often Imitated after claiming a Prelude victory at Sandown Park. Other greyhounds to book their place on heats night were Vens Revenge (29.60), Dyna Oscar (29.51) and She’s Gifted (29.48). Earlier in the night, Black Opium maintained her unbeaten start to her career with another impressive victory. The daughter of TAB Melbourne Cup winner Black Magic Opal showed brilliant acceleration to charge through the first turn and race away from her rivals to score a win by threeand-three-quarter lengths in 29.46. It was her fifth win in as many starts with an average winning margin of eight lengths. Unsurprisingly, trainer Seona Thompson is excited for what lays ahead. “She’s something pretty special,” she said afterwards. “She’s just a baby. This is all fun for her, she has absolutely no idea what’s going on, she just turns up at the track and she’s just got a heap of ability that’s getting her there at the moment.”
Black Opium made her debut in a heat of the Vic Breeders series at Bendigo in September and has already amassed over $26,000 in prize money. That she has made such an impact on the track despite being just 19 months of age has come as no surprise to Thompson. “We trained her Mum (Captivating) and Dad (Black Magic Opal) so we thought there could be something special in the litter. She broke in very well, pre-trained very well - she has shown everything from day one,“ Thompson said. “She’s pretty easy to train; she just does her own thing. We gave her a few trials before her first start at Bendigo and she showed plenty in them. We actually fluked getting in to the Bendigo series - she turned 18 months on the day of the heats so she only just made it in, I guess it was just meant to be. It’s exciting to have another good one for (owners) Bill and Serge Buccilli.”
Picture: COURTESY OF SANDOWN GREYHOUNDS While a tilt at the TAB Melbourne Cup would be a huge ask for a young greyhound with limited experience, such a campaign would not be without precedent. Indeed, in 2006 Run’s House (trained by Seona’s husband Jason) also went through the Bendigo Vic Breeders maiden series before qualifying for the TAB Melbourne Cup and lining up in the final of the world’s greatest greyhound race at just 20 months of age and at career start number eight. To qualify, Black Opium would need to contest the final TAB Melbourne Cup Prelude series on Thursday 8 November, and if she was to make the final, would also be lining up for her eighth career start at 20 months of age. “Obviously we’ll see how she how she pulls up after tonight,“ Thompson said. “It’s a pretty big effort for a baby, but I’m not going to say she’s not going to be here in a few weeks.”
Celebrating 50 years of aths By Hayley Wildes The Springvale Little Athletics has long been a staple of the local Springvale community. It is a hub for families to come together and enjoy summer evenings competing with each other, supporting one another and volunteering. This season - which kicked off in October sees the Springvale Little Athletics Centre celebrate its 50th anniversary. It all began when the local APEX group called a meeting at the Springvale Council looking for interested participants, and before long, the club was formed on 24 September, 1968. Originally, the Springvale Little Athletics Centre was established with four clubs; St. Joseph’s Little Athletics Club, St. Antony’s Little Athletics Club, Noble Park Little Athletics Club and Springvale South Little Athletics Club. The first ever day of competition was held at Ross Reserve, Noble Park in November 1968. And 50 years later, the club still proudly calls Ross Reserve home. Pilon plunders the Bloods By Russell Bennett
A half-century from Springvale South star Steve Spoljaric wasn’t enough for his side to overcome Berwick, and a brilliant ton from Nathan Pilon. 186792 Picture: ROB CAREW Ian Daniel (1/30). Uni prevails over Panthers in a thriller By Russell Bennett Melbourne University escaped from Shepley Oval in Dandenong with the most thrilling of Victorian Premier Cricket wins on Saturday. Batting first, Melbourne Uni recovered from the loss of the early wickets of Tom Rogers (9) and Yousaf Iqbal (9) at 1/12 and 2/28 respectively to bounce back to 2/108 thanks to an 80-run stand from opener AJ Gregory (44) and Isaiah Borgas (80). With Gregory’s dismissal - run out by Ed Newman - Borgas combined with the rest of the middle order to mount an ultimately telling 6/230 from their 50 overs. Skipper James McNeil (15), Fergus McKenna (24), and Liam Scammell (32 not out) all made invaluable contributions in an innings where - clearly - every run counted. Akshat Buch (2/32) and Peter Sweeney (2/44) were the leading wicket-takers for Dandenong. The Panthers lost star skipper Tom Don-
nell for just nine early in their reply at 1/16. But when either Donnell or Brett Forsyth falls early, the other invariably takes up the scoring load and that’s exactly what Forsyth did on Saturday. He combined with Newman (28) for a valuable 50-run second wicket stand to get the ship back on course, and then later for a 100-run stand with returning Test paceman James Pattinson (46) for the fourth wicket. Crucially for Pattinson, and the Australian national set-up, he opened the bowling for the Panthers earlier in the day and got through his 10 overs - finishing with 1/42. But in Dandenong’s reply to Melbourne Uni, they lost Forsyth (82), Pattinson, and Sweeney (1) all within the space of three runs to go from being 3/177 at one stage to 6/180. From there it was up to the likes of Cam Forsyth (32 not out), Jacques Augustin (12) and James Wilcock (4) to mount a rescue mission. And the Panthers came agonisingly close -

finishing their 50 overs on 8/227, just four runs short of victory. John McLaughlan (2/30) and Gregory (2/49) were Melbourne Uni’s only multiple wickettakers from a game that will be remembered as a Premier thriller. By contrast, Casey-South Melbourne was blown out of the water early by a rampant Melbourne at the Albert Ground. Batting first, the home side amassed 2/304 from their 50 overs with Meyrick Buchanan smashing a near run-a-ball 154 from the top of the order. Keeper-batsman Sam Harper (47), Blake Thomson (60), and skipper Matt Brown (30 not out) also gave the Swans’ bowlers plenty of headaches. In their reply, the visitors were rolled for 189 in 42 overs, with Jared Maxwell top-scoring with 62 and Kieran Elliott (3/36) and Brad Melville (3/39) taking three wickets apiece for Melbourne.

Berwick has reconfirmed itself as a genuine threat in this Dandenong District Cricket Association Turf 1 season after an eye-catching win over Springvale South on the Bloods’ home turf. Former state player and Victorian Premier keeper-batsman Nathan Pilon was simply awe-inspiring at the top of the Berwick order after the visitors were sent in to bat. He blasted a whopping 176 not out as he steered his side to 3/251 from their 40 overs, with Jordan Cleland (38) the only other Bears batsman to reach 20. The Bloods fell well short in their reply, dismissed for 177 in the 37th over with star all-rounder Steve Spoljaric (a run-aball 58) once again top-scoring for the side. Brendan Rose, still new to the Bears, has continued to make a profound impact for Berwick - this time snaring 4/24 from his eight overs; while Darren De Souza (2/22), Isaiah Jassal (2/31), and Cory Bevan (2/31) all snared two scalps apiece. Meanwhile, new Buckley Ridges skipper - South African first class player - David White once again showcased his class with an unbeaten 85 as his side chased down Heinz Southern Districts’ 6/146 with seven wickets in hand (3/148). White is yet to be dismissed in Buckley Ridges colours this season, with Saturday’s clinical knock coming off the back of an unbeaten 105 against Dingley in the Twenty20 competition on Wednesday. On Saturday, he and DJ Watson (28) put on a 62-run opening stand to have their side well on the path to victory. Earlier in HSD’s innings Watson also a real impact with ball-in-hand, snaring 2/27 from his eight overs while Susantha Pradeep took an eye-catching 2/2 from five overs. Michael Davies top-scored for HSD with his 58 from the middle-order. North Dandenong, meanwhile, stunned the reigning premiers in their one-dayer at Ben
