A new book and display are sharing the history of Lilydale’s public places. Yarra Ranges Council commissioned the Lilydale and District Historical Society to carry out research late last year as part of its Place Plan for Lilydale. Nine society members compiled the first detailed history of the township’s open spaces, including how they developed and have been used. The society launched the 56-page book Lilydale’s Public Places Public Lives 1860s to 1970s on 6 October. It covers the Main Street, Melba Park, Olinda Creek, Lilydale Recreation Reserve, the Market Reserve, Lillydale Lake and the avenue of trees. They hosted celebrations, sporting events and disasters. Significant buildings such as the town’s hotels, the railway station and Cave Hill all played a part in creating the Lilydale of today. The nine researchers were Christine Armstrong, John Brown, Ray Dodson, Jeanette Dodson, Joy Gothe, Kristyn Jackson, Judy Macdonald, Jo Pritchard, Florence Shaw, Sue Thompson and Marg Tull.
Rivers and Ridges Yarra Ranges Council’s Rivers and Ridges project package is a step closer to gaining $10 million in federal funding. On Saturday 27 October in Kalorama, Casey MP Tony Smith announced that the council’s application for the Federal Government Regional Growth Fund initiative had progressed to a 16-project shortlist. The package includes the Warburton Mountain Bike Destination’s first stage, Yarra Valley Trail stage one, RidgeWalk and the Warburton Recreation Precinct. “A lot of work has gone into this and it’s really about tourism and local jobs,” Mr Smith said. “The Yarra Ranges is the number one desti-
nation in Victoria and we want to bring more people here to see everything it has to offer. “Many people have heard about different parts of the Yarra Valley and we want them to see the Dandenong Ranges as well. “We know that active tourism, where people want to get out of their cars and do things is growing.” Yarra Ranges Council’s environment and engineering director, Mark Varmalis, said the next stage was to submit the detailed business case to secure the $10 million grant. “The detailed business case requires council to show that it has the capacity to make the project work and that all the funding contributions are secured,” he said. “There is around $35 million of work to be done over the next two years or so.
“We expect the project to generate more than 750,000 new tourist visits, $80 million extra economic activity per annum and 535 new jobs in the area.” “A lot of the local economy is only surviving on weekend tourism, but these projects will bring seven-day-a-week tourism, and will really boost the local economy.” Yarra Ranges Mayor Len Cox said the projects would bring tourists from all around the world “to come and spend some time and dollars in our municipality”. La Trobe MP Jason Wood said the RidgeWalk would open up new possibilities for both the local and tourism communities. “Sometimes it can be pretty difficult to walk around the hills and this walk will link the whole area together,” he said.

“Also to capture the artistic and cultural experience is a great initiative. “The history points and sculptures and the focus on art and the landscape - just as artists like Roberts, Boyd and Streeton found in their great works - brings a different aspect for visitors.” Emma Jennings has recently opened a gallery in Sassafras and is excited about the place art will have in the project. “As artists it’s great to be able to connect all of the spaces together, both as a resident and a creative person,” she said. “It’s such a privilege to be connected with all of the other artists who have come to the hills to paint for hundreds of years and the indigenous community who have been doing it for much longer.”

IN BRIEF
Servo symposium By Derek Schlennstedt Yarra Ranges councillors have approved an application seeking to develop 53-55 Canterbury Road in Montrose. The development will seek to build a service station on the site, only metres from a neighbouring house. councillors approved the permit, though made changes to ensure the family would be minimally impacted. Stephen O’Brien from Universal Planning spoke to councillors on behalf of the family who he said were concerned about the noise and the fumes that would impact their home. “Councillors this development represents a very poor planning outcome” he said. “It has very little consideration given to the interface of our client’s property.” “The proposed station use is a very harsh and highly insensitive environment to what is a low key placid residential zone.” “If this proposal succeeds our client will endure unimaginably distressing outcome to their humanity daily.” “They will literally be living metres from the rear wall of the service station, and the food and drink premises abutting an anguishing
34 metre length wall measuring 3.5 metres in height.” “Toxic fumes build and vaporised petrol will operate on a 24-hour basis and this Is we have to say is the most serious concern to our client given that two of them have respiratory asthmatic problems.” Under the application a 24-hour service station, convenience shop, food and drink premises would be built and the development will also include five restricted retail premises, 48 warehouses and 79 storage units. During the advertising phase four objections were received by Council pertaining to the development and were largely in relation to noise, traffic, light pollution and contamination. A spokesperson for the application rebutted the concerns from councillors and residents and re-assured them that the development has been thoroughly examined and planned to ensure minimal impact on surrounding houses. “Obviously the service station is probably the most contentious part of this development but we have gone to great lengths to ensure the interface with the service station and adjoining residential properties is treated sensitively,” the spokesperson said.
“A Significant amount of work has gone into this proposal and we have worked closely with council officers and reached down at every opportunity, some of the things that have been put here and we understand that there is always a degree of contention but this context is a sensitive one and we have dealt with that by locating all the key activity areas away from it.” The spokesperson made special note of the three metre wide easement between the proposed development and the residential address. “The subject site sits two metres lower and between the rear wall of the service station you have a three metre wide landscaped reserve and then at ground level we are also proposing a two metre high acoustic wall designed to treat acoustic spillage of that property.” Councillors resolved to approve the planning permit, though put forth an alternate recommendation that required the applicant to reducing the operating hours from 24 hours, and to increase the height of the acoustic wall. “I believe that these conditions need to be altered to make it more bearable for the residents,” councillor Cox said.
MECS marks 45 years of lessons learnt Mount Evelyn Christian School (MECS) has marked its 45th anniversary. Across the year the school has celebrated with its students with special assemblies and cake for everyone, a 'back to the '70s' week with lots of events and dressing up by staff and students, a morning tea for parents, and a spe-
cial afternoon tea for the school's founders. A few highlights were having its three past principals and today's principal at the events, and cutting cake to mark the anniversary together. Another was to acknowledge the people that started MECS, who started dreaming
about a Christian school in Mount Evelyn back in the mid-1960s. They collected shillings and spent many years fund-raising so they could buy the block of land on the corner of York and Hawkins roads.

Topical creams for relief Because of the expanding knowledge of adverse side-effects of many medicines, people wonder about the benefits of the creams we see advertised and whether they might be safer than tablets. Anti-inflammatory medicines and creams are an interesting example. Oral non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDS) can have serious side-effects including stomach ulcers and bleeding as well as heart attack and stroke risks. Creams likely present a safer risk profile for people needing pain relief for structures close to skin (think ankle, knee, wrist and elbow, rather than deeper joints such as the shoulder, hip, spine) than oral NSAIDS since there is less exposure of the active ingredient to the whole person (including their gut). Studies show that for every six people using the cream, one person has a benefit greater

Physiotherapist, Dandenong Ranges Physio, Olinda than placebo, and that the placebo response is strong when it comes to these creams. There is little to no evidence suggesting that anti-inflammatory creams work for certain types of pain such as low back pain, headache or neuropathic pain. It is much more difficult to assess the myri-
ad of alternative creams and gels, since they do not need to pass the rigours of validated trials that pharmaceutical products do. They are often marketed aggressively despite weak or non-existent evidence, and quality controls during the manufacturing process are lax compared to medicines. You can walk into many chemist shops and see posters about the miraculous magnesium oil sprays that penetrate the skin, bypassing the gut and targeting your sore muscles directly (assuming you are low in magnesium, obviously). Most products quote the same weak evidence from quite a few years ago, that blood serum magnesium levels slightly increased after bathing in magnesium chloride, said to mimic the therapeutic benefits bathing in the Dead Sea. What they don’t tell you is that urine levels didn’t change, a raft of other blood markers also rose, levels only rose in ‘non-athletes’, the
sample size was tiny, and over a two-week period levels returned to normal. Also, a comprehensive literature review in 2017 found that there is no evidence to suggest magnesium oil can be absorbed topically and concluded that any benefit from using magnesium oil is likely due to a placebo effect. Pain relief for musculoskeletal conditions can occur with appropriate exercise, too, which is why physiotherapists will often prescribe safe and specifically-targeted exercise to speed recovery, prevent recurrence and improve functional outcomes for people with pain or movement problems. So while there is room for topical NSAIDs for specific and superficial pain in the short term, developing good behaviours, awareness and routine with respect to exercise and movement is likely the best way forward.

New hope in sight By Derek Schlennstedt Art has the uncanny ability to overcome all cultural and ethnic differences. Like a universal language it brings people together and for so many it is a means of escaping their reality and offers a way to express and distil how they feel about the world around them. So how would a Hazara man who has spent almost four years at a detention centre feel, and what would his art express? On October 27, as part of 'Patchfest', The Patch Primary School will unveil an exhibit of Naser's work- a Hazara man from Afghanistan. For the past year students from grade one to six have spoken to, leant from and even visited Naser at his Detention Centre. Through Naser's evocative and stunning art he portrays his journey from Afghanistan to Australia and the time he has spent awaiting freedom. Sofia Walsh, art teacher at The Patch Primary said the school connected with Naser through her involvement with Kindred, a group of compassionate people supporting people seeking Asylum who informed Sofia about Naser's artistic prowess. Since then the school have regularly been in contact with Naser , holding art classes and learning about his journey. "The first lesson which was over a year ago and we did it with the whole school," Sofia said. "They were just hooked, they wanted to learn more and wanted to write; they were upset ." "The first thing they do was paint pictures of what freedom looks like to them, and the wrote letters on the back saying 'we wish you had our freedom.'" Sofia said that through Naser the students have gained an insight into the treatment of refugees in Australia with some of her grade three and four students even sending letters to
Students at The Patch Primary School with a wide variety of Naser's evocative art Peter Dutton. The exhibition is called A New Hope and represents the hope that Naser has been given by meeting the student but his artwork also features prominent imagery surrounding his wish to live in Australia "It's called a new hope and its about his journey from Afghanistan to Australia and now his life in detention, but still has that hope of calling Australia his home," Sofia said. "You can see that in his paintings as despite his struggle and the treatment that he's experienced they are all highly evocative paintings." Students have embraced the art program with many even travelling to the detention centre where Naser is held to meet him. Grade five student Finn described the detention centre as resembling a jail and added
that each time they visit, Naser is always glad to see them. "I think he feels lonely at the detention centre only because it's not a very nice place to be in," he said. "I think his painting shows his fight for freedom and when he starts painting, every bad memory and everything that's happened to him in the past he's able to put behind him." He uses paining like I guess how we have a resilience plan at school." The exhibition will feature at the Patch Primary School as part of Patchfest on 27 October and will be unveiled at the school library at 4pm. To find out more about Kindred, which was formed by a group of like-minded woman from the Dandenong Ranges you can go to http://www.kindredkindness.org/about.
Rally for Nauru Protestors called on Casey MP Tony Smith to bring families on Nauru to Australia within the month. They rallied outside his Chirnside Park office on Wednesday 24 October, Universal Children's Day. "Our purpose is to ensure that the government brings all children and their families currently on Nauru here by the 20 November," protestor Prue Licht said. The group represented The Refugee Action Collective, Grandmothers against the Detention of Refugee Children, Kindred, Rally at the Roundabout, and Amnesty international. "Children as young as five are refusing to eat and drink, becoming increasingly sick," Ms Licht said of the asylum seekers on Nauru. "A five year old girl was recently airlifted to Australia, she had not eaten or drunk for three weeks and is desperately ill. "It is not illegal to seek asylum. "Most of the people on Nauru and Manus have been found to be refugees. "They have fled dangerous and in some cases deadly situations to find safety in our country. "All the people remaining in offshore detention have been there for over five years with no immediate hope of resolution of their situation." Ms Licht said 12 men had died over the past two years through suicide, accidents, violent attacks and inadequate medical treatment. "The current and past governments have spent billions of dollars on this evil system and been responsible for the inception and ongoing maintenance of a system of cruel and inhumane treatment of thousands of people who have not committed any crime," she said.

The editor’s desk I spent my Tuesday afternoon monitoring a post on our Facebook page - in between my usual work, of course. The post was about police charging a 17-year-old Healesville boy over an alleged assault at Ringwood Railway Station. Footage from the alleged incident shocked people and left them outraged. What shocked me was the violent response to news of the arrest and charges. Comments on our Facebook post were littered with vulgar language, threats and menacing promises - some too profane to repeat. Some wrote of their relief that police had made an arrest. Many expressed concern that the teen would receive a "slap on the wrist" and urged the courts to come down hard to send a message. But the comments that concerned me were those that said the boy should be made to "suffer" and that if he did get off easy he would "be getting clapped". The worst said he should be imprisoned and subjected to sexual assault though not in those words. My problem with these comments was their violent undertones. Here people were condemning an alleged violent act, and in the same breath encouraging a violent response. It's a confusing message to be sending to impressionable youngsters - that's it's not OK to be violent in one context but in retaliation it's fine. Question the justice system, by all means, but don't stoop to violence. Casey Neill
Why should we choose? I frequently hear people like Heather Williams saying eating meat is a personal choice (Respect for choice, 23 October) so I thought I'd submit this little poem I wrote on the topic. It's claimed eating meat Is a 'personal choice' But what about those that we eat? I'm sure that they too Have a 'personal choice' Not to cruelly be turned into meat. Why is it we think That the choice is all ours, When others have so much to lose? For something as fleeting And fickle as taste, Why should it be humans who choose? Jenny Moxham, Monbulk
Commemorate, don't celebrate Carey Williams' 18 October letter, Remembrance Day Reflection, strongly resonated with me. For some time I have been increasingly disturbed by the way we have embraced our war history as defining our national identity to the exclusion of all our other achievements. And, more lately, the way that honouring those who died has changed from remembrance and quiet reflection into creating events that smack of unhealthy jingoism. Indeed, governments have seen the value of promoting what has been described as 'legislated nostalgia' and the uncritical acceptance of the disasters which wars have brought not only to Australians but to millions of other innocent people. This was most evident in the Centenary of Gallipoli and now in the forthcoming Centenary of Armistice Day. The Red Poppy Event planned in Emerald for Armistice Day seems more like a tourist event, with the area's most recognisable tourist attraction, Puffing Billy, along with other areas of Emerald, covered in thousands of knitted or crochet poppies made over many months by local women. I wonder whether they have considered that a more meaningful gesture of remembrance
and respect for those who had died would have been to put their energies and skills towards knitting clothing for the disadvantaged, the homeless and refugees. Let us reassess how best to honour with respect those who died, but at the same time take care that we do not unquestionably accept established myths over historical fact. Maria Millers, Emerald
Jenny's views are welcome As someone who has, through your letters page, taken the occasional pot-shot at Jenny Moxham (a person who I have never met, and with whose views I tend generally to disagree) I feel qualified to respond to the outrageously intemperate letter from Heather Williams (23 October). Ms Moxham is entitled to put her point of view forward (however single-mindedly). She is not trying to 'force' her lifestyle choices on anyone but, rather, draw their attention to lifestyles which may have serious implications for personal health and for the health of the planet. A more reasoned letter is that from Liz Arnold (23 October). Some time ago I decided to reduce my meat intake to three days a week (to the chagrin of my excellent local butcher) as I became aware of the world-wide problems of excessive meat-eating. I substituted with three days of fish. Sadly, a vegan friend of mine told me recently that I shouldn't even be doing that, fish being sentient creatures. You can’t win! Bill Pell, Emerald
Voiceless victims All too often we forget the difference between, respect for a person’s right to choose, and respect for that choice. Referring to Heather William’s letter (23 October), I respect her right to make her own dietary choice, but I don’t respect her choice because there is a victim as a consequence of that choice. Would we respect the choices of those who engage in racial, sexual and gender discrimination, those who perpetuate the cruel prac-

tices associated with puppy farms, or any behaviour where the recipient is harmed? In each case there is a victim, as when nonhuman animals are imprisoned, mutilated, tortured and killed to satisfy our tastebuds. This is injustice and not something I will respect. The non-human animals are voiceless victims, and Jenny Moxham (16 October) is endeavouring to give them a voice, for which I give her my heartfelt support. Margot Capuano, Monbulk
Club should be an asset Rowan Forster's article ‘Golf club tarnished’ may have surprised many people, especially new-comers to the district. Local residents have been concerned about its future for a long time, although Cardinia Shire officers seem to have ignored it. This hilly stretch of land should be a great asset to the community when open land is in short supply; local parks are over-crowded already. Future housing development around Emerald and Berwick will bring even more families looking for spots for picnics and out-of-doors fun. Football is now well-catered for and needs urgent attention. Many suggestions have been made but not heeded. Urgently-needed tracks for off-road cycling could be built, attracting clubs and individuals. If not protected and restored that fine old building will probably be burnt down by vandals or for insurance and the land sold. Beryl Bartacek, Emerald
Signal faults the problem It's not clear how Cr Mike Clarke and the Eastern Transport Coalition think that duplicating the rail line from Ferntree Gully to Belgrave would have any impact on overcrowding, congestion and service cancellations. The only things that address those concerns are an improved schedule with more trains in the network and more money spent on improving and maintaining existing infrastructure. Signal faults, not single lines, are the problem. Michael Nolan, Belgrave

Kyeema crash site By Michael Doran The 1938 Kyeema airline disaster was commemorated on 27 October at the crash site on Mount Dandenong. Around 200 people attended the memorial service, including many related to the 14 passengers and four crew killed on that day. With this year being 100 years since the end of World War I, Member for Casey, Tony Smith, spoke about the four veterans of that conflict killed in the Kyeema crash. "It is so sad that these four men, all of whom were wounded in the war, somehow survived those horrors but lost their lives in these peaceful hills." "One of these was Thomas Hardy, a leading wine industry figure and father of champion yachtsman, Sir James Hardy." "He enlisted in 1915 and by February 1916 he was in Egypt, receiving an officer commission six months later. He was wounded in 1917 but was able to re-join his unit and returned home to the family wine business at the end of the war," Mr. Smith said. Among the relatives attending were Kate Redman, great niece of passenger Lancelot Shirley and David Hawker, cousin of Charles Hawker, a leading politician of the day. Kate Redman spoke of her great uncle, who was returning from a Royal Commission hearing in Perth. "He was on the brink of a brilliant career in law," she said. "He had graduated from the University of Sydney Law School with first-class honours and had a position with leading firm, Allen, Allen and Hemsley. I am here speaking at the
Tony Smith, Kate Redman at James Merlino at the service. service not just for my family, but for all the families that can't be here today." David Hawker, former MHR, spoke about his cousin, Charles Hawker, who was a sitting member of federal parliament when killed. "Charles was a student at Cambridge in 1915 when he enlisted and in Egypt lost an eye that same year. He re-enlisted in 1917 and was wounded so badly that he was paralysed from the waist down," he said. "He somehow taught himself to walk again and was elected to the House of Representatives in 1929. He resigned from the cabinet and crossed the floor on a motion to reduce MPs salaries, which lead him to be described as a
man the whole nation could trust." "There are many people from the time who say he was destined to become Prime Minister," Mr. Hawker said. In a moving part of the ceremony, the names of each of the deceased were read out, followed by the ringing of a bell and then wreath-laying by dignitaries and relations of those killed. It is 80 years since the Kyeema ploughed into a fog-shrouded Mount Dandenong but the respect and participation shown at this memorial indicate the memories of those lost on that day will live on for many years to come.

A male driver is lucky to walk away after losing control of his car and careening through a solid stone wall along Avon Road. "I can't believe it ... a couple of inches either way and he would've been dead." "A lot of people speed along this road and come roaring down the straight - I've lived here for 30 years, and the road has become more and more popular."
Shadow Attorney General John Pesutto has taken aim at James Merlino saying he must give Monbulk voters an honest, straight forward answer on whether he has been called in by police for questioning over any role he had in the rorting of taxpayers' money. "If James Merlino is asking local people for their vote next month, he owes it to those voters to be completely open about this matter." The Ombudsman's investigation into Labor's rorting of taxpayers' money found that Labor's campaign in James Merlino rorted $21,148 to win the seat. Mr Merlino was unable to comment and a government spokesman said "As this matter is ongoing, it's not appropriate to comment."
Relief for farmers The Dandenong Ranges' community banks are chipping in $5000 for drought relief. Dandenong Ranges Community Finance Limited - the company that operates Upwey, Belgrave and Cockatoo/Gembrook Community Bank branches - donated to the Need for Feed Disaster Relief project of Lions Clubs. Group chairman John Waters announced the donation along with plans to collect toiletries for families in need at each of the company's three branches. "We are grateful to the Lions Clubs for the outstanding work that they do supporting rural families with feed for their stock and other essentials," he said. Donations will be accepted at the Community Bank branches in Upwey, Belgrave and Cockatoo until the end of December. Items such as toilet paper, toothpaste, toothbrushes, sanitary products, shampoo, conditioner, soap and shaving supplies can be donated. Only new items should be dropped off to the branches and no food items will be accepted. Graham Cockerell from the Lions Club of Pakenham, Need for Feed Drought Relief Appeal organiser, said the funds were appreciated. "Care packs and gift cards are a good way of showing those suffering that we care," he said. 12398635-RA37-18

A Liberal Nationals Government would invest $6 million for a dedicated stroke ambulance based at Monash Medical Centre. It would ensure an extra one million residents, from Seaford to Beaumaris and Narre Warren to Belgrave and Ringwood, would have access to the service for the first time. Victoria's first stroke ambulance is based at the Royal Melbourne Hospital, and is limited to attending patients within 20 kilometres. It's purpose-built, has an on-board CT scanner, telemedicine and a mobile lab, is staffed by a combination of a neurologist, nurse, radiographer and two paramedics, and is called out about six times a day. It enables treatment to start on the ambulance rather than at the hospital. Stroke affects one in six people, with 14,000 Victorians suffering a stroke last year and 3000 not surviving. Up to 1.9 million brain cells die each minute during stroke, so a faster response increases the chances of a full recovery. Stroke is the leading cause of disability in Australia.

Driver lucky to walk away from crash A male driver from Woori Yallock is lucky to walk away after losing control of his car and careening through a solid stone wall along Avon Road. Emerald Police said the male driver, who was in his early twenties was travelling along Avon Road at 1am on 24 October and failed to negotiate a bend just after Stillwells Deviation. The car careened through a solid stone wall located along the driveway of a residential address. Emerald Police described the car as having exploded upon impact and were amazed that the driver was able to walk away from the incident unharmed. Following an investigation into the cause Senior Constable Myles Gerry from emerald Police said that the crash was attributed to being distracted and eating a meal that was located on the passenger side of the car. "Following an interview we have determined that it was attributed to a distraction in the car, that being a meal in the foot well of the passenger side and also speeding," he said. The residents of the property where the car crashed said they were only alerted to the accident

Our wine winners It's the season for wine awards and the Yarra Valley is scooping the pool. Domaine Chandon's chandon brut (nonvintage) was crowned Best Australian Sparkling Wine at the Champagne and Sparkling Wine World Championships (CSWWC) in London. "It is a rarity in wine shows for a non-vintage sparkling to take a trophy," Chandon senior winemaker Dan Buckle said. "So, this is not only incredible news for us but also for people who want to drink Australian sparkling wine that is both affordable and high quality." Competition founder and judge Tom Stevenson said: "It says a lot about Chandon Australia that its entry-level wine has the corequality to beat the cream of Australia's sparkling wine and win the National Trophy." The Australian Sparkling Wine Show judges tasted 140 entries from across the country at the Black Spur Inn in Narbethong. Broken Back Wine's La Thirsty Wombat received a bronze and on points pipped some of the biggest sparkling wine producers in the country.
It'll celebrate with a picnic in the Healesville vineyard from noon on Saturday 3 November. The 2017 Willow Lake Vineyard Chardonnay from A. Rodda Wines won the Langton's James Halliday Chardonnay Challenge with 97 out of 100 points. Adrian Rodda produced the wine with grapes grown on the Upper Yarra Valley Willowlake Vineyard near Gladysdale and topped 543 other chardonnay. "This result, first and foremost, is a testament to the Willowlake Vineyard and the hard work of viticulturist Tim Wray and his crew to grow such high quality chardonnay," Mr Rodda said. At the 20th National Cool Climate Wine Show, Santolin Wines and their Cosa Nostra 2017 Pinot Noir Syrah took out the Champion Dry Red Blends and Varietals Trophy.

Have a bonsai time By Derek Schlennstedt Following on from their bonsai show in June, the Yarra Valley Bonsai Society is holding a sale day. The day helps raise awareness of Bonsai Clubs existing in the Eastern suburbs, and aims to attract new members, as well as offering a delectable range of the small and dainty trees. Yarra Valley Bonsai Club President, Geoff Pettman said that unlike the bonsai show which was 90 percent bonsai displays and 10 per cent sales, this would be the complete opposite. "We have a few nurseries involved, a lot of individuals and women who do pottery and make bonsai pots," Mr Pettman said. "It's really like a big garage sale, but then we also have a display on the side to show what's possible and the finished product." "We find that there aren't many dedicated bonsai nurseries out this way and so we get together and invite people to come and take out or hire a table, and sell their own products." "This Sale Day is an excellent opportunity to purchase some great and rare bargains to either enhance your existing collection, or to get you started in this rewarding hobby". The sale day also offers hobbyists the chance to learn more about the unique plants and to join the Society which meets in Mount Evelyn once a month. He said that while Bonsai trees are fairly easy to maintain they do require some attention to ensure they don't wilt. "It can be as much work as you want to put into and it's the sort of hobby you can do a bit on each day, but they do need to be watered fairly regularly," he said. The event is held on Sunday 18 November from 10am -1pm at the Wandin North Public Hall. Entry is $2.
Happy Halloween Halloween Starring Jamie Lee Curtis, Nick Castle and Judy Greer Rated MA15+

Halloween (2018) is an enthralling and worthy sequel to the 1978 original Halloween film. Forty years after the events of the original Halloween, escaped serial killer Michael Myers (Nick Castle) and Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis), his one survivor, are destined for a blood-soaked reunion. Halloween is expertly paced, placing equal value on slow build-up and hard-hitting gore. The film devotes much of the first act to establishing Michael's grisly legacy and the emotional toll his killing spree left on Laurie and her family. This foundation gives Michael's escape all the more foreboding weight. Director David Gordon Green orchestrates several unbearably tense sequences, employing long takes, tactical use of silence, gloomy lighting, clever planting of objects and some amusing moments (which work to bring our guard down), along with a powerful score from John Carpenter (the multi-talented director of the original Halloween). Curtis anchors the film with a nuanced, formidable performance. Laurie is now a stolid, fiercely capable figure, but displays palpable PTSD from Michael's killing spree and repressed grief over her estranged family. In her near-singleminded determination to kill Michael, Halloween ingeniously frames Laurie and Michael as counterparts: both share an urge to kill, but Laurie has retained her sanity. A compelling, excruciatingly suspenseful horror film, Halloween adds some engrossing new ideas to the classic original's formula. - Seth Lukas Hynes

Superjesus is back Twenty years on from Sumo hitting number two on the ARIA Chart, The Superjesus are back with an anniversary edition of their celebrated 1998 debut. It's set for release on 17 August and will feature bonus material sourced from triple j's Live At The Wireless archive. The Adelaide '90s alternative rock band is hitting the road to mark the milestone, and will play Mount Evelyn's York on Lilydale on Friday 9 November. The Superjesus received national radio play with their debut 1996 EP Eight Step Rail. The band was inducted into the South Australian Music Hall of Fame in 2017. Frontwoman Sarah McLeod said "everything went big time" when Sumo came out. "It was terrifying and exciting all at once. We worked so hard on that album ... " she said. "To be sitting here talking about it 20 years later, knowing that it was an important part of Australian music history and affected so many people along the way ... it feels like an incredible achievement. "We had no blueprint of how we wanted to sound - of course we had our influences, but it was the combination of those influences that made us become The Superjesus." The anniversary edition of Sumo, on CD and vinyl, will feature a studio cover of Kylie Minogue's Confide In Me. "I have always been a Kylie fan," McLeod said. "Back in '96 we recorded a really heavy version of Confide In Me, just for our own amusement. "No one ever heard it. "I went to the guys and reminded them of the recording, and went straight home to work up a demo of it.

The Superjesus. Picture: NIX CARTEL "Within a week we were playing it live on the festival stage. "In the '90s we used to tour non-stop, we would play five to six nights a week for months to years at a time. "This kind of momentum makes the band so incredibly tight - nothing else on earth can make a band better than by playing every night in front of a crowd.
"We want to embark on this tour with no fear like we did then!" Bassist Stu Rudd said the band hand't played some of the tunes that will feature on this tour in years. "It's going to be one hell of a show, playing Sumo in full, then following up with some faves as well," he said. Tickets are available from www.oztix.com. au or 1300 762 545.

SPORT
Sharks over the Magpies By Richard Millott A century from Liyan De Silva saw Johnson Park claim the points in their clash with Belgrave. Aaron Brunner (93) and Jordon King (40) led the way for the Magpies, posting 6/190. However, the story of the match was the chase down by the Sharks, with De Silva (115*) pairing with Steve Devenish (70*) to finish on 0/192 and register their second win of the year. The Basin leads proceedings on the ladder following a victory over Ferntree Gully. Dean Rundle posted 47 to lead the way, with support coming from Joel Robertson (31). With the ball, Tim Parker claimed 3/35 for the Blues to keep The Basin to 9/193. Ferntree Gully toiled hard, with Mark Teofilo notching 58. However, Blake Walter produced a restrictive effort of 3/12 from his overs to help The Basin over the line, dismissing Ferntree Gully for 162. Knox Gardens' undefeated run came to an end against Eildon Park. The Panthers posted 4/225, with several contributors including Jake Pollard (65*), Cody Morris (61) and Josh Dowling (35). The Falcons, filled with confidence from their opening campaign to date, were up to the challenge. Pete Dunlop scored 69 runs and Jarrod Butcher 32, but the side fell short at 8/201. Upwey consigned Knoxfield to their second
defeat of the season at Upwey Reserve. Knoxfield scored 8/148 in their innings, with Zac Wilson (40) and Matthew Train (31*) edging the total forward, while with the ball Kyle Snyman claimed 3/34. In reply, the Tigers ensured the points remained with them as Chris Jewell (37) and Snyman (30) were key in the total of 5/149.
Footballers find themselves up the ladder following victory against Upper Ferntree Gully. Radhik Gooneratne (49) and Ben Rawlings (45) provided starts as the Griffins finished on 9/192. The Kings toiled hard, with Dan Giblin (42) and Shane Luck (33) the notable efforts in the scorebook, however fell short to be dismissed
for 173. In Decoite Shield, Lysterfield remain on top after a win against St Johns Tecoma. Nathan Hicks provided 39 in the team effort to get to 9/169, thwarted by Aaron Grenda's 4/20. In reply, Cam Cosstick claimed 3/22 to keep the Saints to 120. Mountain Gate are on the board for the season, accounting for Rowville. The Hawks were in a great position for a big score, Darren Hill dismissed for 41 and Steve Sandhu for 59 to have the home team 2/113. From there, the Gators fought back, with skipper Luke Turner claiming 3/43 to keep Rowville to 9/172. Brad Croxford (43) and John Rozakis (38) kept the runs ticking as the visitors claimed the points in the final over. South Belgrave was too good on the day for Monbulk, with the home team's 5/196 enough. Tom Marks (69*) was the lead of South's innings in the chase. Earlier, Braden Taeuber (61) and Jason Fraser (32) posted scores for the Hawks despite the efforts of Harley McDermott (3/33). Knox Gardens claimed another tight win, this time chasing down Olinda. Set 7/161 thanks to Adrian Willoughby (39) and Tom Gelbert (38), the Falcons chased to be 6/165. Brett Morrison (39), Adam Wylde (33*) and Travis Mulder (32*) all contributing to the effort, with Pete Dean claiming 3/28 for Olinda.
Reining premier takes a ‘clinical’ win By Chris Anderson It was great to have cricket back around the Yarra Valley after wintery rain put a halt on proceedings in Round 2. Kind conditions made for great cricket as players battled it out in one-day contests. In the competition's Premier Grade, DJ Strachan Shield, the grand finalists from the previous two seasons, Mount Evelyn and Warburton-Millgrove, have given no suggestions that they will be relinquishing their positions at the top of the tree, remaining undefeated after two rounds. Reigning premier, Mount Evelyn, was clinical in their victory at home over Seville. Seville opted to bat first and was looking the goods early courtesy of a gritty innings of 45 from captain Leigh Aitkins. The opener battled hard against some tidy Mount Evelyn bowling led by captain Kane Jones. Losing Aitkins just before tea put a considerable dent in proceedings for the visitors. Still at 3/72 at drinks, Seville was poised to push on to considerable total. That wouldn't be the case as Jones (4/22), Trevor Williams (2/25) and Darcy Fraser (2/5) turned the screws on their opponents. Losing 4/13 in the middle of the innings proved a bitter pill to swallow for the Blues, and despite some dogged batting at the close, they were only able to muster a lean score of 114, having been bowled out in the 35th over. Despite losing John O'Donnell in the first over, the Mounters made short work of the chase. In-form duo Jesse Fraser (66 not out) and Jon Williams (43) again came to the fore with a masterful 111-run partnership that all but delivered the home side victory. The Seville bowlers had few answers for the pair's brilliant stroke play as the left-hand, right-hand combination proved hard to contain. Despite some late wickets to Mark Sandfort (2/20) on the stroke of stumps, Mount Evelyn romped to a seven-wicket victory with more than 17 overs to spare. Warburton-Millgrove squeaked home with the points against Yarra Junction in a low-scoring affair. The Burras opened up proceedings with the bat and found themselves in early trouble courtesy of Terry Ottrey and Nick Bark who reduced the home team to 4/40. Ben Lever (36) was joined by young star Bailey Humphrey at the wicket and the pair man26 MAIL

aged to salvage the innings with a tidy 51-run partnership. Bark, with some able support from Glenn Thompson, led Yarra Junction back into ascendency, not only breaking the crucial partnership but then securing vital wickets putting a dent in the home team's ability to build a sizeable total. Warburton-Millgrove was able to bat out its overs, but with quick wickets at the start and the end was unable to post a significant total, being caught on 9/120 after 40 overs. Understanding their less-than-ideal position, the Burras' bowlers went about rectifying the situation with brilliant execution. Recruit Stuart Thompson was the pick of the bowlers with brilliant figures of 5/23, while nothing replaces experience as he was ably supported by veteran slow bowlers, Cam Darwall (3/14) and Adam Humphrey (2/39). The unsung and unrewarded hero of the bowling performance would be Bailey Humphrey (0/18 off 10) who dried up the runs at one end, heaping the pressure on the Eagles' batting line up desperate to get some momentum to their innings. Marcel Kocher (39) did his best to keep the Eagles in the chase, but the visitors could not match the pressure applied by the bowlers and were bowled out in the 37th over for 95, handing the home team a 25-run victory. In RA Finger Trophy action, Woori Yallock outlasted Seville by 13 runs led by reigning Haag Medallist Cal Ferguson (3/31 and 23). Matt Tilney proved he's still go it with unbelievable figures of 7/2 as Gruyere put in a dominant display with both bat and ball to record an impressive 118-run victory over Warburton-Millgrove. Wandin Red and Wandin Blue made it a happy weekend at the kennel with victories over Healesville and Coldstream respectively, while Mount Evelyn recorded a tidy 32-run victory over Yarra Junction despite brilliant bowling from Harry Relf, who netted figures of 6/34. Baynes Park's new pitch got its first work out from the Fast 9s.
Hawks just fall short With the first day washout last week, Monbulk travelled to South Belgrave to play a one-dayer. Batting first, Monbulk got off to a solid start of 2/66 off 20 overs thanks to a handy partnership between Braden Taeuber (60) and TJ Utting (25). With the platform laid, some big hitting at the end of the innings by J Fraser (32) and D Maher (24) got the total up to 9/194. The Hawks couldn't get the job done with the ball, with South Belgrave chasing the total down with one over to go. S Cosstick was the pick of the bowlers with 5/22. In other games, the twos had their first win of the season, with B Martin (53) and K Storey (57) among the runs. The thirds lost a close one and the fours had a forfeit. In junior news, Baynes Park's new pitch got its first work out by the Fast 9s, the under-12s got a win at home away from home Silvan, and work is progressing well at the Monbulk High School. Record win to Monbulk On Saturday 27 October, Monbulk Bowling Club's second side played Dandenong RSL at home and had a resounding win by 63 shots, 119 to 56. Dick Coppin's rink had a day out, winning 51 shots to nine. Club statistician, Shorty Hicks, went back through the records for the past 10 years and he declared this win as the only time a Monbulk team won more than 50 shots in a game. That is an amazing feat and the team certainly deserves their best rink trophies. Lead was Eric Walsh, second was Alan Hamilton, third was Jim Anderson and skip was Dick Coppin. Eric Furby and Peter Francis' rinks both won by nine shots and Case Broekhoff's rink completed the demolition, winning by three shots. Monbulk 1 had a tough encounter with Lillydale at home. Only one shot separated the teams at the break, but Lillydale was able to gain the upper hand on three rinks to win by 18 shots, 90 to 72. Eric Markham's rink struggled all day and even though Peter Koomen bowled well, they went down by 11 shots, 14 to 25. Andrew Bells' rink led nearly all day and went down on the final bowl when they were holding game, 19 to 21. Richard Cooksons' rink led for the first 15 ends but were overhauled, losing by six shots. Brian Smith's rink was the shining light for the side, winning in a nail-biter by one shot, 22 to 21. Tuesday pennant saw Monbulk record two wins and a loss. Monbulk 1 played on a slow and unpredictable green at Eastwood Golf and was able to come away with the points by 13 shots, 59 to 46. Richard Cooksons' rink won by nine shots, Andrew Bell won by seven shots and Eric
Markhams' rink blotted the copybook, losing by three shots. Monbulk 2 won a thriller by two shots against Glen Waverley, 64 shots to 62. Going into the final end of the day, Everitt Hargreaves' rink had the weight of the whole side on their shoulders as overall the team trailed by two shots. Some excellent bowling by the first three left rink members in Eric Walsh, Lorraine
McLaren and Graeme Goller put Monbulk in an advantaged position and this was topped off by a brilliant bowl from the skip which hid the jack, which gave the team victory. Monbulk 3 struggled away from home against Mulgrave Country Club, going down on all rinks by 37 shots, 42 to 79. Both Eric Furby's and Barry Adshead's rinks lost by 10 shots and Mike Harris went down by 17 shots.
On Thursday 15 November, Night Owls bowls will start for the season at 7.30pm. The dress code is casual, and bowls can be provided. Players of all abilities are encouraged to attend. Single players or teams can be accommodated. Ring the club or Dick on 0437 952 368 to play, or sign up in the foyer.
