MORE TO LOVE The editor’s desk When I was in my twenties I lived for a time in London and rode a bicycle to work without ever an incident or near miss. When I returned I was riding a bike from Peregian Beach to Coolum one day and was knocked by a passing vehicle. Riding on the road still bothers me. Olympic triathlete Jan Frodeno believes it's just too dangerous and not worth the risk. Emma Frodeno says the antagonism toward cyclists is a mentality she doesn't understand. Barry Lloyd, 75, was hit by a van while riding last week but this week he's straight back on his bike. He hasn't let it stop him. He's braver than me. It's a contentious issue, what's the solution. ● - Margaret Maccoll

TOURISTS RE-TREE NOOSA Each Noosa Tri participant will contribute $1 toward Trees for Tourism, a new environmental sustainability program launched on Monday by Tourism Noosa. The Noosa Triathlon Multi Sport Festival, organised by IRONMAN Oceania, is the first major event to adopt the program in partnership with Tourism Noosa with Noosa Food and Wine Festival in 2019 to follow. The Trees for Tourism program will support Noosa and District Landcare's rehabilitation projects, in particular, the Noosa Trail Network Revegetation Project to revegetate areas of the trail to address issues including erosion and land slips, lack of shade for walkers, the need for greater riparian buffers and to improve habitat for wildlife. The program aims to help Noosa become a more sustainable destination helping to improve Noosa's natural assets and experiences, whilst also showcasing the
benefits of events to the community. Tourism Noosa CEO Steve McPharlin said respecting the environment and ensuring events in Noosa became more sustainable were key priorities of Tourism Noosa. IRONMAN Oceania managing director Dave Beeche said the events contributed positively to communities in many ways including economic and social but it was great to also be able to contribute in a sustainable way. We look forward to sharing the Trees for Tourism program along with some of our new green initiatives with our athletes competing at the Noosa Tri. To elevate its environmental input Tourism Noosa has partnered with Boomerang Alliance, EcoBiz, Plastic Free Noosa and Zero Emissions Noosa and introduced a new position of environment and sustainability manager and appointed Juanita Bloomfield to drive environmental initiatives.

SUNSHINE’S MILLIONAIRES "A $14,000,000 house sale in Sunshine Beach has added further weight to the immense appeal and underlying confidence in the exclusive Noosa property market" Tom Offermann Real Estate principal Tom Offermann said. The 2 Belmore Terrace beachfront house is close to the village shops and sold on the very first inspection just prior to hitting the market. "While Nic Hunter and I were still putting the finishing touches on the marketing material we invited an interstate buyer to have a preview inspection. They flew up, loved what they saw and signed an unconditional contract on the spot. It has now settled." The house is on a 1258m2 double lot with 41m ocean frontage, 5 bedrooms, 6 bathrooms, and a stunning 23m pool. The sale follows other records Tom Offermann Real Estate negotiated in
Sunshine Beach for $15.2 million and $18 million earlier this year. "And there is another sale breaking $10 million which we will be announcing soon. Mr Offerman said his company had sold 9 of Noosa's top 10 sales this year which they attribute largely to their connections with affluent clients "who recognise the unique beauty of Noosa". The company's September quarter sales volume grew 58% compared to the same quarter in 2017, and enquiry levels are showing no signs of slowing and listings remaining tight with just 3.5% of properties on the market. "Lately there has been some uncertainty amongst buyers and sellers due to reports about southern markets cooling, mainly from tightening of lending by banks. The relatively minor price falls in Sydney and Melbourne include sales from the inner city to outlying suburbs, so what relationship

does the Parramatta market have to Noosa? None, we think." Tom Offermann said. "The Sunshine coast and Noosa markets are mature regional markets driven by their own dynamics. Interstate migration is increasing at 2-3% pa. There is now major infrastructure including the new The University Hospital, many Tech Hubs, and a new airport runway opening in 2020 which will be a game changer offering direct International flights." ●
SCHOOL SEEN AS GLOBALLY CONNECTED Sunshine Beach State High School was recognised with an Excellence in Global Engagement award at the 19th annual Showcase Awards for Excellence in Schools in Brisbane last Friday. Education Minister Grace Grace said it won the award for its work inspiring students to participate in global projects and collaborate across cultures using digital technologies. The school was among 11 award winners across Queensland who demonstrated their
contribution to improving educational outcomes for students through innovative programs, leadership and education support. "The Showcase Awards are Queensland's most prestigious education awards, recognising excellence in teaching practice in our state schools, as well as celebrating and rewarding the role of our teachers and principals," Ms Grace said. Nambour Special School was also recognised with the QUT Showcase Award for Excellence in Inclusive Education for its

An extra 24 police officers from Cooroy, Pomona and Coolum have been called in for special duties for the running of the Noosa Triathlon Multisport Festival event from 31 October to 4 November. Noosa Heads senior sergeant Ben Carroll said counter-terrorist strategies would be applied to the event as they were to all major events now held in Noosa. He asked people to be mindful of road closures that would be in place during the triathlon, particularly those on the northern side of Poinciana Avenue Tewantin, suggesting those wanting to leave their houses during the event may want to park a car south of the road closures prior to its start.
NEAR DROWNING A middle-aged man needed to be rescued after he jumped off his boat on Saturday morning at the river mouth to help his two children who were in swift water. A witness said some young Brisbane tourists on another boat heard the man's wife calling for help and came to the assistance of the man and the children. The man appeared to be unconscious when he was loaded into their boat and taken to the Coast Guard at Munna Point. A Coast Guard volunteer said the man was given oxygen and taken by ambulance to hospital. ●

Emma claims gold at the Beijing Olympics.
VOICE OF EXPERIENCE BY MARGARET MACCOLL
E
mma (Snowsill) Frodeno is one of Australia's most recognized female triathletes. The pint-sized Noosa Heads dynamo is an Olympic, Commonwealth and triple World Champion and five times Noosa Tri champion. This year the 37-year-old has joined the Noosa Triathlon Multi Sport Festival team and will be calling the race from the commentary box, sharing her knowledge and insights every step of the way. Before she came across triathlons Emma (Snowsill) Frodeno was a swimmer who knew at an early age long-distance endurance races were where she was going to excel. While a school girl living on the Gold Coast Emma was in a swim club and competed in national competitions. Her first experience in the Noosa Tri was as a swimmer in a team event and the sport just hooked her immediately. "When I discovered triathlon it was new and exciting. There was just an attraction for me," she said. "It was just a spark. "The endurance part worked for me. I knew my swimming fitness carried me." While the 1500m swim was her favoured distance Emma had never run or ridden in competition. She joined the Gold Coast Tri Club and began learning how to plan training in three sports attributing her early success to coach
and mentor Jenny Alcorn. "Jenny Alcorn was vital to my development in those beginning years when I left school," she said. Emma won the Noosa Tri in 2003, 2004, 2005, 2007 and 2008. She was ITU world champion in 2003, 2005 and 2006 and won Commonwealth Games Gold in Melbourne in 2006. In the lead up to her Gold medal win at the Beijing Olympics in 2008 Emma sought the direction of Australian coach Bill Davoren. It was her full-time job. "Everthing revolved around recovery, sleeping, training. I was doing pilates to complement my training. It was seven hours a day, 3-4 sessions a day," she said. In China's capital Emma adapted her routine to swimming, riding and running around Ming Tombs reservoir on Beijing's outskirts before the big race. On her win Davoren described her as "the greatest female triathlete we're ever seen. I call her the queen," he said. But after winning the ultimate accolade in her chosen sport Emma picked up a parasite in 2009 in Korea and "got really sick". "I went from 35-40 hours a week training to sleeping 14 hours a day. I could barely make it to the couch," she said. "That really knocked me. It was like a chronic fatigue. "I was continually sick. When you're training at your best you can't afford that. I
knew it was my own body telling me I had to concede to the disease - that my health was my first priority. It was super tough. I wasn't at a point to walk away from the sport. It was so hard to come to terms with and I knew what pushing yourself means - to push through the pain. I had to release myself from being an athlete to being a normal person." It took Emma a few years to regain her health and while she still loves to exercise her goal now is just to feel good. But her involvement with triathlon continues in a variety of avenues. She really enjoys being a commentator. Last week Emma signed on as a mentor with the Australian Institute of Sport to work with young athletes in their lead up to the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. "I'll be helping young athletes to know what it takes to be an Olympic athlete - not just the physical but the mental pressure," she said. "That's what I really enjoy. "It was passed down from athletes to me. I learnt from Olympic athletes what made them what they are." As a mother to a two year old toddler and nine month old baby her children are her priority. The family live half the year in Noosa and half in Germany, providing a wonderful opportunity for the children to grow up surrounded by different cultures and languages. Emma helps run the family business that
revolves around her husband Jan Frodeno's work as a professional athlete and supports him in his training. The German athlete, a fellow Olympian, won Gold in the male triathlon at the 2008 Beijing Games and is a two-time Ironman World Champion. While cycling in Noosa earlier this year as part of his training Jan had a near miss when a truck came within centimetres of hitting him, the driver later telling him he had been aiming for him. The safety of cyclists on Australian roads is an issue Emma has been outspoken on. Back in 2002 her then boyfriend, fellow triathlete Luke Harrop was killed in a hit and run accident while training on his bike on the Gold Coast.Emma said Jan hadn't ridden on Noosa roads since his near miss and completes his training on a virtual rider indoor trainer at their home. "He could be there for five hours," she said. "It's too high a risk on the road. He just thinks it's unsafe. It's a very sad state of affairs in Australia." Emma said the attitude in Europe was completely opposite to Australia with drivers happy to wait until it is safe to pass cyclists. "In Europe it's enjoyable, it's pleasant to ride on the road," she said. "People see you as a human being on the road. Here, everyone's on high alert. It's just a mentality. It's a strange game between thinking it's funny giving people a fright and murdering someone. We struggle to get our heads around it." â—?

NEW NAMES FOR TOURISM
Increases in domestic violence, road rage, cyber-bullying, porn and plastic surgery can be attributed to a rise in narcissism according to Dr Lynette Maguire. The University of the Sunshine Coast lecturer said there was a change in core values through the generations that has caused the shift. The over 70 year olds are traditionalists raised by parents who went through world wars and depressions. They care about adhering to rules and sacrificing for the greater good, she said. The Baby Boomers started the rise to narcissism, she said. They were anti-war, distrustful of authority, part of the sexual revolution and interested in equal rights and personal gratification. Gen X were highly educated with high expectations and valued their time. Millennials are technology savvy, sheltered by their parents, confident, consumers who crave attention and are focused on the individual. "They are special and want to know their children are unique," she said. They lack boundaries with teachers, parents and police having little control. Their heroes are celebrities who they emulate through selfie taking, sharing and liking on Facebook, but that also leaves them vulnerable to cyber-bullies. Culturally people are getting meaner, lacking in

AVON CALLS FOR ZAC BY MARGARET MACCOLL
One of three brothers, Zac Usai is a happy 16-year-old who laughs a lot and likes to whistle. His rare X-chromosome-linked genetic disorder, cyclin-dependent kinase-like 5 (CDKL5) results in him having severe neuro-developmental impairment and causes him to suffer regular seizures which have prevented him from attending about half his classes this year at Nambour Special School. Zac is one in about 600 young people in the world diagnosed with the disorder which affects fewer males than females and he is only one of two people in the world his parents Melissa and Adrian know of whose gene contains a particular mosaic mutation. Zac's condition is so rare it was only diagnosed when he was 11 years old. Melissa said he'd had constant fits and stomach issues but tests including MRI scans showed nothing unusual. Like most people with CDKL5 Zac cannot walk, talk or feed himself and he is confined to a wheelchair. He has visual impairment, sleeps little - sometimes going up to three days without sleep and has had surgery for gastrointestinal problems and scoliosis. Neither Melissa or Adrian carry the mutated gene. Melissa said Zac has had surgery to insert a titanium rod down his spine to treat his scoliosis and on his stomach including the insertion of a peg through which he can receive nutrition and medication, though
Zac and Melissa Usai share a laugh. he can eat orally. "His muscles were so weak he couldn't keep meals down," she said. Fifteen years ago Melissa became an Avon lady. "It was something I could do with a family and Zac," she said and the CWA welcomed in Melissa and Zac.With Avon having left Australia Melissa still has her representative products which she plans to sell out when the Tewantin Noosa CWA hold an Avon morning on Thursday 1 November at 9.30am at the CWA Hall, Poinciana Avenue, Tewantin. There will be raffles and morning tea. Nothing will be over $10 and all proceeds will support Zac's family. â—?

YOUNG GUNS GO OFF AT TOURNAMENT IN COOROY BY RON LANE It was that time of the year when the Young Guns of the Australian Amateur Boxing Fraternity congregated in Cooroy for their annual tournament. This event has now been held in the main hall of the Noosa District State High School Tulip Street, Cooroy and hosted by the Cooroy Impact Boxing Academy for several years. There can be no doubting the support that the people of the Impact club are receiving as a total of 23 clubs from all over Australia were in attendance. Amongst these were two clubs from West Australia, Attitude and T.D.K ''This tournament," said Attitude coach Vince Pergolite, "is just great. We are starved for top competition at home. We arrived a week early and the hospitality of the Impact people has been tops; we trained at their gym and received lots of help." Another West Australian coach Frank Burns was also supportive. "We also travel to South Australia and Victoria; we love our sport and are prepared to take our kids interstate to get good competition. Our thanks to all who made us feel at home." For Pergolite it was a double header; first a successful tour then in one of the best fights of the evening his daughter Lekeisha, boxing in the 64 k division won a very close decision over Keana Welsh of the Impact club. With a reach advantage and good left jab this 16-year-old high school student, used the ring to keep her opponent at bay. But the courage and determination of Welsh gave many in the crowd the opinion that it was a split decision. Another bout of note was in the 75kg division when Luka Fiori of the Bethania club took another close points decision over Kieran Whitehead of Impact. Whiteheads aggressive style definitely made this the fight of the 34 bout card. But the highlight of the evening had to be an exhibition bout between Pomona's Reece McGrath and Spencer Pardon both of the Impact club. What made this so outstanding was that Reece at 15-years-of-age has been fighting cerebral palsy and also survived a hole in the heart surgery. Both parents Dudley and mother Vanessa agree that his strictly

His being named as the recipient of the Encouragement Trophy of the Tournament was received with a standing ovation from coaches, fellow boxers and all in attendance. Owner/head coach of the Impact Boxing Academy Mark Evans said, ''Having the ability to help young kids in need is definitely one of our greatest achievements." Also officiating was Paul Thompson supervisor of the boxing at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games. "The games were a tremendous success and the boxing division was a great promotion for the sport in general: and that flows on to tournaments like this. Well done to all involved." â—? noosatoday.com.au

THE BOLTON REPORT
SANDY BOLTON, NOOSA MP
RESPONSIBILITY - IT’S ABOUT ‘OURNESS’
Images paint a powerful message, none more than works of art that hold the intent and soul of the artist who has immersed themselves in the visual, emotional and spiritual aspects of their story. One such artist is Jandamarra Cadd. In his work titled 'Responsibility', he refers to 'ourness' as the awareness of everyone contributing to benefit all. It is a powerful and relevant message given that a lack of 'ourness' and 'responsibility' is a common denominator in many of the major issues we face in today's society. Much of all levels of Governments time, and budgets, are spent on 'fixing'. Regardless of increased health services, policing or violence intervention, managing our rubbish or our environment to accommodate, we are sadly seeing an
increase in poor health, dangerous drivers, waste and domestic violence, as examples. Seeking long term solutions has never been more important. Short term 'band aids' may make us feel better in that we are 'doing something', however they are showing to have little impact on what is needed in the world of prevention versus cure. What is the major key element in prevention? Responsibility - to self, to others and to our environment. Being accountable for our behaviours, decisions, contributions, and understanding the ramifications of these, is vital. If we can increase responsibility individually, as a community and as a society, then Governments will not need to focus on mitigating the outcomes of poor decisions by increasing legislation, laws and costs. Instead, we can utilise time,
funds and thought into current under resourced areas and proactive future needs of Queensland and its people. It often takes a 'catalyst' to effect positive change where previous efforts have failed. Such catalysts can be highly emotive and divisive, however they provide a necessary platform to have open and difficult discussions, as seen in Parliament and preceding weeks regarding the decriminalisation of termination legislation. The transference from the criminal code to the health portfolio provides the capacity to decrease terminations through increased women's services, support and knowledge, whilst addressing the contributing factors in the most important decisions of a woman's life. Whether it is in efforts to reduce
terminations, decrease violence in our communities or develop responsibility, it is up to each and every one of us to accept the role we play, including being well informed on the issues we face, and the most effective ways that we can make a difference. By accepting responsibility, we become empowered. Every day I am intensely proud of Noosa and the knowledgeable, compassionate and respectful way that you are effecting change, and that you grab every opportunity to encourage 'ourness'. Be the change you wish to see, for yourself, and for others. ● Warm regards, Sandy
OUR CHILD SAFETY LESSON Sunshine Beach State School students, staff and families wore red last Friday to show their support for the Day for Daniel. This special day was run by The Daniel Morcombe Foundation Inc. who are committed to Keeping Kids Safe. Established by parents Bruce and Denise Morcombe in 2005 after their son Daniel was abducted and murdered in December 2003 while waiting to catch a bus on the Sunshine Coast. The Foundation was established as a lasting legacy to Daniel and
now has two main aims; to educate children on how to stay safe in a physical and online environment and to support young victims of crime. Sunshine Beach was proud to be involved for the 14th year and staff support this goal by focusing on raising awareness about child safety and protection, educating children regarding their personal safety, and empowering them to Recognise, React, and Report. You can donate to The Daniel Morcombe Foundation anytime at www. danielmorcombe.com.au ●

NEWS JILL BILCOCK TALKS EDITING TO THE FILM FESTIVAL MASSES BY MARGARET MACCOLL In her work she melds images and music like a puzzle into a story and in talking about her own life award winning editor Jill Bilcock provided snippets for the audience last Friday at the Noosa International Film Festival (NIFF). In a Q&A with playwright David Williamson following the screening of a film about her life and work titled Jill Bilcock: Dancing the Invisible, Jill told how it all began as a teenager at Swinburne Technical College. "We didn't do a lot of study - just had a good time", she said. The college decided to
Jill Bilcock and David Williamson hold a film course and she joined it. Jill is credited with a long list of films including Moulin Rouge, Road to Perdition, Elizabeth, Driving Miss Daisy and The Dressmaker and has worked
with heavyweight directors including Baz Luhrmann, Sam Mendes and Fred Schepisi. When asked if editing was her chosen field she said: "I thought if I got it wrong I could always do flower arranging. There's plenty of other things to do". Her dedication to her craft is widely regarded with Jill known for going the extra distance. She recounted many hours spent re-cutting film to create the excitement of the dance when she worked with Baz Luhmann in Moulin Rouge. "It's got to come together as something emotional - that's what life is about isn't it?" she said.
"It's about rhythm, delivering the story. You have to make it fabulous, one way or another." She said Fred Schepisi always pushed her to do that bit more. David asked Jill how she found the control levels of different directors, something he had struggled with. She admitted there had been arguments."They're all different," she said. "It's always a completely new start. You have to learn about the way they see things." She said the role required a great deal of imagination and patience. ●

THEY ARE ALL CHAMPIONS I would not be wrong to suggest that most of Australia and also a lot of spectators and followers around the world watched and celebrated champion racehorse Winx winning her fourth Cox Plate on Saturday 27 October. On that same day I hope those same people also celebrated the champions of the Invictus family in their closing ceremony. They all were champions. What amazing courage and comradeship they had shown during the previous week in all aspects of their chosen sports. A shining example to all who feel they have world on their shoulders and have been given a rough deal. A week of celebration to go down in the history books of this great nation. Aussie Aussie Aussie. Oi Oi Oi. E.Wright, Sunrise Beach.
IT’S TIME TO DO BATTLE We all know that fuel pricing is a joke, so let us do something about it. When the fuel outlets give the consumer a miserly discount of a few cents for a couple of days to a week then hikes the price up again higher than before the discounted price, the consumer loses every time, so let us hit back. Everyone must engage in this scheme or it wouldn’t work. Example: For one whole calendar month all purchases of fuel and other items from say Shell are boycotted, meaning no revenue for one whole month. Guess who would start to panic! Next month the same would apply to, say, Caltex and the following month to, say, BP. Would this start a price war? If it worked, who would be the winner? The consumer of course. Remember, the independent servos should be protected. M. Piggott, Noosaville

DEVELOPMENT ISSUES

THE PRICE OF PETROL It is such a horrible privilege to be able to keep a car on the road these days thanks to the ever-increasing price of fuel and the adverse social and environmental costs car ownership has as a consequence. I was reminded of this when I went to fill up at a petrol station in Noosaville this afternoon. I was aware of a woman complaining loudly as she was filling up about the price as it clocked over with each litre drawn from the bowser. When I went inside to the shop to pay, another middle-aged lady was struggling to fix up her payment. Her credit and debit card were both declined due to insufficient funds and she had resorted to counting out coins on the countertop. The cashier announced she was $45 short. The woman began to cry. She told the cashier that she had to get to Brisbane to see her sick son. I felt terrible for
her and without a thought, handed her the cash I had ($50) from my wallet. She initially didn’t want to take it, but I insisted. She was incredibly grateful and wanted to obtain my name and number to pay me back one day. I told her not to worry. After I paid for my fuel and drove off, I started to question and wonder why the four other customers ahead of me in the line didn’t think to offer to pay. One was pretty engrossed in his phone and probably wasn’t aware as to where he was, but what about the others? Maybe they were in the same precarious financial situation as the woman? I guess they had their reasons, and we never know a person’s story or the hardships they face. I think kindness and generosity are key. I was taught from when I was a child that money (coins) are round because they are to go around. We are only ever custodians of cash, and what we decide to do with it can be pretty powerful in how it transforms lives.
The knowledge that a Peregian Beach Motel and Unit Development cost ratepayers $850,000 via court appeals reminded me of other recent development applications that have been before council. Despite seemingly serious impediments some were passed with little interference, yet other seemingly routine developments were denied or given major conditions for approval. Councillors have to utilise protocol and above all be ethical but I wonder why some consider they know more than their expert staff. I also wonder how many development applications are before the Planning ans Environment Appeal Court. If Noosa on Weyba had been approved perhaps the Noosa Biosphere’s passage through UNESCO’s 10-year review would have been aided. Similarly, approval of Coles/ Westfarmer’s Noosa Junction expansion (legal at the time) would have greatly improved Noosa Junction. I could add Noosa Civic’s expansion and ... TRIBUTE TO COAL No sniping. Australia could emulate New York’s Statue of Liberty which welcomes ships to the US shore. A gigantic statue could be erected on the cliff top at the entry to Sydney Harbour, depicting Cap’n of Australia holding aloft a lump of coal eloquently inscribed; “Don’t be afraid. It won’t hurt you”. Coal powered on-water vessels could enter the harbour; others would be turned and sent back to where they came from. Fair dinkum. Margaret Wilkie, Peregian Beach
SOCIAL SCENE 50 YEARS - AND STILL STOKED BY MARGARET MACCOLL It was amped at Thomas Surfboards on Saturday night with young and old surfers celebrating 50 years of the Noosa Boardriders Club. Club president Paul Peterson said the
anniversary event doubled as a fundraiser to keep the club of 140 juniors and 80 adults cruising along smoothly. The fun of the surf teamed with passionate kids and passionate dads have been the secret behind its five decade longevity, he said. ●

Global hospitality company, Benchmark, released its Dining Trends for 2019 and the insights from chefs and culinary experts revealed some pretty interesting shifts in how we dine out. Tea Parties are becoming more popular than ever. Consumers are thinking of tea with the same reverence as coffee and so we may see "tea bars" popping up in the new year. Tea blending, nitro teas and even tea cocktails are making headlines globally. Blood. That got your attention! "Heme" rather, is the Greek word for blood and is at the cutting edge of food science as a more sustainable meat and protein alternative. It brings a meaty food quality to wheat and potato protein burgers and chefs will be finding more ways to use heme to 'beef ' up food at a fraction of the rising cost of meat. Kombucha has been around for a while, but we will see more variety in kombucha styles coming out of eateries in 2019. Expect more kimchi, pickles, sauerkraut, tempeh and kefir as the good gut bacteria trend

METHOD Step 1 Bring a large saucepan of salted water to the boil. Add the pearl barley and cook for 20 minutes. Add the quinoa and cook for a further 15 minutes or until both barley and quinoa are tender. Drain and rinse under cold running water. Transfer to a bowl. Add the lentils and stir to combine. Step 2 Meanwhile, to make the dressing, whisk together the oil, lemon juice, pomegranate molasses, coriander and cumin in a jug. Season well. Stir in the currants and set aside to develop the flavours. Step 3 Place the walnut pieces and seed mix in a small frying pan over high heat. Cook, tossing the pan often, for 4 minutes or until toasted. Set aside to cool slightly. Step 4 Add the walnut mixture and dressing to the barley mixture. Toss to combine. Taste and season well. Add the coriander, mint and green shallot and toss to combine. Transfer to a serving platter. Sprinkle with pomegranate seeds and extra coriander and mint leaves.

Tea cafes are coming. kicks it up a notch. With a growing trend in eating the least-processed foods possible, kombucha and fermented foods are here to stay. Insects. Yes, not just a part of an intrepid travel experience any longer, insects are a cost-effective form of protein and chefs are paying attention. 80 percent of the world already consumes insects as they are low in fat, higher in protein than beef (three to four times!) and can be ground into flours for breads and pastries. Think it will catch on? Takeout instead of go out. As we can now order food online and have restaurant food home-delivered by Uber, Benchmark have predicted that the rising cost of rubbishy takeout will see diners ordering up more compelling and satisfying meals to eat at home. New flavours, such as citrus are being widely used in dishes, but soon we will see a shift to unique and eclectic relatives of the lime and lemon - citron, kumquat and shaddock. Kale will be replaced with wild weeds such as sorrel, dandelion green and amaranth. Agave and honey will be old news and replaced by derivatives of carrots, sweet potato, golden beets, butternut squash and corn. â—? noosatoday.com.au

SCANDALOUS FUN What The Butler Saw is a farcical and exciting romp into the ideals, social norms, and institutions of the 1960s. Famed British playwright Joe Orton lays out a smorgasbord of politically-incorrect taboos attacking society's hypocrisy and its established order with his delicious brand of scandalous and subversive provocation. Premiering two years after his death in 1969 it scandalised many and is today a highly contentious play hitting some very 'un-pc' subject matter. Director Tania Nash is excited to explore such issues in this overly sensitive politically correct climate. "We take everything too seriously so to laugh at extremes, is medicine for the uptight soul." There are no butlers in What the Butler Saw, just as there are no secrets. However in this farce, there is plenty of clever dialogue, sardonic epigrams, cross-dressing, incest, murder and a variety of sexual identities. The intention of farce is to explore the different aspects of human nature through comedic embellishment, humour and foul play. Orton's life was nearly as farcical as his work. He was gay, politically active and criminalised (for defacing 72 Library Books) before he was bludgeoned to death by his lover two weeks after completing his first draft of Butler. Sadly, we can only imagine what he might have produced in the years to follow. But what he did produce in his short life has shocked, outraged and amused audiences ever since. What the Butler Saw stars some of the

SPORT TODAY
ROCK UP FOR SOME SOFTBALL THRILLS Noosa has been chosen to trial a new softball program, Rock Up Softball, aimed at getting new adult players and former players on the field. Noosa Softball will work with Softball Australia to run the trial during the spring/ summer season for male and female players from 15 years of age. There are three divisions - Mixed Social, Women’s and Men’s - aiming to offer a game to players of all levels. Noosa coordinator Warren King said the program invites people to play on a casual basis so they do not have to commit to a full season or an individual team. “Our Mixed Social Game is a great opportunity to play a sport with family and friends,” Warren said. “It’s one of the rare
sports where mum, dad and teenage kids can play on the same team. “Players of all skill levels are welcome - our current players range from absolute beginners to state and national level players, and our oldest to date is 73 years. “The experienced players embrace the social focus and adjust their game to accommodate less experienced players, and are always happy to give a few tips when asked.” Teams are generally made up on the day, based on who is available. Games are all played on Saturday afternoons at the Noosa Softball grounds in Tewantin. The cost is $10 per game or $160 for the 19-week season which started on 13 October. To join visit www.noosasoftball.com.au or call 0481 350 799. ●

Clear skies and warm conditions met our junior cricketers this week. U12 Storm established control early on to secure their 3rd win this season. Storm took to the field first and had Coolum Renegades all out for 89. Kaleb and Riley took 2 wickets each. Another great team effort in the field with 2 run outs putting the Storm in a position to chase down the target. Storm reached the total with our 2 highest scorers Max and Aedan not out, and Daniel who raced to get 17 runs. U12 Lightning won the toss and elected to bowl against Coolum Renegades. A solid start from Coolum was dented with a fantastic 3 wicket over from Piyush Chamoli. Coolum kept the heat on though and, with the retiring batsman back at the crease, made a total well in excess of 100. A watchful start from TNT brought some hope, but continual wickets saw Coolum get the win. Lucas Dehn n.o. getting runs late. U13 Lightning won the toss and elected

to bowl against Maroochydore Blue. A great display of bowling and fielding, 6 dismissals from catches, meant M’dore were all out in the last over 8/83. Sam Miller with 2/12. Looking for a strong start Lightning faltered and lost some early wickets. M’dore bowled very tight and kept us all in check apart from man of the match Oliver Wilson who took it to them and nearly got us home, finishing on 33*, but Lightning just short with 77. U13 Storm won the toss and sent Maroochydore Green in to bat, who built a solid platform at 0/60. Their first wicket triggered a collapse to see them 7/85, however their retired openers returned, finishing on 7/133. Ethan Slaney was ferocious with 3/12. Being one player short Storm established a batting plan executed perfectly. Finn Mayo (31*) and Harry Caspers started well. Every batter contributed with runs, Ethan Slaney the standout (37*). Our last wicket stand saw us home, finishing on 6/145. U14 lost in a close run chase that showed plenty of character. This week was day 2 of a 2 day game. Day 1 last week - Maroochydore Red first innings 4/168, TNT batted 10 overs and were 3/20 at stumps. TNT resumed this week and lost early wickets. Then Connor Hayes, Jack Caspers and Ben Anderson steadied the innings, but we ran out of overs and finished 30 behind. In their second innings M’dore lost 6 wickets before play finished. Notable bowling by Lachlan Webster, Tom Daley and Charlie. U15’s were at home against Caboolture Snakes, this week was also day 2 of a 2 day game. Day 1 last week - TNT first innings 7/186 with Cade Holeszko 46 and Dan White 39, a 93 run 6th wicket partnership. Resuming this week TNT started well in the field with 3 early wickets, and the pressure was kept on to have the Snakes all out for 120. The catching and ground fielding was excellent, with Saif Malek taking 2 lightning reflex catches in close. Alex Keys 4/10 was rewarded for line length, with Dan White 2/6. ● noosatoday.com.au
LIFE OF BRINE
PHIL JARRATT
SURFING THE COFFEE PLUNGER About 18 months ago after a book launch in Sydney, former Tracks editor Wayne Dart shouted a very enjoyable dinner for a group that included a couple of other former Tracks editors (like your columnist), surfboard guru Simon Anderson and others. As the wine flowed and the tongues loosened, it became apparent that Darty's generosity was actually the largesse of a company called Surf Lakes, who were about to turn the first sod at a site halfway between Rockhampton and Yeppoon that was set to become Australia's first artificial wave park. Darty, who'd been hired to market the project, got very animated and excited as he launched into an explanation of the intricate technology that would create five simultaneous waves around the perimeter of a vast circular pool, moving plates and salt and pepper shakers around the table to make his points. Not being an engineer, it all went over my head, but all I really needed to know could have been distilled into just two words: plunger coffee. By the end of the dinner I think we were all getting invitations to come and surf the big plunger pot when it opened, but mine must have been lost in the mail because last weekend the plunger plunged without me. (No offence taken, wave parks all over the world have opened without my blessing, and I am still waiting patiently to bust my wave park cherry.) But jeez it looked like fun! Even for longboards, as Jason Blewitt's social media post revealed. As I write the Surf Lakes mob have only released a drip feed of images of ambassadors Mark Occhilupo and Barton Lynch and a roster of current and former pros like Joel Parkinson, Conner O'Leary, Felicity Palmateer and Beau Emerton putting the plunger waves to the test, but you get enough of an idea of the system's potential, even at a half-powered couple of feet. The boys may have been a bit over-amped - Parko was claiming it was as gnarly as Pipe - but this might have been because the test surf went down late in the afternoon, possibly after a huge Rocky rump steak washed down with beers. Anyway, it's a lot closer than LeMoore, California - particularly from our hideaway at Agnes - and I want to go there! The problem is that apparently you can't. The prototype is not being opened to the public in the near future, and will be used to tinker with the wave quality and show to potential franchisees, who will no doubt beat a path to Yeppoon.
Coffee plunger
J-Blew drapes five as the sun sets over Rocky.
But speaking, as I was, of Kelly Slater's Wave Ranch in inland California, it was difficult not to compare last weekend's Surf Lakes video release with the release of the first footage of Kelly's brainchild back in December 2015. Do you remember the steam coming out of his mouth and nostrils that frosty morning as he watched that freight train rolling down the former water ski park? And the growing elation as it produced a seemingly neverending perfect wave? It was a game-changing moment and the video rightly went viral. The Surf Lakes launch could have done with a bit of high drama like that. But I'm impressed. And ready, Darty!
champions, I sometimes find myself wishing I could return to those halcyon days before whistles and lycra. The breaks I surf in Bali are frequently over-run by gorgeous Russian and Israeli girls who have absolutely no control over a surfboard, and are not helped much by the young Balinese coaches who think it's funny to launch them into waves that are too big and too critical for them to handle. While I'm sure there are worse ways to die than being crushed by a leggy Russian princess, I generally just paddle off the peak and watch the mayhem from the channel. Noosa has its moments too. Most local surf schools sensibly focus on the softer beach breaks of Noosa West, but during the last swell event, the points were invaded by perhaps 100 high-vis schoolkids from Kawana who took over two points at once, the teacher in charge telling locals that he had a permit from Sunshine Coast Council!
SCHOOL FOR SUMMER When I learnt to surf back in the early '60s there was no such thing as a surf school, and as much as I applaud the concept that has made our sport safe and accessible for young kids and helped create so many

There were more than a few unhappy regulars in the lineup, I can tell you, so I found it amusing when this classic photo popped up in my Facebook feed the other day. It's an ancient post from the Old Sunshine Coast page, featuring surf coach Steve Borg "teaching" a class of Maroochydore surfers back in the early '80s, a goofy set-up apparently for Mike Willesee's current affairs program. Back then surf schools were a novelty, not a nightmare. ●

BETWEEN THE FLAGS
RON LANE
OUR GOLDEN OLDIE SHINES THROUGH If you ever needed proof that our Noosa lifeguards are amongst Queenslands finest all you have to do is to check the results of the recent Coolangatta Gold Endurance race. This will tell you that Sean Clancy of Noosa Heads put in an effort second to none. In doing this he covered the course of a 23k ski leg, 2.1 km run, 3.5km swim 6.1km board and another run of 7.1km; all in a time of 5 hr. 13 min 51 sec.For Clancy this was indeed an outstanding effort for at 31yrs of age he was competing in the 19/34 yr. section and was first home in his group. However this is just the start for this weekend he will be competing in his eleventh consecutive Noosa Tri. This achievement will now put him in the elite group of young athletes known as the Noosa Tri Legends; that exclusive club who have completed ten successive events. This all started in the late 1980s when he joined the U/7 Noosa Nippers. He stayed through till reaching Bronze Age and on achieving this joined the senior club. Regarding his education this was achieved first at the Sunshine Primary School then on to Mathew Flinders College. On becoming eligible he enrolled in the Queensland University, where after a 5 year study course graduated with honors in engineering as well as a degree in economics. In the background his father Brian worked in positions in both the nippers and also the senior club; his young sister Jana
Sean Clancy, right, on the podium. has completed some 16 years assisting in the Supporter club. On passing his bronze, during school and university holidays, he worked as a

lifeguard; then on completion of his studies he earned his dollars working in the mines. Now taking a break from the mines he is again on the beach. This quite achiever is
definitely a young man to be respected; someone to whom challenge is definitely a constant companion. With the Noosa Tri once again in our midst, nipper parents are reminded that there will be no nippers this Sunday on Main Beach. However those wishing to do so may travel to Peregian Beach where they will be more than welcome to participate in the Sunday activities. With the swimmers at the Noosa Tri taking to the surf the matter of water safety will again be addressed by our local surf club members. Under the supervision of veteran water safety officer Joe Cirello, Chief Water Safety Officer for the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games and World Triathlon Title, members of Coolum, Mudjimba and Noosa will again be on duty. With the number of swimmers on the increase the role of our lifesavers is vital and we thank them for their time and effort. With the future of the lifesaving movement being of the utmost importance the educating of our youth is never ending. Our school surf awareness training courses opens the door for future members: at Noosa this is in the safe hands of Greg McLaughlin Education Manager and his dedicated team of instructors. At Sunshine Coast Branch level the annual Camp Commando our training camp for junior lifesavers is again being organized. We wish them well. â—?
JACK MANGROVE
SUMMER IS ON THE WAY Plenty of anglers took advantage of the better offshore conditions and did the run to the reefs with most anglers staying fairly close. Snapper, pearl perch, parrot, cod and jewfish were all on the menu this week with the good old paternoster rig loaded with pilchards and squid doing the trick. Reports are also coming in of schools of tuna showing up. Keep an eye out for birds feeding on bait to find the schools. The closer reefs have also really performing well with Sunshine Reef giving up some nice trout, sweetlip and snapper. Fishing hard to the bottom is key if you want to tangle with a nice trout, so big ball sinker right the way down to the hook. Soft plastics have also worked well with plenty of fish taken on 5-7inch jerk shads. Make sure you use a good coating of scent for the best results. In the river: good sized whiting have been prowling around the river mouth and the frying pan during low light hours. Using live bait like worms and yabbies has produced some nice table fish, surface walkers have also been doing the job. Trevally and tailor have been feeding off the surface in the early morning and late afternoon. Woods Bays, the Noosa Sound and Munna Point and Bridge have fished well with poppers and walk the dog type lures. Fishing those drop offs near sand and mud banks has resulted in some quality flathead. Small fish baits like small pilchards, hardy heads and white bait cast up and worked over those edges has been the most productive technique. Using brightly colored soft plastics coated with 30 NOOSA TODAY

scent has also claimed some big mommas. The upper reach of the river has been producing with some nice sized mangrove jack, being ready for battle is accentual as these brutes of the river pull line like no other fish, fishing braided lines to 20lbs and leaders to 25lb will defiantly help with the fight. School jew are again back in force after the recent rains. Live baits like poddy mullet and herring have been the way to go as well as larger sized soft vibes. The tail on these vibes put out a vibration the jew pick up on their lateral line making it easier for the fish to find the lure in the murky waters. Crab numbers are also up with plenty of nice bucks taken over the last couple of week after the rains, the crabs are holding in the deeper holes near mangroves, mullet with the added scent of some tuna oil seems to be the gun bait. On the beaches: the stretch between Teewah to Double Island on Noosa's North Shore have been holding good number of tailor, morning and night and the incoming tide has been the prime bite time. Whiting, flathead, dart and the odd nice size trevally have all been taken from those same gutters. Tailor, whiting, bream have been caught along Sunshine beach and down towards Castaways with some nice close gutter in that area. On the rocks around the Noosa National Park we are seeing some nice pan sized snapper and sweetlip. Whole large pilchards on ganged hooks or local squid on a suicide hook have been perfect baits. So on behalf of Jack Mangrove, best of luck on your fishing adventures! â—?
