One Campus. Endless Opportunities. OUR Early Learning Centre, Junior School and Senior School are situated on one campus, emphasising our strength as a connected learning community and enabling many opportunities for collaboration, mentoring and role modelling. The size of Ruyton enables us to know our girls individually and support them in achieving personal best. Our strong connection with Trinity Grammar School provides unique educational opportunities for students across the two schools, particularly through our Year 11 and 12 Coordinate Programme. There is no better way to understand the spirit of Ruyton than to visit us on one of our Open Mornings, one of our School Snapshot sessions, or attend a Principal’s Conversation to experience Ruyton for yourself. Aitken College YEAR 7 is a major intake point at Aitken College and the beginning of an exciting learning journey in the secondary school. The most recent curriculum development has been in Technology; classes move through a year-long program covering Design, Digital and Food Technologies. Design Technology introduces the design process and the principles used in product design. After researching and developing a brief, students use Adobe Illustrator software tools to create their design, send it to a laser cutter to produce the finished product and finally evaluate it and selfassess. Digital Technology is truly 21st century learning and introduces students to computational thinking, coding and robotics; these skills are then applied to real-world problems. Using their iPads, students learn basic coding; they then expand and apply their skills towards complex game creation. Robotics introduces the students to design and coding in order to solve problems involving driverless cars; these skills are then applied more widely. “Our students are wellequipped to deal responsibly with the challenges provided by technology and to use it to their advantage” says Head of Digital Technology

Jayne Boon. “They are excited by coding and understand the benefits of being able to create rather than consume.” Food Technology at Aitken College has provided an exciting and tasty addition to the curriculum menu and has enabled students to bring produce from the College’s vegetable gardens and farm to the table. The Food Technology centre features fifteen modern kitchen stations, each with a wide screen television to display demonstrations from the central teacher’s bench. Year 7 students learn basic kitchen and cooking skills and apply these to the design and production of creative and nutritious breakfast options. College Principal Josie Crisara says “We believe that food technology is an important life skill - understanding where food comes from and how to use it to prepare meals that are nutritious and enjoyable to eat”. Aitken students can continue the study of Design, Digital and Food Technologies into Years 9 and 10 and beyond to VCE subjects. CAD (Computer Aided Design), 3D printing, advanced programming languages and VCE Food & Technology are all available at higher levels.

Carrum Downs Secondary College Leading the way with Award Winning Education Carrum Downs Secondary College is a vibrant community of approximately 900 students across Years 7-12. Students who enter our college are allocated to one of four Houses and remain in their House for the duration of their time at the college. This ensures that students and staff in each House build strong relationships and a connection to the college. We provide an environment of high expectations where all young people are challenged by supportive staff to achieve their personal best. Our recent investments in infrastructure are designed to support student learning and ensure our students are given every opportunity to excel as global citizens. We are currently in the process of building a second gymnasium which will further support our Physical Education facilities and our community groups. Our Middle Years program allows students to build a breadth and depth of learning and knowledge which enables them to tailor their own personal program as they transition into the senior years. The atmosphere of enjoyment of learning and a focus on creating positive relationships are central to our core programs, particularly rly through our Pastoral Care Program, which every student in the college undertakes. In 2018 we introduced ced the ased Resilience Program in partnership with the Resilience Project. This program uses an evidence based approach to build resilience in order to develop and improve the mental health of our students. We are proud to provide our students with high level pathway options which are fostered through the guidance of our Careers Team. Our staff have worked very hard to develop curricular and co-curricular programs that ensure we meet the diverse needs of our students. At Carrum Downs Secondary College, we believe that student voice is an important part of the college. We offer a strong student leadership program which sees our students in leadership positions including Community Leaders, Learning Area Leaders, Sports Captains, House Captains, Arts Captains and College Captains. We also undertake a Year 7 leadership mentoring program to support students in our college to transition into these leadership positions. At Carrum Downs Secondary College we embrace a culture of excellence for all our staff and students. A new STEM elective was implemented at Year 9 in 2018 in partnership with the DREAM Center at Chisholm TAFE. This subject attracted over half the cohort and interest is only expected to grow. In response to student demand, in 2019 all year 7 and 8 students will take a STEM subject. Further to this, the current Project Based Learning program has been adjusted to incorporate a STEM focus at each year level. Beyond integrated approaches, STEM elements are also taught in

22

Secondary Education

Maths, Science, Technology and Design subjects from 7-12 when the STEM pedagogies and practices are used intentionally. We are committed to two main goals of an integrated STEM education. Firstly, that we are able to develop STEM literacy in students. That students will understand the role of STEM disciplines, learn key concepts associated with this and be able to apply these to a given context. Secondly, to develop 21st century competencies (collaboration, communication, creativity and critical thinking). In order to support the innovative curriculum program designed to meet those goals, Dandenong High School will open its STEM centre for the start of 2019. The centre is purposefully designed for flexible and dynamic approaches to learning which will suit the requirements of STEM based teaching. Equipped with the tools for digital design, engineering, manufacturing and robotics, Dandenong High School’s new STEM centre will ensure that students are only limited by their own ambition.

GOOD NEWS LUTHERAN COLLEGE is set to embark on a bright new future with the opening of its state-of-the-art Senior Years building. The College now boasts more than 950 students as it makes its way to a capacity of 1500 by mid next decade. The new Senior Years facility superbly complements the 11-classroom, double-storey Middle Years building, the opening of which corresponded with the beginning of fourth term 2017, providing a natural progression for the transitioning teenagers at the 21-year old, P-12 College. “The Senior Years building has 18 seminar rooms and classrooms, along with four breakout spaces in the public area and a further two in the library area,” Facilities Manager Ralph Brinkmann said proudly.

“The building also includes a resource centre, computer room, IT hub, along with a VCE lounge.” An outstanding feature of the contemporary facility is the purpose-built performance space set to cater for the emerging thespians and musicians as the cultural and performing arts element of the College expands. “That will seat about 120 people or the equivalent of four classes,” Mr Brinkmann said. “Another feature is the landscaped forecourt area which is a major part of the school and will form the central spine. “It will also be the main ANZAC Day gathering spot given that it will be centred around a lone pine that has been donated to the school.”

College Musical Access to the newly-built performance space dovetailed superbly for the students engaged in the College Musical. With GNLC’s performance profile developing rapidly, students have welcomed access to the new building which will continue to encourage engagement. More than sixty Middle and Senior School students performed in the 2018 College production, ‘Lost in the Music’. The process of putting Lost in the Music together began at the thank you afternoon tea for the production team of 2017. One of the Senior School teachers, Mrs Fiona Simcoe, said that it would be great to tie a storyline for the College Musical to the new research that is investigating how music helps dementia patients. The team thought that this had possibilities and potential musical theatre numbers were brainstormed by the whole production group. The hundreds of songs were whittled down to a show list and then the research began. Under the direction of newly-appointed Bachelor of Musical Theatregraduate Callum Taylor, the story began with Wendy, a 14-year-old school student whose Grandmother, Stella, had recently been moved to a sheltered care facility because she had early onset dementia. The young girl’s Wendy’s mother did not want Wendy to have any contact with her Grandmother, as she was frightened for both her daughter and her mother. As a typical teenager, Wendy had other ideas, particularly when she learned about music as therapy in a Health lesson at school. Stella was a performer in musical theatre, a passion shared by her Granddaughter. Wendy decided to run her own research on music as therapy because she thought her Grandmother would be very receptive. Against her mother’s instructions, Wendy continually visited her rather confused Grandmother and that was where the story really took off. Catholic education: open to all ACADEMIC achievement, affordability and strong and safe school communities all point to a flourishing future for Catholic education in Victoria. Catholic Education Melbourne Executive Director Stephen Elder says the greatest compliment he has ever received was overhearing one parent tell another “If you want your child to be truly happy, then send them to a Catholic school”. “Catholic education stems from a sense of service to the community,” Mr Elder says. “We have always worked to make our schools open to as many parents who want a quality, values-based education for their children as possible - and always will. “We’re not driven by educational fads. Instead our focus is on developing independent learners and encouraging personal development; creating happy, well-adjusted students with the knowledge and life skills - plus a sense of purpose - needed in our ever more complicated world.” A pathway for life

Growing numbers of students and a steady stream of new schools point to the popularity of Catholic education. This year over 210,000 students - close to one in four Victorian school children - will enjoy a Catholic education in one of nearly 500 schools state-wide. And above the mere numbers, academic results and a steady stream of independent research underlines the difference a Catholic education makes. Catholic schools across Melbourne excel in

42

Secondary Education

literacy and numeracy - the crucial building blocks of learning - returning results well above the state average in NAPLAN tests. The 2017 VCE median study score - the best indicator of the typical level of VCE achievement in a school - show stronger outcomes for Melbourne Catholic schools, with results that now stand some 10 per cent higher than the equivalent results for Victorian government schools. Using the same measure, the proportion of high achievers in Melbourne Catholic schools is more than three times larger than the equivalent figure for government schools. University of Melbourne research on the “value add” performance of non-government education has found that Catholic schools add an average of six points to tertiary admission ranks, or ATAR scores, at the career defining end of a student’s school journey. A major Australian Bureau of Statistics survey has found that three out of four Catholic secondary school students will go on to university. And a Curtin University study shows how a Catholic education pays real-world dividends, with Australians who attended Catholic schools enjoying a wage premium of more than 10 per cent. At the same time, the Curtin University research shows Catholic school graduates enjoy greater levels of happiness and life satisfaction. A major part of this academic and personal success comes from the fact that when Catholic teachers walk into class they see individual students. Teaching and learning programs are based around diversity and dignity and designed to engage students at a social and emotional level. “The thing I like about working in the Catholic school environment is that we genuinely put the student’s wellbeing at the heart of everything we do,” Liam Buckley, a teacher St John’s Regional College, Dandenong, explains. “School for our students is not just about the learning of content, but the development of the person as a whole.”

De La Salle College AS a non-zoned Catholic boys school, De La Salle College welcomes students from all over the Melbourne metropolitan area. Proud of our academically non-selective, open enrolment policy we provide a contemporary learning community that encourages and expects personal excellence.

such as critical thinking, creativity, metacognition, problem solving, collaboration, motivation, selfefficacy and perseverance. We are committed to the design and delivery of education programs, including assessment regimes that address the development of such skills in young people.

Established in 1912, De La Salle has a rich history. From our first class of 54 students in a parish hall to now educating over 1,120 students across three campuses, we are very proud of our tradition of developing young men of character and empathy, dedicated to their school, their studies and each other.

In recent times, the College has made a number of advancements to support the delivery of a contemporary education for our young men. Facilities including the Rheims Centre for Science and Technology (opened in 2018) represent the College’s commitment to an education that requires new approaches and is responsive to the increasing global importance of STEM education. Our advanced ICT structures and a 1:1 device program allow for the exploitation of technology in all domains. De La Salle students are embracing new and exciting learning opportunities, including robotics, coding and programming which are being expanded across all year levels.

The climate at De La Salle is one of progression, development and innovation; mirroring the 21st Century imperatives we witness on the global stage. We recognise industry is increasingly requiring employees who demonstrate new skills

In 2019, the College’s new Holy Eucharist Campus will deliver our Year 9 students a program that is authentic, distinctive and allows students to lead their own learning through collaboration and inquiry.

We operate on a culture of achievement and challenge, where each student is known, and encouraged and supported to achieve his full potential. A variety of pathways and opportunities to specialise in areas of interest and expertise is a feature of our students’ experience.

Grossek’s View Grossek’s view ON REFLECTION “WITH (NAPLAN) scores improving in many testing areas our students are breaking away from the pack and leading the nation across multiple learning areas. This is further proof that the sustained investment from the Labor Government is having an impact. We’ve invested heavily to make Victoria the Education State and these results show it’s paying off. A special thanks should go to our wonderful principals, teachers and support staff who work hard each and every day to give our kids every opportunity to a great education.” – Victorian Minister for Education, James Merlino (28 August 2018) Barry locked his car, a white Toyota sedan he had bought from a friend several years ago. Like him, the car had seen better years, yet it still did its job relatively well. Now in his early sixties, Barry was about to retire. After fifteen years as a public school principal in Victoria he had had enough. What, with his blood pressure a little too high for comfort and an investigation pending on his school’s amazing transformation in NAPLAN results, Barry saw his time as better spent travelling Australia, seeing the sights before his sight gave out completely, not to mention his nerves. Today though, was for catching up with old colleagues, fellow school principals. Mates from college days. There was Madeline, always top of the class at university. She was smart. Some would say sharp. Whatever, Madeline led a great school, another public school in Victoria. Entrepreneurial, almost to a fault, her school led the way in innovation. In a State that encouraged parental choice of public schools for their children, Madeline’s school was always at capacity. Her school’s NAPLAN results never set the world on fire, but just about everything else did. That intrigued Barry, and had for years. John and Felicity would also be there today, 46

the annual get together at their favourite pub at end of term 3, just before the AFL Grand Final. They all loved their Aussie Rules and with the grand final just days away, there would be plenty of light-hearted banter to deflect discussion from their school leadership responsibilities. They would need that, thought Barry as he sauntered slowly to lounge bar. What with his Department inquiry about to commence, he certainly didn’t want too much attention focused on him this afternoon. Besides which, John was a provocateur, a stirrer of the highest calibre and Barry had no doubt that John would have him in his sights. All the more so given John’s school led the pack when it came to NAPLAN results. Luckily for John, insofar as Barry was concerned, John’s outrageous sense of humour was always a wonderful antidote to the negativity generated at these gatherings – a negativity spawned of frustration with bureaucracy and workload issues. As Barry entered the lounge, comfortable and well appointed by contemporary standards, he wondered if the lighting was faulty. Everything seemed a little hazy to him. “Barry, you old codger, we’re over here.” Glancing to his right, Barry saw them. “Ah, yes, so you are, John. How could I ever forget that voice?” “Well, I’m sure it’s not for want of trying!” replied John, his round and ruddy face beaming with delight at seeing his old mate again. Pleasantries exchanged, the familiar outpouring of gripes and grievances about their work meandered through their conversation, peppered only lightly with references to the forthcoming AFL Grand Final. Collingwood and the West Coast Eagles were not their favourite teams. It was Felicity who broke the ice eventually. Felicity was the least extroverted of the group. MacKillop College MACKILLOP College has a strong commitment to educating the whole person rather than focusing exclusively on subject specific material. In service to this commitment, we have various extra-curricular activities and opportunities available to students, including art, music, theatre, sporting activities, an extensive Outdoor Education Program, a Religious Retreat Program and an International Program. Our Vision OUR theme for 2019 is Many journeys, one community and, as we do with every annual theme, it will be woven into the curriculum to try and ground our students’ lives in the wider community, and the wider world. Our hope is that this will serve to prepare our students for a future beyond our College and might help cultivate a love of learning, from the diversity and opportunities the future holds. Internationalising THE International Program, in particular, sets out to open cultural opportunities and experiences for broader learning and understanding, outside of what is familiar to each student. It offers

students the opportunity to travel, live and study in Italy, France or Japan, with host families and cultural immersion programs at host schools. This opens the door for students to broaden their worldview and outlook on national and global experiences and issues. It also serves to expose them to different ways of learning and teaching, building a knowledge-base they can then use to play a more active role in their own future and the future of the students around them. FOR those students who are not ready or able to embark on an international journey, we have, as part of our comprehensive curriculum, an offering of French, Japanese and Italian language studies – giving students an introduction to the nuances found within language, identity and culture. We also honour Languages Week each year, which celebrates various languages and cultures found among our own students and those students staying with us from abroad. This week serves as an introduction to the eclectic range of international food, music, fashion and dance that enrich the world and, we hope, sparks a curiosity within our students to deepen that experience.

Our Learning Environments INTERNATIONAL and local students can interact with our curriculum at any year level, including completing VCE or VCAL over two or three years. Students become integrated into our educative community from their first day and become part of a dedicated homeroom and pastoral structure. This allows for a well-rounded experience for all who come through our doors. All of this is made possible by our having outstanding facilities, a dedicated ICCT centre, beautifully maintained gardens, grounds, sporting fields and recreational areas. We have a genuine respect for the environment and a keen focus on sustainability and sustainable learning. Looking to the Future ‘Celebrating all life. Challenging all people. Dreaming the new day.’ At MacKillop College we live and learn for a brighter, more educated and inclusive future. Our intent ever being to play our part in developing the whole person spiritually, socially, emotionally and academically, to enable students to become proactive and responsible global citizens. Mater Christi College SIX REASONS WHY ALL-GIRLS SCHOOLS ARE DIFFERENT Choosing a secondary school is one of the big decisions faced by parents. There are many factors to consider and visitors to Mater Christi College often ask about the advantages of an allgirls school. “We believe that girls learn differently to boys and that they are motivated and respond in different ways. Our student-centred culture celebrates those differences and thrives on the ‘can do’ energy of girls,” said Principal, Mary FitzGerald. The Alliance of Girls Schools (Australasia) has summarised some of the key research findings about single-sex education. Here are 6 reasons why an all-girls school is different: 1. Academic advantages: Girls in girls’ schools achieve significantly stronger academic results than any other group in Australia. Girls are free to pursue academic excellence and each achievement is celebrated. 2. Role models and leadership: All the leadership roles in girls’ schools are filled by girls. Younger students see these female leaders as role models and learn that girls can lead in any field. 3. Counteracting negative influences: Girls can work through the challenges of adolescence

54

Secondary Education

without fear of embarrassment or harassment. 4. A tailored curriculum: Teachers tailor their practice and curriculum for girls. In a collaborative and supportive environment, girls are free to participate in class without the teacher’s attention being dominated by boys. 5. Countless opportunities: Girls at girls' schools enjoy not only equal opportunity but every opportunity. There is no gender stereotyping with subject selection. Girls are able and encouraged to explore a career or future in any area. 6. Global citizens: Girls’ schools prepare students to be citizens of the world, using rapidly developing technology and forming connections with girls in other countries. There is an emphasis on social justice and community as girls are encouraged to make connections with others beyond the classroom. Mater Christi College is easily accessible by dedicated buses and public transport links to most Eastern and South Eastern suburbs and only 5 minutes’ walk from Belgrave Station. A visit to the College will enable your family to witness a vibrant and inclusive community where girls feel safe and build supportive lifelong friendships. The media plays a role in informing the public and keeping the powerful to account. There is a bigger picture to what we do. At its best, journalism is about shedding light on something the public doesn’t already know; exposing wrongdoing and revealing injustices that need to be told. Continued from page 46 the others, she was the best placed to raise the prickly issues and sore points between them. “How are you feeling Barry?” she asked at the precise moment that John was launching into a self-acknowledgement of his school’s outstanding NAPLAN results this year. “What do you mean?” replied Barry in an offhanded sort of way, guarded nonetheless. Sensing Barry’s defensiveness, deflected, “Oh, retirement looming.”

Felicity

“That, well I’m looking forward to it,” replied Barry, his gaze fixed upwards, at nothing in particular, and making eye contact with no one. The elephant in the room, thought Madeline. What next? She didn’t have to wait long. “Do you know, I always thought I was a better person till now,” began Barry. “NAPLAN got me.” An awkward silence followed, after which Barry cleared his throat and mumbled something about leaving his friends to enjoy the rest of their get together. With that, he put a fifty dollar note on the table to cover the cost of his drinks and more, shook John’s hand, hugged Felicity and Madeline and left, just like that. “I feel so sorry for him” ventured Madeline.” “Why?” shot back John. “He was a fool to tamper with NAPLAN results.” “That’s not proven yet,” chimed in Felicity. “Be that as it may, it’s still not a good look for our profession.” Madeline thought about that as she drove home later. High stakes testing – which is what NAPLAN is, has changed the educational landscape irrevocably. Well at 64

Secondary Education

least for the time being. Controversial and polarizing it always will be. Her thoughts drifted back to a time which seemed eons ago but in reality was barely three weeks. Madeline had just completed her school review, an exhaustive process that entailed many, many hours for many people at her school in the preceding months and would extend to the end of the year with completion of her school’s next 4-year Strategic Plan. What bothered her most was not the inclusion of NAPLAN results in the review, but the lopsided weighting of importance that the Department of Education and Training (DET) placed on NAPLAN results in the assessment of her school’s performance. NAPLAN results in literacy and numeracy were given triple the weighting in importance of everything else. Lost in her thoughts, Madeline almost missed the turn off to her home. Braking quickly, she managed to slow down just in time to take the turn safely. It rankled with her that no measures of all curriculum achievements of her students other than in English and Mathematics seemed to count for that much. Certainly not in the tabloid papers that ran prominent pieces identifying the ‘top’ schools and the ‘failing’ schools based simply on NAPLAN results. As she pulled up in her driveway, Madeline managed a wry smile. After all, important as literacy and numeracy are, the many parents of those children who attended her school, did so because of the calibre and breadth of curriculum choice and wellbeing programs, not just because of NAPLAN.

St Monica’s College, Epping ST MONICA’S College, Epping was established in 1964 as a girls’ school. This served a specific purpose at that time. In the 1970’s the Sisters of the Good Samaritan, local clergy and parishioners saw a real need for boys’ Catholic Education thus in 1978 St Monica’s College, Epping proudly became coeducational. Our school has flourished ever since. In all of our local Primary schools (Government and Catholic) coeducation is offered. In all tertiary institutions (universities and TAFES etc.) coeducation is the only way education is provided. I argue that all education is delivered at its best through coeducation. Why? There are many reasons why I contend that the coeducation choice Monican parents have made for their children is the right one. Being together throughout the day, feelings of comradeship and friendships develop in a natural way between girls and boys. This mutual feeling and uplifting experiences are inherently valuable to the fully rounded person. These friendships emerge through shared experiences in classrooms, from participating in shared activities outside the formal curriculum, and through shared membership in clubs and teams. Coeducation assists significantly in breaking down sexist attitudes in both genders. Boys and girls learn in a natural classroom environment, not sheltered away from each other, and in this normal way appropriate respect ought to develop between the genders. In the coeducational classroom, both female and male perspectives are explored, thus greater understanding between the sexes, more consideration of points of view, and increased development of individuals both intellectually and socially. Truly, coeducation reflects 100% the diversity of society. Coeducation, in other words, IS the real world. Accordingly, students are better prepared to enter the workforce, more capable of coping in post-secondary educational institutions, and more confident to involve themselves in discussions and activities with the opposite sex. Of course they are because they have mixed and grown up with the opposite sex from kindergarten years.

66

Secondary Education

Coeducation at its Best” I believe that girls are more confident to express their views on all manner of things in their daily life in a coeducational College and exactly the same applies to boys. Students feel comfortable in whom they are and the chances are many to develop healthy and positive attitudes and self-image. Let us hope that this in turn reduces harassment and bullying. Coeducation is popular throughout the world and a chief reason for this is that it allows for greater socialisation, wider diversity of experiences and fewer gender stereotypes for young people. This can only be healthy, good, and most desirable. It could be stated that collaboration between the sexes, not separation, fosters equality. In a coeducational setting, students are exposed to both male and female role models, students learn to lead the opposite sex in all types of situations, and finding a group of friends to match up with is easier. There are myths associated with coeducation just as there are with single sex education. These should all be dispelled as we come down to the one, most critical reality – humans live in a coeducational world and consequently enjoying the coeducation experience in school years should form a holistic person, confident and wise. Workshops and classes for Caregivers, Preteens, Debrief Trauma, Intuitive Care, Serious Illness/ Palliative care. www.alexandrabrownehill.com.au WALKING beside our children while they grow and experience life adventures can be exhilarating and enjoyable. Most times we all grow in many ways as a family unit. Sometimes however, it feels more like a mountainous hike with the challenges of guiding our family through schooling, educative processes and a rather tumultuous society full of expectations. We try to navigate through shift work versus school hours, wholesome meals versus fast snacks, financial burden versus missing out. Let’s face it, as much as we love our families, negotiating our life path is fast, over busy, and exhausting with an ever decreasing focus on quiet time. There is a huge BUT right there! But we need down time…and lots more of it! How will we find time to nourish our bodies, our minds and most importantly, our souls so that we can feel healthy and balanced if we do not take a reflective, peace filled time? When can we encourage our children with the much needed hope and faith that life can be wonderful and creative, with the knowledge that anything can be solved IF we don’t stop and share this information with them? Our children, our youths and our young people are propelled along at a high rate of knots, reaching burn out very early with a resultant lack of confidence and ability to connect with their own wisdom - an ancient wisdom tucked away in their highly intelligent heads and very underused. There has been no time and no guidance to show them how.

86

Secondary Education

Simultaneously, we have become a society of stressed, weary, chronically ill and frustrated adults. We try very hard to give our children experiences and technical equipment. Yet, we are too burnt out to actually connect with our kids while we concern ourselves with longer hours, paying bills, reaching ever more for a better home or car…ouch. It is all very unproductive in the long run when we begin to see the results of our children turning to the wrong “friends”, not being able to problem solve their issues or in fact even share their issues and sadly to take their frustration out on each other in a growing bullying culture.

Whether you are a parent, a child, a teen, a teacher, a carer, or anyone who cares about life matters, we all require a connection within ourselves to know who we are and to listen to our own deeper wisdom. We intuitively understand right from wrong and what we need as individuals, even more so when we are younger before society moves that skill out of our reach. At birth we are intuitively smart and just KNOW things. We all feel when something is not functioning well for us. This sense of things not sitting well within us gives us indicators that we might consider change, or be a precursor to depression if not addressed or even be old trauma that makes it difficult to stop and listen in to our own wise words. This is life and things occur for us to learn life lessons. That does not mean that we are alone. Far from it. Being a part of a supportive, loving and encouraging community has proven to reward us with wonderful creative outcomes and a sense of accomplishment with increasing healthy selfesteem. We can strive for more with compassion and hope, understanding ourselves more clearly and focusing more on ourselves as opposed to focussing on whatever the rest of the world is doing. We can discover strategies and tools for navigating our lives with more kindness, effectiveness and understanding. Collecting skills for balancing your life and creating healthy boundaries is important. Learning how to communicate with proficiency helps enormously. Using your natural given intuition and expanding it to hear your own answers clearly and compassionately is half the answer. The other half is finding time to be reflecting on your own requirements. Children do require plenty of down time in order to explore their thoughts, new ideas and get a break from society. As a registered nurse, midwife and parent, I am passionate about supporting you to discover a more compassionate, peaceful life journey which you can share with your family and friends. This can often mean healing yourself from life events, stresses, trauma or illness before you can go any further. Over the years of nursing, spiritual studies and travel to other cultures, I have packaged up practical methods of restoring ourselves back to a healthy condition emotionally, physically and

deep in our Soul. Using a blend of western medical skills, Buddhist philosophy, ancient indigenous wisdom and experience as a nurse and counsellor, I am committed to supporting anyone seeking to improve their health. I offer hard earned tools and strategies for Self- Healing with the natural and beautiful insights you can benefit from with your own intuition and guidance within a safe and supported space. All individuals, regardless of age, have something unique and wonderful to offer the world. We can do this by connecting with that ancient part of ourselves which already knows our own answers. My aim is to support you to achieve this goal. I am committed to helping you plan your physical, mental, emotional and soul needs in healthy, natural and practical ways. What I can offer you and anyone in your family is a safe space in which to step out of the world for a while and enjoy a soothing, peaceful Reiki Session. This is described by many as a massage of the soul and is used in hospitals around the world today for a sense of peace and selfconnection. Holistic Counselling, also available, is focused on your uniqueness together with processes that are adapted for your needs which allow you to develop your inner strengths and find answers that feel right for you whatever age you are. There are processes such as sand play and drawing therapy for children to enjoy and gain from. Tactics and strategies for guiding you, your students, your children and families are time honoured methods of supporting you to create a warm and loving relationship with those around you and an improved relationship with yourself. If you or your child would like to work through your stressful life events in a gentle, practical and healthy way then call me on 0409 009 924 and book your 90 minute session. Victoria University Secondary College VICTORIA University Secondary College is a coeducational state Year 7-12 college with three campuses. Our vision inspires students to ‘Create the Future’ and we offer a high quality education that provides for all students’ interests and abilities. Our college values ‘Aspire to Achieve’, ‘Strengthen the Community’ and ‘Respect Ourselves and Others’ support and guide all we do at VUSC. At VUSC we believe all students can succeed with effort and persistence. We teach our students to aim for excellence in all that they do. Our teaching and learning framework is based on a synthesis of recent educational research. Enacting this research in the classroom leads to high quality instruction that is reliably delivered throughout the school. Our evidence based teaching practices and strategies establish safe, purposeful and inclusive classroom learning environments while providing the individual behaviour and learning supports needed to achieve academic and social success for all students. Our vision is future focused and empowering. Making connections, critical thinking and learning collaboratively are recognised at VUSC as important to the development of a learning community. We value our community - at school and more broadly. Students are expected to contribute to making the community better in whatever way they can. To help them develop a global understanding, we have introduced an international education focus by creating connections with China, including a sister school relationship. Students have travelled to China each year for the last five years as part of the Victorian Young Leaders to China program. Again in 2019, another group of students will have the opportunity to study in China and visit our sister school in Jiangsu. The college is intensely proud of our Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) specialist program which supports students with independent learning skills and organisational skills. Our partnerships with Beacon, Victoria University and the Australian Business and Community Network continue to offer increasing opportunities for students including gaining scholarships and being mentored by business professionals.

It is pleasing to see that on average 99% of our students receive an offer at either university or TAFE. Our graduating students study degrees in Accounting, Biomedical Science, Law, Business/ Marketing, Engineering, Education, Science and Nursing/Midwifery to name a few. However our focus begins in Year 7. From day one, we will teach your child how to aspire and succeed. Our Music and Performing Arts program, Sports and Rugby League Academy and Debating and School Leadership programs add to the many opportunities available at VUSC. Our music and concert band program and theatre productions support talented musicians, actors and singers. Our unique TEAM 9 program combines personal development and hands-on learning experiences for our Year 9 students, developing resilience, social skills and teamwork. Our interschool sports program is comprehensive and our Rugby League Academy has seen enormous success in Victoria and currently competes in the Tier 1 Schoolboys Australia-wide competition. We are one of only two schools in Victoria to achieve this honour. We invite you to join our exciting community at Victoria University Secondary College. We undertake to give our utmost to provide our students with the skills and knowledge they need to reach their goals. Genevieve Simson Principal
