A caring funeral home of the future Dandenong is now home to one of Australia’s most innovative and high-tech funeral homes. InvoCare opened its lagship home on the Princes Highway on Tuesday 17 April, marking the completion of a six-month, $3.4 million rebuild and refurbishment. Operating under the White Lady Funerals and Le Pine Funerals brands, the facility includes two arrangement rooms, a viewing room, a relection/memorial lounge with an outdoor decked area, and a 170 seat (200 standing) non-denominational chapel - the largest capacity chapel in the South-East Melbourne area. he home also includes a state-of-the-art audio-visual system enabling families to web cast and record the service to share with family and friends interstate and overseas. Le Pine regional manager Ashley Crow said the stunning transformation was the result of in-depth customer research into the changing needs of the funeral industry. Mr Crow said research revealed families wanted a contemporary environment in which to farewell their loved ones. “Funerals have changed a lot in the last 30 to 40 years, to what is now a very celebratory and personalised event,” he said. “People are now getting quite creative in the funeral services they want. Our staf have similar skills to event planners and provide what families are requesting as well as us sharing with them the various options that are available.”

“Funerals are changing so much. We have the ability to facilitate for a service up to 200 guests or hold a more intimate gathering.”

Regional manager for White Lady Funerals Tia Worrall agreed. “It was important to create an environment in which people feel calm and relaxed. hey might come in emotionally stressed, so it is a comfort to be able to come into an environment where you can relax and have a team of people who can take you through the process.” InvoCare’s research also revealed that families wanted access to the latest technology when paying tribute to their loved ones and connecting those who were unable to farewell the deceased in person. “So if you have relatives in England for instance we can live stream to those locations via web-casting. People can log on through our website and view the service when it suits them.” he 170-seat chapel has a cathedral-like roof and is looded with natural light from a wall of glass. “he cathedral ceiling creates beautiful sound and the audio in here is amazing because of that cathedral ceiling,” Ms Worrall said. Real lowers, water features and comfortable sot furnishings add to the warmth of services. he importance of hospitality was another key inding from InvoCare’s research. “It’s important there are tears to assist the grieving process but it is also important to have laughter and celebration of a life well lived,” Mr Crow said.

opening to an outdoor deck. he lounge is serviced by a full commercial kitchen. All food is served by waiting staf. “Some families want a less formal service, they want something more like a cocktail party. he Relection Lounge gives us the option of people standing around informally,” Mr Crow said. “We have deliberately designed the space so guests are served rather than food being placed on tables,” added Ms Worrall. “We’ve held services where the family has requested that people be greeted at the door with a glass of champagne because that’s what Pop wanted. We can do that in this beautiful space.” Guests can also leave via the Relection Lounge which ofers direct access to the 55 space carpark. Mr Crow said Le Pine and White Lady had a diverse team of funeral staf across their Victorian network who are all experts in supporting families at their time of need. Mr Crow encourages people to wander in, have a look at the refurbished facility and meet the staf. “Long gone are the days when people had hesitation about walking into a funeral home. We have a wonderful team, just pop in and say hi as you would any other service in the community. “We are looking forward now to the public seeing what we have created.”

Consider a prepaid funeral for complete peace of mind PLANNING a funeral can be stressful and costly for the loved ones of the deceased. hat burden can be alleviated with a prepaid or pre-arranged funeral, which is planned and paid for by you whilst you are alive. he plan is entrusted into the care of the funeral director of your choice, to deliver upon when the time comes at no additional cost to your family. Guardian Plan, an Australian funeral plan provider, ofers prepaid funerals through multiple funeral providers including, Le Pine Funerals and White Lady Funerals. he great beneit of a prepaid funeral is that cost remains the same as the day you planned it. On average, a prepaid funeral today costs $6,000. hat cost will remain the same regardless of how long you live. For example, if you live another 27 years the cost of a funeral at that time would be estimated at $14,000. However, as your funeral has been prepaid at $6,000 that price is locked in and there is no more to pay. On the other hand, if you take out funeral insurance today and pay premiums for the same period (27 years) the cost would be $32,000. “A prepaid funeral makes it easier on your family by ensuring loved ones have a copy of your funeral plan.” said a spokesperson from Guardian Plan. Funds are safely held with the Over Fity Guardian Friendly Society, an APRA registered organisation, until they are needed.

A prepaid plan covers: •

Pair cry for help By Cam Lucadou-Wells A proposed Royal Commission into Mental Health literally can't come soon enough for Noble Park father 'Rick' and his 13-year-old son 'Michael'. The pair, who Star News has chosen not to identify, are a stark example of people falling through the cracks of the mental health system. They endure what Rick calls "Groundhog Day". Rick's son is diagnosed with severe anxiety and a borderline disorder. Over the past eight months, he has been in a tortured state. "At 3am, he wakes me up and cries," Rick says. "He screams about his family, who hardly visit him. "He thinks everyone has abandoned him, he thinks everyone hates him." The boy has self-harmed. He can't face school and strangers, finds it hard to sleep and is only comforted by video games. "If I go out for more than five minutes, he screams. "I can't go back to work in case he does something silly." Since moving back with his father, Michael has been in a revolving door between Dandenong Hospital's mental health unit and home. When out of hospital, he receives just one session a week with a community-based counsellor. There are long waits in the hospital emergency department. They are often told there are no beds in the mental health wing, Rick says. According to the most official stats, the wing's bed occupancy rate is 102 per cent. Just 18 per cent of patients are transferred from emergency to a mental health bed within eight hours.

''Rick'' with his 13-year-old son ''Michael'' wait while they endure their ''Groundhog Day''. 186974 Digital image altered In the meantime, Michael is on a twomonth waiting list for the State Government's Child First program for vulnerable children and family. Rick - on leave from work - is told by Centrelink that he must wait 45 working days to be given a carer's pension to look after his son. "That would be after Christmas," Rick

notes. It's part of the process, he's told. Rick has to manage his own bipolar depression. But he says he has to stay strong for his son. "If I fall over as a dad, he goes into foster care." The pair stay in a single bedroom at a mate's house. Rick's pleas for bigger accommodation

with housing services have gone unheeded. Out of desperation, his father rings Centrelink every day, rings the youth mental health service headspace. He has also regularly visited incumbent Premier Daniel Andrews' electorate office. Mr Andrews has pledged a mental health Royal Commission during the State Election campaign. Maggie Toko, chief executive of Victorian Mental Illness Awareness Council, says Rick's story is far from uncommon, with long waiting lists for housing and support. The VMIAC is concerned about community mental health programs shutting down due to funding being 'transistioned' to the federal NDIS. "More and more mental health consumers are falling through the cracks," Ms Toko said. "We want the NDIS to stand up and be counted for them." Ms Toko added: "The other thing is consumers aren't really listened to and they really are the experts in their own lives." Monash Health spokesperson Shane Butler said it was working to meet increasing demand for adolescent mental health services. "We are working to provide care for more patients than ever before, while ensuring that in the most urgent cases people have ready access to acute care." The most recent State Budget increased funding for mental health, including more mental health workers, intensive communitybased services and acute inpatient beds. IN BRIEF Carjacked outside pizza shop

RSL weighs appeal By Cam Lucadou-Wells A "bemused" Dandenong RSL is considering an appeal against the state gambling regulator's rejection of 11 extra poker machines at the sub-branch. The sub-branch has until 19 November to appeal to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal, president John Wells said. "We're weighing up our options." According to RSL observers, the subbranch's submission was among the best they'd seen, Mr Wells said. "They'd never seen a case so well put and with so much weight. "There was a moment of silence (amongst us) when the decision came down." A month after its decision, the Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation handed down its reasons on 22 October. The application failed the 'no net detriment test' due to a "marginal negative social impact", according to VCGLR deputy chair Deirdre O'Donnell and commissioner Dina McMillan. "The Commission is not satisfied that the social and economic impact ... will not be detrimental to the well-being of the community of the City of Greater Dandenong." It noted there were 401 gaming machines at seven venues within 2.5 kilometres of the RSL - twice the metropolitan level. The council area ranked highly in unemployment, homelessness, welfare recipients, crime and housing stress, yet was spending $965 per adult on pokies. In 2017-18, pokies in the council area reaped more than $121 million. Mr Wells said the reasons contained contradictions "heavily biased" towards Greater Dandenong Council - which vigorously opposed the plan to expand from 63 to 74 machines.

Dandenong RSL president John Wells says the sub-branch may appeal to expand its pokies Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS licence. 157527 He was surprised that more weight wasn't placed on the sub-branch's plans to fund a second welfare officer and a welfare fund. It was frustrating that the branch's charitable work outside Greater Dandenong, such as in Casey, could not be considered, Mr Wells said. The branch makes $7.66 million a year from its pokies. It expected to make an extra $868,984 from the new machines in their first year. As a result of the VCGLR refusal, the RSL's planned $2.7 million renovations, a second welfare officer and up to $50,000 for a veterans and community wellness program were on hold. Mr Wells denied that the RSL was "greedy", pointing to its subsidised meals, charity donations, support to Young Veterans, saving the Cranbourne sub-branch and loans to veterans. "How can a not-for-profit be greedy? The

word can't apply. "We don't make anything like $7 million a year. The State Government is the biggest beneficiary. "We agree that we don't want Dandenong to be a pokies mecca. "We think there's a distinct difference between the for-profit (venues) and a not-forprofit (like the RSL). "To call the RSL a hotel, it's not only inaccurate, it's a tad offensive." It was not uncommon for staff to suggest punters took a break from their gambling or voluntarily excluded themselves from the venue, he said. Dandenong RSL is the third venue to be knocked back by the VCGLR this year. The other two were Lynbrook Tavern and the Station Hotel Officer, both in the South East. Greater Dandenong Council had also successfully opposed a pokies extension for Noble Park Football Social Club last year. Councillor Matthew Kirwan said the VCGLR was becoming "risk adverse" with Greater Dandenong given its "high rate of pokie losses and disadvantage". "They seem to be adopting the precautionary principle - that is if there is a possible risk to increased gambling in such a disadvantaged demographic they look to avoid taking that risk. "This is interesting because the usual process for the commission is to be the onus on Councils to prove a net detriment." He told Star News recently that the RSL would have compromised its good work for veterans and the broader community if its bid was successful. "It doesn't make sense having great welfare services if you are funding them by means that are creating welfare problems."

Hundreds still falling under pokies spell By Cam Lucadou-Wells Pokies venues are an inviting lure for Greater Dandenong’s vulnerable, says counsellor Bic Gresty. Ms Gresty and her team at Springvale IndoChinese Mutual Assistance Association (SICMAA) have counselled 250 problem gamblers from the Vietnamese community in the past two years. Pokies are clearly the biggest problem for them, she says. Many of her clients are without work due to lacking English and job skills. They are barely surviving on Centrelink benefits - and pouring their meagre income into gaming machines. “They get bored, they get homesick so they go the pokies. You don’t need language, you don’t need any skill, you just pop money in the slot. “The pokies are a very inviting place. You

have a cheap lunch, free tea and coffee, heating and cooling - while people can’t afford that at home. “They look at the jackpot, the car they can win. At Springvale they run the music concerts and a barbecue. “They make it a friendly, inviting atmosphere.” The council area’s residents are disadvantaged across so many measures - crime, unemployment, homelessness and welfare dependency. They are least able to pay the $121 million reaped by the 950-plus poker machines in their locale. Each Greater Dandenong adult spends on average $965 a year. Then there’s the other costs - the thefts, frauds and other crimes committed by problem gamblers, Ms Gresty says. “It’s not deniable that pokies are a huge problem within Greater Dandenong.” She says it’s hard work to dampen a gam-

bling addiction, with relapses sometimes triggered by emotional turmoil or family violence or a lack of hobbies. “People come back if they don’t have anything else. They escape those issues in their lives.” SICMAA runs health forums and programs to warn the public of gambling addiction’s harms, as a prevention measure - and to encourage other pursuits. After all, prevention is better than the cure, Ms Gresty says. “In Victoria, we spend nearly $6 billion a year on gambling. Think of how we can build our communities in better ways with that money.” • Greater Dandenong Council is hosting a public forum on gambling harm with State Election candidates. It is at Dandenong Civic Centre on Wednesday, 7 November from 6.30-8.30pm.

A 20-year-old man has been carjacked at knifepoint while parked outside a Domino’s pizza store in central Dandenong. The Mt Waverley man had got into his green Mitsubishi Lancer in Langhorne Street about 11.30pm on 29 October. While the engine was running, a man has opened the driver’s side door, produced a knife and told the driver to get out of the car. After complying, the victim tried to phone police. The offender then demanded the victim’s phone. The victim escaped by foot with his phone while the robber drove away in the Lancer, with number plate PGU654. He was described as about 170 centimetres, mid 20’s, Caucasian appearance and solid build. Any information to Greater Dandenong CIU on 9767 7487 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 and crimestoppersvic.gov.au.

Bag snatched at traffic lights A 61-year-old woman has had her handbag snatched as she waited at pedestrian lights at Leonard Avenue, Noble Park. The victim felt a shove from behind, causing her to lose balance then her bag was grabbed from her shoulder about 2.30pm on 28 October. She described the robber as a male in his mid-to-late teens with tan skin and short dark hair. He got into the passenger side of a stolen Nissan Pulsar vehicle, which then drove off via Rich Street. About 4pm, two males were seen dumping the Pulsar in Alsace Street Dandenong. Some of the handbag’s contents were found inside the car. The woman’s phone and pension card remain missing. Any information to Greater Dandenong CIU on 9767 7487 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 and crimestoppersvic.com.au.

Female flees Stud Road crash A man has been seriously injured when a car crashed into a brick letter box on Stud Road, Dandenong. Police are investigating the single vehicle crash, in which the driver lost control about 10.50pm on Wednesday 31 October. The entrapped 28-year-old male driver from Dandenong was freed by emergency crews on scene. He was airlifted to hospital with serious injuries. A man in his 30s, who was the car’s front passenger, was taken to hospital by road ambulance with minor injuries. Police believe a female passenger fled the scene on foot in an unknown direction. Authorities are urging her to contact police or attend a hospital to receive treatment for any injuries she might have sustained. The investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing. Any information to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

By Andrew Cantwell and Cam Lucadou-Wells You've nominated roads in our congestion poll, you've voted and the results are close - the South Gippsland Highway is the worst congestion road in the City of Greater Dandenong. But it's by no means the only one, with the next worst congested, Heatherton Road and the Princes Highway receiving strong nominations, and Pound Road, Hallam Road and Abbotts Road receiving dishonourable mentions. The poll result is the latest weapon in our campaign to highlight the state of congested South East roads in the lead-up to the State Election on 24 November. Over the past few months we've asked you to share the frustrations of your daily commute, and to participate in the poll. Gabrielle Williams, the incumbent candidate for the seat of Dandenong, said she had a strong track record on local road projects. She listed the Abbotts Road level crossing removal, funding for the Remington Drive overpass and extension of Pound Road West in

Keysy bus a wheel promise By Cam Lucadou-Wells A new bus route servicing schools and shopping centres near Chapel Road, Keysborough has been pledged by the state Labor party. Martin Pakula, the incumbent ALP candidate for Keysborough, said the exact route would be determined in consultation with locals. It follows his government recently installing the first bus route through new housing estates in Keysborough’s south. The second route is part of a $10 million pledge for new bus services in growing suburbs and regions in Victoria. “I’ve listened carefully to Keysborough South residents and I’m pleased to deliver this second bus route to meet the community’s growing transport needs,” Mr Pakula said. “The Liberals promise big, but all they really deliver is cuts - cuts to health, cuts to education and cuts to public transport.”

THE CARPET CENTRE SUPERSTORE

Dandenong South, as well as the widening of the Monash Freeway and fixing of a dangerous right-hand turn at Robinson Street-Princes Highway. The South Gippsland Highway level crossing removal would be soon underway, she said. A funded duplication of Hallam North Road betwen Heatherton Road and James Cook Drive also included replacing the roundabout at Heatherton Road with traffic lights. " I will certainly be advocating for the priority projects identified by locals who use these roads each and every day," Ms Williams said. Afroz Ahmed, the Transport Matters Party's Dandenong candidate, said a long-term infrastructure plan for "all aspects of transportation" was required. This included efficient public transport corridors, interconnectivity betwen rail and bus services, and adjustable speed limits on freeways to minimise congestion. Mr Ahmed said a vital part was decentralising Melbourne and developing a regional fast rail network. "If we can develop a regional fast rail network that drives demand away from Melbourne ... there will be less congestion as there are less people travelling in the CBD every day." Liberal candidate Virosh Perera and Greens candidate Rhonda Garad have been contacted for comment. Write to us or let us know on Facebook and Twitter if you're satisfied with the responses you read.

Martin Pakula pledges a new bus route in Keysborough's south. Liberal candidate Darrel Taylor said the “only press release” that Mr Pakula should release is explaining why he and other MPs “under investigation for fraud and extortion will not co-operate with Victoria Police over the Red Shirts Rorts”. “It is unacceptable that the member for Keysborough believes he should not be held to the same standards and expectations as any other Victorian.“

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A man was caught speeding at nearly double the limit during weekday afternoon traffic at a known black-spot on Princes Highway, Dandenong, a court has heard. Vanja Grahovac was detected at 114km/h in the 60km/h section, driving west past a known black spot outside Dandenong High School about 1.27pm on Monday, 7 May. A nearby busy service station, a popular skate park and the high school were open at the time, police told Dandenong Magistrates' Court. Potentially Dandenong High staff and students could have been walking in the area, the court was told. Five years ago, a 14-year-old student was fatally struck by a car on the same section of highway. This prompted VicRoads to reduce the speed limit from 80 km/h. When intercepted, Grahovac did not produce a drivers license. His mother's vehicle

Dangerous, double limit - which he was driving at the time - was impounded. Police told the court that there had been no car tailing Grahovac at the time. Grahovac told the court on 29 November that he had just started driving his mother's Falcon three weeks earlier. He said that before the speeding incident, a "guy in an old white car" started yelling at him while stopped at traffic lights. He tried to overtake and drive away when he approached what he thought was an 80 km/h zone, he told the court. Magistrate Julie O'Donnell said the charge of driving at dangerous speed at 45 km/h or more over the limit carried a potential jail term. Grahovac was fined $1000 with conviction. He was disqualified from driving for 12 months and ordered to complete a safe-driving education program.

Police have issued a warning about the dangers of walking alone around the Noble Park railway station at night after a series of recent street robberies. The three robberies occurred within 500 metres of each other in consecutive nights. In the first, a 40-year-old man was mugged of his phone by two males on Memorial Drive about 1am on 24 October. The robbers were described as about 18-20 years and of Pacific Islander appearance. After the robbery, they were seen meeting with a female on Memorial Drive then walking along Heatherton Road towards the train station. About 11.20pm on 25 October, an 18-yearold Noble Park man was assaulted by a group of four males as he walked through Mills Reserve off Heartherton Road. He was later treated at Dandenong Hospital for a broken nose, a laceration under his eye and a swollen lip. His phone was stolen during the attack. One of the offenders was described as Pacific Islander appearance, solid build and wearing a black hoodie. The robbers were seen leaving and going back into the reserve.

Ten minutes later, a 26-year-old Noble Park man was approached by two males on Kelvinside Road. The assailants demanded money. One of them grabbed the victim's headphones and punched him to the face. The victim retaliated, punching his attacker's face and retrieving his headphones. The robbers were described as darkskinned and about 19-20 years old. One of them had beaded hair that was jawline length, and wore a blue jumper and jeans at the time. Detective Senior Constable Tony Lavars, of Greater Dandenong CIU, called for extra caution while out in the surrounding streets and reserves, particularly at night. "Given the escalation of similar incidents with offenders of similar descriptions, we ask people to exercise caution when walking through the Noble Park station and surrounds." A 13-year-old boy has been warned that his defence arguments were wearing thin after stealing a van in Springvale while on bail, a children's court has heard. The boy has had previous charges dismissed at a children's court due to doli incapax. That is, he was not mature enough to understand the difference between right and wrong or the nature of their offending. The boy's defence lawyer told the court that a psychiatrist was assessing the accused for doli incapax. With the boy soon to turn 14, the magistrate said: "You can't keep stretching that. He's nearly at the end of that. "Over time, it just dissipates." On his arrest on 28 October, he was charged with car theft and unlicensed driving. In opposing bail, a police informant told the hearing that the victim was pleased to get her van back. "It's her means of earning a living and she was very upset when told that the accused could be granted bail." He had been on bail for charges including

an aggravated home burglary in Narre Warren South, the children's court heard. The "very scared" residents hid in their bedrooms while the boy and his co-offender broke in about 10.20am on 27 September. The boy was equipped with a 10-centimetre knife and a box cutter, the informant told the court. He presented as a danger to the public if he was released, according to police. On three other occasions this year, the boy had committed indictable offences on bail, the court was told. In granting bail, the magistrate noted the boy's "exceptional circumstances" including support from several services, his previous doli incapax assessment, his young age and lack of prior convictions. He asked the boy: "What if you get in a car accident (in a stolen car) and have a prang and hurt them? "What are you going to say? I'm sorry? It's too late. "No one deserves to be hurt because of you." The boy was bailed on conditions including a night curfew, an intensive Youth Justice bail program and a ban on driving.

In a further step to save Maurice Kirby Velodrome, supporters are banding together to reform the Noble Park Dandenong Cycling Club. The group wish to base the club at the velodrome, which faces possible demolition by Greater Dandenong Council. The velodrome would be removed under the council's draft masterplan for Parkfield Reserve, Noble Park, making way for a sharedpath and expanded soccer fields. In a group email to Greater Dandenong councillors and officers, the proposed cycling club's spokesman Kim Nguyen declared the club would be using the facility as "our ... rightful grounds". "Our committee has unwavering intentions

Kim Nguyen rides the Maurice Kirby Velodrome. 184380 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS to reform the Noble Park-Dandenong Cycling Club, a club with over 100 years of proud history." The group seeks crowd-funding for $2000 to register and incorporate the club. It would be the first time a cycling club has been based at the facility for about a decade.

Mr Nguyen told Star News that there was room for the velodrome to "co-exist" with an updated park. The velodrome had been long neglected and under-publicised by the council. "The park needs to be rejuvenated. "I've met residents who never knew there was a velodrome and they cycle quite a lot." Ahead of a council vote that's expected this month, Greater Dandenong councillor Roz Blades invited the group to discuss the velodrome's future with her. "The issue for the council has always been will it be used. "I'm speaking to residents who say it's never been used, and now people are just starting to use it. "That's what the council has to weigh up."

Kinder program wins acclaim Dandenong Primary School is among the winners of the 2018 Victorian Early Years Awards held at the National Gallery of Victoria on Tuesday, 23 October. Its innovative three-year-old kinder program Step into Kinder won the category for supporting parents to build their capacity and confidence. It partnered with City of Greater Dandenong, The Smith Family and the R E Ross Trust. The award included $15,000 for the school to continue its innovation. Teacher Alison Rogers led much of the ground-breaking work. She said the high-quality program catered for families who couldn’t otherwise access three-year-old kindergarten due to cost and travel. It also identified children needing early interventions.

“Through establishing our school-based three-year-old kinder program, we are able to meet the needs of children and families in our community.” Principal Daniel Riley said the school was committed to early childhood learning. “Early childhood is the foundation for lifelong wellbeing and learning.” The Victorian Early Years Awards recognise the crucial work of early years professionals who make a difference in the lives of Victorian children and families. “It’s inspirational to hear about lasting impact these individuals and organisations have all had on children during the vital early years,” then-Early Childhood Education Minister Jenny Mikakos said. Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams said the Step into Kinder program had “helped change young lives for the better”.

7 November 1918 The War News from the seat of war, during the past few weeks, has been such as to indicate that the war is nearing its end, and recent cablegrams are of a most gratifying nature - in fact , peace is hourly expected to be announced. We were expecting that an announcement would be made with this week's issue, but can only hope that before another issue of the "Journal" goes to press, the glorious announcement will be made throughout the Commonwealth. Peace Signal To the Editor Sir - We are surely on the eve of a great announcement - the greatest that any of us have known in our time, and at any moment news may come through that Germany has yielded and the war is over. On receipt of such news I have arranged for the ringing of the fire bell, also churches and school bells, simultaneously. That the members of the brigade may know that it is not for a fire and the public may not be alarmed, the fire bell will first toil five distinct dongs at the intervals of fire seconds, The flag will be hoisted at the Town Hall, and our new Honour flag will also be displayed. 50 years ago 5 November 1968 He dug up a grenade A Holmes street resident was digging in his backyard last week for worms to feed to a pet magpie. He didn't find any worms, but

he did find a hand grenade. Mr John Schmidt unearthed the grenade only a few inches below the surface. The grenade was in very poor condition and badly corroded. Even the safety pin was rusted off. Mr Schmidt gingerly picked up the grenade and showed it to his wife Helga and a couple of neighbours. He decided that it would be best left alone and phoned the police. Mrs Schmidt told the Journal "My husband and I didn't like the look of it. We didn't know whether it was alive or dead. We warned the children to keep away from it and left it lying where we found it until the police came to take it away"

Sudden cracks in the walls forced the city of Greater Dandenong to close the top floor of Laurel Lodge until August 2015 according to the Dandenong and District Historical Society. The council's Arts and Cultural Development co-ordinator, Sarah Dugdale, said the closure followed an investigation to confirm the extent and significance of movement in the buildings footings. - Compiled by Dandenong & District Historical Society

FOCUS ON … DANDENONG SHOW

Eye out for a gem By Cam Lucadou-Wells As Heather Ronngard wanders through Dandenong Show's arts, crafts and foods, she will have an eye out for the unawarded 'gem'. For the past 10 years, she has awarded an 'encouragement' prize to a creation that didn't win a judge's ribbon. "I go with my heart," Ms Ronngard say. "I look for the hidden gems - the things that should have got a prize. "It's to give that bit of encouragement - to keep going." The award is fittingly in memory of her late mother Jean Isobel Orwin - an absolute stalwart volunteer in Dandenong. "She was involved in community," Ms Ronngard recalls. "Jean always encouraged people to be positive and have a go at something." Ms Orwin entered nearly every show category including ceramics, rhubarb and Christmas novelties. Just about anything but painting, her daughter says. Her honorary work included being longtime president of Dandenong Outdoor Life Saving Club. The club was based at the former swimming pool in Dandenong Park on Pultney Street. She was a regular netballer and helper at schools - "kind, thoughtful and generous - and very entertaining with her stories", Ms Ronngard said. "She was cheerful and networked to support many in the Dandenong West and central Dandenong. "She had time for everybody." The 147-year-old show's enduring presence is important to the town - once synonymous with cattle yards, farms and market gardens.

Attractions are for all Heather Ronngard, with a photo of her mother Jean Orwin, gives an annual award of encouragement. Picture: GARY SISSONS "If you think of Dandenong being a market town back when we were first living there, it was owned by five families. "We want to keep up that support and interest especially among new people integrating in the community." Ms Ronngard wants the community - especially young people - to get behind and volunteer. It's also not too late to enter your arts, crafts and foods into the show. Mention this Journal article and you'll be allowed late entry by Wednesday 7 November. Just as Ms Orwin did, have a go. The Dandenong Show is at Greaves Reserve, Bennet Street, Dandenong on 10 and 11 November. Tickets: www.ticketebo.com.au.

Jean Isobel Orwin is remembered as a generous volunteer in Dandenong.

With cut-price tickets at the gate, there’s plenty of value at the 147th Dandeong Show. Once inside, much of the packed program of attractions are free. It includes a bevy of young, local musicians, singers and dancers performing live, as well as Saturday fireworks. And the expected thrilling rides, showbags, monster trucks, farm animal displays, milking and shearing demonstrations, arts, crafts and home-made foods. Brown’s great medal win By Hayley Wildes For Neil Brown, a love of greyhound racing came naturally. After all, growing up within walking distance - albeit a long walk - from Sandown Park made attending Thursday night races a perfect pastime. Brown, the current chairman of the Sandown Greyhound Racing Club - among many other roles - has been involved with greyhound racing for 50 years and was recently awarded the Ken Carr Medal at the 2017/18 Victorian Greyhound Awards. The Ken Carr Medal - named in honour of the late Ken Carr, a legendary Victorian greyhound racing administrator - is considered the highest award for excellence within the Victorian greyhound racing industry. Completely humbled by the award, Brown reflected on his journey within the sport. "The awards are not something you even think about or look for. I've been involved since I was a teenager and it was 1968 when I started going regularly and I've dabbled into everything you possibly could in regards to the greyhounds, so I haven't left any stone unturned," he said. "I've enjoyed every aspect - from the handson training and a bit of breeding, to involvement in the media through radio and writing also... There hasn't been too much that I haven't got involved in and even got into some TV work too." Brown's love for greyhound racing began when he as lining up for football finals tickets. "I was about 16 and was waiting overnight at the MCG for football finals tickets and someone said you can have your spot saved in the queue by other people and have a couple of hours off," he said. "A friend of mine said we should go across to Olympic Park to watch the greyhounds and I sort of fell in love with it from there. "I grew up in Springvale, so it was a natural progression to go to Sandown Park which was virtually within walking distance of my home.

"We used to get in for free through a hole in the fence out the back and now I'm chairman of the club, so it's been quite a meteoric rise over a long period of time." It's fair to say Brown has repaid the club for those free entries back in the day, with his tireless work having helped drive greyhound racing at Sandown - and nationally for that matter - to great heights. Brown's work on ensuring the proud history of the sport is saved for generations to come has been tremendous. "I really took to the historic side of it and I've tried to maintain it and preserve it," he said. "I was very fascinated by the old-timers I used to meet and got friendly with - many of them had countless stories; just story after story of the different periods of greyhound racing and I had such an involvement and memory of my own, so it came naturally to take on the historic side of it." Having seen some of the very best dogs that have ever raced, there are two who stand out in Brown's mind as the best he's witnessed. "I've always maintained, up until probably the last year and a half, that Zoom Top - who raced in the late 1960s to early 1970s - was the best I'd ever seen and her records speak for that," he said. "I think Fanta Bale, who is our recent champion, is probably close to being her equal - I don't think there's much between the two of them." Having been in the industry for 50 years, is Brown considering slowing down? "I don't think so. I don't think my passion for the sport will diminish, so I'll stay involved in a few things and it keeps your mind active as you get older," he said. There's no doubt that greyhound racing is greater for Neil Brown's involvement and the Ken Carr Medal is recognition of half a century of dedicated service to the sport.

The momentum behind Team 11 continues to build As the bid to bring an A-League and W-League club to the south-east of Victoria continues to take shape, Team 11 Pty Ltd has unveiled more of the shareholders who have combined to turn this football dream into a reality. Joining major shareholder Gerry Ryan and Team 11's interim chairman Ghadir Razuki as investors are prominent south east businesses, including RMBL Investments, Intrapac Property and Pellicano Group. Also in the mix is a group of young and passionate local business owners and professionals - many from the local football scene - who have established a consortium to invest into Team 11. The group largely consists of business owners and professionals who have grown up in the region and played competitively in FFV state leagues. They are excited by the prospect of an A-League club growing the game for the younger generation in the south east, with many of their kids playing for local clubs in the region. The group is headed by Tony Selak and Peter Vlachos, who both played junior football locally, and has representation on Team 11's board through Dandenong-born Selak. This group is uniquely positioned to give guidance on grassroots matters, including but not limited to match day experience, interaction with families and local football clubs. The businesses and businessmen which have come together include: Selak (Ace Body Corporate Management); Vlachos (finance professional); Gavin Hately, Ivan Sember (Elite Shopfitting Australia); Alan Macinkovic, Ivica Klarica (Purple Hills Painting); Blazincic family (Olinda Spring Water); Simon Cai (C Loans); Steven Muretic, Tomi Muretic (Murtec Group Engineering Services); Charlie Hong (Titan Packaging); Christian Bonadio (talent and performance professional) and Carlo Salanitri (Sooshi Mango). Member of the local consortium, Peter Vlachos spoke of his excitement at the prospect of having an A-League and W-League team pracdandenong.starcommunity.com.au

Tony Selak, Colin Madden, Max Shifman, Ghadir Razuki and Renato Pellicano are thrilled to be involved with the Team 11 bid. tically right on his back door. "I grew up in the south-east and played football from a young age," he said. "I spent most of my playing days at Bentleigh Greens, but I also played at Chelsea, Clayton Inter and Sandringham. To be involved

with something like Team 11 excites me greatly. "Having travelled around Europe and seen the youth and development programs available in those countries, I've realised that we need to create greater opportunities and better pathways here in Australia. This club, if given a

licence, is our chance to grow grassroots football and create a better future for the talented kids in south-east Victoria. "The fact that I am a father of two young boys makes me even more passionate about this project."

SPORT

Bucks run riot over Hawks By Russell Bennett Buckley Ridges has continued its unbeaten start to the Dandenong District Cricket Association Turf 1 season after a clinical chase down of Hallam Kalora Park in Hallam. Batting first in the Round 3 one-dayer, the home side could only muster 8/155 from its 40 overs. Openers Ben Hillard (3) and Leigh Booth (4) both fell early and when Jaime Brohier (3) fell soon after the home side was sitting at a precarious 3/27. The task to set about rescuing the innings then fell on the shoulders of Jordan Hammond (66) and Ryan Hillard (36), who scored over 100 of their side’s runs just between the two of them. But there was only so much they could do, given their side’s shaky start. Buckley Ridges wasted absolutely no time in its reply, reaching 3/160 at the start of just the 25th over with the star opening combination of skipper David White (52) and DJ Watson (79) doing the bulk of the damage between them in their 141-run stand. Saturday marked the first dismissal of the season for South African First Class player White, 27, who has returns of 105 not out, 85 not out, and 52 in his first three hits for Buckley Ridges - all at a whopping average of 242 so far. Berwick, meanwhile, has toppled both of last season’s Turf 1 grand finalists in consecutive rounds. On Saturday the Bears proved too strong for Mordialloc at Ben Kavanagh Reserve. Batting first, the visitors reached a strong 7/214 from their 40 overs thanks to each of their top six batsman passing at least 20 - led by skipper Matt Chasemore with 57. After losing opener Brendan Morris without scoring early in its reply, Mordialloc ultimately reached 8/187 from its 40 overs - led by

Damith Mapa Ralalage with 39. Isaiah Jassal was the pick of the Berwick attack, finishing with 3/27 from his eight overs. Mordialloc is now winless through its opening three games of the season. In other DDCA Turf 1 fixtures across the weekend, Springvale South (7/178) was too strong for St Mary’s (163) at Thomas Carroll

Reserve, and Heinz Southern Districts (6/209) had the better of North Dandenong (9/194) in a high-scoring clash at Lois Twohig Reserve. HSD star Michael Davis was again simply sensational with both bat and ball, top-scoring with an unbeaten 90 before claiming 4/29 from his eight overs. In Victorian Premier Cricket action at Shep-

ley Oval on Saturday, Dandenong made a brilliant start to the first day of their clash with the Monash Tigers. Winning the toss and batting, the Panthers amassed 8/275 - thanks largely to a 124-run opening stand between club champions skipper Tom Donnell (65) and Brett Forsyth (125 not out). Forsyth is now averaging over 70 so far this season with 352 runs to his name already in just six innings.

The Dandenong Rangers took on the Melbourne Boomers at Dandenong Stadium on Saturday afternoon in what is one of the best rivalries in the WNBL. Unfortunately, this time around the game didn’t live up to the hype as Melbourne’s staunch defence stopped Dandenong in its tracks, which also led to easy buckets for the Boomers on the other end. Boomer Steph Talbot got scoring underway with a triple and it was a sign of things to come as she dominated the game. Star Rangers guard, Bec Cole (7 points) kept the scoreboard ticking over in the first quarter as Dandenong took it right up to Melbourne. And at the first break, Melbourne held a slender two-point lead, 24-22. Despite taking the lead after one minute of play in the second quarter, the Rangers were unable to stop Talbot as she drained consecu-

tive triples. It set her team alight as the Boomers would go on to dominate the second half of the quarter. Double-digit scoring from Talbot and three triples from Jenna O’Hea in the second quarter saw the Boomers head into half time with a 5845 lead, courtesy of a 34-23 second term. After allowing 34 points in the second quarter, the Rangers’ defence picked up considerably in the third. It was a much-improved effort on the defensive end, but unfortunately, they couldn’t reap the rewards on the other end of the court. It was just a nine-point game with one minute to play in the third quarter, but the Boomers went on a 6-0 run to end the quarter and take the puff out of the Rangers’ comeback attempt. With one quarter to play, the Boomers held a 75-60 lead. The fourth quarter was one-way traffic as the Boomers ran away with a comprehensive

win, 101-75. After a disappointing second half fade-out against the Lynx last week, the Rangers once again struggled mightily in the second half scoring just 30 points in the final two quarters. Bec Cole (19 points, 3 rebounds and 3 assists), Rach Jarry (18 points and 5 rebounds) and Betnijah Laney (10 points, 8 assists and 4 rebounds) were strong performers for the Rangers, but it simply wasn’t enough. Melbourne’s Steph Talbot (27 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists) was in incredible form, while Lindsay Allen (18 points, 5 assists and 3 rebounds) was impressive, as was Maddie Garrick (18 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists) before she exited the game with an arm injury in the fourth quarter. The Rangers will look to bounce back against Adelaide on the road on Saturday evening.

GROW BUSINESS … Casey Cardinia Region

25 new jobs available With assistance from the State Government, Montague, an Australian fresh produce company, will establish a new state-of-the-art packing and export distribution centre in Narre Warren North, creating 25 new local jobs. The $26 million project has been made possible with assistance from the governments Food Source Victoria program. The 18,000 sqm facility will provide end-toend export logistics services. Construction of the facility is expected to commence in early 2019 with completion anticipated by late 2020. "Montague is a proud Victorian brand and the Victorian Government is backing its $26 million project to meet growing demand from export markets," member for Narre Warren North Luke Donnellan said. "This project will create 25 jobs in Narre Warren North and deliver economic benefits

to growers right across regional Victoria." Montague is a family owned business and a major Australian grower, wholesaler and exporter of apples, pears and stone fruit. "The introduction of the new production and distribution facility will introduce Australian first packing and storage technologies for the fruit packing industry," Montague business development general manager Rowan Little said. "We are thrilled to have support from the Food Source Victoria program, our network of growers and distributor partners." The Narre Warren North facility will provide the production and distribution infrastructure required to significantly increase the Montague Group's export capabilities. The export distribution centre will manage export logistics services including packing, palletising, pre-cooling, inspections, docu-

mentation, container loading and freight forwarding. Montague and its grower network have planted approximately 1.5 million fruit trees to meet export demand from Asia, representing a 16 per cent increase in the total stock of fruit trees in Victoria. This project will allow Montague to double its packing capacity and dramatically increase its annual export sales, bringing economic benefits back to its growers in regional Victoria. The establishment of the export distribution centre is supported by regional fruit growers and packers along the agri-food supply chain, who will work together to build stronger agri-food businesses. The government's Food Source Victoria program supports producers and businesses working in partnership to develop products

that take the state's superb produce to the next level, creating new jobs and growing exports. "Montague are proud to announce the first of a three stage development of a state of the art production and distribution facility in Narre Warren North, Victoria," Montague supply chain manager Andrew Montague said. "The development will provide benefits for local and regional growers throughout Victoria, creating an additional 25 permanent jobs locally. An outcome we are very proud of." Montague leads a value chain alliance with 45 apple and stone fruit growers located across Gippsland, Goulburn Valley, Harcourt, Mornington Peninsula, Swan Hill and Yarra Valley who will supply the export distribution centre. The project will create 13 regional jobs within Montague's key partner growers, delivering broad economic benefits to regional communities.

The door is open at SJD - it’s our business of the year By Narelle Coulter SJD Homes is the Casey Cardinia Business of the Year. SJD director Simon Dunstan accepted the award on behalf of his team at a gala dinner at the Cardinia Cultural Centre on Friday 26 October. In his acceptance speech Mr Dunstan said the doors of his Officer business were open to other business owners in the area wanting to collaborate and share what they had learnt through the awards process. Mr Dunstan said he started SJD Homes 10 years ago searching for a better work life balance. “I was working seven days a week and I wanted to spend more time with my children. The kids are now part of the company which has become like an extended family,“ Mr Dunstan said. “We put people first and that has come back to us in spades.“ Mr Dunstan said SJD had grown significantly in recent years and 85 per cent of the revenue generated by the company was spent in the local area. “We are proud to live and work in the area.“ He said SJD liked to give back on “many different levels“ and was building two houses for the homeless, the first in Ashwood and the second in the Casey Cardinia Region. “This is a really big deal for us. There are so many brilliant businesses out there, we didn’t think we’d win. “I open my door to anyone in the room so see what we do. We can benefit each other and grow the region.“ Host for the evening, Channel 9 weather presenter Lavinia Nixon, said the judges had a difficult time deciding on the Business of the Year with three firms in the running for the top accolade - SJD Homes, Waverley Industries and Davey Marine. This year’s awards attracted 84 applicants across 10 categories. During the evening Ms Nixon spoke to 2017 Business of the Year winner Greg Plant, director of Powerplant Project Services. Mr Plant spoke of the boost winning the award gave his business, which had 50 employees this time last year but has now grown to employ 85. After winning the award last year, Mr Plant drove to Big W, filled his car with balloons and “floated into work“. “We thought we had a pretty good business, but it was really satisfying to know that someone else thought the same thing,“ Mr Plant said. “Staff really appreciated the recognition. Winning the award took the business up a step. It gave us a new view of what was possible. “(Since then) we have really developed at all

its values of people, performance and pride. He encouraged other business owners to follow their dreams. “If you’ve got an idea, back yourself and work hard. You can do anything.“
