THUMBS DOWN: A group of Ocean Grovers are not happy with council's proposed changes to the Lake Avenue Reserve playground. 187020

What about us? By Justin Flynn A group of locals have been left baffled that Ocean Grove the town concerned fuming that the town doesn't have adequate playground and park facilities. Council has committed to upgrade the playground facilities at Lake Avenue Reserve, but the group says it doesn't go far enough. The reserve lacks toilet facilities and shade Rachael Punchard told the Voice. "We have to go Barwon Heads for a decent playground," she said. "And if we do come here, the kids have either go to the toilet in the bushes or we have to load them into the car again and take them home so they can go."

Ms Punchard said the council upgrade of the playground at Lake Ave was insufficient, was uninspiring for children and was "like for like". "There's so much space here, it's so beautiful, but there's nothing here to spark the kids' imaginations," she said. "The equipment is being replaced with something exactly the same. "Kids are playing in the bushes. They need tunnels and cubbyhouses and places to hide." Ms Punchard said she would prefer to see natural materials used in the upgrade and sand Sali Williams said the lack of shade at the playground often mean that even on a 21 degree

day, the equipment becomes too hot to use. She often takes her children to Barwon Heads' pirate park or foreshore park, where there are toilets and sun protection. "There's no point having a barbecue here because there are no toilets and no shade," she said. City of Greater Geelong acting community life director Robyn Stevens said there were no plans to install a toilet block at Lake Avenue Reserve, but said additional trees will be planted in the area to offer shade, particularly around seating. "Lake Avenue Reserve is receiving a $100,000 playground upgrade. Brand new additions to the playground include a flying fox

and all-ability access to the nest swing. Equipment being replaced includes slides, agility equipment and a play shop," Ms Stevens said. "The City manages approximately 300 playgrounds, and allocations are made to each facility based on whether they are designated as a local, district, sub-regional or regional park. This ensures consistency for families across the Greater Geelong region." Ms Stevens eased fears that the current basketball ring would be removed. "The basketball space will be upgraded with plexipave surface and new line marking," she said. Ms Stevens said Kingston Park has been identified as a sub-regional play space, and is set to receive a $350,000 upgrade in the coming months.

More than 50kg of rubbish was collected from Ocean Grove's beaches by Coastcare volunteers. Ocean Grove Coastcare's clean-up day resulted in 52kg of rubbish being cleaned from the main beach and carpark between 16W and 14W. More than 20kg was attributed to glass beer and pre-mix alcohol, wine and spirit bottles. Bricks, tiles and timber made up another 10kg, and the remainder came from a mix of cans, plastic drink bottles, broken glass and an array of intact and broken down plastic packaging, together with some clothing. The most prolific item was cigarette butts, with 786 being collected, followed by soft plastic from shopping bags, dog poo bags, confec-

tionary and other wrappings. Single-use drink containers and lids - glass, aluminium or plastic - were also prolific. At a similar event in April 2017 a higher count of all items was made, however Coastcare said while it looked pleasing that less rubbish was collected, part of the area has been inaccessible to the public for some months due to building works around the surf club. This may account for the difference, along with having 10 fewer volunteers to undertake collecting, said Coastcare. The information collected will be provided to the Tangaroa Blue Marine Debris database, where it will contribute to an understanding of where litter comes from that is harmful to the marine environment.

Ocean Grove Rotary Club held its 20th annual Graham Bath Awards at Ocean Grove Bowling Club recently. The awards were originally instigated in 1997 at Bairnsdale Rotary Club with the purpose of involving young people in a direct and positive way to use their abilities and skills to benefit both themselves and their community. Ocean Grove Rotary has been promoting these awards since inception and named them after the member who brought them to Ocean Grove, Graham Bath. The three Ocean Grove primary schools, Our Lady Star of the Sea, Surfside and Ocean Grove, support the project. More than 48 Year 6 students participated in a range of activities including community service, physical recreation, skills development and social experiences. Students were required to commit for at least two terms with three of the activities requiring a minimum of one hour per week over a 10-week period. All students were then required to do a presentation to their respective schools and from there a number of students were selected to represent their school and present to the Ocean Grove Rotary club to receive their awards.

Last ditch pitch for votes Bellarine candidates for the upcoming state election will get their chance to speak to the community at an Ocean Grove Community Association forum on 14 November. Candidates have been invited to speak on four key issues that were identified by OGCA during a recent survey. The four key issues are: development and growth; road maintenance and safety; health, education, culture and community connectivity; and 'other', which includes concerns over Geelong train station.

Development and growth was addressed as a key issue in OGCA's research, particularly control of planning on the Bellarine, Grubb Rd and Tuckfield St upgrade, a fourth primary school site, overcrowding of Bellarine Aquatic and Sports Centre and Bellarine link to the Geelong Rind Rd. Road maintenance issues will include: Orton St/Presidents Ave intersection; Grubb Rd/ Adco Grove intersection; and The Parade/ Hodgson St intersection. Ocean Grove Principal Pedestrian Network

(OGPPN) will be a key issue when candidates speak about health, education, culture and community connectivity. When constructed, the OGPPS will provide an improved footpath network in old Ocean Grove proving improved and safe connection for in particular older residents and young families. Other topics are a pedestrian and cycle link for the Bellarine, Bellarine light rail link and Bellarine Environment and Cultural Heritage Centre.

Concerns over Geelong train station revolve around recent statements by both major parties on the significant improvement to the VLine link from Geelong to Melbourne and that any planning should address improving the station, including passenger and visitor services and parking. Another train station to ease the increasing load on Marshall and South Geelong stations will also be discussed. The forum is on 14 November at 7pm and Ocean Grove Bowling Club.

Search on for pres By Mark Heenan Ocean Grove Football Netball Club commences its search for a new president after Tony Potter stood down from the role at the Grubbers' AGM on Sunday 28 October. No nominations for the president's role were made at the annual general meeting where up to 50 people attended at the Shell Road sports pavilion, including new senior playing coach Jordan Jones. Potter who spent three years as OGFNC president, confirmed 2018 would be his final year in charge. Potter will serve as a general club committee member for the 2019 season. He thanked fellow committee members and family for their ongoing support across his three-year tenure. "For myself after three years I will be stepping down as president, it has been fun and it has been fantastic and a great journey," Potter told members and supporters at the AGM. "To all the committee and especially to (vice-president) Pete (Smith) all the hard work you put in throughout the year is really appreciated and thanks very much. "To Justine and my family for allowing me to spend most of my time up here at the club, not at home. "It has been great three years." Potter said highlights included the introduction of new senior women's and girls' footy teams, its closer alignment with the re-named Ocean Grove Cobras Juniors Football Club and the Grubbers' growing list of fundraising events. In 2018, the Grubbers fielded a total of 29 teams across men's and women's football and netball. Traffic alterations for Barwon Heads Traffic controllers will be employed to combat Barwon Heads' traffic congestion this summer. Member for Bellarine Lisa Neville today announced that traffic controllers will be trialled at the pedestrian crossing on Bridge Road during the day time peak periods, from Christmas Eve until after the Australia Day holiday. To address the increased traffic over the rest of the year, Regional Roads Victoria (RRV) will install a new left-hand turn lane onto Ewing Blyth Drive from the Barwon Heads Bridge, to prevent queuing on the bridge and keep traffic flowing onto Bridge Road. Temporary electronic Variable Message Signs utilising blue tooth technology will also be installed to advise drivers of the current travel time to Barwon Heads from Ocean Grove, so that they can make informed decisions about whether they should seek an alternate route if there are delays. These measures will be monitored by RRV over summer to determine the effectiveness of the changes. "I've heard the Bellarine community loud and clear - that's why the Andrews Labor government is taking action to improve travel times in Barwon Heads this summer," Ms Neville said. "These measures will slash congestion and ensure pedestrian safety - so visitors and locals alike can enjoy everything our coastal community has to offer." Due to its popularity as a holiday destination, Barwon Heads has attracted a significant increase in traffic in recent years - with the travel time from Ocean Grove to Barwon Heads jumping to an average of 20-25 minutes in peak times last summer. To check out what other works are underway or planned in the Bellarine visit regionalroads.vic.gov.au.

New traffic controls have been announced for Barwon Heads this summer.

Dog attack spurs action A recent incident involving a dog that killed a possum on a local beach has prompted Barwon Coast to encourage beach users to register for a free workshop. The unrestrained dog was seen brutally killing a brush-tail possum and carry its prize along the foreshore in Barwon Heads, Barwon Coast manager community liaison and education Maddie Glynn said. "This could have been easily prevented had the person responsible for the dog, kept it close by and under effective control," Ms Glynn said. "Some people would say, it's just a brushtail possum, however, due to old trees being removed from the landscape, housing development and people displacing possums from their private residence, these nocturnal animals are left to roam during the day, becoming vulnerable, stressed and open to attack by dogs and cats." Barwon Coast's Share our Shores program will initiate a free workshop to gather information on how to share our beaches and what to do in the event of an incident and how to keep yourself, your family and wildlife safe. "Our coastal strip is home for these creatures and many more, but it won't be if we continue to think that it is there purely for the enjoyment of people and domestic pets," Ms Glynn said. "We must all work together to learn to Share our Shores. "We can co-exist and have the best of both worlds, we just have to be aware of our local wildlife that relies on the coast for their very existence and be responsible." To register your attendance at 24 November Beach Harmony Workshop, email natalie@cherishedpetcare.com.au or go to www.trybooking.com/YDTD.

Thank you to all the wonderful local businesses that helped support our Ocean Grove Primary School Annual Colour Run this year.

Bellarine volunteers needed for our SES

OG school funding under Labor govt

Bellarine SES is seeking volunteers. Victoria State Emergency Service (VICSES) Bellarine Unit is currently recruiting new members to play a vital role in assisting the community during emergency situations in a wide range of roles. VICSES volunteers provide on the ground support during emergencies, from responding to natural disasters such as flood, storm, tsunami, earthquake and landslide, to road rescue, and supporting other emergency service organisations. Volunteers also work with the community to strengthen the public's capacity to plan, respond and recover, when emergencies occur. VICSES volunteers receive accredited, recognised training as part of their role, which could include first aid, general rescue, chainsaw operations, community education, media training and much more. "One of the things that make VICSES so great is the diversity of our members," VICSES Bellarine Unit controller Russell Harrison said. "You can have teachers working alongside electricians, retirees and university students. There really is a role for everyone. "Volunteering with VICSES has been such a rewarding experience. The Bellarine Unit is a great place to meet new and interesting people and while supporting your community. "There is so much opportunity here at VICSES and it's always great to see new members get involved in the variety of different roles we offer".

Ocean Grove public schools will receive more than $1 million under a federal Labor government, as part of a $14 billion investment in public education. Bellarine Secondary College will benefit from an additional $660,000 in funding at its Ocean Grove campus, while Ocean Grove Primary School will receive $610,000 in extra funds over the three years from 2020. In all, Corangamite schools will see an extra $15.2 million in funding under the plan. Labor Candidate for Corangamite, Libby Coker, said the plan was a big win for public schools and students in the region "Labor's record school funding will ensure Ocean Grove public schools get the funding they need to give students the best chance for a rewarding future," Ms Coker said. "It will mean more individual attention, more support with numeracy and literacy and new skills to help young people secure the jobs of the future. "This investment will also enable public schools to offer a broader range of subjects in languages, coding, the arts and vocational education." The announcement comes after Labor pledged $2 million towards an upgrade of Our Lady Star of the Sea school under an elected state government. The $3 million project will include the construction of multi-purpose centre including three general learning areas, collaborative area, staff work space, small hall space, storage, extend car park.

Volunteering for the SES can be a rewarding experience.

The VICSES Bellarine Unit, located at Drysdale, is holding an information session on Wednesday 28 November 2018 at 7pm. If you would like to learn more about becoming a VICSES volunteer, get to information session to find out more. RSVP is required. Contact the Bellarine unit on the phone on 0427 074 029 or via bellarine@ses.vic.gov.au or ses.vic.gov.au/volunteer.

Ocean Grove Primary School Grade 4 students were successful and will go to the state titles.

Our basketball stars Ocean Grove, meet your latest local basketball stars. Grade 4 students from Ocean Grove Primary School have won the Bulla Hoop Time, Junior All Stars regional finals, at the impressive Eagle Stadium in Werribee. Both the Grade 4 girls and boys sides progressed through to the state finals in an amazing day of basketball for the school. Bulla Hoop Time is a basketball tournament that gives students the opportunity to

play across Victoria. Ocean Grove Primary School PE teacher Richard Hughes was a happy man after the tournament. "Thrilled with the effort of the teams, it's a fierce competition and at the end of the day to win both grand finals was fantastic," he said. Now both teams are heading off to the Junior All Stars State Finals in Dandenong on Monday 26 of November. Players from both teams, Asha Boyd and

Austin Gill were both excited and proud of how their teams played. Delivering for Ocean Grove Improving community safety, backing commemorative projects for veterans, supporting the Ocean Grove Surf Life Saving Club and Ocean Grove Tennis Club, building the Shell Rd sports pavilion, funding the Ocean Grove and District Men’s Shed, rolling out high speed NBN and investing in Bellarine Community Health… I am proud to be delivering for Ocean Grove. Across Corangamite, the Federal Liberal government has delivered many important local investments including in major road and rail upgrades, vital sports and community infrastructure, job creation, an international terminal for Avalon and a $154 million City Deal to boost the visitor economy. Population growth, inadequate infrastructure and local crime are of increasing concern. We need to protect our way of life in this very special part of the world. Bellarine residents have not been well served by a state Labor government. Please let me know what’s important to you so that, together, we can build a stronger community across all of the Bellarine.

Privilege to represent the Bellarine As we near the end of this parliamentary term, I take this opportunity to note that it has been a privilege to represent the Bellarine in the state parliament over the last four years. In that time I have always worked hard to deliver important infrastructure and services for our local communities. Projects that people have advocated for and projects that local communities need. At the 2014 election I committed to numerous projects for the peninsula and I am proud to say that every one of them have been delivered in full. For schools this has meant mutlimillion dollar funds for upgrades to Bellarine and St Ignatius Secondary colleges and primaries right across the Bellarine like Ocean Grove, Surfside, Drysdale Leopold and Portarlington. For Bellarine Secondary College, we have subsequently committed to building an $8.9 million VCE Centre if re-elected. Building better roads is always a priority and as such the Drysdale bypass has commenced, planning for the upgrade to Grubb Road is underway and we have committed to a duplicated Barwon Heads Road. Over the last four years and more I have also been very pleased to work with clubs like the Ocean Grove Surf Life Saving Club where the club's facilities are currently being rebuilt with a grant of $4.3 million from the state government. And in recent weeks I was pleased to announce the state government's Pick My Projects fund has ensured the Collendina sports ground will have much need upgraded lights

and an all abilities track will be constructed through the Ocean Grove Nature Reserve. Planning is of course an important issue on the peninsula and is regularly raised with me when speaking with people across the Bellarine. I am therefore pleased to note that an elected Andrews state government will permanently protect the Bellarine Peninsula from over development with planning protection enshrined in law, locking in town boundaries and protecting them from over development. And in health, a new ambulance station is being built at Swan Bay, a strategic centralised location for quicker emergency response. The allocated crews are currently working out of Mannerim. In addition, if re-elected, we will allocate a dedicated mobile intensive care ambulance officers to the Bellarine, upgrade the Ocean Grove station and provide extra nurses and specialists appointments to Geelong Hospital. Finally, I reiterate my commitment to all the communities of the Bellarine. They are great communities, made up of locals dedicated to the current and future well being of their towns and I look forward to working with those communities if given the privilege of once again representing them in the parliament. As always, please don't hesitate to contact me by email or call my office if there are any matters that I may be able to assist you with directly. Fair fun excitement at Drysdale

Year 2 students and staff are excited about the grant which will enable the school to rejuvenate and add to its indigenous garden.

Garden grant boost Our Lady Star of the Sea Primary School was one of 109 schools and youth organisations to receive a Victorian Junior Landcare and Biodiversity Grant. Funded by the Victorian Department of Environment, Land Water & Planning, the grants are being run by Landcare Australia as part of its Junior Landcare program. Using their grant of $4600, students across all year levels will be working together to rejuvenate their indigenous garden and amphitheatre area. This project will increase habitat areas for wildlife within the school grounds by planting indigenous trees and shrubs and adding nesting boxes, rocks and logs to the passive

play area at the front of the school. Students, staff and parents will contribute to the final design, site preparation, planting, creating indigenous art work and maintenance of the area. "It is wonderful that our school has been given the opportunity to earnestly revisit the significance of our indigenous garden, through the Victorian Junior Landcare and Biodiversity Grant," Marianne Caddy, Social Justice Leader and original member of Star of the Sea, Indigenous Garden committee said. "Our garden has a significant spiritual history, established through the life of a young man and his connection to the traditional

owners of this land. Through this funding our students will be brought to a greater understanding of the importance of the land for our Aboriginal forefathers and their continued presence in the life growing in and attracted to this garden. "The soul and spirit of Aboriginal people is shared with us through this garden." The Victorian government is funding the grants to provide young Victorians at schools, groups and communities to participate in outdoor, hands-on, on-ground projects, and environmental learning activities that provide both environmental and educational outcomes, as well as health and social benefits.

Drysdale Primary School's annual spring fair is on again. It's the school's major fundraiser for the year and will feature heaps of entertainment, activities, market stalls and more. Live music will be provided by the Gems and there will be a teacher and a school band playing on the day. Activities include a haunted house, throw a pie at a teacher, slime a principal, an orienteering course, chill out zone, life-sized dinosaurs, inflatable soccer, water play area, photo booth, lucky cups, badge making, chocolate wheel, amusement rides, pony rides and show bags. The usual assortment of market stalls will please the bargain hunter and there is a flower shower (tickets $5 pre-sale or $10 at the fair) with $1000 in prizes. Browse the cake stall, get your face painted and tuck into the delicious array of food options to choose from. Spring fair tickets are used throughout the fair and can be pre-purchased from the school office or at the fair. The fair's major sponsors are Surf Junction, Kylie Atkinson Drysdale Canteen, Total Martial Arts Drysdale, JT Dixon Packaging, Drysdale Clinic, AJK Builders, Pipedream Plumbing and Bargain Basement Drysdale. The fair is on Friday 16 November from 3.30pm to 7.30pm at Drysdale Primary School.

ENVIRONMENT

Treatment plant bears fruit I've had an odd few weeks, with my oldest daughter having to go to hospital, and I've been up an down to Melbourne in between night shifts. The advantage of going to Melbourne is that Western Treatment Plant (WTP) is on the way home, and I did take advantage of that and drop in one day on the drive home. I was fortunate to drive to the T-section Lagoons at WTP, and I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw eight glossy ibis near the Crake Pond. I thought for a moment that I was back at Fogg Dam in the Northern Territory. The glossy ibis looks black from a distance, but is actually is reddish-brown, with glossy, bottle-green wings. The curved bill is olive coloured, and the eyes, legs and feet are brown. Glossy ibis are much more commonly seen in the northern parts of Australia, and are listed as 'vulnerable' in Victoria, so it was great to see eight of them. I also spotted a juvenile collared sparrowhawk (CSH) at Connewarre. It was perched in a dead tree, and a few galahs were in the same tree trying to appear cool, calm and collected but obviously keeping a close eye on the sparrowhawk. I could tell it was CSH, rather than a brown goshawk because of the squareshaped tail feathers, long, thin legs, and wide eyed stare rather than a beetle-brow stare that characterises the brown goshawk. Birdlife Australia asked for volunteers a few months ago to survey birds on farms and I

Glossy ibis at Western Treatment Plant. thought that would be a lovely thing to do even though I really have more than enough on my plate as it is. However I went to a farm in Wallington last week with Chris from Birdlife Australia, and it was just wonderful! The farm had a wetland habitat where there were black-winged stilts, whiskered terns, sharp-tailed sandpipers, swans and little grassbirds. There was a very vocal sacred kingfisher calling, but unfortunately I didn't spot it. The day was just glorious. I learned two things when conducting the survey - namely that if I had a farm I wouldn't get much work done as bird watching would be very time consuming, and also it's very hard to take photos when conducting a survey as you miss most of what is going on when you concentrate on one bird. I received an email from Carole, who has

been in northwestern Victoria with the Bellarine Birdlife Group. She sent me an image of a tawny frogmouth family, and it is a most wonderful photograph. Kevin sent me an image taken in Queenscliff of two royal spoonbills and two little egrets feeding in Swan Bay. What a beautiful sight. Kevin also sent me a photo of a cattle egret in breeding plumage, hanging around a sheep. In the breeding season the normally white cattle egrets develop an orange crown, neck and breast. I also received a phone call from Christine who lives in old Ocean Grove, who has a pair of sulphur-crested cockatoos nesting in the yellow gum tree in her garden. I look forward to seeing their offspring one day. Thanks so much for the photos and calls. They are much appreciated.

THE LOCAL GUIDE FOR DINING ON THE BELLARINE

Two new additions to team

Check out the Cheeki range of cups, straws and drink bottles.

1225058-HM16-16

The Cheeky Cow would like to welcome new staff members Paul, in the front house, and Hanna, assisting Mitch, out the back. Paul brings more than 20 years of hospitality experience to 'the cow' and he is looking forward to sharing this experience with the team and getting things ready for a busy summer. Hanna, joins 'the cow' as a second-year apprentice and also likes making the odd cheeky sweet or two. Be sure to get on down there and get something cheeky on your plate. The Cheeky Cow also welcomes the 'Cheeki' range of cups, straws, drink bottles and more to its shelves. Keeping in line with its environmentally conscious approach to the hospitality business, the purchase of something from the range helps in reducing waste footprint that is normally associated with most takeaway products. You get a first fill for free when you buy a cup from the Cheeky Cow and ANY cup gets 50 cents off to encourage everyone to use one. The Cow is on an in-house education program to recycle better and encourage anyone to come grab some coffee grinds for your garden and treat the worms to a little morning pick up that we all enjoy so much. The Cheeky Cow has always been a community minded business and is encouraging feedback on its new specials program which will assist in the production of its summer menu. "After all it's all about what you want - not what we want to make," says head chef Mitchell.

Beat snoring Anyone who snores through the night and wakes feeling sluggish could have obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). The condition can contribute to weight gain, depression, stroke, diabetes, high blood pressure and even heart attacks. Sleep physicians can recommend only two proven treatments for snoring and OSA: continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) devices; and custom-made oral appliances made by trained dentists to bring the lower jaw forward, opening the back of the throat and keeping the airway open.

However, many people using a CPAP machine find it uncomfortable and struggle to use it for more than four hours a night. "Don't let snoring and the effects of OSA ruin your relationship and quality of life, there is a highly effective treatment right now" says Dr Sam Talpis, clinical co-founder of Dental Sleep Clinic Australia. The business is Geelong's only sleep clinic exclusively making oral appliances for snoring and sleep apnoea. Created from superior-strength materials, which allow the appliances to be thin and com-

Free event on at Kings Gothic property of Coriyule. As well as covering the lives of the Lady Squatters, this presentation looks at the property owners before Anne and Caroline, and those who followed through to the present-day owners. The gardens of Coriyule were also famous for their design as well as their award-winning productive orchards. In recent times the grounds of Coriyule have been open as part of the Open Garden scheme. More than 175 years of documented evidence tell the story of this amazing property and its owners. Genealogist and historian Susie Zada will host a free event, The Lady Squatter and Coriyule, at Kings Funerals on 21 November. Coriyule is the oldest residential property still in use on the Bellarine Peninsula. It was built by the 'Lady Squatters' - Anne Drysdale and Caroline Newcomb. Take this opportunity to hear about these very early, very successful and quite unique pioneers in Victoria. Anne Drysdale was an independent woman from Scotland who arrived in 1839 already experienced in farming. She met up with Caroline Newcomb, an Englishwoman, who came to Port Phillip in 1836 as the governess to John Batman's children. Their successful partnership saw them progress from a small cottage on their first property, Boronggoop, to their beautiful two-storey architecturally designed colonial

Di and Bruce Johnson on the deck of the unit they share after remarrying at Ingenia Lifestyle Lara.

Together again at Ingenia Two residents of Ingenia Lifestyle Lara have rekindled their love after unwittingly moving into the same retirement community a stone's throw away from each other. Di and Bruce Johnson, both in their 60s, purchased their properties in early 2017 before reuniting while participating in the community's Be Active program. "Although separating was truly awful, we wouldn't have sold our home and downsized to Ingenia Lifestyle Lara otherwise, and if it wasn't for this fantastic community we might not have gotten back together," Bruce says. "After we began spending more time tooceangrovevoice.com.au

gether again I decided to open a love letter Di had written to me when we separated. It was unopen because previously I couldn't bear to read it but, having the newfound hope we were rekindling, I thought, 'What the heck'. "After reading the letter I knew I was not letting this woman go again." The pair married 18 months later in Bruce's backyard. The pair has just returned from their second honeymoon. They decided the Ingenia brand was their good luck charm and visited Ingenia Holidays Cairns Coconut resort this spring. Wednesday, 7 November, 2018

Tuckers' Time to remember The summer holiday season is just around the corner and traditionally we spend this time enjoying the company of our family and friends. However, each year there are many people who will face the holidays and Christmas for the first time since experiencing the passing of their loved one. Regardless of our age grief can come to us in many forms and often the most difficult bereavement of all is the loss of a loved one. Grief can be a confusing experience for both the bereaved and those who are trying to comfort them - grieving people are often misunderstood because their world has been literally turned upside down. Assisting families and individuals during these times is part of the support provided by the team at Tuckers Funeral and Bereavement Service. In November of each year, Tuckers extend their Bereavement Care Program to the wider community by hosting a special Christmas memorial service. 'A Time to Remember' is aimed at helping those who have experienced grief and loss and to prepare for the Christmas period in particular. Tuckers Bereavement Care Program has been a support network for the Geelong community since the late 1970s and this event, 'A Time to Remember', is an extension of that care. "We are passionate about caring for our community, and that extends beyond the funeral service. Not everyone needs additional support, but it is something that can be re-

The event is free to attend and supper will be provided, for more details contact Tuckers on 5221 4788.

Cliffhanger game vs Port Ocean Grove's Under 13s had a very close game against Portarlington Portarlington had two balls left to bowl and two runs were needed to win by Ocean Grove. Ben Coote had lofted a boundary, and struck a three and a two off the previous over to make it an exciting finish. He charged and missed the second last ball and lost his stumps. Taz Higgins came to the crease to join Ocean Grove's new recruit Will Dunstan. Will had bowled a very tidy three overs earlier in the morning that started cool and grey. Ocean Grove bowled generally well and Merric Platt took a fine high outfield catch fingers pointing skyward - off the bowling of Miller Keck and this was the only wicket taken by them as a dominant Portarlington batting display racked up 1/117 from 26 overs. Ocean Grove composed themselves towards the end of the innings with tight bowling from Tyler Bishop and Ben Coote as the game flowed back toward them after ebbing away in a powerful current of hard hitting during the middle of the Portarlington innings. Charlie Larsen, one of the competition's most consistent openers started the innings confidently with Miller Keck who so often just gets his job done. After retirements from Keck (12 no) Larsen (21 no), followed by the same from the leg side master Henry Wood (10 no) and the dynamic Merric Platt (15 no) Ocean Grove were ready to accelerate at 0/62 from 12 overs. There was no acceleration though, and the game ebbed and flowed as Portarlington hung tight and the Ocean Grove boys had to settle for singles and sundries to keep edging toward the target score. This is U/13 cricket where all the kids get a go and they thoroughly enjoy being involved and this combined with one day matches can make for some close finishes. Finally the grey sky lifted and the weather warmed and so did the game. Nineteen was needed from the last three overs. Calm batsmen were needed as the game gathered some intensity. The crowd was small but all eyes were peeled on the game. Ben Coote (12) along with Aidan Foard (5) were patiently pushing toward the target amid the growing excitement of the match. And it came down to that last ball. Portarlington's captain Joel De Bono bowled a straight ball and Taz Higgins thick edged into the covers and made an easy single. Will Dunstan was smart and called Taz back for a second and amidst all the drama of a screaming and cheering Ocean Grove team from the deep midwicket boundary there was a slightly high throw to the keeper's end and the boys scrambled through for an unlikely second run. Ocean Grove had won a most entertaining game and they continue to impress with their team spirit and composure. After two grading matches Ocean Grove, who were premiers in 2017/18 season, have been promoted into Division One (Royce) competition. "This is exciting news for the team," coach Dean Platt said. 'We've kept a strong core of last year's premiership team so it is reward for their hard work to be promoted."

Final grading games for combined Cobras/Seagulls Under 15 The Collendina/Barwon Heads under 15s made their way into Eastern Gardens to take on Geelong City in the final grading game. Combine Captain Luca Vella won the toss and elected to bat. He opened the batting with the reliable Will Duncombe and the pair combined to put on an opening stand of 35 when Duncombe was dismissed for 12. Vella and Harrison O'Neill (11) took the score to 50. Vella was dismissed for a fine 23 and number four Max McLaclhan also made an aggressive 23 including a six before he was retired not out. Baxter Stephensen (12) and Ollie Northam (13) combined for a quickfire 27 run partnership to get the Cobra/Seagulls to a very competitive 5/118 off their 25 overs. Oscar Walter and Nick Gibbon opened the bowling and tied the Geelong City batsmen down from the start. Walter got the initial breakthrough finishing with 1/4 off three overs oceangrovevoice.com.au

and Gibbon only conceded three runs from his three overs. Harrison O'Neill, Max McLachlan and Luca Vella all took one wicket each but the standout with the ball was Ollie Northam who, in a fine all round performance, took 2/9 off two overs to go with his 13 not out with the bat. This fine bowling effort restricted Geelong City to 7/81 of 25 overs. A great win for the Combine. Under 13 Ellwood The Cobras hosted GCA powerhouse Leopold Cricket Club in this final one day grading game at the Snake pit. Harrisyn Wingrave and Luke O'Brien opened the bowling and were very miserly. Wingrave, Lachie Payne and Gus McCartney all took one wicket each for not many runs but the main destroyer was captain Ted Farrell who took a fine 3/11 off three overs. Along with some fine fielding including a stumping to Alex Gibbon, catches to Ollie Terhorst, Ted

Farrell, Luke O'Brien, and a superb run out to Will Mitchell, the Cobras restricted Leopold to 7/67 off 26 overs. Would the reply be as clinical? Ollie Terhorst and Alex Gibbon opened the batting and got things off to a great start. Gibbon (16) and Terhorst (20) both had to be retired as did Harrisyn Wingrave who made a fine 21. Farrell made a handy 10 to go along with his three wickets in a fine all round performance. The Leopold total was no match for the Cobras who made it to a great 4/120 off 26 overs. Coach Rob Cunningham will be very excited with this early season form. Under 13 Walter Collendina Walter made the journey over the bridge to take on Barwon Heads in this final one day grading game. The Seagulls won the toss and elected to bat. George Every and Angus Peters opened the bowling but the Gulls got off to a good start

making it to 27 before losing their first wicket. George Every removed Archie Steward and finished with the figures of 1/15 off two overs. Noah Jeffrey, Lucas Anderson and Fraser Stow also took one wicket each but the Seagulls got away from the Cobras making it to a very strong 5/132 off 26 overs. The batting reply would have to be good to chase this total down. The response started well with captain Jack Every and Noah Jeffrey putting on a solid opening stand of 30 before Every was Dismissed for 10. Jeffrey went on to be retired for a fine 22. Fraser Stow (11) and James Stow (16 retired) were also strong contributors in what was a very competitive total but not enough to catch the seagulls. The Cobras finished on 6/105 off 26 overs. Coach Craig Jeffrey will find the positives in this loss and Collendina Walter will bounce back. Wednesday, 7 November, 2018

Perfect start for Grovers Both Ocean Grove top division sides are off to the perfect start with a clean slate after five rounds of the Geelong Ballarat Premier Division and the midweek competition. The reigning state champions of the Victorian Midweek Pennant competition look ahead to a match up with St Leonards next Thursday after getting over the line against Queenscliff last week. Playing at home the Faye Richardson rink of Carol Howarth, Jeff Howarth and Rod Brehaut controlled the day when they carded a win by 11 which was enough to secure the overall margin of the match by a single shot. The win, the team's fifth in a row sees it well on track heading towards the Christmas break and five points ahead on the ladder against second placed Torquay. Hosting the reigning premiers Queenscliff on the greens at Ocean Grove in round five the match of the round did not disappoint. The break came at the right time for the home side trailing by eight shots but the sandwiches provided the fuel required for the Grover's to step it up and gain the momentum in the second half. Will Collihole skipping his first game in the Grove colours stood tall and led his team of Brian Boyle also in his debut match, Terry Brady and Ken Thomas to an eigh- shot win whilst Craig Rippon, Cal Hanna, Chris Price and Matt Flapper ensured the majority of the match points stayed with the home side with their rink's 30-17 margin. Five wins from five matches a perfect start as the side hosts Highton next week. Top of the ladder has a ring to it at present for not only the first division midweek side but also in three others. A clean sweep of points for the Division Three side in round six against Geelong RSL with Terri Rudge carding the biggest score of 33-16 kept the undefeated record intact as the Grover's had the better of their opposition on their home green. The win kept the three's on top and eight points clear of Anglesea in second. Mavis Harling, Peter Corcoran, Brian 'Father' Ryan and Joyce Fraser adapted to the Geelong surface from end one to dominate their game and record a match winning 39-7 win which was also supported by Skippers Lizzy Braley plus 6 and Nutsy Almond plus 11 as the Division Four side won their third game of the season to sit atop the ladder five points ahead of Geelong Cement. Torquay proved the happy hunting ground for Maureen Brooks, Peter Maishman, Robyn Cary and Marene Turnley as they guided the Grovers to their fourth win on the trot in the Division Five side. A win to Lyn Stonehouse by four and a narrow loss to Kerri Simpson kept the fives in first place four points ahead of Bannockburn who we come up against next Thursday in round six. John Forde, Sandra O'Keefe, Graeme Constable and Heather Quilty earned themselves the drink vouchers when they equalled the winning margin of 32 set by Joyce Fraser. The win equally the biggest of the round five midweek competition in the Geelong region and good enough to register the match points and their second win in Division Six. The clean sweep of points at Belmont resulted in third place on the ladder after five games in the Division One competition. The slow start to the season now behind them three on the trot and gaining momentum as they look forward to their round six clash with Highton 2. Owen Clark displayed his brilliance to guide his team to the biggest win of the day 31-19. Michael Allen turned around a 16-shot difference to register a one shot win whilst Alan Callows team continued their run of good form with a four shot win. Elaine Price, Luke Benson, Gary Burkett and Rod Brehaut capitalising on a good day out with their 11-shot win. Greg Carbines, Cheyne Verrier, Geoff Fry and Rod Swan kept the unbeaten Division Threes on track when they were too good for Bareena at home 33-15 and the tag of king of the rinks good enough to provide the platform for the other three rinks to relax and play good bowls to collect all points on offer for the day. Wins to Division three/four against Highton stepped them into the top four whilst Trevor Mcpherson skipped his team of Peter Eberle, Marene Turnley and David Hurford to the 34 VOICE

match winning margin of 31-14 against Lara in Division Six. Two rink wins both by the same margins of 37-18 to skips Albert Touwslager and Bob Brook against Anglesea was enough to steer the sevens to a winning score whilst Martin Van Doren plus seven earned the 10 match points in the Division Ten side against Geelong RSL. State Selection for Mcilvenny Ocean Grove recruit and skipper Leigh McIlvenny earned selection into the Victorian men's state team to play Tasmania in December. Mcilvenny has impressed at all levels over the last 18 months with consistent performances in Victorian Opens and Master Singles events. State trials in early October provided the opportunity for McIlvenny to impress and he will make his debut playing second for Ocean Grove's Matt Flapper. Under 18 star Kira Bourke will also debut in the ladies state team the same week. Minors and 21 up champs Two club championships have been decided and it was a family affair in the 21up event. In the ladies event Carol Howarth was successful against Faye Bowyer whilst the men's champion was Jeff Howarth who was able to overcome Gary Bowyer. The minor champions for season 2018-19 survived what proved to be two epic finals played in challenging conditions. Dan Goodall went head to head with Dave Stonehouse and a 21-17 win to Goodall saw him take the title while Betty Wilding was the winner of a cliffhanger with Lorraine Oliver 21-19.

137-run stand saves day By Mark Heenan A key batting partnership between Ben Ricardo and Jacob Gasior gave Collendina ascendancy over Drysdale at stumps at the Snake Pit on 3 November. The winless Hawks had the home side on the ropes at 4/46 before Ricardo (78) and Gasior (54) steadied the innings for Collendina after day one of its two-day clash. The Cobras at stumps were 8/227 from its 75 overs. Drysdale's Troy Jones made early inroads and grabbed two of the first three wickets and finished with 4/40 from 19 overs. Ricardo and Gasior shared in a fifth-wicket 137-run partnership stand and set about a vital team recovery. "Yes, was well needed at 4-46," Ricardo said. The experienced Ricardo has averaged over 100 in last two hits against Drysdale. Last season he crafted an impressive 125 against the Hawks. "I said to the boys sometimes when a guy that is as good as Ben comes in and scratches around at the start you have got to take advantage of it because if you allow him to get in whilst he has been scratchy you are going to be in trouble," Drysdale Cricket Club coach Shane Cutajar told the Voice. "And that is how it turned out - he got in and hit the ball really clean." Collendina captain Nathan Walter praised Gasior, who scored his first half century in the BPCA top grade. "My message to him was to bat with Benny," Walter told the Voice. "All he had to do was hang in there with him and he sort of bided his time and then got to a point where we said to him 'free up the arms a bit' and then he did that. "We were happy with the job he did for us." Star Cobra bowler Charlie Lamb provided some late order resistance with the bat after an

Earlier in the innings Sam Beasley contributed 28 for Collendina. Walter is confident his side can defend 227 with the luxury of experienced Cobra bowling pair Jye Hearps and Charlie Lamb both playing. "It gives us a good score to bowl at," Walter said. Promising Hawk bowler Blake Robinson took 2/52 from 16 overs, while Dylan Justice bowled a lengthy stint and finished with 2/62 from 23 overs. "What I saw from (Robinson) was absolutely fantastic," Cutajar said. "As it turned out it was Blake's first A Grade game for the club."

Collendina sits in fifth spot, while bottomplaced Drysdale is in eighth position on the A1 ladder after four rounds. B1 COBRA Max Sutton was the star on day one of Collendina's two-day clash against Barrabool. Sutton, normally the club's A1 wicket-keeper was unavailable to play this Saturday 10 November, hit a well made 96 in the Cobras' total 8/215 from 75 overs. Collendina pair Jake Gittins (47) and Des Every (28) made valuable contributions. Barrabool bowler Ryan Werner took 5/52 from 14 overs.

Jacob Gasior watches the ball closely during his innings of 54. 187155 C1 ANGLESEA claimed first innings points over Collendina in a two-day game at Bellarine Secondary College's Ocean Grove campus. The visitors won the toss and sent Collendina into bat first and ripped through the Cobras batting line-up for only 118. In reply Anglesea had passed the Cobras total and was 2/132 at stumps. D GRADE COLLENDINA had the bye in the D Grade one-day competition and will play Queenscliff in a 40 over game this Saturday at Charles McCarthy Memorial Oval.

Anglesea holds upper hand By Mark Heenan Anglesea gained the upper hand after it triggered an Ocean Grove batting collapse at Ray Menzies Memorial Oval on Saturday. The 2017/18 A Grade premiers remain in a strong position heading into day two after the Kangaroos dismissed the Grubbers for only 158. At stumps, Anglesea was 1/34 after 16 overs after Lindon Giuffrida removed opener Stephen Jacimovic (0) for a duck before play ended on day one. Gun Anglesea bat Ned Cooper remains 25 not out. Ladder leader Ocean Grove's 4-0 unbeaten record remains intact and Grubber captain coach Paul Jubber is confident his side could turn it around with early wickets this Saturday. "To get his (Ned Cooper's) wicket is a priority for us next week - he is fully aware of how important he is to their side," Jubber told the Voice. "If we can get him relatively early we really feel that we could win the game." He said the batting collapses in recent games was a concern which the Grubbers needed to address. At one stage, the Grubbers fell in a hole at 6/86, despite contributions from Michael Kenneady (38) and Ocean Grove playing assistant coach Andre Scholtz (37) late in the innings. "It is a concern, losing clumps of wickets never really enables you to build any momentum for your innings," Jubber said. "We certainly lacked the ability to keep scoring runs even though we were losing wickets. "For us we need to address it and we need to address it pretty quickly." Anglesea coach and speedster Dale Kerr's four-wicket haul helped put his side on the front foot. Tyler Dittloff took 3/22 from 8.4 overs. Kerr removed Kenneady and skittled Scholtz's stumps to finish with 4/48 from 24 overs. oceangrovevoice.com.au

Michael Kenneady dives for the ball. 187154 Kerr missed a large chunk of 2016/17 with a serious back injury and was the leading wicket-taker in the A Grade competition last season with 58 wickets at 8.03. "The body is actually not feeling too bad ... can't really complain and hopefully fingers crossed it holds me up for the rest of the season and see how we go," Kerr told the Voice. Jubber was full of praise for Kerr's bowling feats. "Dale is a terrific player and moves with good pace and a bit of in-swing - he is a competitor," he said. Kerr said despite his side's victory over the Grubbers in the 2017/18 decider, he is wary Ocean Grove had the wood over Anglesea in recent times. Ocean Grove has defeated Anglesea in two of their last three outings at Anglesea, including the Grubbers' recent 41-run win in Round 2 on 13 October.

"They do sort have a little bit over us, obviously besides the grand final, it is normally a really tough tight game," he said. A2 OCEAN Grove's second XI has the chance to secure their first victory this season after a positive start on day one of their two-day clash against St Leonards in A2 at Len Trewin Reserve. The winless Grubbers compiled 9/299 from 75 overs. Grubber opener Dylan Thorley (65) made a half-century while Ben Hughes top scored with 68. St Leonards bowler Lachlan Campbell claimed 5/81 from 22 overs. The home side requires an unlikely 300 for victory. B2 A brilliant innings from Grubber opener Pat

Kuipers gave Ocean Grove day one honours in their two-day clash against St Leonards. Kuipers plundered a whopping 191 in Ocean Grove's total of 5/329 declared. Kuipers hit 25 boundaries and 8 sixes, while team-mate Darren Craig was unbeaten on 64 not out. At stumps in reply, St Leonards were 0/14 after nine overs. D GRADE OCEAN Grove had a comfortable ninewicket victory over Little River in their one-day clash at Rees Reserve in the D Grade one-day competition. Batting first, the home side was all out for 113 from 35.3 overs. In reply, the Grubbers won with three overs to spare. Opener Ry Edwards led the way with 74 not out on debut in his side's total of 1/119. Wednesday, 7 November, 2018

Bombers return to Grove By Mark Heenan Essendon Football Club heads back to the Ocean Grove region next month with confirmation the club will host a local AFL training camp in December. The Bombers took part in a four-day summer camp at Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads this February and conducted training at Ray Menzies Memorial Oval at Shell Road. Essendon had positive feedback from the

local Ocean Grove community, City of Greater Geelong and support from Ocean Grove Cricket Club to use facilities at Shell Road. Up to 70 staff including the entire Essendon playing list, coaching staff, sports science personnel and members of the football department spent four days at this year's February training camp on the Bellarine. Club Head of Football Operations and Compliance, Matt O'Hanlon, confirmed the Bombers would return and train at Shell Road

on Wednesday 12 December as part of a twoday camp. "We plan to have a training session (at Shell Road) in the morning on Wednesday December 12," O'Hanlon told the Voice. "Players may arrive on Tuesday night (day before) and they will be here until Thursday December 13. "The details are still being finalised." Locally based Essendon supporter and for-

mer Ocean Grove Football Netball Club president Geoff Cunningham was delighted when he found out. Cunningham, a Surfside Primary School teacher, said it would be great for local nearby school students to meet their AFL heroes at a club training session at Shell Road. "It will be good," Cunningham said. "I like the concept and it will be great for the schools."

It doesn’t get much better than this Ocean Grove Bowling Club coach Matt Flapper liked this bowl on the weekend and would be delighted with his club's perfect start in the Premier Division. The Grovers defeated Queenscliff in a battle of last year's grand final. For the full report and more Mark Heenan Media pictures see page 34.
