A 24 hour police facility could be built in Narre Warren if the Labor Government is re-elected in the state election. Labor will invest $34 million to build a brand new police station on a new site that is highly visible, more accessible to the community and better suits operational needs. This will include scoping land opportunities in and around the commercial centre of Narre Warren, and on major roads that provide

better access for police vehicles. There is also scope to consider how other divisional resources and the divisional headquarters could be accommodated at the new Narre Warren station - including co-locating Crime Investigation, Crime Scene, Intelligence and Highway Patrol units as well as Police Custody Officers and Transit PSOs. Construction of the new station is due for completion in 2022. "Only Labor will build a new 24 hour, state-

IN BRIEF

$575k for school Fountain Gate Secondary College in Narre Warren could have a new Science Technology Engineering and Maths (STEM) Learning Centre and two new school buses if the Liberals are elected at the state election. The Liberals will contribute over $575,000. With over 1000 students enrolled at the college, this grant will provide modern, updated technology and facilities to the students who can fully explore their interest in STEM subjects. "Luke Donnellan has been the absent MP for 16 years, choosing to ignore the electorate he represents and has done very little to sup-

port schools in all that time - Narre Warren North deserves better," Liberal candidate for Narre Warren North Vikki Fitzgerald said. "Fountain Gate Secondary College has continued to cater for their students' diverse academic and individual learning needs despite this lack of support." Ms Fitzgerald said this commitments means that the college will be able to cater for future growth and provide even better educational opportunities for local students, including transportation to sporting competitions and other educational excursions, at minimal cost to already struggling families.

Liberal candidate for Narre Warren North Vikki Fitzgerald announced that Fountain Gate Secondary College in Narre Warren could have a new Science Technology Engineering and Maths (STEM) Learning Centre and two new school buses if the Liberals are elected at the state election.

2

The red poppy is the a symbol of remembrance. This tradition has its origins during the First World War and inspired by the fields of poppies that grew in the battleravaged fields of the Western Front.

3

Anyone seen Tony? Does anybody living in Berwick know the whereabouts of my long-time friend Tony Rafferty? For years we had coffee together at Fountain Gate shops. At Christmas time we would exchange Christmas cards, but since last Christmas I have never seen him. He just disappeared. In March just gone he rang to see you soon and that was it. Nothing since. Last time I saw Tony was at Fountain Gate just before last Christmas and he told me he was thinking of giving up the car due to his eyes. Maybe that’s why I never see him. I have also looked in Bunjil Place Library because Tony was a keen library person. Tony would now be around 78. I am 82 but I don’t know his address in Berwick. So wherever you are Tony, I hope you are well and maybe contact us. Best wishes from your friend and coffee mate, Derek Gardner, Hampton Park.

Warren Driscoll: Can't get there quicker because rail gates are down on Clyde Road. Mark Mathews: $2 million to build it... The other $32 million in to their mates... Rip off. Ric Stewart: Where is the money coming from with all these promises? Capital re-evaluation or other stupid term Dan has come up with which really means increased taxes? Bridge of heroes

Rebuilding lives to help

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A part-time World War II militia unit who went beyond the call of duty in New Guinea will be permanently honoured at a footbridge across Monash Freeway at Narre Warren. The bridge at Prospect Hill Drive will be named the Gippsland Regiment Bridge as part of a ceremony on Remembrance Day, 11 November. The event will include veterans and family from the Gippsland Regiment - otherwise known as the 52nd Batallion. Organiser Kevin Walsh says it is fitting to recognise the regiment - a group that was formed and based in the Dandenong district. The original Battalion fought in the famous battle of Villers-Bretonneux on Anzac Day in 1918. In World War II, the Regiment’s members who were the equivalent of a part-time Army Reserve were called up to fight in desperate circumstances. While the first-choice soldiers were engaged in Europe, the regiment was deployed to New Guinea to defend Australia from a Japanese onslaught . “These guys served the community and were from the community,” Mr Walsh said. “They came to the aid of the community in its hour of need.” On the regiment’s return in 1944, its bravery was highlighted by the then-Army Minister Francis Forde. “These men have done all that has abeen asked of them,” Mr Forde said. “They have been asked to do more than we could rightfully expect.” A former Dandenong mayor and retired army major, Mr Walsh has included an array of community groups at the ceremony. Attendees include 97-year-old regiment veteran Wally Whitmore, as well as a parade of

By Jessica Anstice Hampton Park's Korey Abrahams has recently set up a project called 'Taken for Granted', a foundation to offer support to those suffering through tough times, such as homelessness. Mr Abrahams works in Dandenong and often sees people begging for money and always feels the need to help out. "On this particular day the response I got from this man who I simply gave around $10 and some coins to was amazing. He was so grateful for such a small donation," he said. "It looked like I had just saved his life and that inspired me to start this movement. "As someone who has been through my own hard time with finances I may not have been homeless but have felt the disadvantages of having no money, I feel it is important to help those in need if you have the power to do so." Mr Abrahams and his team have received almost $600 in donations since starting but are still long way from their target of $5000. "Our goal is to use all the proceeds to make care packages that can go to the people in need, filled with things they can really use such as clothing, bottled water, basic toiletries as well as can foods that they can store and pop up tents," Mr Abrahams said.

Kevin Walsh has organised a permanent tribute to the Gippsland Regiment. 179545 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS defence force cadets. Indigenous elder and Vietnam veteran Graham Atkinson, Japan’s Consul-General Kazuyoshi Matsunaga, Colonel Mike Kalms of the 4th Brigade, and the mayors of Greater Dandenong and Casey will be part of the presentation. There will be a flyover by Peninsula Aero Club, a performance by With One Voice Choir and a Remembrance Day service that commemorates the end of World War I. The ceremony is at Prospect Hill Road bridge, Narre Warren on 11 November, from 1pm. Due to limited parking, patrons are advised to park and take a free shuttle bus from Max Pawsey Reserve, off Raven Crescent, Narre Warren. Buses run from 12.30pm.

Kevin Walsh lays a wreath for the 52nd Battalion during a commemoration of the Battle of VillersBretonneux in France on Anzac Day, 2018.

Community service granted $10,000 from Westpac By Jessica Anstice Casey North Community Information and Support Service, has been awarded a $10,000 grant through Westpac Foundation's Community Grants program. The grant will help fund support programs for disadvantaged and vulnerable groups experiencing various levels of crisis in Casey. "The grant will be directed to the Keeping it Together program which helps women

learn the skills required to develop and sustain healthy relationships," program manager Julie Leonidas said. "Last year, the Westpac Foundation grant enabled us to offer the program to residents of Frankston and this year we are thrilled that we can now offer it to dedicated groups in the Shire of Cardinia, and the Cities of Casey and Frankston, which report some of the highest incidences of family and relationship breakdown in Victoria."

Plan for new bus routes Two brand-new bus services will be delivered to Clyde and Berwick by the Labor State Government. Member for Eastern Victoria Region Daniel Mulino MP announced an $8 million investment over four years to plan and deliver services from Clyde to Berwick and Clyde North to Berwick. There will be more frequent services along Clyde Road, making it easier for residents to access the services and places they need. The new Clyde North to Berwick route will operate from Grices Road west along to Clyde Road, and then north up Clyde Road towards Berwick station.

The new Clyde to Berwick route will travel along Clyde Road from Clyde to Berwick. Both routes will provide easy access to the local shopping precinct and Berwick station, while linking with other services to get passengers to Monash University, Berwick Campus and Chisholm TAFE in Berwick. The new services are funded through the Growth Areas Infrastructure Contribution Fund, which provides funding for infrastructure in Melbourne's growing outer suburbs, ensuring health, education, public transport and other services grow as these communities do.

Clyde North's newest swimming pool got the tick of approval from a championship swimmer this week. Tooradin local and Australian Olympic swimmer Josh Beaver made the trip to Kingswim's newest centre at Clyde North, which is set to open in January 2019. Josh said the centre was shaping up to be a state-of-the-art facility and would be a fantastic and much-needed addition to the local community. "I remember growing up really enjoying swimming at my local lessons. That's where my journey started and it's great to see even more children being given the same opportunities as I had as a kid," he said. "It's exciting to think the next generation Australian champions could come out of Clyde North!" Kingswim Business and Strategy Manager Craig Dowsing said that while its centres can provide children with the pathway to become professional swimmers, Kingswim is most excited to bring swim and water safety skills to the area. "We're especially eager to start lessons in Clyde North as our latest research uncovered the incredible effect childhood swimming lessons have had on Aussies' abilities," Craig said. A recent national survey commissioned by Kingswim revealed 51 per cent of Australian adults can't swim 50 metres or more without stopping. However, the survey revealed younger demographics had a much higher swimming ability, which correlated to the swimming lessons they received as children. Close to half of 18 to 24-year-olds in the survey had swimming lessons through three or more channels as children (e.g. at home/

"I love your musicality in the staging and in the accents. It worked really well for me," Mr Prignano said after the students performed. Mr Rogers-Smith added, "Snaps for you! It's very rare that this happens but I understood the Jungle of Nool. You had such good diction." In the lead up to the event, Casey resident Emily Franklin was selected to join various other students from all around Australia to work on a pilot of Sister Act JR. Emily was selected to play Mother Superior and after the presentation Lucy Durack commented on Emily's performance saying "You're amazing, and just don't forget that!".

Skills for the future By Jessica Anstice The Ready Set Work Cafe Operations program provides practical skills training to people generally disengaged with education - with the aim of developing employability skills and improving literacy and language skills required for employment. The program is run by Jesuit Community College (part of Jesuit Social Services) and is open to young people not enrolled in mainstream education such as secondary school, VCAL or TAFE. Students are aged between 16 and 25. Students showed their skills off on a com-

mercial expresso machine with visits to local cafes and coffee roasteries. Member for Narre Warren North Luke Donnellan visited the students at Narre Warren Bowls Club on Wednesday, 31 October. Participant Zayne made Mr Donnellan a coffee with the skills he has picked up as part of the program. Mr Donnellan spoke to the class about his experiences looking for work as a young person, and the importance of working and contributing to society. The participants all really enjoyed his visit and meeting him. Participant Emily said, "At first I didn't

know what I wanted to do for a job, but this course has made me want to find a job in a cafe or hospitality. "It's also helped me to learn more about resumes and interviews. Once I graduate I'm looking to find part time or casual work in a cafe - that would be great." Upon successful completion of the course young people gain accreditations in several areas, practical skills and knowledge for working in the hospitality industry, improved job readiness and a career pathway to employment or further education and training. The participants graduate from the course next week.

GROW BUSINESS … Casey Cardinia Region

New jobs come up apples With assistance from the State Government, Montague, an Australian fresh produce company, will establish a new state-of-the-art packing and export distribution centre in Narre Warren North, creating 25 new local jobs. The $26 million project has been made possible with assistance from the government's Food Source Victoria program. The 18,000 sqm facility will provide end-toend export logistics services. Construction of the facility is expected to commence in early 2019 with completion anticipated by late 2020. “Montague is a proud Victorian brand and the Victorian Government is backing its $26 million project to meet growing demand from export markets,” member for Narre Warren North Luke Donnellan said. “This project will create 25 jobs in Narre Warren North and deliver economic benefits to growers right across regional Victoria.” Montague is a family owned business and a major Australian grower, wholesaler and exporter of apples, pears and stone fruit. “The introduction of the new production and distribution facility will introduce Australian first packing and storage technologies for the fruit packing industry,” Montague business development general manager Rowan Little said. “We are thrilled to have support from the Food Source Victoria program, our network of growers and distributor partners.” The Narre Warren North facility will provide the production and distribution infrastructure required to significantly increase the Montague Group’s export capabilities. The export distribution centre will manage export logistics services including packing, palletising, pre-cooling, inspections, docu-

mentation, container loading and freight forwarding. Montague and its grower network have planted approximately 1.5 million fruit trees to meet export demand from Asia, representing a 16 per cent increase in the total stock of fruit trees in Victoria. This project will allow Montague to double its packing capacity and dramatically increase its annual export sales, bringing economic benefits back to its growers in regional Victoria. The establishment of the export distribution centre is supported by regional fruit growers and packers along the agri-food supply chain, who will work together to build stronger agri-food businesses. The government’s Food Source Victoria program supports producers and businesses working in partnership to develop products that take the state’s superb produce to the next level, creating new jobs and growing exports. “Montague are proud to announce the first of a three stage development of a state of the art production and distribution facility in Narre Warren North, Victoria,” Montague supply chain manager Andrew Montague said. “The development will provide benefits for local and regional growers throughout Victoria, creating an additional 25 permanent jobs locally. An outcome we are very proud of.” Montague leads a value chain alliance with 45 apple and stone fruit growers located across Gippsland, Goulburn Valley, Harcourt, Mornington Peninsula, Swan Hill and Yarra Valley who will supply the export distribution centre. The project will create 13 regional jobs within Montague’s key partner growers, delivering broad economic benefits to regional communities.

Jobs growth challanges for booming region tor Rob Darby, GBS Recruitment has steadily grown across Gippsland and recently opened an office in Pakenham. Mr Dawson said opening an office to service the Casey Cardinia Region as well as the wider South East metropolitan area was a natural progression for GBS, which has a diverse spread of clients across private businesses, industrial, corporate and government sectors looking for the best permanent, temporary, labour hire, and senior executive staff. He said the GBS directors believe the region has a strong employment profile with job numbers expected to grow in coming years. Retail is the region’s largest employer generating 16,871 jobs in 2016/17, followed by 12404200-ACM46-18

As at June 30 2017 there were 106,403 jobs located in the Casey Cardinia Region, a 6 per cent increase on the year before. With a surging population, the region is continuing to attract new business, from manufacturing and retail to health and education providers right through to sole operators working from home. Finding the right employees is one of the biggest challenges facing all organisations, as Sales and Strategy Director at GBS Recruitment Michael Dawson well knows. The business was started 24 years ago in Warragul, before moving to Traralgon, by founder and current director Juli Halton. Currently led by General Manager and Direc-

health care and social assistance, education and trade. The goods related sector accounts for 43 per cent of employment in the Casey Cardinia Region. Household services account for 39.8 per cent, business services 10.8 per cent, agriculture forestry and fishing 3 per cent and public administration and safety 3 per cent. The region has more female workers at 52.7 per cent, compared to 47.3 per cent of males. Of those 54.2 per cent work full time and 43.7 per cent work part time, while 31 per cent were born overseas. The majority are aged between 25 and 54. Mr Dawson said he expected demand for skilled labour to grow across IT, manufacturing, engineering and construction, health and education. “I think we will find high needs across all markets. I expect industrial to be quite strong, because of our location here in the South East which has a strong manufacturing base. I am expecting commercial roles in the health services and government sectors to be strong as well. “I have no doubt automation and online technology will move quickly in terms of expansion over the next few years. The job shift will continue quite rapidly whereby a lot of manual tasks will continue to disappear, but new jobs will come in the ICT and IT areas, particularly in leading and servicing the automations and technical requirements of these systems.“ He pinpointed health care and education as other growth areas, while agriculture and its supply chain will definitely continue to be an important part of the region’s employment mix. GBS also provides casual teachers to the education sector and Mr Dawson said demand was growing strongly for this service across both primary and secondary schools for qualified CRT teachers.

Sales and Strategy Director Michael Dawson (right) and Conal Tatt in the new GBS Pakenham office. 186934 He said building activity and infrastructure projects would keep demand high for engineers and trades people. Mr Dawson said research has shown approximately 70 per cent of new business appointments that fail, do so because companies fall into the trap of hiring people who have a poor cultural fit with the organisation. “Expert advice is crucial to make sure the fit is right for both the employer and employee. Sound recruitment and the critical processes required can make the difference between business success and failure, this is something GBS Recruitment is exceptionally good at,“ he said. “We want businesses across the region to succeed by getting the right people for the right jobs.“ The GBS website has options for registering for work or for loading vacancies should your business need help with employing staff across their three divisions - Commercial (White Collar), Industrial (Blue Collar) and Education www.gbsrecruitment.com.au - Statistics for this story were obtained from idcommunity demographic resources

Bid takes shape By Russell Bennett As the bid to bring an A-League and W-League club to the south-east of Victoria continues to take shape, Team 11 Pty Ltd has unveiled more of the shareholders who have combined to turn this football dream into a reality. Joining major shareholder Gerry Ryan and Team 11's interim chairman Ghadir Razuki as investors are prominent south east businesses, including RMBL Investments, Intrapac Property and Pellicano Group. Also in the mix is a group of young and passionate local business owners and professionals - many from the local football scene - who have established a consortium to invest into Team 11. The group largely consists of business owners and professionals who have grown up in the region and played competitively in FFV state leagues. They are excited by the prospect of an A-League club growing the game for the younger generation in the south east, with many of their kids playing for local clubs in the region. The group is headed by Tony Selak and Peter Vlachos, who both played junior football locally, and has representation on Team 11's board through Dandenong-born Selak. This group is uniquely positioned to give guidance on grassroots matters, including but not limited to match day experience, interaction with families and local football clubs. The businesses and businessmen which have come together include: Selak (Ace Body Corporate Management); Vlachos (finance professional); Gavin Hately, Ivan Sember (Elite Shopfitting Australia); Alan Macinkovic, Ivica Klarica (Purple Hills Painting); Blazincic fam-

Member of the local consortium, Peter Vlachos spoke of his excitement at the prospect of having an A-League and W-League team practically right on his back door. "I grew up in the south-east and played football from a young age," he said. "I spent most of my playing days at Bentleigh Greens, but I also played at Chel-

sea, Clayton Inter and Sandringham. To be involved with something like Team 11 excites me greatly. "Having travelled around Europe and seen the youth and development programs available in those countries, I've realised that we need to create greater opportunities and better pathways here in Australia. This club, if given a licence, is our chance to grow grassroots football and create a better future for the talented kids in south-east Victoria. "The fact that I am a father of two young boys makes me even more passionate about this project."

Beaconsfield delivers an all-time thumping By Hayley Wildes

McGrath's star has risen to new heights By Russell Bennett Star Essendon midfielder Andrew McGrath headed along to the Berwick Little Athletics recently to watch some of the young sporting stars of tomorrow go through their paces. McGrath, the first overall pick in the 2016 national draft, was an elite junior athlete winning the Australian national under-14 high jump competition in 2011, the Victorian state heptathlon and national 200-metre hurdles events at under-15 level in 2012, and the under-17 400-metre hurdles in 2014. But the now 20-year-old McGrath, who played in the TAC Cup with the Sandringham Dragons, chose to focus on his footy. He won the NAB Rising Star Award, the Ron Evans Medal, after a super-impressive debut season for the Bombers in 2017 in which he also won the AFL Players Association's Best berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au

100-metre sprint and the Berwick youngsters were amazed that he could jump two metres in the high jump and over six metres in the long jump, as well as run the 400-metres in under 49 seconds. He spent most of the morning chatting to the athletes about all things athletics and football, as well as signing for autographs and posing for photos. Berwick Little Athletics has just experienced its highest growth for a number of years, following an influx of new members. New members are welcome to come along and trial twice before deciding whether or not they'd like to join and, unlike many other sports, can join at any stage throughout the season. For as long as cricket has been played, monster wins - and losses - have been part and parcel of the game. But on Saturday afternoon at Coomoora Reserve, Beaconsfield dealt an alltime thumping to Coomoora. In the Dandenong District Cricket Association Turf 3 match-up, Coomoora batted first but only lasted a measly 15 overs as the Tigers were ruthless with the ball. The dynamic pairing of Matt Golding (5/6) and Alex Roberts (4/5) produced figures that require a double-take. They were irresistible as their consistent and deadly line and length was too much for Coomoora's batsmen. Not only did the pair take plenty of wickets, their efficiency was off the charts too as they simply didn't bowl a bad delivery. With Roberts and Golding ripping through the batting line-up, the Roos were dismissed for just 20 runs as nine batsmen failed to make more than two runs. "Their captain, Lance Baptist - we played against him last year and he's a good player he came in at five and we thought if we can get him out early, then who knows what can happen," Matt Golding said of the stunning result. "I think we got him out second ball and from then, they just kept missing the straight balls. We hit the stumps a lot and and it was just one of those things that within the blink of eye we'd bowled them out." In response, the Tigers posted a total of 1/24 in five overs to claim the resounding win. In what would have to be one of the quickest games in recent memory, after kicking off at 1pm, it was all done and dusted by around 2:30 - and that includes a break between the innings. The win sees Beaconsfield remain on top of the ladder after three rounds, boasting three wins - all of which have come in convincing fashion. "We've got a really, really good bunch - I think we've got maybe four players from last year, but all the new guys who have come in have really gelled together and there's a really good vibe around the club," Golding said.

Ben’s journey to the top By Russell Bennett Ben Allen has a different perspective than most when it comes to 'the race that stops the nation'. This time last year, Pakenham jockey Allen now 19 - picked up the last-minute Melbourne Cup ride aboard Thomas Hobson after Joao Moreira was injured in a frightening fall earlier in the day. The teenage apprentice finished an impressive sixth - backing up the form he showed aboard Lord Fandango in finishing fourth in the Caulfield Cup last October. Allen, who regularly rides track work at Cranbourne, remembered 2017 Melbourne Cup day as if it was yesterday. "It's unreal - I was just happy to be riding on the day," he explained. "Jockeys from all over the world fly over for this meeting and I was just happy to be there, and it was just a fluke that I happened to be walking around at about 53.5 kilos, 53 on the day when unfortunately Joao had that fall (earlier in the day) and I was the only one who was going to be able to make the weight." Allen put his hand up to take the ride, and subsequently did everything he could to make weight for the race. "I was planning on watching the Cup up on the tower and then a few hours before then I was lucky enough to fluke the ride," he said. Allen is still looking forward to breaking through for his first Group 1 win, and he's showed plenty of super encouraging signs pointing to it not being too far away. He's had his setbacks - such as a fractured foot, a back injury, and even a battle with glandular fever, but he's put it all behind him now and the experiences he's gained have only served to make him a stronger rider. For a while, in fact, he'd forgotten just what it was like to ride at full strength - given he was

Ben Allen, pictured last year, recalled his experience in 'the race that stops the nation', and the Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS battles he's had since. 174985 riding with glandular fever, and picking up winners along the way. But that's all in the past now. "I'm getting good rides for big trainers and

I've been lucky enough to be put in some nice races," he said. "I'm just hoping to keep going on with that and hoping to be able to get my first Group 1

out of the way, but it is quite hard this time of year. "At the moment I've been lucky enough to be riding for Darren Weir and he gives me a lot of support and gives me a really good go so hopefully it won't be too long." The Group races he's won this Spring have him feeling particularly bullish about the future. "I've had a few placings in a couple of Group 1s - hopefully it's not too far off, but I'm just happy to be able to get good rides and be involved on the big days," he said. Allen spoke about the buzz and excitement that surrounds such iconic races as the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups. "As soon as you jump from the barriers, it's just deafening - especially the Melbourne Cup," he said. "As soon as the last horse heads in, the crowd is just crazy. It's hard to explain how loud it is. "It definitely helps to narrow your focus, but when you're out there you're pretty switched on with what you want to do and what your first plan is anyway. "Still, it's hard not to notice the crowd." Now, for Allen, he's trying to build on his experiences moving forward - and learn as much as he can from some of the more experienced jockeys he comes up against. "Just watching the international riders and how they ride these big races and how calm and patient they are - it's something you try and learn from to hopefully improve the way you ride," he said, adding that the top jockeys treat Group 1 races the same as any other race they're competing in. "Staying races are really all about timing and when you pick your run. It's knowing your horse and being able to ride your own race and not let the big occasion take over," he said.

By Russell Bennett and Hayley Wildes VICTORIAN PREMIER CRICKET Dandenong champion Brett Forsyth marked his 200th Victorian Premier Cricket match with a superb, unbeaten ton to put the Panthers in a strong position after day one against the Monash Tigers at Shepley Oval. After winning the toss and electing to bat, Forsyth and his great mate - skipper Tom Donnell (65) - set up the innings with a 124-run opening stand. And when Donnell fell, Forsyth took it upon himself to carry his bat and anchor the rest of the innings - all 357 minutes of it. One of the ultimate clubmen, Forsyth’s record at Dandenong is nothing short of remarkable - and he’s continued that strong form this season with 352 runs so far at a whopping average of 70.4 His 125 on Saturday - his 14th century for the Panthers - was testament to his leadership, determination, and rock-solid focus to play his role to the best of his ability for the club. Though he and Donnell were the side’s only batsmen to reach 30, the bulk of the damage inflicted on the Tigers had been done through their partnership. For Monash, leg-spinner Tom O’Connell toiled had for 30 overs to finish with the eventual figures of 4/88, while Fred Klaassen was the side’s other multiple wicket-taker with 2/71 from his 20 overs. Though the Tigers clearly have their work ahead of them on Saturday, it should be noted that at one stage on day one the Panthers slipped from 0/124 to 4/157. Casey-South Melbourne, meanwhile, is in a commanding position after day one of their clash against Camberwell. Having won the toss, the Swans elected to bat and despite opener Luke Wells falling for a duck and the team standing at 3/30 at one stage, an 89-run partnership between Jared Maxwell (67) and Michael Wallace (125) steadied the ship. Wallace, the club’s playing vice president, was in superb form and his electric yet composed innings featured 18 boundaries as he punished any slightly wayward deliveries.

Dandenong opener Brett Forsyth picked the perfect time to record his 14th century for the Pictures: ROB CAREW Panthers. 187072 After a strong partnership with Maxwell, Wallace then went to work with Devin Pollock (83) and the pair put on a mammoth 161-run stand before Maxwell was finally dismissed. At that point, the Swans were humming along at 6/286 and the team would eventually post an imposing total of 9/329 in 96 overs. For Camberwell, William Walker (5/44) was a constant threat and bowled extremely well in tough circumstances, while Andrew Fekete (4/112) was flying at the start of the innings, but struggled later in the day. MPCA - PROVINCIAL ROUND 4 (DAY TWO) After Mornington posted an imposing total of 8/276 off 80 overs last Saturday, day two commenced with Pearcedale at the crease needing plenty of runs. Pearcedale’s run chase got off to a slow start as they fell to 4/27 and they were unable to recover, despite the best efforts of Kaine Smith (49) and Harrison Capes (40 not out). Mornington’s Matt Foon (4/39) was too good as Pearcedale was dismissed for 182 runs in the 71st over. Langwarrin posted a commanding total of 9/295 last Saturday against Peninsula OB and defended their total well on day two. Despite strong top-order starts for Peninsula OB, they were dismissed for 211 in 59 overs as Langwarrin’s bowlers took key wickets when needed. In other matches, Mt Eliza (8/203) defended their total against Flinders (178), while Baxter (6/318) was unable to defend its commanding total against Sorrento (3/322). berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au

Bucks run riot over Hawks By Russell Bennett and Hayley Wildes

DDCA TURF 1 AND 2 REVIEW - ROUND 3 Buckley Ridges has continued its unbeaten start to the Dandenong District Cricket Association Turf 1 season after a clinical chase down of Hallam Kalora Park in Hallam. Batting first in the Round 3 one-dayer, the home side could only muster 8/155 from its 40 overs. Openers Ben Hillard (3) and Leigh Booth (4) both fell early and when Jaime Brohier (3) fell soon after the home side was sitting at a precarious 3/27. The task to set about rescuing the innings then fell on the shoulders of Jordan Hammond (66) and Ryan Hillard (36), who scored over 100 of their side’s runs just between the two of them. But there was only so much they could do, given their side’s shaky start. Buckley Ridges wasted absolutely no time in its reply, reaching 3/160 at the start of just the 25th over with the star opening combination of skipper David White (52) and DJ Watson (79) doing the bulk of the damage between them in their 141-run stand. Saturday marked the first dismissal of the season for South African First Class player White, 27, who has returns of 105 not out, 85 not out, and 52 in his first three hits for Buckley Ridges - all at a whopping average of 242 so far. Berwick, meanwhile, has toppled both of last season’s Turf 1 grand finalists in consecutive rounds. On Saturday the Bears proved too strong for Mordialloc at Ben Kavanagh Reserve. Batting first, the visitors reached a strong 7/214 from their 40 overs thanks to each of their top six batsman passing at least 20 - led by skipper Matt Chasemore with 57.

Jordan Hammond top-scored for the Hawks with 66 on Saturday. After losing opener Brendan Morris without scoring early in its reply, Mordialloc ultimately reached 8/187 from its 40 overs - led by Damith Mapa Ralalage with 39. Isaiah Jassal was the pick of the Berwick attack, finishing with 3/27 from his eight overs. Astonishingly, Mordialloc is now winless through its opening three games of the season. Springvale South (7/178) was too strong for St Mary’s (163) at Thomas Carroll Reserve. Batting first, the Bloods lost openers Michael Vandort (4) and Nathan King (25) early but recovered thanks to the steady hands of Steve Spoljaric (28), skipper Craig Slocombe (16), Malinga Bandara (34), and - most significantly - Tim Ford (52). Luke Davis (5/38) was stellar with the ball for St Mary’s, claiming his first five-wicket haul

of the season, while Ruwantha Kellepotha backed up his 5/31 in Round 2 with 2/30 from his eight overs. St Mary’s also lost both openers early in their reply, from which they also fought back from. But after the 68-run, third wicket stand between Kellepotha (50) and skipper Kaushalya Gajasinghe (48) they lost a steady stream of wickets to slide from 3/99 to be all out for 163. Jarryd Straker claimed 4/46 for the Bloods, while Jarrod Armitage (2/27) and Bandara (2/30) were the side’s other multiple wicket-takers. In the other game of the round, Heinz Southern Districts (6/209) had the better of North Dandenong (9/194) in a high-scoring clash at Lois Twohig Reserve. HSD star Michael Davis was again simply sensational with both bat and ball, top-scor-

ing with an unbeaten 90 before claiming 4/29 from his eight overs. TURF 2 Cranbourne’s batsmen failed to fire against St Brigid’s/St Louis at Casey Fields on Saturday and it cost them dearly. With opener Cameron Kelly (23) top-scoring, others fell cheaply and tallied a total of just 9/111. Patrick Jamieson (3/26) was dangerous for St Brigid’s/St Louis. In reply, the visitors reached the required runs in 35 overs as Liam Harris (44) batted strongly. Cameron Kelly (3/15) was the pick of Cranbourne’s bowlers. Narre Warren, meanwhile, was far too good for Dandenong West at Sweeney Reserve. After sending Dandenong West in to bat first, Narre Warren got straight to work as Ben Ingham (4/25) and James Elliott (3/26) were irresistible with the ball. Dandenong West was dismissed for just 125 runs in 31 overs. Narre Warren’s run chase was in total control as they claimed a four-wicket win. Dilusha Nanayakkara (35) and Zach Allen (28) helped the side post a total of 6/128. Narre North took the points against Dingley. With Dingley batting first, they posted a total of 6/155 as Corey Booth (66 not out) was the only batsmen to make inroads against the Narre North bowling attack. Narre North - led by a great unbeaten half century by Marshall Gray (58 not out) and keeper-batsman Josh Tonna (31) - chased down the required runs in the 37th over. Meanwhile, Narre South demolished Parkmore. Narre South - led by significant contributions from Scott Phillips (79), Ashan Wijayakumara (78) and Joe Thomas (64) - posted an imposing total of 7/277. Parkmore was never in the hunt as Muhammad Ghaffar (4/24) and Scott Phillips (3/8) were simply ruthless. The Pirates were dismissed for just 86 runs in the 25th over.

Cranbourne’s Side 1 Division 2 skip Frank Byrne with Neil ‘Buddy’ Drummond, John McKenna and Graeme Wood.

Cranbourne defeats old rival Fighting with real spirit, Cranbourne had to dig deep to reduce a 10-shot tea break deficit into a five-shot victory on home turf last Saturday, while the ladies' Division 1 side also played at home last Tuesday, turning an eightshot deficit into a drawn game against powerhouse side Clayton. Side 1 Division 2 Always a highly anticipated encounter, playing old rival Berwick at home and winning is certainly high on Cranbourne's wish list agenda. At the beginning of the game Barry, 'The General', reminded new members about the long history of the two clubs and how important it was to win at home against Berwick. He showed them the way with some outstanding bowls, supported by his team mate Peter Elgar, winning by five shots. But it was skip Sue Hudson and her crew of Daniel Byrnes, Joe Byrne and Maree Taylor who were the stars - winning by 14 shots. Cranbourne chief John McKenna was exhausted after the game but went on to say: "We really did have to dig deep after the tea break but every rink responded well and it was very pleasing that we all got the job done. Picking up 14 points and winning by five shots against Berwick was simply marvellous." Perhaps it was also an extra incentive to win with two father-son combinations playing on the day with Joe Byrne and his son Frank, and Terry Byrnes and his son Daniel. Cranbourne 82 (14 points) defeated Berwick 77. Cranbourne Ladies Division 1 The Clayton ladies came to Cranbourne with

a strong line-up of players and at the lunch break, leading by eight shots, they were expecting to run away with the game. But it wasn't to be. The Cranbourne ladies were more than up for the fight and all rinks rallied to pull off an exciting tied game. Skip Kath Dudink and her crew of Cheryl Wright, Helen Witherden and Sandra Mueller went on to win with a margin of seven shots, which was a great result - finishing off a great competitive day. Cranbourne Ladies 57 (9 points) drew with Clayton 57. Side 2 Division 3 Cranbourne started a little flat against Pakenham at home, which was a bit of a surprise after recent good form, and was unable to turn it around - going down by 24 shots. Skip Peter Colthup and his team of Gary Farrington, Shane Morrison and David Wilson got home by three shots. Cranbourne 67 (4 points) lost to Pakenham 91. Side 3 Division 5 It was a similar result against Dandenong Club on a very tricky, wind-affected green - going down by 37 shots. The best rink was again that of skip Hans Worstelling, with his crew of Sue Mueller, Isobel Partington, and Frank Coulter who all bowled well with five shots up. Cranbourne 62 (2 points) lost to Dandenong Club 93 Side 4 Division 7 Skip John Kent and his crew of Kath Dudink, Olive Stanley and Graeme Robinson won by

Side 5 Six a side Skip Mick Feeley and his team members Bryan Eagle and Alan Agullana had a good day, winning by 24 shots - which contributed to the sixshot victory against Black Rock.
