THIS WEEK WE’RE TALKING ABOUT…
TRI INSPIRES FROM CHAIR BY MARGARET MACCOLL Rohan McDonald, 11, slipped from his wheelchair to the starters line in the sand in the Tingirana Special Triathlon on Saturday with his eyes set firmly on the swim ahead. His buddy Little Jo Power followed suit and shoulder to shoulder they crawled the distance to Noosa River to swim the first stage of the race. Rohan's father Justin was waiting for him as he headed from the water to his handpowered bicycle. "Run with me," he called to his dad. But after 200m Justin couldn't keep up. Rohan who is a bilateral lower leg amputee sped off to complete the 3km distance and
Justin just waited his return. The third stage hit a snag when Rohan's three-wheel chair lost its front wheel which allows him to traverse uneven ground. But Justin pushed from behind to the finish line with Rohan already planning for next year's tri. "He impressed me hugely," Justin said. "He's just such an inspiration." Rohan has been a member of Seahorse Nippers for several years. When Little Jo who volunteers with the group heard Rohan was going to line up in the tri she jumped on board to help. This year boasted the largest contingent in the TIngirana Special Triathlon with about 200 entrants including
Rohan McDonald and Little Jo Power at the Tingirana Special Tri. 23 from Sunshine Butterflies Disability Support Service lining up, each with a buddy beside them. ●
TRIATHLON IS A CONTINUING SUCCESS By 5am on Sunday Hastings Street was shut to traffic and swarming with lycra clad and numbered athletes frantic to grab a coffee, pump up their bike tyres or store their belongings before the Noosa Triathlon races commenced at 6.15am with the horn sounded by Olympic legend Dawn Fraser. Crowds rushed to the beach for the beginning of the annual exodus into the sea for the 1.5km swim and the elite men took the lead. But with 8000 competitors the start time for some wasn't to be for hours. People filled the beach and surrounding cafes as they waited their turn or watched earlier competitors as they swapped bathing cap for bike helmets and headed out on their 40km ride before the switchover to their 10km run. For some first time competitors like Emma Pollard of Tewantin it was a nervous wait. Emma was one of a group of mothers who decided to take on the tri when they
Sea of swimmers. were sitting around having a drink one night . "I had to learn to ride a road bike," Emma said. "I had to learn to swim in the ocean. It was scary. Every time I saw a dolphin I thought shark." Others were annual pilgrims. The Australian Defence Force brought representatives from each state to compete. Helicopter pilot Major Cameron Stephenson organised the contingent of 58 personnel and said they came from all ranks and included Rear Admiral Adam Grunsell, Able Seaman Mark Daniels who recently

competed in the Invictus Games in Sydney and professional triathlete Brayden Tucker of the 9th Battalion Royal Queensland Regiment. Many competitors entered to raise money for a cause. This year the Smiling for Smiddy team numbered 300 and aimed to raise $400,000 for cancer research. Each year the team gathers in honour of Adam Smiddy, who died from melanoma in 2006 aged 26. The University of the Sunshine Coast had a research team on hand and took advantage of the queue at the toilets. The group led by Associate Professor Geoff Lovell were asking participants their mood in the lead up to the event in a study to determine if mood plays a part in performance. The Noosa Triathlon Multi Sport Festival was hailed a great success and the Noosa Triathlon event recording a record win with Ashleigh Gentle making it six wins in a row while the mens event was claimed by three time winner Aaron Royle. ●
BACKPACKERS MOVE INTO NOOSAVILLE BY MARGARET MACCOLL Bounce Hostel Noosa has submitted an application to build a 122-bed hostel in 14-16 Mary Street, Noosaville, with Council officers recommending the development be approved under a string of conditions. The backpackers proposal includes four x two storey pavillions housing 25 units with a mix of two, four, six and eight beds, communal kitchen, dining, lounge, male and female toilets, a pool, spa, deck and
cafe, and basement car park. Council's conditions include a height level of no more than 8.8m, acoustic fences and windows and limitations on the use of the pool and cafe to 7pm and the restriction of amplified music to 10pm. The development is proposed for the site currently occupied by Smartpups Op Shop and Classic Malibu Surfboards. The proposal will be discussed at this month's council meetiings. ●

IN SEARCH OF BLIND LOVE Noosa comedian Kevin Fraser tried his luck on Network Ten’s Blind Date on Monday and was pretty happy with the outcome. “The experience was great, we had a heap of fun and the date was actually very successful,“ he said. Finding the right partner can be a challenge and working odd hours doesn’t help. “In my line of work it can prove difficult to find a genuine partner in the Noosa National Park! Gets a bit quiet out there,“ he said Being the chooser on the show Kevin said he was under the pump to try and pick the right date. Kevin chose contestant three because she made him laugh. "She was genuine and seemed a bit carefree and it was a bonus that she is gorgeous," he said. The couple were flown to Jamala Wildlife Reserve in Canberra for a bit of an African experience on their date where they fed lions and stroked a cheetah. "Such a fantastic date," he said. "It was very true to my South African heritage so I managed to hold it all together with such intimidating animals, except when they brought out the pythons. I can’t handle snakes." The pair have had a couple of dates since which have "gone smooth" and its slow and steady for their long distance relationship with his date in Melbourne. ●

COVER STORY Xxxxxxxx
THE ART OF DRESSING BY HOLLIE HARRIS hen we think about style and fashion, we think Melbourne, we think Italy, we think designers. Here on the Coast, we have a thongs-on-the-weekend rule and work days rarely mean a tie or heels - we are just more casual here. That is, unless you're local fashionista Lucia Cimino, who has Melbourne, Italy and designers in her blood. Recently winning the title of the Most Stylish on the Sunshine Coast at the Sunshine Coast Fashion Festival, Italian born Lucia's flirtation with fashion began as a young child growing up in Melbourne. "My Mumma and l loved fabrics! Occasionally, she would buy a copy of Vogue Child and we would flick through the pages together 'ooohing' and 'ahhhing' over the images of beautiful kids clothing," Lucia says. "One of my most memorable and
W
absolutely favourite dresses was off the front cover of Vogue Child. A royal blue velvet shift dress with white lace collar and cuffs. "I loved it so much that Mum went out and found the Royal Blue velvet and the beautiful white lace and she made me that dress. It made me feel magical and it was just like the one on the cover," she says. And a life-long love of fashion was born. Having a garment made specifically for her body, made to measure, and being involved in the designing and making process ignited a passion she would experiment with in the years to come. "Mum was such a creative soul that we get to play around with making stuff and experimenting. Sometimes things worked out and sometimes they didn't, but we just kept going and finding ways to make things work." Experimenting with different looks and styles as l could, this Noosa stylist was influenced by the music she was listening to.
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Cocteau Twins and The Cure in those early Alternative Punk days, inspired a Gothic/Hippy look that she expressed her creative side with. Huntingdale Tech in Melbourne was a perfect uniform-free outlet for this budding fashionista to rock out her creations. "I would walk to classes in my long black slip dress with stilettos on. I felt utterly inspired. There were lots of punks and alternative kids at that school so it really didn't cause a stir." Growing in confidence with some travel behind her, Lucia's career in fashion was about to begin in Fitzroy. With Brunswick Street being a mecca for alternative fashion and live music, she came across a position at Melbourne's iconic and most glamorous Bridal boutique, Mariana Hardwick. "Could l really work there? Me a Hippie/ goth/gypsy girl from the suburbs? I decided l would give it my best shot. I dressed up
and got classy!" Lucia convinced the boutique to hire her and she immersed in the dreamy world of Bridal Couture for a while. "I learnt so much about styling for various body shapes and skin colour. I learnt the true art of styling with professional knowledge, care, sensibility and compassion for each woman l dressed." "Mariana was a massive inspiration and influenced me greatly. She encouraged me to keep dressing in my now classic vintage style and had little lipstick cases delivered to all my fellow stylists so that would have red lippy on hand, just like me. That was a huge compliment," Lucia says. Over the years, Lucia worked for several other Australian Fashion Designers and further added to her skills with layering techniques, really focusing on dressing for body shape as well as learning the craft of Yoga, becoming a certified instructor.

"I found that the sense of calm and wellbeing l developed as a Yoga practitioner, helped me to connect with the women l was styling on a deeper level. Yoga has been an invaluable asset on my life path." These days, Lucia can be found among the beautiful fashion at Augustine in Noosa as well as styling our local ladies using her tried and tested tips. LUCIAS TOP STYLING TIPS · CHOOSE A STYLE THAT YOU LOVE THE MOST Not every day, but if you want to look special and make a statement, you will automatically know which style is most you and then you are bound to look fabulous. · DRESS FOR BODY SHAPE Particularly with the cut of the garment. Do an online search for body shapes and what is considered the most flattering cut for your shape. · COLOURS Choose colours that make you look healthy rather than dull. Look at eye, hair and skin colour and choose colours to suit. · ACCESSORIES Belts, bags and shoes will entirely change an outfit. Statement earnings or a necklace will also make a dress look different every time. · ITS NOT ABOUT MONEY You don't have to spend huge amounts of money to look good. Basic pieces can be made glamorous with accessories. Some Op shops have designer garments with tags still on them. I find many! Look carefully, take your time and you are sure to find a treasure. · STATEMENTS ITEMS Stand out pieces that you can throw on that will work with anything are invaluable. Choose ones that will not date and you will always love like a Leopard print longline jacket or amazing black leather jacket. If you find that perfect dress that flatters you in all the right places, keep looking for that particular cut in different colours or prints. "I love vintage glamour and dressing up as often as possible. Sometimes l love rock 'n' roll, which is a casual look that l feel best in. Big jewels and headpieces are my go-to for going out. "l may be seen at school drop off, occasionally with fascinator flapping in the wind! I love the idea of a ballgown and bare feet, whilst walking through a field, which is how l see myself in 10 years time." I get the idea Lucia may be a bit of a romantic. She talks about how Dolce and Gabana make her feel so happy. The authenticity of their classic Italian style mixed with modern components inspire her style today.
"l recently went to the Dior Exhibition held in Melbourne and l was completely enthralled with the craftsmanship and beauty of every piece on display. "Dita Von Teese always looks incredible in her vintage glamour style. There is a simplicity in the cut of the dress or skirt she chooses that is always fresh, yet alluring." This mum of two truly is a dreamer, a lover of life and fashion. She lives to express the internal feelings of joy and passion that she feels inside, to the world. "I truly believe that this is what the art of dress is ultimately about. An internal feeling expressed externally. "Dress up for life" is my motto." Her eye for style hasn't gone un-noticed. Recently nominated for the Sunshine Coast style awards in the Most Stylish on the Coast category, Lucia was grounded and humbled. "l knew it would not alter how I was feeling about myself, but boost me further into my quest to be the best l can be. I have worked a lot on my relationship with myself this year. Lucia was announced as the winner at the Sunshine Coast Fashion Festival a couple of weeks ago. "In loving my eccentric and passionate self whole-heartedly, l believe that the wonderful gift of Most Stylish on the Sunshine Coast came with a wink of encouragement and acknowledgement from the universe telling me "You are all that you believe yourself to be. Shine and keep going girl! "We were judged on our unique sense of style and how we walked with that in our everyday lives. Jacinta Richmond, organiser of Sunshine Coast Fashion Festival and Design/Style Awards has an amazing ability to find individuals who dress creatively and with style on this big Sunshine Coast of ours. She is a fabulous human being." "l don't think fashion is as important to me as dressing - dressing for life. "I wish to bring joy to others through my expression and through the art of dress. l wish to inspire others to find their way of expressing who they are." I asked the beautiful stylist what is a common dressing mistake? "I would definitely say being inauthentic to who you are is where it all falls down. If you are uncomfortable in what you are wearing, it shows and therefore you can never be truly confident," she says. Lucia will be conducting fun and fabulous Styling Workshops in the new year. NEWS
FROM FIRE TRAUMA TO TRIUMPH BY HOLLIE HARRIS View Restaurant chef Matt Golinski and burn survivors and KIDS Foundation ambassadors Matthew Thiele and Tom Moore sat down last Thursday for a chat about survival, operations, the Noosa Tri and child safety. Matt's story of survival and triumph has been public knowledge for some time and it was quite a thrill for local teenager Tom Moore, who was burnt in a house fire at the age of 3, enduring over 150 surgeries, to meet him in person. After life-long pain in his right leg, the recommended treatment is an expensive amputation and prosthetic. Tom's story inspired the KIDS Foundations to embark on a mission to raise funds for an operation to improve Tom's life and were able to raise over $45,000. And so, after a long and painful journey, Tom is booked in this week to undergo a life-changing surgery - an osseo-integration. The procedure involves amputation below the knee, placing a titanium rod inside his tibia so that a prosthetic leg will click onto the rod. "After being in pain for so many years, I am so excited to try this," Tom said. "It's time." 19-year-old Mathew Thiele was trapped in a car fire when he was three. He sustained full thickness burns to just over 30 percent of his body. The most severe burns were to his face, head and hands. Mathew was in hospital for three and a half months and his prognosis was not good. This weekend, he
Matt Golinski with Mathew Thiele, KIDS Founder and Director Dr Susie O'Neill and Tom Moore at View Restaurant last week. proudly crossed the finish line of the Noosa Triathlon. Injury is still the leading cause of death in Australia. Each week in Australia, on average 35,000 children will attend a hospital emergency department, 1300 will be admitted, and five children will die from injury.
The KIDS Foundation are targeting 10,000 kinders across Australia with their safety program. They also host camps across the country for kids who have sustained injuries. The 2018 Noosa camp had over 100 attendees and plans are underway for the
2019 camp, which will coincide with the annual Dine-In-White fundraising dinner at View Restaurant, Peppers Resort and Spa. Learn more and keep in the loop on next year's events at www.kidsfoundation.org.au. Noosa Today wishes Tom Moore the best of luck for his surgery this week. â—?

SERIOUSLY COMPETITIVE PRICES AND QUALITY SYSTEMS ENSURE SUCCESS Tony and Susanne Cruise from Noosa Screens and Curtains offer products best suited for the harsh saline conditions of the coast. They have discovered that many interstate and city suppliers do not have components which are truly resilient against corrosion, which is so important for our climate here. “We manufacture most of our products in store,” Tony says. “Our manufacturing capability and use of quality products has driven the business from strength to strength,” he says. “By having our own internal manufacturing division, we can respond quickly to customer needs. “Now repairs can be undertaken in days, not weeks, and our extensive range of accessories allow us to customise jobs to suit almost any application. “We take pride in using our own installers to complete the job and we never sub-contract out like many others do, which cuts out any unnecessary hold-ups. You can deal with us directly, every time.” Their goal has always been to provide a top-quality product at the very best price, and by incorporating Home Point Window Furnishings into their brand they have extended their coverage to Caloundra in the south and Gympie to the north. To stay ahead of the game, Tony knows he needs to stay competitive with his pricing and will continue to offer the best pricing he possibly can. They have more than doubled their staff in the last 5 years, which Tony puts down to quality products, a loyal customer base and strong referrals.
“Customers can expect to find a warm welcome and an interactive environment where they are able to view the latest trends in window coverings, security and sun protection and remote-control motorization,” Tony says. “The team at Noosa Screens and Curtains will give sound advice and customers can be assured of receiving a highquality product, manufactured using our state-of-the-art technology.” The showroom has an extensive range of items including, blinds, awnings, curtains, security screens, fly screens and shutters. Check out their first-to-market zero gravity blinds, invented by an Aussie, which allow the user to operate without chains. As the weather heats up, customers are loving the European folding awning arm systems which are on special this month, including free motorisation. Noosa Screens and Curtains now offer a staggering 16-year warranty on their security screen systems - that’s an extra 6 years more than the typical warranty, simply because Tony knows it’s the best. “We believe this is the very best product available that is suited to our corrosive coastal environment,” Tony said. 12404645-SN46-18

NEWS SUCKING UP OCEAN PLASTIC
Andrea Huglin e-foiling in the Noosa river.
SURFING THE RIVER Want one of these? Who doesn't? Andrea Huglin took the family's electric hydrofoil surfboard for a spin around Noosa river on Saturday and turned a few heads. Her husband Greg said the couple bought the Lift Foil online and had it
shipped over from Puerto Rico and everyone tells them they want one. "Right now they are just an expensive toy but the feeling of 'efoiling' is pretty addictive and is very similar to flying an airplane one metre above the water," he said. ●
The sale of bags made by Boomerang Bags Noosa (BBN) volunteers has over the years funded movie screenings and other educational programs, including $500 seed funding to establish the Plastic Free Noosa initiative, but lately the group has decided to focus their financial assistance on one group, Ocean Crusaders. A recent donation of $2,200 helped Ocean Crusaders to purchase a new portable beach and bank vacuum cleaner to use on their regular "Paddle Against Plastic" waterway clean ups. Ocean Crusaders founder and director Ian Thomson said the Greystone Vacuum was a great asset to help collect micro plastics that are generally harder to collect at clean up events. BBN has also provided $2,000 to help fund two clean up events on the Noosa River each year. BBN project manager Sandra Acheson said the group's relationship with Ocean Crusaders stemmed from the involvement of local BBN volunteers and champions, Mark and Maura Harvey, who has been part of the group since its inception in 2015. "Mark and Maura has since spread their wings and joined Ocean Crusaders, organising waterway clean up events all across Australia," Sandra said. "They even featured on the ABC's War on Waste series earlier this year when they participated in the Yarra River clean up in Melbourne, which removed almost 5.2 tonnes of waste from the river." Ocean Crusaders work hand in hand
Ocean Crusaders Founder Ian Thomson with Noosa MP Sandy Bolton. with Tangaroa Blue to collect data at the clean up events, with all rubbish collected sorted and entered into the Australian Marine Debris Initiative (AMDI) Database which is an essential key to source reduction programs. This week, Tangaroa Blue was successful in securing the Federal Government's Reef Trust Great Barrier Reef Marine Debris funding. Along with AMDI partners they will be working with local councils, community groups, traditional owners, businesses and community members over the next five years focusing on the removal and prevention of marine debris. ●

TREES NOT ENOUGH
Be the change you want to see in the world. This is a common saying and for a better environment we can start by not using pesticides such as Roundup and the deadly pesticide poison compound 1080. Both are popular and used prolifically with the dangerous environmental damage that both councils and governments are totally aware of. We may not be able to stop councils using these harmful poisons but we can personally be responsible in not using them to help the environment and prevent pet dogs from dying from the deadly 1080. Monsanto makes Roundup and used to make compound 1080, later selling it on to Tull Chemical and Co. Roundup goes through the food chain of animals, kills bees and valuable insects and in humans it’s a known carcinogen and contributes to a host of adverse environmental and health consequences. Monsanto has an active ingredient not disclosed to the public labeled as “trade secrets". 1080 is not made from any “natural" plants it’s a chemical compound, it’s sodium monofluoroacetate, it’s an indiscriminate poison, is torture and can kill the family dog. 1080 could spell death to any cell it enters, it does not discriminate between cells or any animals. If anyone tells you that 1080 can discriminate between pests and native animals they are talking complete rubbish. noosatoday.com.au
There are alternatives for both pesticides, try this mix one gallon vinegar, two cups Epsom salts, quarter cup dish soap. One alternative to 1080 are LGD Livestock guardian dogs, such as Maremma dogs. Marie-Louise Sarjeant, Peregian Springs
BRINGING THE GOOD NEWS No sniping. “We’ll meet it in a canter” - they sprang to the stirrup and Joshie and he ... Scottie, Joshie and Mikie, they galloped all three. Into the midnight they cantered abreast, spurred by their high horse, to the horse sales they pressed. To meet action on climate change that was their aim, harnessing of horsepower, the name of their fame (apologies to Browning). Margaret Wilkie, Peregian Beach
CLIMATE ALWAYS CHANGING Noosa Mayor Tony Wellington rails against 'fake news’ when it comes to taking action to prevent “a climate change catastrophe". He says we could choose to believe “a small cohort of self-proclaimed experts including shock jocks and some conservative politicians" rather than taking action to see

“The Earth is steadily growing warmer. As all the ice at the two poles melts, a stupendous volume of water will be released. Fish will swim in Buckingham Palace ... the Sahara Desert will be a great inland sea ... New York will be marked by the taller skyscrapers as they jut out of the water ... the climate will be as when dinosaurs roamed the Earth and dense jungles grew in Canada ... palms and alligators will flourish at the poles ... man’s food supply will not be as it is now. It is a question of if he will survive it ... ” No, it’s not an Al Gore script for An Inconvenient Truth sequel, or the latest edict from the Climate Council’s Prof Tim Flannery, who told us a few years ago that our rivers would never flow again and our dams would all dry up... It’s a serious piece of reporting published in the reputable New York Times way back in 1932 - 86 years ago. In fact there are websites including Wattsupwiththat and American Thinker detailing more than 120 years of claims that our planet was either headed for catastrophic temperature rises or another ice age, all backed by climate experts of the day. And you thought catastrophic climate change warnings were something new? Remember the boy who cried wolf once too often. John Mikkelsen, Castaways Beach

Noosa achieve zero carbon emissions by 2026 (ZEN). A quick check of Wikipedia reveals a long list of international scientists including climate experts who dispute claims that our CO2 emissions are the main driver of climate change. Rather than blindly endorsing claims that “the science is settled," some more openminded people would welcome a proper scientific debate on whether factors such as sun spot / solar flare activity and the Earth’s orbit variables have a major bearing on climate, how big a role volcanic activity including eruptions below sea level play in ’greenhouse gas’ emissions, and how big an effect water vapour has in the atmosphere’s heat retention. It used to be called 'global warming’ but then the experts realised some places were getting really cold, so they changed it to 'climate change’ and dropped 'anthropogenic’ or man-made. Brilliant strategy as this covers everything from heat, cold, floods, drought, bushfires, cyclones ... 'Climate change’ can’t be denied as it has always happened and will always happen. But the fact is, there is nothing new in climate change alarmism, and dire warnings of impending catastrophe. Take the following fine example of journalism:

In your paper last week (NT, 1 November) it was announced that IRONMAN Oceania will contribute $1 toward ‘Trees for Tourism’ for every participant in the Noosa Triathlon Multi Sport Festival. A nice gesture but not so generous when, according to 2017 statistics there are approximately 5000 individual participants in the Triathlon paying $307. Teams participating pay $405. If we just calculate 5000 individuals paying $307, the revenue is $1,535,000. Add to that the unknown number of team payments and the sum would be higher. Of course there are expenses involved in organising and setting up this event and substantial prize money for winners. There are, however, several companies and government sponsorship to cover some of these costs. But Noosa residents have no access to information on revenue and expenditure. Nowhere have we seen in the local news any publishing of accounts by the organising company. Does the Wanda Group, a Chinese conglomerate that produces Ironman Triathlon events, pay significant fees to Noosa Council for the disruption to our town? · Consider that Lions Park car park has been closed partially and then fully to the public for three weeks prior to the event and again for a week afterwards; · Car access to Hastings Street, Little Cove, and large sections of Noosaville and Tewantin denied for a large part of the event day. Residents in the affected areas have to leave cars parked beyond the areas closed and walk considerable distances to use them. · Bus routes are disrupted; and · Church services have to be cancelled or changed to later in the day. Most residents appreciate the fact that the Noosa Triathlon is the largest such event in Australia and brings significant tourist revenue for businesses in accommodation and restaurants. But beyond that - is a contribution of $8000 sufficient compensation for the majority of Noosa residents who suffer considerable disruption and receive no gain from the revenue generated? NEWS PLAN ONE STEP TO STOP EROSION
IT’S REALLY AN OP SHOP? BY MARGARET MACCOLL With its brand labels and glamorous surrounds the new Lifeline Shop on Gibson Road Noosaville is quickly winning fans. Manager Joy Fox said the Noosa store was the second for Lifeline in its new upmarket style with the first in Nambour. And what do the customers think? "They're blown away," Joy said. "They think it's more like a department store than an Op Shop. They're all complimenting us." The store moved from its site at Noosa Junction because it had outgrown it and moved to the larger premises at Noosaville. Joy said the successful move and fabulous appearance was largely due to the efforts of their 30 volunteers. "We couldn't do it without our loyal volunteers," she said. Joy said more volunteers were always needed and good quality clothes and homewares could be donated to the store but not left outside. ●
Lifeline shop manager Joy Fox (second from left) with volunteers Jane Muirhead, Anne Asbury and Shirley Kubus.
ABUSE INCURS FINES FROM PARKING COPS Noosa Council is taking action against an increasing trend of threats and verbal abuse against its parking officers. "Threatening, insulting or using abusive language to an authorised person is an offence under Noosa's Local Laws, one that can attract fines of up to $2610, with
serious matters brought before the courts," Council's local laws manager Phil Amson said. Last month, a magistrate fined a Tewantin man $900 and ordered him to pay $349 court costs over an incident in June. "In that incident, the man approached
the parking officer as he was issuing an infringement notice to another motorist and unleashed a tirade of abuse," Mr Amson said. Mr Amson said Council officers could issue on-the-spot $261 fines for incidents of threatening behaviour. ●
After Noosa Council's unsuccessful application for funding through the National Disaster Resilience Program Councillors will this month discuss the undertaking of a Shoreline Erosion Management Plan (SEMP), estimated to cost about $240,000, in its bid to mitigate continuing erosion at Noosa Dog Beach. A Council survey of erosion of the shoreline has shown an overall loss of 19,586m3 of sand along the foreshore. A review of aerial photography shows a shoreline recession of up to 13m between September 2017 and 2018, which adds to the 16m loss experienced in the previous year. Council officers say a SEMP would "address priority erosion issues within the study area and recommend preferred management options that are underpinned by sound science, coastal engineering principles and community values, in a process that is supported by State legislative guidance".In order to complete a SEMP, a Coastal Processes Study which would involve deployment of data collecting units within the lower Noosa estuary and Laguna Bay, in order to collect detailed information on waves, tides, currents and water levels would be required.Council proposes $80,000 be allocated to the SEMP in the 2018/19 budget review 2 (BR2) to begin the work with the remainder to be incorporated into the 2019/2020 budget. ●

Lai Utovou, hit sensation from Channel 7's All Together Now, will perform at Noosa Council's Looking Forward to Peace Remembrance Day community event. Utovou will join Kimberley Hodgson from Disney's Aladdin the Musical, the popular Andrews Sisters Tribute, homegrown Noosa Chorale, and students from the Tewantin State School. The Chorale's performance coincides with the peace flotilla on the river. It's a re-enactment of a 1918 flotilla in which Tewantin locals celebrated the end of the war. Ms Harding said more than 25 boats and other craft were set to join the flotilla, decked in patriotic colours, just as the boat owners who took part 100 years ago did. The event begins at Tewantin's Memorial Park at noon on Sunday 11 November at Tewantin Memorial Park, immediately

It was an exciting morning on Super Saturday when about 1000 children aged 7-13 years, some local, some not, swam, cycled and ran in the Noosa Superkidz Triathlon. For some like Thomas, 9, and Meadow, 8 of Buderim it was their first time and they weren't sure what to expect. Old hands like Thomas, 12, of Tewantin was on his fourth or fifth triathlon and knew it was going to be "fun". Thomas planned to go "flat out" while his sisters Ava, 10, and Ivy, 8, aimed to do their best. All three agreed the cycling was the best section and had been mountain biking with their parents as preparation for the event. A group of children from Tewantin, had just finished a wellness week at their school at St Thomas More, Sunshine Beach, where they were encouraged to be active. The group have been going to the tri since one of their children Hamish, now 14 and too old for the Superkidz tri, took part in his first event seven years ago. But with something for everything Hamish didn't miss out, having participated in the Garth Prowd earlier in the day. "I just love the tri weekend, it's such a great vibe," his mother said. The Superkidz Triathlon was followed by the Tingirana Noosa Special Triathlon for young athletes with special needs, inspiring everyone. Network Nine's Today Show was there for the event screening the event live on air. ●

On the back of the Royal visit to Fraser Island Noosa played host to some of the UK's top travel product managers last week as part of a comprehensive site inspection of the region organised by Tourism Noosa. Tourism Noosa's Vynka Hutton said it was the third year that Tourism Noosa has welcomed UK's key product managers and the itinerary showcased a diverse range of experiences and operators working in the international markets." During their eight day stay the guests experienced Australia Zoo, a sunset ruise on Noosa River, beach drive, Noosa Everglades tour, learn to surf lesson, spa experiences, Noosa brewery tour, Everglades tour, Fraser Island and Lady Elliot Island.
"Tourism Noosa has a considerable focus on bringing high yielding and longer staying visitors from our target destinations such as the UK and this strategy has seen our visitor expenditure grow by 59 per cent in the past five years from $56.2m to $89.4m. International guests also tend to travel at different times of the year which helps even out seasonality in business," Ms Hutton said. Renata Wiles, Product Manager from Flight Centre UK product manager Renata Wiles said they were all blown away with how beautiful the region was how it was the ideal base to explore the broader region. Participants came from Abercombie & Kent, DNATA, Flight Centre, Austravel, Trailfinders and STA Travel. â—?

The container refund scheme set up at Bloomhill op shop in Tewantin has proved very popular in only its first week since being launched by Return-It. Shop manager Jane Tillson said one man brought in 1000 bottles he had collected in preparation for the scheme launch but this was more than the store operation could handle at its express drop off. When the Queensland Container Refund Scheme was introduced on 1 November Return-It launched a container depot in each of the 11 Bloomhill op shops on the Sunshine Coast including Tewantin. People can recycle their containers at the store and choose to obtain the 10 cent return on each eligible container or donate it to Bloomhill Cancer Care. Bloomhill is a not for profit charity that has operated for 20 years from a Client Care Centre on 10 acres of rainforest and natural bushland at Buderim for people diagnosed with cancer. It aims to bridge the gap in post-hospital care through a nurse-led model providing psychosocial wellbeing, evidence-based therapies, clinical advocacy, lifestyle intervention strategies and mental health services. Return-It aims to partner with other organisations including schools, day care centres, sporting clubs and other groups to help them engage their members to recycle,

Lior burst on to the Australian music scene in 2005 with his stunning debut album - 'Autumn Flow'. Recorded and released entirely independently, the album became one of the most successful independent debuts in Australian music history. A swag of accolades followed, amongst them three ARIA nominations including 'Best Male Artist', as well as a nomination for Triple J's Australian Album of the Year. Lior has since gone on to become one of the most successful and loved Australian singer songwriters, releasing a further five albums, winning two ARIA awards and covering a wide range of touring both in Australia and abroad, from solo performances to tours with the major state orchestras. Alongside his career as an artist, Lior has also enjoyed a broad range of success as a songwriter and composer. In 2013, Lior co-created the critically acclaimed orchestral song cycle 'Compassion' with Nigel Westlake, winning an ARIA award in Australia as well as having its premiere in the US where it won the Austin Critics' Award for 'Best Symphonic Performance of 2015'. In 2012, Lior won an APRA award for'Best Song Composed for the Screen' for his song
'Hey Hootabelle' which he composed for the ABC Kids show 'Giggle and Hoot'. This followed on from his hugely popular song 'Hoot's Lullaby' which closes the show nightly. In 2016 Lior co-wrote the score to the award winning theatre show 'The Wider Earth' for which he won a Matilda Award for' Best Original Theatre Score'. In April 2015, Lior was invited to be the sole Australian performer at the prestigious 100 year anniversary of the landing at

MORE PROTEIN? BY HOLLIE HARRIS Eating more protein, especially at breakfast, could be the key to achieving healthy weight loss, according to a report by the CSIRO. The report, Protein Balance: New concepts for protein in Weight Management, affirms the benefits of the CSIRO Total Wellbeing Diet for weight control and reveals that the latest scientific evidence supports eating at least 25 grams of protein at each main meal to control hunger and enhance muscle metabolism.
40%= 2337% %2( 8)) 94 % 092', 74)'-%0
The new Total Wellbeing Diet Protein Balance program focuses on shifting more protein consumption to breakfast. "The average Australian eats much lower amounts of protein at breakfast, so increasing breakfast protein may help to control eating later in the day," Senior Principal Research Scientist for CSIRO and co-author of the CSIRO Total Wellbeing Diet, Professor Manny Noakes, said. "If you find it difficult to control what you eat, a redistribution of protein toward breakfast may be the answer to reducing your waistline without leaving you ravenously hungry and craving unhealthy foods." The CSIRO report showed that for most Australians, protein intake was skewed towards the evening meal, with only small amounts eaten at breakfast. On average women consumed 11g of protein at breakfast, compared to the male average of 15g. â—?

U12 Storm took the field against Coolum Thunder and produced some awesome bowling to see the opposition all out for 46. Jacob 2/4 and Nick taking his first wicket of the season. With Charlie H leading the batting charge and top scoring with 37, the win was never really in doubt, Storm sailing past the total and ending the match with 123. Great runs were scored in the last couple of overs by the two Charlies - Charlie M being the last man standing. U14 played at Read Park against W Stanley Rivers, Day 1. TNT won the toss and batted, but off to a bad start. Wicket falling first ball of the game, and then a regular flow of dismissals had us in all sorts at 5/35. A few good partnerships and some hitting brought some respectability, all out for 115. In return TNT bowled and caught really well, and after having them 5/30 finished the day with them 7/78. U15s were up against Nambour away this week, Day 1. TNT won the toss and elected to bat, the top order found it hard to form partnerships with batsmen getting out, at 7/119 an early finish was on the cards. Enter Cooper Langan who turned the game

U12 Storm
Robert Plant Round 3 of the senior competition saw the local derby of Cooroy-Eumundi 3A’s hosting Tewantin-Noosa at Sel Bonnel Oval. With temperatures forecast to 35 degrees, it certainly was a welcome toss to win with Cooroy-Eumundi electing to bat first. The pitch looked like a dream, but batsmen found it very difficult to time their shots on what proved to be a slow paced track. Wickets fell at regular intervals until Mark Young (40) and 3A’s debutant Josh Butterfield (28) steadied the ship with some determined batting. Skipper Rob Plant chipped in with a solid 35, to help accumulate a respectable total of 181 all out. The TNT openers survived a difficult few overs at the end of the day, and will resume at 0 for 7. With the game finely balanced, next Saturday should make for a cracking day’s cricket! The U15s travelled to Caboolture for round 3. Winning the toss and electing to bat first, the innings started a little shaky but a 50 run partnership between Lachlan Harrison (42) and Ryan Christensen (50) got the boys back on track. Coming in at 9 and 10, Jack Ritchie (21) and Kai Badger (20) finished off the innings, achieving a respectable total of 190. The Cooroy bowlers then pressured Caboolture into losing 2 wickets before the end of the day’s play. Ryan Christensen at 2nd slip took a sensational catch, and wonderful spells by Lachlan Harrison (1-8) and Oscar Long (1-4) restricted the opposition to 2 for 12 off 6 overs. Hosting the Coolum Strikers, the U13s won the toss and elected to field first. Despite an early runout off sharp fielding, Coolum Strikers were rapidly building runs
until devasting overs from Flynn Steele (2-16) and then Jack Lynch (2-6) punched a gaping hole in their batting order with four quick wickets. Chasing 137 runs, Cooroy Eumundi’s batters quickly settled into their groove with great contributions right down the batting order. Flynn Steele struck the winning runs with a beautifully timed cut shot to the boundary. With the loss of only two wickets, Cooroy Eumundi claimed victory with a total of 179. U12 White maintained their unbeaten start to the season with a home win over the Coolum Renegades. Batting first, Cooroy were not at their best with wickets falling cheaply and regularly throughout the innings. Some stoic defence from Nathan Howarth helped build to a below par 90 all out. But the bowlers were in the groove and Coolum were dismissed for 53, helped by a superb catch from Nathan Hindmarsh. ● noosatoday.com.au

Australia's Max McGuigan rips it up on his way to an early round 15-plus score in the Vissla ISA World Juniors at Huntington Beach last week. Unfortunately Max s fine efforts, along with team-mate Cyrus Cox in the boys under 18 and Piper Harrison in the girls, couldn t get Australia into the Aloha Cup final. Our team could only manage a fifth in the world championships, behind USA, France, Japan and Hawaii. A lot of work to be done before Japan 2020. Photo ISA

into his Cabbin and cut off a part of both his Ears as he lay asleep in his bed." Boys will be boys, of course, as anyone who has been on an all-male surf charter will attest, but this was a little extreme. Cook located the main culprit, a troublemaker called Magra, relieved him of his duties and confined him to quarters. Perhaps by way of explanation of this beating with a feather, Cook wrote: "With respect to Mr Orton he is a man not without faults." Or ears! Although there were several sightings of the local Meerooni clan from the Endeavour's later anchorage within the estuary, the shore party only saw their camps and smouldering cooking fires, so presumably it never occurred to them that they were trespassing. Joseph Banks and his botanical team collected plant specimens while Cook's men netted a few fish and shot a fine bustard, thus giving the bay a name. Then they were off, leaving only Mr Orton's ear flaps bobbing in the bay, feeding the surface fish. There is no truth in the story that Cook turned to Orton as they sailed away, and asked: "What year is it, Orton? 1770 you say, splendid name for a town." Orton would not have heard through the bandages around his head anyway. No, the name would have to wait for 1936, so let's not forget that centenary coming up in about 570 days. ●

It's 562 days away from the 250th anniversary of Lieutenant James Cook's politically incorrect landing on the shore of a large estuary inside a round knob of a headland a long way north of Noosa, but here in the "birthplace of Queensland", the countdown is on. While much of the ballyhoo surrounding the arrival of the white man on the east coast of Terra Australis, or New Holland, depending on whose charts you read, will no doubt be centered on stockinged and corner-hatted chaps with permed hair and eyeglasses wading ashore at Botany Bay in colourful re-enactments - I have vague memories of attending such weirdness as a cub reporter on the Sydney Morning Herald back in 1970 - let's not forget that Cook also "discovered" what we now know and love as Queensland. Certainly the good citizens of the Town of 1770 and Cooktown will not let us forget, and are already at war with the state government for more funding for their own celebrations/commemorations of the Whitby mariner's arrival almost a quarter of a millennium ago. At Agnes Water, sister town to 1770, the pressure to make May 24, 2020, an occasion of a lifetime, is mounting. The hard-working Captain Cook Festival manager, my neighbor here in Agnes, has already resigned and will take himself off to a Buddhist retreat in Cambodia in the new year. Who will be next? Meanwhile, the northerly devil wind has set in here, frightening off both surf and fish, so rather than dwell on what might happen in 2020, I took myself off to 1770 - the year, not the town - which is located at the excellent Agnes Water Museum on Springs Road. Here, largely thanks to the hard work of the late local historian Arthur Jeffery, I could immerse myself in the logs, the maps and the many accounts of Cook's second landing on Australian soil - or sand and mangrove, as it was. Historians often tend to overlook, or at least underplay, the fact that when the HM Endeavour rounded Sandy Cape and headed north-west across Hervey Bay in May 1770, the ship's complement of 90-odd men had been two years at sea and four months without landfall. Some of them were by now very odd indeed, a few quite possibly barking mad, as revealed by a close reading of Cook's own journals. Take, for example, the intriguing case of Mr Orton's ears. On the afternoon of May 23, in fine weather with light winds, the Endeavour

GENTLE WIN SETS ASHLEIGH’S RECORD Defending champion Ashleigh Gentle wrote herself into the history of the Noosa Triathlon on Sunday when she notched up her sixth overall win equalling the record of legend Craig Walton Gentle took the lead in the final run leg of the race from the trio of Natalie van Coevorden, Annabel Luxford and Radka Kahlefeldt. "I found it difficult, but in saying that finishing the year here in Noosa means a lot to me," she said. "Each win here has had its own challenge. Today I had a terrible swim and I made it hard for myself because I had to work hard on that bike and reel in the lead three girls because I knew Natalie, Annabel and Radka would be working well together." Ashleigh planned to celebrate her win with Liz Blatchford who ran her last race on the day and had been a great inspiration and a great friend to her before spending time in Noosa with family and friends. Aaron Royle made it three Noosa Triathlon wins from four starts but the Rio Olympian admitted he was literally running on empty when he hit the finish line only metres ahead of a charging Max Neumann. "I am absolutely spent," he said. "I don't

ALL TNT TEAMS ARE IN WITH A CHANCE BY RANDALL WOODLEY FIRSTS. Last Saturday, the team travelled to Yandina to play the Pioneers, who are back in First Grade again this season. They are a young and inexperienced team and by afternoon tea the TNT boys had claimed first innings points in the match after the locals won the toss and batted first. Opening bowlers, Scott Aufderheide and Lachie Gunner bowled with pace and swing and soon had both their openers back in the shed. After 5 overs they were 3 for 4, after 14 overs 5 for 25 and by lunch Yandina were all out for 69, their top score was 18. Only four bowlers were used and the wickets shared- Scott 3-19 off 9, Lachie Gunner 2-13 off 7, Tom Freshwater 2-16 off 5 and Cody Rzeszkowski, playing his first match for the season took 3-20 off 6, After lunch, TNT openers Jake Dennien and Lachie Gunner batted patiently, scoring the runs without taking risks. They continued for 20 overs until the score reached 50, when Jake (26) was given out LBW. Lachie continued batting to be out for 38. Many of the other batsmen started well but no one was able to go on and post a big score which was the only down side of the day. Half-centuries plus will be needed against the stronger teams later in the season. Just before stumps, TNT were all out for 219, a lead of 150 runs. Other above 20 scores were Jarrod Officer 36, Troy Dennien 27, Cody Rzeszkowski 27, and Tom Freshwater 26. Next Saturday the TNT bowlers will be putting the pressure on from the first ball, to bowl out the Pioneers for less than 150 and claim maximum points for the second time this season. SECONDS were home against Burpengary in a must win game to get their season started. They sent the opposition into bat and their innings built slowly. The TNT boys hung in and fought hard all day, bowling well in partnerships to create 34 NOOSA TODAY

Pick of the bowlers were Tom Stewart 3-56, Adam Curry 3-18, Will Gear 2-7 and Robbie Payton 1-26. With 14 overs left to bat in the day it was a good chance for TNT to put a few runs on the board. TNT finished the day at 2 down for 43 with Reid Campbell outstanding with 32. But all in all, a much improved performance and the game is set up for a TNT win next Saturday. THIRDS. The team played against Cooroy-Eumundi Club at Cooroy and were asked to field first. It turned out to be a similar tale to the previous week with a flat deck and some patient opposition batting making it a long hard slog. Troy "Gallop" Evans bowled great lines early and was rewarded with the opening wicket. All the bowlers worked hard and TNT were on top at 4-64 shortly after drinks. The next pair dug in until lunch until Troy again made the breakthrough and finished with 2-22. Blake O'Donnell 2-32 picked up a couple of lucky wickets whilst Wayne Moore 2-29 and Jason Toohey 1-37 kept the wickets falling. Then Todd Macnamee, 2-19 off 15 cleaned up the tail for 181 which was probably about

20 more than they should have scored. However, 140 overs in the field on the last two Saturdays, with an average run rate just above 2, tests even the best. The TNT openers faced 3 tricky overs before stumps which were negotiated for 7 without loss and set the team up for a good chase next week. FOURTHS. The team were sent into bat by Palmwoods at Dale Officer Oval on a pitch that should have produced runs. However, the team lost wickets regularly and were dismissed for a disappointing score of 103. Young teenager Jack Saunders came to the crease in his first game in seniors and made a patient 16 in a partnership of 30 with Justin Talbot (17). This steadied the ship a little. Of the others, only Brenden Chaplin troubled the scorers with a well-made 26, including 2 big sixes in the one over. The TNT bowlers showed their skills later and at stumps Palmwoods were 5 for 76. Luke Anstey took 1 for 20 off 11 and very unlucky not to have a couple more. Others to get wickets were Brenden Chaplin 3 for 11 off 7 and Graham Chaplin 1 for 10 off 5. Next Saturday the team will need to snare wickets early if they are to win this match. ●
SLOMAN ON TRACK TO 2020 The Noosa Triathlon Multi Sport Festival was in full swing on Friday when Australia's best open water swimmers, some Australian sporting icons and more than 1,300 Noosa 1000 Ocean Swim faithful making the annual pilgrimage to Main Beach. For the second year running the honours went to local swimming sensation Nick Sloman of Peregian Beach who despite a strong wind and heavy chop managed to take 13 seconds off his 2017 swim and dominate the high class field. "The main goal was just to stay easy for the first 500m and then build it from there. I was leading going into the run transition and there was a wave that brought everyone back up. So I was a little bit worried that they would be able to hold on all the way, but I was lucky enough to breakaway at the end. You give it everything you've got. The Noosa 1000 is the hardest event on the calendar for us swimmers because of that run. It really changes up the dynamics and takes everything out of you." "I am doing uni part time because swimming takes a lot of time away from school and even work. For me swimming is my life and if I can keep doing it as long as I can it will be great. The training that I am doing is paying off and I am really happy the way I am going. It is a good stepping stone towards Tokyo 2020 which is my main goal. CLUBBIES SUPPORT THE NOOSA TRI With the annual Noosa Triathlon now becoming such a major event on the our sporting calendar it gives not only the Noosa Surf club but also other clubs such as Sunshine Beach, Mudjimba and Coolum chance to give something back to our communities. With the Wednesday Run-Swim -Run, Fridays 1000 Ocean Swim and the Noosa Sunday Tri Swim being held at Noosas Main Beach, the training and water safety experience of our lifesavers couldn't be put to a better use. Apart from the safety factor it gives those clubs involved the opportunity to give something back to our community. For these mid week swims water safety
teams were supplied by Noosa. But it was not just in the water that the clubbies helped out. One veteran 48 yr. old masters surf boat rower Gerard Broersen put his hand up to drive a courtesy bus and other veterans and parents worked in the recovery area and the official tents as recorders The Sunday Tri swim was a classic example with some 6,000 plus swimmers taking part in the 1500 mt. swim. The course laid out and supervised by Noosas Joe Cirello (chief water safety officer for the Commonwealth Games) became a tough event when a northerly wind sprung up and caused many pool swimmers to find the going tough.
HOOK, LINE & SINKER
However prior to the commencement Cirello called all water personal together and after a briefing and question time all aspects of safety were well and truly covered: experienced I.R.B. crews and board paddlers stationed around the course. The contribution of the clubs were as followers; Mudjimba10 rescue boards paddlers 2 I.R.B.teams and Coolum Beach 7 rescue board paddlers plus 2 I.R.B. teams Not only were our clubbies covering the event but some also took part. For the Braby brothers from Sunshine Beach club, Ian aged 55 and brother Scott 53 could be called veterans, with Ian contesting his fifth Noosa Tri (also four Mooloolaba Tris) and
Scott with 25. "The swim was a bit tough with the northerly blowing but it was great to take part." Another Sunshine clubby athlete whose performance was outstanding was 16 yr. old Zachery Bromage. Contesting his first triathlon he finished in fourth place for his age division. This followers on from an outstanding effort in the recent Coolangatta Gold Endurance Events when he and good mate Tex Dixon of the Noosa Club teamed up to win their category . Definitely a young man to watch. All in all another great surf lifesaving contribution to this famous event. â—?

NOOSA RIVER IS STARTING TO CLEAR - SO GET ONTO IT! As the water clear in the Noosa River the fishing has really started to come on, Flathead are in numbers at the moment with plenty of fish taken towards the mouth. Weyba Creek has also been the standout, along with Munna Point and the Frying Pan. Drifting whole ganged whitebait, froggies and large prawns has worked well along the deep drop offs along with soft plastics and soft vibes. The back of the Noosa Sound and Tewantin Marina have been producing a variety of trevally species in the low light periods. Shallow diving hard body lures have been working well on the troll. Soft Plastic lures that have also been worked well with quite an aggressive imparted into the lure, slugs on a quick retrieve have also excited the fish into biting. Tailor numbers have also been good with plenty of angler picking up fish on trolling hard bodied lures around the Marina Stretch of river. Bait anglers have also been taking both trevally and tailor on small pilchards, whitebait and Hardy heads. Good jacks have also been taken around the Mouth of Cootharabah, around the river mouth rocks and between the lakes. Live bait have been working well but if you don't have a cast net then bonito fillet or mullet fillet strips have been working very well. All baits are best used in conjunction with a snelled hook rig using 3/0 Octopus Hooks. For the whiting angler the dog beach and the frying pan have been the pick of the spots, live worms, yabbies and peeled prawns have been the best baits. With the wind getting up pretty early noosatoday.com.au
over the weekend most report came from the larger vessels, up on North reef Pearl Perch have been the predominant species with Maori Cod, Moses Perch, Sweetlip and Nannygai all getting caught. Rigs using 60lb leader with a 6/0 octopus hook at the top and a 4/0 gang hook on the bottom have had some good hook ups, if you are not into the paternoster using a large ball sinker right on the top of the hooks has been the go-to rig for fishing hard on the reef. Using lightly weight live baits has worked well picking up the odd pelagic and cobia. Sunshine reef has again been good for Coral Trout, Snapper, Maori Cod, Venus Tusk Fish and Spangled Emperor. For targeting all the bigger reef fish, using live baits has been the most successful technique. There has been an abundance of Yakka's around at the moment so make sure you have plenty of bait jigs on board. Halls reef has seen plenty of grassy sweetlip, maori cod, mac tuna and longtail tuna. On the beach the offshore wind conditions have been good for the beach anglers, plenty of quality whiting and dart have come from the close gutters, prawns, worms, pippies, and yabbies have claimed some good fish with the bigger dart coming on the high tide. Tailor have also been in good numbers with most fish taken at night or on the early morning tide, the Area between Teewah and Double Island has been the prime hunting grounds. So on behalf of Jack Mangrove, best of luck on your fishing adventures! â—? Thursday, 8 November, 2018
