Slice of heaven By Michael Doran

Steve Richards has found his piece of paradise in the Yarra Valley. 187490 The team competes in the Australian GT Championship with Steve driving a BMW M6 GT3. Another feature of Yarra Valley living that appeals to the whole family is the great diversity the region offers. "We can do so many different things around here and we're in one of the most beautiful areas of Australia. I love mountain bikes so I'm hanging out for all these new bike trails to open." "There are all the wineries for lunch and Killara Estate is one of our favourites. I like to try anything new but I'm also a steak and three veg sort of guy." "For a picnic or a drive my favourite place is up along the Black Spur where there are some

great little spots." "It's great that the Healesvile to Yarra Glen train line is coming back and that the whole Yarra Valley keeps moving forward with new things." When asked about the way children learn to drive he said he would like to see more driver education in schools. With his own children now on the road he is a big fan of defensive driving courses. "We put ours through defensive driving courses and all our nieces and nephews get a defensive driving course for their 18th birthday." "It's not about them learning to send the car sideways, it is just giving them an experience of how to use the brakes and steering to

get them out of a tight situation." A not so well known fact is that Steve has a restricted pilots licence which he wants to progress into a private pilots qualification. "With the two airports in the Yarra Valley it would be great to be able to take off and head in whatever direction we feel like on the spur of the moment." As both a high-achiever and a father he has his own message on what it takes to be successful at life. "Life is tough and anything you desire out of it is going to come with personal challenges but if you're organised and prepared to make some sacrifices then there is no reason you can't achieve what you want."

Steve Richards spent 15 years as a V8 Supercar driver and has won five Bathurst 1000s, so he knows a thing or two about high pressure environments. He grew up in Melbourne's eastern suburbs and from early years he had an eye on living in the Yarra Valley. "Everyone aspires to have their own little piece of paradise and for me that's the Yarra Valley," he said. "Having grown up around the area for so many years I wanted to live in a peaceful, beautiful place, that's what I consider is important to me and my family." "I work in a high performance, maximum pressure world but when I drive through Lilydale and get on the Warburton Highway it's like a load lifts off my shoulders." "I drive away from the real world into a world of peace and that's how I feel about the Yarra Valley." Steve, with wife Angela and children Clay and Priya, found their three and a half acre haven 10 years ago. He says it's a great place for families and kids to grow up in. "Kids have got access to so many different things to do out here, things that you don't have if you live in suburbia," he said. "Priya's passion is horse riding so we built an arena here at home. She can come back from school, finish her homework and go outside and ride." With a father and a grandfather so immersed in motorsport it's no surprise that Clay is following in their tyre-tracks. He is racing gokarts at the moment and wants to develop his motorsport career further. "Most weekends when we are home we are either at horse riding or go-karting so it keeps us pretty busy." Apart from his cameo appearances in Supercar races, Steve is focussed on his own business, Steve Richards Motorsport, which he and Ange run together. "I love what I do now more than anything I have done before. We are a family team, not a corporation team, so we are both fully involved."

LETTERS Election fatigue and frustration

The festive season has arrived at Cortella Homewares! Christmas gifts, decorations and lights fill the store, including delightful LED lanterns, baubles, tinsel, ornaments, wrapping paper and cards.

God help us, but elections are in the air again. What are we supposed to think when every day we hear so many bright-eyed ninnies spouting dumb slogans and twisting the truth until it sounds like something else? Do they really believe we are all stupid that we know nothing? And the media follows them around trying to make startling headlines out of their inanities. What a meaningless farce! I am sick to death of these endless campaigns, tired of all the focus on 'the economy'. Of course it matters, but the question is whose economy are we talking about? What we need is good government. That means governing in the public interest. This 'great economy' they go on about is something else. So far it has benefited the 'haves' in our country - very much to the detriment of the 'have-nots'.

Think now, people, and vote wisely later on. We don't want to go further down the US drain. Lyn Kennedy, Wesburn

National park question I urge voters in the Eildon electorate to question candidates on their policy in relation to the 'Greens' agenda of establishing a national park in the Eildon electorate. If this were to happen, many current users of the bush would be excluded. For instance, how any people who now rely on collecting free fire wood for heating their homes realise if that Greens policy comes to reality, they will be excluded from the forest? This Green city-drive policy will have financial detrimental effect to low-income earners. They would be faced with higher electricity and gas costs as the use of these two necessities would increase significantly. Raymond Donkin, Healesville

Lyn Scotchmoor, Lisa Mathieson and Dr. Khoi cutting the cake in the GP clinic. 187393 ter at school but they are lifelong skills as well. We are helping them with strategies on how to handle life." Lyn Scotchmoor is student wellbeing manager at the school and looks at the program from the students perspective. "This program means the students can get what they need in-house and within school hours," she said. "It helps to make them feel in charge of their wellbeing, which is a great lesson for their future when they leave here." On the subject of parental involvement Dr. Khoi said, "We welcome dialogue with the parents when we believe it is necessary and the

student allows it." "We have to deal with the complexity of patient confidentiality and the law in the context of what is best for the students." "I believe in capturing issues early before they become bigger problems later in life. Success is not about how many students we see in the clinic, it is about the long term effects on the students of what we are doing today." In the first year the GP clinic has seen 117 different students out of a school population of around 400. It operates out of a new facility that resembles a typical suburban GPs surgery, funded as part of the program.

Putting an old playground to good use By Casey Neill An old Healesville playground will soon spread smiles to underprivileged children in Sri Lanka. Rotary Club of Healesville members started dismantling the Queens Park equipment on Thursday 8 November. They'll pass it on to the Rotary Club of Flemington, who'll gift it to the Rotary Club of Colombo in Sri Lanka. Healesville Rotarian David Lau explained that the Flemington group searches online for playgrounds facing demolition. They came across the Queens Park redevelopment and reached out to their Healesville counterparts and Yarra Ranges Council. "First we made sure the council was putting up a new playground," Mr Lau said.

Laurence Webb, Don Fitzgerald and David Lau take the playground apart. He said the old equipment was destined for landfill as it had fallen out of use in terms of child safety. It was assembled with anti-tampering screws so the club had to source specialised tools from Bendigo to take it apart.

Meanwhile, Yarra Ranges Council has started constructing the new play space at Queens Park. It will include new playground equipment, landscaping with formal and informal seating, and paths connecting the play space to the existing paths. Fencing has gone up at the site, and the council expects works will be complete by the end of next year. The council is encouraging families to explore play spaces at McKenzie Reserve in Yarra Glen, Coldstream Recreation Reserve, Healesville Railway Station and Melba Park in Lilydale while Queens Park is closed, as well as the water play parks in Seville and at Lillydale Lake. The Queens Park Roll Play bike park is also open.

School zone safety boost Electronic speed signs are on the way to Woori Yallock Primary School. Northern Victoria MP Jaclyn Symes and Labor Eildon candidate Sally Brennan pushed for the $120,000 investment. The electronic signs will soon replace the static signs to make it easier for drivers to know that they must slow down through school zones at pick up and drop off times. More than 5200 vehicles travel through the section of Healesville-Koo Wee Rup Road outside the school each day.

Motorcycle accident A motorcyclist remains in critical condition following a crash on Healesville-Kooweerup Road. Police said the rider overtook a slower-moving vehicle and lost control. They said the rider slid for nearly 50 metres, and he was airlifted to Royal Melbourne Hospital with critical injuries. The 29-year-old remains in an induced coma.

Pool preparation concerns Bright green water captured running into Graceburn Creek in Healesville is nothing to worry about, says Yarra Ranges Council. Environment and engineering director Mark Varmalis said the council tested the water in the Healesville Outdoor Pool for chemicals before emptying the pool for cleaning as part of regular preparations for the swimming season. "Our tests indicated the water was free from any chemicals associated with chlorination and safe to be disposed of, so most of the water was then discharged into the sewer system," he said.

One year ago Healesville High School Principal, Allan Rennick took a leap of faith and opened the school's in-house GP clinic. At the first birthday celebration on 30 October, he said, "I didn't see it as a courageous decision at all, it was clearly going to benefit the students and was in their best interests. Why wouldn't you do it?" "One year on and it has overwhelmingly exceeded all our expectations.I am really pleased that we chose to become involved in the program." Healesville High is part of the Doctors in Secondary Schools initiative where 100 Victorian government secondary schools have been funded to have a GP attend up to once a week. Out of the 135 schools that applied, two from the Yarra Valley were selected, Healesville High School and Upper Yarra Secondary College. "We understood that the idea of students making their own GP appointments was potentially confronting and at the start we had a bit of pushback from parts of the community. However we saw this as a very valuable service to our students and worth pursuing," Mr. Rennick said. The clinic is run by Dr. Khoi Bui, from Healesville"s Get Well Clinic and he also believes initial expectations have been exceeded. "Its been better than what I thought it would be," he said. "We empower the students with the right information on how to achieve the good health a lot of them are missing out on, like healthy eating, good sleeping habits and how to manage stress." "All these things will help them to do bet-

Healesville Primary School cancelled its grade 5/6 city camp on “advice from the Department of Education” in light of the terror attack in Bourke Street. The school posted on its Facebook page that it was "not a decision taken lightly but the safety of our students is the main priority". The camp was due to begin on Monday 12 November. “School will run as normal next week and a discussion will be had then about the next step," the post said. However, the department said it was not advising schools to cancel any normal school activities and spokesman Bruce Armstrong said “the principal took this decision due to concerns in the school community”. “This decision was made just hours after the exclusion zone was lifted and we still weren’t clear on what exactly had happened and whether there was still any risk,” he said. “Regional staff helped the principal with a risk assessment early on Saturday morning. “As with all decisions about excursions, the decision to postpone the excursion was taken by the principal. “We’ll work with the school to rearrange the trip and to make sure that no parents are out of pocket. “I’d like to echo the calls for Victorians to go about their lives, and that includes schools.” Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton told Neil Mitchell on 3AW he was surprised by the school’s actions. “That’s exactly what terrorists want in those situations,” he said. “We’ve been encouraging people to get on with their lives.”

Bus about By Michael Doran Residents of AdventCare Yarra View Nursing Home in Warburton will be easily spotted now they are riding in a shiny new bus. The bus was made possible by a donation from Upper Yarra Community Enterprise, the owners of the Warburton and Yarra Junction Community Banks. AdventCare CEO David Reece said that the relationship with the bank was an important part of their facility in Warburton. "The bank was part of saving this facility back in 2016 and have continued their support ever since," he said. "Having the new bus will enhance the lives of our residents and we are extremely grateful for the role the bank has played in facilitating that." Coleen Hilbert, the centre's facility manager said that the bus will make a huge difference to the more than 50 residents who will use it. "The new bus means we can plan out trips in advance and also just take people out on a nice sunny day," she said. "If some of the resi-

"We didn't have this much flexibility before about where and when people could go out so for the bank to donate this is a big plus for us." The bus seats 12 and can be driven with a standard drivers licence, meaning it adds more flexibility and mobility to the centre, great news for activities coordinator, Antoinette Bretler, who organises the residents outings. Upper Yarra Community Enterprise Chair, Rod McKail said, "We are very proud of the work we do in the community and adding to the lives of the residents here in Warburton is part of our values." "Our community bank model is based around using our profits to support projects like this new bus," he said. "This is exactly the type of thing we want to do more of, but to do that we need to grow our business and add customers." "So far we have given back over $4 million in sponsorships and donations under our profit-for-purpose business model."

NDIS a year on for 4100 By Casey Neill It's a year since the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) landed in the Yarra Ranges. The National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) is celebrating the milestone and says more than 4100 Yarra Ranges, Maroondah and Knox residents were now benefitting from the roll out of one of the largest social reforms in Australia's history. The NDIS is a new way to help people aged under 65 years with disability, and their families, to get care and support. But when the Mail asked its Facebook followers about their NDIS experiences, most were negative. Angela Jones said her family was worse off. "I used to get respite through the council and home help from other providers, but we get neither now," she said. "Therapies we used to access aren't available in our area so we have to travel further and they cost more because agencies have put their prices up. "Other services that were accessible in our area now have years-long waiting lists." Marie Rulz said she was still waiting to access her funds and support after receiving her plan on 1 May. She has no support co-ordinator "so I have no clue how I can use my funds". Erica Schembri said she called in January and had an access request meeting in July, but hasn't been approved yet and is still waiting for a funding meeting for her son.

Joanne Arrowsmith said the NDIS had only just reached her area, "but the thought of applying from seeing others' experiences is just too much". "I have been to information sessions but it is so overwhelming," she said. Meredith Whitelaw said her access plan was up and running just over six weeks after applying, and she had a good support worker. "But I get really mad with the multi-layered cost approach within the NDIS system and the restraints it places on people in terms of being locked into agreements that don't totally benefit them," she said. "I also find the requirements of having assessments so others can tell me what I need or want a debacle considering my own expertise, and the fact that an assessment costs twice as much as what's wanted." Ms Whitelaw is writing a guide to help others navigate the system. Rebekah Fowler said that on the one hand the NDIS had been brilliant. "We were self-funded before NDIS and it was very costly, so that has been a huge relief for our family," she said. But she's found some aspects frustrating. "We were approved a PODD communications book," she said. "I have tried to use that funding only to have it rejected and no one knows why since the money down to the exact dollar of the quote is just sitting there. "It's been six weeks of phone calls and being passed around to different departments."

The new koala joey with mum Hazel.

Joey steps out for public A koala joey has started venturing from its mum's pouch at Healesville Sanctuary. The not-yet-name male joey was born to first-time parents Hazel and Noojee six months ago, about the size of a jellybean. He's spent the past six months growing in mum's pouch. "When he was first born he was pink, hairless and tiny," koala keeper Kristy Eriksen said. "We watched him make his way from the birth canal to the pouch completely unaided, relying on his already well-developed senses of smell and touch and an innate sense of direction." The joey recently started exploring, with his confidence growing each time he ventures out of his mother's pouch. Soon he will be riding on mum's back and will eventually graduate to climbing trees on his own.

The new joey. He's on display in the Koala Forest exhibit. Koala populations are under significant threat due to habitat destruction and fragmentation for agricultural and urban development.

MATERNITY PUSH This is the penultimate installment in our Maternity Push campaign, which we kicked off in September to support the Save Healesville Hospital Action Group and community's push for maternity services to return to Healesville. Next week, in our final edition before the 24 November State Election, you'll hear what your Eildon candidates have to say on the issue.

Care is key in maternity By Casey Neill Kristyna Brown had her first baby at Healesville Hospital 25 years ago. She was living in Wesburn and it was the closest hospital. "I loved the midwives at Healesville," Ms Brown said. "I still talk about my midwife now, 25 years on. "The care that she gave me post-birth, especially - she really looked after my interests and it was very personal. "She was an advocate for me. "I felt looked-after and nurtured." Ms Brown said the midwife explained the "three-day blues" and other hormonal changes her body would experience, and even offered to turn away visitors on her behalf so she and her husband could support each other through it. "She was practical, empathetic and she had the time to be that as well," she said. She was used to "living out somewhere where there's lots of air" so appreciated her room having window she could open and a rose garden to recuperate in. "It's more like you are at home," she said. "There wasn't a lot of other stuff going on. "There wasn't a lot of hospital noise. "It actually, for me, kept me a lot calmer and it was a much nicer atmosphere to birth in." Ms Brown's second child was born at the Angliss.

"I couldn't go to Healesville. I think by then they're really scaled it down," she said. "The midwives there were unbelievable, but being stuck in a big building where there's no fresh air ... would not have suited me as a first-time mum. "I would have felt very suffocated. "It was not the same as this natural lightfilled place." Healesville Hospital was a 20-minute drive from home "It meant that I was able to see the doctor more regularly," Ms Brown said.

"Having care close to home is imperative. "If I was worried about anything, everything was close at hand. "It's scary having to drive an hour when your waters are broken." Her waters broke at the hairdresser in Chirnside Park her second pregnancy. "I didn't have time to go home," she said. "We rocked up and had nothing of ours. "If it had of been Healesville, Anthony could have dropped me at the hospital and gone home and come back with stuff. "Or we could have gone to Wesburn and come back to Healesville." After the birth, her husband was at home in Wesburn with their two-year-old daughter. "I'm in Ferntree Gully, miles away," she said. "Just juggling the whole family thing - the people we were relying on to help us were miles away. "If we had been at Healesville, our support network would have been close by. "If I had been in the Angliss longer than I was, if we needed someone to look after our two-year-old daughter at the time, or just be there for Anthony to support him ... you're miles away. "To me it doesn't matter if you use that support network or not, whether you call on them or not, knowing they're there is a huge comfort. "A lot of it is about the mental and emotional wellbeing when you give birth."

Keeping our Wandin safe By Michael Doran In 1943 Wandin was a small rural town of one thousand people, two state schools, a general store, a blacksmith and a train line passing through town. That year the Wandin Fire Brigade was formed and on 10 November a dinner was held to celebrate its 75th anniversary. The history of the brigade is built around two main foundations - the commitment of the Wandin community and the presence of Les Sharp, aka The Oracle, who has been there since 1958. Brigade Captain, Tim Michelson, opened the dinner with a potted history of the brigade. He spoke about how the brigade has always been there for both Wandin and other regions, both in Victoria and interstate. Some of the milestones along the way have been the 1962 Christmas Hills and Dandenongs fires,Hurstbridge in 1969 and Ash Wednesday in 1983. “On Black Saturday in 2009 Wandin was instrumental in saving lives and property across the Yarra Valley,” he said. With growing numbers of cars came increasing accidents, which lead Wandin to setup a Road Rescue Unit in 1963, in spite of opposition from both the CFA and Government. “Forty percent of the brigades turnout was for road rescue and it became police policy to always call Wandin if anyone was trapped, even beyond our allocated CFA boundaries.” Les Sharp then came to the stage, accompanied by his wife Nola, to accept his award for 60 years service. Presenting the award Tim Mathieson said “Les started with the brigade in 1959, served as Captain between 1985 to 2005 and is still on the executive committee of the Road Rescue Association.” “Today we take another bow and congratulate Les for his well deserved 60 year life mem-

bership medal. Thank you Les for your never tiring commitment to the Wandin fire brigade, to the CFA and your community and to me.” In looking back Les Sharp said, “Things have changed a lot. On my first day we didn’t do any training, just had a cup of coffee but now you have to do 20 hours just to get on the truck.” “The biggest change is having women in the fire brigade, you gotta behave yourself when you go out now,” he said. “I’ll get Nola to thank everyone now.” In his address Tim Michelson spoke of what made the brigade great. “In my view the beginning of this brigade set the solid foundation for all that have followed, including the foresight and strong leadership that has always been apparent throughout this proud brigades 75 year history”

Vote packs spark anger

Promises aplenty By Casey Neill Pre-election pledges have been flowing thick and fast in the Eildon and Evelyn electorates. The State Election is now only a few weeks away, on Saturday 24 November, so Eildon’s Liberal incumbent Cindy McLeish and Labor candidate Sally Brennan are making last-ditch pitches for votes. Liberal Evelyn candidate Bridget Vallence hopes to take the reins from retiring Liberal MP Christine Fyffe. Agriculture Minister Jaala Pulford joined Ms Brennan at Watts River Brewing in Healesville on Wednesday 7 November to announce a $10 million fund to grow small-scale agribusiness. It would be available from the second half of next year under a re-elected Labor government, to small-scale agribusinesses that produce craft food, beer and spirits. Up to $200,000 would be available to producers who could show the investment would help them to scale up their operations and create new, local jobs. Watts River Brewing owners Benjamin Hamilton and Aaron Malmborg said they would apply. They need to invest in more equipment and add more staff to continue growing their business. Mr Hamilton and Mr Malmborg met at White Rabbit Brewery, and started brewing about three years ago after White Rabbit move to Geelong. “It gave us the kick up the butt we needed,” Mr Hamilton said. Their wives, parents and other family members and friends help out with operations. “We’ve both got young families and would like a weekend,” Mr Malmborg said. Ms Pulford and Ms Brennan also stopped by Healesville Scout Hall to pledge 2500 sausages worth of upgrades. Scouts Victoria would match the $7500

By Casey Neill

Jaala Pulford, Sally Brennan, Benjamin Hamilton and Aaron Malmborg. pledge with community partners. “Scouts give kids the chance to make friends, learn new skills and develop leadership skills,” Ms Pulford said. Scout Dorothy Salter said the group recently diverted funds from a much-needed kitchen renovation to install reverse-cycle heating and cooling. She said the new funding would help to renovate the kitchen and would mean a little less fund-raising was required. “It’s a lot of sausages,” she said. “It means a lot of other time can be spent doing stuff with the kids.” Dave Blair said the group had about 40 members across cubs and scouts. Ms McLeish announced that a Liberal State Government would move to cap rates for farmers, by establishing an independent inquiry into farm rates across the state.

She said a “qualified individual” would lead the inquiry, and must deliver actionable recommendations that would help to make rates fair for farmers across Victoria. The terms of reference would ensure comprehensive consultation with farmers and the Victorian Farmers Federation (VFF). “Food and fibre producers are the powerhouse of Victoria’s economy,” Ms McLeish said. “As a primary producer running beef cattle, I know how increased costs of production are affecting farming businesses. “Farming families are already under pressure from drought, rising energy and water prices, and a swag of new taxes.” A Liberal State Government would introduce a daytime PSO shift at Lilydale Railway Station. PSOs already staff the station from 6pm until the last train.

Labor Evelyn candidate Gail Ritchie is “outraged” that voters received Liberal Party election material alongside postal vote applications. But Liberal Evelyn candidate Bridget Vallence said the material was “100 per cent compliant with Labor’s new electoral laws and totally consistent with the past practice of both major parties”. “The fake outrage from the Labor candidate is nothing more than an attempt to disenfranchise voters who may be unable to attend a polling place on Election Day,“ she said. Ms Ritchie said on her Facebook page that locals had called her about the material, which “looked like official correspondence, but was in fact from the Liberal Party”. “I am outraged,” she said. “Political parties should never attack the integrity of the Victorian Electoral Commission or its independence. “That is exactly what the Liberal Party has done.” On Wednesday 31 October, Electoral Commissioner Warwick Gately stressed that the VEC was politically impartial and independent of government and did not distribute postal vote applications direct to households. “Any applications attached to or returned with political material received by the VEC will be rejected,” he said. The VEC said some Victorian electors could be confused when they received a postal vote application from a political party. Mr Gately encouraged those unsure or uncomfortable about responding to an unsolicited postal vote application to use the postal vote application available at vec.vic.gov.au. Online postal vote applications can be made at vec.vic.gov.au and must be completed by no later than 6pm on Wednesday 21 November. The State Election will be held on Saturday 24 November.

REMEMBRANCE DAY

Yarra Junction is remembering them

More than 6000 poppies adorned the Lilydale Cenotaph and surrounds in Main Street ahead of Remembrance Day. Casey MP Tony Smith said Sharon Chuck and other ladies volunteered their time to crochet and knit the individual poppies, and Don Parsons and the Lilydale RSL assisted with the project.

By Michael Doran At the Yarra Junction cenotaph, the Remembrance Day theme was the contribution made by female nurses in world war one. Yarra Junction RSL Vice President, Dennis Reeves, spoke about the role the nurses played at Gallipoli and how within hours of the landing the beach was covered with wounded soldiers. “When they finally got them off the beach and to the hospital ships, there were 570 wounded soldiers and seven nurses,” he said. “By the end of the day there were many more wounded but still only seven nurses.” “A hospital was to be set up on a nearby island but when the 40 aussie nurses stepped ashore there were more than 200 men laying on the beach with no blankets, no medical supplies, no nothing.” “The girls lifted up their skirts, ripped off their petticoats to use for bandages and treated the injured that way.” Local women Naomi Booker attended the service dressed in a replica world war one nurses uniform. “If you were wounded and saw this uniform, you would have been bloody pleased to see her,” Mr. Reeves said. “Some nurses even paid their own way to get there because their dads, brothers, cousins and friends went off to the big adventure. “When the guns fell silent on the eleventh of the eleventh another battle started. After many years of serving the wonderful community of Millgrove and surrounding areas, through our emergency relief and community programs out of Shop 1, 3039 Warburton Highway, Millgrove, the River Valley Office is moving- not far! not out of the area! just down the road. This has not been an easy decision to make, but one, we pray that will allow our outreach in to the community to remain viable, sustainable and relevant. The River Valley centre has been a place of great comfort to many in the community- providing emergency relief, outreach, a referral service, food assistance , Good Tucker day, counseling, transport, financial assistance, mentoring opportunities, visitations, art and craft sessions and other programs. We have always tried to be responsive to the community’s needs and to provide a safe and peaceful place for people to drop-in and to receive support and encouragement. The majority of our programs, along with new ones, will continue once we move to a new office space, which has been generously offered to us by the members of the Millgrove Baptist church. The River Valley church looks forward to working both independently and together in this community with the Baptist church- supporting the programs they currently provide at the same time creating new opportunities for both churches to serve. We thank everyone, especially our volunteers, who have been part of this great River Valley office and for the blessing it has been within our community. The River Valley church continues to meet each and every Sunday at 10:30 for our service. This is held at the community centre, Millwarra Primary School, Cavanaugh Road, Millgrove .The River Valley church also run an evening ‘ Encounter’ service at 6 pm once a month ( next one: 25th November) and have a Youth Gath (youth group- ages 12-20- facebook page: 683youth) which meets every Friday night, 6:30-8:30pm We would encourage you to come along to oe of the services- no matter where you are in your faith journey.

REMEMBRANCE DAY

Remembrance Day round-up

A place to remember

By Michael Doran With the centenary of the Armistice, Remembrance Day services across the Yarra Valley held extra significance this year. Casey MP Tony Smith spoke at the Healesville RSL commemoration, and Yarra Ranges Councillor Tony Stevenson spoke at Wandin Yallock.

By Michael Doran On Remembrance Day, Warburton RSL opened ‘The Peace Garden,’ situated at the riverside clubhouse. Garden designer and club treasurer, Coral Reynolds gained her inspiration from a C.J. Denis poem, Green Walls, which he composed about the tall gums in his Toolangi garden. “He likened the tall gums to tanned soldiers who stood tall and how when one would fall a young sapling would soon emerge and grow into the space,” she said. “Just as young sons would step up and take the position where their fallen father had been before being laid to rest.” The memorial wall features 47 birds of peace, one for each Warburton man killed in the first world war and whose names are honoured on an nearby plaque. “Every bird is painted slightly differently because whilst all the men died in the same uniform they were also individuals. The tree panels were chosen because trees were such a major part of the place these men called home.” Australian Peacekeeping Forces, who have served in so many places around the world with little recognition, are also honoured in the garden. “We hope these people get an opportunity to visit our garden and that it brings peace to them,” Ms Reynolds said. An olive tree was planted in recognition of their service.

Tiani Heatherich and Rory Fergusson recited poems at the Healesville service.

Council targets flies

In the dazzling gardens and surrounds of Yering Station, 39 finalists have put their works on display in the annual Yarra Valley Arts Yering Station Sculpture Exhibition. The exhibition opened on 28 October and six awards, adjudicated by a panel of three judges, were presented to the winners. Yarra Ranges council is a regular supporter of the event and mayor, Len Cox said the event is a major drawcard in the Yarra Valley's art calendar. "Supporting exhibitions like this is the sort of things councils should do," he said. "We need to encourage people to create new and original artworks and sculptures like the ones we are seeing all around us today. "It's wonderful to see work from our very own Yarra Valley artists on display and also to see so many people here enjoying our region. I congratulate Yering Station Art Gallery on another great exhibition." The only artist to win dual awards was Madelaine Last, from Taggerty in neighbouring Murrindindi Shire. Madeline, who is a diesel mechanic by day, won the Winery Choice Award and the Arnold Bloch Lieber Prize. "At school I tried to be creative but always failed," she said. "Then after my apprenticeship I got the idea of using my welding to make sculptures." Her sculpture, entitled Epicormic Regeneration, is made from star pickets, bent and welded into the form of a burnt-out tree. "I don't know how I got the idea but it just popped into my head. I started using straight star pickets but it didn't look real so I changed it to the way it is now." "I didn't work from a drawing so I just stuck bits of pickets and wire together as I went along. It took about four months to make in a tractor shed and I really enjoyed using welding

Yarra Ranges Council will remove potential host trees for the Queensland fruit fly (QFF). Works will soon start on council land in high-risk areas to prevent the pest's spread over the summer months. The council will remove and mulch potential host trees from public land in Wandin East, Wandin North, Silvan and Seville. "In September, we asked residents to keep an eye out for the Queensland fruit fly and to do their bit by maintaining fruit trees and picking ripe fruit," Mayor Len Cox said. "It's easy for the fruit fly to spread when there's ripe fruit left on trees or on the ground, and unfortunately, fruit trees on public property don't always get the close attention as those in people's backyards and in orchards. "Now, it's time for us to do our bit. Removing these trees will mean we can ensure the fruit fly doesn't have opportunity to spread, reduces the risk of other horticultural pest insects that spread using unmanaged fruit trees as a host, and also reduces the risk of other biosecurity concerns such as fire blight." Residents can help to QFF spreading by pruning and shaping fruit trees to a manageable size. The council said smaller fruit trees were easier to implement fruit fly controls on, and the fruit was easier to harvest. Insect infestation can occur when the fruit on high branches is left unharvested. Anyone who missed the winter pruning window can use spring to train the fruit tree branches to achieve a better tree shape and height. Growers can thin the fruit by reducing excess fruit clustered in bunches, leaving single fruit evenly spaced and with enough room for each fruit to grow.

Regeneration plan

Madelaine Last with Epicormic Regeneration at Yering Station. 187161 skills to make art." In the exhibition catalogue she describes the work "as exploring the resilience of Australians who have experienced the trauma of bushfire. It speaks of my observations of both humans and nature recovering from the aftermath of major bushfire events." Yering Station Art gallery curator, Dr Ewen Jarvis, spoke of the links between art and viticulture and how Yering Station had supported the exhibition for the 18 years it has been running. "It is quite natural for Yering Station to be a part of bringing art and nature together through this annual exhibition," he said. "Wine producers often feel sympathy for the vulnerability involved in the cultivation of art." Yarra Valley Arts, a not for profit communi-

ty organisation, are partners in the event and vice-president, Diana Francis said the awards help to create and nurture arts opportunities in the community. This is now the longest running sculpture event in Australia, and every year it grows in strength, becoming ever more valued and important for Australian sculptors and for the community she said. Also on show is an exhibition titled PlasticTide, by French-born artist Carolyn Cardinet. This contains a collection of mixed media works using familiar forms of single-use plastic packaging. It is described as like "being swept out to sea on a raft of discarded plastic bottles." Both the sculpture and PlasticTide exhibitions run until 9 December at Yering Station.

THE LOWDOWN Q&A What is something people don't know about you? That the third bedroom in my home houses my own reptile collection. I have two snakes and 18 lizards. What should you do if you encounter a snake in the bush? If you encounter a snake in the bush then there is no excuse to do anything other than look and not touch. Never interfere with a snake in the bush and they won't threaten you, they'll leave you alone. No one should do harm to any wildlife, which is also protected by law. I tell people that the ultimate form of snake bite protection is to leave them alone. When are you most likely to see a snake? Snakes are always around; we just don't always see them. They can be active at any time of the year but it's more likely that you will see them during hotter weather, particularly in the early morning basking in the sun. What people might not know is that snakes can overheat, so when it gets really hot they start seeking out cooler places and that's when people are often confronted by them in buildings. What should you do if you're bitten? If you're out in the bush, you should be prepared with a first aid kit on hand - that includes a long, broad stretch bandage. It's essential to apply pressure to a snake bite, wrapping it from the bite site to up the limb and to immobilise. Sit still and try to get help to come to you/the victim. Call Triple-O immediately. What do you find fascinating about snakes? I am lucky that I have made a career out of helping people overcome their unnecessary fear of snakes and teaching people how to deal with snakes if they come across one. It's really interesting how people perceive snakes, particularly those people who fear them without ever even having an encounter. I find children are the most enlightened and usually interested in learning more. 14 MAIL

THREE ‌ steps for a safe barbecue

1

The CFA advises checking to see if the cylinder is damaged before using a barbecue. Don't try to refill a damaged cylinder exchange it a reputable supplier.

2

Check the hose to make sure it hasn't deteriorated. Spray the hose and regulator connections with soapy water - if soap bubbles appear, you'll know that gas is escaping. This means you'll need to either correct the connections or replace your hose.

3

Check that your barbecue is clean. Excess fat or residue can cause a fire.

Healesville Sanctuary's Michael Taylor with an Eastern Tiger Snake. 160025 Picture: Jesse Graham Have you always been drawn to reptiles? I have been interested in reptiles since my earliest childhood memory. Lizards are my favourite type of reptile, particularly goannas. How many and what species of snakes do you have at Healesville Sanctuary? We have 10 different species of snakes at Healesville Sanctuary: two venomous - eastern tiger snake and red-bellied black snake; Australia's largest snake - the Scrub python; and seven species of pythons. Do you have a favourite scaly friend in your reptile menagerie, or a favourite memory with one? I treat all our reptiles equally but admit that

Chantilly, our Lace Monitor, is my favourite. He was brought to us by a member of the public in 2004 after being found by the side of the road. We discovered that he has a neurological condition and a diseased eye, which we had to remove last year. His condition meant we had to hand-feed him and handle him, and keep him safe at the Sanctuary rather than release him back into the wild. Sometimes I take Chantilly out into the Nature Play space at the Sanctuary where he will happily wander while being watched. It makes my day to see people come up and ask lots of questions about him. Chantilly is a great ambassador to break down any human/reptile barriers.

50 YEARS OF FLYING

Their 50 years of flight By Michael Doran Lilydale Airport was established to serve the needs of the Yarra Valley and the eastern suburbs of Melbourne and this year is celebrating 50 years of continuous operations Opened in 1968 by entrepreneur and motor racing identity, Bib StilIwell, the business was taken over by Neroli and Roger Merridew in 1982. "It was going broke and Roger, who was a keen flyer, wanted to find a way to keep it going," Neroli Merridew said. "When we took it over it was really just a small flying school and not much else." "Since then a lot has changed and we now have five businesses operating here. We have the flying school, air charters, vintage airways, skydiving and archery club here." "The flying school has got a lot bigger and is now the main business of the airport. There is a growing interest from people coming in wanting to get their private pilot licence and this is a perfect place to do that." Its location in Yering gives pilots quick access into the air with no tarmac delays. "An hour flying here is all in the air, not wasted on the ground." "We get a lot of people who want to learn at their own pace, who may not want to be professional pilots but just want to go solo," she said. "They generally fall into one of three categories. There are the young ones still at school who think they want to get a career in aviation and start here to see how they like it." "Then there are the young, successful business types who have always had an interest in flying and now have the resources to pursue it. This is about 50 percent of our students." "And thirdly are the over-50s who have always thought about learning to fly but never had the time or money, but now they do." Over the years she has tried to foster women with an interest in aviation by running a

Neroli and Jonathan Merridew at the airport. 187357 Women in Aviation group and encouraging students to join the Australian Women Pilots' Association. "With the current shortage of pilots there has never been a better time for women or young girls to get involved in aviation," she said. "It has been very satisfying to see this business develop in the way that it has," she said. "It's also been wonderful to take people on

airtours to some of the most beautiful and remote places in Australia." "Yarra Valley Aviation, our air charter service, can fly anywhere in Australia at anytime. We have Pilatus PC-12 aircraft that can fly eight passengers to Sydney in just 90 minutes and go anywhere in Australia with just 1 stop," Jonathan Merridew, Operations Manager, said. For those looking for a personalised experience, Yarra Valley Aviation has put together ten

of its most popular adventure packages. These include the Feel the G-force aerobatic experience for thrill seekers, wine tasting and lunch at Brown Brothers, King Island indulgences or a mountain bike trek from Mt Beauty to Mount Hotham. The service extends to tailoring personal experiences to take people anywhere they want to go, to an event they don't want to miss or a place they just have to see.

Thrills galore in the skies above at Lilydale Air Show By Michael Doran The annual Lilydale Airport Air Show is on 25 November, with gates opening at 11am. Following the official opening, the flying displays will commence at 1.30pm and be followed by the popular aerobatic exhibitions. "It gives people a chance to get right up close with a range of aircraft, which is something they could not normally do," Neroli Merridew said. "We have a trade hall set up in one of the hangars where a variety of aviation businesses will be set up showing all manner of aviation products." Exhibitors will include Angel Flight, Australian Women Pilots' Association, Recreational Aviation Australia, Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, Topaz Aircraft and an aircraft engine manufacturer. The flying school team will be there to guide anyone who wants to learn to fly. A big success last year were the flight simulators and they will be available again this year for people to have a try on. Vintage Airways operates a fleet of antique aeroplanes, including a fully restored Tiger Moth. Their experience includes donning goggles, leather jacket and scarf and the chance to take control in the air. A wide range of joyflight packages around the Yarra Valley and Melbourne are available. Skydive the Yarra Valley specialises in an entirely different rush - the rush you get from falling from 14,000 feet before the canopy opensthen gently glide down over the gorgeous Yarra Valley. There are a range of experiences on offer and the operators will be on-hand to answer any questions. For a diversion from aviation pursuits, Yering District Archery Club are located at the start of the airport driveway. On Saturday morning they hold Come and Try sessions from 10am to 11am run by qualified coaches and including the use of our equipment and facilities. Lilydale Airport supports the local commumailcommunity.com.au

nity by providing a base to support services including the police, air ambulance, firebombing and fire-spotting aircraft and powerline inspection flights. FROM THE 1981 MAROONDAH AIR SHOW SOUVENIR PROGRAMME We thank the Premier of Victoria, The Hon R.J. Hamer E.D., M.P., who, once again, kindly accepted our invitation to officially open the show. 3MP Bay City Radio have supported the Maroondah Air Show since its inception in February 1979. Lilydale Air Show '81 will feature three Tigers of the Point Cook Tiger Moth Formation Team, reliving the days of open cockpits and wood and fabric machines. Tuesday, 13 November, 2018

There's plenty to keep everyone amused within the award-winning Bollygum children's park.

A market for everyone Any day is a good day at the Bollygum Community Market. This country market in Kinglake has been going for over 25 years and has grown from just a few local producers to a wide variety of stalls. The market showcases unique one-off pieces, artistic talent and creative minds, as well as local home-grown and homemade food and wine. Regular stalls include clothing, plants, pots and garden art, soaps and candles, pickles, jams and honey, bread and wine, fruit and veg-

etables, hand sewn homewares, jewellery, coffee and hot food, cakes and slices and much more. Then there are always the new stalls that continuously contribute to the changing face of the market - marketgoers never know what they might find! As well as the market there is also a skate park, dry creek beds for a spot of fishing (rods provided), a sandpit with a mechanical digger, bridges to cross, five sets of swings (including a birds nest), tunnels to explore, spiral and

tunnel slides to slip down, climbing walls, distorting mirrors, musical cylinders, and for the thrill seekers there are flying foxes, monkey bars and much more. The park is based on the book of the same name written and beautifully illustrated by Australian author and wildlife artist, Garry Fleming. Bollygum is the story of a little possum who is taken from her warm and comfortable 'roof' home in the city and let loose in the dark and unfamiliar forest of Bollygum. Frightened and all alone, she is befriended by wombat and his

friends who help her find her way back to her family. The Bollygum Community Market is held from 10am to 2pm on the second Sunday of the month (from September to May) in the award-winning children's park, 'Bollygum' (40 Whittlesea-Kinglake Road, Kinglake). All the proceeds from stall fees are used to maintain the park. Copies of the 'Bollygum' book are also available at the market or by contacting the market co-ordinator on 0474 837 900 or bollygummarket@gmail.com.

ENTERTAINMENT

Purple fields are ablaze By Michael Doran Warratina Lavender Farm is holding an Open Garden Weekend on 17-18 November with all entry proceeds going to the Wandin CFA brigade. As well as the joys of strolling through the lavender farm, now ablaze in a sea of purple, there will be demonstrations of lace making, spinning and wood turning. The two days run from 10am to 4pm with continuous entertainment by roaming musicians, dancers, country and western singers and even a belly-dancer. With performers changing hourly there will be plenty of variety to suit all ages and musical tastes. Other attractions include vendor stalls, children's entertainment, a sausage sizzle and a chance to savour the house specialties - lavender scones and ice-cream. The Lavender Farm started in 1991 when, purely as a hobby, Annemarie Manders decided on growing a little plot of lavender on land which had been an old cherry orchard. Now with six acres of lavender fields and over 10,000 plants under cultivation, Warratina is a thriving working farm. The plants are harvested by hand and the bunches brought to the drying shed to hang before being stripped by machine. The stripped lavender is then sifted three times to remove unwanted leaves, sticks and dust. All the lavender grown on the farm is used in the on-site cooking and for producing the large range of items in the gift store. Admission is $10 for an adult, $25 for a family and children under 12 are free. Warratina is at 105 Qualye Road, Wandin Yallock and enquiries to 5964 4650. The Girl In The Spider's Web is a compelling crime thriller and a stunning work of acting and atmosphere. Infamous Swedish hacker Lisbeth Salander (Claire Foy) confronts the demons from her past as she fights to keep a deadly program from the hands of a crime organization. Foy delivers a riveting performance as Lisbeth, portraying an aggressive yet honourable woman with a razor-sharp mind and indomitable will covering deep mental trauma. Sylvia Hoeks complements Foy perfectly as Lisbeth's vengeful sister Camilla, combining shocking cruelty with a soft-spoken elegance. The Girl In The Spider's Web has powerful imagery and a harsh, grungy ambience. Feeling like a female James Bond movie at times, the film demonstrates how capable and tenacious Lisbeth is, with her many fancy gadgets and contingencies, while still stacking the odds severely against her, as Camilla shows a disquieting initiative in her vendetta against Lisbeth. Unfortunately, major character Mikael Blomkvist (Sverrir Gudnason) receives significant focus despite serving little function in the narrative, which causes the pacing to drag. While tense and visceral, the action scenes are often poorly-composed; in one climactic fight, the gloomy mist-filled setting, quick cuts and face-obscuring gas-masks make it difficult to keep track of who's who. Despite chaotic action and a redundant major character, The Girl In The Spider's Web is a grim, exciting and superbly-acted thriller. - Seth Lukas Hynes

Yarra Junction Library is holding a 'Discover@ your library' day on 17 November from 10am to 1pm, to show that there is more to a modern library than just books. Whilst there will be a lot of books to choose from, there will also be plenty of activities for junior readers, like face-painting, story-tellers and a craft table to experiment on. Instead of reading 'ukulele and drumming for dummies', visitors of all ages will be able to try the real thing, so for once the library will abandon the rule of silence. With more and more media becoming digitally based, the library is aware that these new technologies can present challenges to its visitors. To help with that, the library's Digital Literacy Officer, will be on hand to assist people to get the most out of all the library has to offer,

be it in printed or digital format. The library is also involved with Mountain District Learning Centre in programs to help people of all ages who face literacy challenges. The Yarra Valley has been identified as an area of low literacy and Mountain District Learning Centre is running programs to improve literacy skills for those challenged in this area. Currently the centre is holding Literacy Nights on Wednesdays with two programs, 'read write now' and 'digital literacy.' The centre's manager, Janet Claringbold, said that government funding has been made available to find ways of engaging with people whose lack of literacy skills may be holding them back. "In so many areas of everyday life people need to interact on computers, such as government services, health services and so on,"

Mounters are hard to beat By Chris Anderson The Yarra Valley Cricket competition had a new look at the top end following some forced changes. With Yarra Glen’s unfortunate situation with players, Wandin stepped up to the top grade, DJ Strachan Shield, for the first time in nearly a decade. Although much attention was on the Bulldogs and their return to the top flight, it was Mount Evelyn who sent a warning signal to their peers. Playing at the tranquil Gary Martin Oval, the Mounters won the toss and elected to bat against their grand final foe from previous seasons, Warburton-Millgrove. Warburton-Millgrove’s strength this season will lie in their miserly bowling. Early in this contest, Mount Evelyn found it difficult to find scoring opportunities as young star Bailey Humphrey and Stuart Thompson executed an accurate opening spell, followed by Cam Darwall and Adam Humphrey who kept the brakes on with their tight, slow bowling. When John O’Donnell was dismissed in the 15th over, the home side were wobbling at 3/34. Sensing his team were in a contest, captain Kane Jones took it upon himself to blast his team out of trouble and into a position of authority. This had to start with a significant partnership, and Gareth Fraser (29) held his end, rotating the strike and keeping the scoreboard ticking while Jones added the fireworks. The pair put together a brisk century partnership at quicker than a run a ball. Jones rode his luck with his aerial routes to the boundaries, but he hit the ball with such ferocity that the fielders just couldn’t hang onto the chances. Jones’ innings was closed at 118, and with the help of the hard-hitting Chad Witherdin (33 not out) the total blew out to 8/227 at the end of the 40 overs. Thompson (3/79) and Adam Humphrey (2/54) were the wicket takers for the Burras, but they were helpless to stop the onslaught. With a significant total to chase down, the

visitors were always going to find the going tough. The opening pairing of Finn Saurine and Shane Abblitt showed plenty of grit through the opening overs, but a lack of scoring saw the required run rate blow out quickly. Jones capped a memorable day as he ripped through the middle order with 4/3, leaving the rest of the contest a formality for the Mounters. The Burras’ young stars showed plenty of grit and technique late in the innings to stretch things out, but the damage had been done and eventually the home side eked out the last wickets to record a 119-run victory. Yarra Junction established themselves in the chasing pack as they outlasted Healesville in a see-sawing affair. Yarra Junction opened the contest with the bat, and despite the early wicket of Kocher, they were able to get themselves into the contest courtesy of a useful partnership between Matt Mallick and Kevin Bomford. Dan Ebbels (2/42) and Tom Daley (2/39) then quickly reduced the visitors to 5/53 to have Healesville in the ascendency. Nick Bark joined the fray and despite his status as a bowler first, batsman second, he has contributed valuable knocks along the way, none more so than his innings in this game. With his team teetering, Bark’s experience came to the fore as he guided them out of trouble and into a strong position by the end of the innings. Wily veteran Glen Thompson was his first ally in arresting control of the innings, while a partnership with Terry Ottrey allowed the innings to flourish to a conclusion of 7/162. It was Bark’s innings, though, as he patiently waded his way through the mess, then allowed his innings to grow as scoring became a priority. He stood out to be unbeaten on 63 at the close. Healesville’s innings followed a similar path to Yarra Junction’s in the early part, as openers Michael Jackson and Ben Mackey made a solid start, followed by a glut of wickets that reduced the home team to 5/55. Caleb Hrabe (2/24) was the chief wicket

taker as the innings started to head south. Ash Hamer’s cavalier approach with the bat had the scoreboard ticking over quickly, and had he managed to stay at the wicket longer, perhaps the Bloods would’ve run away with the victory. Lachlan Dempster ruined the parade for Hamer with his innings on 41, and that signalled the end of the resistance. The lower order couldn’t cope with the miserly accuracy of Terry Ottrey (3/19) and the innings was wrapped up for 118, 44 runs short of the target and inside 33 overs. Wandin found things tough in their return to the top flight against Seville. Seville’s strength is in their bowling and, true to form, they didn’t give the Wandin batsmen any room to move in a clinical display with the ball, despite extras leading the scorers. Wandin did battle bravely, but regular wickets stifled their ability to ramp up the scoring, and despite batting out their overs, their total looked light-on at 112. Light-on it proved to be. Three early wickets had the home team in the contest, but with such a low total it only takes one significant partnership to arrest the momentum. Blues captain Leigh Aitkins led the charge with an unbeaten half-century, ably supported by Tom Page. Seville recorded a comfortable seven-wicket victory with 13 overs still left to play. The win gets Seville’s season up and running, keeping them in touch with the pack jostling for finals positions. Next week will be the first round of two-day cricket and it will be interesting to see how the players adjust to the format change. Seville will travel to Warburton-Millgrove with plenty on the line. Warburton-Millgrove will be stung by the loss Mount Evelyn and would like to regain their status as the main challengers to the Mounters’ reign. Healesville will travel to Mount Evelyn in a tough match up. Healesville has had glimpses over the opening stretch of one-dayers to kick off the season, but they will need to find some consistency if

they are to outlast the white-hot Mount Evelyn unit. Finally, Yarra Junction will host Wandin and the Eagles will be keen to establish their credentials with a clinical display against the ‘new kids on the block’. Wandin, on the other hand, will continue to find their feet in the top grade, and it will be their performance rather than the result that their leaders will be looking at. Champs are underway By Ron Hottes

Pearson’s need for speed This Saturday night, Alexandra Speedway roars to the return of the Late Model Sedans. Last season they set the track and the large crowd alight with the fastest ever recorded lap around the speedway recorded by Healesville racer Cameron Pearson. Pearson is keen to go even faster on 17 November. Sharing main event billing with the Late Model Sedans is the Sports Sedans for their annual feature, with a 20-plus car field including the current Victorian champion Damien Miller, Standard Saloons and national and state governing body Junior Sedans. The Late Model Sedans have a strong local flavour, with Eildon brothers Chevy and Brock Edwards also in the field hopeful of getting one over Pearson. All three drivers have been competing against each other since the days in 1200cc Junior Sedans and now power around machines with more than 800 horsepower. mailcommunity.com.au

Damien Miller's competition in Sports Sedans includes Brendan and his brother, Steve Kershaw, another Healesville racer, and Alexandra local Luke Fallon among others. All four of those drivers have wins at Alexandra in their history and fast laps in the last couple of seasons at the venue. The Sports Sedan race has a little cash up for grabs so the action at the front end will be furious, with the Miller boys favourites to pick up a win. Standard Saloon, Victorian Speedway Council Junior and Speedway Sedan Australia Juniors complete the program. Racing starts from 4pm with the action finishing somewhere between 9.30pm and 11pm, depending on stoppages during the night. Entry is $20 for adults and $10 for children aged 10 to 16 and aged and invalid pensioners. Children aged under 10 years of age enter free. Call 0408 121 253 for more information.

Malcholm Dickson became the last qualifier for the play-off for the bag in Warburton Golf Club's Wednesday 7 November stroke and M.McGrann qualifier. His nett 66 was clearly the best result in the field of 30+. Adam Patrick was the runner-up with a nett 68. Balls extended to 72. Nearest the pins went to Adam Patrick on both the third and the sixth, and to Kevin Conway on the 12th. The play-off will be on 28 November. In the twilight competition, new member Andrew Gill (son of Geoff) racked up 22 impressive points to just pip Paul Long with 21. Players who scored 17+ points can collect a ball. Nearest the pin winners were Bruno Kennedy on the first, Clint Toohey on the third and the ever-consistent Ms Nursey on the ninth. On Saturday 10 November, the weather was delightful and the course condition tip-top for the first round of the C/Championships - and the scores reflected this. A-Grade was taken out by Clint Toohey with a very solid nett 67 (79 off the stick). But even that impressive result was overshadowed by another Tony Bickley graduate, straight out of the junior golf program. Young Seth Spencely was overjoyed to break 100 with a stunning 97, giving him a nett 62. Fittingly, Bickley was the runner-up on the day with a none-too-shabby nett 68. Therefore, balls only went down to 71. The daily nearest the pins went to Hatty on

the third, Lance 'Possum' Atwell on the fifth and 15th, Kevin Kane on the 12th and to Clint Toohey on the 12th, topping off a great day for him. In round two of the C/Championships on Sunday 11 November, A-Grade went to Ian Kempton, with a dazzling nett 65. Not to be outdone, Roger Mataele shot a nett 63 to take out the B-Grade voucher. The runner-up for the day was Peter Bell with a 67. The balls went down to 71. Nearest the pin winners were young Ms Nursey on both the third and the fifth, Peter Bell on the ninth, Happy on the 12th, and to Andy Lockey who nearly holed-out on the 15th. The state of the championships at the halfway point is: In the Open Grade, seven-time winner Paul Mason is leading the charge with two top rounds of 72 and 70. Junior Cross is only four shots behind and they appear to have it between them, as Senior Cross is another 10 strokes back. In B-Grade, Ray 'Happy' Gilmore is leading but being hard-pressed by Danny Fox. C-Grade, as usual, is still very open, with Tex Van Der Kooi just in front of Paul Long. There are plenty of others who can join the battle, led by Mr Consistent, Mick Eldridge. Liam Kay looks to have the Junior section all tied-up. Kim Kennedy is leading the Ladies comfortably. Healesville takes on top of ladder

The Warburton Bowls Club's number one team hosted Burden Park 1 in beautiful conditions. Despite winning two rinks and drawing one, the Burras went down 74 to 84. Rink scores were as follows: P. Caneva 10/32, J. Van Der Zweep 24/16, S. Lee-Tet 17/17, and A. Donohue 23/19. The side plays Croydon 1 back away on 24 November. Next week is a bye due to the Vic Open in Shepparton. Warburton 2 played Eastwood Golf 1 away on a slow and tricky grass green. The Burras were just behind at the break before Eastwood pulled away to win convincingly 57 to 101. Rink scores were B. Hall 19/20, P. Summers 11/31, D. McConachy 17/25 and C. Gell 10/25. A special thanks went to Nick Wal from Yarra Junction Bowls Club who played as a substitute for the Burras who were one player short. The side will play against Heatherdale 1 at home on 24 November. New and beginning players are still encouraged to join the small, friendly club. Coaching is available from qualified coaches. The Mid-Week Tuesday Pennant team had a bye this week and will play Eastwood Golf 1 at home on 13 November. The Wednesday Night Barefoot Bowls Triples Competition continued last Wednesday evening with several close games. Rink scores were as follows: Dill's Crew 16 d Reefton Rockets 10, Big Al's 16 d Moonshiners 12, Nutters 23 d Burra Boys 3, Saint Dogs 25 d Dunny Divas 3, Pensioners 16 d Shambolics 8, Trailer Trash 10 d G Force 8, and Get Schwifty 22 d Bolters 11. KTs had the bye.

Healesville’s number one side travelled to play top-of-the-ladder Upwey/Tecoma 1 on their synthetic green. At the break Upwey/Tecoma led 42/37 and in the run home they were much too strong to win 92/70, although Healesville won two rinks to salvage something. Healesville 2 played Vermont South 5 at home and in a very exciting tussle with two rinks drawing 16/16 and 18/18, and the overall score a 75/75 draw in a thriller. The results for Saturday’s Pennant played on 10 November are: Upwey/Tecoma 1 - 14/92 d Healesville 1 4/70 (A. Phillips 20/17, A. Beales 17/30, S. Graham 17/33, B. Simmons 16/12) Healesville 2 - 9/75 drew with Vermont South 5 - 9/75 (B. Brown 18/18, W. Mays 23/19, C. McLaine 18/22, R. Smith 16/16) Corporate Challenge had another big night under stormy skies, but got through OK. Next week is the big night with the finals to be played to see who is champion of this sixweek block. After five weeks the final ladder is Total Shutters on top, then Pro Style Carpentry, Above Board Plastering and Steelers. All are welcome.

Hybrid RAV4 on the way Toyota’s new RAV4 will introduce two advanced all-wheel-drive (AWD) systems. The 2019 RAV4 line-up will include the first Toyota hybrid SUV available in Australia, featuring the option of a newly-developed electric AWD system. A mechanical AWD system is also available in the new range, updated with Toyota’s first dynamic torque vectoring system that apportions torque between the left and right rear wheels as well as between the front and rear axles. Due in local dealerships during the second quarter of next year, the fifth-generation RAV4 will be offered with three new four-cylinder direct-injection engines - 2.0-litre petrol with front-wheel-drive (FWD), 2.5-litre hybrid (FWD or electric AWD) and 2.5-litre petrol (mechanical AWD). The most powerful yet most fuel-efficient RAV4 variants will be equipped with 2.5-litre hybrid technology delivering total system output of 155kW. Buyers choosing the non-hybrid version of

this new 2.5-litre engine will have 152kW and 243Nm on tap. It will have an eight-speed automatic transmission, including a lower first gear. RAV4 can also be equipped with a new 2.0-litre engine that delivers thermal efficiency of up to 40 per cent. Maximum power has been increased by 18.7 per cent to 127kW and peak torque by 8.6 per cent to 203Nm. It will come with the choice of a CVT or an intelligent six-speed manual gearbox that provides rev-matching control. The name RAV-FOUR (for Recreational Active Vehicle Four-wheel drive) first appeared on a small 4WD concept shown at the 1989 Tokyo Motor Show. The production version, named RAV4, made its debut at the Tokyo show in 1993 and was released in Australia the following year. The arrival of the fifth-generation RAV4 will coincide with the model’s 25th anniversary.

A new RAV4 is coming next year.

Rating rider clothing Victorian motorcycle and scooter riders will have online access to a world-first rating system for motorcycle clothing. The Transport Accident Commission (TAC), VicRoads and RACV partnered with agencies across Australia and New Zealand to develop the Motorcycle Clothing Assessment Program - MotoCAP. The program will give riders more information when choosing what to wear when riding. TAC senior road safety specialist David Young said the MotoCAP program would provide two separate star ratings on clothing - one for protection and one for comfort - via a new website. "Motorcycle and scooter riders have very little protection other than their helmet and their clothing when involved in a crash," he said. "There are plenty of options out there for safe and affordable protective clothing and MotoCAP makes it easier for riders to balance the sometimes conflicting needs of personal protection and comfort." mailcommunity.com.au

New findings from the TAC's 2017 Motorcycle Monitor showed most Victorian riders always wore protective gloves (80 per cent), a full face helmet (72 per cent), riding jacket (71 per cent) and boots (70 per cent). However, only 47 per cent of respondents wore motorcycle riding pants all the time. TAC research showed contusions, abrasions and lacerations were the second most common injuries sustained in on-road motorcycle crashes in Victoria, behind fractured limbs. RACV vehicle engineering manager Michael Case said the protection star rating considered performance in abrasion resistance, seam strength and impact protection. The comfort rating is based on how comfortable the clothing is for the Australian climate. Deakin University Institute carried out MotoCAP testing for Frontier Materials.
