A day to remember The Ellett family was out in force at Sunday’s Remembrance Day ceremony in Pakenham. Those who served in World War I were honoured to mark the Centenary of Armistice. Barry Ellett was there to mark the contribution of his family, with no less than five Elletts remembered on the Pakenham cenotaph - Cpl J.A Ellett, Cpl A. Ellett, Pte R.H.Ellett, E.F Ellett, J.L Ellett, K. Ellett and R.Ellett. Among those paying their respects were Barry’s grandchildren, Hannah and Jai Dobson from Bunyip. Anti-skyrail lobbyists have crammed the Pakenham RSL in protest of the Andrews Labor Government’s proposed 20 metre high rail bridge set to pierce the heart of the suburb. More than 100 residents attended the event - hosted by the newly formed No Pakenham Skyrail Association - to vent their frustrations. However, Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan has hit back at the Liberal Party’s proposed trench proposal, claiming it will cause further traffic chaos and possibly force the closure of the Pakenham Hotel. In a heart-wrenching address to the community on Monday night, Murrumbeena’s Catherine Pendelich detailed how the Glen Eira Skyrail destroyed her life. Ms Pendelich was in tears recalling the “years of trauma” she suffered due to being lumped with a Skyrail in her backyard. She claimed the community was initially promised by Oakleigh MP Steve Dimopoulos that a Skyrail would not happen - but the State Government later back flipped and land acquisitions followed. “It has changed out community and I was so burnt out by it, that I took the acquisition,” she said. “We were treated with complete and utter disrespect for two years. “I lost money on my studio and my business and I couldn’t find an amenity for the money I
was given, so it really threw my entire life out. “I have a 26-year-old who feels responsible for what happened to us because she voted for Labor and we got what we got.” The Murrumbeena mother hosed down any ties to the Liberal Party. “I am, and have been in my family, traditionally a Labor voter - and then I voted Greens,” she added. “I need you to know that had this been a Liberal government, I would be fighting the exact same way.” In an online poll by No Pakenham Skyrail of more than 1000 people, 63 per cent said they were in favour of the Liberal Party’s rail-underroad alternative. Head of No Pakenham Skyrail and career architect, David Farrelly, outlined the concerns held by ratepayers. “If I go to make a town planning application on behalf of the client, I have to have a nice separation between the two properties, I have to graduate the height of the building so it is sympathetic to the neighbouring properties. “Skyrail has no regard for planning laws. “Then there are the concerns about private property fences, private property walls, being covered in graffiti.” Labor has revealed the Skyrail would be up and running by 2025, if Daniel Andrews is reelected on 24 November.
