Dog knife attack By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Doveton man has pleaded guilty to wounding a neighbouring family dog's eyeball and face with three slices of a knife. Alan Erskine, 54 attacked Mia, a StaffordshireMastiff cross, in her backyard while her owners were out on 13 July, Dandenong Magistrates' Court heard. Casey Council officers found her bleeding profusely from three cuts around her left eye and "shivering in a state of shock". The pet was treated at a Hallam vet - who assessed the cuts as "acute" and less than 12 hours old. She has since resumed living with her family,
next door to Erskine - "without any further issues", RSPCA prosecutor Daniel Bode said. Leading up to the attack, Erskine complained about Mia's barking with three calls to Casey Council. He rejected the council's advice to follow the complaints process, such as filling out a 'barking diary'. In mid-June, he wrote an email to Casey Council about the dog's barking. "Either you shut that up or I will." On the night of 13 July, he rang Endeavour Police station telling them that he'd injured the dog. "I've done something terrible."
In a subsequent field interview with the RSPCA, Erskine denied he'd cut the dog. His lawyer David Schumpeter said Erskine's remorse was shown by his initial call to police. He had since recognised his act was "unacceptable" and "cruel". The "daily" barking had particularly affected Erskine due to his post-traumatic stress disorder. This stemmed from a workplace incident at a warehouse in 1994. Since then, Erskine had lived on a disability support pension. He was single, "fairly isolated" without children nor pets. At the 15 November hearing, magistrate Jack Vandersteen said the sentence could feature a
"high level of denunciation" due to animals' dependence on human beings. Erskine's actions weren't "spontaneous" but pre-contemplated in the email to Casey a month earlier, he said. Mr Vandersteen requested a psychiatric report on Erskine to verify any link between his mental health and the offending. "The allegations are serious. "I accept there's a lack of prior history, your early plea and there's a moment of shock where you seem to take a step back and ring the police. "You realise what you did was wrong." Erskine will appear at Dandenong Magistrates' Court for sentencing on 31 January.

Jobs and car parks plan The State Government, if re-elected, has promised a further 18 regional trains to be built in Dandenong in the next three years. It has also promised 55 new car park spaces at Yarraman train station - with CCTV and new lighting. It joins an earlier Labor pledge of 150 extra parking spaces at Dandenong station. At the Bombardier Transportation factory in Dandenong South, Premier Daniel Andrews pledged an order of 54 VLocity carriages to replace trains on the Geelong and Ballarat lines. The Government claims that the order, due for delivery in 2021, will support 500 jobs in Dandenong and the South East. The $340 million investment includes platform, stabling and cleaning works at Southern Cross station to support the trains. “We’re upgrading every regional rail line and with this order we’ll see more trains, more often on the busy Ballarat and Geelong lines,” Mr Andrews said. “Even better, we’ll do it while backing local jobs.” In March, the Liberal Nationals Coalition announced 16 new regional train sets - including 96 railcars - to be built in Victoria. Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams said she’d lobbied strongly for upgraded parking at Dandenong and Yarraman stations. “Demand for parking is growing each week - that’s why a re-elected Andrews Labor Government will deliver more car parks, freeing up local streets and making it easier to commute.” Meanwhile Liberal South-East Metro MP Inga Peulich slammed the Government for failing to provide “reliable and punctual” pub-
lic transport. She pointed to official figures that showed on-time train rates had dropped on the Pakenham line in the past four years from 91 per cent to 85 per cent. Cranbourne line punctuality dropped from 93 per cent to 83 per cent in the same period. “Commuters in the South-East are feeling the strain. “The Liberal Nationals have a comprehensive plan to manage the strain on our public transport, so that commuters have the better, faster and reliable services they need.” Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan said the State Government “get things done”. “We’ve delivered 10 minute frequencies, we are removing level crossings and building the Metro Tunnel to get you home safer and sooner. “Only Labor will deliver better bus connections, removing every level crossing on the Cranbourne and Pakenham lines to get locals where they need to go.”

ALP, Libs skip pokies forum By Cam Lucadou-Wells Major political parties were in the minority at a State Election pokies Q&A at Dandenong Civic Centre. Of the 'big two' parties, Labor's upper house candidate Tien Dung Kieu was the party's sole representative. Gaming Minister Marlene Kairouz was a no-show. No Liberal MP attended. On the whole, the minor parties - who made the majority at the forum on 7 November - railed against gambling's harms. And they believe most of the community is behind them. Greater Dandenong is a heavy loser on the pokies, with $120 million-plus spent down the slots. It is also one of the most pokies-dense council areas in the state, candidates pointed out. Three Greens candidates headed by deputy leader Nina Springle argued for the removal of all pokies from suburban clubs and pubs by 2028. There were some reservations from antifamily violence independents Tarang Chawla and Nicole Lee. They said some victims sought refuge in pokies venues, escaping from toxic, dangerous homes. A pokies phase-out would have to be coupled with alternative safe-places and more understanding of the players' underlying issues, they argued. Derryn Hinch's Justice Party didn't support the wholesale removal of pokies, especially from community clubs. Nor did physics professor Mr Kieu, of the ALP, who asserted gambling was a product of "human nature". Some of his rival candidates compared the line to Big Tobacco's alibis in the past. Mr Kieu said he knew first-hand of Vietnamese community members suffering losses
of thousands of dollars a day and wrecking families and their health. He cited local man Van Truong Nguyen who offered to smuggle heroin to pay off his brother's gambling debts. He was executed for drug trafficking in Singapore at age 25. "The harms ... are real and important but it's complex," Mr Kieu said, in arguing for resources and education rather than pokies bans. "Personally, I don't believe gambling can be reduced to zero." Dandenong Greens candidate Rhonda Garad, who holds a PhD in public health, movingly told of her own brother being "struck by an industry that shows no concern for (gamblers') welfare". His habit spiralled into addiction, despair and suicide. Reason Party candidate and former legalaid lawyer Laura Chipp had a former client facing potential jail over a $120,000 bill for unpaid road tolls. It turned out that the client's abusive and pokies-addicted partner was running up the tolls driving the car to Crown Casino every night. The client was trying to provide food and shelter for her four children while the partner was in thrall of a gambling addiction. Eight months later, her 16-year-old son was charged with stealing $40 of groceries because there was no food in the fridge. Greater Dandenong is part of Alliance for Gambling Reform, which is calling for lower maximum bets, lower cash-out limits and shorter opening hours at pokies venues. It is strongly opposed by the gambling industry. But Ms Chipp noted the majority of pokies players back the reforms.

Wild police chase ends with chicken By Cam Lucadou-Wells A man has led police on an "unbelievably dangerous" chase from Hampton Park to Doveton during a late Wednesday morning, a court heard. Police detected Jesse Rosse at up to 144 km/h as he drove north under the Pound Road overpass on South Gippsland Freeway about 11.14am on 6 June. The unlicensed driver refused to stop as he was pursued by a police car with activated lights and sirens. Slowing to about the 100 km/h speed limit, Rosse swerved in and out of the emergency lane while weaving between traffic. Other drivers - including police cars braked and veered to avoid Rosse's car, the court heard. Rosse took the Princes Highway exit, narrowly missing a truck at the Doveton Avenue intersection.
His car drove along the highway's grass median strip for about 50 metres and knocked a steel twin-light pole out of the ground. The fallen pole struck two vehicles, including a police car. Rosse drove down the wrong side of the highway, turning at Doveton Avenue. Witnesses estimated his speed at 80 km/h on the residential street, while cars hit the gutter to avoid a head-on collision. At Gumbaya Close, Rosse mounted the footpath and a residence front yard and then abandoned the vehicle. He and his two went to a nearby Red Rooster outlet. Rosse ordered food and a taxi to a Hampton Park address. Three weeks later, police raided Rosse's home, seizing cannabis, two hunting knives and an imitation pistol from his bedroom. Rosse was arrested at home on 3 July. He told police that he'd considered pull-

The body was found in the creek bed near EastLink and Greens Road shortly after 1pm on Wednesday 14 November, a Victoria Police spokesperson said. An SES unit is helping recover the corpse. The body will be conveyed to the State Coroner, the police spokesperson said.

He said it wasn't other drivers' problem if Rosse wasn't coping with issues such as losing his job and fighting with his dad. Since the incident, Rosse had remained on a youth supervision order without further offending, Mr Vandersteen noted. "There's been one incident in the last 12 months, albeit it's very serious." Rosse also had strong family support and references from the Doveton Eagles Football Club. He was sentenced to a community corrections order with judicial monitoring.

Gumtree buyer ambushed A man has been bashed and robbed in Dandenong North after arranging to buy a phone on the online marketplace site Gumtree. The 19-year-old Footscray victim had agreed to meet the purported vendor at McFees Road, opposite Lois Twohig Reserve about 5pm on Saturday 10 November. At the rendezvous, two males demanded the $1000 cash for the phone. The victim was then punched and kicked by his assailants. The pair took his cash and fled running down Barton Street. They were described as African appearance, aged in their late teens-early 20s. The victim received grazes to his arm and other minor injuries. Detective Senior Constable Tony Lavars, of Dandenong CIU, advised Gumtree buyers to meet in busy, populated areas and to not go alone. Greater Dandenong's newly-elected mayor Roz Blades has nominated public transport and homelessness as among her top priorities over the coming 12 months. "I want to look after the families in Greater Dandenong - that's the theme of this mayoralty." Cr Blades was elected unopposed by her colleagues in a ceremony watched on by family, friends, Greater Dandenong's 'Living Treasure' elders and faith leaders on 15 November. She told Star News that she'd lobby the State Government for better PT links to workplaces in Abbotts Road, Dandenong South. It would help give access for Greater Dandenong residents otherwise isolated from work opportunities. Jobs can help lift people out of homelessness, the long-standing Springvale Benevolent Society volunteer said. The council's housing implementation strategy will also be re-activated - tackling the lack of public housing and affordable housing in the area. "It's a huge issue in Greater Dandenong," Cr Blades said. "I'm sure it's not easy to (solve). Sometimes we leave the most difficult things till last." She told the meeting at Dandenong Civic Centre that this would be a "year of working together" - with councillors, businesses and residents. Teen robbed of rings and runners A man has been mugged at knifepoint by two males while walking through a Douglas Street car park, Noble Park. The 19-year-old Noble Park man was robbed just after 12am on Sunday, 11 November. One of the robbers produced a knife and demanded the man's three rings, necklace and a pair of runners. They punched him in the face and ran from the scene. The victim received minor injuries. The armed robbers were described as Pacific Islander appearance and aged in their late teens or twenties. Police and family hold concerns for a 44-yearold Dandenong mother who has been missing for nearly a month. Dongmei Li was last seen by her family at home on Fox Street Dandenong on 18 October. She left the address presumably on foot, leaving her personal property behind, Detective Senior Constable Tony Lavars of Dandenong CIU said. "She is not believed to be in possession of a vehicle." The guests enjoyed a feast as well as a performance by comedian Doug Chappel during the Dandenong Mingle at Artura on 12 November. It's estimated that 2.7 million unpaid carers in Australia put in 36 million hours a week to look after family members and friends with a disability, illness or senior needs. The annual value is estimated at more than $60 billion. Carers Victoria chief executive Scott Walker said there was a simple reason for staging Mingle events.
"One of the biggest challenges for carers was being able to take time out for themselves. "Carers often feel invisible and don't know where to turn when they need support. "As the peak body for unpaid carers, we aim to provide an event where carers can come together to share their experiences, enjoy a relaxing and fun day and feel rejuvenated to continue their at times demanding role." Mr Walker said the peak body aimed to raise the profile of carers and provides education, counselling and fundraising. It was lobbying for bipartisan support for the State Government's Carers Strategy, he said.

Cyber stalker pleads guilty By Cam Lucadou-Wells A registered sex offender has pleaded guilty to cyber-stalking women and posting explicit films of one of them on a porn site, a court has heard. Michael Brett Gagnon, of Noble Park, contacted a body-builder on Instagram while she was on holiday in Bali in October. He offered her $1500 for her to video herself stripping. She sent him her bank details and a 90-second clip via Facebook Messenger but he didn't pay. He instead hassled her in a barrage of messages for another film, then for phone sex and for real sex. The victim blocked his account, Dandenong Magistrates' Court was told. Under a pseudonym account, Gagnon sent the victim a Facebook message with a still image of her film. "You know you're on Porn Hub," he wrote. On the website the victim found two entries posted by Gagnon featuring her video and first name. She replied to Gagnon on Facebook Messenger, requesting he deleted the files or she'd report him to police. He deleted just one of them and was arrested by police on 12 November. Gagnon, a Coles supermarket manager, had admitted to using cyber names that he had not reported to police. This was in breach of his requirements under the sex offenders register. "It's the wrong thing to do but she blocked me on the account," he told police. He told police that he stalked the victim be-
cause she was "attractive". Another victim was solicited by Gagnon on Instagram in June, initially offering $5000 for an intimate naked video, the court heard. Over a series of messages, the offer was increased to $25,000. She performed for him on Skype for up to 15 minutes and was not paid. He later contacted her on Facebook, telling her that he'd recorded the video - which could get "18,000 views" on the web. "Unless you do what I ask in five minutes, I'm going to post it (on the internet)." After his arrest in August, Gagnon told police he was lonely and had trouble socialising. He admitted he didn't have $25,000, had no intention to pay for the video and effectively blackmailed the victim. He denied he'd uploaded the film, which was still saved on his laptop. Gagnon had relevant priors including coercing underage girls to send him explicit images. At the 12 November hearing, magistrate Jack Vandersteen ordered a psychiatric report on Gagnon prior to sentencing. "This offending is serious and protracted. It needs to be addressed because you're causing great distress. "This offending is emerging as a real risk to members of the community if you continue to engage in it." Gagnon was remanded to appear at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 22 January.

Ute goes head-on into tree Two men were injured when a Falcon XR6 ute crashed head-on into a tree on Springvale Road, Waterways. A man in his 30s and a man in his 50s suffered leg injuries in the smash on the road's
central median strip about 12.37am on Thursday 15 November. They were taken to The Alfred Hospital in a stable condition, an Ambulance Victoria spokesperson said.
Man charged with burglary A 40-year-old-man has been charged with burglary at a beloved Noble Park kindergarten. The man, of no fixed abode, had allegedly broken into Heatherhill Preschool in Noble Street on the night of 4 November.
He was charged with burglary, possessing proceeds of crime and possessing a drug of dependence. The man was remanded in custody to appear at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 15 November.

A homeless man, freshly released from custody, is back in jail after breaking into Lyndale Secondary College early on Sunday, 11 November. Ahmet Gezer told police he had been looking for a place to sleep when he entered a mobile music portable classroom about 2.30am, a court was told. He denied police’s claim that he damaged the classroom’s glass door in the process. On bail at the time, Gezer rifled through the portable’s items, removing a large piece from a recorder, another musical instrument and a bag. He left the items on a school oval next to the portable. Police arrived, chasing Gezer on foot for 1.5 kilometres along the Eastlink Trail footpath, the court heard. He was arrested at Oakwood Avenue, Dandenong North. Police seized a bag of ‘ice’ and took Gezer to Dandenong Hospital due to an accelerated heart rate. His bike, which was left behind at the college, was also seized. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen had released Gezer from custody onto a community correc-
tions order three days earlier. Gezer had failed to attend his first CCO appointment. “He’s annoyed and disappointed in himself,” his lawyer told Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 12 November. “He had a genuine desire to complete the corrections order.” Gezer’s lawyer said he had only been offered one night of emergency accommodation by The Salvation Army after his release. He sought work, and had not yet had the benefits of the CCO treatment programs to address his issues, the lawyer argued. “He had that opportunity last week,” Mr Vandersteen retorted. “It’s not appropriate for us to put people in the community and see if it will work.” Gezer was jailed for six months, including re-sentencing for the charges relating to his cancelled corrections order. “I don’t doubt you were genuinely keen to go on the order,” Mr Vandersteen said. “Ultimately you weren’t in a position to comply with the order.”

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Discarded syringes are plaguing parkland next to Dandenong Basketball Stadium but it is unclear what authority will take responsibility. Resident Lana Formoso, whose family live near the open space, says she's regularly found uncapped sharps under the bridge linking the stadium to Stud Road. "My kids love to run through the bridge's tunnels," Ms Formoso said. "So I have to totally detour this area." She said there needed to be regular cleanups as well as surveillance of the car park's regular drug deals, public drinking and littering. Greater Dandenong councillor Jim Memeti raised the syringes issue at a council meting on 12 November. Two days later, a council worker collected up to seven syringes found under the bridge. According to the council, it was an act in the interests of public safety, but the area isn't part of its domain. The bridge and stadium are owned by the council but a council spokesperson insisted the land under the bridge was a floodplain reserve owned by Melbourne Water. And a Melbourne Water spokesperson insisted - you guessed it - that it wasn't. The bridge isn't part of Melbourne Water's monthly rubbish and maintenance runs along Dandenong Creek, the spokesperson said.

LOOKING BACK 100 years ago 21 November 1918 Repatriation Conference at Dandenong A second conference, held at the instigation of the member for the district Captain S M Bruce MHR took place in the Council Chamber, Dandenong on Monday last when upwards of 30 representatives and delegates from the various shire councils and patriotic bodies throughout the Flinders electorate attended to discuss matters pertaining to repatriation of the soldiers. Capt Bruce, who presided said the object of the conference was to deal with the repatriation schemes either under the commonwealth or state governments. We must not forget the obligation that rests on us, to fight our battles, who we must be proud of as it was different in other countries where the men were forced by compulsion to go to war.

50 years ago 19 November 1968 Hair Raising The minimum price which males will pay to have their locks shorn in Dandenong as from yesterday is 90 cents. This was decided at a meeting attended by 16 district hairdressers last Friday night. And it will cost 70 cents for children's hair cuts. This is a rise of 10 cents in both cases. A spokesperson for the hairdressers told The Journal yesterday " The 90 cents is the absolute minimum we will charge. If somebody with long hair wants it shorn, it could cost up to $3.50 depending on the style required and the amount of time involved.

Restorations Dandenong Police Paddocks and Endeavour Hills and The Royal Botanic Gardens and Cranbourne will each receive funds under a $4.2 million State Government project. The Paddocks will receive money for restoration works and the development of picnic facilities while the botanic gardens will receive $225,000 for restoring grassy woodland and an old sand mine. Feeding a growing hunger The demand for hot lunches at Dandenong's Cornerstone centre has grown from six a day to 75, an organiser said. The centre's executive officer, pastor Max Walker said an average of 55 people a day took advantage of the centre's meals program at the old Church of Christ on the corner of Walker and Mason Streets. In my early years as an apprentice with CL Godfrey Plumbing, who were diagonally opposite the corner cake shop, I worked for descendants of the Dunn family. Mr Cameron and his family were living in this house when we were kids. He was one of the early shire council contractors. They built and repaired bridges and roads. Before sewerage came in 1936 they cleared weeds from the bluestone block gutters which carried the sullage water from all the streets of Dandenong.
We would see Mr Cameron working round the town with his large horse-drawn tip drays. The draughthorses were huge. Most of them were Clydesdales. Cameron Lane is named after the family. We went to the back of the house with Murph's dad when he delivered stock food or when we called to drop off some rabbits on our way back from ferreting at the sanitary depot farm in Hammond Road.
To get to their house we went in the laneway that ran to the back of the Bridge Hotel. That laneway is now called Kingsbury Lane. From there we could see where the clay pit had been that produced the handmade bricks for the original Bridge Hotel and stables. The pit had been excavated into the Thomas Street hill at the back of the hotel. Because of the steepness of the hill in Thomas Street, Cameron Lane only went to the back of the bakery. It was cut into the hill at the same level as the Forster Street shops. Cameron House and St Helen's Private Hospital in Thomas Street were demolished to become the new offices of the SEC. They were built when the original ones at the rear in Lonsdale Street, alongside the Bridge Hotel, became insufficient for the SEC
requirements. We paid many electricity accounts at both these offices. In our day, when Thomas Street crossed over Foster Street, it was still paddocks. From that side of Foster Street you passed a narrow gravel track that gave access to a back lane. That lane ran behind the shops to the timber yard and old red gum sawmill. When past the track you came to a barbed wire farm fence.

OBITUARY
Caring ‘angel’ of the faith Maureen Custerson 5 September 1933 - 26 May 2018 A devout, generous parishioner and brilliant musician, Maureen Custerson drank deep fom the 'well of love'. The much-loved mother, grandmother and aunt was farewelled at St Mary's Catholic Church in Dandenong on 4 June. Eighty-five years ago, Ms Custerson was born 11th of 12 children to the Martin family in Dandenong. She and her late husband Des were a charitable power-couple for good.
Community stalwarts who gave much - not least shining a light for their five children Rosemary, Richard, Bernadette, Neil and Josephine. And their 12 grandchildren - dubbed their '12 Apostles'. They lived for 24 years at Sunset Grove, Dandenong followed by Browns Road, Devon Meadows. In recent years she was known as a caring resident at a Kooweerup nursing home. A maestro on the piano, she constantly entertained family, friends and the public. Ms Custerson believed in the power of
prayer. Many years ago, her family was in desperate need of a new car. Their parish held a major raffle, offering a car as the first-prize but the family couldn't afford tickets. The first stroke of fortune came from a benevolent businessman who offered five free tickets to deserving families. The Custersons were nominated for one of those tickets. Ms Custerson plied prayers for her family to win the first-prize car. To everyone's awe, the car was famously won.

The Liberal Nationals' infrastructure package will include: a $4 million upgrade of the Endeavour Hills Police Station to enable it to accommodate more police and be open for longer; a $4 million upgrade of the 24/7 Cranbourne Police Station; a $5 million upgrade of the 24/7 Narre Warren Police Station; building the previously announced new 24/7 $15 million Clyde North Police Station, where crime is up 132.9 percent under Daniel Andrews. According to the Liberals, under Daniel Andrews, crime in Casey is up 14.7 percent with violent crimes against the person up 23.1 percent including assaults up 21.3 percent sexual offences up 42.1 percent and robbery up 129.9percent, drug dealing and trafficking up 34.3 percent and justice procedures offences up 145.9 percent. "It is vital that the hard working men and women of Victoria Police who serve the Casey community have the infrastructure and resources they need to fight crime and protect our communities when we need help the most," Liberal candidate for Narre Warren North Vikki Fitzgerald said. "I have listened to the concerns of the people in the Endeavour Hills and Hallam areas, and the common theme is longer opening hours at Endeavour Hills Police Station. "I am honoured to be able to advocate for them on this very important local issue." Liberal candidate for Cranbourne Ann-Marie Hermans said the upgrade to Cranbourne Police Station "will help police do their important work and keep the community safe." A Labor party spokesperson said the Liberals "can't be trusted as they cut $100 million from Victoria Police and sacked 350 support staff. "Only Labor will build new, 24-hour, stateof-the-art police stations in Clyde North and Narre Warren to give police in these communities the facilities they need to drive down crime and keep the community safe."

Tough-on-crime not enough By Cam Lucadou-Wells State election candidate Laura Chipp is no "soft leftie". But the head of Victoria Police's childrens court prosecution unit says the ramped-up 'tough on crime' approach isn't working - and won't work. "I know these kids, I know how to stop youth offending through evidence-based programs." Evidence around the world shows that mandatory sentencing fails to cut crime, Ms Chipp argues. "Mandatory sentencing does the complete opposite and increases offending." The lock-em-up approach takes little notice of underlying issues such as an offender's drug and alcohol issues, intellectual disability or acquired brain injury and homelessness, she says. "As soon as they're let out of jail, they've got no supports, no programs, nothing." It's a recipe for re-offending, she argues. Her father Don Chipp famously founded the Australian Democrats - a party that had wielded balance-of-power in the Federal Senate. Ms Chipp has joined Upper House MP Fiona Patten's Reason Party - once known as the Sex Party. Like her father, Ms Chipp holds strong convictions. There's a lack of investment in mens behaviour change programs for family violence perpetrators, she says. The vast majority of men who do the program don't re-offend, Ms Chipp says. Yet there are waiting lists of up to nine months. And up to three years for men in custody, she says. The Reason Party are calling for men being
ordered onto behaviour change programs at an early stage, like the first time an intervention order is served. It is being trialled at Heidelberg Magistrates' Court. "I want to stop him hitting her again - and again and again and again," Ms Chipp said. "Unfortunately the main parties are looking to punish him for that one incident but they're not actually looking at solving the problem." Ms Chipp says the South East needs a 32bed compulsory rehab facility for young people with substance and mental health issues. She wants more young people doing ROPES courses with police officers. It's a diversion program that stops 88 per cent of participants' re-offending, she says. "Our law-and-order policies are based on evidence. "It doesn't sound as sexy as tough on crime but we're smart on crime." She says young people in African communities would suffer "catastrophic impacts" due to "racial profiling". Less than 1 per cent of crimes were committed by South Sudanese community members "but you open up the newspapers you wouldn't think that". "The media and the race to the bottom is driving that. "I've sat in the Magistrates' Court and seen ... if the kid in the dock has dark skin, the journalist writes. If they have white skin, they don't." She is calling for a Clyde North cultural community centre - a space for young people of all cultures to hang out and feel comfortable in. "South Sudanese elders say if our teenagers had a space ... crime will drop. But there's no where for them to go so they hang out in parks. "A lot of them are bored, don't have any activities to do, can't even afford to even pay for

Inside the heart of a bully is someone surprisingly timid and insecure, says former SouthEast cop and now film-maker Damien Howard. His short film Bully casts twins Katherine and Coralie Heberley, movingly exploring the dynamic of bully and victim. As the schoolgirl looks in the mirror, she worries about what people think of her. Her bully tells her: "You see the same disgusting girl that doesn't matter to anyone." But in the end, what is being artfully portrayed is the bully's own destructive self-criticism. As writer, producer and director, Mr Howard has packed plenty of intensity and insight into just five minutes of screen-time. "The film is to show the other side to the bully and why she behaves the way she does," Mr Howard said at the launch on 14 November. "They won't see that bully as a tough person - they're often more insecure than their victims." Mr Howard has submitted the film to Sundance, Tribeca, Flickerfest and Byron Bay international film festivals. He hopes it will find a place at schools, as a powerful learning for students. With the rise of social media, the extremity of bullying is rising as a damaging social problem, Mr Howard. He was particularly resolved upon the suicide of a 14-year-old teen - known as a Akubra hat model - who had been plagued by cyberbullying. "It's just rampant and it starts at a very young age. New bridge of mateship By Cam Lucadou-Wells Two World War II veterans of the Gippsland Regiment joined a rich ceremony launching a re-named Monash Freeway footbridge in their batallion's honour. Wally Whitmore and Horrie Heathcote were among the dignitaries as the new signs adorning the Gippsland Regiment Bridge were unveilled at Prospect Hill Drive, Narre Warren on Remembrance Day. The regiment - formed and based in the Dandenong district - was a part-time milita unit called to action in New Guinea to defend
Australia in its hour of need. It was at a desperate stage of World War II when Australia's first-choice soldiers were already engaged in Europe. Indigenous elder and Vietnam veteran Graham Atkinson, Japan's Consul-General Kazuyoshi Matsunaga, Colonel Mike Kalms of the 4th Brigade, and the mayors of Greater Dandenong and Casey were among the attendees. The ceremony featured a flyover by Peninsula Aero Club, a performance by With One Voice Choir and elaborate wreaths labelled with 'Mateship', 'Courage', 'Endurance' and 'Sacrifice'.
Storm gear gifted to SES Greater Dandenong VICSES unit has received a gift of much-needed equipment from a corporate benefactor. The $2500 of new storm-related gear included lighting, e-flares and Acrow props - which are used to hold together damaged structures,. In the past year, the unit has responded to 252 calls for assistance. Of those, 185 were calls during storm damage. Insurance company AAMI donated the equipment as part of a $600,000 gift to SES units across the state. WHAT’S ON Walk Against Family Violence Greater Dandenong Council is calling on the whole community to stand together and say "No to Family Violence'. Now in its sixth year Council will host its annual Walk Against Family Violence and the community will stand united against violence. Guest speakers at this year's event include Victoria Police Superintendent Paul Hollowood and Survivor Advocate Jen Harwood. With One Voice Community Choir will also perform. Tuesday, 20 November. The walk will leave from Dandenong Market at 11.30am and will conclude at Harmony Square in Dandenong.
Walking tall By Cam Lucadou-Wells REVIEW This is as close as most can get to following the soaring example of humanitarian and former South African president Nelson Mandela. The richly-detailed exhibition Mandela: My Life takes you from Mandela's free, uncomplicated life as a child in the Transkei to the constraints of apartheid in the cities. An evocative catalogue of photos, film and audio lay bare the power of Mandela's defiance. A notice shows the indignities of apartheid the segregation of races. It's titled 'Anyone disobeying these laws will be imprisoned, fined and/or whipped'. These laws have to be seen to be believed. "Africans" must produce passbooks on demand by a police officer, for instance. They were not allowed to buy land. A ban on "Africans" buying land, or getting the same rates of pay as "white persons" - "even if they do the same work and work the same hours". Even a prohibition on a "white" and "nonwhite" drinking tea together in a cafe, and "Africans" attending a birthday party if the numbers make it "undesirable". The last rule on the notice by order of the South African Ministry of Justice states: "No white man may teach an African servant to read." As legend has it, Mandela and many others rise up against the indignities of discrimination. As a lawyer, he braved arrests, charges and trials. He became one of the leaders of the People's Congress Alliance resistance, earning the monniker the Black Pimpernel and heading

In the early 1960s, his capture and the Treason Trial of Mandela and 155 other defendants captured world headlines. Some of the breathless newspaper front pages convey the high drama. A film interview with a former jailer is telling for showing Mandela's warm humanity. His life as statesman and president is embodied with scores of artefacts, videos, his famous Madiba Shirts - and 95 phone calls from around the world paying tribute to him after death. By the end, you can't help feeling elevated by knowing this extraordinary man a little better. The internationally-touring exhibition is at Melbourne Museum until 3 March 2019. Inaugural comp kicks off By Nick Creely Tuesday 13 November will likely go down as one of the most significant dates for female cricket in the region. The Dandenong District Cricket Association (DDCA) - one of the most powerful, revered cricket competitions in Melbourne - saw a glimpse well and truly into its future, with the inaugural girls competition kicking off at Reedy Reserve, the home of the Heinz Southern Districts Cricket Club. Supporters of the association, parents and the four enthusiastic teams, HSD/Hallam Kalora Park, Parkfield/North Dandenong, Narre South and Lynbrook did battle in the historic

The significance of the occasion was not lost on DDCA junior vice-president Steven Richards, who was thrilled with how the night played out, and lauded all involved for getting it up and running. "The work the DDCA junior committee and Adrian Jones put in was certainly worth it on Tuesday night," he said. "To see the girls out there playing cricket will be one of the highlights of the year." Regardless of the results, it marks a significant moment for the association as it continues to thrive in the Dandenong and Casey regions, particularly with female cricket. tralian Women's side at the World T20's, to the major influence of Dandenong in the Victorian Premier Cricket competition, there's plenty of inspiration for female cricketers to dream big. And there's certainly plenty of talent in the wings - who with some more development and opportunity - can flourish, and become some of the next big stars of Australian cricket. "Across the two games there were certainly some very talented cricketers whom I have no doubt will go onto play higher cricket in the years to come," Richards said. "The DDCA are very excited about the future of girls cricket. We have goals that we would like to achieve and we are well on our way to doing that."

Ahead of the second round, which will once again be played at Reedy Reserve, Richards said that excitement continues to build in the association and the region. "Everyone that I have spoken to have received this (the opening night) very well," he said. "They can't wait for next week a lot of the girls said. "Credit must also go to HSD for agreeing to host this week." In the two matches, Lynbrook defeated Narre South and Parkfield/North Dandenong got the better of HSD/Hallam Kalora Park. Silverton - who had the bye - will play their first game in the coming round.

Changes aplenty at Stingrays By Nick Creely A new era has dawned at the Dandenong Stingrays after a raft of changes down at Shepley Oval ahead of the 2019 TAC Cup season. The Stingrays, the reigning premier of the competition, have changed hands at the top, with long-time assistant coach Nick Cox announced as the new senior coach. Cox was the front runner to take charge of the Rays after five successful seasons under outgoing coach Craig Black, who has joined Collingwood as a development coach. On several occasions, Cox has stepped in as coach in Black's absence to great success, and will have plenty of talent at his disposal as his group returns for the 2019 pre-season, hungry to build on their historic 2018 premiership. Cox is a highly regarded coach, who is highly respected within local and elite football in the region. 32 STAR JOURNAL

In even more change in 2019, long-time talent manager Mark Wheeler is also on the move, switching across to Sandringham Dragons to take on the top job after more than decade at Shepley Oval. Wheeler is leaving the Stingrays as a reigning premiership talent manager, and will add plenty of expertise to the Dragons in his new role. The Stingrays are yet to announce a new talent manager, but are believed to be set to make some announcements in the coming weeks. The Stingrays have also announced highly regarded Rye senior coach Josh Moore as an assistant coach for 2019. Stingrays' premiership assistant Josh Bourke, a highly touted footy head and coaching prospect, has also departed, taking on the senior coaching role at Sandringham Dragons, alongside Wheeler once again.

Adrian wants his Lions to get rolling By Hayley Wildes The Narre South Cricket Club has been a staple of the local Dandenong District community for many years and there’s one man in particular who lives and breathes Narre South. Adrian Hopkins has been involved with the Lions for five years and despite personal pain, has found comfort within the four walls of the club. Back in February 2016, Adrian - who was coaching the under-13s team at the time - suffered a horrific accident when he slipped in the cricket nets. He badly broke his leg and, as a result, was left with paralysis in that leg. Throughout a long and tough rehabilitation process, Adrian - who can no longer work - stayed involved with the club and has remained junior coordinator, among many other roles. “I’ve had some tough times with the rehab - I didn’t walk for the first year because I’ve got permanent nerve damage and it’s paralysed; that was pretty tough,” Adrian said. “All I had essentially besides my family and friends was the club. “Over the last couple of years I’ve been able to use it like a full-time job. “People see I’m doing a lot, but I use this as my job and it keeps me going and gets me out of bed every day. “People say I do a lot for the club. “But they don’t realise that the club has done a lot for me, more than they can probably understand.” In his role as the junior coordinator, Adrian oversees the flourishing Narre South junior programs. On top of six senior teams, the club has over 130 under-11s to under-16s, a further 60 kids registered in early-entry programs. The Lions were also the first DDCA club to have an all-girls program, which is now in its third season. “We’re very inclusive and even when we have things like a sausage sizzle, we make sure we have halal food and kids are seeing that and asking ‘what’s halal food?’, just picking up nuances like that” Adrian said. “When there are holidays that other cultures celebrate, we make sure that they’re communicated to the teams. “I think it just allows the kids to grow as people. “We always talk with the coaches that we’re not just teaching them cricket, we’re giving them other life lessons along the way.” Despite his countless roles within the club, Adrian wants to do more. Due to his injury, he is unable to help in the preparation of the turf wicket at Strathaird Reserve.
Adrian Hopkins is counting on community support at Narre South. The club currently uses a walk behind roller, which isn’t suitable for Adrian as he can’t walk or stand for long periods of time or manually manoeuvre a pitch roller. To enable Adrian to roll the wickets, a rideon pitch roller is required. “We’re volunteer-based and it’s hard with a lot of people working and many families now have both parents working full time,” Adrian said. “It would be huge for me to be able to sit on the roller and get that done during the day. “It takes a minimum of three hours of work each day. “Most weeks it will get a roll six days a week,

and that’s the bare minimum, you’ve got to do the extra stuff on top of that. “I can’t stand out there and manoeuvre the walk-behind roller, but a ride-on has got power steering and steering control. It would just make life a lot easier for our club for sure.” Despite the club’s best efforts, grants have not been forthcoming and the club is seeking community support. Pru’s rub of the green By Nick Creely A hole-in-one is extraordinarily unique in the world of golf, and so many golfers go through life without this feat, despite chasing it and dreaming of the day. But what about two hole-in-ones, just a month apart from each other, and at the same course? Well, that’s the story of 70-year-old golfer Pru Strutt, who recently achieved the freakish accomplishment at Spring Park Golf Course in Keysborough, much to the amazement of the staff and golfers present. Out of the 40 times that the magic hole-in-one has been achieved at the course, Pru is the only to do it twice. Her first came on Thursday 18 October on the 7th Hole, Par 3 with a distance of 100 metres. To prove this was no fluke, Pru then replicated her magic on Sunday 11 November, scoring the perfect shot on the 5th Hole, Par 3 with a distance of 150 metres. She told the Journal that she was stunned to achieve the perfect shot just once, and is still coming to terms with doing it only a month later. “You think that it’s a once in a lifetime, and then I did it again on a different hole,” she said. “The first time, you think ‘oh, well that’s it’, and the second time, you almost don’t believe it.” Pru explained the second shot was particularly tricky, and at first, had no clue of what she had achieved. “It’s up hill, so you can’t actually see the flag from the bottom of the tee,” she said. “Walking up there, my husband said, ‘that’s going to be really close to the hole’, and when we got there, we were saying, ‘I can’t see it, I can’t see it’. “We couldn’t see the ball on the green, and there were a couple of young blokes standing there on the adjacent tee, and they were watching us. We were looking around, and one of the guys said, ‘have a look in the hole’, and there it was.” Pru - who played golf for about 12 years before giving it up for 16 years due to illness is grateful she came back to the game two years ago, and said she was the talk of the course afterwards. “When we went into the pro shop afterwards, they had adventure golf kids playing down there, and they had three parties,” she said. “I went to walk through, and everyone is just congratulating me, so the young blokes who went in, must have told them.”
Young guns on display in Premier League By Nick Creely In what is a revamped state underage pathway program by Cricket Victoria, the new Youth Premier League kicked off for some age divisions on Sunday 11 November. The new competition will run between November and January each summer, and is designed to increase match opportunities for young players through exposure to Twenty20 cricket - especially for Under 18 cricket - as well as changes to development programs and fielding positions to promote a more exciting brand of cricket. Spinners work their magic By Nick Creely Depleted, but not to be defeated. Springvale South’s highly impressive depth and class was on show against a quality Hallam Kalora Park side on Saturday at Frawley Road on the second day of Round 4 in DDCA Turf 1 , with the Bloods taking the points despite two key injuries. Defending 312 after a century to association legend Steven Spoljaric last week, the Bloods were unable to call upon the five time Wookey winner with the ball, with the allrounder nursing sore ribs, while gun quick Jarrod Armitage jarred his thumb and could only muster up 6.3 overs. It forced a reshuffle for Craig Slocombe’s side, which had to immediately turn to the spin brigade to get the job done, and all day, the Hawks threatened to steal a victory. Prolific opening duo Ben Hillard (77) and Leigh Booth (44) notched up 89 for the first wicket - albeit slowly - to set a brilliant platform for the middle - and soon after tea, the Hawks were setting themselves up for a crack at the target after Hillard compiled a 68-run stand with Jagveer Hayer (30) to bring the score out to 1/157. But, a double strike to spin twins Malinga Bandara and Jarryd Straker saw both wickets fall in virtual succession, and from there, the two spinners went about their work in brilliant fashion, taking regular wickets despite the home side’s eagerness to take the game on at all costs after tea. The pair wore the Hawks down, with Bandara (6/104) and Straker (4/75) combining for 51 overs between them ton single handedly bowl the Bloods to a crucial win. In 80 overs, the Hawks were dismissed for 272, still 40 runs away from victory. Down at Carroll Reserve, St Mary’s stunned Mordialloc in what was an absolutely dominant victory at home against the reigning pre-
miers. Defending a modest 167 against the Saints, the home side came into day two 1/26, and in a comfortable position. But, from the outset, the Saints didn’t allow the visitors to get the game on their terms, with skipper Kaushyla Gajasinghe (38) and Rhys Serpanchy swiftly knocking

The Dandenong Rangers ended their fourgame losing streak in dominant fashion against the Bendigo Spirit on Friday night. Taking on the Spirit in Bendigo, Dandenong’s defence was switched on from the opening tip and simply smothered Bendigo all night. Forcing five turnovers in the opening quarter, Dandenong took advantage and held a 2214 lead at the first break. Bec Cole scored the first five points of the second quarter and it was the start of a dominant run for the Rangers. They held the Spirit scoreless for the first 5:15 of the quarter - forcing them into five turnovers over that time - and jumped out to an incredible 33-14 lead. Both teams traded baskets from there, and at half-time Dandenong held a 44-29 lead. Holding the opposition to just 29 first-half
points was a credit to the Rangers’ willingness to work hard on the defensive end. Having experienced some second half fadeouts recently, the Rangers came out in the third with a real purpose. The simply refused to take their foot off the gas pedal. They continued to bunker down on defence and restricted Bendigo to 17 points for the third quarter. On offence, Tessa Lavey caught fire and scored 12 points for the quarter. That included back-to-back triples to end the term. With a quarter to play, Dandenong held a comprehensive 69-48 lead. In the fourth quarter, the Spirit did cut the lead down to 11 points with plenty of time left on the clock. But the Rangers responded to run out 83-62 winners.
Betnijah Laney (18 points, 5 assists and 3 steals) was massive on both ends of the court, while Bec Cole (16 points and 5 assists) and Tessa Lavey (16 point and 3 rebounds) played vital roles in ensuring Dandenong left Bendigo with a win. The Rangers’ defence, which has been suspect of late, was rock solid, holding the Sprit to just 31% shooting from the field, while the Rangers shot a healthy 50%. For Bendigo, Rebecca Tobin (14 points and 8 rebounds) top-scored, while Cassidy McLean (11 points) and Louella Tomlinson (10 points and 6 rebounds) were impressive off the bench.
