Share the Road By Michael Doran Amy Gillett, an olympic athlete and world class cyclist, was tragically killed in 2005 while on a training ride in Germany. The Amy Gillett Foundation, formed after her death, has a vision of zero cyclist fatalities and brought its message to Healesville Primary School on 16 October, as part of its Share the Road Tour. The tour involves 24 riders going from Albury to Melbourne over six days and bringing the message of safe cycling to selected primary schools along the way. At the morning in Healesville one of Australia's greatest cyclists, Phil Anderson, spoke of the need to improve how roads are being shared. He said that getting the safe-cycling message out to young children is an effective way to shift community attitudes to sharing the road. "This is vital, we are talking about the protection of our younger generation," he said. "We need to instill in them the need to share the road and what they see and hear in their family car is just so important. "Things are getting better on the road, mainly through awareness and the foundation's work but there is so much more to do and so many ways to do it. "Victoria is the only state in Australia that has not adopted the one metre laws. I know that it's a very difficult law to enforce but its not only about enforcement. "Sure if the odd person gets a ticket or its publicised that's great but what is really needed is a change in the culture of how roads are used by everyone, cars, motorbikes, cyclists and pedestrians. "There is a huge difference between Australia and Europe, where cities are built around cycling for transport and recreation for all ages. "They make it a lot easier for people to use bikes to get around but there is not the friction between drivers and riders you see here. "I was doing a right hand turn the other day, standing in the middle of the road indicating

Phil Anderson, Simon Gillett and Phoebe Dunn at Healesville Primary School. 187814 and a guy pulls up and starts swearing and abusing me. That doesn't happen when I am in Europe." Cycling Australia Chief Operating Officer, John McDonough, also stressed how important it is to target schools in this campaign. "Coming to schools is critical to help educate kids in how to ride their bikes safely and that cycling is a fun way to keep fit and healthy.

"We want kids to understand cycling is fun in whatever form you choose, a sport, socially, a family activity or a way to get to work. "On the cyclists side we are also here to talk about how to actively manage the risks, because they are there. It is things like helmets, lights, bright clothes and following the road rules, those are the messages we are bringing here today. Amy Gillett Foundation CEO, Phoebe Dunn

YARRA RANGES

said that the issue is all about respect and responsibility. "Our goal at the foundation is to create respect and responsibility amongst all road users and that's the message we want the kids here to take home with them. "I drive a car, ride my bike and walk and I think it is about having mutual respect for other users but also taking responsibility for what I do on the roads. "Most drivers do the right thing as do most cyclists but the consequences of either not doing the right thing can be horrific. "We would like to see Victoria adopt the one metre law like the rest of Australia but if no fines are ever issued that would be a great outcome for us." Simon Gillett, who co-founded the foundation after his wife's death, also said that kids are an important ingredient in cyclist safety. "Coming to schools is a very important part of what the foundation does and it's great to be able to get our message out there to these kids today. "I think around 95 percent of drivers are okay with sharing the road but we still need to keep chipping away at the other five percent. "It's a process and we are getting there with more messaging and focus on the young who become the cyclists and drivers of tomorrow. We will get there." The AGF Chair, Andy Sheats, took on the lead educator role and kept the students attention in a way any of the teachers watching would have been proud of. "I have been an cyclist since I was five and have seen people hit by cars and lost a number of friends who were just out for a bike ride. "My message is about the lifetime of joy cycling can bring and how you can do it safely. It's a cultural shift that's needed on the roads and people really just need to care about each other a bit more. "The more you talk about sharing the road the more people start to understand the message and that's why we are here. To be honest we all really enjoy coming to schools and this has been fun."

MATERNITY PUSH This is the final instalment in our Maternity Push campaign, which we kicked off in September to support the Save Healesville Hospital Action Group and community's push for maternity services to return to Healesville. Ahead of the State Election this Saturday 24 November, here's what the Eildon candidates have to say on the issue. We also spoke to one last Yarra Valley mum about her birth experience.

Eildon candidates push on By Casey Neill ALP candidate Sally Brennan said giving birth was a life-changing experience, and the environment in which it occurred was so important for the well-being of women and their families. “I had my fourth child at the Yarra Junction hospital,” she said. “Having my family around and able to pop in, while I was being cared for by people I knew in a place I was familiar with, enabled me to properly rest while staying connected to my kids and husband.” Ms Brennan said service modelling needed to take into account the shifting needs of local communities. She said the recent Parliamentary Inquiry into Perinatal Services outlined some important priorities for the area, and it was unfortunate that Eastern Health did not make a submission to the inquiry. “I applaud the women who have spoken up for locally based birthing services, and the work of the Save Healesville Hospital Action Group,” she said. “I also strongly support local doctors being able to refer their patients to the hospital and to care for them there.

“A re-elected Labor government will deliver 1100 more nurses and midwives to our public hospitals. “Eastern Health is ideally placed to take advantage of these election commitments for the benefit of Healesville and the surrounding community.” Independent candidate Michelle Dunscombe said she was aware of the community desire for the return of maternity services at the Healesville Hospital. “I will certainly champion for the return of maternity services at the Healesville Hospital and applaud the work of the Save the Healesville Hospital Action Group for their years advocating for improved community health,” she said. “Our communities deserve comprehensive public health services and it’s time to act. “I will work towards maternity services, a 24/7 emergency department and increased mental health services. “We need greater support for all four hospitals in the Eildon Electorate and I commit to working with the hospitals and community for increased funding and services.“ Greens candidate Ken Deacon said that while travelling around Healesville and the Yarra Ranges in the past few weeks and meet-

ing local community members - most who were young mothers - they expressed the need for a maternity wing at Healesville. “Coming from a country area such as Alexandra, where this service has been taken away, mothers are now compelled to drive large distances to either Melbourne or Mansfield, in order to have check-ups if they are pregnant,” he said. “If there are complications, it just adds to the anxiety that is already present when a mother is expecting. “Thus maternity requirements should be closer at hand.” Mr Deacon said his own children had needed services for their arrival. “I realise the importance this service gives to the safety of mother and child,” he said. “There is every chance a mother could be stuck in traffic and have to deal with the birth of a baby while in the vehicle. “A maternity wing in Healesville is therefore needed and as this push is coming from the Healesville Community and the wider surrounds of the Yarra Ranges, the demands of these voices should be honoured.” Liberal incumbent Cindy McLeish said there were a low number of births occurring at

Healesville Hospital when maternity services stopped. She said a capability framework meant that expectant mums who ticked a couple of risk factor boxes had to “go down the road”. Ms McLeish said one of the obstetricians also pulled out and made the service unviable. “I worry that there’s a shortage of GP obstetricians in the state, and that’s what I found during the (Parliamentary) Inquiry (into Perinatal Services),” she said. “The cost of insurance is very high for the doctors. Keeping up their capability is difficult for them. “But that doesn’t mean it can’t be overcome. “There’s a lot of room for Eastern Health to improve in the delivery of pre and post-natal services. “The midwife model is certainly an option but you need the right back-up and it’s costly. “It would be good to be able to birth locally, but it’s still not simple.” She said medical schools should appeal to doctors to become obstetricians, and that if maternity returned to Healesville there should be a system in place whereby doctors kept their skills up through shifts at the Angliss and Box Hill where birth rates were higher.

Carlee Tamme was born at Healesville Hospital. "I still see the same doctor that delivered me. He's in Healesville too," she said. She gave birth to her first child at the Angliss, but her second son arrived at home. "We were living in Wandin. I went into labour about midnight," she said. "I thought I was OK because my last son took me 26 hours to have." Carlee called the hospital in the morning and told them her contractions were still sporadic, ranging from two minutes apart to 20 minutes, so they told her to hold tight. But at 9.11am she called an ambulance and at 9.35am her son entered the world. "I gave birth at the bottom of my staircase with my other three children at home," she said. "My partner was freaking out." The ambulance arrived moments before Carlee gave birth, and took her to the Angliss. She'd given birth to her first child there. At the Angliss, she saw the same doctor and midwife throughout her pregnancy but had

neither when the birth rolled around. "I walked in blindsided," she said. The hospital had also sent her home when she first presented. "I ended up having him five hours later," she said. "Once again I had to get an ambulance. "It was the closest hospital. That's all it came down to. "I didn't want to go to Box Hill because you can never predict the traffic going to Box Hill. "You're only left with one choice. "You don't have more than one option." Carlee said she would have chosen to give birth at Healesville had it been an option. "I think it's more of a local environment," she said. "Everybody knows everyone so you feel more comfortable. "It's more local for people. "If you're going all the way from Waburton ... you have to have a birth plan, but even then things can go wrong. "All it takes is for one thing to go wrong."

‘Bring Bruno back’ is his family’s plea By Derek Schlennstedt The family of Bruno, a four-year-old staffy/ sharpei mix have appealed for his safe return after he was stolen from the Coldstream Animal Aid. Bruno was staying at Animal Aid while his owners were away on holiday and was stolen sometime in the early hours of Friday November 9. Owners Jessica and Jonathon Parcesepe returned from holiday to the distressing news that Bruno had been stolen and Ms Pasecepe said her husband was devastated by the news and described the boisterous pup as being the heart of their family. She told the Mail that the couple had adopted Bruno, three years ago, after foster carers had rescued the dog from death row at a Mildura pound. "He is such a sweet Beautiful dog who touches the hearts of everyone he meets," Mrs Parcesepe said. Mrs Parcesepe said Bruno needed a family who were home most of the time because he suffered from separation anxiety and that without Bruno the family feel lost. . "Jonathon has depression and anxiety as well and Bruno is always the one who comforts him, so without him we're all a bit lost." "He's the heart of our family, and we just want him back." Animal Aid Chief Executive Officer, Mark Menze described Bruno as a beloved family pet and said that staff of the not-for-profit organisation were devastated by this 'cruel act'. Mr Menze appealed to the community for their help in finding Bruno and the pup relies on the assurances he receives from this family and home life and can be startled from loud noises and new places. "We are taking this matter very seriously and have been assisting the Victoria Police Crime Investigation unit who are working diligently to retrieve this dog. "As a not-for-profit animal welfare organ-

Pledge for FEM change Liberal Eildon incumbent Cindy McLeish said new plumbing regulations were affecting fire equipment maintenance for CFA brigades. She said that under the Labor Government's Plumbing Regulations Sunset Review, people who conducted routine maintenance inspections on fire equipment like hydrants and hose reels would be no longer able to carry out inspections if they did not carry a relevant plumbing qualification. Ms McLeish said fire equipment maintenance (FEM) was a commercial operation conducted by CFA volunteers or by private firms. "In the case of the CFA, this service represents an important revenue stream for brigades, which is used to upgrade equipment and amenities used by volunteers," she said. A Liberal Government would amend the regulation to ensure that CFA volunteers and private firms were able to continue to provide FEM services according to their existing nationally-recognised qualifications.

Patricia Piccinini’s Skywhale is returning to the skies and will be floating over the Yarra Valley on 22 November. The lifelike creature was a sculpture by contemporary visual artist Patricia Piccinini and was originally commissioned for Canberra’s 100th birthday. It has since travelled the world, flying in Japan, Ireland and Brazil, and in the early hours of 22 November the Skywhale will take to the skies of the Yarra Valley to mark the opening of Patricia Piccinini and Joy Hester: Through love ... at the TarraWarra Museum of Art. The exhibition looks at Piccinini’s work alongside that of Australian modernist artist Joy Hester, exploring themes of intimacy, relationships and maternal devotion. The Skywhale is a hybrid of mammals symbolising a mother figure, materialised in the form of a hot air balloon.

The Mail recently wrote about the Maroondah Highway and Badger Creek Road intersection and on 28 September reported VicRoads as saying "the infrastructure already in place is appropriate for the road conditions." Whilst the merit of that decision remains debatable, the logic behind it has gone out the window with the pedestrian safety barriers now destroyed and those crossing the road left in a vulnerable state. The destruction of the barriers means that the way pedestrians cross the road has changed and that they have no protection whatsoever from cars turning left into Badger Creek Road from Maroondah Highway. If the same crash were to occur now with a pedestrian stranded in the middle of the road waiting to cross it is likely it would result in serious injury. After learning of the issue, the Mail approached VicRoads and Acting Region-

al Director, Metro South East, Roger Chao said they are aware of the issue and are working on a plan to repair it. "Repairs to the crash barrier at the intersection of Badger Creek Road and Maroondah Highway will be carried out in coming weeks," he said on 16 November. "We carry out regular road inspections right across our network and make it a priority to fix any damage to roads or road infrastructure." In an accompanying statement, VicRoads said that the crash barrier uses specialised fencing which has to be be ordered in and is due to arrive within a fortnight. They also advised that the barriers will be fully repaired by early December, which seems to stretch the definition of 'a priority'. However the statement said they do encourage the community to call them on 131 170 to report hazards, so it might be worth a call?

The Fire Danger Period is now in place in the Yarra Ranges. CFA District 13 acting operations manager Tim Holland said the warmer and drier than average weather over winter and the recent months, as well as below average rainfall, meant residents needed to be prepared for the imminent fire season. "Reducing the amount of available fuel around your property will help that if a fire does occur, it has less chance of taking hold and spreading," he said. "While CFA and its partner agencies Parks Victoria, Forest Fire Management Victoria, and Emergency Management Victoria are doing everything we can to prepare for the bushfire season, we look to the community to use common sense and take responsibility for preventing fires." During the Fire Danger Period (FDP) fires cannot be lit in the open air without a written permit from CFA or a Municipal Fire Prevention Officer. The CFA's Bushfire Community Survey showed 52 per cent of respondents considered the bushfire risk to their home moderate, minor or non-existent. A third said they would only leave when a fire threatened their town or suburb rather than the morning of or night before a day of extreme fire danger.

Tackling sleep problems Sleeping difficulties in children can be highly stressful for kids and families. Poor quality sleep can affect behaviour, immune function and general wellbeing. Addressing the underlying cause(s) of a sleep disorder will go a long way to resolving the problem and help return a sense of wellbeing into the nest. Sleep deprivation affects everyone, negatively. It's associated with poor memory and attention and an increased the risk of anxiety, poor food choices and weight gain. If your child is a poor sleeper it's understandable to be concerned. However, if you take a holistic look at this issue you will find there is a lot that can help your child. Here are some tips and points to consider

Healthy

to begin your child's journey toward better sleep. - Establish a bedtime routine, for example bath 6.30pm, quiet reading until 7pm and a quiet cuddle with mum or dad then lights out. Children respond well to rhythmic cycles. - Dim the lights and avoid the use of screens and blue light devices. This induces the hormone melatonin which kicks in when it's dark

and signals that sleep time has arrived. Candles and orange light do not block melatonin production. Alternately, leaving the drapes open and letting the sun fade into darkness works well. - Keep room temperature no higher than 18.5 degrees as advocated by the US National Sleep Foundation. Our bodies have evolved to sleep better when things cool down. - Limit eating and caffeine beverages around bedtime. This can produce a rush of energy in some children, especially if sugarcontaining foods are taken. - Look after gut health and assess for food intolerance and nutrient deficiency. In chronic conditions, reactivity to food can irritate and cause inflammation which may result in pain or discomfort. Functional abdominal pain and parasitic infection will affect sleep patterns and nutrient deficiencies such as magne-

sium, taurine and GABA may be affecting your child's ability to relax. These concerns are common and should be examined by a qualified health professional. - Address any underlying emotional issues with a qualified practitioner such as anxiety and depression, as these can affect sleep behaviour in numerous ways. Great strategies to counter emotional stress along with flower essences and homoeopathic remedies can help to gently regulate your child's emotional equilibrium. Poor quality sleep is stressful and can hinder your child's wellbeing. A holistic approach considers a range of drivers that may be disrupting your child's sleep. A well-considered approach that looks broadly at the issue can yield excellent outcomes.

Liberals in park promise By Michael Doran If elected at the 24 November election, the Victorian Liberal Party has pledged $500,000 to return Maroondah Reservoir Park to its former glory. On 14 November Liberal Eildon incumbent Cindy McLeish said that the pledge has been made in response to growing community con-

cerns about the poor state of the park. "I am here today to announce that an elected Liberal Nationals Government will inject $500,000 to commence restoration projects to this park," she said. "This was once the premier tourist destination in Healesville for people from Melbourne and locally to visit for the views, picnics and family outings.

"I have had so much feedback from so many people on the current state of the park really letting everybody down. It's about time some money was allocated to lift the standard and make it a place everyone in Healesville and surrounds can be proud of again. "The park's state was raised at a recent candidates forum in Healesville and with funding often being cited as an impediment to the res-

toration we have decided to give it this kickalong. "Parks Victoria have been quite inactive for too long and this funding will give them the opportunity to push this project higher up their list of priorities." The funding will go towards repairing the toilet and kiosk facilities, clean-up of the park, rehabilitating the roads and the car park.

Tony takes the top job By Casey Neill Tony Stevenson is the new Yarra Ranges Mayor. The Chandler Ward representative was elected unopposed at a council meeting on Tuesday 13 November. Cr Richard Higgins nominated Cr Stevenson for the role - the only nomination put forward. “If Cr Higgins hadn’t nominated you, I most certainly would have, outgoing mayor Len Cox said. Cr Stevenson said it was the calibre of his colleagues that encouraged him to be a councillor and made him want to be mayor. “We have a very functional, high-performing council, he said. He paid tribute to Cr Cox, who was elected to the Shire of Lillydale in 1982 and served two terms are president. He became the first mayor of the Yarra Ranges and has since served another three terms. Next year will be his 35th as a councillor. “Cr Cox has been and continues to be an outstanding contributor to our community and to local government, Cr Stevenson said. “Oftentimes he’s as calm as a pussycat, but

on the issues that matter he’s a lion. The new mayor thanked his wife of almost 25 years and their three children for their support. “It’s not a great job being the spouse of a councillor, he said. “Being mayor is an honour but it’s also a demanding role. Cr Stevenson pledged to work hard in the role, listing appointing a new council CEO and building the new civic centre among the greatest challenges ahead. Richard Higgins will serve as Deputy Mayor. “Our council’s moving from strength to strength, he said. “I think it’s a great place to be at the moment.

LETTERS INSTA-PIC An RSL thankyou This is a special mention to the Warburton RSL for their continued efforts to acknowledge the bravery and courage of our past and present service men and women. In particular, to committee volunteers Max and Coral Reynolds for their outstanding and tireless work in preparing the wonderful gardens and picnic area beside the Warburton RSL building in time for Remembrance Day on 11 November. It's well worth a visit by all our local community and visitors. Garry and Glenys Lewis, Warburton

Reporter Derek Schlennstedt captured the river that runs next to the Redwood Forest shining silver in the light. Follow @MailCommunity on Instagram for more of our snaps from across the Yarra Ranges, and tag us in your local photos for a chance to see them in print.

A timber man’s story I was born in Yarra Junction, have grown up in the valley, I left school at age 15, I am now aged 62, I have proudly worked in the timber industry my whole life. My uncle worked in a sawmill at Richmond

where my grandfather and father originally came from. They had a sawmill and a plaster factory situated at McConachy's Road, Gilderoy, during the 1940s. My two sons work in the industry and are fourth-generation. I am so proud of this industry that after 200 years of sustainable managed timber harvesting, we still have these beautiful forests we have cared for and the wildlife that lives within. The whole of Melbourne used to be forested land, yet our forests are harvested and regrown for future generations. I would like to thank the Greens on finding over 800 colonies of leadbeater's possum within our regrowth forest. It goes to show how regrowth forest stimulates new wildlife within. This renewable resource absorbs carbon while growing, then when harvested, carbon is stored forever in beautiful timber, and residual wood is then used for paper that can be recycled. If sustainable, multiple-use native forest all goes to National Park where will all the people be working? I feel so sad to see my fellow timber workers going through the mental stress of the Green attack and the insecurity from the government. The Labor Government used to stand up for the worker but have gone to the Green side purely for votes. Daniel Andrews announced $110,000,000 for plantation development in the last budget, not one dollar has been spent to this day. To transition into plantations 100,000 plus hectares is what is needed to fulfil our current needs, where will this land base be found? At present the government is exporting tons of round log from plantation and native forests to China and Vietnam. This resource could be utilised in Victorian sawmills instead of closing sawmills down and putting people out of work. Peter McConachy, Three Bridges

Risks are everywhere For many decades, the local community had access to surgical services which required stays of more than one night. These services were provided in a safe environment and timely manner and evolved to meet the increasing needs of the growing community. Why are these services no longer available to the local community? Our services are being removed by stealth and the first we know of this is when we endeavour to access services which are no longer available locally. The writing appeared to be on the wall when the bed capacity of the hospital was reduced with the new building. A flash new facility does not provide services - management provides these, or not, as they choose! The staff does an amazing job for the local community in providing a caring and professional environment. 'Risk management' seems to be the catchcry! Have Eastern Health not yet realised that life itself is a series of risks and the only way for them to mitigate all risks, is to provide NO SERVICES, or is that indeed what they are doing to our local services? Fleay’s clean bill of health

New threat joins flies By Michael Doran With the current agricultural focus on QFly activity, Yarra Valley growers have learnt about another serious threat, Spotted Wing Drosophila. At a seminar in Wandin on 30 October, Professor Rufus Isaacs of Michigan State University, said that although the pest was not here, growers need to be aware of the signs and take the threat seriously. "I am not here to try and ruin your day but I am here to talk to you about how to prepare if it does show up," he said. Spotted Wing Drosophila (SWD) is a native of East Asia and is rapidly becoming a global concern, having spread to North America, South America and Europe. The pest is prevalent in most areas of Europe and has gained a significant foothold in Great Britain. In 2008 it was first detected in just one state, California, in the US but by 2018 Dr Isaacs said it had spread to all mainland states. Dr Jessica Lye, of cesar australia, said the project is about "what can we do if this pest makes its way to Australia? Our focus is to develop a contingency plan so the industry is ready if it does come in." SWD attacks a variety of soft-skinned fruits such as strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, cherries and grapes. In Australia berry production is currently estimated to add around $1.6 billion annually to the national economy. The focus of the cesar australia seminars was to increase the chances of detecting SWD and to develop a preparedness and capacity to respond effectively should it emerge in Australia. Bethan Shaw from the National Institute of Agricultural Botany in the UK presented a pro-

gram of options for growers to use. She said, "In the UK it costs around $45 million a year to manage SWD but doing nothing can result in 100 percent crop loss." One of her key messages is to make farms less favourable to SWD by removing the noncrop area they inhabit, like wild blackberry patches. She also said that crop hygiene is important and that it is vital to remove fruit that will not be sold. "Leaving fruit on the ground is not a good idea, it just creates a lovely little buffet of decomposing fruit on the ground under a canopy of ripening fruit." Other measures include netting, weed fabric, harvesting fruit every two to three days, regular inspection and early season trapping to see if SWD is there. Effective practices for the correct disposal of waste or unmarketable fruit was also stressed by both Dr Isaacs and Bethan Shaw. The seminars attracted more than 120 growers and industry personnel and were organised by Dr. Jessica Lyle of cesar australia. Cesar australia is an independent company with a mission to combine sustainability with cutting edge science to achieve positive outcomes for the agricultural sector and wildlife conservation in Australia. The SWD awareness project is funded by Hort Innovation, the grower-owned, not-forprofit research and development corporation for Australian horticulture. More detailed information on the SWD project can be found on www.cesaraustralia. com.

The world's oldest platypus celebrated her 25th birthday at Healesville Sanctuary. Fleay is bucking the trend, with most platypus only living to be 20 years old. She started her special day with a good scratch from her keeper, Dr Jessica Thomas. Despite her age, Fleay is in great health, and daily health checks keep her that way. Keepers pay particular attention to platypus' fat stores in their tails as it gives a good picture of the animal's overall health. Fleay has lived at Healesville Sanctuary since 1993. Her favourite activity is playing in the waterfall in her exhibit - climbing to the top and belly-flopping into her pond. She also loves stripping the bark off branches placed in her tank and her favourite food is blackworms. Fleay is named after former Healesville Sanctuary director, David Fleay, who bred the first platypus ever hatched in captivity in 1943. Fleay's legacy lives on today with Healesville Sanctuary renowned as a world-leader in platypus breeding. Platypus are unique creatures, one of only two montremes (egg-laying mammals) in the world. Visitors to Healesville Sanctuary can see Fleay on display at the World of the Platypus exhibit every day.

QFF—J. Newman & M. Schutze

Select only a manageable sized area to eradicate and revegetate with your chosen plants. Once completed, start a new section. Blackberries will require constant and persistent management, but it gets easier once they are smaller and

Prune trees to a height you can easily net & harvest.

Remove unmanaged host plants. Monitor using fruit fly traps and checking inside fruit.

Use an integrated approach of mechanical removal, targeted chemical application and use of hand-held tools in more sensitive places.

Note: chemicals must be only used according to the label, take extreme care of sensitive crops nearby,

and notify your neighbours.

Encourage the neighbours to join you in the assault on the blackberries!! It’s a

community effort, and like Queensland Fruit Fly, blackberries don’t obey fences and property boundaries!

Report any suspect damage. DO NOT COMPOST infested fruit.

ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS

Monbulk Bowling Club staff and patrons.

A warm and friendly club Come and enjoy what the Monbulk Bowling Club (MBC) has to offer the local community this Christmas. Great food, good hospitality, welcoming staff, local entertainers and the great sport of bowls are just some of the features that are packaged together in this local community club. With a warm and friendly atmosphere, the MBC bistro is perfect for catching up with friends, relaxing after a busy day or celebrating a special occasion with family and friends.

It’s also the perfect solution for when you don’t feel like cooking! The menu has been spruced up for spring and summer with new feature dishes such as Thai beef salad served with Asian slaw and Hokkien noodles, perfect for the lovely spring and summer nights. And why not finish it off with a chocolate and raspberry tart served with pear and anise ice cream? The club says it ‘is proud to offer the best

bar prices in town, with an interesting and varied wine list.’ The MBC also offers regular “Wine of the Month” features. Friday night is a night of entertainment at the Bistro with local artists entertaining patrons while they dine. Why not book a table for family and friends and enjoy a festive celebration? It’s a great way to relax into the weekends and support the local artists. Barefoot bowls ramps up at this time of year at the club with ‘Night Owls’ on Thursday

nights. If lawn bowls sounds like something locals would like to try, friendly club members always welcome new bowlers. The club can help new members get started with equipment and free coaching, or simply a casual night with some locals. For all bookings and enquiries, call 9756 6183. To keep up to date with everything happening at the MBC, like and follow the club’s Facebook page ‘Monbulk Bowling Club and Bistro.’

ENTERTAINMENT

Wilde plays in the park By Michael Doran Yarra Ranges Regional Museum is breaking new ground with its first outdoor performance, Wilde Readings in the Park, on 21 November. The performance compliments the 'The Nightingale and the Rose' exhibition currently running at the museum until 3 February. The readings, presented by John Wood, Michael Veitch and Simon Oats, will be interspersed with guest performances by opera singer Beth Williams, singer Rose Hampton and cellist Thomas Veitch. The night starts with a drink and a tour of the exhibition and then a meander out the back to Melba Park and a picnic, accompanied by some Wilde Readings. The Nightingale and the Rose is one of ten works of Oscar Wilde set to music and the show will be opened by Beth Williams singing the Song of the Nightingale. When not singing opera, Beth is the brewer at Hargreaves Hill Brewery in Lilydale. Rose Hampton, a former student at Little Yarra Steiner School, has written a song of the nightingale exclusively for closing the show. She, along with Beth, will team with Thomas Veitch for the performance. Lead actors, John Wood, Michael Veitch and Simon Oats have been mentoring an aspiring young drama student, Abi Pettigrew who is having her first NIDA audition following this show. Abi, who completed Year 12 at Mt Lilydale Mercy College, will perform a reading of The Happy Prince, another classic Wilde work. Tanya Burne is performing an excerpt from the Ballad of Reading Goal, which is usually performed by a male-only cast so this is a rare and exciting prospect for the night.

John Wood with Michael Veitch will be reading Oscar Wilde in Melba Park. 187587 This work was written by Wilde in 1897 after spending two years of hard labour in Reading Goal for homesexual offences. A passage from this poem was chosen as the epitaph for Wil-

de's tomb in Paris. The night starts at 6.30pm at the Yarra Ranges Museum with tickets at $25, including the first drink at the Museum. Tickets and an-

tipasto picnic packs can be ordered online at boxoffice@yarraranges.vic.gov.au Drinks will be available however BYO alcohol is not permitted.

New Italian event in the valley is one for the Romans By Casey Neill All things Italy are descending on Healesville and Warburton. The Ciao Yarra Valley Ciao event will culminate in the Festa di via Verde in Healesville on Saturday 1 December from noon to 6pm. There'll be roving musicians and performers, bocce and tomato throwing competitions, plenty of pasta and more. Festival-goers can wave a flag to welcome the classic cars that arrive during Targa Florio. The Targa Florio Australian Tribute is an event for classic cars produced in the years between 1907 and 1976. Cars will compete over four days on Victoria's open roads at regulated speed. As part of the event, there will be 56 trials across the four days, with day four competing in the Yarra Valley. The weekend before, on 24 and 25 November, the Giro Della Donna cycling event will return to Warburton.

The course is unique in terms of the amount of climbing, the 13km of gravel, and the truemountain summit finish. On Saturday there'll be a village expo area at the Warburton Golf Club, a 65km Gravel Giro, kids' entertainment, a VIP dinner and entertainment in the village. On the Sunday will be the 125km Giro Della Donna, and entertainment in the village. Event spokesperson Brook Powell said the Ciao Yarra Valley Ciao event is piggybacking on these two events with Italian flavour. "You can't get to the Targa Florio in Italy anymore. It's fully subscribed," she said. "In the Yarra Valley there are strong connections with the Italian culture." She pointed to berry farmers, brewers and orchardists. "The Italians have really helped mould our food and wine culture here," Ms Powell said. Check visityarravalley.com.au/ciao-yarravalley-ciao for more event details.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald Starring Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston and Jude Law Rated M

12405760-SN48-18

Fri

The Giro Della Donna and Targa Florio are both on their way.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald has some charming elements smothered under a slack, confused plot. The film has resplendent visual imagination and some enchanting moments of human compassion and animal awe. Eddie Redmayne and Katherine Waterston have endearing interplay as they rekindle their affection, and Jude Law conveys an affable gravitas as legendary wizard Albus Dumbledore. But delving deeper, The Crimes of Grindelwald feels like a mortally muddled warm-up for future stories. The film devotes much of its time to a pointless red-herring involving Credence (Ezra Miller), an angst-ridden magically-devastating boy. The second act wallows in exposition,

suggesting and then quickly ruling out a dark connection between Credence and Ministry of Magic agent Leta Lestrange (Zoe Kravitz). Leta's repressed grief over her past - while conveyed with pained grace by Kravitz - is just padding for the thin plot. The heroes are rarely placed in any real danger, and little is accomplished by the end, especially with regard to Credence's development: he isn't the arbitrary person the film implied he might be, but he's exactly the dangerous force we knew he was from the previous film. David Yates is an otherwise competent filmmaker, but The Crimes of Grindelwald contains some shockingly amateurish scene direction - especially in the confusing climactic stand-off - and distracting shaky-cam. The Crimes of Grindelwald is a intermittently charming but plodding and unfulfilling mess.

NEWS

Reservoir rendezvous By Michael Doran The state of the Maroondah Reservoir Park is such a sore point for many Healesville locals that the state Liberal party has pledged half a million dollars to restore it. However not everyone who goes there thinks so poorly of the park. John Burgess, who lives 100 kilometres away in Melton, has been visiting the park every month or so for the last 30 years. He said he found the dam on a random drive in the hills and took the road down to the park to find out what was there. "I saw the sign for the park and as soon as I got here it made me feel calm and peaceful," he said. "I've kept coming over here ever since because it's a special day out for us as we go to the Healesville Sanctuary and then come here." If birds could talk then they they would be on first-name terms with John and his partner, Joanne Burslem. "As soon as the car stops all the birds come over to us, even before we get out of the car," he said. "There are all sorts here, cockatoos, galahs, king parrots, corellas, and lorikeets." Part of his popularity with the birds is probably due to his bag of sunflower seeds that soon has the birds eating out of his hand, especially the king parrots. "The birds are so soft and gentle, they just sit on my hand and open up the seeds, eat the centre and then throw away the pods. It is amazing how trusting they are and how they remember us." "This place is amazing and no one seems to

You can bring the family and not have to worry about anything, everything is just so safe and peaceful here." So whilst facebook may be awash with negative comments on the park, these two make the 200 km round trip across Melbourne because to them it is a haven of beauty and tranquillity. Beauty really is in the eye of the beholder.

By Michael Doran On 1 October Ryan Fowler ran out of Melbourne and stopped running 26 days and 1027 kilometres later in Sydney. In that time he promoted awareness of the need for more children’s hospices around Australia and raised more than $55,000 for the cause. His running days ranged from 30 kms to his longest day covering 58km between Yarra Glen and Yea. Each day brought its own challenges but with Ryan’s thoughts focussed on his late son Rio and other children who face pain and suffering he ploughed on. As would be expected in a run of this distance,he struggled through shin soreness and blisters on blisters but any thoughts of not completing the distance were set quickly dismissed. Along the long roads he was sometimes joined by others for a day or just a few kilometres, stopped by farmers, and people driving by and wanting a chat. He was swooped by magpies and had curious cows running over to the

The two-day battles begin By Chris Anderson Two-day cricket finally arrived for the premier grades across the Yarra Valley, and the players didn't disappoint. Day one saw most games feature some dour batting against some disciplined bowling, something the game is always searching for. In DJ Strachan Shield, Warburton-Millgrove and Seville battled out an even day's play where both teams would be reasonably happy with the current standing of the game. Warburton-Millgrove batted first and managed to navigate their way through their full allotted overs against some excellent bowling from the Blues. Liam Barnard and Finn Saurine gave the home team a solid foundation to build upon with a well-compiled second-wicket century partnership. Barnard enjoyed his return to the game, top scoring for the Burras with a well-compiled 64, while Saurine showed great maturity in one of his best first-eleven innings with a half-century of his own. Neither player could kick on to the magical three figures, and with that the innings lost a bit of its momentum against some excellent bowling from the visitors. Mark Sandfort led the attack with fantastic figures of 6/77. By no means did the Burras fold, but regular wickets stifled their ability to kick on to a greater score. When stumps were drawn, WarburtonMillgrove had compiled a very useful 9/214. The score will be tough for the Blues as their strength lies in their batting, while WarburtonMillgrove will test their patience with some disciplined bowling. Seville will rely on their top order if they are to chase the total down with captain Aitkins holding the key. The Burras will stretch them, with their slow bowlers testing their patience with their experience and execution. If Seville can get themselves into the contest, then this promises to be close finish. Yarra Junction and Wandin played a similar day's play, as Yarra Junction batted out their overs to post a challenging chase for the Bulldogs, finishing on 9/235. Both teams held their nerve for the majority of the day, but would have some disappointment they couldn't capitalise on opportunities along the way. Yarra Junction has their opportunities to

post a score approaching 300, but regularly gave their wickets away when set. This was highlighted by no less than five batsmen finishing in the thirties. Had a couple of these batsmen kicked in, the story could've been a whole lot different for both sides. To Wandin's credit, they fought all the way and stayed in the contest with regular wickets, but couldn't quite break the innings their way with a quick follow-up wicket allowing Yarra Junction to post useful partnerships along the way. Young star Ethan Alderman led his team with the ball, posting excellent figures of 5/57. On paper alone, Yarra Junction are in front of this contest with runs on the board and a well-oiled bowling outfit. However, there is a saying in cricket that if one team can post the score, then the conditions are there for their opposition to chase it down. Like Seville, if Wandin can get into the chase early and build confidence, they have the ability to chase the target. In the final game in the top grade, Mount Evelyn holds the reins despite Healesville making them work hard for their rewards. Healesville won the toss and elected to bat first, and got themselves into the contest with a dogged opening partnership from Brenton Damrow and Max Minney. With the opening partnership broken, a glut of wickets fell in the lead-up to tea. Kane Jones and Gareth Fraser showed their talents through the middle order, picking a whole through the top order, nullifying the foundations set. From there the innings battled to find some momentum. To Healesville's credit, they didn't throw their wickets away and were quite determined in their approach. Dale Senior (45) continued his good form with the bat, and with some solid support from the lower order they pushed the score out to 121. With an early close to the innings, Mount Evelyn took the opportunity to take some ground before stumps on day one, and they executed a telling blow. Led by Jesse Fraser's brisk 33, the home team finished on 1/53. In RA Finger Trophy action, Mount Evelyn trumped their first-eleven counterparts as they secured first innings points in day one against Healesville. Pat Heaphy (5/30) and Robbie Wilson

Yarra Ranges Athletics By Jamie Strudley On Saturday 17 November, 33 Little Athletes from Yarra Ranges Athletics competed against the other clubs from the Eastern Metro Region at the Doncaster Athletics Track. In an action-packed morning of competition, many of the club's younger athletes were competing in relays for the first time. This didn't stop them qualifying for finals and vying for top positions in many races. The afternoon saw the older athletes from the under-12 to under-14 groups competing, every runner raced hard to support their team mates. Racing was in a range of formats, with 4x100m, 4x200m, the exciting medley events were a favourite. The mixed gender races allowed more of the Yarra Ranges athletes to compete. The club came away with one silver medal in the under-10 girls medley team, and three bronze medals in the under-9 girls 4x100m, under-9 mixed gender 4x200m and the under-10 mixed gender 4x100m. Many teams qualified for finals and some very close fourth places for our teams after some fantastic running by all of our under-8 to under-14 year old age groups. Teams now eagerly await the announcement of teams that have qualified to compete at the State Relay Championships to be held in December. Brilliant conditions for athletics greeted 28 MAIL

athletes and officials from all across Victoria when they arrived at Morrison Reserve on Saturday afternoon for Round 6 of the Athletics Victoria Shield competition. More than 500 athletes of all ages and abilities competed in graded events, and filled the track to race, jump and throw in a range of disciplines. The highlight of the day was the first ever pole vault competition to be held at the Yarra Ranges Athletics venue. With past Commonwealth Games athlete Joel Pocklington in the field, a high-quality venue record has been established in both the men's (4.90m) and women's (3.55m) event. He was joined by other Commonwealth Games representatives including long jump silver medallist Brooke Stratton and heptathlete Celeste Mucci. The Yarra Ranges Athletics club members supported their home round with high numbers of athletes and helpers to make the afternoon an all-round success. Congratulations and welcome went to Amy Pearce who took the opportunity to run with the club's seniors for the first time, and was full of smiles during and after. With strong performances across all grades, the Yarra Ranges teams have maintained their season top of the ladder positions in the open men's and women's Division 2, and the under-18 men. Any interested athletes can contact the club via join@yarrarangesathletics.org.au.

(3/14) skittles the home side for 72, which was promptly passed before stumps, with the Mounters finishing at 1/81 and in an excellent position to chase outright points. Match of the round has to be the contest between Gruyere and Woori Yallock in a battle for top billing in Finger Trophy. Gruyere batted first and struggled to 139 against some excellent bowling, particularly from coach Adam Dunn who finished with 6/32. Matt Tilney (43) continued his good form, but with Woori Yallock already on 1/44, you can only see this contest going the Tigers way. Seville posted 9/143 against Yarra Junction, but that might not be enough as the Eagles have already knocked off 39 of the runs with the loss of only one wicket. Caleb Frankovic (43) and Andy Dipietro (39) led from the front for Seville, but they lacked any support. Yarra Glen girls can play too Hawks young gun James Sicily and Melbourne Vixen Rahni Samason will be attending the Yarra Glen Junior Football and Netball Club registration day. The YGJFNC event will run from 4pm to 6pm on Sunday 25 November at the Yarra Glen Reserve. The club will have girls' teams in under-10, under-12, under-14 and under-16 next season. "This will provide a great pathway for girls in the area who have an interest in playing Australian Rules, however it hasn't always been this easy for talented girls to find their way if they have wanted to continue to play beyond under-12," president Bernie Wood said. "We are really looking forward to the season. "We have great female-friendly change

rooms at Yarra Glen and have a team of dedicated coaches to ensure all girls who have an interest in the game can follow their passion and continue to play if they want to. "We had a great year last year fielding teams in every age group (except under-18) and our under-14 Jetstream girls (Yarra Glen and Coldstream) took out the flag." Wood said the club was planning to field an under-18 girls' team this year. "We also offer junior netball in under-9, under-11, under-13, under-15 and under-17 so we have plenty of opportunities for girls to become active and participate in sport during 2019," he said. Meet the committee and the coaches at the event or register online by searching for Yarra Glen Junior Football Netball Club.

Close finish in corporates There were no pennant results from Healesville Bowling Club this week due to the Victorian Open being played. The Corporate Challenge finals were played last Wednesday 14 November under gloomy skies and drizzling rain. On the final night of this six-week block, the finalists were very keen to play whereas the rest of the games were called off due to rain. The rain eventually stopped and thanks to the club's new lights, the finals were able to

eventually get underway and what exciting finals they were, with a very good class of bowls being played from the so-called amateurs from local businesses. There were 28 in all at the start and it came down to the last four. The winners were Total Shutters, with runners-up Pro Style Carpentry, third Above Board Plastering and fourth Steelers. All who played are keen to play on again in the next one, which starts in February. mailcommunity.com.au

Court upgrade on the way Works are almost complete at Seville Recreation Reserve to allow Seville Tennis Club to play night games. Yarra Ranges Council is converting all six courts from two hard courts and four sand courts to synthetic grass surfaces, with drainage improvements, fencing and new LED lights installed on all. The project which started in July this year and is expected to be complete by early next year. Yarra Ranges Mayor Tony Stevenson said the upgrade would mean the club could play in all weather conditions and expand their night games to run additional competitions in the evening. "It's wonderful to see the court renewal coming together," he said. "Tennis is a very social and competitive

game and it's no surprise that more residents are wanting to take it up." Seville Tennis Club president Ray Van Weert said the synthetic grass courts would mean games could continue following any rain. "Before, if it was wet, we couldn't play on the court at all," he said. "It was also very dry and dusty coming into summer. "The new synthetic grass courts are easy to maintain and easy to use all year around." Mr Van Weert said the group would look into playing in the Lilydale District completion now that all six courts had lighting, which was up to competition standard. "Converting all courts to the one playing surface means the club can hold tournament matches," he said.

Nursey’s day to remember with all the points racked up By Ron Hottes Old evergreen Ossie McClay racked up 40 impressive points to take home the voucher in Warburton Golf Club’s Wed 14 November stableford competition. President Hall snared the runner-up prize with 38 points. Balls extended to 37 only. Nearest the pin winners were ‘Old-ManRiver’ Hubbard on the ninth and Secretary Barratt on the 15th. In the week’s twilight competition, Darren Wyatt won the night with 23 exceptional points. He also scored an eagle on the 10th to add to his prize tally.

Steve Noonan was runner-up with 22 points. Players who scored 18 or better can collect a ball. Nearest the pins went to Andy Sweet on the 12th and to rising star Seth Spencely on the 15th. On Saturday 17 November was the stroke and third round of the C/Championships. This was also the second round for the ladies and super-star Ms Nursey made a significant move in the nett event, winning the day with a superb nett 65. Off a handicap of 11, Meredith had a matching gross score to Kim Kennedy, but KK is off a handicap of - one! Meredith won A-Grade also. As if that wasn’t enough, she squeezed an eagle in as well for a day to remember.

B-Grade went to another junior graduate, Liam Kay, with a nett 72. Paul Kennedy was the runner-up on the day with a solid nett 69. Balls extended to 74. Nearest the pins went to Danny Fox on the third, Shane Campbell on the fifth, Hatty on the ninth and to Junior Cross on the 12th and 15th. The Open is still being led by Paul Mason, followed by Jon Cross, then Willo. B-Grade sees Danny Fox in the lead, closely pursued by Happy Gilmore and Clint Toohey. In C-Grade, there’s a tight struggle with Ossie McClay and Paul Long chasing secondround leader Tex Van Der Kooi. Liam Kay is the leading junior, but Seth Spencely has the nett event all but wrapped-up.

This week’s crossword proudly sponsored by

Kim Kennedy is leading the Ladies’ Open, but Meredith Nursey’s excellent round of nett 65 sees her ahead in the nett event.

MOTORING

Stay safe on the freeway

The new Corolla sedan.

Sedan is next-gen The super-rigid structure is complemented by a lower centre of gravity, new multi-link rear suspension and totally revised front suspension to produce a sportier, more engaging drive. Wider tracks combine with the unchanged 2700mm wheelbase to improve the Corolla sedan's on-road stance and stability while the 35mm lower bonnet affords excellent forward visibility. The driver's hip point has been lowered and moved rearward for improved comfort and control while helping to lower the vehicle's centre of gravity and improve frontrear weight distribution. These changes, along with the reconfigured lower beltline, slimmer instrument panel, slimmer A-pillars and repositioned side mirrors, contribute to greater visibility and an

open, airy feeling. The engine features high-pressure direct injection and low-pressure port fuel injection with VVT-iE intelligent variable valve-timing on the intake side and VVT-i on the exhaust. VVT-iE uses an electric motor instead of oil pressure to control the variable valve timing. These technologies, together with a longer stroke, higher compression ratio and reduced internal friction, yield maximum thermal efficiency of 40 per cent - among the highest in the world for a passenger-car engine. A new six-speed intelligent manual gearbox offers downshift rev-matching control. Buyers can also specify a new DynamicShift CVT with 10 sequential shift steps and a sport mode.

Toyota has revealed a next-generation Corolla sedan. The new four-door version made its global debut at Auto Guangzhou in China more than a year ahead of its expected arrival in Australian showrooms. Corolla sedan will share many of the features and technology of the Corolla hatch launched in Australia during August, including an all-new 2.0-litre petrol engine that produces 21 per cent more power than its predecessor yet delivers better fuel efficiency. A highly rigid TNGA (Toyota New Global Architecture) platform improves torsional rigidity by 60 per cent, including increased use of ultra-high-strength steels and new structural adhesive technology for enhanced body rigidity and occupant safety.

VicRoads says motorists who break down on the freeway should exit at the earliest opportunity. "Whether you've got a blown tyre, run out of fuel, or your car's making strange grinding noises, breaking down is frustrating," VicRoads said. "If you're on a freeway, it can also be extremely hazardous." Drivers who can't exit the freeway should find a safe spot to pull over - like an emergency lane. "Where there is no emergency lane, move as far to the left on the road as possible," VicRoads advises. "Make sure your vehicle can be seen by other drivers. "Turn on your hazard lights and activate your headlights." Pedestrians and freeway traffic are a dangerous combination, with potentially tragic consequences. "Only get out of your vehicle if it's safe to do so, making sure you check for traffic first," VicRoads said. "Use the passenger-side door, if possible. "If it's not safe to get out of the car, stay in your vehicle with your seat belt on." Drivers should call emergency services, roadside assistance or the VicRoads Traffic Management Centre on 13 11 70 if required. They should remember to only use a handheld mobile phone if their car is at a complete stop and parked. Drivers can also call the VicRoads Traffic Management Centre on 13 11 70 if they can't get their car off the road. Report any hazards to the VicRoads Traffic Management Centre on 13 11 70, 24 hours a day.
