MORE TO LOVE The editor’s desk I had the chance to catch up with a few of the stalwarts of the Killarney and District Historical Society for this week's cover story (see pages 4 & 5). This weekend the 50th anniversary of the Killarney Tornado will be commemorated and many people both remaining locals and those who moved away afterwards - will have mixed feelings. I completely understand that for some people the memories of that devastating night in November 1968 and its aftermath are still raw even five decades on, and that they may not be comfortable attending the public events which have been planned. The real point of the commemorations is to honour the volunteer labourers - from Killarney and beyond - who worked in the weeks and months afterwards to re-build, indeed to re-birth the town which was almost completely destroyed in next to no time that night. We know how our close-knit rural communities in this part of the world band together in times of natural disaster and adversity. The effort which went into putting Killarney back on the map after the Tornado is well worth commemorating. Jeremy Sollars

BASIL NOLAN JNR REMEMBERED... BY JEREMY SOLLARS Much-loved thoroughbred industry figure and devoted father of four Basil Nolan Jnr was laid to rest at Eden Gardens Lawn Cemetery after a funeral service at St Mary's Catholic Church in Warwick last Thursday 15 November. Mr Nolan, 45, died as a result of a farming accident on his family property Raheen Stud late on the evening of Tuesday 6 November. His funeral was attended by an estimated 2000 people, including racing industry leaders from around Australia, along with former Nudgee College friends and longstanding friends from the Warwick rugby league community, of which he was a stalwart. The eulogy was given by his lifelong best mate Wayne Carey, and his sister Sally Conn gave her own moving tribute to a man adored by his family and respected in his community. Both spoke of his love for his wife and "soulmate" Natalie and their four children

COUNCILLOR COST FOR 17-18 BY JEREMY SOLLARS - Basil, Lily, James and William - and his passion for and skill with horses, along with his generosity to those less fortunate than himself and his happy nature. His son Basil gave a reading from the letter of St Paul to the Corinthians, while his daughter Lily and son James were among other family members who offered prayers of the faithful.

The Southern Downs Regional Council's 2017-2018 Annual Report has outlined remuneration and expenses paid to Mayor Tracy Dobie and councillors for last financial year. Cr Dobie earned a base salary of $125,000, with an employee superannuation contribution of $7500 and an employer contribution of $15,000. Deputy Mayor Jo McNally's salary was $76, 130 - with employee and employer superannuation contributions of $4687 and $9375 respectively. Each of the seven other councillors earned a salary of $66,410, with employee and employer superannuation contributions of $3984 and $7969 respectively. Only four councillors were reimbursed with telephone allowance - Cr Marika McNichol ($1200), Cr Neil Meiklejohn ($828), Cr Vic Pennisi ($1200) and Cr Yve Stocks ($780). Councillor expenses for 2017-2018 were as follows (with expenses including items such as conference registrations, meals, travel and 'professional development') Mayor Tracy Dobie - $2889 Deputy Mayor Jo McNally - $872 Cr Cameron Gow - $350 Cr Rod Kelly - $4987 Cr Marika McNichol - $162 Cr Neil Meiklejohn - $1486 Cr Vic Pennisi - $350 Cr Yve Stocks - $787 Cr Sheryl Windle - $350 The annual report also shows "compensation" paid to "key management personnel" for the 2017-2018 financial year totalled $3,095,000. A council spokesman said the figure represented a combination of "allowances, wages, superannuation and long service leave entitlements". ●

A huge honour guard formed in the courtyard of St Mary's as he was brought out of the church by the pall bearers, his son Basil, Vitalijus Klumbys, Daniel Conn, brother Tim Nolan, Anthony Flint and Wayne Carey. A gathering was held later to celebrate Mr Nolan's life at the Warwick Cowboys Clubhouse in Queens Park. ●

PEDESTRIANS MUST GIVE WAY: A REMINDER BY JEREMY SOLLARS New 'speed humps' at a number of intersections in Warwick are said to be causing confusion for both motorists and pedestrians. The Southern Downs Regional Council has moved to clarify that the new measures are not formal pedestrian crossings and are in place to slow vehicles down and "improve the reaction time" of drivers. The council has said pedestrians must give way to vehicles but has stopped short of saying it will install signage to reinforce that rule. "Five raised medians - 'speed humps' - were recently installed on streets in Warwick's CBD," a council spokeswoman told the Free Times. "Four were constructed at the intersection of Guy and Grafton Streets, while one was installed in Guy St near the intersection with Fitzroy Street, with $76,780 allocated to the works from the Federal Government's Black Spot Program. "Black Spot projects target those road locations where crashes are occurring. "By funding measures such as traffic signals and roundabouts at dangerous locations, the program reduces the risk of crashes. "The raised medians are intended to slow

down traffic which significantly improves the reaction time of drivers and as a result reduces the rate of accidents and the severity of injuries incurred as a result of traffic incidences. "The project qualified for Black Spot funding as there were previously three traffic accidents resulting in hospitalisation at these locations and one traffic incident resulting in a fatality, highlighting a need to improve road safety in these areas. "The crossings have been installed to enhance the pre-existing physical pedestrian

"These measures are designed to reduce the entry speed of vehicles to crossings which naturally creates more reaction time to motorists should a pedestrian enter the crossing without caution. 50 YEARS

Killarney and District Historical Society president, secretary and treasurer – Rob Hall, Jeanette Braithwaite and Angela Phillips with the Heritage Centre’s Tornado display.

SINCE THE TORNADO BY JEREMY SOLLARS

C

ountry town spirit and grit will be celebrated this weekend at Killarney, 50 years after the 'Scenic Gem of the Downs' was almost wiped off the map by a freak storm, later classed as a tornado. On the night of Friday 22 November 1968 many of the town's residents were inside the old Capitol Theatre enjoying the school's annual speech night - unaware of the devastation about to be visited on them when what some locals still refer to as "the blow" struck around 8pm. But it was the fact that so many of the locals were inside one of Killarney's sturdiest buildings which perhaps meant only one life was lost - that of a young girl. The Killarney and District Historical Society has been the driving force behind commemorations of the 50th anniversary of the Tornado, which include a church service tonight, Thursday 22 November, and

a dinner on Saturday night at the Killarney Recreation Centre. Society treasurer Angela Phillips said locals bravely held the doors of the Capitol Theatre closed at the height of the tornado before stumbling outside to be met by "a scene of total devastation", with some 200 homes destroyed along with many of the town's key buildings. "There was rubble everywhere and no electricity to light the way," Angela said. "It was fortunate that so many people had been in the theatre that night. "Most of the buildings in the town's main street had been destroyed, those that were still standing had received significant damage. "All the churches, the Show Pavilion and most of the buildings along Acacia Street were completely flattened. "In the light of day, the town looked like a war zone. "In the aftermath, the community came

together to rebuild their town. "The Army, electricians, telephone workers and many volunteers came and started the mammoth clean-up. "The Bowls Club became an outlet for food parcels and clothes, all of which had been donated. "The Co-op repaired its damage and became a very important source of materials to repair Killarney. "The abattoir also kept going and kept the town afloat. "Many people whose businesses or houses had been completely destroyed left the town to find a future elsewhere, but many other families rebuilt their homes and were part of Killarney's regrowth. "All the churches and the halls such as the Show Pavilion, the RSL, and the Masonic Lodge were rebuilt. "The school was repaired and the children were able to go back to class the following Monday.

The new Tornado memorial plaque and sandstone plinth will be officially unveiled on Sunday in Canning Park. "Eventually Killarney became a town again. "Killarney has become a tourist town with many people visiting and admiring our scenic attractions. "Our survival and growth is testament to the many people in the community who worked tirelessly to rebuild our little town and the community spirit that continues to this day."

The ''Scenic Gem of the Downs" was all but wiped off the map.

In the Tornado's aftermath...

MIXED FEELINGS ... Killarney and District Historical Society secretary Jeanette Braithwaite said people were looking to this weekend's Tornado commemorations with understandably mixed feelings. "I think people are excited at the prospect of maybe catching up with people they haven't seen for some time - we have a lot of former locals and others travelling from out of town," Jeanette told the Free Times. "Obviously for some people this weekend will bring back a lot of unpleasant memories and some people don't want to have anything to do with it. "It's really all about showing respect for the army of volunteers who came together to rebuild Killarney. "Apprentices volunteered their time along with some Vietnam veterans who had not long come home and tradies who were working on the King George Square car park in Brisbane, alongside the locals. "We want people to share their stories at

the dinner - it was a true grass roots effort." · Historic photos of the Killarney Tornado aftermath on page 14 ...

The Killarney and District Historical Society is finalising arrangements with the Southern Downs Regional Council in relation to leasing the Killarney Heritage Centre. The building was purchased earlier this year by the council from local private owners. Gambling benefit grants have enabled re-stumping and re-wiring of the building which has formerly housed a bank, a produce store and a real estate agency. The Historical Society has around 50 active members and more are always welcomed. The Society can assist with family history research and continues to add to its collection of historic memorabilia from the Killarney district - donation of items is welcomed. The Society is particularly interested in researching the former railway line to Killarney and would love to hear from anyone with information. IN CUSTODY A man has appeared in the Warwick Magistrates Court charged with burglary, rape and stealing after an incident which is alleged to have taken place in the early hours of Tuesday 6

equipped with the latest satellite and other technology. The load originated in Newcastle with the initial driver changing over in Coffs Harbour with the driver who later died around 7.30pm on the Tuesday night. The deceased driver would have been due to pull over for a rest around 12.30am, with a 10am timeslot to resume his trip the following morning. Local truckies have expressed surprise and anger that the vehicle and its driver had been left lying below the motorway undetected for such an extended period of time. For many long-haul drivers having a crash late at night and not being found quickly is one of their greatest fears. The Free Times this week asked Lindsay Australia to comment on why it appeared that GPS/satellite tracking systems had not alerted the company to the fact that one of its vehicles had been stationary in an odd location for as long November at a Warwick residence. The man cannot be named in order to protect the identity of the alleged female victim, who police have said was known to the man. He appeared in court last Friday 16 November and was remanded in custody to appear again on Monday 28 January.

"Our thoughts are with family, friends and colleagues of the driver who has tragically passed away following an incident on the Logan Motorway, south of Brisbane," Mr Lindsay said. "The exact circumstances surrounding the incident are yet to be established and we continue to work closely with relevant authorities. "Our immediate priority is to provide the best possible assistance to the family and colleagues of the deceased. "No further information is available at this time."

Acting Sen Sgt Reeve said he was "not surprised" the truck had gone unnoticed by motorists travelling 100 kilometres an hour on the motorway. "Where the truck has become stationary, it would most certainly be out of vision for the local motorists and it was identified by the person who contacted police this morning," he said. "They identified it by walking through (the area)." Acting Senior Sergeant Reeve said police were liaising with Transport and Main Roads to receive any CCTV footage of the highway. The crash site was discovered the following morning around 10.40am by a person walking past the area at Tanah Merah, near Loganholme. The 57-year-old was driving a primemover with a loaded trailer and traveling from Coffs Harbour to Brisbane on a regular work route. Police said the truck, believed to be carrying produce, was heading west on the motorway at Tanah Merah at 11.30pm before it crashed over the Slacks Creek Bridge and descended around 10 metres onto the surface underneath. The Queensland Police Forensic Crash Unit is yet to release details of their investigations into what led to the truck leaving the motorway. Lindsay Australia has a depot at Stanthorpe, with the company's head office located at Acacia Ridge in Brisbane's south. It is understood the prime mover was only around six months old and the trailer a couple of years old, with the truck

CALL GOES OUT FOR TRAFFIC LIGHTS BY JEREMY SOLLARS Business owners near the new Bunnings Warehouse in Warwick have vented their frustration at the Department of Main Roads and the Southern Downs Regional Council over new traffic islands at the Albion Street junctions of Condamine Street and Albert Street. The traffic islands were paid for by Bunnings and were part of the conditions of approval placed by the council on the hardware giant. Signage on the islands indicates to drivers leaving both streets that exit is 'Leftturn only' but some motorists are blatantly ignoring the rule. But the new traffic arrangements are also causing problems for businesses including Beaurepaires and Soapy's Carwash. Beaurepaires owner Jason King told the Free Times the new traffic island at Condamine Street was steering heavy vehicles away from his business, after they were previously able to access his site from Condamine Street after turning off the highway. "I'd say I've lost about 50 per cent of my business since these islands went in," Jason said. "None of us were consulted by either the council or by Main Roads. "The obvious solution is a set of traffic lights, which I'm sure Bunnings would've paid for. Continued to page 12.

Businesses say Main Roads and the council failed to consult with them over the intersection.

NEWS From page 10 "As it is now people are just disregarding the left-turn only signs and either turning right onto the highway or going straight across. "There's also the issue of any heavy vehicles which do access Condamine Street, say to get to Bunnings, will probably go down past Warwick East State School and onto Fitzroy Street to access the traffic lights to get back on the highway. "Or they'll go the other way, down to Victoria Street and past Cafe Jacqui's and turn right there to get back out on the highway." Jason said he had met with council officers who had buck-passed the matter to the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) who in turned had advised the issue was a council one. "The people I spoke to at TMR admitted they did not inspect the location or consult with any of the businesses in the area," he said. Soapy's Carwash owner Paul Kelly said his business was down by around 25 per cent as a result of the new traffic islands. "I certainly wasn't consulted and I would agree a set of lights is what's needed," he said. The business owners also hold concerns that heavy vehicles leaving the Bunnings site will detour through the Warwick CBD - along Fitzroy and Palmerin Streets - in order to access the highway leading north out of town. The Free Times observed at least one heavy vehicle use that route on the day

we visited the businesses, along with a number of motorists ignoring the leftturn only sign on Condamine Street. Damage to a power pole on the corner of Condamine and Albion Streets from heavy vehicles turning left is also evident. ●

COUNCIL RESPONSE ... A council spokesman said the intersection at the corner of Albion and Condamine Streets "was designed for 19 metre semi-trailers". "Heavier vehicles, such as B Doubles, are not currently permitted access to Condamine Street," he said. "Businesses requiring permits should direct all enquiries to the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR). "Heavy vehicles like B Doubles have access to businesses in this area as long as the vehicles enter and exit the premises via Albion Street. "The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) approved the leftonly exit from Condamine and Albert Streets based on findings in the Traffic Impact Assessment. "As part of the development application process for the Bunnings site, the developer notified the community of the proposed development which included making the Traffic Impact Assessment available. "SDRC engaged with the community and businesses in the area of the Bunnings site and provided them with the opportunity to share feedback,

voice concerns or object to any part of the proposed development."

TMR RESPONSE ... A departmental spokeswoman said Condamine Street is "a local council road". "Transport and Main Roads (TMR) placed conditions on the development application for the new Bunnings development, related to impacts on the state-controlled road network (Cunningham Highway)," the spokeswoman said. "The assessment concluded traffic signals were not warranted at this intersection, with the current left in/ left out arrangements continuing to provide safe access. "Heavy vehicles are encouraged to use the signalised Fitzroy Street intersection to access the highway. "The ability for heavy vehicles to turn left in and out of Condamine and Albert Streets has not been impacted. "It is illegal for B-double vehicles to enter these streets as they do not form part of an approved B-double route. "Consultation was not undertaken with nearby businesses as this development does not impact their approved access."

LISTER ON CASE State MP for Southern Downs James Lister has inspected the location and agrees a set of traffic lights may well be the answer.

Mr Lister told the Free Times he had been "approached by businesses near this intersection who are unhappy with the changes and the absence of consultation". "They tell me that the new traffic arrangements severely restrict the movements of trucks in the area, and also discourage the movement of customers from the other side of Albion Street. "I visited them and it was obvious to me that their businesses are being negatively impacted by the changes. "One example is Beaurepaires which previously did a lot of business serving B-double trucks. "The new traffic islands on Condamine Street effectively prevent truck access which is a real hit on this and other neighbouring businesses. "We need to look after small businesses, not make it harder for them. "They employ the majority of Australians and it is their hard work and investment which is the bedrock of our economy. "I will be writing to the department of Transport and Main Roads to ask for a meeting to discuss how we can keep the traffic flowing for these businesses. "Perhaps traffic lights are the answer?" · What do you think? Send a letter to the editor at newsdesk@freetimes. com.au ●

NEW EMERGENCY OFFICIALLY OPENED Warwick Hospital's new emergency department was officially opened on Monday of this week by Darling Downs Health Board Chair Mike Horan AM. Minister for Health and Ambulance Services Steven Miles said the $3 million project had doubled the number of treatment bays from three to six beds. "The new department features a specialised paediatric treatment bay, four new short stay beds and three triage spaces," Mr Miles said. "The refurbishment has also increased privacy for patients and improved work flow for staff members." The minister praised staff for their hard work during the project. "Staff at Warwick Hospital work hard every day to ensure the very best patient care is delivered," he said. "And they worked equally as hard to deliver a new emergency department that suits their needs and the needs of their growing community. "This new department future-proofs the hospital for the growth expected across the Southern Downs in the coming years." Mike Horan said demand for health services across the region is increasing. "Each day the Warwick Hospital's emergency department sees, on average, 56 patients," he said. "In the last financial year, 20,466 people attended Warwick's ED seeking medical treatment for a range of complaints everything from wound management to life-saving treatment due to accidents. "Locally, there's been a steady increase in

more patients with serious life-threatening conditions presenting to the ED. "Despite these complex cases and to their credit, emergency department staff have worked hard to increase the number of patients treated, discharged or admitted to hospital within clinically recommended timeframes. "This new department will further support staff as they continue to provide excellent care to the people of the Southern Downs." ●

BIPARTISAN SUPPORT FOR EMU SWAMP DAM Members of the Stanthorpe and Granite Belt Chamber of Commerce participated in a successful 'Southern Downs Expo' at Parliament House in Brisbane last Tuesday night, 13 November. The Chamber in a media release said politicians from the ALP and LNP were keen to meet and discuss the Granite Belt and sample local produce. Amanda Harrold, Steve Tremellen, Stephen Tancred and Cr Vic Pennisi took the opportunity to present the facts about the potential dam at Emu Swamp, especially the significant economic benefits to the community and new employment that will be created. Host of the evening and Member for Southern Downs James Lister highlighted the project when introducing the many industry and tourism organisations that

were at the expo. "Mr Lister supports the project but also listed the milestones of support provided by both political parties in its development," the Chamber statement said. "Particularly the granting of 4500 ML of new water for the Border Rivers and the listing of the project as one of 'State Significance' under Premier Peter Beattie, the granting of environmental approvals under Campbell Newman, the support for the current detailed business case for the project and the extension of the environmental approvals under current Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk. James Lister said it was "very pleasing that this great project has enjoyed bipartisan support for 15 years and I look forward to seeing my colleagues from across the chamber continuing to support it". ●

NEWS SHOTS FIRED A dispute between two elderly men in the Stanthorpe area escalated quickly when one of the men allegedly produced a gun and fired shots. Police were called to a Springdale Road address at 9.34am last Tuesday 13 November in relation to a disturbance between a 73 year old and a 62 year old man. Stanthorpe Police allege that after a short verbal exchange the older man produced a firearm and fired a shot into the other man's vehicle. Police further allege the 62 year old male left in his vehicle and the 73 year old discharged another round in the direction of the vehicle and struck it. The 73 year old was arrested and charged with committing two acts intended to cause grievous bodily harm, carrying a loaded weapon in a public place, possession of unregistered firearms and failure to secure ammunition. He was refused bail and appeared

in Warwick Magistrates Court last Wednesday 14 November.

HIT BY CAR A GoFundMe campaign has been launched for a Stanthorpe woman who sustained serious injuries after being struck by a vehicle last Saturday night, 17 November. Amanda Favero (pictured) was struck from behind by what is believed to be a speeding car at the corner of Symes

and Folkestone Street while walking through town with a friend. The GoFundMe page states the young single mother of two sustained multiple broken bones, fractures and bruises, her sight has been affected and she has undergone an operation. It also states she will be unable to work for a lengthy period while recovering from her injuries. Amanda was flown by RACQ LifeFlight to Brisbane's Princess Alexandra Hospital in the early hours of last Sunday morning after initial treatment at Stanthorpe Hospital. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the Stanthorpe Police on 4681 6400 or Crime Stoppers anonymously on 1300 333 000.

INVEST RIGHT HERE The Southern Downs Regional Council says the region is set to benefit from growth and investment after launching the second phase of its 'Invest Southern Downs' campaign with a new

website and video. Launched at Parliament House in Brisbane last Tuesday, the new website 'investsoutherndowns.com.au' is the latest in Council's marketing toolkit for residential attraction and investment. "Council's new website is just one way we are working to market our wonderful region to new business and potential residents and investors," Mayor Tracy Dobie said. "Our region has so much to offer when it comes to liveability and economic opportunity and Council is continually working to encourage growth. "Now is the time for us to take every opportunity to ensure the Southern Downs reaches its potential." The new website spotlights local families and individuals who share their stories of relocating to the region and promote the best of living on the Southern Downs. Investsoutherdowns.com.au also showcases what the region has to offer across jobs, property, lifestyle and education. ●

Killarney Area Promotions Association (KAPA) members Lian Miller and Jenny Warren are behind the project, having formed a fundraising sub-committee to engage Brisbane-based artist James Ellis to create the artworks, which include kids playing marbles and horse-drawn transport from an earlier and simpler time. The pair hopes to commission more murals in public spaces around Killarney to brighten the town up for visitors and locals alike. To find out more about KAPA's activities and the Killarney region as a whole visit killarney.org.au ●

KMAC IS RIGHT ON TRACK WITH $10M BUILD CRACKING ON The $10 million 30-room expansion of Killarney Memorial Aged Care (KMAC) is travelling along at a cracking pace - and is on target for completion in July next year. Builder Paynters and project managers Kehoe Myers are powering ahead with the development which along with space for 33 aged care residents - several rooms will be shared - will also include new kitchen, laundry and staff facilities and extra car parking. Once complete current residents of the Leslie Place wing at KMAC will move into the new digs and it will then be Leslie Place's turn for a refurbishment. The KMAC board has also recently gained approval from the Southern Downs Regional Council for the development of a 14-unit independent living/retirement complex, with no firm timeframes in place as yet for commencement. It's the latest big news at KMAC, which has also undergone a significant management restructure in recent months. The facility welcomed a new chief executive office, Christine Scroop, back in August and she's responsible for all operations, strategy and financial performance, roles previously shared by the board and senior management. In her report to the KMAC AGM in October, board chairperson Lyndall McCormack stated that with the "size and complexity of the organisation, new skills have been sought and put in place".

Christine's appointment ushers in a new era of growth for communityowned KMAC and she says her role is as a "business manager", exploring future care opportunities both on-site and off, including home care solutions for Killarney and surrounds. "We're very fortunate at KMAC to have a GP clinic operating here three days a week, for example," Christine told the Free Times. "That's pretty rare in aged care. "I believe there is a lot of scope to expand on that in terms of allied health services here on-site and out in the local community. "The main priority right now is the expansion - we have the approval for the retirement units but we have a bit of work to do in terms of finding the right model and affordability. "There's no point building a really expensive facility if it's over-priced and people can't afford it. "So we're probably looking at a mixed rental and ownership model but that's a little way off yet." Christine said another key early focus for her tenure is increasing "automation" around record-keeping, which is a huge part of life working in aged care. "The aim is to go paper-less moving forward - we don't want people walking around carrying great stacks of papers and ticking boxes all the time," she said. She said funding was always the biggest challenge in aged care. "The aged care sector had federal funding

The new aged care accommodation is on track for completion mid-2019. frozen for two years - we're used to doing things leanly and constantly finding new ways to provide care," Christine said. "It's hard when the typical public hospital bed is allocated $1000 a day, while a bed in aged care gets $200."

ABOUT KMAC'S NEW CEO ... Christine Scroop has 20 years' experience in aged care senior management, having been formerly based in South Australia, and hearing about the Killarney opportunity through an aged care consultant she'd been working with this year.

She grew up on a cattle and grain property on South Australia's Yorke Peninsula and by her own admission she feels right at home in the country and enjoys "breathing the clean, fresh air" in Killarney. She also has family in Moree, Stanthorpe and on the Queensland coast. Husband Alan is still working in South Australia - he's a maintenance supervisor at an aged care facility - but plans to make the move in the near future, and the couple have an idea of eventually retiring in Queensland. Killarney is a change of pace, with Christine having previously run aged care services in Adelaide where many of the smaller aged care facilities have been taken over by larger providers. "What typically happens is that a nurse then becomes the administrator," she said. "I'm not a nurse, my skills are around business management." ●

Jenel Hunt from Stanthorpe will perform. The program includes the famous "Hallelujah Chorus" and "The Trumpet Shall Sound" with stunning trumpet accompaniment, among many other gems. The combined East Street Singers and Granite Belt Choir have around 60 singers. Handel's original choir had 32 singers - 16 men and 16 choirboys. On the day of the premiere, in order to fit as many as possible into the venue, men were asked not to wear their swords and women not to wear hoops under their dresses. Tickets must have been pre-sold, you can ask a man to take off his sword, but you could hardly ask a lady to remove her hoop! Ladies, you can wear whatever you like but gents, not a sword thanks! Tickets are at the door and include a delicious afternoon tea in the church hall. The cost is $15 for adults and $10 concession, children under 14 free. ●

The East Street Singers will combine with the Granite Belt Choir from Stanthorpe to sing excerpts from 'Messiah', the all-time favourite music of Handel from the 1700's at St Mark's Anglican Church in Warwick this Sunday 25 November from 2pm. This amazing music has enthralled people since it was first performed in Dublin 250 years ago. Handel wrote the whole oratorio in 24 days. It is hard to imagine how he could have achieved this, he must have been 'on a roll', there are stories of him having visions of heaven while composing. Accompanying will be a strings ensemble led by Warwick's Michael Spiller with players from the local area, including Michael Funder on trumpet. Soloists are tenor Ian Kammholtz and bass Robert Williams, both wonderful singers from Toowoomba, also local singing teacher and soprano Jill Hulme from Warwick and alto

THE SPIN

LOCAL CLUBS SHOW TRUE DEDICATION The landscape of some of our nationallyloved sports including cricket and NRL continues to lurch from laughable to disastrous. In the face of events on the national stage it is pleasing to hear some positive and good news from local sports. After a long period of economic uncertainty the Stanthorpe Golf Club is showing a return to the black thanks to the hard work and belief of the members who now number close to 150. The popular Stanthorpe Golf Club complex also includes bowling greens and croquet courts. President Stephen Kay admits it has been a long and sometimes difficult road to work the club out of the red. For the first time in around 30 years the club is now debt-free. The club has turned the corner and it comes on the back of some tough decisions and the support of the members. A somewhat controversial decision was made several years ago when the club was on its knees to subdivide a parcel of land on Amosfield Road. Those housing blocks have now been sold and homes are either completed or in the construction stage. In further good news the club recently received a $35,000 grant to purchase a new mower - a move sure to make life easier for those who care for the greens and fairways. Another group quietly kicking goals is the Stanthorpe Archery Club which last weekend hosted an event for 300 participants. The club has been buoyed by a growth in numbers and is now also in a solid financial position. Thanks to much fundraising and the assistance of some smaller grants the club is expecting to begin work on a clubhouse shortly. A big bouquet to both organisations. They are two groups who epitomise what can be achieved when members work to together with dedication commitment and sometimes think outside the square. - Casey PRETTY PINK The weather forecast for Stanthorpe last Saturday was not looking rosy but there were 50 local golfers keen to get the show on the road for the Pretty in Pink - Breast Cancer Research Day sponsored by the Heritage Bank and supported by the staff of the local branch. The annual event which is a player favourite was postponed earlier in the year due to wet weather so organisers and players were pleased when the forecast rain held off until well after play. While the golfers battled it out on the course in the Single Stableford competition the Heritage Bank girls were kept busy on BBQ duties, selling raffle tickets and distributing prizes. Overall more than $1000 was raised and will help support those in the local community affected by Breast Cancer. The Pink theme flowed throughout the day from dress to buggies specially dressed for the occasion and there were prizes for both. It was hard to miss Eric McClelland who was happy to forgo his much loved Manchester Blue for a flurry of pink and he was rewarded with the prize for the most "appropriately" dressed male only just edging out Bill "Pinky" Pyne. Lorraine Gurnett was "pretty on pink" and got the nod in the Ladies category. It was hard to miss the Fittock's mean

South's captain Ben Staley heads towards back-to-back centuries in last weekend's game against RSL. Pink Machine which won the prize for the best decorated buggy. The McLellan's wheels receiving honourable mention. There was golf played as well and there were some remarkable scores returned. Matt Burgess was in red hot form and the scorched the field with a score of 48 points in the men's event. Burgess finished the round six shots clear of Santo Cavallaro who claimed second spot after a count back relegated Ian Harvey to a place in the run downs. Marg Locke returned 42 points in the ladies competition finishing an amazing seven points ahead of the field. Kay Webb (36) collected the runner's up prize. Following the round there are quite a few players who are under the handicapper's scrutiny. The run down went to 40 points for the men and 34 for the ladies. The colour scheme this Saturday will possibly be a little more sedate but the competition will be equally as fierce when the field tees off in the Delaney Family Golf Day, a medley 4BBB Stableford. This event is a shot gun start commencing at 11.45 am with registration to be completed by 11.30 am. ZONE TWO GALLERY SHOOT All roads led to the Bosnjaks Road shooting range for the Zone Two Gallery Shoot last weekend hosted by the Inglewood Branch of the Sporting Shooters Association. It was a great weekend of fierce competition and the club Patron James Lister MP for Southern Downs dropped in to have a shot and joined members and visitors for a meal. Three competitions were shot, America, Imperial and T&P. Congratulation to local shooter Stephanie Dudgeon shot well in all three disciplines and finished the competition with the Best Overall score. Another club member Richard White was successful in the America with a win over Stephanie Dudgeon and Joanne Fenwick. Fenwick shot well in the Imperial with Stephanie Dudgeon again relegated to second place. Dudgeon however shone in the T & P taking the points with a win over Monika White with third placing going to Richard White. BUSTING THROUGH Rod (Buster) Pettiford scored a well over due win at Sporters last Sunday but alas Jim Mitchell was once again was forced to settle for the runner's up prize. After a hot round on Saturday in the All things Pink

Stableford Dave Burgess returned the best Gross score. George Merritt claimed the Pin Shot at the third and Keith Green picked up the Pro Pin while Mark Lynam and Dave McPaul featured in the run downs Nikki Waterworth and Paul Mills did not leave empty handed either, each won a meat tray Sporters will be ready to hit the greens for Sunday's tee off at the normal time of 7.30-8.00am. Remember visitors and new players are always welcome to join the fun. REDBACKS BACK WITH A WIN In Round five of the Condamine Cup Redbacks played Allora. Redbacks won the toss and asked the home side to the field choosing to bat first. Openers Daniel Bowles (20) and DavidPonting (17) got their team of to a good start. With A combination of big hitting and good partnerships Redbacks set their opposition a gettable total of 147. Redbacks innings in the field did not start well. Costello opened the bowling with a shocker - a 13 ball over included nine wides. From there could only improve. Allora opener Bruce Ole was dismissed for 12 as the bowlers began to hit their straps. Thunder and lightning rolled in with Allora at 5/117 before the game was declared a wash out handing Redbacks a return to t eh winners circle. In the reduced rain reduced game Redbacks won by 10 runs. Redbacks 147 (7/125 after 23overs) (Tyhe Clarkson 35, James Kurtz 22, Jamie Holmes 4-22, M. Higgins 2-18) Allora 5/117 after 23 overs before washout (Mitch McLennan 31, Sean Bryson 26, Tyhe Clarkson 2-32, Dave Drewery 1-19) MARYVALE BEAT RAIN AND OPPOSITION Maryvale Condamine scored a comprehensive win over Sovereign last weekend in the Warwick Cricket fixtures. In form batsman Tom Bourke scored his first century in the Warwick A Grade competition. He had previously scored two centuries while in the junior ranks and earlier this year while on the Wanderers tour scored an impressive ton in a game at Emerald. Bourke was unaware he had reached the milestone on Saturday. He was caught in the covers and it was only when he was leaving the field to the applause of his team mates that he realised he had been dismissed for a neat 100 runs. It was thought team mate Andrew Ryan

had also reached the 100 milestone but a check of the scored sheet revealed a 10 run discrepancy leaving him stranded not out on 95. He will have to wait for another opportunity to crack his ton. Rain threatened to deny Maryvale victory after they set Sovereign a target of 288. Maryvale captain Paul Bourke and Brother Kevin Bourke bowling off short runs spear headed the attack in attempt to beat the rain and their opponents. It was a ploy that worked well. Paul Bourke taking three wickets for 26 runs as Sovereign were dismissed for 161. Maryvale 5/288 (Tom Bourke 100, Andy Ryan 95no, Cahal Davis 3-42, Lucas Munro 1-25) Sovereign 161 (Luke Cullen 81, Lucas Munro 16, Paul Bourke 3-26, Matt O'Brien 2-26) SOUTH'S BUILD MOMENTUM South's continue build moment in the Stanthorpe Cricket competition after their slow start to the season. In Saturday's game they posted a big win over rivals RSL. In the game played on Sheehan Oval South's batted first and Ben Staley had a field day posting his second century in as many weeks. His 106 coming off just 115 deliveries and included nine boundaries and a couple of sixes. After Staley's opening partner Singh was returned to the clubhouse midway through the second over Mark Lanza came to the wicket. Lanza turned back the clock with a trademark Bluey Lanza innings of 81 not out. The pair put on a third wicket partnership of 162 before Staley was caught by Sam Dowie off the bowling of Anthony di Bella in the 36th over. Unfortunately the horse had bolted and at the end of the innings RSL were looking for at a target of 249. The RSL innings began slowly with the South's opening bowlers pinning the batsmen down early. The South's bowlers did a great job and the RSL innings failed to gain traction. Liam Lanza cut a swathe through the batsmen taking five wickets for 12 runs from five overs. His spell included one maiden. The normally solid RSL batting line up capitulated with no batsmen reaching 20. They were dismissed in just the 28th over for 97. GUTSY WIN Wanderers scored a gutsy 17 run win over Valleys on the CF White turf last Saturday and after six rounds of fixtures now sit at the head of the Stanthorpe leader board on 14 points It is a welcome change of fortunes after a couple of seasons in the doldrums where lack of players was a cause of concern. Those problems appear to be behind them this season and on Saturday scored a gutsy win over Valleys. After winning the toss Wanderers elected to bat on the CF White Turf. Openers Tim Harslett and Ky Rashleigh were dismissed cheaply and with the score at 3/38 the innings was looking a little shaky. However while first drop batsman Jamie Carnell remained at the crease, supporters were confident they could post a good score. Carnell set about building a good total scoring his second century in as many weeks. A good middle order partnership between Carnell and Brendan Drayton who scored a career best of 39 steadied the Wanderers ship as an alarming clutch of ducks had threatened to derail the innings.
