Narre Warren North MP Luke Donnellan has increased his hold in the seat. 188050
Big win for Labor The ALP’s Luke Donnellan has retained the seat of Narre Warren North as his party seized a resounding election victory on Saturday. Out of the 73.38 percent of votes counted, Mr Donnellan received 58.72 percent of votes. “I’m enormously proud to be given the opportunity to continue to deliver for this community,” Mr Donnellan said. “On Saturday people across Victoria rejected the fear and division offered by our opponents and voted for a positive, optimistic gov-

ernment that gets things done. “Whether it’s duplicating Narre Warren North Road, adding new lanes to the Monash, building a children’s ED at Casey Hospital or delivering free TAFE - we won’t waste a moment.” The ALP’s Gary Maas, who will replace outgoing Narre Warren South MP Judith Graley, said the results show that “voters in great numbers supported the work that has been done with roads, public transport, education, jobs and health”. Mr Maas received 57.19 percent of preferred
votes out of the 68.28 percent of the total votes counted to date. “The results also show that voters supported a positive plan - including securing our community - going forward, but I did not expect that they would support this plan in such big numbers,” he said. “It appears that we have won each booth on the primary votes alone.” Mr Maas said he is humbled by this result and is grateful to have been welcomed by the community. “It is a gift that has been bestowed to me

by the voters of Narre Warren South and I will work hard to improve our community under an Andrews Labor government,” Mr Maas said. “I want to thank the people of Narre Warren South for the confidence that they have shown in me. “Our community has voted for strong, stable and majority government. “I look forward to continuing to meeting and getting to know the members of the electorate over the course of the next four years and to deliver on the positive and progressive plans for a better Victoria.“

Cat rescuer's home plans gone astray By Brendan Rees A woman who takes in abandoned and stray cats is now in need of a home herself. Daniela Maslen had packed all her belongings into a semi-trailer, thinking the sale of her home in Hampton Park had gone through. "We already packed up everything and five minutes before the removalists left we got the phone call from our lawyer saying that settlement was not going to happen," she said. She says the current buyers were "in the process of getting a loan together" after "they have had four months and they didn't do anything." The founder of 2nd Chance Cat Rescue, who was ready to move into a property she bought in Cranbourne with her husband, is now at a bed and breakfast in Harkaway with their 15 cats - 12 of which have been rescued. "We are just waiting," Ms Maslen explained. "We haven't got anything in writing yet so we're still in limbo." Ms Maslen was running her not-for-profit organisation from Hampton Park home, but saw a better opportunity at the new property to provide more space for the cats. But now the cats are in cages in the back of the bed breakfast which Ms Maslen says is not ideal as "they can't really do much." "We have had everything stored away ... everything is in the van and in our car, and trailer." She said she had to buy more clothes because of all her belongings being in storage. "We don't have internet access where we are staying, so I can't even use that," Ms Maslen said, adding she needed to use a library to keep up with her emails. "To top it off my husband isn't working any more ... it makes it much, much harder. "He's actually having to take his super out to get a bridging loan ... that's not a good thing," she said.

Speaking to her lawyers, she says "they're hopeful" that settlement will be "all going through" which was originally set for 14 November.

Historic trees come down By Jessica Anstice Two historic oak trees in Berwick collapsed during the severe storm on Tuesday, 20 November. The trees stood tall in High Street, Berwick and were adored by the community. "The Berwick Business Group is shocked and devastated to hear that the trees fell this week in the storm," Berwick Business Group secretary Magda Dabaco said. "We had secured funding with the City of Casey to light up these beautiful trees at night in time for Christmas.
Two historic oak trees in Berwick collapsed during the severe storm on Tuesday.
"Unfortunately this will not proceed now, but the Berwick Business Group will endeavour to come to an appropriate alternative." Berwick resident Donna McKerchar said she is "devastated to see these trees down". "I think these trees brought the meaning of heritage of Berwick," she said. "They gave the welcome shade from the sun at many memorial ceremonies. "I've taught my children about the age of these trees and the beauty they brought to High Street whilst enjoying a chippy lunch under them. I believe many people would hold personal memories of these."
A motorbike rider was allegedly sighted travelling in excess of 140km/h in a 40km/h school zone along Princes Highway, Beaconsfield on 20 November. The $20,000 fund-raiser By Jessica Anstice Narre Warren South P-12 College VCAL students have raised an impressive $20,000 for various causes. With VCAL commencing in 2006 more than $100,000 has been raised by students - this year seeing $3000 going to a local family of a former student, $2000 to Breast Cancer Research and $15,000 going to Year 12 student Ace Bryans to assist with the purchase of a motorised wheelchair. Elsie Tafiti attended Narre Warren South P-12 VCAL from 2014 to 2016 where she was known for her quiet nature and bone dry sense of humour. She disliked numeracy and absolutely loved literacy - her talents driving her to write terrific poetry that showed enormous depth of understanding and empathy for others. Tragically she was lost in a car accident that left family and friends distraught. Money raised by this year's students and donated to her family will be used to erect a headstone in remembrance of her life. Ace Bryans has been a student at the college since Year 7 and students were particularly delighted in seeing one of their own benefit from their hard work. Ace suffers severe Dystonia-Neurological Movement Disorder and Neuromuscular Scoliosis as well as metabolic and gastrointestinal difficulties. Put simply - a perfect and brilliant mind but an incomplete and uncontrollable body. Ace thanked his classmates with a prepared speech delivered by a program that he relies

on to communicate and this touching and humorous moment brought tears to many eyes. Funds were raised by holding a benefit music concert, morning tea barbeques, trivia sessions, sports championships, the fourth annual 48 kilometre walk from P-12 to the city as well as the building and sale of a teardrop caravan by building and construction students. "It was another amazing effort by amazing students," VCAL teacher Sharon Phillips said. "We're looking forward to 2019."

Pool’s future promising Consultation between Casey Council, Doveton College and private investors is continuing to take place to identity partnership opportunities for Doveton Swimming Pool. "The pool is a very precious asset to the people of Doveton, but they don't always use it and that's a bit of a problem," Cr Wayne Smith said. "Doveton College are really keen to partner with council to reactivate that whole area, including the pool. "Doveton College would be the most community focused school in our city and possibly in the whole South-East." Doveton College is located next to the Doveton Swimming Pool.
Cr Smith said council is "not trying to get rid of having a pool there but it might take a different form". A report, called the Draft Casey Aquatic Facilities Strategy is currently being developed by Casey Council and is anticipated to be completed and presented in February next year. "We believe and hope that it (the strategy) will have lots of opportunities to revitalise the Doveton Pool," he said. "Hopefully that whole area will be good for everyone in the community and beyond but also the Doveton College community which is a very worthy partner." Extensive consultation has taken place with 1200 online surveys completed, internal and external workshops and various meetings held with key stakeholders.

Berwick Chase Primary School held its Colour Run for the second year, with 919 students participating and raising a total of $20,000 for the school. The schools Katie Atkin said the students' commitment to the Fun Run was second to none. "Our students are so excited about the money they've helped raise for school resources, and they thoroughly enjoyed participating alongside their peers as they cheered each other on," she said. "Our Colour Run course consisted of lots of different obstacles including a hay bale mountain, crawling under an army net, jumping over tyres, being targeted by water pistols and of course navigating the colour powder stations. "The schools fundraising group also supported the event by turning up with giant inflatable tunnels that the children ran under." School Fun Run program director Brendan Hopp said the organisation took great pride in helping schools improve student wellbeing and their learning environment. "School Fun Run has been supporting schools for more than 30 years," Mr Hopp said. "As one of the few school fundraisers in Australia that is purely health based, we love seeing the kids take part as they work on building active and healthy lifestyles." berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au

Sam a leading light By Brendan Rees When Cr Sam Aziz migrated to Australia from Egypt with his parents at the age of 10, he could not speak a word of English. Today, the Mayor Emeritus for the City of Casey has officially launched a book, detailing his personal life, career, and the remarkable opportunities Australia has provided him. The book titled 'He Leads,' also chronicles the lives of five leaders who share stories of success, celebration and hardship. "Putting your life on paper is a surreal experience," Cr Aziz said, who is also former director at Australian Customs and Border Protection. "It's an opportunity for reflection; it was a really great chance to put it all there."
The book aims for people to learn how to overcome challenges, communicate and lead. "I congratulate my fellow authors on their remarkable stories, and I thank my dear friend Samantha Jansen for offering me this rare opportunity," Cr Aziz said. Cr Aziz, who obtained a Master's Degree in Defence and International Relations at the Australian Defence Force Academy, reveals his perspective on leadership, vision and shaping the future in the book. "Some never before published life events have been revealed in this book," he explains. This includes a "very harrowing incident" when, at the age of 25, he was responsible for coordinating a national response following a
terrorist attack on Australia, while working for the Counter Terrorism Agency. "I am honoured to be one of six authors publishing my life story in this remarkable book." "I also spoke about Bunjil Place: Never in our wildest dreams did we ever imagine building the biggest precinct in local government in the history of Australia," he says. Cr Aziz also offers some words of encouragement to new Australian migrants: "If they apply their mind to things they can achieve some amazing things in our country. "The formula is very simple, you basically work hard, stay within the law and success will come your way, there's no doubt about it."
Cr Sam Aziz signs his new book, He Leads.
Local CFA volunteers share important message Casey CFA volunteers have produced a video that will help crews to better handle the stresses of coordinating major incidents. One of the volunteers behind the new video, Narre Warren North Fire Brigade member Linden Barry, said it shares an important message leading into what is predicted to be a busy summer. CFA volunteers from the Casey and Cardinia groups are filmed in various role play roles in the video which is designed to improve understanding of incident management for a rapidly escalating bushfire. Mr Barry, who recently received a CFA life membership and 35 year service medal, said the video was a great example of volunteers acting to improve safety and professionalism in fighting fires. "It's a classic example of volunteers getting together, seeing a problem and doing something about it," he said.
Narre Warren North CFA members feature in the video. "It's problem solving from the grass roots level." Mr Barry said the video would help all firefighters to run a major incident. "When it comes to incident management

you need to get organised quickly or you'll never have a good outcome," he said. "It's a simple video with familiar local faces playing roles on how to manage a bushfire from fire truck, a field command vehicle and then
on to a communications-enhanced field command vehicle or a field operations vehicle." The video highlights the importance of quickly getting strike team leaders, sector commanders and mentors to the brigade control point very early. The video emerged from discussions among volunteer members of the district 8 operations sub-committee. It is being distributed to brigades across the district as part of pre-summer briefings. Mr Barry admits to being tough when it comes to volunteer training and safety. "If you're going to put on yellows and get on a fire truck you need to know your game and take it seriously and that's what this is all about," Mr Barry said. Volunteer fire Brigades Victoria CEO Andrew Ford said this was an example of the strength of CFA volunteers in outer metro regions.

Berwick's Andrew Swift, the Alt Country/ Americana rising star has been given the nod from the country music industry for his album, Call Out For The Cavalry, picking up four 2019 Golden Guitar finalist nominations. Mr Swift has been nominated for Alt Country Album of the Year, New Talent of the Year, Male Artist of the Year and Vocal Collaboration of the Year for his latest single, Fire and Ice featuring multi-award-winning artist, Catherine Britt. At the beginning of the year, Mr Swift set himself a goal to work as hard as he could in hope that he might receive a Golden Guitar nomination. "Whether it happened or not, it was a great goal to get myself to stay driven with the release of my album," he said. "I had to wipe away a few little tears when my name was read out for the Male Artist of the Year category." Mr Swift said, "The thought of getting a nomination was great motivation for me to work as hard as I could this year. "To hear my name announced four times was incredible. "I'm absolutely stoked and I want to thank everyone for all their support." The talented artist was born in Berwick and has lived there for the last 15 years or so. He still performs in the area. "Not so much in Berwick as unfortunately there aren't any original live music venues, however I do perform at things like council run

That's where I launched my album earlier this year." Mr Swift said the Berwick community has "most definitely supported me over the years". "I cut my teeth on playing covers at the Berwick Pub or Central Hotel in Beaconsfield," he said. "I probably would never have gone to the Tamworth Country Music Festival if it wasn't for City of Casey Cr Wayne Smith and Bob Halsall who had a show on Casey Radio. "They encouraged me to showcase in Tamworth on behalf of the community and that was my first taste of Tamworth."

City of Casey councillors Rex Flannery,Sam Aziz, mayor Amanda Stapledon, Wayne Smith and Damien Rosario accepted gifts from members of Sikh Volunteers of Australia at the recent council meeting.
Sikh Volunteers recognised To share in the celebration of the Sikh religion founder's birthday, Guru Nanak, four members from the Sikh Volunteers of Australia attended the City of Casey council meeting on Tuesday, 20 November. "This is significant because the Sikh community are a wonderful group of people and are obviously a part of the Casey community," Cr Damien Rosario said. "Their spirit is very much about giving back to the community. It's actually one of their basic principles to earn an honest living, to meditate with God and to share among the poor and give to the less fortunate." At the meeting, the four Sikh volunteer representatives presented the councillors with some sweets. Mayor Amanda Stapledon said to the volunteers, "It's almost ironic that you are pre-

senting to us, when it is us that are so grateful to you for all of the great work that you do in our community. "They really are such a strong part of our community and volunteer on a regular basis and do so many wonderful things." The State Liberals have pledged to contribute $155,000 to a premier sporting and cultural event of the Australian Sikh community which Cranbourne will host in 2019. The funding package would enable the Sikh community in Victoria to hold the Games primarily at the multi-sport complex at Casey Fields in Cranbourne, close to where so many of the Indian community call home. It is expected that over 3000 athletes will participate in the games, in 14 different sports with 90,000 spectators cheering them on.

Local TAFE in awards The Hairdressing and Beauty Industry Association (HBIA) held its annual Student, Apprentice and Educator Awards on 19 November, where 21 Chisholm students were nominated for industry awards. A number of the successful students were from Chisholm's Berwick campus. Emma Long was the Diploma Beauty Therapy winner and Stephanie Freeman won the Diploma of Beauty Therapy Encouragement Award. Harley James was the Cert III Barbering (Apprenticeship) winner. Mr James works at Barber Town Men's Grooming in Endeavour Hills. Jarvis Harp-Wilks was the Cert III Barbering (Apprenticeship) stage two winner. Mr HarpWilks works at New York Barbers in Berwick. The HBIA annual awards are designed to
reward and celebrate students and educators who show a high level of skill and enthusiasm for the industry they are involved in. Doubling its haul of five awards in 2017, Chisholm students took home 10 awards across all categories of make-up, beauty, hairdressing and barbering. General Manager Services and Creative Industries Vicki Tuchtan said, "I am so proud of the work of our students, many who have had to overcome major challenges to undertake their studies. "To have their efforts recognised by their industry peers is pure joy, and a true testament to their passion and determination. "Our educators also need to be recognised for their commitment, professionalism and high calibre of training they deliver, inspiring their students to chase their calling."

Woodwork is child's play By Jessica Anstice The Berwick District Woodworkers Club's philosophy is to produce toys for disadvantaged children at Christmas time. This year the club produced in excess of 900 toys which were distributed to various charities throughout Casey and Pakenham. Casey Community Information and Support Services in Cranbourne and Narre Warren, Turning Point in Cranbourne, Southern Migrant Information and Support Services and Windemere charities received toys this year. These toys were made by the clubs 80 plus members throughout the year it takes the twelve months to make these toys. "We receive generous sponsorship from Beaconsfield Timber and Hardware, Paint-
wright Berwick, Hare and Forbes Machinery House, Pakenham Quilters and Patchworkers and the support from the City of Casey, The Old Cheese Factory staff and the Shire of Cardinia, and our local politicians," club president Len Preece said. "The club supports men and women who have finished their working careers who have a common interest in woodworking and we aim to give them something to do in their retirement and assist them in maintaining a healthy and meaningful life. "We welcome any person to join the club, they do not need to be experienced in woodwork most of our members have been in various careers during their working lives. It is also our way of supporting the local communities."

Let the recruitment experts help find the right staff
berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au
Innovative marketing solutions, such as video recruitment campaigns, are another GBS strength. Clients are interviewed about their business, what they do and the role they are looking to fill, which is collated into a marketing package. “GBS really is a one stop shop”, Mr Dawson said. “We support our clients in all their needs and work closely with them to find the best available staff.“ To help find the right person who will best fit a leadership role, GBS works with a service provider to undertake rigorous psychometric testing to evaluate the personality and character traits of an individual to help ensure the right fit for the right job, and the right match with the organisation's culture. “Psychometric testing touches on leadership style for example, how the person is likely to naturally lead if in a management role," Mr Dawson explained. Another useful tool is GBS Recruitment's 360 feedback whereby recruiters talk with a candidate’s peers, leaders and subordinates, particularly useful for senior management appointments. “At GBS we live by the ethos that successful placements start with focusing on the right match between the employer and the employee. We are heavily focused on building strong partnerships with our clients to build the best, long lasting outcomes. "We take the time to meet and understand your organisation's specific needs to ensure you're represented in high regard and the best
talent is appointed." GBS is a member of the Recruitment and Consulting Services Association, the peak body for hire, contracting and work force solutions sectors. "Expanding to Pakenham was a natural progression for us. We are still very much a
regional firm and clients appreciate that very close attention and personalised service, both during the recruitment process and long after the assignment," Mr Dawson said. "We think we are an excellent fit for this growing region and the South East urban fringe.” 12405404-HM49-18
GBS Recruitment is dedicated to helping businesses in the Private, Government and Not for Profit sectors find the right staff for the right job. “We are really focused on the needs of our clients, “said Sales and Strategy Director Michael Dawson. "By building strong partnerships together we build the best appointment outcomes." GBS recently opened an office in Pakenham to service the Casey Cardinia Region and the wider South East metropolitan area. GBS was founded 24 years ago in Warragul by Director Juli Halton and is currently led by General Manager and Director Rob Darby with offices in Warragul, Traralgon, Sale and now Pakenham. The firm’s senior consultants and managers have more than 100 years’ combined experience in the recruitment industry placing temporary, labour hire, permanent and executive staff. GBS Recruitment has four key areas of expertise - Industrial, Commercial, Educational and Executive recruitment services. The Industrial division provides temporary and permanent staff across diverse industries including manufacturing, engineering, warehousing, construction, agri-business, local government, health, energy, hospitality, financial services and aged care. The Commercial division supports government organisations and private corporations with staff appointments in finance and accounting, human resources, business support and administration, sales and marketing, information technology, event management, procurement and media and communications. The Education division supplies Casual Replacement Teachers to primary and secondary schools as well as child care workers and education support staff. “Our database of available teachers is growing and growing and we will be offering this service very soon from our Pakenham office”, Mr Dawson explained. The fourth division deals with executive appointments. The executive division focuses on CEO, senior executive, COO, CFO and executive general manager appointments. “We have achieved significant success to date, overseeing some very large CEO roles across Gippsland”, Mr Dawson said. Although proudly regional, Mr Dawson said GBS has interstate and international reach when it comes to senior appointments. GBS also offers payroll, out placement and redundancy services, skills testing and measurement, HR consultancy and psychometric assessments, and can also organise police and health checks.

HARCOURTS Warragul was recently recognised as the top performing agency within the Harcourts Victoria Group at its quarterly awards night in October. In fact it was a Regional Victoria double with Ballarat coming in at number 2 providing sound evidence to the current strength of the regional growth areas versus the decline in metropolitan markets. Evan Broadbent, Managing Director at Harcourts Warragul, was thrilled with the result. “I always believed we had the team, the marketplace, the Harcourts brand behind us, and the work ethics to get there if all of our stars aligned at the right time," Mr Broadbent said. "They did and I couldn’t be happier and more proud of the team than I am right now. It’s no coincidence that we also collected 15 other awards on the night including number one office for service to clients, number one individual agent for com.au
service to clients (Jason Lee), and number for contribution to the community. "These awards are more important to me than a number one office ranking, but ultimately they correlate each other. When you consider there are almost 100 other agencies in the group it’s a very pleasing result, and I would like to thank all of our clients for supporting us and utilising our services across both our sales and property management departments”. Marcus Williams, Harcourts Australia CEO said “Evan and the team from Harcourts Warragul are exemplary of how building a strong bond with the community leads to a successful business". "Not only do they donate to the Harcourts Foundation with each property they sell, but their extensive care for the local community has lead to the team being awarded the Harcourts Foundation Inspiration Award for the Quarter.” ● realestate.starcommunity.com.au

AWARDS BUILD UP FOR SJD HOMES OFFICER based builder, SJD Homes has won the title of Housing Industry Association Victorian Professional Medium Builder of the Year. Director Simon Dunstan accepted the award at a gala dinner held at Crown Towers earlier this month. The win comes just weeks after SJD Homes was named the Casey Cardinia Business of the Year. The firm also recently won a ProductReview.com.au award for Home Builders in Victoria. The Professional Builder category at the HIA CSR Housing Awards recognises business excellence including sound business and financial management practices, ethical conduct and high standards of customer service and satisfaction. The HIA judges congratulated SJD Homes for its professionalism and for carefully managing its growth. “The company ticks all the boxes for having good structure and thorough processes and programs in place,“ noted the judges. In October the Minister for Environment and Climate Change, Lily D’Ambrosio, announced SJD Homes as one of the three Victorian builders selected for Sustainability Victoria’s Zero Net Carbon Homes Pilot Program. The announcement was made at the launch of SJD Homes’ low carbon, energy efficient display home at Parklea’s Timbertop Estate in Officer. The home is the first of its kind and aims to drastically reduce energy bills and greenhouse gas emissions whilst still remaining affordable to new home buyers. Mr Dunstan said the company’s success was “all about people“.
Simon Dunstan outside the Z-Range display in Timbertop. “It’s not just us or our staff, it’s everyone – our clients, our trades, our suppliers and our community. By understanding this and treating everyone we deal with like this, they in turn do the same. “We all appreciate as humans we are not perfect, but we are all working towards the same common goal – not an ‘us against them’ mentality”. For more information on SJD Homes and its energy efficient display home, visit www.sjdhomes.com.au or visit the display home at Timbertop Estate in Officer. ●

Susan and John Hill have been the proud owners and operators of the Fountain Gate Bingo (FGB) Centre for the past 28 years. Venue manager James Rooney explained that Susan started bingo fundraising at Springvale City Soccer Club in 1982 to assist her son and all playing at the club. “Having the experience of conducting bingo, Susan and John found that Bingo sessions were a fantastic way of fundraising for their clubs as a social and entertaining night out,” James said. “On Saturday 15 December 1990 they started the FGB and have seen many changes in legislation, the operation of bingo and the introduction of Electronic Bingo, which has been a vital factor in keeping bingo in the forefront of modern gambling. “Susan and John are proud of what they have achieved at the FGB Centre, employing up to 30 of the most professional and competent staff in minor gaming (bingo) in the Melbourne metro area.” Fountain Gate Bingo is one of Victoria’s leading bingo centres offering over $125,000 in prize money every week. “For as little as $10 you can spend up to four hours and win as much as $10,000 in one game of bingo,” James said. By law, bingo in Victoria must be played on behalf of a sporting club or community organisation. Fountain Gate Bingo raises funds for 10 sporting clubs within the City of Casey

Paul Furlong with son Caleb (left) and employee Hughen. 183831 “I take kids of the streets and give them training and something to live for.” The aim of Revive the Kids is to teach orphaned or abandoned children as well as destitute families the skills they need to survive and to improve their communities. “It doesn’t help to just give out money like some other charities do, it just makes things worse by creating a greedy handout culture which is really sad,” he said. “Revive the Kids aims to change the culture and make people self-supportive.” To find out more about Revive the Kids, visit www.revivethekids.com.au

Paul Furlong and his family use the profits from their aquarium business to fund an extraordinary charity helping some of the poorest people in the world. Paul, his wife Julie and sons Caleb and Benjamin operate Lots of Fins Aquarium in Narre Warren. Profits help support the family's charity, Revive the Kids. Paul travels to the poorest countries around the world and rescues slave families, orphaned children and desolate villages from desperate situations. He started his charity work about six and a half years ago and since then has built 23 orphanages that help with kids’ training and education. He has also freed over 400 slaves and helped to re-home and educate about 250 orphans in countries such as Africa, Nepal, Pakistan, Burma, India, and the Philippines. Paul started Revive the Kids in a reaction to other charities that he saw as ineffective and bloated by administration and operational costs that stopped money from going where it was most needed. “If I see a desperate need, my heart just melts and I can’t leave without doing something,” he said. “I work with someone I trust and I set up a freehold for families of slaves, help in businesses, build orphanages or schools, I’ve had a few sewing centers and training centers.

FOCUS ON ... CHRISTMAS IN NARRE WARREN
Family affair Store of the year finalist Business acumen runs in the Fazil family. Zaman Fazil and his son Yaser have owned and managed Cozy Indoor Outdoor Furniture in Narre Warren for nine years. It’s a family business journey that Yaser says has been “epic“. “We love seeing happy customers who know they can come to our store and purchase furniture that will be stylish and comfortable as they entertain their friends and families,“ he said. “Customers keep referring us to their family and friends so this has been an epic journey.“ Cozy Furniture used to be The Outdoor Furniture Specialists. Zaman and Yaser have rebranded and expanded the store’s range now stocking both indoor and outdoor furniture as well as giftware and accessories. “We always have each other’s back and know each other’s strengths and weaknesses,“
said Yaser. “We encourage one another to push our limits.“ An accountant, Zaman has always been self-employed. “Not many shops have a large range of outdoor furniture and we believed we could bring value to customers as they can visit one shop and have a large range to choose from,“ Zaman explained. Yaser has a sales and marketing degree and worked for Coles and a high end rug business before joining his father in the furniture business. “At Cozy Furniture we pride ourselves on offering top quality products, exclusive designs and exeptional customer service as well as outstanding after sales service,“ said Yaser. "Along this journey we have seen so many trends and learnt how the furniture can portray someone’s personality.“
The team at Autobarn Narre Warren - Tom Bramich, Joshua Crombie, Chris Lamb, Stacey Walters, Gavin Sheedy, Olivia Mann, JD
Hegarty and Daniela Romano - were delighted to be finalists in the Autobarn Store of the Year Award.

Locals find an AFL home By Hayley Wildes and Nick Creely Two former Beaconsfield juniors had their AFL dreams realised in Friday’s Rookie Draft, with Jake Aarts joining Richmond and Tom Jok becoming an Essendon player. The former Eagles had their names read out, and will begin their AFL journeys after toiling away at state-league level for several years. Aarts, 24, a small forward who begin his footballing career at Holm Park before this year being listed at Eastern Football League powerhouse Noble Park, has been a constant presence in the front half for Richmond’s VFL program, and was taken by the AFL team on Friday with a view as being a ready-made player. In an interview with Star News back in August this year, Aarts spoke about what he brings to the table as a small forward “The way I play my footy, it’s not really changed since my junior days,” he said. “I love bringing energy and tackling, and you’ve got to defend as well, it’s not all offense, and being a small forward at Richmond, they need that in our team defence - it helps the midfield and backline with our forward pressure, so that’s what we work on.” Tom Jok, 21, also had his dream realised, and joined his boyhood club Essendon, with the Sudanese-born utility finally getting a chance after being overlooked in previous drafts. The former Dandenong Stingray, who was also a Beaconsfield junior, will add plenty of versatility to the Bombers’ list, with general manager of list and recruitment Adrian Dodoro telling the club’s website that Jok has all the right tools to make it at the highest level. “Tom has a huge motor and has been around for a couple of years. He played for Collingwood in the VFL and really impressed us with the way he developed,“ he said. “We think he’ll be able to give us some versatility. He’ll actually come to the club close to our best athlete. “He grew up barracking for Essendon and he’s hugely enthusiastic. We think we’ve got a reasonably good player.“ After claiming the 2018 TAC Cup premiership - the first in the club’s history - this year's Dandenong Stingrays also capped off a terrific season with six players finding AFL homes on
Beaconsfield boy Jake Aarts has joined Richmond after a solid four years at VFL level. Thursday and Friday. Sam Sturt was the biggest bolter of the entire draft and Stingrays forward was selected by the Fremantle Dockers with pick 17. Despite playing just six games at the end of the season for the Rays, Sturt’s ability to have an impact on the contest and smarts around goal was tantalising. As an extremely talented cricketer, Sturt only decided to focus on football late in the TAC Cup season and it’s fair to say it has paid dividends. The next Ray to be snapped up was versatile defender Will Hamill. Hamill was a standout for Dandenong in their premiership-winning season and his drive off halfback started many attacking forays forward. He was selected by the Adelaide Crows with pick 30 and heads there with plenty of promise.
His ability to run and carry and make the right decision with ball in hand should see him have an impact on the AFL in the years to come. Bailey Williams has long been seen as one of the premier big men in this draft class and he is headed to the reigning premiers; the West Coast Eagles. The Eagles snapped up Williams with pick 35 - which could prove to be a bargain due to Williams’ incredible agility and ability to take pack marks. Williams’ stock did fall slightly throughout the season, but there’s no doubting his upside. With the Rays going to all corners of the country, Zac Foot continued that trend when he was selected by the Sydney Swans with pick 51. Foot, who was a constant driving force for the Rays through the middle of the ground, heads to Sydney with the potential to a great
Picture: COURTESY OF CAMERON GRIMES late selection for the Swans. He can run all day and doesn’t mind doing the dirty work either. Toby Bedford was one of the biggest keys to Dandenong’s premiership run and he found a home at the Melbourne Demons after being selected with pick 75. As a member of Melbourne’s Next Generation Academy, Bedford was almost certain to find his way to the Demons as they could match any bid for him. One of the classiest small forwards in the TAC Cup competition, Bedford is relentless and loves to put pressure on, whilst also possessing plenty of skill. Lachie Young also found a home - heading to the Western Bulldogs after being selected with pick 6 in the rookie draft. Young impressed with his rebounding ability and run off half back.
White is moving forward with Buckley By Nick Creely
12400176-SN40-18
Buckley Ridges captain-coach David White harbours no regrets about his eight years as a first class cricketer. The 27-year-old South African compiled a fine career, made centuries both in his native country and abroad, and gave everything in his pursuit of making it at the very highest level. But, in February of this year, White hung up the whites after almost decade of toiling for Eastern Province/Warriors in the South African franchise system, in a decision he describes as a "transition" from the intense nature of life as a professional career into the life of business and studying. "For me personally, it (his career) was very up and down, there was a lot of frustrating times, and I look back at it grateful, but very bittersweet," he said. "There were times where I showed the ability to perform well at franchise level and showed I had the capability to potentially play international cricket, but I wasn't consistent enough.
"I sort of got to a point where I realised that I needed another career - I've got no regrets, I gave absolutely everything I had for a long period of time." White is now moving forward in the next phase of his life, focusing on his studies, all with the aim of entering the business world, and potentially travelling and living around the globe. "I graduated (from university) last year, and all of this year, I've done an honours degree, through correspondence with University of South Africa. I started the degree at the beginning of the year, and I've got three sit down exams in February, so I'm hoping to pass those and get that under the belt," he said. "My degree is in business, in strategic management - I met some good people in the UK, and we chatted about life after cricket, and there were a few guys that have done well business wise, and we spoke about that. "It looks like one of those could help me with an opportunity in J'oburg, so it looks like
that'll be my first move - I'll get into the corporate life, get into the suit, and finally work for a change. His latest journey is in Australia, with White coming to the country to play some club cricket for the first time, and it happens that Buckley Ridges - arguably the most powerful club in the Dandenong District Cricket Association - have signed him on as captain-coach as he focuses on his studies. "It's my second time here, but my first time playing an extended period of cricket - I did a tour in 2014 with South Africa A, and that was in Townsville for three to four weeks, but I haven't played club cricket here before," he said. "The guys (at Buckley Ridges) have been good to me so far, no complaints - the guys did well last year, and have continued that this year, it's a good cricket team, and obviously with the rules allowing certain points we've got a few overseas players that are really experienced. "When I was in the UK, at Ashtead in Surrey, we had quite a young side, and here, I'm
David White's latest cricketing journey brings him to south-east powerhouse Buckley Ridges. finding the average age is older and most of the guys know the game pretty well. And that definitely shows on the field. "It's not only the overseas guys, we've got a really good group of handy local cricketers, like DJ Watson, who has done the business in the DDCA for a really long time, and other players that are locals."

Panthers post huge total By Russell Bennett The opening round of the West Gippsland Cricket Association's Kookaburra Cup Twenty20 tournament has delivered some startling results, not none more so than Devon Meadows' staggering annihilation of Emerald at Glover Reserve on Tuesday night. The Panthers took the game right away from the understrength Bombers from the outset with marquee player Kaushalya Weeraratne (25) and Matt Hutchinson (28) opening up with a 54-run stand. Hutchinson swung and missed at the first four balls of the game, but the innings quickly accelerated, and when Kyle Salerno and Scott Clark got together for their third-wicket stand it went to another level entirely - setting up an incredible 5/266 from their 20 overs. Their 190 was the second biggest Twenty20 partnership in the club's history, and the Panthers' 266 could well be the new WGCA benchmark in the format. Salerno, the skipper for the clash, recorded his fourth half-century in a row across all formats with his 67 from just 33 balls, but this was Clark's show. The big man was simply unbelievable in reaching his century. His first 50 came off 33 balls, but he then reached his ton in just 51 bringing it up in style with a six on to the roof of the clubrooms. He would go on to finish on an unbeaten 112, including 10 fours and seven sixes. The bowling figures of the young Bombers' attack reflected the carnage - with Hunter Wardale and Bailey Tucker finishing with 1/43 and 2/43 respectively from their four overs apiece. Predictably, Emerald was never in the hunt in its reply - ultimately recording 6/99 from their 20 overs with Trent Rolfs (54 not out) leading the way with a gallant unbeaten halfcentury of his own.
Devon Meadows player-coach Scott Clark belted a blistering century at Glover Reserve in the opening round of the Kookaburra Cup. Picture: FACEBOOK/DEVON MEADOWS CC Elsewhere across the opening round, 39 not out from champion Merinda Park batsman Daniel McCalman steered the Cobras to victory with just three balls to spare at home against Catani. The Cats were rolled for just 84 in 18 overs to start the clash, and Merinda Park finished on 2/85 from 19.3 overs. Nar Nar Goon/Maryknoll, meanwhile, somehow snatched victory from the jaws of defeat against the Yabbies at Pakenham Upper. Batting first, the Marygoons were dismissed
for 96 early in the 19th over but their situation would have been far more dire if it wasn't for a vital 48 from the experienced Brad Senior (himself a former Pakenham Upper/Toomuc player) at the top of the order. Brian Kulasena was the pick of the home side's bowlers, snaring 3/6 from his four overs. The Yabbies lost the key wicket of Sahan Wijeratne at the start of their reply but seemed to recover through the middle order as a string of their batsmen got promising starts. But Sean Somers, Daniel Glen, and mar-
quee opening bowler Josh Dowling had other ideas as the Yabbies were astonishingly rolled for just 91 in 19 overs. Previously in the opening round of the competition, Kooweerup (9/156) - despite missing some of their own big names - still had too much quality for home side Clyde (134) to handle. Demons favourite son Chris Bright had a game to remember - top scoring with 44, before claiming a memorable 2/1 with the ball - including finishing the contest on a hat-trick.

By Nick Creely A brutal knock by former Premier Cricket and Victorian underage star Dale Tormey and an allround masterclass by skipper Luke Wells delivered Casey-South Melbourne its first victory of the Victorian Twenty20 Super Slam on Tuesday night against Monash Tigers at Casey Fields. The Swans (4/201 off 20 overs) gave the Tigers absolutely no chance after a blistering start by Tormey and Wells set up the electric victory. Surging out to 0/60 off the first six overs, Tormey launched a series of massive hits over the ropes, racing out to 40 off just 13 deliveries, in a stunning start and reminder of his fine talent. Just days before, Tormey struck a marathon 177 for Pakenham in the West Gippsland Cricket Association, and in his three innings now back in the Premier fold have delivered 104 runs at 34.7. The Lions star eventually fell for 76, a 36-ball knock that included seven sixes and four boundaries, combining for a stunning 129 run stand with Luke Wells, who also oozed class to compile a 43-ball 53, including three maximums. Adding insult to injury, talented pair Jordan Wyatt (36 off 21 balls) and Lachie Sperling (18 off 10 balls) provided some late fireworks to lift the total into the 200s, a hard ask for a visiting team to chase down. Nuwan Kulasekera (3/17) struck in the first over, removing the dangerous Adam Amin for a duck, and the former Sri Lankan international's class shone, snaring two further early wickets to snuff out any Tigers early surge. But, in-form wicketkeeper batsman Scott Edwards (33 off 23 balls) and Jackson Waters (48 off 21) began to find the boundaries, and give the Tigers enough hope heading into the second stage of the innings. Coming off a half-century earlier in the evening, Wells' (5/30) leggies proved gold, picking up the pair consecutively before rummaging his way through the lower order with brilliance, eventually helping his side roll the visitors for just 130. Wells has been working extremely hard on his spin, and adds an exciting dimension to the side. It follows Sunday's kick-off of the inaugural Victorian Twenty20 Super Slam, with CaseySouth Melbourne starting their campaign with two agonising losses.
The Swans took on the Prahran True Blues in their first game of the day, and just fell short despite playing some solid cricket in patches. The True Blues worked hard to combat the Swans, with Pranav Menon (29) launching a couple well over the ropes, but his run out, brought about by some clever work in the field by Lachie Sperling, saw them fall from 4/98 to 134 all out. The Swans' run chase started brightly, with the left handed Wells (21 off 13 balls) smacking four boundaries in a matter of balls to different parts of the ground, before his untimely departure followed by that of Jared Maxwell only two balls later saw the Swans fall to 2/26. Pakenham star Dale Tormey (23) - one of three marquee players for the Swans launched a cracking pull shot that landed on the hill in a great counter attacking display, but was undone by Shaun Miller (1/16) just as he looked to threaten, and similar to the True Blues, the Swans lost a clump of middle order wickets, and eventually got bowled out for 123 in 18 overs. Dandenong and the Swans then did battle for the final match of the day, and similar to the thrilling two- Despite Jordan Hammond (3/17) bowling with great energy and proving he belongs at the Premier level, the Panthers managed to claw their way to 6/127 at the end of the 20 overs, with Comrey Edgeworth's run-a-ball 16 helping them along the way after an early stumble. The Swans lost danger man Dale Tormey early, with off-spinner Suraj Randiv (2/22) forcing the star to chop on, and with Jared Maxwell (35) and Luke Wells (23) looking set, the Swans raced out to 1/48 and in a strong position. Randiv and fellow spinner Akshat Buch (2/16) brought the game back to life, forcing plenty of mistakes as they tightened the screws and cut off the boundaries. As he did in the opening match, Nuwan Kulasekera (24 off 19 balls) managed to reverse the tide and find some much needed momentum, and with just an over left, the Swans needed seven runs for victory. But a brilliant final over from emerging quick Jakeb Thomas (3/27) denied the Swans a victory, finishing on 7/124 after their 20 overs. The 1-2 Swans take on the Frankston Heat on 4 December at AH Butler Oval.

Four out of Another mixed day for Narre five ain’t bad The Cranbourne Bowls Club was all abuzz and in high spirits after recording some great wins in Round 7. Cranbourne become a genuine force in Division 2 with a win over Churchill/Waverley playing away, while three other Cranbourne sides recorded great wins. Meanwhile, playing at home, the Cranbourne Division 5 side had historians looking back at the club records with a massive 107shot victory over Mulgrave Country Club. Midweek Bowls had a bye last week and will resume again this week. After a setback last round, Cranbourne's Division 2 side was determined to get back in the finals chase by defeating Churchill/Waverley Golf. Not only did the side win but it picked up 16 valuable points with wins on three rinks, which made it mission accomplished for the day. The green was in perfect condition despite heavy rain during the week, with only the wind to contend with early in the game. But all players seemed to enjoy the excellent bowling surface. Skip Doug Boggie teamed well with his third, Ron 'Two dogs' Lyfield, and team mates Paul O'Day and Greg Jones to record an impressive 20-shot win, which was needed to enable Cranbourne to go on and win by 15 shots in total. Cranbourne 92 (16 points) defeated Churchill/Waverley Golf 77. Cranbourne's Division 3 side played at home and had a tough game against Burden Park but, with great awareness across the board, managed to get home by eight shots and pick up 16 valuable points.
The best rink again was skipped by Chris Griffiths and his team of Gerry Dudink, John Stanley and Vic Butera, who went on to win by seven shots - which was a great effort. Cranbourne 81 (16 points) defeated Burden Park 73. Playing at home was obviously an advantage for Cranbourne's Division 5 side, but to win by a massive 107 shots was extraordinary in anyone's expectation. Although every rink scored sizeable wins, the best rink was skipped by club life member Hans Worstelling and his crew of Peter De Lisle, David Wilson and Sandra Mueller who all bowled well with 34 shots up. Team mates all mentioned how well Sandra bowled, which gave skip Hans an armchair ride. Cranbourne 135 (18 points) defeated Mulgrave Country Club 28. Playing away at Monbulk was always going to be a challenge for the Division 7 side. A lighting-fast green and inclement weather up in the hills was not ideal conditions and unfortunately this played into the home town's advantage. Skip Harry Van Soest was up for the challenge and - with support from his team of Brian Hall, Olive Stanley and David Brown - won by two shots, which was a good effort. Cranbourne 64 (2 points) lost to Monbulk 88. Six-a-side skip Allen Skurrie and his team of Bob Pyne and Stan Williams had a great day, winning by 21 shots - which was enough for victory. Cranbourne 51 (12 points) defeated Mordialloc 32.
Saturday was another mixed day for Narre Warren's Pennant bowls teams. Division 3 and 4 both celebrated wins, while Division 5 and Division 7 both had losses. At Fountain Gate, Division 3 played Dandenong Club and had a good 25-shot win. Judy Naughton, Zade Bulmer, Erik Luyters and Wilma Stevenson led the way with a 2611 win, and they were aided by Joe Selfridge, Reg Young, Iain Stevenson and Rod Lane who won 28-17. Keith Mark, Colin Groom, Arthur Scheurer and Jim Millar held on to win 22-21, while John Wright, Tracey Storm, Peter Hayden and Zak Storm went down on the last end 1820. Narre Warren (1) 16-94 defeated Dandenong Club (1) 2-69. Division 4 was also at Fountain Gate against Cranbourne RSL. The win was set up with Arthur Fitt, Peter Castricum, Ralph Devonshire and Norm Hosmer winning 24-11, and Paul McNamara, Jim Kempf, Stan Robinson and John Zanon winning 21-11. Alan Mark, Peter Groom, Mark Groom and Carl Lapham won 16-13, while Wilma Haringsma, Wally Finlayson, David Wilkinson and Geoff Miller just went down, 16-18. Narre Warren (2) 16-77 defeated Cranbourne RSL (2) 2-53. Division 5 had a bad day at Dandenong Club, not winning a rink. The rink of Janice Moran, Joe McGuire, Sharon Bull and Brent Grigg was the best performed, losing 20-22; Stan Bulmer, Dermot McConville, Peter Lyons and Geoff Ampt went down 14-23; Les Clement, Rudi Pompe, Andy Tobler and Graham Dodd lost 15-31; and Jacqueline Moody, Sharane Lyons, Philip Howard and Craig Moore (11-31) also lost. Narre Warren (3) 0-60 lost to Dandenong Club (2) 18-107. Division 7 had a trip to the windy Carrum greens. Rudi Oost, Darren Moore, Derek Fenn and Laurie Baker had a good 28-12 win while Stan Birkett, Len O'Brien, Pauline Kempf and
Wayne Grimsey won 21-18. Dawn Baker, Diane Peterson, Glen Cadman and Graham Peterson went down 14-28, but Rose Rasmussen, Helen McCarthy, Leo McGeary and John Uren had a bad day losing 15-38. Narre Warren (4) 4-78 lost to Carrum (3) 14-96.
Erik Luyters was part of an impressive Division 3 win for Narre Warren.
