MORE TO LOVE The editor’s desk Last week I caught the train to Brisbane from Landsborough but on the return trip there was a storm brewing and anyone who commutes regularly would know our trains have a habit of shutting down during a decent storm. On a number of occasions in the past I've travelled back up the coast on alternative buses put on by Queensland Rail. Sometimes it added an extra five or six hours to the usual hour and a half trip. I was shocked, however, to hear a voice on the loudspeaker at Central Station the other day tell commuters it was up to them to have alternate plans in place if the trains were shut down. That doesn't build confidence in our public transport system, and what does it even mean? Should we have cars parked in town just in case? ● - Margaret Maccoll

WHAT WE'RE TALKING ABOUT

WAIT FOR NEW LIBRARY OVER BY MARGARET MACCOLL The much loved Noosaville Library reopened its doors on Monday after the completion of its $2.2 million refurbishment and residents dashed in eager to see the changes which begin as soon as visitors walk through the doors into the new Showcase section.Noosa Council's Libraries and Galleries manager Kerri Contini said the Showcase, which is styled like a book shop, contained items in high demand and librarians' choice books set out for visitors to browse. Kerri said the lessons had been learnt from the popular high-tech Makerspace section at Cooroy library and incorporated into Noosa's new Makerspace which contains items including virtual reality equipment, 3D printers and sewing machines. She said library staff had learnt a diversity of 3D printers were required to suit the amazing range of uses to meet community demands and sewing machines had proved incredibly popular. The process of taking out and returning books has been streamlined with the use of new radiofrequency ID making it a quick and simple process. The library will be officially reopened on Friday 30 November at 10am by Local Government Minister Stirling Hinchliffe and Noosa Mayor Tony Wellington and there will be a community celebration with entertainment and activities including a welcome to country by the Gubbi Gubbi Dance Troupe, songs from 15-year-old singing sensation Sari Abbott and tales from storyteller Gregg Dreise. ●

A Rural Enterprise Program being led by Country Noosa is creating a series of reports to aid business operators in future rural pursuits. Project manager Melanie Butcher said after community consultation nine concept papers had been developed to cover areas of holistic farming, permaculture, carbon farming, mixed farming, a local history of agriculture, pest and weed control, sustainable grazing, collaboration and networking and small crops farming. Country Noosa's Nina Saxton said each concept paper outlined the opportunities and challenges for the topics and included case studies. The papers are expected to be made available to the public next month. The program now seeks to gather community input to inform the final concept paper on the topic of ecotourism. A workshop will be held at Kin Kin School of Arts Hall on 3 December and anyone interested in ecotourism is encouraged to attend. The program is being conducted with partners from the University of the Sunshine Coast and Noosa and District Landcare, with funding from the Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation Big Ideas grants. Visit www.countrynoosa.com to register for the workshop. ●

HAVE A SAY ON CLIMATE CHANGE MEASURES Council is inviting residents and community groups to learn what sea level rise could mean for Noosa and have their say on potential responses Council might pursue. An interactive workshop on 4 December will outline the most at-risk locations, based on scientific data. "Importantly, we're looking to gauge the community's thoughts on all of the ways we might respond to each risk - whether it's rock-walls, dune restoration, beach replenishment or land-use regulations,"

Council's Climate Change Project coordinator Grant Hinner said. He said Council would use feedback collected at the workshop to prepare a shortlist of potential sea-level rise responses for Council to further investigate and cost. "The workshop is not just for those with a stake in areas we expect to be physically impacted by sea-level rise," he said."We need a broad mix of community members to attend, representing different interests. This will make for a robust and fully informed

discussion. The decisions we make in the short term can have significant impacts in the long term - on future Councils and the community." Council will hold the interactive workshop at 10am on 4 December at Council's Tewantin offices, 9 Pelican Street Tewantin. To register phone 5329 6500 or email grant.hinner@noosa.qld.gov.au. COVER STORY

GIVING BACK BY HOLLIE HARRIS

I

nspired by Prince Harry's recent heartfelt speech at Fraser Island's Central Station Rainforest, Drop Bear Adventures Tour Company owners, Hana and Mark sprung into action. "His speech resonated with me as I two have a longing to inspire and support more conservation work and only wish that we had the following that these guys do. Oh, the things we could achieve," says Hana. The dedicated duo began their tour business just 7 years ago and there is no doubt, they have been going from strength to strength. Taking out a Certificate of Excellence by Trip Advisor 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018, they are undoubtably keeping their customers happy, but this ecoloving duo are doing good things for our environment. For me, that's the real story. It's rare to find a business who genuinely demonstrate giving back to our precious environment and in so many ways and sharing how others are off-setting their footprint by giving back is about inspiring other businesses to do the same. This fun-loving couple spend much of their life on K-Gari (Fraser Island) revisiting the place where they first met, you could say. Making beds and cleaning rooms at the local Beachcamp, Hana says

"We are so proud!" says Hana of their big Beach Cleanup in October. the young couple fell into their cheeky banter straight away. Wild orange-haired Hana is best known these days as Mumma Bear - one half of the Drop Bear Adventures enterprise; where travellers get to experience the beauty and richness of one of Australia's most pristine locations. Thongs on his feet and an ice-cold rum in his hand, the other half, Popa Bear Mark is often heard on his didgeridoo. Both Hana and Mark are incredibly connected to K'Gari and have built their business based

on an infectious love for the island. "I have holidayed on the island since I was a little kid, my father worked in the logging industry and my grandfather started the 1st shop on the island, so I suppose I'm a 3rd generation islander," says Mark. "It feels more like home to me than anywhere else in the world, but the best bit is that it still makes me feel like a kid. So many wonderful memories and so many amazing adventures, I think it's fair to say that I am addicted," he says. Fraser Island is known for its beaches

and native dingos, but the heritage-listed site is also struggling with a waste problem and Hana and Mark pride themselves on continuously working towards their strong environmental focus. Many people think that tourism on the island and rubbish and waste go hand in hand. In fact, the Fraser Island Defenders organisation have claimed that the impact of tourism is the amount of litter and waste management problems created. However, this May, almost six tonnes of rubbish was collected by hundreds of volunteers during the annual 4x4 QLD Fraser Island Clean Up where organisers believe half of the rubbish had been washed ashore, with some of the waste from foreign countries. Examining the rubbish showed much of it coming down on the outside of the Great Barrier Reef, from Papua New Guinea and the Philippines. It is estimated about 80 per cent of the rubbish collected was plastic. One can't help but wonder why we blame the visitors when we should be making the companies making these products accountable. Hana and Mark organised their own volunteer clean up program to help keep their treasured island clean. Last month, with a small team of just 39 volunteers they collected 408kg of rubbish in just 4 hours.

This included 2480 plastic bags, 10,000 micro plastics (smaller than a 50c piece), 754 plastic bottle lids and 2122 hard plastic pieces (large than a 50c). Volunteers were shocked by the amount of plastic waste they collected but for Hana and Mark, this was no surprise. "Fraser Island's 75 mile beach is continuously littered with rubbish, some of this is from lazy visitors but sadly a lot more of it is just washing up on our shores, especially around big tides," Hana says. After such a successful weekend, Hana and Mark and their team of eco-warriors are already on to planning their next Beach Clean-Up event, for October 2019. Being 'eco' is a bit of a marketing ploy for many businesses, but these guys really stand by their word. In a bid to inspire others to follow practices that are healthy for our planet, Hana and Mark are committed to being green in all areas of their business. Every aspect of their tours is designed to provide guests with an incredible adventure, but also to be as environmentally sustainable as possible. "By no means are we saying that our gas guzzling 4WD business is environmentally friendly, we're not complete idiots, but what we are saying is that we take our Corporate Social Responsibility very seriously and we are always striving to better our business procedures to lower the impact that our adventure company has on the environment," Hana says. Everything they buy; from the food they eat, the water they drink, the fashion they wear, the transport used and the luxury

items they choose all has a huge potential impact on the world we live in. So, they research where their food comes from here in Queensland and how to strike an effective balance in their business between morals and budget, so they shop local. On the island, they make sure that their cleaning products don't contain the harsh chemicals that can affect the precious water system, using only eco-friendly products which won't affect the drinking water in years to come. They are mindful of food waste and rubbish, planning each trip properly to avoid contributing to the island's issues. "We don't use things like single use plates, cups, cutlery and we have completely banned plastic straws forever. We use re-usable items wherever possible and wash up plate after plate with love for K'gari in our hearts," she says. They reuse items such as cans and jam jars for containers or crafts, and compost cardboard or use to start the campfire and they use large plastic bottles to make ice. Mark is also extremely handy and resourceful having grown up on the island and in the bush, which reduces their waste dramatically. "We are always surprised at how he manages to fix things that seemed beyond repair even to some 'professionals'. This has a huge impact on the camp equipment and hostel as these takes a huge amount of upkeep as a result of being so exposed to the elements." Sadly, neither Queensland Parks and Wildlife or Fraser Coast Council offer any recycling facilities for the waste generated by the half a million people that visit the

island each year. "We have always done our bit when it comes to recycling but when we found this out, we took it upon ourselves to do even more! We are now the only company that recycles 100 percent of all the recyclable waste we produce - even the soft plastics. This takes an extraordinary amount of effort from the entire team and comes at a great cost." "We would love to see K'gari's future littered with conservation projects and to be home to a state-of-the-art information, education and a cultural centre. "As for Drop Bear, we just want to keep on doing our best to provide a great customer experience whilst striving to be an ethical, sustainable and carbon neutral business. We know that running 4WD up the beach isn't the best thing for the environment but believe that the educational tours that we provide are exactly what this planet needs." These two really do love their work. Each visitor has the unique experience of exploring the world's largest sand island, while making some unforgettable memories down under and this has earned them the number 1 spot on Trip Advisor. The visitors get an authentic Aussie experience, complete with Drop Bears! "Luckily for us we are DROP BEAR AWARE and always carry plenty of vegemite on tour with us. We have had a few close encounters but armed with the right knowledge we've been able to avoid any attacks." I can't help but wonder how tourists can still believe in the drop bear. I've been hearing that one for around thirty years

and am surprised word hasn't gotten out yet - until I hear Mark's the expert at telling a yarn. "He is so convincing and with a scar on his shoulder from a sports injury he really makes it believable. I on the other hand have a terrible poker face!" Hana says. It's all in the spirit of falling head over heels in love with the island. The more people experience the magic of K'gari, the more warriors it will have to step up in their everyday lives to protect her. "This is the essence of what we try to create on our tours; we talk about the fragility of the eco system and how venerable it is to human impact and our ever-changing climate. "Our Beach Clean Up all came about from numerous chats with Surfrider and Ocean Crusaders. "Through sponsoring these events over the last few years and volunteering with them I naturally wanted to bring this movement to K'gari. "We hosted everyone at our Beachcamp Retreat, blocked out tours so that we had plenty of cars to bring our awesome crew of volunteers up, asked a good friend to provide some live music and did a big shop to make sure that everyone was fed well over the three days. "Our Beach Clean Ups are just one initiative that we are working on, we have also started #FraserDingoWatch to help raise awareness of our precious Dingo species and are working closely with council to ensure that recycling is brought back to K'gari. "We can't wait to make next years Beach Clean Up even bigger!" â—?

FROM GARDENS, GOOD THINGS Primary school students are learning more about their food and nature from the ground up through the creation of a bush tucker garden and outdoor classroom. A combination of the work of a team of teachers, students, the Noosa Men's Shed and funding from a $2,500 grant from the Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation was realised at Sunshine Beach State School last week with the completion of the garden. The prep students planted 100 edible Noosa natives sourced from Noosa and District Landcare Native Nursery and ePlants to establish the bush tucker garden which will become an outdoor classroom where students will be taught about their edible and beneficial qualities. An additional 200 native flora will be added to the remnant bushland inside the school boundary to enhance the biodiversity of the area. Among the plants highlighted for the students were the Richmond Birdwing Butterfly Vine and the Black Sheoak which will provide food sources for the butterfly and Glossy Black Cockatoo. Di Seels said the new space would ignite the children's leaning. "It's setting new standards in outside education," she said."In no shape or form would this project have been achievable without the NBRF grant. From our $2,500, a bush tucker garden was

MONUMENT TO REMEMBER Fifty-two pairs of shoes lined up along the Noosa riverbank set up by the Zonta Club of Noosa will stand as a monument to women who have been killed in Australia in the past year in domestic violence incidents as part of an international campaign. Inspired by the "Shoes on the Danube", a monument in Budapest to those killed by the fascists in WWII, the 52 pairs of shoes will be lined up at Quota Park, Gympie Terrace (opposite Thomas Corner Restaurant) on Sunday 2 December as part of Zonta International's 16 Days of Activism, held from 25 November to 10 December during which clubs focus on prevention, protection and prosecution.

The action will also be in keeping with the 2018 Zonta Says NO to Violence Against Women campaign which this year highlighted efforts to end child marriage. Zonta Club of Noosa president Jan Comins said for more than 25 years the club had been working to raise awareness of women's rights, raising more than $550,000 for local projects. ●

FESTIVAL FUNDS SHARED established, and the remnant National Park segment was restored, cradling the newly constructed outside classrooms. "Altogether, including the existing permaculture garden, this has created an amazing, unique, outside learning education hub." NBRF chair Dick Barnes said the revitalised outdoor learning area and educational gardens had the capacity to have a transformative impact on the children engaged in the program and impart a deeper connection to our biosphere reserve. ●

The Rotary Club of Cooroy has tallied up the results from the Cooroy Mountain Spring Festival held in August and hailed it a success. Club president Warren O'Neill said they were delighted with the numbers of people attending and the money raised. More than 2,000 people climbed the mountain and proceeds have been delivered to Sunshine Butterflies disability support group ($15,000), Cooroy SES ($1000) and Cooroy Memorial Hall and Black Mountain Rural Fire brigade both received $500. In addition Noosa District High School Rotary Interact Club received $500 for their assistance with the car parking and allocated the funds to the Tewantin tennis club for new lights and to the Noosa Touch Club Association for new sporting gear.

Warren O'Neill, Leanne Walsh of Sunshine Butterflies and Rotarian Carol Johnston. The Rotary Club of Cooroy also contributed $11,675.20 to the Rotary Drought Assistance raised from the festival's Helicopter Ball Drop, sausage sizzles outside the IGA, donations of more than $1,000 from Palm Lake Resort residents and almost $2,500 raised at the Pomona Pub. ●

EXPERIENCE THE BEST TEACHER BY MARGARET MACCOLL

Seven years ago five successful business owners met at Peregian Springs Golf Club to establish a business mentoring group based on a hugely successful mentoring scheme in New Zealand. Business Mentoring Noosa was born and last week the service which now includes 22 mentors celebrated its anniversary and the 350 businesses they have mentored over that time. Coordinator Julien Cahn and founding members Mark Waite and Peter Chenoweth said what set the group apart was the way mentors met fortnightly to review their mentees' situations and offer additional insight. "That frequent meeting of mentors

Mark Waite, Julien Cahn and Peter Chenoweth. can bring 22 heads to the issues at hand," Peter said. "We're constantly checking in and making sure we're adhering to our principles." Mentor Trevor Payne said the mentors

could act as a sounding board for business operators. "Some people have no one to talk to," he said. Trevor said through raising points to progress the business the mentors assisted their progression. We'll ask, what's your biggest problem, how are you going to solve that, when are you going to start, he said. "We don't tell them what to do," he said. Mark said mentoring gave them an opportunity to give back and boost the local economy by supporting its businesses. Julien said the mentors gave of their time and expertise freely to benefit the business community of Noosa Shire and help create employment. For more information visit www.bnm. org.au or phone 5406 1291. The cost is $200 for a year of mentoring. ●

KAKE IS BRINGING THE GROUPS TOGETHER Noosa Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCIQ) incoming president Janet Kake aims to unite business associations across the Noosa Shire and bring in a strategic plan to support businesses and encourage local employment for school leavers. The seventh generation Noosa resident said she had a good grasp of issues affecting both the beach dwellers and hinterland residents through her own life experiences and extended family connections which include cousin Noel Playford. Janet said it was important for Noosa's

various business groups to unite as one voice to advocate for the sector. She said she was interested in introducing education and training workshops to help businesses stay afloat and to have Noosa-specific courses and traineeships for school students in partnership with local businesses. Janet said Noosa CCIQ was growing in popularity with new members coming on weekly and monthly breakfast meetings and sunset drinks events had been introduced to further encourage networking. ●

SUCCESS FOR OCEAN VIEW BY MARGARET MACCOLL

Photographer Justin Bruhn of Pure Underwater Imaging attributes much of his success to the people who have helped him along the way including his Noosa business mentors John Wood and Trevor Payne who he regards as his creative and logistics support team. "I've been very lucky I've had a lot of people make a difference" said Justin whose business last week won the category of Creative Industries at the Sunshine Coast Business Awards. Justin dives the world's oceans to capture images underwater which he reproduces on wall prints in galleries and on gift items. His all Australian made products are sold in 200 wholesalers across the world and he donates a portion of profits to the Australian Marine Conservation Society. "Through my work as a photographer I hope to inspire people through conscious thought," he said. ●

THE BOLTON REPORT

SANDY BOLTON, NOOSA MP

THE CONVERSATIONS WE NEED

Suggested improvements included a greater range of methods of teaching to accommodate learning styles, with a desire to participate in open discussions

to accumulate contextual knowledge and develop their own opinions. All students agreed that their teachers were wonderful, however education was too focused around

results, with a lack of developing the tools needed to manage their learning, wellbeing, and critical thought for decision making. Parents did not escape the mix, with teenagers wanting to be challenged in their opinions by involving them more in discussions, to break the "taboo" stigma surrounding sensitive topics. Bring back the dinner table debate? Examples of systems that deliver improved academic and social results, greater personal self-esteem and responsibility for mental and physical health were offered as options by both retired and active teachers. Their simple message? "We must get back to what is best for our children, not what is best for NAPLAN'" From our graduates was one last message "Education needs to accommodate the workers and decision makers of the future, not the factory workers of the 1800s for which the system was developed." I must admit, I had never thought of this. In the world of decision-makers; statistics, reports, reviews and recommendations from stakeholders and experts are placed before us. However ultimately, it is those who are impacted by our decisions that should be listened to, as a 'trigger' to the open discussions that need to be held but that we may be fearful of having? I look forward to your thoughts. â—? Until next time, Sandy

With the excitement of graduations still in the air, and end of year approaching, it is an opportune time to give voice to our emerging adults. A survey initiated by one of our graduates with 70 of her fellow school leavers revealed that only 23% felt ready for the responsibility of voting. Equal rights, organ donation, economic inflation, terrorism, artificial intelligence, abortion, voluntary euthanasia, climate change, and the refugee crisis were topics they would have liked to learn more about prior to leaving school. We must ask ourselves: are our young adults being adequately prepared to make informed decisions surrounding matters that impact their lives? Media saturation is often blamed for the plethora of youngsters feeling overwhelmed with information from contradicting sources, however it may be that conversations regarding common societal issues that could be all that is needed to ready the next generation to help shape the future. Of concern, 96% of the group admitted they felt "pitted against each other" in the rigorous and competitive Overall Position (OP) system. They identified core skills such as communication, creativity, and critical thinking as not being efficiently harboured and relationships between students are becomingly increasingly strained along with higher levels of anxiety and the use of antidepressants as a result of these pressures.

SOCIAL SCENE

SAY NO TO DOMESTIC VIOLENCE Noosa White Ribbon committee spokesman Bob Birkhead teamed up with United Synergies, Zonta Club of Noosa, Free to Shine charity and Noosa Council to organise Noosa's first official White Ribbon campaign and was overwhelmed when about 300 people came to march, talk and back the event last Friday. "Domestic violence is not concentrated in specific socio-economic groups. It is spread across the whole community - even here in Noosa," Noosa Mayor Tony Wellington said to the crowd. "Around a third of all policing time is taken up with domestic violence issues and that includes here in Noosa. That's a shocking reminder that no community is immune from this problem." "So what can we do? Well raising awareness through actions like today's walk is one important approach. "But we need also to encourage victims to understand that they have support.

"A Vulnerable Persons Unit has been established on the Sunshine Coast to assist domestic violence victims "But the real message here is that victims of domestic violence need to know they are not the problem. They need to trust the various support services available to them. And that is an easy thing for me, standing here, to say, but it is often a very difficult mindset for victims to embrace - particularly if they are afraid of repercussions. "Our message today to victims of domestic violence is "don't be afraid to stand up and speak out". "Not only do victims need to talk about it, but so do we all. By making it part of the national conversation, we send a strong message about what is acceptable and unacceptable behaviour in our society. Domestic violence is never acceptable." For help with domestic violence issues call 1800 RESPECT. ●

grew from there." Dale said Jack and Jill, for example, came out two years after King Louis and Mary Antoinette were beheaded in 1793. "A lot of these nursery rhymes are a documentation of history, it's verbal history," she said. "All my work has stories attached, that element isn't new to this show. Even my landscapes are stories ... The difference is these are other people's stories I'm painting, and I'm twisting them." Twisted Tales opens from 6-8pm on Friday 30 November 30. Free entry. HAS IT COME TO THIS?

WORK FOR A LIVING Good on you, Bob Jarvis, for pointing out some facts about Manus Island refugees. Here is an employer asking for paid workers from the camp and none were willing to get their hands dirty, they’d rather sit back and collect government handouts and complain about their lot. Well let me enlighten you on refugees of yesteryear. When we came here as refugees 65 years ago from Europe we were indentured to the government for two years, so my father as well as my future father-in-law were sent out to work where needed while our mothers and us teenagers were kept in camps were you had no choice of what food was provided at the cost to our fathers plus rent for accommodation, which was basic at best.

LENSCAPE

Our spectacular open spaces; Melissa Bartimote snapped "the rolling hills of Cootharaba to Mt Cooroora Pomona" for Lenscape this week. Please send us your landscape, lifestyle or wildlife pictures to newsdesk@noosatoday.com.au No handouts no free medicals, as you had to join either HCF or MBF, the only providers at the time, and we only saw our fathers on weekends after they travelled half a day to get to the camps. After nine months in the camps we moved to Sydney, where a job was provided for me and my brother, no free rides there, everything we have we worked hard for. So stop crying about the poor refugees sitting back and crying gimme gimme, and let them show some initiative to work for what they get as of now they show no willingness to contribute to their welfare. A grateful old refugee. F. Venturini, Noosa

SUPERMARKET NEEDED Looking at the masterplan for the residential aged care proposed by Blue Care at Sunrise Beach if and when built. I have to admit that when the council-owned shopping centre was first built my belief was that one day Woolworths would sometime in the future become residents of a supermarket there. That idea is based on the fact that Woolworths do not have any representation directly on the eastern seaboard from Peregian to Gympie. They have three in the Noosaville, Tewantin area and all three appear to be well worth their investment.

As a grandfather living at Peregian Springs I bought a seven-seat SUV so I could take my visiting family on outings. There is no free bus to Noosa so it will cost approximately $60 in bus fares for four adults and two children - there’s a walk to the bus-stop, wait on a busy road, transfer to another bus at Noosa, not to mention the time and hassle of baggage. Like most people, we need more carparks close to the beach. World’s best practice reinforces this basic principle. John Lobb, Peregian Springs

GAGA OVER KOALAS The recent acquisition of the Yurol/Ringtail forest by the Noosa Council has really got me wondering who’s in charge of this council and secondly when will this sheer nonsense will stop.

The Noosa Council, despite their claims, is really struggling financially. Hinterland roads, bridges, river erosion and town infrastructure are in desperate need of attention and have been neglected due to lack of funds. Instead this council decided that the acquisition of the old pine forest at the cost of $3.5M to be shared equally between State, NC, and NPA ($1.2M each) was a much better option. On top of that the Noosa Council ‘has lent’ the NPA $600k to help them pay for their part of the deal. BTW that amount is twice the amount of money that has been allocated for road repair and maintenance in the hinterland ($300K reduced from $360k). We all love koalas, but come on ... it will take 10 years to replant and regenerate a suitable environment in that forest and probably another 10 years before you spot your first koala. This council has gone completely gaga over koalas and lost their priorities ... Dom Massoni, Verrierdale

When there are no koalas left in the Noosa Shire any more, it is reassuring to know that we can always go to Wiltshire to see these five. An article in British newspapers last month indicates that the Brits are helping us save the species. Let’s hope that Longleat Safari Park also has a large aviary so we can go and see some glossy black cockatoos when we have finished destroying their habitat. Let the backpackers come in. How much do we need the backpackers? The young ones and the not so young ones. Let them all come in. Let them shake up that retirement village. Let them bring in some fun not alone dollars. Noosa is declared as a adventure destination! Give them adventure, risk taking, breath tasking fairy pool, Glasshouse Mountains abseiling, BMX cross country riding, hair-raising adventures, give them Coolum Mountain and Mount Tinbeerwah, horse riding, sailing, the list goes on and give them good accommodation! Good accommodation is not just a bed in a “backpacker hostel“. Good accommodation is a room in an affordable well presented house close to all amenities, friendly stuff, a bar, restaurant, public transport and all the rest of it. Now, we have lost the very breautiful and well respected Willliams Street Backpackers and the great restaurant “Global Village“ to developers, which was loved and respected by so many tourists, especially sole female travellers who felt safe there ... it is gone now. Wee need more places like that and please welcome the new proposal in Mary Street for a new Backpackers Heaven. (Pssst: we all have been backpackers once. ) Heidi Schum, Noosa

MAKEPEACE LIVES UP TO ITS NAME BY MARGARET MACCOLL Makepeace Island may be as posh as it gets in Noosa and that's a big call. Owned by business magnate Richard Branson and with a list of celebrity guests to its credit the heart-shaped island in the middle of the Noosa River provides privacy and exclusivity beyond anything else in the region. Last week media were invited to the island to enjoy their food and view the renovated resort. The decor was Bali-inspired luxury, the food was fabulous and the staff could not have been more friendly. Designer June Robinson Scott chatted about vision of creating a relaxed retreat with an easy flow for guests across the resort with improved views to the river. June has also designed Richard Branson's luxury Necker Island resort in the Caribbean and knows a thing or two about securing bespoke items from across the globe. Happy with the result she said the

revamp had created a retreat that was "what it was meant to be". The resort prides itself on connecting with the community and for chef Lisa Mahar sourcing local, fresh produce was paramount. Island guests may be hit with a price tag of $10,000 to $24,000 a night but there aren't many opportunities to hire an entire island so close to a paradise like Noosa and with a helipad to make your entrance.

This year participants will decorate their floats in the theme of 'Past, Present and Future'. There are sure to be some fabulous costumes, some splendid decorations and lots of giveaways. A new addition this year is the Bentley's Great Santa Stroll which will see Santasuit clad strollers join the Bendigo Bank Street Parade to raise funds for the Leukaemia Foundation. The J is hosting a very special performance you will want to take the whole family along to enjoy this Saturday 1 December. The story follows a young girl who stumbles across a magical world where she discovers that all the characters she has read about and watched in movies are in fact real. With the help of her new friends, she must help defeat the evil witch who threatens to destroy their magical realm. It promises to be a showstopping extravaganza filled with many classic tunes where students transport you to the make believe world with their wonderful singing, acting and dancing. Performances are on at 11am and 6pm and run for around 3 hours including intermission. Tickets are available at www.thej.com.au.

Put Saturday 1 December in your calendar - Christmas in Cooroy is nearly here! Chips Santa Sack Races and every child gets a prize. Enjoy entertainment from Pineapple Crush and Smokin Mirrors and in the evening the Cooroy RSL Fireworks display will light up the sky, giving a truly magical display. The only thing you pay for is if you want

to buy something from a food or market stall, partake in a Christmas tipple at the bar sponsored by Cooroy Hotel, or buy a ticket in the fundraising raffle sponsored by Mower & ATV Solutions where you could win a $5000 Toro mower! There is something for everyone at Christmas in Cooroy plus it has a fantastic community vibe and the whole town comes out to celebrate the start of the festive season so make sure you don't miss out! Choose your seafood wisely this Christmas and always.

SUSTAINABLE SEAFOOD BY HOLLIE HARRIS The national peak-body representing the Australian seafood industry, Seafood Industry Australia (SIA), has released their 2018 Consumer Insights Report results from the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC). It seems the majority of Aussies want to buy sustainable seafood and as we head into one of our busiest seafood seasons for consumers, we should all be supporting our local fishers. SIA CEO Jane Lovell says this is a great result for Australia's commercial fishing industry which is one of the most

sustainable in the world. "Our Commonwealth-managed wildcaught fisheries were given a tick of sustainability at the of September, with no fisheries subject to over-fishing for the fifth consecutive year," Ms Lovell says. "While a new report has shown the footprint of Australia's trawlers to be one of the smallest in the world. Coupled with our aquaculture sector - who provide fresh, high-quality seafood, year-round - Australian seafood is one of the most sustainable protein sources in the world. "We all know Aussies love to eat Aussie seafood, and they can be confident their Aussie seafood is exceptionally managed," she says. The MSC survey revealed three-quarters of Australians believe they should buy sustainable seafood, only one in ten do so as often as they can, which is consistent with Australia's consumption rate of imported seafood, which is currently at 70 per cent of all seafood eaten in Australia. Imported seafood can come from sustainable sources too, however, the chain of province is more difficult to track. "So, if you want to be certain you're eating sustainable, healthy, world-class seafood that's good for you and good for the planet, ask for Aussie seafood. "As an industry, we call on Australians to support their Aussies fishers and ask for Aussie seafood whether it's at their fishmonger, fish and chip shop, or the local Thai restaurant," Ms Lovell says. â—?

SPORT TODAY TEN WINS FOR TNT

U15S LEAD THE WAY ON PITCH It was once again left to the U15's to fly the flag of victory for Cooroy-Eumundi Cricket. Unbeaten this season, they resumed their 2 day clash against Nambour after already claiming first inning's honours on day 1. Chasing the outright win, play resumed at 0-162, and it wasn't until they reached 207 runs that the first wicket fell. Jack Ritchie (24) and Riley Hobbs (29) continued the good work, concluding the innings at 6-276. With two hours to bowl at Nambour, and a 205 run lead, spirits were high from Cooroy, and the boys dismissed all Nambour batsmen within the required time,

RANDALL WOODLEY After an exciting day of cricket last Saturday, the four Tewantin-Noosa Thunder senior teams won every match they contested. Veterans of the club believe this is the first weekend clean-sweep for at least a decade. The Firsts won convincingly against Maroochydore, the Seconds also won, missing an outright win against Coolum by one wicket. At Dale Officer Oval the Thirds took the points against Landsborough and the Fourths came from nowhere to score

U15s unbeaten. givinig them the full 10 points. A stand-out performance from all of the boys and they should be proud of their position at the top of the Division ladder. ●

LIFE OF BRINE

PHIL JARRATT

NOOSA TAKES ON THE WORLD IN TAIWAN The WSL World Longboard Championships are underway this week at Junzun Harbour in Taiwan, with Noosa well represented in the persons of the veteran 2006 world longboard champion Josh Constable, and rising star Emily Lethbridge. With a run of fun beachies on the morning high tide at Noosa West last week, both champs were much in evidence in the lineup - Josh scraping the airfare together with a few extra coaching classes, and Emily limbering up for both schoolies on the Goldie and the world titles. Both of them are going to have to work hard for a win, but I have to say that when I've shared a wave on the points with him of late, Josh has looked as fit and as in-form as I've seen him in a long time. Pushing 40, the evergreen grom is moving seamlessly from classic arches through long sections to vicious hacks on the shorey, just the kind of longboarding they like to see at the WSL. Unfortunately Josh will be pitted against fellow Sunnie Coaster Nic Jones in round one, meaning one of them will be taking the slow road forward through round two. But if he continues to progress, the 2006 champ will encounter two of the world's most fired-up longboarders in defending champion Taylor Jensen, and the man he only just beat for the title in a surf-off in Taiwan last year, European champion Edouard Delpero. I watched from the shoulder as Edouard shredded a few set waves on his longboard on a chunky day at his home break of Bidart, France, a couple of months ago, then paddled in for an equipment change and did the same thing on a fish. He's the man to watch. Meanwhile, in the surf at Access 11 a week or so ago, Emily was relaxed about her final exam later in the day, amped about schoolies, and totally styling on every ankle-snapper she caught. Although her moves still have the trademark power she's displayed from a very young age, she seems to have slowed them down into a stylish, elegant progression. Beautiful to watch, hard to beat. Look out Honolua, our Em's coming at you! Let's not forget the other Aussies competing in Taiwan this week. Go Kath Hughes, Harley Ingleby and Jack Entwhistle! And speaking of the World Surf League, stay tuned for some news very soon on a new-look world longboard tour for 2019, with Noosa kicking it off. CONFESSIONS OF A CRICKET TRAGIC Although I wisely pulled the pin on social

Cool, calm and collected Josh Constable, 2006 world champ, not to mention Noosa World Surfing Reserve ambassador. Photo: NFOS cricket in my late 40s, before too many shin splints and pulled muscles, not to mention first ball ducks, wides and double-bounce dribblers, I have remained an armchair cricket tragic, watching obscure and meaningless matches on the edges of deserts on cable TV at odd hours of the night, and hardly missing a ball bowled in the profoundly silly Big Bash. So sad is this addiction that on a trip to Sri Lanka a couple of years ago, my wife and I were two of about eight people who sat and watched in stifling heat Sri Lanka A play West Indies A in Colombo. We went for the cricket (yawn) and for the passion of the spectators, which was personified by one bloke who periodically beat upon a drum to keep himself awake. I have to admit that as a result it's been a while since I've made it to the Gabba to see a game live, but the season-opening T20 between the always-exciting Indians and the much-to-prove Aussies got me out of my armchair and into the car, a gaggle of grandies - one of whom seems to be adept at swinging the willow - in the back seat. We knew it was going to be good when we were the only non-Indian folk at the

turnstiles, and up in the grandstands the drummers, the clappers and the chanters were wall to wall and hard at it already. Who knew there were so many Indians in Brisvegas? Of course they'd all come to see the great god Virat Kohli, and his every appearance at the dugout or at the coin toss was greeted by a cacophony of delight. Even when he failed with the bat, the Kohli army was delighted, it being enough to just bathe in his presence under the towers of light and intermittent rain. It was a great game and went down to the last over, but even as they lost, the Indian 90 percent were winners, laughing, shouting, having the time of their lives. Only when it appeared that wicketkeeper Carey had appealed for a stumping without the ball in his hands did they groan their disapproval, a stark reminder that the sandpaper of Cape Town is not yet a distant memory. On the way home, number one grandson asked, "How come they were happy when they lost, Poppy?" Good question, one that we cricket lovers of Australia need to give some thought to. ●

I love this Fenna De King close-up of Emily Lethbridge’s elegant cross-step.

Middle back row winner Ella Connolly with finalists for the Noosa Gift.

BIG DAY OUT FOR THE NOOSA GIFT BY RON LANE For Noosa's Little Athletics it was the perfect day to celebrate their hosting of the 9th Annual Noosa Gift an event which sees track and field contestants come from all over the east coast of Australia. At the Girraween Sports Complex it was a bright sunny day with little wind a good solid track; and as usual a well-run program of events. Events got under way at 2pm.and with a good crowd of sponsors, parents and supporters another successful Gift was under way. With all this it was Noosa at its best. As with previous years the officials dressed in their traditional floral shirts worked well and kept the program on time. Most important of all the well placed cameras which covered the finish line ensured that there would be no controversy regarding results. Amongst the many highlights was the

inclusion of a new event the Junior Boys/ Girls Invertation One Mile Race. Under the sponsorship of The Athletes Foot this event was a success with fourteen runners nominating. The final result for this historic occasion saw Alex Davis of Ipswich win in a time of 4min 41 in second place Valentino Serra Noosa in 4min 44 and third Hudson Jessep also of Noosa 4min 46. The fact that organisers were prepared to add a new more challenging event to the program speaks well of their attitude to change and the future. One of the major finals of the carnival was the Ladies Invitation 110 mt sprint sponsored by ACCOM NOOSA. This was won by Carla Bull with Hilal Durmaz second and Kirra Csurhes third. Apart from her track and field success Carla, who also competes as a member of the Alexandra Headlands Surf Life Saving Club beach event team has won medals at the National Titles.

This 16 yr. old, year 11 student who trains under the watchful eye of former Noosa Gift winner and now Alex. Surf club beach coach, Vincent Jason, is definitely one to watch. The final of the Mens 300 mt Gallop sponsored by Murray Surveyors, saw Andrew Imlah first, Jonte Connolly second and Jahal Adamovskis-Kraus third: the 70mt Pacific Motor Group Dash Final was won by Hilal Durmaz, second was Pat McCarthy and third Aaron Danman. The major event of the carnival was the Noosa Gift 110mt Final ($6,000 purse) proudly sponsored by the Noosa Heads Surf Life Saving Supporters Club. This group (usually referred to as the Surf Club) has been the major sponsor for this event for several years. "This is in keeping with our club policy of supporting the community," said board Chairman Ian Young OAM. "And with so many young people being

HOOK, LINE & SINKER

involved in the sport we are only too happy to do so."In the lead up to the final, runners contested seven heats then on to four semifinals which saw the first two place getters go through to the final. With the handicappers maintaining a high standard a tight finish was again assured. For 2018 the Noosa Gift was won by Ella Connolly in a time of 11.6 with Max Mason second and Leo Drake third. This rounded off a great year for in July Ella represented Australia at the World Youth Championships in Finland and running in the u/20s 400 mt she finished fourth in the final. Also as a member of the Australian 4x400mt relay team they finished second. "I am really stoked," she said. "I didn't expect to win because I am normally a 400 runner, so this is great; and please say thank you to the sponsors. It's a great day and a great event."For this young lady the world is at her feet. â—?

JACK MANGROVE

ANGLERS HEADING OFFSHORE THIS WEEK BY JACK MANGROVE The Noosa River has had a bit of a flush out with recent rains and larger tides. This in turn has brought some extra food down the river and provided some cover for fish as the water dirties slightly. Mangrove jacks are on the move with some quality fish taken around structures along the sound and the upper reaches of the river. Suspensions are perfect as they will spend more time in the strike zone. Up towards the river mouth the bigger morning tide has seen some great captures with trevally, bream, tailor and smaller jew having all been taken. Fishing soft plastics with a variety of retrieves has seen some nice captures. Metal slug on a long cast and retrieved at speed have excited the tailor and the trevally. First Woods Bays, and the current line have also been popular spots with jacks also taken at night noosatoday.com.au

on live baits. The sand banks around the river mouth is where the good numbers of flathead have been caught. They have also been responding well to soft plastics and fresh baits like mullet and live herring. Whiting numbers are also increasing and there are some solid fish amongst them.. Live worm and yabbies are still the prime baits. Up river; both ski runs have been producing great sized trevally along with larger female flathead and some nice jew. Crab numbers in the river have been good with some good sized bucks in the pots. With strong offshore wind conditions last weekend offshore anglers headed out but had to stay fairly close in. Local reef like Jew Shoal and Hall's Reef saw some nice snapper being caught during the early hours of the morning and later afternoon. Earlier last week conditions were a little better allowing larger boats to do the run

out to Barwon Banks and Double Island with quality snapper, cobia, pearl perch, jew and red emperor all boated. On Sunshine Reef bait fished hard to the reef tempted some nice coral trout. The mackerel are also starting to turn up with reports of spotted and school mackerel from most of the reef. Mack tuna schools have also been feeding on the large bait schools along the coast at the moment. On the beaches live worms, and pipis have been responsible for the capture of some quality bream, whiting and dart. There are some good gutters along the Noosa North Shore after the recent swells and large tailor have also been prowling those same gutters at night. Pilchards or mullet strip baits have been working well. So on behalf of Jack Mangrove, best of luck on your fishing adventures! â—?
